Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right now. It is football at four.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Adam Kaplan is pinch hitting today for Jeff Mosher and
- 0:06Speaker 2: we got a little bit of draft conversation. You're not
- 0:08Speaker 2: going to want to miss. With less than three weeks
- 0:11Speaker 2: to go, Adam until the NFL Draft, what's going on?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Man?
- 0:15Speaker 3: Yeah, two weeks on this Thursday, it's hard to believe. Yes,
- 0:17Speaker 3: we're getting there. We're certainly getting there with fifteen days left.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So you know, so the subject of our show that's
- 0:23Speaker 3: dropped this one with Jeff and I was let's upgrade that,
- 0:26Speaker 3: let's update the needs, the top needs for this draft.
- 0:28Speaker 3: And they're Remember we've said this, this is our ninth year.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It's always about the future for the draft. You're not
- 0:36Speaker 3: really looking hard at this year. You're looking at future needs.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So look some people, because I've looked at the YouTube comments,
- 0:43Speaker 3: so a lot of them are most of them there
- 0:45Speaker 3: really aren't target. You know a lot of people want
- 0:47Speaker 3: Lane Johnson's replacement to be that guy. I have no
- 0:49Speaker 3: problem with that.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Well, it's certainly a necessity. Right, you don't know how
- 0:52Speaker 2: much longer Lane is going to go. We're going to
- 0:55Speaker 2: take a look at some of the needs for this draft.
- 0:57Speaker 2: For twenty twenty six, and you know one spot that
- 1:00Speaker 2: they certainly, I don't know that at twenty three you're
- 1:03Speaker 2: going to get a player that will help you or
- 1:05Speaker 2: upgrade what you already have.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It edge, But that has got to be something on.
- 1:09Speaker 3: The list, right, So we have at number one. But look,
- 1:13Speaker 3: if you want to put up right tackle to get
- 1:15Speaker 3: Lane Johnson's replacement, no problem. If you want to get
- 1:19Speaker 3: your corner up there, because they don't have a starter
- 1:21Speaker 3: past the season opposite Quinion Mitchell safety, we totally get
- 1:25Speaker 3: that they need a safety to play to start for
- 1:29Speaker 3: the future next to Macouba. I get that. But this
- 1:33Speaker 3: Eagles told you what they thought of that edge position.
- 1:37Speaker 3: They were willing to pay Jalen Phillips handsomely, So they
- 1:39Speaker 3: already gave you the answers to the test you will
- 1:41Speaker 3: need to guess. They told you they wanted them back.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They're paying big time, so they told you it was
- 1:46Speaker 3: a major need for the future. Well, unfortunately signed with Carolina.
- 1:50Speaker 3: So it's Dnald Smith, it's jayoak Son, it's try and
- 1:53Speaker 3: Shrey Inca and Ebihetti after this season, Mike technically only
- 1:57Speaker 3: one of those guys is on a contract. So the
- 1:59Speaker 3: tell you, Mike that it's a major need for the
- 2:02Speaker 3: future edge rusher.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We all agree on that one, and you're right.
- 2:06Speaker 2: They last year they went and got Phillip, So it
- 2:09Speaker 2: tells you they think they need a better player than
- 2:11Speaker 2: what they have currently there upgraded edge, no doubt about it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You mentioned right tackle, that would be you know, Lane Johnson.
- 2:20Speaker 2: We don't know how many more years, but you wouldn't
- 2:22Speaker 2: be surprised probably if they took any spot on.
- 2:24Speaker 1: The offensive line.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I would imagine because you got Handed Dickerson, you got Jurgens,
- 2:27Speaker 2: both with injuries.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Now at twenty three is guard of value. Guard's typically
- 2:33Speaker 3: not a great value in the first round and less
- 2:37Speaker 3: that guy is big time and there really is no
- 2:40Speaker 3: the Penn State ione, the Penn State interior linement he
- 2:44Speaker 3: might go is somewhere between fifteen and thirty. But that
- 2:47Speaker 3: that would be it. But to me, like I'll give
- 2:51Speaker 3: you an example when they drafted Lane Johnson, it's just
- 2:54Speaker 3: funny how things work out. In twenty thirteen, they drafted
- 2:57Speaker 3: Lane Johnson to play left tackle to be the eventual
- 3:00Speaker 3: replacement for Jason Peters. Well, Peterce didn't retire. Lane played
- 3:05Speaker 3: right tackle year one and He never moved. He told
- 3:07Speaker 3: them at the time, if I was told privately that
- 3:11Speaker 3: Lane made it very clear to them that he wanted
- 3:12Speaker 3: to stay at right tackle. Nobody disagreed. He stayed at
- 3:15Speaker 3: right tackle. Twenty nineteen, Mike, they did it again. They
- 3:19Speaker 3: now this one they forced, they drafted. They thought Andre
- 3:23Speaker 3: Dillard to be the replacement for Jason Peters. Andre Diller
- 3:27Speaker 3: was a bust. They forced it. This is the COVID situation.
- 3:31Speaker 3: They didn't have great information, but they framed it. That
- 3:34Speaker 3: was the term I came up. They kind of choreographed
- 3:36Speaker 3: what they were going to do. You never force a
- 3:39Speaker 3: pick where you're like, we have to get this, like
- 3:41Speaker 3: when you do that more often not, you're going to miss.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And that's what happened there. So to me, if they
- 3:47Speaker 3: take Lane Johnson's replacement at twenty three, smart pick that
- 3:51Speaker 3: you just hope it works out for the long term.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So obviously Lane Johnson right tackle spot would be there,
- 3:57Speaker 2: the tight end position. You know they didn't bring Goddard back,
- 4:01Speaker 2: but would that be a spot at twenty three that
- 4:04Speaker 2: would be a top need for this draft.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Well, you don't have to do it at twenty three,
- 4:09Speaker 3: but Mike, you'd like to get his replacement now again
- 4:13Speaker 3: at this is he had another posision where it's it's
- 4:16Speaker 3: completely barren air for the season. Got her back on
- 4:20Speaker 3: a one year deal. Kateran a one year deal. Johnny
- 4:23Speaker 3: Unn on a one year deal. He's a he's a
- 4:25Speaker 3: he's a wide tight end in line today ind Cam
- 4:27Speaker 3: Law two on the second year. He's on the front
- 4:30Speaker 3: of year his deal. Stone Smart on a one year deal.
- 4:34Speaker 3: He j Jenkins resigned. He's signed for two years. But
- 4:37Speaker 3: he doesn't he doesn't factor in. He's not he's not
- 4:39Speaker 3: part of the rotation. He has his earn his way.
- 4:40Speaker 3: He must like to be a practice squad player. And
- 4:43Speaker 3: jaheen Bell is an undersized move tight end. He's a
- 4:46Speaker 3: very long shot to make it so, Mike, they have
- 4:48Speaker 3: nothing past the season at ted end position. That's don't draft. Yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 3: if they don't dress it at twenty three. The only
- 4:54Speaker 3: guy you would address it with, the only one you
- 4:56Speaker 3: could we conside Kenyon Sude. No one will go close
- 4:59Speaker 3: to that at tight end, Mike. But as far as
- 5:04Speaker 3: the being a good player to take there, yes, it's
- 5:07Speaker 3: not a value position tight end Mike definitely is not.
- 5:11Speaker 3: It's seventh or eighth on a valuaboard for clubs. But
- 5:15Speaker 3: it's Kenyan, Sadik and everyone else with the draft, so
- 5:17Speaker 3: it's a deep draft. You can wait. He's so much
- 5:20Speaker 3: better than the other tight ends in this draft.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I will ask this question, Adam, is that evolving? I
- 5:25Speaker 2: mean we've seen guys like Bowers, and there's a lot
- 5:28Speaker 2: of tight ends that have gone in the first round
- 5:31Speaker 2: recently here.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but with Bowers, Okay, Warren TJ Warren, right, Warren Yep, yep, Warren,
- 5:38Speaker 3: big time tight end in the middle of the first round.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Uh yeah, so yeah, no doubt. But you got to
- 5:44Speaker 3: be an absolute stud. Warren is a stud, like he's
- 5:46Speaker 3: going to be really good. When t J. Hockinson went
- 5:48Speaker 3: in the first round for Detroit day later some years
- 5:51Speaker 3: down the road, they.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Trained took a guy in the first round last to right, yep, yep.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, no, very good point, Mike. But Colston Lovelin, Yes,
- 5:59Speaker 3: really big down now he's more of an athletic tight end,
- 6:02Speaker 3: not much of a blocker. He's an okay blocker. But yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 3: The thing is, though, Mike, there's no like you saw him.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Many went in the first round last year. We don't
- 6:12Speaker 3: have that but the depth of it, they're probably twelve
- 6:15Speaker 3: to fifteen tight ends that will wind up starting the
- 6:17Speaker 3: National FOOTBA League over the next four to five years
- 6:20Speaker 3: that were drafted that'll be selected in this draft. That's
- 6:22Speaker 3: pretty good.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yes, So we'll go to another position where the Eagles.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Have taken in recent years.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Here, the actually took two a couple of years ago,
- 6:32Speaker 2: one in the first round, one in the second round.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And that is a corner. They did sign Woollan.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Would that prevent them from thinking about a corner at
- 6:40Speaker 2: twenty three this year?
- 6:42Speaker 3: No, one doesn't have to do the other. Wollan's on
- 6:43Speaker 3: a one year deal. So had Wollan signed more than
- 6:46Speaker 3: one year deal, different story. Now, that doesn't mean that
- 6:48Speaker 3: Howie Roseman might keep it to himself and say, you
- 6:52Speaker 3: know what, we're paying this guy twelve million for a season.
- 6:56Speaker 3: We don't want this to be a one year relationship.
- 6:58Speaker 3: We think we can get in play with better discipline.
- 7:01Speaker 3: That led the Seahawks in defensive penalties last season. That's embarrassing.
- 7:04Speaker 3: You don't want that to happen. But Mike, we talked
- 7:09Speaker 3: about Willing before. He's a guy, very very talented, great size,
- 7:12Speaker 3: unbelievable size, for the cornerback position, just under six foot four.
- 7:17Speaker 3: But there's a reason why the Seahawks didn't bring him back,
- 7:21Speaker 3: multiple reasons. Wasn't just that that they couldn't pay everybody
- 7:24Speaker 3: who's having disciplined player. I told you more than once
- 7:27Speaker 3: they tried to trade him at the trade deadline. Nobody
- 7:29Speaker 3: took him. So I remember Degene. Look, Mike Dejeene would
- 7:33Speaker 3: have taken care of this. Who wouldn't even talking about this?
- 7:36Speaker 3: But they moved him from corner to nickel. As vic
- 7:39Speaker 3: Fango said, I don't know how many times Nichol is
- 7:42Speaker 3: not a cornerback. He is not is Nickel Now? He
- 7:45Speaker 3: does play, at least he has played corner and base,
- 7:50Speaker 3: but only about ten plays per game. We don't even
- 7:52Speaker 3: know if that's going to happen anymore. We'll see, but
- 7:55Speaker 3: right now, corner is absolutely a future need.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And then there's safety, which they lost red blanket ship.
- 8:01Speaker 2: They did draft mccouba last year in the second round.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That you have Marcus EPs here and man not a
- 8:06Speaker 2: whole hecker else at that safety position. So is safety
- 8:10Speaker 2: a first round value position? It hasn't really been for
- 8:13Speaker 2: this team, right, No, I.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Don't see it. Later Caleb Dallas is highly unlikely to
- 8:18Speaker 3: make it to twenty three. If Now, if he gets closed,
- 8:23Speaker 3: let's say he's there at eighteen, that's when you could
- 8:26Speaker 3: see a trade up. I mean, we'd have to see
- 8:28Speaker 3: also who else is on the board, who else drops,
- 8:30Speaker 3: But that's a guy kind of like your hot camera off.
- 8:33Speaker 3: He gets too close that you're way too close. That's
- 8:38Speaker 3: where how I could potentially trade up. But yeah, there's
- 8:40Speaker 3: probably not gonna be another safety that will go in
- 8:42Speaker 3: the first round. And it's not a you have to
- 8:45Speaker 3: be a multi you have to be a multi purpose safety.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You can't be a box safety and go in the
- 8:51Speaker 3: first round. And you can't just be a deep safety.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You have to be able to do other things if
- 8:54Speaker 3: you're going to go in the first round in safety.
- 8:56Speaker 2: All right, So those are five positions of top needs
- 9:00Speaker 2: for this Eagles draft, and we kind of hinted that
- 9:02Speaker 2: offensive line draft, you could probably they got a lot
- 9:05Speaker 2: of middle round pick multiple threes and fours and five
- 9:08Speaker 2: where they can start to try to find guys, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 2: in the event that Jurgons or Landon Dickerson can't make
- 9:14Speaker 2: it through the.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Season, which could happen. Mike unfortunately. And then the other
- 9:18Speaker 3: thing is they broke down physically so barely. Yes, they
- 9:22Speaker 3: brought Fred Johnson back on another, yet another one year deal.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Cam Williams played one game, very intriguing game, not perfect.
- 9:30Speaker 3: He had some place you'd like to have back, but
- 9:32Speaker 3: overall was a good game against Washington. But overall they
- 9:37Speaker 3: just have poured depth in the offensive line and Milesonton
- 9:39Speaker 3: didn't want to playing last season. Who was their last pick,
- 9:43Speaker 3: the sixth rounder out of Michigan, And know Holland Pierce's
- 9:46Speaker 3: developmental tackle, Who's got unbelievable measurables, but that that he's
- 9:51Speaker 3: got a major project, has got major challenges with technique.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Willie Lampkin is too small, He's on a five to eleven.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Was intriguing, was an undrafted free agent for the Eagles,
- 10:00Speaker 3: claimeduff waivers, didn't wind up playing last season. They just
- 10:04Speaker 3: need Mike. They missed some. Trevor Keegan, who was a
- 10:07Speaker 3: fifth renner a couple of years ago, was claimed off
- 10:09Speaker 3: waivers by the Cowboys. That miss hurt them. Mike. They
- 10:12Speaker 3: don't have that, Jack Driscoll, So on your point, I
- 10:15Speaker 3: totally agree that is definitely a need a developmental backup
- 10:19Speaker 3: interior offensive lineman. And they have Drew Kendall, who probably
- 10:23Speaker 3: is not a guard at this level, more of a
- 10:25Speaker 3: center though they may cross train them as they did
- 10:27Speaker 3: in training camp. So, Mike, they got to develop these
- 10:29Speaker 3: young players. That that's something that has got to be
- 10:31Speaker 3: done for the future.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and keep in mind, every time you used to
- 10:35Speaker 2: take a lineman in the past, it was just kind
- 10:36Speaker 2: of like, well, you know, Stalin will work with them.
- 10:38Speaker 2: That's out the window now, right, Mike.
- 10:42Speaker 3: That is a great point. That is a secret source
- 10:45Speaker 3: of the Stalin experience. Do you remember Chip Kelly, for
- 10:49Speaker 3: all of his fate, his problems, one of the best
- 10:52Speaker 3: hires in Egles hisstory. He hired him in twenty thirteen,
- 10:55Speaker 3: comes from University of Alabama and fit he brought in
- 10:58Speaker 3: was a great move and some other and it's we
- 11:03Speaker 3: don't Chris Cooper was not brought back by Minnesota. That
- 11:06Speaker 3: does worry me. He does not have a big developmental
- 11:10Speaker 3: list of players on his resume. Mike. That's something we're
- 11:13Speaker 3: going to have to look at. That that is going
- 11:15Speaker 3: to be a big deal for Chris Cooper in his
- 11:17Speaker 3: future with Eagles is how he develops his young players.
- 11:19Speaker 2: All right, that certainly will be a story. The draft
- 11:22Speaker 2: is less than three weeks away, and that will be fun.
- 11:25Speaker 2: We'll be live at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City
- 11:28Speaker 2: at the Balcony Bar, and of course the Inside the
- 11:30Speaker 2: Birds podcast. They have plenty of stuff on the podcast
- 11:34Speaker 2: and Inside the Birds dot.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Com leading you up to the NFL Draft. Thanks Adam,
- 11:38Speaker 1: thank you,
