- 0:47Speaker 2: One line at Choyerdner dot Com led the conversation begin
- 0:52Speaker 2: on Let's talk.
- 0:54Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen today, I have to say that,
- 0:59Speaker 3: and I hate to give credit, but said there is
- 1:02Speaker 3: credit due. I have at least the O D and
- 1:06Speaker 3: Halli Lewis, my normal co host building and I have
- 1:10Speaker 3: I think, I think a friend of mine that I
- 1:15Speaker 3: used to play against a couple of times a year,
- 1:18Speaker 3: by the name Sterling.
- 1:26Speaker 4: I'm not done. I'm not done. I'm not done yet
- 1:31Speaker 4: that it is not see, we can't even get the
- 1:33Speaker 4: show start.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Okay, So he just recently, just the other day, he
- 1:42Speaker 3: was he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and
- 1:46Speaker 3: I had the privilege to to be there, me and
- 1:50Speaker 3: my son, we were able to be there by his invite.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And uh, he actually has his gold jackets so that
- 1:58Speaker 3: we could actually see it, touch it and only imagine
- 2:01Speaker 3: what it's like. And and he is putting it on now.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Everybody knows that he's got it on. So I said
- 2:17Speaker 4: that earlier.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Try so for him to be a gentleman and let
- 2:21Speaker 5: me wear the jock.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'm chilled.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I'm going to because I don't want to start with
- 2:26Speaker 3: the first question because I already know.
- 2:28Speaker 4: So I'm gonna let Lisa or Hollis Lisa.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I'm going to start with Lisa that she's a Packer
- 2:33Speaker 3: fan unfortunately, and she has the cheese head.
- 2:38Speaker 4: She brought a cheese head.
- 2:39Speaker 5: In cheese head because I was so excited to have
- 2:41Speaker 5: Sterling on this show. Yes, well, okay, so I get
- 2:44Speaker 5: the first question.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Their question.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Well, first of all, Sterling, thank you so much for
- 2:48Speaker 5: being on our podcast. Carl tried to pull this you know,
- 2:52Speaker 5: surprise birthday party stuff on Hollis and I said, well,
- 2:55Speaker 5: I suggested, we'd already talked about Sterling having like a
- 2:59Speaker 5: tribute type of podcast tonight in honor of you being inducted,
- 3:02Speaker 5: you know, into the profit by Hall of Fame. And
- 3:07Speaker 5: so I said, well, maybe he could call in again,
- 3:09Speaker 5: you know, and he left us hanging.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And then this.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Morning I asked Hollis and said, did you know he
- 3:14Speaker 5: sent us this text like, well, actually he's going to
- 3:16Speaker 5: be in the studio And I was like what, So
- 3:19Speaker 5: I was like it was so exciting. But but anyway,
- 3:22Speaker 5: so I'm going to go back, Sterling to the speech
- 3:25Speaker 5: that you gave at the Pro Football Hof ceremony, and
- 3:30Speaker 5: part of it when you were speaking about you and
- 3:33Speaker 5: Shannon and your early life experiences in rural South Georgia.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And one of the things that intrigued me that you
- 3:40Speaker 5: stated was at a young age that you and Shannon
- 3:43Speaker 5: really didn't have a whole lot of male figures or
- 3:46Speaker 5: role models in your life. You were you were basically
- 3:48Speaker 5: raised by these strong women, you know, part of your
- 3:52Speaker 5: that that are in your family. How did how did
- 3:54Speaker 5: that guide your career in football and in your outlook
- 3:57Speaker 5: on life in general.
- 3:59Speaker 7: Well, the biggest thing is we had tremendous role models
- 4:04Speaker 7: that were farmers. We had tremendous role models that were
- 4:07Speaker 7: deacon at our church. But if you were an athlete,
- 4:12Speaker 7: you're trying to look and find someone that you know
- 4:17Speaker 7: you might want to want to try to be like.
- 4:18Speaker 7: But you know, growing up on the farm, we never
- 4:21Speaker 7: had that. And so for me wanting to be a
- 4:24Speaker 7: football player of my entire life, I wanted to be
- 4:29Speaker 7: sure because I wanted him to look at me as
- 4:34Speaker 7: that I didn't know what he was going to be
- 4:36Speaker 7: or what he was going to do, but I do
- 4:38Speaker 7: know I wanted to be his everything. And so that
- 4:43Speaker 7: was what part of my motivation was for my speech,
- 4:47Speaker 7: which I came up with about fifteen minutes before.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I assume that too, I did.
- 4:55Speaker 7: And also, my brother has been adamant about saying that
- 4:59Speaker 7: my journey to the Pro Football Hall of Fame was
- 5:02Speaker 7: harder than his because.
- 5:04Speaker 6: I was first.
- 5:06Speaker 7: You know, when you're first, people may not understand your
- 5:13Speaker 7: outlook on where you want to be and what you
- 5:16Speaker 7: want to do with this. So there's hard and I'm
- 5:19Speaker 7: going to say not a lot of support. You know,
- 5:22Speaker 7: my family was like, oh, you got a game, okay,
- 5:25Speaker 7: Whereas when my brother had a game, they were there.
- 5:28Speaker 7: So you know, you have to understand. And my thing was,
- 5:34Speaker 7: and I think I've said this a million times, I
- 5:38Speaker 7: was my own standard, so I never failed. And so
- 5:41Speaker 7: Shannon was like, Bro, you didn't have anybody in front
- 5:44Speaker 7: of you. I knew because you did it, I could
- 5:47Speaker 7: do it because that's how we grew up. So it
- 5:51Speaker 7: was just one of those things that I wanted to
- 5:54Speaker 7: say to reiterate that everything I did athletically I did
- 5:58Speaker 7: to impress him.
- 6:00Speaker 8: Yeah, like I said, again, congratulations. We first met again
- 6:05Speaker 8: while I was a senior in high school and I
- 6:06Speaker 8: was at a West Virginia State spring practice where I
- 6:09Speaker 8: went to school. At at practice, you told me some things.
- 6:12Speaker 8: We'll talk about that all that I should have listened to,
- 6:16Speaker 8: but I didn't. So just coming from those you know,
- 6:21Speaker 8: humble beginnings and making that transition to obviously being a
- 6:26Speaker 8: Division one football player and playing in the NFL where
- 6:28Speaker 8: you're at today, do you think that really? How how
- 6:33Speaker 8: would you say that contributed to the journey and your
- 6:36Speaker 8: mentality of getting to it.
- 6:38Speaker 7: Didn't It was just a way of life. You know,
- 6:40Speaker 7: I'm not gonna, you know, I'm in the Hall of Fame.
- 6:44Speaker 7: I'm not going to build myself up even more by saying,
- 6:48Speaker 7: oh my god, it was so.
- 6:50Speaker 6: It was a way of life, you know.
- 6:51Speaker 7: It wasn't like, oh, I can't wait to come into
- 6:54Speaker 7: some money so I can get us out of this situation.
- 6:57Speaker 6: I wouldn't like that. I was always taught.
- 7:00Speaker 7: We were always taught to whatever we were doing, whether
- 7:03Speaker 7: it was cutting grass or picking tobaccos or you know,
- 7:06Speaker 7: rounding up chickens, you do that job better than anyone
- 7:09Speaker 7: else does anything else.
- 7:10Speaker 6: And that's all I try to do.
- 7:12Speaker 7: Where I came from and how I was raised did
- 7:16Speaker 7: not contribute to me being a football player and luckily
- 7:20Speaker 7: being selected to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 7:23Speaker 7: It didn't Being poor didn't motivate me to play football
- 7:29Speaker 7: any harder or any better, or any.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Other sports I played. It was just a way of life.
- 7:34Speaker 7: And when you have that way of life, every day
- 7:38Speaker 7: is the same day. So you just get up and
- 7:40Speaker 7: you go and do your job better than anyone else
- 7:43Speaker 7: does anything else.
- 7:44Speaker 3: All right, I'm gonna I'm going to ask the question
- 7:47Speaker 3: in regards to what I'm going to say, your talent
- 7:53Speaker 3: and how you used it, Like when did.
- 7:57Speaker 4: You realize like.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I'm I'm that kind of guy, like I'm I can
- 8:03Speaker 3: be or I am that guy to be a great player.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Even once you get to the NFL, there's that there's
- 8:11Speaker 3: that walk in with confidence and believing that you can be,
- 8:16Speaker 3: or there is that walking in and saying, I'm already
- 8:19Speaker 3: that guy.
- 8:20Speaker 4: So as soon as I get here, I'm going to
- 8:22Speaker 4: be that guy.
- 8:22Speaker 3: When did when did you figure out college NFL is
- 8:29Speaker 3: just I can do this, and I can do it,
- 8:32Speaker 3: not just do it, I can do it at the
- 8:34Speaker 3: highest level.
- 8:35Speaker 6: I never did. I know.
- 8:36Speaker 7: All I wanted to do was play carl I just wanted,
- 8:39Speaker 7: you know, playing high school.
- 8:40Speaker 6: Football was the best, the fun, the best man.
- 8:43Speaker 7: And then all these coaches are coming down saying how
- 8:47Speaker 7: wonderful their school is and our program and you know.
- 8:50Speaker 6: This and that and and no, that wasn't it.
- 8:53Speaker 7: And I go to the University of South Carolina and
- 8:56Speaker 7: you know, you get to meet people from all walks
- 8:58Speaker 7: of life, all backgrounds, color shapes, you know, religious beliefs,
- 9:03Speaker 7: and that was fun. And when I got in the NFL,
- 9:06Speaker 7: that's all I ever wanted to do. So where a
- 9:08Speaker 7: lot of people would say, you know, once I got
- 9:11Speaker 7: in the NFL, you know, I never could exhale man
- 9:13Speaker 7: because I was always trying to. I had already proven
- 9:17Speaker 7: what I wanted to do, what my goal and what
- 9:19Speaker 7: my dream was, and that was to play. Being an
- 9:22Speaker 7: All Pro or a pro bowler, or doing some of
- 9:25Speaker 7: the wonderful things my teammates helped me do. That wasn't important.
- 9:28Speaker 7: I was playing. So I enjoyed playing like I played.
- 9:34Speaker 7: I was a kid playing football. I enjoyed going to practice.
- 9:37Speaker 7: I enjoyed lifting weights, trying.
- 9:39Speaker 6: To eat right.
- 9:41Speaker 7: I enjoyed praying for help to be able to play
- 9:46Speaker 7: up to my abilities.
- 9:47Speaker 6: I enjoyed that.
- 9:48Speaker 7: So I never really got to the point where I
- 9:51Speaker 7: am I'm a guy, I'm that guy, I'm a superstar,
- 9:55Speaker 7: or I'm trying to be the head of the pack.
- 9:58Speaker 6: I never got there. M and and.
- 10:01Speaker 3: For you all, and I've told you all this, but
- 10:03Speaker 3: I want everybody to to hear this. Of every receiver
- 10:10Speaker 3: in my entire career that I've played against, never did
- 10:14Speaker 3: I ever find one to be playing at the highest
- 10:18Speaker 3: level who was a fool the whole.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Time during the game.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Like like, I did not come here to be I'm
- 10:30Speaker 3: telling you like I am, I am, I'm I'm locked in.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I'm trying to press him.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I'm playing in Man and Man and I know who
- 10:36Speaker 3: I got, right, Like, I know this dude can play.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And he's like talking to me and he's telling me, right,
- 10:43Speaker 3: it's a it's a run.
- 10:44Speaker 4: You can relax, you can relax.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And I'm like thinking, I know he's lying and and
- 10:49Speaker 3: I'm and I'm trying to focus, and he like he
- 10:53Speaker 3: never stopped.
- 10:54Speaker 6: I was never serious.
- 10:56Speaker 3: And again the fact that he was never really like
- 11:00Speaker 3: you would think, I never had a game face.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Yes, he never had the game face.
- 11:05Speaker 3: He's the he's the guy that he's the player that
- 11:09Speaker 3: the coach is like, Okay, I don't even know what
- 11:13Speaker 3: to say to him because he's laughing and joking and
- 11:15Speaker 3: he's gonna go out and he's gonna play at the
- 11:17Speaker 3: highest left.
- 11:18Speaker 8: And that was kind of my question because it seems
- 11:20Speaker 8: like from the comments that you just made, all the
- 11:22Speaker 8: interviews that I saw, is that I think a lot
- 11:24Speaker 8: of guys, talented guys, they can get in their own
- 11:27Speaker 8: head and there and they get in their own way, right,
- 11:30Speaker 8: it seems like you just never had a mentality where
- 11:32Speaker 8: you just you never overthought it.
- 11:34Speaker 4: You were just like you said before, you just played.
- 11:36Speaker 7: There's a lot of people that moved the goal posts
- 11:39Speaker 7: and they end up being miserable at a certain stage
- 11:42Speaker 7: in their life. Because the statement that I loved the
- 11:45Speaker 7: most is I didn't see myself here at thirty. My
- 11:49Speaker 7: career was over at twenty nine. I didn't see myself
- 11:52Speaker 7: here at thirty five. And I always ask when someone
- 11:55Speaker 7: says that, you know, because usually they're disappointed in where
- 11:58Speaker 7: they are. So when they say I didn't see myself
- 12:01Speaker 7: here at forty, I always go, well, what were you wearing?
- 12:07Speaker 7: And they're like, wait what, I'm like, what were you
- 12:11Speaker 7: wearing when you saw yourself at forty? And you know,
- 12:15Speaker 7: because that's a lot, and that's what you know. I
- 12:17Speaker 7: think what we have done to sports is we've made
- 12:21Speaker 7: it impossible for anyone to succeed. We made it impossible
- 12:27Speaker 7: that the kid can be Tom Brady. We've made it
- 12:30Speaker 7: impossible that a kid can be Carl Lee. You know,
- 12:33Speaker 7: we made it impossible for a kid to be Randy
- 12:36Speaker 7: Moss because, oh, their standard. We want to put them
- 12:40Speaker 7: so high, because once we knock them off, they'll fall
- 12:44Speaker 7: a lot farther.
- 12:46Speaker 6: And so you know, the thing is is this was
- 12:48Speaker 6: my goal.
- 12:49Speaker 7: And I start off every morning and I end every
- 12:52Speaker 7: night with this is my life. There are many like it,
- 12:57Speaker 7: but this one is mine. So I'm not going to
- 12:59Speaker 7: live of my life the way Lisa thinks I should.
- 13:02Speaker 4: You know, you're great. Now you're you're great.
- 13:05Speaker 7: You're in the Hall of Fame. But you know, where
- 13:07Speaker 7: do you do? You know Jerry Rice? And I'm like,
- 13:09Speaker 7: whatever Jerry Rice is, that's all Jerry. I was me
- 13:12Speaker 7: my entire sixty years on this earth. I have tried
- 13:16Speaker 7: my best to be me. Whatever that is. However, that
- 13:20Speaker 7: is based on how I was raised, the principles that
- 13:23Speaker 7: my mom, my grandmother, grandfather gave us. And so if
- 13:27Speaker 7: I could do that and even and I would say this,
- 13:30Speaker 7: you know, even before I was a Hall of Famer,
- 13:33Speaker 7: I could have a conversation about my career with anyone. Yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 7: because I was. I was happy with what I put
- 13:39Speaker 7: on film. A lot of guys can't do that because
- 13:43Speaker 7: they're thinking or trying now think you that you know,
- 13:47Speaker 7: Carl Lee played in the NFL. I wasn't Carl Lee,
- 13:51Speaker 7: but you know, so they try and either build themselves
- 13:54Speaker 7: up or they recognize the company and they try and
- 13:57Speaker 7: lower themselves. I never had to do that because I
- 14:00Speaker 7: was my own standard, so I never failed.
- 14:03Speaker 8: And I think that's the thing I'm most impressed with,
- 14:05Speaker 8: right because I think that even guys at the highest level,
- 14:07Speaker 8: they have those bitter bitterness when they don't get those
- 14:09Speaker 8: accolades and when things don't go right and we're not
- 14:11Speaker 8: not praise to a certain level and degree. So for
- 14:14Speaker 8: you to almost i won't even say, be humble, but
- 14:16Speaker 8: just to be content with what you did, what you accomplished,
- 14:19Speaker 8: and did what you set out to do, and let
- 14:22Speaker 8: it fall there and then you can judge it however
- 14:25Speaker 8: you was to judge it.
- 14:26Speaker 7: Well, you know in our Bibles we read that you know,
- 14:28Speaker 7: if you seek the Lord with all you have, all
- 14:32Speaker 7: the rest of this stuff will be added to you.
- 14:34Speaker 6: So I only wanted to play. You know.
- 14:38Speaker 7: My first high school coach, William Hall, taught me that
- 14:41Speaker 7: it's okay to pray for the other team, so the
- 14:44Speaker 7: care to pray for their health and well being, for
- 14:46Speaker 7: their safety, and it's okay to ask God not to
- 14:49Speaker 7: let us win or to help us win, but allow
- 14:52Speaker 7: us to play like we practice. Now, whatever that outcome
- 14:56Speaker 7: is that's a mirror shot you're looking at yourself. And
- 14:59Speaker 7: so I I've always felt that what I'm doing, I'm
- 15:03Speaker 7: doing this for me. I never did anything for public consumption.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Ninety percent of the people that haven't met me don't
- 15:11Speaker 7: like me. Ninety eight percent of the people that have
- 15:14Speaker 7: met me aren't sure if they like it because because
- 15:22Speaker 7: I never did anything to be well liked or to
- 15:24Speaker 7: make friends.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, so I have a question for you.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Starting I'm going to go back to your career with
- 15:30Speaker 5: the Packers from nineteen eighty eight to nineteen ninety four.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Of course, you know, I've seen videos of you and
- 15:37Speaker 5: and reels and clips of you saying that you're a
- 15:39Speaker 5: Green Bay Packer for life, that you're you know, that
- 15:41Speaker 5: is your team. You're dedicated to that team. But then
- 15:43Speaker 5: I ran across today something that kind of, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 5: sparked my interest, and it was a video of you
- 15:48Speaker 5: talking about after you had your your injury, your season
- 15:52Speaker 5: ending injury surgery, that the organization never really reached out
- 15:56Speaker 5: to you after you know that was and that that
- 16:00Speaker 5: bothered you.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Can can you tell something that bothered me? I was disappointed, Okay.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I had you know, I knew I had this issue
- 16:07Speaker 7: with my neck from C one to C three. I
- 16:10Speaker 7: think it was I was born without a ligament attached
- 16:13Speaker 7: to your dens and your spinal cord. Whichever doctor's out there,
- 16:16Speaker 7: they know what I'm talking about, and so every time
- 16:19Speaker 7: I would suddenly move, I would bump my spine. So
- 16:22Speaker 7: when I had the surgery, you know, no one from
- 16:27Speaker 7: the organization agreement packer organization. Now when I say no one,
- 16:31Speaker 7: no trainer, no coach, no player, no front office person,
- 16:36Speaker 7: no secretary, no one.
- 16:38Speaker 5: So do you still feel dedicated to the packers though?
- 16:40Speaker 7: Do you still they got nothing to do with them?
- 16:43Speaker 7: You know, that's the whole point is it has nothing
- 16:45Speaker 7: to do with them. Okay, they didn't.
- 16:48Speaker 6: You know.
- 16:49Speaker 7: I was disappointed in the common decency of a man
- 16:54Speaker 7: to be able to work with alongside, get to know,
- 16:59Speaker 7: and not concerned with the health and well being of
- 17:02Speaker 7: another man that they know.
- 17:04Speaker 6: So I was disappointed in that, yes, But you know what, I.
- 17:09Speaker 7: Slept really good after I got out of my brace.
- 17:13Speaker 7: I slept really good, going to ESPN and then on
- 17:15Speaker 7: the NFL networking, continuing to live. I found it very
- 17:21Speaker 7: interesting though. Now granted these are totally two totally different people.
- 17:25Speaker 7: I found it interesting that when I was at my
- 17:27Speaker 7: perceived lowest point twenty nine my career is over, I
- 17:31Speaker 7: could go in and have surgery and not walk again.
- 17:35Speaker 7: I can go in and have surgery and die on
- 17:37Speaker 7: the table because of where my injury was and the
- 17:41Speaker 7: fact that nobody reached out. But then once I got
- 17:45Speaker 7: selected to be a member of the Pro Football Hall
- 17:47Speaker 7: of Fame, I heard from a bunch of people that
- 17:49Speaker 7: I didn't even know. So I found that interestingly odd.
- 17:53Speaker 7: But like I said, it never hurt, never stung, never mad.
- 17:56Speaker 7: I was just disappointed and some of those people that
- 18:00Speaker 7: were there during that time I heard from, and you know,
- 18:04Speaker 7: for for I'm I'm really trying to be better at
- 18:08Speaker 7: not meeting people where they are because I was real
- 18:11Speaker 7: good at it. So if you gave me attitude, I
- 18:16Speaker 7: was real good at me.
- 18:19Speaker 6: And so I just I.
- 18:21Speaker 7: Accepted their congratulations. But uh, you know, I know that
- 18:27Speaker 7: that I'm here for a reason and I don't know
- 18:30Speaker 7: what that reason is, which is good. But you know,
- 18:32Speaker 7: the Green Bay Packers are my organization. I don't have
- 18:35Speaker 7: to be there. I got an opportunity to play for
- 18:38Speaker 7: that franchise for seven years, and without them, I'm I'm
- 18:42Speaker 7: probably not wearing this jacket.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Can can you give me, if if this is even possible,
- 18:49Speaker 3: if you could give me the moment that you were
- 18:53Speaker 3: walking out and your brother is standing there and you're
- 18:57Speaker 3: heading toward him.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Can you even.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Reflect on what that moment was like?
- 19:05Speaker 6: Or you're talking about yesterday before during the Hall of Fame?
- 19:10Speaker 6: Yeses to build.
- 19:15Speaker 7: Up is he was more excited about me being a
- 19:18Speaker 7: Hall of Famer than I was, and so his prayers
- 19:24Speaker 7: were probably a lot louder than other people who wanted
- 19:27Speaker 7: me to be a Hall of Famer because I think
- 19:30Speaker 7: he understood what kind of player I was and that
- 19:35Speaker 7: the only thing people would always say is that I
- 19:37Speaker 7: didn't play long enough. I mean, even this weekend in Canton,
- 19:42Speaker 7: I had people saying, congratulations, I'm being a Hall of Famer,
- 19:45Speaker 7: But boy, if you would have played longer, you'd have
- 19:47Speaker 7: all the records. And I'm like, wow, still ain't enough.
- 19:54Speaker 7: But you know, my brother's my best friend, and everything
- 19:58Speaker 7: that he has gone through, I've gone through with him.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Everything that I've gone through, he's gone through with me.
- 20:03Speaker 7: So you're talking about my brother looking at me and
- 20:09Speaker 7: being like a proud father or a proud little brother
- 20:15Speaker 7: or a proud parent. So yeah, that was really good,
- 20:19Speaker 7: really cool to see his face, to look at his
- 20:23Speaker 7: face and like I was saying about my speech, I
- 20:27Speaker 7: always knew that I was going to start with Coach
- 20:29Speaker 7: Hall because that's how I started playing, and I was
- 20:32Speaker 7: going to end with Shannon, but I didn't know how
- 20:36Speaker 7: to orchestrate or put that in order. And it was
- 20:41Speaker 7: funny how, you know, as Jared Allen was talking, it
- 20:45Speaker 7: kind of fell into place and I was like, I
- 20:47Speaker 7: don't want to think about it, just let it out.
- 20:48Speaker 6: But when you.
- 20:51Speaker 7: Standing there looking at his face and him crying and
- 20:54Speaker 7: in tears of joy, that was a pretty cool moment.
- 20:58Speaker 6: It really was.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I just can't imagine it, and
- 21:03Speaker 3: I was. I'm sitting there, me and Dominic are sitting
- 21:06Speaker 3: there and we're like watching.
- 21:08Speaker 4: This man, and it's like, I don't know if I
- 21:14Speaker 4: could even.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Even feel like what you guys were thinking and feeling
- 21:21Speaker 3: amongst each other. But it was like I was so proud,
- 21:25Speaker 3: like like it was almost like my brother just went
- 21:28Speaker 3: in you know what I'm saying, because.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I had gotten to I had gotten to know you.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Well enough, good enough, and could understand because all those
- 21:40Speaker 3: guys that I covered, you know, all those people that
- 21:42Speaker 3: I covered, and people ask me who is this, Who's
- 21:45Speaker 3: the best guy?
- 21:46Speaker 4: Who's that?
- 21:47Speaker 3: And I'm like, well, I know you said this guy,
- 21:50Speaker 3: but let me tell you about that guy over there,
- 21:52Speaker 3: and let me tell you what he did, because again,
- 21:55Speaker 3: the most amazing thing to me, and I can't repeat
- 21:59Speaker 3: myself enough tonight to understand when you're playing. Let's say
- 22:04Speaker 3: it's a Monday night game, it's a Prime game. Everybody's watching.
- 22:08Speaker 3: It's Vikings and it's the Packers, and it's Sterling Sharp
- 22:13Speaker 3: and Carlley. This dude is laughing and joking. He's telling
- 22:19Speaker 3: us in the huddle, why y'all even in the huddle,
- 22:21Speaker 3: y'all y'all.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Just playing man the man in blitzing, and I would play.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I mean I literally, I literally would have to tell
- 22:31Speaker 3: the DB's like, don't talk to him, don't talk, because
- 22:36Speaker 3: he's gonna talk you into a touchdown.
- 22:38Speaker 7: Her Thomas Thomas would talk, don't Chris Dovean.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Okay, they're up.
- 22:47Speaker 6: The highlight. I even got to talk to me a
- 22:51Speaker 6: little bit.
- 22:52Speaker 4: They're not gonna be on the highlight.
- 22:53Speaker 7: That's gonna be us and so you know, and that's
- 22:56Speaker 7: the thing about enjoying what you do.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Do you think I hate to interrupt, but do you
- 23:01Speaker 3: think the fact that you you could enjoy it so
- 23:05Speaker 3: much had a lot to do with how great?
- 23:08Speaker 4: Because I'm not gonna call it call it good, but
- 23:10Speaker 4: how great you were?
- 23:11Speaker 6: Know.
- 23:11Speaker 7: I think what it is, Carl, is like I said
- 23:14Speaker 7: about the destruction of sports.
- 23:16Speaker 6: You got to be a certain way.
- 23:18Speaker 7: You got to do it a certain way, you got
- 23:21Speaker 7: to understand it a certain way. And I don't know
- 23:25Speaker 7: if I will live long enough or talk enough to
- 23:27Speaker 7: be able to explain to people that the phrase your
- 23:31Speaker 7: best is good enough actually is. And so when I
- 23:36Speaker 7: was enjoying playing football at the professional level, you know,
- 23:41Speaker 7: my brother talked trash and his.
- 23:42Speaker 6: Trash talking with he did. I talk trash.
- 23:46Speaker 7: But I only talk to you because, man, we got
- 23:49Speaker 7: two and a half three hours to get through this thing.
- 23:52Speaker 7: I want you to come out healthy. I want to
- 23:53Speaker 7: come out healthy. You practice this week. I practiced this week.
- 23:57Speaker 7: In certain situations, we're gonna have to go up against
- 24:01Speaker 7: each other for a pass or a block. And I
- 24:05Speaker 7: want your best just like you want mine. Well guess
- 24:07Speaker 7: what that don't make you a bad guy if you win,
- 24:10Speaker 7: you know, you know. So I always wanted it to
- 24:15Speaker 7: be I'm doing what I want to do. If you're
- 24:17Speaker 7: not doing what you want to do at the level
- 24:20Speaker 7: you want to do it at, it's not my fault.
- 24:22Speaker 6: And so I always tried to enjoy.
- 24:25Speaker 7: Whether it was in Chicago or Minnesota or Tampa, I
- 24:30Speaker 7: wanted to play, enjoy playing, and.
- 24:35Speaker 6: My best was good enough.
- 24:36Speaker 7: I did my job better than anyone else did anything else.
- 24:39Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 24:40Speaker 8: And not only did your brother follow you on the
- 24:42Speaker 8: football field, but also follow you on TV. Because what
- 24:45Speaker 8: people may not know is that shortly after your playing
- 24:48Speaker 8: career you went to ESPN. Now you as a teenager
- 24:52Speaker 8: watching you, you were like kind of the first person
- 24:55Speaker 8: I seen in that position, not only talking from a
- 24:58Speaker 8: player's perspective, not just giving the coach talk, but you
- 25:01Speaker 8: actually had some swag. You were funny, You had that charisma.
- 25:06Speaker 6: So I was.
- 25:12Speaker 8: Because because I think people What people don't realize is
- 25:16Speaker 8: like you were sort of the first generation of that
- 25:18Speaker 8: to have a former player come on television not just
- 25:21Speaker 8: be a robot.
- 25:22Speaker 7: But I think it's not to cut you off. That's
- 25:25Speaker 7: the problem. The problem is is we all are. It's
- 25:28Speaker 7: so funny how our careers differ. But here we are,
- 25:32Speaker 7: on this day, at this time, sitting in the same place.
- 25:35Speaker 6: I mean, here we are.
- 25:36Speaker 7: How our careers different, Lisa, And here we are sitting
- 25:39Speaker 7: in the same place. So obviously what you did worked. Obviously,
- 25:44Speaker 7: hollis what you did worked. Here we are, you know,
- 25:47Speaker 7: as great as somebody may say or think we are.
- 25:50Speaker 7: We're sitting in the same place. And I think what
- 25:53Speaker 7: we're doing, what we've done to sports is we have
- 25:57Speaker 7: made those we want superhuman, and we have minimized those
- 26:01Speaker 7: we want. We have made the minimal. And my whole
- 26:05Speaker 7: existence has always been and not an act, but to
- 26:08Speaker 7: be me. And if you like it, that's wonderful. But
- 26:11Speaker 7: if you don't like it, you live in West Virginia.
- 26:14Speaker 7: I live in South Carolina. So if you don't like it,
- 26:16Speaker 7: I don't care. And I think that's the biggest thing
- 26:21Speaker 7: is just people will talk about being themselves and do
- 26:26Speaker 7: everything they can to be what you want them to be,
- 26:29Speaker 7: and that is so confusing that they never get And
- 26:33Speaker 7: I have adopted this about ten years ago. The difference
- 26:36Speaker 7: between joy and happiness. Happiness can be taken away. Joy
- 26:40Speaker 7: comes from within it cannot and so a lot of
- 26:43Speaker 7: people give up their joy because they're trying to make
- 26:46Speaker 7: you happy.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I love it.
- 26:48Speaker 8: And have you ever thought about kind of getting back,
- 26:51Speaker 8: whether it's podcast and whether getting.
- 26:53Speaker 7: Or a there's too many people talking, okay, there's way
- 26:55Speaker 7: too many people talking to podcasts. There's way too many
- 27:09Speaker 7: people with an opinion, and there's way too many people
- 27:12Speaker 7: with an opinion that's not educated. I mean, and I
- 27:15Speaker 7: think what what a lot of people don't realize is
- 27:18Speaker 7: how powerful that.
- 27:20Speaker 6: Mike and this tongue can be.
- 27:22Speaker 7: And so for instance, if you go, well, give me
- 27:25Speaker 7: your Mount Rushmore of wide receivers, I go, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 7: I like Fred Barnett.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Wayne Forbet, Uh.
- 27:35Speaker 7: Jake read Yeah, and uh James Laughton, and people are
- 27:41Speaker 7: gonna go what I'm going? I thought you asked me
- 27:43Speaker 7: for mine? Did you ask me for mine? To give
- 27:46Speaker 7: you your Mount Rushmore? And I think we have fallen
- 27:50Speaker 7: because of everybody has an opinion, everybody has a mic,
- 27:53Speaker 7: everybody has a camera phone. I think what we have done,
- 27:57Speaker 7: or what we're doing, is we're ruining sport. So when
- 28:01Speaker 7: guys are get asking questions, they're trying to think while
- 28:05Speaker 7: you're asking a question, you're not getting the honest answer.
- 28:07Speaker 7: So if I can't tell you an honest answer, guess
- 28:10Speaker 7: what how about we just not talk at all?
- 28:13Speaker 6: Well?
- 28:14Speaker 5: I like that a lot, all right, all right, So
- 28:16Speaker 5: I want to go back to the Hall of Fame game.
- 28:18Speaker 5: I saw you on TV. I saw your interview during
- 28:21Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame game, right, And so it was
- 28:24Speaker 5: the Chargers versus the Lions, and it was the traditional
- 28:28Speaker 5: kickoff game for the NFL preseason. So, Starline, what are
- 28:32Speaker 5: your thoughts about preseason games? Do you think there's enough
- 28:35Speaker 5: of them? Too many of them? Do you think you
- 28:37Speaker 5: know it's a predictor of future's success For this season?
- 28:40Speaker 7: I don't have to play, so I don't care. I mean, honestly,
- 28:45Speaker 7: the thing is is if you don't think everything that
- 28:50Speaker 7: we do is about money, you're killing yourself.
- 28:54Speaker 6: So as a.
- 28:56Speaker 7: Player, guess what if we'd have played two preseason games
- 28:59Speaker 7: and that's what it was, we'd had to play six,
- 29:01Speaker 7: then that's what it was.
- 29:03Speaker 6: You know.
- 29:03Speaker 7: I always used to say to myself, I never want
- 29:07Speaker 7: to say when I played, you know, we used to
- 29:11Speaker 7: do two a days for a month, yeah, and were
- 29:15Speaker 7: hitting and we were hitting. Yeah, And those two days
- 29:19Speaker 7: I don't like comparing myself or my era to what
- 29:22Speaker 7: they're doing today. Sure, I just sit back and don't
- 29:25Speaker 7: watch it because I play golf, so I don't really
- 29:28Speaker 7: concern myself. I don't really concern myself with what they're doing.
- 29:32Speaker 6: But I don't.
- 29:33Speaker 7: I don't have a thought on it if there's too
- 29:35Speaker 7: many or too little. It's like in IL, I don't
- 29:37Speaker 7: have a thought on guys making a million dollars or
- 29:40Speaker 7: two million dollars on their name, image and likeness, and
- 29:43Speaker 7: oh what would you have made? Well, I don't know,
- 29:45Speaker 7: because we didn't have it. So there's no sense in
- 29:48Speaker 7: racking my brain going back, making myself angry because I
- 29:52Speaker 7: didn't get denial.
- 29:53Speaker 4: I find it.
- 29:54Speaker 3: I found it interesting because like I don't I don't
- 29:57Speaker 3: really particularly care to watch football today either, Like I
- 30:01Speaker 3: don't have that as a as a thing, Like I
- 30:05Speaker 3: don't carry that. I don't even want to carry that
- 30:08Speaker 3: as a as a person, you know. And and I think,
- 30:12Speaker 3: I think what you have kind of done is you
- 30:16Speaker 3: I'll say you had forcefully put people at people uncomfortable
- 30:21Speaker 3: to come at you with football, you know.
- 30:25Speaker 4: And and I think on.
- 30:26Speaker 3: My side of it, I'll accept somebody having the conversation.
- 30:30Speaker 3: I'll listen to it, but it's not really something that
- 30:35Speaker 3: but but you you really want to reflect on And
- 30:37Speaker 3: I get that people people really want to hear it
- 30:41Speaker 3: from you when they when they're talking to you, they
- 30:43Speaker 3: want to know like and and can tell me who's
- 30:46Speaker 3: the best receiver, tell me this or tell me that,
- 30:49Speaker 3: and and I know that's important to them, But it
- 30:53Speaker 3: isn't something really that you're really gonna even understand when
- 30:57Speaker 3: I you know, I gave I gave him an now
- 31:00Speaker 3: of him and Rice of who I would think is
- 31:04Speaker 3: the best player, which would be him and not because
- 31:05Speaker 3: he's in the room. Yeah, I've said that forever, But
- 31:12Speaker 3: somebody who's a who's a Rice fan, it's gonna be like, well,
- 31:16Speaker 3: how do you get that?
- 31:17Speaker 4: Like, how do you try to give you the opinion?
- 31:20Speaker 3: I saw them both, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 31:22Speaker 3: I sit in front of them and try to put
- 31:24Speaker 3: my hands on them, and I can make that judgement.
- 31:27Speaker 8: But just to go with that, though, I think for
- 31:29Speaker 8: the average listener it may be hard for them to
- 31:32Speaker 8: comprehend how gentlemen who have reached the highest highs in
- 31:36Speaker 8: the NFL don't have that sort of you know, passion
- 31:40Speaker 8: for the game whatever.
- 31:41Speaker 6: Love for football.
- 31:43Speaker 7: Yeah, the love for football because as a fan, they
- 31:48Speaker 7: talk to us like we're fans.
- 31:51Speaker 6: As a fan, I want you to enjoy what I enjoy.
- 31:55Speaker 7: I'm like, so you're telling me it's fun to go
- 31:58Speaker 7: sit in traffic for forty five.
- 32:00Speaker 6: Minutes to an Now you telling me it's fun to
- 32:03Speaker 6: sit and.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Do that.
- 32:06Speaker 6: But I don't know.
- 32:07Speaker 5: Maybe I'm just think got one.
- 32:11Speaker 7: Of burger and a beer, so I'm gonna go and
- 32:13Speaker 7: miss the entire first quarter to get the burger in
- 32:16Speaker 7: the beer. Now I got to go to the restaurom
- 32:19Speaker 7: and I got to stand in the line for forty
- 32:21Speaker 7: five minutes to go.
- 32:22Speaker 6: That's fun. Okay, you keep having it because.
- 32:28Speaker 7: I'm gonna make it one less player that your personally
- 32:31Speaker 7: that you have to deal with. But it goes back
- 32:33Speaker 7: to be in your own standard. Everybody wants to compare
- 32:41Speaker 7: h this person to that person Deebo Samuels who went
- 32:45Speaker 7: to South Carolina. People go, oh, he reminds me of you.
- 32:51Speaker 7: What am I supposed to do with that? When you
- 32:54Speaker 7: look in the NFL? What receiver in the NFL reminded
- 32:57Speaker 7: you of you? And really look at receivers kind.
- 33:01Speaker 6: Of like that.
- 33:02Speaker 7: You know, So everybody's not asking a question because they
- 33:06Speaker 7: they want an answer. They're asking a question because they
- 33:09Speaker 7: want an answer that they can debate or kick.
- 33:13Speaker 6: Around the work.
- 33:14Speaker 7: So it has nothing really to do with the answer
- 33:17Speaker 7: you give. It has to do with what am I
- 33:20Speaker 7: going to do with the answer you give me.
- 33:22Speaker 8: I think that's because what we try to do on
- 33:24Speaker 8: the show, we obviously we talk sports, but we also
- 33:26Speaker 8: talked social issues, mentality, different things of that nature. And
- 33:29Speaker 8: I think far as what I'm getting out of that
- 33:31Speaker 8: is sort of that standard. And I think to your point,
- 33:34Speaker 8: not just in sports, but in business in different fields,
- 33:38Speaker 8: we we lose that right because we we don't try
- 33:41Speaker 8: to just live up or achieve our standards, and we
- 33:44Speaker 8: try to make somebody else's standards or objectives.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Grown always trying to connect somebody to Holicis Hollis is
- 33:54Speaker 3: kind of like such and such.
- 33:56Speaker 4: At least, it's kind of like do is.
- 33:59Speaker 7: I don't go tools or I don't go to teams
- 34:02Speaker 7: and talk to the team because I want you to
- 34:05Speaker 7: go on your journey your way. I want you to
- 34:08Speaker 7: be able to say, you know what, man, I played football,
- 34:11Speaker 7: but but uh, you know, I enjoyed every second of
- 34:16Speaker 7: the Man, that was great for me playing a lot
- 34:18Speaker 7: of golf and a lot of programs. I get a
- 34:21Speaker 7: chance to play with college golfers, and it's so interesting
- 34:25Speaker 7: to be like, you know.
- 34:26Speaker 6: Hey, so hey house, where'd you go to school?
- 34:29Speaker 9: Oh?
- 34:29Speaker 7: Man, I just went to a little school up in
- 34:32Speaker 7: West Virginia. Man, it wasn't nothing big. I'm like, wait
- 34:34Speaker 7: a minute, So you went there, got an education, got
- 34:37Speaker 7: a chance to play golf.
- 34:38Speaker 6: But you're gonna put your school down now because of
- 34:41Speaker 6: it wasn't.
- 34:44Speaker 4: I that that is a that is a legitimate That's.
- 34:47Speaker 6: What I'm doing. Hey, where'd you play football? Oh?
- 34:50Speaker 7: I played at Metro State. Man, you know, just a
- 34:53Speaker 7: D nine school, you know, out in the middle of nowhere.
- 34:56Speaker 7: But I'm like, oh, but you went there, you got
- 34:59Speaker 7: an education, But now you're gonna minimize the school that
- 35:02Speaker 7: gave you a chance to continue to do what you
- 35:05Speaker 7: want to do.
- 35:06Speaker 6: And that's just basically.
- 35:09Speaker 7: I'm gonna trust, well, he went to South Carolina and
- 35:11Speaker 7: he was an All American, So I'm going to try
- 35:13Speaker 7: and lower my standard.
- 35:15Speaker 6: Because it doesn't come close to his standard.
- 35:18Speaker 7: And I think that's That's another one of the things
- 35:20Speaker 7: that we do in sport. We don't enjoy it for ourselves.
- 35:24Speaker 7: We enjoy it for whatever I can say, do or
- 35:27Speaker 7: for other people.
- 35:28Speaker 6: I'm either going to make you look good or I'm
- 35:30Speaker 6: gonna make you look bad with my sport. That's how
- 35:33Speaker 6: we listen.
- 35:33Speaker 5: So, Sterling, I'm gonna I'm going to bring up a
- 35:35Speaker 5: subject that's near and dear to Carl, Carl's heart, and
- 35:38Speaker 5: that would be Aaron Rodgers. So we know that, you know,
- 35:42Speaker 5: he's starting his journey with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season,
- 35:44Speaker 5: and he's he's already come out and pretty much said,
- 35:48Speaker 5: I think on the Pat McAfee show and several other
- 35:50Speaker 5: venues that this will probably be his last year. What
- 35:55Speaker 5: are your thoughts about his career and him coming to
- 35:58Speaker 5: the Steelers this year? For one, as to.
- 36:00Speaker 7: Raw, that's that's a hard question to answer based on
- 36:04Speaker 7: the way you asked.
- 36:06Speaker 6: Is there another way you could ask that question?
- 36:08Speaker 5: Okay, let's see then let me put it in different words.
- 36:12Speaker 5: So he's he's definitely or he's not definitely. He said
- 36:16Speaker 5: on different social platforms that he's retiring this year, and
- 36:20Speaker 5: so he you know, he was on the fence, you know,
- 36:23Speaker 5: after he left the Jets about it.
- 36:25Speaker 7: He's already retired, that's what you're saying. You're saying, aready
- 36:30Speaker 7: because you're saying he's already retired.
- 36:33Speaker 4: Do you think so?
- 36:34Speaker 5: Because I said he was on the fence about coming back.
- 36:36Speaker 6: Then you're already retired.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Yes, And I would one agree with that.
- 36:41Speaker 5: Because I don't know if he's ever said that publicly.
- 36:44Speaker 5: But I mean, he took long and all I don't
- 36:46Speaker 5: know if to make that decision, which makes me think that, you.
- 36:50Speaker 6: Know, my thing is is that I should never have
- 36:56Speaker 6: to tell you how good.
- 36:57Speaker 7: I am, because if I I got to tell you
- 37:00Speaker 7: how good I am, then I'm probably If I could
- 37:03Speaker 7: tell you what I did, I probably didn't do anything.
- 37:06Speaker 7: And so when you know, studying psychology, when someone says
- 37:13Speaker 7: to you, can I be honest, they're ready A lot.
- 37:18Speaker 7: I don't mean this, Lisa address you have on I
- 37:23Speaker 7: don't mean this in a negative way.
- 37:25Speaker 5: But and I'm a little nervous dressed for tonight, but
- 37:32Speaker 5: that's okay.
- 37:33Speaker 7: There's a lot of things that ar does that are him.
- 37:37Speaker 7: I don't know him well enough to be able to
- 37:39Speaker 7: interpret his mannerisms.
- 37:41Speaker 6: But you know, in our game, either you're in or
- 37:43Speaker 6: you're out.
- 37:45Speaker 7: And if you're not in, then they will kick you out,
- 37:48Speaker 7: whether it's through an injury, whether it's through your teammates
- 37:52Speaker 7: not believing in you. You can't fake That's what I
- 37:56Speaker 7: love about sports. Can't fake it. Sure you either in
- 37:59Speaker 7: or you're out, and there is no in between. And
- 38:01Speaker 7: a lot of people fail in sports because hall this
- 38:04Speaker 7: ain't in it. He's doing it for me, and I
- 38:08Speaker 7: think that when I look at Aaron Rodgers, He's always
- 38:11Speaker 7: been a good friend to me. He's always been a
- 38:13Speaker 7: good you know, I think, a really good player, and
- 38:17Speaker 7: I think if everything falls their way, they could be
- 38:20Speaker 7: a really good team. He throws it too well. I
- 38:24Speaker 7: think he sees the field too well. I think he
- 38:27Speaker 7: orchestrates way too well. And I think if if they
- 38:31Speaker 7: can protect him running the ball enough, play action pass game,
- 38:37Speaker 7: he's one of the best. I think they could be
- 38:39Speaker 7: successful and whatever that is, you know, as I think
- 38:42Speaker 7: they'll have a winning record.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Now. See my fear. My fear is if they don't
- 38:47Speaker 3: protect him. I don't know if he's able at this
- 38:53Speaker 3: point to take enough hits.
- 38:56Speaker 7: He's mentally, he's mentally uh, he's very mentally. He knows
- 39:00Speaker 7: how to protect himself. I mean the ones you don't see.
- 39:04Speaker 7: You know, that's hard. But when he's in, he knows
- 39:06Speaker 7: who's going to get there first. He knows, he knows
- 39:10Speaker 7: that that you know, it's going to be this guy
- 39:12Speaker 7: or that guy.
- 39:13Speaker 6: So you know how to position yourself.
- 39:15Speaker 7: You know that you know how to position yourself to
- 39:18Speaker 7: absorb the contact where it's not as now how it
- 39:22Speaker 7: looks on TV. I think mentally he is. He's a
- 39:25Speaker 7: lot strong, a lot stronger, and a lot sharper than
- 39:28Speaker 7: people want to give him credit. Because you know, right now,
- 39:31Speaker 7: we don't like ar you know, we don't like the
- 39:33Speaker 7: fact that he's aloof sometimes, and we don't like the
- 39:36Speaker 7: fact that he wants to go to Egypt right before
- 39:39Speaker 7: training camp for we don't like those things because we
- 39:43Speaker 7: don't or we can't do it. So I think Aaron
- 39:45Speaker 7: has been in the league long enough that he knows
- 39:48Speaker 7: a lot of the tricks of the trade to be
- 39:49Speaker 7: able to survive it.

- 41:17Speaker 2: Carl Lee. Now back to the conversation.
- 41:21Speaker 8: Now, now, I want to go back because you know
- 41:23Speaker 8: a lot of us, not I'm not gonna say a
- 41:25Speaker 8: lot of us, but some of us.
- 41:26Speaker 6: See what he just did.
- 41:29Speaker 4: That wasn't a lot of us.
- 41:31Speaker 8: Well, I don't want to see a lot of them
- 41:32Speaker 8: because I ain't trying to put all brothers in that box.
- 41:35Speaker 8: But you know some of us, you know who cling
- 41:38Speaker 8: on the sports, You know we're from projects.
- 41:40Speaker 4: I was from the projects right here in West Virginia.
- 41:42Speaker 8: And I've heard your brother allude to your upbringing, but
- 41:47Speaker 8: I did not know until that interview the other day.
- 41:51Speaker 8: I mean what you guys did for money, your hustles,
- 41:53Speaker 8: you know, the hey rounding up the chicken, the rabbits,
- 41:57Speaker 8: I mean a thousand chickens for what was.
- 42:01Speaker 6: It a dollar?
- 42:02Speaker 8: Thousand a dollar one thousand, So because when I first
- 42:04Speaker 8: heard it, I thought it was a dollar per chicken.
- 42:08Speaker 4: A thousands, that's pretty dollar a thousand, dollar a thousand.
- 42:11Speaker 8: You said you would make around sixteen ten dollars sixteen thousand.
- 42:17Speaker 7: If the four of us went in a chicken house
- 42:18Speaker 7: that had ten thousand chickens, we got a dollar a thousand,
- 42:22Speaker 7: So we made ten dollars.
- 42:23Speaker 8: So what so just walk us through that? So does
- 42:26Speaker 8: that intel like you have to like physically grab them
- 42:29Speaker 8: and pitt them on the truck.
- 42:30Speaker 7: Okay, So back in the day, back in the day
- 42:34Speaker 7: when we were doing it, let's say it's the four
- 42:38Speaker 7: of us. So let's say Carl would be a catcher.
- 42:42Speaker 7: So his job is to catch. So you do it
- 42:47Speaker 7: at night because they call them chickens for a reason.
- 42:49Speaker 6: That's why you can't run up on them because they're
- 42:52Speaker 6: going to run away from you.
- 42:53Speaker 7: So at night they can't see and so they'll all
- 42:55Speaker 7: huddle together. So Carl is the catcher and the three
- 42:58Speaker 7: of us are carriers. So we're either three and three
- 43:03Speaker 7: or we're three and four, and all we do is
- 43:06Speaker 7: is we walk and take them to the truck. He's catching,
- 43:09Speaker 7: so it could take you anywhere from an hour and
- 43:12Speaker 7: a half to two and a half hours. And you're
- 43:15Speaker 7: talking starting at eleven o'clock and you're talking about finishing
- 43:18Speaker 7: at one. Okay, now you've got to go home. You
- 43:22Speaker 7: got all this chicken stuff on you. Well you're not
- 43:24Speaker 7: just jumping into bed, are you?
- 43:26Speaker 4: No way?
- 43:26Speaker 6: Okay?
- 43:27Speaker 7: Well okay, so now you don't You don't have running water.
- 43:31Speaker 7: So the water that you have, you go have to
- 43:34Speaker 7: heat up. So you got to wait for that to happen.
- 43:38Speaker 7: And so now you not in a bathtub. You're in
- 43:41Speaker 7: a what we would call a washtub, and so you
- 43:44Speaker 7: are legging and you know, you wash your body like
- 43:48Speaker 7: you wash your car from the top down, so you
- 43:51Speaker 7: wash your face and you work your way down. Well,
- 43:53Speaker 7: now it's three o'clock. So now you get into bed,
- 43:57Speaker 7: and guess what. You got to be ready for the
- 44:00Speaker 7: bus at seven point thirty or you know when I
- 44:03Speaker 7: started driving, You know you got to be at school
- 44:05Speaker 7: by eight.
- 44:06Speaker 6: Then you got practice. You go do that, and.
- 44:09Speaker 7: Then guess what, you do a little homework and then
- 44:13Speaker 7: we're right back catching him again tomorrow.
- 44:16Speaker 8: And I guess that's what I'm saying because to me,
- 44:18Speaker 8: I'm just amazed because.
- 44:19Speaker 7: The way of life all us don't don't be amazed.
- 44:21Speaker 7: But what I'm saying, and I'm what you're saying, don't
- 44:25Speaker 7: get up.
- 44:25Speaker 8: And I love it because a lot of people come
- 44:28Speaker 8: from where I come from a similar background. We walk
- 44:31Speaker 8: through life with a chip because of that background. But
- 44:34Speaker 8: you and your brother, y'all don't like you said.
- 44:36Speaker 7: My brother, my brother that motive And I said this,
- 44:40Speaker 7: it's amazing how two people can look out the same
- 44:42Speaker 7: window and see two totally different things. That motivated him
- 44:47Speaker 7: had no effect on me. And that's amazing, had no.
- 44:50Speaker 6: Effect on me.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Did you say you don't have a chip?
- 44:55Speaker 3: No, No, Okay, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna challenge that.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Okay, Okay, I can so.
- 45:06Speaker 3: So during your time playing and even after your time playing,
- 45:11Speaker 3: you have the ability to be distant with people. And
- 45:16Speaker 3: and I'm and and my thing is, where would where
- 45:19Speaker 3: would that? Where does that come from? Is that just
- 45:23Speaker 3: the uncomfortable when you say distant? Well, I mean what
- 45:25Speaker 3: are we talking?
- 45:25Speaker 4: Okay? Like like you don't happen.
- 45:27Speaker 6: I don't like. I don't like people.
- 45:31Speaker 7: Okay, I avoid people as much as humanly possible. And
- 45:34Speaker 7: it's hard and.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Where and where? Okay, and again, now think about this.
- 45:40Speaker 3: You're a great football player, and now you're a notable
- 45:44Speaker 3: in history football player in the Hall of Fame, and
- 45:50Speaker 3: everybody's going to be attracted to you. I'm I'm, I'm,
- 45:53Speaker 3: I'm your friend. You decide you volunteered to come on
- 45:57Speaker 3: this show for me, invited myself. Yes you did, and
- 46:01Speaker 3: you don't have to do that. But there are but
- 46:04Speaker 3: there are people, and there are things that I know
- 46:07Speaker 3: and I've seen where you have been.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Like no, well, coach, you ain't people.
- 46:12Speaker 7: This this is my life. There are many like it,
- 46:19Speaker 7: but this one is mine. And my daughter's thirty one
- 46:23Speaker 7: years old. So when she was younger, she heard no
- 46:26Speaker 7: see many times, and we've tried to teach her words
- 46:31Speaker 7: like no, don't want or can't eliminate options. So on
- 46:37Speaker 7: a day where I don't want to sign autographs, the
- 46:39Speaker 7: answer is no, there is no option.
- 46:43Speaker 6: You ain't getting one.
- 46:44Speaker 7: Okay, however you feel or however your parents feel, or
- 46:48Speaker 7: take a picture, the answer is no.
- 46:51Speaker 6: And a lot of people don't accept no.
- 46:53Speaker 7: So what I do is is I try and help
- 46:56Speaker 7: those people by staying in a way stay away from them.
- 47:00Speaker 6: So I don't put them to have to accept the answer.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Note Sterling, I want to say something really quick. If
- 47:06Speaker 5: you don't have anything nice to say, come sit beside me. Okay,
- 47:09Speaker 5: I know we'll we'll keep each other great company. So
- 47:12Speaker 5: I want to go back to something that I've heard
- 47:14Speaker 5: you say several times. You've said it, you said it
- 47:16Speaker 5: before when we had you call into the podcast. You
- 47:19Speaker 5: mentioned it also during your hof induction ceremony, and it
- 47:24Speaker 5: was the saying that learned to follow.
- 47:26Speaker 7: You have to learn to follow before you can where
- 47:28Speaker 7: you can lead. The problem is is it? And I
- 47:33Speaker 7: got or I get this a lot from people. We
- 47:38Speaker 7: as a society have gotten so strong that we don't
- 47:42Speaker 7: ask for help. We don't know what we're doing, but
- 47:44Speaker 7: we want to.
- 47:45Speaker 6: Ask for help. When you learn how to follow, you
- 47:50Speaker 6: learn that.
- 47:50Speaker 7: Guess what if I was coached by by two high
- 47:55Speaker 7: school coaches that really never played outside of high school.
- 48:00Speaker 7: One was at an all black school and coach Hall
- 48:03Speaker 7: and coach McCall is a military man who you know,
- 48:05Speaker 7: never played outside of high school. Why am I listening
- 48:08Speaker 7: to them? I get to college, I got a position
- 48:11Speaker 7: coach that played at Carson Newman little receiver knew what
- 48:15Speaker 7: he was doing, and so it kind of made sense.
- 48:20Speaker 7: But if you don't learn to follow, and following is
- 48:23Speaker 7: not doing what you do or saying what you say.
- 48:26Speaker 7: Following is watching what you do, watching how you say it.
- 48:31Speaker 7: And I remember my grandfather used to be very direct,
- 48:38Speaker 7: and a lot of people didn't like that. I did
- 48:40Speaker 7: because I knew where I stood. I always liked letting
- 48:43Speaker 7: you know where you stand because a lot of people
- 48:47Speaker 7: aren't sure. If Hollis likes them, you know, you know somehow,
- 48:51Speaker 7: and I just let you know where we stand, and
- 48:53Speaker 7: then all we can develop our friendship around that. When
- 48:57Speaker 7: I'm thinking for you, get you in trouble. Learning how
- 49:01Speaker 7: to follow is very It's a difficult task because that
- 49:06Speaker 7: means you know more than me. You know, I used
- 49:09Speaker 7: to always tell my daughter, I've already been your age,
- 49:12Speaker 7: you ain't never been mine. So wherever you think or
- 49:15Speaker 7: you feel like you may be smarter than me, your
- 49:18Speaker 7: neurons are firing faster than mine.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Slow down, they're not.
- 49:23Speaker 3: I'm stealing that you're doing that to night?
- 49:28Speaker 4: I got four tonight.
- 49:29Speaker 8: So and that on that same vein at least's question
- 49:33Speaker 8: you towards the end of your career. You had this
- 49:36Speaker 8: new coach, John Grutin, and to that point, I believe
- 49:41Speaker 8: you probably applied those same principles because I mean, you're
- 49:43Speaker 8: in you having all success, and you have this new
- 49:45Speaker 8: coach essentially teaching you a new way of sort of
- 49:48Speaker 8: looking at things.
- 49:50Speaker 6: Yes or no.
- 49:51Speaker 7: Okay, buddy, guys taught me position body position. Now you're
- 49:57Speaker 7: talking to a consensus all America. Leaving the University of
- 50:01Speaker 7: South Carolina. You're talking to a guy that the Green
- 50:04Speaker 7: Bay Packers drafted seventh in the first round.
- 50:07Speaker 6: So I'm gonna come there and you're gonna do what
- 50:09Speaker 6: with me?
- 50:10Speaker 7: So you got to learn to follow because he's got
- 50:12Speaker 7: a job, So why don't I incorporate.
- 50:15Speaker 6: What he's doing into my game?
- 50:18Speaker 7: And then I got sarm Lewis came from San Francisco
- 50:21Speaker 7: with Mike Hongren coached the greatest receiver that we've ever seen.
- 50:24Speaker 6: Searm did two things for me.
- 50:26Speaker 7: One, he taught me to understand why plays are being
- 50:29Speaker 7: called run and passed. And the most important thing Sharam
- 50:34Speaker 7: did for me was he never mentioned me and Jerry
- 50:38Speaker 7: in the same sentence, so he never took away my
- 50:41Speaker 7: confidence or made me feel inferior. When I got John Gruden,
- 50:46Speaker 7: he took my game to the absolute highest, which is
- 50:49Speaker 7: probably why I was okay with my career ending. John
- 50:52Speaker 7: Gruden told me, you know, you know enough about defenses,
- 50:55Speaker 7: and you know enough about defensive backs study other receivers
- 51:00Speaker 7: so you can incorporate what they do into your game.
- 51:03Speaker 7: I mean, just imagine, I'm coming off a year where
- 51:07Speaker 7: I led the league and catch his yards and touchdown
- 51:10Speaker 7: and I got John Gruden telling me, we're going to
- 51:12Speaker 7: do this well in leading the league and catches yards
- 51:16Speaker 7: and touchdowns. I said in an NFL record which I
- 51:18Speaker 7: broke under John Gruden. So learning how to follow. And
- 51:23Speaker 7: John Gruden is a small white quarterback from Dayton, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 7: quarterback of Dayton, So what does he know about playing receiver?
- 51:29Speaker 6: You know?
- 51:30Speaker 7: But when you learn to follow, you understand that they
- 51:33Speaker 7: got jobs to do and that they're in your life
- 51:35Speaker 7: for a reason. So the biggest thing is is I'm
- 51:38Speaker 7: here for a reason. I'm not here only because I
- 51:41Speaker 7: wanted to and calls one of my best friends, I'm
- 51:44Speaker 7: here for a reason. So I think what I'm saying
- 51:47Speaker 7: on these airways is supposed to be heard by someone.
- 51:51Speaker 7: And so what I got to remember is don't mess
- 51:54Speaker 7: this up. You know, you got a truth to tell.
- 51:57Speaker 7: Tell the truth. I don't need to exalt my self anymore.
- 52:01Speaker 6: You know.
- 52:02Speaker 7: I got a gold jacket that I didn't want, but
- 52:04Speaker 7: I got it. I got a chance to play in
- 52:06Speaker 7: the NFL, which is the only thing I ever wanted
- 52:08Speaker 7: to do. So in giving back some of the knowledge,
- 52:12Speaker 7: this is some of the things that I have to do.
- 52:15Speaker 6: Love it.
- 52:16Speaker 4: And you know, to your point in kind of closing
- 52:19Speaker 4: this out, but.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Pete Carroll was that guy for me, and hearing you talk,
- 52:27Speaker 3: I can I can relate to what Pete was for me.
- 52:31Speaker 3: And it's it's amazing when you get that guy that
- 52:36Speaker 3: you're hearing and you're like everything that he says you
- 52:40Speaker 3: can you can equate to it, and like it's like,
- 52:43Speaker 3: oh I can do this, let me change this and
- 52:47Speaker 3: do it this way.
- 52:48Speaker 4: And it changed my whole career.
- 52:53Speaker 3: And when you find that, and I'm gonna say, if
- 52:56Speaker 3: you find it anywhere, if you can find a person
- 52:58Speaker 3: that you can see, you will, you will.
- 53:01Speaker 6: They're in your life. The problem is is you're.
- 53:04Speaker 7: Coaching me and Hollis is telling me, Man, Carl, don't
- 53:07Speaker 7: know what he's talking about.
- 53:09Speaker 4: You need to be you need to be outside shape,
- 53:12Speaker 4: you know.
- 53:12Speaker 7: So now I'm getting information from four different people.
- 53:16Speaker 6: Now what am I? What am I going to do?
- 53:18Speaker 7: So when you learn to follow, I'm going to give
- 53:21Speaker 7: Lisa her do you know what, Whatever I need to
- 53:24Speaker 7: do in TV or radio to be better, she's doing it.
- 53:28Speaker 7: So why don't I watch her when she don't think
- 53:30Speaker 7: I'm watching? Why don't I listen to how she speaks
- 53:33Speaker 7: when she makes a point?
- 53:34Speaker 6: You know?
- 53:35Speaker 7: And and the thing is is learning to public speak
- 53:39Speaker 7: like and and what I attempted to do in my
- 53:42Speaker 7: speech on Saturday was I wanted to I wanted to
- 53:49Speaker 7: come out serious and explain this ain't about me. This
- 53:54Speaker 7: gold jacket is not about me. Okay, I got what
- 53:57Speaker 7: I wanted. I got to play, That's all I want it.
- 54:00Speaker 7: This is for my family and my friends that made
- 54:03Speaker 7: the journey. I want you to understand how important it
- 54:06Speaker 7: was for them.
- 54:08Speaker 6: Okay.
- 54:09Speaker 7: So in doing that learning to follow, I was just
- 54:12Speaker 7: showing people or trying to tell people, and how I
- 54:15Speaker 7: spoke because your voice inflection tells you this is serious.
- 54:20Speaker 6: Might need to take might need to And then.
- 54:24Speaker 7: Before we go too far over the edge of the seriousness,
- 54:28Speaker 7: you know, my brother said that last time we were
- 54:31Speaker 7: here that he was the only player in the Hall
- 54:33Speaker 7: of Fame that could say this, that he's the second
- 54:35Speaker 7: best player in his own family.
- 54:37Speaker 6: While I agree with that statement.
- 54:41Speaker 7: So now instead of you falling over the edge, let
- 54:44Speaker 7: me bring it back and then you know and and
- 54:48Speaker 7: so you have something to say, and you want to
- 54:52Speaker 7: you want to be heard, and that's a problem. That's
- 54:56Speaker 7: your job is to say it, whether you hear it
- 54:58Speaker 7: now or tomorrow. I'm not here to change your mind,
- 55:02Speaker 7: but I'm here to get but naked in your mind.
- 55:04Speaker 6: So when you driving home tonight you'd be like, You'll
- 55:08Speaker 6: be like.
- 55:09Speaker 4: Wow, he striking this all out here.
- 55:13Speaker 7: But I'm like, is when you get in people's minds,
- 55:19Speaker 7: it's not going to affect them right now. It's not
- 55:22Speaker 7: my job. My job is to tell you. I'm a messenger.
- 55:25Speaker 7: Let me tell you this. I'm not telling you to
- 55:27Speaker 7: do it my way. I'm telling you so you can
- 55:31Speaker 7: figure out how to do it your way. Because what
- 55:34Speaker 7: I had was is I had some really strong men
- 55:37Speaker 7: that I followed, and the guys that I talked about,
- 55:40Speaker 7: and Buddy and Sherman and Coach Hall and Coach McCall
- 55:43Speaker 7: I had some really strong women that I got a
- 55:46Speaker 7: chance to follow. I mean, when I first got to
- 55:49Speaker 7: my first Pro Bowl, carl adopted me. Hey man, you know,
- 55:53Speaker 7: you hang out with us. We're gonna do this, this
- 55:55Speaker 7: and this. You know where he could have easily ignored
- 55:58Speaker 7: me because I'm a new v I'm a first time
- 56:01Speaker 7: and he didn't. And that just showed me that I
- 56:04Speaker 7: could be that, you know, I could just be me
- 56:07Speaker 7: and enjoy meeting new people.
- 56:09Speaker 6: And I mean and meeting him.
- 56:11Speaker 7: I got to know Donna, I got to know Carlton,
- 56:14Speaker 7: I got to know Nay, his sisters, and his mom
- 56:16Speaker 7: and his dad. I got indoctrinated into the family. And
- 56:21Speaker 7: so just because of him being who he is. And
- 56:25Speaker 7: so I think what we have done a horrible job
- 56:28Speaker 7: of is my daughter didn't have an opinion until probably eighteen,
- 56:37Speaker 7: because you only get an opinion if you're paying bills
- 56:41Speaker 7: or you've got responsibilities. Now I learned to follow that way,
- 56:47Speaker 7: so I can lead that way now. But all the
- 56:50Speaker 7: lessons I learned and learning to follow, I was hoping
- 56:53Speaker 7: to use on my brother. And it's so funny that
- 56:59Speaker 7: everybody used to say, you know, be your own man. Shannon,
- 57:01Speaker 7: stop trying to be like him. Shannon, Look, Shannon, you
- 57:04Speaker 7: your own guy man, live your own life.
- 57:06Speaker 6: And I it dawned on me. He didn't follow me.
- 57:12Speaker 7: I followed him because everything I did had his face
- 57:17Speaker 7: on it.
- 57:18Speaker 6: So I ain't leading him, following him.
- 57:21Speaker 7: And so you know, our relationship as brothers, we never fought,
- 57:27Speaker 7: never been in a fight. We talk every day, We
- 57:31Speaker 7: talk about most things. I got an older sister that
- 57:34Speaker 7: he'll talk about stuff with also that he doesn't talk
- 57:37Speaker 7: with me. But the thing is that the dynamic havn't changed.
- 57:40Speaker 7: Once you're in, you're in. You know you're my brother.
- 57:43Speaker 7: So if my brother didn't play in the NFL and
- 57:46Speaker 7: was a trash collector, guess what he'd be. A trash
- 57:48Speaker 7: collector driving a Mercedes living in an eight thousand square
- 57:51Speaker 7: foot house. If my life would have been the same
- 57:54Speaker 7: because I can't help MS or the American Cancer Society
- 57:59Speaker 7: or American Heart Association, I can't help them. If my
- 58:04Speaker 7: family is struggling, and I can do something about it.
- 58:06Speaker 7: So you know, family is most important. You know friends
- 58:09Speaker 7: are most important, most importantly though they're all done out
- 58:14Speaker 7: of love. So you got to make sure you know
- 58:16Speaker 7: I love Carlee, and Donna knows I love Carly, and
- 58:19Speaker 7: because I love carl Lee, I love Donna. So that
- 58:23Speaker 7: is the premise on who I am and how I
- 58:27Speaker 7: was raised, and that's why I could have fun playing football,
- 58:31Speaker 7: I could have fun doing TV. I tried to have
- 58:35Speaker 7: fun this weekend at the Hall of Fame. It's difficult.
- 58:38Speaker 7: It's hard, you know, because I never wanted this, so
- 58:42Speaker 7: I don't understand it yet. I don't understand what happened
- 58:45Speaker 7: to me.
- 58:45Speaker 6: But I'm learning.
- 58:47Speaker 7: Like I said, I took a day yesterday to kind
- 58:49Speaker 7: of go back over everything. But I'm learning how to
- 58:53Speaker 7: be a Hall of Famer. In my mind, there's not
- 58:55Speaker 7: a certain way you got to be. But I'm just
- 58:57Speaker 7: learning to accept, you know, the congratulations and the admiration
- 59:01Speaker 7: because it's not why I did it. But I don't
- 59:04Speaker 7: understand that. Carl and I had a conversation. I hope
- 59:08Speaker 7: I'm going over. Carl and I had had a conversation
- 59:18Speaker 7: about I never understood. We play a team sport. We're
- 59:23Speaker 7: four and twelve. Hollis is our team MVP. Did he
- 59:28Speaker 7: do something I did? As you know, if we play
- 59:32Speaker 7: a team sport, we went as a team. We lose
- 59:34Speaker 7: as a team, but you're the MVP. But I equated
- 59:39Speaker 7: that to like a participation trophy. You know, we're going
- 59:42Speaker 7: to try and build morale and spirit. So Carl, you
- 59:46Speaker 7: gave up four touchdowns, but you were the defensive MVP.
- 59:50Speaker 6: And you know, I never liked or understood that.
- 59:54Speaker 7: I'm like, guess what I'm doing, what I want to do,
- 59:56Speaker 7: and you're going to recognize me for doing what? Because
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: if you're recognizing me being four and twelve and being
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: in the same room with these other guys, what are
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: they thinking? What have you done to them? And so
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: I've never enjoyed recognition, and so I've actually tried to
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: shy away or stay away from it as much as possible.
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: But you know, this is one of those things that
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: I had no control over, didn't have a vote, and
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: I was dealing with eye issues that I really wanted
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: to get sight back in my right eye. I can't
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: see out of my right eye right now as I'm
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: sitting here, and so I never really got to.
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: The level of, wow, you know how big this is.
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: So hopefully one day, you know, I've asked God to
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: let me experience what it's supposed to feel like not
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: for everyone of us. But what is this supposed to
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: feel like? I want to I want to get that.
- 1:00:50Speaker 8: I think I think you know to your point, we
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: all here for a reason, as you articulated, and seeing
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: you and your brother on that stage that means the
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: world to a lot of us. I have a little brother, uh,
- 1:01:02Speaker 8: you know, talking about your story of how you came
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: up and just today expressing the mentality that you had
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: in order to just you know, move to where you
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: eventually moved to. I think you know this conversation, it
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: means a lot to a lot of people. And I
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: think there is a lot of lessons that even I'm
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: getting out of this, you know that I'm going to
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: apply to my career. So it's you may not see
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: it now, but I think again, just having that image
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: of you and your brother super impactful.
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: Means a lot to this cheeseheadstor all right, well.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Well we've accomplished, and so let me let me say
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: something to you, my brother okay, chasing you around and
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: you went back to the Pro Bowl, and I remember
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: those conversations.
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: I remember remember the fun.
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: We had, and.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: I never really saw it in the manner in which
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: you took it right like I just was, you know,
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: we just connected. But of every player that I've ever
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: met in my career from anywhere, the one guy that
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: mattered the most to me, the one guy that I
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: tried and in spite of your your standoffish way trying
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: to avoid me, I wanted this. And when I say
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: this this for you, I wanted that jacket for you.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: I wanted that jacket probably I won't say more than
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: anybody in your family, but anybody outside of your family brought.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: I wanted that and I wanted it because I knew.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: I knew.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: The guy that I chased around that number eighty four
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: in green, who who kept laughing, laying on the ground laughing,
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: was teaching me something about the game, how to have fun.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: And to me, I want you to know, you long
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: overdue for your jacket, bro, but you could wear your
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: own colored jacket because to me, you were one of
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: the best people I know.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: And you have been that to me for as long
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: as I can remember.
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: Yeah, and you guys have helped develop that part of
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: me because I do I stayed as far away from people.
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: As I can. You know, and especially you know I
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: don't do.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: I probably turned down twenty of these a week because
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: I don't want someone to hear something and go oh
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: he said that that uh uh Carl. He said that
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: Carl Lee was the best corner in the in the league,
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: you know, and and so now every and I found
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: this very interesting, and I said this to my brother.
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: I said, you know what's really funny. All you guys
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: do is you take a topic and you'll say something
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: crazy and then Hollis and his podcast or grab that
- 1:04:28Speaker 7: and they'll spend an hour talking about that that.
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: That you did the formula and Lisa and.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: I said, I said, bro, all y'all doing is y'all
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: are paying each other. Y'all just taking the five dollars
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: and you just pass it around. So but no, you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: when you around good people, good things happen to you.
- 1:04:51Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: And I've I've been fortunate enough to be able to
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: recognize or I should say my spear has been able
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: to recognize good people, and you cling onto them and
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: the rest of him you kind of let go.
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: That's why I wish you were at the party.
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: Saturday night, Tony Dungee came over and he was like,
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: where's Carl. I said, I think he had to uh uh.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: He had to give back. His son had something important
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: that was going on, so he had to get back.
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: And he was like, you know, just talking about you
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: as a player and as a person and you know,
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: coaching you. And I said to Tony, I said, you
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: ever tell him that I mean, because that's great and
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: I ain't gonna be able to say it to what
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: you said. And he was like, that's why I was
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: hoping that I got a chance to talk to him,
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: you know, today and or tonight, to be able to
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: you know, spend some time with him. But you know
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: that's the thing about life is you don't know. So
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: you got to take every advantage on telling Bruce Smith
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: Hall of Famer Bruce Smith is going through some things
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: health issues right now. And you know, we we facetimed
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: him on Wednesday and Thursday, we talked to him be
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: a speaker on Friday, because you know, the thing is
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: is athletes, the hardest thing to lose is your mind.
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: You may not be able to run and you may
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: not be able to jump, but your mind and if
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: something happens, you are there in your mind.
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: You're in your head by yourself.
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: And you know, we wanted to make sure, and we
- 1:06:20Speaker 7: want to make sure that Bruce understands that you ain't
- 1:06:24Speaker 7: going through this by yourself. You know, we've all adopted
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: prayers because I ask God every day since I heard
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: him going through this, if it gets heavy for him,
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: put it on me. Let me, let me carry some
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: of that, you know, let me. Let's let's help make
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: his load a little bit lighter. And so, you know,
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: relationships like I have what Carl and Donna. You know,
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: I call Carl and asked to speak to Donna. You know,
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: I call Carl and ask if I could take Donna
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: to the prompt. But you know, you know it's funny
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: that my relationship with most of my friends are we'll
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: do fifteen seconds of serious and forty five minutes the laughter.
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: And that's that's all your fault. That's been hard to
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: help this whole time.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: It's a good combination, though I like it.
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed the show.
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: Stir.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: We truly, truly, truly appreciate you coming on. And uh,
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: I'll make sure that you get a copy of the show.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: No no, no, no, no check check a copy of the show.
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: Give me a check. I'll work on that one. Congratulations again,
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Dad, thank you.
