- 0:05The business of bickering. Beckham's.
- 0:08Welcome back to the Mark and Pete, where we specialized in
- 0:11asking the question that modern culture avoids at all costs, and
- 0:15that is what is actually appropriate.
- 0:19This week we look at the Beckham's this is Mark and
- 0:24Pete's two blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:27Now here's our first thought. When families have fights or
- 0:32moods where the daughter and son colludes and the father's bad
- 0:37attitudes, it becomes a mother of all.
- 0:40Feuds. Oh yes.
- 0:42Could you believe it? Yes, Brooklyn Peltz Beckham has
- 0:45said she does not want to reconcile with his family.
- 0:49Why? Well this is basically fuelling
- 0:53the whole of the media environment where unfortunately
- 0:57now we're seeing that Brooklyn is falling out with his parents,
- 1:01Sir David Beckham and Lady Beckham.
- 1:04Now Mr. Pete, whilst I know the Beckham's only need to just
- 1:08simply appear in front of a camera and everybody stops and
- 1:11listens, is this really a serious situation where Brooklyn
- 1:16has sort of lost favour and will not reconcile with his parents?
- 1:20Or is this just simply another brand media stunt just to keep
- 1:23their name in the media? Well, that's always possible,
- 1:29isn't it? The whole thing has been taken
- 1:31out of out of context and then used.
- 1:35It's a whole people are interested in this, let's just
- 1:37go for it. It could be the the whole thing
- 1:40was deliberate. It does play into a real problem
- 1:43that happens when someone is a comedian or a singer or in in,
- 1:49in Victoria Beckham's case, a celebrity.
- 1:54Then you can't you, you end up always being the celebrity or
- 1:58and you can't let it go. So in a public situation like
- 2:01that, you end up needing to be the centre of attention.
- 2:06It it could be that, that's that that's true.
- 2:09But Even so, it's it's, it's, it's hardly a serious matter, is
- 2:13it? It's a bit of a joke, yeah.
- 2:15Well, maybe we should clarify what's going on here.
- 2:17Yeah. But yes, let's run down the
- 2:19details for us, Mark. Well, Brooklyn, Pats Beckham had
- 2:23a wedding. Yes, it was a wedding.
- 2:26That was something that was meant to be celebrated with his
- 2:30new heiress, Nicola Peltz. Now, the the crucial thing here
- 2:36is, is that Nicola Peltz comes from a very wealthy family.
- 2:39She is a very wealthy individual in herself.
- 2:42But look, let's get to two people coming together at a
- 2:45wedding. What seemed to happen was as the
- 2:48DJ for the wedding was calling out the most beautiful woman in
- 2:52the room to come and dance with, of course, the groom.
- 2:56Unfortunately, what the media has recited and basically
- 3:00claimed is that Lady Beckham suddenly decided to spring into
- 3:05action with a bit of Dirty Dancing, essentially
- 3:09inappropriately in front of everyone, leaving unfortunately
- 3:13the bride looking rather shameful, uncomfortable and
- 3:16humiliated. How could this possibly happen?
- 3:20Well, I wonder, was it scripted? Who knows?
- 3:23But the fact is, is that there are some people who are actually
- 3:25saying genuinely that this was a really awkward moment and it
- 3:28should never have happened. Brooklyn has taken offence.
- 3:31He's gone into the media and basically his wife doesn't want
- 3:35to have anything to do with David Beckham or Victoria
- 3:39Beckham in particular. And that's really what's been
- 3:41seems to be happening. Now, the devil's in the detail
- 3:44here, folks, because, well, some people will say, well, it was
- 3:48slightly awkward, but at the end of the day, people do strange
- 3:51things at weddings. Well, they might do, but I I
- 3:55think it's gone a little bit further than that because
- 3:58basically Brooklyn has gone out really starting to cite some
- 4:02other nasty family feuds and seems to be escalating this now.
- 4:08Is this a bit of naivety on behalf of Brooklyn, or is it
- 4:12just simply a bit of gameplay with the media?
- 4:15Well, my take on it is that it's a bit of both.
- 4:19I mean, I think that it genuinely happened, but that
- 4:21it's it's a great way of getting out of getting yourself out in
- 4:24the news again. And if you do that and you allow
- 4:28your your media team to spin it out, then the participants can
- 4:34get genuinely upset. So, you know, it's spins out of
- 4:37control. Now, First Corinthians 14 verse
- 4:3914, just to quote a Bible verse says let all things be done
- 4:42decently and in order. And if they just followed that,
- 4:46they wouldn't have had all this trouble.
- 4:48I mean, it's, it's, even if it is supposedly just brand, just a
- 4:55brand publicity stunt if you like.
- 4:59It's still, it looks bad, especially for the for the the
- 5:04bride, because she should be the centre of attention and it's
- 5:07made Victoria reckon the centre of attention.
- 5:11Now. I mean, I, I haven't looked
- 5:14closely at Victoria Beckham and the bride next to each other, so
- 5:18I'm not going to judge on which is the more beautiful.
- 5:22But you know, it's that's irrelevant at a wedding.
- 5:25The bride is the most beautiful by definition, You know, it
- 5:29doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what their
- 5:30opinions are. Now, when I used to officiate at
- 5:34weddings, having said to you everything should be done
- 5:37decently in order, I participated in a practical joke
- 5:40and at the big request of the couple who were going to get
- 5:44married, instead of playing the usual here comes the bride music
- 5:49as they write, as they first come in, I played the funeral
- 5:53March and they asked me to do it.
- 5:57And then I put on a little sound effect for them.
- 5:59As those, you know, I was scratching the record and it
- 6:02went into the to the wedding music and I looked down at them,
- 6:07but they were in fits of laughter.
- 6:10I say, I used to always have them sitting down in front of me
- 6:12to one side facing me. They they thought this was
- 6:16hilarious and but the rest of the congregation.
- 6:23So you just, I'm not saying this as a story in favorite.
- 6:26I'm saying I should have said no to that because it came over
- 6:30very badly to everyone else, I guess, except for the married
- 6:33couple. But still, it put a bit of a
- 6:35sour feeling on the whole event, just for a moment.
- 6:39So I, I, I think that whatever it is, whether it's really,
- 6:42really a publicity exercise or whether it was a genuine, just
- 6:47not knowing how to, how to control yourself, getting the
- 6:53timing wrong with a humorous thing of dancing, or whether she
- 6:56genuinely thought, well, I'm obviously the most beautiful, so
- 6:59I have to get up and dance. Whatever it is, she shouldn't
- 7:02have done it. Well, quite now a few things
- 7:05here because Peltz Beckham basically said I have been
- 7:09silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters
- 7:13private. And this was written in a series
- 7:15of posts to his 16,000,000 followers.
- 7:18These slightly more than you Mr. Pete.
- 7:21What does surprise me here is he sort of went on to say,
- 7:24unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go
- 7:27to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself
- 7:30and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been
- 7:33printed. Well, that's all very well.
- 7:35But Mr. Pete, what does surprise me is, first of all, you were
- 7:38not invited to the wedding. So that's sort of scandal in
- 7:40itself. But secondly, why even air this?
- 7:44Because it makes him look a little bit sort of childlike to
- 7:48me. Yes, well, I think the keyword
- 7:50is about parents and team. It's a media team putting these
- 7:57sound by side, putting out social media posts.
- 8:00So yeah, it's gone out of control because of the way that
- 8:04celebrity culture works. And if I could just comment just
- 8:09in closing, I think that's that's what we're seeing.
- 8:12We're seeing here. We're seeing modern the the
- 8:15apogee of modern celebrity culture.
- 8:17But a modern celebrity culture, it teaches us that every time,
- 8:21every moment is actually a stage to publicise yourself and
- 8:26possibly your merchant size merchandise.
- 8:29Every gathering opportunity is is an opportunity to further
- 8:34your brand. Christianity, and I guess common
- 8:37sense teaches the opposite. Real love and good behaviour in
- 8:43a situation often looks more like mistreat.
- 8:47Well, it does indeed. And in fact, I would say, well,
- 8:50how do they get out of this situation?
- 8:52So, Mr. Pete, if you were talking to Brooklyn right now,
- 8:56how does he bend it like Beckham?
- 9:00Well, I would say that it's, it's, I would say that it's,
- 9:04it's not a situation that you that you step away from and just
- 9:10say, no, it doesn't matter. I say that you get together and
- 9:14decide. The couple get together and
- 9:16decide to forgive.
