- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Well, happy Sunday to you, everybody.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Today is Sunday as we record this Visual Historian podcast.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I got a buddy on the line today, man.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I had him on the line, a few months back.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: I met him.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I didn't meet him.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I was following him on his TikTok.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And I love being able to motivate somebody else that's, you know, either getting started or that just in an area to where if I have anything good to share, I want to do that.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And this guy was just that just kind of affected me.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, who's relatable as far as he's a family man with young kids and he's you know, just following some passion and moving forward.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So um I'm gonna go ahead and bring him in.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: He has been on the podcast in the past.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: His name is Mr.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Zach Cashman.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: How are you doing, sir?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Happy Sunday to you.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Happy Sunday to you too, man.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: I'm doing pretty good.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's a a dreary day out here in Missouri, but I really like the temperature's cool.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08unknown: Nice.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, the sun's covered up.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: It's it's a beautiful softbox outside right now, I'm gonna be honest.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I know people usually ask me when the weather's not perfect, and they get they'll get that nervous look in their face when we get ready to start a session, you know, and and they're like, so we're gonna be okay.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, well, first of all, one, I could I could photograph it on as any light possible.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Two, y'all think sunny beach days is like the perfect weather, and it's really not.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Like, this is where we are.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like photographers pray for clouds, man.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: You know, we need some soft diffuse, some diffused goodness, and you're not uh squinty, and and we got harsh light thingies, and it it's a whole thing.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So, you know.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I I know where you're going with this.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So um, I've been trying to get cash um cash, I'm calling you cash man over here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Hey, that could be a that's fine.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I'm used to that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say that could be a little handle for you on like a separate thing, just cash man.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that was my uh name in high school.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Right when I was in high school, everybody called me cash, yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: They called me cashman because we had there were so many Zachs in our school.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: So they always called them by their last name.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: So the name wasn't, you know, like the most notorious names were like Zach, Tyler, Chad, and Michael.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Um, I could probably name about 50 of each who we had in our school.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Well, man, I've been trying to get him back on the podcast.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He's uh, you know, life gets busy, we all just get very distracted, and I don't know what it is.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: You blink and it's another month.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: It's just happening quicker than usual, it seems like.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Um, for sure.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So for those who are hearing from Mr.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Zach for the first time, um, our recent conversation was basically the introduction of hey, how are you doing?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Um, the camera you're using, you know, how are you getting started, what's your passion, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So to fast forward to where we are now, um, I know you have a new we were we're rocking the Canon R5, is that right?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Uh the R6 Mark II, yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: R6, okay, cool.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I've been all over the board.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Uh I started on Nikon, then I went Canon.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I was Canon for 24 years, then I added the Fuji, and then from the Fuji, I just added a Sony um A7R5, the 60 meg file.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And I'm still rocking my Fuji.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Oh man, so I'm rocking um people think Fuji's on the lower end, which they wouldn't be if their focusing was as good as the Sony.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: If their focusing was as good as the Sony, it'd be a whole different context that we're talking about.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I love my Fuji, but I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I got the Sony just because I wanted to see what everybody's talking about, about how it nails focus, how it uh attracts the eye so much easier.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: I was just curious, what would what would that even be like on a job, you know?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Um all I can say is wow.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Just wow.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Now now it's way more in my hands as far as the user, the creator.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Um nine and a half times out of ten, it's a nail in those eyes.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Um the other half of a percent is you.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Were were you moving, breathing too fast?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Were you in motion when you were shooting?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It's like the camera can find focus, but if you're still not doing all the other things correctly, you're still gonna have a little motion blur, you're still gonna you know not see things as sharp.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: It's like you do need to follow the rules, you know.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Um, as far as whatever lens you that's on your camera, your shutter speed should be at least double the length of your lens on the zoom side.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And that's just something that you would think people know, but we don't, and even us who do, we you know, you're working, you're moving, you're jumping, you're smiling, you're laughing, you're cracking jokes, and the last thing I'm thinking about is my shutter speed being double my left, you know.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: So um anyway, I want to get you back on here because one, I wanted to get a life update from you on uh from our last conversation to where you are now, as far as um you know, and I do follow you, so I I've seen your progression.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I kind of sort of know where you are-ish.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Um you've definitely gotten better.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I definitely appreciate that.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And the the bigger reason why I wanted you back on here is because I'm I'm proving a point.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: You have gotten better.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: You didn't get better because of the camera.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: You got better because you have a better camera that can do more of what's in your brain quicker.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: It's still you doing the work.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Like you personally are getting better.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: You're seeing light better, your composition is way better.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Um you know, it's like sometimes we add things to the bag because it just helps us stay motivated, you know, and then if we're paying for something, it's like, okay, I need to get better at this so I can feel good about the purchase I made.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: So um, so take us, take us through the the day in the life of you as far as I know you have a day job, and then this is uh on your side, which is starting to unbalance out, I take it, you know, but catch the world up as far as your comedy following tours and all that good stuff.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: All right, so everything's been going good so far.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Uh basically with my work, it's just the same old, same old.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, but when it comes to the photography side, it's uh since the last time we talked, it was basically just about as dead as it could be up until I want to say May of this year.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: So I wasn't getting a lot of clients.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: I had the Rebel T6.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I you'd have to hook it up to like a computer or a phone to take pictures of yourself, so it wasn't as easy to have a flip-out camera, like the flip out uh L C D screen.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: So it was just hard to take pictures, and um one of the photos that I took that I posted on my platforms was a white BMW.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm not a car photographer, I don't do I just take pictures.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: I like I like photography in general, but I'm primarily a portrait photographer.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: So took a picture of that, sent it to my friend Levi, who is uh a photographer as well, and uh he was like that's really cool, and didn't think anything of it.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: He came over one day and showed me the fact that he had put it on his phone, which I thought was super sick.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, cool people I mean, someone's actually using my work.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Like, that's dope.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Um fast fast forward to May, nothing happened.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Still taking pictures.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Uh basically any sunny day that I have, I go out and take pictures because I have a flash, but I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best at flash photography.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Um, for those of you who are, I would lick the ground that you're walking on just to get a little bit of uh ingredient on what you're doing, but I'm getting there.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: But right, because it's just it's a I I want to learn how to do every aspect of photography, but that is just a different animal.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Plus, my uh flash that I have does not cooperate with my camera I have now.
- 8:33unknown: Really?
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: At all.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Which one you have now?
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: No, it uh I have it is it literally just says newer on it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: I got it off Facebook Marketplace and I I didn't come with a box or anything, so I don't know.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: I all I know is it limits you to one over 200 shutter speed, which is usually fine.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: But with my new camera, uh being able to control speed a little bit better and wanting those faster photos when there's quick movement, it doesn't really help unless someone is stationary.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Gotcha.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Gotcha.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I can help you with that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Alright, because yeah, it's that's been a whole animal.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: It really has.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Uh but like I said, fast forward to May, I my Levi comes over and he's like, I found a turtle on the side of the road.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Now let's just preface the fact that Zach doesn't like reptiles.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: I I I'm gonna be honest, and this is probably gonna hurt a lot of people's feelings.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I barely like animals.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: I'm a very like I am a cat, okay?
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I like attention when I want it.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Other than that, leave me alone.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Like, I've just I I'm not a fan.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I have a dog and like five cats, okay?
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Like, I have animals and I love them dearly, but um I I like my space.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So he's like, I have a turtle.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'm not, I'm not opening that box.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Like, he you can take it back where you found it.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'm not opening my box.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Well, come to find out he had uh he opens it because I won't.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: At this point, I'm literally we're at a standstill, okay.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: My wife is like sitting there like all antsy, and I'm like looking at her, I'm like, I don't know why you're antsy.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Well, they had configured back and forth because he wanted to give me a camera, and he ended up buying me the Hannon R6 Mark II.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Well, he hadn't done it since he's had the R5, he didn't know the difference between EF and RF.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: So he's like, put a lens on there, and like I've done my research.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I I was I've been a fanboy of the R6 Mark II since I heard about it, and I was like, I'll try to put the lens on.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'll just see if maybe one of my lenses are like above.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: I know it's not true, like it's not gonna happen.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: But uh he ended up picking me up to 24 to 105 LC.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Nice, and yeah, oh yeah, I was I I am also not a good gift receiver because when I'm in shock, I just I'm not laughing, I'm not happy, I'm not sad.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I say nothing.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: I just stare at whatever you put in my hands.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: You could hand me the keys to a million-dollar mansion, and we'll be sitting there for a minute before I say two words.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm just I'll just be holding the keys and looking up and holding the keys and looking up, and that's what I did.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: So, like we went out and we we did like photos, and the whole time I'm like, so when does he want when does he want this back?
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: I'm like, this obviously is not mine.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I'm like, this is this is not this is not real.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: I don't get gifts like this.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: I give gifts like this.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Right, like this is not something that happens to me.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Well, I asked him, I'm like, look, I I have to pay you back for this.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: And he's like, how about when it comes to weddings, you you just be my second.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: You just every wedding that I have, non-negotiable, you're my second.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: And I was just like, ew, that works.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I can do that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: I'm like, if I get a wedding, you're in it.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Easy.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Great experience too.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: That was it, yeah, it really is.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: I've got, with that being said, I've got three weddings this year with him, and then possibly one for myself.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: But other than that, that kind of catches us up to now.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: I realize that now that I have a hammer that is capable of not only photo but really high quality video, the content started getting better.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: I started putting more effort into learning how to do oh, don't forget the word now.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Um C log.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: C log three.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Learn how to do that, learn how to use zebras the whole nine trying to figure out how to make my content look like everybody else's content, but different.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: And then we can get into content later because there's a whole thing that is changing in content that I am on the back end of the coattail of trying to be high quality when people don't want that anymore.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: So that sucks.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: But I learned it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Don't ever phase, by the way.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Don't phase.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: There's one thing I've learned, and I've been true about this, okay?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Um, the basics never change.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: You know, the formats of why do zebras work, that your blacks and your whites, everything else in between will fall in into place.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: But as far as styles go, you just always rock what you like the most, but learn what the basic necessity is because fads and trends will change again.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know?
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So heck yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Let's go ahead.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, but yeah, so that kind of just I've been doing the content thing, and then the comedy studio picked up uh probably about two months after I got the camera.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Uh it was actually a friend of mine, uh, Tyler Statt.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: Uh his stage name is Tyler the comic.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: He's he's funny, dude.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: He's the whole group of people he works with are absolutely hilarious.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: But he had me meet him up at the Marquis on Marquee on Maine down in Festus, and that was just a meetup.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: We hadn't talked since high school.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: You know, I wasn't like I wasn't sure how this was going because he just kind of hit me up because he was like, hey, I'm looking for like a photographer to do comedy shows, and you know, it's I can't pay you much.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: He's like, but I can do like, you know, if you can just give me 25 to 35 photos, um, you know, like four or five of each comic.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: And you know, if we have more comics, two or three of each comic.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm not trying to ask, he's like, I know what your rates are.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: He's like, and I I don't want you to feel like I want you to do this for free.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And I was just like, Well, I'm not doing anything in the first place.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm just still taking pictures of myself, I'm learning a new camera.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Um, we do the first show.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: He I send him the gallery, and he's like, Oh, for sure.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: These are incredible.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Like, he's had three other photographers do this before me, and he's like, these are incredible.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: He's like, these are by far the best I've seen.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I was like, awesome.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't take that well when people tell me my work looks good.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: I'm just like, okay, you're just trying to pat me on the back so that when you turn around, you you know they look like trash.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: But like I I haven't gotten to the point where I can be like, yeah, my work is cool.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's like that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Well, no, I can do that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: My work is cool.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: I can say that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: But if someone's like, hey, how do you think about your work?
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: I'm like, eh, it's alright.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Mediocre at best.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: I'm like, like everybody that I know can probably do better than me by far in my area.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: But I'm also competing with people that have been doing this for 10 plus years.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: So like I'm still new.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about it.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tell you a secret in a minute, but go ahead and finish your story.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Nah, it's so it's been crazy.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: We've been starting to book more shows.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Uh last night we had a sold-out show for 260.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Uh I always want to call them clients, but it's uh uh what I don't even know what to call them.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Uh showgoers.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Crowd.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: The crowd was maxed out at 260.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: And it was probably the most electric like comedy show that I've been at.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: I'm like, we're in the middle of uh BF Nowhere um in Imperial, and we're surrounded by like union workers.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: They have like the sheriff's department in the front row, and we got like this uh Ebony Star.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: She's dude, she's hilarious.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: She gets up there and she's just telling them all these jokes about like white people this and white people that, and they are eating it up.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: And she's like, look, I'll pop my wig off.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: If y'all don't laugh at this next joke, I'll rob every single one of you.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: She's making all these jokes, and I'm sitting here thinking, I'm like, girl, you and me are the only ones in here that are like different color.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Can you please not piss off all these people?
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'm running expired tags on my car, and there's sheriff's department right there.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Don't don't piss them off.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: But they loved her, they loved the entire show.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: They to the point where Tyler was like uh the coordinator of the Elks Lodge was like, we want you guys back next year for this event.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: So that's basically my life in a nutshell is just been going to a crappy day job that I don't like, and then having something to look forward to with photography, along with the fact that I don't like that my kid is now two years old.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I don't like it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: I'll be the first to tell you.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I hate it.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: I love how smart she is.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: I hate it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: It sucks.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: It's weird.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: I I want my kid to still be in the bassinet sleeping next to me on the side of the bed.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I'm not, I'm not okay with she tells me no constantly.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: I'm like, look, you tell me no one more time, you're not getting the apple slices.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I'm not slicing up this apple if you tell me no one more time.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: It's not happening.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: She is always gonna be your uh she's the example of outside life inside of your house.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: And kids thrive.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Trust me, man.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: I have three.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Three kids.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Kids thrive on structure, you know, and the the the smallest word the smallest word that means the most to them, and oh, you know, it goes against the grain of what they want, and um, that's okay.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, but they need to understand who who's the parents, and you'll be their friends later.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Trust me, I get it, dude.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: They grow up fast.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Mine's uh one's out of college, one's almost out of college, and the last one is uh junior in high school.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So it's weird.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: I'm not ready for that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: It's weird, it's weird.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: You're never ready for it.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: You know, no, and they make you do so much different stuff.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Like, I'll be the first to tell you.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: I was so I don't know if I can cuss on here, so I try to keep a PG, but I am for all my future clients out there, I am never this PG.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: Like when I said BF, I would have said BF nowhere.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not afraid.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Like you're talking to a blue-collar dude, like I cuss all the time, but it's like they change you so much.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: I was such an a-hole when I was like in a relationship with my wife, not to her, but just to people.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I was an a-hole to myself, like I didn't take care of myself, and it's like as soon as my kids started getting two, and I realized that my fat a-hole self couldn't keep up with her, it was like, okay, she not only needs structure, she needs to see that somebody can be an absolute animal and be stuck to discipline.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Well, here I am.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: I wake up at four, I wake up at 4 a.m.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: I eat the same meal every morning, I meal prep at night, I go to the gym, I'm taking care of myself, and I have enough energy to keep up with this little turd.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And she sometimes gets shocked that I'm still back there chasing her around the house.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: She's like, Oh, you're still moving.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: I, you know, like, yeah, kid, you might have a lot more energy, but I have longer strides than you.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: You're running.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: I'm walking.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: I ain't gotta run.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: That is so cool.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kids will definitely um hold you to higher standards, you know.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: If you can't for sure.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: I needed it too.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, dude, we all do.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: We all do.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: You know, my my son, he's um I got him into working out uh a couple years ago before he was when he had eighth grade is high school now.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: So when he was a freshman, he was like, I think I want to start doing the gym, and I was like, and we have one not far from the house.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Well, let me go with you.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Let me show you how to do resistance uh training because it's uh it'll last you your whole life.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: It makes the most sense.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: And you'll say, um, you know, this dude, good lord, he does not have my genetics, he has her dad's genetics.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: So he's always hit a toy pack, even if it was skinny.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: They've always been there.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: I know he's a little bastard.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: He's a little bastard.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but now he's 16, we'll have you know his shirt off, and and I was like, dude, when you saw going to the gym, you're already skinny.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Like anything you do is gonna show.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: It's like, good for you.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, good for you, you better he's like, Well, you can do it too.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, no.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, we could.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: I'm like, but the weight that you have to push to get any kind of muscle show, we gotta push triple that.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: You can bench 90 pounds, we gotta bench 250.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it ain't the same there, so it ain't the same.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Like just today we went for a three-mile walk and uh did my thing and inside it's so hot over there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Here in New Orleans, still, I mean it's beautiful today, but you know, the sun's the sun.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I'm inside with my shirt off, trying to cool down.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And he's like, I guess you're definition now.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I'm like, isn't it a shame that now you can see definition?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: That was six months ago.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm like, but thank you.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: I said any any any um affirmations of the work makes you want to just do more of the work.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Well, dude, that is really cool.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Um, first of all, being able to go with anybody else who's been doing this for a long time, is you know, when you're his second, um, I mean, I know you've learned a lot.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: I know you've you've been in these situations that we talked about before, as far as every building's gonna be different, all the lighting's gonna be different, like you're gonna constantly be thinking.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, you know.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Um, are you a manual shooter or you're an aperture priority kind of shooter?
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm manual.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: But here's the thing I'm a manual shooter with aperture priority.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: So I keep my camera in manual, but I usually adjust the shutter speed in the ISO.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: So that's why I that's why I'm I'm still manual.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: I never move my camera off of it.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Even like I just don't, but I still technically do aperture priority.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, especially if you're you know, people always ask me, you there's no way in hell you're doing manual like shooting outside during the day.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you're you're you're not completely wrong, but yeah, no, I do.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: They said, there's no way the sun moves, the clouds move, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I tried to go back to a program of I had a wedding a few months ago, two months ago, literally.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And it was how why they got married at two o'clock, I have no idea in the world.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: I think it was just for a cheaper price.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Gross.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Dude, I was I was literally I was hating life, and I'm sitting and going, let's see how aperture party works.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Well, it's definitely gonna be picking a faster shutter, so I shouldn't worry about that.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: I'll do this.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Man, every time I turned somewhere, if it was towards the shade or to this and that or blah blah blah, it was doing some things that I didn't want it to do.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I'm I'm just quick on my manual.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: I just am, you know?
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you know, and it's not like I did that I disliked the images when I got back home.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: It's just when you're working, it it it it's amazing how you work better when you feel good about what you're getting, you know?
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because when you're frustrated about your settings, you're thinking about your settings, and then you're not in the moment.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: You know, I like just being in a moment.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: I love to guide that ship.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And uh, I know I'm a madman.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Trust me, it's it's not always fun.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Inside, all day long, manual.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: You're crazy if you're working any kind of program inside of a building.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: All right, yeah, no, right.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: No, you just need manual.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: No.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: So is that camera full frame or not?
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is uh full frame.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: I believe it is twenty four.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: No, it's twenty-six point two or twenty-four point six megapixels full frame.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I my my Fuji's around there, and uh, I've always said, I said, man, it's kind of like the sweet spot on the files, it really is.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if if the damn thing would nail if that thing would just freaking nail focus on the face every damn time, I wouldn't really need any more.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: But then when I was shopping, since all these other camera models have come out, that R5 um came down, you know, and to get the R5, I forget how much I got it for, like let's just say 2800.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: It was less than what it was when it first came out, that's for damn sure.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, so it has the 60 meg on the full raw, but I can shoot lower than that on the raw.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: So to even have that leniency was attractive to me, you know.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And oh yeah, Sony's still Sony, you know, its video is still damn good.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: You know, I wouldn't use it for a main video camera, but for me, doing hybrid work, it's perfect, it's amazing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but main so so let's talk about um so first of all, I'm proud of you so much for doing the comedy stuff because um putting yourself in odd scenarios that you've never done before will always make you grow a hundred times faster.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I uh yeah, just the fact that when so I for instance, the marquee on man, uh, I can use 2,000 ISO for the stage, 8,000 ISO for the crowd.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: The last show I did last night, I had to bump that mug up to 20,000 ISO for the crowd, so I didn't even take crab.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: I was like, these photos are gonna suck.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: I'm not taking 20,000 ISO photos, I'm just not.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: So my ISO for the stage was 6,400.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: So it throws you off.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: Like you like as soon as I walked in and the lights were on in this building, I told Tom, I'm like, have them turn the lights off now.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Well, we can't, we don't have control of it.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, this is BS.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Like, I need to know how to get my settings before this thing takes off because I'm also running the video camera.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: So I'm running his Sony ZEVT.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm uh dude, I have moved up a lot since I started with this.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: I was just a photographer.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Now I'm moving up into being a photographer and videographer.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: I do content.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Like that that goes into a whole nother topic that I wanted to talk to you about, but we can talk about that one later because that's something I think a lot of photographers need to take into consideration.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Oh god, yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Um heck yeah, man.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: That's what I do a lot of, believe it or not.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I've I do way, way, way more hybrid work um than just two years than just two years ago.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: And it's just because people are getting used to the fact of what they they know we can do or it's available, and they assume centric good, then you must be good at all of these things, you know.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: And my my question is always, you know, so what exactly do you need?
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Do you need video clips or do you need like long form video?
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Because if it's long form, it's either it's gonna be on a tripod and here it goes, or do you want somebody walking around long form while I'm taking pictures?
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: That's two different things, you know?
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, so I have that Osmo Pocket 3, and I love my pocket three, however, it hit the ground.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Somebody knocked over knocked a table into this bigot.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: I had a big stand, dude, like a big 15-foot light stand.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: I was doing a time lapse on a setup outside, and the um the workers outside was moving a table, and they hit the stand hard enough to where the whole thing fell over and went to the ground.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: And you would think from that kind of level, it was up a good nine feet, 10 feet.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Um, I thought the whole thing would have just been destroyed.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: No, the damn gimbal and everything works fine.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: It's the weird that thing looks delicate.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: It's actually way more durable than you realize.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: However, uh, the screen, the flippy-dippy screen, when you turn it on and off, yeah.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: That screen cracked and I can't use it.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: So I have to, you know, luckily it does connect Bluetooth to the phone on the app, and that I have to connect to every single time I go to use it.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: So I've been browsing these newer deals, and a buddy of mine told me he got that um 360 Luma.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Um he he showed me a video from that thing, and I was like, This looks graded.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: He's like, mm-mm.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: It has presets that's just cinema four or whatever, and I just go.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Like, this is this is our de camera.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: And that that kind of blew me away.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, hmm, okay.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Think about the give me one of these suckers.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Because man, oh yeah, it's just so good.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: People are yeah, people are even using those for behind the scenes videos now.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: People are using people who stopped using, they haven't stopped, but they've been slowing down if they don't have the meta glasses.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, come on, people, if you have a uh GoPro, your phone, uh the Luma, the DJI, why would you go and spend another like 800 hours on a pair of glasses that most people never even need unless you're me, because I wear glasses.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, people are putting those, they're using the cages, the smaller cages, and mounting them to the top of that because you can lay it flat, and then the gimbal will just be facing out, and they use that for behind the scenes.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Like, that's a that's a game changer.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, your camera's gonna be heavier, but it's a game changer.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, dude, I love my little cage.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: I call it my my my little roll cage.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: It's what I got for my Sony because I knew I was gonna be using that for video as well.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: And um of two guys I worked with on a commercial gig, he was the photographer for DraftKings, and um that was his rig.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: He had the roll cage, I called it, and uh some other cameras and lights and his mic, and it just made sense.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: It all it just made sense, it's all on you, it's right there, you know.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: So when I went shopping for um my Sony, I got it on my birthday last year, so this December makes uh one year with this camera.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: And dude, oh man, it is a it is another beast.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Um as far as a buddy of mine at shot Sony, he loves the Sony's.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: He's the one that kind of got me into getting a Sony.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: I wasn't going to because they're glass and all are so freaking expensive.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: And he and he got me.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what?
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I can return it.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I can always return it if I don't like it, if it's too much, blah blah blah blah blah blah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Um holy crap, I love my damn Sony.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: When I tell you I think finds the eyes, you have to practice the focusing modes, like on your own time before you go out in a real client, because Sony's focusing modes act way different than the focusing I was used to from past cameras.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but man, once it makes sense to you, oh god, dude.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Like, holy cow, that 60 meg file.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: And I have worked with the medium format 100 meg file from Fuji to GFX system for some big commercial gigs.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Dude, that file is ridiculous.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: That's it that that's it has no purpose in everyday life.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: It really doesn't.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Like the purpose is I I'm a firm believer that you you you should have tools according to how you're gonna use them.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: You know, it makes more it makes the most sense.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: And I'll be the first one to tell you when I leave this camera on 60 megs, um a lot of times it's overkill.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't be shooting candids at 60 megs.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that's overkill.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Uh but here's the cool part I have one button on the top set to uh half the file size.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: It becomes like a it's like a APC file, APSC APC mode is what it what it calls it.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: So I click the button, and yes, it zooms in a pinch, but then it makes it half the size of the raw.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: So it just makes it really easy to go ahead and work.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Um so anyway, uh I've been I've been digging at the colors are great, the raw files are ridiculous, but where man, you were saying something a minute ago, and I wanted to piggyback on what you were saying.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Um what would what were you learning with the video stuff that's a newer style?
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, so like with content.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: So I I learned with create like you see all these guys, and it's it's a hard, it's a it's a fine line between being a photographer and just being a content creator with a camera.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: But uh I've started if you watch the videos, you see their crispiness of the video, you see the color grid.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: You know, they're not just recording it like straight out of the HD of your camera.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Like if it's not an MP4, it's a Rec 709.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: They're using C log, S log, I think uh, what is it?
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Like they're using, I don't know all the other cameras, mainly the ones that I know people use to record video are S log and C log.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: So and DJ D D log, I think it's for DJI.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: I think it's D log, something like that.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: But like I started realizing that like you have to if you want your content to be more noticeable, that you want it to look commercial, you want it to look like it's something that has been a mad production, like something that actually took time to create, even if it only took you just slapping the um the preset to get it from your rec 709 to whatever log it is.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: So for me, it's C log3 with the R6.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: So I put the R6, uh C log 3 over it, changes the color to what it actually looks like, but then you do all this work, and then you realize that the fad that's coming in is people want authenticity.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: So now a lot of content is going back to just being recorded on your phone, and I'll be the first to say F that.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Um, I just learned how to do this.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: You're not going to get me to stop.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't believe that authenticity takes away from the creative coloring or beautiful like textures and feeling of a video just because you want it to be authentic.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: If you want to be authentic, turn your camera on in C log or S log or whatever log you have and just talk to your camera.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: It's the same freaking thing as if you're talking to your cell phone, except oh, wait, you can actually color grade it.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Truth instead of putting it in cap instead of putting it in cap cut or whatever uh editing software you have and putting some kind of like color over it that's gonna make it look weird.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: Usually cheap.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: I call it cheap.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know that like getting a rec 709 to move over because most softwares have like Final Cut Pro.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: You can have this on it, it reads uh C log S log.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: It has all of them listed in it already, so you don't really pay anything.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: But I think it's cheap when your video looks like you just threw a cap cut preset or effect.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: I think that's what they call it, an effect over it.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: You could actually color grade it, like you could have cut done something, but yeah, your your content is definitely going back in reverse, just like everything else.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Phones have gotten bigger when they used to be big, some of them are going back smaller how they used to be small, so it's reverted back to its original, but yeah, yeah, learning the video side of has just been a lot easier than it used to be.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, pause for a second.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Hey, so let me ask you uh a buddy of mine, I was talking about Lightroom, and I was like, why is Lightroom slow?
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: This there's two aspects of Lightroom that just boggles my brain.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Like when I had to export 400 images, now granted it's 400 images, um, but it was taking so flipping long.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: And he's like, dude, let me ask you a question.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Why do you use Lightroom?
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: I said, Well, what do you mean?
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: I said, I was using Capture One.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: I said, I do like Capture One better than Lightroom.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: I said, I've just been giving Lightroom a chance, I guess.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: And he goes, No, no, no.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: He goes, think about it.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Why do you really use Lightroom?
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I don't know, I don't know where you're going, where you're going with this.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: He goes, I use Bridge.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: I said, Oh my.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: I said, I haven't used Bridge in a decade.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Like, really?
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: He goes, Bridge operates off of your camera raw.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: Lightroom does not.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: I'm like, huh?
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: He goes, Lightroom is basically like a third party, right?
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: It's another step to operate your stuff, whereas bridge is direct.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, get out of here.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: He goes, trust me on this.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: Try it out tonight, go open a bridge, go mess with it.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: He goes, Lightroom, you need to import a session.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: I said, right.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: He goes, you don't need to with bridge.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, so that's capture one.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Capture one, I can just click on a folder and boom, there's my ROS.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: I can click on a folder, I can see him, I can work on them.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: And he's like, that's what Bridge does.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: He's like, people use Lightroom because it's pretty.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: He's like, Bridge does all the same stuff, but it's not pretty, but it is quicker.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: I'm like, get out of here.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: So do you use Lightroom?
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Well, I use so there's different ver there's different tiers apparently now.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Room, which is what I use, and that's the cloud base, and then you have Lightroom and Classic.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I don't I'm not I don't do classic.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: I should.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: A lot of people say I like the mobile version because it can be linked up to all of my devices.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: So I that's my thing.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: I like so for me, like on my break at work, I'm gonna have next month.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: I don't I'm I work day job, so I need to have time to be able to edit lightly throughout my day, so that's why I use my phone.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: I could take my laptop, could, but I really don't want to take my laptop too, Jim.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I hear you.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: I'll take my iPad, right?
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: I'll take my iPad though.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I am classy.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: But even then, it's still linked up.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Well, that's good to know.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Um, I was I was so I just just for shits and giggles, I got on Bridge the other night and I got the laptop on me in bed.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Um, wifey wanted to go bed earlier than I was ready to go to go down for, and I was like, I'll come lay in bed, I'll I'm gonna I'm checking something out.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: And um, to my surprise, you know how you click auto for white balance and exposure just to see what auto even gives you, you know, and see what the starting point is.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: Um bridge's auto is definitely better than Lightroom's auto.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: I that I can definitely tell you.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: It's wild.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was kind of impressed, man.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Um, I do like capture one.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: His theory was this he's like, man, everybody wants money out of your pocket these days.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you're not lying.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: He's like, so that's how I dove back into Bridge.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: He goes, Bridge is free, bridge comes with Adobe.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: He goes, I was messing with it, and then I was realizing XYZ.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: He's I've been using Bridge like for the longest time now.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: He says, it's just it's too easy, it's too quick.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: It does all the same presets.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: You can load all your stuff.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: He's like, it's it's wild.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: I said, okay.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: So I went and messed with it.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: And um, I'm not lying, dude.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Bridge was so much quicker and easier.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: If I had a wedding to mess with, I could probably finish the whole wedding in one sitting with bridge.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's one of those things you gotta go mess with it.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Just go go play.
- 41:20unknown: All right.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's in um, yeah.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: You have Photoshop, right?
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, it comes you you have yo are you only paying for light room or are you paying for Photoshop also?
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: I think I have the mobile version of both.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: See if um I I started off on my iPad.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, who who hasn't?
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, these days as mobile as possible is where things are.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: So um right, I'm like you.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: I'm sitting and going looking at my next step as far as what could I be doing?
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, dear lord, if I could uh if I had an iPad and I can work on getting stuff done when I'm not sitting behind the computer, that does change your life as far as your speed.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, it does for sure.
- 42:05unknown: Oh, yeah.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: You know, and it's and it's cloud-based, so you get behind your computer and it updates off the cloud and boom, export, go.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: You know, that's neat.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's perfect.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Very neat.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Um, what else I want to tell you, man?
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Blah blah blah.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Like, what did I what have I been doing?
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: I've been doing so much, is the thing.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: Like this past summer I dove into well AI for one thing.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: Um but that's a whole nother podcast.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: That's another rabbit hole.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a deep rabbit hole.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: I can blow your mind though.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Um I learned a lot of good stuff, it does work, things are amazing, but yeah, 100% another podcast.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: Um so tell me, I'm so glad you're doing the comedy strip, and it's gonna take you beyond, just like you girls saying, how about doing my wedding?
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you, meeting people and getting in front of people, I think is the hardest part these days.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's what I want to ask you.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: With your TikTok, are you making any money off of your actual TikToks?
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Or is it just your advertising piece?
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: It's just advertising.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: Look, dude, so you have all these fancy gurus that are like, oh, you know, start your videos off like this and do this for your video for your people to follow.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: Look, here's simple, here's the simplest thing I can say to you, and it's gonna hurt some feelings.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: If you're posting content and it ain't going anywhere, you boring.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're boring.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Literally, if you want to get if you want to go quote unquote viral, which I'm not even viral, you got 3,400 followers, that's not viral.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: It's just a dude who's put the time in.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: But like if you want to be viral and you want to do content, there's two avenues you can go.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: You can do authenticity, you can just be yourself and not care what other people think.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: Or you You can chase viral and you're gonna get viral at some point and hate the fact that your content isn't what you want it to be.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: But yeah, no, I uh I use it strictly for advertising because the money you can make, you have to do that.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Uh like the you'll see the little orange thing at the bottom, and it'll be like, oh, look at this brand new camera bag that I found.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, that's great.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have to do that.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not trying to do TikTok shop.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: I don't got time for that.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: So no, I don't make money off nothing.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: Now, Tyler, he is monetizing the content that I make for him via video and photo, and he uses that to help pay me for the shows.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: But I mean, other than that, I don't monetize squat, I just use it for advertising and trying to reach more people.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: Um, also, biggest thing I can say for photographers, stop making your content for photographers.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: If you've noticed on my content, I switched it.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: I I like photographers.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I love photographers.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Photographers are me, okay?
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: But photographers aren't going to pay me.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Clients are going to pay you.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: Make content towards clients.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: How what to do for a session?
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: You know, what do you what do you how to reach out to a photographer, how to search for a photographer, something that will help a client, because again, people like to learn things.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, people don't care about your, you know, uh hassle blad camera and what specs it has.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: People don't, regular folk don't care.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, your clients don't care what camera you use.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: Like I asked, I I I did it with one of my clients once.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: I was like, hey, do you know what kind of camera I'm using?
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: And they're like, that one?
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: They don't care.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: People clients don't care about your camera.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: They don't.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: They know.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: The reason why I was asking, because yesterday I was my damn feed, it the damn algorithm keeps putting photographers in front of me.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, why?
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Because I waited five seconds to hear what they're gonna say, and then you're gonna keep feeding me more these.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: It's like I don't need more photographers in my feed.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: But then as I'm browsing, I'm sitting going, let me talk about this from a business angle for a second here.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Photographers showing off how they do what they do are 99% of the times talking to other photographers.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Now, I agree with you.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: Quite a few of these people do have something to sell.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: A class or a PDF or whatever the hell.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have something to push, and that's why they're talking to photographers.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: I get that part.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: But if you don't have anything to sell to photographers, then are you really just showing off to other photographers?
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Because I agree with you.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: The bride is not looking you up.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: That's that's not what they're you know, you know what I'm saying?
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: So that's what I was kind of getting at as far as man, so many damn photographers are like, look, man, don't think it's the wrong way, and no offense.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: But from a business standpoint, I don't care if other photographers in my area I educate or not.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: That's not my job, and uh there's no responsibility in that.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: It's just a an ego thing, you know?
- 47:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh social media is a pissing contest.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: And it used to so when I started doing content, I didn't register that it was a pissing contest until I s like until I got a mirrorless because I was such I was such a a a Debbie Downer with my camera.
- 47:47SPEAKER_02: The T6 is a great camera for like beginner 100%.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Start on something and push its limits, just like you would buy a Prius.
- 47:55SPEAKER_02: And yeah, well, maybe you wouldn't buy a Prius, but like you buy a Prius for a racetrack, you're gonna push that little 300 horsepower thing as hard as you can go until you can get control of it, and then you can go to like a Corvette or Camaro.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: Or music.
- 48:08SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: But like I you have to, it's a great starter camera, but I wanted more because I knew what I wanted to do.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: I knew that things were going to lead up more.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: So, of course, every time I saw something about that camera on social media, I was like, okay, cool.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: This is something new I didn't know.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: Cool, put that in the tool bag.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: I'll learn that once I can afford to get one.
- 48:26SPEAKER_02: I got one.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: Now I see everybody else is making content about the same camera, and they're making content about the Canon R6V.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: It's a fancy video camera that competes with the FX30 or FX3.
- 48:38SPEAKER_02: Awesome, cool.
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: Fissing contest.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: Somebody's making a video, not even describing what it does, but they're just saying, Hey, look what I just bought.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, dude, like we get it.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: I made the video too.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: I'll be the I'll be the first prick to tell you I made the video too, but at least mine was different.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: I was saying thanks to the guy that bought it for me.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: It wasn't one of those things where I was like, look what I just bought, because I'm not gonna do that.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just it's different.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: Like, I get the unboxing videos.
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: That is different when you're when you see the photographer and they're doing the unboxing and you can see the genuine like emotion.
- 49:12SPEAKER_02: Again, photographers, we can see that better than regular people can see that.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: We can see it.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: So, like, even in video format, like I can tell whether someone's being genuine or whether it's just like they're reading off like a script, which I have done, done that a lot for content because it's just easier.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: But yeah, no, it's uh it is a pissing contest.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: But I will still say to this day, the photography community is still less toxic than the gaming community, the sports community, like any community out there, their photography community, you we are so much less toxic to other photographers.
- 49:50unknown: Really?
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Now, videographers, videographers, I will say always have no offense to video guys.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: I love you guys just as much as a photographer can other videographer.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: You guys sometimes get sticks in your butts about how we do things, especially in the wedding format.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: Because I'll be the first to say talking to a lot of wedding photographers and videographers.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: I hear the same thing.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Photographers just get the main stick the entire time.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Well, video is always in the way.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: And it's like here's the thing clients will buy photos and photography before they will do it for video.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: Just throwing that out there.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: I know that's weird, and it's probably gonna ruffle some feathers, but that's the fact of it is people want photos because I have my wedding video out there.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: Guess how many times we've watched it?
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: Probably twice.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: How many times have we looked at our wedding photos?
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: A lot.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: We printed out a lot.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: I gotta say, the the one thing that we watch every year, and this is way back before it was even popular, like like a buddy of mine who was in the actual film world, um, he was a casting director, and he was doing this on the side and became his career doing video for weddings, and that's how I met him.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: Um, but when he did our wedding, he created um a montage, you know, a holiday video basically.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: But this was back before anybody was really doing it, you know.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: It was like, okay, cool, a little 20-minute video.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: That'd be kind of cool.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: I hadn't we had no idea how much we would like that more than the whole thing.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: We watched the whole thing, I think, once.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Like once, and then fast-forwarded on the second time.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: And then from here on out, every single anniversary, we put that little highlight video in, and wifey gets to see herself come down the aisle with the trumpets, and it's a it's just running through the day quick, you know, it's like three songs worth, and um, that's what we watch every single year, and the kids get to watch us um look younger and younger every year because we're getting older and older.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my dad, you had hair, you had hair, you know, that kind of thing.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: But um, but you're not wrong.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: You're not wrong.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: And what I don't understand about um content creators, social media people that are now doing the gig.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I've had a couple with me on jobs, and you're you're right.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: We do love working with each other, and the the the better oh, for sure.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: The the better outcome for the client should be the end goal, you know, it's not an ego contest every time.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: Every time.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: But I can say this it's this is a lost world right now on the social media thingy.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: And if there's a videographer there and me doing stills, content creators are supposed to be more like behind the scenes kind of stuff, you know.
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: You shouldn't be doing the job of the video guy.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: You just shouldn't.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, we're opening this up.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, Jesus.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: We're opening this up.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, dude.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, you want me?
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, do you remember who you're talking to?
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: I am the king of making people's feelings get hurt.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: Man, it's like you know your place, man.
- 52:49SPEAKER_00: This is not your place.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Yep, come on.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: So, okay, I will give them this.
- 52:54SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: It is their place because people nowadays are so attention short span that they want that content aspect for their social medias.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: But here's the thing content creators, when you show up, now this is mainly just for weddings.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: You show up to a wedding, if you have a DJI pocket Osmo, if you have a full frame or ASPC camera, get the hell out.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: You do you show up with a cell phone because that is what content was built off on.
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: You don't show up with what the professionals, and I and I say that harshly, the professionals, because no offense, anybody can pick up a phone and make content these days.
- 53:33SPEAKER_02: Not everybody can take the time and understand how to frame, how to color grade, how to understand like people just listening to this are like, why were they talking about zebras earlier?
- 53:43SPEAKER_02: What does that have to do with anything for cameras?
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: Because you don't know.
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Because you don't know, you don't know what zebras are, you don't know what C log is.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: The videographers that are listening to this probably still hate me for what I said earlier, but I don't care.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm giving you the pat on your back.
- 53:57SPEAKER_02: You guys know what C log3 is, you guys know what Sony, uh, S log, all that.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: You guys use that.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: A content creator is not going to use that, so it's very simple.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: You can show up with a small rig, phone mount, your cell phone, and you can record stuff, and you have to be able to talk to your photographer and the videographer there.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because it's it's a hierarchy.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: Vendor table has already said this.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: There is a hierarchy, and it sucks, but it's photography, video, and then you're the new guy.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: It's you are the little guy on the totem pole.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: It's contract, man.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, and look, I don't care if somebody's there doing their third-party, third eye, you know, behind the scenes angle.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: I am all about that.
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: Let's just cover the crap out of this for these for these people.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: I'm totally game.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: But when you're coming to get the same lay flat shots that me and the videographers are doing, you're not doing the social media side of things then.
- 54:54SPEAKER_00: Now you're trying to do our job.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: No, you're copying.
- 54:56SPEAKER_00: You're copying.
- 54:57SPEAKER_00: I went to one social media, um, one content creative website, and I'm not lying.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: It looked like a videographer's website because they were getting all of the same stuff, which is basically kind of sort of copyright infringement, as far as you didn't set it up, you didn't pose it, it's not your content.
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: Just because you get it captured doesn't mean you created it.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: And that's a whole nother ball of wax.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: A whole nother no whole nother full podcast talking about this kind of stuff.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: But in a friendly world of let's all just get along and work together, I just need content creators to know their true place.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: And it's not dissing anybody, it's giving you permission to own that space.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: It's giving you permission.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm the I'm the I'm the behind the scenes person.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: Y'all stay y'all stay front forward.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stay behind the scenes.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: Let me rock what I do, y'all do what y'all do.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: It's just respect.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: But to be I had the contact creator person right next to me while I'm taking pictures to get my angle.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: The video was even like, why is this person here?
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, just ask, just ask them to move out the way if they're in your way.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: You know, and it's like go be behind the scenes, like go do the cool angles, go do the things that they're not gonna get from us.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: Like, that's what they're paying for, right?
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: You know, so for sure.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: Anyway, it's like for me, this is my thought process, and I'm not a sports person, so this is a stretch for me.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, so bear with me, people who are sports people, but like it would it would be like you know, the content creator going on the same court as like Kobe and LeBron and expecting that they're gonna get the same recognition is Kobe and LeBron.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: You're not okay.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: You have a different, you're gonna you're not gonna be point guard, you might be whatever the other spots are.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: I don't know, you're not center or something.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know, sports dude.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna uh you know, so but you're not gonna be there.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: You you have to, and the cool thing with this is it's simple.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: What happens with videographers and photographers on what it is for all vendors?
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: You end up doing stuff for these other vendors.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: You might take a photo of the videographer.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: Well, now they you know they might catch a video of you posing or fine, and you can share that stuff, so it's not like we can't do that with content creators, and content creators can do that with us too.
- 57:21SPEAKER_02: And I've known that there have been some in our area that do that, they will work with you and they'll like they'll take quick little snippets of you, and you'll take a photo of them and you can share that amongst vendors.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: So it's not like we don't have camaraderie, like it's no different than like being like that friendly rival, like you know, right?
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: That we have the cubs like for baseball.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: We have the cubs, we are like very big rivals, and I'm not a baseball fan either, so leave me alone.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: But like my wife tells me all the time, well, cubs are our rivals.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I don't care, I just don't care.
- 57:53SPEAKER_02: But it's the same aspect, you know.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: We're all we photo and video have always been kind of like that rivalry kind of thing.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Like we want the main, we want to control the day.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: Like we want to be in control if there is no person doing a timeline we want in control of that day.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: But it's like at the end of the at the end of the wedding, we're all like outside, you know, like smoking a cigarette, talking about the day, having fun, relaxing, like the hard parts over, then we go our separate ways.
- 58:23SPEAKER_02: We send each other like, hey, I got a photo of you, you know, working, and then we're like, I got a little quick video of you working.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: So it's camaraderie, but there's still that, like, hey, you know, you got the two big dogs at the wedding, and they're like, Who's this who's this kid with the camera?
- 58:40SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 58:41SPEAKER_02: Or who's this kid with the phone?
- 58:42SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: Don't don't show up with a full frame camera because you're gonna be pit you're gonna be pissing off the videographer.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, do not do that.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: I I cannot stress that enough.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: Content stays on the phone.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: If you want to do the fancy video stuff, get a get a full frame camera and label yourself videography.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm I'm a little confused, and you know, and again, I am all for and I even asked my video friends because when they were originally discussing about this new current content creative thingy, this is like two years ago.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: And um, my question was, well, how come you guys didn't um jump on this bandwagon first?
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Like it's part of video, so why didn't y'all come up at some angle of doing this?
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: If it's just getting something to done quick, I mean, use your own damn phone and just get used to it.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm confused on why the videography world didn't jump on this first before somebody was able to make it an extension of the business, capitalize on that, and then push videographers aside because they can, you know.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: And I think they were all just more uh protective of the long form video they were doing and looking at the short form as far as not just being trash, but you know, it is a whole different mindset to do the short form than it is the long form.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: Um but there's ways around that.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: But that's not what happened.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: So my thing is let's let's just have a little clarity on what the event is really about.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: First of all, I still don't believe anybody's wedding should be some big ass photo shoot.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: You know, um this is definitely another podcast we gotta do, but as far as other vendors paying people to be there on site to get images for the simple reason that working photographers or videographers or even content creative people are not providing things for the other vendors like the florist or even the food, the caterers, or whoever it is, and they're feeling obligated to hire somebody because they need the advertising too.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: So it's just become it becomes out of hand.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: And at the same time, I do understand it's not fair for for videographers and photographers to just off automatically have more on a on our plate for for the sake of other people need things, but we're not being compensated for it.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: Like that's a whole it is a whole nother conversation.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: I do understand both sides.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: I've been doing this for three decades.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: I always, always, always get business cards from people I haven't worked with before.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: So I can send them images usually the next day, which is on a Sunday.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: It's like, hey, these two these two cool shots of you are awesome.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: Please tag me on Instagram when you use them.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: I get the biggest threat.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: Nobody ever sends me anything, and I'm like, why?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, well, that's them, not me.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: Well, all right, you know, right?
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: Go ahead.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: I think that's just the difference of like working with the same vendors.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like if you were to work with the same vendors and build that like relationship, it would be different.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: But when you're working with a vendor that you've never worked with, and you literally have a like a four-hour period to get to know them, agreed, and you barely get to know them, they're not they're less likely to do that because they're like, okay, I have this task to do, what I was hired to do.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_02: Is you know, I have to finish this mission, it's simple, you get the video, get out.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: But I also think that when it comes to like what you were saying with like everybody bringing in like someone to get content for them, I think people are forgetting the massive reason people get married is not for right, right?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: Our job, look, our job is simple as a photographer, get photos, be the person that handles the monster or the fat the monster uh, what is it, monster-in-law and the monster father-in-law, or uh Uncle Kenny who gets a little too drunk and gets a little handsy.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: Those are the people that's what we do.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: That, and if there's no uh person to do a timeline, we handle that.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: We try to keep things moving.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: So we wear a lot of hats for the most part, and sometimes I don't think we choose to.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: I think it's just the photographers in the past, like you, have set the precedence of what photographers are meant to do now, and it's our generation or my generation, the generation below me that is like, okay, we can do these things.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_02: I'm like, but there's also people you can hire to do this, you're not you're not paying us to do these things.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: I'm like, if you need me to bounce somebody out of your your dressing room, you got it.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_04: You you got me here.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: You know, I I spent my whole life wanting to bounce people out of buildings.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: So let's do it.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm game.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: I'll take pictures, I'll take pictures while I'm carrying them out.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Do you want those?
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_02: I'll give them to you.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Oh man, I have so many stories.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: God, I have so many stories.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: So many stories.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you one story, okay?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: I um it was the first time I was working with my buddy Dave doing video who did our wedding on the highlight.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: This was like the third job I did.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: Uh a buddy of ours, he would hire me to do photography on weddings that he didn't do himself, so I was that guy.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: And then Dave would usually be doing video with me.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_00: And one time we had to go out to a house out in the world east, and we're in this um neighborhood that we're not normally in.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: And we go up to the front door, and you know, we both are in our suits and we got our gear on.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_00: This is way back in the film days, too, by the way.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: Um so behind the door, you're hearing, I mean, oh my god, I wish I could do like another another voice.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: Can I?
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_00: Can I do the voice?
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_00: Where are we?
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: Uh is this the voice?
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: So behind the door.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: Hey! What are you talking about?
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_00: You crazy.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna- Oh, you ain't gonna do nothing.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Out of the blue, you'd hear like a plate hit the wall.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: Like crashing.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: Oh hell no.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_00: And and this is at night, by the way.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: You know, the sun's gone.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_00: Oh hell no.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_00: Dave looks at me, I look at him, and I'm like, um, the photographer.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: And you hear, you know, I mean, just we're like, what do what do we what do we do?
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: What do we do?
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_00: Dave looks at me and he goes, maybe we'll give him 10 more seconds and we'll walk away.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: And then out the boat.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: Oh bro, 10 seconds is a lot.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: I don't walk out.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_00: I was like he looks at me, and next thing you know, you hear uh the door open, and it's the ant, I guess.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: And she's very calm and she's sweet as can be.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: She's like, Hello, gentlemen.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Thank you for coming tonight.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: We have a little instance happening right now, but we're gonna come back to you in a couple of minutes and we'll be ready for you to enter the house.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: She closed the door.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: Delegate Dave.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, what?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Like, what does that mean?
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm going, let's back away from the door in case there's any guns inside.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_00: Like, really?
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: Come on, man.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: Dude, when they let us in, it was like nothing happened.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: Like everybody was, hello, so glad you're here.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, just sweeping out of the room.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_02: Ain't nobody else can get into a screaming match and break something and then go immediately from that to be like, hey, what's up?
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_02: How you doing?
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_02: That's a psychopath.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Y'all, that should be shit.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_02: Dude, that I'd have been gone.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: I don't care about the pay.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_02: My life, I'd have been gone.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: Dude, I can top it.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_00: I can top.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: There's another one.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_00: I'm going to this wedding by myself, daytime wedding.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, never met the bride and groom.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: I was working for another photographer at the time.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: Um, film days again.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_00: And I go to the house and I'm seeing a lot of cop cars.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh, well, I guess the groom or somebody's, you know, JP, somebody's Jefferson Parish Police Department over here.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_00: And um, I walk in there and everybody's kind of got that look in their face of like a little worried, like kind of looking around, like, okay.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, hey, I'm just little, this little white kid, you know, with a camera.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_00: Hey, how you doing, officer?
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_00: Good to see you.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm walking around and hello, I'm looking for uh Miss uh Smith or whatever.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_00: And the sister of the bride comes over and I said, So I said, So who's uh who's the cop?
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_00: Uh groom, dad, uncle, mom, I don't know.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_00: You know, trying to be silly, trying to make it life and light and fluffy.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_00: And she's like, You don't know why they're here?
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_00: I'm like, should I know why they're here?
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: Why why do we have 15 cars here and and cops just all dressed in their in their gear?
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_00: And she goes, Well, in case she didn't know, I'm white.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: My sister's white.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_00: I said, Okay.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: She goes, the groom is not.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_00: Like, whatever.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_00: This is New Orleans, dude.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_00: Seriously?
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: And she's like, um, father of the bride is not happy about that.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: Kind of threatened his life.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_00: Therefore, we have a lot of cops here.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, oh.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_00: Um, how's how's dad doing?
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to be a jackass to lighten it up, you know?
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_00: And she was like, Well, he's had quite a few drinks, and um, he'll be okay as long as these boys stay.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh god.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what the hell, man?
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_00: So we went around, went along our business.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: Dad had that little blank look in his face the whole freaking night, and uh couldn't help but wonder, you know, did they get all the weapons off of him?
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: Is he hiding one in his stock or some shit?
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_00: Like, oh dear god, yeah.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_00: All the weird things to me, by the way, happened when I was way younger and really cheap.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_00: That's where all the weird I'm serious.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: I'm serious.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_00: Like on the upper scale.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_00: You're not wrong.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_00: No, like all the uppers scale jobs that I've been having for the last 20 years, 15 to 20 years.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_00: Um, nothing like this.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_00: Like, absolutely nothing.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: Like, I've had brides fall backwards into the birdbath, little fountain thingy, and the mom-in-law was right next to me.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: She turns to me and she goes, Tell me you got a picture of that.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Oh my god.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, ma'am, I didn't get a picture.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not taking a picture of the bride.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: She got to go.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_01: I do that school.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: She gotta go.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so anyway, all those all those kinds of scenarios um I have not had in a very, very, very, very long time.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_00: But they're exist, they do exist, they're real, they're real.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_00: Not everybody knows how to hold their liquor, you know.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: Dear Lord in heaven, dude.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_02: That's like I've had my first experience with something like that last night at the comedy show, believe it or not.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_02: You'd think by dealing with a bunch of drunk people watching comedy, I'd have dealt with a lot.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: But we were at this event.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_02: No, I we were all packed up.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_02: Uh people was leaving.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_02: Um I had my suitcase with my camera equipment in it.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: I'm talking to uh T, which is Tyler's uh girlfriend, and she's pregnant.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_02: And for everybody who don't know, I'm an ex-biker.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_02: So when it comes to women being anywhere with us, highly alert, highly protective.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_02: I also have a firearm license, so I always carry, so I'm even more active and paying attention.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_02: But all of a sudden, I hear this loud commotion coming from the audio in like uh whatever, whatever you call that, where they do all the soundboards and stuff for the show.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, this is a good thing.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_02: And I hear this yeah, I hear all this screaming.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_02: Um now me and her at the door, we're just talking about the show, and all of a sudden this dude comes rushing out, screaming, cussing, you could get it, you can get it.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_02: And I turn around because again, it's me, her, the door.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_02: So I turn around and he's like, Yeah, even you, you can have to get it.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_02: And I looked at him and I was just like, Who the f are you talking to?
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_02: Because immediately I was no longer a photographer, right?
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_02: Like the show was over, right?
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: The show, me being nice was done.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, I don't have to be nice, I can be me.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_02: I can be logically just Zach.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_02: And as soon as I was like, I was just like, Oh, oh, it's bounce time, like you gotta go.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_02: And of course, he just walked past me and turned around.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, you want some?
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_02: And I was just like, You're not gonna hang me on with word, you drunk boy.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I drink water and I'm running on like 15 milligrams of creatine, like I'm ready to run, dude.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_02: But no, he comes out, he comes out and I see him walking back, and this is my red, this is where my flag started bouncing.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_02: I pushed her away from the doorway.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_02: I it was like you just step away from like kind of move back a little bit because I didn't know what he was coming back into this venue with, but he had like a suitcase full of stuff and threw all these papers all over the floor.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_02: And we assume come to find out that this was the sound engineer's boyfriend.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_02: Oh no, and I was just like, you have horrible taste in men.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_02: Like, if there was if there was a taste of like to not have, you got it.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_02: Right, like he is not a winner, you don't have a winner.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: Oh god.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I can help you find a winner, right?
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_02: But that one's not it.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_00: That one's definitely not it.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_00: I'm like, mm-mm.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: Man.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_00: So, dude, I'm so glad we had a chance to finally do this.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: I know um, so Zach's wife is taking a nap and the baby is two, which is how the podcast happened today.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: Or are they getting are they waking up?
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_02: They're both out.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_00: They're still out?
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_00: That's fantastic.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_02: No, I'm watching my kid right now.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_02: She's got her hand over her face, and my wife won't wake up until I wake her up.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_02: So she's a heavy sleeper like I am.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: Let her sleep.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_00: She needs it.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_00: She needs it.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_00: We all need a dude.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: Whenever you're tired, you need a nap, just take the damn nap.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_00: You need it, man.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: Man.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: So is there uh is there any one piece of information you would give somebody who's starting out and feeling frustrated and throwing that verge of maybe giving up, you know, or they're having a lot of self-doubt?
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_00: It's like, was there any one thing that helped you, you know?
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, if you're like me, um I do better.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_00: If I'm successful, I feel fine.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_00: It's when you're not successful, is when I feel like, you know, I'm five feet beneath the ground, even though I know I'm not, right?
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_00: But I feel like it.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_00: What are your thoughts?
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_02: Well, I think that one of the biggest things that has helped me is um you re you're you're in the world of being an entrepreneur.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: You are no longer in the world where you can you have to look you have you can't look at yourself and be like, oh, I can't do it.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_02: Like, this is getting too hard.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_02: You're always one step away from winning.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, so if you quit, you have failed.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_02: Like for me, there it was not a failure option.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: Failing to me is quitting.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_02: It's not not getting a client, it's not not nailing a shot.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: It is me quitting, me putting my camera on Facebook Marketplace and selling it and moving on with my life.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: That is quitting.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: That is failing.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_02: So definitely you just have to grant it, for once in your life, you gotta believe in yourself.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_02: Like, that's what I kept telling myself.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: I was like, you've been a musician, you've done all these other things, and you've always failed them, you've quit.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_02: Like, for once in your life, you gotta not quit something.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_02: And that was one of the biggest things that helped me stick with it.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_02: Um big tips, other than being self-resilient, self-reliant, have a bass.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_02: Have that one person.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_02: Like it my wife definitely kept me, she definitely kept my head up.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_02: Like, there was definitely times when it was just like, I'm not even getting people to like look at my like my mom, my mother was the only one that was liking any of my Facebook posts that I would make about.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_02: Like, I was I was getting to the point where like I was not wanting to do the Facebook stuff anymore.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_02: You know, my wife, having that person that can help you through those hard times, you definitely have, but a lot of it is really just self-resilience.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: Um, you're really just looking at yourself in the mirror and being like, okay, I might not be getting the clients, I might not be getting all the views that I want on my page on my posts.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_02: What can I do differently?
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_02: What can I do to make this change?
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: You know, can I advertise differently when I post my photos instead of posting them early in the morning at four o'clock?
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_02: Maybe I wait until 10.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_02: You know, doing different, it's it's a game.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_02: You're no, you're you're not a photographer, you're an entrepreneur.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_02: Like I know that we classify ourselves as photographers, but we are entrepreneurs.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_02: If you're trying to take this to that level, if you like it for a hobby, you probably don't care.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_02: You just like taking pictures, which is fine.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_02: I love that for you.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_02: I wish that I didn't have that want to do more mentality so that I could.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_02: But I feel like I have to do more.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_02: So definitely just keeping your head up.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_02: And for the love of God, stop hating everything that you freaking take.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: The moment you stop hating every single F photo that you take, your life is gonna get better.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_02: And that one was a hard one.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_02: The reason I'm getting annoyed by that is because I do that constantly.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_02: I hate almost every single photo I take because there's always one tiny little fragment that doesn't matter to make it hire any other person, but it will piss me off.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_02: But like I said in the beginning, I am an okay photographer.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: My photos are okay.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_02: You ask me anything about my photos back in the day, I'd tell you the trash.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't do that anymore.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_02: Because if you beat yourself down, you will fail.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: So just stop beating yourself up, be self-resilient, and have some kind of uh a support system when you do fall.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_02: Because we all fall.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_02: Have that.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_02: That's the easiest thing I can say.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, dude.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_00: And look, man, sometimes um your mom's love, I know it's the last ounce of your safety net, but you have a safety net.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_00: I'm serious.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: Like when I first when I first started, um, my parents were highly, you need to do this.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, go for it.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_00: Um, just know that you can always move back home if you need to.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_00: And I know it seems silly, but that little bit of a safety net, and I know that they're true.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's just who my parents are, they're awesome.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but I always had in the back of my head that I'm not gonna fail completely because I can always go home and reboot.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_00: You know, I can always reboot if needed.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, man, I tell everybody I said, look, dude, if you're only getting compliments from your friends and your family, you're getting them from the wrong people, you know?
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_00: And and pleasing yourself is very hard, which could be the the good thing, honestly, because if you're never completely satisfied with your work, you're always trying to do better.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_00: And if you're hanging around if you hang around other photographers that are at the exact same level you are, then it's really hard for all of y'all to grow because nobody knows how to be better or motivate or or give the kind of advice that you may need.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: You know, like the flash thing.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: I had to I had to take seminars, I had to go.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_00: I had I needed somebody to show me hands-on how to make this work.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_00: You can't just tell me about it.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_00: I gotta see it, you know, because once I see it and it makes sense to me, it's burned.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_00: It's burned in my brain, it's a core memory, it's not gonna go away.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: And I love teaching, I love, love, love, love, love teaching off-camera flash.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_00: Um, it's basically taking the theory of the studio, which you do in the studio, but you're bringing it outside and you're dealing with fill light, you're dealing with sunlight, you're dealing with things that make you think, you know?
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_00: And man, the day you can have that one flash, not even on a stand, hold it.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_00: Just handhold it yourself, you know?
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_00: And um it'll it'll change your freaking life, dude, when it makes sense to you.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_00: Because then you feel like you can really honestly do what you want to do.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: Now it's like, oh, I have this idea.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_00: Like I had an idea one time and it was this wall we were by, we were by the pool, and I'm like, you know what?
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_00: I have a uh an amber gel that I can put on my flash, and I know that when I use it, I can change the white balance and then change the actual colors of the wall and the pool just because of the white balance.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_00: Wow, let's just try it.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that one little shot I did, that girl still talks about that damn shot, and that was 15, 20 years ago for her senior pictures.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_00: And it was just because I was being creative, you know.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: So keep doing what you're doing.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_00: The two hundredth of a second issue won't really be an issue because usually when people are trying to do high speed sync, it's because they're they're trying to shoot really fast.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_00: Um because they want to they want to shoot their F stop as wide open as they can, because they everybody just wants to blur everything in the background for whatever reason.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_00: Um which is why which is why high speed sync needs to work faster.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_00: But do the other things first.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_00: You know, start with your ISO at 100 outside, take your quick pop, make sure the ambient light that you're working under expose via correctly first, then put your camera on full manual, take your flash, expose it a stop to two stops brighter than those settings.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_00: So that so your flash is overexposed.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_00: Now remember this F stop adjust the stop to your flashlight your shutter speed, adjust to your ambient.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_00: So basically don't mess with uh don't mess with the shutter after you figure that part out.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_00: Keep keep it at 200 because you can't you can't go more than that, obviously.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_00: And take your F-stop, and if it's F if it's at 5'6, but your flash is really bright, then you go down to F11 and now skin tones look great with that flash, and you're looking at the rest of the scene and you're like how how do I do that?
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_00: It's like now I'm exposing for the flask which is brighter, which takes the overall scene and makes it darker.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_00: You basically just did Photoshop in your camera.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_00: In that cool.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_02: That makes a lot more sense.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_00: In that cool, so shutter open and close is for ambient, which is your motion, but it's also your ambient light.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: The F-stop is what you go upper or bigger according to the amount of power your flash is putting out.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_00: You know, now obviously you adjusting your aperture is also gonna mess with the sunlight.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: But but my my point was figure out what the exposure is with the sunlight first, then put the flash either closer to your subject, turn it brighter, whatever it is, because you don't only think you want to change is take your f-stop and go smaller.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_00: So you're not allowing more sunlight in, you're allowing less sunlight in, but the flash is brighter, so you're exposing for the flash.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_00: Isn't that cool?
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_00: That is cool.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_00: That makes a lot more sense.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you, take your kid outside, hand hold that flash, or put it on a little stand, whatever you feel like doing, but just mess with it, and you're gonna start it's gonna start clicking.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: And when it clicks, it's gonna be like, okay, hold on.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_00: If I can do one, I can do two lights.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_00: This is neat.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_00: And the sun just becomes the sunlight, just becomes the fill light that's now your slave, like your bitch slave, do as I say, instead of oh, it's the king, it's the sunlight king, and I don't know how to work with the sunlight king.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_00: I'm not worthy.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_00: No, man.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: That thing is the slave for you, it's your fill light.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: Just remember that it's not your main, it's your fill light, and that'll change your life.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, dude.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad we had that.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad we had a chance to do this.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: And uh I had sure.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_00: And look, I have your cell number, so I'm gonna take my gear, I'm gonna I'm gonna go outside, and I'm gonna do um before and after shots.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna text you with the settings, and then you can just copy the exact same thing.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_02: I bet that works.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah, man.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, I do want to say one thing.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_02: Last thing ever.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_02: Um, towards like the new photographer coming up.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it is a pla a pay to play.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_02: Sometimes when you are stuck, if you can't find a mentor in your city that is interested in helping another photographer, like I found Kaylee's Canvas.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, she's taking me out under one of her sessions and help me out.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_02: Sometimes you do have to pay if you want to learn from people.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_02: Not everybody.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_02: Like, not everybody, but if you want it local, sometimes they will ask you to pay.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_02: Especially if they book a session and you're gonna be taking photos, they're gonna want you to pay them.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_02: So I did that, and honestly, I learned a lot just by being with another photographer and seeing how they do their job.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_02: That's the only other thing.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_02: Get a mentor.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_02: Regardless, that's the big that's the big thing there.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_02: Just get a mentor.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_02: Sometimes to grow in business, you have to have a mentor.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_00: Oh god, yes.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_00: Oh dear lord in heaven.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_00: I I would not have gotten as far as quick as I did, I think 10 years.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_00: I think your first 10 years is pretty quick.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, it seems like a long time, but you blink and you're like, oh wow, now we're 111, and then 12, then 13.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: And then you look at your first 10 and you're like, well, what'd I really accomplish in my first 10?
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_00: You know, like did I get to where I wanted to get to in my 10 and now the rest is my career?
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_00: Or am I not there yet?
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_00: You know, and that's always been like my thing.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_00: You you need to be around other people.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_00: That's just only because everybody humans are humans are way better students when they have somebody who's a really good teacher.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_00: And hands-on, meaning in front of you, you know, like even when I did seminars and uh we did Light Pro or After Dark or you know, whatever it was, which is a three-day seminar.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_00: I loved being one of the teachers, one of the mentors, because the the people that were there that I knew were struggling, I was able to grab them and pull them aside and say, Come with me.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: Like, what?
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_00: I'm going, I know this isn't the class that you're in, but I know where you are right now on the break.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_00: Come with me.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_00: And then she was like, Can I bring a friend?
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Bring five, bring ten, I don't care.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_00: And next thing you know, we have 15 people behind me, and what I just taught you here, we did in person.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_00: And they were able to ask her questions, like, hold on, I'm still lost.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_00: I'm like, not a problem.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_00: Let's do it again.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_00: Let's do it from zero.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_00: You have to do it to where it makes sense to you, or you're not gonna leave here knowing how to do it when you get home.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm like, this isn't a trick, this isn't fancy, this is just knowledge, this is just straight up science, you know.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_00: So let's go ahead and do this.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_00: So hell yeah, man.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_00: If you can be around somebody, I don't want to put I don't want to record a class, you know.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_00: It sounds great.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_00: Record a class, sell it to thousands, uh thousands of people and make your your money.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_00: I don't want to do the class.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_00: You know what I want to do again?
- 1:28:19SPEAKER_00: I want to pick a day, I want to pick a weekend and offer an a seminar weekend like what I just said, like what we used to do back in the day.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_00: You know, and if five, if five people would sign up, it'd be worth me doing it.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_00: And then you and people get to come here, come to New Orleans, and I get to show off and show you how to do some food photography, some portrait photography, and then uh some business, you know.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_00: I've I've been saying this for a couple of years now, but yeah, you're right.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_00: With life, it gets hard, it gets difficult, you you you blink, it's over, you know, the year is over.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: It's just so hard.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: But maybe the year's almost over.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of like, okay, what if I did something for like next summer and just talked about it and see which five or six want to come for next summer?
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe if it's because it's on it's able to go on the calendar a little bit further in advance, it'd probably happen a lot easier than in two weeks we're gonna do a hangout.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_00: Like that, that doesn't work.
- 1:29:22unknown: Right.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_00: Oh man.

- 1:29:26SPEAKER_00: We're gonna do this again.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_00: I love watching you grow.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_00: I I can definitely see it in your work, I can hear it in your attitude.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_00: And for me, I think it's important for other people to hear these stories from people that are like them in the same boat, in the same thought process, or else it's really hard to you know, it's like your parents talking down to you all the time.
- 1:29:51SPEAKER_00: You you blank them out, but when it's a buddy of yours that's going through the exact same thing, but they haven't answered, you listen to them a little bit easier than somebody who just thinks that they know it all, you know.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_00: So um, I'm glad you're here, brother man.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_00: I hope your wife got a good sleep in.
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_00: I know uh you probably take a nap too, huh?

- 1:30:11SPEAKER_02: She just she actually just walked in a minute ago and she's she was like she kind of mouthed the words that you want to call her, but yeah, she just gave me a thumbs up and turned back around.
- 1:30:21SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
