- 1:08Speaker 1: My weekend? You know, I don't be doing much. I
- 1:11Speaker 1: might I might be in Charlotte this weekend, possibly for
- 1:14Speaker 1: my niece's twenty eighth birthday, but I'd be enjoying my
- 1:18Speaker 1: solitude pretty much, can lie Okay, I'd be looking forward
- 1:22Speaker 1: to doing fucking nothing. Yeah, it feels good. It feels
- 1:26Speaker 1: really good. I'm just doing what I want to do
- 1:28Speaker 1: because I got to travel and all that shit. I'd
- 1:29Speaker 1: be like, did you have a weekend? Not so much. No,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I need a weekend after the weekend, right, would just
- 1:39Speaker 1: be wanting to do Costco on TJ Max. That's it
- 1:41Speaker 1: for the weekend.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Girl, you need a TJ Max. We need a Costco sponsorship.
- 1:47Speaker 1: They asked me every time if I want that TJ
- 1:49Speaker 1: Max credit card? Like, girl, I'm trying to buy a
- 1:51Speaker 1: damn house. No, I don't need that credit card. I
- 1:54Speaker 1: do need that credit.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Card credit card for your house.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Right, need is a booster with an unlimited gift card.
- 2:02Speaker 1: That's what I do need.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It me and somebody.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It was Ben at Dick Ben Dick's homecoming this weekend.
- 2:10Speaker 1: BC that I didn't need participating. I didn't either.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I was right.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I did not go. I did not feel good. I
- 2:19Speaker 2: went to Chicago last week and I don't know, I
- 2:22Speaker 2: must have came like something about that flight. I was coughing.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I still you can hear it A
- 2:27Speaker 2: little bitsy.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Girl, I was picturing you in the field eating barbecue,
- 2:33Speaker 1: like I just knew you was out.
- 2:34Speaker 2: There, and that was the plan. That was the plan.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But I felt so bad. I stayed here. I slept
- 2:39Speaker 2: till three o'clock on Saturday. I took the day off
- 2:43Speaker 2: to go to the game, and then slept till three o'clock.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I didn't make it. I just felt damn. I just
- 2:48Speaker 2: felt bad, and I was so sad. I was looking
- 2:51Speaker 2: at all the pictures of everybody at homecoming. I was like,
- 2:54Speaker 2: I wouldn't need to go, but you know, your body
- 2:57Speaker 2: will sit you down.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So yeah, so I didn't pull a trigger on a costume.
- 3:02Speaker 1: That's really why I didn't go either.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I have nothing to wear for Halloween, and I know
- 3:05Speaker 1: they was having like the good little, good old Halloween.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You could have just bought some and put it on
- 3:09Speaker 2: your head. Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 1: No, I wanted to dress up you know who. I
- 3:13Speaker 1: wanted to dress up as Alvira from Scarface. Remember she
- 3:18Speaker 1: came down and elevating that green dress with the with
- 3:20Speaker 1: the blonde bob, Like, that's what I wanted to dress
- 3:23Speaker 1: up as. Alf It's Alvera in it. Alfita, it's Elvera.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Another kl you love me in the morning her right, Yeah, scarface,
- 3:36Speaker 2: just gonna put some cocoa your nose, yeh.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Think about that.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Maybe, yes, I missed that. I just kind of rested.
- 3:50Speaker 2: That was it.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Man, When your body tell you to lay down, lay
- 3:53Speaker 1: the fuck down, like you know I am. I don't
- 3:56Speaker 1: be pushing myself to do ship. I don't want to
- 3:59Speaker 1: do no more. I just don't. You know, if a
- 4:01Speaker 1: little bit of me say do it, I'm gonna do it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But if everything in me say bitch nor, I'm not
- 4:07Speaker 1: doing it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And I didn't do my hair because I felt bad.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You know, you just don't have the energy. I was like,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I ain't going out there with the same old quick week,
- 4:15Speaker 2: so I ain't go and you just still look better
- 4:20Speaker 2: than boom.
- 4:21Speaker 1: A large percentage, A large percentage.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Let's get this in.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah, going on? Okay, So, y'all, I don't know if
- 4:31Speaker 1: y'all saw this story on social media, which is just
- 4:34Speaker 1: a black woman who has a Golds gym membership's she's
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the gym and in walks a grown ass man. Okay,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and it's supposedly allegedly a trans woman. Okay, but this
- 4:50Speaker 1: man just has on earrings. And the thing is, most
- 4:52Speaker 1: of the trans people don't even be like actual trans
- 4:55Speaker 1: they haven't actually transitioned, you know, they still have their
- 4:58Speaker 1: male parts and they're showing up in female spaces. And
- 5:03Speaker 1: one thing this woman did say, she said, if you
- 5:06Speaker 1: are a trans woman, you actually like, y'all don't even
- 5:09Speaker 1: respect actual women's minds at all, you know, because if you,
- 5:14Speaker 1: if you were a woman, you would respect women's minds.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And they just don't. Like That's why it's still a man.
- 5:20Speaker 1: It's very manly. What's that doing.
- 5:23Speaker 2: So this person walked into the female locker room and
- 5:26Speaker 2: the black lady went crazy.
- 5:29Speaker 1: She was butt naked in there, and a grown man
- 5:32Speaker 1: walks in and she said it in the middle of
- 5:34Speaker 1: GOLs gym. And she's a lesbian to add that to
- 5:37Speaker 1: the to the pod, right, she's a lesbian herself. And
- 5:39Speaker 1: she says, you know a lot of y'all trans men
- 5:43Speaker 1: like y'all, y'all were never little girls like y'all never
- 5:46Speaker 1: been touched before. Like she was like that shit, like
- 5:48Speaker 1: does something to me? Right, And a lot of women
- 5:50Speaker 1: I think are have had things happen to them, you
- 5:55Speaker 1: know why they don't fuck with men, right and then
- 5:57Speaker 1: now here it is you have this, this, you can't
- 6:00Speaker 1: do anything about it. And she's the one who was
- 6:02Speaker 1: put out, which.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I thought was weird. But maybe I think they put
- 6:06Speaker 2: her out because she was raising hell that the woman.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Was allegedly kicked out and terminated from Goals gym all
- 6:14Speaker 1: because she doesn't want to see penises unsolicited in a
- 6:17Speaker 1: woman's locker room. There's some bullshit. Yeah, so this is
- 6:22Speaker 1: in LA. Also, the post says, so remember this when
- 6:26Speaker 1: Gavin Newsom decides to run for president, this is what
- 6:30Speaker 1: you got to look forward to. Like, we got a
- 6:31Speaker 1: little break from this ship right now. I feel like,
- 6:34Speaker 1: I'm sorry, y'all. Y'all don't feel like this shit died
- 6:37Speaker 1: down just a little tidy bit, you know, since the
- 6:40Speaker 1: beginning of the year, because I do.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I just think we got on other stuff. That's why
- 6:45Speaker 2: we haven't been focused on this. Niggas ain't got no
- 6:48Speaker 2: food stamps, stay worried about no dicks right now? In
- 6:51Speaker 2: that part, Yeah, but I feel her like because I
- 6:56Speaker 2: don't like getting unsolicited dick picks, and I like, did
- 7:00Speaker 2: you know? So imagine if you don't and you're just
- 7:04Speaker 2: trying to exercise and be healthy and you got to
- 7:07Speaker 2: see a random dick. Yeah, I feel her.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You know, have you have you had ever had any
- 7:14Speaker 1: conversations with guys and they tell you their experience in
- 7:17Speaker 1: the locker rooms and the gyms and how it be
- 7:19Speaker 1: niggas in there with thongs on.
- 7:21Speaker 2: No, I've never heard that.
- 7:24Speaker 1: You know in Charlotte that my homeboy goes to the
- 7:28Speaker 1: club fitness off of university. You know, a pack that
- 7:32Speaker 1: should be like a real club. It's real live club
- 7:34Speaker 1: fitness in that bitch, right, But he said, niggas be
- 7:37Speaker 1: like the punks, Okay, the punks, the girls be in
- 7:40Speaker 1: the locker room with the thongs on. Like what is
- 7:46Speaker 1: a heterosexual man supposed to do with that?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Mind his business?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Right like that? But I feel like that's a little
- 7:57Speaker 1: that's a little violation as well.
- 7:59Speaker 2: No, because as long as he in his right locker room,
- 8:02Speaker 2: you can't do nothing about what a nigga got on
- 8:05Speaker 2: mine your business.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You're like this squad, look at it. I'm not gonna
- 8:13Speaker 1: lie and my exercise folder or Instagram while I put
- 8:16Speaker 1: all the shit that I have not done yet in
- 8:18Speaker 1: the gym that I'm watching everybody else do on their page.
- 8:22Speaker 1: It means some baby booty niggas. I got in my
- 8:26Speaker 1: save folder.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Workouts and he'd be doing like this little squad workout. Yes,
- 8:33Speaker 2: his but look good. I know he got a throng
- 8:36Speaker 2: on none of there. I know he's never high or
- 8:39Speaker 2: free balling too. So I don't know if you guys
- 8:48Speaker 2: saw this, but mother of R and B singer Sammy
- 8:52Speaker 2: arrested on charges of second degree murder and shooting into
- 8:56Speaker 2: a vehicle, allegedly killing twenty seven and your old wife
- 9:00Speaker 2: and mother of two.
- 9:02Speaker 1: So I don't know if if y'all you might have
- 9:05Speaker 1: cut out a little bit, but you did, did say
- 9:07Speaker 1: mother of Sammy? Not Sammy?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Oh?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yes, Sammy, the R and B singer His mom.
- 9:13Speaker 2: His mom was shooting randomly at cars because she thought
- 9:19Speaker 2: someone was following her, and she shot into a car
- 9:24Speaker 2: that was carrying a twenty seven year old Nakia bah
- 9:28Speaker 2: Collier and she was found shot on enough Powers drive
- 9:34Speaker 2: and she died. And so now his mother is facing
- 9:39Speaker 2: charges for second degree murder. And I think, you know,
- 9:43Speaker 2: people be suffering from mental illness, and sometimes we're not
- 9:46Speaker 2: doing enough, you know, because we be knowing. I'm sure
- 9:51Speaker 2: his new I knew his mama was I'm sure he
- 9:54Speaker 2: knew his mama wanting right, you know, but.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Can you really do right? So there's no cure for
- 10:03Speaker 1: mental illness. I think a lot of it might take accountability,
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know, the person having to take accountability that they
- 10:10Speaker 1: even have a problem, and then they got to want
- 10:12Speaker 1: to want the help, right, So people they medicate, these
- 10:16Speaker 1: people in abe zombies, and people get tired of not
- 10:19Speaker 1: being themselves. You know, this is a plethora of reasons
- 10:23Speaker 1: why people don't, you know, stick to the meds and
- 10:25Speaker 1: stuff like that. But what are you what can you
- 10:28Speaker 1: really do? You know?
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean, at least try to keep these
- 10:33Speaker 2: people up, try to keep getting away from her motherfucking ass.
- 10:36Speaker 1: That's true. I mean, but this is a grown woman,
- 10:39Speaker 1: this is a grown adult. They probably don't live together.
- 10:41Speaker 1: She you know, probably on her own, and maybe she
- 10:44Speaker 1: has never done anything. This is extreme extreme, you know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: so maybe just recently escalated. And this is this is
- 10:54Speaker 1: actually weird and terrible. I'm very said, very much so.
- 10:59Speaker 2: And I think he in jail too, ain't it He
- 11:01Speaker 2: in jail on some child cruelty shit?
- 11:03Speaker 1: Oh sammy, Yeah, I hadn't heard that.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he just went to jail last week too on
- 11:09Speaker 2: some child cruelty shit.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You're making that up? No, let me see y'all. Of course, Sammy,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I've been hanging out.
- 11:17Speaker 2: With ray J, ray J and Brandy hugged it out.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Really yep, that's on stage.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Okay, so I do see. It's as Sammy invested and
- 11:30Speaker 1: charged with charged with cruelty to children and battery. This
- 11:35Speaker 1: is on October twenty six. Was recently invested in Atlanta, Georgia,
- 11:38Speaker 1: following an incident where he was charged with cruelty to
- 11:40Speaker 1: children and battery. Although no additional details have been reported,
- 11:45Speaker 1: Sammy has since been released, as he recently shared a
- 11:48Speaker 1: post regarding one music fest this weekend. Okay, yeah, so
- 11:55Speaker 1: he had cruelty to children, third degree witness something and
- 12:01Speaker 1: then battery, family violence and then fugitive in state like
- 12:06Speaker 1: what and he posted just a picture like headed to
- 12:10Speaker 1: one music Festall what y'all on? What y'all on? Like
- 12:17Speaker 1: once he got out? Like what I mean, Listen, I
- 12:21Speaker 1: don't never need nobody to make a statement about some
- 12:23Speaker 1: shit life be happening, all type of we don't know
- 12:26Speaker 1: what transpired. We know that men definitely violate people, right
- 12:30Speaker 1: and we're not saying all men, but it's always a man.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And we know that some women be making it hard
- 12:36Speaker 1: for some men to be pearents and your ass might
- 12:39Speaker 1: end up in jail and some shit you ain't do.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I'm just, you know, just not even playing devil's advocate,
- 12:44Speaker 1: just showing both sides of the thing when you don't
- 12:46Speaker 1: have all the information. So I don't know. I didn't
- 12:48Speaker 1: even hear about that shit, So I wonder what came
- 12:50Speaker 1: of it. Is it true?
- 12:51Speaker 2: And he's key to make you fucked him up?
- 12:54Speaker 1: You hear me, okay, girl? Like I remember one time
- 13:00Speaker 1: liking bad kids. I ain't gonna lie, man, I don't
- 13:02Speaker 1: know if I know. I wasn't like a super bad kid,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but i'd be liking bad kids a little bit.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I don't like them. I remember one time we were
- 13:09Speaker 2: on vacation. We were in Brussels, and me and my sister
- 13:14Speaker 2: and it was her two kids. It was like a
- 13:15Speaker 2: bunch of family on this trip to Brussels, and we
- 13:19Speaker 2: were walking and my niece was being so terrible, like
- 13:23Speaker 2: she just would not listen. She's just doing what the
- 13:27Speaker 2: fuck she wanted. And my sister was at her wits
- 13:31Speaker 2: end and My sister walked up to me and grabbed
- 13:33Speaker 2: me by my shoulders and she said, Tammy, I need
- 13:39Speaker 2: you to get your niece cause I'm going to kill
- 13:42Speaker 2: her today if you don't. And I believed her like
- 13:48Speaker 2: she did. It wasn't like I was scared for my niece,
- 13:51Speaker 2: Like girl, yo, Mama about to in you out this motherfucker.
- 13:55Speaker 2: So kids will make you want to kill they assad,
- 14:01Speaker 2: So it might have.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Been got a lot of patience.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Man, she's not. She's she's the very peaceful calm. That's
- 14:12Speaker 2: why when she said that, I was like, oh shit,
- 14:15Speaker 2: you don't turn my peaceful sister ready to kill your
- 14:19Speaker 2: motherfucking ass. Come on, come here, let me take my hand,
- 14:22Speaker 2: because you're about to die today if you don't tighten up.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Badasses.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but not not advocating for child abuse or anything,
- 14:34Speaker 2: but these kids will take you through there, right.
- 14:38Speaker 1: That's why I never understand like especially the teenagers, like
- 14:41Speaker 1: I do not believe you should be putting your hands
- 14:43Speaker 1: on little people like when they get about ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen,
- 14:47Speaker 1: bust they ass up, okay, but like little ones not
- 14:52Speaker 1: so much. But like the preteens, yeah, it's time for
- 14:55Speaker 1: them to get their hair busts if they if you
- 14:57Speaker 1: maybe you messed up a little bit of something, gave
- 14:59Speaker 1: them too much wade when they were a little bit younger,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and now they like really acting out. But I don't know.
- 15:04Speaker 1: My nieces, my nieces and nephews like they real good people,
- 15:08Speaker 1: good kids, you know, they never I gotta take that back.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I actually my niece, my oldest niece, that bitch was
- 15:17Speaker 1: a terror. It's a little kid, right, yes, And I
- 15:21Speaker 1: used to like because I don't believe in people like
- 15:25Speaker 1: I could not wait for her to get her rasshop
- 15:27Speaker 1: I'm in. One day my mama beat her rass so
- 15:29Speaker 1: bad and Applebee's girl, I was in the car like, yes, yes,
- 15:36Speaker 1: like she just was cutting up for no reason, like
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know, like a low four year old five year
- 15:40Speaker 1: old just cutting up. Nah, she popped that little butt up.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I was so happy that ask I'd be And one
- 15:48Speaker 1: time my nephew. My nephew is not bad, but he
- 15:52Speaker 1: like has always thought he was the smartest in the room,
- 15:54Speaker 1: even as a little two three year old and he
- 15:57Speaker 1: might have been about seven and eight. And my sister
- 16:01Speaker 1: husband his dad beat his ass.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Boy.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I was so happy she had that niggas spinning around
- 16:06Speaker 1: the kitchen floor like a little windmill. I was, so,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'm like, y'all, don let him get away with so
- 16:10Speaker 1: much shit. I've watched these couple of days I've been
- 16:12Speaker 1: over here. Beat that ass anyway?
- 16:16Speaker 2: Please?
- 16:17Speaker 1: All right, y'all, you know I gotta add in that
- 16:20Speaker 1: messy meme segment again because I'd be saving all types
- 16:23Speaker 1: of shit. I got a folder I call that's called
- 16:25Speaker 1: memes for talking shit. That's the folding for like funny
- 16:29Speaker 1: should I see?
- 16:30Speaker 3: So?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Rich Dollars tweeted the other day and he said, you
- 16:36Speaker 1: in a section with your friends and your man? Is
- 16:39Speaker 1: it inappropriate for your homegirls to start to working? Question mark?
- 16:44Speaker 1: Somebody commented a girl camming and she was like, if
- 16:46Speaker 1: we in a section with my man, nine times out
- 16:49Speaker 1: of ten he paid for it. Some bitches better be
- 16:51Speaker 1: shaking ass all night long. And I agree, because what
- 16:55Speaker 1: are we doing if we ain't shaking ass?
- 16:59Speaker 2: I agree? And we can't dance? Why are we here?
- 17:04Speaker 2: Who want to be in a station where we gotta
- 17:06Speaker 2: stand still because somebody man can't be trusted or whatever.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Right, that's what it's given to me. So I don't
- 17:13Speaker 1: know if he's posting a question from perspective of a
- 17:16Speaker 1: man or perspective of a woman whose friends is shaking
- 17:20Speaker 1: ass in the section with her nigga like, I don't
- 17:21Speaker 1: know which. Either one doesn't make sense to me, because
- 17:24Speaker 1: why why why can't shake ass? Well, I'm going to
- 17:29Speaker 1: another nigga section if I can't shake ass in your
- 17:31Speaker 1: nigga section, right.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Because if my song come home, I don't want to
- 17:34Speaker 2: be looking like can you send your man to the
- 17:36Speaker 2: bathroom withst Island?
- 17:37Speaker 1: Like I don't need that, Like can you cover his eyes?
- 17:41Speaker 3: Right?
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a weird question, And I wonder what happened?
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, me too, And I think you know, I don't know.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Sometimes I was leaning some more towards like him posting
- 17:54Speaker 1: this question because of how he felt with his girl
- 17:58Speaker 1: friends shaking ass in a section, right, mm hmmm, because
- 18:01Speaker 1: niggas be thinking everybody want them right, all right? So
- 18:06Speaker 1: we inter section, My friends are here and they dancing,
- 18:09Speaker 1: and now we leave from the club, and you, like,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you see how your friend was shaking their ass in
- 18:13Speaker 1: front of me. It wasn't for you, though. We know
- 18:16Speaker 1: that men be thinking everything before them for them, even pussy.
- 18:21Speaker 1: They never have before as.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Long as as long as my friend ain't putting the
- 18:24Speaker 2: ass on him. It's sometimes even that might be a
- 18:27Speaker 2: little okay, it's just appears, you know, if we set
- 18:32Speaker 2: it up right.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But I don't know that I care. And the older
- 18:38Speaker 1: I get, the less shit I care about. Right, I'm
- 18:41Speaker 1: already like my mind set, it's already. You're not sixty
- 18:43Speaker 1: seven year old black women. Be like, I don't give
- 18:45Speaker 1: a fuck. I don't give a shit, like I've been
- 18:48Speaker 1: there for the last for the last few years now,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like I don't care. You can bag them, baby, you
- 18:54Speaker 1: can have him, take him, take him, because he in
- 18:57Speaker 1: my mind in the first place.
- 18:58Speaker 2: All right, if you can he ain't mine, Please go
- 19:01Speaker 2: ahead and take him. Y'all.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Have at it.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying that shit, maybe I'm blocking y'all.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Blessings who knows right, have at it. You won't switch
- 19:10Speaker 1: something like you got another nigga for me. Let's swap
- 19:13Speaker 1: it out, all right, y'all. Anyway, listen, we have an
- 19:19Speaker 1: amazing guest on we talked back this week, mister Michael Johnson.
- 19:24Speaker 1: He is the CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs
- 19:27Speaker 1: in Dane County, Minnesota. Okay, the illis Nigga from Minnesota,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and he's talking leadership. He recently had a book released
- 19:37Speaker 1: all the good shit, you know, the things we need
- 19:39Speaker 1: to hear. Okay, because we are multifaceted here on we
- 19:42Speaker 1: talk back, Okay, So y'all stay tuned. We'll be back, y'all.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Before we get into today's guest, I just need to
- 19:57Speaker 2: speak to y'all about something that's really been pulling at
- 20:01Speaker 2: my heartstrings. We haven't been seeing a lot on it,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but our brothers and sisters in Jamaica they really going
- 20:09Speaker 2: through it. Like the news kind of has seemed to
- 20:12Speaker 2: stop reporting on what's going on in Jamaica. But these
- 20:16Speaker 2: people are without clothes, These people are without food, These
- 20:19Speaker 2: people are without electricity. Their homes have been like completely
- 20:23Speaker 2: washed away. And I have a friend there and he uh,
- 20:29Speaker 2: he works in tourism and one of his employees she
- 20:33Speaker 2: is a woman, a single mother of four children, and
- 20:36Speaker 2: her home was completely destroyed and y'all, she has nothing.
- 20:42Speaker 2: And he was on the phone with me and he
- 20:44Speaker 2: was crying talking about this because he don't even have
- 20:48Speaker 2: a lot. He's trying to give her what he has,
- 20:51Speaker 2: but he don't have shit to give her either. And
- 20:54Speaker 2: when I spoke to him, it just really it really
- 20:57Speaker 2: upset me. And you know, I just want to use
- 21:01Speaker 2: this platform to try to seek some help. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 2: like even if y'all could send a dollar, two dollars,
- 21:13Speaker 2: anything would help. It's a lot of us and this
- 21:17Speaker 2: is a black woman and she really needs our help.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I mean, if y'all can sacrifice something, I would greatly
- 21:25Speaker 2: appreciate it to help this woman. And even if you
- 21:28Speaker 2: want to actually send goods, she has children. So this
- 21:33Speaker 2: is I got an address that y'all can send goods
- 21:36Speaker 2: to if you want to send it straight to them,
- 21:39Speaker 2: and it's the address would be Hopetown. That's h Ope
- 21:45Speaker 2: t O n E District, Hope Tone PO Saint James,
- 21:51Speaker 2: Montego Bay, Jamaica. W I. I'm gonna say that one
- 21:56Speaker 2: more time. It's Michael Solomon, Hope Tone h O P
- 22:02Speaker 2: t O n E District, Hope Tone P dot O
- 22:08Speaker 2: Saint James, Montego Bay, Jamaica, w dot I And I'm
- 22:13Speaker 2: going to post on my story and then my excuse me,
- 22:16Speaker 2: y'all in my bio where you can actually send a
- 22:20Speaker 2: couple dollars. Y'all, please, we got to help this black woman.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And it's so many people that need help. But if
- 22:26Speaker 2: you could sacrifice even just a couple of dollars to
- 22:29Speaker 2: help this black family right before the holidays, I would
- 22:32Speaker 2: appreciate it. All Right, I love y'all. All right, we'll
- 22:35Speaker 2: be with our guests in just a moment.
- 22:42Speaker 1: All right, y'all. So today we have a very sexual
- 22:45Speaker 1: guest on we talk back. We have mister Michael Johnson. Okay,
- 22:50Speaker 1: he is the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club.
- 22:54Speaker 3: What's the city, Dane County.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Dean County, Madison, Wisconsin.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, sorry.
- 23:01Speaker 3: First of all, it's good. I said the same thing
- 23:05Speaker 3: when I first came here sixteen years ago.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Dan, Are you the only black person in Wisconsin?
- 23:13Speaker 4: It's a lot of it's a lot of black people here,
- 23:16Speaker 4: and well, we make up about six percent of the population,
- 23:20Speaker 4: and so it's it's a tight niche black community here,
- 23:24Speaker 4: but we're well represented.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Are you from Wisconsin?
- 23:29Speaker 3: Now, I'm from the West side of Chicago.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Oh, that's right, Chicago.
- 23:32Speaker 3: So y'all, y'all need to come. We throw some dope
- 23:34Speaker 3: parties up here.
- 23:35Speaker 4: I do an all white party, and it's not just
- 23:38Speaker 4: for white people. It's mainly black folks dressed up in
- 23:42Speaker 4: all white, and we usually bring a bunch of celebrities
- 23:46Speaker 4: down here. So every year of you like Google, you'll
- 23:48Speaker 4: see like the Lorenz tating his brothers, or Leon or
- 23:52Speaker 4: Gladys Knight, or one year I had Drew Hill, so
- 23:57Speaker 4: we bring him out and we have a good time.
- 24:00Speaker 4: We raised money for kids, and I hope y'all are
- 24:03Speaker 4: coming hang out with us.
- 24:04Speaker 1: One summer we come in Winlaren's state coming back though I.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Was every year.
- 24:09Speaker 4: I was on his family Foundation board for a couple
- 24:13Speaker 4: of years. So he's been here probably four or five
- 24:16Speaker 4: times in the last two years.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Okay, what's the weather like right now?
- 24:22Speaker 3: It's cold.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Well, it's not like South Carolina, so he gets cold
- 24:27Speaker 4: up here. But it's about thirty five degrees right now.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Okay, it's pretty I mean South Carolina gets cold. Don't
- 24:35Speaker 2: get it twisted. We get cold weather, but it's probably
- 24:37Speaker 2: not Wisconsin cold.
- 24:40Speaker 4: And life is about, you know, exploring. I've lived all
- 24:43Speaker 4: over the country. I lived in Chicago, I lived in Philadelphia,
- 24:46Speaker 4: I lived in Saint Louis, I've lived in Indianapolis, I
- 24:49Speaker 4: lived in Cincinnati. You know, life is about experiences, so
- 24:53Speaker 4: I think you'll come up here to Madison and probably
- 24:55Speaker 4: never want to go back home.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Oh wow, like Saint Louis because I live I lived
- 25:01Speaker 1: in Saint Louis for like four or five years, and man,
- 25:05Speaker 1: every morning I would wake up like what am I
- 25:07Speaker 1: store here? A prison? You know what I'm saying?
- 25:11Speaker 4: Like, like, I stayed in Saint Louis for I think
- 25:16Speaker 4: I was there three years.
- 25:17Speaker 3: And it's just about who you connected to, right, Like
- 25:20Speaker 3: you can get to a city.
- 25:21Speaker 1: It's a lot of socialism, right, it.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Is, it is it is. But I would say that's
- 25:26Speaker 4: almost everywhere.
- 25:28Speaker 1: When I say that, I mean like it's not like,
- 25:30Speaker 1: you know, some cities, like we're from South Carolina, so
- 25:34Speaker 1: we can say, like maybe it might be a little racist,
- 25:36Speaker 1: but really like Saint Louis is about who has money
- 25:39Speaker 1: and who doesn't. It's not really about skin color race.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, I don't know. I've seen it
- 25:49Speaker 4: at different levels in different cities. And and again it's
- 25:54Speaker 4: kind of like how you allow people to divin defind
- 25:57Speaker 4: you what circles you know that you're And people told
- 26:01Speaker 4: me not to come to Madison, Wisconsin because of X
- 26:05Speaker 4: y Z. And I'm the type of person sometimes you
- 26:08Speaker 4: just got to follow your dreams and go where the
- 26:12Speaker 4: calling is right. And so and that's kind of like
- 26:16Speaker 4: how I've just lived my life. But I wouldn't say
- 26:18Speaker 4: you're wrong, but I would say what you're saying. I've
- 26:21Speaker 4: seen segments of it in other cities as well.
- 26:25Speaker 2: So was it the Boys and Girls Club that brought
- 26:27Speaker 2: you to Madison? Like how did you get involved with
- 26:29Speaker 2: the Boys and Girls Club?
- 26:31Speaker 4: So, I actually grew up in the Boys and Girls
- 26:35Speaker 4: Club and I talk about it in my book. So
- 26:38Speaker 4: I grew up in the Boys and Girls Club on
- 26:39Speaker 4: the West side of Chicago. It was Boys and Girls
- 26:42Speaker 4: Clubs when I was working part time that when my
- 26:45Speaker 4: mother didn't have health insurance, they raised.
- 26:48Speaker 3: The money to bury my mother.
- 26:51Speaker 4: It was the Boys and Girls Clubs as a kid
- 26:53Speaker 4: that kept me off the streets, and I would say
- 26:56Speaker 4: pretty much kept me alive.
- 26:58Speaker 3: And I was also a kid that could not read.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I could not write.
- 27:02Speaker 4: And today you know, I run a multimillion dollar nonprofit
- 27:06Speaker 4: organization in Madison, Wisconsin. So I was recruited here by
- 27:09Speaker 4: Boys and Girls Clubs. When I was a deputy Commissioner
- 27:13Speaker 4: for Parks and Recreation in the City of.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Philadelphia, amazing. So, you guys, mister Johnson has a book.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It's called The Audacity to Lead.
- 27:23Speaker 3: You can call me Michael.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Michael Bold Mindsets and nonprofit Impact, right.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Well, yeah, so the title is The Audacity to Lead,
- 27:37Speaker 3: and it's the seven Mindset Lessons on Love, Family, and
- 27:42Speaker 3: turning adversity into Impact. And the subtitle is from the
- 27:47Speaker 3: Project to the c Suite period. And really I.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Really focused the book on I talk about, you know,
- 27:54Speaker 4: all the adversity that I faced not being able to
- 27:56Speaker 4: read and write to end up graduating and getting the NBA,
- 28:00Speaker 4: to going to Cornell University, to Harvard Business School and
- 28:04Speaker 4: getting all these credentials and degrees, to becoming a millionaire
- 28:09Speaker 4: and losing that money in six months after our sue
- 28:13Speaker 4: the university that I went to, after the coaches dressed
- 28:16Speaker 4: up in kuklusklam you know outfits back in the nineteen nineties.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I talk about that, you know.
- 28:23Speaker 4: In the book, I talk about my friend BG, he
- 28:26Speaker 4: was killed, you know, right in front of the boys
- 28:28Speaker 4: and girls clubs.
- 28:29Speaker 3: But I also talk about how.
- 28:31Speaker 4: I've raised two hundred and fifty million dollars over the
- 28:34Speaker 4: last twenty five years in multiple cities. I talk about
- 28:38Speaker 4: how we raised money for Maud Avery family when he
- 28:42Speaker 4: was killed in Brunswick, Georgia. I talk about Michael Brown
- 28:45Speaker 4: and Saint Louis when the mayor and the Urban League
- 28:48Speaker 4: CEO asked us to raise money.
- 28:50Speaker 3: You know, for that family.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I talk about the money that we've raised for educational
- 28:54Speaker 4: programs up in black and brown kids graduate from high
- 28:58Speaker 4: school and go on to college. I talk about a
- 29:01Speaker 4: whole bunch of different things, you know in the book,
- 29:04Speaker 4: but I also talk about love and leaving with passion.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I talk about how I built the first statue of
- 29:10Speaker 4: a black woman and our state capitol by the name
- 29:13Speaker 4: of Veil Phillips in the United States. Before last July,
- 29:17Speaker 4: there was not one singular statue of a black woman
- 29:21Speaker 4: anywhere in America on state capitol grounds. And after the
- 29:25Speaker 4: George Floyd you know, protests, I talk about in the
- 29:28Speaker 4: book how young activists challenged my leadership and pretty much
- 29:34Speaker 4: for whatever reason.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Young black activists.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, young black activist And I'll tell you why.
- 29:39Speaker 4: I talk about it in the book, And so what
- 29:41Speaker 4: came out of that. They challenged me and said there's
- 29:45Speaker 4: no black representation at our state capitol and now there's
- 29:49Speaker 4: a million dollar statue of a woman by the name
- 29:52Speaker 4: of Veil Phillips. She was the first woman in the
- 29:55Speaker 4: country to ever be named to a national political party.
- 30:00Speaker 4: She was the first woman in the country to be
- 30:03Speaker 4: named to a statewide office, and she was the first
- 30:07Speaker 4: black woman of many different things here in Wisconsin.
- 30:11Speaker 3: So I knew.
- 30:13Speaker 4: While it took us four years to get it done,
- 30:15Speaker 4: last July, we were able to erect this statue and
- 30:19Speaker 4: then we made history in the United States.
- 30:20Speaker 3: And I talk about that in the book.
- 30:22Speaker 2: It's crazy for it to be that many first for
- 30:25Speaker 2: this black woman and does not have known her name, right,
- 30:29Speaker 2: I don't know, you know?
- 30:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Look, her name is phil R. Phillips. She was
- 30:35Speaker 4: appointed by John F. Kennedy to the Democratic National Committee
- 30:40Speaker 4: and the first of any colored woman, any woman, and
- 30:44Speaker 4: she's having to be a woman of color to be
- 30:47Speaker 4: elected to a statewide office. And she did all this
- 30:50Speaker 4: in the sixties and seventies. It was pretty amazing.
- 30:54Speaker 2: And we didn't got a movie about this woman.
- 30:55Speaker 3: It's crazy, but yes, it's all kind of documentary on her.
- 31:01Speaker 2: They're are Phillips.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So in your book you talk about the seven mindset lessons.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Can you list those for us? Because I want to
- 31:10Speaker 1: talk about.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, So in the chapter in the in I should
- 31:15Speaker 4: have sent you all a copy of the book.
- 31:16Speaker 3: So it's really I broke that down.
- 31:19Speaker 1: By you should have bought one. Sorry, you know it's.
- 31:21Speaker 4: On Amazon, it's on good Reads, and uh, I hope
- 31:24Speaker 4: you allill read it to Really it's a good a
- 31:27Speaker 4: lot of good stuff in there. So chapter one, the
- 31:30Speaker 4: first mindset is about the urgency of now and pretty
- 31:33Speaker 4: much unleashing your purpose and making the best of what
- 31:36Speaker 4: you got in your situation. Chapter two I focus on
- 31:41Speaker 4: how to expand your horizon and surrounding yourself with role
- 31:45Speaker 4: models and believing in a bigger vision in your life.
- 31:48Speaker 4: And I give examples through aversity on how I accomplished
- 31:52Speaker 4: that as a as a nonprofit leader.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Chapter three, So chapter one, power of now, right, Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 1: that is what I struggle with the you know because
- 32:04Speaker 1: tomorrow and next week are killers. Someway, I'll do it tomorrow,
- 32:09Speaker 1: I'll do it Monday, Monday and tomorrow. So how do you?
- 32:13Speaker 2: How do?
- 32:13Speaker 1: How do? What would your advice be to someone to
- 32:18Speaker 1: do it now? You know, start where you are?
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, So I would first go back to there were
- 32:24Speaker 4: people that would tell me I knew I wanted to
- 32:26Speaker 4: be a CEO, and there was people that would tell me,
- 32:29Speaker 4: because of my circumstances and because you rarely see black
- 32:33Speaker 4: people running multimillion dollar organizations that it was very slam.
- 32:38Speaker 4: So back when, I would say in my early twenties,
- 32:42Speaker 4: I was still running the streets in Chicago, and at
- 32:45Speaker 4: that time I couldn't read and write, but I knew
- 32:48Speaker 4: that I wanted to do something with my life. I
- 32:51Speaker 4: saw my friends being killed, I seen them getting life
- 32:54Speaker 4: sentences in Chicago, and I just didn't want that to
- 32:57Speaker 4: be me. So what I would say, a day is
- 33:00Speaker 4: one step at a time, right, you know, life is
- 33:03Speaker 4: a marathon. You're not going to like knock it out
- 33:06Speaker 4: the park right away, but you have to swing the
- 33:09Speaker 4: back and some days you'll hit, you'll get on first base,
- 33:13Speaker 4: some days you might strike out, some days you'll get
- 33:15Speaker 4: on second base, and some days you will hit the
- 33:17Speaker 4: goddamn Grand Slam, And but you gotta I'm sorry for Curtison,
- 33:22Speaker 4: I apologize.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Did you really listen to our show?
- 33:26Speaker 4: I actually did, I really did.
- 33:30Speaker 3: I was.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I was on a panel yesterday and I slipped up
- 33:33Speaker 4: and I was like, and I was a pastor. Was
- 33:36Speaker 4: on a panel with me and I was like, oh
- 33:37Speaker 4: my god, I'm sorry. So so I would say that
- 33:41Speaker 4: it's just all about swinging the back and whatever your goals.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I always tell, whether it's my colleagues or young people
- 33:48Speaker 4: that's around me, like what's your mission and what's your
- 33:52Speaker 4: what's your vision for your life? Right, So, if there's
- 33:54Speaker 4: somewhere that you want to be five years from now,
- 33:57Speaker 4: did you write it out? Did you map it out?
- 34:00Speaker 4: What's your intersections to get into your destination? And I
- 34:04Speaker 4: always try to do that, and I would say that
- 34:07Speaker 4: would be that would be my advice. Write out what
- 34:10Speaker 4: it is you want to accomplish and take one.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Step at a time.
- 34:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I literally wake up every morning I be chatting do
- 34:15Speaker 1: it now, Like just to get to the gym. Just
- 34:17Speaker 1: do it now? Do it now? Do it now? Because
- 34:20Speaker 1: our bullshit?
- 34:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, and we all struggle with that, right,
- 34:25Speaker 4: just speaking like the gym. You know, I was I
- 34:28Speaker 4: went for a two mile walk this morning and I
- 34:31Speaker 4: got up at five o'clock, but I actually did started
- 34:34Speaker 4: till eight and I was like, oh my gosh, she
- 34:36Speaker 4: just got out there early.
- 34:38Speaker 3: And it's just it's difficult.
- 34:41Speaker 4: But as you know, once you start and you get
- 34:43Speaker 4: to a cycle of it, you know you'll just get
- 34:46Speaker 4: You'll just get used to it. And that's the same
- 34:49Speaker 4: with careers, right you get into these roles and finance
- 34:52Speaker 4: might be something that you may not be good with,
- 34:55Speaker 4: marketing or public speaking, whatever that is. Take whatever steps
- 34:59Speaker 4: you are to craft your feel I mean, I look
- 35:02Speaker 4: at what you all are doing. I watched y'all shows,
- 35:05Speaker 4: and y'all are very entertaining, very funny. Y'all talk about
- 35:09Speaker 4: some really really good content. It kept my attention. Like
- 35:13Speaker 4: I said with you earlier, I was up to midnight
- 35:15Speaker 4: last night. I raally stay up to midnight watching anybody show.
- 35:19Speaker 4: So y'all, y'all what it take?
- 35:22Speaker 3: And it seemed like.
- 35:23Speaker 4: Y'all building up y'all base, building up y'all content. It's
- 35:26Speaker 4: pretty amazing what y'all are doing.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it takes a lot of commitment, boy, it does.
- 35:33Speaker 1: So what's one mental habit that you think could possibly
- 35:39Speaker 1: be holding back some black leaders or people who are
- 35:41Speaker 1: aspiring Because I remember when I worked also I work
- 35:46Speaker 1: a corporate job now, but before my boss asked me
- 35:51Speaker 1: like what I wanted to be? What I wanted to be?
- 35:53Speaker 1: What I wanted to do within the corporation, right, because
- 35:56Speaker 1: she said she always knew she wanted to be the boss.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I don't necessarily want to manage people, right. I'm good
- 36:03Speaker 1: at managing processes.
- 36:05Speaker 5: Right.
- 36:07Speaker 1: So what's one mindset that you think maybe hindering a
- 36:10Speaker 1: lot of you know, people who think they're the boss.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, like, if you're trying to move
- 36:19Speaker 4: up the corporate ladder, one things that I learned is
- 36:22Speaker 4: that you have to be like, if you're always the
- 36:25Speaker 4: smartest purpose person in the room, you're probably not growing.
- 36:29Speaker 4: And so I think about I told somebody the other
- 36:31Speaker 4: day when I was on this yesterday, I was on
- 36:33Speaker 4: this panel, and they said, you know, I'm on TV
- 36:37Speaker 4: a lot here in Madison, Wisconsin, and people are soon
- 36:40Speaker 4: that I only hang out with HOGH Network individuals because
- 36:43Speaker 4: of all of the resources that we raised for kids
- 36:45Speaker 4: and their families. And what I've actually told them is that,
- 36:48Speaker 4: you know, some of my friends include people with GEDs,
- 36:51Speaker 4: PhDs and everything in between, from HOGH Network individuals to
- 36:56Speaker 4: people who are still drug dealers and gang bangers. And
- 36:59Speaker 4: I learned from each one of them. And because when
- 37:02Speaker 4: I learned from them, I then can bring those two
- 37:05Speaker 4: worlds together. I say all that to say, AJ is
- 37:09Speaker 4: that you have to put yourself in different environments to grow.
- 37:13Speaker 3: And so I'll give an example.
- 37:14Speaker 4: When I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, one of the first
- 37:18Speaker 4: parties that got invited to was a farm party. And
- 37:21Speaker 4: I was like, and it was a donor and I
- 37:22Speaker 4: was like, God, I don't want to go to that shit.
- 37:26Speaker 3: A farm party. And so it's of a farm party.
- 37:32Speaker 4: So I automatically judged what I thought a farm party
- 37:35Speaker 4: is gonna be, Like there's gonna be some sheep and
- 37:37Speaker 4: cows and shotguns. And I get out there. Man, these
- 37:41Speaker 4: folks had a live band. They had those four wheelers
- 37:45Speaker 4: and I'm out there like going through the mud, and
- 37:48Speaker 4: they had they had a barbecue out there. It was
- 37:51Speaker 4: it was lit, and I was like, I was one
- 37:54Speaker 4: of the last people to leave. And so and that night,
- 38:00Speaker 4: that night, that family, well, since I've been to that event,
- 38:03Speaker 4: that family has helped me raise a million dollars, you know,
- 38:06Speaker 4: since you know, since coming here sixteen years ago, fifty
- 38:10Speaker 4: thousand here, one hundred thousand there. And so I was
- 38:13Speaker 4: just saying, you always got to just be willing to
- 38:16Speaker 4: put yourself out there and go into different environments if
- 38:19Speaker 4: you're going to grow.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Absolutely in chapter three, what were you saying? You were
- 38:25Speaker 2: giving us the seven Yeah.
- 38:28Speaker 4: So chapter three, you know, the Academy of adversity, forging
- 38:32Speaker 4: tragedy and turning pain into power.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:35Speaker 4: We all go through some sort of pain, whether it's
- 38:38Speaker 4: a sibling or a parent dying, or you're getting fired
- 38:41Speaker 4: at work or whatever it is. We all deal with
- 38:45Speaker 4: some sort of pain. And in the book, I talk
- 38:47Speaker 4: about the pain that we experience and not letting pain
- 38:52Speaker 4: and adversity set you back. In my case, you know,
- 38:56Speaker 4: I talked about this cool cluss Clan incident when I
- 38:59Speaker 4: was at a university and the coach is dressed up
- 39:02Speaker 4: in kul Klusklan outfits and and uh yeah, it's all
- 39:07Speaker 4: in the books and it made national news back in
- 39:11Speaker 4: the nineties.
- 39:12Speaker 1: You did you sign an NDA? Can you say the
- 39:14Speaker 1: school's name?
- 39:15Speaker 4: What I will say if you go to my website
- 39:19Speaker 4: the school actually invited me back thirty years later. This
- 39:23Speaker 4: happened in nineteen ninety three, And if you go to
- 39:25Speaker 4: m Johnson CEO dot com, I actually posted the video
- 39:29Speaker 4: of me at this school talking about the incident. So
- 39:34Speaker 4: at first I wouldn't have talked about it, because I
- 39:37Speaker 4: don't know what I signed when I was eighteen years old.
- 39:40Speaker 4: But since the school has talked about it, they've invited
- 39:43Speaker 4: me back. I didn't name the school in the book
- 39:46Speaker 4: because I do think eventually it did the right thing
- 39:49Speaker 4: by me. And I always told people that the coach
- 39:53Speaker 4: went to jail, the students went to jail, and I
- 39:56Speaker 4: came home with a boatload of money, and I bought
- 40:00Speaker 4: a truck, I bought some rims, I bought a bunch
- 40:03Speaker 4: of speakers, gave started a record label. I bought a restaurant.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I got into a little bit of entrepreneurship in Chicago
- 40:12Speaker 4: on the streets.
- 40:13Speaker 3: And six months later I was broke.
- 40:15Speaker 4: And yeah, and I thought about committing suicide. And because
- 40:22Speaker 4: I couldn't have believed that I went through, you know,
- 40:25Speaker 4: all that money, and I was thankful that I had
- 40:29Speaker 4: people in my in my life, including my wife, who
- 40:33Speaker 4: encouraged me to go back to school and to do
- 40:35Speaker 4: something with my life, and it ended up taking me.
- 40:37Speaker 4: I ended up going to Malcolm X's Junior College, and
- 40:41Speaker 4: Malcolm X Junior College wouldn't even accept me at their
- 40:45Speaker 4: school because.
- 40:45Speaker 3: That's where I learned.
- 40:46Speaker 4: I couldn't read and write at proficiency and then ultimately
- 40:50Speaker 4: it took me four and a half years to get
- 40:53Speaker 4: an associate's degree. So that was one example where I
- 40:56Speaker 4: talked about adversity and how I got through that pain
- 41:00Speaker 4: and how I fought through it to ultimately become one
- 41:04Speaker 4: of the most successful Boys and Girls club leaders in
- 41:06Speaker 4: the country.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Amazing. So this is a prime example of you know
- 41:11Speaker 1: a lot of black folks that are fighting for reparations
- 41:13Speaker 1: all the time. We are old a lot of reparations,
- 41:16Speaker 1: a lot of money, but without the financial literacy, we
- 41:19Speaker 1: will literally collectively give that money back to the system
- 41:24Speaker 1: within twenty four hours. So you got a million dollars.
- 41:27Speaker 1: You obviously easily attract money, okay, eighteen years old a
- 41:33Speaker 1: million dollars, but without that financial literacy, you ended up
- 41:36Speaker 1: in the same predicament.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, let me just say this.
- 41:41Speaker 4: It was a blessing because what I learned is that
- 41:45Speaker 4: I didn't earn that money, so I didn't respect it.
- 41:48Speaker 4: And that's why I went back to school and got
- 41:50Speaker 4: all my degrees in business, a master's in business and
- 41:53Speaker 4: bachelor's in business, have all these business certifications. Because what
- 41:57Speaker 4: happened when you don't understand how to do financial projections,
- 42:01Speaker 4: don't know how to understand profit.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And laws, revenue and experience.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Their financial acumen. I don't care what you do in life,
- 42:09Speaker 4: whether it's for profit, nonprofit, your own business. You gotta
- 42:14Speaker 4: have business in life. You gotta have business acumen. So
- 42:17Speaker 4: I told myself that if I ever was put in
- 42:20Speaker 4: a position again, that I would never make that mistake again.
- 42:24Speaker 3: And I never have.
- 42:26Speaker 2: So you said that your wife encourage you to go
- 42:28Speaker 2: back to school. How young were you at that time
- 42:32Speaker 2: when your wife was, like, babies, just go back to school.
- 42:35Speaker 3: So my mindset was not really at a good place. Then.
- 42:39Speaker 4: My wife was a chemist and she went to University
- 42:43Speaker 4: of Minnesota. So, and she was from the South side
- 42:47Speaker 4: of Chicago. She grew up in a household where she
- 42:51Speaker 4: had both parents. My mindset was, if I got her pregnant,
- 42:55Speaker 4: I could move in with her mom and live in
- 42:57Speaker 4: their empty basement. That was my game plan. She was
- 43:00Speaker 4: a chemist, she was doing well in school. I knew
- 43:04Speaker 4: if she a chemist coming out of college would probably
- 43:06Speaker 4: make seventy eighty thousand dollars a year. So she was
- 43:09Speaker 4: my That was that was my meal ticket, right, She
- 43:14Speaker 4: and I got I got bemboozled, right, so she was like, Nope,
- 43:18Speaker 4: that's not going to happen. And she really encouraged me
- 43:22Speaker 4: at the time I was running the streets. She was like,
- 43:25Speaker 4: I'm really not going to lay down with you until
- 43:28Speaker 4: I run your credit. She made me take a health exam,
- 43:32Speaker 4: so I did to go take an age test and
- 43:34Speaker 4: get all my blood work done, and then she ran
- 43:37Speaker 4: my She ran my credit and she told me I
- 43:39Speaker 4: couldn't buy back of potato chips on credit, and that
- 43:42Speaker 4: she couldn't really get serious with a guy unless he
- 43:46Speaker 4: was standing on business. And that's why I enrolled in
- 43:49Speaker 4: Malcolm Max. At that time, I was I was like
- 43:54Speaker 4: madly in love and was like a pet.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Yet these niggas to do and anything. Don't give up
- 44:03Speaker 1: the cookies, okay.
- 44:05Speaker 3: So I wasn't miss that opportunity. So I did what
- 44:08Speaker 3: I had to do. And uh and so I rode
- 44:11Speaker 3: my ass in school and I figured it out, and
- 44:14Speaker 3: and and and.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Thankfully I was in a position where I've been able
- 44:19Speaker 4: to earn a really good living. My wife was able
- 44:21Speaker 4: to take seven years off work and take off our kids,
- 44:24Speaker 4: and I was able to take care of her, you know,
- 44:26Speaker 4: during that time, and and we've done well for ourselves.
- 44:31Speaker 1: All Right, y'all, don't try this at home. Be careful, okay,
- 44:33Speaker 1: because not everybody. It's gonna end up like Michael. Okay.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Results may vary.
- 44:42Speaker 3: So true, so true, so true, so true.
- 44:46Speaker 2: But I think running the nigga credit is a good
- 44:48Speaker 2: idea before you sleep.
- 44:50Speaker 1: With him like that. Listen, she was.
- 44:53Speaker 4: I thought she was. I thought she was crazy. I
- 44:55Speaker 4: was like, I was like, I didn't care. I was
- 44:57Speaker 4: like I didn't really know what credit was, right, and
- 45:00Speaker 4: so I was like, run whatever you want. She was like,
- 45:02Speaker 4: I need your self security number. I don't even know
- 45:05Speaker 4: my self. Scared, I had to go to my mama,
- 45:07Speaker 4: and my mama was like, what do you need it for?
- 45:09Speaker 4: I was too embarrassed to tell my mama I was
- 45:11Speaker 4: giving it to this girl. Yeah, make you do strange things,
- 45:21Speaker 4: for sure.
- 45:23Speaker 1: No, that's amazing, man, Like we need to definitely adopt that. Yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 4: So I do talk a lot about her in this
- 45:29Speaker 4: book because just being straight up, I think I would
- 45:33Speaker 4: still be running the streets if it wasn't for her.
- 45:36Speaker 4: And uh, and she was the first woman Like where
- 45:39Speaker 4: I grew up at, people didn't go to weddings right,
- 45:41Speaker 4: like we got married in the neighborhood boys and Girls
- 45:46Speaker 4: club or uh in the neighborhood like room in our building,
- 45:50Speaker 4: or you went to city hall. You just got your
- 45:52Speaker 4: little certificate ated and that was it. So she started
- 45:55Speaker 4: taking to me like these fancy weddings where three four
- 45:59Speaker 4: hundred people in these halls. I hadn't never seen anything
- 46:02Speaker 4: like that. She started taking me to plays like I
- 46:05Speaker 4: had never been to like a she took me to
- 46:07Speaker 4: a Tyler Perry play and I was like, what is.
- 46:09Speaker 3: This Joe black? This is a picture of her. She's
- 46:18Speaker 3: a black woman.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I don't know if okay, yes, when he said she
- 46:23Speaker 2: was from the South Side, I knew she was black immediately.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that she comes from like a what is
- 46:30Speaker 1: all the South Side of Chicago? Like Ben is that now?
- 46:33Speaker 3: It's changing? Right?
- 46:34Speaker 4: You got High Park where Barack Obama, you know, live,
- 46:38Speaker 4: it's a very like affluent community. But then you got
- 46:41Speaker 4: pockets to the south side that's very, very dangerous. But
- 46:44Speaker 4: my wife grew up on like right around ninety fifth
- 46:46Speaker 4: and Halsted, and that community is also starting to shift.
- 46:51Speaker 4: But the time that she was living there, I saw
- 46:54Speaker 4: it as an upper middle class community. That's what it
- 46:57Speaker 4: felt like to me, because I'm like, man, they got
- 46:59Speaker 4: a house, they got three folk bedrooms and basement, mom
- 47:03Speaker 4: and dad working.
- 47:04Speaker 3: That's gonna be my new place of residency.
- 47:08Speaker 2: So that's like, that's what my family. That's exactly like,
- 47:10Speaker 2: that's not too far from where my family grew up.
- 47:13Speaker 2: And they were like in a home. They had a house.
- 47:15Speaker 2: It was both parents there like, but there was some
- 47:19Speaker 2: rough spots over there, like it wasn't all it is
- 47:22Speaker 2: it is.
- 47:22Speaker 4: I mean, my wife brother was killed right in front
- 47:24Speaker 4: of their house, shot right in the head. So it's challenging,
- 47:29Speaker 4: but it's not as bad as the West Side of Chicago.
- 47:31Speaker 3: And I think most Chicago wins would.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Say that, y'all, let me turn a light on right quick.
- 47:37Speaker 1: It's getting darker quick, quicker than I thought it was.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Okay, so continue with the seven you were at.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Oh so, so then we're on uh So.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Chapter four, I talk about embracing the courage and acting
- 47:53Speaker 4: and committed to a life of growth. In chapter five,
- 47:56Speaker 4: I talk about the unbreakable spirit and how great transforms
- 48:00Speaker 4: tough times until like turning points, and I give examples
- 48:05Speaker 4: of all this. And in the book I have these
- 48:08Speaker 4: reflection questions in each chapter. Right, So I didn't want
- 48:11Speaker 4: to just make this into like a biography. I wanted
- 48:15Speaker 4: it as a blueprint. So for if somebody's starting a business,
- 48:18Speaker 4: if somebody trying to take their podcasts or another podcast,
- 48:22Speaker 4: but the podcasts or whatever to the next level. They
- 48:25Speaker 4: also say, there's a business side of it, and this
- 48:28Speaker 4: is how you can scale it.
- 48:29Speaker 3: This is how you raise money, Here's how you nurture
- 48:32Speaker 3: and store it. Relationships to get people to invest in
- 48:36Speaker 3: what you're doing. And I tough about that, and then
- 48:38Speaker 3: in chapter six I talk about strategic connections.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Right, you can never do this work by yourself. Right,
- 48:44Speaker 4: So I think about, you know, Tam and aj y'all
- 48:47Speaker 4: are doing this together. But I'm pretty sure there's some
- 48:49Speaker 4: people behind the scenes that's also supporting what you all
- 48:53Speaker 4: are doing and what I've learned. It might be a spouse,
- 48:57Speaker 4: it might be who. I don't know, if somebody got
- 49:00Speaker 4: be like I don't know, if you got good. Somebody
- 49:02Speaker 4: gotta be helping y'all do something.
- 49:04Speaker 1: We be trying, we be trying to find.
- 49:07Speaker 2: We need some of that boys and Girls club money
- 49:11Speaker 2: behind this ship.
- 49:13Speaker 4: You need to come, you need to come that's what
- 49:15Speaker 4: I would say in July when I have my wife party.
- 49:19Speaker 3: I think I'm gonna bring new addition this year, and
- 49:22Speaker 3: y'all should come down.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Right, absolutely come having a nonprofit before I get there,
- 49:27Speaker 1: though again I said, I'm gonna create me a nonprofit
- 49:30Speaker 1: right before we get there, dons, okay, Or.
- 49:34Speaker 3: You can do some crowdfunding, right, y'all.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Got I've seen some of the views I got, you know,
- 49:39Speaker 4: I've seen thousands of people on y'all views, So people
- 49:43Speaker 4: are watching you all, and I just got can't be
- 49:45Speaker 4: afraid to ask and ask people to support your your content,
- 49:49Speaker 4: and y'all got good if y'all let me tell you this,
- 49:51Speaker 4: if y'all show was on some bullshit, or to call
- 49:54Speaker 4: Steve O and be like, I'm not really interested, but
- 50:00Speaker 4: y'all got a good show, and I think I got
- 50:01Speaker 4: a good thing going on, all right. And then the
- 50:04Speaker 4: last chapter is the APICs in the aftermath, building legacy
- 50:08Speaker 4: that out lives your lifetime. As I've matured into my role,
- 50:13Speaker 4: what I've learned is really without margin has no mission,
- 50:17Speaker 4: you know, and for years you see whether it's church
- 50:20Speaker 4: based organizations or smaller organizations doing these like little mini
- 50:25Speaker 4: fish fraud, dinners.
- 50:26Speaker 3: That stuff is not sustainable.
- 50:29Speaker 4: To what I've learned is to try to build endowments
- 50:32Speaker 4: and raise enough money where the interest income can sustain
- 50:36Speaker 4: the work that you're doing. So, for example, you know,
- 50:39Speaker 4: if I was to show you this building that I'm
- 50:41Speaker 4: being now, we just built this building three years ago
- 50:44Speaker 4: and we raised thirty five million dollars in sixteen months,
- 50:48Speaker 4: and it's the largest youth workforce center in the history
- 50:51Speaker 4: of Boys and Girls clubs, you know, of America. And
- 50:54Speaker 4: it's probably the best looking office, best looking nonprofit, I
- 50:58Speaker 4: would say, in the state. Remarkable what we have here.
- 51:02Speaker 4: But it was casting a vision and putting the right
- 51:05Speaker 4: team around you to be to go out and get
- 51:08Speaker 4: the resources.
- 51:08Speaker 3: That you need.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Yeah, fundraising is definitely a skill set I would love
- 51:13Speaker 1: to acquire because it's like it you have to put on,
- 51:18Speaker 1: do you not when you're meeting people.
- 51:21Speaker 4: I don't know what, but hm, I'm sorry, you'll get
- 51:25Speaker 4: used to it. Right, So I'll give you an example. Right, So,
- 51:28Speaker 4: I was in this program at Harvard Business School, and
- 51:32Speaker 4: you know, I knew I wanted to, Like, I was like,
- 51:34Speaker 4: am I really gonna learn something? I really want to
- 51:36Speaker 4: spend time in this program, and I ended up doing
- 51:38Speaker 4: it because I got the scholarship to go and I
- 51:42Speaker 4: was so inspired. There was this guy Indonesia. It was
- 51:46Speaker 4: a case study that we were learning and this Indonesia,
- 51:50Speaker 4: this doctor from Indonesia was an eye doctor, and back
- 51:54Speaker 4: then there was this epidemic of people going blind in
- 51:57Speaker 4: their country, and everybody had these little, small micro clinics
- 52:01Speaker 4: that systemically was not solving anything. This man was like,
- 52:05Speaker 4: I'm going to build like a hundred million dollar hospital.
- 52:08Speaker 3: I'm going to mortgage my home and I'm gonna figure
- 52:11Speaker 3: it out.
- 52:12Speaker 1: And he built me never use your own money.
- 52:14Speaker 4: I know I would never do that, but it was
- 52:16Speaker 4: a powerful story and it inspired me.
- 52:19Speaker 3: At that time.
- 52:19Speaker 4: I was thinking about building this facility and our goal
- 52:23Speaker 4: was a million and I went back that night and
- 52:26Speaker 4: I said, I'm taking this goal to like thirty five
- 52:28Speaker 4: million dollars, and I laid out a blueprint and we
- 52:31Speaker 4: went out and we raised it in sixteen months. And
- 52:34Speaker 4: so I say all that to say, the first call
- 52:37Speaker 4: I made was to a wealthy woman by the name
- 52:40Speaker 4: of Pleasant Rowland. I don't know if you are If
- 52:42Speaker 4: you all are familiar with American girl downs, they're really
- 52:45Speaker 4: famous all over the United States, and those dolls were
- 52:49Speaker 4: made right here in Middleton, Wisconsin.
- 52:52Speaker 3: So I found her phone number. I got it from somebody.
- 52:55Speaker 3: I reached out to her. I didn't know if she
- 52:57Speaker 3: was going to respond or not. She responded, just like
- 53:00Speaker 3: all three of us is on this call. I got
- 53:02Speaker 3: on a zoom call with her, and three days later
- 53:05Speaker 3: we had five million dollars sitting in our back. I
- 53:08Speaker 3: just simply made the acts and I sold her on
- 53:11Speaker 3: the vision, and then her husband turned around and gave
- 53:14Speaker 3: us a million three days later.
- 53:16Speaker 2: M h, I just need to know what you be saying,
- 53:20Speaker 2: because thirty five million.
- 53:23Speaker 3: And how many went sixteen months?
- 53:26Speaker 2: Sixteen months, that's impressive. I need to follow you around.
- 53:30Speaker 2: You got the gift of gas, and I think money
- 53:33Speaker 2: is attracted to you too now.
- 53:35Speaker 3: But y'all got there. Y'all got the gift of gap too.
- 53:38Speaker 3: I've watched y'all show.
- 53:40Speaker 4: There wasn't one minute that it was boring and which
- 53:44Speaker 4: made me go look at.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Other content y'all had.
- 53:47Speaker 4: So I saw all of it, all of it, and
- 53:50Speaker 4: it's really good content.
- 53:52Speaker 3: So you got the gift the gap.
- 53:54Speaker 4: It's how you take your craft and continue to show
- 54:00Speaker 4: up in it, right, So I talked about all these
- 54:02Speaker 4: different programs I've been in at Harvard Business School, at
- 54:05Speaker 4: Cornell University, at the Center of Philanthropy.
- 54:08Speaker 3: It might just be if philanthropy is.
- 54:10Speaker 4: A route you want to go to help raise money
- 54:13Speaker 4: for your platform, you might have to take your platform
- 54:16Speaker 4: for being a for profit entity to a nonprofit entity
- 54:19Speaker 4: and making it more educational base.
- 54:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Then you can apply for grants, Then you can create
- 54:25Speaker 4: a board, then you can ask people to make donations
- 54:28Speaker 4: and they can get a touch right off for that,
- 54:30Speaker 4: And so it could be done. And plus, both of
- 54:34Speaker 4: y'all got a great small y'all got a great smell.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Y'all. It's just a matter of selling your vision.
- 54:41Speaker 4: Y'all could be the next whoever, right, the next opera,
- 54:45Speaker 4: the next billionaires.
- 54:47Speaker 3: It all starts somewhere.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I definitely I wanted to speak to you because
- 54:51Speaker 1: I do have an idea for a nonprofit and I
- 54:54Speaker 1: don't know where to start. And I think it's a
- 54:56Speaker 1: great idea and I need help just a little bit,
- 55:00Speaker 1: if I can borrow a little bit of your time.
- 55:02Speaker 1: But what what is some of the things that maybe
- 55:05Speaker 1: the public misunderstands about nonprofit leaderships, like somebody in your position, CEO,
- 55:10Speaker 1: because I see a lot of articles online about people's salary.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Ye think yourself. I don't believe in the poll poper shit.
- 55:18Speaker 1: You know, I said, I feel like you could be
- 55:19Speaker 1: paid well for whatever it is you do if I
- 55:22Speaker 1: was a church girly, like I want my church to
- 55:24Speaker 1: be rich. You know what I'm saying, Like it's I.
- 55:27Speaker 3: Look at it. You know, you get what you pay for.
- 55:30Speaker 4: You want to pay somebody thirty thousand dollars, You're gonna
- 55:32Speaker 4: get thirty thousand dollars worth of work. But I've always
- 55:35Speaker 4: shared with my board, I don't set my salary.
- 55:37Speaker 3: We have one hundred.
- 55:38Speaker 4: We have thirty eight board members and seventy something people
- 55:42Speaker 4: in our committees, So in reality, I have one hundred
- 55:44Speaker 4: plus bosses. And what I've asked my board is to
- 55:48Speaker 4: pay me with my white counterparts. Make pay me no more,
- 55:51Speaker 4: pay me no less, and let my performance speak for self. Now,
- 55:55Speaker 4: you're right, there are people who criticize CEOs for their salaries.
- 56:00Speaker 4: But I make no different than what other CEOs make.
- 56:03Speaker 1: And I'll also scause you black. Right, that's the problem.
- 56:07Speaker 3: Now, you know what?
- 56:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think sometimes people see black leaders in these roles,
- 56:11Speaker 4: and people criticize you, right, especially when you are a vocal, verbal,
- 56:16Speaker 4: intelligent CEO that stand on his or her business.
- 56:21Speaker 3: People will always attack you. And that's okay.
- 56:24Speaker 4: But like when people look up my salary or look
- 56:27Speaker 4: up my charity, my audience are clean. Every year we
- 56:31Speaker 4: are four star Charity Navigator rating, which only about twenty
- 56:35Speaker 4: percent of nonprofits in the country, you.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Know, get that.
- 56:38Speaker 4: And every year our balance, our balance sheet gets stronger.
- 56:42Speaker 4: When I started at Boys and Girls Clubs, we had
- 56:44Speaker 4: eighteen employees. I now have close to two hundred. When
- 56:48Speaker 4: I started, we only had about a million dollars in
- 56:50Speaker 4: the bank. Now we have close to thirty million dollars
- 56:53Speaker 4: in their assets. And so people can criticize it, but
- 56:57Speaker 4: the results beak for self. There's not another program graduate
- 57:00Speaker 4: more black and brown kids in this state than I am.
- 57:03Speaker 4: I have eleven hundred kids that's in college right now
- 57:06Speaker 4: in twenty five cities across the United States. My Wisconsin
- 57:11Speaker 4: is the largest racial achievement gap in the country. Ninety
- 57:15Speaker 4: nine percent of my kids that graduate from high.
- 57:17Speaker 3: School and they're going on lunch.
- 57:18Speaker 4: Okay, So people could talk all that crap they want,
- 57:23Speaker 4: but the results is where.
- 57:24Speaker 2: It counts absolutely, aj he said, I don't I make
- 57:28Speaker 2: the same thing as every other CEO. All I heard
- 57:31Speaker 2: was bullyed.
- 57:34Speaker 1: For real because the Goodwill good I think the CEO
- 57:37Speaker 1: of Goodwill they make like half a million dollars, over
- 57:40Speaker 1: a half a million dollars six hundred and some thousand
- 57:42Speaker 1: dollars a year.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Yeah, some of some of those guys are running eighty
- 57:45Speaker 4: ninety million dollar budgets, no different than our corporate counterparts. Right,
- 57:50Speaker 4: So if you have a nonprofit that's running an eighty
- 57:54Speaker 4: ninety million dollar organization, and there's some CEOs that run
- 57:59Speaker 4: companies that have twenty million dollars, they do twenty million
- 58:02Speaker 4: in revenue, and their CEOs make a million dollars and
- 58:05Speaker 4: so or more. And so how I look at it
- 58:08Speaker 4: is this is how I share this with my board.
- 58:13Speaker 4: When I think about pay equity, is not just about
- 58:15Speaker 4: the CEOs, about your entire team.
- 58:17Speaker 3: In my organization, we give our employees sabbaticals.
- 58:21Speaker 4: So our employees, you work five years from us, we
- 58:24Speaker 4: will pay you to take four months off and you
- 58:26Speaker 4: can go anywhere you want, and we're still gonna pay
- 58:28Speaker 4: you so you can have time to be with your
- 58:30Speaker 4: family and your friends. We're gonna also pay you, not
- 58:34Speaker 4: based on what nonprofit leaders make locally. We bench mark
- 58:39Speaker 4: our salaries across all non profits across the country to
- 58:42Speaker 4: make sure that our people are paid here well. When
- 58:45Speaker 4: people leave me with my vicevate eleven vice presidents, when
- 58:49Speaker 4: they leave me, most of them go on the universities.
- 58:52Speaker 4: Some of them are foundation presidents now, some of them
- 58:55Speaker 4: run their own businesses. One was a vice chance of
- 58:58Speaker 4: a university. And I can go on and on and on,
- 59:01Speaker 4: And it's not about just the CEO. It's about taking
- 59:05Speaker 4: care of all your people because in this space there's
- 59:09Speaker 4: so much turnover in management and the direct care staf
- 59:13Speaker 4: positions that families need to see consistent leadership in the
- 59:19Speaker 4: lives of the families that they serve.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. So, I know you mentioned love. You talk about
- 59:27Speaker 1: loving your book, right, Yeah, So damn the hell was
- 59:33Speaker 1: my question? Sorry? How do you balance? How do you
- 59:38Speaker 1: balance being a CEO and your family, being a husband,
- 59:41Speaker 1: all those good things?
- 59:43Speaker 2: Father?
- 59:43Speaker 1: You said you have kids, Yeah, yeah, and what has
- 59:46Speaker 1: it taught you? Like, what has it taught you about
- 59:48Speaker 1: like love and patience?
- 59:50Speaker 4: So I've always on the first say I had my
- 59:53Speaker 4: before I agreed to do y'all show. I had my son,
- 59:56Speaker 4: who's a hip hop artist and he's becoming fairly famous,
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: and I said, look at the page to let me know,
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: and his exact words were.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: That they dope as shit. You should go home. And
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: that was his exact words.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: And he's a junior in college at the University of
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: Cincinnati and it goes by MK E three X and
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: he just did a music video in Atlanta with the
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: Concrete Boys, who is part of I think Young Gotti
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: or one of them. Right, So what I've learned is
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: that people I hear some people say there's never balanced
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: when you're a CEO, and that's bullshit, Like you can
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: work all your life and make good money, but if
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: you're alone and unhealthy, it means nothing. Because when your
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: life is over where you can't take your house, you
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: can't take your cars, and you can't take your money
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: to wherever you're going after life. Right, So early on
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: I did not get that I would come to word
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: and I watched. I remember when my son was born,
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: I didn't know if I was going to be to
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: afford to take care of him, but I didn't want
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: to be a deadbeat dad like my dad, and so
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: I committed to working as hard as I could to
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: try to work for my work hard for my family.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Now I make sure that my team. I don't call
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: my team members on weekends. I don't call them at nighttime.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: And when I do, if I send them a text,
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: I schedule it for six or seven o'clock in the morning,
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: so I'm not bothering or taking them away from their family.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: I also schedule date weekends and nights with my wife
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: without the kids, so we are doing stuff together so
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: as we get older, we don't lose interest in each
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: other because there's a lot of temptation that's out here,
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: and people marriages fall apart, you know all the time.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: And when people know your salary.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: People come at you right.
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: And so what I've tried to do is I always
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: honor my wife at an read time I can at
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: different events. I tried my best to honor her, you know,
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: in this book. Because what we've built, we built it together.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: I didn't do it by myself. I built it with
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: a queen that stood not behind me, but side by
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: side with me. As we've given back our time and
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: our talent and our treasure back to our community.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Yeah, hear that, get you a wife.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I was just about to say I was just about
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: to say that, because you know, in the black community,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: people really think you can build legacy and generational wealth
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: by yourself. Doesn't work like that.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: In the book aj I talk about I actually talk
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: about that, right, And there's a there's research that show
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: married couples make fourteen percent more in the network than
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: those who are not married. Right, and you think about it, right,
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: you know, at one point, like, let's think about it.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: If it's two of you all, and y'all are splitting
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: all the.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Bills, and if you're liven beneath or at your means,
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: that means you should be in a position to put
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: away thirty or forty percent of your income if y'all
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: both are working towards the same goals. Right, some couples
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: will be together for twelve, thirteen, fourteen years. Somebody's ranting
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: eighteen hundred. Somebody else rant it's twenty five hundred. When
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: y'all could be living together and sharing those bills and
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: reinvesting that money and making nine ten percent every year.
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: Then over the decade, look up, damn, I saved one
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: hundred and fifty two hundred three hundred four hundred five
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: hundred thousand dollars. And if people got to learn you
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: can't go at this by yourself, that's my advice.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: But you also got to have the right partner too, right.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: I've seen on both sides.
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: I've seen some of my male friends be hurt by women,
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: and I've seen a lot of family members and females
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: that are in my life be hurt by men. So
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: you got to find the right person that you are
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: equally yoked with to get ahead.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Absolutely on the internet, there is value for men in marriage. Okay,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: just to sum it up for the niggas who think
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: they gonna get that m by theyself. Mama's women literally
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: come with a loaf of bread. Just our presence might
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: bring the bag for you.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and men are genuinely healthier too when they're married. Right,
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: It's and there's all kinds of research out there that
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: backs that, that backs that up. And I know sometimes
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: you know especially, I mean both it's men and women. Right, people,
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: we live in a society where people are not disciplined,
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: and we're not disciplined, and you get in trouble.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: And so I've learned it I don't put.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Myself in situations that will cause any to jeopardize my
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: marriage or my relationship with my family.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: I definitely don't want to lose my kids.
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: I don't want to lose my family, and I also
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: don't want to damage my reputation by trying to have
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: thirty five forty minutes of pleasure.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Do you have like other men that are also like married,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: you know, business owners, because I think that also kind
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: of helps keep men in line, right, instead of you
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: hanging out with all your single homeboys. You know, you're
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: you have a group of men who are on the
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: same page.
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: Family men, Yeah, you are your circle, right.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: There are friends in mine who do different things who
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: are single, whether it's going out of the country or
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: going to different types.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Of clubs broads.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I cannot go to those types of things with
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: them as a married man, and so it's like, hey,
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: if you want to meet me, you got to meet
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: me at a Chicago Bulls game or a Bucks game
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: or I don't want to put myself in that environment.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: So I do typically try to hang with married men.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: But there's also some married men and married women who
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: ain't really married, they just married. They playing games you
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: know where those people are having a couple of conversations
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: with them, so I try not to. You know, again,
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: I'm a very imperfect person. Marriage is not easy. Me
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: and my wife been married twenty three years and we've
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: had our and flows and it's.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Just it is what it is. But you gotta work.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: You gotta continue to work at it.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: So we want to do like a little quick, little
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: rapid fire. Uh real quick questions.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: Okay, y'all didn't give me no heads up on the questions.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm scared, man.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: I literally just know. We never give anybody like outline
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: or heads up. You know, we kind of got our
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: little talking points. But yeah, I said.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Just remind them that I'm the CEO of Boys and.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: Girls clubs, so uh so, just just keep that in mind.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: But these are these are very SIMP story for me
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and ship like that. Now, let CEO or not. We
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: still need a SIMP story at the end of the episode,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: So CEO or no, Yeah, we need that. We need
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: know these are regular Yeah, these are a regular question.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just I'm just messing with y'all. An.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: I don't have a problem answering. I'm an open book
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: probably answer any question.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: All right, So audacity or faith? Which one of these
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: things get hard?
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: No wins?
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, audacity or faith? Which one wins when things
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: get hard?
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: And there you go, Fai faith, I would just say that,
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: you know, I am a man of faith. I believe
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: in God and when when times get tough, I'm not
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: super religious, but I know when you covered and when
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: you've gone through things that I've been that I've been through,
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: I know the only reason I'm standing here today is
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: because there's a God.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: So I would say it faith absolutely.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: And Tam got dropped off a second. She'll be back.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: She's like he talked to damn much.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I don't know. This is a great interview, all right.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: So leading or following? Which is harder to do? Well?
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: I would say, in order to lead, you have to
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: learn to follow, and once you're a leader, sometimes you
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: still have to follow. Because good leadership is about pointing
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: to other people and allowing other people to lead. So
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: good leaders have to be good followers even when they're
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: in a leadership.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Okay, next question, what's one leadership lesson you learn the
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: hard way?
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: When I was on this panel yesterday, I gave an
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: example when you start a new organization or you're in
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: a new job and you're a new leader, you always
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: should do a swallow analysis and really listen the going
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: there telling people easy your dreams, this is what you're
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: gonna change, you're gonna change, because if you going there
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: guns blazing, you might come out as a casualty and
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: get buried before you even start. And so I always
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: tell people if you're leading a new department, if you're
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: a new leader, go in meet with all your stakeholders,
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Meet with uh, the the employees, meet with your clients.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: Understand what the issues are. If there's a person that
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: you replace, call that person and learn as much as
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: you can and just seek understanding instead of being understood.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: You ain't answer the question. You ain't answer the question,
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: then no, that makes sense. One leadership lesson. You learned
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: the hard way.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: So what happened some water analysis, which is your strength
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: and opportunities and threat?
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: So I didn't finish it, So I answered the halfway
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: by saying right, So see AJ she fell asleep on me?
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: I did not.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I just didn't hear.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: I didn't hear where they. I didn't hear where that
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: happened there, Like where was you at?
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Like you didn't to tell the story.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: So the incident, I would say, when I started here
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: sixteen years ago. My boys and girls clubs, all the
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: country clubs for kids. They're bright, they're clean, they're beautiful.
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: But when I.
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: First got here, one of our clubs is really dark.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: It was gloomy.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: And when I got here, I said, throw everything out,
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: throw out everything, and I really pissed off a lot
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: of people, and about a thirty staff quit on me
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: because I was making too many changes too fast. I
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: also learned that being a large black male, and I
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: give this example. Yesday I was on this panel, there
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: was a woman who worked for me, and I thought
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: she was really fragile. Every time I would be on
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: the phone, I would come out of my office and
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: she would be crying. I'm like, why the hell are
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: you crying? And she was like, every time you raised
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: your voice, it's just.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Charing. I'm just caring.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: So I went to HR and I was like, get
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: her out of here. So I got to thinking, I said,
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: why is my voice triggering her? So I sat down
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: with her was I wanted to seek understanding. And what
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: I didn't realize is that she was in a domestic
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: violent violence relationship for over a decade, and her husband
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: resembled me, and from what how does she described was
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: just as loud as me. And so I grew up
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: in a household where everybody just scream and we're loud.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: We're just loud individuals. So what I've learned is that
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: I had to temper my enthusiasm or when I got elevated,
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: I now go in my car and I screamed at people.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: I don't do it. I don't do it in my
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: office anymore.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Good stuff, Okay, so filling the blank. Real leadership is.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Karen given and giving back to those who are around you.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Good answer, all right, number five? We only got a
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: couple more. So you can.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: See you sweat all I'm gonna take you.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: You ain't gotta tell that people what number on next?
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Number five?
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: If your younger self walked into a room right now,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: what would you tell him?
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: There was years that I used to be a car thief,
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: and those years were very, very challenging in many ways.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: And I wish early on in my life I would
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: have turned that switch before I met this woman of mine,
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: And I wish I would have found some mentors around
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: me that would have intervened earlier, because I feel like
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: I got to later start in life because of some
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: of the things I was doing back when I was
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: in my late teens and early twenties.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: What's your personal definition of success today?
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: I would say, I would say it's threefold.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna say one, my family first and foremost, and
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: really measuring how healthy my family is and how we
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: acting and support one another. So I would say that's
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: one target of mind. Then I would say, on the
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: business side, my work at Boys and Girls clubs in
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: terms of the resources that we raise, are we really
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: impacting young people lives? Are they graduating from high school?
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Are they going on to college? Are they graduating and
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: becoming medical doctors and lawyers? And are we seeing it
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: and are we tracking it? And that's the other thing.
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: And then I would say, now that I've just turned fifty,
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: it's health related, right, you know. Every year I go
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: to the Mayo Clinic, which is the number one, I think,
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: the number one hospital in the country, and I go
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: and get executive physicals done to make sure that you know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: I'm checking all my my blood levels and making sure
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: that I'm okay as you do this work, because when
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: you raise money for challenge communities, there's a lot of
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: challenges that come with tax that come with the jealousy
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: that come with the envy that comes with it, and
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: you got to be prepared and ready all the time.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Are you Are you insured? I mean yes? Do they
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: ensure you?
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I know, people who make CEOs usually, like the companies
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: usually have insurance on them.
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: Everybody should get insurance, Like it's I've had I've probably
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: had insurance on me for fifteen years.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: So you know, I'm saying the corporation has insurance on you.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: Oh yeah, they like, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Why you're going to get that blood work done.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: Let me my board doesn't require but it's something you know,
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: they don't require it all at all.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Okay, that's what I was asking.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: Yeah, no company can require you like it's because of
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: hippo laws. You don't have to share your health status
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: with anybody. Now a board could say, we encourage you
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: to deal it. In my case, you know, fifty was
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: a milestone for me, and you know, turning fifty there's
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: a lot of people who just at least fro where
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: I come from are either fifty and there's all kind
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: of health issues or they didn't make it to fifty.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: And so the last few years, I'm working to be
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: a healthier, healthier person. And you can only do that
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: by knowing your status, right, knowing you know what your
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: A one C is, what your cholesterol is, and all
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: those things, because they take a lot of us out.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I just had a physical done on Friday. Man,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: y'all will get y'all a physical. Yeah, I'm run here thinking,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: I just love to eat crushed ice, super amic, super anemic.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: I always know people like I was showing some people
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: like I got this my chart thing from the male clinic,
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: and I was showing a group of people like all
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: of my results right, and they were like, man, you
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: share yourself. I don't mind sharing it because people should know,
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: like what all their levels are, right, you know. And
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: a lot of us die with this pancreatic cancer or
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: like it's it's just so much stuff that can be
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: treated early if you catch it. And so and I
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: gotta think my wife, right, there was parents in my
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: and I married us. I ain't going to know a doctor.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: And she's like, oh, it's been two years. You ain't
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: got your fist. Oh I go next year? She was like, nope,
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: you're going now. So part of it, I would say,
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: being married to a good woman, she would make you go.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: I am, I am really.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Honored, appreciate, and honestly, if you ever need my help
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: and you need me.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: To jump on the I need it right now. I
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: need your help and I have a friend who needs
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: your help. One of my girlfriends was recently the CEO
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: of a nonprofit here in Charleston, South Carolina, and the
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: board was giving her a super super tough time, first
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: black woman, young, she's only forty as well, she just
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: turned forty in December, and you know, they just didn't
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: treat her well. So she ended up stepping down recently.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: But I know she's good at raising money. I've been
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: to it, so like, yeah, I would also like, you know,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: maybe this is another reason why she needs I would
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: like for you to possibly talk to her. Also, yeah, of.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: Course say no more than.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Yeah, AJ feeling your schedule up?
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: Ain't she tell you relationships is worth more than money? Okay? Okaya?
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: Life is an open book, and I went through something
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: like that. I ran a very large nonprofit and I
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: went there for four months and my departure was very,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: very very public and U and so and I was
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: a black CEO of two different nonprofits, first black CEO
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: of two and it just didn't work because I am
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: the type of CEO that I cannot be a figurehead
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: and I will not be a figurehead. And if you
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: hire me as the CEO, you got to know if
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: I interview for a job, I'm going to be straight
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: up with you, right, I am an entrepreneurial CEO, and
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: if you hire me in that role, you need to
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: allow me and empower me to be in that role.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: But you got to find somebody else. And it's that symbol.
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: And I've always operated like that. And so when you
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: ask the question around audacity of faith, my faith have
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: always allowed me to step out there on courage and
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: know that your skills are strong enough that if somebody
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: mistreat you, you're laying on your feet in the next
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: opportunity to present itself.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Period.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Am all right? Final question? Complete this sentence. In twenty
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: twenty five, the world needs more leaders who blank.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: Show empathy and compassion. You know, I think about what's
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: going on with the SNAP program. I made a post
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: about it on my LinkedIn profile that I think has
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: now gone viral, and you like, there's people out here
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: that have no empathy. And as somebody who benefited you
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: know from Snap, a mother who was single, they had
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: schizophrenia and mental health issues. There are people who are
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: dependent on those resources. And I just see a lack
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: of empathy and a lack of compassion from so many
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: people in this country right now. And we need leaders
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: who's going to be bridge builders and show empathy and compassion.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, none of that, that's for sure, and they
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: need to go ahead and give them Snap benefits right
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: on back.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: Messed around, really Snap, but they I.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Think they got they got it. They got it November first.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: But I guess there's going to be any trumpset.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: Trump a couple of hours ago said it's not happening.
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: Yesterday they announced that they were going to get half
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: half of the funds out, and then today he circled
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: it back and say, ain't nothing going down until the
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: Democrats come.
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: And pass his budget. Wow, you know, in cases like
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: this and.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: What all I got to see what all that budget includes,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: because a lot of times they have a whole bunch
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: of bullshit. The small print people aren't reading that's included
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: in these bills and budgets, right, which is probably why
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: they won't pass it.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: I mean, people have agendas, and people want to reallocate
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: funds to things that's important to them. And the reality
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: is we are a very divided country. The president won
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: with a little over half the vote, and his base
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: is probably saying, why why cater to that other half
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: when they're not going to vote for you anyway. And
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: so I think it's going to be a challenging next
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: few years for a lot of a lot of people people,
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: and that's why we need leaders who are empathetic and
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: compassion and are willing to step up and do things
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: outside of the box. And you know, normally, like over
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: the holidays, you'll see every year I usually go out
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: and buy somebody a car and raise money for that.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: We've a couple of years ago, you'll see news stories
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: where we help purchase a half a million dollar house
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: for our maintenance guy. We go around town and we
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: give away two three four thousand dollars in tips to
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: restaurant workers. And it's not necessarily just giving out.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: It ain't my money. I just raise it. On social media.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: People are compassionate and they're empathetic and they want to help.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: So a half a million dollar home for how do
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: I apply for the janitorial position right now? Because I
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: clean that motherfucker from top to bottom.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: Okay, let me tell you this story about this guy,
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: and I talk about it in the book.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: And if you go to m Johnson's CEO dot.
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: Com on my website, right on the homepage, you will
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: see a video about this Gentleman's name is Dwayne Malone.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: When I came to Boys and Girls Club sixteen years ago,
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: we had no money for maintenance, and Dwayne was like, man,
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: I believe in what you're trying to do, and he said,
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: I'm going to help you get these buildings together. So
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: he came in one Christmas and we painted one of
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: our boys and girls to meet him in like three
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: volunteers from Christmas Eve all the way to like.
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: New Year's Day.
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: And every year he's been with me doing something. When Flint,
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: Michigan happened, Flint Michigan gave me a key to the city.
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: All I really did.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: Was showed up.
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: I told Dwayne I wanted to take fifty thousand gallons
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: of water down there, and we had two days to
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: do it. I posted it on my Facebook page and
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: within two days he collected fifty thousand gallons of water
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: and we took it down to Flint, Michigan. I really
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: just used my profile and my influence to get the
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: word out. But he did all the major labor. And
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: I recognized that the same thing happened when there was
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: tornadoes and floods in Houston. We rescued people out of
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: their houses. I went down there with firefighters and newspeople,
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: and it was Dwayne who drove that semi trailer you know,
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: down there full of supplies. So in Wisconsin we have
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: the largest racial gap in home ownership. And he was
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: trying to buy him and his new wife a house
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: that was like an hour and a half outside of Wisconsin.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: And he was actually smart. He told me that's what
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: he was trying to do. So he was making his
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: ask without making his acts, and I was like, man,
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: I got to take care of my guy. Now what
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: came of that?
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: If you read the comments like in that set, people
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: are like, oh my god, how can he do this?
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: Why would he buy this? For as baking this guy
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: and as other people. Sometimes you got to take care
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: of people on your team too. And I'm thankful because
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: here's a guy who is giving his time and his
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: talent to our organizationation for years and all I simply
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: did us ask dollars to give ten thousand here, twenty
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: thousand there, thirty thousand there to buy him his dream house.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: Yeah that wasn't He was the steward of the Lord
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: and the Lord, so I fit the blessing.
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: With a home.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: That's all that was.
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Yeah, they leave it bags for something real important. Get
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: on a hacksing for twenty dollars. You need five hundred
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: thousand dollars. Listen, don't nothing piss me off? Then the
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: person asking for twenty dollars, because what you about to
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: do with that? Like, right, I ask anybody even anything.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: I really can't afford it a big ass.
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: We are going to ask break now. When we get back,
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: you gotta give us your SIMP story. Okay, so just
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: be prepared, think about it while we're on this break.
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: And you gotta re you gotta re educate me on
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: the SIMPS story.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: We're gonna we're gonna help you, all right. We're not
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: really taking a break. We just put a break in there,
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: But Simp serious.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: I got y'all making money.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: It's a couple of little dollars.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: We ain't gonna go oh money.
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but we're trying to get some of that.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: I do, got it. It's just in the universe around.
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: And just remember old me when y'all started your foundation,
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: and I'll come. I'll come work for y'all when y'all
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: making them millions.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Okay, we're gonna hold you today, don't hold you to that.
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: I'll come. I'll come work for y'all any day.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: Okay, all right, now we're gonna be looking for you.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: I'm about to come work at the Boys and Girls
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Club because I'm trying to get these student loans paid off.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: And y'all know if you work for a nonprofit, you
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: can get your student loans forgiving.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: I think already looked up my salary, so.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: I think, no, I am, I know finance right, I'm money.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Look your ship up.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Me wanted to get my city loans written off. Don't
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: got nothing to do with your salary. I'm trying to
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: get you to pay the government depend.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: All right, So Simp, sim story you have to tell
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: a story about the time you got played by the Office.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: Of sex Ooh peez.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Now he's been with his wife for twenty three years now,
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: be real curlful, right.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: Think about that one. I don't think I've ever been played.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Oh you're one of those.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: You're a virgo. What's your birth Whe're your birthday? He
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a libra libra?
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: You a libra like play like she's on just played.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Somebody finessed you out of some money. Somebody made you
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: think that they really liked you, and you call them
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: with your homeboy in a locker room or something.
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: I swear to God, and that's never happened to me.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: Because somebody said, I guess you could put it in
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: a in a donor way. I don't know how somebody
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: ever promised you some money and didn't come through with
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: the donation.
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: I mean I could say I was played by my
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: wife early on. She's dating I talk about it, but
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: she dated this prince looking as us dude, and uh
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: I actually talked about in the book and we were dating.
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: I didn't want to get serious, and she was like, well,
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: I'm gonna go back and see my ex boyfriend and
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: like bring some closure to that the weekend. I wanted
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: to get serious and when she left Chicago, her her
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: hair was all whipped up, and she came back three
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: days later and it looked like a hot mess.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: And I just knew you wanted to get serious. Now
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: she is Arbitrarily, she.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: Went back and slept with her ex man.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: That was the weekend you wanted to be serious.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: See how Nick, you know how you know how it is?
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: She was.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: We both were like we dated for ten years before
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: we got married, and I was in the music business.
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: It was just hard to settle. It was just very difficult,
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: and I didn't want to lie to her until I knew.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: And that took me seeing her with another guy. I
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: think what happened when I was daying o.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: That hair fucked though, Like.
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: That did hurt me. I was all week she was
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: in she was in Minnesota. She was in Minnesota. I
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: was listening to the Osley Brothers all week I was.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: I was.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: I was in a little feetal position, and you know
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: how it is when your woman is with another man,
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: All kind of stuff go through your head. And I
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: was brave enough to talk about it in the book
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: and so h but she was honest with me. She said,
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: I need closure, and so I'm gonna go and talk
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: to him, and I knew they woul talk, and I
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: was like, I was like, I could drive to Minnesota
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: with you.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: Right, because why y'all can't talk on the phone. Y'all
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: had then, though, but I knew.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: She was with that guy for a while, and I
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: don't know what, you know, It still bothers me to
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: this day.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: I told y'all, if you cheat on your man and
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: he take you back, leave that nigga immediately.
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: She can't to Minnesota. Ever.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: Ever, some years ago, you know, women, I feel like women,
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: at least the women I've dated, like some men don't
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: get emotionally tired and and easy to move on.
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: And I would say, at least for the women I dated,
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: it's just not that easy.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: And so my wife in this case was like a stud.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: She was just like, look, you know, while while we
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: were going back and forth, she was like, you know what,
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: if you go do your thing, you do your thing,
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: and I'm gonna live my life and I ain't gonna
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: wait on you, and.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: We can do it.
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: And when I got serious she uh, you know, I
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: was like, we gotta now commit if we're gonna do this,
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: and she said, well, I need one more weekend, And uh, rightfully?
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: So right like her? I like her.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: I like her a lot. She was like, I ran
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: your credit your credit wasn't she? And I'm about to
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: go see Malcolm because you playing Malcolm in the middle.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: In the middle, that was a good that was a
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: good story, all.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: Right, tell so I gotta tell her all over again?
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: Did you record that?
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: No?
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: We recorded recorded?
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: What?
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: Wait a minute, what why would we have stopped?
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: Oh that break? Ben over buddy, we.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Canial oh my god before we wrap it up. So
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: for our listeners, Uh, because a lot of people are creatives,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: entrepreneurs every day, people just trying to lead, you know,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: and whatever laying they're in. So what's the one bold
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: step they can take this week to start leading with audacity.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Self reflection, introspective work it.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta like you can't pour it into your
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: future until you realize what's.
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: Going on with you right now in the moment.
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: And uh, And so I try to self reflect a lot,
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: like even to this day at fifty.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: I don't feel accomplished.
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: And some people look at my house and my car
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: and my big office and all the stuff we do,
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: and I still don't feel accomplished. And the reason I
- 1:32:02Speaker 4: think that's the case is because I shared it with you.
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: The variety of people that I hang with, right, I
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: have some friends who are multi millionaires and billionaires, and
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: I have some friends who are still living lives that's
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: not as productive. And I learned from all of them.
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: But I don't feel as successful as I know I
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: could be, or as impactful as I believe I can be.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: So you are a yacht like a big So I
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: would say the yachts in the boats ain't my thing?
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: Like I would say materialist, Well, the island maybe more property.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: I would say, I'm not real big into material things,
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: but I do think about I am starting to think
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: about how do I put back into my family. All
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: my family still live in poverty in Chicago. Ninety five
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: percent of my family is either still on Section eight
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: living in poverty. And how do I help build wealth
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: for not only my family, but the people around me,
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: including the families that we serve. And that's why in
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: this workforce center, we built this this financial literacy program,
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: we built this entrepreneurship center. We want to teach kids,
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: you know, how to become doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs. One of
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: my kids just graduated from med school and now she's
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: delivering babies.
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: And when she.
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: Finished her residency, Chang chain And this was somebody that
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: was just in our program nine years ago. I didn't
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: know what she wanted to do with her life. And
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: that's where her name is, doctor Mattiba Bojang. I'm very
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: proud of her, young black woman, and I just can't
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: believe she graduated month and a half ago and she's
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: already delivered over forty some babies at our local hospital.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Wow, that's amazing powerful. Do you have any survivor's remorse?
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: I don't know what do you mean by that?
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: Because who made it out the hood? And oh yeah,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: still back there.
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: You know, I'm thankful man, because growing up there, I
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: feel like I can handle anything. Like I've lived in
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: the gutter, I've seen the worst, and even though my
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: neighborhood was very challenging, there was a lot of love
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: that too. In the buildings I grew up in. You
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: can go borrow chicking off somebody table, You can borrow
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: sugar kool aid. I don't know another neighborhood when you
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: go and knock on somebody door and say can I
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: borrow some butter and it was just that's how it
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: was in our neighborhood. And even though there was a
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: lot of drugs and prostitution and gain banging, there was
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: a sense of community there. So I'm proud, and I
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: think because I lived in that environment, I've been able
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: to in my new and well in my role at
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: Boys and Girls clubs. Because I have those lived experiences,
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: it's made me a better CEO.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: And it also keeps like there's this guy named Jackie
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: Morris that dress like a pimp, and everybody will be like,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: why why do you hang out with him?
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: And you see him. He wears his big dab hats,
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: he wears big shiny, glittery shoes, like he does look
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: like a pimp. But I love Jackie so like, I
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: have a fundraiser on Friday night, Jackie's gonna be at
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: my table with one of the biggest philanthropists in my community.
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: And I'm not embarrassed to hang out with Jackie because
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: Jackie keeps me grounded and when there's stuff going on
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: in the streets, he tells me, and so I keep
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: him close to me. And some people be like, I
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: just don't know why you do that, And when you.
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: Sometimes when people move up, they forget where they come from,
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: they forget who like.
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: It's not you.
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: Sometimes you got to reach back. Jackie got out of prison.
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: Jackie came and worked with me on the project. Jackie
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: got out of prison eight years ago. He's been working
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: every day and I helped him through a donor out
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: of Chicago, guy named Willie Wilson, help him purchase at
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: shop in downtown Madison. The same thing with my boy Goon.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: His nickname was Goon's name now is Corey. He runs
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: the Black Man Coalition a Dane County. Spent ten years
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: in the hole. Now he's a nonprofit leader that's also
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: raising millions. Corey introduced me to a donor that I
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: couldn't get to and she recently gave us a million dollars.
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: So I poured it to Corey and now Corey is
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: pouring back into me. And I just feel I just
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: believe when you give back to other people, God to
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: bless your work and give back to you.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: Absolutely, Thank God. Yeah, So, how can people support your
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: mission or get involved with what you got going on next?
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: I would encourage people. You know that My biggest thing
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: coming up now I'll go to www dot bgc DC
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: dot org. That's the Boys and Girls Clubs at Dane
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: County website. If you want to learn a bit more
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: about my book is m Johnson CEO dot com. We
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: fund raised on Friday where we're raising money for our
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: Youth of the Year event on Friday where there's a
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: competition some young person as an opportunity to win a
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: car to get a college scholarship. And it's a very
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: big competition that we have here in Wisconsin. But my
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: biggest one that's coming up is what we do over
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: the holidays. I want to raise it about two hundred
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: thousand dollars to refurbish somebody house, to give tips to
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: restaurant workers, to help buy a car, to a family
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: that's in need, and if you want to get down
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: and you want to see it in real time, we
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: raise the money and then we bless families in real time.
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: We're not one of these organizations where we raise the money.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: So we're gonna sit on there for a year and
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: decide people submit their applications. I don't make any of
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: the decisions anymore because what comes with that when people
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: say you raising that kind of money, Oh, you giving
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: them money to his family, all his friends. So what
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: I've did sometimes you got to listen to criticism and
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: get out in front of it. So over the last
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: seven years, I have a community group of business and
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: civic and gracial community leaders that look at all these
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: applications and then they tell me who to go get
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: the money to.
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: And that's how we roll.
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: All right, y'all. So that is b G C DC
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: dot or go pay y'all ties, okay.
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: Ministry sometimes outside the walls of the church, right, So.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Yes, podcast is the ministry.
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: The broadcast the ministry too. You're sharing the word.
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: And in the marketplace, you know, here in the marketplace,
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: and uh and you having a little bit of fun
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: with it.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Too, right, Thank you so much for joining us. This
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: is really really good what AJ said. I found this
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: amazing CEO from the Boys and Girls Club. I was like, girl,
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: he about to be born as hell. But you thought.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: You thought you was disconnected because you were sleeping.
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: But I hope it says, I hope we stay in touch.
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: I hope y'all come down the third. If y'all come
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: down in July, I would let y'all interview all the celebrities.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: It's usually about seven to eight of them that we had,
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: like a couple. I think we had Tate Diggs and
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: I mean website.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: He's gonna come set up shop.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: Let's let's let y'all do y'all thing, all right, Gret,
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: absolutely all right.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: We look forward to it.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: And then a j let me know. I'll agree to
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: have free consultant services for you and your nonprofit friend,
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: but if it goes beyond those two people, I might
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: to charge you about five hundred dollar an hour.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: Ra I'm coming to ship.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Listen. I don't mind paying for information. I give out
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: a lot of free information all the time, and I
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: usually have had to pay for the information and I'm
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: then given for free. So I don't mind, you know,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: investing in myself. But anyway, y'all, I'm not gonna charge you.
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: But here's what I will say. I see about the book.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: I respect definitely about the book. I am the blueprint
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: is there.
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: Go to Amazon dot com and get it. Michael Johnson,
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: I see the reading to pop right up and uh.
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: And here's what I would say. If the book ain't good,
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: I will fully refund you, because I know everybody I
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: talk to they tell me they can't once they started
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: one chapter, they can't stop. And it's real, it's authentic,
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: it's raw. You really see a leadership book that talk
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: about the adversities and a leader that's raising the type
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: of resources I've raised in my career that comes from
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: the projects, and it's really told. And so I know
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: it's a phenomenal book and I believe it's gonna be
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: a best seller. But I gotta get on podcasts like
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: like y'all's to help us, help help us get the
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: word out.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: I'm definitely because I feel like the subtitle could be
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: real Nigga ceo.
- 1:40:49Speaker 5: You know, iur paaraphrase.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: I am an authentic CEO from the streets.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: I have never left my ties as I've grown in
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: my role, I just haven't. And there's there's not one
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: place I feel There's no place in America I feel
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: like I can't go, whether it's in the projects.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: Or in corporate America.
- 1:41:24Speaker 4: I'm comfortable in all those spaces because I've been in
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: all those spaces and so but at the same time,
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: I've always tried to be my my authentic self. I
- 1:41:35Speaker 4: was on this panel yesterday, I was telling people, don't
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: fake it when you When you fake it in your job,
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: that's acting and when you're acting, eventually the acting is
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: going to wear off.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: Now, somebody asked me, do you co switch?
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: I used to, but now like I used to have
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: a stuttering problem, so I worked on that.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: If there's things you know you need to be better at,
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: you work at it. But don't be fake, don't be phony.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: Be you.
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: And just like I'm talking to you all like you
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: talk to my guy Goon who runs the Black Men Collers.
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: We played pokers with our donors. We play basketball.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: We won't say that.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: You see what they're doing with the basketball players right now.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: They played poker, peanut play gamboo.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: We played for pizza and push ups, that's what That's
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: what we played for.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I had another pion there.
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: Oh my god, all right, that's what we got. That
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: was hilarious. A single man that's in my life. They
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: would have loved that.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: All right, y'all. The audacity to lead with Michael Johnson.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: We do appreciate you for coming and we talked.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: Back touch ladies, appreciate You'll stay right.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: There, y'all if you enjoyed this episode. Y'all tune and
