- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, it was good to get back on the field
- 0:03Speaker 1: and kind of get the bad taste out of our
- 0:04Speaker 1: mouth from Saturday's game and get focused on our next opponent.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And I think we had a good practice. We were
- 0:11Speaker 1: able to go outside today, which I think helped everyone's
- 0:14Speaker 1: spirits get on the grass beautiful day. Uh, it was
- 0:19Speaker 1: a good practice, so they're refocused. That was a tough
- 0:23Speaker 1: one to get over. Obviously Maryland's a very good football team,
- 0:29Speaker 1: but we thought that we would perform better as a program,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and uh, you know, just getting back out on the
- 0:34Speaker 1: grass today kind of it kind of you know, it
- 0:37Speaker 1: just washes the last bit of that away. So we're
- 0:40Speaker 1: looking forward to a really good game Saturday. Merrimack is
- 0:43Speaker 1: a They're gritty, tough, hard nosed, fight you kind of team,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and I think it's really personified by the way they
- 0:51Speaker 1: play defense. Their their head coach has been you know,
- 0:55Speaker 1: there for a long time as a linebacker coach, as
- 0:57Speaker 1: deems of coordinators, assistant head coach, and now the head coach,
- 1:00Speaker 1: which and they played his personality, which is tough and
- 1:03Speaker 1: hard and fast and physical. They play a ton of
- 1:06Speaker 1: man demand, bump and run more than probably any team
- 1:09Speaker 1: in the country. They just get up in your face
- 1:11Speaker 1: and they are physical with the line of scrimmage and
- 1:14Speaker 1: they make it hard to complete balls down the field.
- 1:17Speaker 1: They run to the ball well, they hit and they
- 1:18Speaker 1: tackle on offense. You know, we'll have to see who
- 1:22Speaker 1: their quarterback ends up being, just like our quarterback. Their
- 1:25Speaker 1: quarterback took a hit in the second half and he
- 1:27Speaker 1: wasn't able to return.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Their starter.
- 1:29Speaker 1: They've got a transfer from Maine who came in and
- 1:33Speaker 1: he has a lot of energy to him. You know,
- 1:37Speaker 1: he came in late and they were down, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 1: less than ideal situations. But if he's the guy and
- 1:41Speaker 1: he has to his start, then I'm sure he'll get
- 1:44Speaker 1: a lot of work in practice and I'm sure he'll
- 1:46Speaker 1: be excited to play. So I know our guys will
- 1:48Speaker 1: be and and you know, we have a lot that
- 1:53Speaker 1: we need to get accomplished this week in practice to
- 1:55Speaker 1: get ready to play a good game on Saturday. He's fine,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I mean he you know, he took a hit. It
- 2:04Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys saw the TV copy,
- 2:06Speaker 1: so you know it wasn't targeting obviously, and it really wasn't.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The hit to the back of his head with the
- 2:12Speaker 1: arm it's when his helmet came off and his head
- 2:14Speaker 1: hit the ground. Shook him up a little bit. He's
- 2:16Speaker 1: recovering really well. He was out there today. He didn't
- 2:19Speaker 1: participate in very much, but he did some things. His
- 2:23Speaker 1: spirits are great. We'll see where he is on on Saturday.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That'll be a decision that the doctors will make. That
- 2:29Speaker 1: won't be a that won't be a coach's decision. That
- 2:32Speaker 1: won't be a Nick decision. That'll be a doctor's decision.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Who Malik won't be ready now. He was out there
- 2:43Speaker 1: today watching in a cast. The surgery was successful. Their
- 2:48Speaker 1: main concern right now would be infection. If you know,
- 2:51Speaker 1: if if he was just sweating and grind me in
- 2:54Speaker 1: a game, and even though they'd cast it so their
- 2:56Speaker 1: their main concern is infection, and then they'd have to
- 2:59Speaker 1: go back in and they we obviously don't want that
- 3:01Speaker 1: to happen. Price has been lifting. He was over on
- 3:04Speaker 1: the bikes today, he was in the sun. It looked
- 3:08Speaker 1: to me like he was doing pretty well. We'll see
- 3:11Speaker 1: you know where he is at the end of the
- 3:13Speaker 1: day and tomorrow. But once again, that'll be a decision
- 3:16Speaker 1: that the doctors make. You know, we want to make
- 3:18Speaker 1: sure we're making the right decision for not only them,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but you know, this football team and the entirety of
- 3:24Speaker 1: the season.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It wasn't just.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You're hitting it right on the head. Yeah, listen, the.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Rule is not going to change.
- 3:40Speaker 1: We know it's not going to change, and if it
- 3:42Speaker 1: is going to change, it's going to take a long time,
- 3:44Speaker 1: as rules do take to change. There's so many running
- 3:49Speaker 1: quarterbacks in college football to day that are so good,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and that puts so much stress on a defense. And
- 3:55Speaker 1: when they slide late and you've already initiated your point
- 3:59Speaker 1: of aim as a tackler, and then they slide and
- 4:02Speaker 1: lower their head into your point of aim, there's nothing
- 4:05Speaker 1: you can do. And if you don't initiate your at
- 4:09Speaker 1: the start of your tackle, you know there's a chance
- 4:11Speaker 1: you're gonna get run over, right, Okay, you're going to
- 4:14Speaker 1: get juked out. So you're in a conundrum. I mean,
- 4:17Speaker 1: you really are as a defensive player. And I went
- 4:19Speaker 1: back and looked hard at at the two that they
- 4:22Speaker 1: called on us, NICKX, I thought was pretty obvious that
- 4:25Speaker 1: it wasn't targeting. And you know, I mean, it's as slow,
- 4:29Speaker 1: frame by frame as I can make it, and I
- 4:32Speaker 1: just especially on Durante's I don't I've been coaching for
- 4:37Speaker 1: forty years. I've seen probably a million football players in
- 4:41Speaker 1: my life, and I can't tell you what I need
- 4:43Speaker 1: to tell him. I don't know. I don't know what
- 4:46Speaker 1: to tell him. And that's a frustrating thing for a
- 4:48Speaker 1: coach when you can't coach your player to do it right.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Because if I say, hey, raise your target level, well,
- 4:55Speaker 1: his target level was high.
- 4:57Speaker 2: The guy slid down into it.
- 4:59Speaker 1: When I say if he starts to slide, pull up, well,
- 5:02Speaker 1: he didn't start to slide until the defender had initiated,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know, his his projected contact into the to the quarterback.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So it's very frustrating. But I think this. I think
- 5:17Speaker 1: they have to throw the flag and they have to
- 5:19Speaker 1: take a look at it. I believe and I and
- 5:22Speaker 1: I hope that I'm right. That the people that are
- 5:25Speaker 1: in the replay booth are looking for a reason not
- 5:27Speaker 1: to call targeting rather than a reason to call targeting.
- 5:31Speaker 1: That they're taking into effect into factoring in the late slide,
- 5:37Speaker 1: that they're factoring in that the defender has already started
- 5:40Speaker 1: his decision to make contact. And if they do that,
- 5:43Speaker 1: then I think we got a chance.
- 5:45Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I also know this, They're always going to air on
- 5:48Speaker 1: the side of player safety, and that's that's the you know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: coming down from the top. So it's frustrating, but it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: what it is. We have to do the best we can,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you know. I think that when it's a quarterback that's running,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know, you have to if you're going to tell
- 6:02Speaker 1: your defenders anything, it's that you have to you're not
- 6:05Speaker 1: going to get a big hit, right, make sure you
- 6:07Speaker 1: get yourself positioned so you don't take a big hit.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Because Maryland's quarterback was about six four two twenty something, right,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and he's going against the corner who's you know, five
- 6:16Speaker 1: to eleven one ninety, you know. So it's not like
- 6:20Speaker 1: the old days where you think the quarterback is the
- 6:21Speaker 1: frail guy. These quarterbacks in college are not colleges. They're
- 6:25Speaker 1: not frail guys anymore. So it's it's really difficult, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and I'm sure that I'm not the only coach that's frustrated.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think one of the things that probably would be
- 6:34Speaker 1: frustrating to us as coaches is who's making the decisions,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Like who's deciding how we're going to enforce targeting. You know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: are these football coaches, are these football people. Are these
- 6:46Speaker 1: people that have played the game, Have they been in
- 6:48Speaker 1: that situation? Do they understand the speed of the game
- 6:51Speaker 1: that it happens like this, that it's not slow motion?
- 6:55Speaker 1: And you know, that's that's my frustration. I would assume,
- 6:58Speaker 1: maybe wrongly, but I would assume that's a frush stration
- 7:00Speaker 1: of most football coaches in the country.
- 7:02Speaker 3: You coach quarterbacks not to slide late or is that
- 7:05Speaker 3: an individual decision by the player.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You coach them to take care of their body.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Now it's a split second decision, you know, Like we
- 7:13Speaker 1: always say get down or get out of bounds, right,
- 7:16Speaker 1: But to say, listen, slide at you know, three yards
- 7:19Speaker 1: before you get the defender, I don't know that you
- 7:21Speaker 1: can realistically do that, just because they're coming from all angles, right,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and the speed of the play and.
- 7:27Speaker 2: What you see.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So you know, our general rule is is get down
- 7:30Speaker 1: or get out of bounds.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You know, Steve Young, who I was fortunate to coach,
- 7:37Speaker 1: Steve Young, did not slide. Steve Young Dove and Steve
- 7:41Speaker 1: and Mike Vick did not slide. Mike Vick, Dove and
- 7:45Speaker 1: Mike vic and Steve Young dove instead of slid because
- 7:48Speaker 1: they knew that they.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Were protecting their head.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And if you recall when they played, targeting wasn't a
- 7:53Speaker 1: big deal, right, I mean, I don't even know if
- 7:55Speaker 1: there's a penalty for it, okay, but they dove to
- 7:58Speaker 1: protect their head because they felt they could get under
- 8:01Speaker 1: the contact, all right, and the contact would maybe hit
- 8:04Speaker 1: their back. You never see them slide, So maybe there
- 8:07Speaker 1: should be a rule you can't slide, you know, maybe
- 8:09Speaker 1: you have to dive, okay, And then people say, well,
- 8:12Speaker 1: then you're leading with your head. Yeah, but your head's
- 8:14Speaker 1: this far off the ground rather than this far off
- 8:16Speaker 1: the ground getting hit by a shoulder pad. So I
- 8:19Speaker 1: don't know there's a solution in there somewhere. I'm not
- 8:22Speaker 1: the guy that has it. I'm not you know, me
- 8:24Speaker 1: complaining about it is not going to change it. Us
- 8:26Speaker 1: trying to work through it is is the thing that's
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, most constructive for our football team. Well, we
- 8:39Speaker 1: ran the ball actually pretty well. Uh we didn't run
- 8:43Speaker 1: it a lot because we didn't have the ball a lot.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So I think it was more a function of, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: we struggled to get them off the field on defense
- 8:50Speaker 1: as we all know, you know, especially in those first
- 8:53Speaker 1: two drives and so uh, and then we had a
- 8:55Speaker 1: couple drops on third down in the past game that
- 8:58Speaker 1: didn't extend drives. So what you'll see out of our
- 9:01Speaker 1: offense is, you know, balance when we can be balanced,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and we have to extend drives and we have to
- 9:06Speaker 1: get our offense the ball more so that they can
- 9:08Speaker 1: run the ball more. But in terms of our ability
- 9:11Speaker 1: to run the ball, we ran it against the front
- 9:14Speaker 1: that was really really I mean that's a really good
- 9:16Speaker 1: defensive football team Maryland. You know, they were top forty
- 9:19Speaker 1: in every category last year in the country. Uh, we
- 9:23Speaker 1: ran it better than the statistics would would indicate.
- 9:26Speaker 2: But we need we need to run it more and
- 9:28Speaker 2: we need to run it better.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yeah, defense takes some time or the season goes on.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We're guys just with other I mean, no, it wasn't
- 9:41Speaker 1: a very good performance at all. It was very disappointing performance.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think you know, i'd be really honest and frank
- 9:47Speaker 1: with you and transparent is it's tough to duplicate the speed,
- 9:55Speaker 1: replicate the speed that you're going to see on game
- 9:58Speaker 1: day when you're going against the scout team off offense. Therefore,
- 10:01Speaker 1: sometimes an angle to the ball that is successful in
- 10:05Speaker 1: practice is not going to be successful in a game.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And what happened many many times is our angles were
- 10:10Speaker 1: a little too wide and we couldn't recover back inside
- 10:14Speaker 1: to make a tackle. There's a couple of times where
- 10:17Speaker 1: you know, we got outran because we took a poor angle.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So it's it's it's refining points of aim, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and it's it's understanding you know immediately that the speed
- 10:32Speaker 1: during a game, especially against a team like Maryland who's talented,
- 10:35Speaker 1: is going to be different than it is in practice
- 10:38Speaker 1: against the Service team. And it's typically your younger guys,
- 10:40Speaker 1: your walk on guys, your developmental guys. It's just it's
- 10:44Speaker 1: no no negative towards your service team. It's just a
- 10:48Speaker 1: fact of life. So we have to do better there.
- 10:51Speaker 1: We did not tackle well, you know, we we we
- 10:55Speaker 1: we didn't bring our feet on contact. We had way
- 10:58Speaker 1: too many of that, you know, the shoulder tackles. You know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm sure my dad was watching it, you know, pitching
- 11:05Speaker 1: a fit because when you tackle, you open up your
- 11:07Speaker 1: chest and your wrap that's how you tackle.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You don't do this.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Uh, I haven't called him because I'm afraid of what
- 11:13Speaker 1: he's gonna say to me. To be honest with you,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and uh, in terms of our ability to try to
- 11:19Speaker 1: be violent, we were we were trying to be violent.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Guys were throwing their bodies around. So it's taking better angles,
- 11:25Speaker 1: it's understanding the speed of the game. It's wrapping on
- 11:28Speaker 1: contract contact, it's running our feet through contact. Those are
- 11:31Speaker 1: the things that we have to do better to perform better.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's not that we were out of position in terms
- 11:36Speaker 1: of missed assignments. It just we have to we have
- 11:38Speaker 1: to be more precise in our execution. And you know,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I don't ever want to use the excuse that it's
- 11:43Speaker 1: going to take us a while to learn this. You know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: we've had a lot of practice, We've had a lot
- 11:47Speaker 1: of snaps, and uh, we've just got it. We've got
- 11:50Speaker 1: to make improvement now.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It's always so important to get off a fast start.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I mean, there's sticky would say that the team that
- 12:01Speaker 1: scores first wins about ninety percent of the games in
- 12:03Speaker 1: college football over the last six or seven years. So
- 12:07Speaker 1: I think for confidence, certainly, it's important to get off
- 12:11Speaker 1: to a fast start. You know, But they're gonna have
- 12:14Speaker 1: something to say about that too. You know, they're gonna
- 12:16Speaker 1: be thinking the same thing and they're gonna come in here.
- 12:19Speaker 1: They're they're coming off a tough loss with the same
- 12:21Speaker 1: type of attitude as we are. So I think the
- 12:23Speaker 1: most important thing that we can do as a football
- 12:25Speaker 1: team is prepare all week for Merrimack and understand their
- 12:28Speaker 1: schemes and understand their tendencies and their personnel. Have a
- 12:32Speaker 1: great understanding of what we're supposed to do. But on Saturday,
- 12:35Speaker 1: go out and and say, hey, we have a standard.
- 12:38Speaker 1: All right, we have a way we do things, and
- 12:39Speaker 1: we're gonna play to that standard. We're gonna play the
- 12:41Speaker 1: way we play and regardless of you know, how it starts,
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's just continue to just push and push and push
- 12:48Speaker 1: and push and try to be better every time we
- 12:51Speaker 1: put our hand in the dirt to play the next play.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Arl Robinson, when you're leading rusher thirty four yards, you
- 12:56Speaker 3: did have a fifteen yard er. What did you do well? Again,
- 13:00Speaker 3: marilynk better than the durobacks? And what does he work
- 13:02Speaker 3: at the table? What do you expect from him over
- 13:04Speaker 3: the course of your recruiting and catching it?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Asses? Well, I think that he'll be in the rotation
- 13:08Speaker 1: with those other guys. I mean, you know, the first
- 13:10Speaker 1: run of the game, Cam ripped off a sixteen yarder.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I thought Cam played really, really well. I think he's tough, physical,
- 13:17Speaker 1: he understands what to do. And I'm not trying to
- 13:20Speaker 1: avoid your question, Darrell. You know you want to have
- 13:23Speaker 1: some depth, right. We want to be able to play Cam.
- 13:26Speaker 1: We want to get Victor more carries. We want, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: Jaden mel to go in there because he brings us
- 13:32Speaker 1: a little bit different element, the speed and the quickness.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And then drell Is he's still a young player, but
- 13:37Speaker 1: he's a powerful guy who is multi talented and he
- 13:41Speaker 1: does have some burst. And I think he saw you
- 13:43Speaker 1: talking about the run that he made late. You know,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you get a team and it's later in a game,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and if you're wearing a team out a little bit,
- 13:50Speaker 1: he's a guy can come in with some fresh legs
- 13:51Speaker 1: and poplin for you. The other thing about him is
- 13:54Speaker 1: he's just a great kid with a tremendous attitude and
- 13:56Speaker 1: tremendous work ethic. You know, he's a positive addition to
- 13:59Speaker 1: this team.
- 13:59Speaker 4: And ways, if you have to go on Saturday, what
- 14:04Speaker 4: did you like about his performance.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Uh, he's just he's calm, cool.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Uh, it's hard to frazzle him. He understands what we're
- 14:14Speaker 1: trying to do on offense, you know, he he he
- 14:18Speaker 1: throws with touch, he can throw deep. He's got good
- 14:22Speaker 1: leadership ability. But the main thing is, you know, it's
- 14:25Speaker 1: just his demeanor on the field. You know, I think
- 14:28Speaker 1: our players trust him and respect him, and he'll make
- 14:31Speaker 1: good decisions and protect the ball, and those are you know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: we've talked about that before, I think a couple of
- 14:36Speaker 1: weeks ago. What are the most important qualities you look for?
- 14:38Speaker 1: Somebody asked that question. It's taking care of the football
- 14:40Speaker 1: and making good decisions. So he'll do that if he
- 14:43Speaker 1: has to play. And you know, Tucker will play if
- 14:45Speaker 1: he has to play, and Cole play if he has
- 14:47Speaker 1: to play, and they'll all they'll all do the best
- 14:50Speaker 1: they can. So go ahead, follow up.
- 14:53Speaker 4: It's easy to the negative stuff from a game.
- 14:58Speaker 2: What did you see that you like?
- 15:00Speaker 4: I mean, was it wide receivers getting open here and
- 15:03Speaker 4: their vats.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And place I liked? I did like the way that
- 15:11Speaker 1: we got open. Obviously, Skyler, you know, made an impression,
- 15:15Speaker 1: even though easy dropped a couple of balls. He was
- 15:17Speaker 1: able to get open deep once and you know he
- 15:19Speaker 1: didn't come up with a catch in on that curl,
- 15:21Speaker 1: he was able to get open. I liked the way
- 15:24Speaker 1: our offensive line played. I think they did a good
- 15:26Speaker 1: job in the run game, and I think they did
- 15:27Speaker 1: a really good job in protection.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I liked it.
- 15:32Speaker 1: You know, I didn't feel us slump our shoulders at
- 15:36Speaker 1: any time as a football team.
- 15:37Speaker 2: As tough as it was.
- 15:39Speaker 1: You know, it was hard as it was going, as
- 15:41Speaker 1: poorly as it was going in that game, and I guess,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you know, you're always anxious to see how team's gonna
- 15:48Speaker 1: come back from from a game like that, and so,
- 15:53Speaker 1: you know, I like the way they responded on on Saturday,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I'm sorry, on Sunday and on Monday and today, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know that's what I expect from them.
- 16:00Speaker 2: But there's some.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Positives in there, you know, and you've got to find
- 16:05Speaker 1: enough success right as you're trying to build it that
- 16:08Speaker 1: it creates, you know, the belief that you can attain success.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And I feel like our players still believe that. You know,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I listen, Maryland is a is a really good football team.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And that does not excuse us at all. For you know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: getting beat fifty to seven. But there were some good things,
- 16:27Speaker 1: just not enough and not on a consistent basis.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you like.
- 16:36Speaker 1: That, Okay, I like it a lot. It's something that
- 16:43Speaker 1: I've obviously been accustomed to using in my career. I
- 16:46Speaker 1: think it's a real benefit to the game for everybody
- 16:53Speaker 1: on defense. We move that helmet around a little bit
- 16:55Speaker 1: depending on who's in the game, so it takes, you know,
- 16:58Speaker 1: some work on the sidelines to get on the right guy.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Sometimes it's Coach Brock talking to the middle linebackers. Sometimes
- 17:04Speaker 1: it's Dalton talking to you know, a safety, so we
- 17:08Speaker 1: kind of moving around a little bit. The other thing
- 17:10Speaker 1: that I really like is the video on the sideline.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It's different than in the NFL. You know, you see
- 17:17Speaker 1: the tablet. The NFL does not have access to video.
- 17:20Speaker 1: We have access to video. So after every series, you
- 17:23Speaker 1: get to watch the sideline copy of the play from
- 17:26Speaker 1: your video guy. You get to watch the end zone
- 17:29Speaker 1: copy of the play from your video guy. And then
- 17:32Speaker 1: they put the TV feed in as well, and so
- 17:35Speaker 1: you're able to watch every play. You could really watch
- 17:37Speaker 1: it right after the play, but you'd have to get
- 17:39Speaker 1: it plugged back in to get the next plays, but
- 17:41Speaker 1: every series you get it, I mean, a great look
- 17:43Speaker 1: at what happened, and it's really good for our players
- 17:47Speaker 1: in terms of making adjustments. You know, sometimes things are
- 17:50Speaker 1: happening so fast out there that you know, they don't
- 17:54Speaker 1: exactly know what happened on a particular play. So when
- 17:57Speaker 1: when they can go back and review it and see
- 17:59Speaker 1: it and you can talk them through it on the sideline,
- 18:02Speaker 1: it's easier to make adjustments.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 18:05Speaker 1: You know, you're not allowed to show the officials the replay.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I asked the guy one time, I said, I know
- 18:12Speaker 1: I can't show it to you, but can I tell
- 18:14Speaker 1: you what I saw?
- 18:16Speaker 2: You know, so I believe it is Yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I mean, I think the rules that they changed, I
- 18:25Speaker 1: think not stopping the clock after a first down with
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know, unless it's within two minutes at the end
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the half of the game, I think that's a positive.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I think it keeps the you know, the pace of
- 18:34Speaker 1: play going. You know, the two minute Who always called
- 18:37Speaker 1: the two minute warning, but it's called a two minute
- 18:39Speaker 1: time out in college football.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I like that. Uh.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It puts more inphasis on game management, which is something
- 18:46Speaker 1: that I love about the game. You know, it is
- 18:48Speaker 1: the end of the half, the end of the game,
- 18:49Speaker 1: how you're going to manage the time and timeouts and
- 18:52Speaker 1: you know, try to gain a possession or or you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: get a team off the field or operate in a
- 18:56Speaker 1: two minute So yeah, I think it. I think those
- 18:59Speaker 1: are positive of additions. I think right now for me,
- 19:03Speaker 1: the only rule that that I struggle with is the
- 19:06Speaker 1: is the targeting rule, you know, and I think it's
- 19:10Speaker 1: probably always going to be that way, you know, because
- 19:12Speaker 1: you're balance and player safety with the actuality of what
- 19:15Speaker 1: happens on the field.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Said you didn't think that the players flopped their shoulders
- 19:21Speaker 4: or anything, but right after the game, you didn't mention
- 19:25Speaker 4: body language that she didn't like and the effort that
- 19:27Speaker 4: she didn't like. Have you looked through things differently since
- 19:32Speaker 4: then or your ada? There wasn't quit effort language.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I when I was saying body language, if I was
- 19:40Speaker 1: more clear out of meant on the sideline. You know,
- 19:42Speaker 1: I didn't feel like our our sideline demeanor was what
- 19:45Speaker 1: it needed to be. And you know, guys from snap
- 19:49Speaker 1: to whistle, they were okay, they were okay, it was
- 19:51Speaker 1: our effort good enough. No, but I probably will never
- 19:54Speaker 1: walk in here and tell you that it was good enough.
- 19:57Speaker 1: When you look at the film, Uh, you do you
- 20:00Speaker 1: see guys flying to the football. You do see effort.
- 20:02Speaker 1: But we're always going to press that and we've always
- 20:05Speaker 1: got to be better that. I just felt like, are
- 20:08Speaker 1: we didn't have the energy, the intensity, the passion, uh
- 20:15Speaker 1: that we needed to have to play the way we
- 20:19Speaker 1: needed to play in a game like that against a
- 20:21Speaker 1: team like that, And that was disappointed to me. I
- 20:24Speaker 1: felt that they're today now. Important thing is not feeling
- 20:27Speaker 1: it on a Tuesday. It's you know what happens on
- 20:29Speaker 1: a on a Saturday. When you get the lead or
- 20:31Speaker 1: you behind. You know, you've got to you've got to
- 20:33Speaker 1: play the same. You've got to act the same. You've
- 20:35Speaker 1: got to have the same energy, the same focus, the
- 20:37Speaker 1: same intensity whether you're up or down or in tiede
- 20:40Speaker 1: in a game. And I felt like we got to
- 20:42Speaker 1: we let it get to us a little bit, and
- 20:44Speaker 1: that that concerned me. I believe that it falls on
- 20:51Speaker 1: each individual to get themselves going. I mean, uh, if
- 20:55Speaker 1: it doesn't start in here, all right, it's it's it's usual,
- 21:00Speaker 1: not real, you know, if it takes somebody yelling at
- 21:03Speaker 1: me or getting in my face, to get me, challenging
- 21:07Speaker 1: me to get me going. You know, I might not
- 21:09Speaker 1: have it, So I believe it starts in here, and
- 21:11Speaker 1: then I believe, yeah, leaders can can enhance that, right,
- 21:15Speaker 1: but you know, we're still identifying who some of the
- 21:19Speaker 1: leaders are. And then the other thing is in this
- 21:20Speaker 1: day and age, with this generation, there's less interaction. You know,
- 21:27Speaker 1: they're on their phones more, right, and you'll see guys
- 21:30Speaker 1: sitting at the table and everyone will be on their
- 21:31Speaker 1: phone rather than talking to each other. And said this,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I might be texting you even though we're sitting right
- 21:35Speaker 1: here and we could talk, right, And so I think
- 21:39Speaker 1: it falls on us, and I'm me to teach them
- 21:42Speaker 1: how to lead, how to challenge each other in a
- 21:46Speaker 1: demanding way that's not demeaning, condescending, attacking. And we had
- 21:51Speaker 1: that conversation on Sunday night. You know, how do you
- 21:54Speaker 1: talk to your teammate when things aren't going well? And
- 21:58Speaker 1: in order to talk to your teammate, you have to
- 22:00Speaker 1: have earned the right to talk to them and have
- 22:03Speaker 1: them trust you. So are your actions every single day
- 22:06Speaker 1: demonstrating what you're asking your teammate to behave like So
- 22:11Speaker 1: you know, listen, we're in college, and these are young
- 22:14Speaker 1: men and there's a lot of lessons we have to
- 22:15Speaker 1: teach them rather than other than just how to line
- 22:18Speaker 1: up and run a play. Good question, Okay, thank you,
- 22:24Speaker 1: well just asking you.
- 22:25Speaker 4: You said you saw the efforts the energy practice today.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you know in these guys to bring it in.
- 22:34Speaker 1: A game or is that well, it's it's to be
- 22:38Speaker 1: determined until I see it, until we do it, until
- 22:41Speaker 1: you see it, until everyone sees it and everyone feels it.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Do I believe it's in there?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yes? I do.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I do.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I do, you know, but yes, I have to see.
- 22:51Speaker 1: It and they have to see it and they have
- 22:53Speaker 1: to feel it, and I believe that they will.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I believe they will.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Expectations for what you're expect Saturday until.
- 23:05Speaker 2: We you know.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Here, Here's the thing is, when you start talking about
- 23:10Speaker 1: we expect to win or win by this much, what
- 23:12Speaker 1: we expect is to go out and play the very
- 23:13Speaker 1: best football we are absolutely we are capable of playing.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I think that's what you have to do.
- 23:17Speaker 1: We're going to prepare this week as hard as we can,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and then we're going to We're having the objective of
- 23:22Speaker 1: going out on Saturday and playing every play to our
- 23:25Speaker 1: maximum potential every single play, you know, and uh, if
- 23:30Speaker 1: we do that, then you know, we have an opportunity
- 23:33Speaker 1: to have a positive result, and if we don't, it
- 23:35Speaker 1: could be tough. So, you know, I think that's the
- 23:37Speaker 1: best way to approach any game is just keep it,
- 23:40Speaker 1: you know, be where you are, you know, and focus
- 23:43Speaker 1: on the things you can control. Don't worry about the result,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you know. I guess they call it the process. I
- 23:49Speaker 1: call it, Hey, this is the way we're going to
- 23:50Speaker 1: do things. So that's a good question. They're all good questions.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Thanks everybody, have a good day.
