- 0:03Welcome into a special undefeated edition of the
- 0:07predators official podcast here on Nashville predators.com,
- 0:11predators YouTube, your favorite podcast platform and ESPN 102.5
- 0:16The game, a special short Friday edition of the show after the
- 0:20predators won two to one against the Columbus Blue Jackets on
- 0:24opening night Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.
- 0:27My name is Max Herz from Fred's Radio, joined by by Kara Hammer
- 0:30from Preds TV and Brooks Bratton of Nashville, predators.com.
- 0:35I got to start with a question for you guys because I told
- 0:39multiple people this week that I was predicting the Preds to win
- 0:432 to one on opening night. And I cannot remember who those
- 0:46people were who I told and I really helped it was one of you
- 0:50guys. So you can vouch for my
- 0:51correctness here on the podcast. I don't believe it was one of
- 0:57us. I do know that you had a
- 0:59predicted goal scorer of Michael McCarron, which didn't come to
- 1:03fruition. But like we were joking about,
- 1:05hey, at least you were close. You picked somebody on the team.
- 1:08We just started with the name Michael.
- 1:11Just the wrong, just the wrong guy.
- 1:13Michael Bunting got this, got the scoring started.
- 1:16Brooks, were you aware of Max's prediction here?
- 1:20I don't seem to recall. I myself called a three one
- 1:25prediction yesterday with an empty netter, so I was really
- 1:27hoping for that empty netter at the end.
- 1:30But what a start. I think we're all at least Karen
- 1:33and I were talking beforehand. We're all a little bleary eyed
- 1:36this morning but we're not used to covering hockey games till
- 1:4011:00 or 12:00 at night. But certainly well worth it to
- 1:43get a win on Night 1. But guys, nobody was putting in
- 1:47more work than Brady Martin's family.
- 1:50We have to give a shout out. The 18 year old making his NHL
- 1:54debut last night on opening night.
- 1:57I think he had 30 to 40 family members and friends in the
- 2:00building. His brothers drove overnight the
- 2:03night before down from Elmira ON.
- 2:06I think it was like an 11 or 15 hour drive came to the game.
- 2:09They're already on their way back to Canada where they work
- 2:12on the family farm. But you guys, so many special
- 2:15moments happening on the gold carpet.
- 2:17I had a chance to to catch up with Brady Martin's mom.
- 2:21We all, we all saw it. Some videos have been posted.
- 2:24He, Brady walked the gold carpet, saw his family, his mom
- 2:28for the first time in six weeks. They embraced in this hug.
- 2:33People started chanting Brady. I mean, it was just one of those
- 2:37tearjerker moments and it was just really neat.
- 2:40So I, I, I caught up with her and I asked about being here
- 2:44with Brady and she told me she goes, you know, he's my person.
- 2:48She goes. His dad was always working on
- 2:50the farm. It was him and I who who were
- 2:52doing the road trips together, going to the hockey rinks, doing
- 2:55the miles, she said. I'm so proud of him.
- 2:58And she was. One thing about him, he's an
- 3:01underdog. He's going to outwork you.
- 3:03He's the hardest working kid I know and he's here.
- 3:07He's going to take your job. And guys, that's why he was
- 3:10starting on the top line last night with Philip Forsberg and
- 3:13Ryan O'Reilly. He earned that position.
- 3:15And Brooks, you were there, you witness it all.
- 3:18It was it was really a special moment.
- 3:21Yeah, that to to see him embrace his family care, as you said, at
- 3:25the end of the gold carpet. He didn't know they were going
- 3:27to be there. And it was one of the one of the
- 3:31best hugs that I've ever witnessed in person.
- 3:33I mean, you could just see. You could see the pride from his
- 3:37parents, especially. It was a beautiful moment with
- 3:40his mom and his dad. And as you said, his siblings
- 3:43and 30 friends and family, a lot of them rocking the bright red
- 3:47Sioux Greyhounds jerseys as well.
- 3:50They had just gotten there. They had just literally gotten
- 3:52out of the car, got to the hotel, freshened up a little
- 3:54bit, came over to the arena and, and what a special night.
- 3:58And it it wasn't perfect, right? It's never going to be when
- 4:01you're 18 years old, you're going up against men.
- 4:03I think one of the quotes of the night was Brady Martin saying
- 4:06after the fact that he was involved in a little bit of a
- 4:08scrum in the third period in front of the net.
- 4:11And he was like, yeah, I think I've got to hit the gym.
- 4:13I've realized that everybody out there stronger than I am, which
- 4:16is, again, when you're 18 going against 2530 year olds, that's
- 4:20what's going to happen. But what a just a really
- 4:23memorable night for Brady Martin, and certainly the first
- 4:27of many games in the National Hockey League.
- 4:30And you'll guys get a kick out of this.
- 4:32We know that he lived with Phil for a little bit over the summer
- 4:35when he was here starting camp. I asked his mom about that and
- 4:39she said Phil is amazing. They took him in, They were his
- 4:43second family. Here she goes.
- 4:45But one thing about it is Phil is really healthy.
- 4:47He doesn't eat any junk food. So she told me that it was Aaron
- 4:51who had a secret snack cupboard and was showing Brady.
- 4:55This is where we hide the doughnuts because he was trying
- 4:57to beef up a little bit. So maybe he needs to go back to
- 5:00the forest burgs and have Aaron show him hey, the secret stash
- 5:03in their house. Oh my God, that's so funny.
- 5:07That's the type of stuff that makes hockey so special.
- 5:09So shout out to Brady Martin's crew, his parents, his three
- 5:13siblings, two of which look literally exactly like him by
- 5:17the way, his girlfriend, coaches, tons of friends from
- 5:21Elmira and friends and coaches from the Sioux all came down to
- 5:24Smashville. So happy to have them.
- 5:26And they also absolutely raided the Preds team store before the
- 5:31game. I think they actually got a
- 5:33private session in the team store to get some 44 jerseys
- 5:37ready for Brady Martin's NHL debut.
- 5:40It wasn't just the Martin crew on the gold walk, guys.
- 5:42We had Fred's kiddos everywhere coming down the gold carpet with
- 5:47their dads. I don't even know who to start
- 5:50with, but I guess we'll go in ascending age order with the new
- 5:54record for the youngest baby to ever be carried down the gold
- 5:58walk. 13 year old sorry 13 day old baby boy Beau Bunting,
- 6:06carried by Michael Bunting who scored the first goal of the
- 6:09season as a first time dad. Well, you, you talk about new
- 6:13dad energy, right? I, I would have to imagine, I, I
- 6:16don't know if either of you got a chance to talk to him.
- 6:18I would have to imagine though, that puck is going to bow and
- 6:22you love when that happens. It happens so often in the NHLI
- 6:25don't know about other sports when guys have kids and they
- 6:27come back if they hit a home run or pass for a touchdown or
- 6:31anything like that. But in hockey, I love when it
- 6:33happens because it just seems to happen.
- 6:35And it was a perfect way to start the season.
- 6:37Michael Bunting the loud line getting on the board there with
- 6:41just a little bit of a ricochet into the twine.
- 6:44And yeah, nice little present for Bo there.
- 6:46And yeah, I totally agree, Max, there's, there's no way that
- 6:49there's anyone younger than two weeks that has ever made their
- 6:53way down the gold carpet. As you guys know, we've added
- 6:58Mike Kelly to our our FanDuel broadcast and he's bringing up
- 7:01stats all season long throughout the game.
- 7:04But we may need to have this stat.
- 7:05How many Preds players have had a baby and come back and scored
- 7:09a goal? Because I know I've covered
- 7:11numerous instances of this happening and Michael Bunting
- 7:15came out for my first intermission interview.
- 7:18And the first thing I said to him was, hey, that's that new
- 7:19dad strength. And he goes new dad goal.
- 7:22And I'm like, yes, here we go. So it wasn't just Michael
- 7:26Bunting that line. They had had so much chemistry
- 7:28during training camp, Eric College, Jonathan Marsha.
- 7:31So Michael Bunting and that really seemed to carry over.
- 7:37Yeah, and Eric Hall, Excuse me, Eric Holland may have won my
- 7:44award for cutest kids on the Gold Walk.
- 7:47We had a lot of cute kids out there.
- 7:49His two little boys were running the show and one of them just
- 7:53took off. He was a runner.
- 7:56He was the fastest kid alive. And they were super, super cute.
- 7:59So great to have the whole hall of family of four here in
- 8:03Smashville after the last time he was here, COVID was going on.
- 8:06He just had a baby. He said in his preseason press
- 8:10conference that he was just sleeping on a mattress on the
- 8:12floor. That's how not settled he was
- 8:15the last time he was on the Preds.
- 8:16And now this time he has made-up for it by moving into Gus
- 8:20Nyquist's house, which Halla said is a mansion.
- 8:26So the Hall family is living well right now. 2 cute little
- 8:28boys welcome them to the Preds Gold Walk for the first time.
- 8:34Yeah, they were out there running around the, the Stamkos
- 8:37kids were there. The O'reilly's have a gaggle of
- 8:39children. Yeah, it was I, you know, I, we
- 8:42don't keep official records on this, but I've got to think it
- 8:45would, it may have been the most highly attended Gold Walk for
- 8:49children of predators players. Of course the OC kids were out
- 8:53there. The eldest Mccarran child, the
- 8:56new one was not specifically on the Gold Walk.
- 8:59We hear the, the boy Jett was out there.
- 9:03But yeah, what a, what a fun way to start out and what a great
- 9:07night it was overall. I mean, it, it wasn't perfect.
- 9:10It never is on opening night. But they don't ask how, they ask
- 9:14how many. And it took the Predators six
- 9:17games to get one win last season.
- 9:20We all know that it took them just under 3 hours in the new
- 9:23season to get win #1 that just what that does for your mental
- 9:29psyche that to have a really good camp.
- 9:31But it's all talk until you actually go out there and do it.
- 9:35And to get that first one and have something to build off of.
- 9:38Going into Saturday against Utah is just such an important way to
- 9:43start this season, especially the way that things went last
- 9:47year. That was the way the Preds were
- 9:50going to have to win this game. close game.
- 9:53Great goaltending from UC Soros #1 star with a ho hum. 37 saves
- 9:59to start the season. Opening night.
- 10:01It's made it look easy, but the the new things worked.
- 10:04The new D zone system allowed Soros to see a lot of those
- 10:07shots, make some good clean saves, earn that win and goal.
- 10:11The second period was not good. Predators probably deserved to
- 10:14be trailing coming out of that second period, but they got a
- 10:17good penalty kill toward the end.
- 10:19UC Sorrows made some big saves and even strength along the way,
- 10:22and then the Blue Jackets had their goal overturned on a
- 10:25successful goalie interference challenge by the Preds.
- 10:28Set the stage and gave the Preds a little bit of momentum to come
- 10:31out as the better team in the third period.
- 10:33Score the early power play goal by Ryan O'Reilly that became the
- 10:36game winner. Beautiful goal from O'Reilly
- 10:39going backhand. Top shelf on Jet grieves in
- 10:43tight on the power play. And then from there, the Preds
- 10:46almost never gave the Blue Jackets the puck back.
- 10:49That's how you protect the lead and that's how you earn an
- 10:51opening night When. And that's exactly what Ryan
- 10:54O'Reilly talked about in the post game, that third period,
- 10:56that's exactly what the Predators hope to be more often
- 11:00than not, the way that they played in that third period, up
- 11:03on their toes in people's faces, not allowing Columbus a whole
- 11:07heck of a lot. As you said, Max, you see, Soros
- 11:09was excellent. He needed to be it.
- 11:11It could have been the Jackets, certainly could have had a few
- 11:14there in the first couple of periods.
- 11:16They only got 1 and for Nashville to not only lock it
- 11:20down in the third but continue to push, they could have had a
- 11:23couple more easily in the third period as well.
- 11:25The Preds could have. And you mentioned Ryan
- 11:27O'reilly's goal. You got to throw this stat out.
- 11:30So it was Philip Forsberg on the primary assist.
- 11:33It is now 10 straight season opening games that Philip
- 11:37Forsberg has recorded a point counted up Max 10.
- 11:40He's one of only five players in recent memory to hit that
- 11:44streak. So what a night for Philip
- 11:47Forsberg, what a night for the Preds.
- 11:50And again, I, I just think that that third period, the way that
- 11:53the Preds showed in that setting, to be able to build off
- 11:56of that, that's really something you can take away going forward.
- 11:59Lots to clean up, as Ryan O'Reilly said, but also a great
- 12:02building block in that final frame.
- 12:06Yeah, fun for sure and we get to do it again Saturday night in
- 12:09Smashville. Saturday, October 11th.
- 12:12We hope to see you here at Bridgestone Arena as the
- 12:14Predators take on the recently renamed Utah Mammoth in the
- 12:21first ever Ice Age Rivalry game. It's here at Bridgestone Arena
- 12:25and those of you watching on video, I actually have something
- 12:27to show you. So the Ice Age rivalry at
- 12:30Saturday's game are presented by our friends at IC.
- 12:34The Icy Bear has his Pred sweater on and you can get these
- 12:39Icy Fang Freeze cups at Bridgestone Arena.
- 12:43They will be discounted. On Saturday you get one, then
- 12:47you can bring it back and keep refilling it for a lower price
- 12:51all season. With the Icy Bear.
- 12:54You can get it at the concession stands at section 10612208 and
- 12:59301. If you want to see this one in
- 13:02person, come see us at the Jack Daniels Barrel House where we
- 13:06have lots of fun stuff on display.
- 13:08But I love the icy bear. Yeah, well, like we saw Fetters
- 13:12fetch off skipping down the gold carpet.
- 13:14I'm sure we'll see Brooks and his Brooks Whites on his way to
- 13:17grab one of those. Icy is They're not just for
- 13:20movie theaters anymore. No, that's great.
- 13:24I, I, that's a there's a lot of great promotions honestly going
- 13:28on, but it was a great atmosphere in the building too,
- 13:30last night. I think that's one thing that,
- 13:31you know, going into opening night.
- 13:33Philip Forsberg said he expected greatness from the Predators
- 13:36fans. They delivered on opening night
- 13:38and we'll certainly expect more of the same on Saturday.
- 13:42But what a fun way to start our Friday morning just a little
- 13:46waking up and talking about a Predator's win.
- 13:48No better way to start the day. Yeah, we'll see everybody
- 13:52Saturday night in Smashville at Bridgestone Arena.
