- 0:00Speaker 1: We should start right off because I have some ideas.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Go ahead, Johnny, go ahead, because you had you guys
- 0:07Speaker 1: have to grind this. And I'm so excited that some
- 0:10Speaker 1: things occurred to me while I was watching this thing.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I love it when you come on, you know why,
- 0:15Speaker 1: because you come prepared. You're like, you're as prepared as
- 0:18Speaker 1: Donald and I You're like, you're wound up. I am.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Look going back and watching this, first of all, it's
- 0:26Speaker 1: hard not to feel really proud of it. Yeah, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: this one I thought deserved some backdrop because the one
- 0:33Speaker 1: last Week one fifteen is a spectacular episode. Zach. You're
- 0:37Speaker 1: particularly great in that episode with Sarah and then the
- 0:40Speaker 1: monologues with the shrink let the whole ensemble just shine.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And I busted my ass on those monologues because the
- 0:48Speaker 1: writing was astonished. And you notice there's no cuts. I mean,
- 0:52Speaker 1: we were clearly all told that they'd be wonders. Yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: they were, especially since Donald knew it, So we were
- 0:59Speaker 1: clearly all hold that there would be no cuts. But
- 1:02Speaker 1: what I thought was really interesting and maybe interesting for
- 1:05Speaker 1: people listening is a little bit of context. And what
- 1:09Speaker 1: I mean is because in this episode it became clear
- 1:13Speaker 1: to me just how gelled the ensemble is. Whether it's
- 1:17Speaker 1: Kenny and Judy, You and me, Zaki, Donald and Sarah,
- 1:21Speaker 1: the thing is just water tight. And the reason is
- 1:26Speaker 1: because I think now, as we discussed already, nine to
- 1:28Speaker 1: eleven had already occurred. We're round about the middle of
- 1:31Speaker 1: December here, and so what happened in New York, which
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'll circle this back, was the New York Yankees lost
- 1:40Speaker 1: the World Series in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And the only reason that's relevant is because they lost.
- 1:47Speaker 1: There was no ticker tape parade in New York City,
- 1:51Speaker 1: so we were invited to the Thanksgiving Parade in New
- 1:55Speaker 1: York City, and it was the first taste of real
- 1:59Speaker 1: rock star for all of us because we worked till
- 2:01Speaker 1: Wednesday night, till about nine twenty five, and this was
- 2:05Speaker 1: a week or two before this episode, and then we
- 2:08Speaker 1: were whisked off to Lax where we occupied the entire
- 2:13Speaker 1: front of first class. There was only one other person.
- 2:16Speaker 1: There were only one other, that's right, and it was
- 2:19Speaker 1: a boy band. It was like Otown or something like that.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We shared first class. It was the cast of Scrubs
- 2:26Speaker 1: and Otown. I remember. It might as well have been
- 2:28Speaker 1: a private plane. It wasn't. But it was first class.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It wasn't coach, it was first It wasn't business class,
- 2:33Speaker 1: it was first class. And we were going to New
- 2:35Speaker 1: York to participate in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Now, remember
- 2:39Speaker 1: there had been no mass gatherings allowed in New York
- 2:43Speaker 1: since that Tuesday morning in September. There's just wasn't allowed.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The Yankees were supposed to be there, but they weren't.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So we fly overnight, and you guys can chime in,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but we fly overnight, we go, we're deposited at some
- 2:56Speaker 1: chapel on the Upper West Side somewhere. We didn't even
- 2:58Speaker 1: go to the hotel. We just they dropped us off
- 3:01Speaker 1: at the freaking parade. Yeah, we were like lying on
- 3:04Speaker 1: the on the ground in the chapel toutely. Yeah. And
- 3:08Speaker 1: we got sideways on the plane. Yeah, sideways as you do.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And then we got up and Zachie, I think you
- 3:19Speaker 1: brought your nephew onto the float. Yeah, I did. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: it was a quasi racist kind of Pocahona's float. Um.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And they've gotten they've gotten rid of some of those
- 3:31Speaker 1: since then, I think, Yeah, But I absolutely I think, well,
- 3:34Speaker 1: here's the Scrubs cast and a quasi racist of Pocahona's
- 3:37Speaker 1: float on the upper west side in the staging area.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And who pulls up behind us but the Wiggles in
- 3:43Speaker 1: the big red car. Now, I had gone to Wiggles
- 3:47Speaker 1: concerts with my son every time they were in Los
- 3:50Speaker 1: Angeles for the last couple of years. I was eating, sleeping,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and drinking the Wiggles. So I got off the float
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I went back to the big Red car and
- 3:58Speaker 1: induced myself to Murray and Jeff and I introduced myself
- 4:00Speaker 1: to everybody, and I became friends with the Wiggles, and
- 4:04Speaker 1: I am to this day. You hang out with the
- 4:07Speaker 1: Wiggles still not really, but I did a video for
- 4:10Speaker 1: them and they became my friends. There. My memory started
- 4:14Speaker 1: interrupt one second, Johnny. My memory is that my nephew
- 4:17Speaker 1: was a very outspoken kid and not shy at all.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And I don't know how old he was, but he
- 4:23Speaker 1: was little, and we had to be like nine, dude,
- 4:26Speaker 1: no younger or younger younger. He was a little kid.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And so Al Roker we're off the flow at one point,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and Al Roker's interviewing us, and he goes and I'm
- 4:33Speaker 1: here with the cast of Scrubs and I've got Johnny
- 4:35Speaker 1: ce McGinley and Donald Fazon is going around introducing the
- 4:37Speaker 1: whole cast, and my neph end this is live television
- 4:41Speaker 1: and my nephew goes, what about me and Al Roker?
- 4:47Speaker 1: It's awkward, and Al Roker ignores him and starts so
- 4:50Speaker 1: tell us about the show. Guy interrupts him again, what
- 4:53Speaker 1: about me? And finally Al feels bad enough that he's like, oh,
- 5:00Speaker 1: young I'm sorry, young man, you're right, and what's your name?
- 5:02Speaker 1: And then he introduces himself. But I was like, it
- 5:04Speaker 1: was my first knee throwing gang signs too, Like he didn't.
- 5:09Speaker 1: He didn't, he didn't know any like real gang signs,
- 5:11Speaker 1: but he had seen on TV how how how rappers
- 5:14Speaker 1: and whomever throw gang signs. So we're on the float
- 5:17Speaker 1: and he's like throwing these like almost gang signs. When
- 5:22Speaker 1: I when I spoke to Al Roker after after he cut,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I said, how, how is this for a turnout? And
- 5:29Speaker 1: he said, this will be the largest turnout in the
- 5:31Speaker 1: history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. And I said,
- 5:33Speaker 1: we'll give me an estimate, and he said, there'll be
- 5:34Speaker 1: about three and a half million people here, and so
- 5:37Speaker 1: every time we went through an intersection, and I'll wrap
- 5:39Speaker 1: the story up in a minute, but every time we
- 5:41Speaker 1: went down an intersection, you could see it was one
- 5:44Speaker 1: hundred to two hundred people deep at every intersection. I've
- 5:48Speaker 1: never seen that many people. I never will in my life. Yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 1: it was. That was. I remember being like, wow, there
- 5:54Speaker 1: are so many people here, and we were on the
- 5:57Speaker 1: float and every You're right, every time we passed an
- 6:00Speaker 1: intersection it looked like it went so deep into the intersection.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I remember thinking, how are all of these people? It
- 6:07Speaker 1: was like sardines too, like they were packed together because
- 6:11Speaker 1: nobody had been allowed nobody had been allowed to gather
- 6:15Speaker 1: since that Tuesday. Another thing I remember is that my
- 6:17Speaker 1: nephew was on the float and he I thought, Oh,
- 6:20Speaker 1: this will be fun for him. He was bored in
- 6:22Speaker 1: thirty seconds, right, and I was like, oh, fuck, I
- 6:24Speaker 1: gotta take care of this kid for a whole parade. Yeah,
- 6:27Speaker 1: we had to. And it's all the way from Uptown,
- 6:29Speaker 1: all the way to Macon. Yeah, and he's throwing his
- 6:30Speaker 1: sack gang signs for a while and then he got
- 6:32Speaker 1: bored of that. And then there was like an upstairs
- 6:34Speaker 1: in the float. I don't know if it was like
- 6:36Speaker 1: it was like in Pocahonas's head or something. Well, no,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it was a multi tiered ship. Yeah, but even in
- 6:43Speaker 1: the in the non outside area, there was some spot
- 6:46Speaker 1: he found and then he went up there and he
- 6:48Speaker 1: found bubble rap and I was like, okay, fucking bubble
- 6:50Speaker 1: rap will entertain him for a little while. Then he
- 6:52Speaker 1: got over the bull. He was stopping on the bubble wrap,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and I was like, this is I'm never having kids,
- 6:57Speaker 1: this is like the worst. What about my My only
- 7:02Speaker 1: point bringing this up and I'll circle it back, was that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And also remember a couple of weeks earlier, actually about
- 7:09Speaker 1: a month earlier, we had been picked up for the
- 7:11Speaker 1: back nine, and we ran around the hospital with our
- 7:14Speaker 1: HUDs cut off, and so that meant you had paychecks
- 7:18Speaker 1: until May the first week of nine or so, because
- 7:22Speaker 1: in TV you only get paid for episodes produced, and
- 7:25Speaker 1: so they just you know, it just let's explain to
- 7:27Speaker 1: people who don't know the show was picked up for
- 7:30Speaker 1: the first thirteen episodes, and they kind of see how
- 7:33Speaker 1: you do in the ratings, and then if you do
- 7:36Speaker 1: well enough in the ratings, you get the rest of
- 7:37Speaker 1: the order, which which is in business talk is called
- 7:41Speaker 1: the back nine, meaning you get you get nine more episodes,
- 7:45Speaker 1: And we had been given that news about a month earlier,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and we ran around the hospital like we'd won the
- 7:49Speaker 1: Stanley Cuppers. I remember, yea. And my only point in
- 7:54Speaker 1: this is that between getting picked up and now about
- 7:56Speaker 1: fifteen or sixteen episodes into it, and I can see
- 7:59Speaker 1: it in this episode as we'll discuss, but the ensemble
- 8:03Speaker 1: is water tight, whether it meant going on a trip
- 8:06Speaker 1: together or getting picked up, people are starting to vibe
- 8:09Speaker 1: off each other. And it's as clear as day when
- 8:12Speaker 1: I was watching it, it's just what Donald and Sarah
- 8:15Speaker 1: are doing. As you guys know, I think the camera
- 8:18Speaker 1: is an X ray machine and it sees through all
- 8:20Speaker 1: the bullshit and what they're doing together there's zero bullshit.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And what Zach is doing at the end with Sarah
- 8:27Speaker 1: in that on that cot, there's no bullshit. It's it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: just tight and right. And I just got a chill.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It just it really got me. You gave me a
- 8:38Speaker 1: chill too, because I gotta tell you, I didn't remember
- 8:40Speaker 1: in that scene with Sarah what happened. I didn't know
- 8:42Speaker 1: if it was going to turn romantic. I didn't know
- 8:44Speaker 1: if I cried, I couldn't remember. And I was actually
- 8:48Speaker 1: moved by the two of us because nothing happens like
- 8:51Speaker 1: I agree, like I agree, like like you like would
- 8:55Speaker 1: happen in real life. You know, in the movies, we'd kiss.
- 8:57Speaker 1: In the movies, I break down and cry, But in
- 9:00Speaker 1: real life two friends might just sit there in silence
- 9:02Speaker 1: for a minute. And I just thought that was beautifully done.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think it's the real privilege of friendship when nothing
- 9:08Speaker 1: does happen, so that I don't have to demonstrate to
- 9:12Speaker 1: you anything and you don't have to demonstrate anything to me.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And real friendship is when stuff is allowed. And it's
- 9:18Speaker 1: a tricky verb to settle, and you guys let it
- 9:21Speaker 1: settle in front of the lens. And as we'll discuss
- 9:24Speaker 1: Will mackenzie, he just let the scene play and the
- 9:27Speaker 1: two actors. It's really lovely. And on a primetime comedy,
- 9:31Speaker 1: it's spectacular. It's spectacular. Should we start the show, Yeah,
- 9:36Speaker 1: but we should show. But I think Johnny, because of
- 9:38Speaker 1: that beautiful prologue, should should have the honor of counting
- 9:42Speaker 1: us into the song. Johnny Bleef seven eight stories about
- 9:47Speaker 1: show we made about a bunch of doctor nurses stories.
- 9:59Speaker 1: So da yeah, So I've been using this Scrubs wiki. Johnny,
- 10:12Speaker 1: that that is scrubs. I've heard you reference it. By
- 10:15Speaker 1: the way, you guys are killing this podcast. Were a
- 10:17Speaker 1: lot of Scrubs Wiki. Scrubs wiki is uh. If you
- 10:20Speaker 1: just put in um scrubs wiki into into the Google machine,
- 10:25Speaker 1: it brings you up this um this thing that I
- 10:28Speaker 1: guess multiple fans are. One fan has curated. It's on
- 10:31Speaker 1: a website called fandom dot com. I guess it's a
- 10:33Speaker 1: place where where fans can collect trivia and share stories,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and you know, it's a fan site. But someone, and
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'm thinking it might be one person, has put a
- 10:43Speaker 1: lot of work into this because every episode it has
- 10:45Speaker 1: the synopsis, it has recurring themes, it has guest stars,
- 10:48Speaker 1: it has the famous quotes, and it has trivia from
- 10:51Speaker 1: each episode. And today and I often referenced it, and
- 10:54Speaker 1: today I went to look at the trivia and the
- 10:56Speaker 1: first line of trivia it says, Hi, Zach exclamation point,
- 11:00Speaker 1: glad you're enjoying Scrubs. Wicky have me on the podcast
- 11:04Speaker 1: question mark, have Joelle searched for my email? So I've
- 11:10Speaker 1: been discovered by the curator of Scrubs Wicky as a
- 11:13Speaker 1: as an avid fan. But I will have Joel seek
- 11:16Speaker 1: you out and I and I have to tell you've
- 11:18Speaker 1: done a fantastic job because it's very useful. I can
- 11:20Speaker 1: find out all sorts of trivia. Like Kelso mentions Baxter
- 11:25Speaker 1: for the very first time in this episode, there's a
- 11:27Speaker 1: lot of trivia in here. There's a lot of interesting stuff.
- 11:30Speaker 1: So I think, Yeah, Joel says she's gonna track him down,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and this Felon knows a lot about Scrubs, so I
- 11:36Speaker 1: think it might be fun to have him all we can.
- 11:38Speaker 1: We can try and stump him. Well, let me get
- 11:40Speaker 1: to you at at at early on, at a minute
- 11:43Speaker 1: or two in you and Sarah in the batting cage,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you Zach, Yeah, why am I? Why is Jadi at
- 11:48Speaker 1: the at the batting kige? Yeah? I know. Well it's
- 11:50Speaker 1: as Donald was. Donald knows. No one says you don't
- 11:52Speaker 1: even play sports. There's no no one's ever said that
- 11:55Speaker 1: in the history of the English language. Which is great writing,
- 11:59Speaker 1: and you deliver like you really know sports. But I'm
- 12:01Speaker 1: not even Sarah in there. You redeem yourself from early
- 12:05Speaker 1: on when you get bricks dropped on your head and
- 12:07Speaker 1: you anticipated it. You don't anticipate the bean ball in
- 12:11Speaker 1: this and neither to Sarah. Yeah, well I gotta tell
- 12:15Speaker 1: you I committed. Yeah we did. I did not flinch.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I was not gonna let that happen again, Johnny from
- 12:19Speaker 1: that from happen again, and and and it's hard to,
- 12:23Speaker 1: you know, to anticipate, to not anticipate a softball being
- 12:27Speaker 1: thrown at your head. Well, you both did it, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: as a result, it's it's Charlie Chaplin funny. But why
- 12:34Speaker 1: is why is j D at the batting gage? He's
- 12:35Speaker 1: not even with turk like maybe one thing, maybe one
- 12:37Speaker 1: thing if he's a good turk like turk made me
- 12:39Speaker 1: come I'm alone at the batting gages. Yeah, neither one
- 12:41Speaker 1: of you played sports. Neither one of you played baseball.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Neither one of you in real life too, I know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: But dude, why I think Sarah Like in high school,
- 12:53Speaker 1: Sarah was like on the shot put team. Yeah, who
- 12:56Speaker 1: is on the shot But I've never heard Sarah talk
- 12:59Speaker 1: about a single sport, have you. Oh she's a good
- 13:02Speaker 1: snowboard right, yeah, yeah, yeah, she's Canadian. I think that's
- 13:06Speaker 1: a rule up there. You gotta be able to ski
- 13:08Speaker 1: or snowboard, but she um, yeah, I just didn't understand
- 13:12Speaker 1: that bit of writing. Mike Schwartz, we should say he
- 13:14Speaker 1: was the writer of this episode, along with as Johnny mentioned,
- 13:17Speaker 1: Will McKenzie, who is a concredible director and directed Everybody's
- 13:21Speaker 1: a Lot of People's favorite episode, the musical episode. Will
- 13:24Speaker 1: mackenzie is famous on set for the way he says acciden, yeah, yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and and cut. Yeah, dude, did you remember? Do you remember, Johnny?
- 13:35Speaker 1: He does cut, but he also does this, so Donald's
- 13:39Speaker 1: coming into the room. Yeah, he sums up the scene.
- 13:44Speaker 1: He's like, okay, and here comes Donald and he's mad
- 13:46Speaker 1: about what Carla just did. And action this is and cut.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I think he's he's directed a zillion sitcoms too. I
- 13:55Speaker 1: mean he was, he was, you know, he's a legendary
- 13:58Speaker 1: TV director. He is. I think he's retired, I imagine now,
- 14:01Speaker 1: but he is just a legend and a pretty good
- 14:04Speaker 1: tennis player, apparently very brilliant. Yeah that's what I heard.
- 14:08Speaker 1: That's what you heard. I heard. Will can make it
- 14:11Speaker 1: so you're running around while he's standing in one place.
- 14:14Speaker 1: There were a lot of directors that when you showed
- 14:16Speaker 1: up on set on Monday morning, you saw who it
- 14:18Speaker 1: was and you just had a big old smile on
- 14:21Speaker 1: your face. And Will mackenzie was always one of those
- 14:24Speaker 1: guys for all of us, we just would like he
- 14:26Speaker 1: was like, you know, he just just felt like a
- 14:28Speaker 1: grandfather figure because he was an older guy, but he
- 14:33Speaker 1: had so much experience and he had a big old
- 14:35Speaker 1: smile on his face and I just I love that guy.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Also in this in this episode, some of the I
- 14:41Speaker 1: don't know how to say this, some of the peripheral characters,
- 14:43Speaker 1: whether it's Sammy, which I'll get to in a minute,
- 14:46Speaker 1: or Neil as a janitor get to really shine. Yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and and the janitor and I guess I think one
- 14:55Speaker 1: h three when he says girl problems. Uh, and then
- 14:59Speaker 1: you say, and then Cox says, I'd say they're a
- 15:02Speaker 1: beak up and the button is at least they're real
- 15:06Speaker 1: laugh out, I'm steal and Zachie's laugh out loud. I did.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I laughed out loud at that man. And uh, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: because it's funny because you know, we keep fucking with
- 15:16Speaker 1: Bill Johnny because he's he's hanging on by his fingernails
- 15:19Speaker 1: to this old lord that the Janitor barely talked to
- 15:23Speaker 1: anybody in season one, and and he was just still
- 15:26Speaker 1: deciding by the time he started season two if he
- 15:28Speaker 1: was gonna make the Janitor solely a figment of Jad's imagination.
- 15:31Speaker 1: He's not still hanging on it is and me and
- 15:36Speaker 1: every episode the Janitors talking to a different cast, and
- 15:39Speaker 1: Donald and I. Donald and I joked that were like
- 15:41Speaker 1: detective as being like, well, how would Bill possibly rationalize
- 15:45Speaker 1: this one? And uh, you know again, Bill would say, well,
- 15:49Speaker 1: he's not interacting with Johnny. See, he just he just
- 15:51Speaker 1: if he's a if he's a figure of Jad's imagination,
- 15:53Speaker 1: he hears what Cox says and just builds on it,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know. But but also, I'm gonna keep circling back
- 15:59Speaker 1: with this, you could see. And in this case, it's
- 16:02Speaker 1: just a simple, clean scene. Donald and Zach at two
- 16:06Speaker 1: oh nine, when you take the phone call from your
- 16:07Speaker 1: mom and you find out about mister Peters, you two
- 16:10Speaker 1: are just it's in carpentry. It's called tongue in groove.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You guys are just effortless, And it sets up the
- 16:18Speaker 1: whole scene. There's a ton of narrow, expository stuff in it,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and it's just effortless and the And it's only because
- 16:28Speaker 1: of what you guys had become in those I guess
- 16:31Speaker 1: seventeen or eighteen weeks by then. Yeah, I remember, well,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I don't. I don't remember any of this episode except
- 16:37Speaker 1: for the handshake. And I had no idea even and
- 16:41Speaker 1: when we did the handshake, I had no clue what
- 16:43Speaker 1: Sarah and I like. I thought it was something that
- 16:45Speaker 1: Sarah and I made up on set and it turned
- 16:48Speaker 1: into something in the scene. But I think we made
- 16:52Speaker 1: it up for the scene and it turned into something
- 16:54Speaker 1: that we did on set. Yeah, we saw this handshake.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Johnny and I had to endure this handshake get longer
- 17:00Speaker 1: and longer. I think by the end of it. I
- 17:02Speaker 1: think by the end of nine years, it took them
- 17:04Speaker 1: an hour and a half to do the handshake, and
- 17:05Speaker 1: that was just to say hello to each other. Yeah.
- 17:08Speaker 1: During the Vietnam War, I found out it was called
- 17:11Speaker 1: a dap dapo up you adapt somebody, But wait now, Donald,
- 17:17Speaker 1: you don't remember if you guys were just fucking around
- 17:19Speaker 1: and made this up and then put it in the
- 17:20Speaker 1: show or it was I think it came from the
- 17:23Speaker 1: handshake in the show. I think our handshake we made
- 17:27Speaker 1: it up for the show, and then it turned into
- 17:30Speaker 1: something that we did all the time when we saw
- 17:32Speaker 1: each other. But that that, once again is what I'm
- 17:34Speaker 1: talking about. It's effortless. It doesn't did you us complete
- 17:39Speaker 1: with totally long and and then you guys throw it
- 17:42Speaker 1: away and go right into the scene and that that's
- 17:44Speaker 1: later on. But I was so struck by so many
- 17:49Speaker 1: of these vignettes. Yeah, completely tongue and groove. Yeah, I agree, man,
- 17:54Speaker 1: and and and and Donald. Did you make that up
- 17:57Speaker 1: or did Sarah contribute? Like it's pretty great some of it.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I made up a lot of it. I know I
- 18:03Speaker 1: made up because it's uh, it has it has rhythm
- 18:06Speaker 1: to it. That's why. Well there's that, and then there's
- 18:08Speaker 1: also that stuff. Yes you could there was. It was
- 18:13Speaker 1: also a like what is it that remember how we
- 18:16Speaker 1: were talking about the color purple and miss when Celia
- 18:20Speaker 1: and her sister are broken up and you're doing us
- 18:24Speaker 1: Patti kakeyah. So it also has a little bit of
- 18:28Speaker 1: that in it where it's like where we slap each
- 18:31Speaker 1: other's hand. I don't know, man, all I know is yeah, no,
- 18:35Speaker 1: that thing was made up for this episode and it
- 18:38Speaker 1: turned into I like, I like what Johnny said too
- 18:40Speaker 1: that you kind of go into the celabything and then
- 18:42Speaker 1: you just kind of go into the scene like nothing happened.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It's just you just did a high five. I thought that,
- 18:47Speaker 1: But it's the same way. It's the same way, and
- 18:49Speaker 1: I feel like, I'm maybe it sounds like I'm blown
- 18:52Speaker 1: too much smoke up your guy's asses, but I'll take it.
- 18:54Speaker 1: We'll take it. I'm like Donald, I don't remember any
- 18:56Speaker 1: of this stuff, so then I want to go back
- 18:58Speaker 1: and watch it. I'm I'm sincerely struck by different things.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And in this episode, unlike the last one we watched together,
- 19:07Speaker 1: I wasn't struck by as many things other than the
- 19:09Speaker 1: circumstances that were occurring outside of scrubs. In this I
- 19:13Speaker 1: was really struck by what was happening in front of
- 19:15Speaker 1: the lens and what the writers did. And then in
- 19:19Speaker 1: three minutes there's this great walking talk between Zachie and Cox,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and the writers let Cox be this fierce, fierce patient
- 19:27Speaker 1: advocate and it grounds him in a way that it's
- 19:31Speaker 1: just genius because it gives him license to then go
- 19:34Speaker 1: do what he's about to go do, which is destroy
- 19:37Speaker 1: a lab. Now, this is my first time we really
- 19:47Speaker 1: see Cox have this raw motion, Johnny, I think that
- 19:52Speaker 1: you know, we had seen him be upset. There's the
- 19:54Speaker 1: episode where he's where he's just saying, Jad, you need
- 19:57Speaker 1: to have a life. I have no fucking life. But
- 20:00Speaker 1: this is, you know, the first time we see how
- 20:02Speaker 1: much pain this man has and how dedicated he is
- 20:06Speaker 1: to his profession. So I just talked a bit about that,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and and of course destroying this lab. Pappard in the
- 20:13Speaker 1: background with Charles Pappard our steadicam operators back is the
- 20:18Speaker 1: one of the lab text. But I mean, do you
- 20:21Speaker 1: remember that day trashing that lab? That must have been cathartic.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I do, and I had I had been lucky enough
- 20:28Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety four, and lucky is in italics too.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Have been with Michael Caine, your actor in your Lovely
- 20:36Speaker 1: Movie up in Valdi's Alaska, and uh with Steven Seagal
- 20:42Speaker 1: directing an epic movie for Warner Brothers called on Deadly Ground.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Stephen was um and I got to destroy a house
- 20:51Speaker 1: and uh, halfway through it, I find a petrified walrus penis,
- 20:55Speaker 1: which is called an usk, and so well, slow down,
- 21:00Speaker 1: you're gonna you can't rush or you can't the listeners
- 21:03Speaker 1: that the listeners have questions, how did you find up?
- 21:08Speaker 1: Don't worry, We're gonna get back to destroying the lab. Everybody,
- 21:11Speaker 1: How did you How did you know that it was
- 21:13Speaker 1: a petrified Walter's penis? I asked, there's this long fallus
- 21:17Speaker 1: And I asked the production designer, I said, what's this?
- 21:19Speaker 1: And he goes, well, it's a petrified waters penis. And
- 21:21Speaker 1: he said, God old mighty, just call action and get
- 21:24Speaker 1: on my eyeline. If you don't think that's coming in
- 21:29Speaker 1: the frame, you're out of your mind. Look out, everybody.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And so I I what my takeaway from destroying a house, um,
- 21:39Speaker 1: just destroying it was go slow. If you destroy a
- 21:43Speaker 1: house or a lab too fast, the camera doesn't get it.
- 21:47Speaker 1: It's just like as Donald definitely knows, either taking or
- 21:50Speaker 1: throwing a punch in front of the lens. If you
- 21:52Speaker 1: go too fast, the camera doesn't see it. Yeah, And
- 21:55Speaker 1: it's the same same with destroying a room. You gotta
- 21:58Speaker 1: go slow. And it's funny Billy who or will ramped
- 22:03Speaker 1: it up to high speed for the throw through the window,
- 22:06Speaker 1: because otherwise that stuff happens too fast and you don't
- 22:10Speaker 1: get it. And I'm sure Zach. As a filmmaker, you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: unless you cover a fight or destroying something pretty meticulously,
- 22:20Speaker 1: the lens misses it. And so my only thought in
- 22:23Speaker 1: destroying that lab was take your time. Yeah. Well, when
- 22:26Speaker 1: I watched that, I was like, how much trouble would
- 22:29Speaker 1: doctor coxby and if he were to do that, and
- 22:32Speaker 1: how much money did he just throw out the window
- 22:35Speaker 1: by doing all of that? I know, I was thinking
- 22:38Speaker 1: the same thing. I thought the same thing too. I
- 22:40Speaker 1: thought like, did they have some system or no one's
- 22:42Speaker 1: gonna tell kelso, because I mean, Carla implies that he
- 22:46Speaker 1: freaks out at least once a year, right, And I
- 22:48Speaker 1: was like, does everyone sort of protect him, because you know,
- 22:52Speaker 1: in the real world of a hospital, he'd be in
- 22:55Speaker 1: a phenomenal amount of trouble for this. Yeah, I could that.
- 23:01Speaker 1: That was the first thing I thought. And then I
- 23:03Speaker 1: thought when Carla said he does this once a year,
- 23:05Speaker 1: I was like, holy shit, yo, cox Is you know
- 23:09Speaker 1: it's clear that he's in pain, but he's in like
- 23:11Speaker 1: a lot of pain. And to build it up to
- 23:14Speaker 1: be able to just damage thousands of dollars of equipment,
- 23:18Speaker 1: you know what I mean? You have to really you
- 23:20Speaker 1: have to really be on that level of fucking. I'm
- 23:23Speaker 1: I don't care anymore. I just I just clearly doesn't
- 23:26Speaker 1: care care anymore. But they also really need Cox, you
- 23:29Speaker 1: know Cox. Everybody needs Cox. You're absolutely right. Well look
- 23:32Speaker 1: what you just said, Donald, that was that came out
- 23:34Speaker 1: a little different. I'm gonna, I'm gonna that's gonna be
- 23:41Speaker 1: my new ring tone, Donald yelling everybody needs Cox in
- 23:49Speaker 1: the hospital. In the hospital, I met the character. And
- 23:55Speaker 1: then and then at four thirty and nine, we get
- 23:58Speaker 1: to see the janitor do medical jargon. Yeah, yeah, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: he kills it. Yeah. I remember you know that Neil
- 24:05Speaker 1: audition for your part. You know that trivia, right, Johnny,
- 24:08Speaker 1: of course, But I mean he's such a spectacular actor,
- 24:11Speaker 1: but I've never seen him do. You Gotta remember, all
- 24:14Speaker 1: medical jargon is Latin based, so when you really get
- 24:18Speaker 1: into it, you're just talking Latin. And so if for
- 24:20Speaker 1: the janitor just to peel out some Latin questioned me,
- 24:23Speaker 1: by the way, I wondered, when I wondered, if I
- 24:26Speaker 1: think that might be the only time the janitors ever
- 24:28Speaker 1: in our apartment, I was going to ask that we
- 24:31Speaker 1: should ask Bill that if he remembers putting the janitor
- 24:34Speaker 1: in the apartment at any point. Okay, Donald has pulled
- 24:38Speaker 1: the lever for an ask Bill. Joel, Bill, you're not
- 24:41Speaker 1: gonna remember I bet the guy on WICKI Scrubs knows
- 24:44Speaker 1: better than you, but we're gonna ask you. By the way,
- 24:47Speaker 1: you know we should do We should also, Joel, that's
- 24:49Speaker 1: what we should do with that guy. We should have
- 24:51Speaker 1: an asked Bill button. But we should haven't also asked
- 24:54Speaker 1: the Scrubs Wick because that he knows he's the keeper
- 24:57Speaker 1: of the trivia more than Bill. Bill's gonna be like,
- 24:59Speaker 1: I don't five, six, seven, eight and Bill, Bill has
- 25:04Speaker 1: found is what you're talking about? Willis Johnny, He's found
- 25:08Speaker 1: his catchphrase. So now he just says five and the
- 25:10Speaker 1: fans think it's hilarious. He just starts hilarious, he starts
- 25:13Speaker 1: the theme song, and Donald and I have to stop
- 25:15Speaker 1: the damn thing. So um. Anyway, Joel, when we talk
- 25:20Speaker 1: to that guy, when we find him, let's ask him.
- 25:22Speaker 1: If he can, we can ask him a Scrubs tribute.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But for now, since we only have Bill, Bill, do
- 25:26Speaker 1: you think this is the only time that the janitor
- 25:29Speaker 1: is ever in our apartment? Even though it's a fantasy.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Neil I'm going buy memory here, guys. But Neil Flynn
- 25:35Speaker 1: was in Turk and JD's apartment when there's a fantasy
- 25:41Speaker 1: about him being a doctor, and I believe he returns
- 25:45Speaker 1: to try and fix their air conditioning or pipes or
- 25:50Speaker 1: something in a later season. But I think he was
- 25:53Speaker 1: only there twice except once I think he was implied
- 26:00Speaker 1: that he was there a third time, that he and
- 26:01Speaker 1: doctor Cox moved Jad's bed somewhere and they did it together,
- 26:06Speaker 1: Thank you, Bill. And once again at five forty nine
- 26:11Speaker 1: when when Kenny and when Kelso and and Uh and
- 26:16Speaker 1: Jude are together, they're butter. They're total butter. Oh gosh, yeah,
- 26:21Speaker 1: they're butter. Now how about Judy, Um, they're they they're great.
- 26:24Speaker 1: How about Judy? So it's for first Judy. I noticed,
- 26:26Speaker 1: because this is funny tracking when we shot this in
- 26:29Speaker 1: two thousand and one that Judy says I gotta get
- 26:32Speaker 1: a tape deck, which I thought was funny, and then
- 26:35Speaker 1: and then when she brings in it's actually a CD player.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's just funny. Even now if you realize that you're
- 26:41Speaker 1: you're definitely pretty good show, dude. That's very good, because
- 26:44Speaker 1: I did not pick up on that well, I caught her.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I caught her saying tape deck, and then my brain went,
- 26:49Speaker 1: there's no way it was cassettes. I remember it was
- 26:51Speaker 1: at least CDs and uh and then and I guess
- 26:55Speaker 1: that was just still I'm imagining. In two thousand and one,
- 26:58Speaker 1: we were still using the expression tape deck, like I'll
- 27:00Speaker 1: get a tape deck. I have a I have a
- 27:03Speaker 1: question for you. On the heels of that, when Kenny says,
- 27:06Speaker 1: like Motley Crue and Winger, my son's a bit of
- 27:09Speaker 1: a headbanger, first of all, the crushed me. And second
- 27:12Speaker 1: of all, is that the first time, first of many
- 27:15Speaker 1: when he refers to his son, who turns out is
- 27:18Speaker 1: just a cavalcade of eccentricity. A cavalcade of eccentricities is
- 27:25Speaker 1: a great title for a screenplay, but um, that is funny.
- 27:30Speaker 1: The Scrubs wiki said, it's the first time he mentions bactor.
- 27:33Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the first time his son
- 27:34Speaker 1: comes up, but this might be the first time his
- 27:36Speaker 1: son comes up in terms of being a cavalcade of eccentricities.
- 27:43Speaker 1: His son, it turns out it's the single most tortured
- 27:46Speaker 1: person on the planet I know. And we never got
- 27:48Speaker 1: to meet him, and we never met his wife. I
- 27:50Speaker 1: think it was Eni, but it's so much better. It's
- 27:52Speaker 1: so much better. No, it was all Remember remember on
- 27:55Speaker 1: Cheers when you never saw what family? No, I think
- 28:00Speaker 1: it was Norm's wife, Vera. We never saw, Joel gave
- 28:03Speaker 1: me the thumbs up. Am I right, Joel? Wow? Well,
- 28:05Speaker 1: well we'll play Jackie play Zach. The bartender would always
- 28:09Speaker 1: alip him see sports reference, and and then he'd he'd
- 28:14Speaker 1: have a one liner and and dunk it if I blew,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I blew to one liner because I didn't remember it.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Vera does make an appearance on Cheers, though, I guess really,
- 28:21Speaker 1: And then well, I want, well, Joel, did you go
- 28:23Speaker 1: on the Cheers WICKI and find out that Vera does
- 28:26Speaker 1: make an appearance on the Thanksgiving Day as you guys,
- 28:29Speaker 1: As you guys have done so wonderfully. I do want
- 28:33Speaker 1: to look at Sammy for a second. Who U is?
- 28:38Speaker 1: Astonishing episode? This really is probably this probably is I
- 28:42Speaker 1: hate to say it, but probably his first real I mean,
- 28:46Speaker 1: other than one liners. This is the first episode where
- 28:49Speaker 1: Sammy really shined as and even even money and he
- 28:53Speaker 1: and Jude together are are completely money. Did you guys
- 28:58Speaker 1: get goosebumps when they sang together. Yes, yeah, absolutely. But
- 29:01Speaker 1: the first time we see Sammy, he does this thing
- 29:05Speaker 1: with his hand where he puts it way in the
- 29:07Speaker 1: back of his skull. Donald, My tricepts are too big
- 29:12Speaker 1: to even do that. Fucking arms arms. To you listeners
- 29:18Speaker 1: out there, I want you to know this guy is
- 29:20Speaker 1: still fucking ripped. He's got bigger biceps than than anyone
- 29:25Speaker 1: I I know. I think. Are you still doing a
- 29:27Speaker 1: lot of paddle surfing? Yeah? Every day, every day you
- 29:31Speaker 1: paddle surf, Johnny, Johnny, you are Let me say something,
- 29:36Speaker 1: you got, mister Miyagi body where it's like you're doing
- 29:40Speaker 1: you know active uh, you know, everything is for a purpose.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I wrote, I wrote a board in the ocean. I'm
- 29:50Speaker 1: using my hands to build. I thought you were saying.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I thought you were saying he had the body of
- 29:54Speaker 1: Pat Merita, and I was like, no, he does not, no, no, no, no,
- 29:58Speaker 1: no no. But when Sammy wax on whack off. The
- 30:01Speaker 1: first time we see Sammy, he's got that hand over
- 30:03Speaker 1: his head, and then the button on the scene with
- 30:06Speaker 1: Judy is he goes careful, I've been hurt before, h
- 30:11Speaker 1: drop me drop me. He loves Judy, he loves Carla,
- 30:14Speaker 1: he loves she hugs him, and he's like, don't let go.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And for those and and well that's later on and
- 30:20Speaker 1: for those who don't know asides, when you keep an
- 30:24Speaker 1: aside real, it's almost impossible because if you don't do
- 30:29Speaker 1: it right, you come off as a crazy person because
- 30:31Speaker 1: you're talking to yourself. And Sammy does it with careful
- 30:34Speaker 1: I've been hurt before. And then when he and Judy
- 30:37Speaker 1: get back together later on, he has two that are genius.
- 30:41Speaker 1: He says, she knows, she knows your name, he says
- 30:45Speaker 1: to himself, and then he says, don't let go. It
- 30:51Speaker 1: dropped me, and I can't tell you how hard that is. Yeah,
- 30:55Speaker 1: he has one more when he's like, I love you
- 30:57Speaker 1: and she turns roun like what, and he goes right
- 31:00Speaker 1: back to the song. Yeah, but that song you got,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I mean, we're jumping all over the place, but that
- 31:05Speaker 1: song moment was so beautiful and I forgot. I apologize
- 31:09Speaker 1: to the universe that I forgot. How pretty Judy's voice
- 31:12Speaker 1: is me too, Yeah, and she slays and it's beautiful,
- 31:17Speaker 1: and their harmonies, I mean, Sammy, we knew because sam
- 31:20Speaker 1: was an amazing singer, and it was in an a
- 31:21Speaker 1: cappella group, but the two of them together, their harmonies
- 31:24Speaker 1: were I got goose bumps all over my body. Yeah,
- 31:27Speaker 1: now let me ask you something, zeky, Yes, And I
- 31:30Speaker 1: could see you, I could see you ringing this one
- 31:33Speaker 1: out as hard as you could. Was this Billy or
- 31:35Speaker 1: you on Baker's beakos? It's probably me you were. You
- 31:41Speaker 1: were ringing everything out. I know there's certain is, there's
- 31:45Speaker 1: certain words. They're just funny becos. I think I think
- 31:50Speaker 1: it was probably not in the script because that wouldn't
- 31:53Speaker 1: probably been funny on the page. But I was probably
- 31:55Speaker 1: just riffing like words that sounded funny. And we should
- 31:59Speaker 1: say it's the appearance of Franklin played by Massioka yet
- 32:03Speaker 1: Oh before he went on to be time traveling star
- 32:07Speaker 1: of Heroes, right, he was the star of the show Heroes,
- 32:12Speaker 1: and I think this was his first juicy gig. He
- 32:16Speaker 1: recurred as Franklin for a while. He's very he's very good. Yeah,
- 32:20Speaker 1: he was funny, hugging is hugging his favorite microscope so
- 32:23Speaker 1: that you didn't destroy it. And then and then at
- 32:26Speaker 1: eight minutes, we go to what I referenced earlier is
- 32:29Speaker 1: Sarah and Donald, and it's it's what I started this
- 32:33Speaker 1: whole thing off with with. However, this ensemble gelled, whether
- 32:37Speaker 1: it was just time or traveling together and getting into it.
- 32:41Speaker 1: You guys are effortless, all right, but let's go a
- 32:44Speaker 1: little bit back. Johnny, you're going too fast. First of all, oh,
- 32:47Speaker 1: dear lord, please tell me that's not a onesie. And
- 32:53Speaker 1: now doctor Cox says, first of all, I'm wearing a onesie,
- 32:56Speaker 1: which I love a onesie. I don't wear a onesie
- 32:59Speaker 1: to bed man when I have a onesie on do
- 33:01Speaker 1: I love a onesie? And I guess JD really loved
- 33:04Speaker 1: one because he wears it to the bar with you.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And then and then Cox pulls over the two ladies
- 33:10Speaker 1: to flirt. Okay, before you go past what I had.
- 33:13Speaker 1: But that's that's aleven twenty eight. I'm an eight. I'm
- 33:16Speaker 1: an eight. I know, I'm I'm, I'm I'm. The onesie
- 33:18Speaker 1: occurs at seven oh six. Oh okay, but go ahead, Donald,
- 33:23Speaker 1: uh Mintie? First of all, what were you all drinking
- 33:27Speaker 1: in your shots? If that was mintie? No, the the
- 33:30Speaker 1: toothbrush was minte oh still from the after you dipped
- 33:33Speaker 1: it into I don't know, it doesn't track. I guess
- 33:36Speaker 1: you're right because the toothpaste would have been off of it.
- 33:38Speaker 1: But because and then right after that, yuck, yuck, yuck. Yeah, yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 1: you know what I was thinking of. Do you remember
- 33:46Speaker 1: do you remember I don't know if you remember this Donald,
- 33:47Speaker 1: but don Johnny, you definitely remember Easy Rider? When uh,
- 33:51Speaker 1: when ever Nicholson would do a shot, he would he
- 33:55Speaker 1: would just say a random word because the shot was
- 33:57Speaker 1: so bad. An Easy Rider, he'd do the shot and
- 33:59Speaker 1: he goes, but he would say like a random word
- 34:03Speaker 1: that would like help him recover from how bad the
- 34:05Speaker 1: shot was. And that's that's what I was thinking of
- 34:08Speaker 1: when I when I when I did it, I was like, yeah,
- 34:13Speaker 1: trying so hard to be manly in front of Cox,
- 34:16Speaker 1: but I'm in a onesie with a toothbrush. I thought
- 34:18Speaker 1: it was funny when you go yucky and then the
- 34:20Speaker 1: writers give Cox, Uh, oh great, I'm drinking with a mouse.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Get here. Like I said, I didn't remember this episode
- 34:28Speaker 1: at all, So I never knew that you guys had
- 34:30Speaker 1: a wingman uh situation going on the two of you.
- 34:34Speaker 1: What happened? I know that one girl blows it because
- 34:37Speaker 1: she's talking about her ex boyfriend. What happened to the
- 34:41Speaker 1: girl you were talking to? Well, I don't think Cox
- 34:43Speaker 1: has gives a flying fuck about. He's just like here,
- 34:47Speaker 1: if this If Cox is like here, you want you
- 34:49Speaker 1: want a reason to stay here, talk to these girls,
- 34:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go. And then JD
- 34:54Speaker 1: is like, okay, now you're tonguing and he tries to
- 34:56Speaker 1: hit on that one woman, but she's just you know,
- 34:59Speaker 1: rambling and rambling and rambling. The hangman's noose is hilarious. Yeah,
- 35:03Speaker 1: it's kind of it's kind of stolen from airplane. Though,
- 35:06Speaker 1: um it doesn't matter, nobody remembers airplane. It's absolutely hilarious. Remember,
- 35:12Speaker 1: I know we're dinosaurs. No, But I think there's a
- 35:16Speaker 1: scene in a moment an airplane when someone's doing a
- 35:18Speaker 1: long speech about their past and and you you you
- 35:21Speaker 1: cut back and the passenger next to him has hung
- 35:24Speaker 1: himself on he's swinging. Anyway. I think it's really interesting.
- 35:29Speaker 1: After the two girls leave and JD and Cox were alone,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I don't remember Cox being that broken. Yeah, I was
- 35:37Speaker 1: gonna say, he's so broken, dude, he's so broken. Well,
- 35:40Speaker 1: it's like once a year. He you know, Carlo says
- 35:43Speaker 1: like once a year he pretty much has a breakdown.
- 35:46Speaker 1: And I went back and I went back. As I
- 35:48Speaker 1: told you guys, I keep composition books and it's kind
- 35:51Speaker 1: of how I learned my lines. And in the margins
- 35:54Speaker 1: I wrote notes to myself, and in that I the
- 35:57Speaker 1: first thing gig I'll digress for a second. The first
- 36:00Speaker 1: gig I gotta get at NYU was to understudy John
- 36:03Speaker 1: Taturo in Dannying the Deep Blue Sea and over at
- 36:06Speaker 1: Circle Rep, which was maybe I lived on Sullivan Street
- 36:10Speaker 1: and Circle was on Bleaker, so it was maybe a
- 36:13Speaker 1: half a block from my house, and I understudy John,
- 36:15Speaker 1: and I was the assistant stage manager, so I helped
- 36:17Speaker 1: call the lights and I made up the actors. But
- 36:19Speaker 1: I had keys to the theater. And because it's just
- 36:22Speaker 1: a two hander or two hander mean just two actors
- 36:24Speaker 1: on stage, it was June Stein and John, and John
- 36:27Speaker 1: went to do desperately seeking Susan. After about eight months,
- 36:30Speaker 1: he wouldn't. He wouldn't. It's eight shows a week off
- 36:33Speaker 1: Broadway and he wouldn't go down. It's a very violent play.
- 36:36Speaker 1: And so I had the keys to the theater. So
- 36:38Speaker 1: every day I would walk and do circles on the
- 36:41Speaker 1: stage because I had the keys, and I would do
- 36:44Speaker 1: both actors parts out loud a couple of times a day.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And this was all fear based, and you were afraid
- 36:50Speaker 1: to Johnny, you were afraid that you might have to
- 36:52Speaker 1: go on and you didn't want it. Yeah, I was
- 36:54Speaker 1: scared to death. And john finally went to go do
- 36:58Speaker 1: desperately seeking Susan and which every actor in New York
- 37:02Speaker 1: wanted to be in, and so I got to take
- 37:04Speaker 1: over for him for about a week. And there's a
- 37:07Speaker 1: line that Danny has at the end of the play
- 37:10Speaker 1: where he says everything hurts. And I worked backwards in
- 37:13Speaker 1: that play from everything hurts, and and what that must
- 37:17Speaker 1: mean for someone to actually say that that everything hurts.
- 37:20Speaker 1: And I gave it to Cox in this that when
- 37:23Speaker 1: we see him, there's that long profile shot of Cox
- 37:27Speaker 1: that will stays on it and everything hurts. Yeah, and
- 37:31Speaker 1: it resonates and it's not nothing said, it's underneath and
- 37:35Speaker 1: Zachy so lovely in the scene. But I just think
- 37:38Speaker 1: the guy's broken. Yeah, And well, so he's so incredibly
- 37:42Speaker 1: committed to this job, which is endlessly frustrating for him,
- 37:47Speaker 1: not only what would be normal dealing with so much
- 37:50Speaker 1: death and pain, but that this hospital, this this hospital
- 37:54Speaker 1: that's it seems, is barely surviving um with its finances.
- 38:01Speaker 1: And he opens the episode walking around, and I noticed
- 38:04Speaker 1: that Will made sure that the ceiling panels were all
- 38:06Speaker 1: fucked up. I don't know if you notice that, but
- 38:08Speaker 1: when you when you're looking around me, like everything is
- 38:09Speaker 1: here is fucking broken. I'm so sick of it. And
- 38:12Speaker 1: in that in that very walk and talk moment, you're
- 38:14Speaker 1: seeing like the ceilings all fucked up, and and he's
- 38:17Speaker 1: just just so frustrated, I imagine with trying to save
- 38:21Speaker 1: lives with no with no support, with no gear, like
- 38:25Speaker 1: so many by the way, like so many doctors and
- 38:27Speaker 1: nurses and people must be feeling now with the lack
- 38:31Speaker 1: of of ppe they had with with COVID. I think
- 38:35Speaker 1: it's really interested at what you were just referencing. That
- 38:37Speaker 1: the writers don't even have Cox reference it as the
- 38:42Speaker 1: hospital or or the name of the hospital. He just
- 38:45Speaker 1: calls it that place. He can't even he doesn't even
- 38:48Speaker 1: want it in his mouth. And he says, I can't,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I can't go back to that place. Yeah, And then
- 38:53Speaker 1: Jad at least feels like Wow, he I don't know
- 38:56Speaker 1: what to do. He broke down, what are we gonna do?
- 38:58Speaker 1: And Carl was like, oh, no, he just does that
- 39:00Speaker 1: once a year. He'll be fine today. And I'm like,
- 39:02Speaker 1: there's no way he's going to be fine. And you
- 39:04Speaker 1: come in like, hey, what, it's going to be a
- 39:07Speaker 1: great day. I stole I stole that from a brother
- 39:12Speaker 1: of my brother's friendship humph for you lives in Atlanta now.
- 39:15Speaker 1: He used to always go around and go, it's a
- 39:18Speaker 1: great dar. I put that one right in my back pocket.
- 39:23Speaker 1: You were so funny. All right, wait, yes, we're gonna
- 39:26Speaker 1: take a break. We always forget because we're having so
- 39:28Speaker 1: much fun. We'll be right back. M see, Donald, you're
- 39:42Speaker 1: giving the people what they want, which is the mmmmm.
- 39:44Speaker 1: They asked for it, so I might as well give
- 39:46Speaker 1: it to a man. A lot of chatter, a lot
- 39:48Speaker 1: of chatter on we got to just digress for a moment.
- 39:51Speaker 1: So much chatter on Instagram about this, about the washcloth conversation.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Well that was a conversation. That was the real deal.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Holy food, man, Johnny, did you do you use a
- 39:59Speaker 1: wash cloth in the shower? We need my wife. My
- 40:02Speaker 1: wife wanted to make sure that before we get into
- 40:04Speaker 1: Johnny using the washcloth. She wanted you guys all to
- 40:06Speaker 1: know that, yes, you are supposed to get rid of
- 40:09Speaker 1: the washcloth after shows at that one time, right period.
- 40:15Speaker 1: But you don't, I do you? You don't. You don't.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Your wife was like, you better fucking tell him we
- 40:22Speaker 1: change the wah cloths. There are too many fucking people
- 40:26Speaker 1: listen to this podcast. Donald, you put it, tell him
- 40:28Speaker 1: we change the wash cloth. I'm telling you right I'm
- 40:31Speaker 1: telling you right now. If he changed the wash cloths, baby,
- 40:34Speaker 1: I told everybody. See, I told everybody. Baby taken care of.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It's not like she listens to the show anyway. If
- 40:40Speaker 1: you want, we can have Dan go back and re
- 40:42Speaker 1: edit that that sentence into the original wash cloth to
- 40:45Speaker 1: be okay, okay, Jesus, that was funny. Well, I just
- 40:49Speaker 1: want you to know that. You know, in one in
- 40:51Speaker 1: that episode, we were talking about both what kind of
- 40:53Speaker 1: merch we should have and the washcloth to be and
- 40:55Speaker 1: son now my whole Instagram fee was like, how about
- 40:57Speaker 1: merch that says team washcloth on wash clothes? I love it.
- 41:07Speaker 1: So somebody said and that look, man, if you're man,
- 41:11Speaker 1: if you know me, this is how I am. But listen,
- 41:16Speaker 1: I accumulate a lot of spit in my mouth when
- 41:18Speaker 1: I talk, so sometimes I might when I'm talking. Listen, asshole,
- 41:26Speaker 1: that's how I talk. All right, accept it. I just
- 41:29Speaker 1: did it again, And if you got a problem with it,
- 41:32Speaker 1: you can kiss my ass, all right because maybe of
- 41:36Speaker 1: course for for Avid Liszards begs the question which instructor
- 41:40Speaker 1: did Donald? Yes, because she just went into aggressive guy.
- 41:45Speaker 1: All right, Johnny, good call. You know when I need
- 41:48Speaker 1: to protect how I sound on this thing. Everybody had
- 41:50Speaker 1: a problem with me saying you know what I mean?
- 41:52Speaker 1: And now somebody's talking about the way I slurp when
- 41:55Speaker 1: I'm done with my sentences. Why the way slur by
- 42:00Speaker 1: the way? You know they have those fancy spit guards
- 42:03Speaker 1: for the mic. We could get you, right, Dan, we could.
- 42:05Speaker 1: You know, it's like a little circle that goes in
- 42:06Speaker 1: front of the mic, so you don't have to be
- 42:08Speaker 1: spitting on the house. I don't need to do any
- 42:10Speaker 1: of it, all right, Well, why don't you reach behind
- 42:11Speaker 1: you and dab your mouth with some sweatpants? Fuck you?
- 42:19Speaker 1: Fuck um? Well anyway, it's just fun to see that
- 42:27Speaker 1: so many people are engaging, and we love to hear
- 42:30Speaker 1: from you, especially when it's uh debating things. We're debating here,
- 42:34Speaker 1: because I love seeing people weighing in and be like,
- 42:36Speaker 1: I'm team washcloth and I'm from the South. I was
- 42:38Speaker 1: about to say, right right, Well, a lot of white
- 42:41Speaker 1: people that got on the on the thing like, yo,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I do use a washcloth, but I am from the South.
- 42:47Speaker 1: So and then some women WoT me like, Zach, you
- 42:50Speaker 1: can put a loofa between your cheeks, you just have
- 42:52Speaker 1: to make sure you wash it. They're washable, and I'm not.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I'm still not gonna put a scratchy loofa between my cheeks. Johnny,
- 42:59Speaker 1: are you team washing cloth or team no washcloth? It's funny.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I use washcloths at hotels, but not at home. But
- 43:07Speaker 1: not at home, but I just surf. I just I
- 43:09Speaker 1: just there's a shower I put in outside the building,
- 43:12Speaker 1: and I just shower out there. And so no, there's
- 43:14Speaker 1: no wash cloths up. Yeah, but in hotels you use
- 43:17Speaker 1: the washcloths. You know why he does. You know why
- 43:20Speaker 1: he does because he doesn't have to worry about cleaning
- 43:22Speaker 1: that fucking pooh pooh stain up that that also is
- 43:26Speaker 1: a problem for me, Zach. I have a problem with
- 43:28Speaker 1: your pooh stain story. Now? Why why dude, you're rehashing
- 43:32Speaker 1: some shit right now? No, pun intender, Do you have
- 43:35Speaker 1: day hold on? Do you have itchy butt all the time? No?
- 43:39Speaker 1: You still don't understand what I'm saying. There's no way, dude,
- 43:41Speaker 1: I do understand what you're saying. I don't have pooh.
- 43:44Speaker 1: If I were to swipe the washcloth down the outside
- 43:47Speaker 1: of my balloon knot, there'd be no pooh on it.
- 43:50Speaker 1: But if I were to dig a quarter inch, there'd
- 43:54Speaker 1: be some remnants. Why are you digging in your ass?
- 43:57Speaker 1: Because that's what I feel The purpose of the wall
- 44:00Speaker 1: cloth is. I have a washcloth as my interface between
- 44:03Speaker 1: me and my rectum, and I can dig a little.
- 44:05Speaker 1: I can be aggressive. Do you check my prosonate while
- 44:08Speaker 1: I'm in there? Do you guys not have the magic
- 44:10Speaker 1: toilet seat that does the spray? I wish I had
- 44:13Speaker 1: to day. I'm gonna get you one of those. It's
- 44:16Speaker 1: a seat, it's a seat you put on, it's a sheet.
- 44:18Speaker 1: It's not even a day. It's the most genius thing
- 44:19Speaker 1: on the planet. Yeah, we got him. We got him
- 44:22Speaker 1: at the Design Center. It's some invited event that we yeah, yeah,
- 44:25Speaker 1: it just blasts a little. It's like a it's like
- 44:27Speaker 1: a water pick for your rainus. It's the single greatest
- 44:30Speaker 1: gift on the planet. It's lovely. Donald. I'm gonna get
- 44:32Speaker 1: you one for Hanaka can't wait. Well, what you have
- 44:34Speaker 1: to get him with with is you also get a
- 44:37Speaker 1: contractor to extend a water outlet and electricity to Oh
- 44:41Speaker 1: that's not coming with my honake. Well, maybe that'll be
- 44:42Speaker 1: the second night. The first night will be the water
- 44:44Speaker 1: pick for your rainus. Second night contractor? Could we could
- 44:54Speaker 1: we get back to la Vere? Welcome back, Welcome back, Johnny.
- 45:00Speaker 1: This is what happens, by the way, when you're into you,
- 45:04Speaker 1: when you're here, we can I love that Johnny's already
- 45:06Speaker 1: here being like, can we get back to the episode,
- 45:08Speaker 1: which is what I'm the one. I'm the one who's
- 45:10Speaker 1: always saying that we tried to digress several times, and
- 45:13Speaker 1: Johnny's like, but you know when yeah, six o two,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I wanted it. Yeah, all right, let's I thought in
- 45:20Speaker 1: twelve fifty two, Um, I thought Billy Billy likes to
- 45:24Speaker 1: take a swipe at Zachie every once in a while.
- 45:26Speaker 1: He always has, and and he Laverne says, you think
- 45:30Speaker 1: so with those ears, and it's just it's just Zachie
- 45:35Speaker 1: goes up totally. I'm called for so fucked up. I
- 45:37Speaker 1: must have done something that week that he wanted to
- 45:39Speaker 1: take me down and not. I've never really had my
- 45:42Speaker 1: ears disc before. I mean, obviously I have a large nose,
- 45:46Speaker 1: and I'm I'm used to you know, anytime a caricature
- 45:48Speaker 1: artist would draw me, it would be like ninety five
- 45:51Speaker 1: percent nose, So I'm used to that. Um, but I
- 45:54Speaker 1: never really had my ears disc before before Nurse Roberts
- 45:58Speaker 1: went after them. Yeah, she and she took She took
- 46:01Speaker 1: no small amount of pleasure in doing it too. No. Um,
- 46:04Speaker 1: Red Dawn fifteen forty, I've never seen Red Dawn. I
- 46:06Speaker 1: don't know anything about what you're fucking kidding me right now.
- 46:08Speaker 1: You've never seen Red Dawn. No, did you audition? No?
- 46:13Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I wouldn't up to that speed. Yet. Well
- 46:16Speaker 1: there's a part in that. Well you're probably you're probably
- 46:18Speaker 1: way too young. I have no idea what wolverines means.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Please tell us. Okay, So, uh, the Russians in Red Dawn, Yeah,
- 46:27Speaker 1: attack America, Yeah, Colorado. The trivia our trivia friend says
- 46:31Speaker 1: there's a mistake in the episode. One of you guys says, Michigan,
- 46:34Speaker 1: but it's actually Colorado. Yeah, because the Michigan. Because the
- 46:37Speaker 1: Michigan Michigan are the Wolverines. The Villege Team Michigan are
- 46:41Speaker 1: the Wolverines. But it actually takes place in Colorado. You're right,
- 46:43Speaker 1: and they attack and kids, students are the rebellion. They
- 46:49Speaker 1: wind up being like all the adults are gathered and
- 46:52Speaker 1: put into concentration camps. And yeah, see Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Uh hold up, I mean they tried to they tried
- 47:03Speaker 1: to remake it and stuff like that. The action is amazing.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Who who's the older brother? Oh my gosh, ghost Well,
- 47:09Speaker 1: Patrick Patrick, Crazy, Patrick Swayze. Just so many people are
- 47:14Speaker 1: in it. Uh. This is the first movie that Jennifer
- 47:16Speaker 1: Gray and Patrick Swayze did together. This is before Dirty
- 47:19Speaker 1: Dancing and Leah Thompson. Leah Thompson's in it all. Also,
- 47:23Speaker 1: what a cast. A lot of people went on to doctors.
- 47:26Speaker 1: It makes me think of another before you explain that
- 47:29Speaker 1: more um Taps. We were talking about Taps either. Do
- 47:32Speaker 1: you guys remember that good? Yeah, A lot of Vale
- 47:36Speaker 1: Valley Forge Military Academy. Yeah, and a lot of amazing actors.
- 47:40Speaker 1: It was their first big thing, Sean and Tom Cruise. Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 1: But anyway, go back to the plot of Lorine. So
- 47:47Speaker 1: the kids fight back, the kids and the and the
- 47:50Speaker 1: school that the kids they're all like on the football
- 47:52Speaker 1: team and stuff like that. And the football team of
- 47:55Speaker 1: the school is called the Wolverines. And so when they're
- 47:59Speaker 1: when they're in the fight with the Russians, their victory
- 48:03Speaker 1: cry is Wolverines. Their battle cry is Wolverines. Like you know,
- 48:08Speaker 1: g I Joe was Yo Joe, There's was Wolverines. Okay,
- 48:13Speaker 1: got it. And in the world of Scrubs, Elliott knows
- 48:16Speaker 1: this movie. I don't believe it, but I believe I believe.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I believe Turk knows that. I don't believe it. Turke
- 48:22Speaker 1: would know it, so therefore j D would know it, right.
- 48:24Speaker 1: But Elliot walks in like, oh, I forget the homework assignment,
- 48:27Speaker 1: let's watch Red Dawn. I'm like, come on, buddy, Yeah,
- 48:30Speaker 1: but it's also great again. You guys both throw the
- 48:33Speaker 1: gesture away and it's great when Zachie comes in and goes, yeah,
- 48:36Speaker 1: Wolverines and he just throws it away and Sarah does too,
- 48:39Speaker 1: and it's great. You know, when I was first watching
- 48:41Speaker 1: this episode, before I got through it, I was like,
- 48:43Speaker 1: what a dick Turk is for inviting my newly ex
- 48:47Speaker 1: girlfriend over to do a homework assignment at the fucking
- 48:51Speaker 1: living room table. But he knew it happened. Done. Yeah,
- 48:54Speaker 1: But then yeah, there's a great thing later on at
- 48:59Speaker 1: ten forty five that Donald does this great thing where
- 49:03Speaker 1: Sarah goes, you and I can still hang out and
- 49:06Speaker 1: Donald goes, no, he's my best friend. Either you fix
- 49:09Speaker 1: it or and then there's an ellipsis. And for all
- 49:12Speaker 1: of us who have had divorced friends or friends who
- 49:16Speaker 1: have broken up, it's the way Donald lays it out.
- 49:19Speaker 1: You can't have both. It's just it's never you got
- 49:22Speaker 1: to be friends with either or the wife. It don't.
- 49:26Speaker 1: You can't have both. It doesn't work. People always choose
- 49:29Speaker 1: a side, don't they have to? Yeah, yeah, there's no
- 49:33Speaker 1: in between. You can't stay in between. You can't be like,
- 49:36Speaker 1: she's my friend and you're my friend. Right, right, I
- 49:39Speaker 1: got it? Now now now when? So what we learned
- 49:43Speaker 1: is that Turk did it in order to try and
- 49:46Speaker 1: get them to be friends again, right, well, I think
- 49:50Speaker 1: his intentions are really good, but it's so raw. I mean,
- 49:53Speaker 1: it's still so new, this breakup. You know, it's like, yeah,
- 49:56Speaker 1: but you guys are running to each running into each other.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Ellie and JD are running into each other every day
- 50:02Speaker 1: at work, and there's all of this animosity towards each other. Yeah,
- 50:07Speaker 1: it's how the show opens up. I felt sad about it,
- 50:09Speaker 1: you know, I have to say, I guess I'm these
- 50:12Speaker 1: old feelings of being so invested in these characters came up,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and of course, I'm sure you know, memories of times
- 50:19Speaker 1: in my own life of this stage of a relationship,
- 50:23Speaker 1: and sure, I don't know. I was so invested that
- 50:25Speaker 1: I genuinely was feeling sad for these two characters and
- 50:29Speaker 1: how they clearly love each other so much, and as
- 50:32Speaker 1: we learned in the series, they ultimately choose each other.
- 50:34Speaker 1: But but oh, that awkwardness of of you know, of
- 50:39Speaker 1: trying to be friends and having mutual friends and working together.
- 50:43Speaker 1: I mean, what a nightmare. Yeah, but what you just
- 50:45Speaker 1: said pays off in the final before you guys go
- 50:48Speaker 1: up on the roof and throw watermelons. When you guys
- 50:50Speaker 1: are on that cot, you Zachie your truth is that you.
- 50:55Speaker 1: It made you genuinely sad and it resonates, absolutely jumps
- 51:01Speaker 1: into the lens and it resonates, and it's so lovely.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I think I had There's nothing demonstrative, there's nothing showy.
- 51:10Speaker 1: It's just this guy sad and sad sucks. Sometimes. I
- 51:13Speaker 1: think that was easy to play because it was real,
- 51:15Speaker 1: and I think I had so much love for Sarah
- 51:18Speaker 1: and um, I just you know, I could just play
- 51:22Speaker 1: in my in my heart that we weren't going to
- 51:24Speaker 1: be friends anymore, and it was just easy to tap into,
- 51:27Speaker 1: you know, right it should it showed. It was very good.
- 51:32Speaker 1: I really you know, when in the beginning of the
- 51:34Speaker 1: episode when he said when JD says, my teacher died,
- 51:39Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is this is going to
- 51:40Speaker 1: be the problem of the episode. And then when you know, Johnny,
- 51:44Speaker 1: when Cox goes into this rent, I was like, no,
- 51:46Speaker 1: this is the problem of the episode. And then how
- 51:49Speaker 1: you bring it full circle? It's always brought back to
- 51:51Speaker 1: one right and with our show, So at the end
- 51:54Speaker 1: of it all, you remind him, didn't you tell me
- 51:56Speaker 1: about your teacher that you know just passed away? How
- 52:00Speaker 1: are you gonna deal with that? Because I know you're
- 52:02Speaker 1: trying to hide it. What did you do when? What
- 52:04Speaker 1: did you do when you found out your teacher died? Oh,
- 52:07Speaker 1: that's right, you made a joke. That shit stings inside
- 52:11Speaker 1: and if you hold on to it, and if you
- 52:12Speaker 1: don't have an outlet, you wind up doing what I did.
- 52:15Speaker 1: You know what I mean. And there's not a bunch
- 52:17Speaker 1: of people at this hospital that are going to protect
- 52:19Speaker 1: you the way they protect me. That's that's the honest
- 52:21Speaker 1: to goodness truth. Get this shit out, you know, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: well said. I believe that too. I mean, I feel
- 52:26Speaker 1: like I do that in life. I try and dissipate
- 52:30Speaker 1: the emotion by making a joke, and then you're all,
- 52:34Speaker 1: you know, which is fine, it's a coping mechanism. But
- 52:36Speaker 1: then you're you're letting that shit fester and build up.
- 52:39Speaker 1: And then Johnny and Cox is saying, like, look what
- 52:42Speaker 1: happens if you let it build for three hundred and
- 52:44Speaker 1: sixty four days? You fucking destroy Franklin's lab. And I wrote,
- 52:49Speaker 1: I wrote, I wrote in my notebook because I've had
- 52:52Speaker 1: about a twenty year, ongoing, twenty year art crush on
- 52:57Speaker 1: a Welsh poet named Dylan Thomas and I didn't have
- 53:00Speaker 1: the spine to go down to the writer's room and
- 53:03Speaker 1: ask Billy if I could put this in. But I
- 53:05Speaker 1: did put it in the margins the poem that do
- 53:08Speaker 1: not go gently into that good night rage, rage against
- 53:11Speaker 1: the dying of the light. And that informs everything I'm
- 53:14Speaker 1: telling Zachie in that scene, that you don't go gently
- 53:17Speaker 1: into the good night rage, rage, rage against the dying
- 53:21Speaker 1: of the light. Oh, I got a chill and I
- 53:23Speaker 1: wanted to say it does Zachie so bad, but it
- 53:25Speaker 1: was a little too esoteric. And but it's underneath. You
- 53:29Speaker 1: need to John, because it was underneath your whole performance.
- 53:32Speaker 1: It floats it. And if you can get Dylan Thomas
- 53:35Speaker 1: to float something underneath what you're doing again, you're not lying,
- 53:39Speaker 1: you're telling your truth. Yeah. I really like that you
- 53:42Speaker 1: do that, John, the putting, putting thoughts and inspiration in
- 53:47Speaker 1: the margins and letting that sort of exist underneath the scene.
- 53:52Speaker 1: I think that's really a smart technique. It's completely selfish
- 53:57Speaker 1: and self serving. It helps me. I always mind that
- 54:00Speaker 1: if you can reduce, since we're lying in front of
- 54:02Speaker 1: the lens, everything most of it's a lie. In other words,
- 54:05Speaker 1: I'm not doctor Cox. I'm not. I'm not the guy.
- 54:08Speaker 1: I'm not Sergeant O'Neil and platoon. I'm not. I'm not
- 54:11Speaker 1: I'm some guy. I'm just the Irish jeckis. And if
- 54:15Speaker 1: you can, yeah, if you can reduce, if you can
- 54:19Speaker 1: reduce the frequency of the lie, whether it's Oliver putting
- 54:23Speaker 1: this through two weeks of boot camp or or putting
- 54:26Speaker 1: Dylan Thomas underneath underneath a particular beat that reduces the lie.
- 54:31Speaker 1: And if you can reduce the lie to a certain frequency,
- 54:36Speaker 1: then the lens doesn't suffer it as a lie quite
- 54:38Speaker 1: as much. And I think, and I think genuinely this
- 54:41Speaker 1: might be a non sequitor, but for me, genuinely listen.
- 54:45Speaker 1: You know a lot of times actors will ask me
- 54:48Speaker 1: for and I'm sure this you guys get this as well.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Young actors ask you for advice or or and you
- 54:54Speaker 1: try and think of like something's the sync you can
- 54:55Speaker 1: say because it's none of it's that easy. But when
- 54:59Speaker 1: I do try and say the most basic thing that
- 55:01Speaker 1: I've learned is genuinely listening. If I'm if the cameras
- 55:07Speaker 1: on me and Johnny C playing Cox is saying all
- 55:10Speaker 1: these things to me, and I can genuinely listen. I'm
- 55:13Speaker 1: not looking in my periphery at the camera. I'm not
- 55:15Speaker 1: looking at the jail on the light that's about to fall.
- 55:18Speaker 1: I'm not distracted by something. I'm genuinely listening. Then I
- 55:22Speaker 1: can't help but react naturally as a human being would. Now,
- 55:26Speaker 1: that's not easy to do it. You can, I find
- 55:29Speaker 1: I can only do it in spurts, which hopefully those
- 55:32Speaker 1: spurts can be edited together into something good. But but
- 55:36Speaker 1: that's the that's sort of my version of what you're saying,
- 55:39Speaker 1: is being as present as you can and genuinely listening
- 55:43Speaker 1: because you're telling the truth. Yeah, and then we react.
- 55:47Speaker 1: I remember when I did this movie, The Last Kiss,
- 55:48Speaker 1: and I was I had a sceneman, Tom Wilkinson, a
- 55:50Speaker 1: wonderful actor, and it was one of those moments where
- 55:53Speaker 1: this really worked for me. He was the cameras were
- 55:55Speaker 1: kind of far back. I love that when when on
- 55:57Speaker 1: the occasion when they can be sort of a little
- 55:59Speaker 1: bit far away on longer lenses, and and he was
- 56:02Speaker 1: just on the porch and he's giving me a speech
- 56:06Speaker 1: about his daughter, and I just remember being so present.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I didn't see the cameras. I just saw this man
- 56:12Speaker 1: talking to me and giving me advice about how to
- 56:15Speaker 1: deal with with my troubled relationship. And I just felt
- 56:19Speaker 1: I was so in the moment that in spurts, I
- 56:22Speaker 1: was able to just forget that it wasn't real, you
- 56:25Speaker 1: know what I mean. No, I totally know to me
- 56:27Speaker 1: when I did geez tripping, I got stone with my
- 56:29Speaker 1: boy Dion right before when I was in homiees Pimoni. Oh,
- 56:43Speaker 1: and there was you know, we were at a dance
- 56:45Speaker 1: at a house party, and I was supposed to be
- 56:48Speaker 1: dancing with this girl at the house party, and I
- 56:50Speaker 1: was so stone that I forgot we were filming with
- 56:52Speaker 1: a damn movie. You think this is bullshit, but I
- 56:55Speaker 1: remember my direction was I thought you were by the way,
- 56:57Speaker 1: I just want to stop for a second. I thought
- 56:59Speaker 1: you were kidding and it was hilarious, but you're serious.
- 57:01Speaker 1: You got so high you forgot you were doing a movie.
- 57:03Speaker 1: I forgot that we were making This is how fucking
- 57:07Speaker 1: I gotta see this movie now. So we're in a
- 57:10Speaker 1: scene and we're you know, it's a the house party,
- 57:13Speaker 1: and we're dancing, and I'm dancing with this girl and
- 57:16Speaker 1: I remember my direction. My direction is tell her to
- 57:19Speaker 1: come with you and you guys exit, So we're dancing
- 57:23Speaker 1: and everything, and now I'm really fucking in and I'm
- 57:26Speaker 1: looking around all boys and shit, oh you know what
- 57:30Speaker 1: I mean. I'm waving to my boy you know what
- 57:33Speaker 1: I mean in the movie and everything like that, and
- 57:35Speaker 1: I remember Joe, oh, I'm supposed to tell us something.
- 57:38Speaker 1: So I whispered in the ear like, yo, let's go
- 57:40Speaker 1: to the other room. And she goes, okay, let's go.
- 57:43Speaker 1: And so we're exiting, and as I'm walking out, I'm like,
- 57:46Speaker 1: oh shit, I just pulled that check what I did?
- 57:52Speaker 1: You know what I mean. I'm looking at my boys like, yeah,
- 57:56Speaker 1: look how I did it. And then they said cut
- 57:58Speaker 1: and I was like, no, I didn't. I didn't, but
- 58:02Speaker 1: you know, I didn't go like how we were making
- 58:04Speaker 1: a movie. But it was like cut and we walked away.
- 58:06Speaker 1: My point was like, Yo, it really looked like you
- 58:08Speaker 1: was taken unto the other room. Oh my god. That's
- 58:14Speaker 1: so funny, man. So that one would get me. I
- 58:16Speaker 1: would get hives if I ever found myself in that situation.
- 58:20Speaker 1: I would. I'm worrying too much. How often how often
- 58:24Speaker 1: were you stoned? Um while acting on scrubs? Um? A
- 58:29Speaker 1: percentage of the time. It's not it's not as high.
- 58:32Speaker 1: How to add it to the Scrubs Wiki, It's not
- 58:35Speaker 1: as high as everybody, you know, as I made it
- 58:38Speaker 1: out to be. But there were times where I came
- 58:40Speaker 1: to work and I was like, fuck, didn't I did
- 58:44Speaker 1: it in the morning. By the end of the day,
- 58:46Speaker 1: I'll be fine, dude. I was problem. I had a problem.
- 58:49Speaker 1: You know'd be funny if on the Scrub's wiki with
- 58:51Speaker 1: each episode it has a little section where it says
- 58:54Speaker 1: how high Donald was during the filming of this episode.
- 58:58Speaker 1: You know, it has like a it has like a
- 59:00Speaker 1: ed for very and there's like a there's like a
- 59:01Speaker 1: there's like a color system, like how dangerous the water
- 59:04Speaker 1: is at the beach. Those those days are over, though,
- 59:07Speaker 1: those days are over. But I do remember. I remember thinking,
- 59:10Speaker 1: you know, there's so many actors that are baked when
- 59:13Speaker 1: they're working. And I'm sure there are there are, you
- 59:15Speaker 1: know what I mean. But it really wasn't for me.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. I'm gonna get us back
- 59:20Speaker 1: on track here at eight six Johnny Johnny. If Johnny
- 59:24Speaker 1: was always on the show, we'd be much more on track.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Let me tell you. Let me tell you something. The
- 59:29Speaker 1: todd shows up in the eight o six hilarious, and
- 59:31Speaker 1: he comes up from behind the couch and it's kind
- 59:34Speaker 1: of creepy. Yeah, a lot creepy. The things he says
- 59:38Speaker 1: to her as a little creepy, I know, but I
- 59:42Speaker 1: laughed out loud when he said, um, so, is it
- 59:51Speaker 1: safe to assume Donald that at eight fifty six, when
- 59:54Speaker 1: you do a very graceful jump up under the nurses station,
- 59:57Speaker 1: that you are not, in fact wearing silk box I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: am definitely not wearing silk boxers. Do you wear do
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: you wear anything out of your scrubs? I did at
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: the time because I was look man, he had I
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: got a leaky oh ring and so loose gaskets. Sometimes
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: when you go to the bathroom and come back and
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: you got a little peace spot, it's embarrassing. So I
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: don't think that you could. I mean, I don't think
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that it would be appropriate for you to not have
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: your your what your situation contained. I'm sure there were
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: people that put on their scrubs at this. Johnny's hand
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: goes out, Oh really, Johnny, you freeball in your scrubs?
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Do One time in the Philippines we were shooting. We
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: were shooting a flick and during boot camp I had
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: to go through a river is called a blue, and
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: so we had to go through a blue and hold
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: our weapons above our heads and then we got out
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: the other side. I took my fatigues off, and I
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: had about nine leeches right near my power source, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: so I decided and then die. We that our commandant
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: told us that they like warm, wet places like under
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: your arms and down in your crotch. And I haven't
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: worn underwear since nineteen eighty six. Wow, And that's on
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: the tuck and you can't say, you can't preface it
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: with that's all. That's what It took. Seven leeches, seven
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: leeches near my near my power's horse. I'm not no chance, Lance,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: And how do you pull him off? He just can't
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: do you? Just can you just pull a leach off?
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I've never had a leach Stockdale Dale came and he
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: used like a cigarette butt and and like he'd burned
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: him and pull him at the same time. And it
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: was very humiliating to take my you know, to have
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: all twenty four guys looking at, you know, the Irish
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: donkey with seven leeches. Wow, I'm not getting any leeches
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: near my I guess jeans would be fine, but scrubs
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: wouldn't work. No gross even ge oh man, I couldn't
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: do it. My jeans h too much chaffing. All right,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: should we get back to the episode. Guys, are you
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: boxers or tidy what do you guys? I'm straight up boxers, dude,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: tighty whities can't happen. No, no, I don't do tidy whities.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: But they're not boxers like traditional boxers, miners, sort of
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: like clingy, tight soft boxers. They're they're stance if um if.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I highly recommend this brand Sta NC. They're not a
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: paid sponsor, but I'm giving the dance like the socks. Yes,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: they make really fun socks. But they also make this
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: like butter It's called like butter undis, butter undis by stance. Yeah,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: there you go. There's a shout out for butter Undy's.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Send Donald an XXXL every stance folks. I don't need
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: an X. My waist isn't that big, dude? Oh quadruplex. Wow.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: We gotta get back to Kenny and Judy because we
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: haven't given to them their due. Because the song, the
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: song he turns off is in fact the song that
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: then Sammy and Judy sing together acapella, beautiful, so pretty.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: That's so tough to do. Also, oh yes it was.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: You know, they must have practiced a lot. They had
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to have practiced that, because that's so like even the
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: way luck, the cadence and everything was on fire, you
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: know what I mean. That had to They had to
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: remind everyone who's listening what the song was. It was
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: talk dirty to me, Yeah, by poison. But they're not again,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Uh gosh, I'm beating a dead horse here. But the
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: two of them are. They're not showing off. They're not
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: putting it off on a bill they're not putting it
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: up on a billboard. They're so great, they're so graceful,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: and they're not doing um, can you believe this shit?
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Because Sammy never does that and Judy is the master
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: of just navigating her way through a scene, and the
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: two of them together are so money and that thing
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: is just so lovely. And then when the same he
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: says I love you, I dropped. Yeah, yeah, so good
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: on this. It really made me miss him. Uh. I
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: had just one of those moments of going fucking hell
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: gone too soon. This guy is so funny and so talented,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: and I just wish more people got to know how
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: talented he was. I mean, he was a successful working actor,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: but I you know, I watch him in this and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I go, I just I wish everyone in the world
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: knew how genius this guy. His abilities. Man, he just
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: had so many great abilities, you know what I mean?
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: He could make you did you know problem? Did you
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: guys at the end of the show actually get to
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: throw things off the roof? Yeah? I don't remember I
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: do any of that because I remember that being a
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: kind of a nightmare with all but it also people
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: it also dates the show with Letterman talking about let
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: you want to throw stuff off the roof? Like Letterman. Yeah,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: it's like Letterman hasn't been on for what ten years now. Well,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: for those of you who are too young to or
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: didn't ever watch Letterman, he would often throw large objects
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater, and it
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: was just before he moved to CBS. No, I think
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: it was a bit he did for the whole his
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: whole thing. I don't I don't remember. Yeah, I don't remember,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: but um, but I think we did. I have a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: weird memory. Of feeling like it was kind of dangerous.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: It's probably something they wouldn't let us do today, with
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: all the with with the doubt, with the increase in
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: set safety. Because the wall of that roof wasn't incredibly
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: high and we were hurling watermelons over the side. I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: don't know that would be approved by uh by HR
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: this at this day at age. By the way, my
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Bill Cosby that that made me laugh out loud, and
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: I think it made me laugh. I think it made
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: me laugh because of how bad my Bill co Yeah,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: it was like it was turned up to eleven. It was,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: it was turned up to eleven. I think, yeah, it was.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: It was almost like you were doing an impression of
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy. Of Eddie Murphy doing his impression. Yeah, now,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: why Pudding, I didn't even that was such a non sequitor,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: like we put putting in medical gloves, yeah, and then
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: toss them off the roof. Yeah, and then you went
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: into a I wonder if that was in the script.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Do you think I was in the script or you
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: just riffed. No, that was definitely in the script. If
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: we putting off the roof, they definitely put it in
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: the show. I would like to talk to you about it,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: would like to talk to get about some of the
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: things about some of the things that you do in
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: your show now and then and then and then Neil
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: at the end saying horror, yeah, like apocalypse now right.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I think that was the I learned from Scrubs wiki
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: that was the first time Neil's ever been alone in
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: a scene. Really, Oh my goodness, Yeah, that's WICKI they
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: really have but he gets Billy. Billy puts them alone
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: more and more as the well, him building that squirrel
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: thing in his garage, and I think that, um, I
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: think it's more and more alone. Yeah, And I think
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: that this was a shift in Neil, Like I think
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: he entered the world of a regular cast member around here.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: And there is an episode where Neil's not going to
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: be on this show in the first season, and that's
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: how they got around him not being a regular. If
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: I'm really if I recall correctly, all we can ask
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: a Bill right now. That's a good ask Bill. Go ahead,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Donald to ask Bill Bill coma If my memory serves
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: me correctly, isn't there an episode where there's no janitor?
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: And if so, was that related to tiptilling around his
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: contract because he would have had to have been a
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: regular of some sort. Do not say five to six,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: seven eighth bill, We'll shut it down. Neil Flynn did
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: not have to test for the part of the janitor,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: so he was not listed as a regular. You know,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I just cast him as a guest star in the
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: pilot the intention of putting him in every episode, and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: then we did put him in every episode as a
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: recur guy, and at the very end made him. You know,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: I was able to convince the networks they liked him
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: a lot, that we needed to pay to make him
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: a regular the second year. Originally um Dan only wanted
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: him in a maximum of four episodes, but I was
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: like four, you gotta have him in, like five, six,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: seven eight. Stop it, this fucking guy. Let's take a break.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Hi, Hi, Hi,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: we're back in, back in quick. After a quick pea break,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: We're back. Joel introduced us. It's Jeremy. Lee nailed it.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: There's our Jeremy. You got the Oprah introduction. It's a
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: it's a sacred rite that only Jeremy. Are you in
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: an office. I'm in my home office right now. Yeah, Well,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Jeremy like Hice. Okay, Oprah, can you chill for two seconds? Jeremy,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: We'll do that. Zach Bruff, you get a car, You
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: get a car, You get a car. Jeremy, Um tell
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: us you have a special special day to be on
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the podcast because the legendary, the living legend, Johnny C
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: McGinley has joined us. So, who do you have a
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: question for three of the cast members of the TV
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: show Scrubs. I do have a question with if I
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: don't mind, just a quick background, I work with children
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: with autism, and so we actually did research at this
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: my wonderful company and nonprofit Autism Partnership Foundation to research
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: if we could change a kid with autism to like
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: social things, not just toys or food. And so we
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: actually stole from an episode that you guys did and
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: got children to actually enjoy the social aspect of that
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: instead of their favorite toy. So I guess my first
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: question is wow. Yeah, and it's published in a journal,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: so you can look at it. Hungry chicken at all.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: That's incredible. Good for you. I guess the question is
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: who came up with the hungry chicken? Because we use
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: it all the time. Wow, I don't know. I think
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: that's Bill Lawrence that came up with one of the writers,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: right am I? Right? Guys, Oh god, if you if
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: you throw this to Billy, he's going to do a five.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: You know, we got a limit him. We got a
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: limit him. He doesn't get too many. Um, that is
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: a good question. I have no idea. I think it
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: must have been one of the writers. I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: we got to throw it to Bill. So wait, just
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: explain a little bit more. Um, the children who have autism,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: you say that they would they would rather interact with
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: the toy, and you use this to give them a
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: way to interact without having a toy involved. We both
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: think like children thoughts them only like toys or only
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: want food, and they only use that to motivate them.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: But we know we can motivate them socially too, because
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: they need to be social and it's a social disorder.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: So we would take the hungry chicken and we would
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: have do it with a friend of theirs and then
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: see if after we did it with them they would
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: pick that or favorite or their favorite toy. And so
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: we were able to show like by really selling it
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: and really doing a lot of hungry chicken that they
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: would pick a social motivator instead of like food or
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: M and M's, which is, yeah, that's amazing. Well, now,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: I really wish I could take credit for inventing that,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: because that's a very inspiring story. Um wow, do you
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: have another question for us? Yeah? I guess I do. Um. So,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: you've talked a little bit about the music on the show. Um,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: and I just think the music on the show is great.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: And Zach just to say, I think the Garden State
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: soundtracks one of the best soundtracks ever. Thank you. It's
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a mixtape. Hold on, it's a mixtape. It's a mixtape.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I want a Grammy for money? Yeah, but you Yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: if you want a mixtape Grammy, you want a mixtape.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I didn't even know they had a mixtape Grammy, but
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: it turns out they do. And you won that shit
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: I did. I did. You've held it, I have. I
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: got the sound, I got the I got the fucking
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: first award in my egot. I didn't think it was
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: going to be my first. I thought it might be
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: my last. Right. If you get when you get the egot,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: you already got the Grammy, right. I thought I was
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: going to do like a book on tape. Jeremy, do
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: you know what you got is? Of course? And Grammy
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: Oscar Tony yes, sir, yeah, yes, but thank you, thank you, Jeremy.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Um I Donald ruined my my praise from you, and
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I want to thank you. It was it was shocking
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to to everyone involved that that soundtrack was so successful,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: but I really appreciate it. It really is a good soundtrack. Though,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: do you guys just like already have a song in
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: mind you know when that episode comes, or do you
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: listen to a song and you know, oh, that'll be
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: a great song to add to a soundtrack one day.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I think what happens is, um there there were some
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: writers that were involved. There was of course Christa Miller
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: who plays Jordan and is Bill's wife, and she's very
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: very into it and very good at it, and Bill
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: and then the editors, and then I think what happens
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: is you sort of this is the way I do
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: it for my films as well. You sort of build
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: a big ass playlist of potential songs. You feel like, oh,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: these would be great for a montage, or or oh
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: this is a really moving song for somewhere. You don't
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: really know, and then when you get in the edit,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: you start to go, let's try that song, and then
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: you see and I just I always jokingly have a
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: goosebump detector. You can listen to twenty five songs and
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: they're like, Okay, that's okay, and then all of a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: sudden you watch it and you just get goosebumps up
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: and down your arm and you go, Okay, well, that's
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: obviously a contender. And that's a lot of trial and error,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a lot of trial and error. And these days it's
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: even harder because so many people are doing it that
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: when I made my film Wish I Was Here, we
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: would we would try it, and we'd fall in love
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: with the song, and then we'd look up online. I
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: was like, oh no, it's been used in grays Anatomy,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: It's been used on this It's been used in this movie.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: It was. So it's even harder now because you got
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: to find music that hasn't been done to death in
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: in uh in being used in with film Wow. Wow.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: I mean, I think a really a really good example
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: that is Joshi is your friend Joshi and the different
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: music he brought to the show Zachie was just astonishing. Yeah,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Joshua Raiding was a a is an artist that we
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: love a lot. And actually, Johnny, I don't even know
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: if you know this trivia, that his song Winter, which
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: is in that famous episode where we where we lose
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Brendan Frasier, was the first song you'd ever written. And yeah, yeah, wow,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: thank you because he wasn't the one hit wonder dude.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Wow this many years yeah, this many years later. I
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: loved his cover on Alex Sink that first episode. Just
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: oh of Bob Dylan, thank you. You're you're the so
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: you're the guy that was watching Alex Sink. Thank you
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: so much. My wife and I who's really sad she
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: couldn't be here, but she's actually a second year resident,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: so she's off at the hospital. Oh wow yeah yeah, well,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: thank you, and thank you for being such a fan
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: of all things Scrubs and Alex Sink and Garden State.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I really appreciate that. And all you guys guys are amazing. Man,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: you don't even know my name. That was Jeremie. No,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: we were just watching Can't Hardly Wait. My wife is
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: not from America. We were watching Can't Hardly Wait, and
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: we I forgot you were in it. Oh my gosh,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: that's the best way to that's great, that's great. Right,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: it was going right, and then you were like, he's like,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: he's like. I turned to my wife and I was like,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: did you remember the Taye Diggs is in this movie?
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: All right, Jeremy give it up. Thunderous applause then for
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Jeremy le Jeremy, stay safe and keep doing the beautiful
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: work you're doing with with autistic children. And thank you
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: so much for for the kind words. Oh, thank you
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: so much for having me. Hey, we appreciate it. Thanks buddy. Well, guys,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: I think we did it. We we've gone We've gone long.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: The people seem to love it. Whenever I say I've
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: gotten a lot of chatter on my Insta saying stop,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: saying you've gone too long. We don't want you, guys
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: to stop, but we want to. You know, I had
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: a great acting teacher used to say, give him ten
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: minutes less than they want. Was this great acting teacher
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: that you have ever on scrubs? Yes, by the way,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: did you know that? Dude? Come on, man, I thought
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: you may have forgotten with your stoner break. Who did
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: who did? Who was your acting teacher? And who did
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: he or I had I had the privilege to work
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: with Zach's acting teacher though David Downs. David Downs I worked,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: and who did David play? He played the one whose
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: kid was in a coma? Or uh broke his Uh?
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: I don't, I don't remember. I directed the episode. It
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: was this wasn't the epic Heather Graham one wasn't. No,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: it wasn't. It was like he broke his sonny that
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: broke his back or I forget what it was. But
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: you know, he asked me to be honest with him,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: and he was like his one line. I remember the
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: part of the interaction we had. He said to me,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: do you shave your head because it's cool or because
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: you're bold? And I go bold. Yeah, it was a
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: really good episode. We'll have to figure out what it was.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: But yeah, David Downs was my acting teacher at Northwestern
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: and also a beautiful actor, and so I had him
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: do a guest star on Scrubs. Yes, I always. I
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: always feel like one of the great gifts of being
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: mister Boulger, either a hit show or producing a movie,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: is throwing talented friends, not just random friends, talented friends,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: putting them on your piece, and I did it with
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: a half a dozen actors on Scrubs and then if
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: people are right, I do it all the time of
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: the movies I'm producing too. Yeah, you have some very
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: talented friends. Yeah, you've got quite a posse of Sorry,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I just don't interrupt. Oh, I know what it was
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: why it was special? It was the Wizard of Oz episode,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Joel is telling us in the chat. It was mister
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Boulger and his son was brain dead and someone's brand.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: It was the it was a season five episode seven.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: If you're if you're listening and are curious, um, it was. Yeah,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: it was that that epic was your devas episode. But Johnny,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: mister Boulger would be an homage to Ray Boulder, Yes, sir,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: it would be. Now, Johnny, Johnny, you have a lot
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: of you have a lot of friends that like are
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: almost like mentors to me, like Eric LaSalle, Michael Beach.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: These are people that you've known Cusack. Yeah, since you
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: like out of college or you went to college with
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: a lot of these guys. Eric and I, Eric and
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I went to college to go right, and uh, that's
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: he's my guy, Johnny. And these guys are like these
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: guys are like, you know, uh, mentors to me, like,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: you know, when I was a young actor, Michael Beach
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: was one of the people. When I was doing Wait
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and Exhale, I was like, well, this is what you
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: need to do if you want to be successful. Stop
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: smoking that damn cigarette that you're holding onto like I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: was smoking sis, Like I want to be a movie star,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: smoking a cigarette a table read. He was like, oh,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you want to be a movie star. Put the fucking
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: cigarette down, dude, Mike, Mike, Mike is no lie, straight up,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: straight up, Johnny. I remember I was thinking the other
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: day you were on a movie, a big movie, the
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: one um that took place at the motel with Cusack
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: and all it Identity Jim Jim Engel directed I Identity,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: and it's a really good movie. I recommend to you.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I liked a lot, but I was. I remember you
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: said you want to come visit the set because the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: set was really cool. Even though it looks like it's
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: all outside, it was all in a giant sound stage
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: and it was all pissing rain the whole time. And uh,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: and you said you got to You said you gotta
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: come see this set. It's really cool. And I was like,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm allowed to and uh, And I
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: came to visit you one day on set and it
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: was just so cool. And I just I thought of
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: that because I know a bunch of your buddies. Uh.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: You know, it feels like you and your posse you
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: often cast each other in each other's films. I think
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: it's I think if your posse's talented, I mean, there's
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: there's some outliers, but then then yeah, good audience, it's
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: gonna it's gonna make life easier. I like that too.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: I like to use the same people over and over again.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: But you didn't use Donald in Garden State. Oh Jesus,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: here you go. Thank God, thank you, John, thank you
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: very much. Like Oliver Stone used John c McGinley, and yeah,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: so many times, so many times ever made you would
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: think that Zach Braff would take Ah, you know what
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: I mean? Like, you know, uh, I want you to
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: be the I want you to be the Johnny c
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: McGinley to my Oliver Stone. You say that now, but
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think. How many movies did
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you do with him? John? Six? Wow? I think incredible, incredible,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: And there's some and they're six of the best. What
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: about talk radio? I always thinking about you and talk
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: radio the other day, I always thinking about you. In seven,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: for those of you don't remember, Johnny's in one of
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: my favorite movie Seven. I love them take the shot
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: and then Johnny, you go, I don't know if you
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: improv Did you improv this? When you go, somebody calls somebody?
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I did. Improve That was incredibly He's in the chopper
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: right when, right when the ship goes down with there
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: wasn't the box was in the box. And then David
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: gave us as much rope as we wanted to hang
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: ourselves with. He he lets the actors run and then
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: he'll chop it together and post, but he lets you run.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: There were two scenes, so you're in the chopper, but
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: you're also in when they bum rushed the room too, right, Yeah,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: with with the emaciated guy. Yeah, but out there forget.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: I remember getting goosebumps when you know this before I
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: even knew you, Johnny, and and you were and you go,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: oh my god, somebody calls somebody, and I was like,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: that's such a good movie. With the emaciated guy. David
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: found out there was asbestos in that building and he
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: wasn't down with it. So we shut down for a
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: while and found another building and that was a whole
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: to do. Um. That was a complete clusterfuck. When he
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: found out there was asbesist in that building. You know
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: you have you know you have budget. When they're like,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: there's asbesist in the building, we're shutting down. I've never
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: been on a movie or that had that power. But again,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: I'm no Fincher. Man. I love Fincher, and man I
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: love that movie. That's one of my favorites. Yeah, everybody
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: shines in that movie. What's in the Box? Um. On
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: that note, we love you all for listening. Keep chatting
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: us on and still you make us laugh. And if
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: you have a question, scrubs iHeart at gmail dot com.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: Joel will decide if your question is worthy for air,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: right Joel, Joel yields all the power. Don't yell at
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: me and Donald. We don't do anything, Joel. A lot
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: of people like the fact that we talk Star Wars too.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: I'm just gonna put it out there. Yeah, I saw
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: that too. I've been getting a lot of d n
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: There was a lot of there was a lot of
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: talk about I saw much to my dismay. I saw
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: someone going. I really thought Donald and Joel's inside about
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: Quigan Joe, whatever it is, was really interesting. Shut up.
