- 0:00SPEAKER_00: so let's start the day out with asking
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: a question what trophies are we chasing you know in the marketplace trophies come
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: in many forms sales awards promotion titles and plaques on the wall and
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: then there's followers online and occasionally the quiet applause
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: of being noticed now none of those things are wrong
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: but proverbs 10 forces us to ask a deeper question what happens when
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: the trophies we chase become the things that define us today we'll explore
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: the difference between temporary recognition and lasting significance
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: welcome to marketplace proverbs and coffee with ernie where a proverb
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: a day keeps stinking thinking at bay i'm ernie lansford after more than 60 years
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: in sales and leadership i've learned that biblical wisdom is
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: the most valuable asset we can carry into
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: the marketplace each time i read proverbs scripture
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: reveals practical insight for leadership service and building relationships
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: that far outlast the last transaction so pour yourself a cup of your favorite brew
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: and let's explore today's proverb together today we are in proverbs 10 verses 4
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: through 5 quote a lazy person will end up poor but a hard worker will become rich
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: those who gather crops on time are wise but those who sleep through the harvest are
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: a disgrace that's proverbs 10 verses 4 through 5 there was a time in my life
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: when i grappled with what zig zig zig referred to as stinking thinking
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: about money i didn't see money as a useful tool but rather as a scoreboard
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Now to me,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: money represented a way to accumulate what I'd call trophies,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: tangible signs that I wasn't lazy, that I was succeeding, and that I mattered.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: However, those trophies came at a cost.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Back in the 70s and 80s,
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I traveled across three states as a territory sales representative for St.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Louis Music.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: the home of alvarez guitars and ampeg amps back in those days you know
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: and i started out driving
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: a really nice pontiac bonneville now pontiac is no longer made but this was
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: a nice four-door sedan and it was the bonneville model i think it was the top of
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: the line of the of the sedan series and but that wasn't good enough then i went for
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: a shiny cadillac
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: and then i traded the cadillac for a turbocharged volvo 760 and eventually i owned
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: the stylish mercedes-benz 450 sl coupe now on
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: the surface it seemed like success was mine
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: but beneath it all i was stretched i became an enslaved borrower to the lenders
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: one memory really stays with me is i was visiting my parents while traveling
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: through my territory they lived in my territory and i love them very much but i got
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: to be transparent with you i didn't stay overnight just to be with them i stayed
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: because i just made a car payment and a hotel wasn't in my budget
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: and frankly i had just enough gas
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: to complete my rounds and then get back home to Pensacola, Florida.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: You know, there wasn't even enough money to invite a customer out for coffee or lunch.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I wanted respect for my ego, but my bank account was the reality check.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I was caught up in what I now call the J-O-B mindset, you know, job.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: It's an acronym for just over broke.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: and in a culture that often values appearance more
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: than substance i gotta tell you that's an easy trap to fall into and
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: in today's marketplace it's common to see people confuse working hard with hustling
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: and often hustle is driven more by desire to look successful than
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: by actually being successful remember we don't just want to succeed
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: we also want to feel good about what we've achieved and Jesus teaches us clearly
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: that we can't serve two masters we'll either use money to serve us
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: or let it control us or stay true to our values amid shifting cultural currents
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: and it's really important to see the opposite of allowing money to use us
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: and control us it's important that we see money as a helpful tool
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: not a symbol of status money does provide us options you know
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: if i have ten dollars my choices are limited but if i have 25 my options grow but
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: the real question isn't what money can do for us it's what it allows us to do
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: for others and for good causes
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: you know as a gospel-centric customer success master
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: I've come to see that working and serving are about earning to live and give rather
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: than living just to make money that little change has made a world of difference
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: when I let go of chasing after comfort I started focusing
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: on building meaningful relationships when I aimed to add significance
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: to others instead of trying to impress them everything shifted the stress eased up
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: the worry lessened
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: i began to truly understand what the apostle paul was saying
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: in philippians 4 12 content whether in plenty or in want contentment isn't
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: about complacency it's about clarity and with clarity comes
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: as my guide i can better navigate life's cultural shifts think on
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: that today's customer success code
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: true wealth is found in the stewardship of our relationship not the status
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: of our possessions today's action points action point number one is let's do
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: a trophy audit look at your recent big purchase was it made to serve a purpose or
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: to feed your ego action point number two is serving
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: the right master this week right now today identify one area
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: where you've been living to work rather than working to live how can you pivot that
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: to the working to live and serve mindset and
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: then action point number three is let's expand our options financial discipline
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: isn't about being stingy it's about creating expanded options to bless our family
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: and community
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: lord thank you for convicting me of my former worship of money please forgive me
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: for chasing trophies instead of your truth thank you for being my provider and for
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: the grace to steward the resources you put in my hands help me to use my work
