- 1:00Speaker: master of the Patriot Lodge,
- 1:01Speaker: number nineteen fifty seven in
- 1:03Speaker: Fairfax, Virginia.
- 1:05Speaker: We've got the whole deck stacked tonight.
- 1:07Speaker: We've got, uh, we have a Robert Johnson sighting.
- 1:11Speaker: Let's, uh, say hi to Robert.
- 1:13Speaker: How's it going?
- 1:14Speaker: It's going wonderfully.
- 1:15Speaker: Uh, Robert Johnson here past
- 1:17Speaker: Master Waukegan and, uh, seventy
- 1:19Speaker: eight and Space Nova eleven
- 1:21Speaker: eighty three.
- 1:23Speaker: Uh, yeah.
- 1:24Speaker: Uh, just hanging out.
- 1:26Speaker: Good old me.
- 1:27Speaker: Secretary of stuff.
- 1:28Speaker: Uh, editor in chief at the Lyceum.
- 1:30Speaker: Who?
- 1:34Speaker: Great.
- 1:35Speaker: Great publication.
- 1:36Speaker: Thanks.
- 1:37Speaker: Have a Jason Richards spotting.
- 1:39Speaker: Hello and good evening.
- 1:41Speaker: Hi. Jason Richards stuffing things.
- 1:45Speaker: I'm a past master, a rough.
- 1:50Speaker: Yay!
- 1:51Speaker: I didn't get a harrumph out of that guy.
- 1:53Speaker: You watch your ass.
- 1:58Speaker: Speaking of ass.
- 2:02Speaker: Joe, you know me, Joe Martinez.
- 2:04Speaker: Uh, let's see.
- 2:05Speaker: Past master of Manasseh Lodge
- 2:06Speaker: number one eighty two in
- 2:08Speaker: Manassas, Virginia.
- 2:09Speaker: And, uh, I am, uh, mobile in the
- 2:12Speaker: lovely Kansas City area this
- 2:14Speaker: week.
- 2:14Speaker: So good to be with y'all.
- 2:17Speaker: Awesome.
- 2:18Speaker: The internet connection looks
- 2:19Speaker: very good outside of the blue
- 2:22Speaker: laser eyes coming out of your
- 2:23Speaker: glasses.
- 2:24Speaker: I know it's my glasses, but then I can't see you guys.
- 2:27Speaker: I'm getting old Gen X in in post right after you say laser eyes.
- 2:33Speaker: I'm going to put like an epic.
- 2:35Speaker: Bram would be cool, I apologize.
- 2:42Speaker: Um, if you want to support the
- 2:44Speaker: show, head over to patreon dot
- 2:45Speaker: com slash the Masonic
- 2:46Speaker: Roundtable.
- 2:48Speaker: That is where, um, you keep the
- 2:50Speaker: show going for many, many years
- 2:52Speaker: or twenty forty, whichever
- 2:54Speaker: happens first and keep us all in
- 2:57Speaker: brand new bifocals every two to
- 2:58Speaker: three years.
- 2:59Speaker: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker: We appreciate your support.
- 3:01Speaker: LensCrafters not a sponsor.
- 3:03Speaker: Warby Parker, not a sponsor.
- 3:07Speaker: Awesome.
- 3:08Speaker: And then we transition over to
- 3:11Speaker: the other favorite part of the
- 3:13Speaker: show.
- 3:14Speaker: You know it as.
- 3:18Speaker: Tarot card of the week.
- 3:28Speaker: Wayne's world.
- 3:31Speaker: It's literally every week I just
- 3:33Speaker: I'm waiting for like Joe to
- 3:36Speaker: like, slide in with a Conan
- 3:37Speaker: O'Brien wig.
- 3:39Speaker: Oh, I'll make that happen.
- 3:44Speaker: We can do something with AI and fix that.
- 3:46Speaker: All right.
- 3:47Speaker: Let's talk about tarot card of the week.
- 3:50Speaker: Jason was showing me in the
- 3:51Speaker: green room a fancy deck he's
- 3:53Speaker: acquired.
- 3:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker: So you know how masonry is not
- 4:00Speaker: appealing to some of the younger
- 4:03Speaker: generation.
- 4:04Speaker: And we're trying to make masonry more hip.
- 4:07Speaker: And so I figured it was a
- 4:09Speaker: language barrier and a
- 4:10Speaker: communication problem.
- 4:12Speaker: And so in my recent outing to Seattle, I picked up the Gen Z
- 4:19Speaker: tarot, a deck and guidebook for your healing era.
- 4:24Speaker: It hits different.
- 4:26Speaker: It's got big aura.
- 4:29Speaker: That's pretty slick.
- 4:30Speaker: Pretty slick.
- 4:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker: No cap.
- 4:34Speaker: Jesus.
- 4:37Speaker: I'm glad I made this stiff.
- 4:41Speaker: Oh, boy.
- 4:41Speaker: What do we got?
- 4:42Speaker: He's laughing.
- 4:43Speaker: We have the seven of mood.
- 4:47Speaker: The seven of cups, which is the situation ship.
- 4:52Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 4:53Speaker: Oh, dang.
- 4:56Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker: Is that a hydro jug?
- 5:00Speaker: Is that little.
- 5:01Speaker: Yeah, it's it's a Stanley.
- 5:03Speaker: It's a little Stanley.
- 5:05Speaker: Yeah, I like it.
- 5:07Speaker: That is, I know, I know people with that that card.
- 5:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker: I wonder how that.
- 5:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker: I guess it does kind of equate
- 5:17Speaker: to I mean it could equate to a
- 5:18Speaker: situationship, right?
- 5:19Speaker: Like opportunities and alignment values and things.
- 5:22Speaker: And you're kind of just hanging out, going for the ride.
- 5:27Speaker: Uh, let's see where this goes.
- 5:28Speaker: Dreamland.
- 5:29Speaker: Imagination possibilities.
- 5:33Speaker: Wishful thinking, wishful thinking.
- 5:36Speaker: I dig it.
- 5:37Speaker: Yeah, that's really cool.
- 5:39Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker: We could use some wishful
- 5:41Speaker: thinking as we think about
- 5:43Speaker: tonight's topic.
- 5:44Speaker: Ooh.
- 5:46Speaker: Untitled.
- 5:47Speaker: Right here, right now.
- 5:48Speaker: But specifically clear Pepsi.
- 5:51Speaker: Mhm.
- 5:52Speaker: What can we do?
- 5:54Speaker: Uh, today.
- 5:56Speaker: Oh, nice.
- 5:58Speaker: What is that one say?
- 6:00Speaker: Gigachad.
- 6:01Speaker: The emperor.
- 6:03Speaker: Ah. That's good.
- 6:05Speaker: Anyway, you should be mewing.
- 6:07Speaker: Wonderful.
- 6:08Speaker: Mew mew, mew.
- 6:10Speaker: All right.
- 6:11Speaker: Joe.
- 6:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker: This was your great idea, so.
- 6:14Speaker: Well, it was actually Robert's,
- 6:15Speaker: but I. I latched on to it pretty
- 6:17Speaker: hard.
- 6:17Speaker: Yes.
- 6:17Speaker: You did.
- 6:18Speaker: Um, because it resonates with me so much because tonight we're
- 6:22Speaker: going to put aside all the tradition and we're going to put
- 6:25Speaker: aside all the platitudes.
- 6:27Speaker: And we're tonight we're going to talk about my favorite saying in
- 6:31Speaker: masonry being the change you want to see in the world.
- 6:36Speaker: Yes.
- 6:38Speaker: So everybody leaves a Masonic meeting or leaves a Masonic
- 6:43Speaker: event with, you know, hey, we should have done this better.
- 6:45Speaker: Or, hey, we ought to do this.
- 6:47Speaker: And, uh, you know, I think this term was originally associated
- 6:50Speaker: with Gandhi, although I don't think it's factual, but being
- 6:52Speaker: the change you wish to see.
- 6:54Speaker: Um, and whether or not he said it is not important.
- 6:57Speaker: Um, every one of us who are Masons always hope and wish and
- 7:03Speaker: pray for a better lodge or a better lodge experience.
- 7:07Speaker: Um, and it's easy to wait for someone else to make it happen
- 7:11Speaker: or we, we put all our eggs in the basket of waiting for
- 7:13Speaker: someone to be that change.
- 7:16Speaker: Um, spoiler alert you are all
- 7:19Speaker: the change and you are all the
- 7:21Speaker: ones that are there to promote
- 7:22Speaker: that change that you want to
- 7:24Speaker: see.
- 7:25Speaker: Um, every lodge that we consider
- 7:27Speaker: great is the result of lots of
- 7:30Speaker: brothers deciding to make one
- 7:32Speaker: small improvement instead of
- 7:33Speaker: waiting for someone else to do
- 7:34Speaker: it.
- 7:35Speaker: So tonight that's what we're going to talk about.
- 7:37Speaker: We're going to talk about ways
- 7:38Speaker: to improve our lodge that
- 7:39Speaker: doesn't require miracles, that
- 7:41Speaker: doesn't require, um, injecting,
- 7:43Speaker: you know, seven figures of cash
- 7:45Speaker: into your lodge or convincing
- 7:46Speaker: every past master to agree on
- 7:48Speaker: one thing.
- 7:49Speaker: Um, Most of what makes a large grade doesn't require things
- 7:54Speaker: like bylaws forming committees that just ramble on endlessly,
- 7:57Speaker: or waiting for next year's master to take over.
- 8:01Speaker: Right.
- 8:01Speaker: So small improvements, things
- 8:03Speaker: that you can do today is going
- 8:05Speaker: to be the topic of our
- 8:06Speaker: discussion tonight.
- 8:07Speaker: Yeah, I was going to elaborate
- 8:09Speaker: on that because, um, a lot of
- 8:11Speaker: issues we talk about are
- 8:13Speaker: systemic issues, leadership
- 8:16Speaker: issues, uh, strategy things,
- 8:19Speaker: right.
- 8:20Speaker: Twenty forty.
- 8:20Speaker: Right.
- 8:21Speaker: And that's some of that seems either untenable or just so far
- 8:26Speaker: out, so big.
- 8:27Speaker: Like, what can I as one brother do to fix things?
- 8:31Speaker: That's an issue in the world, right?
- 8:32Speaker: If you make a problem too big, it's never going to get solved.
- 8:34Speaker: Right?
- 8:35Speaker: And that that is a, that is a problem of the human condition,
- 8:38Speaker: not just in masonry.
- 8:39Speaker: So, um, let's talk about those little tactical wins that can
- 8:43Speaker: make things better.
- 8:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker: Well snackable.
- 8:48Speaker: All right.
- 8:48Speaker: So, um, I guess we can kind of do this as a round robin.
- 8:52Speaker: Those are always fun.
- 8:53Speaker: And so we'll just go and fire off the first thing that comes
- 8:57Speaker: to mind and have a little discussion and move on.
- 9:01Speaker: So these are all things you could do.
- 9:02Speaker: And I'm advocating that you pick things that require like zero to
- 9:08Speaker: very minimal preparation, right?
- 9:10Speaker: Or very little effort.
- 9:11Speaker: You're going to say effort.
- 9:13Speaker: Oh, and there it is.
- 9:14Speaker: Okay.
- 9:14Speaker: Or effort, effort, effort needed.
- 9:19Speaker: Want to make this as easy as possible.
- 9:21Speaker: So let's start with spin the wheel.
- 9:24Speaker: Joe Martinez oh, crap.
- 9:26Speaker: Okay.
- 9:26Speaker: Um, my, my, my suggestion is being the change you want to see
- 9:30Speaker: in the world.
- 9:31Speaker: No it's not um, I, oh yes.
- 9:34Speaker: Add that to the bingo card.
- 9:36Speaker: Um, yeah, my quick suggestion is
- 9:41Speaker: decide to take ten minutes of
- 9:42Speaker: every meeting and make it worth
- 9:44Speaker: attending.
- 9:45Speaker: So add a ten minute education program.
- 9:48Speaker: Share an interesting piece of Masonic history.
- 9:51Speaker: Having an invite.
- 9:52Speaker: An open discussion in your lodge, you know.
- 9:54Speaker: Pick a topic and discuss it.
- 9:55Speaker: Have people stand up and
- 9:57Speaker: basically take the focus away
- 9:58Speaker: from the business portion of the
- 10:00Speaker: meeting.
- 10:01Speaker: Um, because that's what ninety percent of a meeting is, right?
- 10:03Speaker: And it's boring.
- 10:04Speaker: People don't like it.
- 10:05Speaker: They don't come, they don't want to hear the minutes.
- 10:07Speaker: People don't join a fraternity to hear the minutes and listen
- 10:10Speaker: to arguing about the bill.
- 10:11Speaker: So if you can't make an entire
- 10:13Speaker: meeting memorable and value
- 10:15Speaker: added, just pick ten minutes in
- 10:16Speaker: it.
- 10:17Speaker: And it doesn't require much.
- 10:18Speaker: You know, it requires one person or a suggestion or doling out
- 10:22Speaker: assignments like, hey, this month, John's going to talk
- 10:24Speaker: about this next month.
- 10:25Speaker: Robert's going to talk about that.
- 10:26Speaker: Take ten minutes and see how it goes.
- 10:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker: You know, your brothers, if
- 10:30Speaker: they're digging it, they'll ask
- 10:32Speaker: for more because now it's
- 10:33Speaker: available.
- 10:34Speaker: Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker: My mother in law used to do they
- 10:35Speaker: call them three, five or seven
- 10:37Speaker: minute talks.
- 10:39Speaker: That's all it takes.
- 10:40Speaker: I love it.
- 10:41Speaker: All right.
- 10:42Speaker: Jason, what would you do to be the change?
- 10:47Speaker: Um, I would make sure that I
- 10:51Speaker: introduce myself to someone I
- 10:53Speaker: didn't know.
- 10:55Speaker: Every single meeting.
- 10:56Speaker: Like you might have candidates.
- 10:58Speaker: You might have brothers visiting from other lodges.
- 11:01Speaker: Um, just pick somebody you don't know.
- 11:05Speaker: Um, take five minutes, establish that connection.
- 11:12Speaker: Can we pull the thread on that a little bit?
- 11:13Speaker: Um, pulling.
- 11:15Speaker: Yes, I would love to see and I, and I see Jason do this.
- 11:19Speaker: Um, and this is why I bring it up.
- 11:22Speaker: Break out from those cliques
- 11:23Speaker: that you have in your lodges,
- 11:24Speaker: right?
- 11:24Speaker: Like, you know, people come to dinner at lodge and they sit
- 11:27Speaker: with the same three or four people every single month.
- 11:29Speaker: Nobody knew who gets to sit at that table.
- 11:31Speaker: Like, break up those clicks, sit with someone new, sit with
- 11:34Speaker: someone you haven't the lodge black sheep like I just.
- 11:38Speaker: But you do.
- 11:38Speaker: Every month I see you sitting at a different table, you know?
- 11:41Speaker: And I'm like, yeah, absolutely.
- 11:44Speaker: He's putting the time in too, because he gives a crap and
- 11:48Speaker: wants to meet someone new.
- 11:49Speaker: You know, how often of us do we do that?
- 11:51Speaker: We don't.
- 11:51Speaker: That's why there's clicks and lodges, because it's the same
- 11:53Speaker: three or four old dudes that sit with each other every month for
- 11:56Speaker: twenty years, and they probably don't know all the people in
- 11:59Speaker: that room, you know?
- 12:02Speaker: So I love it.
- 12:04Speaker: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker: So I, I will say over the past couple months, that has been
- 12:10Speaker: because I've just kind of wanted to be by myself and people, you
- 12:14Speaker: know, gravitate toward me.
- 12:16Speaker: Um, but like, we can, we can
- 12:20Speaker: keep the facade of, uh, of I'm
- 12:24Speaker: reaching.
- 12:25Speaker: Let me rephrase what you said.
- 12:26Speaker: What Jason is saying is he's being the change in real time.
- 12:30Speaker: So yeah, good job buddy.
- 12:35Speaker: Nice.
- 12:36Speaker: Robert.
- 12:38Speaker: Oh, man.
- 12:40Speaker: Uh, so many great answers so far.
- 12:42Speaker: Um, I think I love I love the idea of, you know, putting
- 12:45Speaker: yourself out there.
- 12:47Speaker: You're tackling two birds really with a stone.
- 12:50Speaker: Um, I think.
- 12:53Speaker: A lot of like, I want to say things like hold a, like an open
- 12:57Speaker: debate night or something where you guys can sit at a table and
- 13:00Speaker: throw a question out, but I'm not sure that that always works.
- 13:04Speaker: Like it would work at SpaceX, but it wouldn't necessarily work
- 13:08Speaker: at Waukegan with everyone.
- 13:11Speaker: Like I know my past.
- 13:12Speaker: My younger dudes would be all into it, but it would take some
- 13:16Speaker: work to try to, to get our, uh, our older guys in because I feel
- 13:21Speaker: like they don't always think we value their opinion or like.
- 13:26Speaker: MM. Like, I mean, for instance, depends on the opinion.
- 13:30Speaker: That's true, that's true.
- 13:32Speaker: But if you got it in a way that sort of keeps it away from, from
- 13:38Speaker: anything that, you know, we could construe as, um, inciting
- 13:43Speaker: any sort of emotional feelings outside of good ones.
- 13:47Speaker: Um, so if you do decide to do this, you call it like a no rank
- 13:51Speaker: open table night.
- 13:53Speaker: And what you'll do is you sort
- 13:55Speaker: of pick some non-dogmatic
- 13:57Speaker: questions.
- 13:59Speaker: No, it doesn't really matter what they are, but like you
- 14:02Speaker: could put them out there.
- 14:03Speaker: And even if you have guys sitting at different tables, you
- 14:07Speaker: know, maybe one of your more enthusiastic guys, or if you
- 14:12Speaker: have somebody who wants to be more enthusiastic, but he's
- 14:15Speaker: trying to build up a little bit of, uh, confidence, you can have
- 14:20Speaker: him kind of be the, uh, the interlocutor here, right?
- 14:22Speaker: He can ask these questions like,
- 14:25Speaker: uh, what is true leadership look
- 14:26Speaker: like?
- 14:26Speaker: Or just kind of interesting questions.
- 14:30Speaker: And I think what you're going to get is not necessarily people
- 14:33Speaker: who go, oh, servant leadership.
- 14:35Speaker: And then next, if you push some
- 14:38Speaker: of these older guys, um,
- 14:41Speaker: seasoned masons and seasoned
- 14:44Speaker: living people.
- 14:46Speaker: You will get stories and those
- 14:49Speaker: stories are usually pretty darn
- 14:51Speaker: epic.
- 14:52Speaker: Um, I remember I've heard some bad ones, but sure, sure.
- 14:58Speaker: Uh, like we, we sat in lodge, uh, the guy was in our, he's in
- 15:02Speaker: all of our York right stuff.
- 15:03Speaker: He's always at our lodge meetings.
- 15:06Speaker: His name is Hardy.
- 15:07Speaker: Hardy Evans.
- 15:09Speaker: He was even on the Travel Channel once because he built a
- 15:12Speaker: huge log cabin motorhome.
- 15:14Speaker: Okay.
- 15:15Speaker: So this guy is super interesting.
- 15:17Speaker: Nobody knew anything about this guy's real life, right?
- 15:20Speaker: They just know he's an awesome brother.
- 15:22Speaker: He's always there, like the usual stuff.
- 15:25Speaker: I asked him some questions that are real easy.
- 15:27Speaker: Like, what did you do before you retired?
- 15:30Speaker: Nobody knew he'd been coming to lodge like forty years.
- 15:34Speaker: And so then he's like, oh yeah, this one time we were working
- 15:38Speaker: outside and a lightning bolt came down and it knocked all of
- 15:42Speaker: us out of our boots, literally.
- 15:44Speaker: And I was like, oh my God, we almost lost.
- 15:48Speaker: Hardy Evans, you know, this was the coolest story.
- 15:52Speaker: Uh, and you, you don't get that, that kind of thing.
- 15:55Speaker: If you're not willing to let
- 15:58Speaker: them know that like it, it
- 15:59Speaker: matters.
- 15:59Speaker: It value you have a genuine interest.
- 16:02Speaker: So just some things like that.
- 16:04Speaker: I feel like to start, start it up right.
- 16:07Speaker: Uh, in the dining hall even before the meeting.
- 16:10Speaker: Very easy to do.
- 16:10Speaker: Yep.
- 16:11Speaker: And ask those open ended questions.
- 16:13Speaker: I'm a huge fan of Socratic questioning.
- 16:16Speaker: Don't just say, you know, what's your favorite degree?
- 16:20Speaker: Fellowcraft degree.
- 16:21Speaker: Like, okay.
- 16:22Speaker: You ask like, you know, what
- 16:25Speaker: are, what do you take out of
- 16:26Speaker: masonry back into the real
- 16:27Speaker: world, right?
- 16:27Speaker: You don't ask a question that
- 16:29Speaker: has just a yes or no answer or a
- 16:31Speaker: absolutely.
- 16:33Speaker: Mhm.
- 16:33Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker: All right.
- 16:36Speaker: So mine is maybe a little unorthodox, but it is servant
- 16:42Speaker: leadership, which is pick something up like, you don't
- 16:46Speaker: have to be the steward.
- 16:47Speaker: You don't even have to be a
- 16:48Speaker: member of that lodge when you're
- 16:50Speaker: visiting.
- 16:50Speaker: Like, hey, if you see something, a chair needs to be pushed in,
- 16:53Speaker: you know, you need a, some trash that that just missed the
- 16:56Speaker: container all the way up to, hey, offering to help out to
- 17:00Speaker: help the stewards.
- 17:01Speaker: Like, hey, do you need an extra hand in the kitchen?
- 17:04Speaker: Like, how amazing is that?
- 17:05Speaker: Uh, to just be some simple not, you know, we're not, we're not
- 17:11Speaker: saying, you know, go off and, uh, you know, wash the, the side
- 17:15Speaker: of the temple, but like just little basic things that you
- 17:18Speaker: could do while you're there right before the meeting.
- 17:21Speaker: Uh, that makes things just a
- 17:22Speaker: little bit, a little bit tidier
- 17:23Speaker: and feel like you're
- 17:25Speaker: contributing.
- 17:27Speaker: Easy peasy.
- 17:28Speaker: Anyone can do that.
- 17:30Speaker: Lemon squeezy.
- 17:31Speaker: Well, real quick, just to say, when you got a clean lodge, that
- 17:38Speaker: is a value proposition.
- 17:40Speaker: I mean, that's value prop, right?
- 17:41Speaker: Like you don't want to go into a
- 17:43Speaker: dirty, nasty, stinky lodge or
- 17:45Speaker: the lodge where you go into the
- 17:46Speaker: bathroom.
- 17:47Speaker: And yeah, they got like either
- 17:49Speaker: OS people or, or the, the kid
- 17:52Speaker: groups are coming and cleaning
- 17:53Speaker: the lodge, but they're still
- 17:54Speaker: dead flies and bees on every
- 17:56Speaker: windowsill.
- 17:57Speaker: Like.
- 17:58Speaker: Mhm.
- 17:58Speaker: No. Take some time.
- 18:00Speaker: Clean that off.
- 18:02Speaker: Nobody wants to go into a bathroom where the the dividers
- 18:07Speaker: for the urinals are like caked in piss rust.
- 18:10Speaker: It just takes you.
- 18:11Speaker: Yeah, like one minute to do.
- 18:12Speaker: Come on.
- 18:13Speaker: Okay.
- 18:14Speaker: And I think that's a huge one.
- 18:16Speaker: You get those, uh, tape traps with all the flies.
- 18:19Speaker: The flies walk through them.
- 18:22Speaker: It's like, just.
- 18:23Speaker: You just don't hang those by the urinal.
- 18:25Speaker: It's always the best when those are hanging in the kitchen.
- 18:27Speaker: Those are my favorite.
- 18:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker: Yeah, totally.
- 18:30Speaker: Don't.
- 18:30Speaker: Don't hang those too low by the urinals.
- 18:32Speaker: Yes.
- 18:32Speaker: That's the thing to avoid.
- 18:35Speaker: Back to Joe.
- 18:36Speaker: Yes.
- 18:37Speaker: Um, here's an easy one.
- 18:39Speaker: Um, and I see some lodges do it
- 18:41Speaker: and some don't, but I think
- 18:42Speaker: everyone should have a pack of
- 18:45Speaker: greeters at your door at every
- 18:47Speaker: meeting.
- 18:47Speaker: Just have a bunch of people who
- 18:49Speaker: like you can even make it a
- 18:51Speaker: gauntlet.
- 18:51Speaker: Like make sure welcome to Walmart.
- 18:54Speaker: Yes, every person that comes in gets greeted by five or six
- 18:56Speaker: people, and you ask their name and you repeat their name and
- 19:00Speaker: you know, oh, hey brother Jason, great to see you, brother Jason.
- 19:03Speaker: Always a pleasure to have you here.
- 19:05Speaker: Better to be seen than viewed, Joe.
- 19:07Speaker: Indeed.
- 19:08Speaker: Make people feel overly welcome
- 19:11Speaker: that they took the time out to
- 19:13Speaker: come tonight.
- 19:13Speaker: You spelled that wrong, you dum dum.
- 19:16Speaker: So, yes, I typed too fast.
- 19:20Speaker: Um, but yeah, have an onslaught
- 19:22Speaker: of greeters at your door every
- 19:23Speaker: single time.
- 19:25Speaker: He did that intentionally to avoid copyright infringement.
- 19:29Speaker: No, he did not.
- 19:31Speaker: Not a sponsor.
- 19:32Speaker: That's a great idea, Joe.
- 19:34Speaker: Uh, many years ago.
- 19:37Speaker: Uh, so it was a guy named Eric
- 19:40Speaker: who took the East and right
- 19:42Speaker: after me, and then after him was
- 19:44Speaker: a guy.
- 19:45Speaker: Corey, uh, uh, Carlos and Corey
- 19:49Speaker: and then Ben, that line like
- 19:51Speaker: this for years, we everybody
- 19:54Speaker: enters through the back of the
- 19:56Speaker: lodge.
- 19:57Speaker: No, and we don't like our front is right on Main Street.
- 20:00Speaker: Nobody walks in through that door.
- 20:02Speaker: So we would make it a point for like those three or four years.
- 20:05Speaker: We all just even though we came
- 20:07Speaker: in the back way, we all kicked
- 20:10Speaker: that door open and just hung
- 20:11Speaker: outside.
- 20:12Speaker: And those guys would do their
- 20:13Speaker: cigars right out there, right on
- 20:14Speaker: the thing.
- 20:14Speaker: We were in suits.
- 20:16Speaker: It was public awareness.
- 20:18Speaker: And yeah, when guys started coming into the front door, it
- 20:23Speaker: was it's awesome.
- 20:24Speaker: They just it feels cool.
- 20:25Speaker: It's like when you're at Scottish Rite, right?
- 20:27Speaker: And all the candidates are coming out and everybody's
- 20:29Speaker: clapping or, you know, meeting everybody, it's it's nice.
- 20:32Speaker: I don't know what you're talking about there.
- 20:34Speaker: Well that's okay.
- 20:35Speaker: Yeah, you will one day.
- 20:40Speaker: Awesome.
- 20:41Speaker: Okay, so we got Joe back to Jason.
- 20:45Speaker: Um. Do a quick sweep of the lodge room after a meeting.
- 20:54Speaker: Like, just look for water bottles that were brought in
- 21:01Speaker: that, uh, that were left, like, um, you know, make sure the
- 21:07Speaker: candy dish has been refilled.
- 21:10Speaker: Those little butterscotch
- 21:12Speaker: candies with the extra loud
- 21:14Speaker: cellophane.
- 21:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:16Speaker: Crinkles.
- 21:16Speaker: Um, you know, just again, quick sweep and just make sure the
- 21:23Speaker: place is, is tidy.
- 21:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:26Speaker: Your stewards are going to thank you for that.
- 21:28Speaker: Um, a brother I know I've left
- 21:30Speaker: so many things back in lodge, I
- 21:31Speaker: had to go back and get um, and
- 21:35Speaker: yeah, it just sets the pace for
- 21:36Speaker: the next, the next time the
- 21:37Speaker: lodge opens.
- 21:38Speaker: Mhm.
- 21:39Speaker: Easy peasy.
- 21:42Speaker: Cool.
- 21:43Speaker: Robert, over to you.
- 21:46Speaker: I think they're super lame.
- 21:49Speaker: Um, but the idea like lunch and learns, you know what I mean?
- 21:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:54Speaker: Um, especially in Masonic context, like if they go, oh,
- 21:57Speaker: we're having a, we're going to do a, a lodge, uh, lunch and
- 22:01Speaker: learn at the Scottish Rite on a Saturday, like, okay, great.
- 22:05Speaker: And they're going to talk about something that I don't care
- 22:07Speaker: about, like retirement planning.
- 22:09Speaker: Um, even though I should, even though I should.
- 22:11Speaker: Right.
- 22:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker: Um, but I think that topic, just not a Masonic topic hashtag, not
- 22:16Speaker: Masonic education, right.
- 22:19Speaker: So I'm thinking it might not have to like almost everything
- 22:24Speaker: can be tied back to some sort of Masonic education, but there are
- 22:29Speaker: a ton of things that I find interesting that I recognize.
- 22:34Speaker: Brothers in my lodge are subject matter experts on, and if they
- 22:40Speaker: could share a little bit of that, whatever their expertise
- 22:44Speaker: is with the Lodge and like, say ten minutes, right?
- 22:46Speaker: So like, what if they could do aside from Masonic education,
- 22:50Speaker: you give a little bit of a added value, you know, on the thing.
- 22:53Speaker: It's like, hey, the education for tonight is this.
- 22:56Speaker: And by the way, we're going to have a ten minute masterclass by
- 23:00Speaker: John Ruark, who's going to talk about basic home cybersecurity
- 23:05Speaker: that everyone should use.
- 23:07Speaker: Or, um, maybe Scott Duvall
- 23:10Speaker: stands up and he's like, hey,
- 23:11Speaker: here's how to smoke the perfect
- 23:12Speaker: brisket.
- 23:13Speaker: Um, just anything that I'm like,
- 23:17Speaker: hey, here's how to prompt
- 23:19Speaker: engineer your ideal AI
- 23:21Speaker: girlfriend.
- 23:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker: Exactly.
- 23:26Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:26Speaker: Just a little bit of, um, Like
- 23:30Speaker: real world coming into, into
- 23:33Speaker: masonry.
- 23:34Speaker: Um, it's not exactly like a lunch and learn, but it's, it's
- 23:39Speaker: kind of cool because then you have brothers who came to lodge,
- 23:42Speaker: learned some Masonic education, learned a little bit about their
- 23:44Speaker: guys, and also left with some, some, uh, practical, real world
- 23:49Speaker: skills they can use tomorrow.
- 23:54Speaker: Nice.
- 23:55Speaker: I like it.
- 23:57Speaker: Uh, I guess it's back to me.
- 23:58Speaker: So here's one that's interesting.
- 24:00Speaker: Be the guy who remembers member milestones, whether it be
- 24:09Speaker: Masonic birthdays or their actual birthdays, right?
- 24:14Speaker: Or how many years they've been a member.
- 24:16Speaker: Little things like that go a
- 24:18Speaker: long way to, you know, uplifting
- 24:22Speaker: the craft.
- 24:22Speaker: And you could be the guy.
- 24:24Speaker: It's not hard.
- 24:25Speaker: Just hit up the secretary and say, hey, can you give me a
- 24:27Speaker: printout Of all the members, and then I'll keep that up to date
- 24:33Speaker: and be that guy.
- 24:34Speaker: So every time you meet.
- 24:35Speaker: All right.
- 24:35Speaker: Here's here's Robert with the member milestones.
- 24:39Speaker: Take it away.
- 24:41Speaker: So what you're saying is be the
- 24:43Speaker: guy who collects PII on all
- 24:47Speaker: Social Security numbers, credit
- 24:48Speaker: card numbers, mother's maiden
- 24:50Speaker: name.
- 24:50Speaker: What am I missing?
- 24:51Speaker: Okay.
- 24:52Speaker: Routing number.
- 24:53Speaker: Okay.
- 24:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker: Oh, yeah.
- 24:56Speaker: Everybody uses checks in masonry.
- 24:58Speaker: That's true.
- 25:01Speaker: Like, the only thing we use checks for.
- 25:05Speaker: I mean, really, this is how you.
- 25:07Speaker: This is how you catfish masons.
- 25:09Speaker: Just ask for a routing number like Joe.
- 25:11Speaker: Well, actually, cash on delivery.
- 25:16Speaker: Yes.
- 25:17Speaker: Delivery.
- 25:18Speaker: Uh, yeah.
- 25:19Speaker: Is the only other thing.
- 25:21Speaker: Maybe.
- 25:22Speaker: Do people still do cash?
- 25:23Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:24Speaker: They do.
- 25:24Speaker: They do?
- 25:25Speaker: Yes.
- 25:25Speaker: Only works if you're catfishing
- 25:27Speaker: someone you know across the
- 25:29Speaker: pond?
- 25:30Speaker: No, we don't like that.
- 25:34Speaker: Yes, yes.
- 25:35Speaker: Do not do that.
- 25:36Speaker: That would be all right, Joe.
- 25:37Speaker: What's another one?
- 25:38Speaker: Yep, I got some.
- 25:39Speaker: I got some do nots or nevers.
- 25:41Speaker: Um. So two.
- 25:43Speaker: Never let a brother eat alone at dinner and never let a visitor
- 25:50Speaker: sit alone in lodge.
- 25:52Speaker: Never.
- 25:53Speaker: So if you got a visitor, someone coming from somewhere else or
- 25:57Speaker: you got a brother, you do not let them sit alone.
- 26:00Speaker: I don't care if you know them.
- 26:01Speaker: If this is the first time you're
- 26:02Speaker: meeting them, you engage with
- 26:04Speaker: them and you make sure that they
- 26:05Speaker: feel welcome and you make sure
- 26:07Speaker: that they feel like they're
- 26:08Speaker: participating.
- 26:09Speaker: So you never let visitors sit alone.
- 26:11Speaker: Question.
- 26:12Speaker: Go. We're all pretty well traveled.
- 26:14Speaker: Um, have you ever visited a
- 26:17Speaker: lodge and had that exact
- 26:18Speaker: experience where, like, no one
- 26:21Speaker: came up and said, hi, you just
- 26:22Speaker: kind of found your little spot
- 26:23Speaker: in the in the pew, and That was
- 26:27Speaker: it.
- 26:27Speaker: I got a real zinger.
- 26:28Speaker: Um, so I, I'm not going to name
- 26:30Speaker: names of places and people and
- 26:32Speaker: things.
- 26:32Speaker: Um, but I was raised in a lodge in Maryland, uh, way back in two
- 26:36Speaker: thousand and five.
- 26:38Speaker: And, uh, I had gone back and I
- 26:41Speaker: moved to Virginia two years
- 26:43Speaker: later.
- 26:43Speaker: So I hadn't been back for a while.
- 26:46Speaker: Uh, I went back on my tenth Masonic anniversary.
- 26:50Speaker: Um, because in Maryland, they give you like a little
- 26:52Speaker: certificate or whatnot.
- 26:54Speaker: Um, so I got the email.
- 26:55Speaker: I was like, hey.
- 26:56Speaker: And for me, it was like a two and a half hour drive.
- 26:58Speaker: So I went, went back to my lodge.
- 27:01Speaker: Um, I didn't know.
- 27:03Speaker: I knew very few people there because it had been ten years.
- 27:06Speaker: Um, but I introduced myself.
- 27:09Speaker: I even wore my old lodge name
- 27:11Speaker: badge so they would know I was a
- 27:12Speaker: member there.
- 27:13Speaker: And I sat alone at dinner the entire night.
- 27:17Speaker: And I also sat by myself in the lodge room for the entire night.
- 27:21Speaker: And I walked away.
- 27:22Speaker: They gave me my certificate, um, didn't know who I was, and I
- 27:25Speaker: decided then that I would never go back to that lodge again.
- 27:30Speaker: I don't know if I've heard that
- 27:31Speaker: story before, so that's
- 27:32Speaker: fascinating.
- 27:33Speaker: And I admitted the next month.
- 27:35Speaker: So yeah, but that was a bummer.
- 27:38Speaker: Five hours of driving and no one came and talked to me.
- 27:44Speaker: You should have been the change.
- 27:46Speaker: I was not enough of the change that night.
- 27:49Speaker: And I've learned that now, so.
- 27:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker: Wow.
- 27:54Speaker: These are good.
- 27:55Speaker: And I'm sorry you had that experience.
- 27:57Speaker: Well, we're good now.
- 28:01Speaker: Good.
- 28:02Speaker: Jason.
- 28:02Speaker: What's next?
- 28:06Speaker: What's another simple thing you can do today?
- 28:14Speaker: Never make assumptions about.
- 28:22Speaker: A brother's background or status.
- 28:25Speaker: Get to meet all different people
- 28:29Speaker: in lodge and even people you
- 28:31Speaker: know.
- 28:32Speaker: Um. You know, I, I was in lodge last.
- 28:43Speaker: I'd say last month, uh, manassa and was kind of off sitting by
- 28:47Speaker: myself and, uh.
- 28:52Speaker: I had a brother come up and, uh, you know, sit down and I was
- 28:58Speaker: like, oh, you shouldn't be sitting by yourself.
- 29:00Speaker: Uh, I'm like, well, yeah, you know, there's a lot of heavy
- 29:05Speaker: stuff going on.
- 29:07Speaker: And, uh, he's like, wow, I, I would not have thought that from
- 29:13Speaker: the way you carried yourself.
- 29:16Speaker: And so like, I think it's, it's important to understand that,
- 29:21Speaker: um, Um, you know, you could have brothers who are there who are
- 29:25Speaker: all smiles and they're going through the hardest period in
- 29:28Speaker: their entire lives.
- 29:29Speaker: Um, and so don't, don't make assumptions about.
- 29:37Speaker: What the brother's going through
- 29:39Speaker: with their station is, um, just,
- 29:42Speaker: you know, try to be genuine, um,
- 29:46Speaker: and, and try to make sure, you
- 29:48Speaker: know, when they, when they talk,
- 29:50Speaker: you listen.
- 29:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker: Um, I like that because it's,
- 29:55Speaker: uh, to make it more of a, of a
- 29:57Speaker: positive.
- 29:58Speaker: It's, uh, kind of read the room and be authentic.
- 30:03Speaker: Well as authentic and like
- 30:05Speaker: active listening to yes, like
- 30:07Speaker: participate in active listening
- 30:08Speaker: if you're in a conversation with
- 30:10Speaker: somebody.
- 30:11Speaker: Yep.
- 30:12Speaker: Don't listen to respond.
- 30:14Speaker: Listen to understand.
- 30:16Speaker: Sounds cliche, but it's, it's these are cliches for a reason.
- 30:21Speaker: Mhm.
- 30:22Speaker: So if you ever encounter that,
- 30:24Speaker: start every sentence off in your
- 30:26Speaker: response with as an empath
- 30:29Speaker: comma.
- 30:29Speaker: And then.
- 30:33Speaker: Uh, I watch a tick tock recently where and I, because this is
- 30:36Speaker: something I've been working on, you know, years ago and where
- 30:41Speaker: it's, you know, you ask like, hey, Joe, like, have you
- 30:45Speaker: traveled anywhere lately?
- 30:46Speaker: And Joe's like, hey, you know, I just, I was just in Kansas City
- 30:50Speaker: and then you immediately go, well, I was in Kansas City once.
- 30:52Speaker: And let me tell you about all the stuff that I did when I was
- 30:54Speaker: in Kansas City.
- 30:54Speaker: It's like, wait, wait, wait, you know, that's not a conversation.
- 30:56Speaker: That's just you waiting to
- 30:58Speaker: insert yourself into the story,
- 31:01Speaker: right?
- 31:01Speaker: It's, uh, what do you call it?
- 31:03Speaker: Uh, a main character syndrome.
- 31:05Speaker: That's what you should not do when you're, when you're hanging
- 31:08Speaker: out with brothers.
- 31:09Speaker: Um, of course, Robert and I, you
- 31:12Speaker: know, it's a great way for
- 31:13Speaker: everyone to immediately
- 31:15Speaker: understand that you're an
- 31:16Speaker: asshole.
- 31:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker: Avoid that guy.
- 31:18Speaker: Yeah, but but the opposite is true.
- 31:20Speaker: I'm not talking to you ever again.
- 31:21Speaker: Okay.
- 31:22Speaker: Exactly.
- 31:23Speaker: Um. And Robert and I are big fans of, um, how to win friends
- 31:26Speaker: and influence people.
- 31:27Speaker: Right.
- 31:27Speaker: Like, the very first thing is
- 31:29Speaker: genuinely care about the other
- 31:31Speaker: person.
- 31:32Speaker: It's not about you.
- 31:33Speaker: It despite what you you think it is not all about you.
- 31:38Speaker: Yep.
- 31:39Speaker: That's how you get there, Robert.
- 31:42Speaker: Next up.
- 31:44Speaker: So there are some things I think I'll save for later, because
- 31:48Speaker: there are things that I have witnessed Joe do, and I think he
- 31:53Speaker: may mention this.
- 31:54Speaker: I don't want to say them because
- 31:55Speaker: I thought they were amazing when
- 31:56Speaker: he was doing the statute of
- 31:58Speaker: limitations up or, uh, so this
- 32:03Speaker: idea, uh, was born out of a, an
- 32:06Speaker: educational.
- 32:10Speaker: Idea that I heard about.
- 32:12Speaker: Um, but I think you can make it
- 32:16Speaker: less, uh, like involved by just
- 32:22Speaker: amending it.
- 32:23Speaker: So a candlelight seventeen hundreds ritual night.
- 32:28Speaker: So if you don't have like, this is something you can put on the
- 32:33Speaker: invite to the meeting and that and a bro's going to read that.
- 32:37Speaker: And he might think, wow, I gotta go to that.
- 32:40Speaker: That'll be sweet.
- 32:41Speaker: So no electric lights.
- 32:43Speaker: You gotta leave your smartphones
- 32:44Speaker: outside the lodge unless you
- 32:46Speaker: got, you know, you're on vibrate
- 32:47Speaker: and you got emergency situation,
- 32:48Speaker: whatever.
- 32:49Speaker: We all know those things.
- 32:50Speaker: Uh, like no power, no Wi-Fi, nothing.
- 32:54Speaker: Just do candles.
- 32:57Speaker: And like, most rural lodges.
- 32:59Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:02Speaker: Uh, and then afterward, Stella Moon Lodge in twenty twenty six.
- 33:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:07Speaker: And then after you guys do the
- 33:08Speaker: ritual, like you're in
- 33:09Speaker: candlelight, you do it, you kind
- 33:10Speaker: of feel it, you know, and maybe
- 33:12Speaker: you, you do some, some cool
- 33:15Speaker: reflection moments or whatever
- 33:17Speaker: in this nice, really cool
- 33:19Speaker: atmosphere.
- 33:20Speaker: And then afterward, if you can find a nice place that you guys
- 33:26Speaker: like to go that doesn't have a thousand TVs, you know, go there
- 33:30Speaker: and have a pint or a Coke or whatever, follow it up with a
- 33:33Speaker: little, you know, historic pub fare or something.
- 33:36Speaker: Um, or if you don't have a, uh,
- 33:40Speaker: a moratorium against drinking in
- 33:42Speaker: your lodges, you know, crack a
- 33:43Speaker: few beers in the, in the, uh, in
- 33:46Speaker: the dining hall and like further
- 33:50Speaker: fellowship.
- 33:51Speaker: Um, but still just over candle, uh, keep it cool like that.
- 33:56Speaker: The original idea that, that I was thinking about this from was
- 34:00Speaker: a more complex idea that, um, a brother had told me they did and
- 34:04Speaker: it was amazing.
- 34:06Speaker: Basically, they passed out candles to everyone in the lodge
- 34:12Speaker: who came in, and then they did the lodge, uh, in um, like in
- 34:18Speaker: candlelight or whatever, very low light, just the altar light
- 34:21Speaker: and I think one up by the master and they passed out these
- 34:25Speaker: candles and they asked a question like a philosophical
- 34:28Speaker: open ended question.
- 34:30Speaker: And if you answered, you could light your candle.
- 34:34Speaker: And then by the end of the
- 34:35Speaker: night, the idea is everybody
- 34:37Speaker: brought light to the lodge,
- 34:40Speaker: right?
- 34:40Speaker: That's cool.
- 34:41Speaker: So it was a, it was a like, it
- 34:44Speaker: sounds goofy, a little bit
- 34:47Speaker: maybe, but I thought it was a
- 34:48Speaker: really cool way to physically
- 34:51Speaker: manifest the the thing we say we
- 34:54Speaker: do.
- 34:57Speaker: I could take some notes.
- 34:58Speaker: Now.
- 34:58Speaker: That's a good one.
- 34:59Speaker: I love it.
- 35:02Speaker: Well, I can't top that one, but I'll try.
- 35:04Speaker: You can.
- 35:04Speaker: And it's not my idea.
- 35:05Speaker: I, if I had to guess, I, I think
- 35:07Speaker: maybe it was Adam Rigdon in
- 35:09Speaker: Wisconsin.
- 35:10Speaker: Maybe.
- 35:11Speaker: Or maybe it was somebody in Colorado, but I don't know.
- 35:16Speaker: Uh. Let's see.
- 35:17Speaker: Next up on my list is do the retrospective for your lodge
- 35:24Speaker: right after the lodge meeting.
- 35:26Speaker: Doesn't have to be a big, big, formal thing.
- 35:28Speaker: No post-it notes.
- 35:29Speaker: No whole, you know, stop people from leaving, but do some
- 35:33Speaker: handshakes on the way out the door and say, hey, what did you
- 35:36Speaker: like about tonight's meeting?
- 35:37Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker: What can we do better?
- 35:39Speaker: What didn't you like?
- 35:40Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:41Speaker: What didn't you like?
- 35:41Speaker: Right.
- 35:42Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:42Speaker: If you could change one thing, if you could be the change, what
- 35:45Speaker: would you change?
- 35:47Speaker: So. Well, and a little side note for that.
- 35:51Speaker: Don't just ask the people that you know are going to give you a
- 35:56Speaker: response you like, you know, ask that grumpy past master, hey,
- 36:00Speaker: would you like about tonight?
- 36:01Speaker: Oh, that was too long.
- 36:03Speaker: You know, get that input because they've still taken the time to
- 36:06Speaker: show up that evening, you know, and even if you don't want to
- 36:09Speaker: hear it, it's feedback.
- 36:10Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:10Speaker: In fact, I'd even take that a step further.
- 36:14Speaker: Find those guys that you know are going to find something to
- 36:16Speaker: complain about because, right, you're, you're trying to do this
- 36:20Speaker: in the spirit of harmony.
- 36:21Speaker: You're trying to solicit, you know, again, non-confirmation
- 36:25Speaker: bias, non selection bias.
- 36:28Speaker: And, you know, you don't have to
- 36:29Speaker: take all the advice that the
- 36:32Speaker: free advice you get, but you
- 36:34Speaker: can't say you didn't know about
- 36:35Speaker: it.
- 36:36Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:37Speaker: So do that retrospective.
- 36:38Speaker: We did a whole episode on like
- 36:40Speaker: retrospectives, uh, in, in
- 36:42Speaker: masonry.
- 36:43Speaker: It doesn't need to be that formal, but asking, just asking
- 36:46Speaker: how you can improve both good and bad goes a long way.
- 36:50Speaker: Right, Joe?
- 36:52Speaker: Exactly.
- 36:53Speaker: How could you improve on your
- 36:54Speaker: previous questions with your
- 36:55Speaker: next question or your next
- 36:57Speaker: answer?
- 36:58Speaker: Excellent.
- 36:58Speaker: Um, this is one that, uh, I'm a big fan of, and it takes a
- 37:03Speaker: little bit of work and coordinating Hawaiian shirt
- 37:06Speaker: night, not Hawaiian shirt night.
- 37:08Speaker: Joe does not like Hawaiian shirt.
- 37:09Speaker: Night.
- 37:10Speaker: Aloha, bitches.
- 37:11Speaker: Oh. personally invite members to the meeting.
- 37:17Speaker: So not just a trestle board, not just something that goes out in
- 37:20Speaker: the mail, not just an email reminder that says, hey, our
- 37:23Speaker: stated meeting is this night, blah, blah, blah.
- 37:26Speaker: Grab some numbers, hand them out
- 37:28Speaker: to brothers and have these
- 37:29Speaker: people call.
- 37:31Speaker: Say, hey brother, how are you?
- 37:32Speaker: Looking forward to seeing you on Friday and have a five minute
- 37:35Speaker: conversation with him.
- 37:36Speaker: A personal invitation has more
- 37:39Speaker: weight than any single email
- 37:40Speaker: you're ever going to send out,
- 37:42Speaker: and I guarantee you that ninety
- 37:43Speaker: nine percent of lodges do not do
- 37:45Speaker: that.
- 37:47Speaker: No, it's it's so true.
- 37:48Speaker: Um, I think back to when I was
- 37:51Speaker: really deep into all the
- 37:53Speaker: membership data about ten years
- 37:55Speaker: ago, uh, I was working with, um,
- 37:58Speaker: s Brent Morris and he was
- 38:00Speaker: talking about how they got, um,
- 38:02Speaker: they got over the hump at that
- 38:04Speaker: time for Scottish Rite Masons to
- 38:06Speaker: come back.
- 38:08Speaker: And, uh, one thing that they did at the time, if my memory serves
- 38:13Speaker: me correctly, was they reached back out to the brothers who had
- 38:18Speaker: been demoted over the past five years or more and just said, hey
- 38:22Speaker: brother, we miss you.
- 38:24Speaker: And you know, we're doing this thing where if you just pay, pay
- 38:29Speaker: one year's dues, you'll be healed and you'll be back.
- 38:32Speaker: We'll walk.
- 38:32Speaker: Welcome you right back.
- 38:33Speaker: No fuss, no muss.
- 38:35Speaker: And, uh, according to Brent Morris, that most of the
- 38:41Speaker: feedback, the qualitative feedback that they got was.
- 38:45Speaker: I'm just happy you called.
- 38:48Speaker: I didn't.
- 38:49Speaker: I would have paid more than one year's dues.
- 38:51Speaker: It's the fact that you just literally picked up the phone
- 38:54Speaker: and called and asked how I was doing and where I've been.
- 38:58Speaker: Now I'm ready to come back.
- 38:59Speaker: So you don't know how a simple thing that takes minutes to do.
- 39:05Speaker: Instead, a five minute timer on
- 39:06Speaker: your phone call up and say, hey,
- 39:10Speaker: you haven't been to Lodge for a
- 39:11Speaker: while.
- 39:11Speaker: And I'll say, got it?
- 39:13Speaker: Let me let me kids get a little bit older first.
- 39:15Speaker: Well be ready.
- 39:17Speaker: Yeah.
- 39:17Speaker: Right.
- 39:18Speaker: Yeah.
- 39:18Speaker: Because there, you know, there's going to be somebody and they're
- 39:22Speaker: going to say, you might ask him something and maybe you didn't
- 39:26Speaker: craft your questioning.
- 39:28Speaker: Right.
- 39:29Speaker: And they're going to start talking.
- 39:32Speaker: And you know what?
- 39:35Speaker: Uh, little old retail trick, but
- 39:37Speaker: something I heard for the first
- 39:39Speaker: time from, uh, Chad Lasik
- 39:41Speaker: instead of in your head going,
- 39:43Speaker: oh, God.
- 39:44Speaker: Go. Oh, good.
- 39:46Speaker: And, uh, and, and, and just get
- 39:49Speaker: in it, you know, let that person
- 39:51Speaker: talk.
- 39:52Speaker: More often than not, you're the guy.
- 39:55Speaker: Like, they're not talking because they talk all the time.
- 39:59Speaker: They're talking because they don't.
- 40:01Speaker: Well said.
- 40:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 40:02Speaker: No, I just just to add a little cherry on top of that John cake.
- 40:06Speaker: Um, Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker: It's delicious.
- 40:09Speaker: Picture that.
- 40:10Speaker: Um, so this didn't actually start with me.
- 40:13Speaker: This started with the master a couple of years before me.
- 40:15Speaker: Um, Phil um, for those that remember Brother Phil.
- 40:19Speaker: Master.
- 40:19Speaker: Good dude moved to Florida.
- 40:20Speaker: Oh. Brother McCracken.
- 40:22Speaker: Yes.
- 40:23Speaker: Um, he started what we call the Sunshine Committee, and it was
- 40:27Speaker: brothers who they've not seen in lodge in a while, to the point
- 40:32Speaker: where, like most of these guys, we knew them by name only.
- 40:34Speaker: We did not know what their faces looked like.
- 40:36Speaker: Um, and he started Sunshine Committee.
- 40:38Speaker: He's like, every month you're
- 40:39Speaker: going to call these people and
- 40:40Speaker: you're going to ask them how
- 40:41Speaker: they're doing, ask them what's
- 40:43Speaker: going on and ask them if they
- 40:44Speaker: need anything.
- 40:44Speaker: And it was a list of about probably sixty people when all
- 40:49Speaker: is said and done.
- 40:50Speaker: Um, I cannot and we started that year and we did it for a good
- 40:53Speaker: couple of years.
- 40:54Speaker: Uh, I can't tell you how many new faces would show up at a
- 40:57Speaker: lodge meeting one night.
- 40:58Speaker: It's like, hey, I haven't been to lodge in twenty years.
- 41:00Speaker: It's like, awesome, so glad you're here.
- 41:02Speaker: And we've gotten folks that have
- 41:04Speaker: been active ever since that
- 41:05Speaker: initial phone call, um, that he
- 41:07Speaker: started.
- 41:08Speaker: Um, some of them became officers.
- 41:10Speaker: Some of them now come to lodge all the time.
- 41:12Speaker: Some of them are.
- 41:14Speaker: And these are again older brothers, right.
- 41:16Speaker: Who haven't been to lodge in ten, fifteen, twenty years.
- 41:19Speaker: Um, who ask things like, hey,
- 41:20Speaker: when are we going to do the next
- 41:21Speaker: book club?
- 41:22Speaker: You know, it's not your younger guys, it's your guys that have
- 41:25Speaker: been away from masonry and long for it again, because someone
- 41:30Speaker: using Jason's parlance, gave a shit enough to reach out and
- 41:34Speaker: call them and see how they work.
- 41:35Speaker: Oh, is that my parlance?
- 41:37Speaker: Because you're the potty mouth nowadays, not me.
- 41:39Speaker: Trademark.
- 41:40Speaker: You okay?
- 41:41Speaker: There you go.
- 41:45Speaker: Yes.
- 41:46Speaker: So be the change.
- 41:47Speaker: Can we move on?
- 41:48Speaker: Okay.
- 41:49Speaker: Is it over to Jason?
- 41:50Speaker: I don't know if I'll get the censor button ready.
- 41:53Speaker: Uh, you went last, right?
- 41:55Speaker: So I guess me.
- 41:57Speaker: It's back to you.
- 41:57Speaker: Okay.
- 41:58Speaker: You just you just pulled that thread so long.
- 42:01Speaker: I know you unraveled my shirt.
- 42:03Speaker: Um. No, I went.
- 42:08Speaker: I went, it was personally invite people.
- 42:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:11Speaker: So it is.
- 42:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:13Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:13Speaker: Jason.
- 42:17Speaker: I'm just along for the ride in this situationship.
- 42:22Speaker: Um.
- 42:25Speaker: Oh. Let's see.
- 42:27Speaker: Um. Tell a master every now and then he's doing a good job.
- 42:37Speaker: Ooh, that's a lonely office.
- 42:41Speaker: And it is a lonely year.
- 42:44Speaker: Um, true.
- 42:46Speaker: And, uh, everyone's a critic and no one's happy, and you're
- 42:55Speaker: burning yourself out, and you're just doing the best you can a
- 43:00Speaker: lot of times.
- 43:01Speaker: So you know, You know, make sure.
- 43:06Speaker: Make sure the master knows you appreciate him, you appreciate
- 43:10Speaker: what he's doing or what he's trying to do.
- 43:15Speaker: Definitely the master, and I'd say extend it to a lot of the
- 43:21Speaker: other brothers too, but more especially the master.
- 43:28Speaker: All right, Robert, what say you?
- 43:31Speaker: Here's a short one, and I'm
- 43:32Speaker: going to kick it off of, uh,
- 43:35Speaker: contacting those those brothers,
- 43:38Speaker: um, a lodge chauffeur rideshare
- 43:40Speaker: program for a brother, a
- 43:44Speaker: brother.
- 43:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker: There's all you gotta do.
- 43:47Speaker: Just make a spreadsheet, a group chat or something.
- 43:49Speaker: You pair some younger guys, uh, with some older guys that are
- 43:54Speaker: kind of live maybe around each other or who are willing to make
- 43:56Speaker: the time and, um, you know, just say, hey, if, if driving at
- 44:03Speaker: night is your thing, man.
- 44:06Speaker: We've got a bro who just would love to pick you up.
- 44:09Speaker: Right?
- 44:10Speaker: And, uh, if you gotta leave a
- 44:11Speaker: little early, that bro is
- 44:13Speaker: totally fine.
- 44:13Speaker: Leaving early with you to bring you home.
- 44:16Speaker: Uh, there's.
- 44:18Speaker: Yeah, these guys want to come to
- 44:19Speaker: lot, but driving at night is a
- 44:21Speaker: thing.
- 44:21Speaker: Or parking might be an obstacle, right?
- 44:23Speaker: Maybe there's not a handicap real close.
- 44:27Speaker: So you can have the guy pull right up and, um, yeah, it it,
- 44:32Speaker: it also just, it builds some intergenerational bonds too,
- 44:36Speaker: because then you get some older members who aren't quite
- 44:39Speaker: thinking, oh, um, these younger guys are lame.
- 44:45Speaker: No, they, they might still say you're lame, but also you're
- 44:50Speaker: dependable and, and damn it, I love that kid because he's
- 44:53Speaker: always helping me out.
- 44:54Speaker: And that's brotherhood, you know what I mean?
- 44:56Speaker: So I that and and you know what it it does take some some
- 45:01Speaker: putting yourself out there.
- 45:04Speaker: It's like it might be
- 45:05Speaker: uncomfortable for you to do
- 45:06Speaker: that, but more often than not,
- 45:08Speaker: you'll find something to talk
- 45:09Speaker: about.
- 45:10Speaker: It's not going to be like when you're in the in the car with
- 45:12Speaker: your best friend, and you fart and roll up the windows like hot
- 45:17Speaker: box and crank the heat.
- 45:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 45:23Speaker: Wow.
- 45:23Speaker: And I think like going back to
- 45:25Speaker: what you said, John, to genuine
- 45:27Speaker: interest to like, I'm not doing
- 45:28Speaker: this to, to just facilitate this
- 45:33Speaker: thing.
- 45:34Speaker: It's not a thing I have to do.
- 45:36Speaker: It's the thing I get to do.
- 45:37Speaker: It's, oh, gosh, I love that framing so much.
- 45:40Speaker: Um, it's that is so powerful.
- 45:42Speaker: Um, I, I, I've been using that a lot lately too, is I get to do
- 45:47Speaker: this like when I don't, when I'm tired at the end of the day and
- 45:51Speaker: my kids ask for something and I'm like, I get to get up and
- 45:57Speaker: get that for my kid.
- 46:00Speaker: Uh, Are a constant reminder of it.
- 46:04Speaker: Here's a fun one that I had.
- 46:07Speaker: Be the Lodge JW.
- 46:11Speaker: Oh, so even before you open lodge, there's nothing wrong
- 46:18Speaker: with, uh, with with the master's permission setting the mood.
- 46:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 46:23Speaker: Bring a little Bluetooth speaker in and play some light tunes.
- 46:26Speaker: Uh, you know, whatever is kind of, uh, not gauche for that
- 46:31Speaker: culture of the lodge.
- 46:32Speaker: You know, you throw a little
- 46:33Speaker: classical music on, you want to
- 46:34Speaker: throw a little light rock,
- 46:35Speaker: whatever, whatever kind of
- 46:37Speaker: floats the lodges culture, but
- 46:39Speaker: some background, some background
- 46:41Speaker: ambiance to help kind of set the
- 46:43Speaker: tone.
- 46:43Speaker: It's something that you don't get at home.
- 46:45Speaker: Something you don't get while
- 46:47Speaker: watching Netflix alone on the on
- 46:48Speaker: the couch.
- 46:49Speaker: So yeah, that's, that's easy peasy.
- 46:51Speaker: Easy thing to do.
- 46:53Speaker: Cost you nothing and, uh, can
- 46:55Speaker: definitely enhance the lodge
- 46:56Speaker: experience.
- 46:58Speaker: Big shout out to, brother Tom at
- 47:00Speaker: Manasseh who brings the, uh, the
- 47:03Speaker: heart pumping Hans Zimmer every
- 47:05Speaker: month.
- 47:06Speaker: Um.
- 47:06Speaker: Wow.
- 47:08Speaker: Zimmer.
- 47:09Speaker: Oh my God.
- 47:09Speaker: Zimmer, baby.
- 47:10Speaker: Yeah!
- 47:11Speaker: Love that.
- 47:12Speaker: That's how he do is Tom is the
- 47:14Speaker: one who played a rendition of
- 47:19Speaker: Metallica Fade to Black on
- 47:22Speaker: acoustic guitar.
- 47:23Speaker: Yes.
- 47:24Speaker: Wow.
- 47:25Speaker: One night and I was like, oh, man.
- 47:27Speaker: It was during reflection.
- 47:29Speaker: And it was the whole song, just quiet.
- 47:31Speaker: And it really did set a tone for the Lodge.
- 47:33Speaker: It was a nice time.
- 47:34Speaker: He did an acoustic guitar of the interstellar song.
- 47:39Speaker: Uh oh.
- 47:39Speaker: Interesting.
- 47:40Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:41Speaker: Your favorite movie?
- 47:42Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:42Speaker: It is.
- 47:43Speaker: Um, yes.
- 47:44Speaker: But yeah, Metallica and Hans Zimmer and I know we've said
- 47:47Speaker: this before, I mentioned this story before, but, uh, Jason was
- 47:52Speaker: my lodge JW Lodge musician, uh, during my year at the lodge and.
- 47:59Speaker: I'll never forget.
- 48:00Speaker: You know, I'm scrambling to get ready to open, make sure I got
- 48:03Speaker: my lines memorized, just all the logistics and mechanics that go
- 48:07Speaker: go with that.
- 48:07Speaker: And being a young master at that.
- 48:10Speaker: And, you know, we're, we usually
- 48:13Speaker: play music while, um, the, uh,
- 48:16Speaker: the deacons are walking around
- 48:18Speaker: setting up the furniture of the
- 48:20Speaker: lodge.
- 48:21Speaker: So it starts to, you know, the buzzing of the room starts to
- 48:25Speaker: settle down and I hear some classical music that's familiar.
- 48:31Speaker: And I'm like, where have I heard this before?
- 48:34Speaker: It's not it's not like Mozart.
- 48:38Speaker: What is this?
- 48:39Speaker: And, uh, Jason had found a great
- 48:42Speaker: playlist of like, modern rock
- 48:44Speaker: songs like welcome to the
- 48:45Speaker: jungle.
- 48:45Speaker: Right?
- 48:46Speaker: But in a classical music style,
- 48:49Speaker: it was it was just icing on the
- 48:52Speaker: cake.
- 48:52Speaker: And Hauser, the two cellos
- 48:54Speaker: version of welcome to the
- 48:56Speaker: jungle.
- 48:57Speaker: Yeah, it was.
- 48:58Speaker: Welcome to the jungle.
- 48:58Speaker: Gosh.
- 48:59Speaker: Welcome to the jungle.
- 49:00Speaker: You just burned that memory in my head, so I was thinking.
- 49:03Speaker: I was thinking you were going to say, like, uh, he found a a
- 49:06Speaker: classical rendition of Dead Mouse or something, since, you
- 49:09Speaker: know, you're nice, you know?
- 49:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:12Speaker: I was gonna say like, some big beat.
- 49:14Speaker: That's awesome.
- 49:15Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:18Speaker: They just have to, like, get a cello in there to like, drag it
- 49:21Speaker: across the string.
- 49:24Speaker: Just drag the cello across the, the ground, the asphalt.
- 49:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:30Speaker: Closest thing.
- 49:34Speaker: All right.
- 49:34Speaker: Speed round.
- 49:36Speaker: Last.
- 49:37Speaker: Last one.
- 49:37Speaker: Go, Joe.
- 49:39Speaker: Uh, give everyone in lodge a job.
- 49:41Speaker: Make him the photographer.
- 49:42Speaker: Make him the web guy.
- 49:43Speaker: Make him the clean the dishes guy.
- 49:46Speaker: Give every single person a job
- 49:48Speaker: and give them incentive to help
- 49:51Speaker: Jason.
- 49:53Speaker: Um. The extra generous and, um, caring and go out of your way
- 50:04Speaker: to, um, have a real genuine conversation with any family
- 50:10Speaker: members of brothers who are there for dinner.
- 50:14Speaker: Love it.
- 50:15Speaker: Robert.
- 50:16Speaker: Mid meeting.
- 50:18Speaker: Spend the time, go to refreshment, then go to the
- 50:22Speaker: dining room and have a toast.
- 50:24Speaker: Whether it's to missing brothers or people who are sick or
- 50:28Speaker: Masonic birthdays, whatever.
- 50:30Speaker: And then go back in.
- 50:32Speaker: Uh. Resume labor.
- 50:34Speaker: Finish the meeting.
- 50:35Speaker: Mhm.
- 50:36Speaker: Love it.
- 50:37Speaker: And mine volunteer just.
- 50:40Speaker: There's, you know, there's a committee that's not filled.
- 50:43Speaker: So be that guy.
- 50:45Speaker: Be the change.
- 50:48Speaker: All right.
- 50:50Speaker: Final thoughts.
- 50:50Speaker: Starting with Jason.
- 50:51Speaker: Bring it home.
- 50:53Speaker: Either change.
- 50:55Speaker: who?
- 50:57Speaker: And.
- 50:58Speaker: Robert.
- 51:00Speaker: Uh uh.
- 51:03Speaker: Say it, say it, say it, Joe.
- 51:06Speaker: Be the change.
- 51:07Speaker: Be the change, my man.
- 51:11Speaker: Joe.
- 51:12Speaker: Joe did amazing dinners.
- 51:14Speaker: He started amazing dinners before Lodge.
- 51:16Speaker: Remember that?
- 51:17Speaker: Families came out.
- 51:18Speaker: It was awesome.
- 51:18Speaker: I thought you were going to maybe say that enhancing
- 51:20Speaker: experience, but, uh.
- 51:22Speaker: Sorry.
- 51:23Speaker: We'll do this again.
- 51:24Speaker: We'll have a part two.
- 51:26Speaker: Yeah.
- 51:27Speaker: Uh, very popular in the chat.
- 51:28Speaker: A lot of good ideas in the chat to Joe.
- 51:30Speaker: Final thoughts.
- 51:31Speaker: You know what I'm gonna say?
- 51:33Speaker: Be the change, be the change, change the be.
- 51:39Speaker: Please, please turn that into some audio track and put some
- 51:43Speaker: Skrillex on it.
- 51:47Speaker: Dubstep.
- 51:47Speaker: Yeah, let's do it.
- 51:50Speaker: It is definitely happening.
- 51:57Speaker: How'd that go?
- 51:57Speaker: Joe, get some glow sticks.
- 52:01Speaker: You are really very happy to be here.
- 52:05Speaker: Mixing genres tonight?
- 52:07Speaker: Yes.
- 52:08Speaker: You're a genre.
- 52:09Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 52:10Speaker: Well, um.
- 52:11Speaker: This was fun.
- 52:12Speaker: This was exciting.
- 52:13Speaker: And, um, from.
- 52:15Speaker: According to the chat, lots of good ideas were flowing, both,
- 52:18Speaker: uh, bouncing off of each other, as well as just assembling some
- 52:21Speaker: things that we've talked about.
- 52:22Speaker: But now in one place, I think
- 52:24Speaker: the takeaway here is most, most
- 52:28Speaker: of these things are easy to do
- 52:30Speaker: require not much, uh, cash or
- 52:34Speaker: effort to set up and make a
- 52:36Speaker: difference.
- 52:37Speaker: So with that, be the change and keep searching for more light.
- 52:40Speaker: Have a good night.
- 52:41Speaker: Well, the change, the change.
