- 1:37It's time now for Johnny Doller. Missus Armen Kennedy, you called my home
- 1:44at the Dollar Oh yes, Missus Kennedy. I'm with Universal Adjustment Bureau.
- 1:48We're investigating the matter of James Lansing's death. You're what, We're investigating your
- 1:53brother's death before we take action on your claim as as beneficiary. Under the
- 1:56circumstances, we have to do this, Missus Kennedy, I'd like to talk
- 2:00to you about it if I may. How would you like to talk to
- 2:01my lawyer, Missus Dollar, Sure, if you think it's necessary, I'd
- 2:06rather talk to you first. Why, Well, frankly, the insurance company
- 2:09isn't satisfied that this is a legitimate claim. You mean you're not satisfied?
- 2:14All right, then I'm not satisfied and I represent the company in this matter.
- 2:17Look, we won't get anywhere this way, Missus Kennedy, if you
- 2:21just tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures The Man
- 2:36with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance insurance Investigator as truly Johnny Dollar.
- 2:52Expense Accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Tucson, Arizona,
- 2:55to the Universal Adjustment Bureau Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 3:00an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the lansing fraud fifty thousand dollars worth
- 3:08expense account continued Item six ten dollars. Car rettle to get to Catalina Vista,
- 3:14where Arlene Kennedy maintains a fifty five thousand dollars home. It was a
- 3:17warm, sunny day, incredibly clear. I enjoyed it, and I drive.
- 3:22However, I can't say I enjoyed Arlene Kennedy. That's as far as
- 3:28you need to come. You must be the mister dollar I spoke to on
- 3:31the phone. You didn't get the idea on the phone. I'll tell it
- 3:35to you again. I don't want to talk to you now. Please get
- 3:37away from my home. We'll have to talk sometime. I don't think so.
- 3:39I know so, Missus Kennedy, I must ask you to take your
- 3:44briefcase and get out of him. Mister Dollar. Now, I'm sorry you
- 3:46feel that way. Look, my brother Jim drank himself to death. I
- 3:51don't know why. I just know he did it. He's dead. I'm
- 3:53his beneficiary. Why don't you pay me what you own me? We will,
- 3:57Missus Kennedy, if the circumstances are right. So far, though,
- 4:00we have reasonable doubts and this investigation is for your benefit as much as it
- 4:03is ours. I can hardly believe that when we've satisfied ourselves one way or
- 4:06the other, your claim will be settled. The whole situation's cut and dry.
- 4:10I'm afraid it isn't. It's a dollar. I've had enough of this.
- 4:14I'll turn the matter over to my attorneys. Missus Kennedy. I don't
- 4:16carry this briefcase to impress anybody, but I thought it might interest you.
- 4:20I haven't had a copy of the physical examination your brother took two years ago
- 4:25when he applied for his insurance policy. I have a copy of the coroners
- 4:28the report, and the results of the autopsy. I don't care what you
- 4:30have. Then maybe you'd just be interested in the conclusion. We have to
- 4:34discredit one item or the other. That's why we can't take any action on
- 4:38your claim yet. Goodbye. Wait, what is good you want to know?
- 4:44I haven't seen my brother in well over two years, three years.
- 4:46I can't tell you a thing about him. Were you on good terms with
- 4:49him? Of course I was. I was the only one he had in
- 4:51the world. He left me his insurance money, didn't he Did he leave
- 4:55you anything else? He didn't have anything else. I understand there was a
- 4:58trust in the family he spent is a long time ago. I understand you're
- 5:01a widow, Missus Kennedy. I don't see what bearing that you have any
- 5:04dependence, no children, that's what you mean. The money from the policy
- 5:08would have gone to you alone. Let me correct you. The money will
- 5:12come to me alone. I don't know what you people think you can do
- 5:14trying to weeezle out of this payment. But I've already spoken with my attorneys
- 5:16and they've advised me to sue for an immediate settlement and damages. Perhaps I
- 5:20can save you some fees and your attorney some time. Missus Kennedy, Where
- 5:25can I contact them? Never mind, you'll find out soon enough. I
- 5:28hope you won't allow them to go so far as a courtroom without speaking to
- 5:30me. We'll see about that too. I don't need your advice. Oh
- 5:32look, I'm going to tell you exactly what I'd tell them. You can
- 5:34pass it on to them. Your brother could have died quietly in his bed
- 5:39one night, and any doctor would have pronounced him a heart failure, and
- 5:42your claim would have been honored without delay. But James Lansing made the mistake
- 5:46of dropping dead on a public street, and the police took over and before
- 5:48he was properly identified and autopsy had been performed. And I intend to sue
- 5:51the city for that kind of liberty. They had no right there. They
- 5:54had every right an unknown man dead on the street from unknown causes. And
- 5:58I don't be childish. Was of that a tupsy? We know your brother
- 6:00couldn't possibly have passed an insurance examination two years ago or ten years ago,
- 6:05not with the amount of bad health heath collected. But he did pass it.
- 6:09The insurance company accepted him as a client. They issued a policy,
- 6:12and you can't deny it. Jim came to me the day after he took
- 6:15out that policy and told me I was his nifisy. You said you hadn't
- 6:18seen him for well over two years. He took the exam a year ago,
- 6:21last July. All right, I saw him at one time. Look
- 6:26only it right on the line, Missus Kennedy. We don't think your brother
- 6:30ever took that physical examination. What someone else went up to doctor Mayhood's office
- 6:34and took it for him, someone who could pass it. Missus Kennedy,
- 6:38We aren't fools, and we don't like to be fooled, and we're going
- 6:41to find out who that someone was and how it was done. We're used
- 6:45to all sorts of tricks in this business, and all sorts of bluffing tool.
- 6:47You can sue us for a settlement. You can sue us all over
- 6:49the place with what I have right now. I'd be willing to meet you
- 6:53in a courtroom. I'm talking facts to you, missus Kennedy, and I
- 6:57wish you'd talk him to me. Get out of here. Get out of
- 6:59here, you cheap snooper. Before I called the police and have you thrown
- 7:01out some more expenses. I had them seven six dollars a lunch, but
- 7:09Jim Cutter myself repassed the kream Giant. Thanks. Well, what do you
- 7:15think, Jim? This is Kennedy. Yeah, it's hard to say.
- 7:19She's gonna make it as tough as she can for us, judging from her
- 7:21attitude towards you this morning. How does the Commission feel? Well, I
- 7:25feel very badly that something like this come up. They requested us to act
- 7:29with discretion and to act swiftly. They're certainly the entire matter can be settled
- 7:31without legal action. Are they going to cooperate? Aren't going to do anything
- 7:38until we show cause? They did mention that their action will take place in
- 7:42ten days, So that means we've got ten days to write such a statement.
- 7:45Tell me what you've learned about missus Kennedy. Well, she was a
- 7:47widow five years ago. Or husband was a lawyer. He left her forty
- 7:51thousand insurance of fifteen thousand debts her family, the lancing has had money at
- 7:57one time. And also that she gets one half of one to the one
- 8:00percent of an oil company out on the coast. It phays her about seven
- 8:03fifty. She managed to clear her house out in Catalina Vista and drive a
- 8:07Cadillac. But she could use fifty thousand dollars. Of course, she could
- 8:09use fifty thousand dollars. Everybody could, Johnny, what are you going to
- 8:15start on the insurance agent, Hillary Franks? I've already started. If I
- 8:20know my Missus Kennedy, she won't call it a lawyer or anybody else.
- 8:22Right now. She'll talk to her agent, mister H. Franks, and
- 8:26he'll have to come to what. I don't have to go to him,
- 8:28Johnny, When you buy a radio and it goes bad, you called up
- 8:31the store. They didn't manufacture the set, but you complain to them.
- 8:35Just the same same thing with insurance. You don't call up the company.
- 8:39You caught up the agent who sold it to you. Hillary Frank has to
- 8:41call me Jim, just to look legitimate. I hope you're right, kiddo.
- 8:52After lunch, I went back to my hotel room and open up the
- 8:54file Jim Carter had collected on Hillary Franks. Hillary Franks stage fifty six,
- 9:00college graduate, married, two children, wife, deceased, income good.
- 9:03No record of any kind for any offense had he thought up by Worldwide Insurance
- 9:07officials. The seventeen years with the company started god, he started as an
- 9:13agent when he was thirty nine. This is Henry Frank's, mister duller.
- 9:18Yes, sir, I understand your account. A little investigation for the home
- 9:22office. I wonder if we could have dinner. As a matter of fact,
- 9:24I was going to call you, mister Franks. The policy I'm working
- 9:26on was written by you. Yes, I understand that. Missus Kennedy,
- 9:31the beneficiary called me today seemed very upset. I thought perhaps we could discuss
- 9:35it over dinner. Anything wrong with right now at your office. What kind
- 9:39of thing. I suppose you're a mister Dollar. Yes, Maria, that's
- 10:03my sacred to miss over to Dawn for the day. Sorry you had to
- 10:07wait so long. Mister Hillary Franks looked straight Life Insurance from the top of
- 10:11his iron gray hair at the tips of his polish brown shoes. He had
- 10:16a quiet manner about him and a pair of large brown eyes that look wide
- 10:18open and honest. Come in, give me in, mister Dollers. Thank
- 10:22you very much for coming over. I was surprised when missus Kennedy called me
- 10:28about this and matter today, surprised to learn that you were in town.
- 10:31Where are you? She said, you'd been over to her home this morning?
- 10:35That's right, Well, just what is this all about? We have
- 10:39reason to believe missus Kennedy is a party to an attempted fraud. Mister Franks,
- 10:43I gathered it was something like that. I've been writing policies for Worldwide
- 10:48Insurance for seventeen years, mister Dollar, and this is the first time anything
- 10:50like this has ever happened on one of them. I believe you're mister Franks
- 10:54and your record, but there's a first time for everything. Yes, I'm
- 10:58here to find out all I can about the circumstances under which you sold the
- 11:01policy to Missus Kennedy's brother. Nothing unusual about it, mister Della. I
- 11:05think there was. James Lansing was a bachelor. He lived in a fairly
- 11:09nice apartment on the other side of town. No dependence. And what made
- 11:15James Lansing a prospect for life insurance, mister Franks, Well, it's more
- 11:20of a personal thing, really. I suppose my wife and I were interested
- 11:24in buying a home a couple of years ago. There was one we liked
- 11:26in Cataline a Vista. The real estate agent happened to be James Lansing.
- 11:31That's how we first became acquainted. Huh. Missus Franks and I saw Lansing
- 11:37oo two three times at dinner together, you know, and I managed to
- 11:41sell him the policy. I understood he was an engineer, he had been
- 11:43at one time in Los Angeles, and he was only engaged in the real
- 11:46estate business here a very short time. Really mattered for a few months,
- 11:52I see. Did he do very well at it? I don't think so.
- 11:56I don't think he worked hard at it. You see, he had
- 11:58a fairly comfortable income him from money left by his father. You didn't buy
- 12:01the house from him? No too much, No, missus. Franks died
- 12:07rather suddenly about that time, and I had no need to buy home.
- 12:11But out of the association you interested lancing and buying insurance from him. He
- 12:13is What kind of a man was he? What do you mean? Well,
- 12:18just your opinion, mister Franks. Well, just a client, mister
- 12:22Dalla. I looked at him and treats him just the same as in the
- 12:24other client. But you saw him socially several times, had dinner with him.
- 12:28Do you do that with all your clients? I might I remember he
- 12:33was trying to sell me something too sure? How do he look, hail,
- 12:39fam I mayciate it? What? Oh he looked fine to me.
- 12:43Did he drink much? Oh? I don't recall. Think it's important.
- 12:50Well, I don't recall, then I'll recall for you. Mister Franks,
- 12:54Lancing did drink a lot on those occasions. As a matter of fact,
- 12:58he was soaked up most of the time. That's not true, mister d
- 13:01You know as well as I do. He was an alcoholic in Los Angeles,
- 13:03and he was an alcoholic here in Tucson. He died of malnutrition,
- 13:07a direct result of his alcoholic condition. I'm not a doctor. I had
- 13:11no way of ascertaining that you don't have to be a doctor to smell booze.
- 13:15Mister Franks, did you ever meet his beneficiary? Do you mean his
- 13:18sister, Missus Kennedy. No? No, I think I told you she'd
- 13:24telephoned me today. Never met her at all. No, mister Franks.
- 13:31I'm going to leave you for a while, and I want you to think
- 13:33about all we've discussed. When I come back, I might ask you the
- 13:37same questions again, and I'll expect some different answers. Anything you say,
- 13:46mister Hillary Franks seventeen years insurance broker was a bad liar. He was worse
- 14:03than that. He was a stupid, awkward, unprepared liar with no idea
- 14:09of what he was up against. He knew I was going to get him
- 14:11and get him good, and he didn't know what to do about it.
- 14:16I almost felt sorry for him. Johnny Doller, Jim Carter, Johnny,
- 14:39Hi, how'd you make out with Hillary Franks? The agents have sold the
- 14:41policy. He's worried, he's scared, and he's already doing everything wrong.
- 14:46I left him about an hour ago to think things over. Ah, Missus
- 14:48Kennedy's fighting back. What do you mean Her lawyers served notice that it was
- 14:52an hour ago to pay up on the policy or else just a bluff.
- 14:56Yeah, but this wasn't. She got a corn order and made the coroner
- 14:58release her this body. She took it right to the crematorium. Exhibit A
- 15:03is a pile of ashes. By now, our next step is to contact
- 15:05the State Insurance Commission and have them order us to pay off for show cause.
- 15:09We'll have to act fast. Maybe I'd better go back to see mister
- 15:13Hillary Frank's expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Tucson, Arizona,
- 15:28to the Universal Adjustment Bureau Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut. The following
- 15:31is an accounting I've expended Juris during my investigation of the lansing fraud. Fifty
- 15:35thousand and by now I was sure it was frauds expense account out of number
- 15:43eight five dollars stenographic services. I dictated a hastily composed letter to the State
- 15:48Insurance Commission advising them that Worldwide was withholding payment on the claim of Missus Arlene
- 15:52Kennedy, pending a complete investigation of the circumstances of our brother's deck. I
- 15:58enclosed copies of the origin physical examination and the coroner's autopsy findings, pointing out
- 16:03that, in our opinion, it was impossible for James Lansing to have successfully
- 16:07passed an insurance examination in the first place. I enclosed copies of statements from
- 16:11the examining physician, Doctor Mayhood, and the members of his office staff,
- 16:15all of whom were unable to identify the body of James Lansing. Expensive con
- 16:23item nine fifty two cents postage. I sent the letter to the State Capitol
- 16:27special delivery and the hope it would arrive there before missus Kennedy's lawyers took the
- 16:32anticipated action. After that, I drove back over to the office of Hillary
- 16:36Franks. He was the same as I left him an hour before, a
- 16:38little shaken, but still unable to realize quite what was happening. Yes,
- 16:44mister Dillon, mister Franks, I wonder if you've got anything to say to
- 16:48me. Nothing, mister Diler. I was hoping you might want to make
- 16:52a statement about what missus Kennedy's attempting to defraud your insurance company. I don't
- 16:57know what you're talking about, mister Dollar. I sold her brother an insurance
- 17:02policy. I don't even know, Missus Kennedy. There are a lot of
- 17:04things about this. You say you don't know. You want me to lay
- 17:08it on the line if you'd like. All right, someone else had to
- 17:14take that physical examination for James Lansing two years ago. I think you are
- 17:18arranged for someone to do it, or you helped Missus Kennedy arrange it.
- 17:22I think James Lansing was insured on that basis. I think he was insured
- 17:26with a clean intent to defraud. Lansing's health wouldn't permit that kind of insurance.
- 17:30Right now, our Los Angeles men are looking into Lansing's activities there Somewhere
- 17:36along the line, they're going to turn up a medical history that will show
- 17:37Lansing was already dying when he came to Arizona two years ago. Now,
- 17:42do you have anything to say as to Frank's no? I think it being
- 17:47very foolish if it isn't clear how serious this can be with you. It's
- 17:51noted that you were arranged for Lansing's physical examination. There's nothing incriminating in that.
- 17:55How well do you know doctor Mayhood slightly? The physicians supposed to be
- 18:00an impartial Third parton when a client has to be examined by a physician for
- 18:04insurance purposes. I sent him to doctor Mayor. That's all doctor me who
- 18:10sends me a Christmas card to the year I sent James Lancing to him,
- 18:14just like any other, Just like any other. Oh you worry me,
- 18:17mister Franks. You don't object to my questions or get ruffled when you're caught
- 18:21lying. I've given you time to think and time to make a statement regarding
- 18:25your part in this matter. I resentful this, mister Doner. I've been
- 18:30an insurance broker for a good long time and no one has ever questioned my
- 18:33integrity. And I think that's what you've been banking on, mister Franks.
- 18:36Your reputation, well, I've been questioning it ever since I got here,
- 18:40and I still questioned it. You couldn't have known James Lancing without being aware
- 18:44of his drinking habits. I'm sorry for you, Franks, but there had
- 18:48to be collusion here with a beneficiary, Missus Kennedy, and you're the logical
- 18:52party will arrange for someone else to take that examination for lancing somebody who could
- 18:56pass it. I've given you a chance to talk to me, but you
- 18:59refuse. Now we'll see how you like talking to the police about it.
- 19:02Well, I'm going to swear out a warrant for your arrest. Are going
- 19:04to charge you with attempted thought and collusion, and I'm gonna swear out a
- 19:07warrant for missus Kennedy too. You're going to check hole. In the three
- 19:22minutes it took me to recover from the blow from the paperweight and get my
- 19:25break in side of me and my pet under me. Hillary Franks was well
- 19:27out of the way and out of sight at that time. Jim PRETI walked
- 19:30in, Hey, what happened to you? Hillary Franks? We get scared.
- 19:37He swung a paperweight at me and pet it. If he's playing rough,
- 19:40I don't want to take any chances. No, I'll put that phone
- 19:41down. He hasn't admitted anything yet. S Marking you on the side of
- 19:45the head is admittance enough for me. No, I want a statement.
- 19:48I think I can get one. You have to find him first, and
- 19:49he's running. He won't run far, Jim, but makes you so sure?
- 19:53Hillary Franks doesn't know how to run. It was exactly three o'clock in
- 20:03the afternoon. Then at three twenty five I was back out and kettling up
- 20:07Vista, knocking on a familiar door, and the same familiar things began to
- 20:11happen all over again. What do you want? I'm here to tell you
- 20:18about the trouble you're in, Missus Kennedy. Hillary Franks gave it all away?
- 20:22Dave what away? Who's Hillary Franks? What are you talking about about
- 20:25that insurance policy that was written up and issued in your brother's name. You're
- 20:29the one who stood to gain most by your brother's death after having someone else
- 20:32taken insurance examination for him. But you had to have help to pull it
- 20:36off. Hillary Franks helped you. For what reason or how you got him
- 20:40to do it? I don't know, but I do know a man with
- 20:42a seventeen year record as insurance broker is ruined. You're crazy. I don't
- 20:47know anybody named Hillary Franks. Now get out. Oh stop it, will
- 20:49you? I told him how he stood in this matter a half hour agoe.
- 20:52He shocked me with a paper away and beat it. I've had about
- 20:55enough. He isn't gonna run far, principally because he doesn't know how to
- 20:59run, Missus Kennedy. He'll cool off and he'll begin thinking about all this
- 21:03business in a new light. A few minutes to go, it dawned on
- 21:07him what he'd done. He kicked his whole lifetime right out the window.
- 21:10He'd been found out. He's lost all around, and he's going to be
- 21:14mad about that. And you're the one he's going to be mad at because
- 21:17you got him into it. I told you I don't know anybody named Hilary
- 21:21Franks. That's the last time i'll say it. He'll probably want to kid
- 21:25you, missus Kennedy, what I said. He'll think about all this and
- 21:30he'll probably want to kill you. Do we talk now. I don't see
- 21:36why I've done nothing wrong. What did you get to take that physical for
- 21:40your brother? I don't know what you're talking about. It got your brother
- 21:41drunk enough to sign the insurance papers, didn't show you. I had nothing
- 21:45to do with my brother taking out life insurance and naming me his beneficiary.
- 21:48That was his business. Now that he's dead, it's my position to receive
- 21:51the payments. That's all, okay, Missus Kennedy, we'll get it all
- 21:57from Hillary Franks. Yes, why don't you do that? In the meantime,
- 22:02I hope you sleep well knowing what you've done. You'll never be able
- 22:07to prove any of these things you're saying. Never. And for twenty four
- 22:15hours it looked as if missus Kennedy might have been right. There was no
- 22:18way to involve her unless we had a statement from Hillary Frank's and he was
- 22:22still missing. I set up a watch on missus Kennedy's house and Jim Karda
- 22:26kept an eye on Hillary Frank's place. About ten o'clock that night, Jim
- 22:30Krda to up Hi, Hi an the action. Now, missus Kennedy has
- 22:45been in all the night. No one showed up. How about Frank's place?
- 22:49Well, no one there when I left an hour ago. You'd think
- 22:53he'd come back for a suitcase or some money or something. Yeah, Johnny,
- 23:03I call him the police. They have a worldwide I filed charges of
- 23:08attempted fraud and collusion against him. They usued have warn a half an hour
- 23:12ago. He's on an APB and all the local bulletins. Well, I
- 23:17suppose you had to do it him. Yeah, we'll let the police analyst
- 23:21part from now, how about missus Kennedy. They'll keep an eye on her
- 23:25too. Did you find any charges against her? Not yet. We need
- 23:29a statement from Frank's Jim. Yeah, what would you do if you were
- 23:34Hilary Franks? I'll try to grab an airplane, maybe Godana, the Gallas
- 23:41across the border. Look up, a friend burows some money, they get
- 23:47out and keep traveling. What he won't do anything like that, won't he?
- 23:52You'll find himself a place to sit down and think. In the end,
- 23:56the cops won't find him. He'll find us one a bit. By
- 24:06the next morning, the police had still been unable to locate Hillary Franks.
- 24:10I left Jim Canter in the room on a long distance called in the insurance
- 24:12Commission, advising them of the events up to date. Drove out to Hillary
- 24:15Frank's office. I noticed two police officers loitering across the street as I walked
- 24:19in the front door. Yes, how do you do? Are you another
- 24:27policeman? No? No, I'm not. Have they been bothering you alone?
- 24:32If you aren't a policeman and you know all about this, what do
- 24:34you want? I want to help mister Franks? If I can. I'm
- 24:37Johnny Dollar, Universal Adjustment Bureau. You're a secretary, yes. How long
- 24:42have you worked for him? Twelve years? Do you like him? He's
- 24:48always been a fine man. I don't believe any of these things about him,
- 24:51and I don't think I think, he said, Maria, Maria Vanno.
- 24:56Maria, I'm not going to ask you any questions about mister Franks.
- 25:00I know enough about him now for my purposes. The rest he can tell
- 25:03me himself, Maria. I may be able to help him stay out of
- 25:07jail. I can do that if I talk to him. My name's Johnny
- 25:11Dollar. I'm at the Pioneer Hotel. Remember that, whether he's phoned you
- 25:17yet or not, a man like that's going to need help money. I'm
- 25:21not asking you if he's contacted you, but listen to me carefully. If
- 25:25he does phone you or contact you in any way, ask him to phone
- 25:29me. If you ever respected him, or if you want to help him
- 25:33now, please ask him to telephone me. Thanks. I drove back to
- 25:42the hotel and waited for results. Another twelve hours went by. Hillary Franks
- 25:48was still missing, and missus Kennedy was still refusing to admit anything find me
- 25:52about eleven o'clock that night. My phone, right, Johnny Dollar at all,
- 26:00This is Hillary Franks. Where are you? Never mind? Tala?
- 26:04They know all about me back at the Home office. I suppose yes.
- 26:10I'd like to explain some things to you so you can pass them on.
- 26:14I'd like the people back there to knew why I did it well before I
- 26:18leave town. You won't get far. The police are looking for you.
- 26:22I can get away, all right, mister Franks. Worldwide doesn't want to
- 26:26prosecute the notoriety be bad for them. If you'd make a statement, sign
- 26:30it, I think I could talk them into dropping the home matter. Maybe
- 26:33we'd better get together. Come on over. Oh no, no, I'm
- 26:37not that crazy. Do you know how to get to the send? Have
- 26:41your mission? I can find it in fifteen minutes, right and ta,
- 26:47Yeah, it's right out in the open. If you bring the police,
- 26:52I'll use it. I bought one this morning. All right, mister Franks.
