Transcript
- 0:01Hi ladies and gentlemen, this is episode 3 of the Take Two pod
- 0:04with Mom and Dad. I'm dad.
- 0:07And I'm mom. And today, we're gonna be doing
- 0:10a podcast on one of our favorite action movies.
- 0:15Do you want to do the drum roll, Mom?
- 0:21Speed 1994, directed by Jan de Bont.
- 0:27Jon Debont. Diamond and starring Keanu
- 0:29Reeves, Dennis Hopper and Sandra Bullock.
- 0:33Yep, the kids were just put down for the evening.
- 0:38Been a busy day at home. No naps for either one of them.
- 0:43Pretty hectic. They get a little.
- 0:44Crap, she's a baby. Yes, she left.
- 0:46Yeah, but not as much. She missed her last nap, right?
- 0:49She did, yeah. It was very chaotic.
- 0:51I was so overstimulated at one point that I just looked at you
- 0:54and I said nobody talked to me for 20 minutes.
- 0:57Yeah, it was, it was a rough 1. So weather is shite outside, so
- 1:03it's tricky. You can't really take the kids
- 1:05out. But anyway.
- 1:07It's unsafe to take a baby out it feels like -30 one.
- 1:11That's how cold it is. So we're going to do speed
- 1:14today, um, 1994 starring Keanu Reeves, right?
- 1:19Who else is in there? Send Sandy.
- 1:20Bee I already, I already said that.
- 1:22Sandy B. Yeah, I said Reeves, Dennis
- 1:25Hopper and Sandra Bullock. And he beat my crush.
- 1:27Your crush. OK, the synopsis for speed.
- 1:31An extortionist bomber rigs a Los Angeles city bus to explode
- 1:36if its speed drops below 50 mph. For the metric system people,
- 1:41that's 80 kilometers an hour, forcing a young cop and a female
- 1:45passenger to keep it moving and save everyone on board.
- 1:49That was going 80 kilometers an hour that whole time, OK, when
- 1:53they said 50, I didn't make the connection in my mind.
- 1:56Right, because metric system. So I thought it was 50
- 1:58kilometers an hour. So I'm like, OK, yeah, that's
- 2:00like a leisurely speed. 80 is crazy.
- 2:03Is crazy. Are you ready for the movie of
- 2:06the year? OK, It stars Keanu Reeves, Sandy
- 2:11Bee. This movie came out in 1994.
- 2:15As we've said already, the box office was crazy.
- 2:20It did $350 million worldwide on a budget of 30 million.
- 2:26Yeah, adjusted for inflation, that's about $800 million
- 2:29worldwide. Oht my.
- 2:30God, which is basically a blockbuster.
- 2:33Yeah. When was the first time you
- 2:35watched this? You showed it to me the first
- 2:38time I watched it. Really.
- 2:41Yeah, you. It was when we were dating.
- 2:43Early, early when we were dating, um, and you have it on
- 2:47Blu-ray. So you said that you wanted me
- 2:49to see it and you asked if I'd ever seen it before, and I said
- 2:51I don't think so. My mom loves to tell the story
- 2:56of taking me to the drive in when I was like two or three for
- 3:00Speed 2 cruise control. Oh my God.
- 3:03And I loved it so much that when we were leaving the drive and I
- 3:06started crying like I had a full out tantrum because I loved it
- 3:09so. Cried for Speed 2 cruise
- 3:10control. OK, you're failing to notice.
- 3:14I was like two or three at the time.
- 3:15I was very young, but I loved it so much and I was so bummed we
- 3:19had to leave the drive in. And it's such a shame that Drive
- 3:22and start to think anymore because it's really such a great
- 3:26way to see a movie. There's still a thing, it's just
- 3:29it's not as much as a thing. In the city Common, yeah.
- 3:32It's a small town thing now, yeah.
- 3:34What did you think of it the first time you watched?
- 3:37Again, Dad remembers the first time he sees movies.
- 3:40I don't really remember. I I know that I liked it the
- 3:44first time I saw it, but I don't, I don't know.
- 3:48I like, I don't think I loved it.
- 3:49I still don't love it. It's not one of my favorite
- 3:52movies. Dare.
- 3:53Good. Well, I remember the first time
- 3:56I watched it. This was on cable TV and we had
- 4:02recorded it on VCR and VHS and I watched this all the time and it
- 4:08was the TV version so they had bleeped out a bunch of the
- 4:11swearing. So some of the scenes like it
- 4:14had that Kung Fu movie dubbing and it looked really weird and I
- 4:18never understood why because I was like 6 years old when I
- 4:22first saw it. But this movie, Oh my God, I had
- 4:26the biggest crush on Sandra Bullock when this movie came
- 4:30out. She's selling.
- 4:32It Oh my God, like as a six and then I turned 7.
- 4:36I had a huge crush on her and Keanu Reeves.
- 4:39This guy was my hero in this movie.
- 4:42So if you don't believe me when I was for my 7th birthday,
- 4:48there's a video there's there's footage of this.
- 4:51I'm wearing a white T-shirt and beige khakis, just like piano at
- 4:57the end of the movie, and my T-shirts tucked in.
- 5:00And I also had a little plastic toy.
- 5:03It was a blue water gun. It was a little 9mm and I used
- 5:06to pretend I was. I was Jack because he was.
- 5:10He's super cool in the movie. So just a little tidbit there.
- 5:16So you don't like it that much? It's not that I don't like it
- 5:19that much. I do like it.
- 5:20I just said I don't love it. There are a lot of movies that
- 5:23have a special place in my heart.
- 5:25This one, you know, it's a popcorn movie.
- 5:27It's fun, but it's I don't adore it.
- 5:30I mean, this movie is it's one of the best action movies ever.
- 5:34And we just finished watching it actually.
- 5:36So it's fresh in our heads. And there was multiple scenes
- 5:39where I looked over at you and you were just like, gripping
- 5:41onto the pillow. Yeah, it's it's a nail biter.
- 5:44Yeah, it's definitely on the edge of your seat thriller.
- 5:47So I love this movie. I have it on Blu-ray.
- 5:51It is bunch of movies try to be this movie after the fact and
- 5:57they get close. But there's something about this
- 5:59movie that everything about it works, I think.
- 6:02But we'll get into that later. But I can get into it now.
- 6:06It's I love this movie because all the characters are they seem
- 6:11like real people. Jack played by Keanu Reeves,
- 6:15Harry played by Jeff Daniels, his partner, just very like they
- 6:19all seem the guy from Terminator, Miles Dyson.
- 6:22I only know him as Miles Dyson. He plays the captain or the
- 6:25Lieutenant of the LAPD. He looks and seems like a cop
- 6:29would. And the people on the bus, the
- 6:33people on the bus. One thing I love about this
- 6:36movie, nobody ever. There's no characters that take
- 6:38over the movie. There's no character that's
- 6:41super stands out. Everybody's got a little quirk
- 6:44here. There a couple of lines, but
- 6:46there's no like very obvious OHT, here's the, you know, the
- 6:49teenager, here's the loudmouth, here's the the rich person.
- 6:54I mean, it's public transportation in LA, so you're
- 6:56not going to find a lot of rich people there.
- 6:58But everybody has a little line here and there, but they do not
- 7:03overpower the movie, which I think is really, really clever.
- 7:08A lot of movies do that and they focus in too much on these
- 7:12background characters and it kind of takes you away.
- 7:15This movie, it's a friggin roller coaster ride, but I love
- 7:20it and it's by a Sandy Sandy B Crush all the way all the way.
- 7:25I'm still have a crush that sounds.
- 7:26Like yeah, always. So we can go to segments.
- 7:32What? What's your cringiest moment in
- 7:34the movie? So I have a couple, um, every
- 7:39time the bomber speaks is cringy.
- 7:42He wants to be like a 1930s bad guy twirling his mustache.
- 7:48Every time he, he, he talks, um, the whim of a madman.
- 7:53I like that. Ha ha ha, ha.
- 7:55He calls Jack a pump. A punk couldn't interest you in
- 8:00a bribe there, could I? Like, you can just picture him
- 8:03twirling his mustache. And then when he opens his money
- 8:06bag and the ink packs explode, he goes, my money, my money.
- 8:13It's it's very cartoonish. So you're saying Dennis Hopper
- 8:18is the villain is cringey. He's very cringy.
- 8:22Most of his lines are incredibly.
- 8:24Cringy couldn't disagree any anymore.
- 8:26I I think I have a whole segment about it, but well.
- 8:29We'll get into your segmentation, but that's that's
- 8:31my one. Just he has a lot of very cringy
- 8:35lines. The other one is, and I'm sorry,
- 8:37you're not gonna like this Keanu Reeves, AKA Jack and his
- 8:41monotone acting. He plays the same character in
- 8:46every movie he is in. Yeah, and also in the elevator
- 8:50scene, yeah, there's like 7 people whose lives are hanging
- 8:54in the balance and he's just smacking his gum so offensively
- 9:00he's like, how much time we got? Yeah, he's playing it cool.
- 9:05No. Take my hand.
- 9:07Take my hand. Come on.
- 9:09Come on, lady. Come on.
- 9:11That's really. Good.
- 9:12You like it. Take my.
- 9:13Hand. But he just.
- 9:14He comes off as cocky in that scene and unlikable.
- 9:16He becomes much more likeable later in the movie.
- 9:19Yeah, but I don't like him in that scene.
- 9:21I don't like the guns backing. And the interesting thing is,
- 9:25Keanu Reeves is such a nice guy in real life.
- 9:28He's not cocky at all. He's known to be very humble.
- 9:31Yeah, very down to earth. He's literally, literally being
- 9:34called the nicest man in Hollywood.
- 9:37He is a. Canadian, he is a good guy.
- 9:39He's a Canadian. He's Canadian, yeah, but he
- 9:40lives in the US. Yes, he drives a Harley now.
- 9:43He's fully Americanized. We are proud to have him as a
- 9:45Canadian because he is known to be one of the nicest people in
- 9:48Hollywood. He's nice to cast and crew
- 9:50members. He's kind and respectful to
- 9:52fans. He's known to donate huge
- 9:54amounts of the money he makes to charity.
- 9:57He has a sister in a wheelchair who he adores.
- 10:00He is such a great guy, but he's not a great actor.
- 10:05I disagree, but anyway um, so that's the the villain and the
- 10:11main character are cringy, that's what you're saying?
- 10:14He's not, he's not cringy per se, I just find his acting it's
- 10:18not very believable and it's a bit monotone.
- 10:20OK, OK, alright, wow, we're getting off to a good start
- 10:24here. Just ripping into the two main
- 10:26people of the movie. OK, cringiest moment.
- 10:29So for me, I had a really tough time finding a cringy moment
- 10:35because everything about it, like all the little cringy
- 10:38moments, they fit very well into the movie.
- 10:42This for the 90s. This is the difference between
- 10:45liking a movie and loving a movie.
- 10:47No, I don't see the cringe you. Can't.
- 10:48No, I saw the cringe, but it doesn't.
- 10:50There's nothing. If I took it out, I'll be like
- 10:53the charm is gone. You know the the, the tourist
- 10:56guy on the bus. He I could have said he was
- 10:58cringy. He was, but he was supposed to
- 11:00be you. Well, there was no one thing I
- 11:05noticed about the bus. I mean, it's the 90.
- 11:06It's 94. There's a lot of race relations
- 11:09stuff happening in Los Angeles at the time, but there was like
- 11:12a bunch of different races on this bus and they didn't really,
- 11:17you know, I guess they did kind of like isolate one of them with
- 11:22the Hispanic guy. Get away from me.
- 11:26Yeah, I thought that was a little.
- 11:27I'm not here for you, man. I'm not here for you, man.
- 11:30Let's not do this. So.
- 11:34You know, where was I going with this?
- 11:37Yeah, like a lot of things could have been cringy, but it was
- 11:40just, I think it was super subtle.
- 11:42Some of the some of the lovey dovey moments between Sandy B
- 11:46and Keanu were a little bit cringy.
- 11:48Yeah, making out in that subway car after they both almost.
- 11:51Died after a day like that. They were making all kinds of.
- 11:55Comments after a day like get into that later.
- 11:56You would not be horny. You would be.
- 11:58Just don't know what we'll see. We'll get into that later.
- 12:01But so I don't really have a cringy moment.
- 12:04So there's a bunch of them. It's the 90s.
- 12:08You know, you could have said the guy with the Jaguar when
- 12:11he's like, he's switching seats and Jack's trying to jump on the
- 12:15bus and he's like, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.
- 12:19You know, because he's trying to get into the driver's seat.
- 12:22I mean, it's funny. It's supposed to be, there's
- 12:24supposed to be a little bit of charm, but I'll get into Keanu's
- 12:28acting later cause I gotta defend my guy because right off
- 12:31the bat you're coming for him. So most iconic moment or quote?
- 12:37I'll go first this time. Alright, so most iconic moment
- 12:41for me, Jack going under the bus on that little trolley to disarm
- 12:47the bomb. Super tense moment.
- 12:50Yeah. Totally out of the blue because
- 12:52that's the last thing that you think he would have done because
- 12:55he gets off the bus and they're talking and they're trying to
- 12:58figure it out. And they just cut to him in like
- 13:01a bulletproof vest with. And then there's this little
- 13:05this little go Kart thing with wheels and he climbs onto it and
- 13:08you're like, yo, is this guy for real?
- 13:10Like when has that been done in a movie before?
- 13:13It's also hot how much he trusts Annie.
- 13:16That's what I'm saying. Sandra Bullock, like he makes
- 13:19eye contact with her when he's got that.
- 13:21Sexy don't fuck up, bitch. I'm.
- 13:23The guy real quick, it's hot how much he trusts her.
- 13:25Well, she you saw how she was driving.
- 13:28Yeah. She's a freaking ultimate
- 13:31badass. It's a redemption for lady
- 13:32drivers. That whole movie.
- 13:35She's. So listen, a woman said that.
- 13:37I didn't say that. OK?
- 13:38That's all I'm saying. So another epic moment that had
- 13:43to bring up Jack jumping out of his Bronco, running towards the
- 13:47bus when he gets on the freeway and these slams the door and
- 13:52he's running on the side. He breaks the glass, He's like
- 13:54open your door and the bus driver is like, what the Hell's
- 13:57going on? That whole sequence.
- 14:00I don't know what it is. Maybe the camera angles or just
- 14:02the way like everything smooth. The way he jumps out of the car
- 14:06and he's gunning it for the bus is like super awesome.
- 14:10Like it's so cool. He's the coolest guy in this
- 14:12movie. I don't know, like every guy.
- 14:14You have a crush on No, no, forget.
- 14:16Every guy listen, any guy who sees this movie wants to be
- 14:20Keanu in this. He does everything cool.
- 14:22He's cool at the elevators, he's cool to get on the bus.
- 14:26He freaking jumps out of a Jaguar to get on to the bus.
- 14:29Like he's the ultimate cool guy in this movie.
- 14:32Anyways, just saying, um, so for quotes, actually you do moments
- 14:40and then we'll go to quotes. Well, I don't have moments, I
- 14:42only put quotes. You don't have an iconic woman.
- 14:45I didn't put an iconic moment because there was like a couple
- 14:48of really good one liners that I just liked a lot.
- 14:50OK, And I felt felt those were more I like those better than
- 14:54any of the moments. So OK, I will.
- 14:58I'm jumping the gun a little bit.
- 14:59Harry is my absolute favorite character in this SO.
- 15:01You're skipping guy you. Skip, I know, but I just ate two
- 15:04of my quotes are. His OK.
- 15:06So one of my quotes is Jack looks under the bus and he's
- 15:11looking at the bomb and he has the Ferris Bueller.
- 15:15Cameron from Ferris Bueller is on the bus.
- 15:17He's talking to Harry on his phone and he's repeating
- 15:23everything that Keanu saying onto the phone.
- 15:25And Keanu goes fuck me. And the guy just like gets all
- 15:29dirty eyes and goes O darn. Yeah, because he's a little,
- 15:34he's a little vanilla guy, right?
- 15:35He's and he's scared. It's sweet.
- 15:37It's like a sweet and he's scared, he's terrified.
- 15:39He's and he's scared. Yeah.
- 15:40So you know, so I really liked that.
- 15:42I thought that was cute. And then my 2 hairy quotes are
- 15:45the first one is in the elevator scene.
- 15:48They're risking their lives and they goes 30 years of this and
- 15:52you get a tiny pension and a cheap gold watch.
- 15:55Yeah, 30 more years of this. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:57And. Your line, it's a good line.
- 15:59It comes up later and I really like it.
- 16:02And then also when they finally find out who the bomber is in
- 16:07the office, Harry just goes, that's our scumbag.
- 16:10That's our scumbag. We got him.
- 16:13It's such a good moment. So those those are a few of my
- 16:16favorite quotes from the movie. Those are good, good picks.
- 16:19So for me, I got Pop Quiz Hotshot that happens a bunch of
- 16:25times in the movie. Yeah, no, it's awesome.
- 16:31When Miles Dyson tells him don't get dead, that's that.
- 16:35That happens a couple of times. Don't get dead.
- 16:37I like that. And how many lives you got?
- 16:41Yeah, he's like, he says, remember crazy, not stupid,
- 16:46right? Then they're describing the
- 16:47bomber, which is very accurate. The guy is nuts, but he's not
- 16:50dumb. Yeah.
- 16:53And then Howard Payne, we've got all the balls in the world right
- 16:56here, man. When he's holding Harry with the
- 16:58bomb to his chest and Keanu was like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
- 17:02fucking shoot you. And he's like, he's like, put
- 17:04her down now. He's like, we got all the balls
- 17:08in the world right here, man. Like who says that?
- 17:12And then what? Interactive TV Jack Where the
- 17:15future ha ha ha. I told you he's he's a 1913
- 17:20awesome twisting his Muslim awesome.
- 17:23You put white paint on his face, he's the joker.
- 17:26He literally is the. Joke, I know.
- 17:27You're just naming all the bombers.
- 17:29Quotes No, he's lit OK and then. It was just cons.
- 17:33It was only cons. It was just cons.
- 17:36There was no baby. It was only cans.
- 17:39That fucking that one kills me every time.
- 17:41Use your key. So it was only Cam take my hand.
- 17:47Come on, lady, come on. OK, so classic cancelled.
- 17:55Is this a classic or is it gonna be cancelled in 2026?
- 17:58I, I say classic, like you said, nothing about race or gender or
- 18:03anything comes up. It's very, it's very safe.
- 18:07It's not even really that dated. No.
- 18:11In terms of how people are interacting.
- 18:13The only thing is cell phones would probably affect this movie
- 18:18because he would have got the pay phone call and then maybe
- 18:21call his police captain and said there's a bomb on this bus, you
- 18:26need to like stop it, pull it. Someone would be live tick
- 18:29talking the whole thing. Oh yeah, there would have been
- 18:31people on the bus live streaming the whole thing.
- 18:34Yeah. And that's what I hate about
- 18:36today's world. It kind of just like those
- 18:38people on the bus would have all been like video calling their
- 18:42families, which is sweet and all, but it takes away from
- 18:46what's happening in the movie. It's more pure than they
- 18:48couldn't. Yeah, more pure that they're all
- 18:50just on the bus. Those people are terrified.
- 18:52They're never knowing if they're going to see their families
- 18:54again, which is very scary. But yeah, cell phones probably
- 18:58would have ruined it. But yeah, you're right, it's not
- 19:00that dated. Yeah, it's not.
- 19:03For me, you know, after they the scene, I don't think it would
- 19:09get cancelled, but there's a couple of moments where I was
- 19:11like, you're you're on, you're on the job here, Keanu, like
- 19:16what are you doing? They did that hard right turn
- 19:19with the buzz and Keanu immediately starts spitting
- 19:23game. You know, like he's like, if we
- 19:26get out of this, I'm getting me some of that.
- 19:28And then you're like, oh, you know, like that's an come on
- 19:31guy. Like there's a bomb on this bus.
- 19:33Like have some be professional. And then she starts hitting
- 19:36back. She starts hitting on him and
- 19:38then she's like, you know, um, I'm not going to be available to
- 19:42drive the bus tomorrow, you know, like.
- 19:45It's mild, though. I mean, you're bringing some
- 19:47levity. Yeah, Yeah.
- 19:49But be intense intently. There's a few jokes.
- 19:51No, no, I think it's great. But you know how society is so
- 19:55well, it's an appropriate. You're supposed to be there's a
- 19:57bomb on this bus. I like it, don't get me wrong.
- 20:00I think some people are just, you know.
- 20:03Yeah. I hear you.
- 20:06Can you watch this with your parents?
- 20:08Yeah, it's safe. Yeah, I say F Yeah, it's a
- 20:13wicked action. You might get a little
- 20:15uncomfortable with that passionate kissing.
- 20:17You know what I love about this movie though?
- 20:20Any language. You don't need to speak English.
- 20:23You don't even need to like. Helps, no?
- 20:26But you tell you tell someone in the language that they speak,
- 20:30you say translate to bomb on bus 50 miles an hour can't get off,
- 20:35it will explode. Amen.
- 20:38They're watching. It doesn't matter what language
- 20:40because you could watch it on mute or even no dialogue.
- 20:44You have everything else, the sound effects, but minimal
- 20:47dialogue. You're good to go.
- 20:50That's hard to do in a movie. I mean, I, I don't necessarily
- 20:53agree with that, but, well, it's it's your argument that's fine.
- 20:57No, I'm just saying any language, like somebody in Japan
- 21:02turned this on and someone just said that if they only had the
- 21:06synopsis in Japanese, they could enjoy the movie.
- 21:11I guess. You're really you're really
- 21:14against this movie? I'm not against.
- 21:16It on, bring it on, bring it on. Beach.
- 21:17I think you need the dialogue. OK, favorite and least favorite
- 21:22supporting character? Go ahead.
- 21:25My favorite easy Jeff Daniels, AKA Harry.
- 21:29He gives dad vibes and best friend vibes simultaneously.
- 21:33He feels like a comforting person that you can rely on.
- 21:37So he's the perfect guy to be your partner as a cop.
- 21:40But I do have to say something that's kind of, it's kind of
- 21:44ridiculous. I, my whole life have confused
- 21:49Jeff Daniels with David Coulier. Who?
- 21:56Uncle, Uncle, Uncle Joey from Full House.
- 21:59David Coulier, look him up right now.
- 22:02They look so similar to the to the point where I thought David
- 22:05Coulier was in Dumb and Dumber. For years I thought that was
- 22:09David Coulier. It's not.
- 22:11Yeah, they do look the same and. They look the same they're and I
- 22:14I looked him up there, they're within like 4 years of each
- 22:16other. In whatever, yeah, I don't like
- 22:18I get full house. Wow, that's a flashback.
- 22:21Yeah, he's basically like him. And I found out, David.
- 22:25How old is he now? He's like 66 and Jeff Daniels is
- 22:2970. Jeff Daniels, he's not really
- 22:32just a comedic actor. This guy is just like he does.
- 22:35Everything he has him in The Martian is incredible.
- 22:38Yeah, so. And in that show, we watched
- 22:41what was it called Looming Tower?
- 22:42Looming Tower, The miniseries, Yeah.
- 22:44He has chops. Oh yeah, As Randy Jackson would
- 22:48say, he could blow. OK, we're we're under quoting
- 22:53Randy Jackson. Though that's they would say
- 22:55that about singers. Sure, I'm just being silly.
- 22:57OK, yeah, that was a tough call for me.
- 23:00I wrote Harry down 1st and then I removed them.
- 23:03How dare. I know it was hard.
- 23:05I'm gonna go out on a limb here now, um, favorite supporting
- 23:10character is going to be Dennis Hopper, the bomber.
- 23:13He's not a supporter. Let me just main character.
- 23:16Let me just let me you always do.
- 23:19This guy's character is probably the top 15 villains of all time.
- 23:24OK, he he blows up a little old lady.
- 23:27He's a menace in this movie. He laughs at everything bad that
- 23:31happens, like everything happens in his favor.
- 23:34He laughs at them maniacally. OK, he makes jokes about Sandy's
- 23:38body parts just blowing and smithereens and they're like,
- 23:41oh, they can't even count body parts.
- 23:43He's also mocking her with. The I know it's crazy and Dennis
- 23:49Hopper has played villains in a lot of movies.
- 23:51He was in Waterworld was bad, but he was in True Romance.
- 23:57He was, he played King Koopa. He played Bowser in the Super
- 24:00Mario Bros movie. Yeah, he was the villain.
- 24:04So this guy is a track record for playing villains.
- 24:07RIP, by the way. But he is, as soon as he dies in
- 24:11this movie, The movie, just like there's this release of
- 24:16relaxation because this guy is on the whole time and he is
- 24:21super smart and villainous. He's always one step ahead and I
- 24:25think he's frigging the movie is shit without him.
- 24:28If they cast somebody else as the villain, it would have been
- 24:33just another action movie. But he's perfect.
- 24:35The guy's terrifying way of the future, ha ha ha ha.
- 24:40You know, but like I said. The whim of a mad man I like.
- 24:44That man, I like that, yeah, just saying that you can see him
- 24:47spinning his, his imaginary mustache.
- 24:49But I, I think it's a little bit too much.
- 24:51But I guess it does kind of work in an action movie because
- 24:53there's a little bit of inherent cheesiness in 90s action.
- 24:57Yeah, but I'll give you an example.
- 24:59Comparatively, this movie I think you've seen a couple
- 25:02times, but Die Hard, the original villain is the guy who
- 25:07plays Snape. Alan.
- 25:09Alan Rickman. Yeah, a true gem.
- 25:11Yeah, he's a great villain in that amazing.
- 25:14But he's not as scary as Dennis Hopper, because Dennis Hopper is
- 25:18fucking calculated, but he's unhinged.
- 25:20The fucking opening scene. He sticks a a screwdriver or a
- 25:24knife into this poor security guard's ear.
- 25:27Yeah, like he chill like. You got your R rating in the 1st
- 25:3110 seconds of the fucking movie. Yeah, I was going to mention
- 25:35that that scene in particular is very bloody and it kind of
- 25:38shocks you. I know, I know.
- 25:41It shows everybody. This guy means business.
- 25:44OK, you love Dennis. Let's move on to Lee's favorite.
- 25:46Characters, so go ahead at least favorite.
- 25:50Just for lack of. I just picked the Ferris
- 25:54Bueller, Cameron Lee's favorite. Yeah, I don't, I don't know what
- 25:57his name is in the movie. He's just a random tourist on
- 26:00the bus. I don't hate him, he's just
- 26:04annoying. But he's supposed to be.
- 26:06Yeah, but he you gotta like him at the end and the beginning is
- 26:09really annoying. Ohe ohe baby crying.
- 26:13No, that was one wine fake out. Umm.
- 26:20Earlier she pulled her own passy out and furiously waved it in
- 26:23the air until I went in there, took it out of her chubby little
- 26:26fist and put it back. In her eyes were closed too.
- 26:28Her eyes were closed, she was just furious with herself.
- 26:32Yeah, you gotta go. OK, should I take this?
- 26:34Off No, no, no. I'll just pause it.
- 26:36We'll be right back. Yes.
- 26:39So yeah, just for lack of anyone else, like in Jurassic Park, I
- 26:44hated the guy that I picked, the insurance lawyer.
- 26:47I don't hate anyone in this movie.
- 26:50Nobody gives me that X so I'm just picking him.
- 26:52Just your least favorite. He's just a little annoying, OK?
- 26:56I don't hate him. All right, all right.
- 27:00That's weird. Least favorite for me.
- 27:03I had a couple of tough ones but this is very niche.
- 27:07One the VHS news guy who makes the tape.
- 27:11Yeah, he seems so. Deep pissed me off bro.
- 27:14His mouth is hanging open. We're fucking trying to save
- 27:17people's lives. Fucking asshole.
- 27:19Like chill out. He's like, I want you to take
- 27:21the tape and run it so it keeps looping and he's like, all
- 27:25right, tape it, tape it. He's like it's taping, bitch,
- 27:30this is life or death. It's turbulent fucking.
- 27:33Teens really dumb too, like he seems.
- 27:36Dumb. No, he does it on the spot.
- 27:37He knows what he's doing. But bro, relax.
- 27:40This is life or death. It's not, you know, you're not
- 27:44ordering a friggin pizza and it's taking too.
- 27:47Long was that just a moment of shitty acting, though he was
- 27:49trying. To wasn't sorry, wasn't taping
- 27:52it wasn't shitty acting. I think.
- 27:55I don't know. Maybe he's trying to act like he
- 27:58was under duress, but it just came off like.
- 28:00You know what I think this guy, they're like, listen, you're an
- 28:03extra, but we might have, we might have a line for you.
- 28:07And they're like, you're gonna have to respond to Miles Dyson
- 28:12and say it's taping. But then he's like, oh, he goes
- 28:17back and he's like, I'm going to, I'm going to fucking do
- 28:19this. And he's.
- 28:21Like and he just gives it to her.
- 28:22He told himself, he didn't tell anybody.
- 28:24He's just standing in front of mirror.
- 28:25He's like, it's taping. And then he's just like, fuck
- 28:28it, I'm going for it. And then they're like, all
- 28:30right, action is like, all right, I want you to tape it.
- 28:33Tape it. It's.
- 28:34Tapering. But yeah, maybe that's just
- 28:36that's why I'm saying maybe it's a moment of shitty.
- 28:38Director No, I think the director probably said cut and
- 28:41they're like don't do that. And then he did a bunch of
- 28:44shitty takes after and they're like fuck, this is the only good
- 28:47one so. They had to keep it.
- 28:51Anyway, our cultural impact, what do you got?
- 28:55So this movie, it's very it's very prevalent in pop culture,
- 29:02but it really, I read something that said it redefined the
- 29:06action heroes because Keanu is a lot more of an every man
- 29:11compared to the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the day.
- 29:16And what's the Who's the guy that plays Rocky?
- 29:20Stallone the big joke guys? Yeah, they were.
- 29:23They were the quintessential action stars of the 80s and 90s.
- 29:26And then Keanu comes in. He's in good shape and
- 29:28everything is a good looking guy, but he's not out of
- 29:31control. Jacket.
- 29:32I think it started with Bruce Willis.
- 29:34He wasn't yoked and diehard. It may have started with Bruce.
- 29:38Well, it's interesting you keep bringing up that hard cause I
- 29:40have something but later. But yeah, it kind of redefined
- 29:44the action hero and it worked so well in this movie that they
- 29:47were able to use more kind of every man type guys.
- 29:51Although Tom Cruise was already on the scene and he's more of an
- 29:54average Joe kind of too, not a super huge jacked bodybuilder.
- 29:59But he's like the American Jackie Chan now.
- 30:04Yeah, well. This is on stance.
- 30:05And that's a whole different argument, but it did kind of, it
- 30:09redefined in that way. It launched Keanu.
- 30:12Reeves children's tears to stay young.
- 30:16At lunch, Schiano and Sandra Bullock's careers and they both
- 30:20became huge stars after this. Sandra Bullock is still one of
- 30:24the most beloved female actresses of all time and her
- 30:30hairstyle in this movie. You know who's supposed to be
- 30:33the bus driver? Is that her?
- 30:37Oh. Ellen DeGeneres.
- 30:39Oh no, that no, that would not have worked.
- 30:42For numerous amount of reasons. It was before she was.
- 30:46I'm doing finger quotes gay though.
- 30:48Probably no. No, but sure before she was out.
- 30:51But totally different movie. Yeah, totally different.
- 30:56Sandra and Keanu have really good chemistry, but it also,
- 31:00just like I was saying, it just launched their careers.
- 31:02And her hairstyle in this movie is so good.
- 31:04Like every time I see it I want to cut my hair like that.
- 31:08On top of that, the stunts are pretty epic.
- 31:10Jumping the bus over the bridge. That was in the trailer.
- 31:16The airport scene, Keanu jumping onto the bus and all the effects
- 31:21are practical. Yeah, the bus jump, they did it
- 31:24on Myth Busters. To see if it could be.
- 31:26Done. Yeah, they did it like exact
- 31:29replica and it was busted. It can't be.
- 31:32Done well, yeah, obviously the bus didn't do that, but it was
- 31:34still. No, but the myth Busters, that's
- 31:36what they do. Right.
- 31:37It was still awesome practical effects that they used to make
- 31:39it look like that's. Part of culture.
- 31:40Yeah. Yeah, it is, yeah, which was
- 31:45common. The practical effects were
- 31:46common in 90s action. But this was a great example of
- 31:49it. And again, later, we just were
- 31:52talking about this when we were watching it, the bus running
- 31:54into the plane and the huge explosion.
- 31:57It's a real explosion. Yeah, that stuff doesn't happen
- 32:00anymore. They it's all CGI now because of
- 32:02all the laws about smoke and carbon dioxide and all that
- 32:06stuff. So.
- 32:07Yeah, but we have a really good example of some really cool
- 32:10practical effects with this movie, and it shows up in pop
- 32:15culture a lot. There's even a whole South Park
- 32:17episode that has a whole chunk of it.
- 32:20It's just a speed RIP off. It's messed up.
- 32:23It's the little wheelchair kid. They rigged his wheelchair with
- 32:27the bomb. Oh my.
- 32:29God, and then Kenny goes on like, the little, little trolley
- 32:33to try to save him and dies because Kenny dies in every
- 32:35episode. Yeah.
- 32:36Yeah. So it's pretty messed up.
- 32:38Brings the bomb. Well, they were trying to make
- 32:40his wheelchair into a time machine.
- 32:43Oh my God. But like the person that made
- 32:45The Time Machine also made it that it would explode if it went
- 32:47below a certain speed. So it just they just were
- 32:50chasing Timmy the whole movie while he's riding on.
- 32:54South Park the next level man. It's pretty offensive, but I
- 32:57mean, that's how you good as it was, it was even.
- 33:00They mentioned in Simpsons too, right?
- 33:02Simpsons had, yeah, Homer, he's talking to Lenny and Carl.
- 33:05He's like describing the movie, like point for point.
- 33:09And then he's like, I think it was called the Bus that couldn't
- 33:13slow down. He forgot the name of the movie.
- 33:16Like, it's a really easy movie title to remember.
- 33:19And classic Homer. He just forgets it, right?
- 33:23Did you have any other points for cultural impact?
- 33:26Yeah. So cultural impact, I mean, if
- 33:29you want to say personal impact too.
- 33:32I wanted to be a cop for a very short amount of time after I
- 33:35watched this movie. I thought it was the coolest
- 33:37thing ever. It probably is, but like I was
- 33:41like, this guy makes being a cop super cool looking.
- 33:46Obviously it's an action movie. I've seen other action movies of
- 33:50people being cops, but I think it's the Everyman vibe that
- 33:56makes you go. I could do that.
- 33:59So there was a lot of years. Mind you, this is all before I
- 34:03was like 16 where I'm like, I wanted to be a cop.
- 34:06But anyways, that's a different. There's a lot of action movies
- 34:10where the main character is a cop or an FBI agent.
- 34:13Yeah, it's very common. Also, so many movies have tried
- 34:16to mimic this whole idea of it's kind of a bottle movie.
- 34:22It's in one location, but kind of not like nonstop, similar
- 34:25movie title, similar situation, right?
- 34:28There's a plane, the plane is going to explode.
- 34:31It's like almost the same. We don't know who the bomber is
- 34:33or whatever. That movie is great, don't get
- 34:36me wrong. But if you had to put them side
- 34:39by side, Speed takes the cake. Yeah, but they are a different
- 34:42vibe. Yeah, but they take that and go,
- 34:45OK, how do we do a different version of Speed?
- 34:51And there's a bunch I can name with tons of movies.
- 34:54But, you know, even Speed 2, the sequel, they couldn't, they
- 34:58couldn't capture that magic in a bottle again.
- 35:00Yeah, it was impossible. Like it was on a cruise ship.
- 35:04What? Cruise ships are slow bro.
- 35:07Yeah, it's really stupid. You know, anyways, so yeah,
- 35:11cultural impact, it's great. Also the director, John Debont,
- 35:17this guy had made, I think he's made like 5 movies and they're
- 35:21all bad. This is his piece to resistance.
- 35:25Well, The thing is, it's pretty formulaic speed, but it does it
- 35:30so well. This created the formula though.
- 35:33This is the. Original recipe.
- 35:35Existed. No, I disagree.
- 35:37This is the original recipe. What other movies is like this?
- 35:42Will die hard. It's kind of like it.
- 35:45Yeah, but it's not as like nail biting.
- 35:48Is. Yeah, it is when he walks on the
- 35:51glass and stuff, Yeah. Those nail biting.
- 35:54It's it's good, it's a good movie, but this is like I'm
- 35:58going to take die hard. I'm going to I'm going to put
- 36:01pre workout in it and some caffeine and just like let's go.
- 36:05And Kiana's voice. Anyway, also guess who was
- 36:10supposed to direct this movie but turned it down?
- 36:14Now Michael Bay. No.
- 36:16Not Steven Spielberg, Who? Tarantino.
- 36:19Oh Oh no, it would have been so gory.
- 36:23Supposed to do this movie, but he turned it down and now it's
- 36:26one of his favorites, he says. I wouldn't have been able to
- 36:29make it as good. He's.
- 36:30Literally said that, but if he had made it, first of all there
- 36:33would have been a lot more racial slurs.
- 36:35That's a different movie. Right.
- 36:36And it would have been a lot gorier.
- 36:38Yeah, it would have been a totally different.
- 36:39Movie. Yeah, it would have been.
- 36:41OK, soundtrack, what do you think?
- 36:46It's a typical action movie soundtrack.
- 36:48I didn't think it was anything groundbreaking.
- 36:50It definitely gets it gets your blood pumping, it gets your
- 36:53nails biting, but I didn't think it was.
- 36:56Anything writing your nails gets you to bite your nails.
- 36:59Not your nails. Your nails don't bite.
- 37:01Nail biting. OK, that's like an adjective to
- 37:05describe. So this movie soundtrack.
- 37:10Go on the highway, turn it up and I guarantee you you'll start
- 37:15to speed and probably lose your license.
- 37:17OK, if you don't believe me, try it.
- 37:20I'm telling you, get on the highway, obviously not with the
- 37:23kids in the car, but turn this volume, turn the soundtrack up.
- 37:27It is crazy. How much songs you shouldn't
- 37:30listen to in your driveway because.
- 37:32It just gets you too put it on when you're on the treadmill or
- 37:34something and you're going to be like running like Jack trying to
- 37:38get to the train and stuff like that or get to the bus It's
- 37:41wicked. I didn't notice.
- 37:43It it's iconic. They actually made a remix of
- 37:46the original theme for Cruise Control and it was like a techno
- 37:51remix and it was pretty good. But the movie vom.
- 37:57OK, who gets to spin off? So again, we're going back to
- 38:00Harry. I love him so much.
- 38:02I think they could do a whole show, like a law and order type
- 38:05detective series of a younger Harry solving crimes.
- 38:10Because I just love the character.
- 38:11I want to see more of him. And plus, throughout the movie
- 38:15we see him that he's a seasoned detective.
- 38:18He has good instincts. There could be a crisis every
- 38:21episode. He's the bomb squad like expert.
- 38:23Right. Yeah, he could.
- 38:24Yeah. It would be obviously a bomb,
- 38:26like a law and order type thing, but with bombs.
- 38:29And you know, there could be a new crisis every episode.
- 38:32He would throw a little quips in.
- 38:34I think it would. Be really good character.
- 38:36He's such a good character. He could carry a whole show.
- 38:38They could have several seasons. For spinoff, I was a tough one
- 38:43for me. I would love to see a prequel of
- 38:47the bomber as a cop before he loses his mind and starts doing
- 38:52like crazy terrorist. Shit, but then you know he's
- 38:55going to go bad, so do you really want to see him being a
- 38:57good guy knowing? Yeah, there's a lot of movies
- 38:59like that. You want to know what happened
- 39:00before, you want to know what made them tick.
- 39:03And obviously he was working. And from the story of the movie,
- 39:08he a charge goes off. He was trying to defuse a bomb
- 39:11and I guess he lost his thumb on his left hand.
- 39:16So they're like, you can't work anymore.
- 39:18So I think enforces retirement and.
- 39:22Well, they kind of noted that he was on disability cause he has,
- 39:24yeah. He had those so I think, I don't
- 39:26know what happened with his pension but they mention it like
- 39:29you give a cheap gold watch and a shitty pension.
- 39:32So he's like, I paid my dues by losing my my hand.
- 39:37Yeah. So he wants, he snaps.
- 39:39I mean valid. I mean, sure, but you know, but
- 39:45that's, that's, that's how it is.
- 39:46Like people go to war overseas, they lose their limbs, they come
- 39:50back and they get nothing. They can't even work, ever.
- 39:54Again, well, no, but the worst thing is the damage to your
- 39:57mind. No, no, no PTSD as.
- 39:59True pop and a soldier. No, I know ruins your life.
- 40:02You don't get taken care of when you get back and it's really a
- 40:04sad situation, Most of these people the.
- 40:07Only cases you do. If you can work that they'll use
- 40:12you, but if not you're you're basically just a person in a
- 40:17wheelchair. Yeah, that's.
- 40:18True. So for me, yeah, I would say
- 40:22spin-off, you could go any direction you go, Harry.
- 40:25I like that one. You could go with the bomber,
- 40:30you could even go. You could pretend the SQL
- 40:33doesn't exist and you could do you know another SQL with Sandy
- 40:39B and Keanu as a sequel doesn't have Keanu because he saw the
- 40:44script and he's like no no no this is trash and I respect him
- 40:47for not doing that movie. Yeah, but it's nice that Keanu
- 40:50and Sandy be didn't have any bad blood because they did do the
- 40:53lake house years later together. They they secretly like each
- 40:56other, like Sandy. Beach.
- 40:58Is it a secret? Well, Sandy Beach was on Ellen a
- 41:01while ago, which is kind of funny because she was supposed
- 41:03to be a bus driver, but they literally like they were talking
- 41:06about speed. And she said that had Keanu
- 41:12asked her out at those time, at that time or even later on,
- 41:16because she's kind of been in and out of marriages, she would
- 41:20have been down and everybody went nuts because they had that.
- 41:23Chemistry was real, man. They had good chemistry and also
- 41:26he's the nicest man in Hollywood, so she probably just
- 41:28saw how sweet and kind he was and and liked that about him.
- 41:31Yeah, double feature. What are you watching?
- 41:35What this? So it's funny because we
- 41:37mentioned, we've mentioned Diehard several times.
- 41:40I think Diehard goes well with this.
- 41:42They're both 90s action movies with the terrorist in it.
- 41:45I feel like they pair well together.
- 41:47One of them is a summer vibe, one of them is a winter vibe.
- 41:50They're kind of, they would go well together if you wanted to
- 41:53have like a 90s action night. That's a good call.
- 41:55I like that. Me, it was a little bit
- 41:59different. I based it on the actors.
- 42:01So I would watch The Matrix the first one because it's like
- 42:06these two movies are peak Keanu. You're in the mood for Keanu on
- 42:09the. No, I'm saying yeah, like these,
- 42:10this is peak. I mean, he did John Wick after
- 42:13John Wick is up there, but this is peak matrix one and and speed
- 42:17like this is his, you know, whatever you want to call it.
- 42:22Like this is his Michael Jordan Championships.
- 42:26So neither of us wanted Speed 2 cruise control, no.
- 42:29Absolutely not. About.
- 42:32That's terrible. Also you could watch Speed and
- 42:36then a time to kill which is peaks and B in the time to kill
- 42:41with Matthew McConaughey. I love that movie and for
- 42:44personal. Reasons well.
- 42:46With no, no, no. But she's super hot in both
- 42:50movies, so. She is.
- 42:52She's more sexy in A time to kill.
- 42:55I know, that's why you watch both of them.
- 42:59Take it or leave it. She's more girl next door in
- 43:01speed but in time to kill. She's just sex on a.
- 43:03Stick Also just a little hot take you could say that Dumb and
- 43:08Dumber is a secret sequel to this movie.
- 43:12And Harry he didn't die Also named Harry in dumb and Dumber.
- 43:17He didn't die in speed, he they blew up and he had brain damage.
- 43:21That's messed. Up and he became a little bit
- 43:24dumb. So they're like, bro, you gotta
- 43:26go. So they fired his ass and then
- 43:29it meets Jim Carrey and he just becomes buddies with them.
- 43:33And then they, you know, they he becomes, he washes like he
- 43:38grooms dogs. You love Dumb and Dumber too
- 43:40much. Nobody else wants to watch that.
- 43:43No, Dumb and Dumber is fucking amazing and both movies came out
- 43:46in the same year. 94 Yeah. This guy has range, man.
- 43:50Jeff Daniels has because when I first watched Dumb and Dumber, I
- 43:57didn't put two and two together that that's Jeff Daniels because
- 44:00I was a kid and I'm like this guy, like I actually thought he
- 44:03was dumb because Jim Carrey, I knew he was in other.
- 44:06Movies. Yeah, that's.
- 44:06How? I knew he was in other movies,
- 44:08right? He was in the mask and stuff.
- 44:09I'm like, oh, it's just Jim Carrey.
- 44:11But when I saw Jeff Daniels, I'm like, oh, this guy's actually
- 44:13dumb. He doesn't.
- 44:14Understand. I didn't understand.
- 44:16Anyways, turns out I was the dumb one because I was the kid.
- 44:20And thought so all kids are a little dumb, yeah.
- 44:22So what are? You gonna plot twist?
- 44:24OK, Leave a penny. Take a penny.
- 44:27What scene are you taking out? What scene would you put in?
- 44:30I chose to not take anything out or add anything in.
- 44:35OK like I said it is a bit formulaic but I think it vibes
- 44:38well. Maybe the ending runs a little
- 44:41bit long, like after the bus. It's kind of it's like a fake.
- 44:46Ending and yeah, it's kind of not as good after after the bus,
- 44:49but they have to have some kind of closure with yeah with the
- 44:53bomber so. I have some problems with the
- 44:54ending, we'll get into that after but.
- 44:56Yeah. So I, I, I didn't wanna take or
- 44:59or I didn't wanna take out or add anything.
- 45:01I thought that it was. It's pretty well balanced except
- 45:03for the ending could be maybe a little shorter.
- 45:05Yeah, opening credits are long as hell, so I would have
- 45:11shortened that a bit. It's just the elevator shaft and
- 45:14everybody's name in the movie and their uncle.
- 45:16But. All 90s movies like that.
- 45:18Though but silver lining, once you realize what roller coaster
- 45:22ride you're going on in this movie, it's worth the wait
- 45:26because it's like this calm before they turn everything up
- 45:31to 11. Yeah, that's gonna give you
- 45:32anxiety for two. Hours, like nonstop, you know,
- 45:35it does not stop this movie. Yeah.
- 45:37And there's a perfect example of it later.
- 45:39I never noticed that till tonight.
- 45:41I watched this movie a gazillion times.
- 45:44And I just noticed it. And I'll tell you about it.
- 45:46And it's it's it's fucked because they did it on purpose.
- 45:50They had to have because otherwise it's super dangerous.
- 45:55Anyways. OK, lazy Sunday vibes.
- 45:58For me, not really. This is more of a Friday night
- 46:02movie where you turn the lights off and you have a bucket of
- 46:04popcorn. It's a popcorn movie to me
- 46:06because it's it's not relaxing. You're biting your nails.
- 46:10You can't have a lazy Sunday where you're sitting there and
- 46:13you're all tense. Sure, sure.
- 46:15So for me, no. So for me, the opening where
- 46:21Jack gets his coffee and heads to work, it's a beautiful sunny
- 46:25day. That's all the vibes.
- 46:27That whole opening scene where he goes and he's chatting with
- 46:30the the barista and the bus driver before the bus driver
- 46:33gets blown to smithereens. It's not the opening scene.
- 46:36But that scene, like that's like, I get up in the morning, I
- 46:39make my coffee, I turn the TV on, just walking into the coffee
- 46:44shop. I'm fucking good to go.
- 46:46Like I'm watching that lazy Sunday vibes all the way.
- 46:49And then, you know, the the payphone rings and like, let's
- 46:52let's go. We're in.
- 46:53OK, so we feel differently. OK.
- 46:56This is your segment here Miscellaneous.
- 46:59We're not doing movie alias. I don't know, is that next?
- 47:02That was supposed to be next. Yeah, cool.
- 47:04I like that. It was like just a one word.
- 47:06So my options are one word. So instead of speed, it could
- 47:10just be called bus. Bus is good.
- 47:13Or Drive, which is also the name of Orange Gosling movie.
- 47:17But Drive works, and also, ironically because you brought
- 47:21it up earlier, nonstop. Yeah, nonstop would be.
- 47:24Good stop would have worked for this I mean.
- 47:26It would have been. You know it got used later
- 47:27obviously, but. Yeah, I couldn't think of
- 47:30anything honestly. The closest I got was stay above
- 47:3450. That's way too long.
- 47:37I know there's no other. That's what I'm saying.
- 47:39Like this movie title is perfect.
- 47:41It's really hard. Like you can't touch it.
- 47:43It's one word would have been. One word.
- 47:46Yeah. It gets pretty much everything
- 47:49across. Like you get what it's about.
- 47:52It's about going fast, you know what I mean?
- 47:54And it delivers. It does.
- 47:56It's fast. Unless you want to call it bomb
- 47:59on bus. Yeah, you could, but.
- 48:03That's all on the nose. Yeah, but you know what you're
- 48:05getting into though, when you see the commercials.
- 48:07Yeah, that's true. So the next segment is when I
- 48:10added it's called miscellaneous slash shower thoughts.
- 48:14Just because we didn't have a catch all for random thoughts,
- 48:17we had random commentary we had throughout the movie.
- 48:20Let's just call it shared thoughts.
- 48:21OK, we'll just call it shower thoughts.
- 48:23OK, go ahead. So I just wanted to note the
- 48:26button guy in the elevator scene is such a.
- 48:30Dick, he goes. Good job Bob.
- 48:32The button was already lit up, but good thing you pushed it
- 48:34again because it might really be broken.
- 48:37And then the elevator starts going down.
- 48:39He's like, what did you do, Bob? Yeah, Bob, like did you?
- 48:42Push Bob catches strays like crazy in that scene.
- 48:45Yeah, that guy's a Dick. So that's something that I
- 48:49thought was worth mentioning. Also, why did they tell the bus
- 48:55driver about the bomb before telling him he can't slow down?
- 48:59If you know there's a bomb on your bus, instinctively you're
- 49:02going to slow down or stop so that everybody can get off the
- 49:05bus. I think he gives them the bomb
- 49:07on bus note and then just expects him to just keep.
- 49:10Driving. I think he didn't realize that
- 49:13the guy had already cracked 50 because the traffic was bad, so
- 49:16he was going slow. He was just getting on the
- 49:18freeway because he was looking at the speedometer.
- 49:20Right. No, immediately, No, he's like,
- 49:21don't slow down, don't slow down.
- 49:23That's true. So he knows that it was already
- 49:26it was already armed. You should not have told them.
- 49:29You should have said don't go below 50 and then conveyed
- 49:33because if you do a bomb is going to.
- 49:35Explode. Also, I think that the bomber,
- 49:39he knew that Jack shows up because he has the camera on the
- 49:44bus. He's fully aware of what's going
- 49:46on. So I don't think he armed it
- 49:48until Jack showed up. No, it shows it getting armed
- 49:50before Jack is there. It shows the bus go above 50 and
- 49:54gets armed. OK, what else you got?
- 50:00I think that the stupid red herring of the carriage is
- 50:04stupid. The stroller, yeah, it's full of
- 50:07cans. Why wouldn't like?
- 50:09And the woman pushing it, from what I can see, does not seem
- 50:13like a homeless person like that had a cart full of cans.
- 50:15So why? Why is the carriage full of
- 50:17cans? Maybe she's not a homeless
- 50:19person, but maybe she's like one of those people that live like
- 50:22a, you know, they're not well to do.
- 50:24So she has enough clothes to like she has a place to live.
- 50:28Like maybe she lives in a trailer park or something and
- 50:32she the only form of her taking those cans to get money is just
- 50:36the stroller she has. Like that was, that was like a
- 50:38fancy pram stroller. Like that was a fancy stroller,
- 50:42yeah, but it wasn't a. Release it wasn't fancy.
- 50:44In the 90s they would have said that's garbage, you know what I
- 50:48mean? I don't think so.
- 50:49I think that that was because it had like the little shade over
- 50:51top, like they could lay a baby down in.
- 50:53Those are like not your regular stroller.
- 50:55That's the one you get when the baby's really small.
- 50:58It only lasts for like 6 months and then you move on to another
- 51:00one That's. A rich people never seen one in
- 51:02real life that wasn't the children's toy.
- 51:05Well, it it's because it was in the 90s, I don't think that they
- 51:09exist anymore. So, well, no, actually I have
- 51:11seen them. I I have a point for that,
- 51:13actually, for Charlotte. Thoughts.
- 51:15Yeah, I think that scene, the baby stroller full of cans is
- 51:20terrifying even now, even though I know it's full of cans.
- 51:24It was only cans. It's just cans.
- 51:26Yeah, they start laughing. It's like.
- 51:28That scene, that's the first time I've watched it.
- 51:32I think as a parent, I think maybe we watched it in the last
- 51:39couple of years. But anyway, that move, that
- 51:42scene, I know it's full of cans, but watching that stroller go
- 51:45flying gave me some trauma, bro. I was like fucked up for a few
- 51:50seconds because I don't know, like it's just terrifying.
- 51:54Well, I could mention that in the next segment too.
- 51:56I have like a little anecdote that goes with that.
- 51:58OK, well anyways, you brought it up so I'm in the shower.
- 52:01Thoughts. What else?
- 52:02What else you have? I have a laundry list.
- 52:06Here but I just thought it was funny that they say Jack a lot
- 52:09and it's pre Titanic because Jack is also over set in
- 52:13Titanic. Well, it's all the action heroes
- 52:15are always Jack or John. John.
- 52:17McLean, John. Matrix.
- 52:19Jackson, John. Jack this, Jack that.
- 52:22Yes, the. Jackal.
- 52:23But they say they say Jack a lot and I just thought it was funny
- 52:26because in Titanic Rose also says Jack way too much.
- 52:30They're always jacking it. Pissed that they killed Harry.
- 52:34That was fucked up. Yeah, I mean.
- 52:37He was the best character and he looks at that bomb, he knows
- 52:40he's fucked. Like that was unnecessary.
- 52:42He did not have to die. That makes it so.
- 52:44He did. He did have to die to push the
- 52:47story forward. No, yes, he is what keeps Jack
- 52:51level and calm and makes him see straight.
- 52:54He's his guide. Like he's is almost like his
- 52:56guardian Angel and everybody likes Harry.
- 53:00And the fact that the villain kills him and then calls him up
- 53:04and fucking trolls him on the phone.
- 53:06That's average bro, like that's what makes the villain so good
- 53:11and you killed like one of the favorite characters.
- 53:14Well, yeah, he's literally my favorite.
- 53:16I was, I I was pissed the first time I watched that movie.
- 53:18I was shocked that happened. And every time when I know that
- 53:21part is coming, I dread it because he's such a good
- 53:23character. That's why it's such a good
- 53:25good. Movie.
- 53:25It's a bummer man. And I just have one last shower
- 53:28thought. Why is this asshole complaining
- 53:31about money when he has a nice single home in fucking LA?
- 53:36Yeah, that's. True.
- 53:36Why why do you need millions if he hung out hold onto that house
- 53:40for 10 years would be worth millions of.
- 53:43Dollars. We don't know what part of LA he
- 53:44lives in like I don't know at. All it had a nice yard and it
- 53:48was a nice single. Maybe down the road there's.
- 53:51It wasn't incompetent. Bunch of gangs I don't know.
- 53:54It wasn't in Compton. You could tell us a nice.
- 53:57We don't know what nice is in LA and what's not.
- 53:59It looked like a nice house. It looks like a nice house, so
- 54:01that guy needs to just collect his tiny pension and shut the
- 54:03fuck up over to you. OK, so I got a few things here
- 54:08in Charlotte. Thoughts.
- 54:10So the reason why this movie is so thought through and so well
- 54:15thought out. When Jack gets off the bus the
- 54:17first time, he tells everybody I'll be back.
- 54:20He jumps off the back door and gets on to that, grabs onto the
- 54:24police SUV and he's talking to Miles Dyson through the window.
- 54:31They don't stop, they keep driving.
- 54:34They're going like 70, 80 kilometres an hour because he
- 54:40has to go that speed for the bus, right?
- 54:43So jumps off the bus, they don't stop.
- 54:45You see the airport moving behind him.
- 54:48They could have pulled over and talked, but they didn't.
- 54:51The second the Jack gets out of his gets off of the phone and
- 54:56it's off the payphone in the beginning, he does not stop.
- 55:00This guy is in his car, he's driving full speed to the get to
- 55:03the bus. He gets out of his car, he runs
- 55:05to the bus. He gets into a Jaguar, speeds to
- 55:09catch the bus, jumps onto. It yeah, it's a good point.
- 55:11Fucking fat like he's not and then they and then the next time
- 55:16you see him from the SUV when he's talking while it's moving
- 55:19is he's on another truck getting on to the little.
- 55:22Buggy getting. Ready and I've never noticed
- 55:24that before I was like, holy shit.
- 55:26They really like they like they don't want this movie to slow
- 55:30down. I think it would have ruined the
- 55:31tempo. Is that the thing you said would
- 55:33have been dangerous? It wasn't on purpose.
- 55:35Yeah. Why?
- 55:36No, no, no. It's like, it's not like it
- 55:38doesn't make sense. You're watching this.
- 55:39Like, why are they still going like, pull over that bus, that
- 55:42SUV's not gonna blow up, you know what I mean?
- 55:44But it is dangerous. Like, why are you doing that?
- 55:47You have to do it to get them off.
- 55:49But now you're like, you're still doing it.
- 55:51I think it's movie tempo. They're controlling the speed of
- 55:54the movie. Yeah, if you see Jack just
- 55:55standing there chatting with people, it ruins the suspense.
- 55:59This movie came out June 10th, 1994.
- 56:03Do you know what happened one week after this movie?
- 56:06No. The O'jays.
- 56:09No way. Yeah, the OJ Simpson freeway
- 56:13chase. And he's driving a Bronco as
- 56:15well. Yeah, that's.
- 56:16And there's a clip. There's one little scene.
- 56:19It's a helicopter shot of Keanu's Bronco on the freeway.
- 56:23And I started smiling when I saw that.
- 56:26And I looked it up while we were watching.
- 56:28I'm like, there's no fucking way.
- 56:30So they were, they released this movie, um, June 10th, 94 and a
- 56:36week later OJ's freeway thing. So what wow, did he get the, you
- 56:42know, was he inspired? Who knows?
- 56:44No, he was trying to freaking flee the country.
- 56:48I mean, he wasn't going to Mexico.
- 56:50Yes, he was. Was he?
- 56:52Yes, he was headed for Mac. Was it?
- 56:54Yeah, he was headed for Mexico. I don't know.
- 56:56Also why did the bomber ask for 3.7 million?
- 57:00That's so fucking random. He says in the movie that he's
- 57:03very calculated and he said like he figured out the amount that
- 57:06he would need to live on. But like in the nineties, 3.7
- 57:10million, that's like a billion dollars today.
- 57:13To 4 What's this .7 business? Well, like I said, he's been
- 57:19he's he's a greedy little motherfucker.
- 57:21No, ask 4 million or five. Why are you picking 3.7?
- 57:24That's very random. That made no sense to me unless
- 57:28he calculated how what kind of money he could carry across of a
- 57:32border because he asked for specific bills and stuff like
- 57:37that. So maybe he weighed it and said,
- 57:39oh, this is the amount that I could physically carry because
- 57:41I'm an old guy with the bad arm and stuff.
- 57:43I just answered my own question. Yeah, there you go.
- 57:47Yeah, baby Stroller mentioned that also.
- 57:51What did the Hispanic guy do before the bus ride?
- 57:55When he's like, get away from me?
- 57:56He points a gun at Keanu, remember?
- 57:59He's coming down here for you, man.
- 58:01Let's not do this. There's probably a warrant out
- 58:04for his arrest for something. Maybe.
- 58:05But I want to know what he did like.
- 58:08Was it like, did he steal somebody's bike?
- 58:09He had a gun, so he probably had an unregistered.
- 58:12Yeah, maybe. Yeah.
- 58:15That part has aged a little bit poorly because it feels, it
- 58:19feels a little bit bad taste for the Hispanic guy to be a
- 58:22criminal. I mean, yeah, but you know what?
- 58:26It's LA. Yeah, but.
- 58:27So you don't know who's on that bus, right?
- 58:29It could be like, it's not always going to be people going
- 58:32to work. One thing I I was noticed, they
- 58:35should have had a couple of kids on the bus.
- 58:39It would have raised the stakes even more.
- 58:41Like when there's children involved, people like Yo.
- 58:45Yeah, but there's no way the kids would have been calm.
- 58:47Well, I think what happened, they got the bus driver off
- 58:50because he was injured. They would have let the kids off
- 58:52too. Yeah, You know, would have been
- 58:54like, don't bring kids into this.
- 58:55So. But he fucking blew up that old
- 58:58lady, so he might have tried to blow up.
- 58:59The kids That old lady was one of my least favorites, but I
- 59:02took her off the list. Oh, I yeah, I wanna change my
- 59:04least favorite to her. She was selfish.
- 59:06She's like, I need to get off the bus, Annie, I need to get
- 59:09off. Like what about us?
- 59:10What about us? Um, does this movie hit
- 59:15different as parents? So I literally just thought of
- 59:19this as we were talking about the stroller filled with cans.
- 59:22That scene is disturbing as a parent, especially like the I
- 59:28spent a lot of time pushing our son around in a stroller when he
- 59:31was a baby. And if it wasn't dead winter, I
- 59:34would be doing it with my daughter too.
- 59:36And I'm going to do it when it gets warmer.
- 59:38I'm going to be pushing her in the stroller.
- 59:39Any time I had to cross a busy road.
- 59:42Oh my God, I used to loop my arm under the stroller and then hold
- 59:46another piece of it just in case for some reason that I had like
- 59:50an arm spasm and let go for a second.
- 59:51Like that's how scared I was, the stroller rolling into a busy
- 59:54St. and I used to turn the stroller so like the wheels were
- 59:57not facing towards the busy St. like I used to take steps.
- 1:00:00Don't get dead. I used.
- 1:00:02Yeah, don't get. Crazy, not stupid.
- 1:00:04I used to keep, I used to take steps to make sure that that
- 1:00:07could not happen because that is one of my worst fears because a
- 1:00:10driver may not be able to stop in time and your precious little
- 1:00:12child is in that stroller like you're everything.
- 1:00:16So that part is very disturbing as a parent, but nothing else in
- 1:00:20the movie. There's not really much about
- 1:00:22kids going on. There's the 4 kids but she she
- 1:00:24she dodges them. So this movie hits different as
- 1:00:26a parent now. I watched this when I was very
- 1:00:29little. I've watched it as the years
- 1:00:32have gone by through my teenage years, early adulthood, now the
- 1:00:36age I mat. And it hits way different as a
- 1:00:39parent because you're like, you don't know, like those people on
- 1:00:44the bus, they're grandparents. Like Helen, the lady that blows
- 1:00:48up when she tries. That's somebody's grandma.
- 1:00:51She just. Got blown off, that's that.
- 1:00:53Yeah, those people on the bus, like he's talking to Ortiz or
- 1:00:57Gigantor. He's talking to Ferris Bueller.
- 1:01:00And he's like, I got a wife, you know, And I'm like, man, these
- 1:01:06people like, what if they have kids?
- 1:01:08They're just going to work, you know?
- 1:01:09Yeah. So it's it does it different.
- 1:01:12The stroller scene, it fucked me up.
- 1:01:15And as a parent, if I watched that the first time, I would
- 1:01:19have lost my mind. Especially with it, we have a
- 1:01:21baby, we have a 5 month old. So especially having like a very
- 1:01:25small baby, they're very innocent.
- 1:01:28They can't fend for themselves whatsoever.
- 1:01:30So just thinking about that, it's really, it's messed up.
- 1:01:34Yeah, I I agree. OK, so this is the new rating
- 1:01:38system that I've come up with. How many baby strollers full of
- 1:01:41cans you give it out of 10? Well, that's how I'm doing it
- 1:01:44now. Every movie.
- 1:01:45It's going to be a different. That's going to associate with
- 1:01:48the. Movie.
- 1:01:48I give it seven baby strollers out of 10.
- 1:01:50OK. And because we didn't review
- 1:01:53Jurassic Park at the end of our last breakfast, we didn't rate
- 1:01:57it. Sorry.
- 1:01:58So we're going to give it a rating now.
- 1:02:01So what did you give Speed? How many people?
- 1:02:03Seven baby strollers. I give speed nine baby strollers
- 1:02:06out of full of cans out of 10. That's too much.
- 1:02:09That's your opinion. We'll do Drastic Park after.
- 1:02:12Yeah, that was speed. Ladies and gentlemen, I hope
- 1:02:15that the audio was a lot better. We got some new mics, so I'm
- 1:02:19hoping it's nice and crisp in your ears.
- 1:02:23You know, I hope it makes your ears sizzle.
- 1:02:25And I hope you enjoyed that episode.
- 1:02:28If you haven't seen Speed, go watch it.
- 1:02:30It's on Disney Plus. Or you can just probably watch
- 1:02:34it on TV because it's on, like, the Movie Network all the time,
- 1:02:37if you still have that thing. But yeah, that's our episode for
- 1:02:41tonight. We will catch you next.
- 1:02:43Time catch you next time. It was just cons.
- 1:02:47It was only cons. Take my hand, Take my hand.
- 1:02:53How many out of 10 do you give Jurassic Park?
- 1:02:58So I can't do that noise, especially with my sore throat.
- 1:03:01So I'll say how many Raptor calls out of 10?
- 1:03:04Yes, I give it 10 out of 10. Jurassic Park is a perfect
- 1:03:08movie. I give Jurassic Park 10 out of
- 1:03:1110. That's so good and we just want
- 1:03:19to know it. Also, after last week's episode
- 1:03:22came out or the last episode came out, the next day a
- 1:03:27Jurassic Park themed Super Bowl commercial dropped and it had
- 1:03:31Jeff Goldblum in it, Laura Dern and Sam Neil, and that was
- 1:03:35completely unplanned. Yeah, the cake, like it happened
- 1:03:38the same day. Crazy, crazy that that happened.
- 1:03:42Winky Dink OK, we have an Instagram page.
- 1:03:46If there's any movies that you want to see or see us review,
- 1:03:51please let us know and we'll do them.
