- 0:16healing, identity, and the transformative power of nature.
- 0:20In this season, we're centering the voices of people who call
- 0:23Southern Oregon home. Outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor
- 0:27professionals whose lives have been shaped, changed, or are

- 1:19over there. OK, back to the show.
- 1:24This episode is brought to you by our friends at Roe
- 1:27Adventures. If you've ever.
- 1:29Dreamed about disappearing into a wild Canyon for a few days,
- 1:33rafting incredible rivers by day, and sitting around a
- 1:35Riverside campfire at night? This is your sign.
- 1:39Roe has been running unforgettable river expeditions

- 2:08adventures. Yep, see if I can get some.
- 2:24It's a little dark. We're about to go out into the
- 2:27sun. Yes, hello.
- 2:33OK, today on Go Wildly we are super excited to be joined and
- 2:40floating with Angie Braley. That's her.
- 2:44Angie is an anthropologist, a river guide, and a conservation
- 2:48professional whose work sits right at the confluence of
- 2:52people, rivers, and community. She works as a training
- 2:56specialist with the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals
- 3:01and runs Detour Consulting, where she helps organizations
- 3:05and communities build outdoor programs, steward rivers, and
- 3:09collaborate on conservation projects.
- 3:12Her connection to rivers runs deep, from guiding trips on Wild
- 3:17and Scenic rivers to supporting river protection efforts across
- 3:20the US and Latin America. Here in Southern Oregon, Angie
- 3:24also founded the Applegate Paddling Club, helping grow a
- 3:28local paddling community built around stewardship, education,
- 3:32and simply getting more people out on the water.
- 3:35Angie holds a master's degree in anthropology and sustainable
- 3:38development from Colorado State University, and her work has
- 3:42been recognized by groups like the National Geographic Society
- 3:46and the US Forest Service, including the 2024 Forest
- 3:50Service Award for Outstanding Support to the Wild and Scenic
- 3:53Rivers Program. And she lives here in Southern
- 3:56Oregon. What about us?
- 3:58These days, you'll find her based in Rouge, where?
- 4:01Usually somewhere near a river, chasing the next paddle,
- 4:04spending the time with her husband and their black lab, or
- 4:08on the hunt for the perfect Taco.
- 4:10We are, we are so excited to be joined by with Angie today.
- 4:14Both Heather and I know her privately in our personal lives,
- 4:19and we're going to be talking about Rivers Community and what
- 4:21it means to care for the places that connect us.
- 4:24Whoop, whoop, where are we at? We are just under the Highway
- 4:29199 bridge on the Applegate River, and we are going to be
- 4:33floating from here to through the confluence of the Applegate
- 4:37and the Rogue to White Horse Park on the Rogue River.
- 4:40So we're going to get two rivers one day.
- 4:43All with Angie, Yeah. Let's do it.
- 4:47We're going to be in three boats, three boats, two rivers
- 4:50one day. Two boats, three boats.
- 4:55Three boats. Three boats.
- 4:56Two rivers, Three people. Three people.
- 4:59OK, one day. Uno mas, let's go.
- 5:01All right. Why did I?
- 5:03I don't know. Well, I was going to put in my
- 5:06boat. Put your boat in the water and
- 5:08then hand you back the camera and I can help a little bit with
- 5:17my one hand. This is.
- 5:22Good. Oh.
- 5:24Well, Hard Rock. Hard Rock.
- 5:27Yeah, it's a good one. Maybe it'll.
- 5:29That's a good sign when you find it right away.
- 5:33Get in there. Oh yeah, get a.
- 5:35Pony in there, the water is cold.
- 5:37It's cold as fuck dude. Feels good.
- 5:40Yeah, I'm spicy today. She's a spicy enchilada.
- 5:47Heather's going paddling. Fuck.
- 5:50OK, well just hold it while I get my boat.
- 5:57This is going to be interesting, I'm not going to lie.
- 5:59This is going to be interesting in the beginning.
- 6:01OK, I actually might to get past this.
- 6:05I'm going to turn it off for a minute.
- 6:07OK, we'll catch you in just a moment.
- 6:08Show them what it is. Well, it's not that big of a
- 6:11deal, but it is when you're holding it.
- 6:13When you're on the camera, see. There's just a wait.
- 6:17No baby whitewater. OK, I'll be right back.
- 6:24Howdy friends, quick little pause on the adventure.
- 6:26First of all, we just want to say thank you.
- 6:29Truly. The fact that you're out there
- 6:30listening to this weird little outdoor podcast we started means
- 6:34more to us than you probably realize.
- 6:36We're just two little feral childhood besties that had an
- 6:39idea, grab some microphones and decided to record conversations
- 6:43in the wild. And somehow you showed up for
- 6:45it. Thank you.
- 6:46So if this podcast has ever made you laugh, taught you something,
- 6:50or kept you company on a drive, a hike, or a day at the river,
- 6:54we have one small favor to ask you.
- 6:56Give the show a follow, tap the stars and leave a review if you
- 7:00can. And also, here's a little fun
- 7:01exercise. Think of the first person who
- 7:04popped in your head while listening to this episode
- 7:06because let's be honest, everyone on podcasts, remind
- 7:09somebody of somebody or somebody you know that'll enjoy this
- 7:12podcast. Send this episode to them.
- 7:15That's honestly the best way this little wildly podcast
- 7:19grows. All right, thanks for being here
- 7:21with us. Now let's go wildly together.
- 7:25That'd. Be so fun.
- 7:27Yeah, buddy. Oh, this might be what's up.
- 7:31Are you going to get us together?
- 7:32I can get us together. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:34Do you have that little strap on you?
- 7:35I do. You have that little strap on?
- 7:40I do. Just a wit old guy, hope you
- 7:43don't mind. It's not the size, it's the
- 7:47motion, right? No, it's the size.
- 7:49Let's. Be honest.
- 7:52Oops, I just hit something when I hit.
- 7:54OK, I have another strap too if we need.
- 7:57Cool. Sweet, get a little moist.
- 8:07You want to be in the front or. In the middle, yeah.
- 8:10Yeah. Yeah, if I have this so I can
- 8:12get all of us chit chatting away, there we go.
- 8:17And I'm going to be the one without a pat.
- 8:19Like if I I can't really paddle. Well, then yeah, you should be
- 8:22in the middle. OK, we want to be 3 three ways,
- 8:27three side by side or end to end.
- 8:31Whatever's camera. I almost want to see if I can do
- 8:38one of these. This is the first time we're
- 8:46doing it like this, so we're just going to.
- 8:51Working it out. See.
- 8:52This. I can kind of get.
- 8:55Just you. Well, I'm trying to.
- 8:58This is longer than my arm could get though.
- 9:01True, but you can move it around when it's on your arm.
- 9:07I could do, I could go like this and then we could be look at.
- 9:15I couldn't see how it's shooting.
- 9:16Uh huh, Uh huh. Help me with that.
- 9:20Help me, mom. This is a fun new, fun new
- 9:25challenge. Works for would.
- 9:26It be better for me to go. There's water on it right here.
- 9:35I need GoPro for this. I mean most mostly we need Angie
- 9:42in the in the. Shots.
- 9:44So I was thinking if we could go, Angie should come right here
- 9:49on the other side of me and I should be on the like this and
- 9:53you she should be right here. OK, let's try that.
- 10:10Yeah, that'll be a little bit. I want to do 1.
- 10:14Oh yeah, could just be here through however, or I even have
- 10:18and then if you need to like. Quick release, yeah.
- 10:22Yeah, that'll be good actually, because then I'll, I don't have
- 10:24to do that. I can just do this.
- 10:28Yeah, yeah. Sweet.
- 10:30It'll work. I trust us.
- 10:32I'm just mostly going to get you anyway.
- 10:34Yeah, we don't need us. No, it's mostly about Angie.
- 10:38It's about Angie. Oh boy.
- 10:41So. Hotter.
- 10:41Spotlight on you, baby. OK, hold on.
- 10:44Let me. That was probably really fun. 6
- 10:47minutes this. Is going to be so cool the most
- 10:55most unique shoot we've ever done all right.
- 11:00Yes, that's actually some good POV.
- 11:02Yeah, Oh yeah. That is show the camera.
- 11:07Show the camera what we did. All right, I don't know if you
- 11:12can see it. OK, I could.
- 11:17Or I'll teach you how to splice that shit in.
- 11:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You'll need to.
- 11:20I'm going to trade you paddles so I have a longer reach.
- 11:23That's a good call. And you can do things.
- 11:27Skippy. Skippity.
- 11:29OK, Angie. Thanks.
- 11:32Yeah, finally, we've been trying to get Angie scheduled for since
- 11:39early in our first season. Angie was one of the very first
- 11:42people I reached out to and things just life just kept life
- 11:47in and. We're here now.
- 11:49We're here now. Meant to be.
- 11:52All right, Angie, Tell us who you are, where you came from and
- 11:55why you're here. Well, so I'm Angie Bailey.
- 12:05Let's see. I grew up moving around the
- 12:08West. My dad worked for a mining
- 12:11company and so we moved to small town.
- 12:14Small town in the in the West. What?
- 12:17Kind of mining. You know, he was an accountant
- 12:20for the mining companies. So a few different types of
- 12:23mines, but he wasn't like in the mines.
- 12:27And then ended up in Arizona for middle and high school.
- 12:33And I was really into soccer growing up.
- 12:37Didn't actually spend too much time like outdoors except for
- 12:41one. Of my butt is going to get
- 12:44bounced. Except for going camping with my
- 12:48family and we're through. Yes.
- 12:58But let's see. Soccer and camping.
- 13:02Soccer and camp and growing up and then when I went to college
- 13:05at Northern Arizona University I really started exploring the
- 13:09outdoors a bunch more. Did my first ever river trip
- 13:14with the NAU outdoors class, intro to multi day river guiding
- 13:19cool and did 9 days on the San Juan River.
- 13:23Wow. Which is pretty cool. 1st.
- 13:25River trip ever. Yeah.
- 13:27What? Was that like?
- 13:29It was awesome, except when I got done I was like, I don't
- 13:31know, this is kind of like hard. I don't know if I'd ever really
- 13:35want to be a guide, but I made a lot of friends who did river
- 13:38stuff. And so I thought, well, like,
- 13:42maybe I'll just keep doing private river trips.
- 13:46And then I pulled a Grand Canyon permit, one of my first ever
- 13:53permits that I pulled. And I was like, you know what, I
- 13:56should actually probably know a little bit more than I do for
- 13:59going down the Grand Canyon. And so I ended up going and
- 14:04being a raft guide and thought I was just going to do it for one
- 14:07summer. Just kind of learned the safety
- 14:09stuff, learned the ropes and ended up doing it for almost 10
- 14:13years. Wow it.
- 14:15Hooked you all with one company? No, it bounced around.
- 14:18Moved around, started in Utah on the Green River, cool.
- 14:24And then came out to the Rogue. Worked with a couple different
- 14:30companies on the Rogue as well. So, but yeah, that Grand Canyon
- 14:34trip, we're like just preparing for it was like kind of like a
- 14:39big moment in my life. Not only was I getting to go
- 14:41downriver with like a bunch of my best friends.
- 14:44And for a long amount of time. For a long we did 20-6 days in
- 14:48the Canyon and and so after that it was more just, I don't know,
- 14:55it was like the ball that or the motion that started with the
- 14:59ball rolling or however that saying goes.
- 15:02How many years were you in when we met down at Mariel?
- 15:06About 5. Five years in there.
- 15:08Cool. Just out of curiosity.
- 15:10Yeah. And I think we met pre pre river
- 15:14guide life. I think so.
- 15:16How long have we known each other?
- 15:19That's a good question. When did we make count that
- 15:24well? I met Anna in 2011.
- 15:29It was probably right around then.
- 15:31Yeah, well. Yeah, we've known each other a
- 15:35long time. I know, that's so cool and.
- 15:39Yeah, we've only done 1 river trip together before today.
- 15:42That is true. I know.
- 15:47We'll change that. Yes, we will.
- 15:48We will. Yeah.
- 15:50How did you find out about the Rogue?
- 15:52How did you make your way to Southern Oregon?
- 15:55So after I got done guiding my first season on the green, a
- 16:01bunch of the river guides were like, hey, one of us got a rogue
- 16:05permit and we just like finished packing up the warehouse and
- 16:08they're like, you want to go on the rogue.
- 16:09And I was like, sure, I've never been to Oregon and got out here.
- 16:13And I was like, wow, it's so green.
- 16:16Just kind of funny because it's even more green like Northern
- 16:20Oregon. But I thought it was awesome,
- 16:23fell in love with the area and still hadn't even gone on that
- 16:26Grand Canyon trip yet. OK, cool.
- 16:29And so came out here and did that river trip or the Rogue for
- 16:35my first time and then went back to the Grand Canyon and then
- 16:39right after that moved back to Oregon.
- 16:41And it was just like, it's just so much to do out here.
- 16:45So many rivers, the ocean, I don't know.
- 16:47It was, it was awesome. There's an abundance here, yes.
- 16:52It's the place to be. And then I tried to get like a
- 16:55real job life job somewhere in the area and I ended up working
- 17:03at the Department of Health and Human Services in Crescent City
- 17:07for about a year and a half. Wow.
- 17:09And then was like, I'm not made for a cubicle.
- 17:13Yeah. So wanted to get back outside
- 17:18and went back to to river gating after that.
- 17:22It's always there when you need it.
- 17:24So. And when you know what you're
- 17:26doing, they want you back. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:28And it was, that's when I started working on the Rogue as
- 17:33a guide then. So yeah, it was meant to be
- 17:39meant. To be, yeah, I love that.
- 17:42And I saw the fun spot for Crescent City, you know, after
- 17:46you lived there for a year and a half and make friends and to
- 17:52people in the community. So I still like to go out there.
- 17:54Yeah, I was going to say, now you got like somebody to stay
- 17:56with down at the coast. Right.
- 17:58That's always nice, yeah, have someone to do things with.
- 18:02And not that there's a lack of like, people around, but it's
- 18:06always just nice to have friends and places.
- 18:09You know, high places, low places, wet places.
- 18:13Dry. Places.
- 18:16All the places. All the places.
- 18:19Are your parents still in Arizona?
- 18:21My mom is, yeah, she still is in the Phoenix area, still go down
- 18:28and visit my brother. My nieces are down there as
- 18:30well. My dad passed away about 10
- 18:33years ago and so he's in South Dakota but.
- 18:42Yeah, it's cold there. Yeah, it is cold at times, Yeah.
- 18:50So yeah, it's, it's fun to go down there and visit to go down
- 18:55and did like a pretty cool paddle trip last time I was in
- 18:58Arizona on one of the lakes. Paddled out with some with a
- 19:02friend and camped for a couple of nights and explored like kind
- 19:05of like little slot canyons along the lake.
- 19:09So. Nau The the people that you got
- 19:13to then go and do the Grand Canyon trip with were those
- 19:16friends that you made through NAU or.
- 19:19Some of them. How do without like having river
- 19:22experience but then you get to go on a Grand Canyon trip with
- 19:24some of your best friends. Like how does that friendship
- 19:28collision start? Happen.
- 19:31You know, it was a combo of some friends I met through college,
- 19:35but a lot of them were actually friends that I met in high
- 19:37school. Cool.
- 19:38Yeah, have a pretty solid group of girlfriends.
- 19:42There's eleven of us that all graduated together and we all
- 19:46still adventure and hang out together.
- 19:50We do like a once a month Zoom call.
- 19:53So special. Yeah, it's a pretty special
- 19:56group of. Friends wow, I've always yearned
- 19:59for hell yeah connect like group connection like that.
- 20:04I've always felt like I have lots of friends in lots of
- 20:07different groups, but nothing that's really like.
- 20:10All of us are like the ride or die, Yeah crew.
- 20:16We're formulating. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:19It's building. Yeah.
- 20:20It's like finally in my 30s, like, hey, finding, finding the
- 20:25people. Right.
- 20:27Yeah. I've always, I've always admired
- 20:29that kind of group cohesion and but like you all have things in
- 20:34common and. Cherry things and interest,
- 20:36we're all so different too, you know, and that's what's kind of
- 20:39cool is we all celebrate each. Other's we go the right way
- 20:41guys. Differences.
- 20:43We will find out. Might get a little, we'll just
- 20:49narrow. Just can't win then.
- 20:57I think so. I think so.
- 21:01We're on an adventure. Oh my.
- 21:02God I thought that was a real dude on a.
- 21:04Horse So we found our horse people.
- 21:12Yeah, yeah. OK, I think we.
- 21:18Got it. I think we got it, yeah.
- 21:20Well, we traverse the river. I'll try to help you too, Emily.
- 21:30I keep trying. To move in there, we got it, We
- 21:34got it. We go over this little bit of a
- 21:37rock. Yeah.
- 21:44We probably should have done that Channel.
- 21:51We're by boating while I'm scenic, baby.
- 21:57With all the red equipment too well.
- 22:01That's the beauty of Southern Oregon.
- 22:02Sometimes you just don't need equipment.
- 22:06Like we have the know how. Yeah, we got it up here.
- 22:11Yeah. We have fine know how Heather
- 22:14has the anxiety. He's.
- 22:17Doing great. We got together.
- 22:19Heather's doing great. We're just going to go down
- 22:28this. For anybody who's listening just
- 22:31on a podcast app and not watching on YouTube or Spotify
- 22:36video, you sure are missing out on on the real footage here
- 22:42because we are paddling the river and it's a freaking
- 22:47gorgeous. Day.
- 22:47It's such a nice day. Just beautiful wow.
- 22:51For spacious skies, for amber waves, grain OK.
- 22:59How and why did you leave River Guiding?
- 23:03You know, it was a hard decision.
- 23:05I love it. I probably would do it forever.
- 23:07But it was starting to take a toll on my body, my wrists, my
- 23:11shoulders, and I determined that I wanted to be able to run
- 23:16rivers for all the rest of my years.
- 23:19And so maybe not doing it all day every single day of the
- 23:23summer would be a better way to to make sure I can't do that
- 23:28forever. And then also like, not going to
- 23:30lie, it's not easy to live on a river guide wage, right?
- 23:38Lucrative. So yeah, I was like, you know,
- 23:43what else could I do? I did some work kind of bopping
- 23:46around for different non profits locally, worked with like Siski
- 23:52Field Institute for a while. And then when COVID hit, it's
- 23:56kind of like, all right, everything's changing now.
- 23:59Now what I ended up getting a job with River Management
- 24:04Society, which is like a national organization helping do
- 24:08some river conservation and got to do it from working from home
- 24:11in the Applegate here. So that was pretty nice.
- 24:14And then after that, you know, I essentially just kind of kept
- 24:24finding opportunities to get into the current role I'm at,
- 24:29which is I'm part time with the Society of Outdoor Recreation
- 24:32Professionals or SORP. And then I also have kind of
- 24:36like my own consulting thing going on right now too, which
- 24:41wasn't necessarily something that I was like seeking to do.
- 24:44I just happened to be in like the right place at the right
- 24:46time. And people started being like,
- 24:49hey, we could use Someone Like You to help us out.
- 24:52And I'm like, hey. You can.
- 24:54What's that look like you're consulting?
- 24:57So it's it's kind of where whatever people need in a way as
- 25:05far as like helping with organizational or like company
- 25:13management, project management type stuff.
- 25:16So for any kind of company or just outdoor recreation
- 25:20companies. Outdoor rec.
- 25:21I've also got a client that does utility education outreach.
- 25:29It's kind of a unique thing. So like if you ever see like a
- 25:31brochure, like don't climb a power line, they produce that
- 25:36kind of information for power companies and then brand it for
- 25:39the power companies and their their own branding.
- 25:43That is very unique. Yeah, it's like that one, I just
- 25:46happened to be in San Francisco at a restaurant and someone was
- 25:50like, you know what, I could use Someone Like You for my company.
- 25:52And I was like, hey, well then call me.
- 25:54Yeah, you can use me. So yeah.
- 26:00And then I also do like marketing and like web stuff for
- 26:06the Global River Protection Coalition.
- 26:09That's kind of like a volunteer role right now, but really cool
- 26:15group of people from delegates from all over the country or the
- 26:18world representing different countries for river protections
- 26:25worldwide. And so help out with like, yeah,
- 26:29marketing, promotion of stuff, website stuff.
- 26:36Another little Really, there is a Little Rock.
- 26:38Right here. Oh, that's a big rock.
- 26:40We don't want to hit there. We missed that wee.
- 26:51Wee that looks like an old boat. Oh yeah.
- 26:58Oh, just saw fish jump. Oh, apparently there's ton in
- 27:02here right now. Good, it's not a guy.
- 27:05If that guy asks us again, we can say we caught 1 fish with
- 27:09our eyes. Just are you doing stuff?
- 27:19Some mushroom things. I was doing like growing gourmet
- 27:24mushrooms for farmers markets, which is really cool you.
- 27:28Still doing that work. Not anymore really.
- 27:31I just found out that like I am a puzzled person.
- 27:35I like, I like to solve problems.
- 27:38And it was a little too like mundane for me.
- 27:42It was kind of the same thing every day, the same formula
- 27:46stuff. And once I had kind of cracked
- 27:49that, I was like, hey, what's next, you know?
- 27:53I get like that too. Also, a lot of people, it's kind
- 27:57of an interesting thing is like there's a lot of research out
- 28:00there around how anywhere that was a former British colony
- 28:04tends to be very micophobic or scared of mushrooms as a culture
- 28:08really. And.
- 28:09What's the correlation there? You know, it's kind of just like
- 28:13around this notion of toadstools and like, yeah.
- 28:19Lucinogens. Not just like that, they'll
- 28:22poison you, except a lot of like former British, like the United
- 28:26States, like people tend to be like who don't touch that.
- 28:30That can make you sick. And you can't actually get sick
- 28:33from a mushroom by just touching it.
- 28:36But when I was trying to sell mushrooms at the farmers
- 28:40markets, I would probably like sell 110th of like how many
- 28:47people took photos of them. Oh, people were like, oh, those
- 28:49are beautiful. But I don't eat them or I won't
- 28:51touch them or I just don't like them, you know?
- 28:53And so it's, it's odd. I was like, man, I should just
- 28:56do like $5 for a photo but. That is a little odd.
- 29:04Yeah, I'm. Really curious about that, I've
- 29:05never heard that and I want to know more.
- 29:07About that, I know it's a different flavour, like it's,
- 29:10you know, I love the flavour of mushrooms.
- 29:12Yeah, I don't know why, but. I get to.
- 29:15Yeah, flavour, texture, there's so much variety there.
- 29:20And now easily grown, easily foraged, really good for your
- 29:23health and your brain and your digestion and like your kind of
- 29:29a super food. I think that they're gaining
- 29:31more popularity right now because of all those extra like
- 29:34benefits and stuff too. But what was your favorite
- 29:38mushroom to grow? I like your favorite to eat,
- 29:42maybe that. Namiko's are one of my favorite.
- 29:45They're kind of like smaller brown and they have like a
- 29:47really nutty flavour to them. And if you saute them up with
- 29:51some butter and like slivered almonds, they're even nuttier
- 29:55and really good. Yeah, that's not a great, but
- 29:58really any, any kind of type of. Good.
- 30:00Yeah, any kind. It's really good.
- 30:03All mushrooms win. I want to know more about SORP.
- 30:08Yeah. Especially because both, as we
- 30:11talked about in the car, Heather and I are both in like outdoor.
- 30:15Well, the podcast is essentially about outdoor recreation and
- 30:20outdoor recreation professionals.
- 30:22And we both have avenues in our life directing us towards even
- 30:27furthering our outdoor recreation professionalism.
- 30:30So tell us about this society that we could maybe be part of.
- 30:34Yeah. So it's a member based
- 30:36organization that is nationwide and the real purpose of it is to
- 30:43support people who plan, manage, who plan and manage outdoor
- 30:50recreation and also like help balance like outdoor recreation
- 30:57with protecting natural and cultural resources well.
- 30:59Hell yeah. So like, I don't know, that's
- 31:02like a bunch of like big dragony words, but I like to think of
- 31:05like, do you think about like all like like a crowded National
- 31:13Park, you know, and trying to help the people who manage the
- 31:16National Park figure out like maybe we should, let's see,
- 31:25maybe it's like really crowded during certain times of the
- 31:28year. Are there ways that we can
- 31:30disperse the crowds? Usually they say through like
- 31:34engineering, education or enforcement, but that's usually
- 31:39like the last one that you want to get to.
- 31:41And so it's kind of just that's like 1 aspect.
- 31:47We also deal with. I do like, coordinate trainings
- 31:51around how welcoming and inclusive and outdoor space
- 31:55might be from like everything to like, is there a graffiti all
- 32:03over? Or like, is the trail wide
- 32:07enough for a person who, yeah, uses an adaptive bike to go, you
- 32:12know, is there a gate that's blocking clean bathrooms?
- 32:17Yep. So a lot of the people that I
- 32:20work with are staff of the Forest Service or the Park
- 32:25Service, also like State Park agencies, local agencies, kind
- 32:33of all different levels and trying to, yeah, provide support
- 32:39and training however I can as the training specialist.
- 32:43We also have like communities of practice for people who are
- 32:46trying to deal with similar issues.
- 32:48We also provide, like, all sorts of library and resources.
- 32:54We've got our own podcast called Planning the Wild in the studio.
- 33:01It's indoors, indoors, indoors. Yeah.
- 33:05So nothing. Wrong with that.
- 33:06No. And so it's a really cool job.
- 33:09I get to like meet people all over the country or doing
- 33:11outdoor recreation and like have some really innovative ideas for
- 33:16how to continue to provide access to these opportunities
- 33:21while also, like I said, like not destroying the environment.
- 33:25Not over developing destroy. Yeah, yeah, Than anything being
- 33:29like stewards of it and you know, like for taking good care
- 33:33of it. Yeah, keeping it littering clean
- 33:36and not bought out by big pharma or.
- 33:41Great. Selling off public lands.
- 33:45We're going left. OK, Yeah.
- 33:48Yeah, there's no getting right. You know, not at this point.
- 33:51Not at this point. Not without a lot of back
- 33:52paddling. But yeah, it's cool.
- 33:58It's, you know, it's funny because I never, when I was
- 34:03growing up, I never knew that being like a recreation planner
- 34:07was a job that you did have, right.
- 34:10And so, like, wish that, you know, we knew more about it and,
- 34:15like, back you up, Heather. We do have a couple rocks in
- 34:19there. There are a.
- 34:20Couple rocks, Yeah, not a bad idea.
- 34:26Oh, like this one right in the middle?
- 34:27Yeah. Oh.
- 34:32Oh, fuck. Oh, good.
- 34:34You got it. You got it.
- 34:37Yeah. Heather.
- 34:38Yeah, yeah. Sorry guys, I got none of that
- 34:46because there is a big. Rock.
- 34:48Yeah. But.
- 34:52I got 1. Don't keep your.
- 34:56Eyes off the prize, first dog. That's a little rocky, not going
- 35:06to lie. I think I lost one of the little
- 35:09one of the little straps. No, I got it.
- 35:12I was going to grab you and it's pull you backwards.
- 35:16I got a strap. Well, there were there were two.
- 35:19I think there might only be one now unless you grab the little
- 35:21little one. That's fine, I got another one
- 35:24too. OK.
- 35:26Sacrifice to the river gods, that was that was smart to a.
- 35:30Good call bro. Yeah, I would have went right
- 35:34over and off and the the camera was like this.
- 35:39Yeah, I was trying to keep it so I didn't go in the drink and
- 35:45there is some water we might need to rice this bad boy when
- 35:47we get. Sorry guys.
- 35:53So Applegate might not be good. Well, maybe just a bigger boat.
- 36:01Could a bigger boat make it? Yeah, what about like, we could
- 36:04all fit, We could all like. In a little cat got.
- 36:06All cute together on one of my little cats.
- 36:09OK. I'll let you guys stay together
- 36:14there. Well, that was fun.
- 36:15Where were we? It was.
- 36:15Super fun. Let's see.
- 36:19Yeah, SARP. That sounds cool.
- 36:21Yeah, SARP. Yeah, it's cool.
- 36:23It's cool organization doing some really cool, some really
- 36:28cool work to support outdoor professionals.
- 36:31Like I was saying, like a recreation planner.
- 36:33I didn't even know that you could have that job right and.
- 36:35Like what is? What is that like?
- 36:38So a lot of agencies have like, for example, especially the
- 36:42federal Land Management agencies like the Forest Service and the
- 36:46Bureau of Land Management Park Service, they have jobs where
- 36:50you're a recreation planner and so you work maybe like in a
- 36:57forest unit where you're not only like helping figure out
- 37:03where do we put the trash cans, but the trails, What does the
- 37:05parking look like? Is it a river stretch?
- 37:09Do we need to put in river access?
- 37:10What does that look like? Are we going to permit it?
- 37:12Are we not finding out? What are the activities that are
- 37:16going to happen here and how do people use it and access it and
- 37:21also thinking about like. Things that don't even exist yet
- 37:25because a lot of times they'll like write plans that are than
- 37:28in place for 10 years. It was actually just at this
- 37:33conference and someone had a robot dog and was posing the
- 37:37question like, should robot dogs be allowed on sidewalks?
- 37:43And kind of just getting to this whole idea of like, there's
- 37:46things that we haven't even thought of yet or like drones
- 37:49that can carry people through a Canyon, you know, like oof,
- 37:53like, you know, and the. Presence of drones in general.
- 37:56Right. That's been a big change, yeah,
- 37:58in the last 10 years. So it's people thinking about
- 38:03that and then, yeah, you're like helping plan recreation
- 38:09opportunities and provide access to them and things like that.
- 38:12So it's not necessarily like being a guide and taking people
- 38:16downriver, but it's a lot of times the people who manage the
- 38:19trails or the climbing areas or the rivers or wherever you're
- 38:26at. That's really interesting, yeah.
- 38:30It makes sense that that would be a thing though, yeah.
- 38:33You know, because like you do need some logistics around if
- 38:37things start to get packed and how how do you make manage the
- 38:39flow of things. So that makes sense for like in
- 38:43big parks and big. National and even small parks
- 38:47like how do we bring more people to an area that is essentially
- 38:52underutilized, right? That is an established space for
- 38:56recreation, but people either aren't using it for the assumed
- 39:00recreation activities or just aren't using it at all.
- 39:04How do we make these spaces more inviting, accessible, enticing
- 39:09like? The fly fishing pond, Yeah,
- 39:12stupid fly fishing pond. And everybody wants it to be a
- 39:17pump Jack. We're getting a pump track
- 39:19people, don't worry. That's been the.
- 39:22Our local our. Local drama city.
- 39:25Of grand past drama. Yeah, yeah, Like how do we, how
- 39:30do we get people excited to recreate?
- 39:33Right, you know, and I think there's like definitely like a
- 39:43culture around it. And I would say sometimes the
- 39:45outdoorsy culture hasn't always been the most inclusive culture.
- 39:49You know, there's kind of like barriers to entry to like buy
- 39:51gear and like have the know how they're not being raised in a
- 39:56family who did it or something like that.
- 39:59And so I think there's a lot of work being done too to also kind
- 40:06of change that, especially like. Yeah, like I, I don't know, like
- 40:19diversifying whitewater, diversify whitewater.
- 40:22Great group that's doing stuff to get all different types of
- 40:26people out on the water or there's similar things going on
- 40:30in snow sports. You know, it's, I think that's
- 40:35part of it is like getting more people out recreating.
- 40:38Also like the way that our recreation areas have been set
- 40:42up. Like for example, a lot of the
- 40:47design that came out of the 1960s was for like the family
- 40:51that's going to go on a road trip across the country.
- 40:54But not all families are just like 4 people, you know?
- 40:58And so there's some research out there, like a lot of Latinos
- 41:04that are outside in the parks are often there with like multi
- 41:08generational families. And it wouldn't it be cool if
- 41:11the picnic tables all moved so that they could like, have them
- 41:13next to each other instead of like one over here and one over
- 41:16there. And so starting to think about
- 41:17like how we're not only like designing these spaces, but ways
- 41:23to just make them more adaptable for people to know some.
- 41:28That's so important. Yeah.
- 41:31Yeah. To arrive to a space and say, Oh
- 41:33yeah, we can, we can be here. That it's not already
- 41:37restrictive just by like prior planning or absent mindedness.
- 41:43It's not considering the breadth of people that want to have
- 41:47access to a space. Yep, totally.
- 41:49But how do we like all these things, all these adaptations
- 41:53and all these corrections of the past cost money, right?
- 41:57And they require people to to have that broad thinking and
- 42:04experience and insight. Where do we, where do, how do
- 42:09we, where do we get that? That's a good question.
- 42:14How do we? How do we?
- 42:15Reach these. Kids, it sounds like it's like a
- 42:18cohort, right? Like just groups of people
- 42:20getting together to, you know, start the conversation and then
- 42:24take the first actionable steps. Yeah, and.
- 42:28Keeps that I don't know. Keep the conversation going.
- 42:31Communities of like practice, like there's often times where
- 42:33I'll get together with other people who are doing similar
- 42:35work, but maybe like in Vermont or Colorado, you're like, hey,
- 42:39this is what's working here. Or even like outside of your
- 42:45like discipline or your sport or your recreation topics.
- 42:50So for example, with the Applegate Paddling Club, I've
- 42:56been like taking some ideas from the Rogue Valley hang glider and
- 43:01paraglider association. They did something really cool
- 43:05with like different. I want to say it was like flags.
- 43:09Don't quote me on this, where they had these flags available
- 43:15for local property owners to put up in their yard is like, yes,
- 43:18this is like an emergency land spot.
- 43:20You're welcome to land here. Do.
- 43:22You want me to do you want me to take the camera?
- 43:24Do you feel more comfortable? Yeah, I'll stick it in my life
- 43:26jacket. OK, OK.
- 43:28Wait, we might pause for a moment, guys.
- 43:30This is the last one. This is the confluence OK, I
- 43:35think. Hopefully.
- 43:37Did we go by the big Eddie? No, not yet.
- 43:40OK, then maybe this. I feel like this has got to be
- 43:43the confluence. Oh.
- 43:48Did I do it? Shit.
- 44:04OK, yeah, rocks. See that I We just need to get
- 44:09around the fucking. Rocks.
- 44:13You're good. This is Emily's.
- 44:20POV. I got another POV on me.
- 44:27Hell to the yeah. This is what's up.
- 44:50You fucker. I just got so wet my face.
- 45:07That was awesome. That was cool.
- 45:09I can get it. Angie's just canoeing back
- 45:12there. Well, that was not the
- 45:18confidence. Obviously I know where I am.
- 45:22I know what I'm doing. This is a good angle, yeah.
- 45:30Angle of the dangle. This is actually really fun.
- 45:34I wish we were like having to manage the camera equipment
- 45:39because I want to come back. And do this stretch.
- 45:42Yeah, just for fun too. Cool spot.
- 45:47Sounds like there might be another corner.
- 45:55I mean, this is when we first came up with the concept of this
- 45:59podcast. This was a big part of what we
- 46:02saw ourselves doing, yes, Going out on an adventure with someone
- 46:07and feeling good experience and taking people on an immersive
- 46:13outdoor. That's right.
- 46:15Adventure, yeah. Paddle with us.
- 46:24Just a whittle. Something I think this one is
- 46:26there's like some bedrock like shallow.
- 46:28Shallow. Rock that makes it sound.
- 46:31Yeah. Sound a little bit more violent
- 46:33than it is. Not that it's like too sharp,
- 46:37but like, I don't know, I just was trying to manage that
- 46:41camera. Yeah.
- 46:42Oh yeah, totally. And then also like while I am on
- 46:49the river, not as much as I'm sure you guys.
- 46:52You're right, right. It's like, I know how to ride a
- 46:56bike, but I'm not doing this kind of baking I'm sure that
- 47:00you're doing. So you once again, if you're
- 47:14only listening on on a podcast app and you're not watching the
- 47:19video that we are filming while we go on, there's a big.
- 47:23Rocker here and right here. You are missing out.
- 47:26Oh my God. Yeah.
- 47:35We are taking the. Waves.
- 47:52There's another one up here, guys.
- 47:55What's that? I mean, I'm going to take this
- 48:02way. Did the Applegate see some good
- 48:21high water? Couple weeks ago, yeah.
- 48:24Oh yeah, it did. It got up to 3000 CFS down here.
- 48:29OK. It's about 300 today.
- 48:54Oh my gosh, that was, that was funny.
- 48:58I'm glad I took that way. Yeah, it was a little crazier, a
- 49:02little extra. Spicy over there.
- 49:04It was a. Little spicy for.
- 49:05Sure. Well, thanks for tuning in, you
- 49:13guys. This is the Go Wildly podcast,
- 49:16going through active Rapids and not being together to chit chat.
- 49:22So I thought I'd put in a little break, ski right here and say,
- 49:25are you subscribed to the podcast?
- 49:28Have you given this episode 5 stars?
- 49:33I mean, if you want to, you can give it five stars.
- 49:35If you don't, then that's your own prerogative.
- 49:37We can still be friends. I'm friends with everybody and
- 49:41share this with a friend. Yes, Share this podcast with a.
- 49:46Friend. That's how this little fun
- 49:50passion project pod grows is if you share it with a homie.
- 49:55So do that. Give us likes, give us comments,
- 49:57follow us on Instagram. If you haven't done that yet.
- 50:00We do some really fun behind the scenes stuff there and yeah, I
- 50:06think we're getting ready to glom up together again and chat
- 50:11more with Angie. Whose?
- 50:12Castle. Is that up there?
- 50:14Right it. Looks like the Getty Museum.
- 50:20That is a that looks like an earthship kinda.
- 50:25It's a little out of the ground, it looks like.
- 50:28It looks a little. Out of the ground, but like that
- 50:30is a wow, that's a that's quite the.
- 50:35I know when I go down the Applegate, I'm always like, oh,
- 50:37look at that person's porch. Look at that house.
- 50:41That's how I feel like when I'm floating the Deschutes up by
- 50:44Lapine, like Lapine State Park. It's such a fun booze cruise.
- 50:48But like it is, it's booze cruising and you're like, that
- 50:52would be sick. That would be sick.
- 50:54Like, did you just die? No.
- 50:57I heard it go put it in. Oh, did you have it turned off?
- 50:59No, you heard that in your head. Wow.
- 51:03Here's a bird. It is a bird.
- 51:06Bird. Yeah, maybe it was the bird
- 51:09anyway, yeah, I love paddle boarding the chutes for that
- 51:12Yeah, it's really fun, really a fun day.
- 51:16I remember I took my took cruise, cruise was like 4-3 or
- 51:21four years old and I had him strapped to the back of my stand
- 51:27up paddle board in a tube like a so tar mesh bottom tube.
- 51:31And he was just passed out the whole time like this.
- 51:34And he doesn't sunburn thankfully.
- 51:36So he didn't get sunburned, but I of course got sunburned.
- 51:39Anyway. It was just a really fun time
- 51:40and Sean got the shits so that he was not with us.
- 51:44I had to do it with his family. And yeah, so the in laws and
- 51:48myself and my and crews passed out in the so tar tube.
- 51:52Fun. It was a fun little day.
- 51:54Story. Adventure.
- 51:56Anyways, tell me more about this taking a play out of the
- 52:00paragliding. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:02So they have like these, like these flags that property owners
- 52:07can get. And it's like, you can use this
- 52:09as like an emergency landing zone.
- 52:11Oh, cool. Or absolutely under no
- 52:14circumstances do not land here, you know, 'cause there are
- 52:20people who don't want people trespassing.
- 52:23Yeah, like marijuana farmers. And so I was like, that's a cool
- 52:29idea. I wonder, you know, like with
- 52:31the paddling club, we've tried to make it so that we're not
- 52:35doing like giant group outings just to be respectful of
- 52:40property owners and encourage people to go in smaller groups
- 52:45and to be aware of like where they're at.
- 52:47Because there's a lot of private property on the Applegate River.
- 52:50And so almost having like a, like a little yard sign that
- 52:53people can get. And because I've had a lot of
- 52:55people reach out and say, hey, if there's an emergency, I want
- 52:58someone to feel safe that they can come up and like use the
- 53:01phone to call for help or. That's rad, girl.
- 53:04Yeah. And so I was like, hey, good
- 53:06idea, paragliders. And so yeah, using ideas from
- 53:12other people, you don't always have to create.
- 53:14The wheel right our battery blue Heron hold on, I'm going to do a
- 53:20batteries. OK.
- 53:21Q. Dramatic.
- 53:22Cut here. This episode is brought to you
- 53:25by Dead Camera Batteries. May we always have a few more in
- 53:29our backpacks. Enjoy.
- 53:32Howdy y'all, it's Heather. This episode of the Go Wildly
- 53:35podcast is also supported by Roe Adventures.
- 53:39Imagine spending days floating through remote wildernesses,
- 53:42hiking side canyons, eating incredible meals on a sandy
- 53:46beach, and sleeping under a sky full of stars.
- 53:49No cell service, just the river and the people you're sharing it
- 53:53with. It's the dream, baby.
- 53:55That's what a multi day trip with Roe is all about.
- 53:59Go Wildly listeners can get $100 off any multi day a river trip
- 54:03in 2026 or 2027 when you use the code Go wildly.
- 54:09All one word all caps baby. Do it.
- 54:11OK, book your trip and go wildly with row adventures.
- 54:16Lots of light and I was like what the fuck?
- 54:19And then I still. Like pitch black in the morning.
- 54:22Till 7:30 and then people on the old ticky tacky say they're
- 54:26like, what's that? Has anybody noticed?
- 54:28It's like we didn't just gain an hour, we gained like an hour and
- 54:32a half. Two hours and it's like 8:00.
- 54:34Still sunny already. And it's March.
- 54:37And or light and it's yeah. And I was like, actually.
- 54:39What does it mean? Yeah, they just time is a
- 54:44construct, they just constructed it.
- 54:47I mean, it really is. I thought that Oregon voted to
- 54:49get rid of daylight savings time.
- 54:52I can't do what I did. Everybody.
- 54:53Yeah. Well, no, what I understand is
- 54:55that it has to be like regional other than Arizona doesn't
- 54:59follow daylight savings time. So they they must have done it
- 55:02before it became some, yeah, other institution.
- 55:06There's your bird, Heather. But Oregon, Washington and
- 55:12California have to all agree with it.
- 55:15There's two baldies. Two baldies or a baldy and an
- 55:19osprey? Might be Osprey no?
- 55:26The majestic ball where your. Camera can zoom in that far.
- 55:30It's just beautiful blue sky out there.
- 55:31The majestic ball eagle. The Haleidas.
- 55:35Look Esophilus. Yeah, I think Oregon,
- 55:43Washington, California all have to agree to do away with
- 55:46daylight savings time and then the whole like Pacific Standard
- 55:51Time. We'll just we'll be standardized
- 55:54What? Time is it.
- 55:56It's 3/13. Oh, OK, well, let's paddle on
- 55:59all right. Yeah, let's do it.
- 56:00I'm glad you got to back up. Glad you got to back up.
- 56:05But. Still, Yep.
- 56:10All right, Angie, tell us some crazy stories.
- 56:12Yeah, easy stories. Yeah.
- 56:17You know, Wildcat stories. I don't know have something
- 56:24spark it? Any bad flips and rescues?
- 56:38Yeah. Are you comfortable telling us
- 56:40about one particular? Yeah, I'm happy.
- 56:43Well, we're probably not happy about it, but.
- 56:45Happy to chat about it. I am very open with the my
- 56:50experiences of being on the river and seeing all sorts of
- 56:54stuff. I assume you're referring to
- 56:59Wildcat Rapid, yeah. Oh, I did say Wildcat, but I had
- 57:03no idea there was a actual yeah situation that went down.
- 57:07Yeah, about 10 years ago. Gosh. 10 years ago?
- 57:12I think so. Whoa, time.
- 57:16Commercial train. By Yeah.
- 57:19Wow, a fatality on the river, which was really sad, right?
- 57:26Really sad it was. Was this was was this did you
- 57:30guys get flighted out of? No, this has wasn't you guys.
- 57:34No. There was one while I was
- 57:36working at Mariel and the that came down at the lodge, or not
- 57:40in the lodge, but the ranch. OK, anyway, no, we ended up
- 57:44taking out at a black bar. Oh, that night the person was in
- 57:51an inflatable kayak and just kind of went up into the rock
- 57:55jumble in the middle of Wildcat and flipped and got stuck there.
- 58:01Took a couple different rescue trips going back to get them
- 58:06out. Like full trips?
- 58:10There's some people who went back the next day and we're not
- 58:14able to get him either with the gear or the circumstances.
- 58:18And then another group went out a couple days after that and I
- 58:24joined them on that. It was, I wanted to be there.
- 58:31It's kind of like to bring some closure because you were the
- 58:34trip leader on that. I was the trip leader and you
- 58:39know, it was, it was just like unfortunate.
- 58:41I don't know if there was anything that I could have done
- 58:43differently. When the person's in their own
- 58:46craft, you know, there's a little bit of risk and
- 58:49responsibility that you know, and you know, I say that the
- 58:53river doesn't care how good you think you are.
- 58:57The river can. I've seen the most experienced
- 58:59people have accidents on the river too.
- 59:02So sometimes shit happens, right since then, you know, it was
- 59:08really important to me to get back on the water.
- 59:10And luckily I've got a great community of friends and I was
- 59:15actually able to get out pretty much almost the next day.
- 59:19Went and did a stretch on the upper Klamath, the caldera
- 59:24stretch. And that was more just like I
- 59:27needed to get my nerves out and needed to get back on the water.
- 59:30I still have like a very healthy respect for water and probably
- 59:34take the the dry line more than some people do, but.
- 59:40We hear that a lot out of guides, actually.
- 59:42Yeah, they don't go too ham. And when you see you seen your
- 59:46fair share of stuff, you know, it's like, I don't want to ruin
- 59:49everyone else's time on the river too, by just doing
- 59:54something to be good Ego. And you want to be able to keep.
- 59:57Doing it. Yeah, exactly.
- 59:59Keep. Doing it.
- 1:00:00Yeah. So what's like protocol when
- 1:00:04something that crazy happens? Like so you guys obviously the
- 1:00:08whole trip took out and drove back.
- 1:00:11It was a small group so there was only 5 guests on the trip
- 1:00:15and they all knew each other so it was just knew the the
- 1:00:20deceased so it was just the right decision to make.
- 1:00:26Do you have any training around like consoling people, like the
- 1:00:31shock of it or like is how? I would say at the time like a
- 1:00:37wilderness first responder did not deal as much with
- 1:00:41psychological first aid. It is being more incorporated
- 1:00:45into things and there's like actually great training courses
- 1:00:48online. The Responder Alliance is one
- 1:00:50that offers webinars and all sorts of resources and support,
- 1:00:56especially for people who do like search and rescue or like
- 1:00:59ski patrol. Folks, this big one.
- 1:01:01That when I took my wilderness first aid course two years ago,
- 1:01:04there was a whole component on the psychological and the social
- 1:01:08and the welfare of people. And when we were doing
- 1:01:13scenarios, somebody was always assigned to just go talk to the
- 1:01:16person. Yep, keep them calm.
- 1:01:18And then also like go talk to the other people.
- 1:01:21There's just like social energy management as well as. 1st.
- 1:01:26Aid cuts and bruises and brakes. That's exactly it.
- 1:01:31And you know, like the effects of like witnessing something
- 1:01:34like that can have long lasting scars too.
- 1:01:38So it's like really important that everyone seek support and
- 1:01:43assistance as if, you know, as needed.
- 1:01:45And yeah, I would say like when that happened, one of the first
- 1:01:52things that we did was like, we got to make sure the group is
- 1:01:54OK. Like after we realized, you
- 1:01:56know, it had moved from like a rescue to a recovery, Let's
- 1:02:02like, I'll pause. Let's like make sure we're all
- 1:02:04OK, the group's OK and, and take care of that, you know, take
- 1:02:10care of those of us that are still around and make sure the
- 1:02:12group's good at that point. It's like not about like rushing
- 1:02:15to them, right? It's about making smart
- 1:02:16decisions and and not rash decisions just because of the
- 1:02:21emotions that come with being in a situation like.
- 1:02:24That Dang did you seek therapy or did the.
- 1:02:28Company provide, company provided who paid for
- 1:02:32counseling. So I did go yeah.
- 1:02:34And that was it was good. I'm everyone should go.
- 1:02:39Regardless of a traumatic reverse situation, therapy is
- 1:02:43good. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:45Yeah, we had a the theme today has been mental health, it
- 1:02:49seems, and being proactive in mental health and stuff, so.
- 1:02:54Super important and like. This isn't This isn't the
- 1:02:58confluence. Nope, Nope, it's.
- 1:03:03Just around the Riverbend. I've been taking that.
- 1:03:05Little time. Seems yeah, seems like there
- 1:03:09should be a map of this river, right?
- 1:03:12Woo Hoo should do that. Oh yeah, so.
- 1:03:16Like way to it's been. Like, I just started as like a
- 1:03:19fun project. When I moved to the Applegate
- 1:03:22Valley, I was like, OK, you know, there's a river right
- 1:03:24here. I started going down it and was
- 1:03:27like, oh, does anyone else know anything about this river?
- 1:03:31And some found a few people who did, you know, there wasn't
- 1:03:35really a lot of information out there.
- 1:03:38And so I just thought for myself, it'd be fun to like, put
- 1:03:40together like a little Applegate paddling map of the different
- 1:03:43river access points. Again, there's so much private
- 1:03:49land that it's nice to like not be trespassing and then so I've
- 1:03:56come out with like a version one online that's
- 1:03:58applegatepaddlingclub.org. You can just Scroll down and see
- 1:04:02it little. Strainer over there on the left.
- 1:04:13Hold please. Another break.
- 1:04:15Are you subscribed to the pod? If you aren't, hit that follow
- 1:04:19button. Hell yeah brother.
- 1:04:25Like Dang, I need to just fill the fill our last time when
- 1:04:30we're not all together. But I'm now working on a version
- 1:04:34two of the map that's going to be a little bit better than just
- 1:04:37like a colorful squiggly line. That's awesome.
- 1:04:42So that will be coming out. Hopefully I'm going to have it
- 1:04:46ready to distribute like in May I received a small grant from a
- 1:04:53greater Applegate to pay for printing of it and distribute it
- 1:04:58out at different places. It'll also be available online
- 1:05:00for download. Not trying to like make any
- 1:05:03money off of it, I'm just trying to share information and, you
- 1:05:07know, provide opportunities, help educate people so that
- 1:05:13they're not trespassing. Right.
- 1:05:15And the barriers to entry, yeah, get out.
- 1:05:18So. And the Applegate, I mean it's
- 1:05:19got, it's not like quite the inner tube river that people
- 1:05:22think it is. I would say almost every stretch
- 1:05:25has some Rapids and some are pretty big depending on the
- 1:05:28water flow and stuff. And so I see a lot of people
- 1:05:32trying to inner tube and who get in trouble, maybe they're not
- 1:05:35wearing a life jacket or PFD or something.
- 1:05:37And so also just helping people understand.
- 1:05:41More awareness. Yeah, what they're getting into.
- 1:05:43Well, I tell Emily all the time, I'm like, I'm like, have you
- 1:05:46floated the Applegate? The first time I did the fish
- 1:05:48hatchery to the bridge, the 199 bridge, I was like Oh my God, a
- 1:05:52whole new world of floating has opened up for me.
- 1:05:55Like I felt like I was in a different area.
- 1:05:58Totally. Not my backyard, and it was
- 1:06:01really awesome to get another taste of what our beautiful
- 1:06:05region has. It was really awesome.
- 1:06:09That stretch too, it's almost like got like big vines and like
- 1:06:13I felt like I was in like Florida or Georgia or something.
- 1:06:20Yeah, really cool. Like really a nice something
- 1:06:26new, you know? Just, you know, our own backyard
- 1:06:29there, but. Right, Yeah, when I was like,
- 1:06:31oh, there's so many like river people in the Rogue Valley just
- 1:06:34because of. The Rogue.
- 1:06:36People come to guide fishing or rafting and then they stay here.
- 1:06:41And so I always have many rivers, right?
- 1:06:45And there's so many rivers. And so that's kind of how the
- 1:06:48paddling club was formed, was just like, oh people, you want
- 1:06:51to go like boating, let's go boating.
- 1:06:54We got a river like right here in our backyard, like that's 5
- 1:06:58minutes from my house to get there.
- 1:07:00Or I can drive an hour and get to the Rogue or something.
- 1:07:02But. Yeah, that's not like
- 1:07:04commercialized and you're not going to see many folk on the
- 1:07:08river, maybe more in the summer through that more wreck stretch,
- 1:07:12but. Does the paddling club gather on
- 1:07:15a regular basis? How does how do events
- 1:07:18activities get organized and how could somebody get?
- 1:07:22Connected. Involved, get involved.
- 1:07:24So all you gotta do is just go to the website and on it there's
- 1:07:29a link to our Telegram group. It's actually another idea I
- 1:07:34took from the Paragliders. They use it to communicate their
- 1:07:38club things and on there people can go on and say, hey, is
- 1:07:42anyone interested in going paddling this weekend?
- 1:07:47It's free to join and then you can get messages and you can
- 1:07:50kind of like click into ones. If you're interested in going
- 1:07:52that weekend, you can join. So it's really just trying to
- 1:07:55like help people plan those outings on their own.
- 1:07:59We've had a couple little events last September we did paddling
- 1:08:04and pastries at Applegate Lake. The morning they got a morning
- 1:08:08paddle with some Donuts. I'm.
- 1:08:09Down for that I'm like this close to like starting a little
- 1:08:15coffee and hiking club cool so where we hike and then coffee
- 1:08:19out at like a summit point just for connectivity and.
- 1:08:22Totally. It was great.
- 1:08:24So I love that idea and I'm down.
- 1:08:25I will be there. Yeah.
- 1:08:28And then in this coming May, on May, Saturday, May 2nd, we're
- 1:08:32doing an outdoor gear sale, used gear.
- 1:08:36So if anyone has gear that they want to sell, it's going to be
- 1:08:40at the upper Applegate Grange just outside of Ruch and it's
- 1:08:46$15.00 to get a table space. But then you sell your gear and
- 1:08:53keep all your profits and so. It's not a fundraiser for.
- 1:08:58It's going to be a fundraiser for the Upper Applegate Grange.
- 1:09:01We are going to have like a donation table, so if you don't
- 1:09:03want to sit there all day and sell gear, you can donate it to
- 1:09:06and anything that's sold from that table will go to them.
- 1:09:10They're working on doing some repairs to the building.
- 1:09:13Cool, am I getting a new? Floor.
- 1:09:15Or this way? This way.
- 1:09:22But it's not a paddle club fundraiser.
- 1:09:24We're not really trying to raise money.
- 1:09:26We're not an actual, like, nonprofit.
- 1:09:29Just just your homies. Yeah.
- 1:09:32Oh, boy, there we go. We'll probably have, like, some
- 1:09:42food for sale there as well. Maybe some music.
- 1:09:46I know guys. Yeah, you know, a pretty good
- 1:09:53musician. So that's going to be like our
- 1:10:03Big Spring thing. There's no that way it looked
- 1:10:06like it. Up into the swamp.
- 1:10:09Yeah, I did. It looked like you could go that
- 1:10:10way. Around and then I'm also working
- 1:10:18on. I've had a lot of people reach
- 1:10:20out who might be interested in like, just like getting into
- 1:10:24boating, like on Applegate Lake. Yeah.
- 1:10:27And maybe not even on a river who don't know where to start,
- 1:10:31What kind of kayak, like do you pedal into the wind or do you
- 1:10:34pedal, you know, like thinking about those types of things.
- 1:10:37And so I'm working on getting certified as an instructor to
- 1:10:45the ACA to be able to provide some classes I'm not going to be
- 1:10:48doing like white water kayaking classes.
- 1:10:52There's plenty of other people out there that I'd recommend
- 1:10:54over me to do that. But just some like level 1
- 1:10:58paddle. How to move the boat around?
- 1:11:00Yeah, some like basic water safety stuff.
- 1:11:03And so again, just trying to help more people get out there.
- 1:11:07And yeah, it's been really cool to get involved with the
- 1:11:11community too, right? It's it's very rewarding.
- 1:11:14I know that sounds like very cliche, but.
- 1:11:18That's what we're all about. Cool.
- 1:11:19It's cool to ground you to the place and like, well, how else
- 1:11:23do you feel at home than being in a place and knowing the
- 1:11:27people going somewhere and seeing people that you enjoy,
- 1:11:30that support you, that light you up and celebrate you and are
- 1:11:34happy to interact and happy to have you there?
- 1:11:38Yeah. And vice versa.
- 1:11:41And I feel like, yeah, I guess once again, the community is
- 1:11:44like, help support me in ways too.
- 1:11:45So it's like nice to be able to get back.
- 1:11:48Yeah, You're giving something that they want and need.
- 1:11:50You're not showing up as like an outsider being like, I know
- 1:11:54better and I'm gonna no push this on all of you.
- 1:11:57It's like, oh, I see. And I see a hole that could be
- 1:12:00filled that people are asking for.
- 1:12:03Yeah. And I have the knowledge and the
- 1:12:04skills. To bring people together, right?
- 1:12:07Yeah, that's the I didn't know true.
- 1:12:10Like community, community around a particular something.
- 1:12:13So like with the bike shop, it's like.
- 1:12:15Oh yeah. We had never biked with people
- 1:12:19before. It was just me and Sean biking,
- 1:12:21maybe occasionally his brother. It's when we just get out, just
- 1:12:28get out and walk. It wasn't until we bought the
- 1:12:33bike shop and like, we formulated a weekly meet up,
- 1:12:38Yeah. And a weekly bike ride that like
- 1:12:41true community started to form. And then now we call it like the
- 1:12:44bike fam because like there's so much core community there that,
- 1:12:49you know, not necessarily every week the core comes out, but
- 1:12:56like when we do big, when we plan big bike trips and stuff
- 1:13:00and we invite everybody, a lot of people show up and it's
- 1:13:03created such a cool canister of like bike community.
- 1:13:08And I I love that so, but it but it wasn't until we bought the
- 1:13:13bike shop and like it kind of gave us more of a broader
- 1:13:15purpose to bring people together.
- 1:13:17That's when it started. Yeah.
- 1:13:19So. Yeah.
- 1:13:21And so like I was like, I had this idea to start this paddling
- 1:13:24club and hey, anyone want to join, you know, and so then that
- 1:13:28kind of caught on and stuff through that I was invited to
- 1:13:31join these outdoor recreation working group meetings for the
- 1:13:36Applegate Valley through a greater Applegate.
- 1:13:38And and then through that, I've like now started like leading
- 1:13:44that group and I mean really like, yeah, you show up.
- 1:13:48There's like a lot of opportunities for.
- 1:13:50People. Applegate is actually quite
- 1:13:52active. Yeah, they have all the greater.
- 1:13:54Applegate is like there's art and rec and community building
- 1:13:59and like entrepreneurship, like networking events that they hold
- 1:14:02just for that area. Like it's really they're trying
- 1:14:05to do a lot with a little. I give them so much props for
- 1:14:08that. That's amazing.
- 1:14:10Tell us what's a big area, really.
- 1:14:12Yeah. So it's like we say it's like 14
- 1:14:16community or towns, neighborhoods, however you want
- 1:14:19to say none of them are incorporated, spanning 50 miles,
- 1:14:253 counties and two states. Wow.
- 1:14:26Because if you think about it, perhaps it dips into Siskiyou
- 1:14:29County in California as well. I think that's Siskiyou.
- 1:14:33And then, yeah. So that's been really cool
- 1:14:37because I've been starting to learn more about like what's
- 1:14:40going on with like the Provo recreation site and they've got
- 1:14:44a lot of like cool programs going on.
- 1:14:46It used to be like an old BLM seed orchard and is now a day
- 1:14:50use park river access, really popular.
- 1:14:54We even go there popularity. They are working on some dark
- 1:14:59sky stuff there. You can actually check out like
- 1:15:02a meter to take to your place and like measure how dark their
- 1:15:05sky is. And yeah, they're working on
- 1:15:08getting designated like this. Some dark sky stuff.
- 1:15:12Out in Cape Junction they're doing some dark sky cool stuff,
- 1:15:15which is really neat. In talent they were.
- 1:15:17There was some dark sky initiatives OK also.
- 1:15:21And then like, yeah, it's like bringing together.
- 1:15:24You've got people who are doing trail stuff, you've got the
- 1:15:28Paragliders, you've got Equestrian Club, you know that.
- 1:15:32So it's cool. We're all kind of coming
- 1:15:34together to share what we're doing, what we're working on,
- 1:15:37maybe see if there's ways to collaborate.
- 1:15:40Which there always is. And there always is.
- 1:15:42And so that's been cool. Like another connection is I've
- 1:15:47been talking with the Applegate Partnership Watershed Council
- 1:15:50and helped put in, they put in a grant to do some invasive
- 1:15:56species removal here along the Applegate actually, like right
- 1:16:00here, like in this property, because this is the confluence
- 1:16:03yay of the road. And, and so it'd be like boating
- 1:16:09some of their people down to get to some of these spots and have
- 1:16:13them. They want to be able to like
- 1:16:14mark out where these invasives are and then be able to go talk
- 1:16:17to the property owners and come back and like work with the
- 1:16:20property owners to remove them. There's a few species of
- 1:16:24invasives that I think are like affecting the the rogue.
- 1:16:28And they can tell that they're all kind of coming from, like,
- 1:16:30the lower Applegate. Oh, interesting.
- 1:16:32Yeah. And so that's like a partnership
- 1:16:36that just kind of formed from going to those meetings and
- 1:16:39learning about what they're working on.
- 1:16:42Yeah, our little cohort table had Caleb Galloway.
- 1:16:46Yeah, yeah. And he was an interesting cat.
- 1:16:48And I was like, Oh my God, that's so rad.
- 1:16:49I got his number, sent it off to our admin and for her to do
- 1:16:57something with it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:59So. He's got some cool, some cool
- 1:17:01perspective. You know, it was really, I'm
- 1:17:05glad he was there representing. Yeah, I am too.
- 1:17:11So it's been fun. And then, you know, there's like
- 1:17:13some like destination tourism stuff that's going on in the
- 1:17:16Applegate 2 that they're. Yeah.
- 1:17:18What about the wine industry is that?
- 1:17:20Are you guys doing anything with them or do they have their kind
- 1:17:23of own little weirdness? Not weird, but you know they
- 1:17:27have their own core thing. They do.
- 1:17:30But I have the big get involved. I've heard that they're like
- 1:17:34that wine industry around here is, is hurting a little bit.
- 1:17:38Yeah, in particular just because of like the the decrease in
- 1:17:44nationwide like alcohol consumption over the last, like
- 1:17:47the trend is decreasing right now.
- 1:17:49Great. And they were starting.
- 1:17:52More grape juice, more raisins and table grapes, Yeah.
- 1:17:59They said that they often will sell like 40%.
- 1:18:04I could be totally broke on this number, but I want to say it was
- 1:18:06like 40% of their grapes up north.
- 1:18:09So they'll grow them here and then sell them to like wine
- 1:18:11makers out of the region and that this year they've not been
- 1:18:14able to. And so I started thinking I was
- 1:18:18like, well, a lot of these wineries are right along the
- 1:18:20Gate River. Wouldn't it be cool if like they
- 1:18:25offered like river access if you had like a wine club membership
- 1:18:29or something? And then I was like thinking,
- 1:18:32for example, that Provo recreation site they saw like
- 1:18:39such an increase in use. I want to say like I can't
- 1:18:43remember the exact number of how many visitors they counted in
- 1:18:45the last year, but I want to say it was like over 10,000.
- 1:18:48A moment for the confluence. Oh yeah.
- 1:18:51Yeah. We made it becomes.
- 1:18:53One did you? The great joining of the Z
- 1:18:58Applegate and Z Rogue Mother Rogue.
- 1:19:02She is giving life to her baby. The baby is actually giving life
- 1:19:05to her and it's amazing. It's beautiful.
- 1:19:10How cool to get to go to Merge River?
- 1:19:14To merge to cross. Try like this stretch because it
- 1:19:19is like, and then you're like, oh, I'm here now, I'm on the
- 1:19:22Rogue Swans. We're crossing them streams.
- 1:19:25Stop looking. At me Swan.
- 1:19:27Is that I don't know. Or goose, Goose.
- 1:19:30Fuck, I don't really see that as much out here.
- 1:19:32Yeah, don't. Yeah, don't see big white geese.
- 1:19:35Super awful. OK, let's get together ya ya,
- 1:19:37ya. Yeah.
- 1:19:38And I'll probably take over the camera again you.
- 1:19:42Know the camera? Yeah.
- 1:19:43Some more. I'll turn.
- 1:19:47Well, I guess that's the end of Emily's.
- 1:19:53POV OH. OK, what do we got going on?
- 1:19:55At least we were recording. No, we were recording.
- 1:20:01I checked several times. That's awesome.
- 1:20:07Yeah, well. Then I was like, yeah, what if,
- 1:20:09like, the wineries were encouraged to like.
- 1:20:13Encourage boating. Well, that or even just there's
- 1:20:16so many people like a provoke rec spot now that in the summer
- 1:20:20you can barely get to the water because there's so many people
- 1:20:23there going to access the water. Cool.
- 1:20:25So that's great. But then I'm like, well, what if
- 1:20:27we were able to like disperse some of the use to like
- 1:20:30wineries? And it would also give people
- 1:20:32like a reason to go to a winery and like, maybe they just like,
- 1:20:38maybe right now it's just blackberries against the river,
- 1:20:40but they like develop it into like a little like hangout spot
- 1:20:44or something, you know, So just find ways, other ways for them
- 1:20:47to to bring in income because they all have like really nice
- 1:20:50spots, right? Yeah, I don't.
- 1:20:52I don't mind paying 5 to 10 bucks to hang out or a glass of
- 1:20:56wine or something to like hang out for the day.
- 1:20:58Like if that's the entry fee or whatever.
- 1:21:01If they're going to charge a little bit like I don't.
- 1:21:03Mind they have snacks there. They got you don't have.
- 1:21:05To bring your own cartoon just cooler down, you can just like
- 1:21:10ring the bell. And they delivered cheese and
- 1:21:13crackers too. Do you know how far up you can
- 1:21:18like a cabana boy? Yeah, Cabana.
- 1:21:20Boys, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding. Boogie River can you put in on
- 1:21:24the Applegate? Like how?
- 1:21:25How? Cuz I've only started a, you
- 1:21:28know, fish hatchery. Can you go up?
- 1:21:30Farther. Oh yeah.
- 1:21:31You can put in at the dam. Oh wow, and it's big enough
- 1:21:35water like but there's some for. Kayaks for like an inflatable
- 1:21:40kayak, usually year round, it's enough.
- 1:21:43It's going to get low. I would say, you know, if you
- 1:21:47look at the gauges, typically the Applegate River gauge, like
- 1:21:52if it's like 150, that's a little low.
- 1:21:55OK. Another reason why it's not like
- 1:21:57a great inner tubing river because it's like gravel bars
- 1:22:01and you're barely floating over them.
- 1:22:03So however, there's some fun stuff to paddle up like from the
- 1:22:10dam to like almost like McKee Bridge area and then from McKee
- 1:22:15Bridge down to Cantrell Buckley, Cantrell Buckley down to the
- 1:22:20town of Applegate. So there's, there's some good
- 1:22:24stuff stretches cool. And then you can even go the
- 1:22:29middle fork of the Applegate is above the lake in California.
- 1:22:34And that one's more of like a we got some solid, solid class
- 1:22:38threes in there. That's more just like winter
- 1:22:41runoff. But also people vote that is.
- 1:22:43Really. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:22:45That's why it's like it'd be cool to get like, well these are
- 1:22:47fine too, but like the pack. Yeah, craft.
- 1:22:50Yeah, Craft. Would be just like cuz then you
- 1:22:52can pack it up and you can get it in and out and nice spots
- 1:22:56and. And you're more enclosed.
- 1:23:00Yeah, yeah, you can. Like it's like the skirt and
- 1:23:03stuff. A couple weekends ago I went on
- 1:23:07the Sandy River. It was the first time I'd have
- 1:23:10been on a river north of Roseburg in Oregon, which is
- 1:23:13like weird that I've not even, I'm not even made it that far.
- 1:23:16There's still 70 rivers to run down there.
- 1:23:18Same. I mean that that was one of the
- 1:23:20intentions of this pod was like, there's so much of Oregon that
- 1:23:24we've never seen or experienced that we want to see an
- 1:23:29experience but. With purpose in a sense like a
- 1:23:32little underlying purpose that could maybe potentially make us
- 1:23:35money. Therefore we could do the trips
- 1:23:36and it's all a big cycle of. Like.
- 1:23:39Yumminess. Yeah.
- 1:23:42So that was. Yeah, what was the Sandy like
- 1:23:44it? Was well, I thought we were
- 1:23:47going like on the really flat stretch, but no, there was
- 1:23:50Rabbids. There was fun.
- 1:23:52We didn't flip, so we were in like iks and whatnot, but it was
- 1:23:57super fun. So just like, yeah.
- 1:24:00We'll do again. Definitely, definitely.
- 1:24:04That's exciting. Yeah, there's just so there's so
- 1:24:07much here. I'm.
- 1:24:08Gonna put this bad boy of me. Away.
- 1:24:11The camera, No, Seattle. So that's, that's good.
- 1:24:22You still get out and paddle even though you're doing all of
- 1:24:25this illustrative stuff. Oh yeah, you're still getting
- 1:24:28out on the river. Totally.
- 1:24:29I'm probably getting out more now or just like more of a
- 1:24:32variety because, you know, when I was guiding full time, it
- 1:24:37would be like I spent 50 days on the river all on the rogue same
- 1:24:43stretches. You know, we're now paddling
- 1:24:47rivers, like new rivers. I'm trying to get out and like
- 1:24:50out every month at least a couple times.
- 1:24:52Good. Have you done an international
- 1:24:56river? I have, I just went on a
- 1:25:00honeymoon last summer to Europe and thanks and we ended up doing
- 1:25:072 river trips while we were on that.
- 1:25:10We're only planning for wine and then did like a little bonus day
- 1:25:13rafting on the Struma River in Bulgaria.
- 1:25:17Oh wow. Yeah, it was.
- 1:25:18It was cool. Wow.
- 1:25:22How much did. Yeah.
- 1:25:22So in all of this administrative river work you do, it's a lot of
- 1:25:28sounds like it's been a lot of collaborating with other US
- 1:25:32organizations. What about international?
- 1:25:35What do you have to learn? What is there to learn from how
- 1:25:40other countries and other continents are recreating on
- 1:25:43their rivers, you know? Are they recreating on their
- 1:25:47rivers? Were they in Bulgaria?
- 1:25:49Oh yeah, It was a big rafting scene there.
- 1:25:53They were like getting ready to host like the European Rafting
- 1:25:57Championship or something. That's pretty cool.
- 1:26:01We also went on a river. Oh, and I guess we're just about
- 1:26:04at our take out, so we'll have to do our wrap up questions
- 1:26:07after this one. And probably not quite right
- 1:26:11there. Yeah, we'll go maybe down to the
- 1:26:13yeah to the beach. So yeah, it was, it was I think
- 1:26:18what's really cool, one of the most exciting things I think is
- 1:26:20like there's a lot of countries working on the rights of rivers.
- 1:26:25Cool. And then having rivers like with
- 1:26:27their own like inherent rights and like having like someone who
- 1:26:30speaks for the river in like a court decision and things like
- 1:26:34that. So that's pretty cool.
- 1:26:36New Zealand's been doing some work on that as well as even
- 1:26:40like in Lyons, Co, there's a river that the town has voted to
- 1:26:46give rights to. So there's like some cool work
- 1:26:49being done internationally and within our country.
- 1:26:57Amazing. I think that's so.
- 1:27:00Like I think there's. So much to learn from, yeah.
- 1:27:04Yeah, from Are we going to go around right and catch that
- 1:27:06idiot? Yeah, we'll go around all the
- 1:27:08all the strainers. There's this spot down there
- 1:27:10since. I mean, it's a rocky beach.
- 1:27:11Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:27:12Since the boat ramp is a parking lot, apparently.
- 1:27:18I think that there's just so much to learn from from other
- 1:27:22countries in the world that the US often tries to do things just
- 1:27:28on their own. You're right.
- 1:27:30And the the rest of the world has a lot of a lot of insight
- 1:27:35and a lot of experience and a lot more history to tap into.
- 1:27:40And you can recreate just like that on a boat ramp.
- 1:27:44OK, so since we're at our take out, I guess we'll wrap it up
- 1:27:47and say first thank you so much for taking us out on on this
- 1:27:51little Applegate float and telling talking story with us.
- 1:27:59Pull in here and. Pull me in, then I'm pulling you
- 1:28:03in. What is your favorite piece of
- 1:28:09outdoor gear that you tend to always have with you?
- 1:28:14Well, when I'm camping I always have my cuddle buddy with me.
- 1:28:20Cuddle buddy, huh? Dog or husband?
- 1:28:23No, it's a piece of gear. It's made by fun love and fleece
- 1:28:30wear. They friend of mine, Kelly, owns
- 1:28:33the company and she makes fleece Paco pad covers that are in fun
- 1:28:38designs. But you can, it's like a fitted
- 1:28:40sheet that goes around your Paco pad.
- 1:28:43And so then you can like, sleep on like, yeah.
- 1:28:46And on the other side, it's cotton.
- 1:28:48So if it's like hot out, you can do that.
- 1:28:49And it's reversible. And it's just made like my Paco
- 1:28:53pad sleeping like even better, you know, even though like I
- 1:28:56could sleep anywhere in a pot, in a pocket.
- 1:28:58That's a great. So check it out and then, yeah,
- 1:29:04that's probably my favorite one. Awesome.
- 1:29:06Yeah, I'm getting one of those for sure.
- 1:29:08They're. Cool.
- 1:29:09And they make even a 11 perfect. So yeah, we've got, we've got
- 1:29:13some singles we've got to double, you know.
- 1:29:15Got the whole line up, the whole family.
- 1:29:18Yep. And a piece of advice for your
- 1:29:22younger self. It would probably be something
- 1:29:33around like, I don't know, just thinking about being on the
- 1:29:40river and how like river guiding community sometimes has a lot of
- 1:29:44ego in it and people trying to prove themselves.
- 1:29:48And I think I'm pretty good at giving advice now.
- 1:29:52I'm like, hey, if someone wants to scout something, let's scout
- 1:29:55it. We all want to be comfortable
- 1:29:56here. Like, let's drop the ego because
- 1:29:58that's not going to help us. And I think for too long I was
- 1:30:01just trying to, like, fit in. So I'd be like, let that go even
- 1:30:05earlier. Just be yourself and you'll find
- 1:30:08your community of puddlers. And you know, like, you don't
- 1:30:12have to try to be cool to be cool.
- 1:30:17It's even cooler if you don't have to try, right?
- 1:30:20Yep, Yep. And you just realize that you
- 1:30:22are inherently cool. Hey, in your face, we all are.
- 1:30:25We all are so amazing. And if people want to learn more
- 1:30:29about you, get involved in the things that you do.
- 1:30:33Where can you be found if you want to be found?
- 1:30:36I have like 7 e-mail addresses that I check.
- 1:30:39All of them. No they probably the easiest way
- 1:30:43is through the Applegate Paddling Club.
- 1:30:44Applegate paddlingclub.org there's an e-mail on there goes
- 1:30:50straight to me. Otherwise you can also look up
- 1:30:54the Society of Outdoor recreation Professionals sort my
- 1:30:58emails all over their websites as well.
- 1:31:02Or just come down to the river and you'll probably if you stand
- 1:31:06next to the river or at a put in or take out long enough will
- 1:31:09probably cost paths so. Just yell at Andrew.
- 1:31:11Yeah, yeah, that's cool. Amazing.
- 1:31:14I have a the quick question. I think we've been a little
- 1:31:17forgetting sometimes, but what's some advice for somebody looking
- 1:31:22to get out to recreate how you recreate, which is also, I know
- 1:31:26that you're going to plug in Applegate paddlers, but like,
- 1:31:30you know, somebody that aspires to be a river person, but they
- 1:31:33need that kick in the butt or just some guidance.
- 1:31:37Yeah, I would say don't be afraid to just like reach out to
- 1:31:40folks, right? I don't know, like it can seem
- 1:31:43like such a big like daunting thing to be like, hi, I want to
- 1:31:47do this. I don't know what I'm doing, but
- 1:31:51I love taking out people like all the time, like of any
- 1:31:53experience level, No experience. I've invited folks that I've met
- 1:31:57through Ladies of Whitewater Kayaking on the Lower Rogue
- 1:32:00trip, you know, so I think just throw it out there and you're
- 1:32:05going to find someone to help get you out there.
- 1:32:09And it's always more fun to do with someone else, right?
- 1:32:12And make a new friend. So that'd be my advice.
- 1:32:14Love that, love that. Yay.
- 1:32:16And when your body expires and your soul leaves this plane of
- 1:32:20existence, how do you want to be remembered?
- 1:32:24Oh, for being authentic and valuing relationships.
- 1:32:33Yeah, being a good friend, good community member.
- 1:32:36Hell yeah. I think you're doing a really
- 1:32:38good job of that you're doing. And I think it's a testament to
- 1:32:41that, that we've both known you for a long time and.
- 1:32:45And I have to say too with that, like, even though we literally
- 1:32:48have not seen each other for like 10 years, like I still
- 1:32:52like, I know we follow each other on like Facebook or
- 1:32:55whatever, but like you're a person that I'm like, oh, Angie,
- 1:32:58she knows me. And like, we were like, I just
- 1:33:01had this instant click, you know, it was like, so some
- 1:33:04people just have that way just the spark that clicks, you know,
- 1:33:08and then they feel like they know you like I feel I'm like,
- 1:33:10yeah, Angie. Like I know Angie.
- 1:33:12Yeah. You know, not like we met and it
- 1:33:14was we haven't talked. So like, I don't know what she's
- 1:33:16up to or like just, you know, I don't know, you know what I
- 1:33:19mean? Yeah.
- 1:33:19And so. Genuine that way, genuine
- 1:33:21friend. Genuine friend for sure.
- 1:33:24I vibe that for sure. Well, it won't be 10 more years.
- 1:33:27We're going to do it again. Soon, Yes, we will.
- 1:33:29Yeah. I want to come out.
- 1:33:30I want to come out that May 2nd you.
- 1:33:32Said Oh yeah, come on out May 2nd over Applegate Grange.
- 1:33:36Also like be out paddling before then and after then and all
- 1:33:40summer long. Is there a little like Facebook
- 1:33:42event for that? Yes, I think I set one up.
- 1:33:48OK, cool. I think I set one up.
- 1:33:52It's on Facebook. There's a flyer out there.
- 1:33:54Because if you do want a table, we're encouraging people to sign
- 1:33:58up before that's. The used gear, yeah.
- 1:34:01Do you have another like paddle pastries?
- 1:34:05Not planned yet, but likely in September we'll do something for
- 1:34:09the Jacksephine Country Fair Week, which is a week long event
- 1:34:14in the Applegate celebrating all sorts of food, music, art,
- 1:34:19recreation, community. Cool.
- 1:34:22So there's just so many cool things going on here in Southern
- 1:34:25Oregon and in Jackson County and Josephine County, and thank you
- 1:34:29for being a big part of making that happen and building
- 1:34:32community and sharing stoke and information and getting people
- 1:34:36outside. Now, thank you.
- 1:34:38Thank you for doing this. And yeah.
