• 0:57
Speaker 1: hope we were saved, But hope that is seen is
• 1:01
Speaker 1: no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?
• 1:05
Speaker 1: But if we hope for what we do not yet have,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: we wait for it patiently. Romans 8, 24-25 I had
• 1:16
Speaker 1: the old cordless phone in my hand ready to punch
• 1:18
Speaker 1: the numbers. I was calling my mom on a normal
• 1:21
Speaker 1: Thursday morning. Then I realized what I was doing. Mom
• 1:25
Speaker 1: wouldn't be picking up on the other side. She no
• 1:28
Speaker 1: longer lived on this planet. Her home was in heaven.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: I remember standing there in my little kitchen and the
• 1:35
Speaker 1: sorrow of it washing over me all over again. The
• 1:39
Speaker 1: heaviness of her being gone and me stuck, waiting. I
• 1:43
Speaker 1: knew I'd see my mother again, but time stood as
• 1:46
Speaker 1: a strong enemy between that moment and the present. Heaven
• 1:50
Speaker 1: felt very far away. The distance between what had been
• 1:55
Speaker 1: and what would be was a thick darkness I could
• 1:58
Speaker 1: never see through. If you've ever stood in a moment
• 2:02
Speaker 1: like that, then you understand what I'm attempting to describe.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: It's the reality of knowing there's something you'll never be
• 2:10
Speaker 1: able to fix or hurry. It doesn't always feel like
• 2:14
Speaker 1: a dramatic moment. Sometimes it's just a break in everyday life,
• 2:18
Speaker 1: knowing that what you're waiting for is something you cannot see.
• 2:23
Speaker 1: Romans 8 is one of my favorite passages in the Bible.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: Paul logically discerns who hopes for what you already have.
• 2:31
Speaker 1: We often think, well, if I could just get a
• 2:33
Speaker 1: glimpse of God's good plan, then I'd have some hope.
• 2:37
Speaker 1: Paul tells us in this chapter that it's actually the opposite.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: Hope that is seen is not hope at all. If
• 2:44
Speaker 1: you can already see it, you don't need hope. The
• 2:48
Speaker 1: kind of hope Paul describes is the kind that that
• 2:51
Speaker 1: sits with you in the dark, reminding you of God's
• 2:55
Speaker 1: unwavering love you can hold on to even when heaven
• 2:58
Speaker 1: feels far away. No matter how deep the darkness, God's
• 3:04
Speaker 1: love is hope you can cling to. Jesus sits with
• 3:08
Speaker 1: us in the dark. What I've come to understand is
• 3:12
Speaker 1: that the sense we need most in the dark is
• 3:16
Speaker 1: the sense of his presence. Knowing in our heart of
• 3:20
Speaker 1: hearts that that he is with us and will never
• 3:23
Speaker 1: leave us or forsake us. Hope is not off in
• 3:28
Speaker 1: the distance. Hope is standing by the phone in the kitchen,
• 3:32
Speaker 1: reminding us that we are never alone, even in our
• 3:36
Speaker 1: darkest moments. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, you understand the weight
• 3:43
Speaker 1: of this moment I'm holding. Though heaven feels far away,
• 3:47
Speaker 1: you are with me in the everyday moments of life.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: I confess that in the darkness, all I want is
• 3:53
Speaker 1: to see. I want light shining on a timeline and
• 3:57
Speaker 1: proof of what lies ahead. When I can't see that,
• 4:00
Speaker 1: I think hope has failed. But waiting is not a
• 4:05
Speaker 1: sign that you've forgotten me. Waiting is the very place
• 4:09
Speaker 1: where you've shown up so that I can get to
• 4:12
Speaker 1: know you more deeply. Help me, Lord, to sense that
• 4:16
Speaker 1: you are here. I don't need all the answers today.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: I simply need to trust you in the dark and
• 4:23
Speaker 1: hold on to the hope you alone can offer. In Jesus' name, amen.
