- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 119. We made it. Lucas: We did. And today, we're going back to the night market. But this time, we're not just ordering snacks or drinks. Luna: Oh, what else is there? I thought the night market was all about food. Lucas: Food is a big part, for sure. But there are also stalls selling clothes, accessories, souvenirs. And you might want to buy something. Luna: Right. So we need to know how to ask about prices and say whether something is cheap or expensive. Lucas: Exactly. So today, we're going to learn four super useful phrases: 呢個幾多錢, 好平, 好貴, and 我要呢個. Luna: Okay, let's start with the first one. 呢個幾多錢. What does that mean? Lucas: 呢個 means 'this', and 幾多錢 means 'how much money'. So together, 'how much is this?' Luna: 呢個幾多錢. Can you say it slowly? Lucas: Sure. 呢個...幾多錢. 呢個幾多錢. Luna: 呢個幾多錢. 呢個幾多錢. I think I got it. Lucas: You did. Now, imagine you see a nice T-shirt at a stall. You point and say: 呢個幾多錢? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? And the seller tells you the price. Then you might think: oh, that's cheap, or that's expensive. Lucas: Right. So our next phrases: 好平 and 好貴. 好 means 'very', and 平 means 'cheap'. So 好平 is 'very cheap'. Luna: 好平. And 好貴 is 'very expensive'. Lucas: Exactly. So if you see a price you like, you can say: 好平. If it's too much, you say: 好貴. Luna: 好平. 好貴. Let me practice: 呢個幾多錢?... Oh, it's only twenty dollars. 好平! Lucas: Perfect. And if it's a hundred dollars for a keychain, you might say: 好貴. Luna: 好貴. Yeah, I'd probably walk away. Lucas: But if you decide to buy it, you say: 我要呢個. That means 'I want this'. Luna: 我要呢個. So after asking the price and deciding it's reasonable, I say 我要呢個. Lucas: Yes. Let's hear the whole exchange. You point to a wallet: 呢個幾多錢? Seller says: 'fifty dollars.' You say: 好平. 我要呢個. Luna: 呢個幾多錢? 好平. 我要呢個. I love it. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese, even just a few phrases sticking, it's because people like you support the show. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Yeah, it really does make a difference. Every little bit helps us keep making episodes. Lucas: Okay, back to the market. Let's try a little role play. I'll be the seller, you're the customer. You see a cool hat. Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: 三十蚊. Luna: 好平. 我要呢個. Lucas: See? You just bought a hat in Cantonese. Luna: That felt good. Okay, let me practice all four together. 呢個幾多錢? 好平. 好貴. 我要呢個. Lucas: You've got them. Now, 好平 and 好貴 are adjectives, so you can use them on their own. But remember, 好 can also mean 'good', so context matters. Luna: Right. In the market, it's 'very cheap' or 'very expensive'. Lucas: Exactly. So, let's do a quick recap. Repeat after me: 呢個幾多錢. Luna: 呢個幾多錢. Lucas: 好平. Luna: 好平. Lucas: 好貴. Luna: 好貴. Lucas: 我要呢個. Luna: 我要呢個. Lucas: Now, imagine you're at a night market with a friend. You see a beautiful scarf. What do you say? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Then if the price is good: 好平. 我要呢個. Lucas: And if it's too expensive? Luna: 好貴. Maybe I'll just look. Lucas: Exactly. So these four phrases are your basic toolkit for any market stall. Next time you're in Hong Kong, or even at a local Asian market, give them a try. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was really practical. Lucas: You're welcome. And remember, if you want to support us, buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every bit helps. Luna: Yeah, and we appreciate it. Alright, practice these phrases, and we'll see you next time. Lucas: Bye for now.
