- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter two, Mastro Cherry gives the piece of wood to
- 0:04Speaker 1: his friend Geppetto, who takes it to make himself a
- 0:08Speaker 1: marionette that will dance fence and turn somersaults. In that
- 0:15Speaker 1: very instant, a loud knock sounded on the door. Come in,
- 0:19Speaker 1: said the carpenter, not having an atom of strength left
- 0:22Speaker 1: with which to stand up at the words. The door opened,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and a dapper little old man came in. His name
- 0:31Speaker 1: was Shippetto, but to the boys of the neighborhood he
- 0:35Speaker 1: was Polandina, on account of the wig he always wore,
- 0:39Speaker 1: which was just the color of yellow corn. Geppetto had
- 0:45Speaker 1: a very bad temper. Woe to the one who called
- 0:49Speaker 1: him Polandina. He became as wild as a beast, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: no one could soothe him. Good day, Mastro Antonio, said, Ghippetto,
- 0:59Speaker 1: what are you doing on the floor. I am teaching
- 1:02Speaker 1: the ants their A B. C's good luck to you.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What brought you here? Friend, geppetto my legs, and it
- 1:11Speaker 1: may flatter you to know, Mastro Antonio, that I have
- 1:14Speaker 1: come to beg for a favor. Here I am at
- 1:18Speaker 1: your service, answered the carpenter, raising himself on to his knees.
- 1:23Speaker 1: This morning, a fine idea came to me. Let's hear it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I thought of making myself a beautiful wooden marionette. It
- 1:32Speaker 1: must be wonderful one that will be able to dance
- 1:36Speaker 1: fence and turn somersaults with it. I intend to go
- 1:40Speaker 1: around the world to earn my crust of bread and
- 1:43Speaker 1: cup of wine. What do you think of it? Bravo Polandina,
- 1:48Speaker 1: cried the same tiny voice, which came from no one
- 1:51Speaker 1: knew where. On hearing himself called Polandina, Mastro Geppetto turned
- 1:58Speaker 1: the color of a red pepper, and, facing the carpenter,
- 2:01Speaker 1: said to him angrily, why do you insult me? Who
- 2:05Speaker 1: is insulting you? You called me pol Indina? I did not.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I suppose you think I did? Yet I know it
- 2:14Speaker 1: was you. No, yes, no yes. And growing angrier each moment,
- 2:21Speaker 1: they went from words to blows, and finally began to
- 2:24Speaker 1: scratch and bite and slap each other. When the fight
- 2:28Speaker 1: was over, Mastro Antonio had Gchiappetto's yellow wig in his hands,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and Geppetto found the carpenter's curly wig in his mouth.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Give me back my wig, shouted Mastro Antonio in a
- 2:41Speaker 1: surly voice, you return mine, and we'll be friends. The
- 2:46Speaker 1: two little old men, each with his own wig back
- 2:49Speaker 1: on his own head, shook hands and swore to be
- 2:52Speaker 1: friends for the rest of their lives. Well, then, Mastro Geppetto,
- 2:56Speaker 1: said the carpenter to show he bore him. No ill
- 3:00Speaker 1: will what is it you want? I want a piece
- 3:03Speaker 1: of wood to make a marionette? Will you give it
- 3:06Speaker 1: to me? Mastro Antonio, very glad indeed went immediately to
- 3:12Speaker 1: his bench to get the piece of wood which had
- 3:14Speaker 1: frightened him so much. But as he was about to
- 3:18Speaker 1: give it to his friend, with a violent jerk, it
- 3:21Speaker 1: slipped out of his hands and hit against poor Geppetto's
- 3:25Speaker 1: thin legs. Ah, is this the gentleway, Mastro Antonio, in
- 3:31Speaker 1: which you make your gifts? You have made me almost lame.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I swear to you I did not do it. It
- 3:39Speaker 1: was I. Of course, it is the fault of this
- 3:42Speaker 1: piece of wood. You're right, but remember you were the
- 3:46Speaker 1: one to throw it at my legs. I did not
- 3:49Speaker 1: throw it. Liar Geppetto, do not insult me, or I
- 3:54Speaker 1: shall call you Polandina idiot, Polandina donkey, Polandina ugly monkey. Polandina.
- 4:03Speaker 1: On hearing himself called Polandina for the third time, Geppetto
- 4:07Speaker 1: lost his head with rage and threw himself upon the carpenter.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Then and there they gave each other a sound thrashing.
- 4:17Speaker 1: After this fight, Mastro Antonio had two more scratches on
- 4:21Speaker 1: his nose, and Geppetto had two buttons missing from his coat. Thus,
- 4:26Speaker 1: having settled their accounts, they shook hands and swore to
- 4:29Speaker 1: be good friends for the rest of their lives. Then
- 4:33Speaker 1: Geppetto took the fine piece of wood, thanked Mastro Antonio,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and limped away towards home. End of chapter two.
