- 0:24Hello and welcome to Talking FACS.
- 0:26What you need to know about family food finance and fitness.
- 0:29I am your host,
- 0:30Mindy McCulley Extension Specialist for instructional support with Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:38We are housed in the Martin Gatton College of Agriculture,
- 0:41Food and Environment.
- 0:42My guest today is Miranda Bejda,
- 0:44a doctoral student in the Department of Family Sciences and she's a graduate research assistant in the School of Human Environmental Sciences.
- 0:52Welcome,
- 0:52Miranda.
- 0:54Hi Mindy.
- 0:56I think that we're gonna have a fun discussion today because our topic is saving on staycations and vacations who doesn't want to be traveling or at least taking um,
- 1:07some time off during the summer.
- 1:10And so this is gonna be a great opportunity to talk about ways that we can save money while we're doing those activities.
- 1:16Right.
- 1:17Right.
- 1:19Lots of people have probably heard the term staycation and maybe they haven't really considered what it actually means.
- 1:26So will you break that down for us?
- 1:28Yeah.
- 1:29So staycation combines the words stay and vacation.
- 1:32So a lot of people think that that means sitting at home in your comfy clothes all day,
- 1:37but it doesn't have to.
- 1:38So a staycation can be any local trip that doesn't require some of those typical vacation costs such as hotels,
- 1:45for example.
- 1:46So you might take a day trip to visit some nearby tourist attractions that maybe you haven't visited before.
- 1:52This lets you have the experience of a fun trip while keeping travel costs low.
- 1:57Oh,
- 1:57and we have some great opportunities here in Kentucky that many people travel and spend money to stay here to visit.
- 2:05But since we live in Kentucky,
- 2:07we don't have to have the overnight expenses.
- 2:09So what are some of those opportunities that we have here in Kentucky to enjoy a staycation or day trip?
- 2:16Yeah.
- 2:16As you said,
- 2:17Kentucky has a lot to offer.
- 2:19So you can look into attractions related to horses,
- 2:22bourbon cars and sports as well as outdoor adventures like visiting state parks or going camping.
- 2:29Yes.
- 2:29And we,
- 2:30uh have the distinction of having just almost as many water miles as land miles in Kentucky.
- 2:37So that's of course,
- 2:38a great benefit.
- 2:39And then we have the National Park and as well as the state parks too.
- 2:44So you can cave or you can boat or you can hike or you can just about do anything that you can do anywhere else and do it.
- 2:51All right,
- 2:51here in the State,
- 2:53there really is so much to offer in Kentucky.
- 2:56So some people would really like to travel and they like to get out and be gone for long periods of time.
- 3:04So,
- 3:06are staycations really the only cost effective ways to spend some time away from home?
- 3:11They're not,
- 3:12there are several ways that you can save money on vacations.
- 3:15Uh One way is to travel with other people.
- 3:18So consider traveling with friends or family to share costs on things like lodging or food.
- 3:23When you're traveling with a group,
- 3:25you might be able to share a rental with a kitchen or a grill and cook food at home.
- 3:29As opposed to eating out,
- 3:30you can also look for group discounts for attractions or split up into smaller groups so that everyone can visit the attractions they're most interested in.
- 3:39And I know that we have some publications uh that are related to this type of travel that we can share in the show notes and then also your money wise newsletter for this month is about this topic.
- 3:51And so we'll share that in the show notes as well.
- 3:53But when we're planning for a trip,
- 3:55what are some things that we really need to consider,
- 3:58consider when you want to take your trip?
- 4:00So traveling during peak days or seasons tends to come with a higher price tag.
- 4:04So summer is a great travel time.
- 4:07But if you're traveling to places like beaches,
- 4:10those might come with a higher price tag than traveling during other times of the year.
- 4:16If you plan to fly,
- 4:17try and take flights in the middle of the week,
- 4:19when possible because flights tend to be more expensive.
- 4:22On Mondays and Fridays,
- 4:23people are trying to extend their weekend.
- 4:25So also consider where you'll be staying.
- 4:28So short term rentals or camping might be more cost effective than hotels.
- 4:33Uh You could also visit your family or friends that might be willing to host you for a day or two.
- 4:38That's right.
- 4:39And I always like to remind people of my grandmother's adage that fish and company start to smell after three days.
- 4:46So you don't want to stay too long and overstay.
- 4:49You're welcome.
- 4:49Right.
- 4:50Exactly.
- 4:51Don't invite yourself for a two week stay.
- 4:53But that's exactly right.
- 4:55So,
- 4:55do you have any final tips for saving on vacations uh for this summer budget,
- 5:01your trips,
- 5:02even if it's hard,
- 5:03try to create a budget before you head out include all of your expenses,
- 5:07transportation,
- 5:08lodging,
- 5:09food attractions,
- 5:10and souvenirs rank what's most important to spend money on.
- 5:14So for example,
- 5:15maybe you really want to try a pricier restaurant and could eat in for some of your other meals to save money.
- 5:21You might also give each family member a set amount of fun money for things like souvenirs and finally look for discounts that may lower costs such as for Children,
- 5:30students or seniors.
- 5:32Many attractions also have discounted prices for certain days of the week or even certain times of day.
- 5:38And I've also found that you might be able to find discounts.
- 5:42If you look at your local grocery store or other partner institutions,
- 5:48you might be able to find discounts for certain attractions.
- 5:50So check out those as well.
- 5:53And if you find that you can't maybe afford that far away trip this year plan for that staycation and,
- 5:58and do something locally because we always like to,
- 6:01to put more money into our local economy,
- 6:04don't we?
- 6:05Yes,
- 6:05we do.
- 6:06Miranda.
- 6:07Thank you so much for your time today.
- 6:08I know that this has been a fun conversation for me and I hope that our listeners will enjoy their time away from home or staying home and doing something fun locally this summer.
