- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Ryan Mohammed, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare. And I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:07today Heather Trout, director of women and children
- 0:10services at North Bay Health.
- 0:12Heather, welcome to the podcast. We're very excited
- 0:15to have you join us today.
- 0:16To get us started, I want to discuss
- 0:18how North Bay Medical Center has earned the
- 0:20high performing rating,
- 0:22in US News and World Reports, best hospital
- 0:25for, maternity maternity care for the 4th consecutive
- 0:28year, which is absolutely amazing.
- 0:31What does this recognition mean for your team
- 0:33and the families you serve?
- 0:35Thank you, Mariah. Yes. This was another huge
- 0:38honor.
- 0:39Like you mentioned, it was the 4th year
- 0:41of receiving this,
- 0:43and it and it truly just validates
- 0:46that the quality is the core of everything
- 0:48that we do here at North Bay Health,
- 0:51not only just in maternity care services, but
- 0:54every department within our organization
- 0:57and also validates,
- 0:58our patient centered care model. So, you know,
- 1:01putting the patient in the center
- 1:03of everything we do. So it was,
- 1:06a great honor to receive that again.
- 1:09Yeah. Definitely. I can obviously see how quality,
- 1:14comes first with the patients,
- 1:16having won this for the 4th year in
- 1:18a row. Can you walk us through the
- 1:20key factors
- 1:22US News
- 1:23uses to evaluate the distinction,
- 1:26and how North Bay consistently meets these,
- 1:29these levels of criteria?
- 1:31Absolutely, Mariah. So US News,
- 1:34and World Report, they evaluate
- 1:36the hospitals in a variety of,
- 1:39different areas. And there's 8 8 specific items
- 1:42that they look at.
- 1:44One being,
- 1:45our c section rates,
- 1:47newborn complication
- 1:48rates because those kinda go hand in hand
- 1:51with your if you have a really low
- 1:53c section rate,
- 1:54you need to look at what are your
- 1:56newborn complication rates. So those go side by
- 1:59side. They also look at our breast milk
- 2:01feeding rates,
- 2:03early elective
- 2:04delivery rates. So are we inducing patients,
- 2:07without medical reasons before 39 weeks?
- 2:12Routine vaginal births after c sections also referred
- 2:15to as VBACS or TOLACS.
- 2:18So this refers to,
- 2:20if patients have had a a c section
- 2:23before
- 2:24and then would like to do a trial
- 2:26of labor to have a vaginal birth, what
- 2:28is our rate on that? Do we even
- 2:30offer that? Because a lot of hospitals,
- 2:32do not even offer that.
- 2:34They also look at our episiotomy
- 2:36rates,
- 2:37in adherence to our birthing friendly criteria.
- 2:41And, also, the, most important, I believe, is
- 2:45tracking and reporting of outcomes
- 2:47across different racial and ethnic groups, making sure
- 2:50that
- 2:51equity
- 2:52is,
- 2:53is delivered in in all different races and
- 2:56nationalities.
- 2:57So those are the 8 different items that
- 2:59they evaluate.
- 3:00You you asked about how how are we
- 3:03doing compared to other hospitals. Well, pretty fantastic.
- 3:07If,
- 3:08I I can say,
- 3:09since this is our 4th, recognition,
- 3:12our c section rates are 22%
- 3:15lower
- 3:16than, hospitals that do not meet this criteria.
- 3:20Our newborn complication rate is 44%
- 3:23lower than other hospitals.
- 3:25Breastfeeding rate is 12%
- 3:27higher
- 3:28than comparable hospitals.
- 3:31Our vaginal,
- 3:33routine vaginal birth after c section,
- 3:36like I mentioned, we have been offering this
- 3:38service,
- 3:39for a very long time, and many patients
- 3:41are seeking out hospitals that do offer this.
- 3:44So this is a huge
- 3:46drive for patients to come to our facility.
- 3:49Episiotomy
- 3:49rates are 33%
- 3:51lower than, comparative
- 3:53hospitals. We are baby friendly.
- 3:56One of not everybody is baby friendly. We're
- 3:59the only ones in Solano County.
- 4:01And then we're 13%
- 4:03more likely to report our outcomes on
- 4:06different racial and ethnic groups, looking at all
- 4:09those different categories
- 4:11and dividing it up into the different racial
- 4:13groups. So
- 4:14yes.
- 4:16Wow. Yeah. That is a lot of criteria
- 4:18for good reason, of course.
- 4:20And and like you said, I think that
- 4:21makes it even more impressive with getting this
- 4:24high rating for sure.
- 4:26Going, into the family's decision for just a
- 4:29sec, why do you think it's important for
- 4:31families to look for a hospital with a,
- 4:34US News high,
- 4:36performing rating
- 4:37when planning for childbirth?
- 4:40Yeah. Thank you, Mara. You know, our families
- 4:42are,
- 4:43very,
- 4:44proactive
- 4:45and really redoing their research and homework. And
- 4:48this distinction in maternity care for uncomplicated
- 4:52pregnancies
- 4:53really helps,
- 4:54our expectant families make those informed decisions
- 4:57about where to seek care, and it reflects
- 5:00on our commitment,
- 5:01like we've mentioned to provide a safe,
- 5:04compassionate, and quality experience throughout the birth process.
- 5:08I often get phone calls
- 5:10during to
- 5:11arrange a tour or to ask questions
- 5:14and really, you know, asking those informed decisions
- 5:17about, you know, what are our rates and
- 5:19all that kind of stuff. And it's it's
- 5:21available
- 5:22on the Internet for everybody. So to be
- 5:25able to,
- 5:26speak so highly of those, it's it's really
- 5:29important that our patients are able to make
- 5:31that informed decision.
- 5:33Yeah. Absolutely.
- 5:35For clarification,
- 5:37what does the baby friendly designation signify,
- 5:40and what does it say about the care
- 5:41you provide to mothers and the babies?
- 5:44Absolutely. So North Bay Health, we were originally
- 5:48designated
- 5:49in 2014,
- 5:51by the
- 5:52baby friendly USA
- 5:54for our, baby friendly status.
- 5:57They evaluate
- 5:5981 different items when they come out for
- 6:02an evaluation.
- 6:03And
- 6:04this this honor,
- 6:06affirms that North Face Health adherence to the
- 6:09highest standards of care for breastfeeding moms and
- 6:12their babies, and it's based on the 10
- 6:14steps to successful breastfeeding,
- 6:16which is an evidence based practice recommended by
- 6:20the World Health Organization
- 6:22and the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF.
- 6:25So it's many different criterias. It's not just
- 6:28about
- 6:29breastfeeding,
- 6:30but really just
- 6:32giving our patients the the best care,
- 6:35helping them with whatever feeding method they want,
- 6:39but just meeting the rigorous criteria.
- 6:42So redesignation
- 6:43is every 5 years. So we were redesignated
- 6:45in 2019,
- 6:46and we just completed our redesignation,
- 6:50in September
- 6:51of 2024.
- 6:52So
- 6:53very excited and very proud to continue this,
- 6:57quality practice.
- 6:59Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I'm sure. And, you know,
- 7:0181 points is outstanding.
- 7:05As the only baby friendly hospital in, Solano
- 7:08County, I hope I'm pronouncing that right.
- 7:11What unique advantages does North Bay offer to
- 7:14breastfeeding mothers and their newborns?
- 7:17Yes. Thank you, Mariah. So,
- 7:19you know, it means many things. Like I
- 7:21mentioned,
- 7:22providing mothers and babies in our community with
- 7:24access to exceptional breastfeeding support while they're in
- 7:24the hospital. And when they go exceptional
- 7:27breastfeeding support while they're in the
- 7:29hospital and when they go home.
- 7:30And like I mentioned earlier, it's not just
- 7:33all about,
- 7:34breastfeeding.
- 7:35Having your child at North Bay means that
- 7:38you can stay with your healthy baby 24
- 7:40hours a day. We encourage skin to skin
- 7:43contact immediately after birth. Whether you've had a
- 7:46vaginal delivery or a delivery a c section,
- 7:50we provide that same level of care with
- 7:53that baby
- 7:54immediately going skin to skin to help create
- 7:57that bonding. We also have 5 certified lactation
- 8:00consultants
- 8:01available to provide personalized 1 on 1 sessions.
- 8:04We have outpatient support groups and consultations
- 8:08available
- 8:09once mothers and their babies leave. So carrying
- 8:12on that, you know, it's one thing to
- 8:14get started in the hospital and really establish,
- 8:16but when you go home, that's a that's
- 8:18a different story and having that available support.
- 8:21And our lactation consultants
- 8:23receive phone calls
- 8:25daily
- 8:26from patients
- 8:28and other organizations
- 8:29because there's there's like I said, they they
- 8:32don't have all the same support that North
- 8:34Bay does. So it's it's a very well,
- 8:38deserved and needed,
- 8:40service.
- 8:41Yeah. It definitely,
- 8:43definitely sounds like it, and I'm glad to
- 8:45hear all the care that is shown to
- 8:47the mother,
- 8:48and, obviously, the child, of course.
- 8:50Going back to quality, which, we touched on
- 8:53a bit earlier, how does North Bay's commitment
- 8:56to high standards and maternity care reflect in
- 8:58its broader mission of providing accessible,
- 9:02high quality,
- 9:03and compassionate care to patients throughout the North
- 9:06Bay region?
- 9:08Yeah. You're absolutely right, Mariah. So North Bay
- 9:10Health's vision is to be the trusted health
- 9:13care partner of choice for the communities we
- 9:16serve.
- 9:17So
- 9:18showing and having these recognitions,
- 9:20there like I said mentioned earlier, it's just
- 9:23complete
- 9:24validation
- 9:25that,
- 9:26we are addressing the critical
- 9:28maternity care needs,
- 9:29identifying,
- 9:31you know, where where we need the quality,
- 9:34which is in everything we do. I also
- 9:37wanted to mention that we are the only
- 9:39level 3 NICU
- 9:41in Solano County as well. So if you
- 9:43have a baby that, you know, maybe preterm
- 9:47or just may need some help in the
- 9:49NICU
- 9:50and your facility that you're delivering at doesn't
- 9:52offer that, mom and baby could be separated.
- 9:55And that's not anything that any,
- 9:59parents anticipate. So those are very, crucial things
- 10:03to think about as well, when making a
- 10:05decision.
- 10:06Even though you don't don't anticipate that, we
- 10:08want a healthy baby and a healthy mom,
- 10:11sometimes we need that extra service. So that,
- 10:14again, provides so our patients don't have to
- 10:17travel to Sacramento or San Francisco.
- 10:20They can be right here in Solano County
- 10:22getting the highest level of care for themselves
- 10:25and their baby.
- 10:26In fact, our we have a woman's hope,
- 10:29philanthropy group
- 10:31that just,
- 10:32donated
- 10:34fetal
- 10:35monitors
- 10:36to our new clinics, our clinics that we're
- 10:39opening up in Vacaville
- 10:40so that we can really just keep those
- 10:43patients as close to home as possible.
- 10:46So really living out that, mission and vision
- 10:50of North Bay Health.
- 10:52Yeah. Thank you so much for giving us
- 10:53that insight.
- 10:55Heather, before I let you go, last thing
- 10:57I wanted to touch on with you.
- 10:59Across the industry, many hospitals are closing
- 11:02or cutting back on their maternity services, which
- 11:05is obviously heartbreaking,
- 11:07for me, and I'm sure many other women
- 11:09to see.
- 11:11How is North Bay continuing to invest
- 11:14in maternity care and provide services and support
- 11:17to the babies and their families?
- 11:20Absolutely.
- 11:21So all of these recognitions that we've received,
- 11:25over the past years
- 11:27is because we are supported by the leadership
- 11:30here at North Bay Health.
- 11:32They recognize
- 11:34that it is crucial that our services
- 11:37are here. We have,
- 11:395 partnerships with 5 clinics,
- 11:43that are that do their that we support,
- 11:45and then they also have we do their
- 11:48deliveries here at North Bay. So really creating
- 11:51that,
- 11:53accessibility
- 11:54for our patients. Many of our patients
- 11:56come by bus,
- 11:58walk here.
- 11:59We are in a central location so that
- 12:01we can really serve,
- 12:03our patients. There is no question that we
- 12:07are only going to expand and get bigger.
- 12:10Never one thought or discussion about
- 12:13do we need these services because it's
- 12:15absolutely
- 12:17very clear to, senior leadership,
- 12:19to our CEO Mark Bail, that
- 12:23we need to do this. This is important,
- 12:25and we're here to stay as well as
- 12:26our NICU.
- 12:28I'm very proud of that.
- 12:30Yeah. Definitely. As you should be. Thank you
- 12:32so much for those final thoughts, Heather. This
- 12:34has definitely been
- 12:35a very, very informative discussion. So, again, I
- 12:37wanna thank you so much for coming on
- 12:39Backus Health Care,
- 12:40and I look forward to connecting with you
- 12:42again soon.
- 12:43That's awesome. Thank you so much. Have a
- 12:45great day. You too.
