- 0:00Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on sports
- 0:02Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen one hundred. Let me check this. Right now,
- 0:05Speaker 1: at exactly four o'clock, the temperature in the Greater Austin
- 0:11Speaker 1: area is a robust forty four degrees and that's the
- 0:16Speaker 1: high Right now, we've hit the high point. It's going
- 0:19Speaker 1: to fall off a little during the next hour, and
- 0:22Speaker 1: then tonight overnight it's going to get eh mid thirties.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's still not going to be freezing, it'll be it'll
- 0:33Speaker 1: be in the mid thirties. So anyway, it's it's certainly
- 0:37Speaker 1: not nearly as but it could be raining tomorrow. The
- 0:40Speaker 1: fact there's a real good chance there will be some
- 0:42Speaker 1: rain tomorrow on the earth. It's just like cold drizzle
- 0:46Speaker 1: here in the Greater Austin, Central Texas area and the
- 0:48Speaker 1: Dallas Forward Metroplex where the Goodyear Cotton Bowl will be
- 0:52Speaker 1: contested on Friday night, things could get a whole lot
- 0:56Speaker 1: more inclement over the next twenty four to forty eight hours.
- 1:00Speaker 1: For example, in Fort Worth, right now, it's partly sunny,
- 1:04Speaker 1: they're forty one, but they could see a mix tomorrow
- 1:08Speaker 1: of snow, sleet and freezing rain, and then Friday it
- 1:12Speaker 1: looks like snow for sure, about an eighty percent chance
- 1:15Speaker 1: of snow, so that could all happen up in the
- 1:17Speaker 1: metroplex as well. Meanwhile, Long warn basketball team will get
- 1:21Speaker 1: ready for number one Tennessee coming in to Moody Center
- 1:24Speaker 1: on Saturday. I say number one. They will fall for
- 1:26Speaker 1: number one because they lost by thirty to Florida last night.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Stunning lost their first loss of the season. But it's
- 1:33Speaker 1: one of those nights and all teams have them where
- 1:36Speaker 1: you have nights where you just can't or don't shoot
- 1:41Speaker 1: the basketball very well. Rick Barnes, of course, four sixteen
- 1:46Speaker 1: years the coach of the Texas Long Orange, used to
- 1:48Speaker 1: say good shooting can make up for a multitude of sins,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and they had a multitude of sins last night, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: they didn't have the good shooting. And the Long Oarns
- 1:59Speaker 1: didn't have good shooting for a lot of the game.
- 2:01Speaker 1: They got better down the stretch when they made their
- 2:04Speaker 1: big push. Texas was down twenty one to second rank
- 2:08Speaker 1: to Auburn. Last night, they were down sixty one to
- 2:10Speaker 1: forty with twelve minutes plus remaining in the game and
- 2:15Speaker 1: went on a big run. I think outscored the thirty
- 2:18Speaker 1: eight twenty two and managed forty one to twenty two,
- 2:21Speaker 1: managed to pull them within three twice in the final minute,
- 2:25Speaker 1: couldn't finish it, however, despite a career high thirty four
- 2:30Speaker 1: points from Arthur Coloma and then also Jordan Pope was
- 2:34Speaker 1: seventeen second half points. Those were big moments there, and
- 2:37Speaker 1: they got some stops and played better and hit some shots,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but could not overcome Auburn's hugely and they wind up losing.
- 2:43Speaker 1: After the game, Eddie Orn and I visited about these
- 2:46Speaker 1: factors with long Worn's head coach Roddy Terry. I say
- 2:51Speaker 1: this up from because I know how you feel about this.
- 2:53Speaker 1: We live in the world of no moral victories. Having
- 2:55Speaker 1: said all of that, the fight, the resiliency, the toughness
- 2:58Speaker 1: your team showed from down twenty one to cut it
- 3:01Speaker 1: to three twice in the final minute of the ball game,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you had to be pleased with that.
- 3:05Speaker 2: No, you don't, you know, echo your same thing you
- 3:07Speaker 2: just said. I said that to our team with Texas.
- 3:09Speaker 3: We don't. We don't.
- 3:10Speaker 2: We don't celebrate a more satisfied with more victories. We
- 3:14Speaker 2: expect to win every game that we we line up
- 3:16Speaker 2: and play, lace them up to play. That's a really
- 3:18Speaker 2: good team over there. You know, Bus has a really
- 3:20Speaker 2: good team. They're finding four caliber team. I thought that
- 3:22Speaker 2: guy showed a lot of fight. I thought they kept competing.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think again, you know, early in our journey here
- 3:27Speaker 2: in Comforts Play, our guys are learning what it takes
- 3:29Speaker 2: to play for forty minutes and when it's gonna take
- 3:31Speaker 2: the win it in this.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Conference, what was the biggest thing you noticed in the
- 3:36Speaker 1: final twelve minutes that turned it to where your team
- 3:39Speaker 1: gave itself a chance by the fight they showed.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Well, we said we had to try to sit down
- 3:43Speaker 2: and get some stops, and if we were able to
- 3:44Speaker 2: put some stops together, we could come down and find
- 3:47Speaker 2: a way to score and get what we needed to
- 3:49Speaker 2: get done on the other end. You know, and it's
- 3:50Speaker 2: a long game and that's what our guys are finding
- 3:53Speaker 2: out again in the two games we played, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: both of the games have come down to possession games.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You know, they extended the game over him. We got
- 4:00Speaker 2: more points at toward the end, but really, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: seven minutes to go, it's anybody's game, you know, just
- 4:05Speaker 2: learning to work the game. You know, we have four
- 4:08Speaker 2: new starters, both of those teams have older players that
- 4:11Speaker 2: know how to close out game and win games. That's
- 4:13Speaker 2: that's the growth curve for our team. But I love
- 4:16Speaker 2: that effort. I loved are still want to and trying
- 4:19Speaker 2: to get it done and we're gonna find a way.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and two of those guys that have had that
- 4:23Speaker 1: that want to. Jordan gives you seventeen and the second
- 4:25Speaker 1: half an heart what a ball game, a career game
- 4:27Speaker 1: for him with the thirty four.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, we did a much better job of taking care
- 4:30Speaker 2: of the basketball in the second half. We had nine
- 4:32Speaker 2: turnovers and a half. That was one thing that was
- 4:34Speaker 2: really hurting us. And you know, the points in the
- 4:36Speaker 2: paint early, they made some threes early. They're a really
- 4:39Speaker 2: good shooting team, probably the best shooting team we played
- 4:41Speaker 2: all year. And again that's a team that could go
- 4:44Speaker 2: to the Final four. And I think we have a
- 4:46Speaker 2: really good team. I think we're just going through a
- 4:48Speaker 2: little growth curve in terms of understanding what it takes
- 4:51Speaker 2: to win this league.
- 4:52Speaker 3: For forty minutes, Ronny, A lot of positive takeout of
- 4:55Speaker 3: this game, but you got tough on them coming in here, Saraday,
- 4:57Speaker 3: not a lot of time to get ready. But another
- 4:59Speaker 3: team coming here. But I think it's you know, these
- 5:01Speaker 3: guys will build off of this one.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Again, the number one team in the country coming in
- 5:05Speaker 2: Coach Barnes. You know, his team's always physical. You know
- 5:10Speaker 2: they play with the tough defensive mindset.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:13Speaker 2: But we'll regroup, we'll be ready to play and ready
- 5:17Speaker 2: to compete at high level.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I have two mad basketball teams in
- 5:20Speaker 1: here on Saturday.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I mean, I mean it's not easy to
- 5:23Speaker 2: win in this league. Then this league's hard.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Now, there's nothing.
- 5:25Speaker 2: We got the best league in the country. And you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: again every night, you got to come play at at
- 5:29Speaker 2: a high level. You don't have to play perfect, but
- 5:31Speaker 2: you've got to play at a high level, and you've
- 5:33Speaker 2: got to play with a lot of urgency and you've
- 5:35Speaker 2: got to be extremely tough and competitive to get it done.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you think about that in this league on a
- 5:41Speaker 1: regular basis. Not only did Tennessee lose to Florida at
- 5:46Speaker 1: Florida and lost by thirty, Kentucky, which had beaten Florida
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the weekend in Lexington, went down to Georgia and
- 5:57Speaker 1: lost by thirteen to Georgia. Now, maybe, well, I started
- 6:02Speaker 1: saying maybe the most impressive win. Listen, if you beat
- 6:05Speaker 1: the number one team in the country about thirty points,
- 6:07Speaker 1: it's probably the most impressive win of the night. And incidentally,
- 6:13Speaker 1: that was the third largest blowout loss for a number
- 6:22Speaker 1: one ranked team ever. There was one Saint John's lost
- 6:26Speaker 1: to Kentucky, I believe in nineteen fifty three, I think
- 6:30Speaker 1: it was or fifty two, lost by like forty one points.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And in nineteen sixty eight, the Houston Cougars were number
- 6:40Speaker 1: one in the country and lost the number two UCLA
- 6:44Speaker 1: by thirty two points. They lost one hundred and one
- 6:46Speaker 1: to sixty nine. The circumstances around that that was the
- 6:49Speaker 1: year they had the Game of the Century game between
- 6:52Speaker 1: what was then number one UCLA and number two Houston.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They played it in the Astrodome, and that was the
- 7:01Speaker 1: man who became known as Kareem Abdul to barter people.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Leu al Cinder back then was the center for UCLA
- 7:07Speaker 1: and Elvin Hayes was the center for Houston and they
- 7:12Speaker 1: matched up in the Astrodome and it was on national TV,
- 7:15Speaker 1: and it was a big moment for college basketball. And
- 7:19Speaker 1: if you've ever seen pictures of this, this was in
- 7:22Speaker 1: the days when they didn't know how to properly configure
- 7:29Speaker 1: domed stadiums for basketball. For example, you know it'll be
- 7:35Speaker 1: in the Alamo Dome this year, and of course they
- 7:38Speaker 1: do it different the way they raised the level of states,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but they bring in the temporary stands on the sides
- 7:43Speaker 1: to make it much more like a basketball arena. Not
- 7:46Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty eight in the Astrodome, they just laid
- 7:49Speaker 1: a basketball floor out right in the middle of the
- 7:52Speaker 1: dome and there was a press row, I think, on
- 7:55Speaker 1: either side, and that was it. Anybody that had a
- 7:58Speaker 1: seat to that game sat in the rear like football
- 8:00Speaker 1: or baseball seats. So it's like this just laid out
- 8:04Speaker 1: in the middle of the floor and everybody was way
- 8:05Speaker 1: back from the floor and no big jumbo trot either. Yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 1: to see it. And Houston won that game by two
- 8:12Speaker 1: of her UCLA seventy one sixty nine. And also, to
- 8:16Speaker 1: be fair and accurate, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, back then known
- 8:19Speaker 1: as leu Au Center, had had a scratch cornea and
- 8:23Speaker 1: still wasn't quite one hundred percent. But Houston won that game.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But they met up again in the final four in
- 8:29Speaker 1: the semifinals and UCLA destroyed him in the rematch, beat
- 8:32Speaker 1: them one hundred and one and sixty nine, and then
- 8:34Speaker 1: the UCLA beat North Carolina to win the national championship
- 8:37Speaker 1: that year. They beat them by twenty three in the final.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That's often been called the greatest of all those. John
- 8:43Speaker 1: Wooden coached UCLA seven consecutive national championship teams. The best
- 8:48Speaker 1: of them all lou Eu Center's junior year nineteen sixty eight,
- 8:52Speaker 1: with what else they had their unbeaten and a national
- 8:57Speaker 1: champion in nineteen sixty eight. So any time a number
- 9:01Speaker 1: one team loses by a large margin, it's noteworthy, and
- 9:06Speaker 1: Tennessee's thirty point loss at Florida last night was noteworthy,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and that it was the third largest blowout loss by
- 9:12Speaker 1: a number one team in college basketball history since the
- 9:16Speaker 1: rankings system went into play. However, the Georgia win at
- 9:24Speaker 1: home over Kentucky was impressive and maybe just as impressive
- 9:29Speaker 1: certainly as the Georgia game, and maybe right up there,
- 9:33Speaker 1: not quite to the level of Florida's thirty point win
- 9:36Speaker 1: over Tennessee, but worthy of being mentioned is Mississippi State
- 9:40Speaker 1: winning on the road at Vanderbilt, which had gotten off
- 9:42Speaker 1: to a great start, but Mississippi State went in there
- 9:45Speaker 1: and got out to a huge lead and then eased
- 9:47Speaker 1: in for the win. So Chris Chian's team is I
- 9:51Speaker 1: think fourteen and one now, so they're either fourteen to
- 9:57Speaker 1: one or fifteen to one, so they're off to a
- 9:59Speaker 1: great start. Art Texas does play Mississippi State one time
- 10:03Speaker 1: is the next to last game fourteen and one, fourteen
- 10:06Speaker 1: and one. They played them next to last game of
- 10:09Speaker 1: the regular season in Starkville at the Hump Humphrey Coliseum,
- 10:14Speaker 1: so something to take note of.
- 10:16Speaker 4: A quick note on the Auburn game last night, Craig
- 10:19Speaker 4: Texas actually moved up four spots in the kimpon rankings
- 10:22Speaker 4: after last night. Yeah, it reminded me a lot of
- 10:25Speaker 4: last year's lost to Houston at home at Moody Top ten,
- 10:29Speaker 4: top five. Houston team came in on Big Monday. Texas
- 10:33Speaker 4: played them really well. Now I think they actually led
- 10:36Speaker 4: in that game against Houston, whereas against Auburn mostly trailing
- 10:38Speaker 4: but ended up losing by you know, less than single digits.
- 10:41Speaker 4: So as artist said, and this team is learning what
- 10:44Speaker 4: it's going to take the you know, contend and sec play.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And for Texas fans who are just you know, reacting
- 10:50Speaker 4: off of these first two games in conference play. Hey,
- 10:53Speaker 4: the front of this schedule is insane. I mean, the
- 10:55Speaker 4: first five games Texas plays an SEC play against top
- 10:58Speaker 4: twenty five teams. Auburn, on the other hand, only plays
- 11:00Speaker 4: it only has to play one top twenty five team,
- 11:01Speaker 4: Misissippi State. So you know, wait until March before you
- 11:07Speaker 4: decide what to make of this text.
- 11:09Speaker 1: It's certainly late.
- 11:09Speaker 4: They're still they're still you know, they're still figuring out
- 11:12Speaker 4: their offense in the chemistry right and no Kenda Weaver
- 11:15Speaker 4: yesterday and the second half of the SEC schedule was
- 11:18Speaker 4: a little bit easier than the first half. So as
- 11:20Speaker 4: this team can you know, grow together and stick through
- 11:23Speaker 4: it against this tough opening slate, I think it's going
- 11:26Speaker 4: to help them the second half of conference play season,
- 11:28Speaker 4: you know, maybe make a run, get back off the bubble,
- 11:31Speaker 4: do some damage in the SEC tournament and who knows
- 11:33Speaker 4: what can happen.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And as is the case with football, as was the
- 11:37Speaker 1: case with football, there will be some cannibalizing. Yes, that
- 11:41Speaker 1: happens in the SEC. Teams will be knocking one another
- 11:44Speaker 1: off left and right, So we'll see. And in this
- 11:49Speaker 1: unique round robin schedule, so to speak. It kind of
- 11:52Speaker 1: reminds me of the old Big twelve schedule that Texas
- 11:54Speaker 1: uses to play, but that was even more uniform, almost
- 11:57Speaker 1: called scheduling North and Scheduling, even though they were not
- 12:01Speaker 1: in separate divisions, but they would only play the teams
- 12:05Speaker 1: from the geographic scheduling North like one time one time
- 12:09Speaker 1: against Kansas, one time against k State, one time against Nebraska,
- 12:12Speaker 1: one time against Missouri, one time against Colorado. They would
- 12:16Speaker 1: they would play in one time against Iowa State when
- 12:18Speaker 1: those teams were all in the league.
- 12:20Speaker 4: I mean Joel Nari's latest bracketology Oklahoma seven seed, Ole
- 12:25Speaker 4: miss An eight seed. Those are two teams that can
- 12:27Speaker 4: be Sweet sixteen bound, easily lead eight bound. It's just
- 12:30Speaker 4: you mentioned the cannibal the cannibalization of this conference. There's
- 12:34Speaker 4: going to be some messy seed teams that are going
- 12:36Speaker 4: to be a high low seed, but they're going to
- 12:39Speaker 4: I think they're going to be a popular pick to
- 12:41Speaker 4: go deep because they have that tough resume. They've played
- 12:43Speaker 4: the tougher teams.
- 12:44Speaker 1: True, and even though the NCAA didn't announce they're not
- 12:48Speaker 1: using the Ken Pom rankings anymore. As an evaluative tool.
- 12:52Speaker 1: It's still a good measuring stick to do that, as
- 12:55Speaker 1: well as looking at the net rankings. All right, we
- 12:58Speaker 1: shift from men's basketball the women's basketball. The number five
- 13:01Speaker 1: team in the country, the Texas Longhorns, Tomorrow night host
- 13:04Speaker 1: number eighteen Alabama. The two teams are both fifteen and
- 13:07Speaker 1: one going into the game. Remember Texas beat Alabama in
- 13:11Speaker 1: the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year Moody Center.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Christy Curry brings another really talented group into Moody Center
- 13:17Speaker 1: tomorrow night. We'll hear more from Vic Schaffer coming up
- 13:19Speaker 1: here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
