Speaker 1: His name is Doug Foley.
• 1:08
Speaker 1: Doug, good morning to you, oh gosh.
• 1:13
  Speaker 4: Doug, we're muted.
• 1:14
Speaker 4: No he's not muted, we're just not getting his voice here.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: Doug, can you say something to us?
• 1:19
Speaker 2: There you are, a little better now.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a little bit better now.
• 1:25
Speaker 2: All right, how are you guys now?
• 1:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a little bit better now.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: All right, how are you guys doing?
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Oh my God, he's kind of gargley, isn't he?
• 1:32
  Speaker 1: Mr?
• 1:32
Speaker 4: Mars yeah, his Internet.
• 1:33
Speaker 4: If he moves to the wrong place, his Internet drops.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, your Internet sucks, so we're going to put you on hold for a minute.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: You and Mars are going to work out this so we can hear every stinking word you got to say.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: So you just hang in there.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: Mr Mars will lead you through what we need to go through.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: Oh Lord, are you sure you want him to do that?
• 1:50
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: I'm not sure about that, so I will give you this IHRA.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: They were a force back in the day and they were the competitor to NHRA.
• 2:03
Speaker 1: And different rules, different regulations, different sanctioned racetracks, different cars.
• 2:10
  Speaker 1: Well, they were.
• 2:12
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, Well, because of the different rules, the car builders built cars to the IHRA rules as opposed to the NHRA rules.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: So there was this kind of a divide there as opposed to the NHRA rules.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: So there was this kind of a divide there.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: It was founded in 1971 by Larry Carrier, has since become a prominent organization for grassroots drag racing, including the IHRA Summit Super Series, a prominent bracket racing championship.
• 2:40
Speaker 1: In recent years, IHRA has seen ownership changes and a renewed focus on its core values of integrity and passion for the sport, and so I told you that we're talking about.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: Larry Carrier started it in 71.
• 2:53
Speaker 1: And the events are different and at different racetracks.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: It started at Carrier's Bristol International Speedway Dragway.
• 3:07
  Speaker 1: It says here.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: Ihra sanctions races across North America, with a particularly strong presence in Canada, where it holds three national drag racing events, according to Wikipedia.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: Now that'd be a fun road trip.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, Go to Canada.
• 3:22
  Speaker 1: Grassroots Focus.
• 3:24
Speaker 1: Ihra has found success as a hub for grassroots drag racing, with its Summit Super Series being a notable example of its commitment to bracket racing.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: In recent years, IHRA has undergone ownership changes, Daryl Cattell becoming the new owner of the organization has also seen a renewed focus on free speech.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: Has also seen a renewed focus on free speech, equal opportunities and a fact-based approach, reflected in its return to the X social media platform, says Xcom.
• 3:54
Speaker 4: I think Doug's got his internet connection hooked up right or better.
• 3:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think we're good to go Well.
• 3:59
Speaker 1: I think that we'll be the judge of that.
• 4:01
Speaker 4: He's smiling, so I know he can hear us.
• 4:03
Speaker 1: Say something good, Doug how about now.
• 4:06
Speaker 2: How's this, oh my God.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: You plugged it from the TV remote into the actual Internet.
• 4:12
  Speaker 2: Listen.
• 4:13
Speaker 2: Technology sometimes is difficult.
• 4:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not my friend very often it eludes some of us and, believe me, we can understand.
• 4:22
  Speaker 3: Welcome, Doug Welcome.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: Well, thank you guys for having me.
• 4:25
Speaker 2: I've been able to hear you the whole time.
• 4:27
Speaker 1: Oh good, I'm glad to hear that, because you know, I remember when IHRA come into existence and NHRA was really scared because they thought, oh gosh, what are we going to do?
• 4:37
Speaker 1: We've got some competition here.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: Well, good, competition is good and I guess what divided the two you correct me if I'm wrong were the different rules for the different categories of cars, because not all of the rules from one series transferred to the other and if you wanted to race in both series, generally speaking, if you had the money, you had two cars, because some of the changes that you had to make to the cars were significant back in the day yeah, I think that played a part in some of it.
• 5:10
Speaker 2: But uh, you know, the ihra is usually ran between 8 and 12 national event races, so that that plays a big part in it too.
• 5:17
Speaker 2: You know, especially on the professional side.
• 5:19
Speaker 2: Uh, you know these guys that run 20 races, they're spending three or four million dollars a year when you can come over to the IHRA and we have, you know, this year we have five national events and you know you cut that budget in half, if not more.
• 5:34
Speaker 2: So it's a little more rac the working folk than just the guys that own billion-dollar corporations that can afford to come out and, you know, realistically outspend everybody else, right?
• 5:52
Speaker 1: What are the top ten, top eight, however many you want to put together there.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: Classes of cars do you have you got nitro cars?
• 6:02
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so we'll have top fuel funny car, which, uh, we opened up our pre uh pre-entry a couple of weeks, a week ago or so, and so we have eight car fields in both of our nitro categories and we have more than eight entered in each class, so I have full fields.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: Um, we have pro mod uh, mountain motor, pro stock, pro nitrous top alcohol dragster top alcohol, funny car.
• 6:23
Speaker 2: Pro Nitrous Top Alcohol Dragster Top Alcohol Funny Car.
• 6:26
Speaker 2: So that's probably our upper echelon of our faster cars.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, do you kind of intermingle with the NHRA, because I know that they do run Pro Mods and things and you can see a telecast on some of their events, but not as a feature.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: So do you kind of intermingle with that?
• 6:44
Speaker 2: other events- we don't really have anything to do with NHRA, but that the cars and the classes and the rules, you know they're all similar enough to where you can come over and race either sanctioning body and still, you know, not have to spend a fortune to be able to do so.
• 7:06
Speaker 1: Well, one of the categories new categories for NHRA is the mountain motor category, and I heard you say that you've got that at IHRA as well.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: What is mountain motor?
• 7:17
Speaker 1: What exactly is that?
• 7:19
Speaker 2: Mountain motors are just big cubic inch pro stock cars, so they're still allowed to have carburetors, they have the hood scoops, but they have big motors, big horsepower and they're going, you know, 620s at 200 and almost 30 miles an hour.
• 7:36
Speaker 2: So they're a little different than the 500 cubic inch pro stock cars that everybody's kind of used to seeing.
• 7:42
Speaker 2: But Mountain Motor Pro Stock is, uh, it was born and bred here at ihra, so that's a, it's a class that's near and dear to us and the uh, the interest level that we have for this class right now has surpassed our expectations, uh, coming into this year.
• 7:59
Speaker 2: So, um, we're, we're really looking forward to having those guys back.
• 8:04
Speaker 1: How did you get involved with IHRA?
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Well, so I grew up, my dad races Top Fuel and he started in IHRA back in 2003.
• 8:14
Speaker 2: He won the Rookie of the Year back then in Top Fuel and then he obviously has kept racing the last 20-something years.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: And when Larry Jeffers bought the IHRA a few years ago, he gave me a call and wanted to see if I had any interest in coming on board and helping out.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: And then at the end of 24, larry Jeffers sold it to Darryl Cuddle and we've been rolling right along.
• 8:44
Speaker 2: We bought, I think think ihra owns five race tracks now.
• 8:49
Speaker 2: I'm actually at one right now.
• 8:51
Speaker 2: We have our night of fire event here at uh national trail raceway in columbus ohio.
• 8:56
Speaker 2: So when you say, if you hear burnouts in the background.
• 8:59
  Speaker 4: That's why that'd be great.
• 9:00
Speaker 4: But when you say you bought the, the organization bought the track, you didn't just buy rights to it, I mean you physically own the property.
• 9:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, we physically own the property.
• 9:10
Speaker 1: Well, nhra has got several tracks like that as well.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: So it's a full quarter mile right.
• 9:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, national Trail is a full quarter mile facility.
• 9:16
Speaker 2: We also own Galop Motorsports Park Down in Dunn, north Carolina.
• 9:20
Speaker 2: We own Kill Care Raceway Xenia, ohio, milan Dragway, which is inia Ohio, milan Dragway, which is in Milan, michigan.
• 9:27
Speaker 2: So we've got quite a few tracks that have been purchased.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: We've got quite a few more that are on the docket.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: To close here, you said, you've got eight drivers or eight cars in a class.
• 9:43
Speaker 3: Do they follow you around the country?
• 9:44
Speaker 3: Or is it just eight for this particular event and then you've got eight more for another part of the country?
• 9:50
Speaker 2: uh, no, so we?
• 9:51
Speaker 2: I mean, you know there's cars that are going to race full-time with us.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: Uh, you know, the nitro cars that have committed to full-time racing with the ihra this year is scott palmer, dale creasy, jr, um jack, why White?
• 10:06
Speaker 2: Terry Haddock is coming to most of them, so we have a good.
• 10:10
Speaker 2: You know, we didn't start this deal really until beginning of May, end of April, beginning of May for this year, so obviously there's been a lot of talk about it but going out and actually doing it.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: Now we're two weeks away from crowning champions at our first event.
• 10:27
  Speaker 2: Cool, uh.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: Since the ihra has been bought and rebranded, the ihra hasn't had a top fuel car race, uh, in over 15 years wow.
• 10:37
Speaker 1: Well, now you got a full field of cars.
• 10:40
Speaker 2: Have a full field of cars.
• 10:41
  Speaker 2: There's a lot of excitement.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: Uh, you know a top fuel funny car that pays $50,000 to win.
• 10:47
Speaker 2: It pays $15,000 just to qualify.
• 10:51
Speaker 1: Well, your dad didn't?
• 10:54
Speaker 1: He used to race at NHRA.
• 10:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's actually up at Norwalk this weekend, gotcha, yeah, but he'll be down here.
• 11:02
Speaker 2: He's bringing his car out.
• 11:04
Speaker 2: He's got a few sponsors right here in Columbus with United Garage Door and Alloy Employer Services, so this will be a big race for him being able to get all of his guests out here and check out the drag races.
• 11:16
Speaker 1: So you've been going to drag races since you were born.
• 11:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, just about that's right.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: Well, obviously it's worked out for you.
• 11:24
  Speaker 1: You're a division director.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: Which division are you running?
• 11:27
Speaker 2: So I've run Division I and IX basically up and down the East Coast.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a full-time gig for you.
• 11:34
  Speaker 2: Full-time, full-time as it gets.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: Do you still have a full head of hair?
• 11:39
Speaker 2: So far, but it's turning gray pretty quickly Turning grayer.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say there's big chunks missing from pulling your hair out.
• 11:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what the next step is after that.
• 11:47
  Speaker 3: What's that?
• 11:48
  Speaker 3: Well, we'll see.
• 11:49
  Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see.
• 11:52
  Speaker 4: Exactly.
• 11:52
Speaker 4: I kind of like the idea of the eight-car field.
• 11:55
Speaker 4: I mean things are going to move pretty quick when you go to the track and you're not going to be sitting there for three hours trying to get 16 cars through because one of them blew up or whatever, whatever.
• 12:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, and part of it is obviously the group we have here at IHRA.
• 12:10
  Speaker 2: We're all racers.
• 12:11
Speaker 2: So you know, josh Peek is here, larry Morgan, the old Larry.
• 12:18
  Speaker 1: Morgan.
• 12:19
  Speaker 2: Yeah, he here.
• 12:19
Speaker 2: Larry Morgan, the old Larry Morgan.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's one of a kind.
• 12:26
Speaker 2: He's done it his whole life and we're really glad he's part of this.
• 12:31
Speaker 2: He's instrumental in this operation.
• 12:35
Speaker 2: So having all of these racers here, we kind of can pick and choose.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: You know what we want to adopt and what we don't want to adopt.
• 12:46
Speaker 2: And you know our shows are two-day shows, friday and Saturday.
• 12:52
Speaker 2: You know you've got two qualifying runs Friday and then eliminations on Saturday.
• 12:57
Speaker 2: So that's one of the big things with the Nitro teams is, you know you've got four qualifying runs and it's a 16-car field, so you have to make eight runs to win $50,000.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: Over here at IHRA our winner's purse is $50,000, but you only have to make five runs to get there.
• 13:20
Speaker 3: Are the rules for IHRA?
• 13:22
Speaker 3: Are they pretty much the same as NHRA?
• 13:23
Speaker 3: I'm sure you've got to have all the safety effects in place All the safety.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, all the rules basically are the same.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: I think we're trying to make it a little more racer-friendly with being able to open up a few different options.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: There's a lot of top fuel cars in this country and you know between the states and Canada there's a lot of nitro cars, that some of them just you know there are some rules that I don't feel that are that necessary, that these teams have to park their cars because they couldn't afford to do those updates to their cars or ignition boxes or whatever the rules are.
• 14:02
Speaker 2: Whatever that particular rule is, it gets expensive quick.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: A lot of fans don't know that these top fuel cars they have to send out their valve covers every year to get recertified, their bell housings every year to get recertified their bell housings every year to get recertified the blower, restraint bags, I mean.
• 14:23
Speaker 2: The list goes on and on Just to do that.
• 14:25
Speaker 2: You're talking thousands and thousands of dollars.
• 14:28
Speaker 2: So if we could not that we're eliminating that.
• 14:33
Speaker 2: But that was just a kind of an example, sure.
• 14:35
  Speaker 3: Insight.
• 14:35
Speaker 3: You know that, but that was just a you know kind of an example insight, you know.
• 14:39
Speaker 1: Let me ask you a little bit about the insurance aspect of it that you guys apparently provide significant insurance coverage for your members.
• 14:48
Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about that.
• 14:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, our insurance is next level compared to it's not even just drag racing, I mean any, uh, any racing sanctioning body.
• 15:03
Speaker 2: You know we have surpassed all of them.
• 15:06
Speaker 2: So, uh, we have, yeah, a million dollars worth of liability insurance for each racer.
• 15:12
Speaker 2: So if you aren't a, uh, if we have accidental death, dismemberment insurance, we have.
• 15:19
Speaker 2: You know, if you get hurt at the racetrack, there's you can get paid up to whatever 26 weeks or something like that for workers comp.
• 15:29
Speaker 2: Like we, we're trying to make it to where it's we're we're we're not trying to copy anybody else.
• 15:36
Speaker 2: We're not trying to copy anybody else.
• 15:38
Speaker 2: We want to set out into our own thing and make the racers kind of see what we can.
• 15:43
Speaker 2: We want to do whatever we can to make it better for everybody and not just do the same old song and dance Gotcha.
• 15:50
Speaker 1: So when is your big event at the end of the season?
• 15:53
Speaker 1: Where is that and when is it?
• 15:55
Speaker 2: So our world finals will be at Gallop Motorsports Park, which is Dunn, North Carolina, and that's November 5th through the 8th.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: But our first one, our season opener, kicks off here, like I said, in just two weeks here at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, which is just east of Columbus, probably about 30 miles.
• 16:15
Speaker 2: But that's our first one.
• 16:17
Speaker 2: It'll be July 9th through the 12th and you'll be able to see a full slate of top fuel cars, funny cars, all the way through stock, super stock.
• 16:26
Speaker 1: I assume that you don't have a big television contract.
• 16:28
Speaker 1: Can you watch the races online?
• 16:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, you will be able to.
• 16:32
Speaker 2: The races will be live streamed.
• 16:34
Speaker 2: We haven't announced with who yet, but that'll be coming pretty early this week.
• 16:39
Speaker 2: So we're looking forward to that and I think all the fans at home that won't be able to make it out to the races will appreciate it as well.
• 16:47
Speaker 3: As long as it's not on Prime, yeah that's it.
• 16:49
  Speaker 3: So is it.
• 16:51
  Speaker 1: IHRAcom.
• 16:51
Speaker 1: Doug, Is it IHRAcom?
• 16:55
  Speaker 2: Yep, ihracom.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: You can go on there and look at the schedule, buy your tickets and then on our Facebook page we've been releasing some of the drivers' names that have entered for our events.
• 17:07
Speaker 2: So, like I said, scott Palmer, he's entered.
• 17:12
  Speaker 2: Krista Baldwin's coming.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: Dale Creasy, jack Wyatt, terry Haddock.
• 17:16
  Speaker 1: Doug Foley.
• 17:16
  Speaker 1: Doug Foley.
• 17:18
