- 1:34Speaker 1: saw all these articles in the newspaper. Well I didn't
- 1:36Speaker 1: read the newspaper, but my publicis send me a roundup
- 1:39Speaker 1: of like stuff, and apparently it's all over the news
- 1:41Speaker 1: that I bought my toxic house from RFK Junior. Because
- 1:43Speaker 1: I must have said it. I think I said it
- 1:45Speaker 1: on this podcast, yeah several times.
- 1:47Speaker 3: But you know what, we need the witches to know
- 1:49Speaker 3: that it's not his house anymore, because I think they
- 1:51Speaker 3: still keep cursing it over and over and over again.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Okay, so Etsy witches.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like you can hire a witch on Etsy
- 1:57Speaker 3: to like, you know, get with your guy.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going over to Kimmel so I'm going to
- 2:01Speaker 1: make an announcement there about my house and be like,

- 2:32Speaker 1: in Denver, which is this Friday. Anyway, we have a
- 2:35Speaker 1: very cutie patuity Canadian guest today. She's from you know,
- 2:39Speaker 1: or from Scrubs and Roseanne and Rick and Morty and Moore.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Please welcome actress Sarah Chalk. Oh there she is. Look
- 2:46Speaker 1: at that beautiful face.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Oh oh my god? Technology is it working? Can you
- 2:50Speaker 2: guys hear me?
- 2:51Speaker 1: We is? We is working? We'd be working, and shit,
- 2:54Speaker 1: we be gemmin I talk like this. Now that I'm
- 2:56Speaker 1: back from Jamaica, I have so many different access to
- 3:00Speaker 1: pull from.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I want you're all about to make up. I can't
- 3:03Speaker 2: believe the headphones, the microla, the zoo link. It's all working.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It's all coming all technology.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And babe, I'm allergic totech. We're at the same age,
- 3:12Speaker 1: we're both allergic to technology. I want to die before
- 3:15Speaker 1: AI comes out. I just want to euthanize. I want
- 3:17Speaker 1: a group euthanized. Do you want to do it with me?
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'm in We'll do it in Whistler, which is I
- 3:22Speaker 2: can see. It's where you are. It's my favorite place
- 3:24Speaker 2: in the whole world.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Before you say another word, please, I'm going to interrupt
- 3:28Speaker 1: you because I just learned this morning that you have
- 3:30Speaker 1: a house in Whistler. How is that? How is it
- 3:32Speaker 1: possible that I didn't know that?
- 3:35Speaker 2: How are we not skiing together?
- 3:36Speaker 1: All right? Well, how are we not skaing together?
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's already love it first sight. I want to ski
- 3:41Speaker 2: with you. I grew up. I learned to ski in Whistler,
- 3:45Speaker 2: like forty five years ago.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's what I dreamed. That's where I
- 3:50Speaker 1: dreamed to have grown up. All my friends that grow
- 3:52Speaker 1: up here learned how to ski here about forty five
- 3:55Speaker 1: years ago, so you probably know some of them.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I probably do. It's crazy we uh yeah, I grew
- 4:00Speaker 2: up in Vancouver and so we would go up to
- 4:03Speaker 2: Whistler on the weekends. Yeah, it's my favorite place.
- 4:06Speaker 1: It's my favorite place too. I love especially right now,
- 4:09Speaker 1: we're having a winter wonderland moment. We're about to get
- 4:11Speaker 1: fifty centimeters tonight.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I heard. I can't believe it. I'm actually in la
- 4:17Speaker 2: and I'm in a hotel as you can see, and I
- 4:20Speaker 2: have like and obviously this season has not been ideal
- 4:23Speaker 2: yet and so finally the snow is coming. I'm so jealous.
- 4:26Speaker 2: So are you gonna go, like straight after this podcasting.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I'm literally out there. I'm wearing all of my bottoms
- 4:33Speaker 1: that you can't see. My heated socks are on, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: have my ski pants on, and I am gonna Yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 1: We're gonna run out the door and ski. I have
- 4:41Speaker 1: a couple of friends that are visiting, so it's I
- 4:43Speaker 1: haven't been here for a few weeks. So I came
- 4:45Speaker 1: back and I'm like, oh good, there's lazy snow because
- 4:48Speaker 1: you as you know, we have all this rain problem
- 4:50Speaker 1: now where it rains to the top of the Mountain
- 4:51Speaker 1: and then ruins all the fucking snow. But I just
- 4:54Speaker 1: want to talk about first of all, aren't you so
- 4:56Speaker 1: grateful to be a Canadian?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I am. I am. I mean I'm actually
- 5:01Speaker 2: dual now because I lived in La seventeen years, so
- 5:05Speaker 2: I got my American citizenship when I was here.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Well, you might want to revert that right back to
- 5:08Speaker 1: Canada's sister. I might just want to My friends were out.
- 5:11Speaker 1: We went over to my friend Andre's house for dinner
- 5:13Speaker 1: last night, and so there was a bunch of Canadians
- 5:15Speaker 1: and my American friends. We left and they go, my god,
- 5:19Speaker 1: these Canadians are just so nice. It's so weird. And
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm like, I know, and they're like and their children
- 5:27Speaker 1: are so lovely and engaged and sit at dinners and
- 5:31Speaker 1: talk to the adults. I'm like, I know. And they're like,
- 5:34Speaker 1: this makes us feel like shit about our own kids.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And I'm like, I know, I understand. Every year I
- 5:41Speaker 1: come to Canada and I'm around my friend's kids and
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, these kids could give all my friends
- 5:47Speaker 1: in LA's kids a real run for their fucking money.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It's because we just say the Americans are coming. This
- 5:52Speaker 2: is what you have to do. Just pretend to listen,
- 5:55Speaker 2: pretend to be polite. We got to live up to this.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Just apologize a lot. Yeah, yeah, there's a good listener.
- 6:01Speaker 1: There's just a level. It's a very civilized society, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: I really appreciate that, especially as an American and especially
- 6:08Speaker 1: in present day everything that's happening. I really appreciate the civility.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And my friend goes sometimes, she goes, do you ever
- 6:14Speaker 1: get bored by how nice everyone is? And I was like,
- 6:17Speaker 1: that's a very interesting question. Do I get bored with
- 6:21Speaker 1: people being.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Because we're also not just like Canadians are fucking funny.
- 6:26Speaker 2: The Canadians have a good time.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's yeah. All the good stuff is in Canada,
- 6:31Speaker 1: believe me. That's why. That's another component of my ability
- 6:33Speaker 1: to stay here. So you're you're combining two things, people
- 6:36Speaker 1: who like to party and people who are nice. So
- 6:38Speaker 1: it's a jackpot situation.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And there's like often snow, Yeah, there's often snow.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I just saw a picture of you. Here's something that
- 6:45Speaker 1: I'm not looking forward to ever happening in my life,
- 6:47Speaker 1: So let's focus it about it happening in yours. I
- 6:50Speaker 1: saw a picture of you and your new Newish lover.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You've had a boyfriend for about a year, right.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yes, Yeah, I met someone fantastic, which was so fun
- 6:59Speaker 2: and so expected.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I love that. I love what everyone every woman always
- 7:04Speaker 1: says whenever we meet someone, we're like, it was so
- 7:06Speaker 1: unexpected because we're so not expecting to ever meet anyone
- 7:11Speaker 1: that we would fall in love with totally.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And I had I kind of just started to try,
- 7:17Speaker 2: like I and I was like, I think I'm ready
- 7:18Speaker 2: to meet someone. I said to my friends, like set
- 7:20Speaker 2: me up with someone. And I would just be on
- 7:24Speaker 2: dates and be like is this I had no frame
- 7:25Speaker 2: of reference. I'd been twenty years. I'm like, is this
- 7:27Speaker 2: what it's supposed to feel?
- 7:30Speaker 4: Like?
- 7:30Speaker 2: This can't be right. And then I met my boyfriend
- 7:32Speaker 2: and I was like, oh, oh, this is what its
- 7:34Speaker 2: supposed to feel like.
- 7:36Speaker 1: How did you guys meet? Do you mind my asking?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I got set up by my two best
- 7:43Speaker 2: friends they're both named Jen and my gen's were like,
- 7:46Speaker 2: you're doing a terrible job of this, so we're going
- 7:48Speaker 2: to take this into our hands now. Like they were like,
- 7:51Speaker 2: you just have to try, like energetically, you got to
- 7:53Speaker 2: put yourself out there just go on the apps, and
- 7:55Speaker 2: I was like, I don't want to go on the apps.
- 7:56Speaker 2: That's way too terrifying, And so I had a small
- 8:00Speaker 2: didn't trying on apps, didn't go on one day from them,
- 8:02Speaker 2: but just like I'm not, as you can see, super
- 8:04Speaker 2: technologically inclined, so I would get on the app and
- 8:07Speaker 2: Bumble has this feature that is like a privacy one
- 8:11Speaker 2: where nobody sees that you're on the app unless you
- 8:13Speaker 2: swipe on them. So I was like, okay, that feels
- 8:15Speaker 2: kind of like a nice, gentle, easy way to start.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'll just do that. And when you buy that feature,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you get a couple of other features, one of which
- 8:23Speaker 2: is called a super swipe.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Have you heard of the superstich in deduce what that
- 8:27Speaker 1: might mean? But why don't you spell it out for us?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Well, I don't even know, Like I guess if when
- 8:32Speaker 2: a swipe just won't suffice and you're just like, I
- 8:34Speaker 2: got a super swipe on this person, right. Unfortunately, a
- 8:38Speaker 2: super swipe you don't actually have to swipe, just where
- 8:40Speaker 2: your thumb naturally rests on the bottom corner of the phone.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You just hit it by accident, and it's like you've
- 8:47Speaker 2: just super swiped on John, and you're like, what did
- 8:49Speaker 2: I just do? And so then you've told this random
- 8:53Speaker 2: stranger that like a swipe just wasn't enough and you
- 8:56Speaker 2: wanted to super swipe. And so I'm like, this is
- 8:58Speaker 2: my first time logging on. I'm googling like how do
- 9:01Speaker 2: you get rid of the super swipe? And you can't?
- 9:04Speaker 2: And I find this like long spread on Reddit that
- 9:06Speaker 2: was like the only way to get rid of a
- 9:08Speaker 2: super swipe is just like delete the whole account. So
- 9:11Speaker 2: then I just deleted the whole thing. And I was like,
- 9:13Speaker 2: I'm not meant to do this, and so the geens
- 9:16Speaker 2: were like, Okay, we're gonna take this into our hands,
- 9:18Speaker 2: and so they called someone they know on the East
- 9:20Speaker 2: coast and they were like, do you know anyone on
- 9:22Speaker 2: the West coast who is our age? Who wants to
- 9:25Speaker 2: date someone who is our age and who's great? And
- 9:29Speaker 2: then we met and I had kind of like thought
- 9:31Speaker 2: about it, and I was like, I know that you
- 9:33Speaker 2: can't ask for everything, so what would be like? I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 2: turns out you can. I feel like this person actually
- 9:40Speaker 2: does have everything, but I didn't know that. So I
- 9:43Speaker 2: was like, I feel like the thing that's like the
- 9:46Speaker 2: most important to me, is I want someone adventuress. I
- 9:48Speaker 2: want someone who's up for it and wants to do
- 9:50Speaker 2: shit with me and wants to like have adventures. And
- 9:54Speaker 2: I like way overshot that manifest because he is so
- 9:57Speaker 2: much more adventurous than I. Like, we'll go to do something.
- 10:01Speaker 2: He's like, okay, so we'll also bring like the avalanche
- 10:04Speaker 2: beacons on, like totally totally. It's like my comfort zones
- 10:08Speaker 2: here and I'm like, right right, right, right right, which
- 10:12Speaker 2: is great. I mean that's how it should be.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, And that's so fun though, Like that is
- 10:17Speaker 1: such I mean, that's a total necessary thing for me too.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Like I'm all about adventure and it can be any story.
- 10:22Speaker 1: It doesn't even have to be outdoorsy. It just has
- 10:24Speaker 1: to be adventure us in spirit, you know what I mean.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I love to travel. I want somebody who wants to
- 10:29Speaker 1: bounce around the world. I want somebody who can afford
- 10:31Speaker 1: to bounce around the world. So I'm not bouncing them
- 10:33Speaker 1: around the world, you know what I mean. I want
- 10:36Speaker 1: someone who's got their shit together enough to be able
- 10:39Speaker 1: to be like meet the moment. So it is like
- 10:41Speaker 1: it's it's amazing that you think you can't ask for everything,
- 10:44Speaker 1: but why can't you? We can always ask for everything.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It doesn't mean you're gonna get everything, but it sounds
- 10:49Speaker 1: like you've gotten a lot and more than you ask
- 10:52Speaker 1: for except for this fishing. Why do you like fishing?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Okay? I actually so, my son got me into fishing.
- 11:00Speaker 2: I mean, do I like fishing?
- 11:03Speaker 1: There's the answer right there. I mean, I think you
- 11:05Speaker 1: gave us the answer.
- 11:07Speaker 2: The answer, And there's a lot of like I get
- 11:10Speaker 2: really motion sickness in I give ocean sick in boats.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And so if it's like fishing, you're not moving in
- 11:15Speaker 2: the boat, you're just sitting. So then you're riding the
- 11:18Speaker 2: waves and like a calm it's much worse. If it's
- 11:22Speaker 2: a calm day, I'm okay, but otherwise it's hard. I like,
- 11:27Speaker 2: I like the excitement of the moment where you catch
- 11:29Speaker 2: a fish. That's like very exciting, but obviously there's hours
- 11:32Speaker 2: where you're often not catching. But I like the snacks,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I like the hanging out. There's like all these fishing
- 11:38Speaker 2: rituals and superstitions, Like you know, if there's a certain
- 11:42Speaker 2: song playing when you catch, then you have to keep
- 11:46Speaker 2: playing that song. So I've been in a boat with
- 11:48Speaker 2: my son where we have to play can I Kick
- 11:49Speaker 2: It by Tribe call Quest for four hours straight? Because
- 11:52Speaker 2: that's you know, the last song that there was a
- 11:55Speaker 2: fish cut. It's meditative. There's definitely meditative aspect to it.
- 11:59Speaker 2: There's like I feel like it teaches patience and.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, a little too much patience for my I need
- 12:08Speaker 1: more patience. But that's like beyond my I can't even
- 12:11Speaker 1: with fish. I just can't.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I mean I do want to. I don't want to
- 12:14Speaker 2: oversell myself as a fish like old fish often, like
- 12:17Speaker 2: I probably go fishing once a year.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Well, what's so funny is that the picture that I
- 12:21Speaker 1: was looking at when I was like looking at our
- 12:22Speaker 1: notes for you, I was looking at this picture of
- 12:24Speaker 1: this guy you standing there with a fish, and I'm like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: that's so funny because if you took your head out
- 12:28Speaker 1: of there, this would be a guy's dating app picture.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Like you know when you go on these half of
- 12:33Speaker 1: them are holding fucking giant bass and you're like, wait,
- 12:35Speaker 1: what are you trying to attract like another fisher woman,
- 12:38Speaker 1: because good luck with that. There's not many of us
- 12:40Speaker 1: out there. It's like, unless you're in the Arctic Circle,
- 12:44Speaker 1: maybe I don't know who's into that.
- 12:46Speaker 2: You know, there's always a fish or there's obviously a
- 12:51Speaker 2: puppy who's usually not theirs with the dog, there's a
- 12:55Speaker 2: borrowed puppy from a neighbor.
- 12:57Speaker 3: It's like the picture with their ex cropped out, like
- 13:00Speaker 3: you can see just like a shoulder.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I know, I love that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: That is so funny, and maybe they're going like this,
- 13:05Speaker 2: like I've seen pictures.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I've seen pictures of myself on people's dating sites, like
- 13:11Speaker 1: I like random people that I don't know that have
- 13:14Speaker 1: had a picture with me. I've seen once, like a
- 13:16Speaker 1: mar Greade photo like something like that where somebody asked
- 13:19Speaker 1: me for and then they put it on their dating probom.
- 13:21Speaker 2: We're definitely not clicking on them anyway.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Sarah. Let's talk about what you're here promoting, because your
- 13:29Speaker 1: guys are doing a reboot of Scrubs. Tell us about it.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been so fun, it feels so lucky and
- 13:37Speaker 2: so crazy. I mean, it was my favorite job and
- 13:39Speaker 2: we did it twenty five years ago, and.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I got twenty five years ago.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty five years ago, got.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It and really just remake anything at any time. That's amazing.
- 13:47Speaker 2: You can't like, and we always thought like that would
- 13:50Speaker 2: be really fun. Over the last decade, we've talked about
- 13:53Speaker 2: it a bit, but I don't think any of us
- 13:54Speaker 2: thought that it was going to come back and we
- 13:55Speaker 2: were going to do it in this way as a
- 13:57Speaker 2: show again on primetime on ABC talked about like, oh,
- 14:00Speaker 2: if everybody's schedules collide, it'll be like kind of like
- 14:03Speaker 2: psych did they did like a movie, And so when
- 14:06Speaker 2: we started talking about doing it like this, it was
- 14:09Speaker 2: so fun. Obviously, the hospital we shot in was this
- 14:11Speaker 2: like old abandoned hospital in the valley's been torn down,
- 14:15Speaker 2: and so they rebuilt the sets and we thought like, oh,
- 14:18Speaker 2: they'll build it like it'll look kind of like the
- 14:20Speaker 2: old ones. They built it exactly the same. So it
- 14:23Speaker 2: was such a trip, Like I spent my twenties in
- 14:26Speaker 2: that ICU and that cafeteria, and the first day like
- 14:28Speaker 2: stepping back on to these sets that were built so
- 14:32Speaker 2: beautifully and exactly the same, it was like it was
- 14:34Speaker 2: just such a trip. I felt like a step back
- 14:38Speaker 2: in time, Like the same people and the same character
- 14:40Speaker 2: in the same right and in the same sets.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a total retu narse, Like how fun
- 14:46Speaker 1: to get everyone back together again.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been so fun and we all like we
- 14:50Speaker 2: all loved each other and we still hung out and
- 14:52Speaker 2: went on ski trips and went for dinners and since
- 14:54Speaker 2: the show ended, and so you know, to kind of
- 14:58Speaker 2: go back to that dynamic on a set like we
- 15:02Speaker 2: I think you can, like you can hope when you
- 15:04Speaker 2: start on a new job that you'll all have chemistry,
- 15:06Speaker 2: but I think you can't manufacture is history. And we
- 15:09Speaker 2: actually have twenty five years all together. And then they
- 15:12Speaker 2: brought in five new kids. They're not I mean, they're
- 15:15Speaker 2: not kids. We call them Donald Zach and I call
- 15:17Speaker 2: them our kids, not children, but we call them our kids.
- 15:19Speaker 2: There are there are kids there are you know, between
- 15:21Speaker 2: twenty five and thirty five years old, and they're like
- 15:24Speaker 2: so fucking funny and such good people. And so that's
- 15:27Speaker 2: been like a whole new addition to the dynamic. And
- 15:31Speaker 2: we had we shot up in Vancouver, which was so
- 15:34Speaker 2: insanely lucky, and we had Saturday night dinners every week
- 15:38Speaker 2: with the whole cast and it was super great. I mean,
- 15:41Speaker 2: to do a comedy, there's nothing like it being on
- 15:44Speaker 2: a comedy set. Like I love doing all the different things.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But there's something so specifically great about being on a
- 15:50Speaker 2: comedy set that's just like not replicable.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Well, that's how you started out on Roseanne, right, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: that was your first big show and that was how
- 15:57Speaker 1: many years of your life?
- 15:59Speaker 2: That was four? So I joined in season six?
- 16:02Speaker 1: Oh right, right right? You kind of replaced the other sister, right, Okay.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Becky she went away to college, so I replaced her.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So when I joined, I was I was sixteen years
- 16:10Speaker 2: old when I auditioned, and she had left to go
- 16:12Speaker 2: to college. And so I got this audition. I like
- 16:15Speaker 2: put myself on tape and like put a VHS tape
- 16:18Speaker 2: in the mail and it was for this like new
- 16:21Speaker 2: series filming in nineteen ninety four, and they didn't want
- 16:24Speaker 2: to say what it was. And then you know, you
- 16:26Speaker 2: get a call back and then another callback, and finally
- 16:28Speaker 2: they said what it was for, and they're like, we're
- 16:29Speaker 2: going to fly you down. And the whole audition was
- 16:31Speaker 2: making out with Glenn Quinn, who played Mark, who was
- 16:34Speaker 2: irish and gorgeous in eight years older than me, And
- 16:37Speaker 2: I was like, how am I going to remember anything
- 16:39Speaker 2: that I'm supposed to talk about?
- 16:41Speaker 1: Sixteen year old?
- 16:42Speaker 2: You were doing sixteen.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I was taking out with him for hours.
- 16:45Speaker 2: The whole the whole it was. The audition was like
- 16:47Speaker 2: probably twenty minutes. And because we did it a few times,
- 16:50Speaker 2: they had it on the set. They wanted to put
- 16:52Speaker 2: in all the factors to see if you could keep
- 16:55Speaker 2: your focus. So they had four cameras and they were
- 16:57Speaker 2: calling out camera numbers. They had a laugh track. They
- 17:00Speaker 2: had like someone directing it, Gail Mancuso, who's now one
- 17:03Speaker 2: of our main scrubs directors.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Oh, she's the best. I've worked with her before. She's
- 17:08Speaker 1: so she's a legend.
- 17:09Speaker 2: She's legend, so cool, she's a legend. She and she
- 17:11Speaker 2: directed you know, a ton of our og scrubs and
- 17:14Speaker 2: came back this last season to direct more scrubs. And
- 17:16Speaker 2: she's the one that gave me my first job, you know,
- 17:19Speaker 2: one hundred years ago. So I'm doing the scene with
- 17:22Speaker 2: Glenn and the whole scene is like baby, baby Camure,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and I'm like, get a job at the gas station.
- 17:26Speaker 2: She's like baby Camure. I'm like, get a job at
- 17:27Speaker 2: the gas station. And we're just making out. And that's
- 17:29Speaker 2: like the audition, and then they were like we'll tell
- 17:32Speaker 2: you in seven days. And then the night before they
- 17:34Speaker 2: were going to tell us, they said, okay, it's down
- 17:35Speaker 2: to four of you. Now come back an audition with Roseanne,
- 17:38Speaker 2: and so I did. And the audition was like on
- 17:40Speaker 2: the couch and then you have to make.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Rone You're like, all right, this is very much.
- 17:44Speaker 2: This takes a turn. This. I was not signing up
- 17:48Speaker 2: for this books Google. And she was like how old
- 17:51Speaker 2: are you? And I was like, I'm sixteen and all
- 17:53Speaker 2: the other girls were twenty one and she was like, no,
- 17:56Speaker 2: how old are you really? And I was like the
- 17:58Speaker 2: idea of lying about my age would never have occurred
- 18:01Speaker 2: to me. I was like, I'm sixteen. And they were
- 18:03Speaker 2: worried that, you know, because Sarah and Licy had both
- 18:05Speaker 2: left to go to college, that I would also since
- 18:08Speaker 2: I was the youngest girl auditioning, that I would do that.
- 18:10Speaker 2: So Tom Arnold called me at my house after the
- 18:12Speaker 2: audition and he's like, so college, Like what do you
- 18:14Speaker 2: think about? What do you think about college? And I
- 18:16Speaker 2: was like no, no college, no, thank you, gross, none
- 18:18Speaker 2: for me. And even though I knew I would go eventually,
- 18:20Speaker 2: I wasn't going to do it then. I could do
- 18:22Speaker 2: it later. And so I found out that I had
- 18:25Speaker 2: the job, and then the craziest thing happened. I went
- 18:30Speaker 2: to a party that night and I told a couple
- 18:33Speaker 2: people it sounded like the weirdest lie because it's a
- 18:37Speaker 2: time when it was like nine shows on television, and
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know, it was the number one show at the time,
- 18:42Speaker 2: and it was like saying, I'm going to go be
- 18:44Speaker 2: on that show and play that person. I mean, it
- 18:46Speaker 2: made no sense. And then it spread around our high school.
- 18:49Speaker 2: And then on Monday morning, I get a call from
- 18:53Speaker 2: the Roseanne Show and they're like, we're having cold feet
- 18:55Speaker 2: about doing this. We don't know if we're going to
- 18:57Speaker 2: do it. If we do it, it'll be you, but
- 18:58Speaker 2: we're going to put you on hold for for months.
- 19:01Speaker 2: And I thought, oh my god, my ass is grass
- 19:04Speaker 2: at high school. If this doesn't happen, I'm forever going
- 19:07Speaker 2: to be like the weirdo who lied about going to
- 19:09Speaker 2: be Becky on the Rosan Show.
- 19:11Speaker 1: That is so funny. I actually did that for real.
- 19:13Speaker 1: When I was in elementary school, I lied to my
- 19:15Speaker 1: whole class in order to gain some more respect from
- 19:18Speaker 1: my peers because I didn't feel like they respected me enough,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and I told them that I was going to be
- 19:22Speaker 1: in this sequel to Private Benjamin, playing Goldie Han's daughter
- 19:25Speaker 1: as her daughter. I wrote about this in my very
- 19:28Speaker 1: first book, and I was like telling people. I was like, oh, yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I had a screen test with Goldie Han. We have
- 19:32Speaker 1: so much chemistry. I was like, you guys better start
- 19:34Speaker 1: respecting me now because I'm going to be famous and
- 19:35Speaker 1: then you're gonna regret that you weren't nice to me.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And it went all around school and everyone's coming up
- 19:40Speaker 1: to me asking me all sorts of questions, and then like, obviously,
- 19:43Speaker 1: nothing ever happened. So I just had to keep like postponing,
- 19:46Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, it's going to be a summer shoot.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I had all the lingo down, and then finally I
- 19:50Speaker 1: was like, oh, they decided to go in a different direction. Meanwhile,
- 19:53Speaker 1: there was no fucking sequel to Private Benjamin. So eventually
- 19:56Speaker 1: I just eventually I just had to transfer schools. I
- 19:59Speaker 1: was like, this is dude emiliating.
- 20:04Speaker 2: So we had we had a girl in our grade
- 20:05Speaker 2: do that too. She lied about being part of the
- 20:07Speaker 2: Mini Pops. I don't know if you've ever heard about
- 20:09Speaker 2: the Mini Pops. The Minipops were this like kids cover
- 20:13Speaker 2: band in Canada that were so fucking cool. It was
- 20:16Speaker 2: like everybody wanted to be a mini pop. They would
- 20:18Speaker 2: release records that were just covers of like awesome eighties songs.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And so this girl came to school one day and
- 20:24Speaker 2: she was like, I'm going to be a mini pop
- 20:27Speaker 2: and we couldn't believe it. We were floored. It was
- 20:31Speaker 2: the most exciting thing. And then she wasn't like it
- 20:34Speaker 2: wasn't true. And I just remember when this whole Becky
- 20:38Speaker 2: thing happened. I was like, I'm going to be exactly
- 20:40Speaker 2: like the minipops.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, girl, how is Tom Arnold?
- 20:45Speaker 2: Oh my god?
- 20:46Speaker 1: He was.
- 20:47Speaker 2: He was great to me. He was very I think
- 20:49Speaker 2: ever since that kind of phone call, like he was
- 20:52Speaker 2: always really supportive of me.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Oh, sorry, I didn't mean Tom Arnold. I met the
- 20:56Speaker 1: father that played the John Goodman. Sorry. I didn't mean
- 20:59Speaker 1: to ask about Tom Arnolds. Who cares. I mean, I
- 21:02Speaker 1: know Tom Arnold, I don't need YadA. Yeah, I want
- 21:04Speaker 1: to know about the dad because he seemed awesome.
- 21:07Speaker 2: He was, I mean, that was like crazy. He was
- 21:10Speaker 2: one of my idols at the time, obviously, and like
- 21:13Speaker 2: now I was working with him in my dressing room,
- 21:14Speaker 2: was right beside him and I was. I mean, I
- 21:17Speaker 2: had no business being there. I had literally never worked
- 21:20Speaker 2: except for on a couple of Canadian productions where I
- 21:22Speaker 2: would like answer the phone in a movie and be
- 21:24Speaker 2: like mom phone. And that was like the totality of
- 21:27Speaker 2: my body of work before having gone onto that set.
- 21:30Speaker 2: And then it was like John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sarah Gilbert,
- 21:35Speaker 2: Johnny Gallechi, Sandra Bernhardt, Fred Willard, like the craziest group.
- 21:40Speaker 2: ID just sit there and watch. But John Goodman was
- 21:44Speaker 2: so kind, like he was he went out of his
- 21:47Speaker 2: way to kind of like make me feel okay, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 2: like he'd be like, hey, kid, how you doing, And
- 21:53Speaker 2: he didn't do that. And then obviously just to like
- 21:56Speaker 2: watch him work and what he would do with a
- 21:57Speaker 2: script from the Monday morning table read till the Thursday
- 22:01Speaker 2: night tape night and try different things, and I would
- 22:03Speaker 2: just kind of watch him and he's one of the
- 22:09Speaker 2: most Yeah, he's just so talented.
- 22:11Speaker 1: So that was a great preparation for you for Scrubs, right,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I mean, that was kind of like college for Scrubs.
- 22:17Speaker 2: It was. It was college for Scrubs, but it's like
- 22:19Speaker 2: such a different experience, Like I feel like on Roseanne.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I was so young and so new and so and
- 22:26Speaker 2: it's different, such a different experience. I hadn't even really
- 22:28Speaker 2: pre thought of replacing a character, and you're trying to
- 22:30Speaker 2: like fit into that mold, and luckily I was kind
- 22:35Speaker 2: of young and naive and didn't really understand it, Like
- 22:37Speaker 2: I didn't really think about the expectations maybe that would
- 22:41Speaker 2: be put on, like filling those shoes. But then in Scrubs,
- 22:47Speaker 2: it was when it felt like it was my first
- 22:50Speaker 2: experience of like it feeling so creative because I got
- 22:53Speaker 2: to really create the character. Like Bill had written this
- 22:57Speaker 2: character that was I read it and I was like, fuck,
- 22:59Speaker 2: this is so good. I want to be a part
- 23:00Speaker 2: of this so badly. The character description said moves and
- 23:04Speaker 2: talks at a faster pace than normal humans, and that
- 23:07Speaker 2: was something that I'd always struggled with, like everyone's always
- 23:10Speaker 2: like slow down in life in space to me too,
- 23:13Speaker 2: me too, and it's hard. You just want to We're busy,
- 23:17Speaker 2: we got to get we got to get all the
- 23:18Speaker 2: information out, and so I thought, Okay, this is like
- 23:21Speaker 2: my part, and then Bill ended up like tailoring our
- 23:26Speaker 2: parts and adding all of our own quirks and selves,
- 23:30Speaker 2: like Elliott wasn't written as a disaster who fell and
- 23:33Speaker 2: hurt herself all the time. And then that was just
- 23:35Speaker 2: woven in very early on when they realized that I
- 23:38Speaker 2: still had not figured out where my body was in space.
- 23:41Speaker 2: But that felt like the comedy masterclass, like getting to
- 23:43Speaker 2: work with Bill. He would come to set every rehearsal,
- 23:48Speaker 2: which is super rare from my experience, like I've never
- 23:50Speaker 2: had that happen where the showrunner comes every single rehearsal
- 23:53Speaker 2: and comes up and goes like, Okay, you know, try
- 23:56Speaker 2: this differently, try these two alts instead of that joke.
- 23:59Speaker 2: See which one you know works the best. He was
- 24:01Speaker 2: super collaborative and gave us so much freedom that is,
- 24:05Speaker 2: you know, we'd get it once exactly as written, and
- 24:07Speaker 2: then he'd be like, oh, if this line says I
- 24:10Speaker 2: told you so, if you want, you can just do
- 24:11Speaker 2: like and I told you so song and dance instead
- 24:14Speaker 2: if you feel like it. And so I feel like
- 24:17Speaker 2: I got to learn like so much about comedy just
- 24:21Speaker 2: from watching him work and how he would take a
- 24:24Speaker 2: scene and if it wasn't working, he'd be like, Okay,
- 24:26Speaker 2: let's try this, try that, try that. It was so
- 24:28Speaker 2: lucky and so fun, and because we were shooting in
- 24:31Speaker 2: this like abandoned hospital in the valley, we felt kind
- 24:35Speaker 2: of removed from everything, and so it created this interesting
- 24:37Speaker 2: dynamic of feeling like a very collaborative space, and there
- 24:43Speaker 2: was also like a real I think my favorite part
- 24:46Speaker 2: about it was there was a real feeling that you
- 24:50Speaker 2: could fail, like just try anything, which obviously in comedy
- 24:53Speaker 2: I think that's the only way it can really work
- 24:55Speaker 2: if you're not thinking about what you look like while
- 24:58Speaker 2: you're doing it, what you just like any of the
- 25:00Speaker 2: their factors. Just try it. If it doesn't work, they
- 25:02Speaker 2: won't use it. And so we really were freed up
- 25:04Speaker 2: to try anything.
- 25:05Speaker 1: That's awesome. I love to hear that. That's so like
- 25:08Speaker 1: creatively fulfilling. I mean, you know, to just to be
- 25:11Speaker 1: able to spread your wings and fly and have somebody
- 25:14Speaker 1: just show you. Because that show was original and it's
- 25:16Speaker 1: it's like it had it used devices that we hadn't
- 25:19Speaker 1: seen before on those kinds of shows.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it did, And I remember thinking that when I
- 25:24Speaker 2: read the script, like I I was like, oh, I
- 25:26Speaker 2: haven't seen anything like this. And I had just moved
- 25:30Speaker 2: to LA with my best friend and we didn't know anybody,
- 25:33Speaker 2: and we never had was it one of the gems?
- 25:35Speaker 2: It was one of the gems. It was one of
- 25:38Speaker 2: the gens. She'd gone to film school at UBC and
- 25:40Speaker 2: Vancouver and wanted to produce, and I wanted to act,
- 25:42Speaker 2: and so we packed up her truck with the most
- 25:46Speaker 2: random shit. It was like Steve Martin and the jerk
- 25:48Speaker 2: when he's like, I just need this mug and this thing.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Like we had, like I packed a guitar that I
- 25:52Speaker 2: didn't know how to play, and we were going to
- 25:54Speaker 2: go for like a six month sublet, and then I
- 25:57Speaker 2: stayed seventeen years. But you know, Jen and I had
- 26:00Speaker 2: plans to go to a concert and I got two
- 26:04Speaker 2: auditions for the next day. And normally I would just
- 26:06Speaker 2: be like, Okay, I've got to work on these auditions.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not cancling on Jen, We're going
- 26:10Speaker 2: to the concert. I don't care. And I come home
- 26:12Speaker 2: to this envelope, these two envelopes for these two auditions,
- 26:16Speaker 2: and it's midnight and my audition for scrubs is at
- 26:18Speaker 2: nine AM. And I open it and I start reading
- 26:20Speaker 2: it and I'm like turning the pages and I'm like,
- 26:23Speaker 2: oh fuck, oh, this is so good shit. I like,
- 26:27Speaker 2: now it's the auditions happening in like eight hours and
- 26:29Speaker 2: fifty nine minutes. And I never opened the other envelope.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I have no idea what that audition was. And I
- 26:36Speaker 2: just worked for a couple of hours and then got
- 26:38Speaker 2: some sleep and went and read for casting, and they
- 26:40Speaker 2: were like, can you come back in a few hours
- 26:42Speaker 2: and read for Bill? But yeah, I remember reading the
- 26:45Speaker 2: script thinking like, oh, this is so different and like
- 26:48Speaker 2: you said, using devices we hadn't seen. And I loved
- 26:50Speaker 2: the pace of it. And I laughed out loud reading
- 26:54Speaker 2: the script, which was so rare, and.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I love it. I love that. I love that you
- 26:58Speaker 1: get to I mean, like, who would have ever thought
- 27:00Speaker 1: like all of these shows and all of these successful
- 27:02Speaker 1: series would be rebooted. Like if someone told you when
- 27:05Speaker 1: you were doing it the first time, you're going to
- 27:06Speaker 1: be doing this again twenty five years later, nobody would
- 27:09Speaker 1: be like, I'm not even going to be alive, then
- 27:11Speaker 1: there's no.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Chance, totally totally. Who's fifty? Like that sound like what? Yeah?
- 27:18Speaker 1: Exactly? What about Okay, let's talk about being fifty. Let's
- 27:21Speaker 1: talk about like that age, because it's not what I
- 27:24Speaker 1: expected at all. It's like so much better. It's so
- 27:26Speaker 1: much like you know, I feel so much younger than
- 27:28Speaker 1: I ever thought I would feel. I feel younger than
- 27:30Speaker 1: I felt when I was in my thirties. But let's
- 27:32Speaker 1: talk about advice that you've been given, good or bad,
- 27:35Speaker 1: that has had an impact on your life.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yeah, first of all, I completely agree with you. Like,
- 27:39Speaker 2: I'm turning fifty this coming August, and I mean, if
- 27:44Speaker 2: you were to say, like, how old do you like,
- 27:45Speaker 2: I feel like I my brain stopped at like thirty three,
- 27:48Speaker 2: I think is the age that I always think I am.
- 27:50Speaker 2: And Yeah, to have had this lucky career I'm very
- 27:55Speaker 2: grateful for because it has allowed me to be able
- 27:58Speaker 2: to raise my kids. You know, like when you're when
- 28:01Speaker 2: you're working, you're working hard, but then you have these
- 28:03Speaker 2: chunks of time where you're off and you can be
- 28:05Speaker 2: totally present and do that. In terms of advice that
- 28:09Speaker 2: I've been given that's been good.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Or bad or bad, we like bad advice too.
- 28:13Speaker 2: We like bad advice. Okay, I'll start with good. My
- 28:15Speaker 2: dad's favorite expression was the best time to plant apple
- 28:18Speaker 2: orchard was twenty five years ago. The second best time
- 28:20Speaker 2: is today. And I feel like that he told us
- 28:25Speaker 2: when we were little. I think about it often because
- 28:28Speaker 2: it's like anytime I'm like, okay, it's too late, Like
- 28:31Speaker 2: I think through your whole life, you always feel like,
- 28:33Speaker 2: oh fuck, is it too late? Is it too late
- 28:34Speaker 2: to do this? And it's like never too late, Like
- 28:37Speaker 2: it's actually never too late, Like I wonder.
- 28:38Speaker 1: We just had this conversation, me and three girlfriends. We
- 28:40Speaker 1: were just talking about this and like the idea of ascension,
- 28:44Speaker 1: like we are always ascending. Like just because something hasn't
- 28:47Speaker 1: happened yet doesn't mean it's going to happen. It's not
- 28:49Speaker 1: going to happen because of your age. Your age is
- 28:51Speaker 1: not preventative of what your desires are. It's actually an enhancement.
- 28:57Speaker 1: It makes it more likely to happen because it's still
- 28:59Speaker 1: on your mind. And like, oh I was gonna do that,
- 29:02Speaker 1: and I didn't do it before I turned fifty. That
- 29:04Speaker 1: means it's gonna be even better when you do do
- 29:06Speaker 1: it after fifty, not that it's not happening.
- 29:08Speaker 2: One hundred percent. And exactly when you do it, you're
- 29:11Speaker 2: like really gonna do it, and you're gonna do it
- 29:12Speaker 2: at a time in your life that you're ready to
- 29:13Speaker 2: do it. Like I was like, I want to learn
- 29:15Speaker 2: how to play an instrument. I'm like it too late,
- 29:16Speaker 2: and I was like, no, it's not too late.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not exactly. We were just talking about this
- 29:20Speaker 1: and I was like, got you know, oh, if I
- 29:22Speaker 1: don't do this by that time I'm thirty or the
- 29:24Speaker 1: time I'm forty, and that's like such backwards thinking. It's like, oh,
- 29:26Speaker 1: this now that I'm this experience, this much wiser and
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm this much smarter, I'm not going to even fuck
- 29:31Speaker 1: this up when it does happen, you know, Like I'm tuned.
- 29:35Speaker 2: In now totally. And I feel like even with like skiing,
- 29:40Speaker 2: you know, like I was like the other day, I
- 29:41Speaker 2: was like I want to go take some more lessons
- 29:44Speaker 2: and kind of like bring my skiing to the next stage,
- 29:48Speaker 2: because like I grew up skiing my first job, I
- 29:50Speaker 2: was a ski instructor, and then I took My kids
- 29:52Speaker 2: are six years apart, so I feel like I spent like,
- 29:55Speaker 2: you know, they were in between my skis when they
- 29:56Speaker 2: were one and a half and then on the harness
- 29:59Speaker 2: and then kind of like everyone else is going off
- 30:01Speaker 2: and doing the real runs and you're like on the
- 30:02Speaker 2: little ones for and then I had another kid and
- 30:04Speaker 2: they did, so I feel like I took such a
- 30:06Speaker 2: long chunk off of like really skiing, and when I
- 30:09Speaker 2: went back to it, I was like, oh, I feel
- 30:10Speaker 2: like I'm skiing with the technique of like the old
- 30:13Speaker 2: equipment and the old technology and those skis that weren't
- 30:16Speaker 2: shaped and so right.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, I get that.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I just feel like having like a just in
- 30:21Speaker 2: general open mind to like it's never too late, it's
- 30:25Speaker 2: never too late to try anything. I feel like in
- 30:29Speaker 2: so many aspects of my life, I feel like things
- 30:31Speaker 2: are just the best they've been or taking off, Like
- 30:35Speaker 2: in the relationship that I'm in has been so fun
- 30:38Speaker 2: and so fulfilling and so interesting to you know, have
- 30:41Speaker 2: so much in common and so like, Yeah, I feel
- 30:44Speaker 2: like in all aspects it feels like fifty is amazing.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like you're peaking. But I don't even believe
- 30:50Speaker 1: in peaking either, because we're ascending. That's what we're calling it.
- 30:53Speaker 1: We're ascending until we die. We are in a sense,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and what that means we just keep getting better and
- 30:58Speaker 1: better and better, Like it is a ref fine, beautiful thing.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Like I am totally down with that. I can't believe
- 31:03Speaker 1: the garbage we've been listening to our whole lives or
- 31:06Speaker 1: are absorbing just kind of this narrative that's just not true. Anyway,
- 31:11Speaker 1: Let's move on to callers before we run out of time. Catherine, Sorry,
- 31:14Speaker 1: we got caught up in this level conversation.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I'm going to think of that about a sension that's
- 31:18Speaker 2: gonna be nice.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yes, please, yes, do it. Let's spread spread that messaging.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Women need to hear this.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Well.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Our first caller today is l And this is not
- 31:31Speaker 3: a question about baseball. It's a question about struggling through setbacks.
- 31:35Speaker 3: So El says, you're Chelsea. My son is sixteen and
- 31:38Speaker 3: struggles to process setbacks and perceived failure. He's at the
- 31:41Speaker 3: top of his class, takes multiple ap courses, and thrives
- 31:44Speaker 3: in academic environments, even though he claims his classes are boring.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Many things in life come easily to him, except baseball setbacks.
- 31:51Speaker 3: He's been playing baseball since he was about five, and
- 31:54Speaker 3: even after entering high school, he was often the strongest
- 31:56Speaker 3: player on his team. He's currently on a competitive travel team,
- 32:00Speaker 3: so the level of play is higher and he has
- 32:01Speaker 3: to work harder. In theory, there should be a healthy
- 32:04Speaker 3: learning and growth experience, but in reality, any perceived poor
- 32:07Speaker 3: performance sends him into an intense spiral of self criticism
- 32:11Speaker 3: and frustration that can last for hours. But baseball doesn't
- 32:14Speaker 3: allow hours to process emotions. The game continues and he's
- 32:17Speaker 3: expected to stay mentally present for his team. He becomes
- 32:20Speaker 3: angry with himself, his performance suffers, and this only reinforces
- 32:24Speaker 3: the cycle. We currently have him in therapy, though he
- 32:26Speaker 3: doesn't have buy in. He views his reactions as normal
- 32:29Speaker 3: teenage emotions, which, to some extent they are. Our goal
- 32:32Speaker 3: isn't to pathologize his feelings, but to help him develop
- 32:35Speaker 3: coping strategies so that setbacks don't derail his mood, confidence,
- 32:38Speaker 3: or performance for the rest of the game and be
- 32:40Speaker 3: on the field. We've tried a gratitude journal, which he
- 32:43Speaker 3: didn't take very seriously, and his therapist has given him
- 32:45Speaker 3: strategies to practice in the moment, but the cycle persists.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Do you have any suggestions for helping him process these
- 32:51Speaker 3: emotions in a healthier way? Are there any strategies you'd
- 32:54Speaker 3: recommend that we might not have tried with gratitude?
- 32:56Speaker 1: L Hi, L Hi? How are you? This is our
- 33:00Speaker 1: special guest, Sarah chalk.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Oh, nice to meet you.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Hi Hi.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I have a friend who's staying with me right now, Whistler,
- 33:08Speaker 1: and her daughter is in the same situation that your
- 33:10Speaker 1: son is very successful athlete. Young had a like, you know,
- 33:14Speaker 1: bad day playing and was devastated by it, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 1: And I think those are all really natural emotions, but
- 33:21Speaker 1: for a kids to like, if they want to take them, like,
- 33:24Speaker 1: they have to get into like a championship mentality, right,
- 33:28Speaker 1: Like if they're gonna really be successful at this, they
- 33:31Speaker 1: have to out smart themselves. And like, there's got to
- 33:35Speaker 1: be a lot of books on this, Jamie, did you
- 33:37Speaker 1: say you knew about a book about this? She's I'm
- 33:39Speaker 1: gonna have her come upstairs because we literally just had
- 33:41Speaker 1: this conversation about her daughter last night, and she's like,
- 33:43Speaker 1: it is what it is. She didn't have a good
- 33:45Speaker 1: day today. She's just gonna have to deal with it.
- 33:47Speaker 1: That's the like the mentality of a champ Like if
- 33:49Speaker 1: you're you're gonna have to deal with your emotions and
- 33:51Speaker 1: you can't spiral every time, and that's something that he's
- 33:54Speaker 1: just gonna kind of have to learn. This woman's calling
- 33:56Speaker 1: in with the same thing we were talking about yesterday,
- 33:58Speaker 1: her son like flipped expiraling out when he has a
- 34:01Speaker 1: bad play and stuff. Do you want to hop on
- 34:03Speaker 1: and give her some advice? Here, this is my friend.
- 34:05Speaker 1: She just happens to be in town.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Hi, beautiful Jamie, Hi gorgeous.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Hi.
- 34:11Speaker 3: So, her son is struggling with feelings of self criticism
- 34:15Speaker 3: and especially when he's playing baseball, and so like he
- 34:19Speaker 3: needs tools to like quickly process those emotions.
- 34:21Speaker 1: How old is he?
- 34:23Speaker 4: He's sixteen?
- 34:24Speaker 5: Okay, I have the same thing of a fifteen year
- 34:26Speaker 5: old superstar softball player. So what I've learned from this journey.
- 34:31Speaker 5: I also played sports in college, and I wish I
- 34:33Speaker 5: had this information when I was in college because I
- 34:35Speaker 5: think it would have made me a better competitor. Is
- 34:39Speaker 5: it's all mental? Everything is mental. Has he hit home
- 34:43Speaker 5: runs before? Has he made double plays?
- 34:46Speaker 6: Yes, well, he's gotten triples before. He's ever hit it
- 34:50Speaker 6: over and out of the park, right, he's made double plays.
- 34:53Speaker 4: He's a really good player.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Yeah, but he's a perfectionist yeah yeah, And he's just
- 35:00Speaker 5: criticizes himself when he doesn't perform right. So, Like, I
- 35:04Speaker 5: think the most important thing an athlete can do is
- 35:07Speaker 5: work on their mental game. Does he journal No.
- 35:11Speaker 6: I tried having them, Like Catherine said, I tried having
- 35:13Speaker 6: him write a gratitude journal. This was last summer, and
- 35:16Speaker 6: he we would go through what he would write in there,
- 35:20Speaker 6: because at first, like he he thinks he's a normal team.
- 35:23Speaker 6: He doesn't think that anything that is happening with his
- 35:26Speaker 6: emotions is out of the ordinary. And again it's it's not.
- 35:30Speaker 5: It's not it's how you can train your brain to
- 35:34Speaker 5: it's it's really a mental thing. So like my daughter,
- 35:37Speaker 5: what she started doing, I mean, she wants to play
- 35:39Speaker 5: D one, so this is all her journey. I don't
- 35:42Speaker 5: push her, this is her thing. But she started journaling.
- 35:46Speaker 5: So before she'll do hitting lessons, before a group practice,
- 35:50Speaker 5: before any sort of work she's doing, she'll put what
- 35:53Speaker 5: her expectations are for the practice, and then after the
- 35:57Speaker 5: practice she'll put in did she accomplish that? What did
- 36:00Speaker 5: she need to work on next practice? And so it's
- 36:02Speaker 5: always just like looking at what you've done and what
- 36:08Speaker 5: you need to do right now. It sounds like it's
- 36:10Speaker 5: all a mental thing. So that's what he should be
- 36:13Speaker 5: focusing on. There's a book called, I think it's called Champion.
- 36:16Speaker 5: The Champion mind be the champion mind or something like that.
- 36:19Speaker 5: She started reading that she talks to a mental coach.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:22Speaker 5: I mean, it's so different from when I was growing up.
- 36:24Speaker 5: We didn't have anything. I was just like, if I sucked,
- 36:26Speaker 5: I would just be in like a dark hole. But
- 36:29Speaker 5: you know, and all the high end coaches all tell
- 36:33Speaker 5: if you watch any tiktoks or Instagram, they all tell
- 36:36Speaker 5: the players like what we're watching. We don't care if
- 36:39Speaker 5: you're a baller. We don't care if you have one
- 36:41Speaker 5: hundred percent batting average. We care about your body language.
- 36:44Speaker 5: So if you strike out three times in a row,
- 36:47Speaker 5: do you go in the dugout and bring everybody down
- 36:48Speaker 5: with your energy or do you, you know, come in
- 36:51Speaker 5: and just realize what you did wrong and move on,
- 36:54Speaker 5: turn the page.
- 36:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Yeah, And it's hard for them to pull back and
- 36:58Speaker 5: look at themselves. But you're on a team sport. If
- 37:00Speaker 5: you want to go torture yourself, go swim, go golf,
- 37:03Speaker 5: go tennis. But this is a team sport, So bring
- 37:07Speaker 5: the good energy even when shit is bad. And what's
- 37:09Speaker 5: great about all this is it's such a good lesson
- 37:11Speaker 5: for life.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I've done my way to drap on the knowledge.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Yes, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go warm my toes
- 37:20Speaker 5: for the Whistler Hill. Here's your host, Chelsea Hammler.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I really had to put her on the spot there,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you guys, and she delivered.
- 37:30Speaker 2: That was late. I think what she said about like
- 37:35Speaker 2: being a perfectionist is so true, Like and I was
- 37:38Speaker 2: a perfectionist as a kid and experienced, you know, really
- 37:42Speaker 2: trying to figure out how to go back to a
- 37:44Speaker 2: growth mindset, like I think I had one initially and
- 37:47Speaker 2: then as you work going back into the auditioning process,
- 37:49Speaker 2: I really got out of that. And in terms of like,
- 37:53Speaker 2: you know, because I was a kid who like if
- 37:55Speaker 2: I was doing a project on Sri Lanka, I was
- 37:56Speaker 2: cutting every page out into the shape of an elephant,
- 37:58Speaker 2: Like don't do that, just travel later. That makes no sense.
- 38:01Speaker 2: And I, you know, in terms of team sports, like
- 38:05Speaker 2: it's all I wanted. I just want to be on
- 38:07Speaker 2: a team, Like I would take any fucking team. I
- 38:08Speaker 2: was like, I tried it for basketball, volleyball, the track
- 38:11Speaker 2: and field team. I was like, whoever will take me?
- 38:14Speaker 2: Nobody would, So I got used to a level of
- 38:18Speaker 2: rejection that I think actually is why I ended up
- 38:21Speaker 2: being able to go into acting. But I think, like
- 38:24Speaker 2: for your son and for the times of days that
- 38:26Speaker 2: doesn't work out, I actually think it's really true that
- 38:29Speaker 2: you learn so much more from failure than you do
- 38:31Speaker 2: from your successes. So every like if you're going and
- 38:33Speaker 2: you're hitting a home run every time, like, actually it's incredible,
- 38:36Speaker 2: But I don't think you're learning anything that's going to
- 38:38Speaker 2: help you grow. And so because the reality is like
- 38:42Speaker 2: I don't know if the goal for him is to
- 38:44Speaker 2: become like a professional baseball player or if it's just
- 38:46Speaker 2: to do it right now with his buddies. But if
- 38:48Speaker 2: he's out there and he's failing, it's obviously not failing.
- 38:51Speaker 2: But I mean, if he's not doing let's say it
- 38:53Speaker 2: doesn't go the way that he wants, he's going to
- 38:55Speaker 2: come out of that. And right now, like you said,
- 38:56Speaker 2: he's working through it and he's trying the gratitude journal,
- 38:59Speaker 2: you're trying therapy, trying all these different things. Those are
- 39:01Speaker 2: all tools that are going to serve him in every
- 39:05Speaker 2: area of his life. No, because none of us are
- 39:08Speaker 2: going to no matter what we do, we're not going
- 39:09Speaker 2: to go out there and it's not going to be
- 39:11Speaker 2: a successful day. All of the days most days, and
- 39:14Speaker 2: I think like if you can, like just the fact
- 39:17Speaker 2: that you're and him are aware of it and trying
- 39:20Speaker 2: to work through the tools. I guess the other part
- 39:22Speaker 2: of it is what's the goal for him in terms
- 39:25Speaker 2: of like does he want to take this the whole
- 39:29Speaker 2: way and if not, what is the best spot for him?
- 39:32Speaker 2: Like my niece played professional or not professional. She played
- 39:35Speaker 2: field hockey at a high level. She was on Team Canada,
- 39:37Speaker 2: and when she stopped, her enjoyment of the game went
- 39:41Speaker 2: like through the room. She's an incredible field hockey player.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But sometimes I think when you're a kid and you're
- 39:46Speaker 2: a teenager and you're dealing with all of the elements
- 39:49Speaker 2: of being a teenager and the pressures of school and
- 39:52Speaker 2: all of that, like to take the pressure cooker out
- 39:56Speaker 2: of it, and they can actually just really enjoy the
- 39:58Speaker 2: sport can be really cool too. I mean obviously that
- 40:01Speaker 2: balance with you know, yeah them pushing through the heart
- 40:04Speaker 2: is probably the most important part.
- 40:06Speaker 1: But also, like I think what Jamie said is like like,
- 40:08Speaker 1: for first of all, of course, the gratitude journal, like
- 40:11Speaker 1: most adult men are not going to do that, you know,
- 40:13Speaker 1: so like if you could, if you pivot and make
- 40:15Speaker 1: a journal about journaling, like about his expectations, about before practices,
- 40:19Speaker 1: about what he expects, and also emphasize that team component aspect,
- 40:23Speaker 1: like you want to be a leader, you want to
- 40:25Speaker 1: be a champion, then you need to actually get into
- 40:28Speaker 1: like a kick into a different gear when you're disappointed
- 40:31Speaker 1: in your own performance, you know what I mean. You
- 40:33Speaker 1: can't bring other people down with you. I think that
- 40:35Speaker 1: will have an impact on him as well.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Do you have any advice for when he's in the
- 40:40Speaker 6: moment when something doesn't go because like in his mind,
- 40:44Speaker 6: even if he hits a pop fly, that's a horrible
- 40:46Speaker 6: hit because pop flies are at his level of play
- 40:48Speaker 6: now ninety nine percent of the time caught, and he's
- 40:52Speaker 6: just like now done for the game essentially, Like he
- 40:54Speaker 6: was even ejected out of a game by the umpire
- 40:58Speaker 6: for arguing a call. And it's just in the moment,
- 41:01Speaker 6: like I can get him to do I think like
- 41:03Speaker 6: the because two hours after a game he's like totally fine.
- 41:06Speaker 4: He's like, oh yeah, I'm good. I'm like, but I
- 41:09Speaker 4: need you to be good like in that moment, because
- 41:11Speaker 4: now you're just hurting your team.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I don't know if you can get buy in on this,
- 41:15Speaker 3: But meditating on a daily basis, even if it's like
- 41:18Speaker 3: five ten minutes, can help slow him down in those
- 41:21Speaker 3: moments so he's not like.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Just having this super like fast reaction. It really does
- 41:27Speaker 2: help you.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Have a more measured response when when stuff like that happens.
- 41:30Speaker 3: And it doesn't even have to be like woo woo meditations.
- 41:34Speaker 3: It can be simple box breathing or counting to ten
- 41:37Speaker 3: with his breaths, or even just doing you know, really
- 41:40Speaker 3: short basic meditations on headspace or an app like that.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I think your role is just to really be a
- 41:45Speaker 1: guide for to hear him when he is looking for
- 41:48Speaker 1: answers that you can help him to find those answers.
- 41:51Speaker 1: You guys will work together to find those answers. If
- 41:54Speaker 1: he's disappointed in his own behavior and his reaction, then
- 41:57Speaker 1: that's an opening for you to go, Okay, we can
- 42:00Speaker 1: figure this out together. I can help you this. This
- 42:03Speaker 1: study says all we have to do is meditate five
- 42:05Speaker 1: minutes a day. He's not going to like that either,
- 42:07Speaker 1: but you can do it with him. You can sit
- 42:08Speaker 1: there and say, this is going to help your brain
- 42:10Speaker 1: regulate so that when you are in that moment and
- 42:13Speaker 1: you are feeling super reactive, you can pull back and
- 42:16Speaker 1: just be quiet and think of your team instead of
- 42:18Speaker 1: thinking of yourself and your reactivity, and like just taking
- 42:21Speaker 1: all those moments without being too kind of officious, because
- 42:25Speaker 1: of course you're's mother and you care more about him
- 42:27Speaker 1: than anybody in the world, but just to be like
- 42:30Speaker 1: this calming force around him so that he keeps coming
- 42:33Speaker 1: to you when he wants answers, so that you're the
- 42:37Speaker 1: calm and he's the storm, and that he knows where
- 42:40Speaker 1: the calm is going to be.
- 42:41Speaker 3: And then just one more thing I want to flag
- 42:43Speaker 3: all before you go, is if he is being really
- 42:46Speaker 3: self critical and irritable, especially irritable outside of practice, I
- 42:51Speaker 3: would keep an eye on that because that can be
- 42:52Speaker 3: a sign of depression in teenage boys. So just keep
- 42:55Speaker 3: an eye on that outside of base on two.
- 42:57Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely know. We're very aware, like he's putting a
- 43:01Speaker 4: lot of pressure on himself.
- 43:03Speaker 6: My husband and I tell him, like, you don't have
- 43:04Speaker 6: to play, Like we're cool if you don't want to play,
- 43:07Speaker 6: but he loves the game and he wants to play
- 43:11Speaker 6: and he wants to do really well.
- 43:13Speaker 4: And it's like, oh, but it's hurting you.
- 43:15Speaker 1: I know, but you know that's something he's going to
- 43:17Speaker 1: have to figure out for himself, Like there's nothing you
- 43:19Speaker 1: can do. He's going to have to decide if it's
- 43:21Speaker 1: worth the feelings that come with, you know, not always succeeding,
- 43:25Speaker 1: Like is it worth it? Are the wins like worth
- 43:27Speaker 1: it with the losses? And that's not something you can
- 43:31Speaker 1: make happen for him. You can only be supportive at
- 43:34Speaker 1: every turn and be like, Okay, you want to do this,
- 43:36Speaker 1: We're going to support you. If you don't want to
- 43:37Speaker 1: do it, we'll totally support you too.
- 43:39Speaker 6: I know I've mentioned so we do have him in therapy.
- 43:41Speaker 6: Do you think finding a new therapist is that something
- 43:44Speaker 6: to do? Because the guy he goes to now and
- 43:46Speaker 6: he's very nice and my son says he likes him,
- 43:49Speaker 6: but then when we drive to his sessions, he's like, yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 6: I don't really think I need this, So like I
- 43:54Speaker 6: feel like his buy in isn't that everybody?
- 43:57Speaker 3: Everybody feels that way on their way to therapy, Like
- 44:00Speaker 3: I don't need this today and then it's your biggest day.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I would keep him in therapy and like, if you
- 44:04Speaker 1: can look for maybe some like a sports therapist or
- 44:07Speaker 1: something that's a little bit more geared to what he's
- 44:08Speaker 1: into in the interim, But don't take him out prematurely.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Just leave him in so he has some sort of
- 44:14Speaker 1: sounding board, but also in the meantime, look for somebody
- 44:16Speaker 1: that you can gear towards more what his interests are.
- 44:19Speaker 2: All right, well, keep us posted.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Okay, okay, thank you, I thanks bye.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Al, thanks for calling in. Wow, that was like a
- 44:26Speaker 1: triage moment.
- 44:27Speaker 2: You guys really like you guys and Jamie stepping in.
- 44:31Speaker 1: All hands on deck. That was serious.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Oh my god. I wanted team sports so badly. Like
- 44:36Speaker 2: I finally said to the coach, I'm like, I just
- 44:38Speaker 2: want to get on the bus. What's nobody signing up for?
- 44:40Speaker 2: And they were like, nobody does racewalking and I was like, great,
- 44:43Speaker 2: I'm in. And so I was racewalking just so.
- 44:48Speaker 1: And were you racewalking all by yourself?
- 44:49Speaker 2: Because it was like a few kids from other schools
- 44:54Speaker 2: in the province. So I came second in the province
- 44:56Speaker 2: because it was probably only two people.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, finish up with our one drink question here.
- 45:02Speaker 3: So Nicky says, I'm a thirty five year old Canadian
- 45:06Speaker 3: passionate about boycotting US travel and products when possible in
- 45:09Speaker 3: the wake of the current administration threatening to invade Canada
- 45:13Speaker 3: and all this fifty first state bullshit.
- 45:15Speaker 2: The problem is that I live in.
- 45:17Speaker 3: The frozen tundra of Winnipeg and my husband wants to
- 45:19Speaker 3: take a vacation somewhere hot while it's still cold. My
- 45:22Speaker 3: husband is a wonderful partner and dad that works incredibly hard.
- 45:25Speaker 3: He's in his first year of being an attending doctor
- 45:28Speaker 3: after fourteen years of training. We have two young kids
- 45:30Speaker 3: and can only manage to get away for a long weekend,
- 45:33Speaker 3: and there are not many direct flights out of Winnipeg.
- 45:35Speaker 3: He would love to go to Phoenix, Vegas or Palm
- 45:38Speaker 3: Springs since it'll be hot and.
- 45:39Speaker 1: We can fly direct.
- 45:41Speaker 3: He agrees with boycotting US travel, but also feels like
- 45:43Speaker 3: we need to live our lives a bit. So my
- 45:45Speaker 3: question is do I make an exception to my boycott
- 45:48Speaker 3: to go on vacation with my husband, who absolutely deserves it.
- 45:50Speaker 1: NICKI no, No, find somewhere else to go or go
- 45:53Speaker 1: to asauna, like, forget about it. Your boycott is a boycott.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I don't know temporary boycotts like you can things to
- 46:00Speaker 1: cancel them. It doesn't work if we're not serious about it.
- 46:03Speaker 1: So if you care about the state of the world,
- 46:05Speaker 1: you have to care about boycotting things altogether. And I'm
- 46:08Speaker 1: believing I'm doing it in my own life, and I'm
- 46:10Speaker 1: doing it with all the people that I work with
- 46:12Speaker 1: and the people that work for me in my house everything.
- 46:14Speaker 1: This is a consideration that we talk about all the time.
- 46:17Speaker 1: It is serious business. So yeah, I mean also, I
- 46:21Speaker 1: joined Noble Mobile. I got off of eighteen and T Verizon.
- 46:24Speaker 1: That's one good thing you can do. You can join
- 46:25Speaker 1: Noble Mobile. They encourage you to stay off of your phone.
- 46:28Speaker 1: They incentivize you to stay off of your phone. My
- 46:31Speaker 1: phone bills have been like thirty five dollars a month
- 46:33Speaker 1: and I travel internationally all the time, so that's a
- 46:35Speaker 1: great first step. Cancel chat GPT, please be on the
- 46:40Speaker 1: only ethical anthropic is the only ethical like AI system
- 46:43Speaker 1: that is available. So try to down get rid of
- 46:46Speaker 1: chat GPT. Like these steps mean things. These people are
- 46:49Speaker 1: making money and profiting off of our prison system, off
- 46:52Speaker 1: of these detention centers. They are making money off of
- 46:55Speaker 1: this all of these AI guys. So if you want
- 46:57Speaker 1: to have an impact, you have to be serious and
- 47:00Speaker 1: your husband can go without his vacation to prompt springs
- 47:02Speaker 1: for the year.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, go to go to BC good Whistler.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I guess that's cool. By the way, it's
- 47:09Speaker 1: it's hot here, so you can come here. I'm sure
- 47:10Speaker 1: it'll be It's like we've got the worst winter. It's
- 47:12Speaker 1: like hot cold, hot cold, so by the time you
- 47:14Speaker 1: get here it could be sunny exactly exactly. And I
- 47:19Speaker 1: say this, I know that you're listening to this, and
- 47:20Speaker 1: people are like, well, it's might be easier for you
- 47:22Speaker 1: because you have more you know, privilege, and I have
- 47:24Speaker 1: more money. It's it's listen, it's hard for all of us.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I use all of those things all the time, and
- 47:29Speaker 1: I have to be disciplined. I never go on chap
- 47:31Speaker 1: GPT ever ever, ever, ever. I barely use anthropic. I
- 47:34Speaker 1: don't want to even get into that. And I know, Sarah,
- 47:37Speaker 1: we've already discussed our limited technology abilities, so it's like
- 47:41Speaker 1: it's hard for me, so those things are kind of
- 47:43Speaker 1: not even that difficult. But I've I've can canceled streaming services,
- 47:47Speaker 1: I stop using Amazon. Like we're doing everything we can
- 47:50Speaker 1: to make sure that you make a dent in these
- 47:52Speaker 1: people's bottom lines, because that's all anybody cares about.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Is money, right, right, and where it hurts.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Yeah, So we'll take a break and we'll be right
- 47:59Speaker 1: back to wrap up with Sarah Chalk. And we're back
- 48:06Speaker 1: with Sarah Chalk. Everyone can watch Scrubs? Where where can
- 48:09Speaker 1: they watch Scrubs.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Sarah on ABC on Wednesday nights and streams the next
- 48:12Speaker 2: day on Hulu Disney Plus.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and Hulu Disney Plus is a perfect example of
- 48:16Speaker 1: somebody who did the wrong thing and then corrected it
- 48:19Speaker 1: and did the right thing. So I canceled that prescription
- 48:21Speaker 1: and then I re downloaded it when they did the
- 48:23Speaker 1: right thing, so you can reward the description subscription was
- 48:26Speaker 1: it did I say prescription? You did too much drugs?
- 48:30Speaker 1: That's a perfect way to go out with our scrub star.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Thank you, Sarah.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I will.
- 48:35Speaker 1: We're gonna have to stay together at some point, Okay,
- 48:38Speaker 1: So I.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Would love it. Yes, I was up. I was up
- 48:41Speaker 2: last week and there was Yeah, there was like no
- 48:43Speaker 2: snow or you know, rained on snow. So I'm so
- 48:47Speaker 2: excited it's coming. And apparently it's like one hundred centimeters
- 48:49Speaker 2: in the next couple of days.
- 48:50Speaker 1: I know, I know, I'm not even I have to
- 48:51Speaker 1: leave on Thursday, but I'm going to be back in
- 48:53Speaker 1: the beginning of April, so I'm going to hit you
- 48:54Speaker 1: up and see if you're around too.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Okay, I would love it. I want to hear about Finland.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, I can't wait to tell you. It was awesome.
- 49:00Speaker 1: It was so beautiful. Yeah, Okay, have a great day, Sarah.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Ok thanks for having me.
- 49:08Speaker 3: The word of the week is officious. Officious adjective intrusive
- 49:14Speaker 3: in a meddling or offensive manner, used to describe someone
- 49:18Speaker 3: that acts more official than they actually are. Volunteering one
- 49:23Speaker 3: surfaces where they are neither asked nor needed. Used in
- 49:27Speaker 3: a sentence, the man spreading Man's planer was both meddlesome
- 49:32Speaker 3: and officious officious.
