Latest / Recovering Out Loud / The 5 Lies Addiction Tells You — And Why They Sound So Reasonable
Transcript
- 0:00You know that voice in your head that is really loud and it tells
- 0:04you that it's OK to drink or it's going to be different this
- 0:08time? Or it sometimes feels like
- 0:10you're literally battling with another person.
- 0:13There's another voice that's talking and telling you that
- 0:16things are going to be different this time.
- 0:18And it happens before every single relapse.
- 0:20Today's episode, I'm going to talk about the five lies that
- 0:23addiction tells you. And I've found in the 10 years
- 0:26that I've been doing this in recovery and in the addiction
- 0:29field, working in the addiction field, that they're most more or
- 0:33less synonymous across the board.
- 0:34A lot of people have the a similar experience where it's
- 0:38almost like, and I do videos on this all the time of me versus
- 0:42my attic brain. My attic brain is a separate
- 0:44part of me. Sometimes it feels like that.
- 0:47And so I, I want to do this episode today because I want to
- 0:51bring light to the fact that one, this is not something that
- 0:54you have to be run by. It's something that can coexist
- 0:57in your life and you don't have to act on the decisions because
- 1:01that motherfucker in my head will tell me that it is a good
- 1:04idea to do it. It'll convince me seven ways
- 1:07till Sunday that this is the right thing to do.
- 1:09And it's going to be different this time.
- 1:11It's going to be better. You will get control of this.
- 1:14You can just have one and no one will know.
- 1:15I'm going to go and get into all of that.
- 1:17So I'm Anthony, I'm an alcoholic and an addict.
- 1:20I had 7 1/2 years of recovery and sobriety and I relapsed on
- 1:24ADHD medication and secrets and steroids.
- 1:28And This is why I'm so passionate about recovery
- 1:31because I want to keep continuing to carry the message
- 1:33to people so that you don't have to go through that because I
- 1:36don't wish that upon anybody. That was one of the worst
- 1:38experiences of my life. It always does get worse.
- 1:40And I'm here to tell you today that there is a solution.
- 1:42There is a way out of this thing.
- 1:44I have found it and many other people that I know have found
- 1:46it. So let's get into it.
- 1:47So 5 lies in order to the five lies that show up.
- 1:51Each one gets a story, what it actually sounds like in your
- 1:54head. And what I'm about to describe
- 1:57best describes what the field calls cognitive distortion.
- 2:00So the scientific clinical term behind it is cognitive
- 2:02distortion, thinking patterns documented in addiction
- 2:05research. Going back to Aaron Beck and
- 2:07Albert Ellis. I'm not going to quote the
- 2:09papers, but I'm going to tell you what it sounds like at 2:00
- 2:11AM or 3:00 PM or 3:00 AM, or when you're on the patio looking
- 2:16at that beautiful drink that looks so great and the illusory
- 2:21freedom that comes with drugs and alcohol.
- 2:24Lie one, I've got this under control.
- 2:27So the lie's favorite costume for this one is competence.
- 2:30You're functional, you're showing up, you're paying the
- 2:32bills. Therefore, the logic goes, I
- 2:34don't have a problem. I've got this under control.
- 2:36Everything's OK. Look at me.
- 2:38I still have my job. This.
- 2:39I go into this in detail in the Functional Alcoholics episode
- 2:43because this is what happens. We put on the stage character
- 2:45and tell the world that everything's OK and we're
- 2:47convincing ourselves that everything's OK.
- 2:49Meanwhile, our life is in chaos. So the specific feeling of this
- 2:52lie is relief. It lets you exhale.
- 2:54It lets you breathe for a second that you know, if I don't have a
- 2:58problem, then that means I don't have to do anything to fix the
- 3:00problem because there's no problem here.
- 3:01I'm good, guys. Thank you.
- 3:03It lets you off the hook. It lets you close the tab on a
- 3:06part of your brain that was starting to ask questions.
- 3:09I don't like that. I'm not going to ask questions.
- 3:11I don't want to get into this. I'm I'm fine.
- 3:14I've got this under control. Control is the great obsession
- 3:17of every alcoholic. It's the lie that keeps you
- 3:20drinking for an extra 510 or 15 years longer than you needed to.
- 3:25Control is on a spectrum. It's not a binary thing.
- 3:28The question isn't am I out of control?
- 3:30The question is how much of my life am I organizing around the
- 3:34substance, the drugs, the alcohol?
- 3:36If the answer is any, then the lies already working in your
- 3:39life. Here's what it actually sounds
- 3:40like. I can stop whenever I want, I
- 3:43just don't want to right now. Ever done ever said that before?
- 3:46Ever heard that? I can stop whenever I want.
- 3:48I just don't want to right now. So today, I don't trust my own
- 3:51assessment of control. I outsource it to my higher
- 3:54power, my mentors, my therapist, my partner, my friends.
- 3:59I tell three people that I trust.
- 4:01If three people tell me that I trust that something is off,
- 4:04they're right and I'm the one holding the lie.
- 4:06I need two people to see my problem.
- 4:08I can't see it. My perception is distorted.
- 4:11Lie number two, I've earned this.
- 4:13This one shows up after a hard week.
- 4:15It shows up after a chaotic month or a business deal.
- 4:19And it's, you know, I've earned this.
- 4:21I've worked hard. I deserve a drink, I deserve
- 4:24relief. I deserve to relax.
- 4:26A promotion, a funeral, something bad, something good.
- 4:28Any days that end in why I deserve this.
- 4:31So this life feels like fairness, like you're finally
- 4:34being reasonable with yourself. Yeah, This makes sense.
- 4:36I earned this. Yeah, you did, Anthony.
- 4:38And it's a lot of patting on the back, self stroking, if you
- 4:41will. It's dressed up as self-care.
- 4:44This is my self-care routine. I'm going to enjoy a drink.
- 4:46And then it never turns out to be 1 drink.
- 4:48So that's what makes this one lethal is the other.
- 4:50Lies feel like negotiation. This one feels like kindness.
- 4:53I'm being nice to myself. I, I deserve this addiction
- 4:56doesn't announce itself as the villain.
- 4:57It shows up as the friend who thinks you're working too hard.
- 5:00So it's not bad. I, I, my, my friends think I'm
- 5:04work. I don't.
- 5:05They think I've earned this. That voice in my head is just,
- 5:08you know, you, you. This is OK, buddy.
- 5:10Let yourself loose a little. Put your hair down.
- 5:12Take your bra off. So the trick here is actual
- 5:15self-care doesn't require you to betray your recovery.
- 5:18If the reward involves breaking your sobriety, it's not a
- 5:21reward, it's a setup. What I do instead, well, I
- 5:23develop self-care routines. If I like one of the movies by
- 5:26myself, I do that. If I like one of the sports
- 5:28events Jays game I do that line #3 This time is different.
- 5:33This is the lie that ends long term sobriety.
- 5:36Pure insanity. It's the lie that ended mine.
- 5:38I can this time will be different.
- 5:41ADHD medication is not like cocaine.
- 5:44It's not like other drugs. I haven't tried this yet so I
- 5:49I've got this one. It's OK.
- 5:51This one shows up after some time has passed as well.
- 5:53It can show up in the beginning as well, but it shows up when
- 5:56things are going well and I can control it.
- 5:59Now I've I'm cured, I've got this thing, it's this time will
- 6:02be different. It's pure insanity doing the
- 6:03same thing, expecting different results.
- 6:06I'm not going to end up in a trap house doing cocaine because
- 6:08I'm taking it as prescribed my medication.
- 6:11It's funny for a lot of people, this one usually turns up as
- 6:14I've I've earned a drink. This time will be different with
- 6:17a drink. But for me it was much more
- 6:19cunning, baffling and powerful in that I convinced myself I had
- 6:22ADHD and so this time will be different.
- 6:25Looked like I'm not going to go down the dark path back to
- 6:28cocaine because this will solve my problem.
- 6:31And what is my problem? My problem is dis ease.
- 6:34I am at dis ease. I am disturbed, I am
- 6:37uncomfortable. I'm not tapped into a power
- 6:39greater than myself. That is my problem and I try to
- 6:42solve it with outside things, including ADHD medication.
- 6:45And then when that doesn't work, I inevitably go back to my drug
- 6:48of choice, which is cocaine and other stimulants and alcohol.
- 6:52So the the tricky one about this is the lie trades on your
- 6:55growth. It actually uses actual progress
- 6:58that you've made as evidence that the rules no longer apply
- 7:01to you. That's the genius behind it is
- 7:03it can only work on it can only work on people that have been
- 7:07doing well or think they've been doing well.
- 7:09What nobody told me was that. And what I want to tell you is
- 7:12if you're listening at 3 1/2 ten years, the disease does not get
- 7:16weaker. It's progressive.
- 7:17It is you hear all the time it's doing push ups in the parking
- 7:19lot while I sit in the studio. It's true.
- 7:21My disease is getting stronger, however, my recovery is also
- 7:24getting stronger if I continue to work on it.
- 7:27The thing is, it gets quieter over time.
- 7:29And so you're not outgrowing it, you're out working it one day at
- 7:32a time. Essentially.
- 7:34Those are two different things. You don't outgrow addiction, you
- 7:37out work it. The long timer's paradox is the
- 7:39longer you're sober, the more convincing the lie becomes and
- 7:42the less anyone around you is watching for it because you're
- 7:46so good at hiding it now you're good at discerning and building
- 7:49the stage character. And I don't really have a
- 7:50problem and I'm not going to tell anyone about this because I
- 7:52don't want them to think that I'm going to relapse and that
- 7:54I'm weak and that I'm not good at recovery and I'm I'm
- 7:57faltering and I have flaws. I don't want anyone to know
- 8:00that. So what do I do now?
- 8:02I simply tell myself whenever these thoughts come up.
- 8:04And it's been a while, actually it's been a couple weeks since
- 8:06I've had this idea of a fantasy of the fun times.
- 8:11But for me it's I simply have lost my right to chemical Peace
- 8:15of Mind. All mood or mind altering
- 8:17substances. I cannot use one.
- 8:19And maybe I had to go through that relapse to prove that I
- 8:22couldn't just use one. But essentially I just can't
- 8:25have one of anything. And that brings me peace today.
- 8:28It's not always easy, but I have to pray about it.
- 8:30I have to remind myself. I have to tell people when these
- 8:31thoughts start to obsess in my mind and play on thought loops.
- 8:36You can get through it, you just have to open up and get it out
- 8:38of your head. Lie #4 nobody will know.
- 8:43This is a good one when you're on vacation.
- 8:45So hotel rooms, business trips, weekends with your partner,
- 8:48weekends your partner's away. Sorry, you have the house to
- 8:51yourself. The lie lives in a closed door.
- 8:54So when I'm all alone now, nobody's going to know.
- 8:56I'll just have one. No one's going to know.
- 8:58I can get back into recovery on Monday.
- 9:00The specific fantasy this one sells is 1 clean, contained
- 9:04secret use. No witnesses, no consequences.
- 9:07Back to normal Monday morning. I can get through this and no
- 9:10one will know. Well, let me tell you, you're
- 9:12going to know. And you.
- 9:14In my experience, I'm not able to live with that secret.
- 9:17Eventually it blows up in my face and I'm using math again.
- 9:20This feeling is conspiracy. Conspirational.
- 9:24Conspirational. Is that a word?
- 9:26Conspirational. It's you against the world.
- 9:28A private little deal you're making with yourself.
- 9:30What's actually happening in the moment is that your addiction is
- 9:33asking to be taken off the accountability grid to get away
- 9:36with this one, and that's the only thing it wants.
- 9:38Your addiction wants you dead. Let's be honest.
- 9:40So like I said, you will know. The part the lie skips over is
- 9:45you will know you have to go to sleep with yourself, and
- 9:47wherever you go in the world, you're taking yourself with you.
- 9:50It means your recovery will know.
- 9:51The recovery version of yourself will know, which means the next
- 9:54morning you're either lying to everyone who matters to you, or
- 9:56you're starting over, or you're lying to yourself.
- 9:58Sobriety isn't something other people hold for you.
- 10:01It's the relationship you have with yourself when nobody's
- 10:04looking right goes back to that integrity.
- 10:07What am I doing when no one's watching?
- 10:08How am I living? What do I do now?
- 10:10There's no secrets in my recovery today.
- 10:12I work hard at that. I work hard at taking my
- 10:15inventory every night and analyzing.
- 10:16Is there something that I should be telling somebody about?
- 10:19Is there something that I'm hiding?
- 10:20There's something that I'm not proud of, something that is
- 10:23embarrassing me, that is eating me up, that is renting space in
- 10:26my head. If I'm in a hotel room or work
- 10:28trip, I think about it. I text somebody before.
- 10:31So get an accountability partner.
- 10:32This is something that I do. I tell my mentor.
- 10:35I tell my friends in recovery, my partner.
- 10:37The thought isn't the problem. Keeping the thought private is
- 10:41the problem #5 it's too late to come back.
- 10:45This is a good one. This life shows up after a slip,
- 10:49after a relapse, after a week, a month, a year of using again.
- 10:53I fucking certainly had this one.
- 10:55It's a lie that's turns a slip into a Bender.
- 10:58It's too late to come back. It's too hard to come back.
- 11:01I always say this, but when I relapsed it was like recovery
- 11:03was this mountain uphill in the snow, raining with booby traps.
- 11:07It was so hard for me to fathom coming back into this program in
- 11:12this life because I was too far gone in my brain.
- 11:15It's a lie. Everyone has a moment when they
- 11:18slip that they can either decide to jump back on the spiritual
- 11:20beam and get back into recovery or continue going on and hoping
- 11:24that they'll control it. Or what's the use anyways?
- 11:26This isn't this doesn't matter. I fucked up already.
- 11:29I might as well keep going. I've already tried stimulants
- 11:31that I never said I was going to try meth.
- 11:33Now I'm going to get into benzos because what's the point
- 11:35anyways? I'm already this far.
- 11:36It's too far gone. It feels like logic, like math,
- 11:40like the Ledger is closed and you've been assigned your final
- 11:43column. This is it.
- 11:44It's done too late. The door is closed.
- 11:47It's completely wrong. The easiest of the five to
- 11:50disprove, because everyone in the rooms has come back from
- 11:52something. Everyone in recovery has come
- 11:54back from worse than you did. I can guarantee it.
- 11:56I see it all the time. I'm an example of it.
- 11:58I came back from a relapse that I never thought I was going to
- 12:00come back from. There is no expiry date on
- 12:03recovery. There's no score You can't come
- 12:05back from, The meeting you're afraid to walk back into is full
- 12:08of people. The recovery community you
- 12:10you're going back into is full of people that have had it worse
- 12:13than you, or have come back from harder or come back from near
- 12:17death experiences. You just have to show up.
- 12:20January 12th, 2025. That's my date now.
- 12:23Not my first date, my current one.
- 12:24And honestly the shame of coming back after 7 1/2 years was one
- 12:28of the hardest things I've ever done, if not the hardest thing
- 12:30I've ever done in my life. But I'm so happy I did.
- 12:32I'm so glad that I didn't die. I'm grateful for the people that
- 12:35have come before me that have lifted me up to where I am now.
- 12:38You can be that person too. You can also avoid avoid all of
- 12:41this by noticing this lie and all these lies before it becomes
- 12:45too late to stop your relapse. And again, relapse isn't
- 12:49failure. It's a learning curve.
- 12:51It's a part of the process. It's a hint that your plan is
- 12:54off your, your plan is needs to be corrected, needs to be fixed
- 13:00and course corrected. That's it, it's a course
- 13:04correction. Something wasn't working and so
- 13:06I'm going to try something else. This time I'm going to ask for
- 13:09help and do it differently because it didn't work the first
- 13:12time. This led me to relapse so I'm
- 13:14going to try something else. I'm going to be open minded and
- 13:16willing. So quick recap, 5 lies.
- 13:19I've got this under control. I've earned this.
- 13:22This time will be different. Nobody will know and it's too
- 13:25late to come back. If you hear yourself saying one
- 13:28of those things, tell somebody about it.
- 13:29Write it down, get it out, be honest.
- 13:31It might save your life, it might save a relapse.
- 13:33You never know. You don't need to live in your
- 13:35head by yourself. There's people that are willing
- 13:37to help you. Every one of these lies sounds
- 13:39reasonable in the moment. We're good at convincing
- 13:42ourselves that it's true. We can paint the reality and
- 13:45project the reality onto anything.
- 13:47I can convince myself of anything.
- 13:48I always say that coming up with these ideas, not telling
- 13:51anybody, these plans and these great designs for fixing me,
- 13:54anytime I start to think on that, that plane of, of, of, of
- 13:58thought, I'm in a world of trouble.
- 14:00It's like me sitting in a room full of me, Me's talking to me
- 14:05and saying, hey, I got this idea.
- 14:07And all of the me's saying, yeah, it's a great idea, you
- 14:10should do it. Go do do it.
- 14:11It's a great idea. Tell somebody about it.
- 14:13Get it out of your head. It loses all of its power when
- 14:16you talk about it. If one of these landed harder
- 14:19than the others, that's the one I'd sit with this week.
- 14:22Not to fight it, just to notice when it shows up.
- 14:24Naming the lie is most of the work identifying it.
- 14:27Please, if you like this episode, follow, subscribe to
- 14:31the podcast, send it to a friend.
- 14:32I appreciate every single one of you.
- 14:34Thank you for being here today. If no one's told you this yet, I
- 14:37love you. And recovery is simple, not
- 14:39easy.
