Latest / He's Hot but Something's Off... / HHBSO 120: What's the Point of House Plants?
Transcript
- 0:02Hello welcome to he's hot, but something's off oh right.
- 0:07How many episodes are we? Up to 130 something 140, still
- 0:13struggling with the soundboard. All right.
- 0:18My allergies have been going crazy the last couple of weeks
- 0:24for some reason. I have hay fever, which is being
- 0:29allergic to pollen. So usually from late winter
- 0:36until late summer I will take allergy medication and it's
- 0:43usually a nose spray that I do everyday.
- 0:48Usually from February, March on, usually February, see from
- 0:54February I'll start taking it. And then usually when we get to
- 0:59October ish, like now ish, I can stop taking it.
- 1:04There's obviously in the winter time there's not, you know,
- 1:07plants don't pollinate in the winter.
- 1:11So I stopped taking my nose spray, the algae nose spray a
- 1:16couple of weeks ago and out of nowhere the allergies kicked
- 1:22back then what? Not out of nowhere.
- 1:23Sometimes I stopped taking a little early in the season.
- 1:27So that happened and I thought, OK, I'm probably just stop doing
- 1:32the nose spray a little bit early.
- 1:36I'm still, you know, getting the the itchy nose, not itchy, but
- 1:41you know that feeling you have when you kind of want to sneeze,
- 1:45but not totally. Your body has committed to
- 1:50pissing you off by making you think you might sneeze without
- 1:54the satisfaction of actually sneezing and getting it over
- 1:58with. That's one of the most annoying
- 2:00parts of having allergies. When you have a cold or a flu
- 2:05and you sneeze, you just sneeze. The sneeze just comes, you
- 2:10sneeze and it's over. But when you have allergies,
- 2:15you're kind of kept on the edge of sneezing forever for as long
- 2:23as your allergy symptoms are present.
- 2:25If one of your allergy symptoms is sneezing, what happens is the
- 2:31sensation of you may be needing to sneeze drifts in and out.
- 2:38It's you feel it in your sinuses just like across the just inside
- 2:42the bridge of your nose. And it's quite distracting
- 2:48because you get this little sensation in your sinus is that
- 2:53a sneeze might be coming, but you don't know if it comes or
- 2:58not. So it's just it's, it's, it's
- 3:00quite annoying. The only thing more annoying
- 3:03than that feeling when you do have hay fever is if it's really
- 3:10bad and your eyes get itchy. Have you ever had your eyes be
- 3:13itchy due to an allergic reaction?
- 3:16You want to rip your eyes out. I remember I was in London.
- 3:21It's many, many years ago work sent me to London for three
- 3:25months. Oh, I should one day talk about
- 3:27that. When I spent three months in
- 3:29London. This is so many years ago.
- 3:31Work sent me to London for 1/4 for three months and I was
- 3:35working the office one day and it was springtime.
- 3:38I was there during Q2, so that's April, May and June.
- 3:43That's the second quarter and it's springtime and one day I
- 3:49was in the office and my eyes got so itchy from allergies in
- 3:54the middle of the work day. I had to go across the street to
- 3:58a pharmacy and get some eye drops to put into my eyes.
- 4:05I remember that day was really bad, but my allergies are under
- 4:09control now. Usually I just take the spray
- 4:11and it's OK. But the weird thing by the way,
- 4:14I totally know you guys all signed to the hear about my
- 4:16allergies. The weird thing that's been
- 4:18happening the last couple of weeks is when I go outside, like
- 4:24when I'm at the gym, when I walk into the gym, I'm at the gym and
- 4:27I come back, I'm out of the house for about 3 hours, no
- 4:31allergy symptoms. When I'm at home, the allergy
- 4:36symptoms kick in and it's pretty common for pollen to make it's
- 4:41way indoors, to make it's way into your house.
- 4:45And you can't really see pollen, but it's just kind of sort of
- 4:48everywhere. Because you open your windows
- 4:51for ventilation, you may have like a fan going, You have your
- 4:55air conditioning circulating air all throughout your house and
- 4:59you've got floors, you've got your furniture, you've got your
- 5:03bedding, you know it Pollen kind of sort of gets everywhere.
- 5:06It's kind of in everything. Just most people don't have hay
- 5:09fever, therefore it doesn't really matter.
- 5:12So I thought, OK, maybe it's just pollen has made his way
- 5:16into the house. I'm, I'm not the absolute best
- 5:19at vacuuming. I have a robot vacuum, but robot
- 5:23vacuums don't have great suction.
- 5:27They would do a decent job of like dust and stuff, but a robot
- 5:31vacuum doesn't replace a proper vacuum.
- 5:36So a week ago, like last weekend, I thought, OK, let's
- 5:39just vacuum the entire house because I don't really do that
- 5:42that often. And I just got this brand new
- 5:44vacuum as well. So it's like a really good
- 5:45vacuum. So I vacuumed the entire house.
- 5:48I even vacuumed my couch. I've got a couch that's fabric.
- 5:52So obviously you can get like, dust and pollen and other things
- 5:56trapped in the fabric. About once a year, actually take
- 5:59the slip covers off of my sofa and wash it.
- 6:03I don't think I've done it this year.
- 6:04I've been too busy. But anyways, I vacuum my couch.
- 6:07I changed my bedding, I vacuum the entire house.
- 6:12And that's about as much as you can, you can do.
- 6:16I mean, if pollen gets into your clothes, you launder your
- 6:19clothes. Every so often, the laundry
- 6:20takes care of it. But yeah, for some reason when
- 6:23I'm out of the house, I don't have the allergy symptoms.
- 6:27When I'm in the house, they come right back.
- 6:30Today at the gym, I was fine at the gym and then when I got back
- 6:33to the locker room, out of nowhere the allergies start
- 6:36kicking in. So I think, is there something
- 6:38in my house that I'm allergic to?
- 6:40It's so weird because if it was pollen, when I go outside it
- 6:46should be kicking in, but it doesn't kick in at all when I'm
- 6:50outside and I'm outside for like 3 hours.
- 6:54When I come back home it's I'm sneezing so much.
- 6:57It's really weird and I think what in my house could I be
- 7:01allergic to yesterday, last night, but I was on my couch in
- 7:06my living room watching TV to the right on my TVI have plants.
- 7:12This by the way, if you're watching the video version of
- 7:14this podcast on my YouTube channel is just your Vt.
- 7:17You can see behind me there is a plant is fake.
- 7:19It's from IKEA, not allergic to that, but I have some real
- 7:24plants. Some real plants in a couple of
- 7:27planter boxes to the right of my TV in the living room in the
- 7:33corner. It's right by my patio doors so
- 7:38that the plants get a little bit of sunlight.
- 7:40Actually went to a plant store years ago and asked them what
- 7:45plants? OK, what plants can I buy that
- 7:49don't need tons of sunlight because my apartment doesn't get
- 7:54a lot of direct sunlight that doesn't need much maintenance
- 7:58because I'm lazy and they recommend they're like, oh,
- 8:02these plants and these plants. So I got 4 plants, 2 in each of
- 8:07these rectangular planter boxes and they're in pots.
- 8:11And there are two plants that I'm looking at right now that
- 8:14are still green and kind of doing OK.
- 8:18The other two plants have died. The fact that I kept them alive
- 8:22for I think I got them three years ago, something like 3
- 8:30years ago. The fact that I kept anything
- 8:32alive, plants actually, I can keep, I can keep other thing.
- 8:36I can keep mammals, actual animals alive if I have to.
- 8:41That's why I ducks it. But I don't know, OK.
- 8:42You know, like the fact that I kept these plants alive for
- 8:47about 3 years is actually an accomplishment.
- 8:52To be honest. I have a reminder to water the
- 8:56plants. I'm supposed to water them
- 8:59something like every other week, which is not a lot of work to be
- 9:05honest. I keep ignoring those reminders,
- 9:10I keep not watering the plants, and I've been so busy lately
- 9:16that two of the plants definitely are mostly dead by
- 9:24now. But I haven't even really
- 9:25noticed the plants. Honestly, I don't even know why
- 9:29I thought plants were a good idea.
- 9:30You know, during COVID a lot of people got tons of plants.
- 9:34I guess it was one of the things you can do in your house.
- 9:38I don't. For me I don't get the point of
- 9:46having plants so I don't even know why I got these.
- 9:52I think I just thought oh it would be nice to have real
- 9:55plants in the house for some. Not for any logical reason, I
- 10:02just thought oh it'd be it's like the core.
- 10:04It's just the core. Anyways last night I looked over
- 10:092 of the plants were mostly dead and I'm thinking could I be
- 10:13allergic to those dying plants? Like when certain plants die, do
- 10:18they is it releasing most spores or something?
- 10:24I don't know that those are the only organic things in the house
- 10:28that is dying. The only other organic things in
- 10:34the house is me and whatever is in the fridge, I guess.
- 10:42I guess there are microorganisms that are also organic, but
- 10:46that's a whole separate thing. But I thought maybe because I've
- 10:51neglected these plants so much the last few months, because
- 10:56I've been so busy, even when I wasn't that busy, it was really
- 11:01a flip of a coin whether I was going to water the plants when
- 11:04that reminder came up on my calendar.
- 11:06Really 5050, really just flip a coin.
- 11:08Maybe yes, maybe no. Depends on it.
- 11:12Depends on the direction of the wind that day, honestly.
- 11:16But I thought, these two plants are dying anyways.
- 11:21It's the only logical thing I could.
- 11:23It's only organic thing in here that might be detrimental to my
- 11:28health. It's some organic thing that's
- 11:30dying, right? That makes some logical sense.
- 11:34So last night, those two plants that were dying, I threw them
- 11:39into some garbage bags and I just threw them down the trash
- 11:42chute because I can't be, I can't be allergic to my own
- 11:48house. So that was last night.
- 11:52I do have three air purifiers in the house, electric air
- 11:59purifiers where there's a fan and it runs and it's supposed to
- 12:03purify the air. I got that because I have the
- 12:05hay fever and it does help with the pollen in the air.
- 12:10So I do keep it running. I have a big one for my living
- 12:15room, I have a medium sized one for my bedroom, and I have a
- 12:20small one for the office and the small one in the office.
- 12:24Actually, I haven't been using. It was just in the closet.
- 12:28But I I've been running, I've been running all three of them
- 12:33the last few days and it hasn't helped.
- 12:36So I'm thinking maybe it's just the plans.
- 12:39OK, well, welcome to the 1st 10 minutes of this podcast.
- 12:42It's just my allergy. I just, I just have to Yeah,
- 12:46it's, yeah, it is what it is. Anyways, one thing that has kept
- 12:51me really busy the last the last couple of weeks, week and 1/2 is
- 12:57I have, I am organizing has happened yet.
- 13:00So I'm still organizing it in a way.
- 13:02I'm organizing a photo shoot, like a proper photo shoot in a
- 13:07professional studio with real models that I'm paying money to
- 13:12show up, which is which was not on my bingo card for the year
- 13:21and it's not something I've ever done before.
- 13:23I did a little post about it on my Patreon.
- 13:26I was sitting on my couch last Friday trying to look for models
- 13:32to cast. So this is for my skin care line
- 13:36that's going to relaunch in like November or December.
- 13:41But I had this idea to feature actual people in some of the
- 13:51advertising content, like feature some models holding up
- 13:55the product. You know, if you, if you've seen
- 13:58any sort of cosmetics ad or website or anything like that, a
- 14:03lot of them feature a model holding up the product.
- 14:06So I thought I wanted some photos like that and you know,
- 14:13being a small company, I kind of have to do almost everything.
- 14:17So I've decided for the launch I'm going to do my own content
- 14:22creation. When I tried to launch the
- 14:24company last year, I wanted to farm.
- 14:28Well, I tried to do it myself and I think just the overall
- 14:32marketing strategy I didn't have a good grasp on.
- 14:36Now, I do have a marketing agency I'm working with, but for
- 14:40them to do everything, all the marketing stuff is very
- 14:43expensive. And working with them earlier in
- 14:46the year, I discovered that, you know, there's a specific
- 14:52aesthetic that I want for the brand and how the visual
- 14:59identity of the brand should be displayed and how it should come
- 15:06across and how it should reflect the values of the company.
- 15:10So I've decided it would be better for me to be responsible
- 15:17for the content creation instead of farming it out, even though I
- 15:20create so much content already. I remember one of the early
- 15:23meetings I have with the marketing agency early this year
- 15:26was I remember saying to them, I create so much content already
- 15:30for other things. If I have to create more
- 15:32content, I'm going to kill myself.
- 15:34I was just trying to be funny, but I was, it was rooted in
- 15:38truth. I wanted them to help create
- 15:42some of the content, you know, like the photos and videos that
- 15:45you must see on Instagram or in ads or whatever.
- 15:49I wanted them to do it because I was already creating so much
- 15:52other content. It's like, I don't want to
- 15:53create more content. But having worked with them on
- 15:57that little bit, paying them X amount of money for them to do
- 16:00the content creation in addition to like some other marketing
- 16:03things for this launch, I decided, you know what, I think
- 16:07I should do it. I'm going to farm some other
- 16:09marketing stuff out to them, but I'm going to take a chunk of my
- 16:13time for creating content. So part of that is this idea of
- 16:19having models post with the products.
- 16:24So that's happening this Saturday.
- 16:26It's kind of weird because I've never, I know nothing about a
- 16:34photo shoot. I don't know anything about
- 16:35models. I don't know anything about
- 16:37taking photos professionally. I don't know anything about
- 16:40organizing a photo shoot. Ad is very core.
- 16:45It's just paying some people to stand in front of a camera and
- 16:51hold up your product and getting a photographer to snap some
- 16:53photos and then give it, giving you some, giving you the
- 16:57finalized photos later on. At the core, it's a simple
- 17:03concept, right? And I mean, professional
- 17:07photographers do have a place. But honestly, in a way, on the
- 17:12flip side, how hard it is to just take a photo.
- 17:13People are taking photos on their phones all the time.
- 17:16Obviously, they're just, they're not professional photos.
- 17:19And I have a particular aesthetic that I'm going for for
- 17:23the photos. Having said that, we'll find out
- 17:28tomorrow. I will find out tomorrow.
- 17:30I find out the day that this podcast goes out on Thursday.
- 17:34So Wednesday nights I'll record this.
- 17:36Right now I'm the photographer. Right now I'm the photographer,
- 17:43but I'm talking to a professional photographer
- 17:46tomorrow to see if they're able to do it.
- 17:50I'm not going to go into all the nitty gritty details because
- 17:52then it gets very like businessy and dry.
- 17:55But yeah, there's a chance that I'm going to be playing the part
- 18:01of a quote UN quote professional photographer to take photos of
- 18:07like real models. The marketing agency sent over
- 18:11some recommendations for some models beside went up to them
- 18:18and said hey I'm looking for a couple more models to beside
- 18:22want about 5 or 6 models total and I told them I've got a few.
- 18:26Do you have some suggestions for like a couple more and they sent
- 18:29me some because they are a proper professional marketing
- 18:33agency. They sent over proper
- 18:36professional models, which I wasn't that cost quite a bit
- 18:45more money. So that's where I got the idea.
- 18:49You know what, let me just go on Instagram and see what I can
- 18:51find. Because my, my idea was let's
- 18:55find some more junior models. Because in my head I was
- 19:00thinking it's not a difficult gig.
- 19:04We don't need the models to post in any weird kind of poses.
- 19:10They're just going to be standing there holding the
- 19:13products up and out, want them to, you know, try out some
- 19:18different facial expressions. So in my head, I was thinking,
- 19:22this doesn't require a high level of modelling experience.
- 19:27We don't need, we don't need models that have years and years
- 19:31of experience. It's hard to explain, but in my
- 19:35head, this idea of what the models should look like, I'm
- 19:40very good at visualizing something in my head.
- 19:42I can visualize the type of the visual type of models that I
- 19:49want, even though I think it'd be nearly impossible for me to
- 19:52describe it. It's one of those things where
- 19:56when I see someone that fits, I'll know.
- 20:00That's about as close as it gets to be with me and you describe
- 20:03it. And I wanted a variety of.
- 20:06Both masculine presenting and feminine presenting people.
- 20:12And I do have 5 models that have confirmed they're booked,
- 20:18confirmed times are set. They're going to show up on
- 20:20Saturday. I rented this pretty nice studio
- 20:25in Los Angeles and it's from the photos so I can tell it's it's
- 20:30pretty giant. It's got a special type of a
- 20:33screen that have a particular term for, I don't remember, but
- 20:36it's basically a giant white screen.
- 20:42It's not just like a screen that you pull down like for a
- 20:44projector in high school, basically this massive wall
- 20:48that's all white and it's designed so that it doesn't
- 20:51create any shadows. Yeah.
- 20:54So we're going to have that. And I was just talking to some
- 20:57of the models about makeup, at least one area where I know
- 21:01something about. So yeah, it's something I've
- 21:05never done before to organize a professional model shoot and
- 21:10have to do the model release and like find the people and then
- 21:15get a studio and then all that kind of stuff.
- 21:18So it's actually very exciting. It's actually very, very
- 21:21exciting. So for my Patreon subscribers,
- 21:25in the uncut episode of this podcast that comes out just for
- 21:29my Patreon subscribers this weekend, I'm going to be
- 21:31recording that after the photo shoot session on Saturday.
- 21:41In that photo shoot in that uncut episode, I'm going to like
- 21:46give you the uncut of my experience trying to run my own
- 21:51photo shoot. And then I'll let everyone know
- 21:54on that uncut episode whether I was a photographer or if I end
- 21:58up being able to get a professional photographer.
- 22:01It freaked me out at the beginning for a little bit to
- 22:04think, oh, I might need to do like take the photos myself.
- 22:09I've got a decent camera but like I don't have any
- 22:11rofessional photographer experts.
- 22:13My expertise is in videos because I make tons of videos.
- 22:18But even then a professional videographer will probably be
- 22:20able to take better videos than me because I'm just like
- 22:24self-taught. I do YouTube and the type of
- 22:27videos I do aren't always. There's very a lot of different
- 22:31types of videos stylistically that one can take.
- 22:35And that's the same for photos, right?
- 22:37You have photographers that specialize in different types of
- 22:39photography, could be event photography, travel photography,
- 22:43nature photography for weddings. They're all very different.
- 22:48So one type of photographer is not never going to be able to do
- 22:52another type of photography very well.
- 22:56But I got over it and I just wanted to keep it fun.
- 22:59I've been trying to not label everything in my head that I
- 23:04have to do as, oh, it's work. It's A to do item that I need to
- 23:09just cross off my list. I'm just trying to enjoy some of
- 23:13the things I have to do. Anyways, I talked about this a
- 23:15little bit in a previous episode of the podcast last week.
- 23:18So it's working pretty well. And yeah, I was going into it
- 23:25this morning thinking, OK, that studio's booked.
- 23:28All the models have agreed to do it, nailed down the dates and
- 23:33times for everyone. And yeah, we're, we're going to
- 23:37do it. So we'll see.
- 23:40If you're interested to know everything, come join me on my
- 23:43Patreon, get access to those uncut episodes.
- 23:47And yeah, just just for $3 a month, you get access to every
- 23:51uncut episode that has ever been recorded.
- 23:55I think we're up to about episode 38 or 39.
- 23:58I mean, 39 went up last week and then episode 40 I think is the
- 24:03uncut that's coming up this weekend.
- 24:05And oh also what's special for this weekend is I'm having my
- 24:10Opa's live stream because my top tier Patreon subscribers, that's
- 24:15the Opa's tier. They get a monthly live stream
- 24:19live with me. And we're doing that at 11:00 AM
- 24:23Pacific this Sunday. And yeah, it's exclusive to my

- 24:38like a month because you don't. Not only will you get the uncut
- 24:43episodes, you also get all the travel vlogs.
- 24:46Whenever I travel, I'll vlog. We are uploading the travel
- 24:50vlogs from my trip to Asia in Bangkok and Singapore.
- 24:55I did a trip in August and that's a multi part.
- 24:58All the travel logs and multiple parts.
- 25:01That part 5 just went up this past Tuesday.
- 25:05I have one, maybe two more parts to go.
- 25:08But if you subscribe and say OPA you will get the live stream
- 25:12this Sunday. If you subscribe before Sunday
- 25:14morning then you can join in for the live stream and you can also
- 25:18watch every single travel vlog that I've had.
- 25:21How many travel vlog videos? I think there's probably about
- 25:2620 something 30 because every trip I did the one for EDC, for
- 25:32example, I did and I did one for the cruise, the party cruise in
- 25:35February, for example. Yeah.
