A baby western lowland gorilla, named Usala — meaning “forest” in Kikumu and honoring a key conservation area — has made her debut at the Detroit Zoo, becoming the zoo’s second-ever gorilla birth in 98 years. Named through a public vote from over 1,300 participants, Usala joins her parents Tulivu and Mshindi, who arrived last year from Cincinnati as part of a vital breeding program.
