- 1:12Speaker 1: massive The show today is killer, because it really is.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Because later on the show, Jason Sobel and Paula Duca
- 1:19Speaker 1: come on together and in addition to generally ripping me.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Although Sobel wasn't listening, to that part, Um Sobel tells
- 1:26Speaker 1: a great story about when Phil Mickelson took him for
- 1:28Speaker 1: some money at a party uh uh five years ago
- 1:32Speaker 1: this weekend, um at the Wells Fargo tournament that opens
- 1:36Speaker 1: on Thursday that Jason Sobel is covering for Action Network.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That story is on Action network dot com. Leaduca posted
- 1:42Speaker 1: a story yesterday on Action network dot com about the
- 1:45Speaker 1: time he was in the Marlin's dugout when he found
- 1:48Speaker 1: out he won eighty thousand dollars on Jockomo in the
- 1:51Speaker 1: Kentucky Derby and like all the stuff that was happening
- 1:54Speaker 1: around him when it was going on. Plus he breaks
- 1:57Speaker 1: down the derby. Honest to god, you have to listen
- 1:59Speaker 1: to these stories. They are hilariously funny um and like
- 2:03Speaker 1: so full of color and flavor about what life is
- 2:06Speaker 1: like literally inside a dugout or at a tournament in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the off hours that you never get to see. Uh.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Download the podcast from the iTunes page. From iTunes the
- 2:16Speaker 1: buffet page, unsubscribe, resubscribe, rate the podcast, review the podcast.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Put your questions on the page. We will review those,
- 2:25Speaker 1: bring them out of the podcast. That is where we're
- 2:27Speaker 1: doing our interaction with their fans, right now, um, because
- 2:30Speaker 1: that's how you get higher rated in iTunes. I mean
- 2:33Speaker 1: that's what it's all about, right, So, unsubscribed, resubscribe, go rate,
- 2:37Speaker 1: go review, putting your questions do it all. Later on
- 2:40Speaker 1: La Duca and so will both tell great gambling stories
- 2:43Speaker 1: about the Kentucky Derby and Phil Michelson hilariously funny for
- 2:47Speaker 1: stuff we got Scooch in New York. Yeah, I am
- 2:50Speaker 1: so glad you're here. This is such a great surprise.
- 2:54Speaker 1: We got a lot to talk about. Like we can
- 2:56Speaker 1: talk about the fact well number one, we can talk
- 2:58Speaker 1: about your New York and um, which you're not allowed
- 3:02Speaker 1: to talk about, so I'm not even gonna press you
- 3:04Speaker 1: on it. Can I say how you got here? Yeah? Sure,
- 3:07Speaker 1: tell us how you got here? Like tell us tell
- 3:09Speaker 1: us your travel accommodations on the way out of here. Okay,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Well we had, you know, the private car that takes
- 3:15Speaker 1: us to the hangar and the uh, well, explain to
- 3:17Speaker 1: people like who you were coming with, and like if
- 3:20Speaker 1: you're allowed to say that, and then like I don't
- 3:23Speaker 1: people don't know that you were taking a private car
- 3:25Speaker 1: to a hangar to get on something, so like you
- 3:27Speaker 1: gotta set that up. Well, we had a we had
- 3:29Speaker 1: a business trip here in New York and some other
- 3:31Speaker 1: some other regions. Just kind of routine stuff. And uh,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm traveling with some of the senior executives with with Boyd.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So um, you know, we have a we have a
- 3:40Speaker 1: private hangar Boyd does at the near McCarron Airport in
- 3:44Speaker 1: Las Vegas. So we got the car early in the
- 3:47Speaker 1: morning on Monday to go to the hangar. And the
- 3:51Speaker 1: hangar itself is pretty nice. So you know, you hang
- 3:53Speaker 1: out there and you I love I don't know, you've
- 3:56Speaker 1: probably traveled on a private many many times. I love
- 4:00Speaker 1: how you know you get there about fifteen minutes before
- 4:03Speaker 1: you take off. That's the best. So you know, you
- 4:05Speaker 1: you just take your stuff on the plane. You're like okay,
- 4:08Speaker 1: as soon as you're ready to sit, it's wheels up
- 4:10Speaker 1: and you're ready to be ready to go. So um,
- 4:13Speaker 1: it was. It was a nice jet. You know if
- 4:16Speaker 1: a Falcon two thousands, is it like buttery leather seats? Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 1: And like what is the food like? So, so the
- 4:24Speaker 1: the food is kind of you know, we have our
- 4:26Speaker 1: chefs at the UH at the Orleans. They prepare special
- 4:29Speaker 1: meals and faco exactly why I didn't have the battered flacco.
- 4:34Speaker 1: There was you know, some steak and lobster there, but
- 4:36Speaker 1: I didn't have that. I was trying to I was
- 4:38Speaker 1: trying to go a little healthy and like I have
- 4:40Speaker 1: fruit and then basically you know, a turkey rap, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 1: with avocado. I was going, I was going, are you
- 4:45Speaker 1: kidding me? Like going here in the hangar and like
- 4:47Speaker 1: they're making steak and lobster, and that's when you decide
- 4:50Speaker 1: that I'm gonna go with the fruit cup and maybe
- 4:52Speaker 1: a you know, some deli turkey. You know, I like
- 4:55Speaker 1: to travel light and know I'll indulge once I'm in
- 4:58Speaker 1: the city and just little bit more. You know, you
- 5:01Speaker 1: don't know if there might be a bumpy flight. You
- 5:03Speaker 1: have no idea your your belly is a little sensitive.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It can get you know that. That's the one thing
- 5:08Speaker 1: about you know, the smaller planes, I mean the only
- 5:11Speaker 1: seats eight people on the on the jets. So you
- 5:15Speaker 1: guys don't know this, But right now I'm contending to
- 5:18Speaker 1: play a violin for Scooch because it's so sad that
- 5:22Speaker 1: his belly can get sensitive on a bumpy flight from
- 5:25Speaker 1: Las Vegas to New York. When he's flying on a
- 5:27Speaker 1: falcon too. I mean, you go over the Rockies, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: it gets and it gets a little rocky over the Rockies,
- 5:32Speaker 1: so you know you gotta gotta make sure you're not
- 5:36Speaker 1: eat too much. Yeah, but once you get up to
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know, about forty feet, it's just like clear sale.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So that was that was nice. Of course I got in.
- 5:47Speaker 1: We got in and it was raining, so you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm not used to not used to that. Well, normally
- 5:51Speaker 1: you live in a bubble of Italian villas and private
- 5:54Speaker 1: jets and private cars, so the rain doesn't even touch you.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So we had the car. We actually uh flew into
- 6:03Speaker 1: one of the airports and Jersey, Yeah, that's where they
- 6:07Speaker 1: do all the private stuff. And then took the car
- 6:10Speaker 1: into the city and uh, like I said, point, I
- 6:14Speaker 1: traveled like this. You know, he's wearing like a nice shirt,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, nothing heavy, And it was like forty
- 6:21Speaker 1: nine degrees and windy and rainy. As soon as I
- 6:23Speaker 1: got out of the just hit me like right, welcome
- 6:26Speaker 1: to the East Coast. Yeah, not today today is nice
- 6:29Speaker 1: beautiful like they degrees outside, hey speaking beautiful. Last night
- 6:34Speaker 1: the Calves came back and they beat their Raptors in overtime.
- 6:38Speaker 1: They were like three horrible bad beats in baseball. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: don't know if you saw that or not. Like there
- 6:44Speaker 1: was an under five in the Nationals game, where like
- 6:48Speaker 1: the total in the first five innings was under five
- 6:51Speaker 1: and it was to nothing in the bottom of the
- 6:53Speaker 1: fifth and I think there were two outs. There was
- 6:56Speaker 1: like an air a walk to the picture, and then
- 6:58Speaker 1: Bryce Harper came up and m like a three month
- 7:00Speaker 1: homer and so that went over. Um, you keep like,
- 7:04Speaker 1: when you're on the road, are you keeping track of
- 7:07Speaker 1: bad beats? Like that? Is it here? About that? Well?
- 7:09Speaker 1: What I'm doing, especially if I'm with the senior executives,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and you know, I have to just keep abreast. It's
- 7:13Speaker 1: like who we need and how big the decisions are. Uh,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you know, we're in and out of meetings a lot,
- 7:18Speaker 1: so it's real difficult. I couldn't watch the games. Were
- 7:20Speaker 1: actually in some meetings last night as well, but uh,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I was trying to keep as best as I could
- 7:26Speaker 1: tabs on the game, watching the scores, uh, reading about it.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But you know, when you're on the road like this
- 7:31Speaker 1: is difficult to to watch the games like I do
- 7:34Speaker 1: at home and actually keep track of the in progress
- 7:37Speaker 1: bedding lines and the halftime lines as as normally as
- 7:40Speaker 1: as I would normally. But we didn't have a good
- 7:43Speaker 1: day yesterday, and I can I can tell you that.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But we actually needed the calves because we had a
- 7:48Speaker 1: lot more tickets on on Toronto. We had a lot
- 7:50Speaker 1: more bets on Toronto. I mean, that's typical. We always
- 7:53Speaker 1: need an underdog, but when you get to this stage
- 7:55Speaker 1: in the in the playoffs, it it's not as lopsided
- 7:58Speaker 1: as it is and some of the earlier ounds, so um,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know. And then in baseball we need all the
- 8:03Speaker 1: big underdogs almost every day, so uh, and a lot
- 8:07Speaker 1: of unders. There are so many games right now that
- 8:10Speaker 1: are happening, like over the next twenty four hours that
- 8:12Speaker 1: I have questions about so and they all feel like
- 8:15Speaker 1: they are bookmakers trying to take advantage of the public. So,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know, the Duke and I were talking earlier this morning,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and the DUCA is on later in the show, as
- 8:25Speaker 1: I've said. And by the way, if you followed Action
- 8:28Speaker 1: Network HQ on Twitter or you went to Action Network
- 8:30Speaker 1: dot com Scooch, you would be able to keep track
- 8:32Speaker 1: of everything that's happening because we were all over like
- 8:36Speaker 1: all the bad beats, and they come back by the
- 8:38Speaker 1: by the calves and all that kind of stuff, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: they come back by the Pelicans late in the game
- 8:42Speaker 1: to cover. We were on top of that. So if
- 8:43Speaker 1: you ever need to know what's going on, you can
- 8:47Speaker 1: go to Action Network. Um So, like this is way
- 8:51Speaker 1: literally inside Baseball Dallas. Kiko is plus one or two
- 8:54Speaker 1: against Louis Severino, who's minus one twelve. The Yankees are
- 8:58Speaker 1: visiting the Astros. I look at that, and I say,
- 9:02Speaker 1: the bookmakers are begging the public to take the Yankees
- 9:07Speaker 1: because they believe the right side is the Astros. And
- 9:10Speaker 1: so tell me you're thinking, like on a line of
- 9:12Speaker 1: that sort of nuanced what is your strategy there? Well,
- 9:18Speaker 1: the betting public is actually shifted in those type of games.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You know, typically we need the underdogs in any game
- 9:23Speaker 1: where there's a favorite with a high profile favorite like
- 9:26Speaker 1: the Yankees and and and the Astros when they're playing
- 9:29Speaker 1: each other. The public seems to always find a little
- 9:32Speaker 1: bit more value in the underdog when they have two
- 9:35Speaker 1: good teams playing each other. And we've seen it in
- 9:37Speaker 1: the National Championship, seen it in the Super Bowl. They'll
- 9:40Speaker 1: take there there's a tendency in recent years in big
- 9:44Speaker 1: games and big matchups to go ahead and take the
- 9:47Speaker 1: underdog because they just feel like if they're if they
- 9:50Speaker 1: got to this point, if anyone could win the game.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So when we have a game during the regular season,
- 9:56Speaker 1: like with two of the most popular bettedt teams, uh,
- 10:00Speaker 1: we know that we're going to get a lot of
- 10:02Speaker 1: action from from the squares on the on the underdog,
- 10:05Speaker 1: but we try to keep the line as real as
- 10:08Speaker 1: we can without shading it too much. So we're, yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: we are inviting a little bit of money on that,
- 10:15Speaker 1: but we we know it's gonna come, so we're not
- 10:18Speaker 1: We're not fighting it. Similar question. I feel like this
- 10:23Speaker 1: turned into a very serious Yeah. But you know, I
- 10:28Speaker 1: watched the Calves Raptors game last night, and you see
- 10:30Speaker 1: that the Raptors totally fall apart, and all of a sudden,
- 10:33Speaker 1: there's the narrative that comes up in basketball, right, the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Raptors can't beat the Calves, they Kyle Lowry can't perform
- 10:39Speaker 1: in the playoffs. Um, they start to crumble, and all
- 10:43Speaker 1: I'm thinking about is how is this line going to
- 10:46Speaker 1: his exact right? Like the game last night, the game
- 10:50Speaker 1: closed it. What was it Raptors six and a half?
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think seven, and then tonight we've got Tomorrow night
- 10:57Speaker 1: it will be Raptors. My six is what it opened at.
- 11:00Speaker 1: If the Raptors win that game, what do you open
- 11:01Speaker 1: the game out? If the Raptors win Game two? Game one?
- 11:06Speaker 1: If the Raptors win game one, what do you open
- 11:09Speaker 1: the Raptors one? Last night we opened this game at
- 11:12Speaker 1: seven and a half, so we go, we go up.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So it's a point and a half difference in value
- 11:18Speaker 1: if the Raptors win versus had they lost and they
- 11:20Speaker 1: opened it sixth right, if they win and covered, I
- 11:23Speaker 1: mean obviously you know, uh, if they just win the
- 11:26Speaker 1: game by one like that, that game went over time
- 11:29Speaker 1: and they just barely squeaked it out, we probably would
- 11:31Speaker 1: have opened the same line as as we did in
- 11:33Speaker 1: in game one. But if they win and covered, probably
- 11:36Speaker 1: would open a little higher. And we you know the zigzag,
- 11:40Speaker 1: you know, we talked about all the time, but explain
- 11:42Speaker 1: the exact people might not know what it is. Yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 1: So when you get to the playoffs, whoever wins and
- 11:47Speaker 1: or or covers in one game, the tendency is for
- 11:50Speaker 1: the betters to go ahead and bet the opposite in
- 11:52Speaker 1: the next game, and particularly when you get I mean,
- 11:56Speaker 1: especially if they win two in a row and then
- 11:58Speaker 1: you figured they okay, they have to come back on
- 12:01Speaker 1: on the other side. So it hasn't really been panning out.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I mean if you follow the first couple, uh, first
- 12:08Speaker 1: round in the playoffs, and hasn't really panned out, especially
- 12:11Speaker 1: with the better teams like the Warriors. But it's been
- 12:16Speaker 1: the betting pattern and it kind of makes sense. You
- 12:18Speaker 1: don't want to go down oh two in a series,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and certainly don't want to go down all three in
- 12:22Speaker 1: the series. So you figure, especially if they're if the
- 12:26Speaker 1: team is getting points and they're already down a game, uh,
- 12:30Speaker 1: it makes sense to bet that team. I am so
- 12:33Speaker 1: going to go all in on the Raptors in game two.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I feel like they are a better team than they
- 12:39Speaker 1: have been in the past. I feel like they are
- 12:42Speaker 1: not going to have the kind of streak where they
- 12:43Speaker 1: go cold again like they did in the fourth quarter.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And I think there's gonna be so much hype on
- 12:48Speaker 1: what the Calves did and the Raptors cratering that like,
- 12:51Speaker 1: you're never going to get better value on the Raptors
- 12:53Speaker 1: than you are a six point favorites at home in
- 12:55Speaker 1: the game two. Yeah, probably, I mean, then they really can't,
- 12:58Speaker 1: like I said, they really can't order to go down
- 13:00Speaker 1: two games in this series. And uh and then just
- 13:03Speaker 1: give all the advantage of to Cleveland going back to
- 13:06Speaker 1: come back to Cleveland. So it's a real important game.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And you want to take my action right now if
- 13:12Speaker 1: you like. Since I don't have my sports book with me,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I mean, I can't, you know, be across state lines
- 13:18Speaker 1: and everything. So I'll just I'll just book you. Just
- 13:20Speaker 1: you give me, will you give me? I don't know. Listen,
- 13:25Speaker 1: that's wait. Now you're on Madison Avenue. Now, hey, wait
- 13:27Speaker 1: a minute. Now, you've got the rubber band around the
- 13:32Speaker 1: bank roll. As they say, you know, you don't get
- 13:37Speaker 1: to fly in private jets by making bad decks. Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: well that's true you and you fly on them all
- 13:43Speaker 1: the time. Now, So that's how I live. You know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you're gonna be a high roller. You gotta live like
- 13:49Speaker 1: a high roller. That's what I do. Um, you are
- 13:53Speaker 1: also a horse player. So let's talk a little bit
- 13:55Speaker 1: about the derby. Um let's see, there is Mendelssohn. Yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 1: well there's mad New Justify justifying the other co favorite
- 14:06Speaker 1: um audible, Um, I mean a lot of Pleacher Badford
- 14:11Speaker 1: and Dee Wayne Luke. I mean it's the same, the same,
- 14:14Speaker 1: same guys. I mean, you got to look for some
- 14:16Speaker 1: long shots and you know when you're bet in the Derby.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I mean some of my some of my biggest Derby
- 14:22Speaker 1: wins were just basically throwing darts, you know, especially with
- 14:25Speaker 1: the big field and anything can happen, and if you
- 14:28Speaker 1: got an outside post, I mean, it's it's not as
- 14:32Speaker 1: easy as it's not an easy race to handicap, especially
- 14:36Speaker 1: if you're handicap and horse racing throughout the year. This
- 14:39Speaker 1: is not your typical uh race, you know, to have
- 14:43Speaker 1: that large of a field and that much energy and
- 14:47Speaker 1: uh so, you know a lot of variables in there,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but that's what makes it fun. What is the most
- 14:52Speaker 1: you've ever won on the Kentucky Derby? Um, not a
- 14:56Speaker 1: whole lot. Probably about seven hundred dollars. It wasn't a lot. Seriously, Yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I don't, but I don't. I don't go in and
- 15:04Speaker 1: uh well, number one, I always lose on the Derby.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So you know, I'll bet all that long shots and
- 15:09Speaker 1: throw himan throw them in trifectas and everything, but I'm
- 15:12Speaker 1: I'm not firing it on on the derby. I leave
- 15:14Speaker 1: that for my dad. He loves that. So about I
- 15:18Speaker 1: don't know. Ten or twelve years ago, I was in
- 15:21Speaker 1: Vegas for a buddy's bachelor party, and this guy had
- 15:27Speaker 1: incredibly wealthy friends, and so it was like there were
- 15:31Speaker 1: ten guys crazy, crazy rich, and then me and another
- 15:35Speaker 1: buddy who like and all these guys came from like
- 15:38Speaker 1: really wealthy families, like families whose companies have gone public.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Um a company. Uh, one guy his dad owned multiple
- 15:47Speaker 1: professional sports teams, and um, you know, me and this
- 15:51Speaker 1: other guy just pikers, like we don't know anything, and
- 15:54Speaker 1: like we're barely getting by living in New Jersey. And
- 15:57Speaker 1: these guys are at like the you know, a hundred
- 16:00Speaker 1: dollar blackjack table and at dinner dinners like a three
- 16:04Speaker 1: thousand dollar tab and they're like, let's just pick out
- 16:07Speaker 1: of a hat to see, like let's play credit card
- 16:08Speaker 1: roulette and the loser has to pay the whole thing.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And my buddy and I were like, you know, and
- 16:14Speaker 1: so um, the next morning, like everyone goes out all
- 16:16Speaker 1: night and the next morning is the derby, and I
- 16:20Speaker 1: have breakfast with Alan Boston. I get up early. I
- 16:22Speaker 1: go to breakfast with Allan Boston and he's a big
- 16:25Speaker 1: horse guy, and he gives me a couple of tips
- 16:27Speaker 1: on who he likes in the derby. So I go
- 16:28Speaker 1: back and I'm talking to these guys and they read
- 16:31Speaker 1: the Odds, you know, your favorite book, and so they
- 16:34Speaker 1: knew Allan Boston, and so they're asking me what he said.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And I tell everybody what Alan Boston said about the derby,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and a couple of these guys like make bets on
- 16:41Speaker 1: what he said, including the guy whose family owned the
- 16:45Speaker 1: professional team, and uh, he made some sizeable bets on
- 16:50Speaker 1: some of the tips, and one of the bets cashed
- 16:53Speaker 1: and he won ten thousand dollars on the derby. Do
- 16:58Speaker 1: you think he like said thank you? Do you think
- 17:02Speaker 1: he like was unbelievably gracious for the rest of the weekend,
- 17:07Speaker 1: like nothing. It's like it's like no one else had
- 17:10Speaker 1: helped him make the decision at all. I'm so disappointed
- 17:15Speaker 1: in that to this day, as you can see, what
- 17:19Speaker 1: do you think that guy should have done? Give me
- 17:21Speaker 1: a Vegas code response for what he did? You know,
- 17:27Speaker 1: I'm just I'm looking back at some of my own Derby,
- 17:30Speaker 1: my own Derby stories, and and none of them are
- 17:33Speaker 1: very good. I mean, in all the years in the
- 17:37Speaker 1: sports book. I mean, I'll go back to my early,
- 17:41Speaker 1: my earliest days in the sports book. I was a
- 17:44Speaker 1: young supervisor. I wasn't even at the Stardust yet. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: was at the Fremont and there was a there was
- 17:49Speaker 1: a horse called a Razzie that had looked like a
- 17:52Speaker 1: monster horse in the Juveniles and the Breeders Cup, so
- 17:56Speaker 1: going into as a three year old, he was just
- 17:58Speaker 1: the clear face were to win the Derby, clear favor.
- 18:02Speaker 1: And at the time, I bet about as much as
- 18:03Speaker 1: I could afford on a horse. Uh and uh. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: I remember being at the counter and bet I had
- 18:12Speaker 1: already bet early in the day. And when the race
- 18:14Speaker 1: goes off, picture of sports book that most everyone's looking
- 18:19Speaker 1: at the race, and I've got a guy at the
- 18:21Speaker 1: counter begging me for a comp for a hot dog
- 18:25Speaker 1: as the race is going on, and I'm just, you know,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I'm trying to watch this race because I've got money
- 18:31Speaker 1: on it and a lot of money for me at
- 18:32Speaker 1: the time, and and this guy has just given me
- 18:35Speaker 1: the hardest time about a comp. I'm like, you know,
- 18:37Speaker 1: the race is on. It's the Kentucky Derby, and and
- 18:41Speaker 1: and I missed the entire race because I'm talking to
- 18:44Speaker 1: this guy and my horse just finished. I think he's
- 18:47Speaker 1: still running now, but he's so these are kind of
- 18:51Speaker 1: like my my memories of Derby's. I've never I've never
- 18:55Speaker 1: had a good Derby. The only one that I really
- 18:57Speaker 1: want a lot of money on was was Thunder. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: the only reason I bet on him was because it
- 19:02Speaker 1: was just pouring rain and I wasn't the night before,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and I was trying to navigate through flooded areas around Vegas.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And when I saw the name thunder Galt, I just
- 19:12Speaker 1: took a shot with him and he paid fifty one dollar.
- 19:14Speaker 1: So that's my best one. It's not it's not entertaining,
- 19:17Speaker 1: but that's my best. That's a great story, scoos. But
- 19:19Speaker 1: you didn't answer the question, which is this guy who's
- 19:23Speaker 1: loaded one ten grand on a tip that I gave
- 19:26Speaker 1: him and I didn't say thank you and didn't and
- 19:29Speaker 1: didn't give you a cut. I don't even think I
- 19:31Speaker 1: needed a cut, Like was I entitled to a cut?
- 19:34Speaker 1: I was Vegas Vegas code. I mean, especially somebody gives
- 19:38Speaker 1: you a horse especially if it's a tip, you gotta
- 19:41Speaker 1: give him something. I mean that that that is that's
- 19:44Speaker 1: an old code that's still in existence today. A matter
- 19:46Speaker 1: of fact, I have to make sure some of the
- 19:48Speaker 1: players in the race book don't hustle other customers, because
- 19:52Speaker 1: that's the thing, you know, Like the guys are in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the race book going up to some of the other
- 19:56Speaker 1: customers saying, hey, I got a hot horse for you,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and it may not really be a hot horse, but
- 19:59Speaker 1: they're is hoping that it wins, and then they give
- 20:02Speaker 1: him to give him a piece. So that's something I
- 20:04Speaker 1: have to watch for the race book. But but absolutely,
- 20:07Speaker 1: to answer your question, uh, you deserve a piece of that.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I mean that how much do you think I should
- 20:14Speaker 1: have got? I should have gotten a thousand dollars? Yeah, easy.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I mean would he have wanted if you can give
- 20:19Speaker 1: him the test, he would have been losing the whole weekend.
- 20:22Speaker 1: He would have been laying out chips, losing, chasing bad bets.
- 20:27Speaker 1: He would have known nothing. Yeah, yeah to this day.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And you met him. Actually, you know my old uh
- 20:35Speaker 1: college roommate who you know, very great, very wealthy guy,
- 20:40Speaker 1: And I actually met with him last week and he
- 20:43Speaker 1: still talks about a story thirty five years ago when
- 20:47Speaker 1: we came to Vegas from college. We took a weekend
- 20:51Speaker 1: and my dad gave him this hot tip the trainer
- 20:55Speaker 1: from Texas. He was doing things with the bullet workouts,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and he knew stuff that other people didn't know. And
- 21:02Speaker 1: he said, this horse is gonna be twenty to one.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Go ahead and at fifty bucks on him a hundred bucks.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And and my friends still talks about this. With all
- 21:11Speaker 1: the money he's got from other areas of life, he
- 21:13Speaker 1: thought that that was the greatest thing ever and how
- 21:15Speaker 1: much he was done, so like probably a hundred dollars
- 21:19Speaker 1: und I got, you got robbed. You know what I
- 21:23Speaker 1: got that day? I got a wicked sunburn. That's what
- 21:25Speaker 1: I ended up getting, Like a really bad sunburn, like
- 21:28Speaker 1: so bad. I remember I could barely bend my legs
- 21:31Speaker 1: on the flight home. It was a misorable flight. Hume, Wow,
- 21:35Speaker 1: that's horrible, it's horrible. Still friends with the guy, No,
- 21:39Speaker 1: I'm friends with the guy like the Bachelor, but I'm
- 21:42Speaker 1: not like the other guy. I didn't like the weekend
- 21:44Speaker 1: we were there. I thought it was kind of like
- 21:46Speaker 1: do she And that only confirmed it for me and
- 21:51Speaker 1: so no, I'm not friends. Don't you worried he's like
- 21:53Speaker 1: listening to this right now? Well, like, I remember that guy. Really,
- 21:58Speaker 1: I don't think I've spoken to him in twelve years,
- 22:00Speaker 1: so I don't think we're gonna reconnect. And the chance
- 22:03Speaker 1: is that he's the one listening to this podcast are
- 22:05Speaker 1: very very stock, I'll tell you that. Also, there's not
- 22:08Speaker 1: enough Like I happen to know a lot of guys
- 22:10Speaker 1: who own teams, and so they're not enough identifying because
- 22:13Speaker 1: I apply private so there's not enough identifying characteristics for
- 22:16Speaker 1: me to really to figure out who he is. All right,
- 22:20Speaker 1: give me who you think is going to win the
- 22:22Speaker 1: derby this weekend? Because I drink red wine, I'm gonna
- 22:25Speaker 1: go with Vino Rosa, which is red wine. What's Ena
- 22:28Speaker 1: Rosa going off that? Right now? I think twelve to
- 22:30Speaker 1: one one. Listen, I'm gonna go with Ena Rosa too.
- 22:35Speaker 1: What do I know? I hate going with the So
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, I've gone with so many favorites over the years,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and like I said, I don't have a good track record,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and one of the only ones I won was one shot,
- 22:46Speaker 1: So why not I'm going with Viena Rosa. Uh, coming
- 22:49Speaker 1: up next in the podcast Jason Sobel and Paula Duco
- 22:53Speaker 1: with honestly the two best gambling stories about athletes and
- 22:57Speaker 1: being inside the culture of sports that I have ever heard. Also, Lauduca,
- 23:01Speaker 1: who is a horse racing expert, gives you his take
- 23:03Speaker 1: on the derby, but mostly he was just telling a
- 23:05Speaker 1: crazy freaking story. Uh. Go rate and review the podcast
- 23:08Speaker 1: on the iTunes page of the buffet. Find us at
- 23:11Speaker 1: Action Network HQ, go to Action Network dot com. He
- 23:14Speaker 1: is Bob Scucci. Thanks for being in New York for this, buddy, Hey,
- 23:18Speaker 1: thanks for having me. All right, listen up to Laduca
- 23:20Speaker 1: and Sobel. As promised, we have to ridiculously fun gambling
- 23:28Speaker 1: stories that have been posted on Action network dot com
- 23:31Speaker 1: in the past twenty four hours, UM, that have been
- 23:34Speaker 1: picked up far and wide and getting a lot of attention.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And so uh, I got both of the guys who
- 23:39Speaker 1: wrote those stories on the show. I got Paul Laduca.
- 23:43Speaker 1: UH fan favorites. Action Network extraordinaire contributor who if people
- 23:51Speaker 1: only know him as sort of MLB all star veteran catcher,
- 23:56Speaker 1: UM beloved New York met and Dodger and Marlin, they
- 24:00Speaker 1: don't know that he has spent the past ten years
- 24:01Speaker 1: being a horse racing analyst for both tv G and
- 24:04Speaker 1: Fox and New York Racing Association and The Guide. I
- 24:08Speaker 1: think knows more about horse racing than he does about baseball.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And he wrote a ridiculously fun story about when he
- 24:15Speaker 1: won eighty grand on the Kentucky Derby and it was
- 24:18Speaker 1: all happening while he was in the middle of the game.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Paul's on the call, and then also Jason Sobel, who
- 24:23Speaker 1: wrote a story this morning about a night five years
- 24:26Speaker 1: ago today at the beginning of the Wells Fargo Tournament
- 24:29Speaker 1: that begins this weekend um in which he was out
- 24:32Speaker 1: with philm. Michelson with a bunch of other people at
- 24:34Speaker 1: a party and everybody got taken by Phil Mickelson in
- 24:38Speaker 1: what had to be a massive win from Michelson and
- 24:41Speaker 1: was a series of small, uh lacking in dignity losses
- 24:47Speaker 1: for everybody else inclusive, including Jason Sobel, who's on the call. Fellows,
- 24:52Speaker 1: what's going on, Jason. Good to hear from you. Paul,
- 24:55Speaker 1: good to hear from you. Your stories are great. They're
- 24:58Speaker 1: blowing things up, PAULI there's a lot going on right
- 25:02Speaker 1: now between the Derby and that story. Yeah, it was
- 25:05Speaker 1: an interesting story to right And when I when I
- 25:09Speaker 1: was thinking about it, I knew I wanted to write
- 25:11Speaker 1: the story. I mean, I've told like some of my
- 25:12Speaker 1: closest friends it. Um. And when one of my closest friends, Dave,
- 25:18Speaker 1: when when you read the article, it's through his eyes,
- 25:20Speaker 1: because um, I knew when I called him. I called
- 25:24Speaker 1: him about a week ago and I was like, bro,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I know you can tell the story just as good
- 25:28Speaker 1: as me because we were in this together. I want
- 25:30Speaker 1: your side of the story of you holding my ticket, uh,
- 25:34Speaker 1: because I couldn't make it because the game was scheduled
- 25:38Speaker 1: at a certain time right at the derby time, the
- 25:39Speaker 1: Marlins decided to schedule five twenty five game uh, and
- 25:44Speaker 1: I wanted to them to the readers to feel, Okay,
- 25:48Speaker 1: this is where we're here, my buddy who I sent
- 25:50Speaker 1: the best with. And then the story of me behind
- 25:53Speaker 1: the scenes when I'm playing the game basically in the
- 25:56Speaker 1: middle of the game as the Kentucky Derby's going down
- 25:59Speaker 1: the back stretch. So yeah, a lot going on this
- 26:02Speaker 1: first Saturday and May has always been a big thing
- 26:04Speaker 1: in in our household. I'm growing up. We're gonna get
- 26:08Speaker 1: to all of it. And we you know you talked
- 26:09Speaker 1: about on the podcast last week when you had this
- 26:11Speaker 1: phenomenal story in the podcast last week about as a
- 26:14Speaker 1: twelve year old making a bet for your dad that
- 26:18Speaker 1: cash at fifteen to one. It was a thousand dollar bet.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You won fifteen grand. And then we're arrested as soon
- 26:23Speaker 1: as you made the bet because you weren't supposed to
- 26:24Speaker 1: be making it, and the ticket taker got fired, and
- 26:27Speaker 1: your dad tipped her five g's because he felt bad
- 26:30Speaker 1: she got fired for taking your bet. Jason, you're gonna
- 26:34Speaker 1: come in. Uh, Paul's gonna tell his story in a minute,
- 26:37Speaker 1: but come in and tell the Nicholson story. Since you're
- 26:39Speaker 1: on site right now at the tournament, tell me about
- 26:43Speaker 1: the story that you wrote today on Actual network dot com. Yeah,
- 26:46Speaker 1: you want me to give you the whole story now.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I can't wait here. Paul story. Actually haven't read his
- 26:50Speaker 1: story yet, so I want to hear him tell his
- 26:51Speaker 1: story too. I want you to. I want you to
- 26:53Speaker 1: tell your story. And a reminder to everybody that, uh,
- 26:57Speaker 1: they should go rate the podcast on the iTunes page
- 27:00Speaker 1: for the buffet uh and they should also send in
- 27:04Speaker 1: questions that they have we are gonna start moving all
- 27:07Speaker 1: of our questions and answers to iTunes reviews. So if
- 27:10Speaker 1: you have questions for Jason, for me, for Laduca, for
- 27:13Speaker 1: anybody else in the Action Network universe, then um, you
- 27:17Speaker 1: need to go to the Action Network to the buffet
- 27:21Speaker 1: page and iTunes and send in your uh send in
- 27:25Speaker 1: your reviews, so and your questions to the reviews. Sorry,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I'm getting distracted because in a little bit Bob Scucci
- 27:31Speaker 1: is gonna come in and we're gonna record our podcast
- 27:33Speaker 1: face to face, and he's texting me right now. So, UM,
- 27:37Speaker 1: it distracted me. Jason, tell your story about Phil Micholson
- 27:40Speaker 1: and how he took you for your money. Yeah. So
- 27:43Speaker 1: this is five years ago to the day. I'm at
- 27:46Speaker 1: the Quail Hollow Club for the Wells Farga Championship and
- 27:51Speaker 1: being the lazy media member I am. I wait until
- 27:55Speaker 1: still was out on the sixteen two, which is right
- 27:57Speaker 1: behind the media center, and myself with what colleagues walked
- 28:00Speaker 1: out there to say I to fail catch up with
- 28:02Speaker 1: them and see him in a few weeks and we
- 28:04Speaker 1: walk out there and if you ever want to talk
- 28:06Speaker 1: to a professional golfer and you're covering an event, go
- 28:09Speaker 1: to the back night of a Wednesday pro am because
- 28:11Speaker 1: they will be more than happy to see even a
- 28:14Speaker 1: member of the media. So in any case, we start
- 28:16Speaker 1: walking down the Fairway and at one point Phil says,
- 28:19Speaker 1: so you guys come on Saturday night. We say, what
- 28:21Speaker 1: are you talking about? He said, Oh, I rented out
- 28:23Speaker 1: this restaurant, uh food, drinks all on me, and then
- 28:28Speaker 1: we're going to uh watch the Mayweather fight that night.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Mayweather was fighting a guy named the Ghost Guerrera, who
- 28:35Speaker 1: I had never heard of until I actually went back
- 28:37Speaker 1: and did a little research on what exactly happened that night.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So in any case, we we get there Saturday until
- 28:42Speaker 1: it was tied for the leave. I've written a column
- 28:44Speaker 1: on Phil Micholson ironically, uh that evening, and as soon
- 28:47Speaker 1: as I finished my column, I go to a party
- 28:49Speaker 1: being held and hosted by Phil Micholson and we go
- 28:52Speaker 1: in there fifty six people, uh, you know, a private
- 28:56Speaker 1: function and just just a nice little gathering, everyone having
- 28:59Speaker 1: a up with cocktails, everyone having a little pizza from
- 29:02Speaker 1: the place. I mean, you know, nothing special other than
- 29:04Speaker 1: you would recognize about half people in the place PJ
- 29:07Speaker 1: twour players and caddies and uh, so before the undercar
- 29:11Speaker 1: is about to start for the Mayweather fight, Phil stands
- 29:13Speaker 1: up in front of the room and says, look, guys, uh,
- 29:16Speaker 1: the staff here is terrific. Anything you need, they'll take
- 29:18Speaker 1: care of you. And just relax, enjoy yourselves, have fun.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And oh, by the way, wandering is encouraged. And so
- 29:24Speaker 1: the first fight of the undercard comes up, and there
- 29:27Speaker 1: might have been a couple of little bits here and there,
- 29:29Speaker 1: just uh just for guy's gettle action, but for the
- 29:31Speaker 1: most part, no one's really paying too much attention. And
- 29:33Speaker 1: then the second that was about to come on, and
- 29:36Speaker 1: still stands up in front of the room again says, well, guys,
- 29:39Speaker 1: I know I said I wouldn't make another announcement, but
- 29:42Speaker 1: got the second fight. Uh got this guy l Explode
- 29:46Speaker 1: Civo is his nickname, Alexander Munio's. He has uh thirty
- 29:50Speaker 1: career and knockouts. This guy has been going at it forever.
- 29:53Speaker 1: This guy's held titles. UM very good fighter, and he's
- 29:57Speaker 1: going against this this young kid who's moving up to
- 30:00Speaker 1: weight class. He's fighting for the super bantam weight title.
- 30:02Speaker 1: He's never fought in this class before, and you know what,
- 30:05Speaker 1: he's an underdog, but I'm killing this kid, so I'll
- 30:08Speaker 1: take any bets you've got and even money. If anyone
- 30:11Speaker 1: wants to bet me, I'll take the kid. I'll take
- 30:12Speaker 1: the underdog. Now here's the point where all of us,
- 30:16Speaker 1: knowing Phil Nicholson, should have done a little too diligence.
- 30:19Speaker 1: What we would have found is that this kid was
- 30:22Speaker 1: five and oh the year before and one of the
- 30:24Speaker 1: more promising boxers in the entire world. Instead, we all
- 30:27Speaker 1: just raise our hands and start weaving money around, saying, sure, Phil,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I'll do that. Sounds great. I'll take the favorite and
- 30:34Speaker 1: even money. Why not? And so the bolt starts and
- 30:38Speaker 1: it was over the minute it started. Uh. Phil's guy
- 30:41Speaker 1: just started bumbling our guy. Uh through Uh A nice
- 30:45Speaker 1: little combination in the first round. Again, in the second round,
- 30:48Speaker 1: he's ahead on all the judges card. Finally, a minute
- 30:51Speaker 1: into the fifth round he wins by technical knockout. Phil
- 30:55Speaker 1: then walks around the room plucks the cash out of
- 30:58Speaker 1: everybody's hands, and, as I wrote the piece, h a
- 31:02Speaker 1: dumbfounded champion. He played the role very well where he
- 31:04Speaker 1: walked up and people said, man, I'm really sorry about
- 31:07Speaker 1: that boy. I just got lucky there, you know. I
- 31:09Speaker 1: guess I was just a lucky win for me, And
- 31:11Speaker 1: then I didn't think that wasn't happened and just playing
- 31:15Speaker 1: the part of perfection took my took my hundred from me,
- 31:19Speaker 1: and I was happy to give it to him because
- 31:21Speaker 1: I still can tell the story now. It wasn't ntil
- 31:24Speaker 1: I left and I was driving back to my hotel
- 31:27Speaker 1: later that night when I realized Phil played all of us.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Phil invited us to this restaurant, was the generous host,
- 31:35Speaker 1: paid for everything, probably made double what he had paid
- 31:39Speaker 1: to rent the place out for the night just on
- 31:41Speaker 1: those bets alone. And knowing Phil, he probably tipped out
- 31:45Speaker 1: all the profit to the white staff and wound up
- 31:48Speaker 1: even for the night and wins the good Guy Award
- 31:51Speaker 1: just for hosting everybody. So it is a classic Phil
- 31:54Speaker 1: Nicholson story. Um, I've been waiting to tell it for years,
- 31:57Speaker 1: and this being the five year anniversary of that week,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I figured as a perfect fun to all that story
- 32:01Speaker 1: you got snickerd by Phil Nicholson completely probably let me
- 32:09Speaker 1: ask them James, did he break down the fighter before?
- 32:12Speaker 1: He told you guys like he broke them down? He basically,
- 32:15Speaker 1: I mean he did without giving us all of the
- 32:18Speaker 1: information and that's why it was But it was such
- 32:22Speaker 1: a good move by Still. I mean, you know, it's
- 32:24Speaker 1: as if someone had said to you last night, Hey, uh,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know the Warriors. You know they're kind of old,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and you know that they've got one of the biggest
- 32:32Speaker 1: stars injured, and uh, if you guys want the Pelicans,
- 32:35Speaker 1: you guys can take the Pelicans. You know, they've got
- 32:37Speaker 1: maybe the best player in the NBA. It's got a
- 32:38Speaker 1: dominant inside. No one can guard him. Um, if if
- 32:41Speaker 1: you guys want to take the Pelicans, I guess I'll
- 32:43Speaker 1: take Warriors. And it's very much as if he had
- 32:46Speaker 1: sort of given you the information without giving you all
- 32:48Speaker 1: of the information, and yeah, if he he kind of
- 32:50Speaker 1: played down this young kid who was moving up a
- 32:52Speaker 1: weight class, and you know, I guess I'll take him,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know, just just for the hell of it, just
- 32:57Speaker 1: we can have some action going on. And what we
- 32:59Speaker 1: all didn't realized, of course, we didn't look up this guy.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Uh Leo's Santa Cruz, I believe it was his name,
- 33:05Speaker 1: and he was more and more promising. I'm not a
- 33:07Speaker 1: big boxing guy, but who's one of the more promising
- 33:10Speaker 1: boxers out there? And apparently uh the guy showed his
- 33:13Speaker 1: stuff that night, because I remember watching it, like a
- 33:16Speaker 1: minute into the fight, we're looking at each other like, okay,
- 33:19Speaker 1: we just lost. We knew it right away. Uh. I
- 33:24Speaker 1: just love that. I love everything about that story. But
- 33:26Speaker 1: there's one thing that I can't figure out. How common
- 33:30Speaker 1: is it on this Saturday night of a tournament for like,
- 33:35Speaker 1: for there to be a party. Probably not very common,
- 33:40Speaker 1: but not uncommon either, I think still still, for whatever reason,
- 33:44Speaker 1: does it in Charlotte just about every year. That's the
- 33:46Speaker 1: only one that I've been to personally. Um I've covered
- 33:49Speaker 1: this tournament kind of on and off over the last
- 33:50Speaker 1: twelve years or so. Um, so I'm not always here.
- 33:55Speaker 1: But he does it a lot. Look, especially as he
- 33:58Speaker 1: was in the last pair because he was tied for
- 34:01Speaker 1: the lead going into Sunday, you've got to do something
- 34:03Speaker 1: sorry night to keep you busy. If you go home
- 34:06Speaker 1: or back to the hotel and go to sleep at
- 34:08Speaker 1: nine o'clock at night, you're gonna wake up at six
- 34:10Speaker 1: in the morning with at two o'clock tea time and
- 34:12Speaker 1: have no idea what to do with yourself for a while.
- 34:15Speaker 1: So uh and and as I wrote the start, soil
- 34:18Speaker 1: was tipping on a red wine. I don't want to
- 34:19Speaker 1: make it down like this is some crazy party until
- 34:22Speaker 1: it's tied to the lead and uh he's hammering down
- 34:25Speaker 1: shots or anything like that. At the bar, he was
- 34:27Speaker 1: sipping on a glass of red wine. It was a
- 34:29Speaker 1: very sort of casual party. There was nothing out of
- 34:32Speaker 1: control other than our gambling losses. I just love the idea.
- 34:36Speaker 1: It's sort of the antithesis of I can tell you
- 34:39Speaker 1: right now, the Super Bowl has played at what six
- 34:42Speaker 1: in the afternoon, six in the evening, and nobody is
- 34:46Speaker 1: like there's no casual get together the night before the game,
- 34:49Speaker 1: or like all the players are hanging out so they'll
- 34:51Speaker 1: sleep a little later. Like Polly, you played professional baseball
- 34:54Speaker 1: at the highest level for a long time. You guys
- 34:56Speaker 1: made the playoffs. You went to an NLCS, Like, tell
- 35:00Speaker 1: me on the day of that, like the night before
- 35:03Speaker 1: a game when the game was having a seven oh
- 35:04Speaker 1: five start, What were you doing the night before? Um,
- 35:08Speaker 1: you know you you could do what you wanted to.
- 35:11Speaker 1: It depended, you know. I played every day, so it
- 35:13Speaker 1: was different catching. Uh did I go out and have
- 35:16Speaker 1: my fun on the Long Island? Yeah? I mean that
- 35:18Speaker 1: was the one great thing about playing in New York
- 35:20Speaker 1: when I was with the Mets or in l A
- 35:23Speaker 1: is that they recognize you and they camped you in
- 35:25Speaker 1: those kind of places. I can remember No. Six when
- 35:27Speaker 1: we had a good Mets you know, I didn't pay
- 35:29Speaker 1: for one meal on Long Island. But we used to
- 35:32Speaker 1: try to keep it to once, you know, one time,
- 35:36Speaker 1: one time a night, or one time a week, or
- 35:39Speaker 1: if we had a Sunday night game on ESPN and
- 35:42Speaker 1: we maybe go out on Saturday night, or if we
- 35:44Speaker 1: had a Thursday off we got on Wednesday. We tried
- 35:47Speaker 1: to keep it, you know, somewhat too you know, not
- 35:52Speaker 1: too much party. And the thing is, when you play
- 35:53Speaker 1: every day, you just can't do it. Now, if you're
- 35:55Speaker 1: a pitcher and you're playing pitching once every five days,
- 35:58Speaker 1: you could do that kind of stuff. But I mean
- 36:01Speaker 1: me catching nine in the game. The perception is all
- 36:04Speaker 1: guys go out and party. Guys do a lot of
- 36:06Speaker 1: different things to to do stuff that might have been
- 36:10Speaker 1: the case of some guys. And yeah, I'm not wasn't
- 36:12Speaker 1: an angel, But most of the time you're not going
- 36:14Speaker 1: out and getting slaughtered before you gotta play a game
- 36:16Speaker 1: the next day. I don't even think it's like it's
- 36:19Speaker 1: about getting slaughter. Like just the idea that the idea
- 36:24Speaker 1: that there's a late game the next day and you
- 36:26Speaker 1: don't want to be up at six o'clock in the morning.
- 36:28Speaker 1: It's so an anthema to how people usually think about
- 36:33Speaker 1: what you were doing the night before as an athlete.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I actually I have no judgment done this, Like I
- 36:39Speaker 1: actually think it's a good idea. Why not go out
- 36:41Speaker 1: the night before relaxed, like get your mind off everything.
- 36:44Speaker 1: I I'll never forget a story before Miguel Cabra came
- 36:49Speaker 1: out with his struggles with alcohol um and he publicly
- 36:53Speaker 1: said it. I played with him with the Marlins and
- 36:56Speaker 1: he showed up one day. Uh, he had a one
- 37:00Speaker 1: o'clock game. He showed up to the ballpark at twelve
- 37:03Speaker 1: thirties and Jack McKean came up to me and said,
- 37:07Speaker 1: what should we do? I gotta sit him? And we
- 37:09Speaker 1: were in the middle of the playoff run. I'm like,
- 37:11Speaker 1: I can't have a guy show up. I'm like, there's
- 37:13Speaker 1: fifteen games left basically in the season. Jack, do you
- 37:17Speaker 1: suspend them? Now? What are you gonna do? Who cares?
- 37:21Speaker 1: And you know, he obviously was pisched drunk that night.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I don't know, you could smell it a little bit.
- 37:26Speaker 1: He had three home runs. You you tell me like
- 37:32Speaker 1: I watched the guy pisched drunk kid three home runs.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I also watched a guy pissed drunk kid to walk
- 37:36Speaker 1: off home run one of the first articles that I played.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Some guys are better. They played better intoxicated. It takes
- 37:44Speaker 1: a k away the nerves or or it takes away
- 37:46Speaker 1: this and that. You know, he was playing on thinking.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I think mcgel thought he was having an off day,
- 37:51Speaker 1: so he went out. We had a day game the
- 37:52Speaker 1: next day and Jack Trader Jack was putting him in
- 37:55Speaker 1: the lineup, and I remember he was like okay, and
- 37:58Speaker 1: he came to the ballpark in four for four with
- 38:01Speaker 1: three home runs, Like this guy is that good? So
- 38:04Speaker 1: you know, I don't judge guys if they come to
- 38:06Speaker 1: the ballpark drunk and they don't hit. It's like the
- 38:08Speaker 1: Harvey thing. They say, oh, he pitched well, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 1: it's only gonna be an issue until he pitches bad
- 38:14Speaker 1: where he plays bad and they come and they show
- 38:16Speaker 1: up to the ballpark drunk. You know, listen, I think
- 38:18Speaker 1: everyone will tell you that I'm a much better podcast.
- 38:20Speaker 1: I was drunk than sober. And as soon as I
- 38:22Speaker 1: start doing drunk, I think the numbers, the numbers for
- 38:25Speaker 1: this podcast are gonna rise. Let me give it. Let
- 38:31Speaker 1: me give you a quick story. Uh, Monday and Tuesday
- 38:34Speaker 1: are kind of the usual party nights, even like a
- 38:36Speaker 1: Sunday nights. Guys are flying. A lot of guys fly
- 38:38Speaker 1: private and Sunday night after a long week, I'll uh
- 38:42Speaker 1: throwback few drinks on the plane. But Monday Tuesday night,
- 38:45Speaker 1: you can get away with it. He was kind of
- 38:46Speaker 1: easing your way into the week. So true story. Last night,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I go out of a couple of buddies who worked
- 38:51Speaker 1: for the SEC network here in Charlotte. So we got together,
- 38:55Speaker 1: we went out and had dinner, and I'm coming back
- 38:57Speaker 1: to the hotel. I get in the yellow vater um
- 39:00Speaker 1: in about eleven fifteen eleven thirty last night, and there's
- 39:03Speaker 1: a guy holding a drink stumbling into the elevator and
- 39:06Speaker 1: I'm looking at him and he kind of smiles at me.
- 39:08Speaker 1: He goes rough night. He goes, all I can tell
- 39:11Speaker 1: you don't bet on Ricky and Rory this week. Look
- 39:14Speaker 1: at that? Oh yeah, why is that? He goes, Oh,
- 39:17Speaker 1: I was out with him tonight, and I tell you
- 39:20Speaker 1: they can't recover after this. And and of course Ricky
- 39:24Speaker 1: and Rarrior to the betting favorites this week. I like
- 39:26Speaker 1: both of them. They've each one year at Quell Hollow,
- 39:29Speaker 1: so I really like him. And I'm sitting there, of course,
- 39:32Speaker 1: trying to disseminate this inflation, like do I want to
- 39:34Speaker 1: listen to the guy who's stumbling into the elevator and
- 39:37Speaker 1: thirty at night on a Tuesday night, And they said
- 39:40Speaker 1: he kind of predictions and bets off of that. Probably not,
- 39:44Speaker 1: And yet it's going to be in the back of
- 39:45Speaker 1: my mind the entire week. If Rory and Ricky don't
- 39:48Speaker 1: play well, come Sunday, after you I'm gonna be thinking
- 39:50Speaker 1: about that guy in the elevator. I am because of
- 39:56Speaker 1: that story. That's like getting a bathroom tid Milzy. It's
- 39:59Speaker 1: like going to the bathroom and getting a tip on
- 40:01Speaker 1: a horse. If you're at the racetrack, fortunes are made
- 40:09Speaker 1: in the bathroom. That's how you win. Uh it pray
- 40:14Speaker 1: that's a great story by jameson there. Because you do,
- 40:17Speaker 1: you hear so many different stories, Oh, don't play on
- 40:19Speaker 1: this horse, or don't bet I'm this guy. This guy
- 40:22Speaker 1: was doing this, this guy was doing that. Uh, there's
- 40:26Speaker 1: so many different theories and in some aspects, would you
- 40:30Speaker 1: agree don't you need to handicap somewhat the handicapper. Yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 1: that's a great point. And I mean, I you know,
- 40:37Speaker 1: look at the source, and I mean the guy, the
- 40:40Speaker 1: guy couldn't have done any better for me if I
- 40:43Speaker 1: had walked up to him and said, Hi, I'm Jason
- 40:45Speaker 1: Silbel of the Action Network. I'm trying to handicap this
- 40:47Speaker 1: week's field. What do you think of the favorites? I
- 40:49Speaker 1: mean it's almost like I set him up for the
- 40:52Speaker 1: question and he's like, Oh, I got something good for
- 40:54Speaker 1: you here, let me, let me, let me give it
- 40:56Speaker 1: to you. I mean, the guy looked at me, has
- 40:57Speaker 1: no idea why, and I'm not wearing any golf clothes
- 40:59Speaker 1: or any thing like that. Uh, it just works out. Yeah,
- 41:03Speaker 1: don't don't bet on Rickey and Moory this week. I mean,
- 41:09Speaker 1: I think handicapping the handicapper is actually there should be
- 41:12Speaker 1: like a subset for that, because you're right, like, can
- 41:15Speaker 1: you trust this guy or not? Paul Tell tell the
- 41:18Speaker 1: tell the story that you wrote about when you won
- 41:20Speaker 1: eighty grand on the derby and and you were like,
- 41:23Speaker 1: how did you make the bet? How did you decide
- 41:26Speaker 1: how much money did you put down? Originally, give us
- 41:28Speaker 1: the details on that, like what was it like when
- 41:30Speaker 1: you're in the dugout and your buddies got this ticket
- 41:32Speaker 1: and you're trying to figure out if this is gonna
- 41:34Speaker 1: cash or not. Well, yeah, the story goes back to
- 41:38Speaker 1: it was oh five, and I became good friends. They're
- 41:41Speaker 1: great friends with Mike Smith, the Hall of Fame jockey,
- 41:43Speaker 1: because we lived above each other. Um. He actually went
- 41:46Speaker 1: to superintendent one day and complained because our schedules are
- 41:49Speaker 1: in the same so almost like golfers in and baseball players.
- 41:53Speaker 1: You know, golfer's gotta be up staying with jockeys at
- 41:55Speaker 1: five in the morning, and I would be up at like,
- 41:58Speaker 1: you know, midnight coming home from the game means. And
- 42:00Speaker 1: he was complaining I was making too much noise. We
- 42:02Speaker 1: became friends. So fast forward about a year later. Gives
- 42:06Speaker 1: me this horse called Jacobo in a maiden race. I
- 42:09Speaker 1: bet out on the horse that day. I think I
- 42:11Speaker 1: had five hundred across. I played some exact as I
- 42:14Speaker 1: had made about oh five to ten thousand somewhere in
- 42:18Speaker 1: that area. Now the horse was a deep closer. He
- 42:20Speaker 1: had run into San Nino Derby. There's no pace in
- 42:23Speaker 1: the Santa Nida Derby at all, so he needs pace
- 42:27Speaker 1: to run into these horses to run into. So Mike
- 42:30Speaker 1: had told me, I really feel he has a big shot. Now.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I had bet futures after his maiden win in Vegas.
- 42:36Speaker 1: The crazy part is the futures were less than what
- 42:40Speaker 1: he paid on track that day. I think I got
- 42:42Speaker 1: him at forty and forty five to one because I
- 42:45Speaker 1: knew he was bred to get the Derby distance. Now,
- 42:48Speaker 1: the day of the derby, the Marlins side the schedule
- 42:52Speaker 1: a five games, and the Derby's about set to go off.
- 42:55Speaker 1: It like it's so eight somewhere in that area. And
- 42:59Speaker 1: usually know you played seven o'clock games on a Saturday,
- 43:03Speaker 1: or you play at one o'clock game. This is the
- 43:05Speaker 1: weirdest start time. I don't know why they decided to
- 43:07Speaker 1: do it this. So now I'm I'm thinking, all right,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna miss the derby. So it starts to rain, Okay, Now,
- 43:15Speaker 1: I uh, you could Old Joel Robbie Stadium where the
- 43:19Speaker 1: Marlins and the Dolphins used to play. You could throw
- 43:22Speaker 1: a stone to the old call the race course which
- 43:24Speaker 1: is now gold Stream Park West. My good friend Mike
- 43:27Speaker 1: Welch and Dave will Howard we used to go over there,
- 43:30Speaker 1: and and our third base coach, which was uh Coxy
- 43:34Speaker 1: Greg Cox. We used to um go over there bet
- 43:39Speaker 1: the races at around noon one. Back in those days
- 43:43Speaker 1: you had tebow. Uh you'd go play the game, you'd
- 43:46Speaker 1: go watch it. Well, it comes to Derby Day, I
- 43:49Speaker 1: give all my bets to Coxy. I'm telling him, listen,
- 43:52Speaker 1: this is what I want. I want, uh because I
- 43:56Speaker 1: gotta be there early for the game. You know when
- 43:58Speaker 1: I was catching those days and oh five, I was
- 44:01Speaker 1: had a bad hamstring, so I had to be there
- 44:03Speaker 1: I think at noon. I was usually there are five
- 44:05Speaker 1: hours before the game. So I'm giving them all these bets.
- 44:08Speaker 1: I put five hundred to win a place on the horse.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I had picked fours galore, which is you know, picked
- 44:13Speaker 1: the four races before that, three races before that into him. Um.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I had futures on them. I had I would say,
- 44:20Speaker 1: close to two and futures on them that we're gonna
- 44:23Speaker 1: pay me back close to nine to ten grand somewhere
- 44:26Speaker 1: in that area. Um I had probably bet close to
- 44:30Speaker 1: I would say completely on the race, maybe a little
- 44:33Speaker 1: bit less about five thousand to consider the props. So
- 44:38Speaker 1: now the rain, the way ends, and I'm the Derby's
- 44:43Speaker 1: like fifteen minutes post. I'm like, oh, hey, the rain.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I'm looking outside. I data call, hey, guys, go to
- 44:49Speaker 1: the bullpen. Start warming up. They're gonna start the game
- 44:52Speaker 1: at six oh five. I'm like, you've got to be
- 44:54Speaker 1: killing me. The Derby post is six o eight. It's
- 44:56Speaker 1: just insane, so unlike I gotta go down to the bullpen.
- 45:02Speaker 1: And I was always the catcher that I always finished
- 45:06Speaker 1: off the picture, like the books, I Catch you catcher
- 45:08Speaker 1: would start then I got Backett. I'm getting back Gett
- 45:11Speaker 1: finished in the game. You know, you stay away from
- 45:15Speaker 1: the starting pitcher. Meanwhile, all the other position players know
- 45:19Speaker 1: I got the Derby, and uh, you know I had
- 45:21Speaker 1: bet the Derby. And you always have a Derby pool.
- 45:24Speaker 1: You know you have twenty twenty guys. You all are
- 45:26Speaker 1: throwing fifty or a hunter bucks and he's throwing out
- 45:28Speaker 1: of a hat. I even paid, I forget who I paid.
- 45:31Speaker 1: I even paid somebody for the Jocko bill because when
- 45:33Speaker 1: they saw fifty to one. They said, no chance. I'm like,
- 45:36Speaker 1: I'll buy that from you for two because it was
- 45:39Speaker 1: the pool. Two thousand goes to the winner. It was
- 45:42Speaker 1: a hundred dollars in you pick a horse out of
- 45:44Speaker 1: the hat. So now we're out on the field and
- 45:47Speaker 1: we're playing, and I can look in the dugout and
- 45:53Speaker 1: Mike Lowe has the day off, Jeff Conine has the
- 45:56Speaker 1: day off, and a couple other guys, Doncho Willis. They're
- 45:59Speaker 1: all pointing to me like there's like going in the gate.
- 46:02Speaker 1: I'm on the field, so boom, next kitch, groundball, double play.
- 46:07Speaker 1: We get at the inning, so I literally I'm run
- 46:12Speaker 1: into the cloudouse. I'm running in the class guy. All
- 46:15Speaker 1: my gear on. The horses are on the back side,
- 46:19Speaker 1: so they're running up the backside. Tom Durkin's making the
- 46:21Speaker 1: call and all this chaos. It's a big, big, you know,
- 46:26Speaker 1: Calvary charge going to the gams and fleet Alex is
- 46:29Speaker 1: the favorite. He goes to the front or he's right there,
- 46:31Speaker 1: and then I can hear him say Jacobo. That's all
- 46:34Speaker 1: I heard, remember Tom Durkins saying the race caller, and
- 46:38Speaker 1: I just started going nuts, and it seemed like maybe
- 46:42Speaker 1: a minute was like five and segments. I'm high five
- 46:46Speaker 1: and every clubhouse guy because here's the deal. I'm telling
- 46:50Speaker 1: every single guy with the Marlins, I like this horse. Okay,
- 46:53Speaker 1: they're all telling me I'm crazy. Where the Cloudouse kids
- 46:57Speaker 1: are all staying, hey, I'm gonna put at these five
- 46:59Speaker 1: bucks across well, all the Claubouse kids are giving me
- 47:01Speaker 1: high fives. We're going not this and that. I look
- 47:06Speaker 1: up and I just lost track of time. The bad
- 47:09Speaker 1: boy comes running in and goes, hey, Duke, what are
- 47:12Speaker 1: you doing. I'm like what? Because the umpires were waiting
- 47:15Speaker 1: for you for a minute. You're on deck, you're writing.
- 47:19Speaker 1: So I'm like what. So I literally run. So I
- 47:22Speaker 1: wrent out to the to the dugout. Mckenns like, hey, hey,
- 47:26Speaker 1: he always used to call me DeLuca, DeLuca, where are
- 47:28Speaker 1: you been? He never knew my name, which was great
- 47:30Speaker 1: Jack for the bat like, and I'm like, uh, don't
- 47:36Speaker 1: worry about yeah. So I took off all my gear
- 47:39Speaker 1: and I could see Lowell and all those guys are
- 47:42Speaker 1: like smiling, laughing, don't want to say nothing, And I
- 47:46Speaker 1: was like, I forget it was pitching this as I
- 47:49Speaker 1: wish I was pitching bat. I tapped the catcher and
- 47:53Speaker 1: I'm like, I was like, listen, I just want eight
- 47:56Speaker 1: thousand dollars on the derby. Tell the pictures to throw
- 47:58Speaker 1: the ball right down the middle, and I am gonna
- 48:01Speaker 1: ground out. And I did. I grounded out the shortstops
- 48:05Speaker 1: so weakly, and I ran down the first I didn't
- 48:08Speaker 1: even feel my feet touched the ground. Now happy I've
- 48:13Speaker 1: ever had in my life. I ran into the dugout.
- 48:16Speaker 1: And then when I ran into the dugout, my gear
- 48:20Speaker 1: was still in the clubhouse because I took my gear
- 48:22Speaker 1: off in the clubhouse. Had to go back to the
- 48:23Speaker 1: cluboff because I wanted to make sure did he win?
- 48:26Speaker 1: Who ran second? And all this all the other crazy stuff.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I I think, like I knew I had won, but
- 48:32Speaker 1: then I didn't know I had won. And that's why
- 48:34Speaker 1: I wrote the article. My buddy had the tickets over
- 48:38Speaker 1: at calder He called the clubhouse to to alert me
- 48:43Speaker 1: to horse one because he's thinking I'm playing, and he
- 48:47Speaker 1: can hear me in the background, and he carry off
- 48:49Speaker 1: the phone. He would never call the club out, but
- 48:51Speaker 1: he hung up the phone because the cluboff guy goes, Dude,
- 48:54Speaker 1: who the heck are you like he didn't know who
- 48:56Speaker 1: he was when it was my buddy just calling up saying, hey, bro,
- 48:59Speaker 1: you just want to shoot the money. That is one
- 49:03Speaker 1: of the best sports stories I've ever heard. I was insane, insane.
- 49:08Speaker 1: I was something I'll never forget. And it's like one
- 49:12Speaker 1: of your friends, Mike Smith wins the race. It's one
- 49:15Speaker 1: of the longest shots and one of the chances. Very
- 49:19Speaker 1: rarely do you you're you're getting paid on track more
- 49:23Speaker 1: or like say, like then you you've gotten futured? What
- 49:26Speaker 1: four months earlier? I mean, I thought the horse would
- 49:28Speaker 1: be like twenty to one come Derby Day, but he
- 49:30Speaker 1: tanked and his other other starts to be fifty two
- 49:32Speaker 1: one on Derby Day. Oh my god, Um listen, uh.
- 49:39Speaker 1: I think one thing I do have to do is, um,
- 49:43Speaker 1: you are our horse racing expert at Action Network, So
- 49:50Speaker 1: I do need you to give me like your top
- 49:53Speaker 1: three favorites for the Derby before I let you guys go.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Um well, I do like Magna Moon, Um, he's trying
- 50:03Speaker 1: to break a curse. No horse has won the Derby
- 50:08Speaker 1: that hasn't started to race at age two since Apollo
- 50:12Speaker 1: did it in eight two. Now, Bodie meister almost did it.
- 50:16Speaker 1: He ran second last year. Uh horse rams third that
- 50:21Speaker 1: was there, but he was a distance third. I can't
- 50:24Speaker 1: remember his name of body. Mister just lost. I'll have another.
- 50:27Speaker 1: It's the trend that I think is gonna get cracked
- 50:29Speaker 1: sooner or later. Magna Moon's first start was on January thirteen,
- 50:33Speaker 1: So you're telling me that curse is fourteen days if
- 50:36Speaker 1: he starts on December thirtieth. There's no such thing. I
- 50:40Speaker 1: just think he's the real deal. He's four for four,
- 50:42Speaker 1: he's won over three different race tracks. He won the
- 50:45Speaker 1: Arkansas Derby. I really thought he was very good at Arkansas.
- 50:48Speaker 1: He's my number one. Justified for Baffort is number two.
- 50:52Speaker 1: He's the same horse. He's trying to break the same curse.
- 50:55Speaker 1: The two horses that are probably gonna be favorite did
- 50:57Speaker 1: not start as two year old. But Bob Bafford would
- 51:01Speaker 1: be the great Papovitch, the Bill Belichick of horse trainers.
- 51:04Speaker 1: He's the best of all time. So that's why you
- 51:08Speaker 1: got to include him. And then it would probably be Mendelsohn.
- 51:11Speaker 1: He's a wild card horse. He's a horse. This is
- 51:15Speaker 1: a crazy horse. It's europe best camp. They have never
- 51:19Speaker 1: ever won a Derby since Thing Bold Arrangement ran second.
- 51:24Speaker 1: But they have brought horses over from Europe from Kentucky
- 51:26Speaker 1: and have tried and tried. Last year that brought over
- 51:28Speaker 1: a horse called Thunders who started bucking out of the
- 51:31Speaker 1: gate and and just lost his race, and he ended
- 51:35Speaker 1: up winning the Dude Bai World Cup. So he's a
- 51:36Speaker 1: real horse. It's just a hard thing to do. But
- 51:39Speaker 1: this horse, Mendelston, they paid three million four and he's
- 51:42Speaker 1: a brother to Instan Mission Instan Miissive is a sire
- 51:46Speaker 1: to one of the horses in the race, Audible, who's
- 51:48Speaker 1: gonna be one of the choices too. So a giant
- 51:51Speaker 1: pedigree that they paid three million dollars for that is
- 51:54Speaker 1: a definitely a wild card. So those will be my
- 51:57Speaker 1: top three horses. But I do love Magna Moon. I'm
- 52:00Speaker 1: going with Mendelssohn. I love Royalty. I'm a huge fan.
- 52:03Speaker 1: I might even go to England. I said this to you, you, Jason,
- 52:07Speaker 1: doesn't he seem like a teen crumpet kind of guy.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Maybe we lost, so maybe I lost. I'm thinking I
- 52:14Speaker 1: thought you guys are still going. I've got one other
- 52:17Speaker 1: guy that told me Mendelsohn. I don't hey, de Luca, Luca,
- 52:22Speaker 1: I don't even think. I don't even think sob heard
- 52:24Speaker 1: you're the way you ripped me. I think he was
- 52:27Speaker 1: like fading out hard dig and he did not come
- 52:31Speaker 1: back for it. Yeah, I was asking you. You you
- 52:33Speaker 1: you picture Millman as a tea and crumpet guy. He
- 52:36Speaker 1: likes the bread. Oh I miss that. Yeah, no, yeah,
- 52:39Speaker 1: I can see that. Yeah, by the way ian crumpet guy,
- 52:43Speaker 1: you know, getting served on the silver platters, like, yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 1: all that stuff. Listen, funk, both of you. Also, what
- 52:51Speaker 1: the funk are you doing that? You did? Like you
- 52:53Speaker 1: you just faded out like you weren't even listening. Are
- 52:55Speaker 1: you not engaging in the podcast? What happened? Scores? I'm
- 53:00Speaker 1: trying to work here, I got you know, I'm trying
- 53:03Speaker 1: to like multitask as I'm doing. I don't know you
- 53:05Speaker 1: guys had covered for a while. I do, but I
- 53:10Speaker 1: will kind of make up for it. Chat. I want
- 53:12Speaker 1: to double down on my phil story and give you
- 53:14Speaker 1: one more. Alright, I make up to my brief absence.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Go ahead, Okay, So here here's an inside the rope
- 53:24Speaker 1: still story and uh, the the Tuesday money game, which
- 53:28Speaker 1: was sort of celebrated for a few years. It's it's
- 53:31Speaker 1: kind of dissipated a little bit. I think the Tours
- 53:34Speaker 1: put the kai bosh on it. They just don't like
- 53:36Speaker 1: the whole attention and bringing towards gambling, and it's not whatever.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It was great. It probably lasted three or four years.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Phil Nicholson was the commissioner of the Tuesday Game, and
- 53:47Speaker 1: on any given week you'd have some combination of Phil,
- 53:51Speaker 1: Dustin Johnson, Ricky Fowler, Brendan Steele, Kicking Bradley, Uh, Jimmy Walker,
- 53:57Speaker 1: um a handful of guys who would sort of make
- 54:00Speaker 1: up this fosome and the stakes that still always had
- 54:04Speaker 1: were enough to keep you interested but not enough to
- 54:08Speaker 1: make you uncomfortable. And what it was, we all found out,
- 54:11Speaker 1: was basically a two thousand dollar bet with a one
- 54:14Speaker 1: time thousand dollar press and so the most who can
- 54:18Speaker 1: lose was three grand. And for these guys who are
- 54:20Speaker 1: playing for a million dollars on any given week, um
- 54:23Speaker 1: as still always put it, you should want to play
- 54:25Speaker 1: for that kind of money on a Tuesday because it
- 54:27Speaker 1: kind of gets you ready to play for a lot
- 54:29Speaker 1: more money later in the week. So um, you know,
- 54:31Speaker 1: I know that sounds like maybe a lot of money
- 54:33Speaker 1: to some people listening out there. If you're just playing
- 54:35Speaker 1: for a round of golf. These guys are obviously uh
- 54:37Speaker 1: wheeling and dealing for a whole lot more later that
- 54:39Speaker 1: week anyway. So uh so in any case that that
- 54:42Speaker 1: wouldn't play all the time, and you know the results
- 54:44Speaker 1: had always been back and forth. So this was two
- 54:46Speaker 1: years ago at the Players Championship. Uh Colt Nost and
- 54:50Speaker 1: Jamie Lovemark, who were not part of this regular game,
- 54:53Speaker 1: came up to Phil and said, hey, you know, we
- 54:55Speaker 1: don't know if you guys want some action on on Tuesday.
- 54:58Speaker 1: And so philter is the Brennan Steel and says, hey,
- 55:02Speaker 1: we got ourselves a couple of pigeons. Let's tell them
- 55:05Speaker 1: the game is a little more than we usually played
- 55:06Speaker 1: for us. So I think they played for uh four
- 55:09Speaker 1: and two instead of two and one, and they doubled
- 55:12Speaker 1: up on these guys. And and so they go out
- 55:14Speaker 1: and play, and through sixteen holes, Nos and love Mark
- 55:18Speaker 1: are one up on Michaelson and Steele and as they're
- 55:24Speaker 1: walking off the sixteenth grew I mean Phil for insta
- 55:26Speaker 1: Colt nose caddy and says Hey man, I'm really sorry,
- 55:30Speaker 1: and the caddy says, what do you mean, what are
- 55:32Speaker 1: you talking about? He said, Oh, we're gonna win the
- 55:35Speaker 1: next two holes, and your guy is gonna be moping
- 55:38Speaker 1: around here the rest of the week like he just
- 55:40Speaker 1: lost his dog. And caddy looks like he goes, okay,
- 55:43Speaker 1: feel whatever, keep talking. Well they have seventeen. The famous
- 55:46Speaker 1: Island Green still stiffed one too, about three ft on
- 55:50Speaker 1: seventeen makes the butt squares the match, and now they're
- 55:53Speaker 1: one up in the press and they pressed at that
- 55:54Speaker 1: point too. They get to eighteen, and I still telling
- 55:57Speaker 1: me the story. Uh hours after the match it ended.
- 56:00Speaker 1: He said, on eighteen, Uh, nose to the left, Mark,
- 56:03Speaker 1: get up there. They both hit it in the trees
- 56:05Speaker 1: on the right. Steely hits his in the right. I,
- 56:08Speaker 1: of course just hit mine right down the middle, because
- 56:10Speaker 1: that's what you're supposed to do the fairways down the middle.
- 56:12Speaker 1: So I figured I would just hit it in the fairway.
- 56:13Speaker 1: And it's still talking, and uh, very much in his
- 56:17Speaker 1: uh Phil sarcasm says, you know the fairways right there,
- 56:20Speaker 1: I'll hit in the fairway. So uh. Then Phil says,
- 56:22Speaker 1: you know, nose the short of the green and love
- 56:25Speaker 1: Mark doesn't get there, and uh he goes I'm about
- 56:28Speaker 1: to hit and all of a sudden, like a butterfly
- 56:31Speaker 1: coming out of the sky, I see this ball just
- 56:35Speaker 1: dropping so ever so slightly right onto the green, bounces
- 56:40Speaker 1: right towards the hole. It stops a foot from the hole.
- 56:43Speaker 1: It's my partner, Brendan Steele, who walks out of the woods.
- 56:46Speaker 1: I couldn't even see where he was. I think he
- 56:48Speaker 1: walked right across the water towards the green and and
- 56:52Speaker 1: just tapped in his butt. We win the match. I
- 56:55Speaker 1: walk off the green and I turned the colt nose caddy,
- 56:57Speaker 1: I said, I told you, and just walked right. That
- 57:03Speaker 1: is stone cold balls right there, isn't it that? Uh real?
- 57:10Speaker 1: I wish I had the skill to be able to
- 57:12Speaker 1: like make that claim and pull that off at the
- 57:16Speaker 1: same time. I don't think there's anything I could I
- 57:19Speaker 1: could make that bet out other than like correcting someone's grammar.
- 57:29Speaker 1: But you don't, you know, you know, Michelson and I
- 57:32Speaker 1: have in common both for both sun devils must be
- 57:37Speaker 1: in the blood over there in Arizona. There's nothing else
- 57:40Speaker 1: to do. It's so dry. All you can do is gamble,
- 57:45Speaker 1: listen boys. Uh, those were amazing, amazing story. Even though
- 57:49Speaker 1: Sobel totally faded out for for a few minutes there,
- 57:52Speaker 1: he came back strong. Um. Everybody should go into the
