- 0:09Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars Bizarre and Lazar O everybody nailed
- 0:17Speaker 1: it joined us always by our Here is Evan Lazar
- 0:24Speaker 1: and Alex Bars.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'm not in like any sort of panic about the
- 0:28Speaker 2: run defense is because Tonga and Milton Williams are supposed
- 0:31Speaker 2: to be coming back, right, So a big part of
- 0:33Speaker 2: this is that you're missing your three hundred and thirty
- 0:35Speaker 2: five pounds nose tackle and you're missing your best defensive linemen.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So if you get those two guys back, then in theory,
- 0:42Speaker 2: your run defense should come back around. But after really
- 0:45Speaker 2: having an excellent first nine weeks of the season, the
- 0:49Speaker 2: Patriots run defense in the last four games of the
- 0:51Speaker 2: season are allowing a fifty five point one percent success
- 0:56Speaker 2: rate that is dead last in the NFL. They're the
- 0:58Speaker 2: worst run defense in football the last month of the season.
- 1:03Speaker 3: You can need that run defense to pick it back up?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Can I need that run defense On Sunday against the
- 1:08Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills and James Cook And one of the more
- 1:12Speaker 2: underrated parts of this Bills team is their run game.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, Allan gets a lot of
- 1:17Speaker 2: the tension obviously, but their their run game really over
- 1:21Speaker 2: the last couple of years has been a huge part
- 1:25Speaker 2: of their offense and a huge part of their consistency of.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Their past game for the last I mean going back
- 1:30Speaker 3: to last year.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Maybe well, I mean want MVP of the league last year.
- 1:33Speaker 3: So a lot of that was because it was rushing numbers.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Oh well him individually, sure, I meant more of their
- 1:39Speaker 2: traditional runs. Yeah, no, they good run game. Anyways, we're
- 1:43Speaker 2: gonna talk bills. We have a little bye week exercise
- 1:46Speaker 2: that we want to get to as well here today,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and we'll also try to open it up a little
- 1:52Speaker 2: bit more here today because we don't have a game
- 1:55Speaker 2: to break down, Alex, we don't have a good bad
- 1:57Speaker 2: and stuff that gets you beat because the Patriots did
- 1:59Speaker 2: not play last week on Sunday, I do also want
- 2:02Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about the week that was
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the NFL and take this opportunity to talk about
- 2:07Speaker 2: some of these other teams, hopefully not get myself into
- 2:09Speaker 2: any trouble this time around with the fan bases of
- 2:13Speaker 2: these other teams. And you know, it's so sensitive out
- 2:16Speaker 2: there these days, Alex, like all these people are so
- 2:18Speaker 2: sensitive and it's not just.
- 2:20Speaker 3: How dare people like their football teams?
- 2:22Speaker 2: No, but it's got the whining on social media every
- 2:28Speaker 2: single time somebody says something mean about your favorite team
- 2:32Speaker 2: has gotten excessive, like last night across sports for a second.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Last night, I.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Tweeted about Jason Tatum's workout videos, which was great to see,
- 2:41Speaker 2: by the way, But I tweet that and I think
- 2:44Speaker 2: I said, you know, the Celtics would be favorites in
- 2:47Speaker 2: the East if Tatum comes back and is healthy, which
- 2:50Speaker 2: I did not think was all that controversial seeing that
- 2:52Speaker 2: they are currently playing pretty well without them.
- 2:55Speaker 3: This is not a Celtics show.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I'm just let me.
- 2:59Speaker 3: You want to take your relap on the Celtics, okay.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And the response that I have gotten from that tweet
- 3:06Speaker 2: is a bunch of Knicks fans in my company.
- 3:10Speaker 3: They lost to the Celtics. You know, the Celtics lost
- 3:12Speaker 3: to the Knicks. Wit tatums. Okay, I get it, I
- 3:15Speaker 3: get it.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Broncos fans, Bill's fans, Knicks fans, calm down, just stay
- 3:21Speaker 2: out of it, stay out of my mention. Stop searching
- 3:23Speaker 2: your team's names on Twitter and then complaining and whining.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It's gotten excessive. It's not fun. I don't like it.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Please stop, just please stop.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'll be I'll try to be less loud about things,
- 3:35Speaker 2: but you guys gotta start, you know, having a little
- 3:38Speaker 2: bit of a backbone, like please seriously.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Meanwhile, I had a wonderful time getting along with both
- 3:43Speaker 3: Colts and Chargers fans. Yeah, that's because you've been gassing
- 3:47Speaker 3: up this stupid story. All right, Can I can I.
- 3:51Speaker 2: A start here? It's it's Evan, It's Alex Stocks behind
- 3:53Speaker 2: the glass. By the way, it's Catch twenty two. Hello Evan,
- 3:57Speaker 2: it may right into it.
- 3:58Speaker 3: It maybe the moment was we get to do this
- 4:01Speaker 3: and maybe the most predictable outcome of all time. Yes,
- 4:03Speaker 3: Evan has zero interest in the Philip Rivers story. None way,
- 4:07Speaker 3: he does zero. He's not amused. He doesn't think it's fun.
- 4:10Speaker 3: He doesn't think it's funny, none of it. He has.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It peaks his intra zero that a forty four year
- 4:15Speaker 3: old grandfather five years out of retirement is getting signed
- 4:19Speaker 3: by a playoff contender to play quarterback with four weeks
- 4:22Speaker 3: left in the season, and oh, by the way, might
- 4:24Speaker 3: play on less than a week's notice. This moves the
- 4:27Speaker 3: needle for you. Zero. Okay, So it's just wacky. First
- 4:30Speaker 3: of all, First of all, the fact that he's a
- 4:32Speaker 3: grandfather says more about Philip Rivers than it does his age.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Not the first NFL grandfather, not Aaron Rodgers, Brett fav
- 4:39Speaker 3: was at the end of his career.
- 4:40Speaker 2: So like, he's a forty four year old grandfather. Yeah,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I think like verin very more about Philip Rivers than
- 4:46Speaker 2: it does. That doesn't tell me he's old, Like you're
- 4:49Speaker 2: in forty four year old. There's not a whole lot
- 4:51Speaker 2: of forty four year old grandfi.
- 4:53Speaker 3: It's not like a ten year old grandkid. It's very recent.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I pretty sure last year. Okay, all right, keep going.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Okay, it like they're I don't mean to out them
- 5:01Speaker 2: or anything, but like Paul, Fred and Deuce I think
- 5:04Speaker 2: are all over the age of forty four. None of
- 5:06Speaker 2: them are grandfathers yet. So the fact that he's a
- 5:09Speaker 2: grandfather tells me that more about him the party. Okay,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but that that's part number one.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Part number two is like like we're like why
- 5:19Speaker 3: do why is everything a meme? Like why Like this
- 5:21Speaker 3: goes back to what I was just saying, why does everything.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Have to be it's or we're meming or Oh my god,
- 5:26Speaker 2: how funny, Like it's not funny? Does is he gonna
- 5:29Speaker 2: play well? Or is he not gonna play well? Where's
- 5:31Speaker 2: the humor in this?
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's not just humor. It's an intriguing storyline. The guys. This,
- 5:37Speaker 3: here's the thing. If they were a two win team,
- 5:40Speaker 3: I think people would be looking at it as more
- 5:41Speaker 3: of a joke, making it more of a meme. They're
- 5:43Speaker 3: right there in the mix, like they couldn't make the playoffs,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and if they make the playoffs, by the way, he
- 5:48Speaker 3: might be the guy.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And the NFL is a totally different conversation. The NFL
- 5:52Speaker 2: is it's a totally different conversation. No, No, I have
- 5:55Speaker 2: no problem with talking about it in terms of what
- 5:57Speaker 2: it means for the Colts and if he's relevant and
- 6:00Speaker 2: if they're relevant now with him as quarterback. What I
- 6:02Speaker 2: have a problem is is that it's like you guys
- 6:05Speaker 2: that make it like this, like, oh, it's so funny,
- 6:07Speaker 2: Like what's funny?
- 6:08Speaker 3: It's a little goofy that you here's funny about it?
- 6:12Speaker 3: There's nothing there is there is when it comes to
- 6:14Speaker 3: the state of the NFL, how many quarterbacks under the
- 6:17Speaker 3: age of thirty are there on practice? Squads or free
- 6:21Speaker 3: agents or whatever. And the cult are saying, no, this
- 6:23Speaker 3: guy that hasn't put on a helmet in five years,
- 6:26Speaker 3: who's closer to AARP?
- 6:29Speaker 2: They are like, it's not seventy.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's the NFL, it's the NFL. In the NFL is anomal.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We're starting to get up there in age. If forty
- 6:39Speaker 2: four is.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Close to AARP, is there fifty five? Then we're ten
- 6:43Speaker 3: years away from that. I didn't finish the thoughts. Is
- 6:46Speaker 3: a close to ARP than the draft?
- 6:47Speaker 2: But you've been thinking about that?
- 6:50Speaker 3: There's no I actually just came up with that. No,
- 6:52Speaker 3: there's one. Why is Philip Rivers a better option than
- 6:58Speaker 3: guys who are actively in the league? But this, and
- 7:00Speaker 3: I'm sure they'll be asked to take but this is
- 7:02Speaker 3: what makes it fascinating. And two, the NFL is a
- 7:05Speaker 3: copycat league. If this works, oh my god, Like, what
- 7:09Speaker 3: does it say about the current state of quarterbacks in
- 7:12Speaker 3: the league? And next time this happened way too much,
- 7:15Speaker 3: Our team's gonna call Derek Carr. Our team's gonna call
- 7:19Speaker 3: called Derek Ryan Tannell. I think Carr's shoulders shot. Isn't
- 7:23Speaker 3: that part of the Remember that with the Saints like
- 7:26Speaker 3: he was gonna have to have shoulder surgery and he
- 7:28Speaker 3: wasn't in a place here anyway, and blah blah blah.
- 7:29Speaker 2: But like you know it, we become Celtics catch twenty
- 7:32Speaker 2: two and Colts catch twenty two in the first seven.
- 7:35Speaker 3: It's you can't deny it's a major NFL story.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Major as a stretch, it's a story.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I mean, it's all Schefter was tweeting about yesterday.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Because he's because like what he and all of the
- 7:47Speaker 2: insider game has become is also just something that is annoying.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I just I don't know how you can't find it
- 7:53Speaker 3: fascinating like I.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Find it interesting. Is it important or interesting?
- 7:59Speaker 3: Well, I think it's interesting now it is the chance
- 8:01Speaker 3: to become important. Find out the way.
- 8:02Speaker 2: If it comes important, I'll be interested.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But the fact that it has the chance to become
- 8:07Speaker 3: important to the Patriots, by the way, because the Coults
- 8:10Speaker 3: get in the probably the seventh.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Seed, right, and that prichalleging that I that it's happening,
- 8:15Speaker 2: I just I just I'm sorry. I just you know,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't have time for the nonsense.
- 8:20Speaker 3: The fact that doesn't move the needle for you blows
- 8:22Speaker 3: like everybody else, I don't know what that means. You
- 8:25Speaker 3: don't want to talk about it, not in the context,
- 8:29Speaker 3: not in the.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Context in the way that you all want to talk
- 8:31Speaker 2: about it.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Now, do you think it's gonna work? God, it's so
- 8:34Speaker 3: funny that he's forty four and well, there's some good
- 8:36Speaker 3: shows that come out of it. There are I'm not
- 8:39Speaker 3: there for that. Do you think it's gonna work? Why
- 8:41Speaker 3: do you think the Colts view is a better option?
- 8:43Speaker 3: And I know he knows the playbook, but.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Like, I don't know. I couldn't tell you.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I didn't cover the I find those elements of it
- 8:49Speaker 3: interesting as somebody who covers the league and is interested
- 8:52Speaker 3: in in in league dynamics and things like that, I
- 8:55Speaker 3: find it interesting.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Can we move on now?
- 8:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 8:57Speaker 2: All right, So I want to I've been back in it.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Do we open bye week? Do we open bills? I
- 9:02Speaker 2: do want to open with the bills because I was
- 9:06Speaker 2: thinking about this. I'll you know, the last couple of days.
- 9:09Speaker 2: This is probably the biggest game the Patriots have played
- 9:13Speaker 2: in four years. It's definitely the biggest game at Gillette
- 9:16Speaker 2: Stadium since twenty twenty one, since Mac Jones' rookie year.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I would say the week sixteen game against Buffalo where
- 9:23Speaker 2: they came here, not exactly the same situation because the
- 9:26Speaker 2: Patriots have a little bit more margin for error this
- 9:29Speaker 2: time around, and they did that time that time. They
- 9:32Speaker 2: were a game up on the Bills with the game
- 9:34Speaker 2: in hand, but Buffalo curb stopped them, to be honest,
- 9:37Speaker 2: in like sixteen twenty twenty one, and then the Bills
- 9:40Speaker 2: controlled their own destiny and won the division from there.
- 9:43Speaker 2: So a little bit more margin for this time around
- 9:46Speaker 2: for this Patriots team. But it's definitely the biggest game
- 9:49Speaker 2: at Gialette Stadium since twenty twenty one, probably the biggest
- 9:52Speaker 2: game for the Patriots since the Bill's playoff game in
- 9:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty two or twenty one season. So whatever way
- 9:59Speaker 2: you selec I said, Alex, this is the biggest Patriots
- 10:02Speaker 2: game that they've had that we've covered in four years,
- 10:05Speaker 2: which I don't think is in the NFL. That is
- 10:07Speaker 2: a lot of time like that is a long time
- 10:11Speaker 2: to go between really relevant, high stakes end of season
- 10:16Speaker 2: games like this, especially at home for the Patriots. So
- 10:21Speaker 2: you know, I think that this is probably you can't
- 10:25Speaker 2: really build this game, you know, take this game any
- 10:29Speaker 2: differently of billing it as one of the biggest games
- 10:31Speaker 2: that they've played in the last half decade, really since
- 10:34Speaker 2: Tom Brady.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Left, I think it's the biggest game I even if
- 10:37Speaker 3: I know they played a playoff game since then, but
- 10:39Speaker 3: they were the seven seed. They kind of backed in.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Remember how many guys they were missing in that game
- 10:43Speaker 3: due to COVID. I think a lot of people forget
- 10:45Speaker 3: that they had no chance that night. Right, kind of
- 10:48Speaker 3: knew what that was. The Brady game, I know was
- 10:52Speaker 3: a big game to a lot of people. It was
- 10:54Speaker 3: an emotional game, right, it was also a week four
- 10:56Speaker 3: non conference game, Like ultimately the stakes were not there, Right,
- 11:00Speaker 3: this is the biggest game that they've played since Brady left. Yeah,
- 11:04Speaker 3: I would agree, and hopefully by the way gets topped
- 11:06Speaker 3: in a couple of weeks that that should be the goal.
- 11:09Speaker 3: But at least for the time being, this is going
- 11:11Speaker 3: to be the biggest game they've played. Remember when we
- 11:14Speaker 3: were doing our old show and it was it was
- 11:16Speaker 3: the twenty one season, and I had this thought the
- 11:19Speaker 3: other day. They kept playing all these teams that were
- 11:21Speaker 3: like not good but playing well. Right before they played
- 11:24Speaker 3: the Patriots and we opened that show like seven or
- 11:27Speaker 3: eight weeks a row with me saying this is the
- 11:29Speaker 3: biggest game for the Patriots in two years. Yeah, I'm
- 11:32Speaker 3: glad we haven't kind of done that charade this year.
- 11:34Speaker 3: But this one, this one.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Is biggest game of Patriots have played at Gellette Stadium
- 11:38Speaker 2: in four years. I think is the way I would
- 11:40Speaker 2: bill it.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Ay at Gillette, Well, five years, four, I did the
- 11:44Speaker 3: twenty twenty one, two, twenty three, twenty four, six years,
- 11:48Speaker 3: it's four years. There was a bigger game in twenty one.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Oh, you're saying it since Brady left. Yeah, I think
- 11:54Speaker 2: it's the biggest game since Week sixteen, twenty twenty one.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Which one was that the time that bills Oh, okay
- 12:01Speaker 2: in twenty twenty one?
- 12:02Speaker 3: I think the same.
- 12:03Speaker 2: It's the same situation.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think this is a little bigger than
- 12:06Speaker 3: that because of what dream meant is you're saying since
- 12:09Speaker 3: that game?
- 12:10Speaker 2: All right, fair enough, Yeah, anyways, we are getting into
- 12:13Speaker 2: some semantics already at the top.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I like that, and the YouTube Chap thinks I'm panicking
- 12:17Speaker 3: about Philip Rivers.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Good, yeah, you're yeah, you're you're worried that forty four
- 12:21Speaker 2: year old grandpa is going to come in.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Here and be the grandpa. Thing didn't match, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I did that on purpose.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Anyways, So huge game on Sunday for the Patriots hat
- 12:32Speaker 2: and T shirt game. I understand, And we were talking
- 12:36Speaker 2: a little bit about this on Unfiltered and then I
- 12:38Speaker 2: want to get into like the what we normally do,
- 12:40Speaker 2: which is the x's and o's of this matchup. I
- 12:43Speaker 2: understand that the Patriots have some margin ferrer here. They
- 12:46Speaker 2: could lose this game to Buffalo, and conceivably they could
- 12:49Speaker 2: probably lose the game to Baltimore too and still win
- 12:51Speaker 2: the division.
- 12:53Speaker 3: But there's just certain way they can clinch the division
- 12:55Speaker 3: this week even if they lose. No, there isn't no
- 12:58Speaker 3: there there is another there's some weird tiebreaker.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Things, and they can clinch it. They can clinch a
- 13:03Speaker 2: playoff berth, they cannot. They can only clinch the division
- 13:06Speaker 2: if they win.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Maybe that's what it was.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you can still win the division if you lose.
- 13:13Speaker 2: You can probably, like I said, still win the division
- 13:15Speaker 2: if you lose next week in Baltimore just by beating
- 13:18Speaker 2: the Jets and the Dolphins. But there's something There's two things.
- 13:22Speaker 2: One that there's something different about doing it on your
- 13:25Speaker 2: own terms and not.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Like you don't want to be the team that backs it.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're not backing into it by beating a
- 13:30Speaker 2: bad Jets team and like a mediocre Dolphins team. You
- 13:34Speaker 2: don't want to do that. The other thing that I
- 13:35Speaker 2: think is it needs to be said about this element
- 13:39Speaker 2: of it. Besides playing the Eagles in Week seventeen, the
- 13:43Speaker 2: Bills have the Patriots, the Browns, the Eagles, and the
- 13:46Speaker 2: Jets to wrap up this season. The Eagles are in
- 13:48Speaker 2: a free fall and I think the Eagles. My point
- 13:52Speaker 2: is is that I think the Bills are going to
- 13:53Speaker 2: run the table outside of this game on Sunday, which
- 13:56Speaker 2: is a coin flip, right, So they're going to probably
- 13:58Speaker 2: go three to zero to the season, which doesn't mean
- 14:02Speaker 2: that they could pass the Patriots if the Patriots take
- 14:04Speaker 2: care of their own business. But it just puts a
- 14:07Speaker 2: lot of pressure as these games get later and later
- 14:11Speaker 2: in the season, where you're probably gonna the Patriots are
- 14:15Speaker 2: going to be the Jets in the Medallands. Like I'm
- 14:17Speaker 2: that certainly hope that I'm not worried about. But a
- 14:20Speaker 2: Week eighteen game against Miami here where you have to
- 14:23Speaker 2: win it to win the.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Division, and by the way, Miami might need that game
- 14:26Speaker 3: to get in the playoffs.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It's just not a spot you want to put yourself in.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's a spot it's a spot that
- 14:31Speaker 2: they couldn't get out of or couldn't win. It's just
- 14:34Speaker 2: not a spot that you want to put yourself in.
- 14:36Speaker 2: So this game, from that angle, you just want to
- 14:40Speaker 2: be able to say that you did it. You took
- 14:42Speaker 2: care of your own business, you did it yourself. You
- 14:45Speaker 2: didn't need tie breakers to win the division over Buffalo,
- 14:49Speaker 2: you knocked out the champs. Like that's what you want
- 14:51Speaker 2: to say. You want to be able to say that
- 14:53Speaker 2: as a football team. The other angle to all of this,
- 14:57Speaker 2: with the Bills in particular, is just I think that
- 15:02Speaker 2: there's a lot to be said for the fact that
- 15:04Speaker 2: the Bills right now have won five straight division titles.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Josh Allen's the reigning MVP of the league. There's just
- 15:12Speaker 2: a lot of statements that can come from the Patriots
- 15:14Speaker 2: winning this game. Not to mention not that I think
- 15:17Speaker 2: that they really care about this too much, but just
- 15:19Speaker 2: as a fan and from the outside looking in the
- 15:22Speaker 2: fact that a lot of people are still doing the
- 15:24Speaker 2: schedule thing like if you beat Buffalo here on Sunday
- 15:27Speaker 2: to win the division, it does quiet some of the
- 15:30Speaker 2: all all you've played is tomato can narrative and all
- 15:33Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. So there's a lot of things
- 15:36Speaker 2: that are acquire is it a lot? In my opinion,
- 15:40Speaker 2: all these things go into it. All of this thing
- 15:42Speaker 2: is all these things are important. I think about this
- 15:45Speaker 2: game and then I want to get into the specific
- 15:47Speaker 2: x's and no's, but just how the stakes of the
- 15:51Speaker 2: game in terms of if they lose this game. Now
- 15:54Speaker 2: at least it becomes interesting when it comes to the division,
- 15:57Speaker 2: Like where's your your meter with that?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think it's a you hit on
- 16:05Speaker 3: a lot of it. Like it's a true whether it's
- 16:06Speaker 3: it's the division. I know this isn't flex, but this is,
- 16:09Speaker 3: for all intents and purposes, a national game. This is
- 16:11Speaker 3: the one o'clock game. The country's going to see the
- 16:15Speaker 3: MVP element of it like this, this is make the
- 16:17Speaker 3: statement this and then the Ravens next week in prime
- 16:20Speaker 3: time for the MVP. Obviously you're not appealing to a committee.
- 16:24Speaker 3: You won't go down that whole road. It's solid standings,
- 16:26Speaker 3: but like there is something to be said for being
- 16:29Speaker 3: back on the national stage and you want to make
- 16:32Speaker 3: your case going into the playoffs, you're the team to
- 16:34Speaker 3: beat in AFC. This is the way to do it.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And then there's that one seed thing that's looming and
- 16:37Speaker 3: they obviously can't lock that up this week, but the
- 16:41Speaker 3: the the Broncos have a tough game and you got
- 16:44Speaker 3: to get a game ahead of them. Now they have
- 16:45Speaker 3: the tie breaker no matter what. So I just think, yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 3: there's a lot the narrative stuff doesn't ultimately doesn't determine things.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I mean, I guess a little bit for the MVP,
- 16:55Speaker 3: it does, but the MVP doesn't mean anything like ultimately,
- 16:58Speaker 3: you know, we're not throwing a parade down Boylston for
- 17:00Speaker 3: Drake May winning the MVP. Sorry Drake, but it's just
- 17:02Speaker 3: not you know how it goes. This is it's just
- 17:06Speaker 3: a really good chance to showbody like this thing is real.
- 17:09Speaker 3: And there's also the side of it of and I
- 17:11Speaker 3: know people don't want to think about this, but we've
- 17:12Speaker 3: gotten this question on this show. What makes this team
- 17:16Speaker 3: different than twenty one and twenty one they went into
- 17:18Speaker 3: the bye week, and the bye week was a few
- 17:19Speaker 3: weeks earlier, but they went into the bye week, the
- 17:21Speaker 3: number one seed, seemingly rolling. They'd won like, what was it,
- 17:24Speaker 3: six of eight, seven of eight, something like that. They
- 17:26Speaker 3: won seven in a row, seven in a row going
- 17:28Speaker 3: to the bye, and they came out of the by
- 17:29Speaker 3: against a tougher portion in their schedule, which is what
- 17:31Speaker 3: the Patriots will do here with the Bills and Ravens,
- 17:34Speaker 3: and they fell off. They completely fell off, and like instantly,
- 17:38Speaker 3: like from the start of that Colts game. And you
- 17:40Speaker 3: know what makes this team different than that one? Will
- 17:42Speaker 3: hear you go, you're in the same spot, right, And
- 17:44Speaker 3: I do think this team is different. Drake May makes
- 17:46Speaker 3: it Drake May makes it different. I think there were
- 17:50Speaker 3: also just some players on that team that were probably
- 17:52Speaker 3: playing above the level that they realistically can play at.
- 17:55Speaker 3: And there's some guys playing some great football here too,
- 17:56Speaker 3: But I think it's more sustainable. This is a really
- 18:00Speaker 3: good chance to show like, hey, this is different. You know,
- 18:02Speaker 3: you come out in the same situation and you handle
- 18:04Speaker 3: it differently. This is different. Yeah, So let's talk about
- 18:07Speaker 3: the matchups here.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I want to revisit the Week five game because although
- 18:11Speaker 2: there's different personnel because of injuries and things like that,
- 18:14Speaker 2: I think the way the game unfolded and the game
- 18:18Speaker 2: plans on both sides is still really really relevant to
- 18:21Speaker 2: how this game is.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Going to go on Sunday.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So the biggest thing I think from that game that
- 18:27Speaker 2: you have to remember, and I'm not saying this to
- 18:30Speaker 2: say that the Patriots win was any less impressive. I'm
- 18:33Speaker 2: just saying it that I don't think that this is
- 18:35Speaker 2: going to replicate itself this time around. Buffalo turned the
- 18:39Speaker 2: ball over three times in that game. We were called
- 18:40Speaker 2: for eleven penalties, right, they had sort of especially in
- 18:44Speaker 2: the first half where they turned it over twice really
- 18:47Speaker 2: on their own accord.
- 18:48Speaker 3: One was a you know, a.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Botched exchange jets we panned off type thing that I
- 18:54Speaker 2: don't think that's going to happen again. I think you're
- 18:56Speaker 2: going to get a cleaner version of Buffalo this time around.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I don't know about that. Just because you think they're
- 19:03Speaker 3: going to turn over three times, I don't know about three.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But they haven't. They've had trouble turning the ball over
- 19:08Speaker 3: a little bit this year, not that much. And penalties,
- 19:12Speaker 3: I mean, they've been okay, they're kind of middle of
- 19:15Speaker 3: the pack. The Bills are. How are they this low?
- 19:19Speaker 3: And turnover they're twenty third and turnovers, Oh, I'm sorting
- 19:22Speaker 3: that the wrong way. Twenty third few they are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 19:29Speaker 3: eighth in the league, technically tied for six in the league.
- 19:31Speaker 3: And turnovers, they've turned the ball over a lot this year.
- 19:33Speaker 2: They James Cooks fumbled the ball a lot.
- 19:35Speaker 3: They've survived it. Well, James Cook's gonna be playing on Sunday. Yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 3: I don't know. They're going to turn the middle three times.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Maybe it won't be that bad, but I think, like,
- 19:42Speaker 3: I don't think you look at it and say you can't.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I wouldn't say you can't count on the Bills turning
- 19:46Speaker 3: the ball over. Yeah, you wouldn't say that. I would
- 19:51Speaker 3: They among the league leaders and turnovers year. I think
- 19:54Speaker 3: you go and you hope it they turn it over
- 19:56Speaker 3: that many times. I don't think you expect that you
- 19:57Speaker 3: can't count on it three times. I don't. Anyways, let's
- 20:01Speaker 3: they've turned the ball. They've turned the ball over five
- 20:03Speaker 3: games in a row, and three of those five in
- 20:05Speaker 3: their last five games, they've turned the ball over at
- 20:07Speaker 3: least once in each game. In three of those five,
- 20:09Speaker 3: they've turned the ball over three times. Yeah, I guess.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I don't know. I just look at this game and
- 20:15Speaker 2: I you got your you got they got the you know,
- 20:18Speaker 2: kind of the sloppy Bills the first time around. I
- 20:20Speaker 2: would say in a lot of ways, I just don't.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Know if that I think the Bills are sloppy football team.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Here we go. I knew this was coming.
- 20:27Speaker 3: It's not a Bill team. They've turned the ball over. Okay,
- 20:31Speaker 3: they've turned the ball over eighteen times this year. They
- 20:34Speaker 3: turned the ball over eighteen times this year. I can't
- 20:36Speaker 3: just sit there, Bill, they're a sloppy football team.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I didn't say they weren't a sloppy football team, just
- 20:40Speaker 2: did I said they you got the sloppy version of
- 20:42Speaker 2: Buffalo and week.
- 20:43Speaker 3: That implies that there's a non sloppy version. I think
- 20:45Speaker 3: there is a non sloppy version. Well relatively.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I don't think that there's a version of the Bills
- 20:49Speaker 2: that doesn't turn it over three times again, it's called
- 20:51Speaker 2: for eleven penalties.
- 20:52Speaker 3: There's no like, there's that their good team. There's everyone
- 20:54Speaker 3: is a little higher. They're averaging seven penalties a game,
- 20:56Speaker 3: so that one's probably a little high. They're not averaging
- 20:59Speaker 3: three turnovers again, No, but They've done it four times
- 21:01Speaker 3: this year, including three times in the last five weeks.
- 21:03Speaker 2: And they played thirteen games so the year. But as
- 21:07Speaker 2: of late, I don't think this is gonna happen exactly
- 21:10Speaker 2: the way that happened a week five.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I would not bet over two and a half turnovers
- 21:14Speaker 3: for the Buffalo Bills, Okay, but I think to say, well, no,
- 21:17Speaker 3: they're gonna play a really clean football game. They haven't
- 21:20Speaker 3: shown a lot of evidence that they can do that.
- 21:22Speaker 3: They're gonna play football game is maybe cleaner, but cleaner
- 21:25Speaker 3: is not clean. I don't know exactly how it's gonna
- 21:27Speaker 3: manifest itself, but they're not exactly it's we did this
- 21:31Speaker 3: last time. The problem everybody thinks I have with Alan
- 21:34Speaker 3: is more about McDermott. It's not a tight operation, and
- 21:37Speaker 3: that's been exposed more often than not this year.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Okay, So let's good put that to the side because
- 21:44Speaker 2: we can agree to disagree there. In terms of the
- 21:48Speaker 2: actual way the game is schematically unfolded. I think one
- 21:51Speaker 2: of the big things that happened in this game just
- 21:53Speaker 2: sticking with the Patriots offense for a second against the
- 21:56Speaker 2: Bills defense. Ye, in the first half, the Bill's played
- 21:59Speaker 2: a lot of coverage blitz May very much. They they
- 22:03Speaker 2: had a good first half and both defenses kind of
- 22:06Speaker 2: won the first half. In the second half, they came
- 22:08Speaker 2: out and they blitzed May on fifty percent of his
- 22:10Speaker 2: drop backs, and he shredded them. He completed like ninety
- 22:13Speaker 2: three percent of his passes one hundred and eighty yards passing.
- 22:16Speaker 2: He was excellent, unbelievably good in the second half in Buffalo.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Made some unbelievable throws, you know, the ones to digs,
- 22:24Speaker 2: you know, the booty hole shot to set up the
- 22:26Speaker 2: game winning field goal. Just all in general, just was
- 22:30Speaker 2: unbelievable in the second half. I think, not again, I'm
- 22:34Speaker 2: not taking anything away from Drake May. I just think
- 22:36Speaker 2: that the Bills this time around, if they're smart at least,
- 22:40Speaker 2: and I do think that they will do this. I
- 22:42Speaker 2: don't think they're gonna blitz them.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That's a little bit of an if, but you would
- 22:45Speaker 3: think they learned their lessons.
- 22:46Speaker 2: You were just so salty about the Bills. You can't
- 22:49Speaker 2: give him any cret.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Have you not watched this team this year ninety they're
- 22:53Speaker 3: not terrible like they're nine and four, because six and seven,
- 22:56Speaker 3: they're nine and four. Because Josh Allen just keeps doing
- 23:00Speaker 3: ridiculous things and bailing out the rest of the roster.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Wow, that was so nice of you.
- 23:06Speaker 3: As I've always said about the Bills, Josh, that was
- 23:09Speaker 3: big of you, as I've always said, a call like
- 23:13Speaker 3: I see, there's.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Gonna be like fifty percent of the people that are
- 23:16Speaker 2: gonna absolutely hate the first twenty three minutes of the
- 23:18Speaker 2: show because we are just bickering. Uh. Anyways, So I
- 23:22Speaker 2: the Bills blitzed Drake may a ton in the second
- 23:24Speaker 2: half the first time around, he shredded their blitz. It
- 23:27Speaker 2: was not it was not a good strategy for them. Now,
- 23:30Speaker 2: I will say to your point, it does seem like
- 23:34Speaker 2: they kind of fall back on blitzing when things sorted
- 23:37Speaker 2: don't go well for the.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Eensively, they're not a game playing team. They're gonna do
- 23:41Speaker 3: what they're gonna.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Do well, but they they they aren't a game plan team.
- 23:43Speaker 2: But they actually don't blitz a ton, which is kind
- 23:46Speaker 2: of weird. Like overall for the season, they haven't blitzed
- 23:48Speaker 2: a ton. And my understanding and my you know, we've
- 23:52Speaker 2: studied McDermott now for nine years, Like it's not a blitz.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I would not call their defense blitz. A blitz defense
- 23:58Speaker 2: like this is not Brian Flora right, that's coming here.
- 24:01Speaker 2: They actually play, you know, I would call McDermott a
- 24:04Speaker 2: cover two guy, like I think he's a cover two
- 24:06Speaker 2: scheme kind of guy. Obviously four to three front, you know, overfronts,
- 24:10Speaker 2: you know, things like that, a lot of nickel, and
- 24:12Speaker 2: a lot of these things have changed this year. They
- 24:14Speaker 2: haven't played as much nickel. They're much more base and
- 24:17Speaker 2: dime heavy defense, and they've ever been under Sean McDermott.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Their defense right now, I think is probably the worst
- 24:24Speaker 2: Bills defense McDermott has ever had because he's a good
- 24:27Speaker 2: defensive coach. He is, and he's always given their system
- 24:30Speaker 2: has always given the Patriots and problems, especially the McDaniels offense.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Even Brady had some like kind of clunkers against Buffalo
- 24:38Speaker 2: since McDermott has been there. So they usually don't play
- 24:43Speaker 2: a blitz happy defense. They were blitz happy in the
- 24:46Speaker 2: second half against Drake Main week five and got torched.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I just don't expect that to happen again this time around.
- 24:53Speaker 2: And this kind of goes to what we were going
- 24:55Speaker 2: to talk about in terms of the bye week exercise.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I don't know why people keep button Drake May and
- 25:01Speaker 2: I don't think that's going to continue as the competition
- 25:03Speaker 2: and as the team start to get more game plan
- 25:06Speaker 2: heavy and you know, how do we beat the Patriots
- 25:09Speaker 2: that sort of thing. He's just been excellent all year
- 25:12Speaker 2: long against the Blitz. So I expect Buffalo to play
- 25:15Speaker 2: a lot more coverage in this game. And and my
- 25:16Speaker 2: second point about that, I think is related. In the
- 25:20Speaker 2: first matchup, they did not have Christian Benford shadow Stefan Diggs.
- 25:24Speaker 2: He didn't travel with Stefan Diggs. So the Patriots got
- 25:28Speaker 2: Steffan Diggs a lot on Tredavius White, a matchup that
- 25:31Speaker 2: he handledly won. And then they also got him in
- 25:33Speaker 2: the slot a lot where he saw linebackers, safety, slot corners,
- 25:36Speaker 2: Toron Johnson, you know that sort of thing. And he
- 25:39Speaker 2: just had a game. You know, Diggs just went off.
- 25:42Speaker 2: So my guess is, if I was Buffalo, if I
- 25:45Speaker 2: was kind of game planning for Buffalo, the two things
- 25:48Speaker 2: that I would do. I would not blitz, right, I
- 25:50Speaker 2: played coverage. And the second thing I would do especially
- 25:53Speaker 2: on high leverage situations, you know, third fourth downs, things
- 25:56Speaker 2: like that, you know, Benford's a good player, and I
- 25:58Speaker 2: think Benford needs to Shoutowtefon Diggs. If I was Buffalo,
- 26:02Speaker 2: That's what I would do differently than what I did
- 26:03Speaker 2: in Week five.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I'm kind of curious with Diggs. Do we get you know,
- 26:07Speaker 3: he was everybody saw him during that game. He was
- 26:11Speaker 3: on another level. And it's understandable, right, like he's going
- 26:14Speaker 3: back to Buffalo for the first time and all that.
- 26:16Speaker 3: It's not in Buffalo, But like, do we get and
- 26:18Speaker 3: Diggs has been good outside of that Bills game and
- 26:20Speaker 3: he took it, he took it to another place there.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Do we get that stef On Diggs again in this game?
- 26:25Speaker 3: Because Benford's good dig Diggs can beat him. Diggs can
- 26:30Speaker 3: beat them enough if you get that version of him.
- 26:32Speaker 3: But I also wonder if they do do that. You know,
- 26:34Speaker 3: Kishawn Booty had a good game against them in that
- 26:36Speaker 3: first game. Does that open him up to do a
- 26:37Speaker 3: little bit more? Does it open Pop Douglas up to
- 26:40Speaker 3: do a little bit more and kind of test them
- 26:42Speaker 3: with some speed? So their secondary, I mean, their secondary
- 26:45Speaker 3: is not good, Jay, It's really not. So I'd be
- 26:47Speaker 3: curious where the Patriots go if that's the adjustment the
- 26:50Speaker 3: Bills make.
- 26:50Speaker 2: So they're twenty second right now Buffalo and Dvoa. On defense,
- 26:54Speaker 2: they're seventeenth against the pass. They're thirtieth against the run. Now,
- 26:57Speaker 2: they've always been a little bit of a leaky run
- 26:59Speaker 2: defense because they play so much nickel, but they've been
- 27:03Speaker 2: This is as bad of a Buffalo pass defense as
- 27:06Speaker 2: the Patriots have faced in the last you know, since
- 27:08Speaker 2: really twenty twenty, since the Bills became you know, started
- 27:11Speaker 2: winning the division every year. So that this defense is
- 27:15Speaker 2: I would say vulnerable if I was, you know, looking
- 27:18Speaker 2: at it objectively. The other thing that I mean, I
- 27:21Speaker 2: want to get to more of that in a second.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Yeah, the other thing. Just let's talk about.
- 27:25Speaker 2: The other side of the ball and then we can
- 27:26Speaker 2: sort of talk about the current state of the Bills
- 27:29Speaker 2: a little bit more. The first time around, the Patriots,
- 27:34Speaker 2: I think the number one thing that they did that
- 27:36Speaker 2: was really important in that game was they shut down
- 27:38Speaker 2: James Cook and I don't know if they have those
- 27:41Speaker 2: levers anymore without Milton Williams, and hopefully they get Toga back,
- 27:45Speaker 2: who was out there on Monday but still looked kind
- 27:47Speaker 2: of limited in practice. We'll find out more about that
- 27:50Speaker 2: over the next couple of days. But in the first matchup,
- 27:54Speaker 2: thirty six percent rushing success rate for James Cook. Below
- 27:57Speaker 2: average certainly for him, but even for the league. They
- 28:01Speaker 2: really kind of shut down Buffalo's run game, and they
- 28:03Speaker 2: put them in second and third and long, put the
- 28:06Speaker 2: game in Allen's hands, you know, made the pass offense
- 28:08Speaker 2: beat them, that sort of thing. I understand that sounds
- 28:11Speaker 2: counterintuitive when you're going up against Josh Allen and the
- 28:14Speaker 2: MVP of the.
- 28:14Speaker 3: League, when you look at his who his receivers.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Are any quarterback that if you live in third and
- 28:19Speaker 2: long is gonna have not as.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Great of a day as you could except Drake May apparently.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but even Drake May is converting third and long's
- 28:26Speaker 2: at like forty We thought first week, aren't last week.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Aren't they better on like fourth and five than they
- 28:32Speaker 3: are on third and one.
- 28:33Speaker 2: It's close enough, Yeah, it's if they're not technically, but
- 28:36Speaker 2: it's relative to the situation. It's it's pretty clear it's
- 28:40Speaker 2: closer than it should be given the circumstances. But shutting
- 28:45Speaker 2: down James Cook the first time around, I think was
- 28:47Speaker 2: a huge part of it. I keep saying it Their
- 28:49Speaker 2: most consistent part of the Buffalo offense is their run game.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Ye their pass game is extremely explosive and Allen is
- 28:55Speaker 2: extremely dangerous. Still scrambles, you know, second react, you know,
- 29:00Speaker 2: extended plays, all that kind of stuff. They're number in
- 29:03Speaker 2: the league and explosive play rate across the board. But
- 29:07Speaker 2: in terms of their run game, you know, we saw
- 29:11Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago what they did to Pittsburgh.
- 29:13Speaker 2: You know, that was two hundred and fifty yards on
- 29:16Speaker 2: the ground right at you right, And if you play
- 29:19Speaker 2: that kind of game against Buffalo, then you know they're
- 29:21Speaker 2: more under center, they're more run heavy. They're basically setting
- 29:27Speaker 2: career highs for Josh Allen and like designed run rate,
- 29:31Speaker 2: under center rate, play action rate, like all those things
- 29:34Speaker 2: are up across the board from Buffalo right now. They
- 29:37Speaker 2: are a turnaround, hand the ball, off run the football
- 29:40Speaker 2: type of team right now. Like that that's what they do,
- 29:43Speaker 2: you know, play action, move the pocket, under center, all
- 29:47Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. That's that's sort of been their identity.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And I think to your point about the turnovers, I
- 29:52Speaker 2: think that that's a response to them trying to be
- 29:55Speaker 2: a little bit keep it a little bit more on
- 29:58Speaker 2: the rails and be a little bit more consistent and
- 30:00Speaker 2: a little bit more you know, had better ball security,
- 30:03Speaker 2: take less sacks like all that kind of stuff. But
- 30:06Speaker 2: that was a big part of that game back in
- 30:07Speaker 2: week five, was shutting down James Cook.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and you made the point there at the beginning,
- 30:12Speaker 3: and Mike Rabel has asked this on Monday, like how
- 30:14Speaker 3: viable is the film from week five and how much
- 30:17Speaker 3: do you look at that versus things changing? To me,
- 30:20Speaker 3: the biggest change from week five week five, right, week four,
- 30:24Speaker 3: week five, yep, the biggest change from week five to
- 30:27Speaker 3: now is the Patriots not having Milton Williams. That is
- 30:31Speaker 3: the biggest difference. We didn't talk about it enough after
- 30:33Speaker 3: that game, I think probably because it was Drake May's
- 30:35Speaker 3: coming out party on the national stage. But Milton Williams
- 30:38Speaker 3: was so good in that game. He's playing hurt and
- 30:41Speaker 3: he was so good in that game, containing the run,
- 30:44Speaker 3: running down Josh Allen in the pocket when he's trying
- 30:46Speaker 3: to scramble, things like that. He was awesome. And that's
- 30:50Speaker 3: a major loss. Like he said, getting Tonga back will
- 30:52Speaker 3: help if they get him back. You know, mitigates it
- 30:54Speaker 3: a little bit, but you really, really miss Milton Williams
- 30:58Speaker 3: in this game because he was so good against the
- 31:01Speaker 3: Bills in that last matchup. That to me is the
- 31:03Speaker 3: biggest hurdle for the Patriots in terms of, you know,
- 31:06Speaker 3: game planning and adjustments you're gonna have to make because
- 31:08Speaker 3: playing team twice in a year, there's always a little
- 31:10Speaker 3: more that us going to the game plan. Yeah, the
- 31:12Speaker 3: biggest adjustment for the Patriots is how do you replace
- 31:17Speaker 3: what Milton Williams gave you in that first game? Yeah, No,
- 31:19Speaker 3: it's absolutely true.
- 31:20Speaker 2: The other element of that game fort man coverage for
- 31:25Speaker 2: the Patriots in that game was was not their highest
- 31:28Speaker 2: but close to their highest.
- 31:29Speaker 3: And the way they played man coverage they bottle. Isn't
- 31:32Speaker 3: that off you know, soft, because they were. It's the
- 31:35Speaker 3: way you know, we've talked about, at least I talked
- 31:37Speaker 3: about it. That's how I've kind of wanted them to
- 31:39Speaker 3: play coverage all year. Yeah, and so hopefully that comes back.
- 31:42Speaker 3: I like, I really liked the way they played coverage
- 31:44Speaker 3: in that game that I wouldn't mind seeing come back. Agreed.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I think that that was probably my favorite game they've
- 31:49Speaker 2: played all year from a coverage plan perspective. Yeah, you know,
- 31:54Speaker 2: man to man on these receivers. Buffalo's receivers are not
- 31:58Speaker 2: anything to write home about. You know, Khalisha care is
- 32:01Speaker 2: a nice player, Daltkin Kaid's a nice player when he's healthy.
- 32:04Speaker 2: But this is not prime Stefan Diggs in Buffalo anymore,
- 32:08Speaker 2: where it's impossible to play man coverage against the.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Guy that good.
- 32:12Speaker 2: They don't have that number one, true number one receiver.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Now it's worked in their favor at times because they've
- 32:18Speaker 2: spread the ball around a little bit more than maybe
- 32:20Speaker 2: they did during the Digs years. But like I was saying,
- 32:23Speaker 2: in terms of like their run game, you know, they
- 32:25Speaker 2: don't they don't do what they used to do. This
- 32:27Speaker 2: is not an aggressive early down pass offense anymore. That's
- 32:30Speaker 2: just throw throw, throw, throw throw. You know, this is
- 32:33Speaker 2: a much more balanced team. This is a much more
- 32:35Speaker 2: run centric team. Uh And just kind of going to
- 32:38Speaker 2: what they are currently right now. You know, I think
- 32:42Speaker 2: a couple of things about their offense, and we can
- 32:45Speaker 2: we're probably closer to on the same page about this
- 32:48Speaker 2: and than maybe we think. You know, I think the
- 32:51Speaker 2: number one thing that I would see with their offense
- 32:55Speaker 2: is that and I'm hoping that with the extra week
- 32:59Speaker 2: that like Vrabel and the coaching staff is going to
- 33:02Speaker 2: be able to really be prepared for this game. I
- 33:05Speaker 2: see a lot of repeat plays on their film. They
- 33:08Speaker 2: run the same, like half a dozen plays in certain situations.
- 33:12Speaker 2: You know, they run a lot of mesh on third down,
- 33:14Speaker 2: you know, crossing routes over the middle of the field.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Usually it's mesh rail where they peer with a wheel
- 33:20Speaker 2: route out of the backfield by cook or Shakir on
- 33:22Speaker 2: motion or something like that. They run a lot of mesh.
- 33:26Speaker 2: They run a lot of outside zone, especially to the
- 33:28Speaker 2: weak side of the formation. They run a lot of duo.
- 33:31Speaker 2: They run a lot of the same plays. They just
- 33:34Speaker 2: run them all well, and so they kind of just
- 33:37Speaker 2: are that type of offense right now. There's certain though,
- 33:40Speaker 2: you know, situational indicators and just kind of keys that
- 33:43Speaker 2: you can read. I was texting you about this the
- 33:45Speaker 2: other day. They run this like pop pass play action
- 33:51Speaker 2: that we've saw for years with Rob Gronkowski with the
- 33:53Speaker 2: Patriots and Tom Brady. You pull the backside guard, you
- 33:57Speaker 2: get the linebackers to bite up on the pole, and
- 34:00Speaker 2: then you hit the crossing route to the tight end
- 34:02Speaker 2: or the same route to the tight end right behind
- 34:04Speaker 2: the linebackers once they step up into the line of scrimmage.
- 34:08Speaker 2: They want to guess, how often do you think that
- 34:10Speaker 2: they actually run the ball from under center with a puller,
- 34:16Speaker 2: actually run it, not play action, but hand the ball
- 34:18Speaker 2: off to James Cook.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Is it a round number? It is a very low
- 34:22Speaker 3: round number. Zero five percent. Okay, five percent of the time,
- 34:26Speaker 3: because zero's round, that's the joke. So five is not
- 34:29Speaker 3: a round.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Yeah, five percent of the time they actually run the ball.
- 34:33Speaker 2: So I was saying to you this the other day, like,
- 34:35Speaker 2: why would you scream downhill at the line of scrimmage
- 34:37Speaker 2: if you see them pull a guard Like that's clearly
- 34:40Speaker 2: it's clearly going to be play action. It's going to
- 34:42Speaker 2: be play action ninety five percent of the time. So
- 34:44Speaker 2: there's these little indicators, these little keys, these types of
- 34:48Speaker 2: things that when you watch this Bill's offense on film, Uh,
- 34:52Speaker 2: with some extra time to prepare for it, I think
- 34:54Speaker 2: the Patriots are going to be able to key on
- 34:56Speaker 2: these things. Now, that's not to say it's easy to
- 34:58Speaker 2: stop them, because they have Josh Allen. They have a
- 35:01Speaker 2: good offense. You know, they're top five in the league
- 35:03Speaker 2: in pretty much every metric. If you want to go
- 35:05Speaker 2: with points, you want to go at EPA, you want
- 35:08Speaker 2: to go with yards, DVA, whatever they're They're very good offense,
- 35:11Speaker 2: but they've become predictable a little bit on offense. I
- 35:15Speaker 2: think the main reason they've become so predictable is that
- 35:19Speaker 2: it's been a revolving door of weapons around Josh Allen
- 35:21Speaker 2: trying to find the right mix, and so just they
- 35:24Speaker 2: don't have a ton of time on task. You know,
- 35:26Speaker 2: we talk a lot about the Patriots and their health
- 35:29Speaker 2: and stuff like that. A big part of that is
- 35:31Speaker 2: that May Digs, Booty, Henry Douglas. They've all been repping
- 35:37Speaker 2: since like July. You know, Gabe Davis, yeah he's been
- 35:41Speaker 2: there before, but with this collection, in this group, Gave
- 35:45Speaker 2: Davis just got there like three weeks ago, Brandon Cooks
- 35:48Speaker 2: just got there like two weeks ago or one week again.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Cooks hadn't even been in the system before.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So, like we're talking about a lot of new favorite
- 35:54Speaker 2: you know, Shavers is playing a ton for them on
- 35:56Speaker 2: the outside. He's a new player to this group. So
- 36:00Speaker 2: I think you look at all these different types of things.
- 36:02Speaker 2: I do think that there are certain things that if
- 36:05Speaker 2: you just key in on situational tendencies. You know, they
- 36:08Speaker 2: don't run the ball very much at a poller, you
- 36:10Speaker 2: know with pollers, so if you see a pulling guard,
- 36:13Speaker 2: then it's probably play action. It's probably not a run.
- 36:17Speaker 2: They have a lot of window dressing or eye candy
- 36:20Speaker 2: to their offense. They're number one in the league in
- 36:22Speaker 2: motion rate. They have a lot of false pullers with
- 36:25Speaker 2: your run actions. They do a lot of this different
- 36:28Speaker 2: stuff and then they play kind of develops after the
- 36:31Speaker 2: snap and it's kind of the same thing, right, You
- 36:34Speaker 2: just kind of have to sort through the mess first.
- 36:37Speaker 2: So if you have good eye discipline, you're good with
- 36:40Speaker 2: your keys, anticipation, things like that. I do think there
- 36:43Speaker 2: is a formula here man coverage, you know, understanding their
- 36:48Speaker 2: situational tendencies and their go to plays that you see
- 36:52Speaker 2: games like Houston where they sack Allen eight times and
- 36:55Speaker 2: they kind of dominate the game defensively.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's a breakdown. How much to add you're
- 37:01Speaker 3: right they I mean against the Steelers, how many times
- 37:05Speaker 3: did they run that same so they you know, outside
- 37:08Speaker 3: it was outside zone stretch run whatever that was.
- 37:11Speaker 2: So they ran between outside zone and duo, which is
- 37:14Speaker 2: just the downhill double teams, which is the compliment to
- 37:17Speaker 2: outside zone for a lot of these teams, they ran
- 37:19Speaker 2: the ball taking Allen scrambles out. They ran it forty
- 37:23Speaker 2: three times. Forty out of forty three runs were those
- 37:26Speaker 2: two plays outside zone or.
- 37:28Speaker 3: You know, the Steelers never adjusted to it, So at
- 37:29Speaker 3: a shirt at a certain point, shame on the Steelers
- 37:32Speaker 3: for that. Yeah, it's not They're not exactly going Joe
- 37:36Speaker 3: Brady's not going deep in the bag. She think it's
- 37:38Speaker 3: not a deep bag for Joe Brady right now.
- 37:40Speaker 2: What they do really and like I said, they just
- 37:43Speaker 2: dress up the plays differently, So they have motions they use,
- 37:47Speaker 2: you know, maybe a slightly different formation, or maybe they
- 37:50Speaker 2: run it out of a slightly different personnel grouping. You know,
- 37:53Speaker 2: they're big eleven, twelve, twenty one, they kind of use
- 37:57Speaker 2: all three. So sometimes they just kind of like, we're
- 38:00Speaker 2: gonna run outside zone out of eleven, and then we're
- 38:03Speaker 2: gonna put twelve on the field and it's still gonna
- 38:05Speaker 2: be outside zone, but now we're just running it out
- 38:06Speaker 2: of different groupings. So it's presented a little bit differently
- 38:09Speaker 2: to the defense, and so that type of stuff can
- 38:12Speaker 2: be difficult for defenses. You know, how are we gonna
- 38:15Speaker 2: match twelve? Are we gonna match twelve in base or
- 38:19Speaker 2: are we gonna match twelve in nickel?
- 38:20Speaker 4: Right?
- 38:20Speaker 2: Like, how are we gonna handle you know, those types
- 38:24Speaker 2: of different formations and groupings. But at the end of
- 38:26Speaker 2: the day, when they snap the ball, it's just outside zone, right,
- 38:29Speaker 2: So if you can get through all of the mess,
- 38:31Speaker 2: all the nonsense. Now, the other element of this, the
- 38:36Speaker 2: numbers in the eye test tell you that they have
- 38:39Speaker 2: been worse against man coverage than they have against zone coverage.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Allen's been really really good against zone all year. I
- 38:44Speaker 2: think a big part of that is zone is quarterback
- 38:48Speaker 2: and system typically like just rule of thumb, the quarterback
- 38:51Speaker 2: reading out the coverage, finding the space in the zone,
- 38:54Speaker 2: and then scheme like scheming open receivers. Man to man
- 38:59Speaker 2: is about the receivers, like we're gonna put this game
- 39:01Speaker 2: on Bruffalo's receivers. Your guys against our guys. Can you
- 39:05Speaker 2: win one on one matchups? So it's still again a
- 39:08Speaker 2: net positive, but so far they've been worse against man.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Now the tricky part against man, because I love the
- 39:15Speaker 2: Patriots cornerback trio against this Bill's weapons group like I
- 39:20Speaker 2: think Gonzales Davis and Marcus Jones have a really good
- 39:23Speaker 2: chance of like controlling this game in the secondary for
- 39:26Speaker 2: the Patriots. The rub is Allen right, like, how are
- 39:30Speaker 2: you going to rush him? How are you going to
- 39:32Speaker 2: spy him?
- 39:33Speaker 3: Potentially? And if you're in man now your back's turned,
- 39:36Speaker 3: so you have to.
- 39:37Speaker 2: So you have to have a exactly you have to
- 39:39Speaker 2: have a rush plan. You can't just play man to
- 39:42Speaker 2: man and then have all four guys in the rush
- 39:45Speaker 2: to pin their ears back. So whether that's rushing five
- 39:49Speaker 2: to try to cover all the gaps on the line
- 39:51Speaker 2: of scrimmage, whether that's spying him, like whatever the case
- 39:54Speaker 2: may be, that you have to have some sort of
- 39:56Speaker 2: rush plan.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Who would you use it as a spy in this game?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Because they try?
- 40:00Speaker 2: I had Schooler and it didn't go so well in
- 40:02Speaker 2: Week five, got a penalty on the sideline.
- 40:04Speaker 3: We give another shot, I might say, yes, the athleticism,
- 40:07Speaker 3: if not him, Yeah, I don't know that this is
- 40:11Speaker 3: so I'm doing. It's nice when I'm talking about the
- 40:13Speaker 3: draft this kind this time of year, but I am
- 40:15Speaker 3: still doing my annual like you know, players to watch
- 40:18Speaker 3: in college football playoff thing. I started working on that yesterday. Yeah,
- 40:21Speaker 3: and there's a lot of guys that like here are
- 40:22Speaker 3: a lot of linebackers that I'm just like the guy
- 40:25Speaker 3: like that that speed, you know, track down some of
- 40:27Speaker 3: these quarterbacks. I might give school another shot. If not him,
- 40:31Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe Marte Mapu, although he struggled in
- 40:33Speaker 3: that role against Alan in past years, He's done it
- 40:36Speaker 3: a little bit, so yeah, yeah, I might go Schooler again. Honestly.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's to me that's one of the bigger
- 40:44Speaker 2: things about this matchup because I think the Patriots should
- 40:46Speaker 2: and will want to play as much man to man
- 40:49Speaker 2: as possible. But obviously you worry about Alan extending plays
- 40:53Speaker 2: or or just picking me right for try Dell Pettis
- 40:57Speaker 2: because he's just not that big, Like I think that's
- 40:59Speaker 2: the thing.
- 40:59Speaker 3: That's you need side. But he is. He's been playing
- 41:02Speaker 3: good football series on the field a lot.
- 41:04Speaker 2: That's the thing that the thing that like maybe Dell
- 41:06Speaker 2: p maybe they played dime with del Pettis. Yeah, and
- 41:09Speaker 2: it might not be Pettus who's the spy, but it
- 41:11Speaker 2: allows him to get some more speed on the field
- 41:13Speaker 2: to spy him. Uh.
- 41:14Speaker 3: The biggest thing with with.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Alan that I think is makes him so hard as
- 41:19Speaker 2: a runner is people don't realize how big he is,
- 41:22Speaker 2: Like he's he's legitimately close to Cam Newton.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Rabel talked about him.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like six six two hundred and thirty five
- 41:29Speaker 2: two hundred and forty pounds.
- 41:30Speaker 3: So he's a tank. He's six five seven.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's tough to bring down in the open field
- 41:36Speaker 2: because of that. Uh so he and he's pretty fast,
- 41:39Speaker 2: but he's also just he's a tank. You know, he's
- 41:41Speaker 2: a tank in the open.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Field to thirty seven fields. I would take the over
- 41:47Speaker 3: on that. This isn't me insulting him, calling him fat.
- 41:49Speaker 3: I don't think he's your thirty seven. I think he's
- 41:50Speaker 3: closer to fifty.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a big boy. Yeah, he's a he's a
- 41:54Speaker 2: big dude. All Right, everybody thinks that I'm a Josh
- 41:56Speaker 2: Allen apologist. Everybody thinks you hate Josh Allen. So before
- 41:59Speaker 2: we wrap this up, ye, where do you stand with
- 42:01Speaker 2: Josh Allen? Right now?
- 42:04Speaker 3: I mean I stand. I've always stood with Josh Allen.
- 42:06Speaker 3: He's a good quarterback. But I think sometimes people, for
- 42:09Speaker 3: whatever reason, like the love for this guy, are blinded
- 42:12Speaker 3: and in misplaced credit, Like the forty whatever yard touchdown
- 42:16Speaker 3: run he had against the Bengals. Don't be wrong, it's impressive.
- 42:19Speaker 3: We're not going to talk about how that was a
- 42:20Speaker 3: really stupid zero blitz by the Bengals and he had
- 42:22Speaker 3: a red carpet walk into the end zone, Like yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 3: that I gotta be Even as a Josh Allen guy,
- 42:28Speaker 3: that particular play didn't really move me, you know. So
- 42:32Speaker 3: it's like, you know, he had the touchdown where it's
- 42:34Speaker 3: a good play by him to extend it. I think
- 42:36Speaker 3: it was the first touchdownchhound's ridiculous. Well, there's one where
- 42:40Speaker 3: it was forty four I think is Osai whoever it
- 42:42Speaker 3: was for the Bengals. Yeah, just doesn't turn around. If
- 42:45Speaker 3: he turns around, he breaks the pass up easily throw.
- 42:49Speaker 3: I think it was a good play to extend it.
- 42:51Speaker 3: But they could have been defended a lot better. So
- 42:53Speaker 3: that's just where I'm at, Like, yeah, he's a good player,
- 42:57Speaker 3: but I think people get you get too carried away
- 42:59Speaker 3: with him, and it just annoys me because at the
- 43:01Speaker 3: end of the day, and look, this won't be decided
- 43:03Speaker 3: this week. Yeah, he now has an MVP. Although it's
- 43:07Speaker 3: that I've called it the Joel Embat MVP got more
- 43:10Speaker 3: Lifetime Achievement Award than a real MVP. There it is
- 43:14Speaker 3: the postseason successes has not really been there, Like people
- 43:18Speaker 3: put him on the level and I know Burrow choked
- 43:20Speaker 3: badly in that game. Joe Burrow's been with super Bowl.
- 43:23Speaker 2: You know.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson has multiple MVPs, Mahomes obviously Mahomes. I've just
- 43:27Speaker 3: always kind of struggled to put him in that tier
- 43:29Speaker 3: because the big picture accolade, he's a very talented player,
- 43:34Speaker 3: and he has moments where he's very impressive. He hasn't
- 43:38Speaker 3: reached that group with the big picture accolades.
- 43:40Speaker 2: In my mind, I think that's a fair assessment in
- 43:44Speaker 2: terms of the I mean, there's no arguing like he
- 43:46Speaker 2: hasn't made a Super Bowl. He's made one AFC Championship
- 43:48Speaker 2: game and lost.
- 43:49Speaker 3: And I'll say this too because people call in and
- 43:51Speaker 3: get Matt while you're hating him, and you still gotta
- 43:53Speaker 3: givehim a chance. I don't think Josh Allen is the
- 43:56Speaker 3: biggest reason the Bills have not won. I think it's
- 43:58Speaker 3: Sean McDermott. I can't be clear enough about that, Like
- 44:02Speaker 3: if they had another they should have gotten rid of
- 44:04Speaker 3: mcnermot two years ago. Yeah, they should have gotten rid
- 44:06Speaker 3: of him probably last year too, like I, well, yeah,
- 44:09Speaker 3: like they there are deeper issues there that, Like I
- 44:14Speaker 3: I don't think Josh Allen is a player that you
- 44:16Speaker 3: can't win with. I think that's more bills issue than
- 44:18Speaker 3: a Josh Allen issh you. But there are times that
- 44:21Speaker 3: he hasn't helped the cause.
- 44:22Speaker 2: So I think there's two things with Josh Allen that
- 44:24Speaker 2: sort of move the needle in my direction. The first
- 44:29Speaker 2: thing is obvious, like he's just fun to watch, like
- 44:31Speaker 2: he just makes some crazy plays. It's it's very similar
- 44:34Speaker 2: to Drake, like he's just yeah, they just make unworldly
- 44:38Speaker 2: plays like these just highlight reel plays.
- 44:40Speaker 3: So does Mahomes, So does Lamar.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and I like watching those not really Mahomes. Mahomes
- 44:45Speaker 2: not so much anymore watching Lamar too.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Have you seen the splits on Mahomes Preen post Tyreek
- 44:50Speaker 3: Hill By the way, now we have more of a
- 44:51Speaker 3: sample size, but it's just the point p'sally pleasing people.
- 44:55Speaker 3: It is with Lamar, Yes, people act like it's it's
- 44:59Speaker 3: I don't want to say Josh Alla it's not different
- 45:00Speaker 3: because he is I don't think it's there are other
- 45:04Speaker 3: guys kind of doing similar stuff to what Alan's doing,
- 45:06Speaker 3: it might look a little different, like and it's not
- 45:08Speaker 3: a lot of them.
- 45:08Speaker 2: I think Drake Man is doing stuff that's I think.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Drake is I think Lamar to an extent, YEA, I
- 45:13Speaker 3: know I'm probably missing some Lamar is a different runner,
- 45:15Speaker 3: but yeah, I think the the other element.
- 45:18Speaker 2: With Josh Allen, it just from my standpoint, is that
- 45:22Speaker 2: he's probably the hardest quarterback to defend in the in
- 45:25Speaker 2: the league because he's just so otherworldly talented physically, Like
- 45:31Speaker 2: there's really not a weakness to his game from a
- 45:35Speaker 2: physical talent standpoint, because of how good he is with
- 45:38Speaker 2: his arm man with his legs.
- 45:40Speaker 3: I think Lamar is harder to defend.
- 45:42Speaker 2: I don't.
- 45:42Speaker 3: I think Lamar LaMarsh Allen's probably harder to tackle.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Lamar to me, and I love Lamar, you know, yeah,
- 45:49Speaker 2: but Lamar is a between the numbers thrower. Like if
- 45:51Speaker 2: you can get Lamar and we'll talk about this a
- 45:53Speaker 2: lot more next week, but if you can.
- 45:55Speaker 3: Get Lamar, and he's also this year, is not if
- 45:58Speaker 3: you can.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Funnel the ball outside the numbers and make him push
- 46:00Speaker 2: the ball outside the numbers, Lamar is not the same.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Whereas I think Alan is capable of hitting any spot
- 46:08Speaker 2: on the field, and I think he's capable of running
- 46:11Speaker 2: over any Yeah.
- 46:11Speaker 3: The fact I think some of it is you go
- 46:14Speaker 3: to go back to what we talked about about the
- 46:15Speaker 3: issues running deeper with Alan. He's been through. How many
- 46:17Speaker 3: offensive coordinators now like handful the way the Ravens use
- 46:22Speaker 3: Lamar jack like, because they really encourage you to play heavy,
- 46:26Speaker 3: and now you want to take these things away that
- 46:30Speaker 3: aren't easy to take away when you're in a base defense.
- 46:33Speaker 3: And I maybe maybe, yeah, we're doing the semantics thing again. No,
- 46:38Speaker 3: I hear what you're saying is so unique. Lamar is
- 46:42Speaker 3: harder to game plan for Alan. Maybe in the moment
- 46:44Speaker 3: for the players on the field, is tougher to defend.
- 46:46Speaker 3: But I think in terms of the x's and o's,
- 46:48Speaker 3: in terms of the chess match, Lamar provides more of
- 46:51Speaker 3: a challenge.
- 46:52Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying. In terms of the uniqueness
- 46:54Speaker 2: of Baltimore's offense. You know, Baltimore's No one runs an
- 46:57Speaker 2: offense like Baltimore because they can't.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Rightmar is the only quarterback that can do it. So
- 47:01Speaker 3: that might be more difficult.
- 47:02Speaker 2: But I feel like without and I think we say
- 47:05Speaker 2: the same thing about Drake May, we're getting to say
- 47:07Speaker 2: that we're getting there. There's just nothing that's off the
- 47:10Speaker 2: menu with Josh Allen, whereas I not that it's off
- 47:14Speaker 2: the menu with Lamar. But like Lamar's ability again to
- 47:19Speaker 2: throw the ball outside numbers, throw the deep ball outside
- 47:23Speaker 2: the numbers on go routes this year. I looked this
- 47:26Speaker 2: up the other day because I was doing some Ravens stuff.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Lamar is six for twenty this year, throwing the go
- 47:33Speaker 2: routes six for twenty, right, Like, that's just not and
- 47:35Speaker 2: maybe that's more about the receivers than it is about him,
- 47:38Speaker 2: but it's just not a very high percentage. So I
- 47:40Speaker 2: think Alan kind of threatens more blades of grass, if
- 47:45Speaker 2: you will, than Lamar Jackson does. But both of them
- 47:48Speaker 2: are awesome. Ye, both of them are great. But I
- 47:51Speaker 2: think with this Bills team, this is the weakest that
- 47:54Speaker 2: I've seen the Bills in quite some time, probably since
- 47:58Speaker 2: before Alan became MVP candidate, you know, twenty twenty ish
- 48:03Speaker 2: around there. Defensively, this is a is the worst that
- 48:06Speaker 2: I've seen them. No, Ed Oliver, He's not coming back
- 48:09Speaker 2: for this game. Joey Bosas banged up, Terrelle Bernard is
- 48:12Speaker 2: banged up. But I would also look at their secondary
- 48:15Speaker 2: and outside of Benford, they've kind of struggled to move
- 48:18Speaker 2: into this next era in the secondary where it's no
- 48:21Speaker 2: more and I know he's back technically playing a role,
- 48:24Speaker 2: but yeah, there's no more Poyer, there's no more hide,
- 48:27Speaker 2: there's no more you know, he's again. These guys are
- 48:29Speaker 2: all there because it's the big Trey White is kind
- 48:31Speaker 2: of washed, right, Toron Johnson even there, they're really good.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Nickel Corner, he's kind of having a little bit of
- 48:37Speaker 2: a down year as far as he's you know, his
- 48:40Speaker 2: play is considered. Maybe his play is starting to move
- 48:42Speaker 2: in that opposite direction. And then the bigger thing is
- 48:46Speaker 2: outside of James Cook and Khalil Shakir, their weapons just
- 48:48Speaker 2: haven't been consisted. Yeah, there's no there's no downfield passing
- 48:51Speaker 2: game really for them right now. You know, when you
- 48:55Speaker 2: ever you see Josh Allen in like the middle of
- 48:57Speaker 2: the table in terms of air yards pass attempt, you're like, wait,
- 49:01Speaker 2: that Josh Allen is in the is like twentieth in
- 49:04Speaker 2: air yards, Like that's crazy. Uh So, I don't think
- 49:08Speaker 2: that this is uh the.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Beast, right, And it goes back to my point on Alan,
- 49:13Speaker 3: Like when they were cooking her Alan Allen Allen, and
- 49:15Speaker 3: I said this at that I didn't. I said this
- 49:17Speaker 3: well before he became a Patriot. Stefon Diggs as good
- 49:20Speaker 3: as he was in Buffalo. Yes, I thought was one
- 49:24Speaker 3: of the most underrated players in the league because he
- 49:26Speaker 3: did not get nearly enough credit for what that offense
- 49:29Speaker 3: was because everybody just wanted to solo give credit to
- 49:32Speaker 3: Alan and some of the other guys by others like
- 49:35Speaker 3: Gabe Dave was still there, right, and you see what
- 49:38Speaker 3: they've become without that receiver. I don't know. I feel
- 49:41Speaker 3: like I've been proven right a little bit on that
- 49:43Speaker 3: that Stefon Diggs as good as he was in Buffalo,
- 49:46Speaker 3: and I think people recognize him for being a very
- 49:47Speaker 3: good player. He did not get nearly the credit he
- 49:50Speaker 3: should have gotten for what that offense was at its peak.
- 49:53Speaker 3: I mean, you're seeing what he's doing here, and you'd
- 49:55Speaker 3: see what he's doing here, and he's helped the engine
- 49:58Speaker 3: move here.
- 49:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I like he's a good player. He's a
- 50:01Speaker 2: good chain mover, he's really good with the ball in
- 50:04Speaker 2: his hands. You know, he's basically like a running back
- 50:06Speaker 2: with the football in his hands. Kincaid's given them problems.
- 50:09Speaker 2: You know, had a big game in Week five. We'll
- 50:10Speaker 2: see how healthy he is.
- 50:11Speaker 3: We had a tight end thing again with that.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Yeah, for this, we'll get to that in a little bit.
- 50:15Speaker 2: I think that's the But at the end of the day,
- 50:19Speaker 2: like I said, this is the the easiest Bill's offense
- 50:23Speaker 2: to defend that they've played in a while. How about that.
- 50:26Speaker 3: You know, guys, we're talking about how are they to defend?
- 50:28Speaker 2: This is about as easy as to going to get
- 50:30Speaker 2: So don't don't blow this opportunity.
- 50:31Speaker 3: We'll we'll see how Brandon Bean continues to mangle this
- 50:35Speaker 3: roster next year, I think.
- 50:38Speaker 2: And I want to move on, but I think you
- 50:39Speaker 2: make a good point about their their brain trust.
- 50:43Speaker 3: It's not just Sean McDermott like this. This roster is
- 50:46Speaker 3: not as good. Well well, so here's why I put
- 50:49Speaker 3: McDermott ahead of Bean in terms of the issues.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Because to me, they're they're they're both came from Carolina.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Started to cut you off, but they both came from Carolina.
- 50:56Speaker 2: They're they're tight at the hip, like that's they are pairing.
- 50:59Speaker 2: To me, it's it's both of them. And I don't
- 51:02Speaker 2: think this roster is as good as it's been.
- 51:03Speaker 3: But when the roster was better, McDermot still couldn't get
- 51:06Speaker 3: over the top. That's like like Bean gave him the
- 51:08Speaker 3: tools at one point. He doesn't have them now. Yeah,
- 51:10Speaker 3: he doesn't have them now, but being gained the tools
- 51:12Speaker 3: at one point. But like you look at us, they've
- 51:14Speaker 3: tried to reset it. I mean, I don't know if
- 51:15Speaker 3: you want to take a key on Coleman Victory lap
- 51:17Speaker 3: I know he caught a touchdown last week, but yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 3: it's they they might need a reset there.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Yeah, they their roster, just looking at you know, the receivers,
- 51:27Speaker 2: and I know what they tried to they they've tried
- 51:29Speaker 2: to argue and he's actually argued about this publicly. Bean
- 51:32Speaker 2: has is is they tried there, They tried to claim
- 51:34Speaker 2: they're doing the Brady thing or like Alan is so
- 51:37Speaker 2: good that he doesn't need the superstar receivers because he's
- 51:40Speaker 2: good enough to elevate the receivers that they have.
- 51:43Speaker 3: And you better have some talent on defense.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but their defense has dropped off, and that's that's
- 51:47Speaker 2: on him. And they've made some weird draft picks, and
- 51:51Speaker 2: in kyr Ilum Max Hairston.
- 51:55Speaker 3: We like Kyrie Elum, we can't well, we.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Liked him for the Patriots, but they drafted a man
- 52:01Speaker 2: corner to play in his own system. And then they
- 52:03Speaker 2: also drafted Max Harriston, who I wasn't really too gung
- 52:07Speaker 2: ho about, not because he's been injured and like, that's
- 52:09Speaker 2: not why. But I wasn't like a huge hole.
- 52:11Speaker 3: There were I think off field flags there too.
- 52:15Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to say that I know everything.
- 52:17Speaker 3: It's the weirdest thing they've done is still the one
- 52:19Speaker 3: they didn't the move they didn't make, which is essentially
- 52:22Speaker 3: trading Xavier Worthy to the Chiefs. I will never understand
- 52:25Speaker 3: why they did it.
- 52:26Speaker 2: He hasn't been great either, He's.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Been a lot better than Keon Coleman. He's been more functional.
- 52:31Speaker 3: The fact that he's even if he hasn't been amazing,
- 52:34Speaker 3: he's an ideal fit for what the Chiefs do. The
- 52:36Speaker 3: Chiefs at the time were the Bill's biggest roadblock in
- 52:39Speaker 3: the AFC. I get why maybe Buffalo wanted to trade
- 52:41Speaker 3: that pick. I get why they maybe wanted to trade down.
- 52:44Speaker 3: They didn't get nearly enough to trade down, and they
- 52:46Speaker 3: gave a player who's ideal for the system to the
- 52:49Speaker 3: biggest competitor they had in the AFC. That, to me,
- 52:52Speaker 3: is still one of the most questionable draft moves I've
- 52:54Speaker 3: seen in my time doing this. It like, honestly, it
- 52:58Speaker 3: didn't burn them as bad as it should have. And
- 53:00Speaker 3: it's burned in pretty bad, but it didn't burn them
- 53:02Speaker 3: as bad as it should have. Fair Enough, all right,
- 53:04Speaker 3: we got to hit the break here soon. But I
- 53:05Speaker 3: let's take Patty's call in a couple of emails, and
- 53:08Speaker 3: we'll take the break in a few minutes, and then
- 53:09Speaker 3: we'll do our bye week exercise. Patty, what's up?
- 53:14Speaker 5: Hey, what's going on? All right, guys, I'm gonna get
- 53:19Speaker 5: a little deep here. Just hang with me, but I
- 53:23Speaker 5: guarantee you it's gonna all make sense at the end. Now,
- 53:27Speaker 5: when I first looked at the schedule this year, I
- 53:29Speaker 5: saw three matchups that I did not like. The coaching
- 53:32Speaker 5: matchup for the One was Pete Carroll and the Raiders,
- 53:35Speaker 5: one was Mike Tomlin and the Steelers, and one was
- 53:37Speaker 5: John Harbaugh and the Ravens. Now Alex, I don't know
- 53:41Speaker 5: if you remember this but I called into the Sunday
- 53:44Speaker 5: kickoff one morning, I think it was the Bills game,
- 53:47Speaker 5: prior to the Bills game, after Drake had a pretty
- 53:51Speaker 5: good game against Carolina, and I said, how long before
- 53:54Speaker 5: us Patriots fans starts saying we're gonna win this game
- 53:58Speaker 5: because we have Drake Man as quarterback. I'm that same token,
- 54:03Speaker 5: I'm that same Noah, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna ask
- 54:07Speaker 5: this question as Patriots stands, when are we going to
- 54:11Speaker 5: start saying we're gonna win this game because we have
- 54:14Speaker 5: Drake May as our quarterback and Mike Brabel is our coach. Evan,
- 54:19Speaker 5: I love you, but I am one behind Alex. If
- 54:23Speaker 5: Sean Payton was the coach of the Bills right now,
- 54:26Speaker 5: they would have won the probably won the Super Bowl
- 54:27Speaker 5: last year. It's thirteen games into Mike Brabel's Patriots career
- 54:33Speaker 5: and he is already far and away the best coach
- 54:35Speaker 5: in the division. It's not it's not close. I'm sorry.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely I'm not a McDermott guy.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Don't get don't get my Allan if you know you're
- 54:44Speaker 3: not guy, because you're such an Allen guy and you
- 54:46Speaker 3: need a scapegoat.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Sure, and that's convenient for my argument.
- 54:51Speaker 5: All right, sure, but but Alan is awesome. He is
- 54:55Speaker 5: He's one of the best quarterbacks of this generation. I Alex, sorry,
- 54:58Speaker 5: I agree with Evan. I put him right there with Mahomes.
- 55:01Speaker 5: I put him over I maybe not Burrow, I put
- 55:04Speaker 5: him on the same level as Burrough, but a little
- 55:06Speaker 5: bit above Lamar. He's not gonna get done by himself.
- 55:10Speaker 5: You said it, Evan, this is not the same Buffalo
- 55:12Speaker 5: Bills team that was that we even played last year.
- 55:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that we struggled to.
- 55:17Speaker 5: Beat in Week eighteen. There's no doubt in my mind
- 55:22Speaker 5: after listening to your analysis how the Bills like to
- 55:25Speaker 5: run basically the same five offensive plays, that Brabel's gonna
- 55:28Speaker 5: have this team ready. He knows what's at steak, he
- 55:31Speaker 5: knows what's on the line. And I've been I've been
- 55:35Speaker 5: really close all year picking picking games, and I generally
- 55:39Speaker 5: don't do this on catch twenty two, but I am
- 55:41Speaker 5: picking the Patriots to win thirty four to twenty one'd
- 55:45Speaker 5: be great to be particularly close. I think the Bills
- 55:48Speaker 5: might come out and show a little flash at the beginning,
- 55:52Speaker 5: but honestly, I think they're just gonna stomp their asses
- 55:55Speaker 5: into the dirt to end the game, and like I said,
- 55:58Speaker 5: he knows what's on the line. I think this team
- 56:01Speaker 5: is hungry. I think this team you said that was
- 56:03Speaker 5: the more desperate team yesterday. It might be the Bills,
- 56:06Speaker 5: but I think the Patriots are the more hungrier team.
- 56:08Speaker 5: And you know what, they win it.
- 56:10Speaker 6: I'm with you.
- 56:11Speaker 5: I'm with you to Evan, I can't wait to get
- 56:13Speaker 5: the hat and T shirt myself.
- 56:14Speaker 3: What freaking baby, Thanks for the call. Twenty one would
- 56:18Speaker 3: be great. That's gonna be a quick game to write about.
- 56:20Speaker 3: I get to catch the end of Philip Rivers against
- 56:21Speaker 3: the Seahawks, nice nicely. He mentioned Rabel having the team
- 56:24Speaker 3: ready off the bye. I think I talked about the
- 56:26Speaker 3: stat last week on the show, but I'll bring it
- 56:27Speaker 3: up again. Mike Rabel career as a head coach coming
- 56:30Speaker 3: off the by six and oh five wins by multi
- 56:33Speaker 3: score margins. He gets his team's ready coming off the bye.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and his coach is there. I might disagree with
- 56:40Speaker 2: a few of them. I am not a McDermott guy.
- 56:44Speaker 2: I'm an Allen guy, but I'm not.
- 56:45Speaker 3: The same reason you don't like Tua because in your mind.
- 56:48Speaker 3: That's why Mike McDaniel did no no, I just I
- 56:51Speaker 3: McDermott to me is.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Part of the problem. Like I've used the Mark Jackson
- 56:57Speaker 2: comparison a million times with Sean McDermott. Yeah, like he
- 57:00Speaker 2: he's the coach before the coach, and they've just been
- 57:02Speaker 2: really running out of time. They've been really slow to
- 57:04Speaker 2: move on from him, Like too slow.
- 57:06Speaker 3: It's his ninth year, right.
- 57:08Speaker 2: If you're a Patriots fan, and I'm not saying you
- 57:10Speaker 2: should be worried, but I know this. We're gonna talk
- 57:12Speaker 2: about this in a second. There's a lot of like
- 57:14Speaker 2: who do you fear right now as a Patriots fan?
- 57:17Speaker 2: But the biggest fear with Buffalo to me is that
- 57:21Speaker 2: Buffalo hires the right coach, right, Like if they go
- 57:24Speaker 2: out and they hire the right head coach for Josh Allen,
- 57:28Speaker 2: like they're gonna win Super Bowl maybe, I.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Mean, they're gonna have to fix the roster at this point.
- 57:32Speaker 3: That's then when I said they should have moved on
- 57:34Speaker 3: for mcdermotag.
- 57:35Speaker 2: If they get the right guys in charge in Buffalo there,
- 57:37Speaker 2: it's not.
- 57:37Speaker 3: Just the coach. I mean it's his ninth year, right, Yeah,
- 57:41Speaker 3: is it? Time to start talking about my favorite list again.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Coaches ten plus years with the team without winning a
- 57:47Speaker 3: Super Bowl. Marv Levy, Marv Lewis, Ted Marchibroda, Jeff Fisher,
- 57:50Speaker 3: Dan Reeves, Jason Garret, Andy Reid and Philly, Dennis Green,
- 57:53Speaker 3: Jim Moore, Bud Grant. Well one year away from adding
- 57:56Speaker 3: two names to that list, Evan Sean McDermott. And who's
- 58:00Speaker 3: hired the same year as McDermott, Mike Tomlin. No, the
- 58:03Speaker 3: guy that he's won a super like twenty years ago. Well,
- 58:07Speaker 3: but he had. The point is like, it's not on
- 58:10Speaker 3: the resume, yet he keeps him up. McDermott's not usually
- 58:12Speaker 3: the reason I bring up this list. There's another guy
- 58:14Speaker 3: that I usually bring up this list for that has
- 58:16Speaker 3: oh Kyle Shanahan. Yeah, so they were hired in the
- 58:18Speaker 3: same year. Yeah, at least Kyle Shanon has been to
- 58:20Speaker 3: two Super Bowls, Marvel Leaving went to four, and mar
- 58:24Speaker 3: Levy's in the Hall of Fame. That's true for now,
- 58:27Speaker 3: that's the comp All right, we're gonna take a quick break.
- 58:30Speaker 3: But two emails. Sorry, Alex, I keep throwing you off
- 58:32Speaker 3: on that.
- 58:33Speaker 2: My bad. Uh, these are two emails about one about
- 58:36Speaker 2: me and one about you. Oh okay, because we did
- 58:38Speaker 2: start off the show a little bit spicy, so we
- 58:40Speaker 2: deserve some of this, he says. From Josh and Atlanta
- 58:44Speaker 2: Big Keyboard Warrior, Josh and Atlanta says his subject line,
- 58:48Speaker 2: Evan's hypocrisy. Evan doesn't have time for the nonsense, but
- 58:52Speaker 2: keeps bringing up his social media mentions across both podcasts.
- 58:56Speaker 3: It's a good point. Talked about this yesterday.
- 58:58Speaker 2: Yeah, because like y'all are a bunch of whiny babies,
- 59:00Speaker 2: like stop whining on social media and about sports like relaxed.
- 59:06Speaker 3: You can't whine. We can't have fun, we can't make
- 59:08Speaker 3: jokes exactly.
- 59:09Speaker 2: We don't know room, we don't care. He's on your side.
- 59:12Speaker 2: Let me finish the email. We don't care. But when
- 59:14Speaker 2: Alex talks about the QB situation of a potential playoff opponent,
- 59:17Speaker 2: Evan is incredibly dismissive. Alex, don't let Evan steal your shine.
- 59:22Speaker 2: His Drake mail love fueled ego gas ballooned to new levels.
- 59:27Speaker 3: Wow, Josh, think you I don't think liking Drake May
- 59:31Speaker 3: is anything to do with putting down Philip Rivers. It's
- 59:33Speaker 3: not like Rivers gonna come steal the m v B. Now,
- 59:35Speaker 3: is there a case for him to make comeback Player
- 59:37Speaker 3: of the Year. Maybe, but I yeah, it's it's it's
- 59:41Speaker 3: a very interesting story. It's an interesting I don't think
- 59:45Speaker 3: you talk about this.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I didn't say I don't want to talk about what
- 59:49Speaker 2: I told you is is that. I what I don't
- 59:51Speaker 2: find interesting about it is like it the meme culture
- 59:54Speaker 2: element of it, Like I don't care about.
- 59:57Speaker 3: This is so funny, such a thing. It is kind funny.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: But also it's like a forty four year old guy
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: who's been retired for five years coming back to like
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: quarterback in the NFL is a wild story. It's an
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: interesting thing to talk about. It's an interesting thing. They consider.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: So this email is bashing you because we got one
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: that bashed me. Now I got to go on that
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: bashed you. And uh, Mike takes a stray in this
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: one too. Yeah, so good Lord Alex Bart and Mike
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Kadlick just love drama. I have so much respect for
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Evan and Taylor. Kyle so compliments flowers to Taylor because
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: they have to put up with you guys.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Your guys is nonsense.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: I love the way Evan and Taylor loves the love
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: the game and don't care about the bs. Keep up
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: the great work, Evan and Way to be mature and
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: an adolescent like the other.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: It's like, I love the drama me classically. I love
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: the reality show element.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: The irony of this whole thing is that I'm the
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: reality TV guy out of the two of us. But
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: you do the reality TV with the sports. But I
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: got I don't with like, do I really do it
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: that much? I really don't think I do a little bit.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: I mean a little bit, But no, I'm interested in
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: the football side. This is the thing I talk about
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: the things that like Belichick at UNC, right, and remember,
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: oh you want the drama of Bill No, I literally
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: just wanted to see what he looked like coaching college
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: football and that was it. I didn't care about what
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: was happening off the field. Same thing with this, Like
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: I there's yeah, there's some funny jokes that are being
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: made about it. I don't is there drama in this?
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: In the Philip Rivers thing, No, a forty four year
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: old retired five years was an All Pro caliber quarterback,
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: wasn't terrible his last year in Indy wasn't what he was.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: It wasn't terrible. They went to the playoffs, Like, what
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: does this look like? I don't know how you can't
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: be fascinated by that?
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: I know, all right, let's take that break, Alex.

- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Was originally some know in the forecast for Sunday, but
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: now it's kind of maybe not.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: It's supposed to snow Saturday and it's supposed to snow Monday.
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: Is there anything we can do about that?
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: Why is it skipping Sunday?
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: You want it to?
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: Yes, you do? You do love snow football. David andrews
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: with me on that, by the way, Yeah, because he played,
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: it's different.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: It's different.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Oh so the players don't the players don't know better
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: than us.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: No, oh my god, no, I understand why he would
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: have fun playing in the snow. I had fun playing
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: in the snow. We all had fun playing in this
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: watching it's just not I don't find it fun to
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: analyze a game that was played at like the Bills
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Bengals game. I kind of almost throw that entire game
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: out because they like they're playing in a blizzard. It's
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: not the conditions aren't the same.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: I don't think the fans care. What's easier, harder for
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: you to analyze. I think people want to be entertained.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Snow football is, yeah, very entertained.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: I don't say the fans care, and I said I care.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: I want for the fans opinion, which best for the
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: fans is what's best for us covering the sport, good
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: for the goose, good for the game exactly. So if
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: there's anything we can do, that old weather machine still
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: lying around, if we can get one of those storms moved,
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: but I think it's just flurries. But like we get
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: one of those moves by like twenty four hours, that'd
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: be great.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Well, Okay, if it does snow, then the Jilted Stadium
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: field crew will have Aaron's snowblowers to try to clear
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: off the field during the game. So the snow is
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: going to continue to fall, and when it does, we
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: are ready to help you tackle it. Aaron's is proud
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: to be the official snowblower of the New England Patriots.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Visit www Dot Aarons dot com to find your errand
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: So it's interesting, I think in terms of the snow
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: angle of it, I find this to be one of
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: the things that people get wrong analyzing football the most,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: and I think maybe we're uniquely equipped to talk about
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: it because we've experienced so many snow games. People think
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: you can't throw the ball in the snow, which I
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: think could be further from.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: The so kind of like if it's windy, right then
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: it changes it. But no, sorry, can I know what
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: you're gonna say, You're.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: Right, So I think, well, I just think a lot
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: of people because I was listening to one of the
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: pregame shows on Sunday before it Bill's Bangles, and they
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: all want to take the air out of the ball.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Like, oh, you got it's the snow. You got to
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: be able to run the ball. You got to be
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: able to do No, you are so much better.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Off trying to get the ball in space right in
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: snow because it's so hard to cut that when you
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: know where you're going, versus trying to react to somebody
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: cutting on defense, you have such a huge advantage.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: So the game on site not just that well. And
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: this is depending on the snow in the surface, but
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: you also hear players talk about blocking in the run
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: game is very hard when you don't have your footing
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: in the snow is incredibly so you know, if it's
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: like flurries whatever, and it's different grass versus turf, but no,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: it is actually as long as it's not too windy,
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: it is easier to throw the ball in the snow.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Now if it's you know, one of these blizzards where
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: you're getting forty to fifty mile an hour winds. Right,
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: the snowball. Now it's now it's just hard to do
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: everything but right, So lose the ability to run before
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: you lose the ability to throw.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I remember Brady also talking about in the snow, and
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: this kind of goes to your point about footing in
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: the trenches. He was like, I was never under any
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: pressure because these pass rushers could not get off the
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: ball and because they're footing, they were like pitter pattering,
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: you know, and there was never any pressure on the quarterback.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: So if it's not windy, if it's not like a
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: driving wind or something like that, then it absolutely is
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: a throw the ball type of weather if you can again,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: you know, cut it through the wind right. And I
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: think that we hear so many analysis is, you know,
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: leading into snow games, like well they're gonna have to
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: run it forty times because it's snowing. No, no, no,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: if it's if it's windy, you got to run it right.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: Well, because I think people get mixed up because in
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: the rain you don't want to throw the ball because
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: the grip and all that. But like this, the ball
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: doesn't get as wet in the snow, if that makes sense.
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: And again it depends on the kind of snow and
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: the storm you're dealing with. But so the boy, how
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: many yards did Brady throw four in that snowstorm against
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: the Titans.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Which like three hundred in the first half, And that
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: was one where touchdown passes in the first It was
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: snowing hard.
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: That was not a windy day they threw.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: They threw a deep bombed flee flicker to Randy Moss
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: in the middle of the of the snow.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: It's twenty nine nine, I think, So I want to
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: find what the weather was that day.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: I think it was nine.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: Yeah it was. I don't know why. I always forget
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: if that's O nine or I.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: Think he threw six touchdown passes in the first half
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: if I remember correct.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Thirty nine degrees ten mile an hour wins. So it
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: was breezy but not windy. Yeah, that's like in snow
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: like that's a great day to throw the football. Brady
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: threw for three hundred and eighty yards and then Brian
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Hoyer tacked on fifty two more.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he was going for the record of
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: touchdown passes in a game at one point, and I
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: think they just decided it was more important to keep
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: them upright, and it was to go for records, individual records.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: So the little bye week exercise that we wanted to do,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: and then we'll take some more calls and emails. There's
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: a lot of talk around town about, you know, blueprints
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: and like who do you fear, and like which team
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: worries you the most and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: So in typical cashway two fashion, I thought it'd be
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: cool if we actually like reverse engineer this. Yeah, so
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: we're going to talk about how we would defend the Patriots,
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: and you attack the Patriots, and then I want to
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: talk about which teams in the AFC could press those
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: buttons the best, you know, which teams could actually execute
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: the game plan. So let's start with the Patriots offense.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: And I know there's been there's been talking. I think
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: Phil Perry was the first one that kind of had
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: this take about Drake may potentially being blueprint proof. And
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: I agree to the extent that, like he's at the
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: point now where like you can only hope to slow
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: him down, You're not going to completely stop him. I think,
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: but that doesn't that there aren't ways that he's less
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: efficient than others.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: I think that where that take might come from, I
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: didn't hear Phil's whole thing, so I apologize from stepping
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: on or whatever. But like every time this year the
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: offense as a whole has struggled with something and we
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: come in here next week, like, oh they struggle with that,
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: they come out the next week and they dominate in
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: that facet of the game, and that's credit to Drake,
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: that's credit to the rest of the office, credit to
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: the coaching staff. So it feels a little and there's
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: more things that they'll be approached with right that they're
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: going to need to take care of. So I don't
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: want to say he's blueprint proof, but to this point,
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: every time we think there's a blueprint, they come out
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: the next week and they beat whatever that scheme is
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: fair enough.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: So I think there's two ways that I look at
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: them right now and say, if I was defending the
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Patriots offense, this is what I would do. Yep, I
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: would say the first one is probably what I would
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: lean on the most, uh, and that is just drop
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: everybody in coverage. Yeah, seven eight guys in coverage drop eight,
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: you know that type of thing. I think the best
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: reps that I've seen against Drake May on third down
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: specifically were by Cleveland and Tampa and they played drop
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: eight coverage, So they dropped seven guys technically in coverage. Yeah,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: one was a spy on Drake May and then they
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: rushed three. So I think that's probably the best way
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: to do it, because I think the second that you
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: blitz him, that's a no go. I think you have
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: to spy him because of his mobility, whether it's extending
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: blazer scrambling. So I think the drop eight strategy is
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: something that is such a tiny little sample size that
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: it's too small of a sample size to have an
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: exact measurement on. He's only phased ten dropbacks of drop
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: eight all year, so it's like that's you can't really
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: base it on any numbers.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: You really can't. The other things, you really can't play
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: that way an entire game, you can't. It's really only
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: like a third and long, third and medium type of thing.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: But he has a negative EPA.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: Against drop eight, tiny tiny sample size, but he does
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: have a negative EPA and strap A, so that would
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: be the first thing that I would try if I
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: was going up against Drake May. Three man rush, one
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: man spy, seven guys in coverage, try to flood the
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: field with defenders and go that route. You know, back
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: in what week was the Browns game, week seven weeks whatever,
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: we gave whatever it was the Carson Sweessinger pick in
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: the first half. Sweeshinger on that play was actually the
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: spy and he threw it to the spy. That was
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: three man rush, spy, seven guys with man coverage, like
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: and I think that's sort of been the best blueprint
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: I've seen against Drake. The other thing that I would
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: try a little bit, and we talked about this a
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: little bit with the Bills, I would try to play
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: some man coverage against this Patriots team. I think their
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: receivers are good. I don't know if their receivers are great.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: I would try to man up on the Patriots receivers.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Drake May's efficiency just a little bit worse against man
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: than it is against zone. He's the best zone quarterback
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: in the league right now, first and EPA against zone,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: So if you play him in man, you're spying him.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: That's what I would try to do. I wouldn't blitz Nope,
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: And I wouldn't play like conventional zone because he's gonna
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: find the opening.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: I'm playing, you know, three deep I'm taking. I'm basically
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: copy and pasting most of the Josh Allen game plan. Yeah,
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: play deep, take away the deep ball, force them to
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: drive the ball eight ten to twelve plays to make
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: them be perfect. Rush plans that encourage them to use
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: the run game more than they probably want to, and
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: make them nicklin dine their way down the field. Make
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: them be perfect. That'd be my game plan. The one
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: thing I would change from how we typically talk about
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: Allen is I don't want Drake May. I want Drake
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: May stepping up in the pocket. I don't want him
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: getting out of the pocket, especially when he rolls to
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: his right. You know some quarterbacks it's flush him out
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: because it takes away the opposite side of the field.
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Drake's arm is too big for that. He can roll
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: out to his right in the whole field is still
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: at his disposal. I want him and he can. Also,
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: he's a better runner when he gets outside the pocket.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: You know, if he's going to step up in the
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: pocket and then just kind of run and get five
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: or six yards, I'll take that as a win and
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: I'll make him do that all day. So I'm with
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: you in a lot of it. I'm taking away the
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: deep ball, I'm taking away the sidelines. Force him to
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: be short accurate in the middle of the field and
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: make him do that for eight, ten, twelve plays. And
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: if he wants to run, he has to run stepping
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: up through the pocket where there's going to be a
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: spy waiting for him, rather than you know, allowing him
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: to get to the outside and now he can outrun
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: the spy or he can throw the ball because he
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: has more room. Like I'm not, I would rather allow
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: him to scramble up the middle than let him leave
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: the pocket and do whatever he's going to do outside
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: the pocket.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: So I just think that, you know, when you look
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: at some of the numbers, and then you will you
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: look at the eye test.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, with Drake May, I don't understand.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: One of the things that I just am perpexed by,
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: along with some of the blitzing that teams have done
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: against him, the Patriots are still seeing a extremely high
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: rate of single high state.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: I don't understand this, and it really does surprise me.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: And I think that the obvious the obvious thing I
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: think is that they feel like their weapons on the
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: outside aren't very good, and so they just don't have
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: a ton of fear for Kaishawn, Booty maccollins, Kyle Williams,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: those guys running the ball down, you know, beating them
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: down the field, whatever you think of those three names
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: that I just named. Though, when the quarterback is putting
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: the ball on a on a penny, you know, right,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: and he's putting the ball right on their hands fifty
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: yards down the field, these guys are still NFL receivers
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: that they're going to catch more of those passes than
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: they're not going to catch, right, So they might not
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: create a ton of separation. They might not be you know,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: prime Randy Moss running down the sideline, but when Drake
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Mays is so accurate on the deep ball, they're still
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: pros like they're still going to catch the ball when
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: it hits them in the hands more times than not.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: So the Patriots right now are still seeing a league
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: high rate. I think it's they're there one or two
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: I can't remember off the top of my head, and
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: how much single high safety they're seeing Drake may is
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: second in the league and EPA against single high He's
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: third in the league in passer rating if you want
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: to use traditional passer rating. His traditional passer rating against
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: single high safety coverage is one hundred and ten. And
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: teams keep doing it. So again, like we're kind of
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: both saying, like, at what point does a team say, Nah,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: we're putting the top on the defense. You're second in
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: the league and it is supposed to pass rate. We're
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: not allowing this him to just deep ball his way
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: down the field. We're gonna make you march. You're gonna
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: have to score in the red zone, which has been
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: a problem for them. Like, that's what I would do.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I would play Ben don't break against the Patriots. If
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: you want to simplify it and make it as simple
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: as you possible.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: I basically play the defensive Patriots have been playing this year.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Ben don't break on the other side of the ball.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: This is a very interesting sort of split between eye
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: tests and numbers that we have going on here. The
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: eye test would tell you that if you look at
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: the Patriots defense on paper, you would want to attack
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: their linebackers in safeties and coverage. You know, tight ends,
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: running backs, middle of the field, and in the beginning
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: of the season that was absolutely bearing out with the numbers.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: The numbers in the beginning of the year and all
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: three of those categories were poor. They've really leveled off,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: they've kind of steadied the ship in this regard, and
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: now the numbers are actually saying they're a very good
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: pass defense for the most part against the middle of
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: the field and against tight ends and backs. But it
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: still feels like, if you want to beat the Patriots,
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: throwing at Carlton Davis and Christian Zales and Marcus Jones
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: is not as good of an idea as throwing against
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: Robert Splain, Jack Gibbons, Christianelli's, Craig Woods and Jalen Hawkins.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: And that's some disrespect to those players. It's just obvious.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Do you want to throw at the all pro corner
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: or do you want to throw at the linebackers and
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: safeties in the middle of the field.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: So I think, because we've talked about this a little.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Bit off the air, that you still fall in that
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: category that if you were playing the Patriots, you would
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: still try to work the middle of the field, work
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: the tight ends.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Do that so yeah, I think the big thing for
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: me is I'd be pretty play action heavy. And so
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: some of this is like, Okay, wegame planning for them
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: with or without Milton Williams, because you know, if Milton
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: Williams is in there, outside runs into play action and
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: then target the tight end and then try to get
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: some speed in the slot and use that to stretch
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: the vertically. The Patriots have not been very good against
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: play action this year. They're twenty fifth in the league
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: in yards per play allowed to play action. I know
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: that's a dinosaur stat to you, but I think their
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: EPA isn't great either. If I'm right in that regard,
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: I'm not going to try to act like I understand it,
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: but hit the play action. Now, if they don't have
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Milton Williams, it's a more you know, inside gap run game,
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: but I'm still hitting the play action off that. And again,
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: I want to hit the tight end and and I
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: want to get some speed in the slot, keep the
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: ball away from those outside corners, and then if they're
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: going to play that off coverage that they've been playing,
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: you know, bring those outside receivers underneath into the middle
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: of the field and throw the ball there. Yeah, so
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: I think we're kind of on the same page.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Again for the most part, I wrote down just aggressive
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: early down passing. I still think that if you look
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: at the Patriots both eye test and numbers, Yeah, they're
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: first and second down pass defense is where they're the
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: most vulnerable. They're they're twenty fourth in the league right
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: now and early down EPA per drop back. So like
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: they don't stop a lot of teams on first and
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: second down, they're great on third down. They and they
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: that's what they do, right, They kind of stall a
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: lot of teams, like right outside the red zone, right,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: there's a lot of those types of drives that they
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: kind of get onto the other side of the fifty
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: and they'll face a third down at like they're the
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Patriots like thirty five or forty years right.
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: Around midfield and we're down. Oh. That also reminds me
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: to go back to the offense real quick, something I do. Yeah,
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: or like a point of mind of I'm defending the
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: Patriots offense, I wouldn't be like part of the reason
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: I'm sitting back. Let him get in the red zone,
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: let him get to a goal, because they've they've struggled there.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so I look at the way that you know,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: I if I was, like, you know, just talking about
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: Buffalo specifically because of this week. If I was Buffalo,
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: I throw the ball forty five times. I throw it early,
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: and I throw it often.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: See, that's where it gets weak because I don't I've
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: talked to It's funny we've come full circle because I've
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: talked about the Bills doing this against the Patriots. You
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: can't try to reinvent yourself that aggressively in the NFL,
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: because even if that's the ideal game plan, if you
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: don't have the players to execute it, and I know
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: people are, that's not right. But in who's he throwing to? Yeah,
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: you said before, like that's been a big part of
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: the reason I would be nervous if I'm the Bills
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: throwing even with that quarterback. That's how bad I think
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: their weapons are. And by the way their lines all
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: banged up, it's not forget to state their line is
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: in Yeah, I would not like in theory, that's the
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: way to play the Patriots. I think you're right. Big picture,
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: do the Bills, even with Josh Allen, do the Bills
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: have the talent necessary to pull off that game plan,
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: so I don't know that they do.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: We'll get to it in a second, because then I
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: want to talk about teams that can hit these buttons.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: So twenty fourth in early down pass EPA, they're twenty
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: ninth and explosive play rate allowed on first and second down,
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: So I just I think a lot of teams and
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: they also played a ton of zone on first and
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: second down. There's seventy five percent zone on first and
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: second down. So we've taken many of calls and emails
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: about this, Alex, about people frustrated with all the soft
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: zone coverage, you know, off coverage, soft zone. If you're
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: willing to take those profits against the Patriots, those opportunities
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: are there.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: You don't want to get into.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Third down against them. You don't want to allow them
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: to play, you know, put their man coverage on the
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: field like that. That's really what you don't want to
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: get into with the Patriots defense. But I do think
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: their early down pass defense can still be had and
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: maybe some of that goes to the tight end and
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: the play action and all that good stuff that you
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: were talking about as well. So that is what we
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: would do. That's the self scout right of the pots.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: Now the question is is which teams could execute that
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: the best in the AFC playoff picture. And I think
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: we're going to disagree on our order here pretty significantly,
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: So I'm looking forward to this. I will put this
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: one caveat on my order. If Daniel Jones was healthy
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: for the Indianapolis Colts, I'd probably have them a lot
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: higher on the list.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: So again, you're you're sleeping on, Philip Rivers.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: If Daniel Jones was healthy for the Colts. A team
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: that could take away explosive plays on offense, you know,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: for the Patriots offense to them on defense, A team
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: that could attack early down, you know, pass defense that
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: could throw to the tight end that you know, had
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: a lot of play action on first and second down
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: like that. You're kind of that's the Colts like that.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: That's that's what they are. They don't have Daniel Jones,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: so they don't have their quarterback. They're going with forty
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: four year old grandpa over there. Your favorite story good
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: of all time, Philip Rivers, Where which team fears you
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: the most? Which team do you worry about the most
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: that can hit those buttons.
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: In terms of attacking the Patriots defense in terms of
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: attacking the Patriots like what they're I mean, I definitely
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: think there's teams that can pull off that defensive I
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: think there's more team the defensive game plan we laid out,
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: and granted it's a lot less complex, yeah, but I
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: think there's more teams that can execute that defensive game
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: plan that can execute the offensive, you know, in terms
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: of the teams that can can hit some of that
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: play action stuff, that have the tight ends, that have
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: the slot receiver talent, like one of them. One of
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: the teams I go to is the Chargers. They play
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: that way, they like to play that way, but I all,
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: they're so banged up and let them come here in
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: the winter and deal with the cold and like so that.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: You know, I thought about the Charges because I have
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: a lot of respect for Herbert.
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: But they're just not that good. I just don't see
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: it like they kind of can do the it's it's
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: Jimmy's and Joe's not Exits and O's. I think they
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: have the talent that dictates that game plan, but I
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: don't think they're going to run it at that high
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: of a level that it's going to be an issue
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: you know again, the Steelers kind of want to play
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: that way.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: But Aaron Rodgers is I know, we played really well
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: last week. I this is the problem that I was having, Like,
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: the teams with the talent on offense don't play the
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: way that you need to play to beat the Patriots defense.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: The teams that stylistically play that way don't have the talent.
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: The Steelers are maybe in the middle. Look credit to Rogers.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: Last week was the best I've seen him, look since
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: probably Green Bay.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: He was all right.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: I thought he's pretty good in that game, But like,
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: can he still do that every week? Or was that
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: just one last game from Rogers?
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: Is just so slow And if I'm facing the Patriots,
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: like speed and explosiveness is what I'd want, And it just.
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: So I just I And I know they beat the
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: Patriots already this year, but they scored twenty one points
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: in a game where the Patriots turned the ball over
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: five times. Right, So yeah, maybe the Ravens, but are
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: they gonna make it? Yeah, this is exactly what seould
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: happened when I was trying to make my list. Yeah,
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: the Colts don't have their quarterback, right, the Chargers don't
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: have their tackles right, which I think is huge. And
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: it's also just we know what happens when the Chargers
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: come here in January, and know what that looks like
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: and Herbert has one hand yep, the Steelers are a corpse.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I'm sorry that was mean, but it's the truth.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: I think they played well last week. I don't think
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: it's sustainable, but I do think they played well last
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: They played better, but I think they played pretty. That
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: was as good as I seen them look all.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: Year that the tape for Rogers was fine. It wasn't
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: anything great. He made one really good play to DK Metcalf,
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: extended to the play and the hit Metcalf coming across
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: the field. He hit him on a bomb, their first
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: bomb in like two months. And well, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: I don't think it's sustainable, but credit where credits?
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: Do I think that?
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: You know how I feel about Tomlin. I'm just not
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: so Steelers in theory could do it. I just think
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: the Steelers are kind of bad. Frankly, the Coles don't
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: have their quarterback. The Chargers are all sorts of banged
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: up all across their roster. I agree with you that Baltimore.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: I faced snuck in, would be would be frisky in
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: this regard, I still have the Bills Number one. I
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: still have the Bills. I think the Bills for two reasons.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: You know, we talked a lot about slot receivers tight ends.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: They might not have great outside receiver talent, but shak
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: here's their best guy.
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: Right, But you don't win against the Patriots with outside
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: receiver talent unless you're the Falcons and Drake London just
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: goes nutty.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: That shak here's your best guy. Yeah, Kincaid and Knox
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: can play. They can do the early down, throw it,
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: play action, put the game in Josh Allen's hands just fine,
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: and they can play two deep safeties over the top
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: of it of an offense. Let's see what it looks
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: like on Sunday. Yeah, but in theory, I still look
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: at Buffalo as the most complete team other than the
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: Patriots right now.
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: So there's also that element of having to play a
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: team three times. Yeah, that scares me, Like that's especially
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: if the Patriots win this week. Like, beating a team
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: three times is not easy to do. If we're going
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: to talk about most well rounded, it's probably Buffalo. But
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: if Houston's defense alone, so Houston was number two, might
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: be more worrying to me than the entire package. And
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: then there's Denver, like Denver's on that level if they
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: have to go to Denver. If Denver's coming here, I'm
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: not as worried. So Houston's don't have to do that
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: whole thing. No, Houston's number two on my list. So
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: I had Buffalo and I had Houston. And by the way,
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: these are the six and seven seeds. Now this is
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: probably they'd play if they ended up with the two seeds.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: So the reason why I had Houston slightly lower than
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: Buffalo's obvious their offense and their quarterback.
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: But I do think that Stroud's good.
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: I don't know if I think he's as good as
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Paul Parillo, but I think he's good. But you know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: I think he's he's good enough. Their offense has had
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: a lot of struggles this year. They've had some really
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: ugly stretches. Offensively, Nick Cayley is the first time play
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: collar just kind of trying to figure it out, and
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: it's not always been pretty. But they have Stroud Wood
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: he Mark is giving them a little something in their
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: run game. Nico Collins is a beast, the Schultz is
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: a solid, decent enough kind of hunter, Henry tight end
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: for them, and then of course that defense is just phenomenal.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: So is there a better individual unit in the AFC
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: than the Houston Texans defense. I think I'd take them
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: over with the Broncos at this point.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: They're very good. They're very good, and they play a
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: lot of like man or match coverage in the back
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: end where it's not technically man, it's more like quarters,
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: but it becomes man. And they're very, very good.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: They're a better unit than the Texans defense. I don't
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: think there's any.
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: The Bills in the Patriots offenses are really good.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: I don't I don't think either one's better in a
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: Texans maybe not, maybe not. The Texans defense is great.
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: I just don't know if I if I fully am
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: there with the Texans offense where well.
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: That's why I say it is they're a better unit, right,
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: so they out of it.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: They beat the Bills twenty three to nineteen. Yeah, a
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: really bad game for Buffalo offensively, eight sacks, turnovers, the
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: whole thing. If the Patriots find themselves in a twenty
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: three to nineteen game. I kind of like, I'm cool
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: with playing.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: They've won that game all year, like I you know,
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: like against lesser teams. But yeah, but they've won that.
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: They've won like a pseudo rite fight all year. They
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: can beat that. They can beat the Texans. Yeah, it's
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: not gonna be easy. There's easier opponents there, but they
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: can beat the Texans. So Buffalo one, Houston two, and
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: then regugging ly, the Denver Broncos number three. I mean,
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: I think there's a clear gap between those three. I mean, look,
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: Baltimore is still kind of lurking. The Chiefs are still
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: kind of lurking. Lamar doesn't look right. The Chiefs don't
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: look right to me. It's Buffalo number one, A, Houston
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: and at Denver would be one B. Yeah, and then
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: you get like i'd probably say Denver here. Then Baltimore
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: would be the next tier, and then it's everybody else, like,
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: bring me the Jags, bring me the Chargers, bring me Pittsburgh.
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: There's no doubt that Denver's defense could execute the plan
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: that we said, No doubt, no they they whatsoever.
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: Yeah, they'd be great.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: But if we're right, and the way to beat the
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: Patriots is to attack their pass defense, especially on person
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: second down.
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: That is a lot of bonis all take CJ. Stroud
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: and Nico Collins over Bonick and Courtland sut so, just to.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: Buy the numbers in terms of early down pass efficiency,
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Buffalo's third in the league, Houston's twelfth, so good but
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: not great, fine, Denver's twentieth, so like, just looking at it.
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: This is why I've kept saying, and this is why
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: I've been consistent on this. What worries me the most.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: And I know this is kind of like, well, duh,
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: it's the quarterbacks. It's the quarterbacks. Like all these I
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: don't want to face in the playoffs. If I had
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: to say who I am afraid of? I don't want
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: to face the great quarterbacks, Like if you give me
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: a game against Bonnicks, or you give me a game
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: against Trevor Lawrence, or you give me a game against
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Grandpa over there in Indianapolis.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: So let's do let's say, let's let's do the exercise
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: real quick. There's eight teams for five hundred in the
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: AFC right now, Yes, rank the quarterbacks. I'm to do
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: first or worst or worst? First? Are we counting the
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: Patriots including the Patriots ranked the quarterbacks.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: People aren't gonna like this.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: You're gonna put Josh Allen first, aren't you?
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: Josh Allen?
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: I guess he's been there before. There, you know what
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: I'm saying. I'm so well fraudulently, but I'm so big
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: on postseason experience, mattering. I I have to be consistent.
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: There is definitely a very good chance that Drake May.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: I will change my mind if Drake May wins on
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Sunday and wins in the playoffs. Okay, he just hasn't
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: done it yet. No, that's it's it'sknown playing worse than
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: Josh Allen. He just has not done it.
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: I go to that Argumental Steve, you can break these
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: into tears too if you want, so, Allan Yep May. Yeah.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Herbert Herbert, same tier. That's tough, all right, we won't
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: do tears. Herbert Herbert. Yeah, he's so compromised. But Lamar,
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: we're only doing teams over five hundred for the rat
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: so they're not counting. Yeah, okay, well we'll do But okay,
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: put Lamar in there with like an asterisk. Yeah. Lamar
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: and mahomes not a part of this. So Alan May,
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: Herbert yeah, I probably go Stroud Stroud, Okay, next I'm
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: with you.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: Then it gets tough because all these other guys kind
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: of me.
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: I mean, if you're gonna way experience, the next guy
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: Rogers has to be Rogers.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he's just not been good. He's just he's throwing
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: a lead balloon out there.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: Well, so you're down to Rogers, Knicks and Lawrence and
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: Rivers slash Rod.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: I would say, oh man, you.
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: Want to put Lawrence ahead of Rod? Like, you're not
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: gonna put Nicks ahead of Rogers. I know you.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: This is tough.
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: This is this is not we're not picking from any
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: any grace. While we're doing the exercise, I thought this
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: might be fun.
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: I would say this year, out of that group, bo
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: Nix has probably been the best, better than Rogers. Yes,
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: just to be objective, nothing but objective. I'm fair, all right,
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: I would say bo Knicks this season has been better. Well, yeah,
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: we're talking about this is an all time ranking. We're
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: talking about this year going into the playoffs, Rogers, Lawrence,
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: Rogers ahead of Lawrence, and then Colts. So you have
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: Alan May, Herbert Stroud, Ye drop off.
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: I think we can say there's a drop off there,
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: and you have Lamar in that top tier if he
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: makes it most too, Nicks, Rogers, Lawrence, and then the Colts,
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: I might move Lawrence up. I think he's trending in
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: the right direction right now.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: They've taken less off of his plate, not to do
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: that whole thing, but they're running the ball a lot
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: better and a lot more, and it's kind of leveled
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: the plane a little bit for him. Whenever he puts
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: Whenever you have to put the ball in Trevor Lawrence's
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: hands at a high volume, he becomes a turnover mission.
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: I think that's just a ton like. I think him
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: and Knicks in some ways are similar in that regard.
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: I think there's I relistically obviously maybe like is starting
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: to figure it out, yeah, and just starting to catch
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: my eye a little bit. But I just have I
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: do have.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: Some faith in Peyton in terms of like managing yeping
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Nicks on.
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: The Rogers to me's the wild card, do you get
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: it's my last run, I'm gonna throw it back whatever.
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: Although he's never been good in the playoffs to begin with,
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: he looks he just looks like a classic. He plays
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: the exact same way he always has yeah, but his skills.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Are like at like sixty five percent. If we get capacity.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: Rogers Rivers in the playoffs the Grandpa Bowl, I I
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: would go crazy, feel pretty confident. I know they lost
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: to them earlier on in the season. I'd feel pretty
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: confident that Patriots would blow out the Steelers if they
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: played the Steelers. I think it'd be comfortable. You don't
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: see how many blowouts in the playoffs I think would
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: be comfortable.
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: I'm not talking about like a forty point blow I'm
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: talking about this was game was never really in doubt.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: I think the Patriots would handle so. Evan's Evan. His
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: current rankings of quarterbacks over five hundred in the AFC,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: so very specific. Lamar and Mahomes are not a part
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: of this or to I guess I should say, because
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: they're technically in the mind. I got to be honest
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: with Roh and this is gonna be hot.
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: Takey. I don't know where I would put Mahomes right
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: now on this list. I don't like, he's definitely not
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: over mayor Allen, Like would you put him over Herbert?
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: I mean maybe maybe just because Herbert's got like one hand,
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: do you put him over Stroud.
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, yeah, third or fourth, But.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: Like that's for a guy that's won three Super Bowl
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: You're right, But like I I'm not. I don't totally
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: blame Mahomes for what's happening in Kansas City because the
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: ross around him is eroded. It's very uh oh nine
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: to nineteen Brady, right, like whichever one of those you
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: want to pick. Yeah, it's obviously in the point of
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: his career. It's more like O nine. But it reminds
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: me more of the end of the run for the Patriots,
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: where you know, Kelsey and Gronk are starting to you know,
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: both kind of run out of steam. You know, you
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: have to transition away from like the Cooks era, right
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: or like eras one year the Cooks you know, I
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: was thinking Tyreek Kill era, you know, Tyreek Kill era,
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: where like the Patriots had like Brandon Cooks for a year,
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: they had some you know, outside receiver talent here and there.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: Uh you know, Moss obviously going back a little bit further,
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: But I don't think that Mahomes is like absolved of
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: what's going on. He doesn't really like he's just hasn't
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: been as good. Like I don't have to get too
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: technical about it. He just hasn't been as good.
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: So you know what, maybe we uh maybe we make
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: this a weekly thing between now in the playoffs and
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: years see what happens. Well, just ranking the the QB playoffs. Yeah,
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: and uh more to you know, the the Dolphins, Chiefs
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: and Ravens could all be five hundred next week. So well,
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: I'd be interested to see what the quarterbacks become relevant
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: if people want to, you know, at tweet at us.
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: But Evan's rankings again, Evans quarterback rankings among teams that
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: are over five or five hundred or over in the AFC.
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: Josh Allen, Drake, May, Justin, Herbert C. J. Stroud, Bo Nicks,
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers, Trevor Lawrence, and the Colts are last whatever
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: that thing is, Riley Leonard, Philip Rivers.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: The You know, I did want to touch a little
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: bit on some of these other games, but I know
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: people have been waiting on hold as well.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: The Chargers.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: I watched a lot of that Chargers the game, basically
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: watch the whole game, the Chargers Eagles game, yep, I
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: just every time, and I know I know they're decimated,
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: I know they're they're missing Joel and Rashaan Slater, which is,
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: you know huge, Herbert's got one hand and you know
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: has a broken hand, and then he's like all his
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: throwing arms like all blood eat or in the game
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: like he's just fallen apart because he's under pressure on
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: like sixty five percent of his dropbacks because they have
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: no offensive line. So I don't know if that is
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: going to withstand the test of time because of how
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: much he's getting just beaten and battered behind that offensive line.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: Like do they have four more regular season games and
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: a postseason running them if you're the Chargers.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: But what I'm getting at just big picture, they still
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: play Houston. What I'm getting at big picture with the Chargers,
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: I think Jim Harbaugh has.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: Done exactly what you would expect and experienced coach to do,
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: which is like they are a relevant, competent football team.
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: But has Jim Harbaugh made them like a wagon? Like No,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: they're not like a real Super Bowl contend No. And
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: I think one of the things that and again I
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: maybe it was this might be more on your side
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: the street. Maybe it was. It was that type of
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: game to kick all the field goals right, like there
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: was a defensive struggle. He took the points, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: But I'm just talking in general. I just don't think
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: that they're a very aggressive football team. And I just
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: don't think that you win in the playoffs, especially when
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: you're undermanned if you aren't. And I'm not just talking
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: about fork down, I'm talking just in general, right like,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: just if you don't or if you're not kind of
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: a pedal to the metal team. He's a very conservative like, let's,
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: you know, just try to back our way into victories.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: And maybe that's just where they're at with the Chargers,
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: like in terms of their roster and all that, you know,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: their injuries and all that kind of stuff. But you know,
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: that's what I see. You know, I just don't see
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: a great team right now. What do you think of
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: the Jaguars, You're like, are you a believer in the
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: jack I'm.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: Kind of with you, Like they're they're a solid football team.
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: I don't know that there are anything more than that.
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: They're not bad, but I don't look at them as
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: like you said, they're not a juggernaut. They're not a
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: team that's going to come in and blow doors. Like
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: they're fine They've had some very good turnover.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: Look like they're turned like they have these games like
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: this game against the Colts without Daniel Jones, they turn
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: it all over three times, you know, Indianapolis did, and
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: that really is what extended the lead. They've run the
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: ball a little bit, yeah, and that that's definitely helping
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: them balance out their offense. It's a it's an impressive turnaround.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: You know, Liam Coenes had a really good first season.
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: If they if Ben Johnson and Mike Rable didn't have
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: his two teams, their two teams winning the division, you know,
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: like it would be I don't think the Bears are
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: winning their divisi anymore now that they lost the Packers.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: I don't know where that's at, but they you know,
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: Liam Cole would be getting more shine if those two
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: guys weren't where they were at. A couple of other
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: things on this slate, Hey, good for the Denver broncos Man.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: You finally actually blew out a bad team.
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: Good for you. I mean you still only won by
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: one score. Yeah, it was the one score game, but
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: it was a backdoor. Those one score game was a
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: back door cover.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: One of the smelliest as Joe Murray likes to say,
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: back door covers I've ever seen, but it was you
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: dominated that game against the Raiders, So good for you.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: Good, good for you, Denver.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: You finally dominated a bad team. Where are you at
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: with the Chiefs?
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: The Chiefs are dead, I mean this year they are
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: you know, they they sell mahomes and he's not retiring
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: after this year, I don't think. But they're They need
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: a full reset. They need a full reset around them.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: And you know, this is why we said when everybody
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: want to compare him to Brady, like, all right, you
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: had a nice little, what five seven year run, which
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: is impressive in the NFL. You're not really supposed to
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: dominate for more than three or four at a time.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: They did more than that.
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: It's not twenty they had a dynasty. It was just
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: they only had one half of the dynasty.
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: Well, they had one dynasty, not two.
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: Right, the Patriots have had two dynasties connected as one.
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: Brady never missed playoffs on his prime and he never
- 1:41:18Speaker 3: finished I think his last year in Tampa they were
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: eight and nine. So one year at the very end
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: in his forties he finished under five hundred. The other
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: thing that's going to happen that. I'm surprised more people
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: aren't having this conversation. Maybe people more intimate with the
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: Chiefs understand why like that, it's not time to have
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: this conversation. If you want to compare the two and say, Okay,
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: the Chiefs are gonna well, you can't punish the Chiefs
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: too much because the Patriots had a couple down years
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: in the middle or down years never looked like this,
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: but relatively down years in the middle where they reset.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: The one thing the Patriots never had to do was
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: reset the coach. And how much longer is Andy Reid
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: going to do this?
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: I keep bringing this up, and I think I said
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: he was close to seventy. He's sixty seven. I said
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: that yesterday. Now I would still call sixties seven turning
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: sixty eight.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: Close to seventy's old.
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: But he's sixty seven, close to sixty eight, and he's it.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: Just when you watch the Chiefs, I know a lot
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: of it's situationally, like they used to be so good
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: at those big moments and they're not making those plays
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: this year. But schematically offensively, they've gotten a little bit stale.
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: And some of that, to me, is that not only
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: is it Andy Reid this whole time, but they also
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: just brought Matt and aggy back a couple of years
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: ago and hit him the offensive coordinator. So I think
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: that that offense needs some livening up. And when he
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: came from Philly to Kansas City, he hired Brad Childress.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: Remember Brad Childress. He hired Brad Childrens as like, I
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: want to say that Brad Childress was like an air
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: raid coordinator for Kansas City. Like basically what bad Brad
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: Childress did is he took Andy Reid's West Coast offense
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: and he merged it with the air raid.
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: His title was spread Game Analysts.
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: Spread Game Analyst, I do it was something like that.
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: That was actually before Mahomes even got there.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: Yeah, this was the Alex Smith into Mahomes. So they
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: took the old school, traditional West Coast offense that Andy
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: Reid has always run and they merged it with like
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: the new concepts in college, you know, spread RBO air
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: raid concepts that are in college. And that led to
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: some really good years with Alex Smith and then it
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: led to some great years with Patrick Mahomes. So what's
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: if Andy Reid is going to keep doing this? Does
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: he one have like the give a shit meter to
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: actually go out and do this? But two, what is
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: like the next iteration for Kansas?
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: Also, just like whether it's this year or not, this
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: is another one of He's people are gonna stay doing
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: the drama again. But I mean this from a pure
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: football standpoint. I'm not trying to play succession here. Who, Like,
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: do you who do they hire to replace him? Is
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: it Steve Spagnolo?
- 1:43:57Speaker 7: No?
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: Are they going to get an offensive mine? But like,
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: you've had this success, do you want to bring in
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: somebody who's been there and knows how it works? Can
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: you hire from the outside? Usually a quarterback like Patrick Malmes?
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: I guess Peyton Manny went through a couple of head coaches,
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: but like, yeah, those jobs aren't usually open. When you
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: have a quarterback like that, it.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: Would be the number one job in the league.
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: That will but you look at the rate it probably
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: won't be. But you look at the rest of the roster,
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: there's gonna be work to do, so I don't think
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: there's as much work to do Defensively, I think they
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: still some of those guys getting old.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Well, Chris Jones getting old, But I still think that
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: you have players in the secondary. Try McDuffie is still
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: in his prime. Like, I still think you can build
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: with that defense. Offensively, I agree, their offensive line has
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: been in shambles for the last couple of years, going
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: back to you know, some of the Super Bowls and
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I just think who replaces Andy Reid in Kansas
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: City's a fascinating and again this.
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: Year it's a double edged thing, right, It's like, does
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: Andy Reid have the gas in the tank to essentially rebuild?
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: I wasn't even considering in that regard, but yeah.
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: You know, does he have the does he have the
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: gas in the tank to essentially do a mini rebuild
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: like an O nine Patriots rebuild? Or do they have
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: a succession plan or do they have another head coach
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: in mind? Reads not up for that that they can
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: turn this thing.
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: That's what I'm curious, Like, is there a succession plan
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: in place? Are they going to do like a full
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: coaching search they you know, is there going to be
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: a push for Mahomes to hire internally? Maybe Mahomes want
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: Matt and Aggy, Maybe they want but like we've seen
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: what Matt Naggie is his head coach now didn't Patrick Mahomes,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: but we've seen what Matt Naggie is as a head coach,
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: and like it's going to be interesting.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: So the last team I wanted to talk a little
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: bit about because they play them next week is the
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: Baltimore Ravens, and we'll we'll talk a lot more about
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: the Ravens next week. But this is the one thing
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: that I kind of wrote down here, like, are we
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: sure that at this at his current state with his health, Like,
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: is this version of the Lamar like really that? Like
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: I think Lamar right now has been very, very pedestrian.
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt that
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: when the lights get bright, and maybe he's too late
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: now they're six and seven, but he's maybe earned a
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: benefit of the doubt that when the lights get bright
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: he can flip the switch and be that guy. Sure,
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: but yeah, the way he's played since he came back,
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: like it looks like he's still hurt. He doesn't look right.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the biggest thing with him in terms
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: of how he looks, he just doesn't pull away from
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: the pursuit of the defender anymore, like because he doesn't
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: have is he's compromised.
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: Is an ankle injury, right y ain gole knee like
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: he's just he's so it's again, his sack rate is
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: like doubled. Like when you watch him, I try to
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: extend plays, he's just not getting He's not pulling away from.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: The defense anymore. You know, the last play of the
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: game last week, essentially like alex Heighsmith just sacks him
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: in the pocket when it's one of it's like a
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: hail Mary kind of like situation. But they actually were
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: at i think the Pittsburgh like thirty or thirty five,
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: so what it was they a hell Mary, But it
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: wasn't like one of those like on the other side
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: of the fifty that really they were going to be
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: able to get the ball in the end zone.
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: And he just takes a sack like you would never see that.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: He would spin out of it, scramble out of it,
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: extend the play and at least get a pass off.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: And now you're just not seeing him do that anymore.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: So I'm really interested to see what kind of Ravens
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: team the Patriots get next week, because they just flex
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: this Ravens team into primetime. It might say more about
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: the Patriots and the Ravens. But the Ravens are still
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: mathematically alive, but there's a very good chance of that
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: Ravens team is six and eight and is like not
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: really mathematically alive like.
- 1:47:37Speaker 3: It is, but like is hanging on by a thread.
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: And because they play the Bengals this coming up week
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: and they just lost to the Bengals on Thanksgiving. So
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: I just I don't know where the Ravens are at
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: right now. I also don't know what the Steeler but
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: to make of the Steelers either, I.
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: Again, I was impressed by what they did against the Ravens,
- 1:47:55Speaker 3: But the question is is that them turning a corner?
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: Was it just like one random great punch. I think
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: it might have been that.
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: All Right, you guys got to be quick, but we'll
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: take these calls. Sean is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 1:48:07Speaker 9: I got to play a bit of a nostra domesare.
- 1:48:09Speaker 9: I see the Patriots winning out the rest of the season,
- 1:48:13Speaker 9: having the best record in the NFL and the number
- 1:48:15Speaker 9: one seed, and they're going to beat Jacksonville and then Houston,
- 1:48:19Speaker 9: which will be the toughest game for them with that
- 1:48:22Speaker 9: great defense, but they'll they'll prevail. Also, if when the
- 1:48:27Speaker 9: Bills drop eight into coverage on Sunday, Henderson's going to
- 1:48:32Speaker 9: take a screen in for a touchdown. Now I have
- 1:48:34Speaker 9: an idea also about I don't let me know what
- 1:48:37Speaker 9: you think about this, to try and fix the goal
- 1:48:40Speaker 9: line offense. Now, you bring in the jumbo package on
- 1:48:44Speaker 9: first down, try and ram up the middle. If that
- 1:48:46Speaker 9: doesn't work, you keep the same personnel and then you
- 1:48:48Speaker 9: do a play action pass role option. Right, may will
- 1:48:52Speaker 9: run it in if you can. Otherwise it's going to
- 1:48:54Speaker 9: pass to Henry for a touchdown.
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 1:48:55Speaker 9: All right, I'll let you go on out.
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: Thanks, Sean.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: Yeah, they run like one or I think it's one
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: pass play with Kiris Tonga on the field. Yeah, you
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: know that's obviously there as an option. You know, he
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: hasn't been healthy, so they I think they probably would
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: have done it earlier.
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: Maybe I don't know if they do.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: It against the Giants and why there's no reason to
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: use that against the Giants. But I'm not necessarily talking
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: about throwing it to Tonga. I'm just saying like that's
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: out on the table right.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: The other thing, and what was the other thing that
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: he said?
- 1:49:22Speaker 3: I don't remember. I had a point, but I forgot
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: Derek is in South Carolina.
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: What's up, Derek?
- 1:49:29Speaker 6: Hey all, real quick, So I actually remember that Patriots
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: standing against the Titans and two thousand nine because I
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: had Brady and Moss on my fantasy team.
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: Oh there you go.
- 1:49:39Speaker 6: That would be And you all talk still about Jill
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: Brady and like the Bill is very predictable, like a
- 1:49:45Speaker 6: sixth place set when he came from LSU to Carolina
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: with Matt Rule. That was a knock on him at
- 1:49:52Speaker 6: the Panthers that the offense was so predictable in certain situations.
- 1:49:56Speaker 6: So the question I have for y all is, real quick,
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: if you're the Bill offensive defensive coordinator on this, are
- 1:50:03Speaker 6: you going to use like the Patriots missing Williams and
- 1:50:06Speaker 6: maybe missing Tanga as an option for perfect play action?
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: You run the run of play action, dive linebackers come
- 1:50:13Speaker 6: up and all of a sudden, you dropped it right
- 1:50:15Speaker 6: over them, and I appreciate it. Thanks.
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's exactly what the Bills are going
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: to try to do. That is what the Bills do.
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: That's their moo first play of the game last week
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: against the Bengals, play action crosser adult knocks for a
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: huge play So that's going to be what they try
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: to do. If I was the Patriots, like I was
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: saying earlier, though, uh, they're you got a key on
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: the fact that they don't marry. In my opinion, they
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: don't marry their their runs with their play actions particularly well.
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: So we used to talk about this all the time
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: with like the Patricia Van Pelt offenses, where it was
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: like they're running gap play action patterns routes, but they
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: were running it with zone blocking or vice versa. I
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: feel like the Bills are kind of similar, yeah, and
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: that they run a lot of gap play action, but
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: they run the ball with a lot of zone So
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: it's like this.
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: Is what remembered like some people were afraid of the
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: Patriots doing this at the beginning of the year.
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So if you can, if you can kind
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: of understand that, I think that you have a chance
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: to stop it and be pretty good. But yeah, it's
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: an interesting point about Joe Brady. I know that he's
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: come under some fire in Buffalo. Not everybody is a
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: big Joe Brady fan right now in Buffalo.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: So but then there's also people who want him to
- 1:51:29Speaker 3: be the next head coach if they fire MC.
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you're right, all right, we'll be back next week.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: We'll talk about this Rave, the Ravens game, we will,
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: and the Bills game hopefully with some hats and some
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: T shirts and division title in hands.
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: So we'll see about Sunday.
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: But we'll talk about this Bills game, the Ravens and
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: all of it again next week, same time, same place
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: here on Catch twenty two and then Patriots Unfiltered is
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: up in nine minutes, so you'll see those guys and
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: myself for a little bit at noon, and Alex will
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: be back. I'll Catch twenty two next week. Thanks guys,
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: thank you so much for watching. We'll see you guys
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: next week and hopefully the Patriots win the division on Sunday.
