- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 119 and we
- 0:19are in the Yad section. Yad.
- 0:23And this is verses 73 through 8073 through 80.
- 0:30And Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God working letter by
- 0:33letter through each section. And all of those sections, all
- 0:37of the verses within those sections begin with one letter
- 0:42of the Hebrew alphabet all the way from A-Z through the Word of
- 0:45God. So let's read in verse #73 today
- 0:49and see what the Lord has for us.
- 0:51Your hands made me, informed me. Give me understanding so that I
- 0:56can learn Your commands. Those who fear you will see me
- 1:01and rejoice, for I put my hope in Your Word.
- 1:06I know, Yahweh, that Your judgments are just and that You
- 1:10have afflicted me fairly. May your faithful love comfort
- 1:14me as you promised Your servant. May Your compassion come to me
- 1:19so that I may live, for Your instruction is my delight.
- 1:24Let the arrogant be put to shame for slandering me with lies.
- 1:28I will meditate on your precepts.
- 1:31Let those who fear you, those who know your decrees, turn to
- 1:34me. May my heart be blameless
- 1:37regarding your statutes, so that I will not be put to shame.
- 1:44Man, this is a great section. Verse 73 I love I love this
- 1:51thought that he gives. He begins saying your hands made
- 1:56me inform you. So God you're my creator.
- 1:58You're the one who made me and so I need you to make me have
- 2:01understanding. He says God you made me, you
- 2:04formed me. You're the one that's in charge
- 2:07of me. You're the one who's put me
- 2:08together. I need you to put one thing more
- 2:10in. I am a 90 nine piece or I'm 100
- 2:16piece puzzle with 99 pieces. I need you to fill in
- 2:21understanding. And this is the same prayer
- 2:24request that Solomon prayed to the Lord.
- 2:26He said, God give me an understanding heart so that I
- 2:29can rule your people Israel. And so here the prayer is give
- 2:33me understanding so that I can learn your commands.
- 2:37So God's the one that made us, and if we're going to be
- 2:40complete and whole, it is going to be as a result of Him
- 2:45teaching us through His Word. Verse 74 Those who fear you will
- 2:51see me and rejoice, for I put my hope in your Word.
- 2:55I can so echo this. People that love the Lord and
- 3:00people that love God's word. Those are the best people in the
- 3:04world to be around. They're people that love church.
- 3:10There are people that love religion and those are not
- 3:15always the most fun to be around.
- 3:17Those aren't always like rejoicing that I see those
- 3:20people, but people that love the word, those are those are my
- 3:25people. I can hang out around those guys
- 3:28all the time. And when I see people like that,
- 3:32when I see people in my church, there's there's one gal that
- 3:37began our attending our church few weeks after I became the
- 3:40pastor here and she had recently accepted the Lord.
- 3:45She followed the Lord in believers baptism, confessing
- 3:49him as her Lord to to others back in June of 24.
- 3:57And it has been so cool seeing her just desire for the word of
- 4:01God. She's met with my wife most
- 4:03every week for the past two years and being able to see her
- 4:08love the Lord. I echo verse 74 because I fear
- 4:12God. I see people learning and
- 4:14excited about the word and I am rejoicing.
- 4:17I'm like, yes, yeah, I this is the best life.
- 4:21Some of my favorite people to listen to in the world, whether
- 4:25it's via, you know, podcast sermon, are people that have
- 4:28dedicated themselves to the word of God, Tim Mackie and John
- 4:34Collins over the At the Bible Project.
- 4:36They love the word of God, and so I love listening to them.
- 4:41There's just nothing better. I want to encourage you be
- 4:45someone that loves the word that has put your hope in the word of
- 4:49God. Be someone that other people are
- 4:51delighted to be around because they're like, oh man, I know I'm
- 4:54going to hear a word from God when I talked to that person
- 4:56today because they they spend time in the word.
- 5:00And so when they talk to me, something about the words going
- 5:04to come out, something that they've learned or something
- 5:07that encouraged them or something that challenged them
- 5:09or something that they read and they thought of me is going to
- 5:12happen. And so I'm going to get a word
- 5:14from God as I interact with this person.
- 5:17Let's plan on that's the kind of person that I am going to be.
- 5:21I'm going to be someone the word of God can't help but spell out
- 5:24of over and over and over again, verse 75, I know Yahweh that
- 5:30your judgments are just and that you have afflicted me fairly.
- 5:34He says, God, sometimes you got to bring the hammer down.
- 5:38Sometimes you need to discipline me, but God, I know that when
- 5:42you do so, it's just, it's right.
- 5:44It's proportionate to what I have done.
- 5:48And it was not to, like harm me. It was to bring me back to you.
- 5:54Is that the mindset that you have when God disciplines you?
- 6:00When some bad thing happens in your life, to you go, God.
- 6:05How could you allow anything less than idyllic perfection to
- 6:08happen to me? Or do you go, God?
- 6:11Thanks. I didn't realize how much faith
- 6:15I was putting in my bank account before you had me have to pay
- 6:20this giant amount out of my bank account.
- 6:23Yeah. God, Thank you.
- 6:25I I needed that. Or.
- 6:26God, I I didn't realize how proud I was until that person
- 6:33said something about me. And then I realized.
- 6:35Oh, you know that like, oh, no, I am great.
- 6:39I am this. How could they say something
- 6:42about me? It showed I had pride in my
- 6:45heart. God, thank you.
- 6:46Your afflictions of me, they were fair, they were good, and
- 6:50they were to bless me, not to harm me.
- 6:54That's a really important place that we all need to get to.
- 7:00Very rarely, especially in America, we would much rather
- 7:05only have smooth sailing. But walking with the Lord is
- 7:09never smooth sailing. If we are going to walk with
- 7:14Jesus, if we're going to live godly lives, Paul tells us in
- 7:18Second Timothy 2 that all those that will choose to live godly
- 7:23in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
- 7:26We're going to go through hard times.
- 7:27We're going to experience afflictions.
- 7:29We're going to be like Job walking with the Lord, faithful
- 7:32that God himself says there's no one like this dude in all of the
- 7:35earth. A complete a mature man who
- 7:39loves me and follows me with all of his heart.
- 7:42And Satan wanted to try and get a piece of him.
- 7:45And the same is true for us. May we rejoice in the
- 7:49afflictions that we have, or as James tells us, and James one,
- 7:53my brothers and sisters, count it all joy when you fall into
- 7:56various temptations. Knowing this, that the trying of
- 8:00your faith produces endurance. But let endurance have it's
- 8:04perfect, it's completing, it's maturing work so that you may be
- 8:09perfect and complete needing nothing again.
- 8:15That's just that's, that's something worthy to meditate on
- 8:18for a hot minute. I'm, I'm pretty sure I'll be
- 8:20carrying that with me for the rest of the day.
- 8:22Verse #76 May your faithful love comfort me as you promised your
- 8:26servant. God's love is meant to comfort
- 8:29us. God's love isn't a scare tactic.
- 8:32It's not. I will not love you unless it
- 8:35is. I've loved you with an
- 8:37everlasting love. Receive it, embrace it, and it
- 8:41is always there for us. We can find love or we can find
- 8:44comfort from the love of God, and it is promised to us in
- 8:48Christ Jesus, and it's promised to the whole world.
- 8:51John 316 For God loved the world in this way, that he gave his
- 8:55one and only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not
- 8:58perish, but will have eternal life.
- 9:01Verse 77 here, may your compassion come to me so that I
- 9:05may live for your instruction is my delight.
- 9:08God, I need you to care about me, to have sympathy, empathy,
- 9:13compassion towards me. I compassion isn't a virtue for
- 9:18some aspects of our culture anymore.
- 9:21There's a couple people that frankly, they're, they're, I'm,
- 9:27I'm going to say misguided because I don't know, their
- 9:30heart could be nefarious. But I, I think it's misguided
- 9:35that they have been writing books over the past couple of
- 9:37years about the sin of empathy and how you can't really care
- 9:42about other people because that's a quote UN quote liberal
- 9:46thing to do. And that's how they get you as
- 9:48they get you to have compassion and empathy and then they do
- 9:52whatever they want. Jesus Christ looked out on
- 9:55sinful, evil people and Scripture says He had compassion
- 10:00on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.
- 10:04And if that was the mindset of our Savior, our mindset should
- 10:07be no different, that we look out on the world and we have
- 10:09compassion. We have compassion for the
- 10:11hurting. We have compassion for the poor,
- 10:13We have compassion for the broken and the needy because
- 10:16they are in need of the salvation and the love and the
- 10:21provision of God. And may we do our part to tell
- 10:25them about Jesus. May we do our part to care for
- 10:29them. However God blesses us to be
- 10:31able to. And don't, don't run from
- 10:34compassion. It's characteristic of God
- 10:37himself. So don't listen to don't listen
- 10:41to the people that are like empathy is a sin.
- 10:44Don't listen to those guys over 78.
- 10:47Let the arrogant be put to shame for slandering me with lies.
- 10:51I will meditate on your precepts, he says.
- 10:54God, other people, they're talking about me like let let
- 10:59them be put to shame. Let the way that I'm living the,
- 11:02the, the life that I'm leading, let it show that they're
- 11:05completely in the wrong and God, I'm going to spend my time not
- 11:09talking about them, not slandering them, not spreading
- 11:11lies about them. I'm going to spend my time on
- 11:14your word. Someone's talking about you.
- 11:16Let your life be the proof that they're wrong.
- 11:20Spend your time in the word of God.
- 11:21As you think about God's ways and how God deals with
- 11:24situations, let that be the truth.
- 11:27I think about how Jesus responded in first Peter 2.
- 11:30When Jesus was reviled, insulted, he did not insult
- 11:35back. When he was threatened, he
- 11:36didn't threaten them back, but instead he committed himself to
- 11:39him who judges righteously. May that be our response when
- 11:44people come against US. Verse 79 Let those who fear you,
- 11:50those who know your decrees, turn to me.
- 11:56Are you a safe haven for other Christians hear those that
- 12:01feared so the the parallel verse earlier that we looked at was
- 12:06those who fear you they see me and rejoice and here let those
- 12:12who fear you may they turn to me.
- 12:14Are you someone that can give biblical advice?
- 12:18You don't have to have a, you know, a counseling degree in
- 12:23order to give scriptural advice. Now, there's certainly a time in
- 12:27place for counselors. Our, our sin has twisted our
- 12:32world and it, it sometimes twists our minds in really
- 12:35messed up ways that we need to kind of like re rewire the way
- 12:39that we're thinking and re route some of those paths.
- 12:42And certainly good, good counseling can help in that,
- 12:46that we think rightly that we have some good categories that
- 12:51we think in, but but not every problem goes to the level of
- 12:58needing counseling. Many problems are people just
- 13:03need good advice. When someone's like man, my, you
- 13:06know, whatever relation is doing this and I just really want to
- 13:11whatever their solution is, well, we're able to respond, OK,
- 13:16you might need to take some steps as a result of this, but
- 13:20operate in love, operate in the kindness and the forgiveness of
- 13:24Jesus that you're not bearing ill will towards them, that the
- 13:29anger and animosity and a lack of forgiveness, that that's not
- 13:33ruling how you're interacting with the other person.
- 13:36Instead, the way of Jesus, his precepts, his decrees, his
- 13:39instruction, that's the way that you're living.
- 13:42Be someone that gives Bible advice.
- 13:46Don't just give religious advice.
- 13:48Don't just give some pastor's advice.
- 13:50Don't just give my advice. Give advice from the word of
- 13:54God. And that means you've got to be
- 13:55in it personally. But be someone like here, this
- 13:58psalmist, let those who fear you, those who know your
- 14:00decrees, turn to me. And then verse 80.
- 14:03This is the heart at the end of all of it.
- 14:05May my heart be blameless regarding your statutes so that
- 14:08I will not be put to shame. God, I want to walk with you so
- 14:13that I don't have to be ashamed for not being like my Savior.
- 14:18That I can say I'm a Christian and people go, yeah, that that
- 14:21makes sense. That's how that person lives.
- 14:23Instead of going that hypocrite, he says he follows Jesus, but
- 14:27look at what he says. Look at what he does.
- 14:30Look at what he spends his money on.
- 14:33That's nothing like Jesus. I don't want that to be the way
- 14:36that I live my life. I want to live blameless before
- 14:39my God. Well, thanks for tuning in this
- 14:43this particular section in someone 119 just had so many
- 14:47great little thoughts, and so I hope it was an encouragement to
- 14:49you today and that there was something that you were able to
- 14:51walk away with even for your week.
- 14:54Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode.
