- 0:00Exodus chapter 22 verse one, If a man shall steal an ox or a
- 0:06sheep and kill it or sell it, he shall restore 5 ox for an ox and
- 0:11four sheep for a sheep. So you can see here that it was
- 0:14not becoming of a man to steal because it was going to have to
- 0:19be repaid and the interest rate was very high.
- 0:22The return on it was very high. So he took a big risk whenever
- 0:27he decided to steal something that was not him.
- 0:30Is, and look at how Moses here is relaying all of the mind of
- 0:34God and the thoughts of God and the things of God unto the
- 0:38elders of Israel, so that whenever they bring their cases
- 0:42unto them, they can judge accordingly.
- 0:45That's the purpose of this chapter here, friends, is you
- 0:48need to know that Jethro has told Moses that he needed to
- 0:52give all of the elders the ability to hear the people, and
- 0:59they did not have to wait to talk to Moses and stand in line
- 1:04for a year to be able to get to him.
- 1:07Verse 2. And if a thief be found breaking
- 1:09up and be stricken that he die, there shall no blood be shed for
- 1:14him. He was a thief, friends, he was
- 1:16breaking in, he got caught in the act and he lost his life,
- 1:20and that's payment enough. 3 And if the sun be risen upon him,
- 1:26there shall be bloodshed for him, for he should make full
- 1:30restitution. If he have nothing, then he
- 1:33shall be sold for his theft. So if he's found out, he needs
- 1:38to make everything right, and if he cannot, then he has to go
- 1:42into servitude for and if the theft be certainly found in his
- 1:48hand alive, whether it be ox or donkey or sheep, he shall
- 1:52restore double. So if he's caught in the act and
- 1:55the animals still alive, not only does the animal get taken,
- 1:59but then he has to repay it back twice.
- 2:02Five. And if a man shall cause a field
- 2:04or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and
- 2:08shall feed in another man's field, of the best of his own
- 2:12field or the best of his own vineyard, shall he make
- 2:15restitution? So there it is, friends.
- 2:17If he thinks he can get away with just sending his animals in
- 2:21there and they eat all the crops, he has to pay it back,
- 2:24Friends. 6 And if fire break out and catching thorns, so that the
- 2:28stacks of corn or the standing corn, or the field consumed with
- 2:34it, he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
- 2:38So if your fire got out of control and it burned up the
- 2:42crops, you've got to pay it back, friends. 7 And if a man
- 2:46shall deliver unto his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it
- 2:49be stolen out of the man's house, if the thief be found,
- 2:53let him pay double. So there you go, friends.
- 2:56If you put something into your friend's house and it got broken
- 2:59into, now we're on the lookout for the thief, and when and we
- 3:03find him, he has to pay twice. A If the thief be not found,
- 3:08then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges
- 3:11to see whether he have put his hand into his neighbors goods.
- 3:15So it's for the judges to try to figure out if the man was the
- 3:18one that took it, or was it actually stolen by a thief. 9
- 3:23For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, donkey,
- 3:27sheep, clothing, for any other manner of lost thing which
- 3:30another challenges to be his, the cause of both parties shall
- 3:34come before the judges, of whom the judges shall condemn.
- 3:39He shall pay double to his neighbor.
- 3:41So whoever is found to be guilty, in whichever party is to
- 3:46have to pay back twice as much. Then if a man deliver unto his
- 3:53neighbor a donkey, an ox, or sheep, or any beast, he keep it,
- 3:57and it dies, or is hurt, or is driven away, and no one sees it.
- 4:0311 Then shall an oath of the Lord be between them both, that
- 4:07he has not put his hand into his neighbor's goods.
- 4:10And the owner of it shall accept it the of it, and he shall not
- 4:15make it good. So here he's saying, It was out
- 4:18of my control, there was nothing I could do.
- 4:20I solemnly swear before the judges here that I have done
- 4:24nothing wrong. And that is enough.
- 4:26And they have to both accept it and go their own way. 12 And if
- 4:31it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner
- 4:36of it. So there you see that if it is
- 4:38stolen that he has to pay it back. 13 If it be torn in
- 4:44pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not
- 4:47make good that which was torn. So it was out of his control.
- 4:51If it was torn to pieces, then he does not have to pay it back.
- 4:5414 And if a man borrow all of his neighbor, and it be hurt or
- 4:59die, the owner of it being not with it, he shall surely make it
- 5:03good. So the principle here is
- 5:06whatever you borrow, you have to bring it back and you have to
- 5:10make it right if something happens. 15 But if the owner of
- 5:14it be with it, he shall not make it good, for if it be a higher
- 5:19thing, it came for his hire. So here he's saying if it was
- 5:23completely out of his control and he could not save it, then
- 5:29he is to be excused. 16 And if a man entice it made that is not
- 5:33betrothed and lie with her, he shall surely endow out, endow
- 5:38her to be his wife. So here we're going to get into
- 5:41a little section where God wants us to understand just how
- 5:46precious virginity is. And we are not to take the
- 5:51virginity of a young lady without the intention of
- 5:56marriage. And that is still applicable to
- 5:59today. And if easy come, easy go.
- 6:02And if you cheapen the goods, friends, then they will not be
- 6:06held in high regard. And it is in the interest of the
- 6:09young lady to hold out until marriage, to make sure that she
- 6:14has her security so that the man doesn't just get the goods and
- 6:19go on his way. That this try it before you buy
- 6:22it mentality is broken, friends. And a woman needs to understand
- 6:27that whenever she cheapens the good, it is cheap in the eyes of
- 6:32the buyer. And you need to understand that
- 6:35the enemy would love for us to just sleep around and hop from
- 6:39bed to bed putting notches on our doorposts.
- 6:43But you also need to know that God is the one who has the
- 6:48sanctity of marriage. God instituted marriage.
- 6:51God desires for one man and one woman to come together in holy
- 6:56matrimony and to outlast everything that is thrown at
- 7:00them in this life and to make it to the end.
- 7:03And there is much reward in that.
- 7:05Friends, never forget it. 17 If her father utterly refused to
- 7:12give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of
- 7:16virgins. So if he took her virginity, he
- 7:19has to give the dowry as if he's going to marry her, even if the
- 7:23father says absolutely not. 18 You shall not suffer a witch to
- 7:29live. That is a period.
- 7:31There is no comma. That is, that is exactly what it
- 7:35says, friends. And you can see all this New Age
- 7:38garbage that has popped up, all of this disgusting Ness that has
- 7:42popped up with the wicked culture, with the satanic
- 7:45culture, and God says surely they need to be disposed of.
- 7:51And you can see that today there is much grace and much
- 7:55long-suffering in the sight of God, that he allows them to live
- 8:00in a free society and to go out and to act it out and to go out
- 8:05and to propagate it and to act in a very anti God way.
- 8:11And God allows it and he doesn't have to, but he does.
- 8:15And we live in a society that you have the freedom of
- 8:20expression, the freedom of whatever religion you want.
- 8:23And there's a double edged sword there, friends.
- 8:26But you can see all the way back here in this camp of Israel in
- 8:30this purity, friends. And this is what God would have
- 8:35us to do. And He makes no apologies for
- 8:39it, Friends. 19 Whosoever lies with the beast shall surely be
- 8:46put to death. What a disgusting thing that God
- 8:49has to write in here. But He sees it all.
- 8:51He knows everything. He knows all of our
- 8:54propensities. And you can see that there have
- 8:57been times in the past where God has brought judgment upon the
- 9:00land because of these very disgusting, deplorable acts.
- 9:06And He will not put up with it forever, friends.
- 9:09There will be a reckoning. 20 He that sacrifices unto any God
- 9:16except the Lord, only he shall be utterly destroyed.
- 9:21So he says, you shall have no other gods besides him.
- 9:24And he is a jealous God, and he's not jealous of us, but he's
- 9:27jealous for us. 21 You shall neither vex a stranger nor
- 9:33oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
- 9:36Look at how God cares for the pilgrims.
- 9:40He cares for the strangers. He cares for those who aren't
- 9:44even Israelites. We know that the Israelites were
- 9:47called to be pure and to be a peculiar people chosen unto
- 9:52himself, and to be the priesthood for all of the entire
- 9:56globe, for all the world. They were to represent God.
- 9:59But God cares for every nation, every people group, every
- 10:03tongue, every nationality friends.
- 10:05God cares for every single one of them, and he wants them to
- 10:08know that they were once strangers.
- 10:11They were once pilgrims. 22 You shall not afflict any widow or
- 10:19fatherless child. So we know from the book of
- 10:21James that true religion is taking care of the widows and
- 10:24the orphans in their time of distress.
- 10:26We see that God puts a major emphasis on us taking care of
- 10:32the widows and the orphans. 23 If you afflict them in any way,
- 10:40and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry. 24
- 10:46And my wrath shall grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword,
- 10:52and your wives shall be widows, and your children's fatherless.
- 10:57Look at this great turn of events.
- 11:00When you oppress the widow and the orphan, your very wife and
- 11:05children will be widows and orphans. 25 And if you lend
- 11:09money to any of my people that is poor by you, you shall not be
- 11:16to him as a user, neither shall you lay upon him user, so he's
- 11:22saying, dollar for dollar, no interest. 26 And if you at all
- 11:29take your neighbor's clothing to pledge, you shall deliver it to
- 11:34him by the time the sun goes down.
- 11:37So you can see that God is saying, I do not want them to be
- 11:41cold. If they tell you, hey, I will
- 11:44give you my coat and surety that I'll be right back, I'm going to
- 11:48go grab the money. I'll be right back if even if
- 11:52they don't pay you the money, you return the coat to them so
- 11:55that they're not cold at night. What an amazing God we serve. 27
- 12:02For that is his only covering, It is his clothing for his skin.
- 12:07How shall he sleep? And it shall come to pass that
- 12:12when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.
- 12:15He is a gracious God. He is an amazing God.
- 12:18He's a loving God. And he knows what's best for us,
- 12:21even if it doesn't make sense. And our finite minds, the size
- 12:25of the soda can, whenever we try to approach God from a
- 12:28moralistic approach, friends, it never works out.
- 12:31God is so long-suffering, and he gives us mercies that are new
- 12:36every single day, and if you woke up this morning, he's not
- 12:39done with you. 28 You shall not revile the gods, nor court, nor
- 12:44curse the ruler of your people. So what is he saying?
- 12:48He's saying, Do not speak evil of the judges in the land. 29
- 12:55You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe fruits and of
- 13:00your liquors, and the first born of the sons you shall give to
- 13:04me. So we can see that this is the
- 13:06entire reason that God accepted Abel.
- 13:08But he rejected Cain, because Cain gave him the leftovers, but
- 13:12Abel gave him the first fruits. And that is what we are called
- 13:16to do. If you make $10, ten $1.00
- 13:19bills, the very first one belongs unto God and then the 9
- 13:24is blessed money. Friends, the nine God will take
- 13:28and he will expand and God will multiply.
- 13:31And God math is amazing. 30 Likewise shall you do with your
- 13:40ox, your sheep. Seven days it shall be with his
- 13:44dam. And on the 8th day you shall
- 13:46give it to me. So you can see here that for
- 13:48seven days the young 1 is to be with the mother, but on the 8th
- 13:53day they are to be offered unto God.
- 13:56We'll end on 31 And you shall be holy men unto me.
- 14:01Neither shall you eat any of the flesh that is torn and beast of
- 14:04the field. You shall cast it to the dogs.
- 14:07He's saying, have a little self respect, don't eat the roadkill,
- 14:14have some dignity for yourself. You are a wholly peculiar people
- 14:20unto me and I expect for you to act like it.
- 14:24Remember who you belong to. You're a son or a daughter of
- 14:28the Most High King. We praise God, Hallelujah, that
- 14:31we know him and are known by him.
- 14:33The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that's who we serve, the
- 14:36God of Israel, the Jewish king, we love him fully, man, fully.
- 14:41God, I hope you've been blessed by this amazing chapter in God's
- 14:45Word. I know I sure have.
- 14:47I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 14:49I love you. Let us pray.
- 14:51God, we thank you for your word. We thank you for everything that
- 14:54you've done. Lord, we thank you for opening
- 14:56up our hearts and minds to be able to absorb what it is that
- 14:59you want to say to us today. We love you God, and it's in
- 15:03King Jesus, holy and precious name that I pray.
- 15:06Amen.
