- 0:07November 25th, 1974, the Pittsburgh Steelers faced the New Orleans Saints at Tulane Stadium
- 0:13in Louisiana during week 11 of the 1974 NFL season. Tulane Stadium, also known as the
- 0:19Sugar Bowl, was home of the Saints prior to the Superdome, which opened in 1975. The
- 0:25Saints entered the game with a 4-6 record, but the Steelers, led by head coach Chuck
- 0:29Noll, had seven wins and were marching their way through the season towards the first of
- 0:34the four Super Bowl wins in the next six seasons. This is the local Pittsburgh radio broadcast,
- 0:39featuring legendary announcers Myron Cope and Jack Fleming.
- 0:42And the first quarter, Steelers football will be brought to you by Pittsburgh-Nicholas Bank.
- 0:56Vigilante, Snowballs for Memphis, White Numeras, Goldfans and Black Helmets, New Orleans, probable
- 1:18White Jerseys, Dios and Gold Helmets
- 1:22receiver running
- 1:26product the beer here tonight is a daughter Jerry Bradshaw
- 1:30Five-year veteran quarterback to the theater from Louisiana Tech
- 1:34Where he was just something else?
- 1:37And not with us ball club tonight
- 1:39Hospitalized in Pittsburgh the Frenchman the Calipers
- 1:43Frenchie Fuqua and
- 1:45Justin Pearson two outstanding running backs and both of them hospitalized following surgery the Vine Providence Hospital
- 1:51Hospital and we do with them a very speedy recovery very quickly running over the defensive unit tonight for
- 1:58New Orleans
- 1:59some starts at left-end
- 2:01Bob Pollard will start at left tackle
- 2:04Dillon Moore and right tackle and Joe Owen at right end the linebackers left to right Jim Merlo
- 2:09Go better feel and Wayne Coleman
- 2:12any Jackson and Vivian Lee on the corners
- 2:15The strong safety will be Johnny fuller and the free safety Tom Myers goes back after an ankle injury
- 2:21And out tonight Jerry Moore was injured in the avada point
- 2:25Ray a second-year man from Arizona to their core of safety men
- 2:29Byron cope is on hand tonight as they have the symbolic copy of the coin
- 2:33He'll update you on late factors involved in this ballgame in New Orleans
- 2:37Well one right factor is Pat Holmes or arrowhead old to the now for fit preferred to be called
- 2:43He was laid down in the hospital with pneumonia of course a few days ago of mild touch of pneumonia and
- 2:51Fast cannot be expected to be a top strength tonight
- 2:55Just how much technical and then to use them remains to be seen
- 2:59But arrowhead Holmes did tell me upon arriving here in New Orleans yesterday that he still had some congestion in his
- 3:06chest and
- 3:07Felt a little weak so perhaps normal simply try to spot him tonight, but in any event
- 3:14is the backup man will be Steve Burnett and
- 3:18We pride now for the national anthem
- 3:48Oh
- 4:18Oh
- 4:35And so as I was explaining that
- 4:38Sackle situation on a defense of mine is
- 4:41Problematical deeper net filling in for arrowhead home and tackle is probably at a position for which he is better suited than where he
- 4:50To have to fill his defensive end he is listed of course as a backup man at both positions
- 4:56I go on end so if the Steelers do need him it's fortunate
- 5:01I would think that it's at the tackle position where he'll play
- 5:04I do think he's a little better suited for that than he would be for defensive end and
- 5:09And as I said, it's just anybody's guess how much
- 5:13Head homes will play tonight. He doesn't know have congestion and he had that viral pneumonia
- 5:19And he cannot be expected to be a hundred percent
- 5:23Jack
- 5:24Thanks for going to kick off left to right and don't look hard
- 5:27It was injured in that automobile accident a 510 202 pounder from Arkansas will kick off left to right
- 5:33He Davis and no blood are deep for the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 5:37Oh
- 5:38Speed up at the 35 yard line below us to our left
- 5:43And the kickoff will carry left to right across your radio dial and McFarlane is ready to move forward
- 5:49Here he comes taking it off
- 5:51And it is him over and down the blood of the floor of the far side of over the 10 of the 15 is the 20 to
- 5:5725 riding through the 30 hit and brought down the other 35 yard line
- 6:01It rather strongly on the far side of the field
- 6:03We have Goldman and Greg boys were there to make the stop on him as he advanced the football
- 6:09Just short of the 35 yard line and the officials are going to spot it with its nose at the 34
- 6:16at the bar high spot
- 6:1831 yard return of the kickoff
- 6:21or no blood
- 6:23of the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 6:25First down at 10 yards to go now the flight advantage of running room will be to the left and the Steelers will line up with
- 6:31Franklin to the right to the far side
- 6:35And they will bring
- 6:37Frank Lewis top to the left Brad Shaw is the quarterback
- 6:40He baked those deep control has plenty of time fired down the middle
- 6:44Shaken and faked it at the that the New Orleans 44 yard line and immediately is covered by Ernie Jackson
- 6:52Knockdown
- 6:54Finally marker goes down on the play
- 6:56That's like Gary to the New Orleans 44 yard line and I started right out wanting to call him LSU
- 7:04Well, it was a dog gone nice play on first time to play action pass the fake to the running back
- 7:10And a beautiful cross on the middle drilled it right on target
- 7:16The penalty against New Orleans is declined and the Steelers have advanced on a Jerry Bradshaw pass
- 7:22Beautiful fast play to the New Orleans 44 yard line and proud Cheney defense defense
- 7:30All right, they shipped out of the eye formation
- 7:34Bradshaw handling the football gives it to Franco tries to get a couple of yards
- 7:38How much running room in there is Billy Newsome plugged the gap
- 7:42Newsome is the sixth five to under 60 pounder in his fifth year from Grambling University
- 7:46He advances the football to the New Orleans 42 yard line and going to be second down and eight yards to go
- 7:52The offensive line seems to do a good job of moving the the New Orleans front four but Franco did not make very much yardage on the play
- 8:04Ron Shanklin has now caught 18 passes on the season
- 8:08One on a touchdown during the course of the campaign second man and eight in the eye formation
- 8:16Bradshaw calling the signal gives the ball to Davis property I crashed it through the middle of the 40 and goes down near the 35 yard line
- 8:24Davis running into Joe Owens the defensive right end of the New Orleans state is from Alcorn State and he made the stop
- 8:32And now we bring in a second tight end it will be third and one Randy Grossman is on replacing Ron Shanklin
- 8:42New Orleans makes an adjustment Alex Price coming on to replace Joe Owens and the ball is at the far hash mark
- 8:48Pittsburgh in the New Orleans territory the 35 and a half yard line
- 8:54We got Lois flanking right the ends are both tight Larry Brown and Randy Grossman they shift out of the eye formation
- 9:00And here is Bradshaw keeping the football running to the left getting back to the right and at the 34 yard line I believe he has the first down
- 9:08He was called rather stubbornly by Alex Price
- 9:12May have been a broken play I'm not certain Bradshaw keeps to the left kept the football and then cut back and he picks up the first down the second one of the evening for the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 9:22Funny thing happened on their defensive tackle Darwin Moore seems to think that Bradshaw had given the ball up Bradshaw had not he still had it and Darwin Moore penetrating the backfield ran right by Bradshaw could have knocked him down for a lot
- 9:36All is midway between the sidelines straight New Orleans on defense throwing up a four man front with linebackers the linebacker pull up tight on the left and the corner back on the right and the handoff to Franco gets good block from Sam Davis running to the right and the blocking call as he just already stopped after a short game
- 9:56Emily marker down on the play picked up about two yards running to the right that time Bob Pollard and Billy Newsome reacted beautifully on the play and we got a holding call against the Steelers
- 10:06That's going to cost us 15 yards first one of the afternoon make that the first one of the night
- 10:12And that's kind of a bad. Well it's a bad situation but especially so because in the kind of condition that the footballer quarterbacks have been that uncertainty who's going to play well Terry Bradshaw coming out here getting the assignment tonight
- 10:28promptly moving the team well that figures to bolster his confidence but now this penalty sets them back so it may hurt Bradshaw as well as his drive. We'll have to see.
- 10:43Bradshaw 10 yarder they put the ball back at the 44 yard line whereupon the wind picks it up and blow it about a yard before one of the officials tracked him down this breeze is blowing swiftly as we view the ballgame the wind is coming against the Steelers here in the opening period
- 11:00line up in the eye formation split in left and flanker set out to the right side Mary Brown is the tight end and Bradshaw gets them out of the eye Frank O'Hara to the right Steve Davis to the left taking time Jerry drops back now firing out to the left to Frank Lewis
- 11:15and the ball falls it in at the New Orleans 32 and a half yard line steps out of bounds covered on the play by Vivian Lee the right cornerback for the Saints Vivian Lee 6-3 to unbuttoned from Prairie View in his fourth season in the NFL
- 11:29the Bears have regained 10 yards on the play in fact 11 they move the ball down to the 33 yard line Bradshaw has now completed two out of two passes attempted and it's going to be second down at about nine yards to go at the Saints 32 and a half yard line
- 11:45they're wearing golf pants white jerseys black numals and gold helmets and the Steelers with the black jerseys and gold pants Bradshaw systems out of the eye wide set for the Steelers and Kerry drops back deep east Jay South fires the screen back to the right side
- 12:01Franco running with the football over the 35 breaks the tackle goes to the 30 caught and brought down at the 29 yard line by Ernie Jackson screen far the screen did not appear to be effective but the running of Frank O'Hara was effective as he managed to pick up yardage on what appeared to be an almost lost play gets four yards on it it will be third down now and five yards to go
- 12:23you know funny thing a lot of people are that the Steelers don't throw enough to their backs but I totaled up the figures there the other day and found out that 38 percent of their completions have been to their running backs so who knows
- 12:37Bradshaw is three for three for 37 yards here the early stages of the ballgame Steelers in state territory at the 29 yard line Bradshaw the long jump drops back again, knocks his arm now led to the football at 35 to 35 to 25 to 20 and heads out of bounds at the 18 yard line
- 12:58Jerry Bradshaw resourceful as always cornered on the far side of the field Ernie Jackson was over there and they chased him out of bounds he stepped out at the 17 and a half yard line it will be a first down as 10 yards to go
- 13:13Bradshaw had great pass protection all day to throw that time but he would have been foolish had he not run with the football because the entire far side of the field was devoid of things there was nobody over there and he had a lot of running room
- 13:28once again Jones comes off the field Alex Price goes on from New Orleans in their defensive alignment he's been shankling out to the right bring Frank Lewis to the left line up in the eye should see Davis off to the right side of the eye formation
- 13:43rolling back to get up front here's a handoff to Frank all those right back to the left heads over the middle is inside the 15 and goes down almost to the 12 yard line another beautiful job of running by Frank O'Hara says he had his flight leader the right made a short cut back down the hole and Jim Merlo finally found Frank on running down Merlo a second year man from Sanford and the football is very close to the 12 yard line
- 14:08and it's going to be second down and five yards to go and Frank you're still rolling over 500 yards in his last five games the other dealers coming out of a huddle layman field goes over the football Gary Bradshaw steps under center that's all back up look firing
- 14:25toward the end zone Frank Lewis leading five to go line up to get him down out of the house he got the football and he had the cornerback really right on him he was right on him defensively but he came down out of bounds and it is an incomplete pass
- 14:41Jim Merlo with the right on Jerry Bradshaw on the play and Bradshaw had to get rid of it rather quickly Lewis made a great catch but he got out of bounds incomplete and that's the first pass with this tonight and my information was that the dealers can work on cornerback Vivian Lee and they've thrown
- 14:59quite in his direction but Frank Lewis so perhaps that's what they're trying to do all right it's another living ballgame about four and a half minutes come off the clock on the first quarter in New Orleans wide set for the theater running backs and Bradshaw
- 15:14knows a little bit about the game and he's back in the game coming to the field and earning Jackson finally knocked down at the 12 yard line Larry Brown made the tackle the safety blitz from Bradshaw that the hurried throw got rid of the football
- 15:35intercepted right at the one yard line by Ernie Jackson and Jackson brings it all the way back out running rather quickly along the ten and finally brought down at the 12 yard line and as far as Jackson is concerned
- 15:52on their stat list we'll catch up with you in just a moment on that but it was a beautiful run at least laterally until he was finally knocked down at the 12 yard line.
- 16:08No Parker's putting the left and they line up with the second of the single running back giving them now they've been the man in motion the guy with his back to the wing back and I just feel like running with a ball to the left and he's going to get no ground running to the far side no blood came in and falls in on him hitting him at the line of damage and he may have fallen forward for at least three yards.
- 16:28If the Steelers are expecting some sort of fancy stuff from the Saints tonight at that time they were ready for it. On the interception I don't think he can fault Bradshaw he had to get rid of that ball before he wanted to because nobody picked up the blitz. No Parker picked up the blitz and he had to release the ball and he didn't get it over that man's head at the one yard line.
- 16:51Third interception for Jackson and Tom Myers is the guy who had the great rush on Bradshaw off of the safety blitz. Second man and nine yards to go Archie Manning is the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints and Manning is back to throw. Manning is going to be stacked inside the 10 yard line.
- 17:11Joe Green and Steve Fernes are there and Meme Joe. When did he get to win first? He did white and white and Fernes and white and white got to win first and he'll get set up for the sack and the Steelers have racked up another sack.
- 17:29They may split it up to half and half Jack I think you've almost passed through there but it was a good rush on Archie Manning. And Steve Fernes of course starting because Bradsholmes not up to par had that bot with pneumonia last week and also had a bruised thigh.
- 17:47Well if White gets full credit that would be his seventh sack of the season. The ball is up to 10 third down 12 and a half yards to go and Manning drops back in. Look out here they come he runs straight ahead out of the pocket and he's sealed.
- 17:59And for the last Joe Green got him this time. Fantastic rush by Dwight White and also by Elsie Greenwood. He had a tear they might get in with him the 10 yard line. He stepped forward he's got up the eighth and the sack was finally recorded by Joe Green.
- 18:15Yes Elsie Greenwood very near he's got nailed him back around the two yard line but Archie avoided him but Joe caught him. Already two backs for the Steelers 42 for the season they lead the lead.
- 18:29Tom Blanchard the bit of funny standing in the st. James zone when Edwards and Lynn Swan are deep for the fifth third Steelers. Here's the step Blanchard gets it away floating coming down to 49 yard line Swan straight over the 45 to 40. He has hit on a gigantic tackle at the 43 yard line.
- 18:49The 43 yard line flipped like a 10-10 into the air. Lauren is brought down to tackle by John Coleman. The ball will be placed at the 36 yard line. We have a break in the action we'll be right back.
- 19:03Hi Eddie and I'm wearing my very own official NFL Steelers sports shirt. Well of course you can't see it because this is radio. But what you're not seeing here is a really clean white sports shirt with the Steelers emblem embroidered. This thing fits right here Lauren Poyne. My dad got it for me free from Pittsburgh National Bank.
- 19:26That's right Eddie and friends you can get your free Steelers sports shirt by opening a regular passbook account with $500 or more at Pittsburgh National or by adding $500 to your present account. You earn the highest savings deposit rate the banking law allows.
- 19:45Now these shirts are available in a full range of adults and children sizes but you better hurry because our supply is limited. My dad says he's glad his money is working for him at Pittsburgh National but I'm just glad he got me this shirt.
- 20:03Remembered at the IC. A 41 yard punt by Tom Blanchard an 11 yard return and so far from what we've seen I don't think the New Orleans Kickers were hurt too badly in that automobile accident because on the kickoff McClark looted a time for the Steelers three yard line and rather high too.
- 20:25And now Blanchard is 141 yards so I guess those boys were not destroyed by that automobile accident yesterday morning.
- 20:34The other is ready to go at the same 36 yard line. First down 10 running back to Franco Harrison Steve Davis and here's a handoff to have guys to get to the outside and pick up a couple of yards on the play going to some of them immediately.
- 20:55The other is right down at the 34 get him about two yards it will be second down and a let me run over that defense for you again. Newsom Pollard more on the front with Merlo better feel and Coleman is the linebacker Jackson and Vivian Lee on the corner and Johnny Fuller and Tom Myers of the safety.
- 21:14The Steelers Frank Lewis to the left flanking right is Ron Shanklin they should see Davis to the right off the top of the eyes.
- 21:26The 33 yard line struggles to the 32 and the tackle made by Don Coleman.
- 21:45The former defensive end of looking for Michigan and the way Coleman gets that tackle.
- 22:00The lineup lay down as a tight end Shanklin why did the writers the flanker split off to Frank Lewis and he shipped out of the eye to set back to why Bradshaw Jake Bradshaw is the Bradshaw.
- 22:15The
- 22:19running the battered down and then on the run at the 11 yard line running to the far side of the field over the fire goes into the end zone and the faster goes from Jerry Bradshaw to Frank Lewis it covers 31 yard downfield and for Louis it is his funny to get off the season.
- 22:41And his fourth touchdown and he got that ball right in front of Tommy Myers that no regarded safety man let Myers fall on his face and pull it to the end zone.
- 22:54Right here is your LL at the point after try it is up into the wind it is good.
- 23:13The Pittsburgh National Bank just deposited $500 in a regular passbook account. You earn the highest savings deposit rate the banking law allows the shirts are available in a full range of adult and children sizes and will label your shirt right here home.
- 23:30Today our supplies limited come into any of our convenient offices and open a new account for add to your present one today so whether you're getting football.
- 23:47The football player. Get your official NFL sealers for church from Pittsburgh National after all everyone plays a better game with money in the bank.
- 24:06The IC ready to receive with a small plan in the NFL and Howard Stevens by five and under 65 second year man from Louisville along with Maurice Spencer six footer from North Carolina central.
- 24:20Bradshaw is more for six thousand with one interception and so the 68 yards and one touchdown and running. He's very bright for 14 yards. So we have got even and Spencer D and you're kicking off the first very high coming down to the 30.
- 24:38The 30 driving ballers are students with a football and a little player coming up short of the 35 yard line and the tackle for the dealers made by Lauren J.
- 24:50And the one is back in business at a zone 33.
- 24:54I realize that guy's no taller than I am. I wonder what happened if Lauren's hate hit me. What would happen if you ran into that young man with a hard Steven.
- 25:12The game is out of the heart of the manning for your veterans of all this is the quarterback and the one with two men to the right. They've got a wingback set to the right side and now he's in motion.
- 25:25They took a quick pass out to Joe Parker man in motion moving out to a wide position.
- 25:30The 30 five and up to the 40 yard line.
- 25:44Archie Manning trying his first pass and completing it.
- 25:49He's a judge second down to Lauren James as we play Jack Sam and linebacker or the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now let's see what they're going to do.
- 26:00Joe Parker goes wide in the left. They bring Bob Newell and out to the right. They're using two regular setbacks.
- 26:07They're going to fire man for basically running on the long jump. He's a deep handoff back here to get to the next and the rookie permission you and he's running to the left along the 37 yard line.
- 26:22Andy Russell made the stop right right. A great play by Dwight White. There's a leap in there through the air. Tremendous quickness. Did not make the tackle but knocked the guy off balance for Andy Russell to make the stop.
- 26:40That's a big play when they are second man about one second and two. Now they come up and look at a third and six. They deploy Bob Newell into the left. Bring Joe Parker to the right.
- 26:53Running back to Maxson and Phillips. Archie Manning takes. He's back to go. And here it is to the near side and it is incomplete. Somebody got a hand on it I believe and send it.
- 27:04On the near side of the field Alvin Maxson. Dwight White again with a great rush. He's a four year man from East Texas State doing a fine job and tore down for New Orleans.
- 27:14Dwight White has not been having as big a year as he has had in the past. And he has of course been bothered by a bad foot this year. A very painful bruised heel.
- 27:26But perhaps he's come around and is determined to show them what Dwight White is like. What he used to be like and can be again.
- 27:35Joe Green had a hand on that ball deflecting that pass. Tom Blanchard in front for many things. He's the 41 yarder the last time. Swan and Edwards down field.
- 27:42Wobbly coming into Lynn Swan at the 24. He's out over the 30 going to the sideline at the 35. Pippen goes down and covered at the 36 yard line. Lost his footing. Making a cut on the artificial turf across the way.
- 27:56Lynn Swan was immediately covered by Maurice Spencer. And Steelers football continues after this free timeout.
- 28:03The Pippen State game Thursday night is called out. But there are plenty of 50 yard line seats at Buddies in Market Square. The only place on time for a 50 yard line seat to watch the Pippen State game on Buddies' Advent Video Beams right by television from Opus One.
- 28:18And after the game joining the fun with the good time cohort Coach Joe Avizzano. Remember two weekdays Buddies is a pleasant place to lunch and enjoy our iBasin.
- 28:28Buddies the only place to be after every game. Or for lunch. Buddies in Market Square.
- 28:38Jack Fleming with Marin Koefe at the Lane Stadium in New Orleans. We'll be back after this pause on the Steelers football network.
- 28:45Mike Bajan here hoping you'll be listening to ETV as I put new requests for now and then.
- 28:58In these 10 minutes that have elapsed in this ballgame the Saints have had the ball quite. They have not been able to record a first time. The Steelers defense has been superb and of course the Steelers lead 7-0 thanks to a 31 yard touchdown pass.
- 29:15Bradshaw hitting Frank Lewis at the 12 yard line approximately the 12 I do believe. And Lewis doling to the corner of the end zone and making it. So the Steelers so far have dominated this ballgame thoroughly.
- 29:29Bradshaw playing in his native state Louisiana is looking very crisp. Blowing the ball beautifully. 2-1 interception but that's because he had a hurry to pass under a blitz. Okay here goes Bradshaw again.
- 29:45And it's tight. Appalachian shifting. Steve Davis to the right off the eye. Blanker set to the right side. Here's the handoff to Franco Harris. Tries it off the right side. He'll get about 2 yards.
- 29:59And the 38 yard line Jim Merlo. 225 pound left side linebacker from Stanford makes the stop. And Franco sticks up 2 yards and it will be 2nd down and 8 yards to go. For the Pittsburgh Steelers they lead 7-0 in the ballgame. And we have 445 remaining to play in the opening period.
- 30:17And we have you with us tonight as we bring you the play-by-play coverage from Tulane Stadium in New Orleans over 70,000 on hand. Running backs that set wide ends are tight. Blanker right for the Steelers.
- 30:30Now they shift and bring Franco Harris directly in behind the quarterback taking a lot of time. Oh wow Bradshaw right side to the 40. And his miss on the tackle goes out of bounds at the 41 yard line.
- 30:42Nice job. Ernie Jackson and Jim Merlo pursuing step away from Jackson. Merlo cornered him and sent him out of bounds. Gordon Gravel blocking that time. The third year man from Brigham Young. And the ball is at the 41 yard line where it is going to be 2nd and 5th.
- 30:57It's solid blocked by Gordon Gravel and I thought Bradshaw would make even more yards. What was Gravel doing such a nice job on the far side but it's 3rd and 5 yards to go.
- 31:11This time we got Shantlin right to the right putting Frank Lewis to the left. Bradshaw will pass. Swing pass left side off the finger jib to Steve Davis. It is incomplete coming up and crying for an interception.
- 31:24Was linebacker Wayne Spalman of the Saints. He cannot hold it either. Pass ball is incomplete and Bobby Walden will come on for the first time tonight. He'll be kicking into a 3-5th free.
- 31:35It was a good play Bradshaw and a quick catch going out to Steve Davis who just couldn't hold the football.
- 31:50Steven Spencer and Barrett Ophilus are deep. And here is Walden running the football. Getting into the rim coming down short. Bouncing kickoff at the 21 yard line and Spencer gets ground back behind the 20 coming to the right side of Steven.
- 32:06And he's right down at the 19 yard line. You can see the ball. A scene of tight and then hit the rim and then come down and very tough to handle. Reggie Garrett made the stop as they gave ground after the reception.
- 32:20And the ball is crowded finally at the 21 yard line. A 39 yard front for Bobby Walden. Reggie Garrett incidentally is playing against his brother tonight. Not head to head against him. They're both receivers.
- 32:32Reggie Garrett is a tight end for the New Orleans Saints. He's Reggie's older brother.
- 32:39All right this time we're going to send Bob Newell and after that putting a man in the slot. Paul Ophilus. Not going to make that. Jeff Phillips bringing him in close now.
- 32:48Now they bring him in motion and the give is to the one step back and Alvin Maxson drives forward over the 20 back to the 21. You may pick up a yard after the 22 yard line. Sort of submarineing under the pile up of black jersey.
- 33:03And the line that's in there. Interact with the virus all week long. It's actually viral pneumonia and that's just not up to par yet but I suspect we might see some of them tonight.
- 33:21And they charge to go. Wide men in either direction. Two step backs and a big draw. Now Manning throwing and the pass is incomplete at the 21 yard line. And send it for Bob Newell and Ophilus Fingertip. J.T. Thomas covered the play for the Steelers.
- 33:37And that was incomplete. Archie Manning throwing the football for the New Orleans Saints is one for three on the night so far.
- 33:53Backed up by Larry Sippa. We saw Sippa quarterback. Quarterback in the club in the preseason game. A rookie. Bobby Scott is another of their backup quarterbacks.
- 34:08And as Myron talked about it earlier Manning has been involved in trouble down here. They thought he might try to jump to the world football. Here's Manning throwing all your most intercepted by no one. Sending the pass for Joe Parker. Too high for 35 yard lines.
- 34:23He went up in the air for the football. Now we're getting a penalty marker down on the play. Potential holding against the Steelers. That will cost them five yards for the first down. New Orleans will get its initial first down of the ball game and the Steelers will be it with their second penalty.
- 34:43Total of 15 yards. Lose the football forward to 27 for a contest. Full of the good thing. Mel Brunson intercepts that pass because it would have been raised. They make Mel Brunson feel better. But he has a good track and an intercept.
- 35:07Howard Stevens is in replacing Jeff Phillips. And they set Stevens up in the slot close on the left side. Now they bring him in motion. Pitchback to him. The speedy little guy went into the right side. This hard as a 25 and slammed to the artificial curve.
- 35:26Jackal was spayed by Jack Lambert. The runner was pretty well cornered by a fine defensive effort by the Steelers. L.C. Greenwood had cut him off at the pass about a two and a half yard loss on the play.
- 35:41Second down and 12 and a half yards to go. That is the same fellow running with the football. And we show you 5'5", 165 pounds. No bigger than Lyron. What's your weight? 538. He's got a little weight on you anyway.
- 35:56They put him in a close slot on the left side. Manning is back to go. Firing to Stevens and saw off his fingertips. He went up to 29 with one hand. Could not pull it in. Andy Russell gave up the cover. All of a sudden Stevens becomes a vital weapon in their offense.
- 36:15Stevens rushing six times for eight yards. Six times for minus eight yards. Your defense is just too far tonight. And as that play that Stevens went in motion on and took the ball, actually they were running out of a double wing that time, which they will frequently show.
- 36:39The Orange Jays are placed to see for this, giving us four linebackers. Lambert's running a little, now dropping back. And the handoff is given to Alvin Maxson. He finds running room straight up to the 35 and on up to the 40 yard line.
- 36:54And now by Glenn Edwards to three safety. Going to spot the football about a half yard short of the 40 to 39 and a half yard line. 14 yard game for the New Orleans Saints. Alvin Maxson, looking for this and he'll carry the ball. Second first down tonight for New Orleans.
- 37:12And now for Nessus back in replacing Lawrence Jays. They're having trouble keeping the football located. The wind is blowing it around. I think we're ready to go now. Kevin Melving in favor of the Steelers.
- 37:29And now for the formation. Manning gives to the top of the eye. This is Jess Phillips, bowing ahead for about three yards. He'll be to the 42 yard line. The end cover to football. Center of the Steelers defense.
- 37:44Hanger, Budweiser, White, Mike Wagner making the stop. And the ball is at the 42 and a half yard line. Second down and about seven yards to go. They pick up three yards. Phillips goes to seven yard better run from Michigan State. It's one to under 10 pounder.
- 38:03The New Orleans Saints break out of the huddle. Thompson, Cupp, Gideon, Gracely and Morrison are the interior linemen. Paul Steele is their tight end, a rookie from Michigan. And here it is. Look out, they may pass the football.
- 38:18Parker on the end of the line, he can find no one to throw to and he is caught and pulled. Back at the 36 yard line, Jack Lambert and Joe Green make the stop. So a deep handoff coming left to right. And his arm cocked, Parker wanted to get rid of the football. The rookie from Florida was trapped and brought down. And the loss takes the ball back to the 37 yard line.
- 38:40Well, he's got a quarterback back, but at the back I guess. I don't know, he could put his fist back on that, Jack. Well, but he's throwing as much as he did handoff. He had an option of either running or passing, so it developed into, I guess, a running play. He was looking.
- 38:56Thompson just throws. I don't know. Ball is back at the 37, third down and 13. Now this time Archie Manning takes the draw, he's deep to throw and fires down the near. Look out, too high at the 33 yard line for Bob Newman.
- 39:14Little and wide open, they're getting the receivers open and Manning having difficulty hitting his target. Archie, one foot by passing for a total of eight yards tonight.
- 39:29If we warm up tonight to Gary Gerson's statistics, we'll be able to keep you even better abreast of the ball game. So Jim, I've only seen him twice this year because it gives me a little bit of time to take some little bit of time to interpret them.
- 39:47Manning, and that's an odd looking thing. Manning low trajectory, hits the wind, now picks up at the 25. There's one spot over the 30, the 35, and finally Russell's over the ground at the 37 yard line.
- 39:59The ball was doing some tricks on putt. That one came up on a low trajectory. You could visibly see it drop as the wind seemed to get a hold of it. It came down, Swan picked it up, made the return, a 12 yard return on the 38 yard putt, the ball is at the 37 and a half yard. Maybe that's happened.
- 40:17Whatever it is that's happening, I hope it continues. Andrew Dice Steeler is in the second quarter moving left to right. Shacklin Plank for the news, out of the right of Brad Shaw, picks it up, Steve Davis, and he is hit at the 42 yard line.
- 40:31He's hit a zero and hit on by Jimmy Newsome. What a wick. Newsome, five year veteran from Grandway, 6'5, 260 pounds, and he hit him like you might hit the cock ring dummy in practice. Good solid lick that will be third down now and six yards to go for the Steelers.
- 40:50And I wonder if this time Terry Bradshaw won't try to work on Vivian Lee again, cornerback Vivian Lee. We have Cole Davis, Mansfield, Plack, and Gravel in the interior line, getting out of the high formation.
- 41:07Here's Bradshaw back to the throw, firing, and it is picked off, intercepted inside the 45 yard line, and immediately John Myers who made the interception goes in. He's trying to hit Franco Harris, who's in behind him.
- 41:25Gary Mullins made the draft, and Myers came up with the interception. Now on the season, it's one Myers. That is his third interception, boosting the Saints trouble for the season to 15.
- 41:41Here is the second interception of the night, Bradshaw. Saints in good field position at the Pittsburgh 44. All right, seven nothing ball game. Wing back step to the left side, Jeff Phillips, single running back, and he gives him the bottom, and he has running room up the middle of the 40 and down to the 35 and on to the 34 yard line.
- 42:03Jack Ham makes the tackle. Alvin Jackson, single running back, get back there, he may have a first down. They're going to call time to measure at the Pittsburgh 34 yard line.
- 42:16Ten yards to game on that play equaled almost the entire output of the Saints offense, 11 yards in the opening period.
- 42:24They go over the left side of the field line that time, and the Saints well coming off that electrifying interception, and that's what it was, was Myers holding up to make it for the Saints to rely.
- 42:37I get a feeling that the Saints bread and butter offense without the razzle dazzle was much more effective than their wide stuff and their end arounds and their run and pass options and that sort of thing.
- 42:49That may very well be the case, Jack. All right, now they will spread our defense with this type of thing. Joe Parker goes to the right, they bring Paul Hyland to the left.
- 42:59They've got two running backs set up, Archie Manning is the quarterback. It is a short yardage play, and he gives that ball off to Jeff Phillips running to the left, and he stepped out of the 30 by Mike Wagner.
- 43:10Paul's at the 29 yard line and they have a first down. So they came outside that time and Mike Wagner making the stop. The Saints pick up their third first down.
- 43:23And we're right at the top of this stadium in some sort of a metal and wood radio facility that just shimmers and shakes with its crowd. It's the weirdest feeling I've ever had.
- 43:35It's a very noisy stadium too, especially when they start stamping out there.
- 43:40You sit here, it's like sitting on top of a vibrator. It just vibrates the whole game.
- 43:45All right, they've got a double wing situation, a man split to the right, a single running back. Now they bring a wing back in motion and they pick the ball back in the cap. They're in trouble.
- 43:54Like I told you, Jeff Phillips goes down. And there it is, getting away from the bread and butter stuff, and they have lost back to the 35 yard liners, White, White, and Andy Russell.
- 44:04The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be perfectly geared to meet anything that they do from that wide stop. And that time they brought that wing back in motion and it'll have picked it back to him and there were Steelers all over him as they faced second down and 16.
- 44:18I asked Chuck Snow before the game if he would have to put in special defenses for this razzle-bazzle offensive material and he said no. We don't do anything different. We just do it right and we'll stop it.
- 44:31The ball is at the 35 now to second down and 16. All right, this time Bob Mullen goes wide to the right and they put a man in the spot ball field out there. And now Manning rolling right. Look out, he's keeping to the 35, to the far side, the 30 and goes out of bounds.
- 44:46At the 29 yard line, chased out over there by Jack Hamm. Archie Manning running with the football, brings it back down to the Pittsburgh 29 yard line. And it's going to be third down and 10 yards to go for New Orleans in Pittsburgh territory and the Steelers lead at 7 to nothing.
- 45:06So 11 minutes and 51 seconds remaining in the second period.
- 45:16And the Steelers defense getting set. Joe Green talking momentarily with Dwight White and now they are away from Sinks coming back to the line of scrimmage and here is New Orleans. Wide man to the left is Bob Mullen, man in the slot on the left side with a single running back and now they switch marker out further to the right. Very wide in both directions. Archie Manning on the long count, drops straight back to rushes on now. He runs out of the block up there after him. Here's Green making a diving stab at him with the 25, a flag down downfield.
- 45:45Joe Green gets in and falls at the 24 yard line. But downfield on the far side of the field at the 17 yard line, a penalty marker is down. So something has been detected and possibly against the Steelers.
- 46:00And it is the Fidget Holdings against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 46:05That will cost us 5 yards and the first down.
- 46:11New Orleans gets its fourth first down of the evening and two of them have been on defensive holding calls.
- 46:18And Archie Manning is learning something about the speed of the Steelers front four repeatedly when Archie has had to scramble those big Steelers have been able to run him down as Dwight White did that time. But Dwight's race went for naught because the holding penalty gives him the first down at the 19.
- 46:40All right, the Saints lining up in the eye. Alvin Maxson, the inside back just filled up to the top of the eyes. Flotler formation Archie Manning giving it off to Phillips and he is nailed.
- 46:50Beautifully. Fine defensive play by Andy Russell.
- 46:54At the 22 yard line. Let's see what they've got the football. Last of about 3 yards. It's going to be second down and 13 yards to go for the New Orleans Saints at the Pittsburgh 22 yard line.
- 47:07And that holding call we understand was against Jack Ham, the other linebacker Jack Ham.
- 47:14So the things now facing second down and 12 yards to go at the 22 with the Steelers.
- 47:21Phillips now has five carries. He's not a zero yarder. Blank right split in left and Manning drops back. Now Manning runs to the right. Manning Manning still looking. They're actually tires almost intercepted what's the ruling right on the side.
- 47:37We're in a driving catch.
- 47:39Now let's see what the ruling is going to be. Jack Ham made the diving catch on the far side of the field at Pittsburgh's ball.
- 47:50Jack Ham made a diving catch. Alvin Maxson was the incentive to steal it.
- 47:57And the Steelers take over.
- 48:00For Ham is fourth interception of the season. The Steelers interception total is up to 21.
- 48:07They have a break in the actual ladies and gentlemen. We'll be right back.
- 48:24What makes the crisis in the Steelers number one? Take it from me Mary Green. It's because they've got America's best selling small car lines from Italian sexes and scams. Why these cars so popular? Well maybe it's because you can get so many people in them. Or get so much in the front. Or get so many miles to a gallon.
- 48:43Whatever the reason, when you see our new little Plymouth, who we know the reaction wrestling to get.
- 49:03Pick up your Steeler Booster Kit containing bumper stickers, Steeler schedule and Steeler media guides from your Steeler and Plymouth Plymouth Steeler.
- 49:14So Jack Ham is given the interception. There was some question as to whether he was in bounds when he made it. And there was considerable indecisiveness I thought on the part of the officials. I didn't see anybody make a prompt ruling on the play. But ultimately they did give the ball to the Steelers and they'll now start at their own 22 yard line.
- 49:36There was a diving interception by Ham. He left his feet on the far side of the field and I just wouldn't want to hazard a guess as to whether that was a good call or not.
- 49:48If it was a good call, so it's a good call. But the crowd doesn't think so.
- 50:07The stadium goes ahead and takes the handoff. The left side of the 25, the 30, the 35, the 40, the 45, the 50 cut from behind and brought down at the same 46 yard line. Jerry Bradshaw went against the crowd and finally was brought down by Vivian Lee, the cornerback to the far side of the field.
- 50:24And that time, Pittsburgh advanced the football from a dawn 22 to the New York, New Orleans 46 yard line and that's again a 32 yard rushing yardage going to Bradshaw, Pittsburgh's fifth first down to the right.
- 50:38And it's great to see that he's running that play Bradshaw. He had a really cool signal at the top of his voice to make himself heard over the billy. He faced beautifully to Franco and took off with the football and made big yardage.
- 50:52Bradshaw for Jerry, 49 yards is back deep to pass there after him. They've got him. He breaks through to it. They've got him in for two. Billy Newsom had him and Jerry appeared to be ready to break through and Newsom put the grab on him even as Jalen Moore closed in.
- 51:08So that is a stack for New Orleans and it takes the football back to the Pittsburgh. 22 and a half yard line. Jerry is very deep as he set up the pass and the loss 10, 11, 12 yards for the Steelers.
- 51:24And the New Orleans Saints come up with a stack tonight.
- 51:29So there's been one against both sides. And the Steelers averaging only one pack for ballgame that is their offensive line. So maybe New Orleans is heading their allotment for the night. Let's hope so. New Orleans with a fourth linebacker in there, Rich Middleton.
- 51:45Got a three man right.
- 51:47And here's the ball Jerry downfield. Franco Harris.
- 51:51And he is over the 15 down to the 45 yard line. Tom Myers made the stop. And that time as they set up to defend against the pass, they went to Franco Harris.
- 52:03And the great running back from Penn State brings it back to the New Orleans 45 yard line. It's going to be third and 10. Good call. They shot Franco right up the middle, fooled the Saints.
- 52:13And Franco made up the artichoke that Brad Shaw lost when he was back on first time. 13 yard gain as they switch personnel to take a linebacker out and throw a defensive lineman back in. They're in a four man front once again.
- 52:26Third and 10. Pittsburgh at the New Orleans 45. New Orleans almost offside. Got back. Now Brad Shaw's back to throw the rushers on. Green pass left side to Franco. He's tapped.
- 52:36And now he gets a block from over the 50 and out of bounds at the New Orleans 49 yard line. Lost the four yards on the play. Jim Merlowe made the stop.
- 52:45Jerry Mullins is out there trying to protect him. But it was a hopeless job. Saved him about five yards as he got back to the 49 yard line.
- 52:56And it is going to be fourth down now and 14 yards to go.
- 53:01Jerry Bradshaw now five for nine. Two interceptions. One touchdown pass.
- 53:09Bobby Walden in confirmation.
- 53:14New Orleans set up deep powered. Stevens is the deep man and Walden kicked it with a win. Very high. Stevens backs up. Takes it out the six. Gives ground behind the five. He hits. Struggles forward. He's back up to the six or seven yard line.
- 53:29The little guy. Gave ground behind the five and finally got back to the six or seven yard line. Reggie Garrett and Bradley were down there to bring him down. We have a break in the action and we'll be right back.
- 53:41That's your price of Plymouth dealers. Telling you we've got America's number one selling small car. The reasons are Valiant, Justice and Scam.
- 54:00But we don't stop there. We've got the new small Fury. Fury sports. Brand new styling and the smallest Fury package. And Cordoba, our new small Chrysler. And that's right, small Chrysler.
- 54:13And our full size Chrysler has some great new looks too. So come on in. See your Chrysler for the dealers.
- 54:34Pick up your Steeler Booster kit containing bumper stickers, Steeler schedule and Steeler media guide from your Steeler and Chrysler Plymouth dealers.
- 54:45Beautiful punt by Bobby Walden. 44 yards and very high so that the coverage was down there. And Howie Stevens only 5 feet 5. Builded by about five tacklers. He made a one yard return.
- 54:58The Saints in the hole at their six yard line. The Steeler defense famous for scoring points has helped. Has an opportunity now.
- 55:07To Orleans right to left at the same six yard line. Archie Manning is the quarterback. He running back and he gives the ball to Alvin Maxson and Maxson flugs straight ahead. He'll pick up a couple of yards, bring it to the nine yard line.
- 55:32And there goes 6'4", 2'55". Third year man from Rhode Island. Playing in place of Ernie Holmes. Second down, eight yards to go.
- 55:47He's going to play to the right split end to the left. And the give is again to Maxson. Very little running room. A lot down at the ten yard line. And they uncovered the ball and down at the bottom of it, Furness, Bill Green.
- 56:03Well, Bill Green would have had a shoulder over in the play. The ball will be spotted at the 11. It's going to be third and five. Steve Furness playing opposite Jake Cupp. Offensive guard Jake Cupp, an 11 year man. A former teammate at Washington of Ray Mansfield. Furness is holding it down.
- 56:20Here's a pitch off to the right side. Jess Phillips running with a football. Furness is going up the ten. Dives forward over the 15. And have a first down I believe. Very close to it. As he was tracked down running to the far side of the field by Jack M.
- 56:35That's that line back of the Steelers. Let's see what they do with the football. They have called time. And it's going to require a measurement of the six to brought in the short distance at the far side of the field.
- 56:49Tearing intently at the football over there. What is the decision? It is short by an inch. We're going to pause now for station identification.
- 57:00I'm Tom Lyons and I'm right here every night at midnight to keep you company all night long.
- 57:06New Orleans is ready to go into fun formation and the Saints are going to be kicking against some kind of a win. Tom Blanchard will be their punter. And we go deep with Lynn Edwards and Lynn Fawn.
- 57:28Blanchard standing at his own three yard line. Awaiting the snap of the football. Big strong wind against him. He takes his time. Gets an extra step. Gets a low trajectory. Good kick.
- 57:41All the way down to the 35. Fawn takes it. First ball goes down. Gets up. And the players look to get.
- 57:49Fawn went down. Apparently one straight diving in there. And Maurice Hunter. One gets credit for the tackle.
- 58:04Now let's see. They come up especially with John Coleman. 50 yard punt against the wind. And now a clumping penalty. They march off against the Steelers. A 15 yarder from the 34 yard line back to the 19.
- 58:21They're running into some kind of misfortune with penalties tonight. 35 yards total. And it reminds me of the fiasco I watched at Blackbird, Virginia Saturday afternoon after West Virginia taking a 22-21 lead with about a minute and a half or less to go.
- 58:37And officials at that time hit the mountaineers with three 15 yarders, Myron. I'll have to tell you more about that later. Some kind of an afternoon at the 19 yard line. Bradshaw handing off. And the Steelers plowing straight ahead.
- 58:51Franco has the ball carrier to the 24 yard line. Billy meets them at the bottom of the play for the New Orleans Saints. And Franco will pick up a solid five yard second down and five to go.
- 59:03Well these Saints really got out of that bad hole with that punt. 50 yarder by Blanchard and then the penalty of 15 yards. So they got out of a lot of trouble there.
- 59:13Indication there that if you keep the ball low against this wind down in the depths of this big stadium, you may not get into as much trouble as if you kick it high.
- 59:21Here's Bradshaw stopping short. Firing with the men's off the book ball. Larry Brown at the 44 yard line. Wide open down the middle. And he leaps into the air and kicks to his feet in this shot. Warrior veterans from Kansas had gone wide open straight down the middle.
- 59:37The pass appeared to be on the money and he couldn't hold it. And it falls incomplete. Well Larry is just beside himself with this catch because not only was the ball right there, not only was he wide open, but he had ample running room out ahead of him. The play I'm sure would have gone for at least 30 yards, maybe a lot more.
- 1:00:01Bradshaw has just 5 out of 10 passes. Two interceptions, 64 yards to one touchdown. That's far. Here is Jerry Bugsy. Jerry throws and it is broken up. Larry Brown at the 35 had it there and hooking an arm run and W. Lee.
- 1:00:19There was no indication from the official of dropping a flight with half interference, but I believe that Larry Bell felt he had been interfered with. I thought it was good defense actually, Jack. The guy managed to work his arm over Larry Brown's elbow there, getting behind him and made a really beautiful play Vivien Lee did.
- 1:00:39Howard Stevens deep. Chris Baratopoulos and Maurice Spencer back there. Bobby Walden standing at his own 11 yard line. Snap of the football, the front carries left to right and Walden gets away a boomer.
- 1:00:53And that's going to take Howard Stevens back to his own 22, gets down behind the 20, coming to the near side, coming up the side, out of the 25, to the 30 and throw it under at the 32, lost the football out of bounds. Of no effect whatsoever on the play.
- 1:01:09And that's Bradley over to make the stop along with Steve Burnett. He's a football continues after this brief timeout. With the wind that is back, Bobby Walden booms the ball 52 yards. The return is for nine yards.
- 1:01:25The Saints take over first down at their own 32 yard line and the score of course is 7-0 to the Steelers. The Saints thus far, and there are six minutes remaining in this first half, the Saints have not been able to mount much of an offense at all.
- 1:01:42The Jack is pointing out the Steelers seem very well prepared for the razzle-dazzle that the Saints repeatedly have tried to throw at them in the form of rather unusual formations, the double wing and lots of deep stuff, the deep handoffs, deep pitch and that sort of thing.
- 1:02:01But the Steelers defense has been up to it. One offense with 6-0-1 to play in the first half, Steelers leading 7-0. The New Orleans has its own 32 yard line. Double wing back with a split in out to the left side and a single running back and now the wing back, Jeff Phillips goes in motion to hand off to H. Jerry Alvin Maxson and he picks up yardage.
- 1:02:20The penalty marker goes down, about to fall up to the 36 and a half yard line again of about five yards, get a holding call against the New Orleans, that will be the first penalty on the Saints tonight.
- 1:02:31Elsie Greenwood made the tackle, 6-year veteran from Arkansas A.M. and M. and a 10 yard mark off coming up against the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:02:54Now he has it marking off 10. Takes it back to the 21 yard line. Holding, first penalty against New Orleans. So the Saints are looking at first down and 20 yards to go at their own 21 yard line.
- 1:03:10And let's see what they've got in that interior line. Paul Steel is still playing the tight end position, Joe Parker wide receiver. Thompson, Cupp, Gideon, Raisley and Morrison in the interior line.
- 1:03:24And here's the draw hand off and we've got him. Alvin Maxson coming ahead as they'll join to the line of scrimmage. Joe Green was there and waiting.
- 1:03:32And they will give him the 20 yard line for a loss of a yard. Back to the 20 yard line, it's second down and 21 yards to go.
- 1:03:41A draw hand off and Alvin Maxson had nowhere to go on that one. Joe Green was waiting. Jeff Phillips comes off the field.
- 1:03:52The Saints come out of the huddle. Paul Steel is set up for the squawk to the left inside Bob Millen. Joe Parker is out to the right.
- 1:04:03A single running back set up all alone and Archie Manning drops back to flow. Manning takes out of the pocket now throwing.
- 1:04:11The lines that open that intercepted by Andy Russell at the 30 yard line. The pass was intended for Johnny Beasley, inserted in for a running back and Andy Russell made the interception at the New Orleans 30 yard line.
- 1:04:23Archie Manning was under pressure. Thus far tonight he has not reacted well under pressure. Andy Russell comes up with the interception.
- 1:04:32He's the first one tonight for the Pittsburgh Steelers and for Andy Russell his first one of the season. And Archie Manning has been very inaccurate tonight.
- 1:04:41He has not been around to mark and that time he was short with the pass and an easy interception for Russell. Manning is 1 for 7, two interceptions, he's 8 yards.
- 1:04:54He's at the 30 and a half yard line and his fresh deep handoff to Steve Davis coming out the left side rambles to the 25 and goes down to the 22 yard line.
- 1:05:03Steve Davis getting out the left side with a block from Jerry Mullin. Manning's on the sideline as he ran into Tom Myers who brought him down.
- 1:05:11Now Andy Russell's interception is the 22nd of the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and as we told you, Russell's first of the year.
- 1:05:24Game of about 8 yards on the running play with Steve Davis. Randy Grossman has replaced Larry Brown at tight end.
- 1:05:30Larry Bradshaw the quarterback on second down 2 at the New Orleans 22, 430 to play in the first half.
- 1:05:36Here's the handoff fake. Bradshaw has the ball running to the right and he's going to keep running over the 20, the 15, down to the 10 and out of bounds on the near side of the field at the 10 yard line.
- 1:05:48Jim Marlowe chased him out of bounds and you can see the blockers waiting for a decision from Bradshaw.
- 1:05:55And out there was Mike Webster amidst a group of other Pittsburgh Steelers looking to see what Jerry's decision would be and he carried it down to the 10 yard line.
- 1:06:08Oh my, yeah, I would say to myself, run Jerry, run that. Oh, near side of the field was open here and you wanted the first sign.
- 1:06:16Of course that was the important thing and he got it with room to spare.
- 1:06:21Bradshaw back in his home state down here where he has a little ranch of his own, little quiet spot to cut hay, grow a few animals.
- 1:06:31Bradshaw gives it off to Franco. Franco meets with this and just off the right side we get a couple of yards to the 8.
- 1:06:37Dirlen Moore and Bob Pollard in at the bottom of the play, the Saints defense in the middle, very tough that time and the ball is marked at the 8 yard line. It's going to be second down and he can go.
- 1:06:52It appears, and I could be wrong, as though the sticks are short of the goal line, like you might pick up a first down inches short of the goal line.
- 1:07:02Once you get down that close it's not likely you'll need it. Here's Franco to the left, Shacklin flanking right.
- 1:07:09Pittsburgh leading 7 to nothing, 340 to play in the second quarter.
- 1:07:13Bradshaw takes, gives it to Steve Davis, cutting outside of the left. He's over the 5, he's down to the 3 yard line and not down.
- 1:07:23Jim Merlow and Joe Pettersfield were over there and Davis appeared to be stopped short for the 5 and puttied way over the 5 and finally comes down at the 3 yard line.
- 1:07:35It's going to be third down and 3 yards to go. Shacklin is out of the ball game and Larry Brown comes back as a second side in and here they are hurrying people onto the field.
- 1:07:45We've got Alex Price and Don Coleman coming on, cornerback Vivian Lee and Fakie man Tom Myers coming off.
- 1:07:53We've shifted another man with Doris going in to replace Johnny Puller and they've got their goal line defense in there, third and three.
- 1:08:02Bradshaw rolling right, Bradshaw throwing touchdown, Franco on the near side of the field and the penalty marker goes down.
- 1:08:10Can you believe that? Franco Harris got it for the touchdown and the penalty marker is going to be thrown against Randy Grossman.
- 1:08:20Interference against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:08:30If I were not going partial in my viewing of this ball game, I would have said there's a gigantic conspiracy out here to penalize us for laying to the field this time.
- 1:08:37Well I think they're calling Grossman for pushing off but in any event the Steelers lose the touchdown.
- 1:08:43It was a 3 yard pass, a nice catch it was thrown to Franco's inside. He had to come back a little for it, sort of twist around to make the catch but it doesn't count.
- 1:08:53The ball is pushed back to all the 17 and a half yard line.
- 1:08:58By the way Jack, Andy Russell's interception is second for the Steelers today, ties the Steelers for the league lead in interceptions with Oakland and Kansas City.
- 1:09:08So if they intercept one more tonight, they not only lead the league in sacks but also in interceptions.
- 1:09:14Please welcome the Steelers defense. Ball is back at the 17 and a half yard line, going to be third down and 17 and a half yards to go.
- 1:09:23Thanks to their normal defensive alignment, we have Collard Myers the back end, Jackson and Vivian Lee, Merlo, Fetter, Steele and Coleman, Billy Newsom, Bob Pollard, Derlin Moore and Joe Holland.
- 1:09:38And they're awaiting the Pittsburgh Steelers who are huddling discussing the situation.
- 1:09:43Fetter Steele has been over to talk with the coaching staff and he's back out there and Terry Bradshaw completes this conference with Chuck Knowles.
- 1:09:51Seven nothing ballgames, 2.47 to go in the first half. Pittsburgh is dominated but there hasn't been that much scoring.
- 1:10:00And I might point out that this is going to be a short week because the Houston Oilers are at Three Rivers Stadium next Sunday afternoon.
- 1:10:08And they dropped a 10-0 ballgame to Dallas yesterday, a very controversial play apparently.
- 1:10:15The Oilers insisting that on the Dallas touchdown, which was a dive from the one yard line, the Oilers insisting the Dallas ball carrier did not make it into the end zone.
- 1:10:25But anyhow it ended Houston's four-game winning streak.
- 1:10:30Frank Lewis to the left, Ron Shacklin to the right. Running back are Harrison Davis, Bradshaw the quarterback for the Steelers. In the 17 and a half yard line it is third down and Bradshaw backfental straight back deep now runs forward over the 20, the 15.
- 1:10:46He's down to the 10, the 5, he's going in for a touchdown. Bradshaw carries it down the middle.
- 1:10:51Gave it a little juked to the right side of the 10, cut back went right straight down the middle of the thing. Galloped into the end zone standing up and he is being congratulated.
- 1:11:01Frank O'Hara to his arms around Gary B. And the other members of the offensive unit over there are doing a great job. Well done.
- 1:11:09And Bradshaw took advantage of that situation. He's carried seven times tonight, 67 yards and now has added a touchdown.
- 1:11:19And for Gary Bradshaw that is the second touchdown of the season.
- 1:11:24Roy Jarrella is going to try for the point and there is a problem so they've taken a time out.
- 1:11:32And I'm not exactly sure what that problem is. Bobby Walden is going over there short of man.
- 1:11:37Well this happened too many times this year.
- 1:11:42But it gives me an opportunity to point out that Bradshaw made a great move at the seven yard line on linebacker Joe Fedderspil.
- 1:11:50Left Joe Fedderspil sprawled on his face. He had the shot at Bradshaw. He couldn't take the move and Bradshaw scored.
- 1:11:58Alright Jarrella will try for the point. Walden the holder. Pittsburgh leading 13 to nothing. The ball is down. Jarrella kicks it with the wind.
- 1:12:06It is good. It's a 14-winning ball game in favor of the Steelers who after Russell's interception took the football 30 yards in five plays.
- 1:12:15And Gary Bradshaw after the penalty is hanging it back to the 17 and a half yard line moved it straight down the middle.
- 1:12:22He dropped straight back the throw and then ran with the football and as Lyron told you gave it a great move right in the middle of the run.
- 1:12:29Right inside the 10 yard line and then galloped into the end zone unmolested and that was enough to make the New Orleans Saints fans cringe in their seats.
- 1:12:38And Terry knew he had to go all the way. He had to drive it up the middle of the ball field.
- 1:12:42Of course if he hadn't gone all the way they probably would have had an easy field goal but he wanted that touchback.
- 1:12:48The Steelers have used up two of their three timeouts now.
- 1:12:51There are two minutes and 38 seconds remaining in this first half. I don't think the use of their timeouts will prove to be important.
- 1:12:59Stevens and Spencer are deep and Howard Stevens under the ball five yards deep in the end zone. He'll kneel with it.
- 1:13:06Howard Steelers will take the automatic touchback.
- 1:13:09Two minutes 32 seconds.
- 1:13:1122nd quarter Pittsburgh 14 New Orleans 7. And the Saints are ready to move on offense right to left here.
- 1:13:28Rather cool night in New Orleans.
- 1:13:30But it's in the 30s by now, Dex, don't you think?
- 1:13:33I wouldn't question it at all.
- 1:13:35Be good to get back to Pittsburgh tonight where it's warm and snowy.
- 1:13:39What Lou? Are you a broadcaster on this team? What are you talking in this place for?
- 1:13:45Let's check our talkative spotter.
- 1:13:47Here you can use my microphone. What did you have to say?
- 1:13:50They're playing ball down there.
- 1:13:53They're playing football in New Orleans. Or no game whatsoever.
- 1:14:00Parker took the pass. He got back to the line of scrimmage of the 20 and Hamm and Thomas were there waiting for him.
- 1:14:11At halftime I'm going to resolve this matter of microphone jurisdiction.
- 1:14:19Well I'll tell you something, Craig. You know, you better mind your manners. You're not any bigger than Howard Stevens.
- 1:14:26And he says I'm not either.
- 1:14:31Well it's a good thing you're not flying home on the charter tonight, Myron, because you just might be without a seat.
- 1:14:38Yeah, that's right.
- 1:14:40First down, second down, down 10 yards to go and New Orleans will stop the clock with a time-out.
- 1:14:45The automatic time-out. Where's our commercial?
- 1:14:49I'll wait for the producers to inform you there's a break in the action. We'll be right back.
- 1:14:56Okay, two minutes remaining and a half. Here go the Saints from their own 20-yard line.
- 1:15:02Second down, 10 yards to go. A spot-right formation. Now they slip. They bring Joe Parker wide to the left.
- 1:15:08And move their spot back in closer on the right side. Manning rolls left.
- 1:15:12Throwing to the near side. E. Auburn throws his target. Good. Nice.
- 1:15:16At the 39-yard line, Parker's a side line. He's a good step-letter and the crowd is really wild.
- 1:15:22He threw it all the way into the Saints bench area. Mike Wagner with a pretty good cover on Parker.
- 1:15:27Could be that Archie Manning decided to just let it go that way rather than risk it.
- 1:15:33An interception at that point could give him much trouble. He is 2 for 9 with two interceptions and a total of 8 yards passing tonight.
- 1:15:43He was a great prospect. They say he was hurt by the lack of a quarterback coach here.
- 1:15:48They've now got Lamar McCann in working with him and supposed to have helped but tonight he's off the ball. He's inaccurate.
- 1:15:58Archie Manning back to throw. Manning fires the ball. Look out. It is intercepted. Picks off the stealers.
- 1:16:07Have it running with the foot. Now it's just a move. He's supposed to fall down into the 32-yard line.
- 1:16:17The ball was picked off by J.P. Thomas who is running with it. He fumbled a good ball.
- 1:16:27I think Edwards Burnett's running up with the ball.
- 1:16:30When Edwards was recovering, J.P. Thomas intercepted the ball. It's back to the 32-yard line.
- 1:16:40It is going to be first down and 10. The stealers now lead the league in interception.
- 1:16:46Archie Manning made the tackle on the play. That was his contribution after throwing the interception.
- 1:16:53Here is Bradshaw bootlegging. He's dropping back. Banging on the fireside. Almost not by Steve Davis.
- 1:17:00Can't hold it. At the 15-yard line on the runway, and Coleman coming over to cover.
- 1:17:05Bradshaw's fault pass of the night. Manning has now thrown three interceptions.
- 1:17:11J.P. Thomas, he picked it off, gets his step interception tying him with Lynn Edwards.
- 1:17:17The stealers now have 23 interceptions on the season, as Myron told you. That brings them right up to the top.
- 1:17:27Second down, 10. Rock shows a minute 36. The height and the distance here made it almost impossible for me to tell what had happened after J.P.
- 1:17:37ran into some people down there. Again, a scramble for the football.
- 1:17:43Second down to the left, Lewis. Blanker, right, Shanklin. Bradshaw drops straight back.
- 1:17:48Bradshaw looks, looks, looks, looks. Manning a time, throws for the end zone, and a crowd there. This batter away incomplete.
- 1:17:55His target was Ronnie Shanklin, double coverage on him from Ernie Jackson and John Myers.
- 1:18:00And the pass is deflected over the end line and out of play.
- 1:18:04Rock is down to a minute 27. Ball comes back to the 32-yard line in possession of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:18:11Third down, 10 yards to go in Orleans territory.
- 1:18:14I tell you, Bradshaw could have caught a bus. He had so much time to throw that ball. Did they ever give him protection?
- 1:18:22Shanklin is down and Lynn Swarmer's in.
- 1:18:26Number one draft choice, rookie from Southern California. He's been hampered by an injured finger.
- 1:18:33He flips right. Lewis is out to the left. And we got Bradshaw back and throwing to the near side.
- 1:18:41And on a comeback at the sideline, incomplete at the 21. As Warren, covered by Ernie Jackson, cannot hold on to the football,
- 1:18:48appeared to be over the sideline anyway. And Bradshaw's 14 yards of the night goes incomplete.
- 1:18:54And now with the win behind him, Roy Giordano is going to try to add three more points to the Pittsburgh lead.
- 1:19:00Minute 22. This will be some kind of a kick. Bobby Walden kneeling at the 39. It would make it a 49-yard kick.
- 1:19:08But the win, for whatever it might be worth down there, is behind Giorello.
- 1:19:14And Giorello will be kicking from the 39, a 49-yard attempt. And Giorello has it in the air straight away.
- 1:19:21And it comes down short. In the first, a little too much tension.
- 1:19:29So the field goal fly is unsuccessful.
- 1:19:34Somebody has left the safe and hard dog down on the field.
- 1:19:40Got the match down to the sink.
- 1:19:45That is going crazy. He has an army of snakes.
- 1:19:48Side two.
- 1:19:55Bobby Scott at quarterback. They're making a quick.
- 1:19:59It is going to be Bobby Scott at quarterback.
- 1:20:05They're playing the quarterback game in New Orleans tonight.
- 1:20:08At the 32-yard line.
- 1:20:11Here's the handoff.
- 1:20:12Carried forward over the left side by Jack Phillips, fighting his way to the 34-yard line.
- 1:20:19Whitebite and Jack Gamm on the top.
- 1:20:21Bobby Scott, three of the veterans from Tennessee.
- 1:20:25The 6'1", 200-pound, 25-years-old.
- 1:20:29Second down and eight yards to go.
- 1:20:32Locket turning with 54 seconds to play in the first half.
- 1:20:36Joe Parker to the right, Bob Neal into the left, and a fair setback.
- 1:20:40Bobby Scott directs the attack.
- 1:20:42Gives the ball out to Alvin Maxson.
- 1:20:44Finds no running room as he is hit.
- 1:20:46The ball is out on the white team.
- 1:20:51Coming into the middle of the line.
- 1:20:54Penalty marker down. Up at the New Orleans, 43-yard line.
- 1:20:59Apparently against Pittsburgh, it goes to J.P. Thomas.
- 1:21:02He's stamping his foot in disgust.
- 1:21:04Personal foul against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:21:10The 45-yard line is ready to step off 15 yards.
- 1:21:17The New Orleans would have a minimum of first downs tonight
- 1:21:20had it not been for the penalties, two automatic first downs.
- 1:21:24This one will give the things a first down.
- 1:21:27The Saints may have more yardage and penalties in their favor
- 1:21:30than they've got in total offense.
- 1:21:33It'll be interesting to see.
- 1:21:36And this takes the ball up near the 50-yard line,
- 1:21:39and it's off to Pittsburgh's territory.
- 1:21:41Pittsburgh has been penalized a total of 65 yards.
- 1:21:46And we'll take a look in a few moments at the things total offense.
- 1:21:52Here they come out of the huddle.
- 1:21:55They have 8 yards rushing, 29 yards, or rather 8 yards cashing,
- 1:21:5929 rushing, so they have made more of a penalty
- 1:22:01than they have in their offense.
- 1:22:03Here is the pass to far side and complete.
- 1:22:06This one is pretty darn good.
- 1:22:09A great rush.
- 1:22:10That's on the puttler right now.
- 1:22:11We've got a penalty marker going down.
- 1:22:14The pass is complete.
- 1:22:15This one is going to be after the play.
- 1:22:17Bob Mueller went down and over to the sideline,
- 1:22:20and J.P. Thomas made the defensive play on it.
- 1:22:23He caught the pass at the sideline.
- 1:22:25Should have a first down, but back up field,
- 1:22:28a penalty marker goes down, and there's a discussion.
- 1:22:32We're awaiting the preliminary signal.
- 1:22:35First foul to Orleans.
- 1:22:37First foul to Pittsburgh.
- 1:22:38They say no play.
- 1:22:40Now they're going to keep the ball down there.
- 1:22:48The official signal, off-setting penalty.
- 1:22:51Jack, now he's signaling a first down.
- 1:22:54They may have thrown Steve Burnett out of the game.
- 1:22:56I'm not sure, but he's off the field on the sideline.
- 1:23:01I think he was involved in the monkey shines on the line.
- 1:23:05The off-setting penalties do not involve the play coming after the play,
- 1:23:10and he did not give us that indication.
- 1:23:12Here's a pass from a man coming out of the back field,
- 1:23:14Howard Stevens, going to the 35.
- 1:23:18And the one is we use a timeout.
- 1:23:20Tackle made by Lauren J.
- 1:23:22So what we saw, simply off-setting penalties after the play.
- 1:23:32Mike Widener with the personal foul, as far as the Steelers are concerned.
- 1:23:38Let's see, probably that's because of the 33 defense.
- 1:23:41The pass against the defense, that's all.
- 1:23:43He was not thrown out of the game.
- 1:23:45He's got a fourth line back to Lauren J. Zimair.
- 1:23:47So Scott is now 2 for 2 for 16 yards on the evening.
- 1:23:57Archie Manning, 3 for 10 with three interceptions, 8 yards.
- 1:24:03And the Saints have moved the ball to the Pittsburgh 34-yard line.
- 1:24:06It is second down and about 5 yards to go.
- 1:24:0926 seconds remaining to play in the first half.
- 1:24:14And they are warming up their field goal kitchen.
- 1:24:17That does not show a great deal of confidence in their offense.
- 1:24:20You know, kind of an unusual thing, taking your quarterback out,
- 1:24:24with only a minute and 12 seconds remaining in the first half,
- 1:24:27you don't see that very often.
- 1:24:29Usually if the quarterback's going sour,
- 1:24:32the coach will ride with them at least until halftime and then make the switch.
- 1:24:36But we've seen it done the other way tonight,
- 1:24:39and I don't believe Manning was hurt so huge.
- 1:24:44No difference.
- 1:24:45Gary Gerson says, in effect, John North is unusual.
- 1:24:49Well, he was accused of being too conservative,
- 1:24:51but in recent weeks he's been anything but.
- 1:24:54Second down, 5.
- 1:24:56Bobby Scott, the quarterback now in place of Archie Manning,
- 1:24:59has completed two passes.
- 1:25:00Scott drops straight back.
- 1:25:01Manow rolls right.
- 1:25:02Look, look, look, look, throws.
- 1:25:05And he overthrows into the band.
- 1:25:09That one could have been caught by an usher and carried out into the green.
- 1:25:13Bob Newland was the intended receiver.
- 1:25:16Elsie Greenwood was on the run in pursuit of the quarterback,
- 1:25:21and that will be the 13th pass by New Orleans.
- 1:25:24Clocked down to 19 seconds.
- 1:25:26Third down and 5 for the Saints.
- 1:25:28Operating at Pittsburgh, 34 Steelers leading 14 to nothing.
- 1:25:32And the way this first half is moving,
- 1:25:34this might be one of those Monday night games that goes until 1230 at night.
- 1:25:38Why are you rubbing your hands together?
- 1:25:40Are you cold?
- 1:25:41My hands are cold.
- 1:25:43Bill Buffer is due to the running back.
- 1:25:48Here is Bobby Scott dropping back.
- 1:25:51And just a ball away it is.
- 1:25:53Broken up, I believe, by Andy Russell.
- 1:25:55Had a great rush on him.
- 1:25:57Andy Russell's got a hand on the ball.
- 1:25:59Yes, Andy Russell had the blitz going,
- 1:26:01and he was right on top of Scott.
- 1:26:04Scott just got rid of it and wanted no part of it.
- 1:26:08We'll be back after this pause on the Steelers football network.
- 1:26:15New Orleans, 4 down.
- 1:26:18Bobby Scott drops back.
- 1:26:20Scott fires down the middle and it is deflected.
- 1:26:23Brett Edwards up in the air to get a hand on a pass and get it for the fight.
- 1:26:27And Paul Steel, around the 25-yard line.
- 1:26:30It is incomplete.
- 1:26:32And the Steelers take over with 11 seconds remaining on the clock in the second quarter.
- 1:26:37Planning to run over those passing figures for you.
- 1:26:42Archie Manning, we show, with 2 for 10, 3 interceptions, 8 yards.
- 1:26:47And Scott, 2 out of 5, for 16 yards.
- 1:26:52Giving New Orleans 4 out of 15 on the night with 3 interceptions.
- 1:27:01Jerry Bradshaw gives the ball to Franco, trying to get outside of the left.
- 1:27:05Touchback, he's coming forward over the 40 and up to the 43-yard line.
- 1:27:10Franco here short of a burst down by about 2 yards.
- 1:27:14Scott is going to run up.
- 1:27:16We're having the first half of the ballgame. Doris Pittsburgh, 14, New Orleans, nothing.
- 1:27:23Okay, we're ready to kick off.
- 1:27:25Girella tees it up at the 35-yard line.
- 1:27:28And we've got New Orleans aligned to receive a kickoff.
- 1:27:33There comes the official out of the football.
- 1:27:37You had a reminder over there, did you?
- 1:27:38Yes, a reminder that pilot season tickets for 1975 are now on sale for as little as 52.50.
- 1:27:45That's quite a great Christmas gift.
- 1:27:48And now Girella will put the ball down.
- 1:27:51And Richard Winden is back, probably deep into the end zone as he did the last time, taking advantage of that strong wind.
- 1:27:59Jack, you put on an overcoat.
- 1:28:01That's right, I got it on now.
- 1:28:08Girella is ready.
- 1:28:12I'm not sure what's going on, but I've got a feeling that we're having an enforced timeout here.
- 1:28:18Lengthen so that certain people can get their commercials on the air.
- 1:28:22Here comes Girella.
- 1:28:24And he kicks it very high.
- 1:28:26Coming down relatively short to the HDI line, Howard Stevens, 15 to 20, caught and brought down as he crosses the 25-yard line by Reggie Garrett.
- 1:28:35Reggie Garrett becoming the number one headhunter of the Steelers, the 6'1", 172, a streak of lightning from Eastern Michigan.
- 1:28:42Lies in to that little fella and brings him down at the 27-yard line.
- 1:28:46A 19-yard return.
- 1:28:48And Reggie, of course, is a rookie.
- 1:28:50He was a free agent.
- 1:28:51His brother plays for the Saints.
- 1:28:52The Saints tried to sign him, I understand.
- 1:28:55But no, he didn't sign with his brother, he seemed to sign with the Steelers.
- 1:28:58And that was a surprise because they were deep in receivers.
- 1:29:02Bobby Scott is back again.
- 1:29:04The run into Allianz attack.
- 1:29:06Slot right from the eye.
- 1:29:07Gives the ball off.
- 1:29:08Alvin Maxson going to the near side and it's Corral knocked out of bounds at the 30-yard line.
- 1:29:14Mel Blunt in fire pursuit.
- 1:29:17Aided by Andy Russell.
- 1:29:18Blunt, the five-year veteran from Southern U, 6'3", 205 pounds.
- 1:29:22Southern played Grambling on Saturday on this field here.
- 1:29:26And they drew a tremendous crowd of supporters for this big Southern football classic.
- 1:29:34Grambling won a 21-0 before 74,000 people here.
- 1:29:37Yeah, and they had about that many for Tulane LSU at Baton Rouge.
- 1:29:40And now the crowd of over 70,000 here all this on the weekend.
- 1:29:4567,000 at Baton Rouge, 74,000 here, 70,000.
- 1:29:49A football flourish is in the south end on the handoff to Jess Phillips.
- 1:29:53Scott, going to the line of scrimmage and fights his way forward and he'll pick up yardage.
- 1:29:58Andy Russell finally brought him down at the 33-2-yard gain.
- 1:30:05Going to be third down and about three yards to go.
- 1:30:09You, Greg, if we could fly out of here a lot about 12-30, Allianz time,
- 1:30:15we'll be two and a half hour flight back, two hours.
- 1:30:18That takes us back in there at about 2-30 to three, Wallenstein, 3-30 to 4, Pittsburgh time.
- 1:30:24It's a lovely way to spend an early morning.
- 1:30:27Here is Bobby and trouble, he is back at the 20-yard line and the man who had him was Joe Green.
- 1:30:34Joe Green had him by the arm and was in the process of bringing him down.
- 1:30:38And Elsie Greenwood came over to help out, but Joe Green will get the sack.
- 1:30:43And for the mean man, that is his second and I give him nine and a half on the season.
- 1:30:51Okay, Edwards and Swan are deep and Tom Blanchard will punch.
- 1:30:55When the Wallenstein follows at the 19-yard line,
- 1:30:59I think the offense has been pretty well corralled throughout the evening.
- 1:31:04Blanchard's standing at his own six.
- 1:31:07Gets the snap, gets the football, low trajectory, good punch.
- 1:31:11Backing up to take it, Lynn Swan at his own 38, running wide with the outside line over the 45,
- 1:31:16the 50, look at the speed, here he comes down the side line over the 30, the 30.
- 1:31:20Swan is going to go all the way for a pitch for catch down.
- 1:31:23Lynn Swan took the puck at his own 38-yard line,
- 1:31:28headed to the far side line and they had a lane for him.
- 1:31:32And Swan turned on the speed.
- 1:31:34That's the first really good look we've seen at the rookie
- 1:31:38on Southern California, 62 yards on the return.
- 1:31:42And the big play, what do you think of that one?
- 1:31:44Well, you might even give him two more yards on it, Jack.
- 1:31:46He may have been back even at the 36.
- 1:31:49Joe Green took a guy out on the far side line, Bill Butler,
- 1:31:53that was the guy who had the chance at one and Joe Plastom, I believe it was Joe.
- 1:31:58Roy Jarrella kicks for the point after.
- 1:32:01Roy Jarrella hits the point after.
- 1:32:05Lynn Swan has gone an earlier touchdown passing in the season.
- 1:32:10This is the second touchdown of the year, second of his professional career.
- 1:32:15And the Steelers move out to a 21-0 lead.
- 1:32:18Now there's a break in the action at New Orleans.
- 1:32:20We'll be right back.
- 1:32:25Well, the Saints who last weekend whipped the Los Angeles Rams,
- 1:32:30now trailing the Steelers 21-0 in his Jarrellas kickoff.
- 1:32:34And he kicks it very well.
- 1:32:36And over in, back into the end zone,
- 1:32:38Stevens bobbles it around, Paul's run up to the automatic touchdown.
- 1:32:44Roy Jarrella kicks it very well with the Steelers.
- 1:32:49That brings Jack Hart, wonder, getting retriever out on the field.
- 1:32:55And Jackie is back over to the other side.
- 1:32:58How many years have you been with the Steelers?
- 1:33:00I don't know, but I mean, let's get out there and get a quick look.
- 1:33:04Jack Hart who handles the equipment in charge of the field.
- 1:33:08I grew up with Art Rooney Jr.
- 1:33:10and they used to stuff each other in garbage cans over on the north side.
- 1:33:14Is that right?
- 1:33:15Yeah.
- 1:33:17All right, New Orleans ready to go, trailing 21-0.
- 1:33:20Bobby's got the quarterback, second man through, takes the football.
- 1:33:23That's Jeff Phillips, and he'll pick up about 3 1 half yards on the play.
- 1:33:29Jack Lambert, rookie from Kent State.
- 1:33:33And as I understand it, a potential candidate for rookie of the year.
- 1:33:38Who's that? I was looking up how many years Jack Hart's been with the Steelers.
- 1:33:42Jack's flat.
- 1:33:43I can't find it.
- 1:33:44Oh, Jack's flat's a good one.
- 1:33:47We are gained third and seventh.
- 1:33:51Now they have a flanker to the right, split end to the left.
- 1:33:54And here's the handoff going to Maxam.
- 1:33:57He's coming to the left, turns the corner out over the 30 to 35,
- 1:34:00and he goes to the 36 yard line.
- 1:34:02Maxam, and Edwards making the stop.
- 1:34:07First down for the thing, 13-yard gate.
- 1:34:11Think they're doing something that might make a profit out of me.
- 1:34:14They're going to bread and butter football now.
- 1:34:17Not that I would even propose to be in a class with John North at Mapping Strategy,
- 1:34:23not even near it.
- 1:34:26I'll tell you one thing, they've done better throughout the evening
- 1:34:29when they've stuck to good solid football and left the razzle-dazzle behind.
- 1:34:36Now here they are again with a straight flanker, right, split end left.
- 1:34:40He's got back, and the quarterback's got back the throw,
- 1:34:44and he fires too high, near side.
- 1:34:47Intended for Joel Parker at 5th third, 43 on the sideline.
- 1:34:51He was covered by Grant Edwards.
- 1:34:53Pass was thrown too high, carried out of bounds, incomplete.
- 1:34:56Well, he wanted to go to Alvin Max and a running back coming out of the backfield,
- 1:35:01but he was picked up very nicely by the stealer defense,
- 1:35:04so got through a little deeper than he wanted to.
- 1:35:11What if you'd check, Myron, you've got the glasses,
- 1:35:13and who's doing all that throwing over there behind the stealer bench there?
- 1:35:16Maybe they're just keeping Terry Bradshaw warm.
- 1:35:19Yeah, that's Bradshaw.
- 1:35:21He's just staying warm. Got back just short there after him.
- 1:35:24He throws complete under pressure, beautiful pass down to the Pittsburgh 48 stop-up,
- 1:35:29Paul Field. Great rush.
- 1:35:31I want to look back here and tell you about it.
- 1:35:33Dwight White was in there coming in on the play.
- 1:35:39Grant Edwards made the stop-down field at the Pittsburgh 43-yard line,
- 1:35:43a 21-yard pass play with Paul Field, a rookie from Michigan, the receiver.
- 1:35:48Now, Scott, very cool that time, had a big, big rush on him.
- 1:35:52That pass on the money for the Saints of the advance in the Pittsburgh territory.
- 1:35:58Flop right formation. They run out of the eye this time,
- 1:36:01and to give us to the inside back, Alvin Maxum.
- 1:36:04Well, he's turning ahead down over the 40s down to the Pittsburgh 39-yard line.
- 1:36:08Joe Green and L.C. Greenwoods team up on the stop for the stealers,
- 1:36:13and the Saints will pick up about four yards, call it second down and six.
- 1:36:20I do not think we'll see arrowhead Holmes at all tonight,
- 1:36:23and that's a pro to him because he wants that Monday night exposure.
- 1:36:26He wants that publicity that brings all pro runners.
- 1:36:29That's why he drew his hair in the shape of an arrow,
- 1:36:32so he's missing out on the Monday night exposure.
- 1:36:35Rod McNeil, a rookie running back from Southern Cowell,
- 1:36:38is in the ball game for the first time. He's been listed as injured,
- 1:36:41and the handoff is Jim McNeil.
- 1:36:44He gets short yardage.
- 1:36:48They said that he would probably not play.
- 1:36:50Fernes and Lambert work together on the stop, two yards gain on the play,
- 1:36:56third down and four yards to go for New Orleans, and they're at the Pittsburgh 37.
- 1:37:01See, Fernes doesn't look like a drag down there tonight.
- 1:37:04He's not hurting the stealers one bit.
- 1:37:07Am I wrong? In recollection, we'll see one of the veterans who reported in
- 1:37:11and played in this game down here before played extremely well against the Saints.
- 1:37:14Yeah, I believe it was here. I think that was the game right here.
- 1:37:17What a good game here.
- 1:37:19Here is Sacks back at the 50-yard line, and it's Steve Fernes.
- 1:37:23We were just talking about him.
- 1:37:26I would say that was a very timely conversation.
- 1:37:28They will spot the ball at the 49-yard line, and a sack for Steve Fernes.
- 1:37:34The fifth sack of the ball game for the stealers.
- 1:37:37Oh, great cow. They've got a total of 45 on this season.
- 1:37:40Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:37:43Hello, this is Larry O'Brien, and I'd like to hear every morning to start your day with a fun way.
- 1:37:47Come meet the A.D. and your member from Pittsburgh.
- 1:37:53Thank you, Punctual Nation. Tom Blanchard will kick the football.
- 1:37:57Edwards and Klaun are deep for Pittsburgh, and here is the punch coming in short
- 1:38:02inside the 20, bounding over to the side of the field, such as the Saints.
- 1:38:06Picked up by Klaun, dives forward, gets two or three yards out of it to the 14-yard line.
- 1:38:11I've noticed he's showing you what will happen if you let the ball bounce around.
- 1:38:15Lynn Klaun, an opportunist, and he just picked it up and dived forward for about three yards,
- 1:38:21and Don Coleman got on him and stopped him, and the ball is just short of the 14-yard line.
- 1:38:27Got a break in the action down on the field. We'll be right back.
- 1:38:32I'm not a big fan of basketball, but I'm a big fan of basketball.
- 1:39:00...General Elective Hamilton, Baldy, come in right now.
- 1:39:03Fabulous feelings of appliances, radios, giftwares, even jewelry.
- 1:39:06Basketball designers talk about inflation. Check master prices and compare.
- 1:39:10You can whip inflation right now during the giant 20th anniversary sale.
- 1:39:14Now on to win it all back to the showroom.
- 1:39:17Check more white pages for the showroom mirror's view.
- 1:39:34Nine minutes and 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:39:37The steer is leading 21 to nothing, and here's Jack Fleming.
- 1:39:40John McMacon, veteran at tight end who was injured throughout much of the early part of the season,
- 1:39:45is in the ball game.
- 1:39:47And off is given to Steve Davis and Big Steve.
- 1:39:50Piles just off the left side out over the 15, he'll pick up about five yards, runs into Alex Price.
- 1:39:56Second year man from Alcorn State, linebacker Joe Feddersfield.
- 1:40:00Three year man from Kentucky, the ball is marked just short of the 19 yard line,
- 1:40:06again a five second down and five to go.
- 1:40:08I'm not saying that this game is locked up, but I want to toss some interesting figures here away
- 1:40:14as soon as I have an opportunity.
- 1:40:16Alrighty, we've got Shacklin set to the right, Frank Lewis out to the left,
- 1:40:21shifts him off the IA formation.
- 1:40:24Here's Brad Shaw giving the ball to Franco to the outside of the left.
- 1:40:27He traps, cuts forward, runs two people over the 25, the 30, and arms a 32 yard line as he bumbled it.
- 1:40:33He has and New Orleans recovered.
- 1:40:36Boxed the field from it, Franco lost the football.
- 1:40:39And the New Orleans Saints come up with it.
- 1:40:43First turnover of that nature tonight for the Steelers.
- 1:40:48And New Orleans has the ball at the 31 and a half yard line.
- 1:40:52Jim Merlo recovered the fumble for the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:40:56And they have a first and tenet for 31 and a half.
- 1:40:59Franco, who went for over 100 yards against Cleveland,
- 1:41:02fumbled several times in that game as a fight he wasn't concentrating enough.
- 1:41:06He fumbled again now.
- 1:41:09All right, Bobby Scott is running the New Orleans attack.
- 1:41:12And he hands the ball off to Alvin Maxson.
- 1:41:14Getting outside of the left over the 30, the 25, the 20, breaks the tackle,
- 1:41:17goes to 15, runs all the way down to the 12 yard line.
- 1:41:21Alvin Maxson running through people.
- 1:41:24Ships off, Beryl Blunt.
- 1:41:26Finally, Mike Wagner got him.
- 1:41:28He runs to Jack Ham, who gave him some help on the play, and Elsie Greenwood was over there.
- 1:41:3418 yards run.
- 1:41:36Alvin Maxson, the rookie from Southern Methodist University,
- 1:41:41carrying the mail for the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:41:43And Maxson came into this ballgame with 300 yards total on the season.
- 1:41:54And now 11 carries for 63 to give to Maxson, again, nowhere to go this time.
- 1:41:59I'll tell you what, a suffering defender slowed him down.
- 1:42:04Elsie Greenwood, and then Green grabbed him.
- 1:42:08Elsie is the man who put the initial hit on him.
- 1:42:13Give him two yards as he struggled around in the pileup at second down the knee.
- 1:42:17This Maxson is a chunky rookie out of SMU 511-205.
- 1:42:22Jack Nolte, very impressed with him on film, says he runs with a lot of power.
- 1:42:27Bob Newland lines up out to the right as a flanker.
- 1:42:30Joel Parker splits to the nearside.
- 1:42:33And the handoff is given to Jess Phillips running to the right.
- 1:42:36And he's in trouble at the 10 yard line.
- 1:42:39Jack Ham got the first lick at him.
- 1:42:43Joe Green helped him up off the floor of the stadium at the 10 yard line.
- 1:42:50So it's going to be a gain of about a yard, third down and seven for the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:42:56And they bring the little guy, Howard Stevens, onto the field.
- 1:43:035'5", 165 pounds.
- 1:43:06They're one. They're one.
- 1:43:10If it's a high one, I can call him one.
- 1:43:13Split in left, flanker right.
- 1:43:15Running back set wide.
- 1:43:17There's Bobby Scott back to throw. Lobs it into the end of the field.
- 1:43:20Too long. And it's taken no, it's blunt right up against the wall.
- 1:43:24Plus, made the interception out of bounds. Incomplete pass.
- 1:43:27Joel Parker, the intended receiver, overthrown.
- 1:43:30And that's a blunt right up against the fence. I shouldn't say the wall.
- 1:43:34Face first into that fence. He really hit that thing. I hope he's not hurt.
- 1:43:38Boy, I'll tell you something, the run that time, 5'5", Howard Stevens,
- 1:43:43you should have seen him try to block white, white.
- 1:43:46He was back there for pass protection, and he sort of waved on quite a little
- 1:43:51and then ran for his right.
- 1:43:56Fourth down, seven at the 10-yard line.
- 1:44:00New Orleans going for it.
- 1:44:02Brailing 21 to nothing. Got his back, firing to the end zone, fireside.
- 1:44:06He hits his man right at the goal line. Joel Parker has it down.
- 1:44:10He's going to go into a crowd of people. Wow. J.T. Thomas was right there.
- 1:44:23It was Paul Field. The tight end, not Joel Parker.
- 1:44:29Right on the goal line, Paul Field, the rookie from Michigan.
- 1:44:36That was the first touchdown of the evening for New Orleans,
- 1:44:40and Field explored his second touchdown of the year.
- 1:44:45And the point after try is up there. Bill McClard hits it.
- 1:44:50We have a 21-7 ball game with the Steelers in the lead.
- 1:44:54The Steelers football continues after this brief timeout.
- 1:44:59It is called out, but there are plenty of 50-yard line seats at Buddies in Market Square,
- 1:45:03the only place on time for a 50-yard line seat to watch the Pitt-Penn State game
- 1:45:08on Buddies' ad-bent video beam night-size television from Opus One.
- 1:45:12And after the game, joining the fun with the good-time close horse, Coach Joe Avizzano.
- 1:45:17Remember, two weekdays, Buddies is a pleasant place to lunch and enjoy our idation.
- 1:45:22Buddies, the only place to be after every game. Or for lunch.
- 1:45:26Buddies in Market Square.
- 1:45:29Okay, the Saints have made it to the scoreboard. They now trail the Steelers 21-7.
- 1:45:34Just before they got that ball on a Franco Harris fumble and proceeded to go in for a score,
- 1:45:40I was about to say that while I'm not saying the game was rocked up,
- 1:45:44it so happens that when the Saints scored 20 points last weekend through uptip with Los Angeles Rams,
- 1:45:50it was the first time they had scored 20 points since 1970.
- 1:45:55And with the Steelers leading 21-0, well, you could almost think the game was rocked up,
- 1:46:01because that's what kind of offense the Saints have had.
- 1:46:04But here they come back with the score after the Franco Harris fumble,
- 1:46:08which was at the Steeler 32-yard line.
- 1:46:12They connected on a 10-yard pass to Paul Steel, and now the Saints are ready to kick off.
- 1:46:17Jack?
- 1:46:18Okay, we've got Steve Davidson, no blunt deep, and the Saints kick it very high,
- 1:46:23and on short, taken by Blum on the run at the 20 to the 25 to 30, and he runs into the fumble.
- 1:46:29At the 30, Steve goes down at the 33-yard line, and Don Coleman, first man to grab him.
- 1:46:36And the ball is out around the 33-yard line. Let's see where they uncover.
- 1:46:40We're about three miles away from that field.
- 1:46:43That's the 33-yard line.
- 1:46:4771,907 here tonight. Beautiful game.
- 1:47:00So for the weekend, they put over 140,000 in here to keep the game.
- 1:47:05There's a handoff of Steve Davis. Good block for him, and then it closes down,
- 1:47:09and he comes down at the 35-yard line, running out to the left. Billy Newton made the tackle.
- 1:47:15Got a good initial block, and then the blocking falls.
- 1:47:19Picks up two yards, second down eight.
- 1:47:21I'm sorry, Jack, but I don't buy that attendance figure.
- 1:47:2471,907 means 10,000 empty seats, and if you can find 10,000 empty seats in here,
- 1:47:30I don't know. It looks like almost a full house to me.
- 1:47:35Maybe they've got a few freebies in here tonight.
- 1:47:39What base?
- 1:47:41But in the squad, it's in the ball game as a wide receiver for the Steelers.
- 1:47:45Frank Lewis is the other one, shifting the running back.
- 1:47:49Brad Shaw is back deep to throw. Brad Shaw runs forward with a football pick.
- 1:47:53The Blackers over to 40, the 45, and drop down around the 47-yard line.
- 1:47:59Jerry Bradshaw finally stopped by Joe Fetter Spiele. He'll have a first down.
- 1:48:04He has been a tremendous weapon with his timely running tonight.
- 1:48:09Follard and Fetter Spiele on the tackle, and the ball is being spotted around the 47-yard line.
- 1:48:18John Stawers is on as a wide receiver. Two rookies, John and Stawers for the Steelers.
- 1:48:23Hey, Jack, I think Brad Shaw has about 93 yards rushing. He might have a hundred yard game, won't he?
- 1:48:31We have him unofficially over here, 8 for 81.
- 1:48:34He had 80 in the first half officially.
- 1:48:37Here is a handoff now to Steve Davis, hitting straight ahead over the left side.
- 1:48:41He's up over the 50 and down to the 49-yard line.
- 1:48:47Bob Pollard makes the tackle on him, and he's crossed the 50-yard line.
- 1:48:52A gain of around 4 1⁄2 yards, second down, and a short six.
- 1:48:59Brad Shaw had 80, 6 for 80 in the first half, so we'll correct him.
- 1:49:04I think he had a 13-yard gain on that play.
- 1:49:07That brings him up to about 93 yards.
- 1:49:09Go for a hybrid, Terry.
- 1:49:11Second down, short six. Just across the 50 in the Walling's territory, Steelers leading 21 to 7.
- 1:49:18Brad Shaw takes a handoff, pitch off for left side to Franco Harris, and Harris cuts down to the 45 and on to the 44.
- 1:49:26He's short of a third down. Brad Shaw running the rollout option to the left side with Harris trailing.
- 1:49:34Wayne Coleman makes the stop.
- 1:49:37We've seen just about everything in this ballgame tonight.
- 1:49:40You got the play all wrong. That was Billy Daniels pitching out to Tony Dorsett.
- 1:49:44That's exactly what it looked like.
- 1:49:47The fake to Davis, the pitch-outs on the option play, that's to Franco.
- 1:49:52Larry Brown enters the ballgame, replacing Lynn Swan.
- 1:49:56We have two tight ends in there, John McMakin and Larry Brown on third and one.
- 1:50:0121-7, 329 to play in the third quarter.
- 1:50:04Steelers leading ends tight, flanker right.
- 1:50:07Running back to Harrison Davis.
- 1:50:09Brad Shaw giving to Franco, and he gets off the left side, gallops to the 40, breaks the tackle to the 35, and out of bounds at the 31-yard line.
- 1:50:17Finally cased off by Johnny Fuller, the strong safety.
- 1:50:21And he has a first down, and the Steelers running game is moving the football.
- 1:50:26Down to the 31-yard line, a 13-yard game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:50:33And Bob Davis and Harris running well tonight.
- 1:50:36Rocky Blyer is down there in reserve.
- 1:50:40But any time you go into a game, you'll miss the services of Frankie Fuqua and Princeton Pearson who are hospitalized back in Pittsburgh, and we do hope that they're out of there very soon.
- 1:50:50And now the second one is back into the ballgame.
- 1:50:52Franco is 11 for 69 yards tonight.
- 1:50:55Here is Brad Shaw, a quick handoff inside and taking the ball, coming out side to the right is Franco, 20-15, and out of bounds at the 11-yard line.
- 1:51:04Johnny Fuller chased him out.
- 1:51:06That appeared to be a hit straight ahead.
- 1:51:10And suddenly Franco dared to be outside, turned on his speed, and with his great running ability,
- 1:51:16he's outside the sideline and finally escapes out at the 11- or 20-yard game, and now New Orleans has fired this ballclub.
- 1:51:22Leading 21-0, there might have been just a notion that it was wrapped up.
- 1:51:27New Orleans comes down to score from 32 yards out, and now the Steelers come firing back, and they're doing it all well.
- 1:51:34Brad Shaw lines them up at the 11-yard line.
- 1:51:39The running backs are set wide.
- 1:51:42And again it is Franco hitting off the right side and diving down to the 7-yard line, maybe to 6.
- 1:51:48Billy Newsom on the stop, and Joe Fettersfield comes out of the play, and they're going to spot the football at the 7-yard line.
- 1:51:56Give Franco 4 yards from the 11 down to the 7. It's going to be second down and 6.
- 1:52:02Franco is just running beautifully.
- 1:52:04Two plays ago he gained 19 yards on a play that was all freelance.
- 1:52:07Headed up the middle, he took off for the outside, it was all freelance work. Beautiful. He has great lateral vision.
- 1:52:1413 carries, 93 yards.
- 1:52:18Good job to Franco, running to the left. He doesn't need it. He gallops over, a man goes inside the 5, and he's down to the 3, maybe the 2, and Jim Merlo finally making the tackle on him.
- 1:52:28Tom Myers upon the play.
- 1:52:30There at that time appeared to have no chance to get through as they closed in on him, and he carried it under his own power. He's down to around the 2-yard line.
- 1:52:39And he may be held down on the turf over there, and he may be hurt. Getting up slowly. He's okay I think.
- 1:52:46And they're going to measure at the 2-yard line to see whether or not Franco has the 6th up the first down.
- 1:52:52In the meantime, goal line defense time for New Orleans.
- 1:52:56And the Saints bring on Don Coleman. They bring on Steve Bumgardner.
- 1:53:02They come out on the field with Andy Dorff, and they bring out the smaller men and go to the bigger line up defensively at the goal line.
- 1:53:11They have measured, and Pittsburgh is short of a first down, but in truth, going to be 3rd down.
- 1:53:18Pinkies to go for a first down. And a little less than 2 yards to go for a touchdown.
- 1:53:27Pittsburgh leading 21-7 with 2 minutes and 15 seconds to play in the 3rd quarter.
- 1:53:32Lynn Swan is out, and Larry Brown and John McMacon, the two tight ends are there.
- 1:53:36John Stalworth is the wide receiver. Stalworth flanks out to the near side.
- 1:53:41Stalworth out of Alabama A&M.
- 1:53:44All right, the Steelers lined up at the 2-yard line, just inside the 2.
- 1:53:50And Brad Stogg is at the Franco, and it's a slow-wow on the right side.
- 1:53:54Good top and has the first down at the 1.
- 1:53:57It's solid resistance. Ran into Jim Merlo, flipped off to the right side, and was covered as he went down at the 1-yard line.
- 1:54:04And the ball will be just inside the 1.
- 1:54:09Franco's worrying me to death, getting up slowly.
- 1:54:13Given that the old Jim Brown treatment is coming up off the ground.
- 1:54:16Well, what he's doing is having reclining conversations with the officials where to spot the ball.
- 1:54:22While he's talking, he figures he doesn't have to be on his feet, because that's taxi.
- 1:54:26He talks well in a reclining position.
- 1:54:28Less than a yard to go, first down and goal for the Steelers.
- 1:54:32Moving at the goal line to our right.
- 1:54:34And here's Franco rolling out to the left and firing into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 1:54:39And hitting Larry Brown.
- 1:54:43The same defense, first down for the middle.
- 1:54:46Just exactly the one play that you wouldn't expect to see.
- 1:54:49A roll out to Brad Stogg's opposite side.
- 1:54:53The right-hander turned and flipped the ball to Larry Brown in the far corner of the end zone, wide open for the touchdown of beauty.
- 1:55:00It was a pass good for 18 inches.
- 1:55:04That's what it was.
- 1:55:07Here is the extra point try by Roy Jarella.
- 1:55:14Half a ten. The ball is down. Jarella kicks it.
- 1:55:17It is good.
- 1:55:19Pittsburgh, 28th in the Orleans, St. Seventh.
- 1:55:23Jarella had a gathering of civilians and players around him down on Canal Street last night right outside the hotel.
- 1:55:30Just standing and talking. It was still warm. That was before the rain came.
- 1:55:34I stopped to talk to him and said, you look like you might be out here peddling roasted chestnuts or something.
- 1:55:40There was a crowd gathered around him.
- 1:55:42Very interesting atmosphere here in the Orleans where within an area of just a few blocks you can see several thousand people in all the different sizes, shapes, and all sorts of attire.
- 1:55:53And I think you'll have to admit it's a lot of people to come here.
- 1:55:57Yes indeed and Roy Jarella is very business oriented and for all you know he might have been peddling roasted chestnuts.
- 1:56:03He might have been selling somebody the land that the Marriott fans want.
- 1:56:06That drive went 67 yards in ten plays.
- 1:56:09Beautifully executed touchdown drive for the Steelers scoring on the pass to Larry Brown.
- 1:56:16And here's Jarella kicking off high and long.
- 1:56:20Five yards deep in the end zone.
- 1:56:21Bobble around by Jess Phillips and finally chased down out of bounds.
- 1:56:26They will put it in play at the 20 yard line on the automatic touchback.
- 1:56:31A minute and three seconds remaining in the third quarter in this Monday night football show at the Orleans.
- 1:56:37The Pittsburgh Steelers leading 28 to 7.
- 1:56:40Needing a victory tonight to keep pace with the Cincinnati Bengals who are in pursuit with their victory yesterday moved within a game of the Steelers.
- 1:56:47And a win tonight here in the Orleans where the things have been particularly tough on their home turf.
- 1:56:52Just to be a tremendous accomplishment coming into the home stretch of the season.
- 1:56:55Yeah, I think Brad Todd's won the quarterback job.
- 1:56:58Let's say on the basis of tonight's performance he has to have won something.
- 1:57:02Beautiful.
- 1:57:03Here they are.
- 1:57:04The pass fired to the right flat area to the 20 yard line.
- 1:57:07Alvin Maxson folds it in.
- 1:57:09He's immediately belted.
- 1:57:11Very short gainer.
- 1:57:12Jack Ham makes the stop.
- 1:57:14One yard gain on a long pass out to the right.
- 1:57:19Nice show to Orleans.
- 1:57:21Seven for 20 passing and three interceptions by the Steelers.
- 1:57:25Let's see how that matches up.
- 1:57:27Manning two for 10 and Scott five for 10.
- 1:57:31So that is seven for 20 with three interceptions.
- 1:57:35All right, Bobby Scott is the quarterback.
- 1:57:37Drops back and fires.
- 1:57:38They don't feel too high.
- 1:57:40His man up in the 40 with Joe Parker and the defensive man back there, J.P. Thomas, could not get near the football.
- 1:57:47Jack Ham dropping back was not there.
- 1:57:49It was overthrown.
- 1:57:50An incomplete pass.
- 1:57:52Going to be third down and nine yards to go with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter.
- 1:57:57And when the Steelers get the ball back, I hope Franco will continue to roll because he's going for his sixth consecutive 100 yard game.
- 1:58:04And he'll be average a little less than 100 per game from here on to have a thousand yard season.
- 1:58:1015 carries tonight for 99 yards.
- 1:58:13He'll make it.
- 1:58:14He'll make it.
- 1:58:16And Scott drops back.
- 1:58:18Scott throws complete to the 35 yard line.
- 1:58:21Paul Field at the tight end.
- 1:58:22Mike Degray forward to the 37.
- 1:58:25Paul Field, the receiver.
- 1:58:27The Steelers converge.
- 1:58:28Mike Wagner is there.
- 1:58:29Glenn Edwards is there.
- 1:58:32At the 37 yard line, the New Orleans Saints to pick up a first down.
- 1:58:35And Bobby Scott has completed his eighth pass for the Saints tonight.
- 1:58:41The Guns Downs, the end of the day quarter at Tulane Stadium.
- 1:58:44The New Orleans and North Pittsburgh 28 to 27.
- 1:58:49Well, what's the situation?
- 1:58:51The Saints now have a first down at their own 37 yard line.
- 1:58:55And so far in this ball game, Terry Bradshaw has flown for two touchdowns.
- 1:58:59He scored one himself on an 18 yard dash up the middle.
- 1:59:04So he's having a pretty big night statistically.
- 1:59:07Well, he's 6 for 15 throwing the ball, but he had a few drops.
- 1:59:11He had a few drops in the first half.
- 1:59:14So he would be up there around the 500 mark with a little better help.
- 1:59:18And we're not complaining.
- 1:59:20There we go.
- 1:59:22All right, Scott, that quarterback.
- 1:59:24Bobby Scott on the long camp.
- 1:59:26Drops back.
- 1:59:27He throws to the near side.
- 1:59:29Almost intercepted at the 44 yard line on the pass in Jennifer Paul Field.
- 1:59:34Jack Am came in front and broke it up and almost intercepted.
- 1:59:38And that is Bobby Scott's 13th pass of the night.
- 1:59:41And Gary Gerson points out that he's played very little this season.
- 1:59:46He's not performed in the last four ball games as well.
- 1:59:49And looking at the stats, he has thrown only 25 passes over the course of the season.
- 1:59:55And tonight he has flown 13 already.
- 1:59:58So he is seeing the maximum amount of work that he has experienced in a single game during the course of the season.
- 2:00:07Draw handoff, ball carried by Alvin Maxson.
- 2:00:10And Maxson is neos.
- 2:00:11Short of the line of scrimmage.
- 2:00:13So on the draw, Maxson comes forward.
- 2:00:17Does not make the line of scrimmage.
- 2:00:18He's in three for now.
- 2:00:20And Glenn Edwards puts a stopper on him.
- 2:00:22Short of the 35 by about a foot.
- 2:00:25It's going to be third down and 12.
- 2:00:27And once again, I think it's important to note that New Orleans has gone away with a razzle dazzle here in the second half thus far.
- 2:00:35They've stayed pretty much with a bread-and-butter offense.
- 2:00:38Straight throw offense.
- 2:00:39Wide step this time.
- 2:00:41And Bobby Scott will throw.
- 2:00:43Firing downfield.
- 2:00:44And it's almost interception juggles.
- 2:00:47Three, four men may have touched it.
- 2:00:49Now let me see if I got this one straight.
- 2:00:51And my recollection is right, it came off the chest of J.T. Thomas.
- 2:00:55Thomas?
- 2:00:56Thomas was there and it hit his chest and a boomerang around.
- 2:00:59And it was touched by Jack Lambert and then to that half.
- 2:01:04All three of them.
- 2:01:05And it was Thomas the Lambert to half.
- 2:01:07And none of them could hold on to it.
- 2:01:09And I tell you, Dwight, Dwight creamed a quarterback when he let that ball go.
- 2:01:13Ooh, did he cream him.
- 2:01:16Confirmation.
- 2:01:19This will carry left to right.
- 2:01:21And Tom Blanchard is the kicker.
- 2:01:24And we go deep with Edwards and Kwan.
- 2:01:26Blanchard gets it away.
- 2:01:28Low trajectory and overhand.
- 2:01:30And Edwards wants it.
- 2:01:31That is all 26.
- 2:01:32Running to the right.
- 2:01:33Kwan letting the block.
- 2:01:34Goes to the sideline.
- 2:01:35Cuts the field up at the 35.
- 2:01:36Leaps.
- 2:01:37Goes to the 40.
- 2:01:38And a 44 yard line.
- 2:01:40Felt the marker down back downfield.
- 2:01:42Then Edwards returning.
- 2:01:44The tackle made by Bob Wicks on the par side.
- 2:01:47Saw a little speed on that one too.
- 2:01:49And Kwan out in front trying to creamed somebody to get them out of the way.
- 2:01:53They look for that lane over on the sideline where they've been successful early in the evening.
- 2:01:58And now the officials are conferring.
- 2:02:00To see what sort of grief they can bring to boom.
- 2:02:05And now we're going to have a mighty consultation.
- 2:02:10It is a place called Powell flipping against the Steelers.
- 2:02:14Almanade of Gunnison.
- 2:02:18Could somebody be flipping that par downfield ahead of the play?
- 2:02:21But they weren't.
- 2:02:22Part of the Powell is an orange 43 yard line.
- 2:02:2838 yard punt.
- 2:02:30A 13 yard return.
- 2:02:32And now a 15 yard mark off from the spot of the tackle.
- 2:02:36Takes it from the 40 back to the 25.
- 2:02:38Our ball club has now been penalized a total of 80 yards on the night.
- 2:02:42Well the Steelers have been right up there.
- 2:02:45They're leading the lead.
- 2:02:46They're close to it in penalties all season.
- 2:02:48Do you suppose we have some nasty fellows on this team?
- 2:02:51No they play with pride and enthusiasm.
- 2:02:53Sure.
- 2:02:54And it's breaks down 10.
- 2:02:57At the 25.
- 2:02:59Redjaw has them lined up in the eye.
- 2:03:02Saints in a four man front with one man pulled up on the left.
- 2:03:06Very tight.
- 2:03:07And a handoff to Steve Davis on a slam through the middle.
- 2:03:09Comes to the 29 yard line.
- 2:03:11Just short of it.
- 2:03:13Alex Price on the tackle for the New Orleans Saints.
- 2:03:19And it gets the ball back to the 28 yard line.
- 2:03:24Three yard gain second down and he's up.
- 2:03:27Hey Jack are you playing back with the Steelers tonight?
- 2:03:30Absolutely.
- 2:03:31Chuck I need a ride from the stadium to the hotel and I'm not getting out of here until an hour after the game and how am I going to get a cap?
- 2:03:38I thought maybe you could help.
- 2:03:39Ah well.
- 2:03:41I could hang around a flag one for you.
- 2:03:45There's a handoff.
- 2:03:46Franco Harris nails as he approaches the 30 yard line gets short yardy.
- 2:03:50Alex Price and Billy Newsome on the tackle.
- 2:03:55You would say my second back or get me on your charter tomorrow I'd be most happy to stay over tonight to see that I can flag down transportation for you.
- 2:04:07Harris has just drawn over the 100 yard mark.
- 2:04:1016 carries 101 yards on the night.
- 2:04:14It is third down and five.
- 2:04:20Brad Shaw taking a long count.
- 2:04:22And he got the blip.
- 2:04:23Brad Shaw's back there and runs out of the ball.
- 2:04:25If he can get outside the flag is down.
- 2:04:27He doesn't make it.
- 2:04:28He is caught running to the right.
- 2:04:31And the man who caught him was Joe Pettersfield.
- 2:04:34Flag is going down.
- 2:04:36The Steelers are unhappy.
- 2:04:41And I'm telling you Mike Webster the fiery rookie from Wisconsin is having a few things to say to the official.
- 2:04:48The Steelers are upset with the rest of the number.
- 2:04:56They're getting ready to mark something off.
- 2:04:57Let's see what they're going to do.
- 2:04:59I think the Saints are going to decline.
- 2:05:01They will take the sack.
- 2:05:05And we'll go into confirmation.
- 2:05:06And here come the Saints with their triple receiver set up down field.
- 2:05:10Both Stevens, Spencer, and Panopoulos.
- 2:05:19Okay, Walden standing back at his own 10 yard line.
- 2:05:21The deep man is the little guy, Howard Stevens out of Louisville.
- 2:05:28Walden standing at his own 10, takes the stamp.
- 2:05:30And the veteran from Georgia gets it away.
- 2:05:33And Stevens measures it.
- 2:05:34He hits a ball, it's flying down field.
- 2:05:36And the Racing Everett who's going to get there made to have a field lift.
- 2:05:40And it is picked up at the 20 yard line.
- 2:05:42The Steelers have the football.
- 2:05:45The Steelers have the football at the 20 yard line.
- 2:05:48Now tell me who hit that little guy outside?
- 2:05:51Reggie Garrett, I do believe, and John McMaken recovered the fumble.
- 2:05:55Garrett hit him almost the instant the ball landed in his mitts.
- 2:05:59Oh, he gave him a whack.
- 2:06:01And Reggie is a star of the special team.
- 2:06:03No question about it.
- 2:06:05The Steelers take over at the New Orleans 20 yard line.
- 2:06:10Steve Bungard put the stop on McMaken.
- 2:06:12It didn't matter because the ball comes back.
- 2:06:14You cannot advance it.
- 2:06:15So it comes back to where he picked up possession at the 20 yard line.
- 2:06:20And what a lick.
- 2:06:21Now I think that little fellow is going to consider the fair catch in the future.
- 2:06:27Oh, wow. That was a beauty.
- 2:06:29Was that Stevens back there on that play jack?
- 2:06:31That was Stevens.
- 2:06:32He got free.
- 2:06:35And off, let's drive Franco to 15, to 10.
- 2:06:38Carries the man with him down almost to the six yard line.
- 2:06:42Derwin Moore, hanging on for dear life.
- 2:06:44And big Franco just scared him along.
- 2:06:46Let's see what he's spot the ball.
- 2:06:48He's taken in at the seven yard line, a first down for the Steelers.
- 2:06:52No gain of 13 yards on the play for Franco.
- 2:06:55His total is up to 114 on the night.
- 2:07:00The ball is at the seven yard line, the clock turning with 11.55 to go in tonight's game.
- 2:07:05And the Steelers leading 28 to 7.
- 2:07:08Lighting up in the eye for Mason with Steve Davis at the top of the eye.
- 2:07:13Inside back is Franco Harris.
- 2:07:15They shift Harris to the right, Davis to the left.
- 2:07:18Kerry Bradshaw goes back to throw.
- 2:07:20Bradshaw out into the right flat area.
- 2:07:22It's in place with the Franco, puts his head down and goes to the one yard line.
- 2:07:26Franco just drifting out of the backfield.
- 2:07:29Got a penalty marker down? We do.
- 2:07:32Now what?
- 2:07:35Tackle made by strong safety Johnny Fuller after Franco is going down to the one yard line.
- 2:07:42Calling against the Steelers.
- 2:07:46Well, down on the field you see Webster is going out of his head.
- 2:07:49Webster throws his hands up in the air.
- 2:07:52He is beside himself.
- 2:07:54He's a very religious fellow, Mike Webster.
- 2:07:56He leads the Bible faithfully, you know, for pleasure reading as well.
- 2:08:00He's just a very articulate young fellow too.
- 2:08:04Right now, however, he's mad and he would like to say some nasty things to the officials.
- 2:08:09But oh well, it hits the ball back to the 17 yard line.
- 2:08:13So it's time for Kerry Bradshaw to run up the middle for a touch time.
- 2:08:16The fellows in the Bible get that appreciating every now and then.
- 2:08:26All right, Gunstall is a loose one of the wide receivers.
- 2:08:30Harris and Davis with the running back.
- 2:08:33Ten yard mark off and the handoff.
- 2:08:36Redhead air is a fumble and New Orleans has picked up the football.
- 2:08:40Franco carrying it.
- 2:08:43On the play by Bob Pollard, Raiden Baldwin picks it up.
- 2:08:47James Savage and David Bess to football.
- 2:08:52Back out to the 27 yard line.
- 2:08:56And we're going to be back after this pause on the Steelers football.
- 2:09:02Well, we're ready for football again.
- 2:09:04James first these in at their own 27.
- 2:09:08Here's the pass.
- 2:09:10Run out of the arms.
- 2:09:14Bobby Scott had it on the nose.
- 2:09:16Last week he married into Cleveland for you, the last fight he had in the air.
- 2:09:20Tonight we have a rather chunky fellow.
- 2:09:23He's fat.
- 2:09:24He's a little fat.
- 2:09:25He's been running out of the field perceived by about three police and some other guy who would apparently be at the security force.
- 2:09:32And he took them about 60 yards, came across the near side, collapsed on the track and they proceeded to get him down
- 2:09:38and Michael his wrist behind his back and lead him out of the clouds with boys.
- 2:09:43He'll become a local legend.
- 2:09:46Bobby Scott calling the signals.
- 2:09:49Draw handoff given to the little guy.
- 2:09:51Howard Stevens is going to the left side.
- 2:09:53And now we've got a little fight coming up.
- 2:09:56Mike Webster and Paul Field.
- 2:09:59Little exchange with this because.
- 2:10:02All going to be spotted at the 32 yard line.
- 2:10:09And.
- 2:10:11That'll be third down six yards to go.
- 2:10:13Statistics.
- 2:10:15It's a little disturbing that last fumble by Frank.
- 2:10:18I was just seven for the year and six times the other team has recovered the football.
- 2:10:24Six out of seven.
- 2:10:26They're down six yards to go.
- 2:10:29Bobby Scott directs the New Orleans attack.
- 2:10:33Very sharp.
- 2:10:34Going sharply and hits his target for forty three.
- 2:10:38Joe Parker fights his way over the forty five fumbles the football.
- 2:10:41A scramble for it.
- 2:10:43He was down during the day.
- 2:10:44Cabinets of forty seven yard line.
- 2:10:50Joe Parker, the receiver, finally recovered the football.
- 2:10:53Mel Blunt.
- 2:10:55The ball after he made the tackle on Parker, the rookie from Florida.
- 2:11:00They have a completed pass to the first down in the territory.
- 2:11:03Talk about a perfect line.
- 2:11:05Parker was being rattled by a dealer defender and yet he dropped the ball and it bounced right back to him.
- 2:11:12It had to be a perfect time for him to get that ball back.
- 2:11:15He was still in a barrage.
- 2:11:18Twenty one yard advance to the football.
- 2:11:20The state of the dealers forty seven nine forty seven.
- 2:11:23The clock is turning a slot right formation to the top of the ice.
- 2:11:26Stevens with a ball.
- 2:11:27He runs and he goes to the forty yard line.
- 2:11:30Mike Wagner upended him.
- 2:11:32Joe Green covering on the plate.
- 2:11:34He advances the football about seven yards down to forty.
- 2:11:37Going to be second down and three yards to go.
- 2:11:41Stinks very definitely.
- 2:11:43Thus far in the second half have abandoned the arousal dazzle type of attack that they were attempting to execute with Archie Manning in there.
- 2:11:51They've gone to a straight more conservative offense.
- 2:11:55And here's a handoff and it's Alvin Maxson.
- 2:11:58He goes off the left side down near the thirty seven yard line.
- 2:12:01He may have a first down.
- 2:12:04Maxson takes the ball down close to a first down.
- 2:12:09Joe Green is at the bottom of the play.
- 2:12:11Steve Burnett and they'll take time to measure.
- 2:12:14Next Sunday afternoon the Houston Oilers.
- 2:12:18Will be at Three River Stadium in the earlier ball game.
- 2:12:21Pittsburgh defeated Houston thirteen to seven.
- 2:12:25And the Oilers went on to win four in a row and they were.
- 2:12:30Big shadow on this past weekend.
- 2:12:32Myron was talking about earlier about the Dallas Cowboys sending nothing.
- 2:12:37And they come in next Sunday.
- 2:12:40In an angry flame of mind.
- 2:12:41No question about it.
- 2:12:43New Orleans has missed the first down.
- 2:12:48First down still pending.
- 2:12:52And the ball is at the Pittsburgh thirty seven.
- 2:12:54A victory for the Steelers tonight with up the Pittsburgh record to eight, two and one.
- 2:13:03Scott has thrown sixteen passes completed eight for eighty three yards and one touchdown.
- 2:13:07Now a very tight formation.
- 2:13:08Two tight ends.
- 2:13:09The flanker pulled close on the right side.
- 2:13:12On third and one.
- 2:13:14And Scott gives the ball to Alvin Maxson running out to the left.
- 2:13:17Turns the corner.
- 2:13:18Whips out of bounds at the thirty four yard line.
- 2:13:25He has the first down.
- 2:13:27Get over there by Mel Blunt.
- 2:13:28The crowd is reacting with something Myron.
- 2:13:30What are they saying?
- 2:13:31Well, uh, Coen's Jack Lambert.
- 2:13:32Maxson's plowed into Glenn Edwards on the sideline.
- 2:13:35Out of bounds and knocked him flying.
- 2:13:37And Jack Splats came up alongside Maxson.
- 2:13:41And I suppose Ted Doran-Eaton, that wasn't necessary.
- 2:13:44And if you don't behave yourself, I'm going to slap you.
- 2:13:49But there was nothing really to get excited about.
- 2:13:55The group's down ten.
- 2:13:57New Orleans with the football. Eight thirty seven.
- 2:14:00Here's Bobby Scott back to throw.
- 2:14:02Scott firing down the middle.
- 2:14:03Almost intercepted.
- 2:14:04Lambert covers the play at the nineteen.
- 2:14:06The pass and ten at football field.
- 2:14:08Now we got a fly down on the play.
- 2:14:12First the foul.
- 2:14:13Pittsburgh rubbing the passer.
- 2:14:14Joe Green.
- 2:14:15No, they get right.
- 2:14:16White is upset.
- 2:14:19White is upset.
- 2:14:23We're either playing some particularly rough and strenuously.
- 2:14:27Volatile football tonight or else we're getting jobs here.
- 2:14:32One or the other, I say.
- 2:14:35Fifteen yard penalty.
- 2:14:37Fall down to the nineteen yard line.
- 2:14:39One hundred five yards total.
- 2:14:44With the score twenty eight to seven, I can take as many of these penalties as they can take.
- 2:14:49Well, I'm not going to get myself exercised over this situation.
- 2:14:53And that man is much closer to the play than I am.
- 2:14:55I'm practically in the next county.
- 2:14:56I can see the Superdome better than I can see these ball players down in this field.
- 2:15:04New Orleans ready to go.
- 2:15:05First and ten at the Pittsburgh eighteen.
- 2:15:08Scott Sakes drops back.
- 2:15:09Scott looks.
- 2:15:10He throws and it is broken up.
- 2:15:13Down at the three yard line.
- 2:15:14Glen Edwards broke up a pass and ten it for Joe Parker.
- 2:15:19Very alert defensive play and it's going to be second down for the Saints.
- 2:15:25And of all the various facilities to work out of in the nation, I happened to draw this one three times this year.
- 2:15:34And by far the best night.
- 2:15:36The other two were too hot, Marlin.
- 2:15:38Well, you're going to be in a Superdome next year, Doc.
- 2:15:42We may be back in this one before the year is over.
- 2:15:44Yep.
- 2:15:45There's a thing called the big one.
- 2:15:46The big one that could be the final tip.
- 2:15:48Here's the handoff to the little guy outside of the left.
- 2:15:50Stevens coming down over the fifteen to the ten.
- 2:15:53And they finally get about a bounce at the ten yard line.
- 2:15:56Five five one hundred sixty five pounds of dynamite.
- 2:16:01Now what have they done?
- 2:16:02Burned the flag again?
- 2:16:04Crowd is cheering.
- 2:16:08Glen Edwards and Jack Sam forced him out of bounds.
- 2:16:12The ball is marked into the ten.
- 2:16:16And it's sort of a burst down.
- 2:16:18Third down and two yards to go.
- 2:16:21And here come Lendget and John Beasley.
- 2:16:25Out comes Joe Parker and Bob Newland.
- 2:16:30In comes Rod McNeil.
- 2:16:33Out comes Howard Stevens.
- 2:16:38And they line up tight and powerful on third and two.
- 2:16:43Again for McNeil running to the left.
- 2:16:45Gets up behind the line of Jimmy's.
- 2:16:47Guides forward.
- 2:16:48And the man that came through was Andy Russell.
- 2:16:50Now Russell being jostled by one of the Saints.
- 2:16:55And the Saint in this case was up there is Emmanuel Vanders.
- 2:17:02And he's trying to agitate our stockbroker.
- 2:17:05Yes, Emmanuel goes two hundred and sixty-three pounds.
- 2:17:08And I don't know what his deep was, no pun intended.
- 2:17:11Because Andy made a great play underneath him to trip up the ball carrier.
- 2:17:16But Emmanuel reached out and took a poke at Andy.
- 2:17:20Shame on you, Emmanuel.
- 2:17:22That's all for the New Orleans Saints with the Saints at the eleven yard line.
- 2:17:26It is four down about two and a half yards to go.
- 2:17:29Saints trailing 28 to seven with seven forty-three remaining on the clock.
- 2:17:34And it's been an enjoyable night here at Tulane Stadium.
- 2:17:38Out there to give attention to the Steelers, the training corps.
- 2:17:42And Steelers football continues from New Orleans after this free timeout.
- 2:17:48Seven minutes and forty-three seconds remaining in the ball game.
- 2:17:51The Steelers leading 28 to seven.
- 2:17:54But the Saints threatening, they're just outside the Steelers ten yard line.
- 2:17:58A four-sign-and-two situation coming up.
- 2:18:02And incidentally if the Steelers do make it to the playoffs,
- 2:18:07and it looks like they very well may,
- 2:18:09they will play the wild card game for the American Conference at home in the first playoff game.
- 2:18:15Okay, let's get back to the action on the field.
- 2:18:17Zach Oka the Saints on fourth, two and a half in Steelers territory.
- 2:18:22The eleven yard line.
- 2:18:25And the quarterback stumbles, rolling right, and throws his pass, and it is incomplete.
- 2:18:30Into the arms of Howard Stevens.
- 2:18:32And he was attacked defensively by Glenn Edwards.
- 2:18:35Ball got away from him, incomplete, the Steelers will take over.
- 2:18:38Bobby Scott recovered beautifully as he tripped and stumbled rolling out of there.
- 2:18:45He is now eight for 18 for 83 yards.
- 2:18:48The one touchdown.
- 2:18:50Archie Manning went two for ten, so the Saints overall are ten for 28.
- 2:18:55And they go a total of 91 yards passing.
- 2:19:01The Steelers with a football at their own eleven.
- 2:19:04You got Lindstrom on the right.
- 2:19:06John Stalwart out to the left, the running back remains.
- 2:19:09Frank O'Harris and Steve Davis.
- 2:19:11Redjaw, but legs rolls right, they're out there waiting for him.
- 2:19:14He puts his head down and belts a couple of guys up to the 19 yard line.
- 2:19:18Redjaw, flipping on the rollout to the right side very quickly.
- 2:19:23He advances the ball from the eleven up to the twenty, where they mark it a nine-yard gain on the play.
- 2:19:30And Gary B. now has 102 yards on the night.
- 2:19:34He's going over 100 yards rushing.
- 2:19:38Here comes Rich Middleton in.
- 2:19:42He's facing Jim Merlo of the Saints.
- 2:19:46The Steelers out of the huddle, second down and one yard to go.
- 2:19:50Shifting off the eye formation.
- 2:19:54Redjaw gives it to Franco, cutting left and then heading forward.
- 2:19:58And he should have the first down near the 22 yard line.
- 2:20:02Swings to the left, heads forward, and Bob Pollard and Joe Fetterstiel bring him down.
- 2:20:06And the ball is at the 22 and the Steelers have themselves the first down.
- 2:20:108-7 in favor of Pittsburgh, 6 minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the ball game tonight at New Orleans.
- 2:20:15Next Sunday afternoon, we'll be on the edge, 12-40 from Three Rivers.
- 2:20:20Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Oilers.
- 2:20:23The return matchup between these two ball clubs.
- 2:20:26The following week, we go up Boston Way to play the New England Patriots.
- 2:20:32And then close out against Cincinnati at home.
- 2:20:35And you know, Jack, I started to say about the playoffs, the Steelers will be at home for the first one if they're in the playoffs against the Wildcars.
- 2:20:42Then if Oakland wins their game, the Steelers have to play in Oakland.
- 2:20:45But if Oakland loses, the Steelers play their second game at home.
- 2:20:49Is that clear?
- 2:20:51Not quite, right? We had to go out there last year.
- 2:20:55I thought we got both of them at home this year.
- 2:20:58Nope, not necessarily.
- 2:21:00Here's a handoff to Steve Davis.
- 2:21:01Davis breaks the tackle, going over the right side and fights his way forward to the 25-yard line.
- 2:21:08Jim Merlo on the stop and Johnny Fuller came up to help out.
- 2:21:14Looks as though they had him a little bit short that time and he broke the tackle, a shoulder tackle, and came forward for a three-yard gain, second down and seventh.
- 2:21:23Davis is 11 carries for 45 yards on the night.
- 2:21:28The Steelers have the ball at their own 25-yard line, leading 28 to 7.
- 2:21:33It's all over it. Wide left, Swan wide to the right.
- 2:21:38The high formation.
- 2:21:40And here's Bradshaw, quick flip into the right flat to Swan.
- 2:21:44He comes over the 25 and he's up to the 30.
- 2:21:47As his blocking farm is in front of him out there, Jim Clack was over to help out on the play.
- 2:21:53Gordon Gevel was over there.
- 2:21:55Jim Jackson broke through the stop and with the 31-yard line, third down and a yard to go.
- 2:22:01Bradshaw tonight, going 16 passes, completing 7, having two interceptions.
- 2:22:10Here comes Larry Brown onto the field very quickly and he becomes the second tight end.
- 2:22:18That means they've been stalling wide to the right.
- 2:22:21The tight end to the ball game and off Steve Davis finds the hole on the left side and comes up to the 35-yard line.
- 2:22:28And the tackle executed for New Orleans by Tom Myers up for the secondary.
- 2:22:34And he's got him around the ankle, holding down at the 35-yard line.
- 2:22:40Blocked journey, 4 minutes and 34 seconds.
- 2:22:44Many of the more than 70,000 people on hand have given up on the night and on the football game and decided to go home.
- 2:22:53Around the area you can see them wrapping up their blankets.
- 2:22:58It's going to be a chilly night for the Southerners.
- 2:23:00You can't blame them, they're not accustomed to this.
- 2:23:02Here's Bradshaw, rolling out to the right and he's going to be in trouble.
- 2:23:05They've got him, three of them.
- 2:23:06Man, they've got a hit on him at the 33-yard line.
- 2:23:11Jim Mello is over there, Ernie Jackson, and also coming out of a speed bump, darker.
- 2:23:20And Bradshaw got a pretty good lick that time, but he wasn't.
- 2:23:25It's back him down at 11.
- 2:23:26One-yard loss.
- 2:23:27I don't want to lose the yardage because we've got him over 100 yards on the night.
- 2:23:31In fact, the 101 now.
- 2:23:33Three minutes, 40 seconds, the clock turning.
- 2:23:38I'd like to have you listening next Sunday afternoon for the Steelers and the Oilers.
- 2:23:43You can't make it to the stadium.
- 2:23:44If you are going to the stadium, take your radio off.
- 2:23:49Back goes Bradshaw.
- 2:23:51Hiring to the near side, and Schorers reaches for it at the New Orleans 43.
- 2:23:56Cannot get the ball, covered by Vivian Lee.
- 2:24:00It's an incomplete pass.
- 2:24:04I think that your afternoon at the stadium could be enlightened by some comments from Miracle Myron.
- 2:24:12Our little guy is now considering the possibility of airing pro football and becoming Pittsburgh's answer.
- 2:24:22The New Orleans little fella.
- 2:24:25Howard Stevens, 5'5", 165, and Cote goes 5'5", 138.
- 2:24:31Now, 3rd and 11.
- 2:24:35Bradshaw shifts.
- 2:24:37Franco a few steps to the left, and the New Orleans defense shifts.
- 2:24:40And Bradshaw is back to throw there after him.
- 2:24:42He gets the pass away, and it is wide at the intended receiver, up to 45-yard line.
- 2:24:47That would be Johnny Schorers with Vivian Lee covering.
- 2:24:51Incomplete pass.
- 2:24:544 down now.
- 2:24:5511 yards to go.
- 2:24:56Walton is on to do his thing.
- 2:24:583 minutes 17 seconds remaining in the ball game.
- 2:25:03It's their 28th, New Orleans 7.
- 2:25:07Bob Wicks is back deep, different alignment here.
- 2:25:11Howard Stevens and Maury Spencer.
- 2:25:16Spencer is in the middle, Wicks is to his left.
- 2:25:20I mean, Stevens is in the middle.
- 2:25:22Wicks to his left, and Spencer to the right.
- 2:25:24Walton punches, and it's coming down for Stevens, and is down.
- 2:25:30Right around the 30-yard line, and down under that, next quickly, was Donnie Schell.
- 2:25:36Well, we have a break in the action down on the field, and we'll be right back.
- 2:25:44Jack Fleming, along with Lou Kreck here at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
- 2:25:48Myron Cope is going down to the dressing room.
- 2:25:51Rudy, it's an opportunity to say something.
- 2:25:54What were you trying to say a while ago?
- 2:25:55I asked mine if it was 30 above or 30 below.
- 2:25:59He got into a diatribe on you stealing his thunder there.
- 2:26:03Now they're shifting, putting a wing back to the left in the slot,
- 2:26:07and back nose Bobby Scott firing down field completely to the 50-yard line.
- 2:26:14Bob Newland folds it in at the 50 and goes out of balance at the 48-yard line,
- 2:26:18and they hit a big one.
- 2:26:20Mike Wagner covering over on the play.
- 2:26:24So the Saints pick up 23 yards.
- 2:26:27Ball is at Pittsburgh 47-and-a-half-yard line where they finally mark it in.
- 2:26:33The young fellow may have taken over the quarterbacking position for the Saints tonight.
- 2:26:41Charlie Davis has replaced Joe Green.
- 2:26:45So the big man from North Texas State gets a rest,
- 2:26:48and a handoff is given to Howard Stevens.
- 2:26:51Little running back, heads over to the right side, runs in the arms,
- 2:26:54Mandy Russell and Jack Hamm, and down he goes at the 45-yard line,
- 2:26:59gaining about 2-and-a-half yards.
- 2:27:04That name Bobby Scott happens to be a mystery to you.
- 2:27:07He's in his third year in the National Football League
- 2:27:09and he came out of the University of Tennessee.
- 2:27:17Larry Sippa, you may recall, quarterbacked the mainly rookie team
- 2:27:22that played us in the preseason.
- 2:27:24He's our number three quarterback.
- 2:27:25Scott's back, firing to the nearside, off the fingertips of a falling Bob Newland
- 2:27:29at Pittsburgh 28.
- 2:27:30Fentanyl markers down.
- 2:27:32Fentanyl is coming to the nearside, a 5-yard mark off in the first down.
- 2:27:36Defense gets holding.
- 2:27:38Takes it to the 40-yard line.
- 2:27:40I think that's up to about 110 yards in penalties against our side.
- 2:27:44So we've had quite an evening.
- 2:27:53Ten penalties.
- 2:27:55Throw the score, Pittsburgh 28, the officials 10, New Orleans 7.
- 2:27:59You want to keep score that way.
- 2:28:02Two minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the ballgame.
- 2:28:06This one is chalked up in the wind column.
- 2:28:08Scott fakes as he drops back.
- 2:28:10Scott fires downfield, leaping prior to the 22-yard line
- 2:28:13by Bob Newland, unsuccessful.
- 2:28:16Up the cover, Mike Wagner had a shot at it, but it was too high and too hard,
- 2:28:20and it falls incomplete.
- 2:28:22Two minutes, 18 seconds.
- 2:28:24In a cold night in New Orleans, the temperatures had to drop into the lower 40s at least,
- 2:28:28with a stiff wind blowing throughout the game.
- 2:28:34They charge the holding to Jack Lambert on that previous penalty.
- 2:28:39Scott is 9 for 2100, 7 yards in the touchdown.
- 2:28:42James is in as the fourth linebacker, replacing Steve Burnett.
- 2:28:46That's Pittsburgh 40 at a second and 10.
- 2:28:49And back goes Scott with a flag down.
- 2:28:51Scott is skipped as he gets rid of the football,
- 2:28:54incomplete on the far side intended for Joel Parker in the neighborhood of the Pittsburgh 20
- 2:28:58with Jim Allen covering.
- 2:29:00Allen playing the right corner now and plays for Mel Blunt,
- 2:29:02who's a rookie from UCLA, 6'2", 194 pounds.
- 2:29:07Now the consultation out at the 40-yard line.
- 2:29:13Pittsburgh is getting the option.
- 2:29:17They're calling an illegal motion penalty against the Saints defined by Pittsburgh.
- 2:29:22Andy Russell says we don't want it.
- 2:29:24It's cleared down and 10.
- 2:29:27The Saints have been hit with only one 10-yard penalty for holding.
- 2:29:33The crowd has diminished considerably.
- 2:29:41All right, here's Bobby Scott calling the signals for the New Orleans Saints,
- 2:29:46the senior 40-yard line.
- 2:29:49Scott Jakes, Jakes, back and looking, throwing,
- 2:29:52narrowing, completed the 30 in and out of the arms of Paul Field,
- 2:29:56the big rookie from Michigan.
- 2:29:58Jack Lambert in hand covering did not figure on that one.
- 2:30:01Field just simply could not hold the football.
- 2:30:03He dropped it.
- 2:30:06Big 6'4", 222 pound rookie from Michigan and that pass was right on the nose.
- 2:30:12Field dropped it, got it, 9'4", 22, 107 yards on one touchdown.
- 2:30:192-0-8 to play in the ball game.
- 2:30:24On a Monday night in New Orleans.
- 2:30:30They break down to the huddle, Bob Newell into the right,
- 2:30:32Joe Parker wide to the left.
- 2:30:34Tight end is Paul Field.
- 2:30:36Quarterback is Bobby Scott.
- 2:30:38He's back to throw and after him and getting in his Dwight White.
- 2:30:42Mad Dog in for two, gets the tack and the Steelers continue to add to their tremendous number of sacks for the season,
- 2:30:51all the way back to the New Orleans 49-yard line.
- 2:30:54And that was a 4th down play so the Steelers will take over at that point,
- 2:30:582-0-4 remaining in the ball game.
- 2:31:03Paul is at the New Orleans 49-and-a-half yard line.
- 2:31:14Let's see what we have now.
- 2:31:15Lynn Swan is out and Reggie Garrett is in.
- 2:31:18John Stalworth remains in.
- 2:31:20Garrett and Stalworth are the wide receivers.
- 2:31:23Running back, roll steady because they're going to rest Rocky Blyer apparently and not use him.
- 2:31:28And Brad Shaw gives it to Steve Davis.
- 2:31:31He drives the right side, swinging outside of the right, goes down to the 48-yard line.
- 2:31:36Comes with a two-minute warning period in the ball game.
- 2:31:38There's a timeout on the field and with a break in the action we'll be right back.
- 2:31:42He's in the both clubs.
- 2:31:44Here's a handoff to Steve Davis running to the left and he works his way down to the 45-yard line.
- 2:31:51A tackle made by Bob Pollard.
- 2:31:55The first Steelers leading 28-7 are playing out the clock.
- 2:31:59No scoring here in the fourth quarter.
- 2:32:03Banks came at them game-wise and they changed their game plan considerably with Bobby Scott coming in as quarterback.
- 2:32:08Brad Shaw's back.
- 2:32:09He's not going to throw, he's going to run.
- 2:32:11Now he's throwing back the opposite direction, the left, and completes the pass to the tight end, Randy Grossman.
- 2:32:16At the 35-yard line, Grossman is pulled down by Wayne Coleman and Vivian Lee.
- 2:32:21Brad Shaw that time went back as though to pass, ran as though to run.
- 2:32:25The ball was in trouble.
- 2:32:26He went back in the opposite direction and there was Randy Grossman, his first reception tonight.
- 2:32:31And they have a first down at the Saints 35-yard line.
- 2:32:35Clock turning with 51 seconds.
- 2:32:37So Brad Shaw has completed the pass.
- 2:32:43And it's first and tenth.
- 2:32:48Brad Shaw is eighth for 19 now.
- 2:32:53Dave Revis is in the ball game in the offensive line.
- 2:32:56Rick Russo is playing in that offensive line.
- 2:32:59And the handoff is carried straight ahead by Franco Harris.
- 2:33:04Woo!
- 2:33:11Randy Harrison, new running back, gets into the ball game.
- 2:33:18And that's the first substitution without a running back tonight.
- 2:33:21Bob Pollard and Jim Merlo on the stop, the ball just inside the Saints 30.
- 2:33:29And they run out the clock.
- 2:33:32So we come down to the end of the ball game with the final score, 6-3, 28, drawing seven.
- 2:33:38We'll be right back.
