- 0:03hey everyone
- 0:03welcome back to the Eye Believe Podcast
- 0:05today we have Adrian Franco with us
- 0:08welcome Adrian
- 0:09thank you so much Megan
- 0:11I'm very happy to be here
- 0:13well we're excited to have you
- 0:14we're gonna talk today about his organization
- 0:18called Broken Not Broke
- 0:19tell us a little bit about what your organization is
- 0:22and what you do
- 0:24Broken Not Broke
- 0:25is an initiative of the Guarini Institute
- 0:28at Kean University and this initiative specifically
- 0:32focuses on connecting families
- 0:35impacted by childhood cancer
- 0:37with resources specifically financial assistance
- 0:40we use a website that feeds
- 0:44from a database of more than 500 organizations
- 0:47in United States in all 50 states and Puerto Rico
- 0:50that support families impacted by childhood cancer
- 0:53that's amazing
- 0:55so let's talk a little bit about your story
- 0:58what led you to find this calling in life
- 1:02well
- 1:03I would say it's a product of two different elements
- 1:06on one hand is a personal experience
- 1:08and on another hand is just a career
- 1:12interested in topics related to financial education
- 1:16let me start with a personal story
- 1:18in 2022
- 1:21my three year old was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma
- 1:23a rare cancer of the bones
- 1:25and from there like many
- 1:27many parent or any other caregiver will tell you
- 1:30a tsunami hits the family
- 1:32and you have to adjust many things
- 1:34to make sure you focus on the treatment of your child
- 1:37so it has been years
- 1:39I estimate more than 2,000 hours in the hospital
- 1:43of everything from chemotherapy to radiation
- 1:46to surgeries emergency rooms etcetera uh
- 1:50I'm very happy uh
- 1:52to share that he is stable right now
- 1:54under monitoring but doing well
- 1:57but during all those hours at the hospital
- 2:00I had the opportunity to observe the
- 2:04the ecosystem of childhood cancer
- 2:05and when I talk ecosystem
- 2:07I say it very respectfully
- 2:08in terms of other families
- 2:11caregivers patients
- 2:13social workers nurses
- 2:15child life specialist and everyone who is working um
- 2:20for the treatment and survivor of patients
- 2:24within that I noticed something very specific
- 2:27and that was the financial impact of a diagnosis
- 2:31treatment and then actually during the
- 2:34the years after treatment
- 2:36I was very interested again
- 2:37because I had a career
- 2:39long term interest in personal education eh
- 2:43related to finance financial literacy
- 2:46and how that affects economic mobility
- 2:49so putting all those together
- 2:51it turns out that you know
- 2:52the impact of uh
- 2:54of a diagnosis in cancer for any patient
- 2:56but specifically when it's a case of a
- 2:59of a children the pediatric cases
- 3:02is not only short term when it's very acute
- 3:06it lingers for years sometimes decades
- 3:10and I think there is a lot of very good research
- 3:14and programs working on the short term impact
- 3:18many financial assistance programs from foundations
- 3:21from public sources
- 3:24eh but there's not a lot of information
- 3:26of the long term consequences
- 3:28what I will call
- 3:28the economic mobility consequences of this shock
- 3:33those two elements came together for me to say well
- 3:37what's the best way to support families
- 3:41and support social workers looking for these resources
- 3:45how that's how broken or broke was born
- 3:48that's amazing I'm so glad to hear that
- 3:50your son is doing well right now
- 3:52how old is he he's 7 years old right now
- 3:55oh thank you
- 3:55that's amazing good
- 3:57well we're very happy to hear that
- 3:58and what a great way to honor him and celebrate him
- 4:03to do something that you're helping so many families
- 4:06this is really amazing and I think that
- 4:09like you said everything is so overwhelming
- 4:11you're overwhelmed
- 4:12with a million different pieces of it
- 4:14this is just one piece of it
- 4:15so to be able to help somebody with probably
- 4:18you know one of the things that I think
- 4:20is the hardest to figure out is
- 4:22how do you pay for this and where are the resources
- 4:25and there are so many that are not known
- 4:29and easy to find
- 4:31so if someone is in the early parts of this
- 4:35or I guess
- 4:35any part of it where they're looking for financial aid
- 4:39what do you recommend they do how do they start
- 4:44so in most of the cases
- 4:45the social workers play a critical role
- 4:49they are the ones in the hospital
- 4:50who are in direct contact with the families
- 4:54and trying to find these resources
- 4:56from external sources
- 4:59conversation with social workers
- 5:01I hear that they are like detectives
- 5:04they are constantly looking for these resources
- 5:06and one of them even told me
- 5:08that 70% of her time was dedicating
- 5:11looking for financial assistance for families
- 5:14now a common misconception
- 5:16is that this will go to the families
- 5:18that are either under the poverty line
- 5:20the lower income families
- 5:21that is not correct
- 5:23the financial impact of childhood cancer
- 5:25happens to every single family
- 5:28regardless of income and wealth and assets
- 5:32therefore there is need to support families
- 5:34of all levels of income and economic mobility
- 5:41you know going back to
- 5:42to your question what do you do
- 5:44well first of all
- 5:46the shock is so
- 5:47so large in terms of your expenses going very
- 5:50very high
- 5:51everything from medical expenses out of pocket
- 5:55uh premiums will increase and deductibles
- 6:00and then other aspects
- 6:03like transportation cost to a treatment center
- 6:05that can go from a commute in the subway
- 6:09in a large city
- 6:10to having to take a flight from a rural area
- 6:13to a treatment center
- 6:15we're talking about parking cost
- 6:17housing cost we're talking about food
- 6:20that changes completely childcare
- 6:22one of the most important ones
- 6:24because you need to find childcare
- 6:26not only for the patient
- 6:27but siblings if that's the case of the family
- 6:31so with all these you suddenly are
- 6:33you know overwhelmed with the emotions of
- 6:36of a treatment for cancer
- 6:38but also the financial eh
- 6:41changes eh
- 6:42in in your family
- 6:44what do you do well
- 6:46there is a lot of resources out there
- 6:49and that was one of the first things I discovered
- 6:52I said well
- 6:53I keep hearing stories of evictions
- 6:56bankruptcies small business
- 6:58you know that have to close and jobs being lost
- 7:03why is that is that there's not enough money
- 7:05well there's always room for more money
- 7:08but the reality is that the
- 7:10there is so many organizations out there
- 7:12as I said you know
- 7:13500 of non profit organizations
- 7:17that sometimes it's difficult to find them
- 7:19so I thought well
- 7:20maybe
- 7:21the best way to really bring something to the table
- 7:24is to connect the dots and that means
- 7:27creating a database that people can access
- 7:30in a very simple way with no
- 7:34you know no registration
- 7:36no need to to
- 7:38to give your your personal information nothing
- 7:41just go to our website BrokenNotBroke.org
- 7:45say what type of cancer your child has
- 7:48what type of assistance you need
- 7:50and very important which state you are residing
- 7:54and we'll give you a list of organizations that you
- 7:57or your social worker can contact
- 7:59that's amazing I love that
- 8:00you're bringing all of these resources together
- 8:03in a way that people can find them easily
- 8:04without having to scour the entire internet
- 8:06I may think this is a huge
- 8:08huge resource for people
- 8:10so as you were founding the organization
- 8:12what was your next step
- 8:15well we always saw ourselves as as
- 8:17as a way to connect the dots
- 8:19connect the resources with the people that need it
- 8:21and in this case is families
- 8:23but also social workers and other people
- 8:25within the ecosystem of childhood cancer
- 8:28after we create that database
- 8:29and we start sending it to foundations
- 8:31to social workers to families
- 8:32to hospitals you know
- 8:34we realize that one key issue is that besides
- 8:37you know just looking at the name of the organization
- 8:41that you might be familiar with
- 8:43like big organizations like the Ronald McDonald Houses
- 8:47um or not
- 8:48because they are very small and very specific
- 8:51it's important to put a face
- 8:53it's important to put a a
- 8:54a human behind that organizations
- 8:58so for families will be able to feel the
- 9:02the support the empathy in it
- 9:04so I wanted to interview
- 9:06the leaders of these organizations
- 9:08so they can tell us you know
- 9:10first hand their story
- 9:12why are they doing this
- 9:14and the programs that they share
- 9:16and the programs that they have for these families
- 9:20so the Broken Not Broke Interview
- 9:22a podcast started in 2025 to talk to the leaders
- 9:28organizations I'm talking about CEOs
- 9:30executive directors sometimes our founders
- 9:33sometimes our board members
- 9:35and they also tell us you know
- 9:37specifically what they do for families
- 9:41I like to ask them about their programs
- 9:43I like to ask them about you know
- 9:45the financial assistant they offer any guidance
- 9:49advice that they can give
- 9:51but also about you know
- 9:53many systemic changes or policy changes
- 9:56that they believe is worth to advocate for
- 9:59and all this information I think
- 10:02it's important for for families to
- 10:04to hear because first
- 10:06you learn and the more that you learn about an illness
- 10:09like cancer the more that you
- 10:11you can use these resources and advocate for your child
- 10:17but second that
- 10:18you know you just see someone telling you the story and
- 10:20and realize that you know
- 10:21these people are there to support these very
- 10:24very difficult times
- 10:26so we started interviewing people and um
- 10:29has been you know
- 10:30a pretty successful uh
- 10:32we were very happy to interview uh
- 10:35A Cure In Sight obviously
- 10:37and uh
- 10:37we
- 10:37we love so many things we learn from the organization
- 10:40the the innovation that they bring to the table
- 10:43all things are are elements that bring hope to families
- 10:47that are in very challenging times
- 10:50that's fantastic
- 10:51that's a lot of the reason our podcast was started
- 10:53as well was just to educate and get it out there
- 10:57and it's really an amazing tool to be able to do
- 11:00you know times have changed so much now
- 11:03you know before you
- 11:04if you didn't have a million dollars
- 11:06you couldn't be on TV
- 11:07and so now being able to have these podcast platforms
- 11:09it's such a huge resource that we can utilize
- 11:13what platforms are you guys on
- 11:16well you can find us in YouTube and Spotify
- 11:19and we also have you know
- 11:20we in the socials
- 11:21you can obviously click you know Instagram Facebook
- 11:25LinkedIn eh and
- 11:27and go there but you can hear us in Spotify
- 11:30you can watch us in YouTube
- 11:32perfect I love that
- 11:33that's amazing so how long has your podcast been going
- 11:38we started uh
- 11:39last year in 2025
- 11:41at the beginning of the year
- 11:43fantastic that's awesome
- 11:45so like you said a Cure Insight was featured
- 11:48our founder and president
- 11:49melody was on um
- 11:51so thank you for having us on
- 11:52that was huge and we
- 11:54we love to collaborate so
- 11:55and we're happy to have you on
- 11:56and get your information out
- 11:57cause it's so important
- 12:00well thank you so much for the opportunity
- 12:02you know we we
- 12:03we try to connect the dots
- 12:05as I said I mean
- 12:06that's the way that we believe we can contribute
- 12:08and support families in this uh
- 12:11difficult times and the more than people know about us
- 12:15the more people that go to the website or contact us
- 12:19we have a a contact form
- 12:21and as soon as they some
- 12:22someone sends a message
- 12:23I personally will respond to that message
- 12:26some people ask specifics about foundations
- 12:29you know we
- 12:29we hear cases like you know
- 12:30I couldn't find this uh
- 12:32any organization in this state that support uh
- 12:35leukemia we found it for them
- 12:38and then we connect um
- 12:40some people just just wants
- 12:41you know someone to
- 12:43to know that their their story is tough
- 12:45and if there is resources for them
- 12:47we say we always can support with that
- 12:49so contact us and we'll we'll be there for you
- 12:53I think that's a huge piece to really highlight
- 12:56is that if they don't find it on your website
- 12:58they can just reach out to you
- 12:59that's huge so
- 13:00thank you for being so accessible and answering emails
- 13:03I mean I know that's a full time job in itself
- 13:05so that's a really big deal
- 13:08it is but as someone
- 13:10as a cancer dad who who had been there in
- 13:13in the hospital for many hours and many
- 13:15many nights many difficult nights
- 13:17I can tell you how important it is
- 13:19that someone can answer an email
- 13:20even if it's a a quick line saying
- 13:23there is a lot of people going through the same
- 13:25and together we can overcome this
- 13:29that's amazing
- 13:31so what is next on the horizon for Broken Not Broke
- 13:35so there's two things we wanna work on
- 13:38uh one
- 13:38is
- 13:39to continue building our financial literacy materials
- 13:42we have advice and and tips from eh
- 13:46both the organizations that we interview
- 13:48but also from families and and
- 13:51and others
- 13:52and we wanna put that together so people get
- 13:55a quick guide on you know
- 13:56what to expect when this financial shock comes
- 13:59and some advice about how to make sure that
- 14:03you know in this challenging times
- 14:05you can plan ahead save
- 14:08be conservative know about
- 14:10you know the deductions in taxes
- 14:12there is many complex issues to know about
- 14:14that could help to save money
- 14:16in this financial shock and especially
- 14:19not have the dire consequences on mobility
- 14:22in the long term
- 14:24and the second is we wanna go international
- 14:25you know our institute
- 14:27the Guarini Institute
- 14:28is also focused on international studies
- 14:32international education and we work with many
- 14:34many partners around the world
- 14:36from Mexico to Ireland to Israel
- 14:40and we wanna make sure that
- 14:42they have their own version of Broken Not Broke
- 14:45we're having a conversation with Australia
- 14:47where they have something similar
- 14:49that we are you know
- 14:50learning from each other how to work on that
- 14:53we have a a former student of mine
- 14:55who is now in Dominican Republic
- 14:57doing something similar and
- 14:59you know for us
- 15:00having the opportunity to help people around the world
- 15:03will be great
- 15:04who came up with your name
- 15:06did you come up with it
- 15:08uh The Broken Not Broke Interview
- 15:10and BrokenNotBroke.org
- 15:11yes I
- 15:12I did came with it
- 15:13it was uh
- 15:14basically my my
- 15:15my own experience saying like
- 15:17we are we
- 15:18we are heartbroken
- 15:20because that's what happens
- 15:21when you see your child go through this
- 15:24but we need to do everything we can
- 15:26to stop being financially broke
- 15:29I think that's an amazing name
- 15:30so kudos to you for coming up with it
- 15:33that's really very clever and very meaningful
- 15:36I love it
- 15:37thank you
- 15:39absolutely
- 15:40Adrian before we wrap up
- 15:41are there any other topics
- 15:43that we wanna talk a little bit more about
- 15:46well Megan
- 15:46I would say that it's important to
- 15:48to understand the concept of financial toxicity
- 15:52and this is a relatively new concept
- 15:54that was coined by researchers to define the
- 15:58the impact that cancer has on the finances of patients
- 16:04and their families
- 16:06I think it's well known
- 16:07that any chronic illness will bring
- 16:09a financial shock
- 16:11but toxicity is an interesting concept
- 16:14because just like it happens in
- 16:16in treatments for cancer
- 16:18the toxicity will have an immediate um
- 16:22eh impact in the symptoms of of
- 16:26of the patient but then it might linger
- 16:29it might take a long time to
- 16:30to have other sources of impacts
- 16:32and we hear cases all the time about the
- 16:35the toxicity of of chemotherapy and
- 16:38and radiation
- 16:40in finances in personal finances is the same
- 16:44you have the immediate shock
- 16:46but then down the road you might see other ones
- 16:49one example is life insurance
- 16:51you know you
- 16:52you hear all the time well
- 16:53what happen after you go through a treatment for cancer
- 16:58you might be very successful
- 17:00we have a lot more survivors today thanks to
- 17:02to great innovations but after a few years
- 17:07you might not be eligible for life insurance
- 17:10and we're talking about five years free of cancer
- 17:13will make sense
- 17:14because you have very similar chances that other people
- 17:18to um
- 17:19to to have a
- 17:20an illness or or die
- 17:22nevertheless
- 17:23it's a lot more difficult to find life insurance
- 17:26for many patients for any survivors
- 17:29the same happens with health insurance
- 17:31the premiums might go up eventually
- 17:34and then there is other costs
- 17:36that are not directly related
- 17:39but still impacting the family
- 17:41one that I keep telling people is going to college
- 17:45many families have to use any savings or college funds
- 17:49not only for the patient but for the whole um eh
- 17:53children for their siblings to pay for treatments for
- 17:57to pay for the immediate financial impact
- 17:59that means that down the road 5
- 18:0110 years from now you might not have the money
- 18:03to support your children's education
- 18:06all this uh
- 18:07is is
- 18:08is is problematic and
- 18:10and we are advocating for more people to know about it
- 18:13so we can ask for resources
- 18:14there's more scholarships
- 18:16not enough but more scholarships for survivors
- 18:19and
- 18:19this is the type of information that we need to share
- 18:22you know if you are in that situation
- 18:23if um
- 18:24your siblings in that situation
- 18:26let's look for those organizations that can help
- 18:28because
- 18:29the toxicity should not only be at the beginning
- 18:33it will be in the long term
- 18:35let's make sure we stop that
- 18:38wow and that is really like the ripple effect
- 18:41ramifications that you just don't think about initially
- 18:44but it it really does affect everything
- 18:47it's true because at the beginning
- 18:48you are surviving
- 18:50I call it surviving the day
- 18:52you know you are day by day trying to make sure um
- 18:55your child goes through these treatments
- 18:58and you try to give everything you can
- 19:00to make their lives easier
- 19:02or not as bad let me say
- 19:05especially when you are in in
- 19:06in the hospital
- 19:08but then you have to think in the
- 19:10down the road what's gonna happen a few years from now
- 19:12because obviously you want your child to survive
- 19:14and when you have a survivor
- 19:16it's the best feeling but
- 19:19you still have to think about
- 19:20what happened to the whole family
- 19:22and finances is is a key aspect of it
- 19:27absolutely
- 19:29tell us are
- 19:30do you have any like
- 19:32success stories that are extra meaningful
- 19:35has anybody sent you a letter that just
- 19:37really stuck with you
- 19:38that you would want to tell us about
- 19:41um one of the example that I found very interesting was
- 19:45um
- 19:46a person who contacted us
- 19:48you know via the
- 19:49our website and as I said
- 19:51you just can go to the contact form
- 19:52and we'll immediately respond
- 19:54and this was a a gentleman eh
- 19:58living in in New Jersey
- 20:01who you know
- 20:02was overwhelmed in and because of the of
- 20:06of cancer
- 20:07and didn't know exactly how to pay for the bills or eh
- 20:12what to do in that situation
- 20:14he knew uh
- 20:15he needed immediate treatment
- 20:16but he knew also the expenses that were coming
- 20:20and just felt overwhelmed
- 20:22and you know we
- 20:23we contacted back and say
- 20:25well first of all
- 20:27there is a a process here
- 20:30and there is organizations that can support you
- 20:33and there you can also talk to the hospital
- 20:34and make sure you understand the
- 20:36the cost that will be part of this treatment
- 20:40but number one the most important thing is
- 20:42do not stop treatments because of that
- 20:44you know
- 20:45because any delaying treatments in cancer might be uh
- 20:51the difference
- 20:52so we want people to know that
- 20:55regardless of how overwhelming is
- 20:57when you hear any of the costs related to treatments
- 21:01to prescriptions to adjustments in life
- 21:05you have to go ahead and and start the treatment
- 21:08there will be ways to find resources
- 21:11and that is a key issue
- 21:13that we felt it was important for this person to
- 21:17to know and he followed that
- 21:20he talked to his social worker and eventually sent a
- 21:23a very nice email saying that
- 21:27you know that
- 21:27that allow him to feel more empowered
- 21:30to go through this very difficult process
- 21:33I imagine a lot of people coming in
- 21:35don't even know social workers are a piece of this
- 21:38would you say so
- 21:40absolutely and I have to say
- 21:42uh
- 21:43my
- 21:43the respect I have for social workers after these years
- 21:47have increased exponentially
- 21:49they are such a key a variable in this equation
- 21:55I
- 21:56I feel they should be paid way more than they are paid
- 21:59recognized way more than they are recognized
- 22:02because they have to go to this very difficult cases
- 22:07and find the resources at the same time they they
- 22:11they bring all the elements uh
- 22:15there is bureaucracy involved
- 22:16there is paperwork involved
- 22:17there is applications involved
- 22:19there is the knowledge of how law keeps changing
- 22:23it is a very difficult task and
- 22:26and it unfortunately
- 22:28we don't have enough because that's part of the issue
- 22:31it's very similar to the problem we have
- 22:32with guidance counselors in high schools
- 22:34they they are
- 22:35they are key for for the future of
- 22:37of higher education but we just don't have enough
- 22:40and in a large high school um
- 22:42students don't get enough time just
- 22:44it's just impossible
- 22:45and the same happens with social workers
- 22:48I I try to communicate with them often
- 22:51I have a database that I send the
- 22:54the information we get the updates for the database
- 22:57or the interview to them
- 22:58and ask them to share it with their
- 23:01with their clients with their families
- 23:03and every time we I talk to them
- 23:05I feel that um
- 23:07they are the ones who are
- 23:09are are keeping this together
- 23:12absolutely and even the social workers
- 23:17I'm sure you're a huge resource for them
- 23:20to be able to come and look at your network and
- 23:22and I'm
- 23:23I would imagine that that helps their job a little bit
- 23:27too right
- 23:28that's what we're trying to do
- 23:29you know I I
- 23:30I thought when I designed this website
- 23:33I thought about you know
- 23:34two particular audiences
- 23:36one is that parent caregiver who is
- 23:40at 2:00am in the morning in a hospital bed uh
- 23:44or in a hospital chair going through these very
- 23:47very rough treatments and
- 23:49and at the same time thinking
- 23:50how are we gonna pay the the utility bill
- 23:53I wanted that website and we have a
- 23:56a very user friendly a version for smartphones
- 24:01I wanted them to
- 24:02to know that there is resources for them
- 24:04but the other audience was a social worker that
- 24:07as I mentioned might spend 70% of their time
- 24:09looking for financial assistance
- 24:11what they told me is that they
- 24:13they have all these very long directories
- 24:15or lists that they have compiled over over the years
- 24:19they share it with each other
- 24:21there is an association
- 24:22of pediatric oncology social workers
- 24:24where there's also more information
- 24:26but the reality is that
- 24:27when you have so many organizations in this ecosystem
- 24:31um you
- 24:33it's very difficult to update the information
- 24:35you know
- 24:35you might get links that are not working anymore
- 24:38you might get organizations
- 24:39that don't have the money to support anymore
- 24:41organizations that change their guidelines
- 24:44and you have to start from zero
- 24:46so my commitment when we created Broken Not Broke
- 24:49was to update the whole database once a year
- 24:52to make sure that that information is up to date
- 24:57that's amazing I love that you're so mindful of that
- 25:01because it is true and
- 25:02there's probably new organizations
- 25:04popping up constantly as well
- 25:06that is correct that happens a lot
- 25:09yeah wow
- 25:11I love this I love everything you're doing
- 25:13I think you're doing it all in an amazing way
- 25:15you're helping so many people
- 25:17the patients the social workers
- 25:19the organizations to be found
- 25:20you're really out there
- 25:21being a champion for all of them
- 25:23and I think it's amazing
- 25:25thank you Megan
- 25:26I must say that you know something
- 25:28that we were not considered at the beginning
- 25:29and turned out to be one of the uh
- 25:31outcomes of this product or uses of this product
- 25:35is a people who want to donate to these organizations
- 25:38because they can you know
- 25:40they can also
- 25:41filter the information through the website
- 25:43and find the organizations
- 25:44that they feel comfortable donating to
- 25:46you know you
- 25:47you hear the the
- 25:48the large organizations childhood cancer
- 25:50you know Saint Jude
- 25:51obviously or
- 25:52or Alex's Lemonade but there is very small organizations
- 25:56that focus on a particular county
- 25:59on a particular type of cancer
- 26:01on a particular type of financial assistance that you
- 26:05as a family who wants to to help um
- 26:07the cause
- 26:08can find through our website and also donate to them
- 26:13I love it it's all amazing
- 26:15and you're doing such wonderful work
