- 0:09Tonight on Meet Your Double feature, a free spirited rebel
- 0:13fights to restore water to a post apocalyptic earth in Tank
- 0:18Girl. Then a hard nosed detective
- 0:21fights to bring down a colorful gang of criminals in Dick Tracy.
- 0:27He's a stylish superhero double feature, and it starts right
- 0:31now. Hello and welcome to Meet Your
- 0:40Double Feature, a double-blind movie review podcast.
- 0:43My name is Thomas, joined as always by my brother Frank.
- 0:46Frank, how are you? Oh.
- 0:48I'm excited we're back. Season finale we never left.
- 0:51Finale we're still. There we never left, but this is
- 0:56a bit of a hiatus for us. We have not recorded an episode
- 0:58in over a month and so I'll be honest, this all feels brand new
- 1:01to me. Yeah, How does this work?
- 1:03This is a microphone. Microphone named after
- 1:07microphone. Oh, I hate that guy.
- 1:13Anyway, that's a great question. How does this work?
- 1:15Maybe somebody listening is asking that question cause
- 1:17they've never heard our show before.
- 1:19In case you're wondering, Meet You Double Feature is a
- 1:21double-blind movie review show. We have two films to talk about
- 1:25back-to-back that neither of us had seen before recording them
- 1:27for this episode. But Frank gave me one to watch,
- 1:30and I gave him one to watch, and we're going to decide who made
- 1:32the better blind movie selection.
- 1:35I think it was me. Frank thinks it was him.
- 1:37He's incorrect. They were on the show.
- 1:42Later on in the show, we're going to talk about the movie I
- 1:44asked Frank to watch, 1990s Dick Tracy.
- 1:47And 1st, we're going to start with the film that Frank you
- 1:50selected, 1995's Tank Girl. Also of note, this is the end of
- 1:55our season about forgotten superhero films, as you can tell
- 1:58from the fact that these are barely superhero films.
- 2:03I think Dick Tracy is. Dick Tracy is Tank Girl a little
- 2:06bit more of a stretch. I would call it a comic movie
- 2:09because Tank Girl was a comic strip, not so much a superhero.
- 2:12But we didn't know that. We had not seen the film.
- 2:16That's the premise. That's the premise of the show.
- 2:20Now, Frank, before I roll in with my review, any context for
- 2:24why you asked me to watch Tank Girl?
- 2:27You know, I was trying to really get us to the outer, the outer
- 2:32edges of what constitutes a superhero slash comic book
- 2:36movie, I guess. Yep.
- 2:38And honestly, we've seen a lot of them.
- 2:41You know, this was an effort to see some forgotten superhero
- 2:45films. You know, it turns out there
- 2:48wasn't that many that we forgot. Well, we being you and I
- 2:52specifically because there are some more obscure ones that
- 2:55people would enjoy that we just watched growing up already.
- 2:58You know, like Darkman from Sam Raimi or like the Phantom.
- 3:02Like there's some famous forgotten ones that we weren't
- 3:05able to cover for the show because we don't one of us had
- 3:06already seen them. So yeah, we were kind of at Slim
- 3:09Pickens here towards the end of the season, but we did our best.
- 3:13Yeah, I think, I think we've made some varied choices which I
- 3:16like this like these are all superhero movies, hard to see a
- 3:22through line through all of them.
- 3:24Although I will with Dick Tracy, there's there's definitely some
- 3:26common elements with some previous films that I've watched
- 3:29this season, so. OK, looking forward to that.
- 3:32I do have some production notes about Tank Girl as a character
- 3:36that do tie into one of our previous films that we've
- 3:39discussed this season, so I'll start with that.
- 3:41Tank Girl, as I mentioned, was a comic strip that was adapted
- 3:44into a film in 1995. It began, I believe, in the late
- 3:4880s as sort of a counterculture. Like girl rocker character in
- 3:54the United Kingdom was made by two British dudes who are more
- 3:58well known. At least one of them is more
- 4:00well known as the person who created the artwork for the
- 4:03gorillas the band. Oh wait, so he did Tank Girl
- 4:07first? Yeah, let me pull up the name so
- 4:09that I don't look foolish. That's gorillas with AZ
- 4:13actually. What's the name of the band?
- 4:16The name of the guy? Tank Girl and the Gorillas are
- 4:20connected through their Co creator, British artist Jamie
- 4:23Hewlett. So that is a connection I was
- 4:25not expecting when I sat down to watch Tank Girl.
- 4:28Awesome, that would have been cool if there was gorillas music
- 4:31in the movie. Oh, that would have been pretty
- 4:33neat. Actually, it would have fit.
- 4:34Unfortunately that project came later, otherwise I'm sure they
- 4:37would have. Yeah.
- 4:39The other note that I had is that the origins of the comics,
- 4:42so the two creators, Hewlett and the other one whose name I
- 4:44didn't write down, Bad job doesn't.
- 4:47Matter. They're relevant.
- 4:49Hate that? Guy relevant.
- 4:50The other person? No, no, no, we'll look it up.
- 4:53British comic series created by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin.
- 4:56You can see why I forgot that other name, but not very
- 4:58notable. Just really going to drag this
- 5:01guy when? You.
- 5:03Remember his name? You're like freaking boring name
- 5:05guy over here. We'll cut that out so he looks
- 5:08smart. Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin
- 5:10created Tank Girl, I think when they were both still in college.
- 5:13The reason that the name Tank Girl came about, according to
- 5:16the Wikipedia article at least, is that there was sort of a
- 5:19running bit between Hewlett and some of the people in the band
- 5:22he was in at the time, where they were just adding Girl to
- 5:25the end of every character that they made-up.
- 5:27And it says it was because they had just seen the 1980s
- 5:29Supergirl movie. Whoa, Episode one.
- 5:33Yeah. So I guess they saw Supergirl
- 5:36probably the only ones and then just kept doing like Blank Girl
- 5:39as like a bit. And so then when they created
- 5:41Tank Girl, that's why she became Tank Girl.
- 5:43Isn't that crazy? They watched that movie in the
- 5:4580s and then nobody saw it again until this year when I watched
- 5:49it. When you watched it and we
- 5:52talked about it on the show, Yep, we're the only.
- 5:54Watched it in between. So anyway, that was my that was
- 5:58my long winded connection back to a superhero movie proper.
- 6:03But I did think that was kind of funny.
- 6:04Yeah, that's cool. I mean, it's connected to one we
- 6:08already saw. There you go.
- 6:09Can't be forgotten, the guy from the gorillas has seen it.
- 6:13Guy who did the artwork for the He's not a member of the band
- 6:16though, is he? No, I think it's just just the
- 6:18art. But I mean, that's it's kind of
- 6:20like a really crucial part of that band's aesthetic.
- 6:22More so than most, yeah. Yeah, who cares about the music?
- 6:26Who cares? Remember the monkey?
- 6:30He's a gorilla actually, with AZ.
- 6:31Oh, it's a good point. Anyway, that's my like
- 6:36production background on Tank Girl.
- 6:38It was a successful comic in the late 80s.
- 6:40It was like a counterculture icon.
- 6:43The comic itself was not really like a traditional narrative
- 6:46story. It was a very zany like
- 6:49surrealistic comic strip that didn't really follow any defined
- 6:52logic but kind of had that like grungy riot girl art style.
- 6:59So really, really easy to translate into a feature film.
- 7:02Oh yeah, certainly. So it's not as if it was a
- 7:05horrible idea that didn't work and was a total flop.
- 7:09You know, I will say though, real quick, I, I actually feel
- 7:12like stuff like that typically is something that would be great
- 7:17to adapt into another medium because it is so loose.
- 7:21You know, I, I feel like there's some, I, I know some people
- 7:24really liked maybe the first season of like the Last of Us TV
- 7:27show, but from what I've heard, people have fallen off on the
- 7:30second season. And I've just always thought I'm
- 7:32like, what a bad thing to adapt though, because it's already a
- 7:36story that's been told in such a cinematic way, like through the
- 7:39game, through the original. And so it's like, if you're
- 7:42going to adapt something, I feel like there should be some
- 7:45purpose or intentionality behind the adaptation because it is
- 7:48going to inherently be something different.
- 7:51But I feel like if you have something that's just loose and
- 7:53kind of a kinetic energy idea and imagery, you can kind of do
- 7:58whatever you want with that really, which I think would be a
- 8:00fun jumping off point for an adaptation.
- 8:03But that's a good point. I think on paper there's no
- 8:07reason this couldn't have turned into a good movie 'cause just
- 8:10like you said, all you need is the aesthetic.
- 8:11And then you can kind of use that as an opportunity to create
- 8:15like a core narrative out of it 'cause it still had characters
- 8:17in a setting it just was not. It didn't really bother with the
- 8:21traditional narrative structure in most of the comics.
- 8:24Tank Girl also went on a hiatus after some point in the 90s and
- 8:27then came back in like the 20 tens for a while.
- 8:30So it's really only had a couple of short runs.
- 8:34And I think there's there's still more to be done.
- 8:36I think even now there's probably you could make Tank
- 8:38Girl again now and it would probably have a better chance of
- 8:40working than it did in 95. Like a movie?
- 8:42You mean like a movie adaptation of it?
- 8:45Because I do think that what we got in the 90s, I'll say right
- 8:48off the bat, classic movie adaptation problem, the studio
- 8:52got involved. That's like the overarching
- 8:54problem with the movie is that the director and the 2 original
- 8:58comic creators both like have all gone on record saying like
- 9:01this movie got taken out of our hands in post production.
- 9:04They made a bunch of changes, they censored it a lot, and the
- 9:06end result was not what we wanted to make.
- 9:09Yeah, tale as old as time. Tale as old as time as Tank
- 9:14Girl. She have a tank.
- 9:16She actually have a tank. Yes, so the premise of Tank Girl
- 9:19is that she lives in a tank in like a post apocalyptic earth
- 9:22and drives it around. And we do get to that point in
- 9:26the movie, but at the beginning she is not.
- 9:28She doesn't have her tank until like the second act.
- 9:30Oh, so it's like a surf monkey situation again?
- 9:33It's a surf monkey situation, but she does get it long before
- 9:36the end of the movie, so that's good.
- 9:38OK, cool, cool. What's she doing before she's?
- 9:42That's what she lives like. Why'd they call her?
- 9:45Was she just called Girl at the beginning?
- 9:49OK so before I launch into the actual plot of the movie Tank
- 9:52Girl, I would have never guessed this would come up.
- 9:55But I honestly have to give a content warning for this movie
- 9:58and even the discussion because Tank Girl.
- 10:00The movie features many, many scenes, especially in the first
- 10:05half, of people threatening sexual violence against women
- 10:09and at least one against a child, and none of it is handled
- 10:14with enough tact to be like, not uncomfortable to watch.
- 10:19It's a huge part of the discussion.
- 10:21And I think a lot of the movie was trying to be about a lot of
- 10:24like, feminist ideas. And there's been a lot of stuff
- 10:27written about it since about whether it's truly a feminist
- 10:30film or almost like just appropriated the aesthetics of
- 10:33feminist filmmaking. It's a lot.
- 10:35It's like weirdly heavy despite having such a goofy premise.
- 10:38So just wanted to forewarn with that before we actually get into
- 10:41the Plot Summary at all. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:44I mean, I, I don't know if it made it in the episode, but that
- 10:47there's, there's a scene like that in Supergirl as well.
- 10:50And it's like upsetting and like comically stupid in that movie
- 10:55too 'cause she has superpowers and she keeps fending these
- 10:57people off, but then they still persist.
- 11:00It's. Like.
- 11:02That doesn't even make sense. It's upsetting, and I think in
- 11:05Tank Girl it's intended to be upsetting, but it does tip the
- 11:08tone of the movie over into being like kind of miserable at
- 11:11the beginning because when the story launches, it's set in the
- 11:17future. I think it's like post
- 11:18apocalyptic Earth. And there's actually a really
- 11:21funny line at the beginning because Tank Girl herself,
- 11:24played by Lori Petty, is narrating the opening and she
- 11:27just says it's 2033, the world is screwed now.
- 11:31I was like, Yep, Correct. Yeah.
- 11:34I mean. Screwed sooner than that, but.
- 11:37Sooner than that. It didn't even take that long,
- 11:39Tank Girl, but thank you. And she explains that it's a
- 11:42post apocalypse specifically because it like stopped raining.
- 11:46There's been no water in like 11 or 12 years.
- 11:49Most of the world is a desert. The only people who have water
- 11:53is this big evil mega corporation that they just call
- 11:57water in power because they have all of the remaining natural
- 12:00resources. They're hoarding them and
- 12:02essentially trying to rule the world by killing or enslaving
- 12:06anybody who's trying to live out in the desert by themselves.
- 12:09Yeah, none of that can ever happen.
- 12:12None of that could ever happen. Water scarcity?
- 12:14Never heard of it. Never.
- 12:15Heard of it, don't want to talk about it, it scares me.
- 12:18Don't stop bringing it up, Tank Girl.
- 12:24So that is our premise. Tank Girl lives in like a little
- 12:27commune out in the desert. There's this kind of neat set
- 12:31that they have set up in the first act where it's like a
- 12:33house, like a three story old looking house that's like half
- 12:37covered up by the sand, like it's like half submerged into
- 12:40this big sand dune. And so in order to still have a
- 12:43walkway to get up to, like the top floor, they built this big
- 12:46curved wooden ramp that looks like the entrance to Helms Deep.
- 12:50Cool, I like that. Is this this a practical set
- 12:52we're talking about here? There is some fun practical sets
- 12:56and also some cute little miniatures of like the evil
- 12:58headquarters and and some of the action stuff.
- 13:01So production design good enough, kind of interesting,
- 13:04very like zany 90s look to the whole thing. 90's the 90s were
- 13:09so zany. 90s were so zany there was no water I guess.
- 13:15They said surge, everybody was just drinking surge non-stop.
- 13:20Surge. That's true.
- 13:22Frank, I might have talked to you about this before, but there
- 13:24is a website you can find online of an Internet movement of
- 13:27people trying to make, I think Coca-Cola bring back Surge.
- 13:31And it's like the most pathetic thing I've ever seen because the
- 13:35language they use is not like bring back Surge because the
- 13:39fans love it. They're trying to like speak
- 13:41corporate. They're like Surge is a
- 13:43marketable commercial entity for Coca-Cola Company.
- 13:48Oh, I'm glad you called it a movement, you know, because it's
- 13:50like a really important thing that we should be focusing on.
- 13:53I don't want to think about the the water shortage or any other
- 13:56real. Problems.
- 13:58Where's the surge? I mean, listen, what do you call
- 14:036 people and a website if not a movement?
- 14:05It's a band. It's a band.
- 14:11Anyway, so Tank Girl starts. Tank Girl lives in a commune
- 14:15with like some of her friends and these little kids who are
- 14:17just kind of doing their best to to make it in a world that
- 14:20doesn't have any water. The other faction in the world
- 14:24that they have to worry about is this group that they call the
- 14:26Rippers who according to the opening narration are like flesh
- 14:31eating monsters and kind of a classic like post apocalypse
- 14:34trope if it kind of felt like they were talking about the the
- 14:37reavers from from Firefly if you remember that.
- 14:41I was picturing like the psychos from Borderlands but.
- 14:45Same thing. Yep, just like crazy cannibal
- 14:48monster people living out in the desert.
- 14:50So those are the two groups that our main cast has to worry
- 14:52about. They have to deal with the
- 14:53rippers and they have to deal with Water and Power, who are
- 14:56just the evil organization. Almost immediately, Water and
- 15:02Power shows up and kills all of Tank Girl's friends and kills
- 15:05her boyfriend and kills her pet ox that she was riding around on
- 15:10and kidnaps the little girl that she was friends with and kidnaps
- 15:14Tank Girl. And this is where we get like
- 15:17our three or four scenes in a row of people threatening sexual
- 15:20violence against Tank Girl. So huge bummer in the first like
- 15:2510 minutes of the movie. 1st 10 minutes, all that happens.
- 15:29It's almost instantly we get a short scene of her coming across
- 15:36these people who got killed by rippers and like taking the
- 15:38water supplies that have been left behind while doing this
- 15:41narration that I swear was all added in post and was not
- 15:44intended to be there because it's very like it kind of
- 15:46clashes with what's on screen. Like visually Tank Girl is a
- 15:50silly movie, but trying to play it like the world they live in
- 15:52is kind of like sad and dangerous.
- 15:54But Lori Petty's narration is like, she's putting on this
- 15:57voice that makes her sound like she's 12 years old, and she's
- 16:00just like, that's me. I'm Tank Girl.
- 16:03Probably wondering how I got here.
- 16:06How did I make it through life without surge?
- 16:11Oh my gosh. Well.
- 16:12It can only go up from here. You just get all the sad stuff
- 16:16out of the way right at the beginning.
- 16:17Dude, we don't get the sad stuff out of the way for the first
- 16:19like hour of the movie. It's so miserable.
- 16:23This is supposed to be a fun movie.
- 16:25I thought this was aimed at like kids when I when I turned it on,
- 16:28but instead it's like, no, no, no, we're going to do kidnap,
- 16:32sexual violence, threats, and then just like literal torture
- 16:36for multiple scenes in a row. What?
- 16:38So like our characters don't get to even have like a good time at
- 16:45all in the beginning. It's just straight into just
- 16:49bad, bad times, bad times at Ridgemont High for the rest of
- 16:51the movie. That's not even what that's
- 16:55called. Yeah, pretty much.
- 17:00I think there's like 1 scene where she's like flirting with
- 17:03her boyfriend and talking to this kid that she knows and they
- 17:07try to establish that Tank Girl herself is really clinging on to
- 17:11like old pop culture artifacts that she's collected in the form
- 17:14of like old junk. So she has like like pin up
- 17:17calendars and props and just things that she came across in
- 17:20the desert. And so she tries to make like
- 17:22pop culture references that don't even really make sense
- 17:24because she's not very old and the world has been messed up for
- 17:27a long time at this point. It's kind of like when the genie
- 17:30shows up in Aladdin and starts talking about like modern pop
- 17:32culture stuff and it's like, excuse me?
- 17:35Yeah, but that that works in Aladdin.
- 17:37It works in Aladdin. It kind of works in Tank Girl,
- 17:40but she seems to know more than makes sense.
- 17:41Like she makes a joke at one point about like, oh, I got to
- 17:44get home to watch Baywatch. And it's like, do you even
- 17:46really know what ATV is like? How long have things been this
- 17:49messed up? You're like 20 years old.
- 17:51Wasn't this also a thing with like Star Lord in Guardians of
- 17:54the Galaxy? He was making like a lot of
- 17:57references to like 80s culture even though you left earth when
- 18:01he was like 9 years old. So exactly it's it's kind of on
- 18:04par with that where like it's harkening to something for the
- 18:06viewer's sake, even though the character maybe wouldn't
- 18:08remember a lot of this stuff. And that makes sense in the
- 18:11comic strip because I think Tank Girl has a bit of a meta
- 18:14narrative quality in that where she can like wink to camera a
- 18:17little more directly. She doesn't do that in the movie
- 18:20because she's busy suffering. Oh, she doesn't do like the Zack
- 18:23Morris like. She does not call a time out.
- 18:26And yeah, like Zack Morris, she just gets kidnapped and there
- 18:30her small child friend is kidnapped, and then she
- 18:33interacts with the bad guy played by Malcolm McDowell.
- 18:36So we got a real actor in the movie Lookout.
- 18:40Lookout. Wait, who's playing Tank Girl?
- 18:41Oh, Tank Girl's Lori Petty, who you might remember as one of the
- 18:46leads in Point Break, the Keanu Reeves action movie.
- 18:49She was the female lead in that. Oh, OK.
- 18:52Yeah, I like that you had to clarify what point break was.
- 18:55Like I I wouldn't know that. The audience might not know.
- 18:59We don't know. Oh.
- 19:00Oh, I forgot about them, Yeah. There's other people here, so
- 19:06yes, if you've seen Point Break audience then she is the female
- 19:09lead from that opposite Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick
- 19:13Swayze. Swayze.
- 19:15Yeah, the Swayze didn't we talk a lot about Swayze recently?
- 19:18Was that. No, that was in one of our.
- 19:20Oh, that was in our our ranking every movie ever made.
- 19:23Yeah, we we went on and on about Roadhouse and how much we all
- 19:25love Patrick Swayze. So check that out if you have
- 19:27not already to hear more about the sways man.
- 19:29In the meantime, back to Lori Petty.
- 19:32So I don't even know how to properly summarize a lot of this
- 19:35because it happens kind of quickly.
- 19:37She gets abducted. She gets brought back to the
- 19:39Water and Power headquarters, which is like a fully
- 19:41functioning building that has all this stuff in it because
- 19:43they've hoarded all the resources left on Earth.
- 19:46Malcolm McDowell tries to hire her to work for him because she
- 19:49showed that she's fairly capable.
- 19:51She like, stole somebody's gun and killed a lot of his soldiers
- 19:54while they were attacking. So he's like, just come work for
- 19:56me. And she says no because she's
- 19:59very rebellious. And basically her whole
- 20:02character is that she just like, refuses to be subjugated by all
- 20:04these evil men. Like, even when some of them are
- 20:08like, threatening to assault her, like, she just always
- 20:11throws it back in their face by being like, hypersexual towards
- 20:14them. And then when Malcolm McDowell
- 20:15threatens physical violence against her, she just like,
- 20:18never. Let's them see it affect her.
- 20:20She's just always cracking jokes.
- 20:22That's like the core of the character in the movie is like,
- 20:25you can't, you can't bring me down.
- 20:28You know, the man can't hold me back.
- 20:30But for the audience's sake, we just have to watch them try for
- 20:34like 20 minutes and it's a huge bummer.
- 20:37What an odd narrative pacing choice.
- 20:41I'm so curious as to like where the movie goes from there.
- 20:43When you when you are starting at such a low point.
- 20:46Strange. It's real.
- 20:47Like bottom of the second act like low point storytelling and
- 20:51it's like the very first thing that happens.
- 20:54Tank Girl never gets a chance to really even establish what she
- 20:58wants in the context of this story.
- 21:00Right. That's what I was thinking.
- 21:01It's like what, what journey is she on when she's immediately
- 21:04suffering? And like, typically for a movie
- 21:06like this, you would want to show how capable she is in like
- 21:09certain situations, you know, So it's like maybe have like that
- 21:13first act action sequence where she's like, successful before
- 21:17things start to go poorly for her because it's like, we're
- 21:20supposed to be rooting for this character.
- 21:22This is the problem with the movie, like among many, is that
- 21:25you have no reason to really care about her, aside from the
- 21:28fact that we obviously don't like seeing anybody put through
- 21:30these like, horrible situations. Because we don't know her, we
- 21:32don't know anything about her. And her character never shows
- 21:37any vulnerability even like in private so that the audience
- 21:40could see that she's like putting on a front to to stick
- 21:43it to the evil characters. She's just always on.
- 21:46She's always like in character as this like unflappable, you
- 21:51know, rebellious hero character. So the whole time I'm just like,
- 21:54all right, Tank Girl seems fine with all of this torture stuff.
- 21:56I'm not I'm sad. Yeah, she's just like, don't
- 21:59have a cow, man like. Pretty much it it it'd be like
- 22:05if you tried to like water board, Bart Simpson.
- 22:07That's like what this movie feels like.
- 22:10That's a good pull quote for the movie.
- 22:13You tried to water board Bart Simpson.
- 22:19So that's, that's like the whole first act.
- 22:21For some reason, like, Malcolm McDowell becomes fixated on this
- 22:24idea that he wants to, like, break her spirit because she's,
- 22:26she shows so much resistance to it.
- 22:29And it even, it goes so specific, like he locks her in
- 22:31like, a freezer for a while and then comes together and it's
- 22:34like, you're going to work for me now.
- 22:35And then she, like, spits in his face, which is supposed to be,
- 22:38like, doubly insulting because there's so much water scarcity.
- 22:42It's like Dune. She's like, wasting her
- 22:43moisture. Yeah.
- 22:45Yeah. And then her second thing is so
- 22:49bizarre. He sticks her in a giant metal
- 22:52pipe that he explains as it goes further down and gets smaller
- 22:55and smaller. So you eventually get stuck and
- 22:58he's just like, is it that scary if you're claustrophobic?
- 23:01And then so he like, puts her in there for like several days and
- 23:04then when he takes her back out, he's like, just say it.
- 23:06Just say I won. Just say I, I broke you.
- 23:08And she never does. That's like the whole dynamic
- 23:10for her, and for why he becomes so obsessed as the villain in
- 23:14the movie, is that she just won't give him the satisfaction
- 23:16no matter how badly he treats her.
- 23:19Sounds like episode of Star Trek The Next Generation where Picard
- 23:24is being tortured. OK, let's dig into this.
- 23:27That sounds more fun. No, hang on, the pipe thing does
- 23:31sound horrifying though. I wouldn't want it.
- 23:33Just just like, couldn't you just stay in the part of the
- 23:36pipe where it's bigger though? Like.
- 23:37Well, they just like, it's too, too slick.
- 23:39They just like throw her down the pipe and she gets stuck.
- 23:42Yeah, that sounds awful. I've always been scared of
- 23:44getting stuck in like one of those like water park slides,
- 23:47you know? Oh, yeah.
- 23:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a horrible thought, isn't
- 23:51it? See, this is this is the fun
- 23:521990s sci-fi movie Tank Girl. It's just like, man, that would
- 23:55be a horrible way to die. And it's like we're 20 minutes
- 23:57in. I haven't even started in on my
- 23:59popcorn. And I'm just like, well.
- 24:02Oh, I don't want this. I'm going to die someday.
- 24:11Chicago Tribune says I don't want this.
- 24:13I'm going to die someday. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:20So eventually we meet another character called Jet.
- 24:25I think in the comic she's called Jet Girl because again,
- 24:28we're still doing the Supergirl thing.
- 24:29In the movie they just called her Jet.
- 24:31She is another prisoner of water and power who has like technical
- 24:35know how. And so they have her in this
- 24:37hangar fixing their like, helicopters and planes and
- 24:40stuff. And she, as the other woman in
- 24:43the movie, is also constantly being molested by a strange man.
- 24:48They have multiple scenes of this soldier guy who just keeps
- 24:51saying like, you know, I'm giving you all these special
- 24:53privileges because you're smart. You know, maybe you got to make
- 24:56it worth my while or I'll take it all away.
- 24:59And I, I kid you not, despite the literal post apocalypse
- 25:02happening, you know how Tank Girl gets this guy to leave her
- 25:04alone? She goes up to Jet and kisses
- 25:08Jet herself. And the guy's homophobia is so
- 25:12strong that it repels him and he leaves.
- 25:16What? Yeah, he's, he's busy trying to
- 25:20molest this woman, and another woman comes up and kisses that
- 25:23woman and he's too disgusted and so he has to go home.
- 25:28This. Is not at all what I thought
- 25:29this movie was going. To be it's not, it's such a
- 25:33bummer. The whole movie is a bummer
- 25:36until the second-half and then it becomes like a can't be
- 25:39sci-fi movie. Like so she lives in a tank,
- 25:44right? Like.
- 25:45Eventually she steals a tank. She doesn't even know how to
- 25:47drive it at the beginning, but her and Jet eventually escape
- 25:52and then Jet has a plane and Tank Girl has a tank.
- 25:55OK, see. Like, why is that not where the
- 25:57movie starts? Why do we not start there?
- 26:01Like, I don't know. That's fun.
- 26:03Now we're now we're in the territory of fun where you can
- 26:06go to a movie and be entertained.
- 26:09Much like how on our show we try to stay in that territory of fun
- 26:12rather than this ravine of misery.
- 26:17OK, so they get their they get their cool tank and jet and
- 26:21they're like, wow, how So they wait, they call themselves that
- 26:26after they get those things or that was like already their
- 26:29name. And they're like, oh, this is
- 26:30convenient. Like now.
- 26:31I'm Jack. I'm so glad I found a tank
- 26:33because I've been calling myself Tank Girl this whole time and
- 26:34all I had were shoes. No, she's they have different
- 26:39names. They call Tank Girl Rebecca and
- 26:42Jet, they just called Jet. So I think that one's more just
- 26:44a coincidence. But then I think at one point
- 26:48Tank Girl in the tanks is like, I'm Tank Girl.
- 26:51And so she Dons the the title. It's a superhero origin story.
- 26:54You know, once you get the tank she get hit by a radioactive
- 26:57tank. Yeah, I was going to say maybe
- 27:00Girl's her last name. Like before she was Rebecca
- 27:02Girl. And now?
- 27:03Rebecca Girl and Now. She's tank girl.
- 27:06And when they threw her down the torture pipe, she was like, what
- 27:08am I, pipe girl? Yeah.
- 27:13That's how the movie feels. Like they do this really
- 27:16upsetting torture scene. And then her attempt to rebuke
- 27:18it is always so like, gotcha. And it's like, you didn't get
- 27:21them. You can't.
- 27:23Like. OK.
- 27:24The movie, I think, is trying to be feminist filmmaking because
- 27:29it's been written about in a lot of, like, books and articles
- 27:31about its role in, like, feminist film of the 90s.
- 27:34And there are certain things it does that show that it was
- 27:37leaning that way because despite all of the like, you know, vibes
- 27:41of the whole thing, there's no actual explicit content shown on
- 27:45screen. Tank Girl as a character is not
- 27:47shot in like a suggestive or like, objectifying manner.
- 27:51And I do think a lot of the story is supposed to be about
- 27:53her, like taking the power back in this deeply problematic
- 27:58patriarchal society that she lives in in the post apocalypse.
- 28:02But the dynamic of it is too sinister for her, just like
- 28:06being sassy to feel like taking the power back, you know what I
- 28:09mean? Yeah, totally.
- 28:11She can't just be like crying and it's like sobbing and be
- 28:15like cowabunga like. Like, that's me.
- 28:20That was me watching. Like, was the movie written or
- 28:28directed by a woman too? Or is it like, you know, are
- 28:31there any like women behind the scenes in the making of the
- 28:34film? Because I feel like that would
- 28:36be an important distinction as well.
- 28:37Good question. The original Tank Girl comic
- 28:39series was written by two men. The film was directed by a
- 28:42woman. Although she's one of the ones
- 28:45who said that like the story got taken out of her hands and there
- 28:47was a lot of edits made. And I do think that some of what
- 28:52was cut, which I'll get into does suggest that some of the
- 28:55more like feminist elements of the visuals were were what was
- 28:59removed. Like there was things done
- 29:01trying to think of an example, like there's all this stuff
- 29:05about women being abused in the movie, but then they also try to
- 29:08do things to flip the script with Tank Girl because she
- 29:10herself is like a very hypersexual character.
- 29:12She's just like constantly making sexual references to
- 29:14everybody else. And like, I think her house at
- 29:17the beginning, she was supposed to have like a room full of sex
- 29:21toys, like as a visual gag. And they, like, cut that out
- 29:24because they were like, that's like, that makes people
- 29:27uncomfortable. And it's like, oh, OK, like,
- 29:29that's uncomfortable. Yeah.
- 29:31Which which people does that make you?
- 29:32Does that make you uncomfortable?
- 29:34Exactly Male. Studio hits, male studio hits.
- 29:37Or like there was a scene that I think I read was actually
- 29:40present in the theatrical release but was cut in every
- 29:42subsequent release, including what I watched.
- 29:45Where I'm jumping ahead a bit. Tank Girl ends up with a mutant
- 29:50kangaroo boyfriend who is half man half kangaroo.
- 29:55I was going to say, when does the mutant kangaroo?
- 29:56Boyfriend show up, boyfriend show up.
- 29:59And there's a scene in the original cut of the movie that's
- 30:01like them in bed together after having had sex.
- 30:03And supposedly the company that built all of these very
- 30:07impressive like kangaroo mask prosthetics had built like an
- 30:11oversized like kangaroo penis is like a joke that was supposed to
- 30:14be visible during that scene. And they made them cut that too.
- 30:18But it was in the theatrical cut.
- 30:20It was supposedly in the theatrical cut, but a lot of the
- 30:23things that the studio made the director cut out of the film
- 30:26were like phallic imagery done to sort of trivialize men, you
- 30:31know what I mean? And like the types of things
- 30:32where, if they were still present, would maybe aid in
- 30:35making the movie feel more like counterculturally feminist.
- 30:38And instead it's like, cut out all the parts that make men look
- 30:41silly and leave in all the parts about women getting hurt.
- 30:43And then you can release the movie and it's like, oh.
- 30:46Yeah. I mean, I mean, I'm at least
- 30:47starting to see the, like, overall artistic intention of
- 30:51the film now. Like, yeah, before it was, it
- 30:55was heavily altered. Yeah, I will say that as far as
- 30:59I could tell, I think even if this movie had been released in
- 31:02the format that the original authors intended, it still would
- 31:06not have been very good because these story structure elements
- 31:08are like still poorly arranged. It's it's too much suffering for
- 31:13a character we don't know anything about.
- 31:15And then ultimately the confidence of the other
- 31:16characters get just isn't severe enough to feel like cathartic.
- 31:21Like you can tell a story about something really upsetting or
- 31:24serious and still make the audience feel like it was worth
- 31:28experiencing because it kind of meant something.
- 31:31Or like was trying to really elucidate something important
- 31:34that happens in the real world and Tank Girl just does not earn
- 31:38the right to cover such messed up stuff in what is seen on
- 31:41screen. Yeah, yeah, that's kind of what
- 31:45it sounds like. It's like that.
- 31:47That's the thing that's most baffling or confusing to me.
- 31:50Is that just that it was structured in such a way.
- 31:53Yeah, I, I just don't understand.
- 31:54I mean, I, I guess I again, like if that is the point they're
- 31:59trying to drive home, if that's the thing they're trying to
- 32:01illustrate right away is like what this woman is going through
- 32:04in this world. I still think there's another
- 32:07way to do that in a way that brings the audience in.
- 32:12You know, you have to, you have to lure the audience in to, to
- 32:14tell this story, I think. I agree, I think even as even
- 32:20the parts of the audience that would naturally be sympathetic
- 32:22to everything the authors are talking about, like from the
- 32:25jump, that's just not really how a movie works.
- 32:28You're trying to take the audience on like an emotional
- 32:30roller coaster to land them at a point where they come to the
- 32:33conclusion you want them to have.
- 32:35It's like inception. You have to like plant the seed,
- 32:37but let them have the thought. Whereas Tank Girl just like
- 32:39shoves the thought at you. And then then like halfway
- 32:42through gets tired of doing that and is like anyway, kangaroo
- 32:45guy. And it's like, well hold on, why
- 32:47are we now backtracking? Cause the reason that shows up
- 32:51is that I mentioned the Rippers are like the evil flesh eating
- 32:54monsters. But when Tank Girl and Jet
- 32:56finally encounter them, you find out that they are these like
- 33:00army experiments gone wrong. And they're just these like
- 33:02hippie monster guys who have all these like they look like
- 33:06furries. To be honest, they all just look
- 33:07like dog man and kangaroo man. But they're totally like nice.
- 33:12And well, they're not nice because they all still are kind
- 33:14of lecherous and creepy towards all the women, but they're more
- 33:17nice. Yeah, nice.
- 33:19Nicer than. The.
- 33:20Other people we've seen. Yeah, if you take like, sexual
- 33:25abuse, it's like a baseline for this world, which you, the movie
- 33:28asks you to do, They're still the nice ones in comparison.
- 33:32Yeah, yeah, this is reminding me of like, like I'm watching Game
- 33:36of Thrones for the first time and that's how I feel about so
- 33:40much of that show. I'm just like, I, I get it.
- 33:42There's a lot of good storytelling happening here and
- 33:45I and I see all of the like, you know, violence and attitudes
- 33:50towards women that you're showing in this story.
- 33:52It to illustrate a point. But that doesn't make it less
- 33:55upsetting to see all the time, especially when you're like
- 33:58binging a show like that. And it's like, Oh my gosh,
- 34:01another one of these scenes. I don't need to see this again.
- 34:03Yep. Yep, Yep, that is exactly how
- 34:06watching Tank Girl feels. It's so bizarre how heavily they
- 34:11double down on these elements. Like I said, I don't.
- 34:13There's a scene. Tank Girl's little kid friend
- 34:16gets kidnapped, and they track her down to what is shown to be
- 34:20like a strip club. And there's this whole scene
- 34:23where, like, they're trying to, like, send that girl away with a
- 34:26grown man. And Tank Girl and company stop
- 34:28this from happening. And I kid you not, the very next
- 34:31thing that happens is they find the woman who runs the club and
- 34:34is responsible for this heinous threat of violence against a
- 34:38child. And they're like, how are we
- 34:40going to pay her back? You know what Tank Girl does?
- 34:42She makes her sing a song and then Tank Girl starts singing
- 34:45the same song and it literally turns into a song and dance
- 34:48number in the middle of the movie.
- 34:51Wow. This movie is starting to sound
- 34:53weirdly like avant-garde in a way.
- 34:55Like it's like, was this AI mean?
- 34:58I guess, yeah, You said it was a theatrical release, but it
- 35:01sounds like this movie had like higher ambitions almost in terms
- 35:06of almost being like a like an art house film.
- 35:10Kind of I think it, it almost matches the spirit of the
- 35:14original source material in terms of being very like
- 35:16confrontational. But again, the edge is missing
- 35:20from the whole thing, even in what did get filmed and kept in
- 35:23the movie. Like you don't.
- 35:25The other funny thing about that scene, not that anyway it's
- 35:28especially funny is that they rescue the little kid from
- 35:30immediate harm. They do a song and dance number.
- 35:32Nothing bad actually happens to the people responsible for that.
- 35:36And then in the middle of singing and dancing, they stick
- 35:38around for too long and the water and power soldier show up
- 35:41and they kidnap the girl again. And it's like, Tanko, that's
- 35:45your fault. You did that.
- 35:46You sat around literally dancing on a stage.
- 35:50And then the kid you saved is now missing and in danger again.
- 35:53And it's like, are we supposed to be sympathetic to that?
- 35:54Like that was on you. That's on you.
- 35:58That's on you. What's her name?
- 36:00What was her original name? Rebecca.
- 36:03Rebecca girl, that's on you. She'd.
- 36:06Call you loser girl. So anyway, I don't story wise.
- 36:13You don't need to know the rest man.
- 36:14It's just they they meet they meet up with the kangaroo Bros
- 36:20who are all like super goofy. Iced tea is in the movie.
- 36:23Is one of these guys lawn orders iced tea?
- 36:27They're all Kangaroos. Half of them are dogs.
- 36:30One of them is a kangaroo. But they just say that it was
- 36:33like an army experiment gone wrong and that the army, like,
- 36:37tried to kill them all afterwards.
- 36:39And then they just ran into this little, like, hippie hideout.
- 36:42And, like, one of them's like, reciting poetry and playing the
- 36:45saxophone. Like, it feels like somebody's
- 36:48weird caricature of, like, hippie liberals, but they're
- 36:53supposed to just actually be the good guy characters.
- 36:55I'm like, oh, why are they so lame?
- 36:58Yeah, so interesting this this movie like to what I was saying
- 37:02earlier where you where you take like what is kind of loose
- 37:05source material and adapt it. You know, it almost feels like a
- 37:08like a Rorschach test of sorts that like, if you gave this
- 37:11material to different directors, like what they would give back,
- 37:16you know, like what type of film they would make.
- 37:19Because there's a lot of interesting elements here to use
- 37:24in this story. Like, I like, I like mutant
- 37:26kangaroo boyfriend. That's just a funny sentence.
- 37:30Like it? Just feels good to say.
- 37:33Feels good to say like, you know, it's there's stuff they
- 37:40can use in different thematic ways.
- 37:45You know, it's like take take these same core elements, take
- 37:48the the theming and just see what type of film comes out of
- 37:52that. This just seems like and
- 37:54unfortunate results I guess. Yeah, and I can place a lot of
- 37:58the blame on the studio for forcing the authors to
- 38:02compromise their vision. They're also, I haven't touched
- 38:04on this yet, a ton of stuff in the movie was never filmed.
- 38:07And so the entire thing is actually stitched together with
- 38:11hand animated like comic style sequences that you would think
- 38:17makes the movie a little more flashy and interesting.
- 38:20But they kind of stink and they're all really short and
- 38:22they don't properly bridge the gap between certain things that
- 38:24were never filmed, and so it just looks bad.
- 38:27Oh, I'm sure, because I mean, if you did that intentionally, like
- 38:31if, you know, you planned on having animated sequences
- 38:35throughout the film to interject at certain, you know, to kind of
- 38:39drive home emotional beats or something, that would be
- 38:42interesting. But when it's more of like a
- 38:44Band-Aid to fix stuff that was supposed to be shot and is not
- 38:48there, that just sounds sloppy. I mean, the end of the movie is
- 38:52an animated sequence because they didn't film the end of the
- 38:55movie. They beat Malcolm McDowell.
- 38:58And then the whole imagery that they keep using is like, we're
- 39:02going to break open this facility that's storing all the
- 39:05water and just kind of let it like run over the desert and
- 39:08like rehydrate the world. It's like, First off, the
- 39:11drought was not water in Power's fault.
- 39:14There's still not enough water. So these people are just going
- 39:16to burn through all those resources immediately, and then
- 39:18they're all going to die anyway. But the way it's depicted is a
- 39:21cartoon sequence of like a giant ocean wave and Tank Girl and her
- 39:24kangaroo boyfriend surfing on the wave and.
- 39:26And then the movie just ends. Oh.
- 39:29She's so she literally surf monkeys.
- 39:31She does surf monkey. She surf tanks.
- 39:34Yeah, so that's how this episode is going to end.
- 39:36Spoilers. It's just going to be an
- 39:37animated sequence for like the animated sequence sequence.
- 39:43Yeah, I'm going to go to. I'm going to go to art school.
- 39:45I'm going to learn how to draw. I'm going to make 47,000
- 39:49drawings to show 6 seconds of footage.
- 39:51Uh huh. There's going to be a
- 39:52significant delay between the recording of this episode and
- 39:55when it's released it. Might be 2033 by the time.
- 40:00I did it. Still not that good, but I did
- 40:02it. Still not that good, probably
- 40:03not worth the effort. Tank Girl.
- 40:08It's the final pull quotes on the box.
- 40:13I mean, that might be it. That might be girl.
- 40:16There's more, there's. More but like, there's not, you
- 40:19know? Take girls sound sad.
- 40:21I don't want to talk about sad assault.
- 40:26That's how I felt watching it. So cowabunga, dudes.
- 40:29We're going to go to our intermission now, and when we
- 40:32get back, Frank's going to talk about what is hopefully,
- 40:35hopefully a much more fun film, 1990s Dick Tracy.
- 40:42Oh, I got nothing. Well, you got nothing.
- 40:55All right, back now from the other side of the break.
- 40:57Frank, we turn things over to you to hopefully save this
- 41:00episode by talking about 1990s Dick Tracy.
- 41:04Save her from what? I don't what's what's the
- 41:06problem. What could you just bring
- 41:07everybody spirits up? I feel like I'm having a cow
- 41:09right now and I would like to no longer have a cow.
- 41:12Don't have a cow, man. Like how Tank Girl had a cow and
- 41:16then they shot it at the beginning anyway.
- 41:23Let's talk about Dick. No, you told me.
- 41:29That's what you told me. To do, I did say to do that Dick
- 41:32Tracy is also a comic book figure more in line with those
- 41:38like pulp action guys that we talked about like The Shadow
- 41:41earlier in the season. But once again, maybe not really
- 41:45a superhero, am I right? I mean I I.
- 41:47Think these guys are superheroes?
- 41:49This is big time the shadow. This is like, what if the shadow
- 41:53was OK? You know, like.
- 41:57What if the shadow was also yellow and cool?
- 42:03Yeah, that, that is one of my notes actually about Dick Tracy,
- 42:07Unlike the Shadow, which might come up a lot as it has all
- 42:10season. For some reason, yeah, it's.
- 42:15Just something we're always going to be talking about, it
- 42:17seems. It's like, I feel like in the
- 42:20Shadow, where we weren't really sure what his superpowers were
- 42:24or what he was doing or what was going on.
- 42:27Dick Tracy is very simple. It's very straightforward.
- 42:29He's just a guy who who dresses like the guy from Curious George
- 42:34and and has a watch that he can talk into.
- 42:39That's it. What?
- 42:39That's it, That's it. Who's on the other side of the
- 42:42watch? That's the other thing, his
- 42:45random cop buddies also have that communicator watch, but I
- 42:49think that was what made him special back in the day.
- 42:51I think like in the 1940s or whatever, that was all it took.
- 42:58Back when the world had water, that was all you needed.
- 43:01Dill had water. There was nothing else going
- 43:03wrong in the 1940s. I'm pretty sure nothing at all.
- 43:05Yeah. So he had a I'm OK right away.
- 43:09I'm guessing this is like, so that they could put
- 43:11communicators at the bottom of cereal boxes for kids, right.
- 43:15Oh. That sounds awesome.
- 43:16I saw a news headline just the other day that Kellogg's is
- 43:18bringing back toys and cereal boxes.
- 43:21Nice, that'll fix things that'll.
- 43:24Fix everything. I was having a really bad day,
- 43:27but if I get to the bottom of some Frosted Flakes and they put
- 43:30a Dick Tracy communicator watch, I'm going to be like, wow,
- 43:33what's that? No, yeah, it's just like a 2
- 43:36liter bottle of Surge at the bottom of my Frosted Flakes.
- 43:41If only bring back surge. I run the website by the way.
- 43:45I know. I figured you were one of the
- 43:46six guys. Just try to try to get the word
- 43:49out. Yeah, man, that's it.
- 43:51That's it. And he, like I said, he's not
- 43:53even the only one that hasn't like his friends have them too.
- 43:56That's crazy. So his only differentiating
- 44:00factor is he has a big yellow coat.
- 44:02And a gun, I guess he does a gun.
- 44:04I have a gun. But he's just like a cop.
- 44:07He's just a cop. Like he's like cool Mr.
- 44:10Policeman. Like he's a detective.
- 44:13I guess he's a detective. That's why he doesn't dress like
- 44:15a regular cop. That's where he wears yellow.
- 44:17He's a detective, OK, Yeah. People love cops.
- 44:21I feel like that we should remake this now.
- 44:23People love cops. Love it the TV show.
- 44:30OK, so Dick Tracy 1990, the characters from the 40s, do you
- 44:34did you look up much about like his origin or like what he was
- 44:38he mostly just a comic book character or did he do like ATV
- 44:40show at some point? There was like previous Dick
- 44:44Tracy films. I think they were like shorts.
- 44:47They were like 30 minute films maybe, but they they were
- 44:50released in the 1940s RKO Pictures released I think like 6
- 44:57Dick Tracy like movies. And I'm sure there have been
- 45:02other adaptations 'cause this is a character name.
- 45:04I've heard enough. I I guess like it's a
- 45:09recognizable character. I think people would see him and
- 45:13kind of know who it is, but he's definitely it's like they they
- 45:20should do an Avengers movie really that's just like all
- 45:23these like similar characters. You know where it's like Dick
- 45:25Tracy, the Shadow Green Hornet, Dark Wing Duck as I.
- 45:31Mentioned just a Humphrey Bogart just to balance things out.
- 45:35He's kind of there. You're like, I'm not really sure
- 45:37you belong here, but you can come too.
- 45:39And then Batman honestly is just the best version of this type of
- 45:45character. I, I, I think they just kind of
- 45:49perfected the formula with Batman.
- 45:52And that's why he's so popular, because it's a fun environment.
- 45:57It's a fun setting. This like the shadow is, you
- 46:00know, it's set, I believe in the 40s.
- 46:03And to follow up on him just kind of being a discount Batman
- 46:08in a way. Dick Tracy has like a rogue
- 46:10gallery and they're just a bunch of weirdos.
- 46:18Like there's they're, they're all like mobster, like gangster
- 46:22guys, you know, And I'm like, you know, like a Batman where
- 46:27it's like Clayface turns into clay.
- 46:30And we got Riddler. You know, it's like this is we
- 46:32got lips over here because he's got weird lips.
- 46:35And this guy, that's literally his name.
- 46:38And this guy over here is flat top because his head is flat on
- 46:42top. Oh.
- 46:42My God, I'm just picturing this turning.
- 46:44It's like Dick Tracy, like berates people with like
- 46:47deformities and handicaps and them just being like, stop
- 46:49giving those people those names. I was thinking that too.
- 46:53I'm like, but everyone calls them this like to their face.
- 46:56They like people go up to lips and they're like, hey, lips.
- 46:58And it's like, don't, I mean, you don't got to like, I'm sure.
- 47:02Was he born with that name? Like does he like that because.
- 47:06He like that. Yeah.
- 47:07Like if he went up to remember in in Steel, his, his partner
- 47:11Sparky ended up having to use a wheelchair.
- 47:12And like, Dick Tracy walks over and he's like, you must be.
- 47:14And they're like no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 47:18Slow down. DT Well, I just thought because
- 47:19that's what I see and that's all I can ascribe to them is how
- 47:22they look. Put the watch away, Dick Tracy.
- 47:28I mean, it's the 1940s, so Dick Tracy just being just being an
- 47:32old bigot would be pretty funny, honest.
- 47:34Pretty accurate, yeah. Maybe that's why all these guys
- 47:36don't like him. He's like stop calling me that,
- 47:38but I don't know. And they all it's crazy
- 47:42prosthetics in this movie too, like all of these guys are
- 47:45wearing super exaggerated like prosthetic make up to to
- 47:50highlight these features. The whole the whole film has a
- 47:54very strong aesthetic vibe that they committed to.
- 47:59It's I was and it's very clear watching the movie, but was very
- 48:04interesting after the fact too, to kind of look at the
- 48:06production ideology that that went into the film because they
- 48:11were very committed, I should say.
- 48:13Actually the film stars Warren Beatty as Dick Tracy.
- 48:18He also directed the movie and produced it.
- 48:22So huge part in this film. Like it was it was a film that
- 48:27was in sort of a development of health for a really long time
- 48:31and kind of bounced around different directors, like it was
- 48:35going to be in the hands of different people.
- 48:36I think at one point Spielberg was going to make a Dick Tracy
- 48:38movie. How interesting.
- 48:41I I think they got pretty far along with John Landis was going
- 48:47to direct, but then he killed some people, so.
- 48:50He did. Let's not elaborate on that at
- 48:52all. And they're like.
- 48:56It's OK, he killed them by negligence.
- 48:59Not it was, just it was. Just an accident that was his
- 49:02fault. Don't have a cow about it.
- 49:06We've been. Over this cow about it OK, it's.
- 49:11Spielberg being attached. Gosh, that's funny.
- 49:14Spielberg did do Adventures of Tin Tin at one point, which also
- 49:18feels kind of of a similar era of like comic strip characters,
- 49:22so that's not a huge surprise. Well, I mean, even Indiana Jones
- 49:25kind of falls into that. Like if you're looking at like
- 49:28I've always heard him, I don't know the like the exact
- 49:31terminology, but it was like like cereal.
- 49:37Not like cereal, like the Frost Flakes with the Serge in it, but
- 49:39like. You know, like, no, like, yeah,
- 49:44like pulp, serial action, short films, I don't know what.
- 49:48Right. Yeah, exactly.
- 49:49Like that's, that's, you know, it was like they, they, they
- 49:53kind of like homaged it even in like Toy Story, two people might
- 49:57be familiar with like the the whole Woody's roundup where it
- 50:00was like, oh, you know, Woody's going off the Cliff at the the
- 50:03end of this episode. TuneIn next time to see what
- 50:05happens. You know, it was just like,
- 50:06that's kind of what it like Indiana Jones is homaging.
- 50:08So that was kind of very much in Spielberg's wheelhouse.
- 50:12I like that because you were annoyed, I I suggested you might
- 50:15not have heard of Point Break. Now you're telling the audience,
- 50:17maybe you've heard of Toy Story 2.
- 50:20It's only got like a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 50:23OK, if it had 100 then I'd. Assume you've seen it.
- 50:26Now back to these much more popular film Dick Tracy.
- 50:29DT1990 yeah, yeah. So again, the visual aesthetic
- 50:37of the film, super consistent. They, the film makers knew that
- 50:40going in, they had a lot of like kind of strict rules about
- 50:44making the movie. There's a lot of like miniatures
- 50:49and matte paintings and like bright primary colors.
- 50:54I believe there was like a sort of self-imposed rule that they
- 50:59only wanted to use like 7 colors in the movie because they're
- 51:04trying to like as directly as possible homage these old comic
- 51:08strips that had like limited resources.
- 51:11Right, right, because we're like a colored print newspaper strip.
- 51:15It probably had similar limitations or sorry, this might
- 51:18not have been a newspaper comic, but it and I know what you're
- 51:21saying though, like a short like nickel comic line thing that
- 51:23they would do at the time. I could have been in the
- 51:26newspaper, I don't know. I wasn't alive in the 1940s, so
- 51:28I don't really know. What was going on?
- 51:31I feel like we need somebody older than to talk about the
- 51:34film. We would know.
- 51:36I'm unqualified. I wasn't even alive in 1990 when
- 51:41the movie came out, but the the cinematographer also mentioned
- 51:46if you didn't even want to move the camera, like every shot is
- 51:51static. There's like no camera movement
- 51:54throughout the film because. No, it just sounds like he's
- 51:56trying to get out of doing work. He was just like boss.
- 51:58I think for the sake of the film, we don't even turn the
- 52:00cameras on because. Shoot it wide and I'll be over
- 52:04there. I'll be in my trailer, which I'm
- 52:06not going to leave because I don't think Dick Tracy would
- 52:09want me to. I don't think that's what they
- 52:10would have done in the there wasn't a cinematographer in the
- 52:13comics. So I mean, what do you want me
- 52:14to do? Paycheck still very real, but
- 52:17everything else I don't think we should do.
- 52:21Like no funny business. Anyway, sorry, let's continue.
- 52:27No. No, that's that's exactly
- 52:29that's. It's weird that you knew that.
- 52:30That's how that conversation. Went it's like this worked on
- 52:33Spielberg. He made the movie, just nobody
- 52:35saw it because we didn't turn the cameras on.
- 52:36Didn't turn the cameras on. It was very avant-garde.
- 52:39It was extremely cinematic. You would have loved it if you
- 52:44could have seen it. If you could have seen it, OK,
- 52:48So very, very faithful, very, very like self-imposed
- 52:52restrictions in order to make it feel more authentic.
- 52:54Do you think that all of that effort was worthwhile or just
- 52:58kind of like unnecessary? I mean, I think it was
- 53:04worthwhile. I I think this film has some
- 53:08things going for it. It it has.
- 53:10I said I was going to compare it to The Shadow.
- 53:13The Shadow was a confusing mess. For the most part.
- 53:16This movie is is very well structured it it has it's very
- 53:21easy to follow. It has a script that works in a
- 53:28very traditional three act structure, which like it is
- 53:33oddly high praise I guess especially given the last movie
- 53:36we talked about. This whole season, that's high
- 53:39praise having like a good seriously structure.
- 53:42Yeah, movies are bad actually, is my main conclusion.
- 53:46Turns out, yeah, unfortunately, but yeah, this one, no, I was
- 53:51like, OK, this is great. This is like I, I'm following
- 53:54who these characters are. They're like motivations.
- 53:57The story is moving at a good pace, but it has this overall
- 54:00visual aesthetic that kind of puts it in its own category, its
- 54:05own world. I guess it would be similar to
- 54:08like a Sin City like it was that mostly black and white film.
- 54:15That used like. Some like I think the only color
- 54:19that they would use would be red or something like.
- 54:21That you're think I'll tell you what you're thinking of
- 54:23Schindler's List. Oh, Schindler's List.
- 54:25That's right. That's.
- 54:27Oh yeah, that's such a fun movie.
- 54:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the real double feature.
- 54:31Tank Girl and that. Yeah.
- 54:34No, no, no, yes. Sin City from the 2000s.
- 54:37Actually, they told Steven Spielberg to make Dick Tracy and
- 54:39he made Schindler's List. No like that.
- 54:42He was like 7 colors. How about 1?
- 54:45How about one? Turns out there was other stuff
- 54:47going on in the 40s. What an absurd wide reaching
- 54:56implication. Spielberg was doing research for
- 55:01Dick Tracy that he was making without a camera and then
- 55:03accident to World War 2 and was like wait a minute.
- 55:09This doesn't look good. Guys did.
- 55:10You know. About this.
- 55:11In the 40s were not all good. Yeah, yeah, that's that watch
- 55:20that he's talking about selling at the end.
- 55:21That was a communicator watch. He's like, do you know I could
- 55:24have saved more? Oh, such a specific poll for
- 55:32children talking about the watch.
- 55:41Liam Neeson, they're earning his Academy Award nomination.
- 55:45Just going like I could have sold this communicator.
- 55:48For. 50 more young ones to get them out of German, More young
- 55:53legs. That's good that you brought it.
- 55:58You brought it one step further. I thought we were done.
- 56:00I thought we were done. But this keeps going.
- 56:06I was going to say because they parody that scene in Seinfeld
- 56:09specifically too. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 56:13I won't get into it. We don't need to get.
- 56:14Into the Seinfeld. Reference.
- 56:15But series of asides. But it's very funny to me.
- 56:21We'll bring it back. We'll bring it back to OK.
- 56:23So. Downtown Dick Tracy.
- 56:26Downtown Dick. Tracy OK, what is the is it?
- 56:30Is the film structured as a detective mystery?
- 56:33Is he trying to like, find somebody?
- 56:35I assume so, yeah, He's he's no, he's trying to.
- 56:44He's trying to bring down the mob.
- 56:47OK, OK. And his main antagonist in this
- 56:52film is played by Al Pacino. And it is Al Pacino in, again,
- 56:59ridiculous prosthetics. And he is giving the most over
- 57:04the top, like hammy performance. And at first I'm like, Oh my
- 57:10gosh, this is so embarrassing. Like, what are you doing?
- 57:13Like, I'm like, I thought your I thought your career took a
- 57:15downturn way later than this, Al.
- 57:18But. But as the movie goes on, I'm
- 57:21like, no, you know what? Actually, he's killing this.
- 57:24He's killing this. He's doing this exactly right.
- 57:27And turns out he was nominated for an Academy Award for this
- 57:32role for. Tracy.
- 57:34For Dick Tracy, man downtown Dick he was.
- 57:39That's not it. That's not what I call.
- 57:43It is. It is, as it turns out.
- 57:46Downtown Dicky T. Yeah, they just keep changing it
- 57:52throughout the. Movie changing every time.
- 57:54So he was, I assume, best supporting Actor nomination for
- 57:57Al Pacino. Supporting.
- 57:58Actor. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:00That's. Crazy.
- 58:01Yeah. And what's crazier, this movie,
- 58:04the cast is, I feel like I always get into this.
- 58:07I always get hung up on the cast, but it's interesting to
- 58:09me. It's fun.
- 58:09There's a lot of recognizable faces here.
- 58:13The rest of this, the rest of the cast of this movie is great
- 58:15too. Like he, he's giving a great
- 58:19over the top performance. Madonna is in this film and she
- 58:24actually gives a wonderful blah blah blah a wonderful
- 58:28performance. That's a tongue tied.
- 58:32I mean, that's not even the only one.
- 58:35Isn't Madonna in A League of Their Own?
- 58:37I. Think she is?
- 58:38She's good, I. Think Madonna's a good actor?
- 58:40Yeah, I think she was in Schindler's List too.
- 58:44No, I found the Madonna dance number in the middle of
- 58:48Schindler's List to be very ill placed.
- 58:50It's a. Bit odd, should've gone at the
- 58:53beginning. It's like Tank Girl, but yeah,
- 58:58she even she there's like there was a lot of original music
- 59:01written for this movie and she performs several songs that I
- 59:04think one of the songs may have even won an Academy Award as
- 59:09well. So wow, this was a yeah, yeah,
- 59:13this this film high, high praise, high praise from the
- 59:17Academy for downtown DT. But it was.
- 59:22Downtown defensive tackle Dick Drake.
- 59:27He's just, he's just listening to the plays in his watch.
- 59:30You got to coach. Omaha, Omaha.
- 59:33Just like stop. Just stop doing that.
- 59:36Just stop. You're ruining everything.
- 59:39But there was also like James Caan was in this movie for like
- 59:462 seconds. It was like a cameo because he's
- 59:49in like 1 scene. He's one of the gangsters.
- 59:51I don't remember if he had like a nickname or anything, but he's
- 59:55in the movie, he has like 2 lines and then he just explodes
- 59:59and I was like great, that's a rap on James.
- 1:00:02That's a rap on Mexican. Your Academy Award is in the
- 1:00:05mail. Yeah.
- 1:00:07Exactly. Speaking of, Dustin Hoffman is
- 1:00:10in this movie also giving a like really stupid performance.
- 1:00:15Not not stupid in a good way. Like Al Pacino's comes like all
- 1:00:18the way back around to being good.
- 1:00:19Dustin Hoffman's is kind of just stupid.
- 1:00:21Can I say that despite having no reason to think so, I I don't
- 1:00:27like Dustin Hoffman as an actor overall.
- 1:00:29This guy has won so many Academy Awards and has been in so many
- 1:00:33acclaimed roles, but he was also in Sphere and I feel like that's
- 1:00:37the real man. I feel like Sphere Hoffman is
- 1:00:39the real Hoffman, and that's all I can see now when I hear his
- 1:00:42name. Oh, I forgot about Sphere
- 1:00:44Hoffman. Yeah, we also had two, two
- 1:00:49people who I would have would have been very excited to see,
- 1:00:51but I completely missed them in the movie.
- 1:00:52I didn't even know they were there.
- 1:00:54The late great Catherine O'Hara was in this movie.
- 1:00:57Didn't see her, don't know where she was, but she was apparently
- 1:01:00in the movie. I think she might have been in
- 1:01:03that same scene with James Caan. I think it might have been like
- 1:01:05a sort of intentional cameo. And just like a like a group of
- 1:01:10cameos just for one scene. Yeah, possibly, but I really
- 1:01:15could not tell you. That's my only guess as to where
- 1:01:17she would have appeared in the movie.
- 1:01:19Calm. Meany who, dude?
- 1:01:23Dude, I swear, I swear to God, I was going to say when you
- 1:01:26started saying like people I thought was in the movie, I was
- 1:01:28like, well, it's Chief O'Brien in this movie.
- 1:01:30Chief O'Brien isn't. This, I was going to guess Chief
- 1:01:32O'Brien, if you've given me one guess, I want to say because
- 1:01:35because he's been in other movies as like a gangster guy.
- 1:01:38He was in some Nick Nolte movie as just like a rando gangster
- 1:01:42guy. And so that was my first
- 1:01:43thought. I can't believe that was.
- 1:01:44Right. But I also missed him.
- 1:01:48I could not tell you where he was in this movie.
- 1:01:51I would have like, and I don't know if him and Catherine O'Hara
- 1:01:54maybe were also in like heavy prosthetic and you just wouldn't
- 1:01:57have even recognized them. I think in his case it wouldn't
- 1:02:00have been like as a cameo. He was probably just a working
- 1:02:02actor who. Because yeah, 1990, I mean,
- 1:02:05that's that's probably not long before he got on Next
- 1:02:07Generation. That's two Star Trek references
- 1:02:11in one episode. We're we're doing great.
- 1:02:14Yeah, that's, I mean we're almost at the minimum we we got.
- 1:02:20Almost in our quota, yeah. Duh, that's.
- 1:02:24Crazy. No one's going to believe me,
- 1:02:25but I swear it was in my head while you were saying people who
- 1:02:27showed up in the movie and I was like Cole Meanie, Chief O'Brien.
- 1:02:30Obviously that's what I would have expected.
- 1:02:32Yeah, DS9. Come on.
- 1:02:36Yeah, last one too. Dick Van Dyke was in this movie,
- 1:02:39which that's just fun. You know, He's also, he's
- 1:02:42unfortunately very underutilized.
- 1:02:45He's like the District Attorney, I think.
- 1:02:47And he's kind of, you know, he's he's he's Harvey Dent.
- 1:02:51We get Dick Van Harvey Dent. Dick Van 2 faced.
- 1:02:54Dick Van 2 faced Dent and he this is just another like behind
- 1:03:00the scenes thing. There's there's a scene he's
- 1:03:03only really in a couple scenes, but he gets killed by like Al
- 1:03:06Pacino and the gang like halfway through.
- 1:03:09And I remember thinking this when I watched the scene, like
- 1:03:12they shoot it wide because again, the DP was in his trailer
- 1:03:15so. He did not want to go there.
- 1:03:17He turned the camera on and he they were like, how's the
- 1:03:19exposure? And he was like, I'm getting a
- 1:03:20lot of exposure. I'm working on Dick Tracy.
- 1:03:22And then he left. He's great crafty could be
- 1:03:25better, but you know, we'll talk.
- 1:03:30He's so this this scene is shot wide and they just they like
- 1:03:34shoot Dick Van Dyke and he takes like a bump.
- 1:03:37He like dives backwards basically and you see the whole
- 1:03:41thing. It's clearly him and and I
- 1:03:43remember watching it and I'm like, that looks like it really
- 1:03:45hurt actually, because there's no like crash pad or anything
- 1:03:49behind him. You know, he just like jumps
- 1:03:51backwards. I think there's like a desk and
- 1:03:53like a bed or something. And I was like, oh, that looked,
- 1:03:58I mean, good for you Dick that, that looked rough.
- 1:04:00And then I found out, like reading afterwards that he broke
- 1:04:02his shoulder and doing that scene and I was like, wow, that
- 1:04:07is commitment. Did you do you relate to that
- 1:04:11scene as someone who just recently dislocated their own?
- 1:04:13Shoulder, I was going to say, yeah, I mean, can't relate at
- 1:04:17all. It's not like my arm is
- 1:04:18currently in a sling as we speak.
- 1:04:20Just like me. For real.
- 1:04:21For real. Just like me, yeah I'm working
- 1:04:24hurt but my boss here made me come in anyway.
- 1:04:27I. Was like listen no days off
- 1:04:28except for me I took like 2 weeks off to go on vacation but
- 1:04:31other than that no days off. Said get your broke arm ass in
- 1:04:34here and. Get down here and tell me
- 1:04:38everything I want to know about Darkwing Dick Tracy.
- 1:04:41Darkwing. Dick Tracy.
- 1:04:43Yeah. What else do you want to know?
- 1:04:45I. Mean yeah, I'm sold.
- 1:04:46This movie sounds so much more fun.
- 1:04:48I hope that this has been the levity for the audience that has
- 1:04:50been for me. After talking about Tank Girl
- 1:04:52for 40 minutes, this one sounds fun and nice.
- 1:04:57Just just a good time. Yeah, I I won't even get too
- 1:05:01much into the plot because it is pretty standard.
- 1:05:04There's a fun reveal, I will say.
- 1:05:08I mean, if you don't, if you don't mind me just spoiling the.
- 1:05:11Whole lot of the film people, we've given them enough.
- 1:05:13You can always skip ahead if you don't want to hear spoilers.
- 1:05:15Totally, Yeah. So there's an interesting, I
- 1:05:19guess, element that the film's really standard back and forth.
- 1:05:24Dick Tracy's trying to catch the bad guy Al Pacino, but there's
- 1:05:27like this kind of third character who's serving as like
- 1:05:32a secondary antagonist who's like sometimes helping Dick
- 1:05:34Tracy, sometimes helping out Pacino.
- 1:05:36And it's like, this is actually kind of an interesting character
- 1:05:38cuz I don't know what the heck they're up to, you know?
- 1:05:41And there it's the character is no face cuz again, crazy
- 1:05:46prosthetics out of everyone. This is just somebody who looks
- 1:05:49like looks like Rorschach from Watchmen, just without the the
- 1:05:53Rorschach part, you know? Well, it's like a question.
- 1:05:55The original decent character that was who was because
- 1:05:59Watchmen was going to have question and then they couldn't
- 1:06:01get him so they made Rorschach. Fun fact.
- 1:06:03That is a really fun fact. Thank you.
- 1:06:07Had a lot of fun. It's like a roller coaster a
- 1:06:10little bit. But yeah, so this character is
- 1:06:13running around and it's revealed at the end of the movie that
- 1:06:18that character is Madonna. It's the it's the other
- 1:06:22character. She was playing.
- 1:06:22She was playing like a singer in the movie who was kind of being
- 1:06:25like held captive almost by Al Pacino.
- 1:06:28And she was like this sort of femme fatale type character for
- 1:06:32Dick Tracy. Because he he's, he has a
- 1:06:37girlfriend in the movie who like kind of a running gag is that
- 1:06:40he's trying to like propose to her throughout the whole movie.
- 1:06:42But he like, you know, he's super brave in the face of
- 1:06:45danger, but he's not brave enough to like, admit his
- 1:06:47feelings for her. And, you know, there's some
- 1:06:50tension between them because like, Madonna kisses him at one
- 1:06:53point, she sees it and she tries to leave town.
- 1:06:55And, you know, but yeah, it was like, it was like a fun reveal.
- 1:06:58And again, I was reading, there's a lot of interesting,
- 1:07:02like I enjoyed watching the movie.
- 1:07:04And then there's a lot of interesting reading afterwards
- 1:07:07about kind of how the movie came together and what happened
- 1:07:10afterwards. And there was a fun bit where
- 1:07:14this movie, much like The Shadow, both came after the
- 1:07:19first live action Batman, the first Tim Burton Batman movie.
- 1:07:23This, this movie, I think is the third movie you've had me watch
- 1:07:28this season that Danny Elfman did the score for it.
- 1:07:31Really. Because he did.
- 1:07:33Which ones? I think he did super girl the
- 1:07:35Shadow in this one. Well, there you go.
- 1:07:38And in in the case of maybe all of them question mark, I think
- 1:07:43they all, he got hired on all of those movies because of what he
- 1:07:45did for Batman. Well, Supergirl came first,
- 1:07:48right? Supergirl was 84.
- 1:07:50Yeah, Yeah, totally. Yeah.
- 1:07:52He might have gotten Batman because of Supergirl.
- 1:07:54I don't know. That's true.
- 1:07:55That's true. Yeah.
- 1:07:56But he's he's very much in this like realm of like superhero
- 1:08:00movies, but I mean, in Shadow and this it's like he just copy
- 1:08:04and pasted like he was in his trailer with the DP, like he was
- 1:08:07just like whatever. Leave.
- 1:08:09You only get one trailer, Yeah. It's weird, it's really small in
- 1:08:13here. It's like a torture tube.
- 1:08:17Now OK Danny Elfman music, I mean even copy pasted Elfman
- 1:08:23scores got to be great. Yeah.
- 1:08:25No, it was. It was great.
- 1:08:26It definitely set the tone that they were going for.
- 1:08:30But I'm sorry, I was, I got sidetracked from the the earlier
- 1:08:33point. I was trying to make the the
- 1:08:35movie, much like the Shadow was they was a heavy, heavy
- 1:08:39marketing push for it. You know, they wanted to make
- 1:08:42like a bunch of action figures and market towards kids and
- 1:08:44stuff like that. And I guess an interesting thing
- 1:08:47was they released an action figure of no face, but you could
- 1:08:53like take the mask off and it showed that it was Madonna.
- 1:08:56So it was like, and these toys came out before the movie, so
- 1:08:59it's like a big spoiler for the movie.
- 1:09:01And so those toys because of that were like pulled off
- 1:09:05shelves like almost right away. And now they've become like a
- 1:09:08really rare collector's item because they were only sold
- 1:09:13briefly and then pulled from the shelves.
- 1:09:16So it's like some of them are out there and it's so it's not
- 1:09:18rare if you can get like a no face Madonna action figure.
- 1:09:22That is really specific. I like that.
- 1:09:25Isn't that cool? That's just kind of a neat
- 1:09:26little thing. Couple other things that I'll
- 1:09:29highlight here. This was the last known use of
- 1:09:39yellow screen, as opposed to blue or green screen for visual
- 1:09:43effects in a movie, which was a process I was not familiar with.
- 1:09:47It was yellow screen. Yeah.
- 1:09:50Yeah, it it was. So it's 1990.
- 1:09:54This is the last use of that as a way to superimpose images, you
- 1:09:59know, to kind of layer two things on top of each other.
- 1:10:02That's pretty ironic that you're trying to like, key out stuff
- 1:10:04from a Dick Tracy movie with a yellow screen.
- 1:10:07It's like be Honest Steve guys wearing all yellow all the time.
- 1:10:11Kind of a problem. Really didn't think this
- 1:10:12through. Wonder if the screen was blue
- 1:10:14and then that guy invented it right there on the spot.
- 1:10:17That's how he invented it, yeah. But yeah, that I thought that
- 1:10:22was interesting. This is also like notably like
- 1:10:24one of the last major studio blockbuster releases to feature
- 1:10:29no CGI effects. They had the the blue screen to
- 1:10:32superimpose to images, but there was no visual effects outside of
- 1:10:35that. And it was also the first studio
- 1:10:41film to use digital audio. So this is all very technical,
- 1:10:44but I just find it very interesting because it's like
- 1:10:48right at this precipice that we've talked about before in
- 1:10:51terms of like a change in studio production filmmaking.
- 1:10:56I'm trying to even, yeah, like I don't even know enough about
- 1:10:59sound to really have a good grasp of the difference between
- 1:11:01analog and digital audio recording.
- 1:11:04Like I could conceptualize that obviously they what it would
- 1:11:07turn into, but I'm like, what is analog audio recording?
- 1:11:10What did that get recorded to Tapes?
- 1:11:15Just one of those, one of those like monophone things where you
- 1:11:18got to like crank it, you know? Man, that's just a weird moment
- 1:11:22where I was like, I have no idea how any of that works.
- 1:11:26I'm not super familiar with like audio technology myself, but I
- 1:11:30was just reading up on, I believe it might have been
- 1:11:34talking to Danny Elfman actually.
- 1:11:36And he was talking about how much she hated digital audio and
- 1:11:40he hated the shift to what they were doing and how how it
- 1:11:43affected things like when you actually were watching the movie
- 1:11:46in the theater. So it's, it's like I said, very
- 1:11:49technical. But to me, I found it just
- 1:11:52really intriguing how like it was like the last and also the
- 1:11:56first of some things. And it was right when that kind
- 1:12:00of change was happening to everything really going digital
- 1:12:04and implementing these new production.
- 1:12:07Yeah, I mean, it does seem like the whole movie we, we kept
- 1:12:10joking about them, like imposing limitations.
- 1:12:12But if anything, that's the film makers like flexing their
- 1:12:16abilities to craft a very particular kind of image.
- 1:12:20Like you don't do that kind of thing unless you have kind of
- 1:12:22complete mastery over of all of it works, or else you just can't
- 1:12:25get by with those limitations. So I feel like it's a it's an
- 1:12:29impressive film on a technical level, in vain in many ways.
- 1:12:32Yeah, no, absolutely. It's just, I think it totally
- 1:12:35succeeded in what it set out to do, in having a very, very
- 1:12:40distinct visual style. It's it's like I said, it's
- 1:12:44like, what if the shadow was OK? What if?
- 1:12:46The Shadow. Doesn't not good, OK.
- 1:12:49Just OK, it's, it's, it's like it's, it's fine, you know, it's
- 1:12:54entertaining. It's kind of like standard, very
- 1:12:57boilerplate storytelling in a way.
- 1:12:59But it has that aesthetic that is unique and familiar because
- 1:13:05of all the other things I've mentioned where people have
- 1:13:07probably seen it before, and most famously in things like
- 1:13:10Batman. Yeah, it's like, especially
- 1:13:14given the first half of this episode tonight, I'm all down
- 1:13:17for boilerplate. Boilerplate is good.
- 1:13:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's it's exactly.
- 1:13:22I was like, I wasn't, you know, this will lead into my score for
- 1:13:25the movie, but I was like, I feel somewhat indifferent about
- 1:13:29this, but I'm not mad. This.
- 1:13:30Is just a movie this is just a movie going experience I can I
- 1:13:34can eat my popcorn it's. OK, popcorn, because you're not
- 1:13:37busy having a cow. Last thing I'll say that I that
- 1:13:43I liked reading about was also to promote this movie and this
- 1:13:49feels very this almost feels like how they would release like
- 1:13:54short films in conjunction with other things.
- 1:13:57This is sort of an old like theatrical release model.
- 1:14:01They made a new Roger Rabbit short like animated short To Air
- 1:14:08Like or to be screened exclusively before Dick Tracy if
- 1:14:12you want to go see the movie in theaters.
- 1:14:14Really, I was like, that's great, that doesn't play more.
- 1:14:17Roger Rabbit out there. If you play the movie on
- 1:14:20streaming, it doesn't include that part.
- 1:14:22No, no, no, no, no. I I I watched it.
- 1:14:24I on I think one of those services we have to rent it and
- 1:14:27that's not part of it at all. I I I, I think too, I remember
- 1:14:31reading there was like the whole media releases of this movie
- 1:14:35were very sparse. I don't I don't think it even
- 1:14:36came on the DVDI think you can find the short online, but
- 1:14:40you're not going to find it paired with I found a trailer I
- 1:14:44like. I went on YouTube and I found a
- 1:14:45trailer that was like because I typed in the name of that Roger
- 1:14:47Rabbit short and it was like a trailer for like, you know, see
- 1:14:51Dick Tracy and also exclusively see this Roger Rabbit like
- 1:14:55animated feature before. Yeah, that's fun.
- 1:14:59I do think that is a a lost art. Reminds me of the a lot of the
- 1:15:04like late 90s early 2000s Disney Pixar films had little animated
- 1:15:07shorts at the. Beginning.
- 1:15:08Yes, exactly. Yeah, it's exactly like that,
- 1:15:10yeah. It's such a cool little.
- 1:15:12Touch Like for instance, you might have heard of this movie
- 1:15:15called Toy Story 2. They did make a second one, I
- 1:15:19don't know if people knew that but there was 2 and maybe more.
- 1:15:22And maybe three more. OK, cool, I I'm sold on Dick
- 1:15:31Tracy. I might go watch it just to
- 1:15:33cheer myself up. Yeah, no, it's, I think you
- 1:15:36would like it. I I think you would enjoy it not
- 1:15:41be over the moon, but if yeah, exactly.
- 1:15:44If you need if you need something to cleanse your palate
- 1:15:46from tech girl, Dick Tracy would be perfect.
- 1:15:51Just a just a bit of DT when you're on the DL.
- 1:15:54Just yeah. What?
- 1:16:02OK, right, that was a fun conversation about Dick Tracy.
- 1:16:05Definitely pick me up after the first half of the show, which is
- 1:16:09bumming me out. So we now move into final scores
- 1:16:12and wrap up. And as a reminder for everybody,
- 1:16:14this is the last episode in our Forgotten Superheroes season.
- 1:16:17So after we give scores for these individual movie picks, we
- 1:16:20can see who cumulatively had the better picks and is the winner
- 1:16:24of the whole season. I mean, I'm, I'm optimistic, I
- 1:16:28feel like. Dude, Tank girl is sailing in 10
- 1:16:31out of 10 Tank girl. I guess I do have to start
- 1:16:35because I went first for the review.
- 1:16:37I don't know what to make of tank girl.
- 1:16:39Like, I can tell based on the original comic source material
- 1:16:45and what the director had said, that they were trying to make
- 1:16:47something that actually had kind of a message to it.
- 1:16:51And I think that that message was lost both because of the
- 1:16:54studio meddling that made them, like, soften the edges of only
- 1:16:57some of it and not the rest. But I also think that even if
- 1:17:00they made exactly what they wanted, it just would not have
- 1:17:02landed for a number of reasons. Like the tone of the movie was
- 1:17:07lopsided from the beginning and it was too like silly and cutesy
- 1:17:12at points to also have such like oddly disturbing imagery in it.
- 1:17:19Not like what was shown on screen was that disturbing, but
- 1:17:21just like conceptually upsetting material.
- 1:17:25And I just, I don't know, I think it was ill conceived.
- 1:17:28This is how I would describe the whole movie.
- 1:17:30Yeah. Oh, sure.
- 1:17:31Absolutely. I.
- 1:17:32Mean it. Sounded very dour.
- 1:17:35And I just felt bad watching it, like it was not ever fun.
- 1:17:40And it it almost felt worse that in the second-half they tried to
- 1:17:43like, pick up everything because once those goofy furries show
- 1:17:46up, they're acting all silly furries.
- 1:17:50There's a line in there I forgot to mention that I thought was a
- 1:17:52joke where they're talking to the rippers who are just these
- 1:17:57like goofy animal guys. And their lore is a little
- 1:18:00confusing because they imply that they were an experiment
- 1:18:02gone wrong where they tried to fuse humans with like animal
- 1:18:04DNA. But then they also all at one
- 1:18:06point say they have been reincarnated.
- 1:18:09So I'm like, were you dead bodies that they tried to fuse
- 1:18:11with animal DNA? Like, how does that work?
- 1:18:15But they asked him, like, what they used to do before the
- 1:18:17experiments. And then they turned to Ice T,
- 1:18:20who's like the grumpy one. And they're like, well, what did
- 1:18:22you used to be? And he said, I was a cop.
- 1:18:23I was like, is that a Law and Order joke?
- 1:18:26It turns out the movie came out before he started on Law and
- 1:18:29Order. So I was like, oh, that was just
- 1:18:30like a fortuitous joke. What fortuitous circumstance
- 1:18:34through this. Yeah, check out our unrecorded
- 1:18:4045 minute conversation this morning about the Pirates of the
- 1:18:43Caribbean movies for more on that.
- 1:18:44You see, we didn't record it because we were trying to be
- 1:18:49authentic to the original material, like Dick Tracy.
- 1:18:52Like, exactly like Steven. Steven Spielberg likes to do it,
- 1:18:55you know. Spielberg was in.
- 1:18:56He blocked the whole thing. And then he was like, all right,
- 1:18:58turn those cameras off and go home.
- 1:19:02That's how film. Making's done, so Tank Girl,
- 1:19:05like, I don't have good things to say, but I'm worried about
- 1:19:09being too harsh because I think the movie was going for
- 1:19:11something and I want to give it credit for that.
- 1:19:15Even so, Tank Girls, Tank Girls A2 out of 10, it's just totally
- 1:19:20Tank Girl bombed. Why are you excited about this?
- 1:19:29I don't know. I don't know why I did that.
- 1:19:31It was just such an unexpected 2.
- 1:19:34It's only the second time in this podcast that we've given
- 1:19:36something that low of a score, the other one being Hoffman's
- 1:19:40fear, which may be more frustrated than Tank Girl did
- 1:19:44because it was just like, so tedious to watch.
- 1:19:46But Tank Girl, I think just, like, should not be seen.
- 1:19:49I think we are worse off for it being here.
- 1:19:54Yeah, yeah, it's a big two. It's a big 2 / 2 two two.
- 1:19:59That's almost a one. Which is first place over to
- 1:20:02Dick Tracy? Oh, you're right.
- 1:20:04It's like golf scores. You just flip it backwards.
- 1:20:06Did we not mention we're doing golf scores?
- 1:20:08Golf scores this season. That's been my strategy,
- 1:20:10actually. So I've been recommending bad
- 1:20:13movies. All right, Yeah, over to you,
- 1:20:16Dick Tracy. I'm going to guess better than
- 1:20:18A2. Yeah, definitely, definitely
- 1:20:21better than A2. Dick Tracy was just a very movie
- 1:20:29movie. It was a it was a movie
- 1:20:32experience. You know what watching a movie
- 1:20:34is like? It was like that.
- 1:20:36I don't because I was watching Tank Girl but I would like to.
- 1:20:38I'm sorry. Yeah.
- 1:20:39Well, watch Dick Tracy and you'll kind of get a sense of
- 1:20:41what a movie is. I'm.
- 1:20:45I gave it A-77 for. Yeah.
- 1:20:49I mean, like, I may have kind of even undersold it because I
- 1:20:53didn't get too much into the story of the movie, but I think
- 1:20:57I gave you maybe a good idea that it it's a pretty standard
- 1:21:03narrative with a lot of stylistic flair and execution.
- 1:21:08And I I think maybe unlike Tank Girl, it knew what it wanted to
- 1:21:14be and it did that. So to me, very standard, like
- 1:21:20didn't love it, but definitely didn't hate it falls into that,
- 1:21:24you know, very middling range, which is like kind of between A6
- 1:21:28and A7. But I'm I'm going to give it a
- 1:21:30seven. It was it was a unique enough
- 1:21:31experience. Yeah.
- 1:21:33I feel like that is still high price.
- 1:21:36Like anything that to make a movie even remotely good is very
- 1:21:39difficult. So it's not like, you know,
- 1:21:42it's, it's demeaning, something to say like, yeah, it's a six,
- 1:21:45it's a 7. It's like, no, that's pretty
- 1:21:46good, yeah. I, I would watch Dick Tracy
- 1:21:50again. So I feel like that, you know,
- 1:21:52that's says a lot, I think, yeah.
- 1:21:56And I do like, I love that about this show.
- 1:21:58Is that because of it, we're both watching stuff all the time
- 1:22:01that we would never sit down for otherwise just because we didn't
- 1:22:06know about it or like, it doesn't draw enough attention to
- 1:22:09like, compel us to put it on. But at this point, we've talked
- 1:22:12about like 30 movies between the two of us in these long form
- 1:22:14reviews. And I'm like happy to have seen
- 1:22:16all of them except for Sphere and Tank Girl.
- 1:22:23Sphere. Sphere was worse though, right?
- 1:22:25I mean. Sphere was worse because it was
- 1:22:28a similar thing where the movie just like didn't come together
- 1:22:30and was not finished. Tank Girl made me more upset but
- 1:22:36Sphere I think made me more angry.
- 1:22:39OK. That is, that is a distinction.
- 1:22:42Angry versus upset, sphere versus Tank Girl.
- 1:22:45It's going to be our like champion of champions match up
- 1:22:49down the road. It's just like, which would be
- 1:22:50worse? That would be fun at some point
- 1:22:53if we did like a bracketed tournament with all these
- 1:22:55movies, you know? That would be fun.
- 1:22:57We are always looking for for like side content because I
- 1:22:59think you and I have fun. We've seen so many movies that
- 1:23:02because of the premise of the show, we don't talk about.
- 1:23:04It's like movies we've never seen before.
- 1:23:07So I like finding other ways to to rope in other stuff.
- 1:23:10Yeah, I mean, check, check out our re Mem series.
- 1:23:13Check out RE MEM, but we're trying to get RE Mem going as an
- 1:23:16acronym so we don't have to say ranking every movie ever made
- 1:23:20every time it comes up. So check out REMEM 2 available
- 1:23:23now. We ranked eleven more films
- 1:23:25randomly drawn out of a hat. Pretty funny.
- 1:23:28I thought so. I thought so.
- 1:23:29Yeah. All right, Frank, that brings us
- 1:23:32to the end of this episode of Meet Your Double Feature.
- 1:23:34But it's also the end of the season.
- 1:23:36We have done 6 episodes now talking about forgotten
- 1:23:39superhero films. And Are you ready to find out
- 1:23:42who won the season overall? Oh man, you know, I mean like I
- 1:23:47got my acceptance speech ready. I want to.
- 1:23:50Thank your nominees are Al Pacino.
- 1:23:53Al Pacino, best supporting actor for playing goofy mobster guy
- 1:23:57whose name I don't remember in the movie.
- 1:24:01I want to thank him. You're.
- 1:24:04Giving up thanks while they're naming the nominees.
- 1:24:07I'm like up on stage. It's like overlap.
- 1:24:11They're playing the music too, to try and play me off.
- 1:24:14While they're still naming the nominees, they're.
- 1:24:16Like trying to play clips from the movies and they're like,
- 1:24:17this is a great scene that got up there right now.
- 1:24:19I should really check it out. I like that one.
- 1:24:21I haven't seen this movie but that was pretty good.
- 1:24:25Who's this guy in the front row? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:27What's he want? What's his deal?
- 1:24:29You don't recognize Al Pacino because he doesn't have.
- 1:24:32The make up on him, yeah. All right, well, not to
- 1:24:36disappoint you, but because I won today's episode for having
- 1:24:40picked the movie that got the higher score, I also held on to
- 1:24:43my lead for season 2. So after six episodes, 6 films,
- 1:24:47each movies you selected Frank had a total score of 25, which
- 1:24:52means on average they were getting less than a 5 out of 10.
- 1:24:57Which is not our fault, all right?
- 1:24:59We don't need your math in here. OK?
- 1:25:01This is a movie review show. That's a good point.
- 1:25:04None of us were good at STEM. My movies got a combined total
- 1:25:08of 33, so it was actually really close until this episode.
- 1:25:11We had quite a quite a stratification here because Dick
- 1:25:14Tracy was better than even I thought it would have turned
- 1:25:16out. Look, leave Trish Stratus out of
- 1:25:19this too. OK, boy.
- 1:25:24OK, so I listen. I don't feel good about it.
- 1:25:28I don't feel good about the fact that I won by kind of a
- 1:25:31landslide this time, especially because we didn't set up prizes.
- 1:25:35Yeah, that's true. I, one of my friends who's been
- 1:25:39listening to the show, he texted me recently and he was like, he
- 1:25:43texted me and he was like, when are you going to watch the
- 1:25:45prophecy movies? And I was like, oh Dang,
- 1:25:48somebody's holding me accountable to that Season 1
- 1:25:50wager that we made. Yeah, that if you weren't
- 1:25:53listening, then at the end of Season 1 we said that whoever
- 1:25:56lost had to watch the other 4 direct to video prophecy films.
- 1:26:01And Frank, that is on you. But we haven't really done it
- 1:26:04yet because we're trying to find a way to make it into content
- 1:26:06that's not just me being like and then what happened and then
- 1:26:08what happened. So I think I've got ideas for
- 1:26:13that, which it'll come out later.
- 1:26:16We haven't forgotten about it. But to be honest, there's not
- 1:26:18enough people holding this accountable, so I don't feel a
- 1:26:20big hurry. We.
- 1:26:23Will get there, yeah. Let us know in the comments if
- 1:26:25you're really waiting to hear about Prophecy 2 through 5.
- 1:26:29It's important lore for the show.
- 1:26:31And we will, we will come back to it.
- 1:26:32It's like, it's like one piece. You just got to wait like 20
- 1:26:35years for it to come back around.
- 1:26:37Yeah. Takes 20 years and at the end
- 1:26:39you're like, I guess we're so back.
- 1:26:41I don't know if we're back. I've forgotten where we were I.
- 1:26:44Don't know if anybody wanted this in the 1st place, but here
- 1:26:47we are. OK, well that wraps us up for
- 1:26:50Season 2. We have not yet announced the
- 1:26:53premise for season 3 and part of the reason is because we have
- 1:26:56not finalized the premise for season 3.
- 1:26:59So this is a good chance I haven't even thought.
- 1:27:01Well OK, I've thought about it, but.
- 1:27:05I, I just show up. I just do what he tells me to.
- 1:27:07Frank shows up, turns the camera off and goes back to his
- 1:27:09trailer. That's what we're an audio only
- 1:27:11show. So I think what we'll do, we
- 1:27:13have some supplemental content coming out in our next pair of
- 1:27:16episodes. We have another ranking.
- 1:27:18Every movie ever made. Another remem coming up soon as
- 1:27:21well as a new bonus series that I want to kick off that Frank
- 1:27:25you and I are going to record soon.
- 1:27:27I'll say right now it has something to do with a childhood
- 1:27:30favorite film of ours. What are the live action?
- 1:27:33No, we're going to be doing a special episode about the live
- 1:27:41action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies because we've
- 1:27:44seen them 600 times and I had an I had an angle to talk about
- 1:27:47those from. So we're going to come out with
- 1:27:48that soon, and then probably in another month and 1/2 or so,
- 1:27:52we'll start Season 3. And what that means is that you,
- 1:27:55the audience, can help us decide what our premise is for the next
- 1:27:58season. So if you've been listening
- 1:27:59along, you have an idea, a type of film you want us to talk
- 1:28:02about, let us know. Leave it in the comments.
- 1:28:04Text Frank directly, whatever you need to do.
- 1:28:06I'm going to put his phone number on screen now.
- 1:28:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Throw that up there.
- 1:28:13Make a part of the animated sequence that we'll.
- 1:28:15Have Oh, that's right. We have to have an animated
- 1:28:16sequence to end the movie. Oh boy.
- 1:28:20Or not in the movie, in the podcast.
- 1:28:21Yeah. So now we're going to do 5
- 1:28:22minutes of our animated podcast outro.
- 1:28:26And if you don't happen to see it.
- 1:28:29It's on you. It's on you, I'm going to say.
- 1:28:31You got to believe, all right? It's like Tinkerbell and.
- 1:28:33Peter, clap kind of clap. Do believe in fairies.
- 1:28:38OK, Frank, any, any closing thoughts about our superhero
- 1:28:42season? It didn't go the way I thought
- 1:28:44it would. It was really interesting that,
- 1:28:50I mean, I guess, I guess I mean that in a good way too, because
- 1:28:54we watched movies. I think they all fit that
- 1:28:57criteria, which was kind of a big thing for at this at the
- 1:29:00beginning. Like it's got to be a superhero
- 1:29:02movie of some kind, or at least a comic book movie, That girl.
- 1:29:08But I feel like we watched a really interesting variety,
- 1:29:11which is almost like, or I should say always the most
- 1:29:14important thing to me. I, I liked our first season a
- 1:29:17lot because we were talking about 90s movies and that was
- 1:29:19such a big pool to pull from. And I feel like we made this
- 1:29:23season shorter because we had a narrower focus of what types of
- 1:29:26movies we were going to talk about.
- 1:29:27But it still got us a good spread of of different things.
- 1:29:31So we talked about, I liked that some international films we got
- 1:29:33to rope in some of our background in stuff like Power
- 1:29:36Rangers, talking about tokasatsu films.
- 1:29:38We talked about the, like, noir characters, a couple of, like,
- 1:29:41regular superheroes, like Supergirl.
- 1:29:43I think it was fun, yeah. Totally.
- 1:29:46I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to next
- 1:29:48season. Once you tell me what that is,
- 1:29:49I'll be here. Figure out what it is going to
- 1:29:53be. As my arm heals, I'm sure he'll
- 1:29:56be. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:57Ready to play again? Put me in couch Yeah.
- 1:30:02Ranks injured reserve right now while we figure out Season 3 in
- 1:30:06the meantime. Defensive tackle Dick Tracy in
- 1:30:08my place. Defensive tackle Dick Tracy.
- 1:30:10That's right. It's not big enough.
- 1:30:12It's not big enough to be a TT. He's going to get bowled over.
- 1:30:14What a loser. A loser.
- 1:30:18Step on his dumb watch. OK, I'll do it for Season 2 of
- 1:30:26Meet Your Double Feature. Before we go, of course, if you

- 1:32:19watch Nate and Mariah in Venice independent feature film.
- 1:32:22Franco produced and was the cinematographer on he he turned
- 1:32:25the camera on. I did, I did remember to do
- 1:32:28that. There was no studio involvement
- 1:32:30in that one either, unless you know, you count us as, you know,
- 1:32:33the the studio, in which case we were very involved.
- 1:32:36So. Studio meddled in your own
- 1:32:38production. Yeah.
- 1:32:43All right. Well, that's exciting news.
- 1:32:45Thank you so much for joining us.
- 1:32:46And we will be back in two weeks.

- 1:33:01my child like innocence after hearing about Tank Girl.
- 1:33:18Coming up next, it's a new episode of ranking every movie
- 1:33:22ever made. Stay tuned for more, and thanks
- 1:33:25for listening to Meet Your Double Feature.
