- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:04Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. The World's Origionale,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. You know around the freaking team
- 0:20Speaker 1: for like twenty years. I mean absolutely, I don't what
- 0:26Speaker 1: does it give me any credential? And you know, people
- 0:28Speaker 1: look at Bill is like, you know, kind of straight lace.
- 0:30Speaker 1: He's a rebel, He's a rabbel rouser. He's been all
- 0:33Speaker 1: his life. I was interested in hiring Gerad that would
- 0:36Speaker 1: be part of my interview. Was like, Gerarde, what do
- 0:38Speaker 1: you do there? I just want to say something about
- 0:40Speaker 1: Matt Patricia because you know, it's it's you know, hunting season,
- 0:44Speaker 1: Patriot's Nation. Instead of killing this guy, they should be
- 0:46Speaker 1: thanking him. Yeah, I mean sorry, I mean the sacrifices
- 0:50Speaker 1: that this man made. Yeah, I mean why do you
- 0:53Speaker 1: have to like thank him? He did a terrible job,
- 0:55Speaker 1: but you don't have to call him names. I get that.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I mean, really we should thank him to thank you
- 1:00Speaker 1: for wasting a year. Thank you. I mean I think
- 1:04Speaker 1: we should just buy him like a new car. If
- 1:09Speaker 1: they're good, they're good. I don't care who their daddy.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Is This is Patriots Unfiltered fueled by Duncan. No right
- 1:17Speaker 1: there what that referred to? All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It is Tuesday here at Gillette Stadium, and uh, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 1: we're in between having one of our first emergency podcasts
- 1:32Speaker 1: of twenty twenty three. In case you missed it, we
- 1:34Speaker 1: got together on Friday to discuss the release that went
- 1:37Speaker 1: out Thursday night. We felt it was warranted. Um And
- 1:41Speaker 1: so if you have I'll just start right off that
- 1:44Speaker 1: you can sign up for those emergency podcasts. You go
- 1:46Speaker 1: to Patriots dot com slash Audio, slash alert and you
- 1:50Speaker 1: can sign up to make sure that as soon as
- 1:52Speaker 1: we post one of those things, you get alerted so
- 1:55Speaker 1: you can see it right away. But you know, we
- 1:58Speaker 1: have to, I guess start off with you know what
- 2:01Speaker 1: happened on Thursday, and even though we did have the
- 2:03Speaker 1: emergency kind of we've had a little bit more time
- 2:06Speaker 1: to digest it. Now things are happening around the league
- 2:09Speaker 1: and you know, uh, Deuce is here, to Marius here, Evan, Paul,
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm here, Matt's in the booth. It's it's a full house.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Got faith, don't forget about faith. Faith making addition, Faith
- 2:22Speaker 1: is learning the ropes in the producer room. So, um,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but you know, any thoughts you know, from Thursday to
- 2:29Speaker 1: now about that release? I mean, sure, I'll go No,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm Lumberjacks come off season two, so right now I
- 2:40Speaker 1: got off season a little shave going. Um oh, A
- 2:44Speaker 1: couple of things. I mean, I I just think the
- 2:45Speaker 1: biggest thing for me is it sounds like they're going
- 2:47Speaker 1: to hire an actual offensive coordinator, and I just I
- 2:49Speaker 1: like that. You're gonna have some people coming in. I
- 2:51Speaker 1: don't know if they're gonna be doing the whole Twitter,
- 2:53Speaker 1: Dog and Pony show that goes on an extensive interview process.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We decided to stay with Matt. We just uh, they
- 3:02Speaker 1: better not tweet that out. Um, but yeah, it's uh.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I just like that we talked about last week. Didn't
- 3:06Speaker 1: know if they were going to actually hire an offensive coordinator.
- 3:08Speaker 1: They're just gonna bring a guy in and kind of
- 3:10Speaker 1: shuffle the decks, you know, shuffle the jeck chairs, so
- 3:13Speaker 1: to speak. So I like that, and I like, I like,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, signs pointing to Mayo being around. But I
- 3:18Speaker 1: hesitate to get too speculative on that because I mean
- 3:21Speaker 1: I did see over the weekend he turned down the
- 3:23Speaker 1: Panther's job. Reported well, the Panther's job, so yeah, Um,
- 3:29Speaker 1: that to me tells me he's coming. Yeah. So it
- 3:30Speaker 1: does seem like he's going to be back in what capacity.
- 3:32Speaker 1: That's That's kind of what we've been talking about. But
- 3:34Speaker 1: I think it's it's good news. It just seems like
- 3:36Speaker 1: a good way to start the offseason if you're a
- 3:38Speaker 1: Patriots fan, to get all right, you know, we're gonna
- 3:40Speaker 1: keep one of your long time really value coaches and
- 3:43Speaker 1: we're actually going to get on the offensive coordinator matter.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I haven't heard from you yet him. My biggest thing
- 3:49Speaker 1: is the transparency, right, I mean, especially after last season
- 3:51Speaker 1: where there was so much ambiguity of who's calling the plays,
- 3:54Speaker 1: who's not, who's this, who's that, to have to actually
- 3:57Speaker 1: come out and say we are doing this and not
- 3:59Speaker 1: just have everyone guessing like, oh, has drawed me, I'm
- 4:01Speaker 1: going to go interview for the Browns DC job. Is
- 4:03Speaker 1: he gonna do this? He's gonna do that? You know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: are the Patriot's going to go after O'Brien. It's like
- 4:08Speaker 1: they're making it clear like we are going to hire someone,
- 4:12Speaker 1: we are going to do this, it's just something that
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know, we didn't have to see like all last seasons. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: a bunch of guessing and now it's like, forget about
- 4:19Speaker 1: it all last season forever for the last twenty one years,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you know, we've never seen anything like it. So I
- 4:24Speaker 1: just think the transparency for me, even if we don't
- 4:27Speaker 1: necessarily know precisely what's going to happen, it's like that
- 4:30Speaker 1: transparency of we are planning on doing this and starting
- 4:34Speaker 1: this next week. It's huge evan accountability and transparency, both
- 4:39Speaker 1: of them. I think finally we have some acknowledgement that
- 4:42Speaker 1: this wasn't good this past year on offense. And I
- 4:45Speaker 1: like that accountability because I felt that the Monday morning
- 4:49Speaker 1: press conference after the Bills lost with Bill Belichick, there
- 4:52Speaker 1: wasn't a ton of accountability. There was some finger pointing
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think going on there. So he finally get a
- 4:58Speaker 1: united front. This is not what is up to standard.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I like the transparency too. I think the last thing
- 5:06Speaker 1: that when I came up with the candidates list that
- 5:10Speaker 1: I posted on on Thursday night or Friday morning, every
- 5:13Speaker 1: other candidate besides Bill O'Brien um trying to finagle it right,
- 5:18Speaker 1: like I'm like, Okay, well, I like Zach Robinson. I
- 5:22Speaker 1: think he's a bright offensive coach. I think he's a
- 5:26Speaker 1: good quarterbacks coach. But is that system really what's best
- 5:31Speaker 1: for the Patriots if they go to a McVay shanahan
- 5:33Speaker 1: styles scheme and you're trying to piece together but the
- 5:37Speaker 1: only candidate that checks every single box is Bill O'Brien,
- 5:40Speaker 1: And I think we're at the point now where what
- 5:44Speaker 1: what's the hold up? Is it that Bill O'Brien's not
- 5:47Speaker 1: one hundred percent sold on coming back? Is it there?
- 5:49Speaker 1: They're not one hundred percent sold on Bill O'Brien, Like,
- 5:52Speaker 1: where is the disconnect? Because this, to me is a
- 5:55Speaker 1: slam duck. It's a guy that coach at Alabama, a
- 5:59Speaker 1: guy that coached year, a guy that has a relationship
- 6:01Speaker 1: with the quarterback. There's really no other candidate that fits
- 6:05Speaker 1: the bill better. The fact that they haven't announced O'Brien yet, Paul,
- 6:08Speaker 1: do you think that means anything or is it that's
- 6:11Speaker 1: I think the whole reason for the transparency is because
- 6:13Speaker 1: they've got in a little trouble last year for skirting
- 6:15Speaker 1: the rules, and I think they have to follow the
- 6:18Speaker 1: rules like everybody else. Right. Yeah. Yeah, so that that
- 6:21Speaker 1: to me is the biggest reason why we haven't heard
- 6:23Speaker 1: anything about O'Brien. That makes sense. I think you have
- 6:25Speaker 1: to go through and you know, Mike, you said you
- 6:27Speaker 1: don't know if they're going to have the Twitter thing.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think they are because I think it's kind of required.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think you need to sort of let people know that.
- 6:35Speaker 1: You know, one of the teams was a Houston that
- 6:37Speaker 1: just interviewed Sean Payton. Yeah, and they immediately you know,
- 6:40Speaker 1: we've concluded an interview with Sean Payton for our vacant
- 6:43Speaker 1: head coaching. I think that's maybe not like a rule
- 6:47Speaker 1: on paper with every team, but I think you're starting
- 6:49Speaker 1: to see that more and more around the league. You're
- 6:52Speaker 1: sort of letting the league knows, Yeah, these are the
- 6:55Speaker 1: guys we've talked to. We had an interview with this guy.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And I think part of that is is the rum rule.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I think the Patriots, the way they did it last
- 7:02Speaker 1: year with Matt Patricia, you know, I think they probably
- 7:07Speaker 1: were spoken to about it, you know, and making sure
- 7:09Speaker 1: they do it through the proper channels this time, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: that's you know, we look for little clues that might
- 7:15Speaker 1: be why they never gave a title. Oh well, I
- 7:17Speaker 1: think the biggest reason is the money. But yeah, because
- 7:20Speaker 1: then that that allowed them to say, well, we didn't
- 7:23Speaker 1: have an offensive coordinator. You know, it's nonsense. Wasted energy.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Wasted energy is right, is the right way to put it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It's just just you know, my god, how much of
- 7:34Speaker 1: that stuff that you let slide in the previous twenty
- 7:38Speaker 1: years now feels like wasted energy when you're not winning
- 7:40Speaker 1: playoff games anymore. Like a lot of a lot of
- 7:43Speaker 1: the subterfuge and stuff like that that they do. And
- 7:45Speaker 1: it's like, can you just yeah, you can afford to
- 7:47Speaker 1: be cute back then, you can't afford to be cute.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Like I always tease you, Mike, and I always say,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you still believe, right, you know, like those little things
- 7:55Speaker 1: that that there is. You know, there's a segment of
- 7:57Speaker 1: Patriots fans that still believe that. You know, the middle class.
- 8:02Speaker 1: It's you know, the cat management. It's not telling anybody
- 8:05Speaker 1: about injuries, you know, it's being evasive with them. That's
- 8:08Speaker 1: would allow them. No really good players allowed them to win,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know. And and if they didn't have the good players,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you can hide the injuries all you want, You're not
- 8:16Speaker 1: gonna win. Uh. The other thing that kind of snuck
- 8:19Speaker 1: out there, I don't know who reported it, but it
- 8:22Speaker 1: might have been um Phil Perry that Bill signed off
- 8:27Speaker 1: on the release that went out, because we all said, okay,
- 8:29Speaker 1: this is Robert, this is Robert saying okay, we're putting
- 8:32Speaker 1: this out there. And I think it was but he
- 8:35Speaker 1: reported I think it was him that Bill had signed
- 8:38Speaker 1: off on it as well. Everyone's just h yeah, yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you're not buying it. I mean, what is what alternative
- 8:47Speaker 1: would have? That's I mean that's kind of where I'm like,
- 8:51Speaker 1: he was okay with it because he didn't have a
- 8:52Speaker 1: choice and this would and I just I don't think
- 8:55Speaker 1: in a hundred years that he would ever want to
- 8:56Speaker 1: release something that says, hey, this is what we're thinking
- 8:58Speaker 1: of doing that. But I think he probably understood where
- 9:03Speaker 1: they were at. I mean, I think for me, it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: about optics too, you know, about getting fans back on
- 9:07Speaker 1: board as much as as as getting the team back
- 9:10Speaker 1: on board. But like, and I keep hitting that point,
- 9:12Speaker 1: just I think that that's what they wanted. I thought.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Evan brought up a good point about the Monday press
- 9:15Speaker 1: conference that we talked about last week that Bill kind
- 9:18Speaker 1: of seemed to be pointing fingers a little bit. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: I think if you look back real quick, the short
- 9:22Speaker 1: little timeline to feel like the off season, it's one
- 9:25Speaker 1: week old, like you know, we have all these things.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So immediately after the season was over, Robert Kraft issued
- 9:31Speaker 1: a letter it's a season ticket members, right, saying there
- 9:35Speaker 1: will be changes, right right, yea. The next day, the
- 9:38Speaker 1: head coach was like, well, you know, quarterback, I mean
- 9:44Speaker 1: you could play in this you could probably play in
- 9:46Speaker 1: this league. Yeah, you know, twenty seven to Cashpenning. And
- 9:49Speaker 1: then I guess he didn't hear me the first time, right,
- 9:52Speaker 1: So here's the release. This is what we're gonna do.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It is what we're doing. It did seem that it
- 9:57Speaker 1: builds on board by the point it see, So now
- 10:02Speaker 1: also we're hearing you know, you would think we'd know,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but we don't for sure. That the coaches are on
- 10:07Speaker 1: vacation this week. They're all gone, So when does this
- 10:10Speaker 1: interview process begin and who's doing the interviewing should have
- 10:14Speaker 1: begun Friday. That's the other issue that I have with this,
- 10:17Speaker 1: because this is what happens, and now that teams bow
- 10:20Speaker 1: out of the playoffs, the Chargers just fired their offensive coordinator.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Every offensive coordinator that's available is going to want to
- 10:26Speaker 1: coach Justin Herbert, so that your job is automatically number two,
- 10:29Speaker 1: if not lower, on the pecking order. And now when
- 10:33Speaker 1: you don't get it done in a timely manner, I
- 10:37Speaker 1: do worry about that because if you're Bill O'Brien and
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Chargers call and say, hey, we want to interview
- 10:42Speaker 1: you for the OC position, I'm coaching Justin Herbert over
- 10:45Speaker 1: Mac Jones. Like, if that's who I'm hitching my wagon too,
- 10:48Speaker 1: then I'm going to take the better player. I have
- 10:52Speaker 1: concerns that's a better option. But they're also it looks
- 10:56Speaker 1: like Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator job is going to be
- 10:58Speaker 1: open too. You know, it looks like they gonna fire left,
- 11:01Speaker 1: which now that's not more attractive than it because right
- 11:03Speaker 1: now they don't have a quarterback, right my guests would
- 11:06Speaker 1: be then they don't have one. You know, the Jets
- 11:08Speaker 1: have a vis So there's other teams that are gonna
- 11:10Speaker 1: be looking to fill these roles. Yeah kay, And I
- 11:13Speaker 1: think the charges one that that Evan brings up. I mean,
- 11:16Speaker 1: it's the best job in the NFL right now. You
- 11:18Speaker 1: get to play, and I mean, if you could probably succeeded.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, and Brandon Staley is like one fourth down
- 11:25Speaker 1: goal for a call next year, probably away from getting canned.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You know, like, I can't be I don't believe he
- 11:30Speaker 1: didn't gets us. Steph Georgovic like, if I'm Bill, find
- 11:34Speaker 1: your own way home son, You think Bill O'Brien goes
- 11:37Speaker 1: there as the OC. He's kind of waiting in the
- 11:39Speaker 1: wings if they had to make a move and points
- 11:42Speaker 1: so much more attractive. The rumors right now are that
- 11:44Speaker 1: they've been linked to Frank Reich, which is the same
- 11:46Speaker 1: thing I think for Frank Reich, who would be a
- 11:48Speaker 1: great higher for them. And then all of a sudden,
- 11:51Speaker 1: if Staley gets fired four weeks into the season, you
- 11:54Speaker 1: have Frank Reich on staff. Ready, it's one down attempt
- 11:57Speaker 1: it right, what are you doing? You're at your own
- 12:00Speaker 1: That's the only thing I know. We'll get to the
- 12:02Speaker 1: weekend games too. That's the only thing he didn't do.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And I got to be honest with you, there was
- 12:06Speaker 1: at least twice that I think he should have. Oh yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 1: so he has reversed course completely. He went from this
- 12:13Speaker 1: new age math coach that went for it on fourth
- 12:15Speaker 1: down all the time to this year, he's one of
- 12:18Speaker 1: the most conservative fourth down decision makers in the league.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And they probably lost the game because he's changed his stripes,
- 12:23Speaker 1: which and it wasn't so much field goals because I
- 12:25Speaker 1: think he kicked field goals properly, but I thought there
- 12:28Speaker 1: were some fourth down situations that he punted on. Yeah
- 12:30Speaker 1: that I think the way the game was going, they
- 12:32Speaker 1: probably would have conversed. You know, they had momentum. It's
- 12:35Speaker 1: just wild that somebody finally got to him and was like,
- 12:39Speaker 1: let's be less aggressive on fourth down, and then he
- 12:41Speaker 1: changes his stripes and then he loses the game. I
- 12:43Speaker 1: don't I didn't see the second game, would you agree.
- 12:45Speaker 1: My feeling though, was like, and this was in the
- 12:48Speaker 1: first half of that game, not to jump ahead, but
- 12:50Speaker 1: I felt like Herbert never really like so much happened
- 12:52Speaker 1: for him, that he never really got into rhythm himself
- 12:55Speaker 1: and never really found his game. In the first half.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You know, he was without Mike Williams and he lost
- 13:00Speaker 1: what's his face, um Carter in the middle of the game,
- 13:04Speaker 1: who's a little like kind of jack of all trades
- 13:06Speaker 1: for him, um, And it was weird because even when
- 13:11Speaker 1: they scored, they weren't on the fieldfold because they had
- 13:13Speaker 1: so many short fields. They went they went right in
- 13:15Speaker 1: and scored, and they just never really seemed like that
- 13:19Speaker 1: was one of those games that like Bill would talk
- 13:20Speaker 1: about like, obviously we weren't in control of the game
- 13:23Speaker 1: on the school board, but we felt like we were
- 13:25Speaker 1: playing better than it looked. Yeah, and I think they
- 13:28Speaker 1: were right. I mean, I give I give Trevor Lawrence
- 13:31Speaker 1: a lot of cry. I think got to get into
- 13:32Speaker 1: all that's an incredibly hard thing to do. I do
- 13:34Speaker 1: want to stick to the Patriots news and and kind
- 13:37Speaker 1: of you know, get it all out there before we
- 13:39Speaker 1: move on. So, well, it's the whole Garad Mayo situation. Um.
- 13:44Speaker 1: So it's he's definitely looked like he's staying. Um. The
- 13:48Speaker 1: question right now is in what capacity? You know, what
- 13:51Speaker 1: do you go? You know, I'm assuming it's going to
- 13:53Speaker 1: be assistant head coach, right, But that's the only thing
- 13:55Speaker 1: that makes right logic sense to me. I don't making
- 13:58Speaker 1: him defensive coordinator doesn't make sense to me because you've
- 14:01Speaker 1: got Steve there still. So it's hard, but I think
- 14:03Speaker 1: that that covers your thing, Fred of giving him some
- 14:06Speaker 1: of the experience. Of course, the Patriots want him to
- 14:08Speaker 1: get that experience and then probably stay here with it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: But at least from Gerard's point of view, he's probably
- 14:13Speaker 1: getting a nice pay bump and he's going to get
- 14:15Speaker 1: that experience of overseeing things and like you said, on
- 14:17Speaker 1: the pot opening his world perhaps to Girard, you know that.
- 14:22Speaker 1: That's my question is how much of this is a
- 14:25Speaker 1: move to give Girard what he wants to stay. But
- 14:28Speaker 1: how much do the Crafts have an eye an eye
- 14:30Speaker 1: toward the future with Gerard Mayo as as a potential replacement,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and how do you manage that and make that happen.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I just I just I just wonder though, like you know,
- 14:39Speaker 1: because if you're Mayo, you want things that are going
- 14:41Speaker 1: to help you down the road, right, So you're an
- 14:45Speaker 1: assistant coach to Bill Belichick, Like again, what are you doing?
- 14:49Speaker 1: What are you actually doing? You know? And I just wonder, like,
- 14:53Speaker 1: how does that help him become a head coach someday
- 14:56Speaker 1: because that's what he wants to do, you know. It's
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think the guy we got to get on the
- 15:01Speaker 1: phone and Marine Mats call up Dante because he was
- 15:03Speaker 1: the assistant head coach by title for a decade, right,
- 15:07Speaker 1: And my guesses is that you just have a hand
- 15:10Speaker 1: in a little bit of everything, right, where as opposed
- 15:13Speaker 1: to just your side of the ball, they're going to
- 15:14Speaker 1: give him actual responsibility to get off his own play.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I go back to the play calling too on defense,
- 15:20Speaker 1: because they're not taking play calling from Steve. They're not.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And if you don't call a side of the football,
- 15:27Speaker 1: it's just really hard to get a head coaching job
- 15:29Speaker 1: if you don't call a side, if you're not an
- 15:31Speaker 1: offensive guru, if you're not a defensive guru that's calling
- 15:34Speaker 1: the defense. What do you do, right? What do you do?
- 15:37Speaker 1: And there's so much and there's so much game plan
- 15:43Speaker 1: stuff during the week and practice and you know, coaching
- 15:45Speaker 1: up technique and I get all that, but I just
- 15:48Speaker 1: think that at the end of the day, every single
- 15:50Speaker 1: head coach in the league now has play calling experience
- 15:54Speaker 1: and is the guy on one side of the football.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And we saw that all weekend long. Every single day
- 16:00Speaker 1: head coach and that played this weekend it felt like
- 16:03Speaker 1: had a play sheet in their hand and it was
- 16:04Speaker 1: calling either offense or defense. So if you're Gerade Mayo,
- 16:07Speaker 1: what you still don't get to call the defense. I mean,
- 16:10Speaker 1: so I don't understand that is there has there ever
- 16:13Speaker 1: been a head coach that rose to that level who
- 16:17Speaker 1: really only his you know, uh resume was just a
- 16:21Speaker 1: leader and he wasn't like an expert on either side
- 16:25Speaker 1: of the ball. And it's just, you know, relies on
- 16:27Speaker 1: really strong owen offensive coordinat defensive coordinair and he's just
- 16:32Speaker 1: to be good that I would say Joe Judge filled
- 16:37Speaker 1: that criteria. He wasn't good, but but it got a
- 16:41Speaker 1: head coaching job by coaching special teams, right, But I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 1: you do have to call special teams. I hate that,
- 16:45Speaker 1: but you do have to call that. I mean, I
- 16:47Speaker 1: think the only other one that I can think of
- 16:48Speaker 1: at the top of my head is Dan Campbell, who
- 16:52Speaker 1: was the assistant head coach in New Orleans. But they
- 16:54Speaker 1: had Sean Payton calling the offense and they had Dennis
- 16:57Speaker 1: Allen calling the defense, so I don't think he was
- 16:59Speaker 1: calling it anything right in those games. So Harbaugh came
- 17:03Speaker 1: from special teams, but he could he he did, like
- 17:06Speaker 1: the Joe Judge thing. I think he had like one
- 17:08Speaker 1: year as like a Pocision coach or something. Well, this
- 17:11Speaker 1: floor might be an example, you know, um, but yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's tough. Like if I'm the owner or whoever is
- 17:18Speaker 1: making that decision the GM, like, what did you actually do?
- 17:22Speaker 1: It would be interesting to hear from Dante. Everyone brings
- 17:25Speaker 1: that up. But because I gotta be honest, I've always
- 17:28Speaker 1: kind of thought of assistant head coach is sort of
- 17:31Speaker 1: like a bone, like it's really nothing. Yeah, whatever the
- 17:35Speaker 1: more money, whatever the position coach is, that's what he like.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I always thought Dante was the offensive line coach, you know,
- 17:42Speaker 1: when he was the assistant head coach. I don't think
- 17:43Speaker 1: he was, like specially in a meeting with Bill. I
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know, I think it's sort of assumed that if
- 17:48Speaker 1: Bill's night and we saw Dante step in for Bill
- 17:51Speaker 1: when I was when Bill's dad passed away, I think, oh,
- 17:56Speaker 1: remember he kind of ran the press conferences and he
- 17:59Speaker 1: was the acting head coach Alexander Haig for a day. Yeah. Yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I like that's the way I look at assistant head coach.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I mean, maybe I'm wrong, and that's why I think. No,
- 18:07Speaker 1: I think that's spot on. I think it's I think
- 18:09Speaker 1: it's in case of emergency, and I think that maybe
- 18:13Speaker 1: he's in the room a little bit more often than
- 18:15Speaker 1: he would have been beforehand. So now if you're again,
- 18:18Speaker 1: if you're Gurad, you want some kind of assurance that
- 18:21Speaker 1: this is actually going to happen down the road. You know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm turning down, you know, an interview with a team
- 18:28Speaker 1: for a head coach because I'm I'm getting some assurance.
- 18:32Speaker 1: And if you're Bill Belichick, you've got this guy kind
- 18:34Speaker 1: of nipping at your heels. Does that make for an
- 18:36Speaker 1: awkward situation? Also, would you turn down a head coaching
- 18:41Speaker 1: job to potentially take a coordinator job just so you
- 18:45Speaker 1: can get more experience, because I mean, for example, you've
- 18:48Speaker 1: seen just so many black coaches get these head coaching
- 18:52Speaker 1: jobs and after one year they're fired because they weren't
- 18:54Speaker 1: ready for it. And So'm I looking at that panther's
- 18:56Speaker 1: job and I see that he turned it down. It
- 18:58Speaker 1: could be because he's like, hey, I haven't called a game,
- 19:01Speaker 1: have turned the job down? He turned the interview? Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 1: well yeah, I mean maybe he thought I shouldn't interviewet
- 19:06Speaker 1: until I get you know, maybe somebody. But he's come
- 19:09Speaker 1: out in several occasions saying I want to be a
- 19:12Speaker 1: head couch. Demca. Ryan's in San Francisco, said I need
- 19:15Speaker 1: another year, and he went back to the Niners and
- 19:18Speaker 1: coordinated their defense, and now his name is all over
- 19:20Speaker 1: the place, as it was would have been in the
- 19:22Speaker 1: last year's cycle as well, but he he bowed out
- 19:25Speaker 1: and said that I'm not ready, y I need more experienced.
- 19:28Speaker 1: And Mayo was interviewed for head coaching jobs. Yeah already, yeah,
- 19:31Speaker 1: just not this year, right, So it's something that they
- 19:33Speaker 1: gave him. Well, hopefully he gets something. I mean, even
- 19:37Speaker 1: if it's to Evan's point, it's like, I don't know
- 19:39Speaker 1: if you take the play calling away from um Steve,
- 19:42Speaker 1: but it's like, would you let Mayo potentially learn how
- 19:46Speaker 1: to call some plays? And I think he could probably
- 19:48Speaker 1: hop right in and do it. I would say, get
- 19:50Speaker 1: him experienced on the offensive side of the ball a
- 19:51Speaker 1: little bit, you know. I mean, if he comes back
- 19:53Speaker 1: and he's still the inside linebackers coach, then then it
- 19:56Speaker 1: just seems like it's ceremonial. But is there any way
- 19:58Speaker 1: to get him some I would want to something like
- 20:00Speaker 1: if after two years, if after two years I haven't
- 20:04Speaker 1: been named the head coach, I'm free to leave go
- 20:07Speaker 1: wherever I want. I don't need permission, you know, or
- 20:09Speaker 1: something something like, though he wouldn't need permission to go
- 20:13Speaker 1: meet the head coach or someone else. Well, I mean,
- 20:16Speaker 1: I'm sure they need permission. They told in the release,
- 20:18Speaker 1: they said a long term deal. No, I know that
- 20:21Speaker 1: he wants to be a head coach somewhere else. He
- 20:22Speaker 1: could he could go right now. Yeah, if you want.
- 20:25Speaker 1: If he turned down that that interview, but nothing contractually
- 20:29Speaker 1: is going to prevent him from being a head coach
- 20:31Speaker 1: somewhere else. I don't whatever the job is, I can
- 20:33Speaker 1: leave and go or anywhere I want for any reason
- 20:36Speaker 1: if after two years I'm not the head coach, you know,
- 20:40Speaker 1: I just feel like the whole and look, this is
- 20:43Speaker 1: a societal thing. It's not just the NFL, but the
- 20:45Speaker 1: whole interview process for coaching is so out of whack.
- 20:50Speaker 1: In Cleveland, they brought Brian Flores in for the first interview.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Pretty much every single sign pointed to Brian Flores getting
- 20:57Speaker 1: the job. In this morning, they announced Jim Schwartz is
- 20:59Speaker 1: the defensive corner. Let's see how many he's coorted every
- 21:02Speaker 1: defense in the league, and it's just this is his
- 21:04Speaker 1: fourth this is his fourth stint as a defensive coordinator
- 21:07Speaker 1: fourth stint as a DC. And then I also look
- 21:10Speaker 1: at the Patriots situation. We all think Bill O'Brien's the
- 21:13Speaker 1: best guy for the job. Tom Kerran's reporting that the
- 21:17Speaker 1: people in football ops thinks that Bill O'Brien's the best
- 21:19Speaker 1: guy for the job, but because of the Rooney rule,
- 21:23Speaker 1: they're gonna make a minority coach come in for a
- 21:27Speaker 1: sham interview like they're not if they have you know,
- 21:30Speaker 1: Pet Hamilton and Marcus Brady in here for an they're
- 21:32Speaker 1: not getting the job. Bill Brian's getting the job right,
- 21:36Speaker 1: And I just I feel bad for wasting those people's time. Yep.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I feel bad about it because and I think the
- 21:42Speaker 1: Rooney rule is trying to accomplish the right thing. It's
- 21:47Speaker 1: you know, if you look at it as experience interviewing
- 21:50Speaker 1: for that job, you know it's not a waste of time.
- 21:53Speaker 1: But I hear, yeah, sometimes though, it's like checking a
- 21:56Speaker 1: box when a team already knows like that they're gonna hire.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Oh look, that's what it is. Yeah. I just I
- 22:02Speaker 1: just feel like there's a at the end of the day,
- 22:04Speaker 1: the guy that gets the job is gonna it was predetermined,
- 22:07Speaker 1: Like the Browns knew that Jim Schwartz was getting that job.
- 22:11Speaker 1: They did. And how many times, and I think this
- 22:13Speaker 1: is a good honest question for like a GM or something.
- 22:16Speaker 1: How many times are you actually swayed in an interview
- 22:20Speaker 1: where you went in thinking this is our our guy
- 22:23Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden somebody blows you out
- 22:25Speaker 1: of the water and you completely pivot. It happened to me.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And uh, when I interviewed with you, No, that was
- 22:31Speaker 1: a long time. I appreciate you. No, there was a
- 22:33Speaker 1: recent hire that we made. Um. She came in and
- 22:37Speaker 1: blew us away and we ended up hiring her instead
- 22:39Speaker 1: of the other person that we had as number one Nicolette. Yeah. Yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 1: But I will say on the opposite side, I have
- 22:49Speaker 1: interviewed with a team that I will remain nameless, and
- 22:53Speaker 1: I felt like they wasted my time in the sense
- 22:56Speaker 1: of they brought me in like made it seem like,
- 22:59Speaker 1: you know, they were really interested in me. I felt
- 23:02Speaker 1: like I blew it away. I mean, the people I
- 23:03Speaker 1: talked to you said I did an incredible job, and
- 23:05Speaker 1: all along they were going to hire someone else. The
- 23:08Speaker 1: entire time, it was almost just like, Okay, we got
- 23:10Speaker 1: a minority person in for an interview. We did it, yea,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and but we're still going to go with this, and
- 23:15Speaker 1: it's so annoying happening to me three times when I
- 23:18Speaker 1: was working for you, you know. Stories. Yeah, I just
- 23:21Speaker 1: feel bad for because I got asked this question because
- 23:25Speaker 1: I didn't put a minority coach on my initial candidates list.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So somebody said, well, how are they gonna how are
- 23:31Speaker 1: they going to check off the Rooney rule box. It's
- 23:35Speaker 1: like the fact that I have to throw somebody out
- 23:36Speaker 1: there just to check a box is so so funny.
- 23:39Speaker 1: You said, I purposely didn't put a minority candidate in
- 23:42Speaker 1: my notes today for that exact reason, because I know
- 23:45Speaker 1: people are just gonna say, well, look at him, he's
- 23:47Speaker 1: being the good company boy. He's just like putting it
- 23:49Speaker 1: down there, so people won't know. That's up to the
- 23:52Speaker 1: Patriots to figure out who they're going to interview, not me.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I agree with you. I don't know what the answer
- 23:57Speaker 1: is to fix the process, because this happens in all
- 24:00Speaker 1: walks of life, that you have a candidate that you
- 24:02Speaker 1: like and that guy gets the job or that girl
- 24:04Speaker 1: gets the job, even if you have ten people in
- 24:07Speaker 1: for interviews. So it's not like it's just in the NFL,
- 24:10Speaker 1: But I just feel like they're just marching these these
- 24:12Speaker 1: minority coaches into these interviews just because, you know, but
- 24:15Speaker 1: they have On the other side of it, it's it's
- 24:17Speaker 1: probably good for teams to, you know, meet these people
- 24:20Speaker 1: and find out who they are, because you never know
- 24:22Speaker 1: three years from now, you know, you know, we had
- 24:25Speaker 1: that he was good. Let's bring him back, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 1: I mean, maybe familiarize yourself with with people, just like
- 24:31Speaker 1: a Gerad situation with Carolina for example, and did he
- 24:34Speaker 1: get intel out of Carolina that you're not actually getting
- 24:39Speaker 1: this job, right like we they have somebody that they
- 24:42Speaker 1: want that they're targeting, and they're bringing you in because
- 24:46Speaker 1: they have to, but you're not actually getting this job.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Same thing with Cleveland because Brian Flores took the interview
- 24:53Speaker 1: and got passed over by Jim Schwartz, who has failed
- 24:56Speaker 1: three different times as a defensive coordinator. Also, remember you
- 24:59Speaker 1: know Bill famously texted the wrong Brian about the Giants
- 25:04Speaker 1: job and he was actually telling what he meant to
- 25:08Speaker 1: be doing is telling Dable, yeah, you got the job.
- 25:10Speaker 1: I found out, But wasn't that the timing of that
- 25:13Speaker 1: before the interview process had been finished, so that was
- 25:17Speaker 1: in the bag, right you know, yeah, who you know,
- 25:20Speaker 1: whoever was interviewed after the date of that text. I
- 25:22Speaker 1: don't think there's an I don't think there's anything wrong
- 25:24Speaker 1: with having it in the bag. I don't think there's
- 25:26Speaker 1: anything wrong. But the Patriots want Bill O'Brien. Boy, it
- 25:29Speaker 1: just happens. Yeah, But because of the way the rules
- 25:32Speaker 1: are set up, you can't do that anymore, right, right,
- 25:34Speaker 1: Like that that's the problem. I think there's there's got
- 25:37Speaker 1: to be a better way to get minority candidates in
- 25:40Speaker 1: the in the building in like you know, in the game, right, yeah,
- 25:44Speaker 1: well instead of having a sham interview, Like is there
- 25:47Speaker 1: another process? It has to be a better way. Yeah,
- 25:50Speaker 1: you know, whether it be you know, what are the
- 25:52Speaker 1: It's almost like, you know, for colleges, so I'm trying
- 25:55Speaker 1: to think of someone who got fired recently. I can't
- 25:57Speaker 1: even think of one right now off the top of
- 25:58Speaker 1: my head. But for colleges, most times they have a
- 26:01Speaker 1: committee that brings in different people, so like it's it
- 26:05Speaker 1: could be biased, but it's less biased because you have
- 26:08Speaker 1: so many people involved in like inserting names, so then
- 26:12Speaker 1: you can decide from that group. Of names who you
- 26:14Speaker 1: actually want to bring in first of you, Yeah, what
- 26:16Speaker 1: is the team? What is the There's some kind of
- 26:20Speaker 1: an event that the NFL has now where the owners
- 26:24Speaker 1: are there and they and the teams. But I think
- 26:28Speaker 1: Steve Cargyle went to it with the Patriots and the
- 26:31Speaker 1: goal is to get um as many of the minority
- 26:35Speaker 1: decision makers for lack of you know, coaches, personnel, guys, whatever,
- 26:39Speaker 1: all in the room with all of the owners. And
- 26:42Speaker 1: now this way they all get to meet owners from
- 26:46Speaker 1: all the difference. It's not interviews, but you sort of
- 26:50Speaker 1: you get more familiar with the process and with the people.
- 26:53Speaker 1: That's how I mean, how did anybody ever get a job? Like?
- 26:57Speaker 1: It was the vast majority of people in this world
- 27:00Speaker 1: is it's but I'm not even talking about old boy.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It's it's connections. It's networking. Yeah, that that I mean
- 27:06Speaker 1: that that's word of mouth. How did I get this?
- 27:08Speaker 1: Like Brian Morey, I played baseball within college. Right Mike
- 27:12Speaker 1: Reese left and he said, hey, what do you think
- 27:15Speaker 1: That's how I came here? Right? Like, It's it's all
- 27:17Speaker 1: word of mouth and networks. So if you if you
- 27:19Speaker 1: get but if you're not get these people in the network.
- 27:24Speaker 1: And now to Tamara's point, the next time I have
- 27:27Speaker 1: a search committee, well maybe Marcus Brady is in that
- 27:31Speaker 1: group with Bill O'Brien more frequently because I know him.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I met this guy. He really impressed me. I like him.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Wasn't an interview, It wasn't a forced interview, which I
- 27:40Speaker 1: don't think is the way to get this done. I
- 27:42Speaker 1: just it's like, it's just hard because the NFL is
- 27:45Speaker 1: so small. I don't have the answer, but you know,
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, you kind of know everybody who's you know,
- 27:50Speaker 1: other industries. I mean, I you know, agree with the
- 27:52Speaker 1: bigger point that this exists everywhere, but I think two
- 27:55Speaker 1: with you know, just in New England, who are we
- 27:57Speaker 1: going to guys that we that we're here, you know so,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and most teams aren't willing to take chances. Yeah, you
- 28:03Speaker 1: know that's I mean, that's I mean, and that's why
- 28:05Speaker 1: everyone's like Bill O'Brien right here, we go right back
- 28:08Speaker 1: on that track. Well, because everybody here automatically thinks that
- 28:11Speaker 1: Bill won't go outside his comfort zone. That's why I
- 28:14Speaker 1: leaned to Bill o'bion, you won't all right. Five hundred
- 28:20Speaker 1: is the ACE ticket hot line web radio at Patriots
- 28:22Speaker 1: dot com is the email address the games this weekend?
- 28:25Speaker 1: Oh yes, yeah. I was particularly happy for Trevor Lawrence.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Even when he fell behind. I knew he was going
- 28:33Speaker 1: to come back and make it close. You watch the
- 28:34Speaker 1: whole thing I did. Wait wait, wait, wa wait you
- 28:36Speaker 1: knew that? Oh yeah, you knew it? Absolutely, asked my wife,
- 28:39Speaker 1: I said, he's going to come back. Don't work. I
- 28:41Speaker 1: will say that there are just not many players that
- 28:44Speaker 1: I think mentally can overcome throwing that many interceptions and
- 28:48Speaker 1: a half being down like that. Yes, just mentally, especially
- 28:54Speaker 1: you know, in a in a guy who this is
- 28:56Speaker 1: his first playoffs, this was his first time in the
- 28:59Speaker 1: wild card game, like just he could have easily been like, well,
- 29:03Speaker 1: we made it to the playoffs. You know, that's an
- 29:06Speaker 1: accomplishment in itself. Yeah, well we'll try to get Sandy. Sandy.
- 29:10Speaker 1: The Chargers helped a little, h a lot. But but yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 1: you're right to have the mindset to just come out
- 29:17Speaker 1: and keep keep working at it, you know. And I
- 29:19Speaker 1: guess that first year helped him. You know what he
- 29:23Speaker 1: went through with urban Meyer and all that crap. You know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: it can't get worse than that, and that helped him.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I think, um, you know, in this league, and so
- 29:33Speaker 1: I was glad that, you know, they advanced. I don't
- 29:35Speaker 1: think they're going to beat the Bills, but you know,
- 29:38Speaker 1: I was wherever they play, they're the fourth seed of
- 29:42Speaker 1: the remaining four in the AFC, and but I'm happy
- 29:45Speaker 1: that he got through that. Yeah, I mean, I mean,
- 29:48Speaker 1: just bigger points to take away from me was just
- 29:50Speaker 1: generally from the weekend, was like, there are definitely three
- 29:53Speaker 1: top AFC teams, but I don't see why the Patriots
- 29:55Speaker 1: can't get back into this, you know, lower echelon mix
- 29:58Speaker 1: with the Chargers and the Ravens and but but you know,
- 30:02Speaker 1: it's just I think you look in the off season,
- 30:04Speaker 1: it seemed like, God, the AFC is so stacked, and
- 30:06Speaker 1: then when you really boil it down to the end
- 30:07Speaker 1: of the year and you get to the playoffs, and
- 30:09Speaker 1: you see, all right, like, yeah, they're they're outside, but
- 30:12Speaker 1: they're not that far off when it's Mahomes versus Burrow
- 30:15Speaker 1: in the championship game. But it's three teams. But I
- 30:19Speaker 1: would have liked to play. See. I just looked at it,
- 30:21Speaker 1: and I'm a little not surprisingly, I looked at it
- 30:24Speaker 1: a little bit less optimistically than Mike. I look at
- 30:27Speaker 1: some of those, like, you know, like Miami goes up
- 30:30Speaker 1: to Buffalo and they had every opportunity to win the game. Now,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I thought they were thoroughly all played in the game,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and the turnovers kept them in it. But you know,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I think the Bills did a lot of things to
- 30:40Speaker 1: try to keep you in the game too, when you
- 30:41Speaker 1: couldn't stay in the game. Yeah, and that's a lower
- 30:44Speaker 1: echelon team with a third string rookie quarterback playing like
- 30:48Speaker 1: that's not I'm not comparing them to since the Kansas
- 30:50Speaker 1: City and Buffalo, I'm comparing them to Miami. Miami found
- 30:53Speaker 1: a way to play the Bills three times, nose to nose, yep,
- 30:57Speaker 1: Like it helps when the quarterback turns it over four times. No,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I get it, I get it. There were there were
- 31:03Speaker 1: mistakes made, you know, But I think the Bills made
- 31:07Speaker 1: a lot of mistakes against the Patriots, and the Patriots
- 31:09Speaker 1: couldn't do anything about it. I look at it as
- 31:13Speaker 1: a positive, and then I also have a negative on
- 31:16Speaker 1: it as well. But I think positively Doug Peterson to
- 31:19Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence and Brian Dable to Daniel Jones, and like
- 31:23Speaker 1: these coaches were able to obviously what's going on in
- 31:26Speaker 1: San Francisco, like these coaches are able to make up
- 31:30Speaker 1: for it. But I think the negative is is that
- 31:33Speaker 1: you have to have one or the other. You either
- 31:35Speaker 1: have to have great coaching. You'd have to have great coaching,
- 31:38Speaker 1: or you have to have great talent. But if you
- 31:41Speaker 1: the Patriots right now, I feel like have neither and
- 31:44Speaker 1: that's not a good place to be. And now if
- 31:45Speaker 1: they fix off it's a coordinator, maybe they can get
- 31:47Speaker 1: back to that level of a Dable with Daniel Jones
- 31:50Speaker 1: type of path. But you can't be a team with neither.
- 31:54Speaker 1: But you can be a team with one or the
- 31:56Speaker 1: other and you can still win playoff games with great
- 31:59Speaker 1: coaching or great play. And I think that this weekend
- 32:02Speaker 1: you saw that all across the league, and then you
- 32:04Speaker 1: also saw coaches below games for their teams. I think
- 32:08Speaker 1: that I'm a big Mike McDaniel guy. I loved him
- 32:11Speaker 1: all season long what he did on against the buff
- 32:15Speaker 1: the Bills on fourth down and he can't get the
- 32:17Speaker 1: play in and they have all sorts of procedural issues.
- 32:19Speaker 1: They're burning timeouts in the fourth quarter because they can't
- 32:22Speaker 1: get plays in and things like that. That's that's terrible.
- 32:25Speaker 1: I mean it's terrible coaching the Ravens too. I'm like,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you literally had a chance in the final two minutes
- 32:30Speaker 1: to make this game something different than what it was.
- 32:33Speaker 1: And I just felt like they didn't know what they
- 32:34Speaker 1: were doing. Why are you still huddling up? The clock
- 32:36Speaker 1: is rolling? Are you doing That's what they wanted to do. Yeah,
- 32:39Speaker 1: they wanted to score in the last second, right, it
- 32:41Speaker 1: was I think a gross miscalculation, especially for the Ravens,
- 32:45Speaker 1: a team that wants to run the ball. Yeah, by
- 32:47Speaker 1: letting the clock run, you're basically taking the runaway from you. Like,
- 32:50Speaker 1: you can't ask Tyler Huntley yes to throw eight passes
- 32:53Speaker 1: in the last minute, in twenty seconds of the game.
- 32:55Speaker 1: It's not what he does. So I think by not
- 32:58Speaker 1: taking those timeouts now, but that's exactly what they weren't confused.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I'm like, Miami, they weren't unprepared. I just think that
- 33:04Speaker 1: they had a bad plan, right, you have that, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: I thought that plan would have worked if like Lamar
- 33:08Speaker 1: was in. But like that second half for Staley and
- 33:12Speaker 1: the Chargers, I can't believe he kept his job. I
- 33:15Speaker 1: can't believe it. They have told you, I would have
- 33:17Speaker 1: made him be like Tom Cruise in all the right moves. Steph, Georgevitch,
- 33:20Speaker 1: You're not a lot to go back on the bus
- 33:22Speaker 1: you walk home from Walnut Heights twenty seven. He should
- 33:25Speaker 1: have had to get his own flight. You run the
- 33:28Speaker 1: ball nine times in the second half of twenty seven
- 33:31Speaker 1: to nothing. Yeah, and your defense completely gets outplayed and
- 33:35Speaker 1: you never you'd never adjust defensively. That's supposed to be
- 33:38Speaker 1: your side of the football. I don't. I just don't know.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I don't know what they see in the coach. I don't.
- 33:44Speaker 1: And that's such a great roster in such a great
- 33:47Speaker 1: quarterback that if you just drop and if like if
- 33:50Speaker 1: Sean Payton took that job, then then they they'd have
- 33:53Speaker 1: a chance to win a Super Bowl. I think they
- 33:55Speaker 1: have to find a way to get their personnel active.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I mean, I know that's the common thing. It's just
- 34:02Speaker 1: it's a loaded roster. But when they play the games,
- 34:05Speaker 1: they usually don't have a loaded roster. I mean it's
- 34:08Speaker 1: Josh Palmer and Keenan Allen in Austin Eckler. I mean,
- 34:12Speaker 1: I think Gerald Edward is fine, He's okay. I mean
- 34:16Speaker 1: we talked about Carter too, right, I mean he's like
- 34:18Speaker 1: the scrap heap, Yeah, I mean that's like the third
- 34:20Speaker 1: receiver in that game was DeAndre Carter. You know, you
- 34:24Speaker 1: know in the secondary, they lose Mike Davis and you know,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and that was also a big injury, you know, one
- 34:29Speaker 1: of the starts. So now you're out, you're two starting corners.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I don't I think they're good. I have a concern.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I love Justin Herbert and I've said this a million times.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I love, love, love his skill. I just don't know
- 34:43Speaker 1: if he's got that loser thing in him that he
- 34:45Speaker 1: can't get knocked out. There's no way that any quarterback
- 34:49Speaker 1: should have lost that game. I don't care if you
- 34:51Speaker 1: run eight plays, eight runs, twenty five runs, like, all
- 34:56Speaker 1: you need to do is get like two first downs
- 34:58Speaker 1: and the game is over. And they couldn't do it.
- 35:00Speaker 1: That's why I think that the right and they're gonna
- 35:02Speaker 1: hire an offensive coordination. Maybe it's Frank Reich and maybe
- 35:07Speaker 1: he gets it out of him, but I think that
- 35:09Speaker 1: he's the type of guy that you need to have
- 35:11Speaker 1: the right coach to pair with to get that killer
- 35:14Speaker 1: instinct out of him. Because this year he was thirty
- 35:17Speaker 1: first in the league in air yards. He's got one
- 35:20Speaker 1: of the best arms in the league, and they're thinking
- 35:21Speaker 1: and dunking down the field. And if you don't coach
- 35:24Speaker 1: it in him to be more aggressive, then then he
- 35:27Speaker 1: clearly is is cool with that right of just throwing
- 35:30Speaker 1: five yard passes. They got Josh Allen and he's playing
- 35:33Speaker 1: like Alex Smith like that. You just can't have that.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I think part of that was with all the injuries
- 35:38Speaker 1: that they had, both in the receiving quarters. They were
- 35:41Speaker 1: without Allen and Williams for a large chunk of the year,
- 35:44Speaker 1: and then Rashawn Slater goes down like they're gonna find
- 35:47Speaker 1: a way because they're gonna waste a window because they
- 35:50Speaker 1: are good enough to be a you know, a second
- 35:52Speaker 1: weekend playoff team. Minimize AFC, NFC. Forget about the two
- 35:56Speaker 1: teams that had buys, who were the two strongest team
- 36:00Speaker 1: that came out of this weekend San Francisco, they're wagon
- 36:05Speaker 1: even with Bertie. You believe it. I believe in Kyle
- 36:09Speaker 1: and that he was really shaky early in that game,
- 36:11Speaker 1: but then he settled down and he was fine. At me. Yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 1: I mean, I wish I could say the Bills with
- 36:15Speaker 1: the Bengals, but you know, I don't think that they
- 36:17Speaker 1: played as well as you thought they were going to play.
- 36:20Speaker 1: The Bengals have some issues up front. Yeah, I think
- 36:22Speaker 1: the Bills, like for the past two weeks, what six toneovers?
- 36:25Speaker 1: I might be missing one. But they're lucky they've played
- 36:27Speaker 1: two bad teams in a row, because if they didn't,
- 36:29Speaker 1: I'm sorry sorry, if they didn't. Miami with Tua is
- 36:33Speaker 1: not bad. But I think that if they played somebody
- 36:36Speaker 1: else the past two weeks, they wouldn't have want. Yeah,
- 36:38Speaker 1: they got lucky. They come out with three turnovers again
- 36:41Speaker 1: unless unless not gonna win, unless they're suffering from playing
- 36:44Speaker 1: down to their competition. That film, for Josh Allen is brutal.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's bad. I just think they look exhausted. He just
- 36:50Speaker 1: has taken vertical shots with guys underneath the defense just
- 36:53Speaker 1: wide open, and they're just baiting him into into go
- 36:57Speaker 1: balls on the outside, and he's just sure, let's do this,
- 37:01Speaker 1: and I'm gonna hit thirty percent of them, Like so
- 37:03Speaker 1: you know how good they are. Everything that everybody is
- 37:06Speaker 1: saying is exactly true. Five hundred plush yards of offense
- 37:09Speaker 1: and thirty four points oh yeah. I mean, that's how
- 37:12Speaker 1: good they are. They can play like utter crap and
- 37:15Speaker 1: still do that right, And they did play like crap,
- 37:17Speaker 1: no mistake. I think it's a big difference with Dable
- 37:20Speaker 1: and Dorsey, right because Dable was able to get him
- 37:23Speaker 1: to be more efficient, and that's how they tore up
- 37:25Speaker 1: the Patriots last year, was that he was willing to
- 37:28Speaker 1: take the profits underneath the defense and thinking dunk a
- 37:31Speaker 1: little bit and not have to go for the home
- 37:33Speaker 1: run on every single play against them. Against the Dolphins,
- 37:36Speaker 1: he was back to just I'm just gonna make a
- 37:38Speaker 1: fifty yard bomb happen on it. Even the second like
- 37:40Speaker 1: the first game against the Patriots, I thought they largely
- 37:43Speaker 1: stayed with what Dable did. It was a lot of
- 37:45Speaker 1: dumps over the middle to like Shingle, checked outs to
- 37:48Speaker 1: even shorter throws to digs Um, you know, and that worked.
- 37:52Speaker 1: And then the second game, the one in Buffalo in
- 37:54Speaker 1: the last game of the season, I thought it was
- 37:55Speaker 1: a little bit more what Evan's talking about. And you know,
- 37:58Speaker 1: he hit them, you know, so that you know, those
- 38:00Speaker 1: are the two backbreaking touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But
- 38:04Speaker 1: I mean, let's face it, I don't care how good
- 38:06Speaker 1: you are. Those aren't always the high percentage plays. Yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 1: and of course, uh for me at least we had
- 38:11Speaker 1: the disappointing game last night with Brady. Is that his
- 38:16Speaker 1: last game with them? Yes? No? In the NFL? No,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I don't think so. I don't think. I think it
- 38:22Speaker 1: should be. I think, but he's not gonna you know,
- 38:25Speaker 1: now that he's divorced. No, I'm serious, it's got nothing
- 38:29Speaker 1: for the season. I said this would be his last year,
- 38:32Speaker 1: and I think if he was still married it would be.
- 38:34Speaker 1: But now, I mean single Brady in one year in
- 38:36Speaker 1: Vegas playing for the Raiders. That sounds like that. But
- 38:39Speaker 1: what does that sound like? Yeah, I mean that he
- 38:42Speaker 1: live in a hotel. I don't think single Brady would have.
- 38:47Speaker 1: I mean that makes a lot of sense him going
- 38:49Speaker 1: to Vegas, going with Josh McDaniels, all those tools that
- 38:52Speaker 1: are already there, um doing a residency, you know, I
- 38:56Speaker 1: think I think it makes you know, like before everyone
- 39:00Speaker 1: was saying, oh, forty nine ers, but are they gonna
- 39:02Speaker 1: stick with Like, let's say this guy makes a run.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Let's also never forget about Trey Lance. Well go get
- 39:07Speaker 1: Purty because I heard ivn't doing a whole thing this
- 39:09Speaker 1: morning with Chris about about Purdy and and and Zappy
- 39:12Speaker 1: and the same. It's ridiculous he does. He thinks, so Purty,
- 39:19Speaker 1: fifty percent of his throws were off play action, seventy
- 39:25Speaker 1: something percent of his yards were yak right, Like he
- 39:28Speaker 1: throws a ten yard crosser to Deebo Samuel and he
- 39:30Speaker 1: takes its seventy five yards of the house. Who I
- 39:34Speaker 1: know what, I gotta be honest with you, and I'm
- 39:37Speaker 1: not talking about I don't think Purty played all that well.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I watched that whole game and he was shaking. When
- 39:43Speaker 1: a quarterbacks receivers have a lot of yak Is that
- 39:46Speaker 1: also an indication that he's very accurate hitting him? And
- 39:48Speaker 1: there was two unbelievable blocks, one by Kittle and one
- 39:50Speaker 1: by Ayuk. I sent a text I sent to text
- 39:54Speaker 1: him like, I go, is even a better block the
- 39:57Speaker 1: forty nine ers. They they hit three shop plays in
- 40:00Speaker 1: that game on the same concept. They ran the same
- 40:04Speaker 1: play three times and Seattle is in cover three all
- 40:07Speaker 1: three times and got beat all three times. Like, I'm sorry.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I think that he's got some skill. He's clearly doing
- 40:13Speaker 1: enough to not get in the way of that offense.
- 40:16Speaker 1: But we don't need to give every quarterback that the
- 40:20Speaker 1: moment isn't too big for him. We don't have to
- 40:21Speaker 1: get like that's the bottom line, like that's the baseline
- 40:24Speaker 1: of it. And we we we crack underlying the Green
- 40:29Speaker 1: Bay game, all the moment's not too big for him. Cool,
- 40:33Speaker 1: but hold on, the jury is still out. But if
- 40:35Speaker 1: he does make a run, he'll have done it against
- 40:37Speaker 1: the best teams in his conference. And I think that
- 40:40Speaker 1: means but is it him or the team is? The
- 40:43Speaker 1: team is extremely talented, It's unbelievable, and Kyle Shanahan is
- 40:47Speaker 1: the best offensive coach in the league besides maybe Andy Reid.
- 40:50Speaker 1: But I'm gonna give it right now to Kyle Shanahan.
- 40:53Speaker 1: And he is making throws that that mac that zappy
- 40:58Speaker 1: that you know sky Tyler Thompson could could could make.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Speaking of which, the moment wasn't too big for Skylett Thompson,
- 41:05Speaker 1: But we don't talk about that because he lost. Right,
- 41:08Speaker 1: he didn't play that bad. I mean, I know the
- 41:09Speaker 1: numbers are terrible, but I don't think you've got any help.
- 41:13Speaker 1: It's this this argument of poise, like, oh he was
- 41:16Speaker 1: poised well, when there's when he's got a pocket and
- 41:19Speaker 1: he's got receivers that are open, and then the receivers
- 41:21Speaker 1: take the ball and do things with it, Like, it's
- 41:23Speaker 1: probably pretty easy to look poised, like, but do you
- 41:26Speaker 1: think that there's anything to take that Other NFL teams
- 41:28Speaker 1: are taken from this? And I know that the forty
- 41:30Speaker 1: nine ers are completely unique in the fact that they
- 41:32Speaker 1: have Kyle Shanahan, who everyone respects as a coordinator. You've
- 41:34Speaker 1: got Trent Williams, You've got Debo, You've Kittle, I mean,
- 41:38Speaker 1: go right around. But do you think this says anything
- 41:40Speaker 1: to NFL teams that are like, it's so hard to
- 41:42Speaker 1: find the one quarterback? Do we do? We just put
- 41:44Speaker 1: everything into the weapons. So that's what I would just
- 41:47Speaker 1: get up. I think that to me, And I've heard
- 41:48Speaker 1: this a lot. What's argument, what's easier finding the quarterback
- 41:52Speaker 1: or building a rot Like I'm sorry, hard right, it's
- 41:55Speaker 1: really hard to build a roster as talented as the
- 41:58Speaker 1: Niners are right now, and they've lost a number of
- 42:00Speaker 1: guys on the defensive side of the ball, and it
- 42:02Speaker 1: doesn't matter because they're just so good. And yeah, you
- 42:07Speaker 1: can I've said this a million times. If I have
- 42:09Speaker 1: all of those things. Yeah, I'm fine with Mac Jones. Yep.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Mac Jones would be fine in San Francisco because they're
- 42:15Speaker 1: because they're rock solid everywhere. Yeah, And I don't think
- 42:19Speaker 1: that's easy to do. No. I also think that maybe
- 42:23Speaker 1: even arguably just as hard as Kyle Shanahan, because that
- 42:26Speaker 1: guy can really coach. Yeah, and so do you have
- 42:28Speaker 1: to have both? It's you have to have a talented
- 42:30Speaker 1: roster around the quarterback and you have to have a
- 42:32Speaker 1: guy that can that can scheme it up like Kyle
- 42:34Speaker 1: Shanahan does. So I don't know me over the top
- 42:38Speaker 1: with McCaffrey where it's like they're just all in on
- 42:40Speaker 1: this plan of getting as many elite weapons as they can. Um.
- 42:43Speaker 1: But yeah, I love Paul's point. I mean it's just
- 42:45Speaker 1: it's it's hard to find Trent Williams, you know, Like
- 42:48Speaker 1: I just take that one piece of it. They have
- 42:50Speaker 1: a really good offensive line, they have a really good defense,
- 42:52Speaker 1: they have really good skill guys, they have a really
- 42:55Speaker 1: good running game. I'll yeah, if I have everything at
- 42:58Speaker 1: a really high level, I don't probably have to have
- 43:02Speaker 1: the best quarterback now. And that's what was with Mac
- 43:04Speaker 1: Jones Alabama. He had everything perfect. He had great rob receivers,
- 43:07Speaker 1: great offensive line, great coach, like everything was handed to him. Yeah,

- 52:39Speaker 1: great moments in history, you're not really that's like Paul,
- 52:44Speaker 1: you know, slamming down the D'Angelo sub because he didn't
- 52:47Speaker 1: like that. You didn't. It's it's all performative. It's performative.
- 52:53Speaker 1: It didn't happen. It happens quality turkey right there. It was.
- 52:57Speaker 1: It was so funny. I mean, he says it doesn't
- 52:59Speaker 1: have it it happened. Oh no, no, that didn't have
- 53:02Speaker 1: I didn't slam any First of all, I wouldn't do
- 53:04Speaker 1: we were all sitting at the table. I wouldn't do that.
- 53:06Speaker 1: He comes walking up because we're waiting for the food
- 53:08Speaker 1: to be served, you know, he comes walking up, sits
- 53:11Speaker 1: down and puts the puts the sandwich in the middle
- 53:14Speaker 1: of the table. If he wants to say that, I
- 53:17Speaker 1: walked through the press box with attitude to let everybody know, Yeah, yeah,
- 53:22Speaker 1: that's I would absolutely I'd cop to that. Yeah, put
- 53:26Speaker 1: it down. And then when you sat down, what did
- 53:28Speaker 1: you do? I just put the I put my sandwich
- 53:30Speaker 1: down and sat down and ate it. I wouldn't do that.
- 53:31Speaker 1: So you weren't trying to make a statement. It is
- 53:33Speaker 1: oh no, no, no, no, I necessarily say I wasn't
- 53:35Speaker 1: making a state right in the middle. I had one
- 53:37Speaker 1: too many pieces of chicken with a bone in it.
- 53:40Speaker 1: He put right in the It was. It was, and
- 53:43Speaker 1: everybody was pissed. But I was the only one that
- 53:44Speaker 1: did anything about it. And we were cracking up, like
- 53:47Speaker 1: like we were all laughing because we knew what he
- 53:49Speaker 1: was doing. It's like I've had it. I literally I
- 53:52Speaker 1: literally went to the line, turned and said, I can't
- 53:54Speaker 1: do this again. I'm going I'm going to Deangelos and
- 53:57Speaker 1: I went to get a sub and I was back
- 53:59Speaker 1: in ten minutes and they would die. Fred's right, they
- 54:01Speaker 1: would die in last night. That might be beyond stake
- 54:03Speaker 1: tips next week. That's another great moment from all right
- 54:08Speaker 1: back here on Patriots on Filter at eight five five
- 54:10Speaker 1: five Ticket Hutline Web Radio at Patriots dot com, continuing
- 54:15Speaker 1: our discussion with the weekends happenings around the NFL. The
- 54:20Speaker 1: Patriots released Thursday Night and what will happen going forward? Uh,
- 54:25Speaker 1: let's go to the phones. People patiently waiting there. Jonas
- 54:28Speaker 1: is in Kingston. What's up? Jonas? Hey? Fred? Hey at one.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Thank you guys for all the stuff this year. Um,
- 54:39Speaker 1: it's been fantastic. Thank you adding Evan, Um, great great edition,
- 54:46Speaker 1: you know, thank you. Yeah, no, it's been really good,
- 54:53Speaker 1: really helpful. Uma. Uh uh sorry if I sound a
- 54:59Speaker 1: little them. Uh my my my father in law died
- 55:02Speaker 1: last week. Oh geez, sorry about that. No, no, that's fine. Um,
- 55:08Speaker 1: But what I wanted to express you guys was, uh,
- 55:15Speaker 1: it's very funny. Super article around his death. Um. Somebody
- 55:23Speaker 1: who employed him after his major career described him as
- 55:28Speaker 1: the Tom Brady of of his whatever you know, you
- 55:36Speaker 1: know career, which would have made my father in law
- 55:40Speaker 1: very uh would have made him, would have made him
- 55:45Speaker 1: very uh happy or whatever, because my father in law
- 55:52Speaker 1: hated Tom Brady whole story, but he hated that he left.
- 56:00Speaker 1: He's like, du no, you know he hated. Okays like
- 56:08Speaker 1: can't I can't handle it, Evan, can't have another one.
- 56:11Speaker 1: We appreciate um, we appreciate you appreciating us. So oh no, no,
- 56:16Speaker 1: no again. You guys have done a great job this year,
- 56:19Speaker 1: the last two or three years. This has been a
- 56:21Speaker 1: tough time, all right for tenty nineteen, things seem to
- 56:30Speaker 1: really pick up. Let's go to Rashad in Baltimore. What's up, Rashad? Hey,
- 56:35Speaker 1: what's up? What's up? I got I got a few
- 56:39Speaker 1: things about the about the playoffs, but I got I
- 56:41Speaker 1: got a question for Evan about about the draft. But my, my,
- 56:46Speaker 1: my take on the playoffs this weekend the forty nine is,
- 56:49Speaker 1: I feel like the system just is easier to any quarterback,
- 56:53Speaker 1: Like if you put Mac Jones in a system, he
- 56:56Speaker 1: would do good, if not better than Purdy and uh game.
- 57:03Speaker 1: I'm with spread on that. Like I knew the charges
- 57:06Speaker 1: gonna choke because that's what they've done all my life
- 57:09Speaker 1: pretty much. They've always you know, been let they fans down.
- 57:13Speaker 1: So I knew in some way they the Jay Watson
- 57:15Speaker 1: going to come back. And my thing, okay, having my
- 57:20Speaker 1: question for you is um, all right, so the Patriots
- 57:24Speaker 1: at pick fourteen last say they going best player available?
- 57:28Speaker 1: All right? So you have Paris Johnson, you have Nolan Smith,
- 57:34Speaker 1: and you have Jordan Addison. Who would you take? And
- 57:40Speaker 1: the one thing I will say about the draft, I
- 57:43Speaker 1: don't like that the jet literally one spot ahead of us. Yeah,
- 57:47Speaker 1: I don't like that. Yet. Where I'm at with with
- 57:50Speaker 1: the draft now that I'm starting to really get into
- 57:52Speaker 1: this is I'm ready to be hurt again, deuce like
- 57:53Speaker 1: I'm ready for them to take cold strange two point
- 57:56Speaker 1: er and break my heart. So I think all the
- 58:00Speaker 1: name brands that we throw out there at fourteen is
- 58:02Speaker 1: not going to end up being who the guy is.
- 58:04Speaker 1: And uh, but out of to answer your question, I
- 58:07Speaker 1: think a lot of it depends on what they do
- 58:09Speaker 1: in free agency, because I think that there's a good
- 58:13Speaker 1: chance that looking at this free agent market and the
- 58:15Speaker 1: fact that they're going to have some money to spend,
- 58:17Speaker 1: that they might throw some money at tackle, which might
- 58:19Speaker 1: take that off the board in the first round. So
- 58:22Speaker 1: I don't know where they're going um with that position,
- 58:25Speaker 1: but they might go that way. I like Paris Johnson,
- 58:28Speaker 1: I like Broderick Jones from Georgia. Both those guys can
- 58:30Speaker 1: play the tackle. From Northwestern I think is a good
- 58:33Speaker 1: prospect as well. Yeah, I think all those guys are areas.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Do you think as a free agent tackle, do you
- 58:41Speaker 1: think Michael Michael McGlinchey, I think that's his name. Do
- 58:44Speaker 1: you think that's that's a good target. Yeah. I just
- 58:48Speaker 1: think mcglinchy. If just looking at their track record of
- 58:52Speaker 1: of who the guys that they spend money on in
- 58:54Speaker 1: free agency, he reminds me a lot of Stefan Gilmour
- 58:57Speaker 1: and that they couldn't get him in the draft because
- 58:59Speaker 1: he went and overall in the draft that he was
- 59:02Speaker 1: picked in. So maybe a guy that they graded really
- 59:04Speaker 1: highly coming out of Notre Dame, but they didn't ever
- 59:06Speaker 1: have a chance to pick him. Now he's at UFA,
- 59:09Speaker 1: they're able to get their hands on him and they
- 59:11Speaker 1: pay him a contract because they think that here he's
- 59:14Speaker 1: going to be even better than he was in an
- 59:16Speaker 1: outside zone system in San Francisco. So I love that
- 59:19Speaker 1: idea because I think you pay him and then right
- 59:21Speaker 1: tackles set like you got a right tackle and you
- 59:23Speaker 1: just you go from there. Thanks for sure. But yeah,
- 59:25Speaker 1: I like Jordan Addison too from USC the receiver, more
- 59:29Speaker 1: of that separation, quickness, route running and not like a
- 59:33Speaker 1: Quentin Johnston from TCU, who's who's like a big bodied guy.
- 59:36Speaker 1: So I like Addison the lock rights in. Uh he's
- 59:39Speaker 1: from Everett. Oh okay, he's writing at web radio at
- 59:43Speaker 1: pictures dot com. He says, that got my free first
- 59:45Speaker 1: alert the other day. There you go. All I could
- 59:48Speaker 1: picture was you three guys throwing on your Patriot blue
- 59:51Speaker 1: flashing light on your hoods, Fred blowing red lights, Mike
- 59:54Speaker 1: whipping around rotaries, and Paul throwing down his chicken cutlet
- 59:58Speaker 1: sub from the Plosse's say the good thing. I gotta
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: go there. There's been an alert. That's what makes you
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: guys the original broadcast at number one. Keep up the
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: great work so you can get those uh notices. Why
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I have alerts and I gotta feel them. We'll have
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: a few more. You go to stats dot com slash
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: audio slash alerts and you'll be notified whenever we have
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: an emergency podcast. So do you think if if we
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: get word that they interviewed a candidate on like a
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Wednesday emergency podcast or no, uh, just the depth they
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: just interviewed somebody. No, I agree, yeah, no, have to
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: be higher. I mean that hopefully we'll get word of
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: it and we'll put it out there as a report
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and all that stuff, so you'll know about it on
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: PAGs dot com. But I don't think that rises to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the level. I was waiting for Paul to say we
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: need to have a Wednesday shown on a Wednesday all
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: the time. I would rather have it, you know, twelve
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: to two. But every day he doesn't want to do it.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: He's the boss. Yeah, sometimes you just have to, you know,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: let Matt Patricia make the place not talk, just not
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: talk for two hours on Wednesday, and then thank him after.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Benn in Liverpool says pretty simple question was or has
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Joe Judge been giving enough blame for how the team
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: performed this year? All the attention seemed to go to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Mac and more so on Patricia. Dare I say it,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: even Bill, but Joe Judge, who has no time for Christmas,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: seemed to skate along until the end of the season.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: With hindsight looking at how well the Giants and Daniel
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Jones had done this year, was the bigger mistake hiring
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Joe Judge as QB coach or Patricia as OCT Christmas Yeah, Patricia,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I don't. I mean I didn't like either one of them,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: but there's only one guy that was calling the place. Yeah, right,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: quarterbacks coach? Just throw them all on the play. Like,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I don't think it matters how much we divvy up
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: to each guy, to be honest with you, but if
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: you let's play though, if you were to divvy it
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: up and you would say, that's a quarter back coach issue, like,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: what would be an example of something that's a quarterback coach?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Here's you know, usually a strong OC is also the
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: quarterbacks coach. You know, a real So this is you know,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I'm not saying rare, but you know it's not typical.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: So if you had a really good quarterbacks coach and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: you saw the OC not calling good plays, would that
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: quarterback coach be more at odds with the OC to say, hey,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you're screwing up the quarterback here, and did that happen?
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Did that? Maybe? I don't know, you know, like I
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: think they were united against Mac, so then yeah, so
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I would I would look at it more if if
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I thought that Mac Jones was showing signs of getting
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: really sloppy, like his mechanics were all out of whack
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: and he's doing you know, I would say, wow, you know,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: his quarterback coach tightening some of these things up. Pocket awareness, Yeah,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: he's loose with the ball, like I don't really think
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: he's been. I don't think there was a huge difference
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: in that regard to me from last year to this year.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm overlooking it, but to me,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: it was more about the play designs and the offense itself,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: and I and Judge deserves blame for that too. Yeah,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: but I think Patricia gets the Lions here because he
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: called the plays and Bill gets you know, Bill set
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: at the beginning of the year. If it doesn't work,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: blame me, uh Dan writes in Bill O'Brien is the
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: top candidate for OC as everyone knows. Say that he
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: gets hired and we don't make a lot of moves
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: on offense in the offseason. Do you believe he and
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Mac can get more out of the current offense or
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: our roster moves necessary to take this team to the
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: next level. Even with an actual OC Yeah, you gotta,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I mean you gottat. I would say yes, and yes,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I think he would get more out of the current.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: But you need I think it's kind of consensus they
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: need that number one receiver. Would you go after DeAndre
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Hopkins considering that there is a hint hint? I'm lukewarm
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: on that idea. I'm kind of coming down on DeAndre
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Hopkins old. You know, I just he's a great player.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, But I don't know. I just
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: but but I would say this situation, and I totally
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: get that thought. My feeling right now is like I'm
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: just looking at tackle, wide, receiver, cornerback, Like those are
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: the positions I'm only really concerned about with this Patriots
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: team right now. And of those, if you had to
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: sign a thirty something, you know, thirty thirty one, thirty
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: two year old free agent, which position would you choose?
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: You know, like, like that's the only thing that's appealing
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to Hopkins. I feel like you can still play at
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: that level. I'd rather draft a tackle. I think they're
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: pretty good at developing corners. I just look at this
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: free agency class though, and I just it doesn't really
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: seem all that exciting, doesn't really seem it just I
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: think that's a good question. I think I would rather
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: have a thirty one year old tackle than a thirty
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: one year old I don't even think it's necessarily that
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: I'm worried about his play like falling off a cliff
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: this year or something like that. It's just how do
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: you grow with a young quarterback and a thirty one
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: year old receiver? Like, to me, the ideal scenario is
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: that you pair Mac Jones with somebody like te Higgins
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: who's twenty four, and you grow together, right, and you
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: build together, and now all of a sudden, you have
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: a quarterback wide receiver tannin for the next five years
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: instead of just talking about it for one year. And
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: that's where I'm sort of coming off Hopkins a little bit,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: is just because it is at a two year window
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: with Hopkins, Like how much are how long is he
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: really going to be here for? But if you only
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: maybe have a two year window with Mac, or at
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: very least you want to see next year Mac with
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: a direct route to an elite receiver, Like I'm totally
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: with you on Higgins, Like I think that's like, especially
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: if you believed in Mac long term and you're like,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: let's get him locked up for four or five years. Now,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: we'll get Mac on the second and they'll be together
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: for a while. But I also just wonder of a
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: certain this season, let's find out what Mac has. Let's
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: let's actually give him a guy, so that there isn't like, well,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: he didn't really have a guy. Which also I saw
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: DeVante Parker had like a tweet like I am that guy.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Like somebody was like, we just gotta get we gotta
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: get Mac that guy. I mean, I do think you
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: get a strong I just thought it was a funny, funny,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: little stung like I'm not gonna say no to DeAndre Hopkins.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: I won't get it wrong. Yeah, but I just think that,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And I would also say that, you know, looking just
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: at the free agency pool, you gotta look at the
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: guys that are going to be free agents next year
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: also because those guys are the ones that get traded.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: So that's that's why I have T Higgins on the right.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: So like that's like what happened with AJ Brown or
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: what happened with Tyreek Hill, like those guys are get
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: traded in there the year before they're going to hit
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the open market. And I just look at all those situations,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: you know, Aj Browns to Fond Diggs, like that was
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the perfect timing of our quarterback is as sending, and
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: we want to pair him with somebody that is a
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: number one bona fide stud wide receiver that's also going
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: to be able to hit his prime or hit a
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: good part of his career at the same time as
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: the quarterback. Otherwise you feel like you're you're shrinking your window.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Like with Hopkins, I think it becomes a two year thing.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: What if Mac is only a two year thing? But
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you still would benefit from having like whoever the next
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: quarterback is would benefit from having t Higgins right Dylan
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: and Nashville. All I can picture when Fred questions what
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Gerard actually does is a scene in office space where
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Tommikowski keeps telling the consultants that he has people skills
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: looking forward to some offseason slot soap talk. He does,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: what would you say it is you do here? Uh?
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Dave writes in he says, Fred, you ignored my email
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: last week. All Tamara, there are able and willing agents
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: trying to get teams to hire their clients. There are
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: lists out there. Talk to the agents about their HUT coaches.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Rooney rule. Okay, all right, Well
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: that's why they report the interviews, so that they get
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: their name, the agents get the names of the coaches
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: out there. Then you get to know these guys that
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: are candidates, even if they're not really a real candidate.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: How about the dude from the Cowboys missing his first
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: four extra points last night? I can I have like
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: a little minor nit to pick two with with regard
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: to the coverage of these games, Like so he missed
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: the first there was no drama in that game, Like
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: that game was over. I don't know how you felt, like,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: I don't know if you like I didn't. I didn't
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: even watch a second At one point I think they said,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: I think Joe Bucks said, or Aikman I think might
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: have been Aikman said, you know, you know, anybody else
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: playing quarterback bail of the team, and people would probably
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: have tuned out. But you can't ye with him, you know.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: But I did like it was over. So they score
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a fifth touchdown and they kind of missed the extra point,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: like I don't know how as ESPN, there's nothing else
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: of any interest in this game. Right, it's a blowout,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: the game's over. Is he gonna miss five? I'm like,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: I want to see it, right, I mean it was
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: like a car crash. You can't look away. And they didn't.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: They kind of missed it. They kind of missed the
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: last extra point, the one he made. Yeah, speaking of coverage,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: al Michaels and Tony Dungey got panned horrible for their game. Yeah,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: and they didn't do it. They didn't really. It was lifeless.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: It was like Dungee is kind of lifeless. Yeah, al
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Michaels is a snore. What did they do? Because they
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: turned the proper energy to come back? It was a
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: twenty seven to nothing come back, and you would have
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: thought that it was I just didn't notice five. I
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: really didn't notice until I went until I went on Twitter,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: I noticed, And I think it was the only person
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: on the planet that didn't notice. I think on Beetle
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: and Zoe yesterday, they were just replaying the like last
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: segment of the like the last play of the game,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: and it was completely like you'd have no idea that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: they that they Oh and there's a flag though that
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: maybe all right, it looks like it's like it just
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: completely fizzled out at the end. Now they like, Wow,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: what a comeback or anything like that. It's time for
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: album Michaels to hang it out. I think so Legend,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: just like Brady Legend, hall of famer in his in
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: his profession, he's seventy eight years old, like at some
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: point like you're bringing the energy at eighty years old
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: is just And now I guess the de facto best
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: analysts in the business is Greg Olsen. Oh, I thought
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: it was pretty good. He's all right. I don't know
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: about best in the business. That's what I'm saying because
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I don't pay attention enough to what these guys say.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: But I I, did you know that that was the
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Giants game? Right? Giants Vikings? He did? Yeah? I thought he.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I thought he's good. I thought he was pretty good.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: That was the only game I didn't catch. I think
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: the the my favorite boosts are the ones where I
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: think a couple of weeks ago they had Riddick and
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Orlovsky and the boosts. So then you get the quarterback
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: perspective and then you get the dB perspective. Too, and
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: they kind of go back and forth about the chess
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: matches and the cat and mouse games and stuff like that.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: I love those types of boots because you get you
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: really get in the head of like, Okay, well the
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: safeties are reading this and the quarterbacks reading that, and
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: get to understand what's going on Alex and Raleigh. With
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: the Patriots announcing they're looking for noc in the talks
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: of moving to a Shanahan type offense, do you think
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: it would be smart to also find an old line coach? Yeah?
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Are their talks about moving to a Shanahan offense, Well,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: there was last year. It was last year. I don't
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: know what they're gonna do. I don't know who they're
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: gonna hire, but they need an offensive line coach either way. Yeah,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I mean, unless Patricia's going to stay the offensive line coach.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: I don't know that that's going to happen, but know
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: they need they need one, Thank them, send them on.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Does anyone think that they're going to get a new
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: special teams coach or though I do, I do think
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Joe Judge backed into that position. I mean, I think
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: that was some of the speculative speculation with with Zoe.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: I mean I think that would be I just doesn't
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: it fine if you're a cam Accord, what what are
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: you doing? Right? I I understand that maybe he doesn't
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: have a ton of options at the end of the day,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: but is he a full special teams guy throw them
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: through forever? Yeah? And I just they also have Joe
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Houston on staff, who's the assistant special teams coach. So
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: then cam Accord becomes the assistant and Joe Houston becomes
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the assistant to the assistant. Like everybody gets the motive, right,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: I'm just not. I agree that that's a problem area
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: of the team, but I just don't know how you
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: move Judge back to Special Teams and then cam Accord
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: still in the building, Like, I don't know how that
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: how could he be the assistant? I agree with you
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: on that, it's like remedial because that's what Zoe had. Yeah,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: you know, Joe Judge special Teams and then Cam Accord
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: assistant Special Teams Like he's he's going to take a demotion.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: I mean, I guess you do it because what other
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: options do you have. I mean, no one's hireing him.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: Sean writes in I'm mostly joking but I wonder what
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: you guys think about TB twelve coming back. Yeah yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: over my dead body yet think I mean, I mean,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: I would take him, but I don't think that. I
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: don't think there's any player like a one day retirement ceremony.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: He signed that. I'm talking about playing. He signed that
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: football for Logan Ryan. He said that's the last pass
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: as a Patriot. I just from a football perspective, I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: don't get it from either party. This team is not
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: a forty six year old Tom Brady away from winning
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: a Super Bowl, and for the Patriots, then you're just
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: right back in the position that you were in twenty
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: twenty when he decides to retire. So I just I
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: don't understand it from either perspective why that would make
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: any sense? Yemi in Texas, this is mostly for evidence.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Sounds like why are you guys reluctant to give Brock credit?
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: He's what mac Jones was sold as, unlike mac Purdy
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: was a four year starter in college and played with
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: inferior talent every week. I think that has helped him
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: adjust to the NFL, where he has a better team
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: around him. Signed missus Purdy, I just what am I
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: supposed to say to that. They're like, Okay, if we
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: put take how many quarterbacks in the league in that
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: offense do you will against that defense on Sunday on Saturday.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: That's one I definitely would have pushed back on before
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Purdy because every other quarterback who's played for Shanahan other
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: than Jimmy loses. This guy's six and oh or whatever
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: it is. But wins and loss is not even about
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: that though, right, Like it's the kind of think it
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: is a little bit about that. I don't know that's
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: I'm not a wins his losses as a quarterback stack guy.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: But you have the like Jimmy Garoppolo was third in
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: the league this year in EPA when he was in there,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: they had a top five offense with Jimmy two, so
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that I don't really think it matters who plays quarterback
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: for him. I think Trey could play quarterback for him
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: next week and they put up thirty points. But when
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: he did play quarterback, they didn't do that. That's That's
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: what I'm saying, is he was They've had Jimmy, Jimmy.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Jimmy's record with San Francisco was ridiculous, right, They've been
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: a machine, regardless of if it's Purty or if it's
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: Jimmy Right. But but there's been a lot of other
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: guys that it hasn't been a machine, like the Nick
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Mullins in the CJ. Bethards of the world Y CJ.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Bethard had a better track record coming out of college
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: than Brock Purdy did. Did he also have Christian McCaffrey
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: and he didn't. He didn't have McCaffrey, but he had
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: those other guys. Sure, I just I think that this
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Niners run would have been exactly the same with any
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: other quarterbacks. Yeah, I don't know. I'm not ready to
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: say that. Did you know that Monte Assin Ford is
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the new GM of the Cardinals? Yes, Actually somebody said
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: it already today in this show. I think Evan mentioned
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: it missed. Yeah, he uh. We talked about Billy O'Brien
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: has a Really you said that, didn't you, Evan? Was
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: that off air? Yeah, owing to Arizona. Yeah, Billy O'Brien has,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I guess a little bit of a relationship with Austin Ford,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: as does Brian Flores. So both of those guys I
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: think could be in the mix. Yeah, he's beyond the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: staff in some capacity and nice things to say Crafts
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and and Belichick a couple quotes from him. So yeah, uh,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Ben writes in from Brooklyn. Two things that flew under
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the radar and special teams were the Cody Davis injury
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: in the Justin Bethel departure from Miami. Any chance they
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: resigned the ladder Justin Bethel? I hope not. I felt
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: like schooler. Didn't they get rid of Bethel after a
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: FELI Schooler was kind of coming home? Yeah, Cody Davis.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: One's interesting, do you want to throw another one in?
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Their schooler didn't play in the last game. They have
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: to kickoff returns. What is that cliche about cause, cause
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and effect? No, Like, I don't know, I'll figure it
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: outation correlation, one of those those between that between that
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: punter and kickoff deficiencies. Perhaps Bill was onto something with
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: those big splash signings in prior years of special teamers.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: On the first day of free agency. Yeah, I mean
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: it's again that Deis goes back to like things that
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: you came to believe about the Patriots, and you know
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: that's and that's like and it also goes to the
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: point I said earlier of like offensive tackle, wide receiver, cornerback,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: like those are the positions to think about and focus on.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: We don't need a fourth rounder who might play special
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: teams like you know, like I know they did bad
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: last year. I'm fine to just let them develop and
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: see what happens. Bring Joe Judge back and let it
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: take care of itself. Jack and Anaba writes in is
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: Mac Jones a championship caliber quarterback? If he is, then
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: the Patriots should proceed to build a championship roster around him.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: If he isn't, then the Patriots highest priorities should be
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: to acquire a quarterback who has the potential to become
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: a championship caliber quarterback. The Patriots don't know whether Mac
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: is a championship caliber quarterback. How are they going to
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: find out? What do you think? I think they need
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: to build the roster regardless, Like I think it was
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: to Paul's point about te Higgins, whether it's macer it's
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: it's Lamar Jackson, Like you need the players around the
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: quarterback either way, So I don't think it's it's kind
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: of a chicken or the egg thing, like right, it
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: doesn't really matter which one. Well an he won a
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: national championship. Does that count? Does he does that make
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: him a championship quarterback? If you want a championship, get
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: Josh Hypele next No l at Wisconsin. Two things, First,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I think that's since it's a week wide receiver class,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: you can book a wide receiver. And two, do you
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: have any names of fourth round tackles? I want to
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: know who we're taking at fourteen. I disagree with the
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: week wide receiver comment. I don't think I think he's
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: being funny, but anyway, but I disagree. Anyways, it's not
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: it's not top heavy like we've seen in years pass
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: right and years passed, when you have Waddle and all
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the you know, Davante Smith and Ceedee Lamb and like
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: every wide receiver under the sign of those are off
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: from different classes. But my point is is that he
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: had all these wide receivers, but they had This is
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: a really strong depth wide receiver class that I would
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: say more resembles maybe like twenty nineteen when you had
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I think Hollywood Brown was the highest wide receiver pick
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: in that draft, and like the twenties, and the Patriots
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: obviously took to kill Harry at thirty two. But then
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: you also had A J. Brown and Deebo Samuel and
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Terry McLaurin and Hunter Renfro and all these guys go
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: after that, So DK metcalf. So I think that that's
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: where the sweet spot for this wide receiver classes is,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: like Day two, like the second and third round wide receivers.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: I think it's gonna there's gonna be some players in
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: that top one hundred for sure. And final prediction, Dradmeo
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: is the next head coach of the n EP. The
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: report says a long term deal, and I wouldn't exactly
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: expect Bill at seventy one to be the long term coach.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Just wonder how much of a did they actually talk
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: about these things. I mean, it's just like, you know,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: with something dangled for him, you know, as Bill on
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: board with that, it's this, you know, Craft's kind of
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: that's putting something in a place's point My thing. I
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: want to ask the panel, like forgetting about what you
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: think of Gerard Mayo as a coach. Do you think
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: it's a good thing to have the coach and waiting
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: like are you okay with that? Well, what's the precedent?
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: Have we ever seen that before? Not? I'm not talking
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: about here, but anywhere, like where the coach and waiting
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: was on the team. Well, it's happened. I was gonna
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: say it's happened, but it never really comes to fruition,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: right right. Um. For a different reason, I'm trying to
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: separate my personal feelings from this, because obviously, if Gerard
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Mayo was the head coach here, it will be wonderful.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: It'd be great for us because we like him and
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: we have good relationships with him, and it would be
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: it would be good for us. How do you know,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: maybe he'd be worse than Bill when it comes to access. No,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: I'm serious. When it comes to access, he might, but
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: not when it comes to his interactions. Oh. The reason
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I don't like it has nothing to do with Bill.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I don't like it because how do we know Girard
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Mayo is the best guy for the job. Well that
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: that That's basically what my question is. Like, I'm opening
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: it to when we get two years down the line
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: and let's say Bill says I'm done, I'm retiring, and
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: they say, oh, we're going to hand the keys off
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: to Girard Mayo. He's the coach in waiting. But let's
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: say somebody else is available that is a better candidate
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: than I don't know if I'm going to be too
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: thrilled that they're just handing it to Gerard Mayo. It's
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the example that I used this year of you know,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: a lot of people would really just scoff at you
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: if you even mentioned the mere possibility that Robert sat
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: down with Bill Belichick and said we're going to go
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: in a different direction Bill after this season. How can
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: you do that well, because maybe there's a guy available
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: that you didn't know it was going to be available,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Sean Payton. Now I'm not telling you I'd rather have
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Sean Payton than Bill. I wouldn't, but someone might rationally
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: think that Sean Payton would be a better option. Maybe
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: they're looking at the final eight coaches that are left
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: in the playoffs right now, seeing that seven of them
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: have an offensive background. In Bill's more of a defensive background,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: so is Gerrod Mayo. Maybe you'd rather have John Payton
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: as an offensive guy to sort of keep up with
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: the Joneses. I don't think that's a like irrational thought. No,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Juan and Mexico has a would you rather game? He says,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: this is my first game if they suck, I apologize.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Um love games. Would you rather Mac with Hopkins and
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien or Lamar Jackson with Matt Patricia? Well, I
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: know what's your first game. It's called conundrum. But let's
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: make it an absolute impossibility for Bill O'Brien and DeAndre Hopkins.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: That can happen. Right, A lot of layers to this question. Yeah,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: I would rather have Lamar Jackson. I would. I know
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: you guys wouldn't because no one likes who's gonna pay him,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: including Ravens Lamar Jackson. I like Lamar Jackson. I just
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: don't know if I could picture him here, just a
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: very specific one. Why No, I'm not I'm not saying
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: that the money, saying I would rather have him here
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: than Mac Jones because of the money. You can't see
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: him here, Um, I just for for many reasons. I
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: just I couldn't see him here. Where's the current If
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: the Ravens don't resign him, where's he gonna go? So,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: so here's the Patriots, one of the favorites in the
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: betting world. Yes, anybody rabbit rant about this and I'm
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: gonna save But like, has anybody ever actually seen if
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Vegas is ever right about any of this, because we
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: all just assume, oh, Vegas knows something, and they put
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: they put those odds. But for Lamar Jackson, this is
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: the let me like map this out for people that
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: want Lamar Jackson, because I love Lamar Jackson. I think
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: he's an awesome quarterback, awesome player. The Ravens are gonna
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: tag him. Okay, they're not gonna lose him for nothing,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: so they're gonna tag and trade him. So now you're
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: gonna tag him. You're probably gonna give up at least
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: a first round pick for Lamar Jackson. Then you're gonna
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: pay Lamar Jackson forty five million dollars a year, and
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: then you're gonna overhaul your entire offensive system to fit
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson exactly like these are. It's just a lot.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: It's a lot. Now, if you had of his system
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: in place that already is pointed in that direction as
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: it is, then it maybe it's not as much. But
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: there's so few teams that have that scenario. Or if
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: you're a team like the Jets, where it's you just
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: gotta do it. So it makes sense for the Ravens
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: to tag him because it's one year. You're gonna pay
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: him what the tag now forty million or something like that,
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: So you're gonna pay him forty millions. So it's worth
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: that to just pay him to play for one year
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: and you don't have the risk of a long term contry.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: He's not playing on the tag, but okay, so that's
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: the second thing. Will he play? No, he won't play
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: on the tag, And I don't blame him because for
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: his with his playing style, this is the contract that
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: he has to maximize his value and get that guaranteed money.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: Because as we saw this year, the knee blows out,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: and so you'd rather sit out and not get paid
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: than play. I think so he might be right. I
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, he did it this year. I
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: think it's pretty I think the evidence is starting to
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: stack up that he probably could have played, yeah, in
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: the playoff game. Now, I think he made the right
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: choice not playing. You know, I could envision like a
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Robert Griffin situation happening with him. He goes out and
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: plays a playoff game, and then he does further damage
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: and his career is never the same. But I like
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: your point Fred about like, if you're the Ravens. You
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: can kind of afford to play a little bit of
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: chicken with him because everything that Evan just mapped out,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: it's not as easy as like you have this great
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: I love Lamar Jackson. I am higher on Lamar Jackson
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: than most people around here for sure. But that's really
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: the only team that's kind of like done it for him,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: right So who else is going to give him two
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: hundred and fifty million guaranteed right right and hired Gregor
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Roman and build the offensive system that they need to build.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I think Lamar's pride could be factor. What I would wonder,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: big factor, Like I wouldn't overhaul my system. I would
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: I would roll that. Now it's big gamble, but I
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: would roll the dice and see if he could play
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: more traditionally like Deshaun Watson does. Yeah, it's not like
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: he's coming out of college. He's a better passer now
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: than he was, and he could still run. He could
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: still make play. But I don't have to have like
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Gus Edwards and JK. Dobbins in the backfield and to
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: just play smash mouth all day, you know, with a
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: three hundred pound defensive lineman as my fullback. Well, that's
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: I don't have to have it that way. The bang,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I think it was Jesse Bates on the Bengals was like, well,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: we're gonna play We're not gonna play the wing tea
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: this week. You know about the about the Ravens. But
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: I think that your point about deshaun's interesting because if
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien's the higher and then Bill O'Brien runs the
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson offense with Lamar Jackson he played, he did
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: really well with Deshaun Watson as a young quarterback too.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I mean, I look, I love Lamar Jackson too. He's
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: one of my favorit players in the league. I just
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: think that all of the optics of what you'd have
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: to give up to get them, then what you would
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: have to pay him, and then the overhaul that you
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: would have to do to fit the system around him,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: and it's just a lot of steps that where things
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: could easily go wrong. And if you're Lamar, you have
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: to understand those things right, like, like what do you
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: want if you're him, Like, because you're asking so much
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: from a team, how many teams can do all those things?
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: And on the other side of it, in year one,
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: they're contenders. With Lamar Jackson, it seems like any team
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: would probably have a year at least to two years
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: of rejiggering. You know, Like Lamar, you're gonna go somewhere
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: and they're gonna pay you a ton and they're gonna
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: build around you, but you're probably gonna have to wait
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: a couple of years before really contending. It depends where
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: it comes, like, and I don't know what the what
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: the different options are, but there are teams that I
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: think that need quarterbacks that could be pretty close. Like, again,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: this comes down to Evan and I think more of
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson than you do. And that's no disrespecting, Like
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: everybody has an opinion on different players. Yeah, Like just
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: like if he goes to the Jets, No, that's if
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: that's scary. If you absolutely, if you went to the Jets,
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: it would work like they could be if if he
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: if he goes to the Jets, that's a team that
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: can contend right away, didn't Josh McDaniels love him coming
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: out of the draft. Well that was so the other
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: thing that you have to remember with Lamar Jackson is
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: that he doesn't have an agent and his his mom
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: runs his life. So if you want Lamar Jackson, then
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: you gotta get Mama Jackson. What are you gonna do
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: for my baby? Oh no, that's exactly. She's a scary woman.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: From what I've heard, she's she's really His life is
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: a movie like that. Someday there's like gonna be a
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Lamar like a blind Side movie, but like with Lamar
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Jackson and his mom because that, Michael, come on, you're
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: that mom is. I've seen her in action, and she is.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: She's terrified. I fully believe that. I mean I still
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: remember the draft and just how they kept cutting the
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: camera back to him, like, oh see, he should have
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: gone as a wide receiver. You should have gotten receivers
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: still waiting around. I can't wait to see like the
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: story with that. Your point is very valid, Fred with Baltimore,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: because they might be looking at us like we're the
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: team that's built it for you, right right. But at
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: the same time, and I heard this ridiculous criticism. I
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: think it was Marcus Spears was talking about, you know,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: they they've let him down, the franchises let him down.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: They had Mark Andrews lined up at the X. You know,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: in the two minute drill down the step. Well, yeah,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Richard Bateman's hurt, Devin Duvernai's hurt. Like, I'm not telling
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: you that that's like the equivalent of Stefan Diggs and
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson because it's not. But those are competent NFL receivers.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: And when they were here in Week three, they threw
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: the ball in an NFL style, not just a gimmick style.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: The touchdown catch that Duvernai had in the corner below
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: us and in the ends, that was a great throw
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: and catch. Like they didn't have those playmakers, you'd throwing
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: the ball too. What's the guy? His name Crochet, James Crochet.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: I mean, come on, like they didn't have those guys available,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: like they have that team and the first ten weeks
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: of the season was a contender in the AFC. Yeah,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I also don't get the mark. And it was at
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: the X argument, like the Patriots has to do that
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: with Gronk all the time. They would flex him out
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: and let him go one on point being they didn't
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: have anybody else that was the point. Well, they've been
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: but I mean you completely under the rug that all
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: the guys that they've gotten are not available, right, now,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: I mean people come after the Patriots, and rightfully so
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: for drafting Hollywood Brown. H Bateman has been hurt. I
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: think he's talented, but he's been hurt. Duvernet is an
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: interesting player, but he's kind of like a gadgety receiver
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: and not only traditional. Yeah, they've had a really tough
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: miles and they both have their both that's that's that's
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: really interesting. They're both tied Baltimore and the Patriots ideology
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: is very similar, and they both struggle at the same position. Yeah.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: I never really thought about it, and Baltimore can drafted
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: every position, yes, except uh so Wan your first Uh
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: would you rather it was pretty good? Oh? Wow? Sorry?
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: Yeah no, uh second, would you rather Matt becomes Matt
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: Ryan level or Zappi becomes Kirk Cousins level? Those are
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: two different levels. I know I'm gonna take the Matt
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Ryan lewe Yeah, MVP quarterback that can't ever win it.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: I think Matt Ryan's better than Kirk Cousins, but not
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: by a ton. Yeah, I'm with Paul. I was going
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: to say, okay, all right, I think Matt Ryan. You know,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: this is to you a point about the shanty An system.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: I think Matt Ryan had one outlier year. I think
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: otherwise he's been good. With all Patriots. I was giving
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: you credit. Do I have to put it in writing? Yes,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: all Patriots games called by Al Michaels and Tony Dungee
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: or all Patriots games called by Romo. See, it doesn't
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: affect us. What happened to What game was that where
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Romo was on it? And I was like, yeah, he's
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: when his first couple of years, I was like, Wow,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: this guy's great. He's a breath of fresh air. Like
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: I don't know, like if somebody said, you know, stop
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: telling people what's gonna happen before it happens. Don't do
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: that anything. That was the only thing you brought to
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: the table, and they don't do it hems and haws
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: until it happens. And yeah, that's what I thought was
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: gonna happen. It's one Jim. It's like, Tony, what do
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you think the Jim? It's like that he cashed in
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and he's the second. Yeah, you get worse at it.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: The best boys. The Bills took the field in the
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: second half of their first drive the third quarter, and
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: he goes, I just feel like the bills are gonna
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: take off here and then it was a fumble sect
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: wrong And this one is for Mike, Paul and Tamara.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: Five days a week for unfiltered shows, or five postgame
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: shows after primetime game. Five days a week of regular shows. Yeah,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: the week, those nights, those night postgame shows. Grandpa Paul
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: can't handle the post the post games. I have theme
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: i'd see to me, like the postgame show, like you
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: get all that? I love. I love the post the
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: Postgame Show is my favorite show of the week. It is, Yeah,
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: it is. I'm just saying specifically after the primetime games,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: especially this year's. Yeah, they're the smallest file. If we're
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: going to do this, anybody have to get on the
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: money after those primetime games and then fly across the plane.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: So like, if you're food, should we tell him what
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: an overnight is. I don't think he understands. Now, try
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: do when every newspaper guys are coming after you come
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: home and having four hours of work to do it's
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: a newspaperman and having having someone have to shuffle the
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: photos down to photo map. So you should be thinking,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: my generation, it's now all dot com and you don't
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: have to do that anymore. You're worth Internet. But yeah,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: you know nothing of late nights coming home. You get
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: on the plane, you come home nights in early mornings,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: you go home. Yeah, and they come right back O
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: my world problems from all of us right now. Then
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: there was that there was a short time frame where
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: Fred started the pre and post game shows and Andy
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: and I stopped traveling, and but we still did the paper.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: So they would be in like Denver and we'd be
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: done with the postgame show. You know, let's say like midnight.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Didn't have to wait for them to get home, like
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: six am. You wouldn't let you go out. We had
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: all the stuff done, we had all the pages written,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: you know, but we had to wait for the photos
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: to get you know, like everything to be put in Silverman.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: It was brutal. We had. We had like two hours
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: of editing to do when we got back. Yeah, I
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: mean we actually proved it. I had like I would
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: be bad. I had an air mattress in my office
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: and I just blow it up. I'd sleep for a
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: couple of hours wait for them to come in and
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: be like, all right, the world's first air matchs. Wow,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: this guy's tough on me have airback actually made out
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: of straw. It's like Jesus, wow, William, why do you
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: chime in if you're younger than at least seems that way,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: does it does? It doesn't. It's a guy who hasn't
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: walked straight in like twenty years. Okay, let's go. Let's go.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: There were going? Where were going? They a sport? Andy Hart? Okay,
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: you want to grab a bat. I'll you want to
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: embarrass yourself like Andy did, I'll beat you like I
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: beat him like a dollar bell bo hey woman, uh
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: seth in Portland, the one in Oregon. I really appreciate
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: what you do. Lived away from Boston for a long time,
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: and you make it easy to know what's going on
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: inside the fan base. Question slash a game. I think
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: the three top offseason needs are impactful players at corner, receiver,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: in ot. There we go for this question. You have
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: to get one in the first round, one in a
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: later round, and one through free agency. Which position would
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: you get where? And who would you target? The target?
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Heart Um, yeah, I guess I would I guess first round,
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: first round. I'd go receiver. Yeah, I'd go corner. It's
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: a tough corner class. I go tackle, just because I
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: haven't looked in the class. I know some of the
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: players available, and I think tackles were the best tack
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: I would go tackle. First round receiver, later round in
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: free agent corner, free agent corner. So I had a
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: question for you. I know that you've always been the athletic,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: rangy linebacker. That's always been your but you've seemed to
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: come off that a little bit. Yeah. No, and that's
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: and I'm glad you brought that up. Well, part of
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: it is unfortunate resignation that they're probably gonna ride with
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Bentley and they resigned by and so those guys are
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: probably the guys in If they're gonna get somebody like that,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: it's going to be like a rotational backup kind of guy.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: So that's why I've made piece of it. But I
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: will say to add a fourth thing to the defense,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: I just I think you need somebody in the front seven.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: It could be a defensive tackle, it could be a
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: defensive edge player. I just think you need another Chap'll
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: just keep playing the second half of season. That would
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: be nice, you know, hey, that would be great. Um,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: you want to get back to when you had three
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: first round picks and you had wolf Fork you had,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I wouldn't be able for the days. But
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: I think just one more, you know, some kind of
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: reinforcement continue building around those guys. If you bring in
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: somebody that could unsee Dietrich wise, I'm not I'm not
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: against it. I think that that could be upgraded. I
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: think Bentley could be upgraded, even though I think that
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: they're probably married to him at least for another year.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: So the reason why I had this best season, the
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: reason why I brought it up, is because they have
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: been extremely zone heavy over the last couple of years,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: and I think they want to get back to playing
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: more man to man ideally, but chasing that Stefan Gilmore,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Derell Reeves Corner to play more man to man. If
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: they can't do that, then they gotta get more athletic
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: at linebacker to play so much zone. And the one
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: guy that I look at in free agency who I
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: think is really really interesting is Tremaine Edmonds. I knew
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: you were going to say that, and I was like,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: because that's another one of those guys that was drafted
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: too high for you to get your hands on him.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: And he is a freak. I mean, he's only like
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: twenty four years old. Yeah, really really, Now, I think
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: Buffalo is going to find a way to keep them,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: because they just pay over the cap until they can
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: find a way to keep everybody. But I think that's
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: an interesting one that if he does come free, that's
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: another and that ste find Gilmour style of just there's
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: not that many guys like this that exists. I love it,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: I mean, and that's why I like looking at the
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: class and maybe I'm a little bit gun shy from
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. It's like I'd rather just I don't
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: need to sign eight guys that are he's okay. I'd like,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: I'd rather just give me one, give me one at
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: that position and put a bunch of I was gonna say,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: I'm with Duke. I would rather not have eight knockoffs.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: I need like name brand like I need ON. I
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: don't need. I like it. I don't need some squad
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: tie you know she wants. It's like I don't want
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: the Amazon dupe thing. I want the real thing. Like,
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: don't meet someone from a school I think, you know,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: you don't know if I have to google what school
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: he came from? The Mox the tackle I think will
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: end up being the first round pick. Yeah, But the
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: way that the question was posed is like, what would
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: you rather like? I'd rather do what Evan's talking about
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: and getting established a tackle and pay for it. I
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: just don't think they will. Yeah, I don't think they'll
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: give him ACCLINCHI or Orlando Brown top of the market tackle.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: I just like taking a tackle the first because it's
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: more of a sure thing. Yeah. I don't know why
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: you think that. I just need a lot to happen
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: one day. Better not trade down, they better if anything,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: no one has time. I just think that when I
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: look at when I look at this free agency class,
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: it's not a great free agency class for the guys
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: that are expected to hit the market. So I would
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: rather instead of just overpaying somebody at a position to
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: need like they did last time, or they overpaid Nelson
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: Agalore and Johnny Smith just because they needed a tight
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: end and a wide receiver. You might linebacker might not
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: be your biggest knee on the board right now, but
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Jermaine Edmonds can flat out play, and so that's a
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: guy that comes in and just makes you a better
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: football team. And instead of handing a bag to somebody
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: that's not really that good, Like, you know, we handed
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: a bag to a Pro Bowl player and I think
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: with him too. He's big. It's not it's not a
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: total departure from the body. Yeah, the way that pladed
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: he made against Miami and the flat that that play
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: in coverage, Like they don't have a single book guy
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: on the roster that can make that play. Oh, by
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: the way, how mad would you have been if Kyle
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: van Noy made that interception that was right in his head?
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: He had a couple of those. He's really good at timing.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: The one in the last drive. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: He posted on Twitter like a screenshot a note screenshot,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: like basically apologizing to Chargers fans that they blew a
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: twenty seven and nothing lead. It's like he never would
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: have done that there. Uh, John and Melbourne in Australia.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: I know I'm late on this one as I'm catching
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: up on last week's AT episode, but I was keen
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: to check out Paul's assertion that Kendrick Bourne would be
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: up there for penalties per snap. I could find penalty numbers,
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: but not per snap, only by positions, So amongst all
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: receivers in the league. He's ranked thirty seventh two with
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: two although there was one to call he had more
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: than two penalties. Please, that's what he said. That's not
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: that's whatever that website was is wrong. You're texting Kendrick.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: I guess my hindsight is off because I was with
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: Paul feeling that he'd be up there. But Myers has
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: something more and it's nothing on Metcalf and Hollands, who
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: leads a position with seven each. Yeah, well Bourne played
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: probably how mean how many snaps did Bourne played in
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: comparison to That's the thing per snap? You know we
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: could have drafted DK Metcalf. Yeah, we'll forget that. I've
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: heard that. Yes, and if you did, he wouldn't be
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: this player. No, if you if you draft, if you
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: draft metcalf o. But uh, he had four penalties, Paul,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: Thank you. I knew, I knew it wasn't two. If
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: you drafted Metcalf over Kenel Harry, then you're an idiot.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: Quote Michael Lombardi Kenel Harry, that's a complete receiver. That's
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: what That's what I heard. Do you think he gets signed?
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: I mean, so that was that was Michael Lombardi heading
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: into that draft. So the rest of John's email, I
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: don't know how accurate it is, but he says, um,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: let's see if you're interested. Brown led the team with
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: nine penalties to decline and winds are all wrong, and
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: when followed with eight one decline, these are all wrong.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: I'm sorry, they're all wrong. Y. So I don't know
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: why funlies for no reason. And he also says we
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: had more penalties in twenty twelve, fourteen, fifteen and eighteen.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: But I don't know. I don't know if any of
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: that information. Trent Brown was called for thirteen penalties, wow,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: which led all offensive lineman. Was time for the lead
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: of all probably could have had twenty all accepted, or
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: some of those wins would have beaten him had he
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: not gotten hurt. How many did to win end up
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: with in half a season? He might be right closer
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: with win just because he didn't play enough to rack
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: him up. I'll look all right, let's see Shane and
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: Ireland writes in first time emailer, having listened to Evan
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: discuss how the Patriots finally went back to the style
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: at work last season. Did the coaching staff put Mac
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: in a position to fail in the Bills game. All
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: year long, the calls have been conservative and regularly taking
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: the game out of Max's hands. Then when the seasons
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: on the line, they tell him to throw. Surely this
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: was always going to end up in some mistakes through
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: the lack of practice and game situations, not just Mac,
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: but all the skill positions being unfamiliar with the game
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: plan after a season of playing another way, did you
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: guys see that? So the first three games they did
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: exactly what they did. Their gameplay coming into the season
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: was to let Mac cook. They wanted to spread the
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: field and let him bombs away. And I think some
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: people are gonna take this and say, oh, well, Evan,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: you're you say everything positive about Mac, but Mac ain't
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: ready for that. He's not. Five picks later they said,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: we can't do that right, So they do need to
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: put Mac back into I wouldn't necessarily call a conservative
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: just a more manufactured offense where scheme is doing a
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: lot of the heavy lifting. They're getting guys open with
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: play action and motion like the Niners do, and that
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: I think is the offense that he would succeed in.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: They tried to play the offense this year like they
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: were the Cincinnati Bengals. We're gonna line up across from you.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: We're gonna put the quarterback in the gun. We're gonna
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: run Jamar Chase over here. I'm gonna run Te Higgins
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: over there, and you can't stop us. If you watched
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: the Bengals offense, that's all they do. They just line
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: up and they beat you one on one across the
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: board because they got better players than you. The Patriots
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: don't have better players than anybody. So to do that,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: you look at presses. You lead to turnovers. Tight window
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: throws lead to turnovers. Bombs into tight coverage lead to turnovers.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: And that's how you got the offense that you got
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: this year. All right, Ian writes in he's in Virginia
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: and the Patriots lost to the Bills. There were two
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: kick off for turns for touchdowns. It reminded me of
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: the Seinfeld episode when the sick little Boy asked Cramer
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: for Paul O'Neill to hit two home runs in a game.
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: Hamlin was the sick little boy and Hines was O'Neill.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: There were two. I didn't remember that. That's this year's
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: They didn't toun you know what I'm realizing Evan doesn't
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: do snark as well as I'll teach you. I'll teach you.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: I forgot about the um. David writes in two you
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: know what else? I heard? I don't know if this
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: is accurate, but there were only six returned for touchdowns
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: in the whole league. That's three of them were against
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: the Patriots. I heard that. That's right. I might want
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: to check that after Jake Bailey went on injured reserve.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: By the way, it wasn't a problem until then. Are
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: we in the market for two kickers? A punter and
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: a kicker? What that fifth round they're gonna draft one?
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: I can guarantee you that if they're gonna be a
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: punter or a kicker. But they do have a lot
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: of picks in this draft too. They got screwed on
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: the JC Jackson and pick because he got hurt. Yeah,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: it's supposed to be the top third round com pick.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: And now it's a fourth round pick. That's not official, right,
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: that's like now it's projections space there. What's the guys quartier?
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: He does a good job, that is it? Quote? Yeah,
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: he's he's pretty good. Give him credit. He's like, you
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: know how Doc chows like ninety nine percent of the time,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: He's right. That's guy. That guy gets the comp picks perfect. Yeah. Uh,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: let's see. David says if Devin mccordy would decide he retires,
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: or anyone on the current roster prime to take his spot,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: Jaylen Mills. Someone threw that in SPFW, I think, yeah,
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: I like the j I don't like the Joneses. What
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: about Douga Dougger. I think that's really limiting his ceiling
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: as a player, because now you're just having him play
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: post safety center field. I think he could do it,
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: but I agree with Evan. I like him near the
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: line of scrimmage too much to take that element away
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: from him. Yeah. The thing about mccordy is you're losing
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: two things. You're losing the on field in his position,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: but then the leadership, you know, so you have to
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: make up for a couple of things there. The leadership
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: thing is interesting. I don't know who stands out to
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: me necessarily out of this locker. I think we've talked
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: about this last week about leaders. Adrian Phillips to be
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: that leader. He's a quiet guy, though he's not I
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: think he can be, but he also knows when to
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: turn it on, Like I feel like when we've talked
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: to him, even talked to him even after really tough games,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: like he has really great composure and like you know,
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: does a great job where it's like some guys you like, no,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: don't go near them after a game. He's great. I
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: do think though, there's a lot of guys in that mold,
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: and there's not a lot of fiery, serious football like Bentley.
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: I think Bentley had put in that category of just
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: you know, those guys who really take it like Judon's.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: He's personable and talks, but he doesn't seem like that
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: kind of leader, you know, Like I just I think
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: you need those kind of guys like you know, that
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: are serious and I don't know who other than Bentley
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: though Dugger maybe. But he's quiet too. A lot of
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: quiet guys. M patriots are the quiet, the quiet the
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: quiet times, watch out for the quiet ones. Joey writes
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: in from San Antonio, what do you guys think about
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: trying to acquire te Higgins and Adam Dalen for twenty
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: twenty three? Granted Adam is thirty two years old, but
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: feel both players can help the offense. I would take
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: t Higgins in a blank, I'm done. I'm done with him. Yeah,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: he's mean to Bill and I didn't like that. I
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: thought they love each other. I'd either signed Jacoby resigned
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: Jakobe then, and I just feel like that should happen
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: regardless personally. I think this goes back to Evans point,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: which I was very much on board with last year too,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: when they signed two years ago, when they signed the
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: free agents and they were all guys coming off their
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: first contract in their twenties, Like I'm fine with those
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: kind of free asians signings. Like I just feel like
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: every year now you have to think weapon day one
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: or two, like you just have to continue, whether it's
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: a receiver, a tight end, or running back. Like every
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: boy at the end of day when every job. Do
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: not say that. I was just saying that someone I
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: was like a better nut running back. But either way,
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: like this is gonna have some good battles forever, and
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: when we do our draft podcast, we're gonna get it
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: running now. I guess though, to specify, when I say
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: running back, I mean more like James White receiving back,
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: you know, like those third down kind of guys. And
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: I'm not sorry to give from Alabama first round. I
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: just think you get to the end of Day two
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: in every draft, you should have one of those guys
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: in the pipeline. And that's you know, look at the
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: forty nine ers. I know that they filled out what
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: they had, but I mean they drafted, they drafted debot.
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: You know, like, you just have to keep these guys
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: in the pipeline. And it can't be every free agent
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: cycle we're gonna go get a thirty two year old Adam.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: That's what makes it hard. Like you say that in
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty, they went out and they splurged in that
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: free agent class and it was all guys coming up. Well,
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: the reason most of those guys are available is they're
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: not quite at that level because most guys that are
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: ending their first contract that are super talented get retained. Yeah,
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: or you gotta give up the more you gotta give
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: up a first round pick, like the receiver. The receiver
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: thing with I mean just look at all of them.
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: Just last year it was a j Brown, it was
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: Hollywood Brown. Terry McLaurin ended up resigning it. As Evan
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: likes to say, got the bag from Washington right, Debo
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: got the bag from San Francisco. Teams don't just let
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: that guy walk for nothing, you know. But you know,
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: most teams don't think the comp pick is worth a
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: third round con talent that they lose, you know. So
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: if you want it, like that's what it'll take. I
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: think it'll take a first round pick to get to Higgins.
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: I just look at the Higgins along with really liking
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: the player. Cincinnati does not have deep pockets. And they
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: have to pay Joe Burrow fifty million, They're gonna have
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: to pay Jabar Chase thirty million, and so at some
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: point somebody has to be the odd man out in
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: Cincinnati that they're not going to be able to afford all.
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: It's not about the cap, it's about real money coming
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: into the organization. They have a lot on defense too.
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: I talked to Jeff Hobson the day that we played
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: with Christmas Eve the Bengals, and he was talking about
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: like the Jesse Bates, Logan Wilson, a couple other guys,
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: like they're gonna have decisions, Jay Reader. They can't keep
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: all those guys. And it's not, like Evan said, it's
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: not a cap thing. How is Tyler Boyd. He he's
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: at there in age now, yeah, he's a little longer
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: than the tooth. Jesse Bates is an interesting one too, though.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: If Devin mcquarny retires and he ends up hitting free agency,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: that's another guy that he played on the franchise. If
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken this, yeah, right, that was he was
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: one of the few. I mean, looking at those free
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: agency look at the tackles. I mean you mentioned McGlinchey
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: and Brown. I mean there are some guys that you
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: look at, at least on paper. They're a name and
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: they're gonna cost a lot, but at least you can
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: see he was the other one receiver. I don't know,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: there's nobody in receiver. Then I'm like, oh, we got
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: a trade guy, all right, So a three year rebuild
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: Tyler in New York City. Are there archives somewhere of
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: old PU or PFW and Progress episodes, but I hope not.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: I'd like to listen to some old episodes during the offseason,
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: mostly to relive old moments here reactions to things we've
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: seen play out later could be really fun. Lucky for you.
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: Back and open, Matt, Do we know, I know, we
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: you know had him at one time. Well, I think
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: that's a great Oh yeah, that was a great idea.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: And then we had then we had anything I said.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: And then I think we had the great flood of
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: twenty and twelve or one of those years, right when
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: the whole system got fried. Yeah oh no, yeah, oh no,
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: all of a sudden down from the ceiling hoey this weekend,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: I guess pipe broke and we lost a lot of
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: gear and a bunch of stuff. I didn't have the
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: right producer. Oh that would have been in there with
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: a wow marine trains all. Yeah, that's what's the suction
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: pump things, the penis sump pump you know what I mean.
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: I don't know what to do. That was too uh
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: you know, on the tip of your tongue. What's going on?
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: I have been talking about something mysterious pump that he
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: and I was When I was a kid. My house
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: I grew up in the basement would flood a lot. Yeah,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: it had some pumps. Yeah yeah, my dad had it
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: all rigged and everything. I got the irrigation system where
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: sump do you know? Oh yeah, you gotta have that
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: on the cape. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. A
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: lot of ground water. Did you guys get for snow? Nothing? Really,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: I mean it's snowed, but nothing stuck. I got a
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: couple of inches yeah, up in Peabody. Yeah, the Hills
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: of Peabody save that one mapped all right? Me with that,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I think we're gonna call it at that.
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: I gotta get you. No, you have no like thoughts
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: at all, and I'm stunned. You usually have like a
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: lot of different random things that stuck out for playoff games.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: We talked about it. All you said was I was
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: happy for Trevor Lawrence, when I was like, your grand observation,
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: because you guy game back, what do you think of
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: the giants predictable upset of the Vikings, which just seemed
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: like every right about the Vikings, everybody was like, Nope, nope,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: the Giants are gonna. I mean I found myself nodding
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: off a lot and the chair on that one. That game.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: It was the best game a game I know. But
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: I woke up and a lot of had happened. I'm like, oh,
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: the ridiculous passing rough in the pass that they called
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: on Dexter Lawrence at the end of that game. That
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: fourth down, though, that was terrible Kirk kirk Cousins. If
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: that wasn't Cousins in a nutshell? Okay, take the check.
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: I'm glad that we did this. He checked it down,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: okay in the game. So whose fault was that? Kirk Cousins. Okay,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: they called a vertical concept and he checked it down.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: So why when when the Patriots check it down on
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: third and fourteen is it Matt Patricia's fault? Well, it
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: depends on the play design. It's always is always something
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: they're running post wheel to the field and he checked
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: it down. I mean, what do you want? I think
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: it was all Kirk cousins fault. Unlike most people, I
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: don't think Kirk Cousins is anything special. And I think
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: mac joe on some day might aspire it to be
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins. All the like quarterback you know X quarterbacks
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: and like Kurt warners of the world are like, what
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: would you like the quarterback to do? Okay, the safety
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: goes over to Justin Jefferson side of the field and
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: he's got two vertical routes with no safety over the
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: top on the left. It down. I don't even care
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: if there's nobody open. You can't throw it that far
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: short of the sticks on fourth down with your season
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: on the line. No, what are you expecting Hobbinson to
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: break the tackle and go oh, which one right? Like
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: he's he's like five full yards short of the sticks.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: Classic Kirk Cousins like, you can't do that, you can't.
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: I just it was amazing that as soon as the
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: play happened, my wife goes, what does Matt Patricia call
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: in the place? And I'm thinking to myself, it's amazing.
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins is getting killed on Twitter for checking it down,
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: which I was like, I didn't do it on Twitter,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: but I was saying the same thing. But like when
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Jacob Myers catches a five yard crosser run third and ten,
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: no one, no one blames mac Jones because sometimes as
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: the play design, they like to run that little downfield
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: screen thing on third and eleven and they think it's
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: gonna work. And it didn't work the times my fans
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: coming in. I told him not to bother and be
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: doing the show. It just really down. I thought that
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: had a lock up. I thought it did too. I
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: don't know, all right, now we'll call it a show now.
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: Fred Fred didn't watch the games evidently, so that's why
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: we can't talk about nap and that game was not
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: boring at that was a great game. I think I
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: think I ate something and I just kind of fell asleep.
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: Like Daniel Jones played really yeah, and san One Barkley.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: That was probably one of the best games I've seen
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: since his injury, Like he was really really yeah, he
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: had he had a good I didn't remember some of it. Yeah,
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: but what were your dreamers like doing the snore away?
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: I remember something that I was kind of hard. Nobody
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: was myself. Actually, the best part about the playoffs the
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: social media afterwards, and I also sent myself did you
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: see did you see on social media? The Giants posted
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: Daniel Jones with a Danny Dimes huge chain on, basically
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: mimicking Kirk Cousins and his jewelry. It was amazing. I
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: like that. Okay, Danny Dimes, let's settle down. I think, Okay,
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: he's not good, but I like what the social media
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: team did. That's fair. But it's like, you know what,
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: they call him Danny Dimes. Like since his rookie year.
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: I don't know why, because he had he hasn't dropped
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: a diamond like three years until Sunday. Yeah, Brian Dables
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: like holding him with kid gloves, and everybody already see
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: that game that Daniel Jones played. You just unless they
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: have the pedigree. There's like three guys that he thinks
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: are any good. Everybody else it's all about the coach, correct,
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: Dak Lamar, don't, Josh Allen, Okay, Wait Evans, Patrick Mahome Evan.
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: Do you think that Dak Prescott had a great game
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: last night or do you think the Bucks defense was
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: just really bad? No, I thought Dak played well last night.
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: I think Danny dimes. So they have you know, expected
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: completion rate right, his expected completion rate against the Vikings
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: was seventy four percent. What did he complete? Seventy good
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: job right and met and so the Vikings? What did
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: he have for expected yards gained rushing? Because he had
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: seventy eight the Vikings deep. This year, the highest PF
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: grade for five different quarterbacks has come against the Vikings defense,
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: including mac Joe. Well, the whole game I was I
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: had like the two two sides in my head. As
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: you know, I can argue even with myself. I'm watching again,
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, Danny Jones looks really good. I didn't
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: think he was this good, Danny. He's playing the Vikings.
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: I saw mac Jones do this against the Vikings, and
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: I don't think he's all right. Now, well now it's
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: at least close. All right, Um, what's what's the deal.
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: We'll be back to Thursday at noon and then Cash
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: twenty two on Thursday at two after us. Okay, all right,
