- 2:00Speaker 1: a rant off of my chest with Bengals dot Com
- 2:03Speaker 1: editor Jeff Butch Hobson. All right, but you want to
- 2:07Speaker 1: start with a media rant in this podcast. When the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Bengals were still negotiating with Jamar and t numerous national
- 2:16Speaker 1: commentators kept saying that the Bengals would never get it
- 2:19Speaker 1: done because, as we've heard many times over the years,
- 2:22Speaker 1: the Bengals are too cheap. Then, before the ink was
- 2:26Speaker 1: even dry on the contract extensions, the narrative change. Do
- 2:29Speaker 1: they spend too much on two wide receivers or the
- 2:33Speaker 1: contracts aren't as good as they appear to be. Am
- 2:35Speaker 1: I being a total homer to think that the Bengals
- 2:39Speaker 1: are treated more harshly by the national media than any
- 2:43Speaker 1: team in the NFL.
- 2:45Speaker 2: You know, Hordy welcome. I guess we're both at home
- 2:48Speaker 2: because I just texted a national calumnist that I highly
- 2:55Speaker 2: regard and I find him very good. And he wrote
- 2:58Speaker 2: in his column that the Bengals have done. The Bengals
- 3:02Speaker 2: did nothing before Joe Burrow was here, and they did
- 3:06Speaker 2: these uncharacteristic deals. And I texted a guy said, look,
- 3:10Speaker 2: I love you, but in the fifteen years before Burrow
- 3:12Speaker 2: got here, they went to seven playoffs. They won four divisions,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and yes, they didn't want a playoff game. But also
- 3:19Speaker 2: in that stretch, they made Casson Palmer the highest paid player.
- 3:24Speaker 2: They made Willie Anderson the highest paid tackle twice in history.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They made AJ Green and Geno Watkins top three paid
- 3:32Speaker 2: players at their position. And you know, he wrote back, Oh,
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm not saying, you know, I think my final shot
- 3:40Speaker 2: was you know, I get it, but you know we
- 3:45Speaker 2: aren't the Browns and the Jets, which is where we
- 3:47Speaker 2: seem to be lumped. And I'm with you. It's these
- 3:51Speaker 2: national drive buys that I don't quite get. But then
- 3:54Speaker 2: he also, you know it can stend, it can extend
- 3:58Speaker 2: here too. I mean, I've been reading where this is
- 4:01Speaker 2: going to. This has to be a generational draft, and
- 4:06Speaker 2: it's important, especially now because of how the contracts are structured.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You know, with with you know, you've got to pay
- 4:14Speaker 2: younger guys. But I mean, you know, it's not an
- 4:17Speaker 2: AJ Green, Andy Dalton, Joe Burrow to Higgins draft. I mean,
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know, yeah, they got to add an edge and
- 4:24Speaker 2: they got an add an added defensive tackle. But this
- 4:28Speaker 2: is not a This is not a team riddled with holes.
- 4:33Speaker 3: You described a lot of their own players that they've
- 4:37Speaker 3: retained with big contracts, but they've also been one of
- 4:40Speaker 3: the more active teams in the NFL and pre agency
- 4:43Speaker 3: over the last five to ten years. We can run
- 4:45Speaker 3: off the list, DJ Reeder, Trey Hendrickson, Orlando Brown Junior,
- 4:48Speaker 3: et cetera, et cetera.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Now that they've given these gigantic.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Extensions to Joe Burrow last year, Jamar and t this year.
- 4:57Speaker 4: When will the word cheap go away? Doesn't do?
- 5:00Speaker 3: You have to win a Super Bowl before people start
- 5:03Speaker 3: calling stop calling you cheap.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think you win one and you're still going to
- 5:08Speaker 2: be cheap. I think these are these are tags that
- 5:11Speaker 2: unfortunately hang with you. But you know, if you win
- 5:16Speaker 2: a Super and but we were, But I saw these
- 5:19Speaker 2: stories two years ago. Hey, you can the Bengals are
- 5:23Speaker 2: proving you can win with a small but good scouting staff,
- 5:28Speaker 2: and you can win with uh, you know, reasonable free
- 5:32Speaker 2: agent deals, and you can win by drafting and developing.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You know, that was just two years ago. So I mean,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know what. Well, I know
- 5:41Speaker 2: what happened. They went nine and eight and nine and eight,
- 5:43Speaker 2: that's what happened. But I mean that's uh, that's still
- 5:47Speaker 2: that still shouldn't change the thing that they're that that
- 5:50Speaker 2: they've been successful in most NFL teams in this century.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I mean that's just the fact.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Well, I hope that winning a Super Bowl changes the
- 5:59Speaker 3: national narritive because I think they're going to win one
- 6:02Speaker 3: in the next few years.
- 6:03Speaker 4: And the Joe Burrow era.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I've maintained that since the day that they drafted him,
- 6:06Speaker 3: and I still believe it to be true, hopefully this year.
- 6:10Speaker 3: In Santa Clara, speaking of Joe Burrow, bis as far
- 6:13Speaker 3: as I can tell you are the only reporter that
- 6:16Speaker 3: talked to Joe after Jamar and T were extended.
- 6:19Speaker 5: How would you describe the conversation. H It was a
- 6:23Speaker 5: typical Borough conversation. It was to the point, and uh,
- 6:29Speaker 5: he was happy.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Uh when he said, I knew I was pretty confident
- 6:34Speaker 2: we were going to get Jama done, but I knew
- 6:36Speaker 2: T was going to be a big lift. And uh,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think we all agree with that, because you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: T was you know, can you sign both? You know,
- 6:45Speaker 2: how can you sign both these guys? How can you
- 6:46Speaker 2: make Jama the richest non quarterback and then and still
- 6:50Speaker 2: fit in another elite receiver? I think everybody one that
- 6:53Speaker 2: wandering about that, you know, particularly you know Joe, and
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think that's he was.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Uh.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And I wouldn't say he was relieved or anything like that,
- 7:02Speaker 2: but I think he thought. I think, you know, he
- 7:06Speaker 2: acted like he did, you know that night in Dallas,
- 7:10Speaker 2: that Monday night in Dallas. He you know, I'm confident
- 7:13Speaker 2: we can do it, and you know he's he's right,
- 7:17Speaker 2: you know, and he turned out to be right. But yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 2: he was. He was classic Joe. It was like talking
- 7:21Speaker 2: to him, you know, after the AFC championship game in
- 7:26Speaker 2: Kansas City, except there was no cigar.
- 7:30Speaker 4: There.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Mind have been a cigar later for all we know,
- 7:32Speaker 3: since they got those deals done. As I tell people
- 7:35Speaker 3: when they asked me about dealing with Joe, he's not
- 7:39Speaker 3: one that wants you to linger and chit chat. If
- 7:42Speaker 3: the topic is the Bengals, his teammates, whatever, he will
- 7:46Speaker 3: do his job and do it well and give you
- 7:49Speaker 3: what you need.
- 7:50Speaker 2: He was. He was pleasant, he said, Hobbes see seeing
- 7:54Speaker 2: in a couple of months. So but he was he is. Uh,
- 8:01Speaker 2: he has earned some well deserved aarron I but you
- 8:04Speaker 2: know he's gonna be you know, wherever he is, he's
- 8:05Speaker 2: going to be working and throwing too. I mean, that
- 8:07Speaker 2: guy's a The thing about Jamar and t and Jamar
- 8:11Speaker 2: and Joe, you know, they they're always going to be
- 8:14Speaker 2: joined at the hip, even when they have the bus
- 8:16Speaker 2: and can't you know they're going to have the bus
- 8:18Speaker 2: right next to each other. But there's they apposed the
- 8:21Speaker 2: game the same way. You know, they're just they're football aholics,
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know what I mean. I mean they're both Jim rats,
- 8:27Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And so it's uh, I
- 8:30Speaker 2: think I think that's why they're so close. It's just
- 8:32Speaker 2: because they they're wired the same way. And I got
- 8:34Speaker 2: that sense as Joe was, you know, leaving that you
- 8:38Speaker 2: know he was he was, he was like he was
- 8:41Speaker 2: going to work and he'll come back and he'll be
- 8:42Speaker 2: ready to go at the end of April or May
- 8:44Speaker 2: or whenever they come in.
- 8:46Speaker 3: All Right, when I run into Bengals fans, I've been
- 8:49Speaker 3: getting two big questions over and over again. Number One,
- 8:53Speaker 3: will they be able to keep Trey Hendrickson. Here's the
- 8:57Speaker 3: tricky part as I see it, You've got four edge
- 9:00Speaker 3: rushers making thirty four million dollars or more per year,
- 9:04Speaker 3: Miles Garrett, Denil Hunter, Max Crosby, and Nick Bosa.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Then there's this.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Huge drop off two guys making roughly twenty eight million
- 9:13Speaker 3: or a little bit less, including TJ. Watt, former NFL
- 9:17Speaker 3: Defensive Player of the Year, who's the same age as Trey.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I can understand Trey wanting to be paid like those
- 9:24Speaker 3: four guys making thirty four plus, but I don't think
- 9:28Speaker 3: it's unreasonable of the Bengals maybe try to negotiate something
- 9:33Speaker 3: closer to the TJ.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Watt number.
- 9:35Speaker 3: My hope is that the two parties can find something
- 9:40Speaker 3: that works for both of them. But it is kind
- 9:43Speaker 3: of strange that you have this huge six million dollars
- 9:46Speaker 3: between a handful of guys and another group of guys
- 9:50Speaker 3: who are great players.
- 9:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's pretty clear he wants to be here,
- 9:54Speaker 2: and it's pretty clear. I think these guys want them
- 9:57Speaker 2: back too. That's pretty clear. So I mean, I think
- 9:59Speaker 2: that's to I think the difficult tide is done. It's
- 10:03Speaker 2: just uh coming to that number, whatever that number is,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and it's uh, you know, Hendrickson is is you go
- 10:10Speaker 2: back and you have to put him? I mean greatest
- 10:13Speaker 2: free you know, if we're talking about free agents, greatest
- 10:16Speaker 2: free agent signing, right, I mean, I think DJ readers
- 10:20Speaker 2: pretty you know is I mean, is close. But here's
- 10:23Speaker 2: a man who, you know, the last two years, he's
- 10:27Speaker 2: he's had the most sacks of anybody in the league.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I mean, so, you know, I mean, I think I
- 10:32Speaker 2: think he wants to I think Trey wants to finish it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I think he wants to be in the Ring of Honor.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I think he I think he believes he's a mangalful life.
- 10:40Speaker 2: He's a very passionate guy, so that an emotional guy
- 10:45Speaker 2: and I just that's what makes him great. And you
- 10:48Speaker 2: just you've got to believe that you know something, something
- 10:52Speaker 2: is gonna you know, I hate this roll out, the
- 10:55Speaker 2: Raphael Devers Alex Brigman thing, but but you knows where's
- 11:03Speaker 2: Dever's going to play? Is Bregman going to switch positions?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Is it will work out, It will work out. And
- 11:09Speaker 2: the same thing with Higgins and with Higgins and Chase
- 11:13Speaker 2: it will work out, it will work out. And this
- 11:16Speaker 2: is with Hendrickson. I'm going to drop the Deva's Bregman
- 11:20Speaker 2: line here. It's going to work out. I don't know how,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but I mean, I think it's going to work out
- 11:24Speaker 2: where both sides can be happy.
- 11:28Speaker 3: A lot of people question how wise it is to
- 11:31Speaker 3: pay a pass rusher who's going to be thirty one
- 11:34Speaker 3: at some point this season, and I get it, it's
- 11:37Speaker 3: fair to bring that up. The thing that I would
- 11:40Speaker 3: stay about Trey is that he's playing his best football
- 11:43Speaker 3: ever at his current age seventeen and a half sacks
- 11:47Speaker 3: each of the last two years. I'm sure there's going
- 11:49Speaker 3: to be some drop off that's natural, but I don't
- 11:54Speaker 3: think he's going to drop off the cliff. And if
- 11:57Speaker 3: these assemblance of his current level in the next two
- 12:02Speaker 3: or three years, however long an extension would be, that's
- 12:06Speaker 3: still really good to help you win the AFC North
- 12:10Speaker 3: and contend for a Super Bowl title.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the things that make him great, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 2: I mean that that first step is that is that?
- 12:18Speaker 2: Is that gonna?
- 12:19Speaker 3: Is it?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Does that? Wayne? You know? Does that Wayne? Through time?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Or I mean I think a lot of that is
- 12:23Speaker 2: knowing your opponent, knowing how they're playing you, anticipating the
- 12:27Speaker 2: snap count. You know. I'm not sure that stuff, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 2: leaves you when you hit a wall, you know what
- 12:33Speaker 2: I mean? And uh so, I think plus it's is
- 12:37Speaker 2: you know, Tray Hendrickson is going to be really is
- 12:40Speaker 2: going to be relentless and anything he does, whether he's
- 12:43Speaker 2: whether he's thirty or ninety, and he'll always have that.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And that's the number one part of his game. Is
- 12:50Speaker 2: he never stops.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not going away. I don't see him playing
- 12:54Speaker 3: until least ninety. But we'll take him for a few
- 12:57Speaker 3: more years, that's for sure, all Right. The second question,
- 13:00Speaker 3: and I'm getting over and over from Bengals fans, as
- 13:02Speaker 3: will they sign another veteran guard? They signed Lucas Patrick.
- 13:07Speaker 3: They'll be thirty two in July. It's got sixty four
- 13:10Speaker 3: careers starts under his belt. You had a great stat
- 13:12Speaker 3: in one of the things you wrote on Bengals dot Com.
- 13:15Speaker 3: He has not given up a sack in his last
- 13:18Speaker 3: eight hundred and ninety three patch blocking snaps, which is
- 13:21Speaker 3: a great stat.
- 13:23Speaker 4: If nothing else, he adds great veteran.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Depth, But there are still guys out there who have
- 13:30Speaker 3: a better track record than he does.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Branded Sheriff has been on.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Multi time pro bowler Will Hernandez was really good before
- 13:37Speaker 3: he suffered a knee injury. Do you think another guard
- 13:41Speaker 3: is coming or do you think this is the group
- 13:44Speaker 3: they're going to have with the possibility of adding a
- 13:47Speaker 3: draft pick to compete for a starting spot.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Well, with these two deals, and you know, and with
- 13:54Speaker 2: Hendrickson getting a raise, you know that that number can't
- 13:59Speaker 2: be a big number, you know. And I do think
- 14:03Speaker 2: a veteran god is coming. But my sense will come
- 14:06Speaker 2: after the draft, you know. For all we know they'll
- 14:09Speaker 2: draft two guys, you know. I mean, I'm not sure.
- 14:12Speaker 2: We'll see what the draft, you know, We'll see what
- 14:14Speaker 2: the draft gives them, and then I think maybe if
- 14:17Speaker 2: they feel like they got to go back. You know.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think in the market that they that they would
- 14:22Speaker 2: and they might get one of those guys at the
- 14:25Speaker 2: at a pretty good price, you know, And I think
- 14:27Speaker 2: that's how you have to that's how they have to
- 14:29Speaker 2: approach it. I mean, I mean, people can you know,
- 14:32Speaker 2: moan all they want about, Oh, they should have structured
- 14:35Speaker 2: it so you know, they could have got more free
- 14:39Speaker 2: agents this trip. Well, A, I don't think they were
- 14:41Speaker 2: infatuated by the crop of free agents, and B you're
- 14:45Speaker 2: not going to be saying that in twenty twenty six
- 14:47Speaker 2: when you got to cut one of them, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 2: because they're tap number ballooned in the out years, because
- 14:54Speaker 2: you wanted to do something now. So I think that
- 15:00Speaker 2: and I think they knew that when they I think,
- 15:02Speaker 2: you know, this has been part of the plan when
- 15:05Speaker 2: they when they scouted this free agency class and they
- 15:09Speaker 2: scouted the draft class. And so from what I understand,
- 15:13Speaker 2: it's pretty good on guards. You know, there's some there's
- 15:15Speaker 2: some you know, some pretty good guard prospects. So yeah,
- 15:18Speaker 2: I would expect another veteran to come in. But I'm
- 15:21Speaker 2: thinking maybe maybe after the draft.
- 15:24Speaker 3: The Jamar and t extensions obviously commanded most of the attention,
- 15:27Speaker 3: and for good reason, But those are not the only
- 15:29Speaker 3: free agency moves that they've made. Internally, they hold onto
- 15:33Speaker 3: Joseph O's side, b J Hill, Cam Sample, Mike Kasiki,
- 15:36Speaker 3: Cody Ford, and some others UH free agents from other teams.
- 15:40Speaker 4: We mentioned Lucas Patrick.
- 15:41Speaker 3: They're bringing in linebacker Orrin Berks, defensive tackle TJ. Slayton,
- 15:45Speaker 3: some I J. P. Ryan is back and we're happy
- 15:48Speaker 3: to have him back on the roster. What's the best
- 15:51Speaker 3: move in your opinion of those other moves aside from
- 15:54Speaker 3: Jamar and Tink.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I think it's got to be Koseki. But I also
- 16:00Speaker 2: so would I think if I could just say something
- 16:02Speaker 2: about Osai and Sample, I think the UH, the coaches,
- 16:09Speaker 2: the new coaches. I think that you know, the the scouts,
- 16:13Speaker 2: the in the front office listened to the new coaches,
- 16:16Speaker 2: and when they watch tape, they they're impressed with Joseph Osai,
- 16:20Speaker 2: They're impressed with Cam Sample. So you never get any
- 16:23Speaker 2: credit for in free agency when you sign your own
- 16:26Speaker 2: guy back in free agency, you don't get credit for that.
- 16:29Speaker 4: But in lessons like at Jamar and t that's a
- 16:32Speaker 4: different level.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Right, But you know, you know, but Osai you know,
- 16:36Speaker 2: to me, that's a good getting free agency because he
- 16:39Speaker 2: finished the season terrific. And I and people forget this,
- 16:42Speaker 2: but in twenty twenty two, and I think this is
- 16:44Speaker 2: what a guy like Jerry Montgomery is looking at and
- 16:46Speaker 2: Al Golden is looking at on tape, they're looking at uh.
- 16:50Speaker 2: You know that last stretch of twenty twenty two, he
- 16:52Speaker 2: was Joseph Osai was tremendous, and he was playing with
- 16:56Speaker 2: a with a torn labram who was playing hurt. He
- 16:59Speaker 2: played the best ball of his career. And I think
- 17:02Speaker 2: there's a sense that Joseph you can do a lot
- 17:04Speaker 2: with Joseph OSII. That the that he'll be the beneficiary
- 17:08Speaker 2: of a new scheme and and get a breath of
- 17:10Speaker 2: fresh air with a new staff. That's not saying anything
- 17:13Speaker 2: about the old staff, but you know how it is.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Get to get you get a uh, get a new situation,
- 17:20Speaker 2: you get revived a little bit. I mean, I remember,
- 17:22Speaker 2: you know, the first third down of the Buffalo playoff
- 17:25Speaker 2: game in the snow, Joseph Osai on third and six
- 17:28Speaker 2: is rushing inside and question was right in Josh Allen's face.
- 17:33Speaker 2: The force and the completion and kind of set the tone. Well,
- 17:35Speaker 2: I didn't see him line up inside very much last year.
- 17:39Speaker 2: You know, maybe this is something he can do. So
- 17:42Speaker 2: you know, I think the second's the best move other
- 17:45Speaker 2: than team in jama But you know, to get a
- 17:49Speaker 2: guy like Sample is the most versatile defensive lineman. I
- 17:53Speaker 2: mean I talked to two people. I've talked a couple
- 17:55Speaker 2: of people said the two biggest injuries for them last
- 18:00Speaker 2: year with the injury to Dak Still in the injury
- 18:01Speaker 2: to Camp Sample, the two most visatle defensive players. So
- 18:05Speaker 2: I think Sample is a good get too.
- 18:07Speaker 4: I think TJ.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Slayton, for me, is the greatest pickup they've made, certainly
- 18:13Speaker 3: from another team. That's the guy that they've desperately missed,
- 18:19Speaker 3: just that gigantic and movable guy in the middle of
- 18:21Speaker 3: the defensive line. The fact that he's already played for
- 18:24Speaker 3: Jerry Montgomery, so Jerry knows what he's getting, knows how
- 18:27Speaker 3: to use him. I just think you can't overestimate the
- 18:32Speaker 3: importance of getting bigger inside on defense.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I agree, And he's a run stopper and you got
- 18:38Speaker 2: to stop the run and obviously to use them mantra
- 18:42Speaker 2: because it's it's you have to play that style of ball.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Zach said it when he hired Al. You know, he
- 18:48Speaker 2: wanted a guy familiar with the division. I think also too,
- 18:51Speaker 2: a guy you're glad that you know. Don't don't don't
- 18:54Speaker 2: you can't overestimate some ijp Ryan coming back. I mean,
- 18:58Speaker 2: you go back and you look back at you know,
- 19:00Speaker 2: thanks to Michael Hull our website, guy's been posting all
- 19:03Speaker 2: these videos of Samajia and you remember, the memories come
- 19:06Speaker 2: flooding back, just how much and good he was, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 2: and then you know, so that's that's something. You know,
- 19:15Speaker 2: Now you can give Chase Brown a breather, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 2: give him a breather for a drive, give him a
- 19:20Speaker 2: breather for you know, I mean, Samaji maybe the best
- 19:23Speaker 2: third down back in the game when it comes to blocking.
- 19:26Speaker 2: So don't underice to make that that's a that's a
- 19:29Speaker 2: that's a great pick up. The two guys they pick
- 19:31Speaker 2: up between between him and Patrick. You know, people talk about, oh,
- 19:35Speaker 2: you got to protect Burrow, Well that's that's yeah, you
- 19:38Speaker 2: got to go get a couple of guards, which you
- 19:39Speaker 2: know what samaj and Patrick they protect the quarterback.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Or to come with Jeff Hobson, including our draft discussion.
- 19:48Speaker 1: But first, a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast
- 19:51Speaker 1: is brought to you by pay Corps, Proud to be
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Bengals Official HR software provider, by Alta Fiber future

- 20:07Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Is there another
- 20:12Speaker 1: position where you anticipate don't pick up a veteran free agent?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Maybe after the draft? Cornerback, linebacker, whatever.
- 20:20Speaker 2: That's a good question. I think it's all depends who's there.
- 20:23Speaker 2: I think linebacker is definitely. I think that's definitely a
- 20:26Speaker 2: spot that they want to You know, they haven't drafted
- 20:29Speaker 2: the linebacker in five years. Uh the last the last
- 20:32Speaker 2: backer they drafted was was, you know, Marcus Bailey the
- 20:35Speaker 2: seventh round of that twenty twenty draft where they drafted
- 20:38Speaker 2: Logan Wilson and a Keen Davis gab They haven't drafted
- 20:40Speaker 2: a guy since, so that's obviously going to be I
- 20:42Speaker 2: think they'll probably get one there in the draft, but
- 20:45Speaker 2: I think they'll also be looking on the in the
- 20:47Speaker 2: on the market for you know, for something else. You know, cornerback,
- 20:51Speaker 2: I just don't you know, everybody wants a veteran cornerback
- 20:56Speaker 2: and I'm not sure why. I mean, I think they're
- 20:58Speaker 2: I think they're blessed at corner back. I think it's
- 21:00Speaker 2: their deepest, best position on defense, and it's one of
- 21:03Speaker 2: the strongest of the team with with Kay what Brett,
- 21:07Speaker 2: DJ Turner, Dax who.
- 21:08Speaker 3: I think they've got four that they like. You mentioned three.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I'm throwing fake Newton that gives you four. But it's
- 21:16Speaker 3: the position where guys tend to get hurt the most.
- 21:18Speaker 3: They're little guys tackling big guys, running up and down
- 21:21Speaker 3: the field on every play. I just I don't think
- 21:24Speaker 3: you can have enough. I like the guys they have,
- 21:26Speaker 3: I just don't think he can have enough.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I like Ivy, you know, I think Ivy's another guy
- 21:30Speaker 2: can a good point throwing that. But you're right, I mean,
- 21:33Speaker 2: if they can, you know, if they can, uh. I
- 21:35Speaker 2: also like you know, anybody you know, uh, Michael Wilson
- 21:38Speaker 2: is also they kept Marco Wilson you know played well,
- 21:41Speaker 2: you know, so maybe you know to me, they're they're all.
- 21:44Speaker 2: But you know, but if you see you know what
- 21:45Speaker 2: I mean, if there's a guy out there on on
- 21:47Speaker 2: on May sixth and you say, my god, he's still there,
- 21:50Speaker 2: you know, then I could see him doing something. But uh,
- 21:54Speaker 2: I think something that this new regime on defense, I
- 21:57Speaker 2: think they're going to play young guys, you know what
- 22:00Speaker 2: I mean. I don't think. I think And Duke said
- 22:02Speaker 2: this at the Seena Bowl. When I asked him at
- 22:04Speaker 2: the Seena Bol he said, you know, he asked, he
- 22:05Speaker 2: was second against himself. Did I hang on to that
- 22:08Speaker 2: Super Bowl defense too long? You know? So I think
- 22:12Speaker 2: there's I'm not sure there's going to be a lot
- 22:16Speaker 2: of veteran guys in depth positions.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you need young legs at corner. For every Terrence
- 22:23Speaker 3: Newman who plays until a very older age, there are
- 22:27Speaker 3: ten guys that suddenly just fall off the cliff at
- 22:31Speaker 3: that position. To me, much more than defensive end or
- 22:33Speaker 3: edge rusher. I think corners take it takes young.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Legs, I think. So.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I think corner and wide receiver all. You know. I mean,
- 22:42Speaker 2: you know this sport. You've been watching the league long
- 22:44Speaker 2: enough you they show up one year and it's, oh
- 22:46Speaker 2: my god, they're not the you know what I mean,
- 22:48Speaker 2: it's almost like it seems quick, you know, those two positions.
- 22:53Speaker 3: All right, Let's take a closer look at the draft.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I looked at sixteen recent mock drafts from prominent outlets.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Twelve of the sixteen have the Bengals taking a defensive lineman,
- 23:06Speaker 3: whether it's a tackle or an edge rusher. The other
- 23:09Speaker 3: four positions of these sixteen mock drafts one corner, one safety,
- 23:13Speaker 3: one guard, one tight end.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I really don't see the tight end.
- 23:16Speaker 3: But in any case, twelve out of sixteen, that's seventy
- 23:19Speaker 3: five percent.
- 23:20Speaker 4: So let me ask the question this way.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Is it's seventy five percent lightly that the seventeenth pick
- 23:26Speaker 3: in the draft will be either a defensive tackle or
- 23:29Speaker 3: defensive end.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would say I would say so
- 23:33Speaker 2: just because A that's the need and B that's where
- 23:36Speaker 2: the strength of the draft is. But you know, I
- 23:39Speaker 2: and you know they're I mean, if you notice, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 2: the higher the pick in the first round, the bigger
- 23:46Speaker 2: the guy, you know what I mean, the bigger it's
- 23:49Speaker 2: a it's a defensive you know, it's usually an you know,
- 23:53Speaker 2: it's usually a tackle. But you know, the last you know,
- 23:56Speaker 2: now they haven't taken a defensive tackle in the first
- 23:58Speaker 2: round since they took dead well first overall before you
- 24:02Speaker 2: were born voting, Well, no, I guess you were at Fox.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I guess you were at Fox, right, which is kind
- 24:08Speaker 2: of like before you were born.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I had hair.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I do think offensive tackle and defense and
- 24:18Speaker 2: edge they've drafted that last. I mean, it just seems
- 24:21Speaker 2: like the big guys, the bigger they you know, the lower,
- 24:25Speaker 2: you know, the higher to pick, the bigger they go.
- 24:27Speaker 2: But you know, I still like to sit now. I
- 24:29Speaker 2: took the safety from South Carolina, but that's probably not
- 24:33Speaker 2: I just kind of did it to obviously be it,
- 24:36Speaker 2: you know, kind of throw another wrinkle into it because
- 24:39Speaker 2: to pick the my mock draft before I picked Walter Nolan.
- 24:43Speaker 2: To me, this is looking like and I really do
- 24:45Speaker 2: like the South Carolina safety because I think, you know,
- 24:49Speaker 2: let's let's be afc north about this. Let's match Kyle
- 24:52Speaker 2: Hamilton from Baltimore. And I'm sorry I can't pronounce the
- 24:56Speaker 2: young man's name from South Carolina and more away, I
- 24:59Speaker 2: am a war why I screwed that up. But match
- 25:03Speaker 2: Kyle Hamilton, you know what I mean. Match Mike Fitzpatrick,
- 25:08Speaker 2: you know what I mean. But to me, it's almost
- 25:11Speaker 2: it's this could be lining up really well for a
- 25:15Speaker 2: trade down because they've only got six picks. To me,
- 25:18Speaker 2: it'd be a great opportunity to pick up an extra one.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And if you drop down five six slots probably DNA
- 25:25Speaker 2: get it. You're still going to get a tackle in
- 25:26Speaker 2: an edge. Now there might be a guy you really
- 25:28Speaker 2: love it. If there's a guy you really love at seventeen,
- 25:31Speaker 2: you know, don't trade it. But you know, if there's
- 25:34Speaker 2: three four guys there and you can get an extra
- 25:36Speaker 2: pick out of it, and you know, I mean, I
- 25:39Speaker 2: think that's probably something they get to look out. I
- 25:42Speaker 2: guess the last time they had the seventeenth pick, they
- 25:45Speaker 2: also had the twenty first pick and they traded down
- 25:48Speaker 2: to they traded down to twenty seven, so but I
- 25:52Speaker 2: don't know they haven't traded that. I think that's the
- 25:53Speaker 2: last time they traded down in the first round, so
- 25:56Speaker 2: maybe it's time.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Well I can't remember the last time they only had
- 26:00Speaker 3: six picks, so it makes sense to trade down if
- 26:04Speaker 3: you can and pick up another decent pick. You'd probably
- 26:07Speaker 3: want to do it in the first three rounds. If possible,
- 26:11Speaker 3: so that the that you get in exchange is and
- 26:13Speaker 3: you know, at the end of the seventh round, you
- 26:16Speaker 3: got to have another team that wants to move up.
- 26:17Speaker 4: But yeah, I think if they can trade.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Down and get another middle of the draft type pick
- 26:25Speaker 3: and still have plenty of people on the board that
- 26:28Speaker 3: they like, I think they would do it.
- 26:29Speaker 4: I think you got to do it.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I mean, there's going to be a player at seventeen
- 26:33Speaker 2: that you didn't think was going to be there. You know,
- 26:36Speaker 2: you can say, oh, you know who, who could Tyler
- 26:40Speaker 2: Warren fall? Could uh you know, could one of those
- 26:44Speaker 2: tackles fall you know, uh that? Then then you could
- 26:48Speaker 2: see a club say, oh, you know, then you could
- 26:49Speaker 2: see a club trying to trying to move up if
- 26:52Speaker 2: there's a if there's that slide that you know, maybe
- 26:57Speaker 2: you know, maybe that's where somebody jumps up to get
- 26:59Speaker 2: a quarterback. If I mean, if they're antsy.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Let's hope, because I would love for the Bengals to
- 27:05Speaker 3: be in that position.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and as as long as they get a good player,
- 27:09Speaker 2: you know, and I think they you know, and they'll
- 27:12Speaker 2: make that call, you know. And it looks to me
- 27:14Speaker 2: like when I did it and I believe me. It's
- 27:17Speaker 2: that that's as raw as it gets when you're talking
- 27:19Speaker 2: to media representatives. You know, that's that that's certainly no guarantee.
- 27:26Speaker 2: But this last one that I did, that I published
- 27:29Speaker 2: on this last Tuesday. You know, Nolan was there, Uh,
- 27:35Speaker 2: you had the three Edges were there, Mike Green who
- 27:39Speaker 2: I know. I think Paul Danner Jr. Took in his
- 27:41Speaker 2: mock the edge from Marshall. You know, so there were
- 27:45Speaker 2: there were there were like three or four five guys
- 27:48Speaker 2: who would be great fits.
- 27:50Speaker 3: You are headed to the owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida,
- 27:53Speaker 3: gets underway on Sunday.
- 27:54Speaker 4: What will you have your eye on at the owners meetings?
- 27:59Speaker 2: Well, I I there's not a lot of interesting rule changes.
- 28:05Speaker 2: You know, usually it got it. You know last year
- 28:07Speaker 2: that was big. That was the biggest change in probably
- 28:09Speaker 2: fifty years. All eyes were on that. But I'm you know,
- 28:15Speaker 2: I think it's more kind of internal. You know, we
- 28:19Speaker 2: get another shot at Zach, so it kind of be
- 28:21Speaker 2: the first time we talked to Zach in depth at
- 28:23Speaker 2: the AFC Coaches Media Breakfast. You know, I also think
- 28:29Speaker 2: too that the uh something that I kind of want
- 28:33Speaker 2: to maybe ask some ask some other coaches is their
- 28:37Speaker 2: view of the Bengals, And that's what I want. I
- 28:41Speaker 2: want to ask, and I'll probably try to ram out
- 28:44Speaker 2: a story like that, but I want to talk to
- 28:45Speaker 2: a guy like Mark Gannis, who's a pretty connected financial
- 28:51Speaker 2: guy with the league, runs his own company. He's always
- 28:53Speaker 2: the owners always invite him down. He's kind of a
- 28:56Speaker 2: consultant for the league, you know. I want to talk
- 28:59Speaker 2: to some other gm I want to just get their
- 29:01Speaker 2: view on the Bengals, because you know, you get so
- 29:04Speaker 2: much into a you get so much into a bubble.
- 29:07Speaker 2: You're reading certain people, You're always reading certain things, and
- 29:10Speaker 2: you gotta you know, they call it the echo chamber.
- 29:13Speaker 2: So I want to maybe step out of the echo chamber,
- 29:16Speaker 2: kind of work the lobby a little bit, you know,
- 29:19Speaker 2: ask some ask some people who you know, some executives
- 29:23Speaker 2: around the league. I want to the guy from Netflix
- 29:26Speaker 2: is going to be there and I want to get him,
- 29:29Speaker 2: you know, talking about hide knocks and borrow and just
- 29:31Speaker 2: kind of the allure of the Bengals. I think the
- 29:33Speaker 2: Bengals are very I wanted to talk to some league
- 29:36Speaker 2: people too, in the marketing about about the popularity of
- 29:39Speaker 2: this club. Bengals hugely popular, you know. I mean we
- 29:44Speaker 2: see it the last two years they've come out with
- 29:47Speaker 2: a TV schedule, you know, and I you know, probably
- 29:51Speaker 2: take a temperature on if they're going to get a
- 29:53Speaker 2: if they're going to get an international game or not. So,
- 29:56Speaker 2: but that's kind of what I'm going to look at,
- 29:57Speaker 2: Hordy long story kind of made a short story along there.
- 30:01Speaker 2: But just see what the rest of the league is
- 30:03Speaker 2: thinking about this club.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Were you surprised that Burrow agreed to do the Quarterback
- 30:08Speaker 3: series on Netflix.
- 30:10Speaker 2: I'm never surprised with joe Leie Burrow. I think I
- 30:16Speaker 2: think he's although we gotta go. We gotta remember what
- 30:18Speaker 2: he said, you had to. Yeah, when we asked him
- 30:21Speaker 2: the last time about this, he said, well no, We
- 30:24Speaker 2: asked him if he was gonna watch it, right, and
- 30:26Speaker 2: he said, no, I'm not gonna watch it, I think
- 30:28Speaker 2: he said, and somebody said, well why not? He said, well,
- 30:31Speaker 2: would you guys.
- 30:32Speaker 6: Watch a documentary on Hobson And you said absolutely, Ill
- 30:37Speaker 6: it was one of the great But uh so we're
- 30:39Speaker 6: gonna have to ask him about We're gonna have to.
- 30:42Speaker 6: I wasn't thinking on my I wasn't thinking on my
- 30:44Speaker 6: feet though, although I don't know if it was public
- 30:47Speaker 6: when I talked to him, so I.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Missed a great opportunity to ask him about that. But now,
- 30:52Speaker 2: you know, I think I don't know. I think Joe
- 30:54Speaker 2: gets it too. I mean I think, you know, I
- 30:56Speaker 2: don't know. I think he knows. He probably figured well,
- 30:59Speaker 2: if I don't do it now, they're just going to
- 31:00Speaker 2: keep hammering me. So get it out. You know, he's
- 31:02Speaker 2: probably one of these guys, Hey, let's get it out
- 31:05Speaker 2: of the way. I mean, he's so efficient the way
- 31:07Speaker 2: he does things. Maybe you just think him a Look,
- 31:10Speaker 2: they're going to be killing me for the next five
- 31:11Speaker 2: years to get me on that. Let's just nip it
- 31:13Speaker 2: in the bud and you do it.
- 31:15Speaker 3: I can't wait to watch the Netflix series Scribe, featuring
- 31:19Speaker 3: you and two other NFL reporters.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Would that be anybody who watched that would have to
- 31:28Speaker 2: be immediately committed.
- 31:32Speaker 3: All right, you're hitting the road today, So I want
- 31:35Speaker 3: to wrap this up with one final topic, and it's
- 31:38Speaker 3: something near and dear to your heart. We are announcing
- 31:41Speaker 3: today the date of the inaugural Jack Hobson Memorial Golf Classic.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Right, thank you, Hordy for popping that out. We'll see
- 31:53Speaker 2: if his grandfather is able to put it together. I
- 31:55Speaker 2: hope it's not a the Jeff Fox and first Danuel Ago,
- 32:00Speaker 2: but uh, I think, uh no, it is. You know,
- 32:04Speaker 2: I think you guys know, Jack Hobson is my grandson
- 32:08Speaker 2: who passed away after twenty nine days of a congenital
- 32:12Speaker 2: hip defect. And so just trying to raise some money.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Get awareness out there too. I think that's a big thing,
- 32:18Speaker 2: is uh, get screenings, you know, try to you know,
- 32:22Speaker 2: prenatal care so important. Get screenings, particularly if there's uh
- 32:27Speaker 2: if that, if that, you know, I have problems running
- 32:30Speaker 2: your family, and you know, just get the awareness out
- 32:33Speaker 2: have have have a great time. Remember I know my
- 32:36Speaker 2: uh son whenever we have a you know, whenever he's visiting, uh,
- 32:42Speaker 2: you know, whenever he's visiting with Anita and I and
- 32:45Speaker 2: we were going to have dinner, and he'll always you know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: we'll do a toast to Jack. So this this one
- 32:51Speaker 2: morning is going to be you know too, Jack, and
- 32:54Speaker 2: be great to have guys like yourself there. Get his uh,
- 32:58Speaker 2: get get all my full We'll see how many friends
- 33:01Speaker 2: I have. I don't think they have that many, but
- 33:02Speaker 2: we've got to fill a field of seventy two and
- 33:05Speaker 2: legendary and run would love to have you so May
- 33:08Speaker 2: thirtieth eight am, and that would be uh. I appreciate that, Ordy,
- 33:13Speaker 2: for you given us giving us a shout out.
- 33:16Speaker 4: May thirtieth eight in the morning.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Legendary Run, Great Golf Course, Jack Hopson Memorial Golf Classic.
- 33:24Speaker 4: More information to.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Come on how you can sign up and what it's
- 33:27Speaker 3: going to cost, etc. But I'm putting that on my
- 33:30Speaker 3: calendar right now. I will be at the inaugural Jack.
- 33:34Speaker 2: That's beautiful. That's a great. Now, we've got to have
- 33:36Speaker 2: a great MC there. You won't have to work, Ordy.
- 33:38Speaker 2: You won't have to work this one because the great
- 33:40Speaker 2: Ed Stutto, who is doubling as my director of sponsorship,
- 33:44Speaker 2: and the mc rodney Dangerfield comes the legendary. So if
- 33:50Speaker 2: you wear a hat, he'll say, hey, where'd you get
- 33:52Speaker 2: that hat?
- 33:54Speaker 4: You'll be wearing a hat.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I know that that's correct.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Hey, I really appreciate your time. I asked you to
- 34:00Speaker 4: do this on short notice and you came through. Enjoy
- 34:02Speaker 4: the owner's meetings, and I'll look forward.
- 34:04Speaker 2: To seeing you soon for Dan board anything.
- 34:07Speaker 4: See us soon, Fordy.
