- 0:17Speaker 1: now your hosts, Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's mid October and that means the lull is singing
- 0:24Speaker 2: you a sweet lullaby to sleep?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Or is it?
- 0:27Speaker 2: If you know where the deer are and you have
- 0:29Speaker 2: the right hole front, it could be absolutely awesome.
- 0:33Speaker 4: This is rough Bresh, let's go. This isrough.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Fresh Radio brought you a first Light gear. This Casey
- 0:52Speaker 2: Smith and my ben amigo, Tyler Jones.
- 0:56Speaker 4: What are you doing? Man?
- 0:58Speaker 3: Oh?
- 0:59Speaker 5: Just try a little myself to sleep and get a
- 1:01Speaker 5: little little The right leg is just shaking the bed
- 1:04Speaker 5: that I'm laying on, Yeah, so that I can rock.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Myself to sleep.
- 1:09Speaker 2: You kind of like it, just a little grasshoppers of
- 1:11Speaker 2: rubbing them legs's going to sleep?
- 1:15Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Did you just call me cricket Jones?
- 1:17Speaker 4: Old cricket Jones?
- 1:18Speaker 3: Man?
- 1:18Speaker 4: That probably because you jumped high. That's why they called
- 1:21Speaker 4: you that.
- 1:21Speaker 3: No, I see the play guitar.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I don't know how that correlates because crickets are percussionists,
- 1:30Speaker 2: is that one? Yeah, they play stringing a I see,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I see, I see.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well I hear you had a very swell lunch. Did
- 1:41Speaker 2: you happen to get a dessert as well?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Swell is what my belly is doing right now.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I chicken, fried steaks, mashed potatoes, and uh, I'm feeling
- 1:53Speaker 5: like I need an after right now, you know, I mean,
- 1:54Speaker 5: midday between hunts, kind of warm, you know, feeling like
- 1:59Speaker 5: an old buck just want to down.
- 2:00Speaker 4: That's it, man.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I think that if we want to really understand dearing
- 2:05Speaker 2: a deeper level, we should just look within and just
- 2:07Speaker 2: think about what it's like whenever we're satisfied, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: or what it is that we need, and then we'll
- 2:11Speaker 2: have a better idea about it.
- 2:12Speaker 3: You know. That's right, man, basic need you know, that's right.
- 2:16Speaker 4: It needs I don't know.
- 2:17Speaker 3: You don't need that new Matthew's bow.
- 2:19Speaker 2: No, maybe you do, Maybe you might well if you
- 2:21Speaker 2: don't know, people don't. Yeah, Yeah, that's it man. You
- 2:24Speaker 2: don't need to go hunting, but you just might want to,
- 2:27Speaker 2: you know, I want to.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You know, you need some water every once in a while.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I need some bad you know, I'm up here
- 2:34Speaker 2: doing a little do your scouting, and when I say up,
- 2:39Speaker 2: that's gonna just remain ambiguous.
- 2:41Speaker 3: But let's go man Canada.
- 2:43Speaker 4: That's right.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Uh, I'm in the country where they got crops and
- 2:48Speaker 2: one of them crops is milo and I'm pretty allergic
- 2:52Speaker 2: to that stuff. So I got me a little sinus
- 2:54Speaker 2: infection going that I think is the result of allergies,
- 2:57Speaker 2: or I got allergies compounding compounding upon something.
- 3:00Speaker 4: It's already there. So if I sound weird, that's why.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And I'm gonna try to remain sniffless while we're on
- 3:06Speaker 2: this phone.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Without sniffle, that's what I'm gonna have.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's nontrumissible.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Don't worry. You get a little hunt right now yourself.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Hey, Yeah, yeah, I've been hunting.
- 3:26Speaker 5: I've been hunting a little different deer than most people
- 3:29Speaker 5: are used to hunting.
- 3:29Speaker 7: You know, people hunt these kind of some kind of
- 3:32Speaker 7: a little we'll leave at that, and then, uh, once
- 3:36Speaker 7: you conclude that hunt next week, we'll get a we'll
- 3:38Speaker 7: get a wrap on that and figure out exactly what's
- 3:40Speaker 7: going on.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Yeah, So you know, I'm just waiting. I'm waiting to
- 3:44Speaker 5: hunt white tails until you know the October lull is better.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I mean, man, if I was you, I was just
- 3:49Speaker 2: crawl in a hole and lower yourself to sleep until
- 3:52Speaker 2: the loll's over.
- 3:53Speaker 3: You know what I'm thinking about doing?
- 3:56Speaker 5: Yeah, all by until then, and then when the has
- 4:00Speaker 5: finished and over, I will be ready to shoot white hills.
- 4:04Speaker 6: All right.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Tell me, in general, what do you think about the
- 4:07Speaker 2: October lowl, because it's gonna be a big topic of
- 4:09Speaker 2: conversation today.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah. I think, generally speaking, I don't just love the
- 4:16Speaker 3: concept of the October.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Loll because it's not fun, or because you don't really
- 4:24Speaker 2: think it's a real thing.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Oh, you know, I think it. I don't know. I
- 4:33Speaker 3: lean towards it not being a real thing.
- 4:35Speaker 4: But interesting.
- 4:37Speaker 5: There's some new info to me that is making it
- 4:41Speaker 5: feel or real.
- 4:43Speaker 4: What's that?
- 4:45Speaker 5: Uh, it's basically a lack of trail camera data, So
- 4:48Speaker 5: I guess you'd say lack of into Yeah. We put
- 4:53Speaker 5: some trail cameras out in some different areas and across
- 4:57Speaker 5: the US, and they have been very quiet the.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Last week two days.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I've seen this, Yeah for sure. Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It seems like sometime around October fourth, we had a
- 5:09Speaker 2: daylight walker in the Midwest, a shooter is a big
- 5:14Speaker 2: ten point. And then since then it's kind of been
- 5:17Speaker 2: just all silent on the home front out there.
- 5:20Speaker 3: So why do they why do they stop.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Daylight walking or period walking period on our cameras.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I fan or six, I don't know for sure. I
- 5:29Speaker 2: got some thoughts. I think it's all environmental factors. I
- 5:32Speaker 2: don't think it's every it's like a I don't think
- 5:34Speaker 2: it's a hormonal thing too much.
- 5:35Speaker 4: I don't think it's like, well, maybe you might could
- 5:37Speaker 4: consider it.
- 5:38Speaker 2: That it's not the rut where their bodies are telling them, oh,
- 5:42Speaker 2: it's time to get up and do stuff, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: chase dose and and you know, uh, spread your genes,
- 5:49Speaker 2: as they would say. But it's kind of the inverse
- 5:54Speaker 2: of that that that drive isn't there yet, and so
- 5:57Speaker 2: deer just don't moving around very much right now.
- 5:59Speaker 4: They have a lot of reason to.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They're just eating, hanging out, rubbing a little bit here
- 6:03Speaker 2: and there, you know, and they just don't do a
- 6:05Speaker 2: whole lot. And then he compound that with some some
- 6:08Speaker 2: other like environmental factors, like right now it's blazing hot,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and I don't really like to get.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Out there middle of the day, neither of the deer right.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And then across the country there are two types of
- 6:24Speaker 2: nuts falling from a tree. In the south there's an
- 6:27Speaker 2: acron falling from the tree, and in the north there's
- 6:29Speaker 2: an acorn falling from the tree.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And I thought you were gonna say whites and reds.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Uh.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, there's that deciduous deciduous.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Hard mast is falling currently.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And what means that is that that the deer don't
- 6:44Speaker 2: have to go very far right, they can kind of
- 6:46Speaker 2: just live and chow down on acrons and and stay
- 6:50Speaker 2: away from people.
- 6:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Yeah, they stay away from our cameras too, they do.
- 6:56Speaker 3: So it's it's very odd. Uh huh. You know you
- 6:58Speaker 3: had mentioned at one point that you know, had a
- 7:01Speaker 3: lot of places hadn't seen it for Australia. Yeah, so
- 7:04Speaker 3: I think.
- 7:05Speaker 5: I think that's something too, you know, I mean these uh,
- 7:08Speaker 5: these animals eat all kinds of stuff. They browse a
- 7:10Speaker 5: lot of different things throughout the day usually, and uh,
- 7:13Speaker 5: even though there's uh a lot of people like to see.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You know, they can see it's easy easy for people
- 7:20Speaker 3: to see acrons falling and making noise. And you know,
- 7:24Speaker 3: when you drive a car over the driveway. You know,
- 7:26Speaker 3: you can crunch them all up or whatever. But it's also.
- 7:31Speaker 5: You know, the deer can't survive just on aacrants, so
- 7:35Speaker 5: you're you know, they have to eat something else. And uh,
- 7:37Speaker 5: you know some of that browse and stuff like that
- 7:39Speaker 5: that they leaves and different things like that, are you know,
- 7:45Speaker 5: still viable and and.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Uh, I would have seen tasty as well somewhat.
- 7:52Speaker 5: I know, like where we're where we're at, it's you know,
- 7:55Speaker 5: it's ninety five degrees.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Or you know, with like left up to come up here,
- 8:01Speaker 3: it's you know, ninety five degrees, it's hot.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Things are dry, dry, and so you know, I don't
- 8:06Speaker 5: know how great some of those broad leaves taste, but.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, there's uh, they got to eat something different then.
- 8:14Speaker 3: So there's a lot of there's a lot lot of
- 8:16Speaker 3: factors that can weigh into that.
- 8:17Speaker 5: I think this October old and again the deer, if
- 8:22Speaker 5: we're gonna speak in truths, which people don't love a
- 8:24Speaker 5: lot these days, the deer don't just fall out of
- 8:29Speaker 5: existence or going to another dimension. They uh, they're still
- 8:33Speaker 5: on this planet during this time period, so they exist.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Somewhere and as hunters for whatever reason, we just don't
- 8:41Speaker 3: see them as as often.
- 8:43Speaker 5: And it may be something you know, back to like
- 8:46Speaker 5: our biology or whatever.
- 8:47Speaker 3: There's something about the way that humans.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Kind of go about their day or operate or whatever
- 8:57Speaker 5: that we're just not ready to get to find them
- 8:59Speaker 5: in the in the middle October.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Sometimes, yeah, and so we just put a name on
- 9:02Speaker 2: it and call it the October roll and really it's us, Yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 2: just can't.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Really figure out how to how to find them.
- 9:07Speaker 2: It's probably I mean, this is one of the hardest
- 9:09Speaker 2: times a year to find a deer. I don't I mean,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I don't have a deer right now that I'd feel
- 9:13Speaker 2: confident about going.
- 9:14Speaker 4: And hunting, you know. So, uh, it's it's difficult for sure.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And so.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yeah, in the sense of it being a mystical thing,
- 9:24Speaker 2: it's not that. But it is a difficult time of
- 9:27Speaker 2: year to find a dear. But if you know where
- 9:28Speaker 2: they're at, if you if you got a good beat
- 9:30Speaker 2: on one, you can probably still find even getting killed.
- 9:32Speaker 5: But why would you how would you if you were
- 9:35Speaker 5: to give a tip on how to find a deer
- 9:37Speaker 5: during the during the quote unquote roll, what would you say?
- 9:41Speaker 4: I would say It's tough.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I would say I I would look for extremely fresh
- 9:50Speaker 2: rubs and thick betting, and I would just that. I
- 9:59Speaker 2: would just get the tree. I'd climb up about eighteen
- 10:02Speaker 2: feet high and that would fold my hands together and
- 10:04Speaker 2: I would pray about it. Maybe you might see one
- 10:08Speaker 2: if that happens. It's difficult, but that's my that's my take.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I think that the freshest sign is going to put
- 10:14Speaker 2: you the closest to the deer, and you're gonna have
- 10:16Speaker 2: to be within one hundred yards of him on an
- 10:18Speaker 2: evening to feel like you got a shot.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Right now, I think.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You know that's that's not the truth everywhere on everything,
- 10:26Speaker 2: but in general, that would be That would be my take.
- 10:29Speaker 2: That's what I think, Tyler. This is a difficult time
- 10:33Speaker 2: of year, but what fallows it.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Up well pre right and right?
- 10:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:40Speaker 2: I mean, And so what is effectually known as scrape
- 10:43Speaker 2: week sometimes scrape week.
- 10:45Speaker 5: A lot of people call call this next week or
- 10:48Speaker 5: so or two weeks scrape week or so, you know,
- 10:50Speaker 5: like it's it's got different names.
- 10:52Speaker 3: We like to name stuff.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think that one thing that I can
- 10:59Speaker 5: look at historically speaking, that gives me hope for the
- 11:02Speaker 5: next week and maybe should give you guys, hope as well.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Is two years ago, I was hunting some.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Land, public land in Illinois.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Well, I actually wasn't hunting it yet, but we had
- 11:13Speaker 5: put a camera out in the summer. It set all
- 11:14Speaker 5: summer until October sixteenth, got a little bit of weather
- 11:19Speaker 5: and I had.
- 11:20Speaker 3: A buck show up on that camera in the dark
- 11:25Speaker 3: working the scrape.
- 11:27Speaker 5: And this buck had never been there and shows up
- 11:30Speaker 5: on the sixteenth in the dark working.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Scrape things like ten PM.
- 11:34Speaker 5: So instead of going up there and trying to hunt
- 11:36Speaker 5: this year, trying to find you know, hope that his
- 11:39Speaker 5: hope that he came in you know, a little bit
- 11:41Speaker 5: earlier every morning, every day, every night. I decided, along
- 11:46Speaker 5: with one of our guests from this.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Swege helped me to make this decision.
- 11:52Speaker 5: But we decided that it would be better if I
- 11:55Speaker 5: held off for about a week and waited on a
- 11:58Speaker 5: good cold front that came in the middle of the
- 12:00Speaker 5: day to change things up and give me an evening hang.
- 12:03Speaker 5: That might be advantageous and I might be able to
- 12:07Speaker 5: see if that buck or a buck show up in
- 12:09Speaker 5: the daylight and I went in there, I actually drove
- 12:13Speaker 5: in the morning, didn't go and hunt anything. I drove
- 12:15Speaker 5: with a fields and crops in case I had to
- 12:17Speaker 5: go do something different, marked everything in the hotel, got dressed,
- 12:21Speaker 5: and came back that afternoon, and in about two hours
- 12:24Speaker 5: of sitting there.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I had an opportunity to kill the buck.
- 12:27Speaker 5: They showed up a week before I scrape, which I
- 12:30Speaker 5: did kill, and then another even bigger buck that got away,
- 12:35Speaker 5: and it was one of the.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Most fun evenings of my life. Man.
- 12:40Speaker 5: So I mean this this next week things can really
- 12:43Speaker 5: pan out, and I think being conservative and you know,
- 12:47Speaker 5: making sure you got good entry, you got good wind.
- 12:51Speaker 3: If you're gonna hunt.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Otherwise just maybe don't hunt until you know for sure
- 12:56Speaker 5: that a really really strong cold front is coming in, or.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Just we start to get a little bit closer to
- 13:02Speaker 3: the end.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Of this month and you start seeing some maybe closer
- 13:05Speaker 5: daylight movement. Yeah, those cold tempts will help it to
- 13:08Speaker 5: kind of, you know, actually come to fruition where a
- 13:11Speaker 5: deer is actually in shoot mind. Yeah, just being patient,
- 13:14Speaker 5: being conservative the next week, keeping eyes on the cameras
- 13:17Speaker 5: and that kind of thing. And I think that's highly
- 13:19Speaker 5: important coming up, and it's it's fixing to happen.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Just hold off just a little bit longer.
- 13:22Speaker 4: That's it, man.
- 13:23Speaker 2: That's that is some good advice, right there, sir. You
- 13:25Speaker 2: sound like you know what you're talking about. I think
- 13:27Speaker 2: you do.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Actually, yeah, that's right, that's right.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I do know that our guests this week are pretty
- 13:32Speaker 2: excited about the cooler temperatures. You know, it's a cold
- 13:35Speaker 2: front or a cool front, depending on where you're at
- 13:37Speaker 2: in the country, but either way, anticipation is kind of high.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Let the people know who the guests are well.
- 13:45Speaker 2: As you mentioned, well a Goo Jake Hofer in Illinois
- 13:48Speaker 2: will be on here. Sounds like a buddy of his
- 13:50Speaker 2: did in fact exist outside the October Lowell killed a
- 13:53Speaker 2: big giant deer. And then we're gonna have Nick Gonzalez
- 13:57Speaker 2: in Texas, a good friend of ours as well.
- 13:59Speaker 4: He's looking for to the cold front, hunting some public land.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Michael Stole, the Element's own Michael Stole has been in
- 14:06Speaker 2: South Dakota.
- 14:06Speaker 4: He's got some info there as well.
- 14:08Speaker 2: And then we're gonna wrap it up with Jimmy Shyri
- 14:11Speaker 2: in Pennsylvania and he's gonna tell us what is going
- 14:15Speaker 2: on up in the Big Woods.
- 14:17Speaker 4: So I'm excited.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think I should give this disclaimer though, Guys, if
- 14:23Speaker 2: there's any week where you need to just hear the
- 14:27Speaker 2: numbers that people tell us and then say, you know what,
- 14:30Speaker 2: maybe I should take a step back. This is the week. Okay,
- 14:34Speaker 2: I'm not telling you don't go hunting. I'm not saying
- 14:36Speaker 2: anything about that. But it's not here yet. But it's
- 14:40Speaker 2: so close to be a little patient kind of like
- 14:42Speaker 2: what Tyler said, right, dude, Yeah, yeah, you.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Don't wanna You don't want to blow up the woods, right,
- 14:47Speaker 5: I mean, it's you blow up the woods a month
- 14:49Speaker 5: before the rud It ain't no big deal.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Probably, yeah, blow it up a week before the run.
- 14:54Speaker 3: That could make things really hard on you.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like getting to hype at the pop Pepper
- 14:57Speaker 2: Allley on Fridays and then by the time it's game time.
- 14:59Speaker 4: You're tired. You know. You gotta like you got.
- 15:02Speaker 2: To hit that cycle just to the right time and
- 15:03Speaker 2: it's coming on. So let's go talk to these fellas well.
- 15:06Speaker 2: This week, we've got Jimmy Shyrie, friend of mine, up
- 15:09Speaker 2: in Pennsylvania hunting deer, and then Nick Gonzalez down in
- 15:14Speaker 2: Texas hunting some Texas public land. And then we've got
- 15:19Speaker 2: Greg Latham, the Element's own Greg Latham, who is been
- 15:23Speaker 2: spending some time up in Kansas, and then Jake Hofer
- 15:26Speaker 2: of Exodus Outdoor Gear. The dude has laid October dialed.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I can't wait to hear what these guys have to
- 15:32Speaker 2: say on the phone. I've got Jimmy Shyrie in Pennsylvania.
- 15:36Speaker 2: He has been after the deer since their opener.
- 15:38Speaker 4: What's going on? Dude?
- 15:40Speaker 8: Hunting as much as I possibly can.
- 15:42Speaker 4: That's what's going on. Hey, I love it.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's how every feller should lead his conversations,
- 15:47Speaker 2: you know what I mean, hunting as much as I
- 15:49Speaker 2: possibly can.
- 15:50Speaker 4: How are the woods in Pennsylvania right now?
- 15:53Speaker 9: Ah, They're been pretty decent, i'd say, and see deer anyway.
- 15:56Speaker 4: That's good. That's good.
- 15:57Speaker 2: So this week in general, it's kind of like what
- 16:01Speaker 2: people call the October Lowell. You know, it's the mid
- 16:04Speaker 2: October stuff essentially. I don't know if it's ever, you know,
- 16:07Speaker 2: if there's a date range or whatever. Do you feel
- 16:09Speaker 2: like you see that in the woods? Is that a
- 16:10Speaker 2: thing for where you're at?
- 16:13Speaker 8: Before?
- 16:13Speaker 9: I used to think that, but lately I think, after
- 16:16Speaker 9: hearing research, I don't think it really exists. After changing
- 16:20Speaker 9: my tactics, I've noticed, like deer just seemed to change
- 16:23Speaker 9: their plans.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Got I kind of changed with them. So yeah, now
- 16:26Speaker 6: I've been seeing more deer all your long, kind.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So what's the main change or tactic You're using to
- 16:32Speaker 2: still see deer during the kind of the more difficult
- 16:34Speaker 2: time to find them.
- 16:35Speaker 9: I'm noticing the bucks just like the change in the
- 16:37Speaker 9: test astera and you know, they're starting to rub, they're
- 16:39Speaker 9: moving a little more. They do seem to go a
- 16:42Speaker 9: little more nocturnal, but you just got to kind of
- 16:44Speaker 9: find where they're betting and get a little closer.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Are you finding that betting in like pre scouting or
- 16:51Speaker 2: you know what I'm like preseason scouting?
- 16:53Speaker 9: Yeah, a lot of preseason scouting, and then some of
- 16:55Speaker 9: the properties I hunt. I've been hunting for a while now,
- 16:58Speaker 9: and I've kind of just over time picked out areas
- 17:00Speaker 9: where I've noticed junior kicking big bucks out or seeing
- 17:04Speaker 9: them more often.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Got you?
- 17:05Speaker 2: So, uh, you know, you you definitely live in the
- 17:08Speaker 2: area of the country that has a lot of timber,
- 17:10Speaker 2: uh and acorns or acorns depending on where you're at,
- 17:14Speaker 2: is what people call it.
- 17:15Speaker 4: You know, the hard mass fall is this time of year.
- 17:17Speaker 2: But I also know where you live is affected by
- 17:19Speaker 2: that moth, the oak moth that really bothers the trees bad.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Right is that is that a thing? Do you have
- 17:25Speaker 4: a good acorn crop? Or is it?
- 17:27Speaker 9: What's this year is phenomenal. We have a ton of
- 17:30Speaker 9: acorns this year. Last year was really bad. I forget
- 17:34Speaker 9: the name. Now they changed the name of the moth
- 17:36Speaker 9: to be a little more correct. But but anyhow that
- 17:41Speaker 9: they didn't seem to be bad.
- 17:42Speaker 2: This year we have crazy good acorns. Okay, very cool.
- 17:46Speaker 2: So is that something you're targeting to have deer encounters? Yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 2: that's what I'm targeting.
- 17:51Speaker 8: But the problem is there's so much of it.
- 17:53Speaker 6: You got kind of pick and shoes where you're sitting.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure. Have you all had your first frost yet?
- 18:00Speaker 6: We have as in an area I haven't here where
- 18:03Speaker 6: I live, but just driving to work, I've noticed, like
- 18:05Speaker 6: when I get towards there, it's it's had.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Frost air earlier this week.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Got youa Does that affect some of the food sources
- 18:12Speaker 2: for deer? I mean, I can imagine you live in
- 18:14Speaker 2: an area of the country where there are wild apple
- 18:16Speaker 2: trees and apples on the ground aren't going to do
- 18:18Speaker 2: great after a freeze, right, and then the you know,
- 18:22Speaker 2: the broad leaf stuff, deer browsing and all that, that all changes, right.
- 18:25Speaker 2: So is that one of the things you think kind
- 18:26Speaker 2: of contributes to, you know, deer changing what they're doing.
- 18:29Speaker 9: I think it does a little bit, at least I
- 18:32Speaker 9: noticed just here to run my house. I mean, we
- 18:34Speaker 9: have apple trees here and they seem to drop real early. Anyhow,
- 18:38Speaker 9: the deer hit them hard and now it's nothing.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:42Speaker 9: Yeah, So, I mean I don't know what it really
- 18:43Speaker 9: affects it like crazy.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I guess it just takes its course. Yeah, I got you. Cool?
- 18:47Speaker 2: So when do you shift your focus to scrapes? Are
- 18:51Speaker 2: you already scrapes or is that still a week or
- 18:54Speaker 2: two out now?
- 18:55Speaker 9: Actually, I just noticed a lot of rubs popping up
- 18:57Speaker 9: this slot within the last week, and a lot of
- 18:59Speaker 9: scrapes started up. And once I start seeing them, I
- 19:02Speaker 9: start focusing my you know, my hons on scrapes.
- 19:06Speaker 4: No one buck sign got you? Got youa you running
- 19:08Speaker 4: shot cameras right now? Too?
- 19:09Speaker 8: Yep? I am yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 4: How's your camera data? A lot of nocturnal action?
- 19:14Speaker 8: Uh huh, seems that way.
- 19:15Speaker 9: Anyway, if I had five bucks last night, hit hit
- 19:17Speaker 9: us grade there I had to sell camelon gotcha?
- 19:20Speaker 4: Gotcha? Wow?
- 19:21Speaker 2: So hitting scrapes at night, So really the first good
- 19:24Speaker 2: cold cool weather push, there's a good opportunity maybe to
- 19:27Speaker 2: see some daylight moving.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Huh. Yeah, it's actually this week.
- 19:30Speaker 9: We're we're dipping into the near freezing level here in
- 19:33Speaker 9: the nighttime here this week and highs in the fifties,
- 19:35Speaker 9: so here are definitely on their feet. I've still seen
- 19:38Speaker 9: a lot of nocturnal movement, but I'm hoping this week
- 19:40Speaker 9: we catch one moving a little earlier.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's cool. So let's look at this week.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I know that a large portion of the country is
- 19:48Speaker 2: going to experience some cooler temps. It sounds like you're
- 19:51Speaker 2: going to see the same there in Pennsylvania. If you
- 19:53Speaker 2: had to rank the buck movement on a scale of
- 19:57Speaker 2: one to ten in Pennsylvania over the ne week, what
- 20:00Speaker 2: would you call it and why?
- 20:03Speaker 9: I am going to probably rank it right around a six. Okay,
- 20:06Speaker 9: I think you're gonna start seeing bucks move a little
- 20:08Speaker 9: more in a daylight, but I still think you're gonna
- 20:10Speaker 9: hit the majority of them right after darker.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Yeah, sometime in the middle of night, gotcha. So you
- 20:16Speaker 6: need the possibility to see one's getting bough higher though.
- 20:19Speaker 4: That's good. That's what we need, always need the chances
- 20:22Speaker 4: just to get a little bit better.
- 20:23Speaker 2: And they're going to very much so, as the says,
- 20:26Speaker 2: testosterol supposed to ramp up and we get to that
- 20:28Speaker 2: sweet month of November very soon.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Man. Well, I appreciate the report from uh, Pennsylvania.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Dude, I'm glad you're getting to get out and chase
- 20:34Speaker 2: the deer around a whole lot and uh, I hope
- 20:36Speaker 2: that you do, in fact run into one of those
- 20:39Speaker 2: bucks this week.
- 20:41Speaker 8: Thanks my pleasure.
- 20:42Speaker 2: My friend Nick Gonzalez, the public land hunter as they.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Call him his in Texas right now, burning up.
- 20:49Speaker 10: What's going on, dude, Man, I'm just sitting in the
- 20:52Speaker 10: truck right now and did some scouting this afternoon.
- 20:55Speaker 11: But it's pretty hot out so yeah, just just chilling
- 20:59Speaker 11: at the moment.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Are you drying your clothes and the air conditioner?
- 21:02Speaker 11: Yeah, I am all sweaty.
- 21:05Speaker 4: That is October due hunting in Texas, man, for sure.
- 21:08Speaker 11: Absolutely.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Yeah. I let me ask you a question.
- 21:11Speaker 2: A lot of the country is talking about the October
- 21:14Speaker 2: lowll right, now, Texas is kind of its own deal.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Do you feel like Texas has an October lowll?
- 21:22Speaker 10: I would say typically I've felt that way, but I
- 21:25Speaker 10: haven't quite felt that way this year for some reason.
- 21:30Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know.
- 21:30Speaker 10: I've seen I feel like I've seen more activity this
- 21:33Speaker 10: year in October than I have in previous years.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 21:36Speaker 11: I don't know what the reason for that is.
- 21:38Speaker 2: But yeah, so it is. Hell, let me ask you this,
- 21:42Speaker 2: how's the acorn crop.
- 21:43Speaker 4: In the areas that you've been in Texas?
- 21:46Speaker 11: It's been pretty good?
- 21:47Speaker 10: Yeah, Yeah, it's been It's been pretty good, and they're definite,
- 21:50Speaker 10: definitely hidding those.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, is that something you're targeting right now?
- 21:54Speaker 10: It is, yeah, for sure, kind of the main food
- 21:57Speaker 10: source where I'm at.
- 21:59Speaker 2: So that what did you do on your little scouting
- 22:00Speaker 2: loop that you do today? Were you looking for acorns
- 22:03Speaker 2: or what?
- 22:03Speaker 4: Were you looking for?
- 22:05Speaker 10: Actually looking for scrapes mostly today and trails that lead
- 22:09Speaker 10: to it, and just trying to cut them off because
- 22:12Speaker 10: I think the scrape the scrapes are really lighting up
- 22:14Speaker 10: where I'm at. I mean today when I was scouting,
- 22:16Speaker 10: I found a ton of them.
- 22:18Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 22:19Speaker 10: Yeah, And so that's kind of what I've been targeting,
- 22:22Speaker 10: and I think they're hitting those then, you know, kind
- 22:24Speaker 10: of early mornings, you know, right before shooting light and
- 22:28Speaker 10: probably right at the end of shooting light light in
- 22:30Speaker 10: the evening.
- 22:31Speaker 11: So I'm just trying to find those places in between.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're saying in between, are you targeting, are
- 22:37Speaker 2: you figuring out where betting is and kind of getting
- 22:40Speaker 2: in between there.
- 22:41Speaker 10: That's what I'm That's what I'm trying to do. In
- 22:43Speaker 10: Texas a little bit harder sometimes to find betting. But
- 22:46Speaker 10: I think trails, if there's a good trail that kind
- 22:49Speaker 10: of leads up to an area, I think it's something
- 22:51Speaker 10: you can kind.
- 22:51Speaker 11: Of key in on.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, for sure. So how far do you set
- 22:56Speaker 4: it from the trail?
- 22:59Speaker 10: It kind of depends what the wind, But like this morning,
- 23:01Speaker 10: I set up probably about twenty yards from a main.
- 23:06Speaker 11: Trail that went through.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Yeah, did you see any deer on that main trail?
- 23:11Speaker 10: There was the trail actually kind of splits at one
- 23:14Speaker 10: point and which is about fifty yards away, and they
- 23:17Speaker 10: seem to be taking.
- 23:18Speaker 11: That other trail more.
- 23:19Speaker 10: But they there were definitely some doughs that came down
- 23:22Speaker 10: that trail that I was onnest wet.
- 23:23Speaker 4: That always how it goes.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Man, if you got to pick too, you're gonna pick
- 23:27Speaker 2: the wrong one, right right. Sounds like you're narrowing it
- 23:31Speaker 2: down real nice.
- 23:33Speaker 4: A lot of the country's going to get.
- 23:34Speaker 2: A cold front this week, and I've actually been talking
- 23:36Speaker 2: to you outside of this, and I know that's something
- 23:39Speaker 2: that you're thinking about. Is your strategy going to change
- 23:41Speaker 2: once that cool weather gets here or are you just
- 23:43Speaker 2: making or gathering intel for when that weather does get here?
- 23:48Speaker 11: Mostly just been gathering intel for that.
- 23:50Speaker 10: So just the kind of scrape is kind of the
- 23:52Speaker 10: main thing I've been looking for, and I think that
- 23:55Speaker 10: with that cool front, maybe it'll keep them on their feet.
- 23:57Speaker 3: A little bit longer.
- 23:58Speaker 11: Yeah, So that's that's probably gonna be my main target.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Are you gonna add any calling or anything into the
- 24:08Speaker 2: mix as we kind of ramp up here?
- 24:10Speaker 4: Is that? Is that a tactic use?
- 24:12Speaker 3: It is?
- 24:13Speaker 10: Sometimes and I might I might this week when that
- 24:16Speaker 10: cold front comes through. This morning, when I was getting
- 24:18Speaker 10: set up, I was just about set up right before
- 24:20Speaker 10: shooting light, and there was a there was a buck
- 24:23Speaker 10: that was just really vocal just on that other trail,
- 24:27Speaker 10: really yards right it didn't see him, but he was
- 24:29Speaker 10: really vocal.
- 24:30Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 24:31Speaker 11: Yeah, so.
- 24:34Speaker 10: They're they're definitely starting to They're definitely starting to fire
- 24:37Speaker 10: up a little bit.
- 24:37Speaker 11: So I would probably consider using some calling.
- 24:40Speaker 2: That's cool, that's exciting. So you you you would, uh,
- 24:45Speaker 2: specifically grunt. You're gonna be doing some blind grunting potentially
- 24:49Speaker 2: while you're in the Yeah, yeah, potentially. Yeah, it just
- 24:52Speaker 2: depends on how slow it is. That's how I am.
- 24:53Speaker 2: If I've seen hing for like an hour, like you
- 24:55Speaker 2: know what, I could grunt right now, all do That's funny, Okay,
- 25:01Speaker 2: So looking forward to the cold front with that in mind,
- 25:05Speaker 2: of course, it still is mid October, right, So if
- 25:08Speaker 2: you had to rank the hunting in Texas in the
- 25:11Speaker 2: next week on a scale of one to ten for
- 25:13Speaker 2: buck movement, would you what would you say?
- 25:16Speaker 10: I'd probably give it around a six. Just as those
- 25:19Speaker 10: scrapes are really starting to light up, and with that
- 25:24Speaker 10: cold front, I really do think.
- 25:25Speaker 11: That they're going to be on their feet a little
- 25:26Speaker 11: bit more.
- 25:27Speaker 10: You know, I've seen a couple of bucks already in
- 25:30Speaker 10: the warmer weather during daylight hours, so I really think
- 25:34Speaker 10: that once that cool front comes to it's gonna it's
- 25:36Speaker 10: gonna get them out a little bit more.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Nice man.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Mid October six is a pretty good rating, so probably
- 25:42Speaker 2: good time to hit the woods in Texas. Appreciate it, dude,
- 25:44Speaker 2: and I hope that you get one of those big
- 25:46Speaker 2: bucks this week.
- 25:48Speaker 11: Thanks man, Appreciate it.
- 26:12Speaker 2: The Element's own Greg Latham homies been up in Kansas
- 26:16Speaker 2: doing some scouting.
- 26:17Speaker 12: What's up, dude, Not as much Vansas doing some scouting.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah, scouting is kind of hyped sometimes when you know
- 26:24Speaker 2: there's there might be some big deer around. But did
- 26:26Speaker 2: you happen to feel like there was a lot of
- 26:29Speaker 2: deer on their feet?
- 26:31Speaker 3: Not?
- 26:31Speaker 12: Really. It was pretty hot up in Kansas, and I
- 26:36Speaker 12: don't know, I just feel like things haven't got quite
- 26:39Speaker 12: haven't got going yet, you know.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so I've been asking everybody else about the October
- 26:43Speaker 2: lowll and Kansas isn't quite like a lot of the
- 26:47Speaker 2: rest of the Midwest. You know, It's a little bit
- 26:49Speaker 2: different kind of a state. But you still feel like
- 26:51Speaker 2: the October lowl is a thing there.
- 26:53Speaker 12: I don't know, it's a I feel like deer might
- 26:56Speaker 12: you know, they come out of velvet and they get
- 26:59Speaker 12: kind of hyped for a little bit. Yeah, and then
- 27:01Speaker 12: the hot weather is still around and they just kind of
- 27:04Speaker 12: I don't they just kind of lay low for.
- 27:06Speaker 4: A little bit, a lot of nighttime movement stuff like that.
- 27:08Speaker 12: Yeah, just kind of waiting on that first cold front.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Well that's coming this week.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Do you expect that deer will be or bucks will
- 27:15Speaker 2: be on their feet in daylighters?
- 27:16Speaker 4: It's still too early.
- 27:17Speaker 12: I think this cold front could get them on their feet.
- 27:20Speaker 12: I think scrapes would be a kind of a you know,
- 27:25Speaker 12: a target for me.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Yeah, at least how the crops look up in Kansas.
- 27:29Speaker 12: The crops were seemed like the corn was cut and uh,
- 27:35Speaker 12: I think they're in the middle of cutting mile Low.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so a lot of stuff has already come out
- 27:40Speaker 2: being seemed to be out too.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's like an early year for crops.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Huh.
- 27:45Speaker 12: Yeah, definitely.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So if you had to try to find a deer
- 27:50Speaker 2: to shoot this week, would you feel comfortable hanging and
- 27:53Speaker 2: waiting or would you be more like in the glassing
- 27:55Speaker 2: type thing.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Uh?
- 27:56Speaker 12: I would probably on a cold front. If if there
- 28:00Speaker 12: was a scrape I knew about, I would probably be
- 28:02Speaker 12: hanging on that.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker 12: But in the hot weather this week, I would have
- 28:07Speaker 12: been just glassing.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:08Speaker 2: How do you feel about the moon? We got a
- 28:10Speaker 2: full moon right now and it'll be full for a
- 28:12Speaker 2: couple of days here.
- 28:12Speaker 12: You know, I've never been a big believer in the
- 28:16Speaker 12: moon thing. Yeah, but I don't know. I feel like
- 28:20Speaker 12: the rising full moon. I've seen a lot of big
- 28:22Speaker 12: bucks on the rising full moon. So yeah, I don't know.
- 28:24Speaker 12: I think it's just a little bonus. It might help
- 28:26Speaker 12: you out a little bit. Yeah, I don't know.
- 28:28Speaker 4: What's what's the best October cold front date?
- 28:33Speaker 12: I'd say, man, anywhere from the twenty fifth to Halloween
- 28:39Speaker 12: is that's my favorite.
- 28:41Speaker 4: A little far out yet, right, this one's good, but.
- 28:44Speaker 12: This one could be good. But I think there's gonna
- 28:45Speaker 12: be a.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Better one in the month.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, do you think that what do you think
- 28:49Speaker 2: that the pattern is on the cold front? How long
- 28:51Speaker 2: between cold fronts do you think that it usually is
- 28:53Speaker 2: this time of year?
- 28:54Speaker 12: I think about every seven to ten days, maybe maybe
- 29:00Speaker 12: two weeks, but I think it's about ten days. Is
- 29:02Speaker 12: when you're gonna get your next one.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So I do think that deer will be on
- 29:06Speaker 2: their feet a lot, but maybe not bucks. Do you
- 29:10Speaker 2: feel like shooting a dough in a spot right now,
- 29:14Speaker 2: could mess up something? Or do you think it's a
- 29:16Speaker 2: good time to go ahead and fill the freezers?
- 29:19Speaker 12: Yeah, if you were going to shoot a dough, I'd
- 29:21Speaker 12: probably would have done it like way early.
- 29:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 12: I probably wouldn't mess around shooting a dough right now
- 29:27Speaker 12: because I think we're on the cusp of being able
- 29:29Speaker 12: to shoot a really big buck.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, man, that gets me excited.
- 29:33Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Do you feel like calling works this time of year?
- 29:41Speaker 12: Yeah, I definitely think it could could work. I mean,
- 29:43Speaker 12: if you see a buck that's you know, skirting edge
- 29:46Speaker 12: of your shooting range, I mean I definitely would try calling.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, at this point, would you bust out antlers or
- 29:52Speaker 2: grunt or like what's the thing to do still in
- 29:54Speaker 2: mid October?
- 29:55Speaker 12: I a grunt is probably my go to, Maybe a
- 29:59Speaker 12: snort we if he's kind of bristled up or I
- 30:03Speaker 12: think calling could work at this time of year. It's
- 30:06Speaker 12: just not quite there, but it's definitely a tactic tactic
- 30:10Speaker 12: worth you having.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Got you Okay, So, like we discussed, it is a
- 30:15Speaker 2: cold front week. The whole country's excited about it. Everybody's
- 30:18Speaker 2: talking about it. Right, it is still a little bit
- 30:21Speaker 2: or I shouldn't say a little bit earlier. I don't
- 30:23Speaker 2: want to lead you to your a different conclusion. But
- 30:25Speaker 2: it's earlier in the month then later, right right in
- 30:28Speaker 2: the middle of what most people call October. Lowell, a
- 30:31Speaker 2: little bit of a moon thing going on. If you
- 30:33Speaker 2: had to rank what you think Buck movement is going
- 30:36Speaker 2: to be like on a scale of one to ten
- 30:38Speaker 2: in Kansas for the next week, what do you think
- 30:39Speaker 2: is going to be the next week?
- 30:41Speaker 12: I think we get a cold front and I give
- 30:43Speaker 12: it about a seven. I think it's going to get
- 30:46Speaker 12: until eight or nine after that, but yeah, seven this week,
- 30:48Speaker 12: I think.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Okay, you're pretty you like it. You think it's still
- 30:50Speaker 2: a time to get out there and get after him.
- 30:52Speaker 12: I like the next week.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Okay, that's exciting, dude. Well appreciate the report. On the phone.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Now, I have got my friend Jacob for from Exodus
- 31:00Speaker 2: Outdoor to Gear and this guy probably has October, specifically
- 31:05Speaker 2: late October dialed more than any person that I know.
- 31:08Speaker 4: So I'm excited to talk to you. Man. What's going on?
- 31:11Speaker 8: Hey, thanks for having me. Not much is going on.
- 31:13Speaker 6: Just finished an evening hunt here wasn't too exciting, but man,
- 31:19Speaker 6: it's crazy that it's October fifteenth right now, and basically
- 31:22Speaker 6: half of October is over and we got to get
- 31:25Speaker 6: out of and enjoy every six.
- 31:26Speaker 8: So that's that's where my mentality is out right now.
- 31:28Speaker 4: That's cool, man.
- 31:28Speaker 2: So Illinois is where you're hunting right now, and it
- 31:32Speaker 2: sounds like, you know, just on the phone with you
- 31:34Speaker 2: Will to Go, you were having some rough hunts. A
- 31:38Speaker 2: friend of yours killed a very nice dear, So there's
- 31:41Speaker 2: things happening, and then tonight you saw kind of a
- 31:44Speaker 2: flurry of activity.
- 31:45Speaker 4: So can you explain that a little bit.
- 31:48Speaker 8: Yeah, We'll starting off with my buddy Richard.
- 31:50Speaker 6: He shot really really really nice dear buff ball lifetime
- 31:54Speaker 6: as I'm yeah, yeah, And so he was hunting off a.
- 32:00Speaker 8: Thick creek ditch with some cut.
- 32:02Speaker 6: Corn and an alfalfa field in the in the in
- 32:05Speaker 6: the area, and I was, you know, I'm guessing he
- 32:07Speaker 6: killed it before before we know where he was headed to.
- 32:09Speaker 6: But I assume he was probably going to the alfalfa field.
- 32:12Speaker 6: And the reason I say that is tonight I could
- 32:14Speaker 6: see in our f apple field probably one hundred fifty
- 32:16Speaker 6: yards away, and that's where all the deer ended up.
- 32:18Speaker 4: To go feed.
- 32:19Speaker 6: So that seemed to be the hot food source. And
- 32:22Speaker 6: you know, this cold front here, if you're in the
- 32:24Speaker 6: bubble of where that buck's spending a lot of time,
- 32:26Speaker 6: it could be really productive. And if you're like me
- 32:29Speaker 6: and you don't have a deer right in your bubble,
- 32:32Speaker 6: it could.
- 32:32Speaker 8: Be pretty slow.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I can definitely see that, and I don't I
- 32:35Speaker 2: have one deer that I could go hunt, but I'm
- 32:39Speaker 2: kind of still trying to be patient. But I know
- 32:40Speaker 2: exactly what you're talking about. So you mentioned the cold front,
- 32:45Speaker 2: that's that's impending right now. But right now the dates
- 32:49Speaker 2: that we're looking at. You know, this launch is on
- 32:51Speaker 2: October sixteenth, and I would kind of loosely denote the
- 32:58Speaker 2: second and third week of October over as being the
- 33:01Speaker 2: October loll Would you would you agree with that?
- 33:04Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 33:05Speaker 4: Just actually what people call it rot.
- 33:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I'd say we're smack dab in the middle of it.
- 33:10Speaker 6: And I feel like this next cold front we could
- 33:13Speaker 6: call pre rut.
- 33:15Speaker 8: And that I mean, that is my opinion. And we
- 33:17Speaker 8: actually just released.
- 33:17Speaker 6: A really interesting episode on the xd of this podcast
- 33:19Speaker 6: with Steve Shirk. He runs the Hunt fifty trail cameras
- 33:23Speaker 6: on Pennsylvania Public Land.
- 33:24Speaker 8: And he makes mature book.
- 33:28Speaker 6: He's kind of mature buck movement tracker on this spreadsheet
- 33:31Speaker 6: and you can see distinctly with weather fronts of how
- 33:35Speaker 6: the buck activity picks up. And then during these really
- 33:38Speaker 6: warm days that are kind of you know, after Wednesday
- 33:41Speaker 6: going into Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, it's.
- 33:44Speaker 8: Probably gonna cool off, not with the.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Temperatures, but buck activity, especially in daylight.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure. So what is what are EU
- 33:53Speaker 2: opinions on the October Lol? Is it real? Is it
- 33:56Speaker 2: a thing that people should consider and when they're planning,
- 33:59Speaker 2: you know, hunt trips.
- 34:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's definitely something that you should plan.
- 34:04Speaker 6: I think that if the weather cooperates, it could still
- 34:06Speaker 6: be really good. Yeah, But if the weather isn't cooperating, man,
- 34:10Speaker 6: I would probably save those days for when the weather cooperates.
- 34:13Speaker 6: And I'm personally probably never going to take a week
- 34:17Speaker 6: vacation on the second week of October thirtek of October
- 34:21Speaker 6: on a hot trip personally, And that's just based off
- 34:23Speaker 6: of a bunch of trail camera data over the years.
- 34:26Speaker 6: But what does not me excited obviously October a little.
- 34:29Speaker 6: It could be challenging to maybe kill a buck. However,
- 34:33Speaker 6: there's a lot of sign that's about to get laid
- 34:35Speaker 6: down on that ass so.
- 34:36Speaker 8: Excited, so excited.
- 34:37Speaker 2: So I wanted to talk about that with you specifically
- 34:40Speaker 2: because you have dates pretty nailed as far as like
- 34:45Speaker 2: when you think is a good time to move and
- 34:47Speaker 2: when you think to predict like the first day on
- 34:49Speaker 2: movement and YadA YadA, and a lot of this orientates
- 34:52Speaker 2: around scrapes, and you're talking about the sign that are
- 34:54Speaker 2: that's about to get laid down. You and I've had
- 34:58Speaker 2: countless discussions about scrapes, how to hunt them, and even
- 35:03Speaker 2: Exodus has scrape week usually, right at least you used to, Right,
- 35:06Speaker 2: you're still doing scrape week this week this year.
- 35:08Speaker 8: You know, we haven't.
- 35:09Speaker 6: We've kind of dialed back on that. Okay, we've talked
- 35:12Speaker 6: about scrapes a lot.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of it's
- 35:16Speaker 2: loosely scrape week coming up, seeing right, that's kind of
- 35:18Speaker 2: like what follows the October lolls. So I guess my
- 35:21Speaker 2: question is is this cold front the cold front to
- 35:23Speaker 2: go ahead and move on those scrapes or are we
- 35:26Speaker 2: waiting for the one that maybe might happen in the
- 35:30Speaker 2: next six to ten days.
- 35:32Speaker 6: I would say both, and I hate that I'm not
- 35:34Speaker 6: giving it a definitive answer, but.
- 35:37Speaker 8: Because I hating people do that to me. So like,
- 35:40Speaker 8: for example, this Saturday, I.
- 35:41Speaker 6: Tore through a farm to go look for sign yeah,
- 35:43Speaker 6: and I found one scrape that was actually from last
- 35:46Speaker 6: year as well, that was really active as we got
- 35:49Speaker 6: deeper into October. There was some activity, you know, let's
- 35:52Speaker 6: say October or whatever, fourteen seventeen from last year, but
- 35:56Speaker 6: it really picked up when we got that front towards
- 35:58Speaker 6: the end of October last and so I'm anticipating similar
- 36:01Speaker 6: activity for this upcoming, you know.
- 36:04Speaker 8: As we get the next front.
- 36:05Speaker 6: So the long and short of it is, if you
- 36:06Speaker 6: find a scrape right now that's in conjunction of betting,
- 36:09Speaker 6: maybe on the way to food, to throw in one
- 36:11Speaker 6: other thing for people to key in on, that is
- 36:13Speaker 6: something I would I would pay a lot of attention
- 36:15Speaker 6: to because I'm telling you what, for the guys that
- 36:18Speaker 6: are saying I don't have anything to hunt, I'm not
- 36:20Speaker 6: feeling real good about this year. Your season is probably
- 36:24Speaker 6: going to change in the next week. From a trail
- 36:25Speaker 6: camera picture on a scrape.
- 36:27Speaker 8: If you follow those those things that I have because
- 36:30Speaker 8: every year I'm just like, oh my gosh, there's a
- 36:32Speaker 8: new due.
- 36:32Speaker 6: The year I shot my ey wouldn't show up until
- 36:34Speaker 6: the seventeenth of October. Yeah, and I shot them on
- 36:36Speaker 6: November six So it's like it happens a lot every
- 36:38Speaker 6: single year. So just buckle in and remain patient, but
- 36:42Speaker 6: move those cameras around to the best.
- 36:44Speaker 8: Sign and associated association with betting.
- 36:46Speaker 6: It's kind of what I would suggest for this next
- 36:49Speaker 6: week from a scouting interreparation tactic.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Man, those are some hot, high level tips. Man. Thank
- 36:55Speaker 4: you very much for that.
- 36:56Speaker 2: So as you're looking at the next week, you know
- 36:58Speaker 2: we're discussing this could from that. I mean quite honestly,
- 37:01Speaker 2: everyone around the country is excited about and I know
- 37:05Speaker 2: a lot of that has to do just because we're
- 37:07Speaker 2: so excited about deer season being here.
- 37:10Speaker 4: I still, well, I don't want to put words in
- 37:11Speaker 4: your mouth.
- 37:12Speaker 2: It is October sixteenth, right, it's not the twenty fifth,
- 37:15Speaker 2: and I see that we have a full moon rising
- 37:18Speaker 2: right now. It's almost complete, so like in the next
- 37:21Speaker 2: three days we're going to have full moon days.
- 37:24Speaker 4: All that being said, what do you think.
- 37:25Speaker 2: The deer movement is going to be like or the
- 37:27Speaker 2: buck movement, excuse me, on a scale of one to ten,
- 37:30Speaker 2: and why do you think that?
- 37:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I think for daylight buck activity in the next week,
- 37:36Speaker 6: I think it's going to be pretty low. To be honest,
- 37:38Speaker 6: I'm gonna put a number of like three to four. However,
- 37:41Speaker 6: I think that the inventory and sign that's getting laid
- 37:44Speaker 6: down is probably what is what I'm personally going to
- 37:47Speaker 6: key in on those hot days, Like I'm going to
- 37:49Speaker 6: go in and scout and probably move some stuff around
- 37:51Speaker 6: and get a game plan for the next cold front
- 37:54Speaker 6: or even prep into a somewhat of a game plan
- 37:57Speaker 6: for early November. Like I really like that first week
- 38:00Speaker 6: in November, just like everyone else the Earth. But that's
- 38:04Speaker 6: that's where my head's at. It's like not getting super
- 38:07Speaker 6: passive and just saying, you know, it's too warm.
- 38:09Speaker 11: I'm not going to do anything.
- 38:10Speaker 6: I'm going to try to do some strategics out and
- 38:12Speaker 6: move some cameras around, check some standard cameras, and just
- 38:15Speaker 6: get as much data to try to make.
- 38:17Speaker 8: A play on the next cold front.
- 38:18Speaker 6: Because man, the next one that comes in is often.
- 38:21Speaker 8: A really, really really great time to be on.
- 38:24Speaker 6: That community scrape, or even the scrape that's in the
- 38:27Speaker 6: back of your mind of like, oh my gosh, this
- 38:28Speaker 6: scrape was absolutely tore up. Go spend some time there
- 38:31Speaker 6: on this next front, and I think you'll be surprised
- 38:33Speaker 6: with what you see.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Awesome, dude, appreciate all the great information.
- 38:37Speaker 8: Awesome, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me on.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I hate to say it, but quite honestly, it's a
- 38:43Speaker 2: pretty good week to hunt deer, especially for mid October
- 38:46Speaker 2: with the weather rolling in.
- 38:47Speaker 4: And you heard that from the guys today.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I mean, big bucks are already going down and it's
- 38:51Speaker 2: only going to get better from here. Guys, this is
- 38:54Speaker 2: the sweet spot. This is the time of year that
- 38:56Speaker 2: we look forward to all the time. Enjoy it, don't
- 39:00Speaker 2: stress about it, don't worry too much. Have a great
- 39:02Speaker 2: time in the woods. Enjoy being out there in God's
- 39:05Speaker 2: creation because it's an awesome, awesome place to be. If
- 39:08Speaker 2: you are needing to get hype or you need to
- 39:10Speaker 2: get a little bit of the fix of a deer
- 39:12Speaker 2: hunt because you're at work or whatever it might be,
- 39:14Speaker 2: head over to the Element channel on YouTube because we
- 39:17Speaker 2: have got new hunts dropping every week and just the
- 39:21Speaker 2: thing you need to scratch your itch for the deer
- 39:23Speaker 2: woods or maybe learn a little something.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Also, go over to wiredhunt dot com this time of.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Year, Mark and the crew are always putting some really
- 39:32Speaker 2: good articles on the website. Right now, Adam Moore has
- 39:36Speaker 2: a article which I think is really interesting why your
- 39:41Speaker 2: early season hunting should include a ground game. Okay, and
- 39:44Speaker 2: people think about the ground a lot, especially myself if
- 39:46Speaker 2: you're in the rut or maybe even late season when
- 39:49Speaker 2: you're setting up on food sources, but early season, I
- 39:52Speaker 2: don't know. It's kind of strange, but it just might work.
- 39:54Speaker 2: There's some good details in an article. Go check that
- 39:56Speaker 2: out now if you haven't, this has been rout fresh,
- 39:58Speaker 2: Keep it fresh and
