- 0:14Speaker 1: Speaker 0 1.
- 0:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Happy Thursday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell show. Once again,
- 0:36Speaker 3: marching towards the weekend where Utah football is back in action.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Saturday night whiteout game against the Kansas Jayhawks. Looking forward
- 0:47Speaker 3: to that Utah mammoth back in action, running Utes basketball
- 0:52Speaker 3: with some exhibition. Nice things to see in an exhibition
- 0:55Speaker 3: contest from Alex Jensen's crew. We'll talk about that with
- 0:59Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa. Who's going to join us on the show today.
- 1:03Speaker 3: We'll also have a little dish in with dev at
- 1:06Speaker 3: one o'clock. Eric Weddle will join us at noon. The
- 1:10Speaker 3: Daily Dump, full of a bunch of random stories. As usual,
- 1:14Speaker 3: we'll try to take a look ahead. There's some interesting
- 1:16Speaker 3: Thursday night games in college football. There's, of course, a
- 1:20Speaker 3: Thursday night NFL game to have an opinion or two about.
- 1:24Speaker 3: And we'll be off and rolling. If you're paying attention
- 1:27Speaker 3: to WNBA playoffs and the fallout of Caitlin Clark no
- 1:36Speaker 3: longer being involved for the WNBA. That is something that, look,
- 1:40Speaker 3: the radar is starting to fill up. Major League Baseball postseason. Obviously,
- 1:47Speaker 3: regular season hockey back with the Utah Mammoth Red Hot. Utah, BYU,
- 1:52Speaker 3: big news coming out of both of those schools. So
- 1:55Speaker 3: I would understand if the WNBA is starting to get
- 1:58Speaker 3: pushed to the edges of your interest, but there is
- 2:01Speaker 3: some controversy going going on in these playoffs and in
- 2:05Speaker 3: that league that now is rudderless and potentially hiring a
- 2:10Speaker 3: new CEO, a new commissioner sooner than later. I want
- 2:16Speaker 3: to have a conversation today about how many wins you
- 2:22Speaker 3: get from your star players in a football season. How
- 2:27Speaker 3: many wins is way Sean Parker worth? How many wins
- 2:33Speaker 3: is Devin damn peer worth over the alternative in Devin's case,
- 2:40Speaker 3: because of the confidence we might not, we have now
- 2:43Speaker 3: with bird Ficklin, maybe it's not quite as significant, right?
- 2:47Speaker 3: The drop off. Maybe you're a big enough of a
- 2:50Speaker 3: Daniel brave fan that even without way, Sean, you think
- 2:53Speaker 3: that this Utah football team is a 10 win team
- 2:56Speaker 3: or an 11 win team or whatever your hope is.
- 3:00Speaker 3: The reason I want to have this question today is
- 3:02Speaker 3: is because your rival, BYU, is going to have to
- 3:06Speaker 3: have this question answered sooner than later, in earnest. This
- 3:11Speaker 3: conversation is happening down there in Provo, and it alters
- 3:14Speaker 3: everything for the Big 12 Conference.
- 3:17Speaker 4: L.J.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Martin, the news broke yesterday, and it was kind of
- 3:21Speaker 3: a slow news break because we found out on Tuesday
- 3:24Speaker 3: that L.J. Martin was out for the Iowa State game,
- 3:27Speaker 3: that Isaiah Glasker was out for the Iowa State game.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Sione Moa, The second best running back on that BYU
- 3:34Speaker 3: roster has been out and remains out. But LJ Martin
- 3:40Speaker 3: is the returning conference offensive player of the year in
- 3:43Speaker 3: the Big 12. Whether you love it or hate it,
- 3:47Speaker 3: he is a guy that until somebody dethrones him is
- 3:50Speaker 3: the best running back in the league. What we've seen
- 3:55Speaker 3: from him so far and what we've seen from BYU
- 3:57Speaker 3: so far is makes them look like they deserve to
- 4:01Speaker 3: be where they are at in the rankings in the
- 4:03Speaker 3: Big 12. How many wins is LJ Martin worth to BYU?
- 4:09Speaker 3: How many wins is Isaiah Glasgow worth to BYU? Is
- 4:12Speaker 3: he enough of a big star and enough of a
- 4:14Speaker 3: big difference maker on that defense to put him in
- 4:18Speaker 3: that conversation? Last year's production went down. Two years ago,
- 4:22Speaker 3: he was one of the more disruptive guys in a
- 4:25Speaker 3: very disruptive defense. They have Cato Luave this year, the
- 4:30Speaker 3: transfer from Cal. And that takes a little bit of
- 4:34Speaker 3: the sting off. We were talking yesterday about depth at
- 4:40Speaker 3: the University of Utah. This is the flip side of
- 4:42Speaker 3: that same coin, right? Depth is wonderful to have. Depth
- 4:47Speaker 3: is fantastic. How many wins do you have to shave
- 4:52Speaker 3: off of your expectation if a star player or players win?
- 4:57Speaker 3: becomes unavailable. There are very few fan bases with the
- 5:01Speaker 3: same recent history of experiencing this, of knowing what this
- 5:06Speaker 3: feels like, like Utah fans do. I will die on
- 5:14Speaker 3: the hill that if cam rising is healthy and ready
- 5:18Speaker 3: to go and, and Brant Keithy is healthy and ready
- 5:22Speaker 3: to go. And you'd never have issues with Lander Barton
- 5:26Speaker 3: staying a hundred percent healthy and all these different things
- 5:29Speaker 3: that happened to that university of Utah football team that
- 5:33Speaker 3: had a chance to go back to back to back championships.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Injuries are what killed the Andy Ludwig run injuries are
- 5:42Speaker 3: what killed the, the good vibes of that whole atmosphere,
- 5:47Speaker 3: that whole relationship injuries and the way that they were
- 5:50Speaker 3: handled is the reason that we will eventually probably have
- 5:55Speaker 3: to convince cam rising to come back and have his
- 5:58Speaker 3: name put on the side of the stadium in that
- 6:01Speaker 3: ring of honor, instead of having him be like a
- 6:04Speaker 3: guy who's constantly here and always talking about Utah football, right?
- 6:08Speaker 3: That bridge needs to be rebuilt. And that's because of injuries.
- 6:13Speaker 3: We saw what it looks like when you don't have
- 6:17Speaker 3: your star players available. I mean, BYU is off to
- 6:23Speaker 3: a really strong start. There were some ugly moments in
- 6:27Speaker 3: that TCU game, in an ugly game overall, but how
- 6:33Speaker 3: many wins are your star players worth? And by the way,
- 6:37Speaker 3: this applies to every sport. This applies to every football
- 6:42Speaker 3: team that you root for. I'm a San Francisco 49ers fan.
- 6:48Speaker 3: They are, because of the way that their roster is structured...
- 6:51Speaker 3: They are excessively dependent on health and on the star players.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You got a bunch of guys that are in the
- 6:59Speaker 3: top five, top 10 pay scale wise at their position
- 7:03Speaker 3: in the national football league. And because of that, your
- 7:06Speaker 3: depth gets compromised sometimes, not sometimes in a hard cap
- 7:10Speaker 3: league all the time. When the 49ers are healthy, we
- 7:16Speaker 3: know what it looks like. We see what it looks
- 7:17Speaker 3: like when they're not healthy. when Fred Warner goes down,
- 7:22Speaker 3: when Dre Greenlaw goes down, when Christian McCaffrey's not healthy,
- 7:28Speaker 3: when Trent Williams is out of the lineup, when George
- 7:31Speaker 3: Kittle ain't there, we've had an up-close-and-personal example of what
- 7:38Speaker 3: it does, how it looks, what it means to a
- 7:41Speaker 3: football team. So I want you, 877-353-0700, at RealOCsports.com. How
- 7:51Speaker 3: many wins are your stars worth? First of all, let's
- 7:55Speaker 3: determine who is a star player on this Utah football roster.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Devin Dampier is a star. He was capable of star
- 8:05Speaker 3: potential and star production last year. He was not yet
- 8:08Speaker 3: an established star as your starting quarterback last year. This
- 8:11Speaker 3: year he is. Okay. Last year, your star players were
- 8:16Speaker 3: fringe borderline Devin Dampier and Uh, they were Spencer Fano
- 8:21Speaker 3: and Caleb Lomu. And of course, how much you depend
- 8:24Speaker 3: on those guys to deliver you more wins is its
- 8:28Speaker 3: own conversation. Your star players for the university of Utah
- 8:35Speaker 3: this year, how many wins are they worth? Okay. So
- 8:37Speaker 3: it's Devin damp here who goes on that list. It's
- 8:39Speaker 3: way Sean Parker who goes on that list. I don't
- 8:43Speaker 3: think we could put any of the offensive lineman on
- 8:45Speaker 3: that list yet. Although zero way Williams and Al Harrison
- 8:47Speaker 3: and these guys have done really incredible things. The nature
- 8:52Speaker 3: of that unit is that the unit is more important
- 8:55Speaker 3: than the parts of the unit, right? And offensive line
- 8:59Speaker 3: is supposed to be greater than the sum of the parts.
- 9:02Speaker 3: You have to be, in my opinion, a high NFL
- 9:06Speaker 3: draft pick to really be an outlier. I'm talking about
- 9:09Speaker 3: the Spencer photos. I'm talking about the Caleb Lomas. I'm
- 9:13Speaker 3: talking about the Garrett bowls. I'm talking about Jordan Seton
- 9:16Speaker 3: who left Colorado and is at LSU, right? By the way,
- 9:21Speaker 3: BYU without Andrew Gentry, one of their starting tackles, the
- 9:25Speaker 3: most experienced offensive lineman they have on their roster. I
- 9:29Speaker 3: think that he probably would have been part of that
- 9:32Speaker 3: star lineup. If you're making one for BYU. So Devin
- 9:38Speaker 3: damp here, way Sean Parker, uh, Do we put Brayden
- 9:41Speaker 3: Pagan in that yet? I think, I think most of
- 9:45Speaker 3: us probably are willing to not that they're not irreplaceable,
- 9:56Speaker 3: but we're talking a significant drop off. when those guys
- 10:01Speaker 3: aren't in the lineup. And that's with respect to Steve
- 10:03Speaker 3: Chavez Soto and Daniel Bray and Bam Bell and everyone else.
- 10:08Speaker 3: But way Sean Parker has proven to us in four
- 10:10Speaker 3: games so far that he is special and he's on his,
- 10:13Speaker 3: he's on a special pace right now. Do we put
- 10:19Speaker 3: Bird Ficklin in the same conversation? Is he also there?
- 10:23Speaker 3: What about on the defensive side of the ball? Star players.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I mean, your most productive tackler so far has been
- 10:31Speaker 3: Trey Reynolds. I don't think we're ready to call him
- 10:33Speaker 3: a star yet. Jackson Benny is maybe the only guy
- 10:39Speaker 3: that you're willing to put that tag on for the
- 10:44Speaker 3: purposes of a four-game sample size. I think. So heaven forbid,
- 10:51Speaker 3: if you're without one of those guys or multiple of
- 10:53Speaker 3: those guys for a week or two week, or in
- 10:57Speaker 3: the case of BYU's returning offensive player of the year,
- 11:01Speaker 3: LJ Martin, four to six weeks. And those four to
- 11:04Speaker 3: six weeks are now all meaningful. These are conference games.
- 11:08Speaker 3: These are games that overlap with the most important juncture
- 11:13Speaker 3: of your season. LJ Martin is going to be out.
- 11:18Speaker 3: tomorrow night against an Iowa state team that while it's,
- 11:23Speaker 3: I think that's an offense versus offense type game. If
- 11:27Speaker 3: LJ Martin is not there to counter attack, whatever Aiden
- 11:30Speaker 3: Flora does for Iowa state is not able to cancel
- 11:35Speaker 3: out that production. Do we believe that journey Tonga is
- 11:39Speaker 3: capable of doing that? Or Devon Eka is capable of
- 11:42Speaker 3: doing that. Maybe, probably not. especially when you're missing a
- 11:47Speaker 3: starting offensive lineman as well, especially when the guy who's
- 11:52Speaker 3: actually tasked, one of the guys who's actually tasked with
- 11:55Speaker 3: stopping Aiden Flora, one of the best, most productive defensive
- 11:58Speaker 3: players you've got, most experienced defensive players you've got, defensive leader,
- 12:02Speaker 3: when he's not available to you, it really starts to
- 12:06Speaker 3: shake what your expectations should be, and knock on wood,
- 12:11Speaker 3: thank goodness for the University of Utah, We're only looking
- 12:15Speaker 3: at an injury report today that says certain guys are questionable.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Carson Kalfusi is questionable. We hope that we see him play.
- 12:24Speaker 3: How many wins are your star players worth?
- 12:26Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Jake says, I would say two to three games because
- 12:33Speaker 3: the Utes have really good depth in comparison to other teams,
- 12:36Speaker 3: plus the fact that our schedule is favorable and the
- 12:38Speaker 3: schedule absolutely has to be brought in here. My dad
- 12:42Speaker 3: and I got into an argument about this this week,
- 12:44Speaker 3: says Jake. Don't argue with your parents over it. However,
- 12:49Speaker 3: it's worth having that conversation, right? If Devin Dampier goes
- 12:55Speaker 3: down for a week or two, most of us are confident,
- 12:58Speaker 3: especially because of the schedule that Utah has. As long
- 13:02Speaker 3: as those weeks are not Houston and BYU weeks or
- 13:05Speaker 3: it's like BYU and Arizona back to back, I think
- 13:08Speaker 3: we're probably going to be like, okay, everything's going to
- 13:10Speaker 3: be fine here. We could trust bird Fickley. We could
- 13:14Speaker 3: trust the rest of the offense. We know what it
- 13:18Speaker 3: looks like when the injury bug starts to pile up.
- 13:21Speaker 3: How many wins is way Sean Parker worth? I think
- 13:23Speaker 3: way Sean Parker, the way he's playing right now has
- 13:27Speaker 3: elevated my expectation for Utah football. And it's not just
- 13:30Speaker 3: way Sean, it's the collective unit here, but having that weapon,
- 13:34Speaker 3: having a guy who's that capable, having that much of
- 13:37Speaker 3: a game breaker for me has added at least another
- 13:41Speaker 3: win to my expected total for Utah football, whether that
- 13:45Speaker 3: comes in the form of a conference championship or a
- 13:48Speaker 3: playoff game, or just a good old fashioned Vegas bowl.
- 13:52Speaker 3: I think that I can add another win to To
- 13:56Speaker 3: this Utah football, as long as way Sean Parker is
- 13:59Speaker 3: healthy for the whole season. That's how impactful some star
- 14:03Speaker 3: players are.
- 14:04Speaker 6: Yes.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Depth matters. It's not only about your star players, but man,
- 14:08Speaker 3: sometimes it's really about your star players. Remember how good
- 14:13Speaker 3: Colorado looked when they had Travis Hunter and Shador Sanders
- 14:21Speaker 3: and Jordan Seton all on the same team. It looked
- 14:24Speaker 3: like they could actually play football. Not against the Utes, necessarily,
- 14:29Speaker 3: but they could beat teams. They could outpace teams. They
- 14:33Speaker 3: could run away from teams. And when guys like that
- 14:38Speaker 3: are no longer part of the program, and there aren't
- 14:40Speaker 3: any at Colorado right now. There's none. It's not that
- 14:46Speaker 3: every player on that team stinks. It's that there's nobody
- 14:49Speaker 3: to elevate. There's no... There's nobody who's an outlier. You
- 14:54Speaker 3: got to have at least a couple. I don't know
- 14:57Speaker 3: if Kansas has outliers. I'm not trying to be overly cocky.
- 15:03Speaker 3: We had Brian Haney on the show yesterday. If you
- 15:05Speaker 3: didn't listen to it, ESPN 700 sports.com on the ESPN
- 15:09Speaker 3: 700 app, you got to have somebody that leads from
- 15:15Speaker 3: the front. So to speak, it's nice to have these teams,
- 15:19Speaker 3: like we've seen in college football, we've seen an NBA
- 15:22Speaker 3: basketball where everybody just pulls their weight and does their job.
- 15:26Speaker 3: And you can rely on everybody to be like a
- 15:28Speaker 3: B plus a minus type individual. The reality for most
- 15:32Speaker 3: teams in college football is you got probably like eight
- 15:37Speaker 3: bees on your offense and a minus an a, and
- 15:43Speaker 3: maybe a C plus. You got someone who's a little
- 15:49Speaker 3: bit of a weakness. You got most guys that are
- 15:51Speaker 3: just like very above average, good enough to be starters.
- 15:56Speaker 3: They're going to get beat. They're going to win sometimes.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Then you got maybe one or two. And if you're
- 16:01Speaker 3: not Ohio state and Oregon and Alabama and Indiana, you
- 16:05Speaker 3: got one or two guys that are like, Holy cow.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Look what that dude's capable of. I think Utah's got
- 16:12Speaker 3: like three of those guys on their offense right now.
- 16:16Speaker 3: The AA, like the real AA plus guys. They might
- 16:19Speaker 3: have four and two of them might be quarterbacks. How
- 16:26Speaker 3: many wins are those guys worth? Jay on the text
- 16:30Speaker 3: line says, I love and hate that LJ Martin is
- 16:32Speaker 3: out for four to six weeks. I want BYU as
- 16:34Speaker 3: healthy and good as possible on November 7th. Now they
- 16:38Speaker 3: may be a three loss team. They'll probably lose to
- 16:40Speaker 3: Notre Dame, Utah, and an upset that will drop them
- 16:43Speaker 3: out of the championship and the playoff go Utes. And Jay,
- 16:47Speaker 3: I am with you a hundred percent. I know this
- 16:51Speaker 3: is going to upset the 10% who want death to
- 16:54Speaker 3: BYU hate on BYU, no matter the circumstance, always root
- 16:58Speaker 3: against BYU. That's fine. I respect your vitriol in a rivalry.
- 17:04Speaker 3: What is in Utah's best interest is, is for them
- 17:07Speaker 3: to beat a really good BYU team on November 7th.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Not a diminished BYU team. The best look for the
- 17:15Speaker 3: University of Utah, when we're talking about a college football playoff,
- 17:21Speaker 3: is to beat a number six-ranked BYU team, a number
- 17:24Speaker 3: five-ranked BYU team at home. Now, BYU's not going to
- 17:29Speaker 3: get there. I don't think. I think BYU's going to
- 17:32Speaker 3: lose tomorrow night. I think Iowa state suddenly has become
- 17:36Speaker 3: a massive problem for the Cougs. And that is not
- 17:42Speaker 3: something I was going to say after Utah beat the
- 17:46Speaker 3: brakes off of Iowa state. And really they did, even
- 17:49Speaker 3: though the score indicated that it was a lot closer
- 17:52Speaker 3: minus third quarter fall asleep, Utah smashed. Iowa state held
- 17:58Speaker 3: their best players. Well below season averages physically won the
- 18:03Speaker 3: battle penalty wise, won the battle. couple of self-inflicted wounds
- 18:07Speaker 3: here and there. And that game gets closer than it
- 18:10Speaker 3: should be. But Utah dominated Iowa state and then Iowa
- 18:16Speaker 3: state recovered. Well looked really good against West Virginia. Aiden
- 18:20Speaker 3: Flora reminded me that, Holy cow, I was underestimating Utah's
- 18:24Speaker 3: ability to stop guys like this. I'm looking at it
- 18:27Speaker 3: now and I'm going, geez, Utah where you all have
- 18:33Speaker 3: that November 7th matchup circled and you got plenty of
- 18:37Speaker 3: work to do. You got Houston before then you got
- 18:39Speaker 3: a Kansas team. You can't fall asleep on, but now
- 18:43Speaker 3: suddenly the big 12 conference is going to have a
- 18:47Speaker 3: Notre Dame team come into Provo and they were already
- 18:52Speaker 3: more than the touchdown favorite. I haven't seen if the
- 18:54Speaker 3: line moved today, but if BYU looks how I think
- 18:58Speaker 3: they're going to look without LJ Martin, without Sione Mora,
- 19:02Speaker 3: And who knows how long they're going to be without
- 19:04Speaker 3: Isaiah Glasker. Those are three of the best 10 guys
- 19:09Speaker 3: on the team. Two of the best five guys on
- 19:13Speaker 3: the team included in that list. Suddenly bear Bachmeier has
- 19:17Speaker 3: got to do it all himself. I mean, it's a,
- 19:22Speaker 3: it's a nightmare if you're a BYU fan. If you
- 19:24Speaker 3: apply that same thing to the youths, we've seen what
- 19:27Speaker 3: it looks like in recent years. If you look at
- 19:29Speaker 3: it from this year's perspective, and thankfully it's only a
- 19:32Speaker 3: hypothetical right now, as I knock on wood, but how
- 19:36Speaker 3: many times, how many wins come because Devin does something
- 19:41Speaker 3: special way. Sean does something special. Braden pagan goes off Jackson.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Benny gets two picks. or is a part of three
- 19:52Speaker 3: big defensive stops that changed the face of a game. 6, 8, 4,
- 20:00Speaker 3: 4 says BYU use record would be identical to this
- 20:04Speaker 3: point without all those guys into this point of the season.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I don't think they're at any threat to lose until
- 20:11Speaker 3: Notre Dame and Utah.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Could be right. I think that the Iowa State game
- 20:20Speaker 3: gets a lot more interesting.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I do.
- 20:29Speaker 3: BYU is now in big trouble when Notre Dame comes
- 20:33Speaker 3: to town without their best player overall. That's LJ Martin. Uh,
- 20:41Speaker 3: 63 51 says, I think this year's Utah basketball team
- 20:44Speaker 3: is similar that there are no outliers on that Utah
- 20:47Speaker 3: basketball team. We're going to find out. I think we'll,
- 20:51Speaker 3: I think we'll pump the brakes on our expectations and
- 20:56Speaker 3: figure out what they are as we watch it unfold.
- 20:58Speaker 3: We'll talk a little bit more with Gordy Chiesa when
- 21:00Speaker 3: he joins us in about five minutes about that. Uh,
- 21:04Speaker 3: 63 51 says most sports have an actual statistic for this. war,
- 21:08Speaker 3: which is literally wins above replacement. You're right there. We
- 21:12Speaker 3: don't keep war stats in college football. I mean, maybe
- 21:20Speaker 3: some of the deep, deep analytics people do, but I'm,
- 21:24Speaker 3: I'm looking at way Sean Parker and I'm looking at
- 21:26Speaker 3: Devin Dampier and I'm looking at bird Ficklin and I'm
- 21:28Speaker 3: looking at Jackson Betty and maybe Jai Moa or somebody
- 21:31Speaker 3: else ends up putting themselves in that same category. But
- 21:35Speaker 3: right now I'm looking at the big 12 conference starting
- 21:40Speaker 3: to have, and really the entire nation starting to have
- 21:42Speaker 3: some of these unfortunate injuries and starting to have some
- 21:48Speaker 3: of the expectations shifted and changed based on these things.
- 21:53Speaker 3: And it is a tough swallow when we're talking about
- 21:57Speaker 3: top 25 teams. If I'm on BYU radio today, I
- 22:03Speaker 3: am doing my best to hold it together. I am
- 22:07Speaker 3: scared you-know-what-less over an Iowa State team that now is
- 22:12Speaker 3: reading this same thing and going like, wait a second,
- 22:15Speaker 3: they don't have their best defensive, well, maybe third best
- 22:19Speaker 3: defensive player. They don't have a top three defensive guy.
- 22:23Speaker 3: They don't have the top one offensive guy. And his
- 22:25Speaker 3: best backup is also out. And their best offensive lineman
- 22:29Speaker 3: is also out. Massively problematic. And if I'm Notre Dame,
- 22:36Speaker 3: even though I take it one game at a time,
- 22:37Speaker 3: if I'm some like scout film analyst for Notre Dame,
- 22:43Speaker 3: I'm dancing a jig today saying that just made my
- 22:47Speaker 3: life a lot easier in Provo. If this guy's going
- 22:49Speaker 3: to be out, if I'm Kalani Satake, I am desperately
- 22:54Speaker 3: hoping that the next man up mentality that every college
- 22:58Speaker 3: football team aspires to actually applies to these young bucks
- 23:03Speaker 3: in my running back room. And it's not that they're
- 23:06Speaker 3: not talented. We've seen really nice flashes from both journey
- 23:09Speaker 3: Tonga and Devon Eka. They both have a ton of talent.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It's not an insult to them. It's not a commentary
- 23:17Speaker 3: on Aaron Roderick's ability to overcome something like this. It's
- 23:20Speaker 3: just very, very, very difficult to take the best player
- 23:26Speaker 3: off of a unit and say, I expect the same
- 23:29Speaker 3: production from that unit. The only real silver lining here,
- 23:33Speaker 3: if you're BYU, is that it's not Bear Bachmeier. But
- 23:38Speaker 3: here's what happens. Without LJ Martin, we saw this against TCU, right?
- 23:45Speaker 3: Without LJ Martin, that offense struggled. And Bear Bachmeier had
- 23:51Speaker 3: to shoulder the load himself in an ugly game, in
- 23:55Speaker 3: a wet weather game. had to basically use his legs,
- 23:59Speaker 3: use his body, use his physicality to keep drives alive
- 24:03Speaker 3: and win the game for the Cougs. He's very capable
- 24:06Speaker 3: of doing that. He's the BYU, the poor man's version
- 24:11Speaker 3: of Tim Tebow. He's got that thing about him. He's
- 24:15Speaker 3: 240 something pounds. He's a beast, but he's also been
- 24:21Speaker 3: mostly protected this season and by the lack of need
- 24:26Speaker 3: for his individual production. And you knock on wood, and
- 24:30Speaker 3: I really do hope for health for that whole team
- 24:35Speaker 3: moving forward. I want them to be healthy. I want
- 24:37Speaker 3: them to be at their best. I want Utah to
- 24:39Speaker 3: beat that because it looks better for the Utes in
- 24:42Speaker 3: every aspect. It looks better for the Big 12 Conference
- 24:47Speaker 3: if BYU's at full strength when Notre Dame comes to
- 24:51Speaker 3: town next weekend. Now they're not going to be, that's
- 24:57Speaker 3: a tough swallow. If you're a Cougar fan, if you're
- 25:01Speaker 3: someone who's peripherally just rooting for the big 12, and
- 25:04Speaker 3: it's a question you got to ask yourself about your
- 25:07Speaker 3: own roster as other teams around college football are starting
- 25:10Speaker 3: to experience this. How many wins are my best guys worth?
- 25:15Speaker 3: Devin Dampier is worth a lot. But because Bird Ficklin
- 25:20Speaker 3: is so good, we maybe have some confidence. And we
- 25:23Speaker 3: saw last year that without Devin, Bird could lead you
- 25:26Speaker 3: to a win. Without Way Sean Parker, do you lose
- 25:32Speaker 3: an extra game or two? Without Zaraway Williams, would you
- 25:38Speaker 3: lop off one win, one expected win? If Jackson Benny's
- 25:44Speaker 3: not on your defense... Is he the only guy on
- 25:47Speaker 3: your defense or is the depth enough that you say,
- 25:49Speaker 3: I mean, I I'm looking at it from the conversation
- 25:52Speaker 3: we had yesterday and I'm going, well, I told you
- 25:54Speaker 3: there's four starting caliber safeties on this team and that's,
- 25:57Speaker 3: that's true. So can you afford to lose one? Even
- 26:00Speaker 3: if he's your biggest star, probably maybe, especially with Utah's schedule,
- 26:04Speaker 3: the way that it looks, but it doesn't get easy
- 26:09Speaker 3: or easier as the season progresses. BYU is, In the
- 26:15Speaker 3: next four weeks, if LJ Martin is out for four weeks,
- 26:21Speaker 3: they've got Iowa State, Notre Dame, on the road at UCF,
- 26:25Speaker 3: Arizona State. All of those with Notre Dame being the outlier,
- 26:32Speaker 3: you feel like three of those four are pretty winnable games. Now,
- 26:34Speaker 3: if LJ Martin comes back after four weeks, that means
- 26:39Speaker 3: he's ready when he comes to town to take on
- 26:42Speaker 3: the University of Utah. That means he's healthy, he's rested.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Is he rusty? If he's out for six weeks, as
- 26:52Speaker 3: the projection is four to six weeks, and if you're
- 26:55Speaker 3: a BYU fan, you're sending your bootleg peptides to the
- 27:00Speaker 3: football facility right now. If he's out for six weeks,
- 27:03Speaker 3: it's Iowa State, Notre Dame, UCF, Arizona State, Utah, Baylor.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Baylor looks pretty darn good. We know Utah looks pretty
- 27:13Speaker 3: darn good. Notre Dame is a really good team. Iowa
- 27:18Speaker 3: state has shown some ability to be dangerous as has UCF.
- 27:22Speaker 3: But if you're going chalk on those six weeks, I
- 27:28Speaker 3: think now without LJ Martin and who knows how long
- 27:31Speaker 3: Sione Moa continues to be, I think he actually might
- 27:34Speaker 3: be coming back this week. Isaiah Glasker being out, hopefully
- 27:39Speaker 3: a limited amount of time for BYU, but without LJ Martin,
- 27:45Speaker 3: you're already an underdog against Notre Dame in Utah. Are
- 27:48Speaker 3: you now an underdog against Baylor? If you don't have
- 27:50Speaker 3: LJ Martin for that game, something to think about.
- 27:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:58Speaker 3: We got to talk some basketball, Alex Jensen and his
- 28:01Speaker 3: crew back in business. just from an exhibition standpoint. Utah
- 28:10Speaker 3: Jazz continuing their preseason. Darren Peterson showing us some flashes,
- 28:14Speaker 3: as we expected he would. We'll discuss all that and
- 28:17Speaker 3: more with our resident NBA guru, Gordy Chiesa, who joins
- 28:21Speaker 3: us next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show, just getting started
- 28:24Speaker 3: on a Thursday. ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 28:31Speaker 5: Peace out.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show. Welcome in our
- 28:59Speaker 3: good friend, NBA insider and longtime coach. Gordy Chiesa brought
- 29:04Speaker 3: to you by Aladdin Industries, your Utah V-Lux dealer. Hey, Gordy.
- 29:07Speaker 6: Welcome.
- 29:08Speaker 3: How are you?
- 29:09Speaker 7: Sean, I'm doing well. Thank you.
- 29:12Speaker 3: We've talked a lot about the expectations shifting for this
- 29:17Speaker 3: Utah Jazz team. And I know that the preseason is
- 29:20Speaker 3: just that. It's the preseason. They lose one 17 to
- 29:23Speaker 3: one Oh six to the nuggets, but Darren Peterson, the
- 29:28Speaker 3: number two, overall pick 23 points in 30 minutes. Some
- 29:33Speaker 3: nice things from ACE Bailey as well, although he wasn't
- 29:35Speaker 3: terribly efficient with his shooting. What were your thoughts on
- 29:39Speaker 3: the performance for those young players?
- 29:42Speaker 7: Well, Darren Peterson, it's how he got his points. He
- 29:44Speaker 7: shot 10 for 18 from the field, but I call it,
- 29:48Speaker 7: he was a rocket driver. He got in that lane
- 29:50Speaker 7: and made, made plays as far as either shooting the
- 29:53Speaker 7: ball or kick out for the open three point shot.
- 29:57Speaker 7: And he played with a lot of confidence and, And Sean,
- 30:00Speaker 7: he's a guard. He's not a point guard. He's a guard,
- 30:04Speaker 7: meaning he can play two guard and also sometimes point.
- 30:09Speaker 7: But his best part of his game is that his
- 30:11Speaker 7: talent level and he's fearless. He gets that ball, you
- 30:15Speaker 7: have the feeling that he's going to make something happen.
- 30:17Speaker 7: And that's really what the Jazz need. Now, with Ace Bailey,
- 30:21Speaker 7: second year now, they're much more physical trying to guard him.
- 30:24Speaker 7: That's the first thing. And the second thing is that
- 30:28Speaker 7: His roles are just some where, whether he starts or
- 30:31Speaker 7: off the bench, he has to find that sweet spot
- 30:34Speaker 7: for him as far as being aggressive with the ball,
- 30:37Speaker 7: as far as shooting it, but also defensively being able
- 30:40Speaker 7: to guard his position. And so, Sean, last we talked
- 30:44Speaker 7: about the Jazz defensive concerns last year. Let's fast forward
- 30:48Speaker 7: more importantly. I know it's only two games, but the
- 30:51Speaker 7: indicator right now is that the Jazz are much more
- 30:53Speaker 7: aggressive defensively. So that's good. That's positive. But the problem
- 30:58Speaker 7: is that so far they lack consistent technique. So, for example,
- 31:04Speaker 7: in the loss the other day against the Nuggets, is
- 31:07Speaker 7: that the Jazz allowed the Nuggets 42-3 throws. The Jazz
- 31:12Speaker 7: shot 12. They were outscored from the foul line 30-12, meaning, what,
- 31:16Speaker 7: 18 points. And so the learning point about that is
- 31:19Speaker 7: that you've got to– the question is always, any sport,
- 31:22Speaker 7: how can I have– sound technique with physicality. And it
- 31:26Speaker 7: all starts with what, instead of using your extended hands
- 31:30Speaker 7: and holding somebody or shoving somebody, you've got to master
- 31:33Speaker 7: how to use your chest, your shoulders and your footwork
- 31:36Speaker 7: to get leverage. And that's what the jazz are trying
- 31:40Speaker 7: to attempt to do. So far, it's been a struggle.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Gordon, I've been meaning to ask you about this. When you,
- 31:45Speaker 3: when you have young players who are clearly, at least
- 31:49Speaker 3: for me, the most talented players on the team, right? And,
- 31:52Speaker 3: and in some ways already the best players on the team,
- 31:55Speaker 3: although talented and best are not always the exact same thing.
- 32:00Speaker 3: How difficult is that for the veterans to manage? When
- 32:03Speaker 3: you've got a young guy who needs to learn the
- 32:06Speaker 3: way of things and is someone that needs to be
- 32:09Speaker 3: taught and needs to be talked to, if he's a
- 32:12Speaker 3: better basketball player than you, he's a more talented guy
- 32:14Speaker 3: than you, maybe he doesn't want to listen to you.
- 32:17Speaker 3: How do they manage that in an NBA locker room?
- 32:23Speaker 7: It's based on a personality of the people doing the talking. So,
- 32:27Speaker 7: for example, Larry Markkinen is a skilled player, but it
- 32:30Speaker 7: seems to me he's quiet by nature. And so he'll
- 32:34Speaker 7: do his talking by his performance on the court. So
- 32:37Speaker 7: it's the little things that you say to somebody and
- 32:40Speaker 7: your voice is choice, how you say to your peers, okay,
- 32:44Speaker 7: that we don't like what you're doing right now. Say,
- 32:46Speaker 7: for example, just for the narrative right now, where you're
- 32:49Speaker 7: coming late for practice or you're way too loud in
- 32:52Speaker 7: the locker room, you're way too boisterous about yourself, how
- 32:56Speaker 7: well you played. And so... The counterpunch to that is
- 33:01Speaker 7: your voice. And you've got to make that young player
- 33:04Speaker 7: know that even though we respect your talent, you have
- 33:08Speaker 7: to understand that this is about our team. And that's
- 33:11Speaker 7: that invisible, Sean, that every locker room, and you know,
- 33:15Speaker 7: you played sports, that it's all based on what? The
- 33:18Speaker 7: chemistry of a group. And that's what makes certain teams elite,
- 33:22Speaker 7: other teams only average, or many teams disjointed because of
- 33:29Speaker 7: the invisible match between the veterans and the young fellas
- 33:33Speaker 7: that have star potential.
- 33:35Speaker 3: When is an appropriate time for Darren Peterson, Ace Bailey,
- 33:39Speaker 3: Keontae George to kind of take over the locker room?
- 33:43Speaker 3: And not in a bad way, but just to be like,
- 33:45Speaker 3: all right, now we can be the ones that, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 3: everyone is looking to. I mean, is it in year one?
- 33:52Speaker 3: If you're Darren Peterson, is it in year two? If
- 33:54Speaker 3: you're ace Bailey?
- 33:56Speaker 7: I absolutely not. No, it's county Georgia right now in
- 34:00Speaker 7: year four. Those guys haven't done anything at all yet.
- 34:02Speaker 7: As far as the words, the jets have never made
- 34:05Speaker 7: the playoffs. So that the learning point about this is
- 34:09Speaker 7: that you can start being more vocal in a positive way.
- 34:13Speaker 7: And that's the catch word is, after you show performance
- 34:16Speaker 7: as far as winning, not just you playing well yourself.
- 34:20Speaker 7: This is a team sport, and it's so interwoven. It's
- 34:23Speaker 7: the most amazing thing, the NFL and the NBA, that
- 34:27Speaker 7: it's truly a team sport. And so you've got to
- 34:30Speaker 7: showcase your talents, but you have to understand about your
- 34:34Speaker 7: teammates and floor mates as people. And that's where it
- 34:39Speaker 7: gets so interesting. Also, the maturity index. When does a
- 34:43Speaker 7: person maturity kick in? Is it age 22? Is it 32?
- 34:47Speaker 7: Is it 42? Or is it never? And that's the
- 34:51Speaker 7: great unknown. And that's the beauty of sports. You think
- 34:54Speaker 7: you know about chemistry, but you don't. So it should
- 34:58Speaker 7: be Keontae George. He's got an element of street cred
- 35:02Speaker 7: in the locker room. He has played well. Now he
- 35:04Speaker 7: has to showcase that by now playing on both sides
- 35:07Speaker 7: of the ball. Offensively, he's been really well, terrific. Defensively,
- 35:11Speaker 7: he's been lacking. So now for Keontae to be a
- 35:15Speaker 7: team leader, he has to show by example.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Where did she is our guest here on the Sean
- 35:20Speaker 3: O'Connell show talking Utah jazz basketball. Yusuf Nurkic is one
- 35:26Speaker 3: of these guys that is supposed to help out on
- 35:29Speaker 3: the defensive front. He's a good tone setter for physicality
- 35:33Speaker 3: and things like that. And today's NBA, I have never
- 35:37Speaker 3: heard of this injury with the partial planter plate tear
- 35:41Speaker 3: of the second toe in his right foot, but it
- 35:44Speaker 3: is severe enough that he's going to miss the at
- 35:47Speaker 3: least four weeks of this upcoming season. How did the
- 35:49Speaker 3: Jazz handle that?
- 35:51Speaker 7: It's a concern. So the first thing, let's describe right now, Sean,
- 35:56Speaker 7: Yusuf Nurkic. We call him the Brazian Beast. That's his nickname.
- 35:59Speaker 2: All right?
- 36:00Speaker 7: He's 6'11, 290 pounds. So, again, for the listeners, think
- 36:06Speaker 7: about being 6'11, 290, and all the wear and tear
- 36:10Speaker 7: on your, Sean mentioned a second ago, on your second toe.
- 36:14Speaker 7: on your right foot. And so the plate, as far
- 36:17Speaker 7: as the texture, as far as being compromised and the
- 36:21Speaker 7: holding them out. In other words, in layman's term, he
- 36:24Speaker 7: basically has a soft foot from jumping and running and
- 36:29Speaker 7: twisting and turning. Also, by the way, he's age 32.
- 36:33Speaker 7: And so think about Yusuf Nurkic's frame. I call it
- 36:36Speaker 7: lumberjack frame. So there's so much stress on the lower
- 36:39Speaker 7: part of your body because you're so strong upper body.
- 36:42Speaker 7: He's going to miss probably They say four weeks, Sean,
- 36:45Speaker 7: but usually it takes slightly longer for big guys because of, again,
- 36:51Speaker 7: their body frame. So I'm saying basically that he'll miss
- 36:55Speaker 7: probably between 14 to 16 games to start the season.
- 36:59Speaker 7: 14 to 16. So the question is, who does the
- 37:03Speaker 7: Jazz start? The option could be Jackson Hayes as a
- 37:08Speaker 7: rim protector and a high-jumping shot blocker. And then during
- 37:13Speaker 7: the game, they can move over to Jaron Jackson for
- 37:16Speaker 7: some of the minutes. If they're playing in a position, Sean,
- 37:19Speaker 7: that's relatively small and more finesse center, they could play
- 37:23Speaker 7: Larry Malkin as a stretch five, which is advantageous. And
- 37:27Speaker 7: then the backup of all of it would be playing
- 37:31Speaker 7: Mo Bamba six to eight minutes. Or the backup to
- 37:34Speaker 7: the backup to the backup would be Kyle Filipowski, who's
- 37:38Speaker 7: hurt right now with a back concern, he could play
- 37:42Speaker 7: as a lightweight five-man, again, certain positions. Last point about that,
- 37:47Speaker 7: as far as economics, the Jets are under contract right now,
- 37:50Speaker 7: 14 players. So if they choose, if someone is waived,
- 37:55Speaker 7: the next Sean– 10 to 14 days, if they like
- 38:00Speaker 7: that guy as a backup, they could sign him. It
- 38:04Speaker 7: doesn't affect their salary cap. So there are some options
- 38:07Speaker 7: that Jazz have right now is that with Yusuf Nurkic,
- 38:12Speaker 7: the doctors don't want to bring him back too soon.
- 38:16Speaker 7: So they're going to be sure that his foot is
- 38:20Speaker 7: going to be healed. And it's like any sport. You
- 38:23Speaker 7: don't want to play a sport in season with bum wheels.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Especially big men in the NBA, right? I mean, that's like,
- 38:31Speaker 3: it's the one thing that you hate reading about hearing
- 38:34Speaker 3: about when you're talking about these, you know, six, 10,
- 38:37Speaker 3: seven foot seven, one guys, even when they're lean, they're
- 38:40Speaker 3: 270 something pounds. You got all these little micro fractures
- 38:45Speaker 3: and pressure injuries and things like that. You never like
- 38:48Speaker 3: hearing about feet, ankles for big guys.
- 38:53Speaker 7: So, again, because of the wear and tear on your body,
- 38:56Speaker 7: you can be strong as far as muscle density and shoulders.
- 39:02Speaker 7: You have a wide frame. That's commendable. And that's for collision.
- 39:07Speaker 7: As far as body on body, frame on frame, you
- 39:11Speaker 7: can match up. But the flip side is now the
- 39:15Speaker 7: lower part of your body, meaning your legs and your
- 39:18Speaker 7: ankles and your feet. That's where the stress really is.
- 39:21Speaker 7: They get so much wear and tear on a player's body.
- 39:25Speaker 7: LeBron James, as far as sitting out in preseason, I
- 39:28Speaker 7: know why. Because he has an element of arthritis, which
- 39:32Speaker 7: is perfectly normal for a lot of people, especially age 42,
- 39:37Speaker 7: with all the wear and tear on his body. So
- 39:39Speaker 7: they're holding him out. He could play if it's a
- 39:41Speaker 7: regular game. But the Sixers are right now arresting him,
- 39:46Speaker 7: and he's doing light work. And that's all part of
- 39:48Speaker 7: the NBA. The NBA, like the NFL, the whole season
- 39:51Speaker 7: is a war of attrition. Who can absorb injuries as
- 39:56Speaker 7: far as a team until you get to the magical
- 39:59Speaker 7: land called the playoffs? And then it's based on, it's
- 40:03Speaker 7: a much lesser rotation as far as players. And we
- 40:06Speaker 7: got to the playoffs. Now let's see what we can do.
- 40:09Speaker 7: But in the meantime, suddenly you're the, Sean, you're the
- 40:13Speaker 7: 14th man on the roster, and that's wonderful. Now within
- 40:17Speaker 7: two weeks, you're the 11th man. Within two months, you're
- 40:20Speaker 7: the eighth man on the roster. And the question always is,
- 40:23Speaker 7: are you ready mentally, physically, and spiritually to perform? That's
- 40:28Speaker 7: the question as always.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Couple more minutes here with Gordy Chiesa talking all things basketball. Gordy,
- 40:33Speaker 3: you and I have spent a lot of time talking
- 40:35Speaker 3: about the global expansion of the NBA product, and they
- 40:40Speaker 3: have decided to double and triple and quadruple down on this.
- 40:44Speaker 3: There's plans for NBA Europe to move forward. And I
- 40:48Speaker 3: thought that there would be some type of merger, that
- 40:50Speaker 3: there would be some type of integration of existing EuroLeague teams.
- 40:54Speaker 3: But the EuroLeague team owners voted on that and rejected
- 40:58Speaker 3: the a merger offer this week, somewhat to my surprise,
- 41:03Speaker 3: maybe it's just my ignorance speaking, what was your reaction
- 41:06Speaker 3: to seeing that EuroLeague owners don't want any part of
- 41:09Speaker 3: NBA Europe?
- 41:11Speaker 7: Sure, because they're the owners and they have the markets
- 41:14Speaker 7: and they have those wonderful cities. So for the listeners,
- 41:19Speaker 7: the first thing, the NBA is trying to create a
- 41:21Speaker 7: league where it's NBA Europe with... in conjunction with FIBA,
- 41:26Speaker 7: which is the international governing body of basketball, and also
- 41:29Speaker 7: it's soccer. However, the EuroLeague is part of FIBA, but
- 41:35Speaker 7: like always, these owners are profit-driven, and they have a
- 41:40Speaker 7: good thing going where their fan base is very loyal,
- 41:44Speaker 7: both basketball and we know soccer is amazing as far
- 41:49Speaker 7: as their fans are. All right, so the NBA wants
- 41:52Speaker 7: to partner with the European League, but the European owners
- 41:57Speaker 7: said no. We're not going to give so far the
- 42:00Speaker 7: way the rules are. Are we partners or are you
- 42:02Speaker 7: going to take over eventually? Because we know that Amazon
- 42:05Speaker 7: Prime Video and ABC, ESPN, Disney, and NBCUniversal, they want
- 42:11Speaker 7: part of that European market as far as basketball. And
- 42:16Speaker 7: here's the cities that... The European owners don't want to
- 42:19Speaker 7: give up to the NBA. Madrid, Athens, London, Paris, Istanbul, Rome, Lisbon, Portugal,
- 42:28Speaker 7: and Berlin. These are all viable cities. So, Sean, in
- 42:32Speaker 7: the NFL, they play games in London like it's a
- 42:35Speaker 7: home game for those teams. And so they played games
- 42:38Speaker 7: already in Frankfurt in the NFL. And this is the
- 42:41Speaker 7: NBA now trying to take over the– The European League.
- 42:46Speaker 7: Let's point about that. Oh, by the way, just say
- 42:49Speaker 7: there was a merger and eventually the NBA had an
- 42:52Speaker 7: expansion after having a trial with these teams. The union
- 42:58Speaker 7: of the NBA Players Association has to approve this eventually
- 43:01Speaker 7: where we're going to send our people over to Europe.
- 43:07Speaker 7: We want to be compensated for it. So there's way
- 43:09Speaker 7: beyond just playing it right now. The target date possibility,
- 43:14Speaker 7: if they rework the terms of agreement, would be probably
- 43:18Speaker 7: the 27-28 season. But there's so much work to be
- 43:21Speaker 7: done as far as a clarification of who owns the team,
- 43:25Speaker 7: what percentage of revenue, and more importantly, the TV partners.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Gordy Tyrese, Halliburton. We've talked about him and what kind
- 43:34Speaker 3: of impact he could have in not only Indiana, but
- 43:36Speaker 3: in the East of the NBA, if he's back and
- 43:40Speaker 3: he's back and looked pretty good, looked healthy first game
- 43:44Speaker 3: in more than 16 months. What kind of impact is
- 43:47Speaker 3: he going to have on the Eastern conference race?
- 43:49Speaker 7: And a 16-month show is also 400 days. Can you
- 43:52Speaker 7: imagine not playing a sport live in competition for 400 days?
- 43:57Speaker 7: So the answer is he'll have an impact very much.
- 44:00Speaker 7: The Pacers, we all like those guys because they have
- 44:04Speaker 7: superior coaching in Rick Harlow, and they play a certain
- 44:08Speaker 7: type of a speed game, but with the element of fundamentals,
- 44:13Speaker 7: And it's one for all, all for one. So they're
- 44:15Speaker 7: really a fun team to watch. With Halliburton, for the listeners,
- 44:19Speaker 7: is that he got hurt in Game 7 in 2025
- 44:23Speaker 7: versus the Thunder. And we all thought the Thunder might
- 44:26Speaker 7: be the next dynasty after the Warriors. And suddenly last
- 44:30Speaker 7: year the Spurs didn't cooperate. And even the year before,
- 44:33Speaker 7: there's Sean. You know, I talked about it, that if
- 44:36Speaker 7: Halliburton plays in game seven, we don't know if there's
- 44:38Speaker 7: any thunder right now as far as possible being what?
- 44:41Speaker 7: A dynasty. He played well last night. The game was
- 44:44Speaker 7: at his former alma mater, the Iowa State Nationals. University Cyclones.
- 44:49Speaker 7: And how cool about this? He bought the student section
- 44:52Speaker 7: on both ends for the student body. It was a first-come, first-served.
- 44:57Speaker 7: The students got there at 11 o'clock at night the
- 44:59Speaker 7: night before to get those seats and to cheer for Halliburton.
- 45:03Speaker 7: What happened, Rick Carlisle took him. He played 16 minutes,
- 45:07Speaker 7: but the fans kept on yelling his name that Rick
- 45:10Speaker 7: told Halliburton to go in the locker room, take off
- 45:13Speaker 7: his sneakers, and come back in a.
- 45:18Speaker 7: With what I used to think as being on in loafers.
- 45:21Speaker 7: So the fans kept on yelling and Halliburton kept on
- 45:24Speaker 7: pointing to his feet and said, what? I'm not even
- 45:26Speaker 7: dressed right now anymore. I love it. Again, the fans
- 45:31Speaker 7: with their enthusiasm. And you know about Iowa State, I
- 45:34Speaker 7: had to mention, you know, Jeff, that's Jeff Hornacek, former
- 45:38Speaker 7: Utah Jazz great, has a level mount in case you're wondering, Sean,
- 45:41Speaker 7: the class of 1986.
- 45:43Speaker 3: Cyclones 86? I didn't even realize that for Jeff Hornacek.
- 45:48Speaker 7: Yeah, Jeff Hornacek with 1986, and Jeff Hornacek was a
- 45:52Speaker 7: second-round pick. So, again, you and I talk about this
- 45:54Speaker 7: all the time, is that whether you're drafted first round,
- 45:58Speaker 7: second round, undrafted, it's irrelevant. Once you get on a gridiron,
- 46:02Speaker 7: once you get onto the court or the dominant baseball,
- 46:06Speaker 7: it doesn't matter whether you're drafted or not drafted, can
- 46:08Speaker 7: you perform? And that's the beauty of sports.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Gordy, the first segment of the show, I was talking
- 46:13Speaker 3: about how many, how many wins your star players in
- 46:16Speaker 3: football are worth to your franchise or worth to your,
- 46:20Speaker 3: your college football team. Cause BYU is out without their
- 46:23Speaker 3: best player for the next four to six weeks. And
- 46:26Speaker 3: they got some huge games coming up with Notre Dame
- 46:29Speaker 3: in there and maybe Utah. He's out for the full
- 46:30Speaker 3: six weeks in basketball. It's obviously different. Individual players have
- 46:35Speaker 3: an even greater impact in basketball. Which NBA player is
- 46:39Speaker 3: worth the greatest amount of wins to his team?
- 46:45Speaker 7: Wemby. Victor Wemby Amber.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Yes. Okay.
- 46:50Speaker 7: Yeah, Wemby. And before that was Michael Jordan. And LeBron. Absolutely.
- 46:56Speaker 7: But Wembley right now in the present tense, when Wembley plays,
- 46:59Speaker 7: the chances of his team winning are absolutely greater. And
- 47:03Speaker 7: also right behind that slightly Nikolai Jokic of the Denver Nuggets.
- 47:09Speaker 7: So those two guys have the most impact of anybody
- 47:12Speaker 7: in the NBA because they really help their team as
- 47:17Speaker 7: far as all around. So even though Jalen Brunson played great,
- 47:22Speaker 7: he has a lot of bunch of sidekicks also that
- 47:24Speaker 7: are really talented, too. And, you know, Luka Dante's an L.A. Lakers.
- 47:28Speaker 7: He's a wonderful player that's one-sided as far as offensively.
- 47:33Speaker 7: But Victor Wembyama can do everything for his team, and
- 47:37Speaker 7: he does it with such a smile on his face.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I know that it's too early to be getting fully
- 47:44Speaker 3: into basketball on the college level. Utah men's basketball, and
- 47:49Speaker 3: a guy you know well, Alex Jensen, was successful in
- 47:52Speaker 3: an exhibition against UNLV. And look, exhibition basketball, I'm not
- 47:57Speaker 3: here to draw massive conclusions one way or another, but
- 48:03Speaker 3: second year, coming in, you've had more time to build
- 48:06Speaker 3: your program. The investment that we keep hearing about seems
- 48:10Speaker 3: to be taking shape or at least helping improve this.
- 48:13Speaker 3: We also know what an uphill climb it is. Realistically,
- 48:17Speaker 3: it's supposed to be in the Big 12 Conference. So
- 48:22Speaker 3: what should our expectations be in terms of a leap
- 48:24Speaker 3: forward for Utah basketball?
- 48:27Speaker 7: Sure. One, it's the best league in the country, top
- 48:32Speaker 7: to bottom. That's the first thing. I'm a Big East devotee,
- 48:36Speaker 7: but the Big East is not nearly as good as
- 48:38Speaker 7: the Big 12 overall. And the Big 10, who's a
- 48:42Speaker 7: juggernaut in all sports, but the Big 12 from 1
- 48:45Speaker 7: through 12, which is probably 1 through 16, is an
- 48:48Speaker 7: amazing league. All right, so for Alex Jensen's crew, if
- 48:54Speaker 7: they could win... We'll say seven league games this year.
- 48:58Speaker 7: That'd be really positive. That's positive. That's a point in
- 49:01Speaker 7: the right direction. And also, looking at the schedule, the
- 49:04Speaker 7: non-league schedule, they really don't go on the road at all.
- 49:07Speaker 7: So they have a chance to get momentum and confidence
- 49:10Speaker 7: by playing all those home games. And so that should
- 49:12Speaker 7: be interesting. What you want to do with a young
- 49:15Speaker 7: team is develop confidence, where this is how we're winning.
- 49:20Speaker 7: We won this game, and here's the reasons why. So
- 49:22Speaker 7: today with Alex Jensen, with the film work, when they
- 49:25Speaker 7: broke down the game against UNLV last night, they're going
- 49:27Speaker 7: to point out the positive things they did based on
- 49:31Speaker 7: the practice drills to reinforce it. So a lot of times, Sean,
- 49:34Speaker 7: players question, why are we doing all these drills? Sometimes
- 49:38Speaker 7: they're monotonous. And what happens when you're a coach, you
- 49:40Speaker 7: want to show the– During the film session, the exact
- 49:45Speaker 7: thing what happened in a positive way based on the
- 49:49Speaker 7: drill you did for the last two weeks in practice.
- 49:51Speaker 7: And that reinforces that the drill work is absolutely critical
- 49:55Speaker 7: how you do it in the game.
- 49:57Speaker 3: What's the list today, Gordy?
- 49:59Speaker 7: The list today, Sean, let's talk offense for a second.
- 50:02Speaker 7: This is only a Baker's dozen, Sean. So here's the
- 50:05Speaker 7: question to you, Sean. How much is a Baker's dozen?
- 50:08Speaker 2: Thirteen.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Thirteen.
- 50:10Speaker 7: I love it. That's right.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 50:11Speaker 7: I know Sean, you're a college graduate university, Utah slash
- 50:15Speaker 7: Weber state. So I know that you knew that quickly
- 50:18Speaker 7: NBA leaders in the most regular season games of scoring
- 50:22Speaker 7: 35 points or more for a Korea regular season. I
- 50:27Speaker 7: cut it off at 13. This is a who's who
- 50:30Speaker 7: in basketball, 35 points or more Korea wise quickly attributes.
- 50:35Speaker 7: To be a dominant punt producer, one, you need ball skills,
- 50:38Speaker 7: range shooting, and physical toughness. Two, be able to drive
- 50:43Speaker 7: the ball to the basket and finish. Three, if you
- 50:47Speaker 7: get fouled before that, you're a three-throw line resident as
- 50:52Speaker 7: far as scoring the ball from the foul line. And four, mentally,
- 50:56Speaker 7: you've got to be an alpha dog personality, supreme confidence baller. Hey,
- 51:01Speaker 7: I'm the best player on the court, especially in the
- 51:04Speaker 7: fourth quarter. Give me the ball. I can do magical
- 51:07Speaker 7: things for us. Here we go. Number 13, Steph Curry
- 51:11Speaker 7: had 168 games so far of 35 points or more.
- 51:15Speaker 7: Number 12, all-time, Dominic Wilkins, 170. Number 11, Kevin Durant, 182.
- 51:19Speaker 7: Number 10, Jerry West, 188. Number 9, Allen Iverson, 193.
- 51:30Speaker 7: Number eight, Elgin Bela, 197. Number seven, all-time, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 198.
- 51:39Speaker 7: Number six, James Harden, the only lefty in this group.
- 51:44Speaker 7: He's scored 202 times, 35 points or more. Number five, all-time,
- 51:51Speaker 7: Oscar Robinson, 213. Number four, the late, great Kobe Bryant, 236.
- 51:56Speaker 7: Number three, LeBron James, 249 times. The second greatest ever
- 52:05Speaker 7: score as far as 35 points or more in games
- 52:08Speaker 7: is Michael Jordan, 331. And the number one player of
- 52:13Speaker 7: all time, his nickname was the Big Dipper, of scoring
- 52:16Speaker 7: 35 points or more in a regular season NBA game
- 52:20Speaker 7: is Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt did it 381 times. Thus, That's
- 52:26Speaker 7: my list of today. Jazz basketball, just one note. Karl
- 52:30Speaker 7: Malone did it 151 times, 35 points or more.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Incredible.
- 52:36Speaker 7: Incredible.
- 52:37Speaker 8: Wilt.
- 52:38Speaker 7: Sean, I didn't say 25, 35 points or more. Wilt
- 52:40Speaker 7: did it 381 times. That's insane. It's a shame that he.
- 52:49Speaker 3: he played in the era that he did instead of now.
- 52:52Speaker 3: So like we didn't get to the contemporary fan doesn't
- 52:55Speaker 3: get to fully appreciate myself included.
- 52:58Speaker 7: Remember Sean, he was, he was seven foot tall, two
- 53:04Speaker 7: 75 waist, 34 inches.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Man.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 53:08Speaker 7: To talk about shoulders and everything else as far as
- 53:11Speaker 7: upper body strength. That was him.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Gordy. I always appreciate your time. We'll talk again soon.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Thank you, sir.
- 53:18Speaker 3: The Intermountain Snowmobile Expo is Friday and Saturday at the
- 53:21Speaker 3: Western Sports Park in Farmington. Spence Checketts will have tickets

- 53:27Speaker 3: today and tomorrow as he gives those away. All right,
- 53:30Speaker 3: we'll take a break. A very brief segment to close

- 56:07Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 56:10Speaker 3: legend Eric Weddle, Ring of Honor inductee earlier this year
- 56:14Speaker 3: at the University of Utah. friend of the program, E-Dub.
- 56:19Speaker 3: Welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 56:21Speaker 2: What's up?
- 56:22Speaker 7: What's up?
- 56:23Speaker 2: Doing great. Can't wait for the game on Saturday. Wide out.
- 56:28Speaker 2: Helmets are fire. Got our game tomorrow. Get a dub
- 56:34Speaker 2: and then enjoy the weekend.
- 56:36Speaker 3: Have you wished Utah head football coach Morgan Scali a
- 56:40Speaker 3: happy birthday yet today?
- 56:42Speaker 2: I shot him a text and told him he hadn't
- 56:45Speaker 2: even hit his prime yet. He's like, 50s inch and
- 56:48Speaker 2: closer and closer. I'm not sure I want to get there.
- 56:51Speaker 2: I don't worry about it.
- 56:54Speaker 3: He's still in great shape. 47 for Morgan, if I'm
- 56:57Speaker 3: not mistaken.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Thriving.
- 57:01Speaker 2: If we all can look that good at 47, I
- 57:04Speaker 2: think we're doing all right.
- 57:06Speaker 3: If at 47 years old, you're making millions of dollars,
- 57:09Speaker 3: you look as good as he does, you got a happy,
- 57:11Speaker 3: healthy family, and your football team is 4-0, you don't
- 57:15Speaker 3: have a lot of things to complain about.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Definitely not. Definitely not. So I should see him very
- 57:20Speaker 2: happy and smiling when he comes across the presser today.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Did you, did he come visit last weekend on the recruiting,
- 57:30Speaker 3: on the recruiting trip?
- 57:32Speaker 2: He did. He did. It was quite the surprise and
- 57:39Speaker 2: really cool. We don't, you know, Gage and I, especially Gage, right? Like,
- 57:47Speaker 2: having a head coach of a program come watch you
- 57:52Speaker 2: on a bye week when he could give you anyone
- 57:53Speaker 2: in the country was really cool. And it was a
- 58:00Speaker 2: great game to see him, to visit with him, and obviously,
- 58:03Speaker 2: not obviously, but Gage did everything in his power to
- 58:08Speaker 2: help us win and put on a pretty good performance.
- 58:12Speaker 2: So it was really cool, really cool for Morgan. and
- 58:15Speaker 2: humbled by it, and it kind of shows where Gage
- 58:19Speaker 2: is at priority-wise and how they feel about himself.
- 58:24Speaker 3: Big win for you against Del Norte, 33-21. The aforementioned
- 58:30Speaker 3: son of Eric Weddle, Gage, had 137 yards and two
- 58:33Speaker 3: touchdowns passing, 168 yards and a tutty on the ground
- 58:37Speaker 3: as well. What did he do on defense? Geez, what
- 58:40Speaker 3: a lame game.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, he had 10 tackles, a sack, forced fumble,
- 58:49Speaker 2: and again, we've played six games this season, and he
- 58:54Speaker 2: has yet to allow a catch in his coverage. He
- 58:57Speaker 2: doesn't get much action in the passing game, so he
- 59:00Speaker 2: just kind of runs around and just tries to knock
- 59:03Speaker 2: people out and keep everything in front of him. so
- 59:06Speaker 2: he did his thing 110 snaps played which is just
- 59:10Speaker 2: insane like I don't know how he does it but
- 59:13Speaker 2: luckily he does for us as a team and all
- 59:16Speaker 2: the other All the other guys we have on the team,
- 59:18Speaker 2: the Warriors, we had guys playing through injuries and guys
- 59:21Speaker 2: that hadn't played all year that had been called upon.
- 59:24Speaker 2: So credit to the coaches, players, the team. We scored
- 59:27Speaker 2: 20 in the fourth to come from behind and take
- 59:31Speaker 2: that victory. So moving forward, moving on, moving forward.
- 59:35Speaker 3: Congrats on that. I mean, that's awesome to see. It's
- 59:39Speaker 3: the time of year in football and even more so
- 59:41Speaker 3: in high school football because you're a little bit ahead
- 59:42Speaker 3: of the schedule today. for college and certainly the NFL,
- 59:46Speaker 3: but it's the time of year where like teams are
- 59:47Speaker 3: starting to deal with injuries and things are starting to
- 59:50Speaker 3: pile up. And even some star players around the country
- 59:53Speaker 3: are starting to go down. And I know you've seen
- 59:54Speaker 3: the reports out of Provo, LJ Martin, their star running
- 59:58Speaker 3: back offensive player of the year in the big 12 conference.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: He's going to be out for the next four to
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: six weeks, four weeks keeps them out of the Notre
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: Dame game. Six weeks keeps them out of the Utah game.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: So we'll see exactly what happens there. But it, it
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: inspired for me a larger conversation, Eric, about how much
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: the star players on a football team actually mean in
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: terms of like wins above replacement. Like if you take
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Gaines Weddle off of your high school football team, your
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: win loss record looks a lot different. If you take
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: Eric Weddle off of those old youth teams, the win
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: loss record looks very different. I think if you take
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: LJ Martin off this BYU team for six weeks, their
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: win loss record looks different. You obviously played it at
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: the highest level and there's depth in certain positions and
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: some teams do better with that than others. And Utah
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: looks like they're a pretty deep team this year, but
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: there's some guys like I'm, I'm looking at way Sean
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Parker and I'm saying, man, how many wins is that
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: guy worth by himself? So when I take like just
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: the stars that you played with, or you played against
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: just the elite, elite, elite at whatever level, how much
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: is an individual running back safety, anything but a quarterback?
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: How much is that guy worth in terms of the
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: win loss column?
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Oh, man, what a great question. Man, I think it
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: comes down to obviously the position and then the depth
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: at the position and then what are they being asked
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: within the scheme and the side of the ball that
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: it may be. I think the higher level you go,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: the less impact it has. and overall wins and losses,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: in my opinion, because, you know, the coaching, the players
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: are much more at an equal rate or the drop-up
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: isn't as big. And shoot, I mean, that running back
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: that got in there last week, what a cool story
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: for BYU. I don't remember his name, but I think
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: he's a walk-on and did his thing in the second
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: half or whatever it was and ran the ball well. So,
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: I just think it's going to be a hit. Hopefully
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: it doesn't have that big of an impact, but I
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: think it'll, it'll show itself against the better teams because
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: you're taking away, uh.
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: Like.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Martin's a superstar and he's not just a good back.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: He's a star. So it will have an impact, but
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: I don't know, like the wins and losses, I would
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: say maybe one, like, give or take like one, it
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: would be one, one winner loss that he's not there.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: In my opinion.
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: But maybe not, maybe not have that big of impact
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: overall because I've been like, we didn't have LT. I'm
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: just thinking about the times that star players like LeBain
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: and Thompson, we didn't have him in the second round
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: of playoffs at Indianapolis, but we still won because we
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: had Michael Turner behind him and Daryl Sproles, which, are
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: really good players. Yeah, they're not star like a Canadian,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: but they're, and we manufactured it and made it work,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: and there's other examples, but it'll be interesting to see
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: the games that BYU over the next four to six weeks,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: hopefully he's back because we want him back, but if
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: he's not, if it will have an impact over those
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: games getting missed.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: I mean, the Notre Dame game, it's Iowa State on
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Friday night, and then it's Notre Dame next weekend, and
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: that one was already circled for everyone for very obvious reasons,
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: and I think that you know, with LJ Martin fully healthy,
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: you feel decently confident hosting a really good Notre Dame
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: team without your best overall player on the whole dang
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: team that even from a mental standpoint, that's, that's a
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: hard thing to overcome.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: A hundred percent, a hundred percent. And hopefully I still
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: think they can, I think BYU is going to beat
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: them personally. I don't think Notre Dame's all that. And
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: I think it's a perfect game, defensive game. situational football.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: And then it comes back to the head coach and
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: culture and belief and inspiring and connection and all those
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: things that Kalani does so well. that maybe they could
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: be in, which I expect, an inspired group, maybe a
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: running back type by committee, then Bear runs the ball more.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: It doesn't matter whatever it takes for a game against
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Notre Dame, so we'll see what happens.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: All right, now let's talk about this Utah football team
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: coming off a bye week where there's been so many
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: years where we're like, oh, what a great time to
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: have a bye week. So-and-so's banged up and injured and whatnot,
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: and knock on wood, thankfully, this Utah team has been
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: relatively injury-free, very serious injury-free, and that's your guy Steve
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Saunders having an impact, certainly. But when you've got your
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: full roster and you're in a bye week and you
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: can just kind of clean some things up, what do
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: you expect now on Saturday night against Kansas? You're already
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: better than them. You've already played some pretty clean football.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: What should this team look like off a bye week?
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: Yeah, I think.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: First, let's always give a shout-out to Steve. You know,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: there's a reason why. I think the way Morgan handled
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: the spring, the summer, and camp had an impact on
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: how our guys are feeling and how they are trained
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: for football. And honestly, the truth is in the pudding.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: And I've said it all along, like, the training is top-notch.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: So got to give a shout-out to Steve like you
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: already did. On top of that, I think when you're
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: able to focus on ourselves and have the guys out
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: there to do so, right? We talked about the techniques
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: and fundamentals and getting back to the basics and really
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: hammering situational football like that. It just accelerates the process
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: of a team getting ahead of everybody else because you're
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: not having to hold back practice players. You're not having
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: to hold back guys from practice because they're injured or
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: they're banged up and you're not getting those physical reps.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: So I think it's huge. I think we're going to get... Kansas,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: their defense, I think, will give us some... It's a
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: good matchup for us to see how we handle a
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: good defense, a good run defense. I think what they're
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: strong at is what we like to do offensively. I'm
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: excited to see... what wrinkles we added, what different variations offensively,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: how are we going to, if we do stumble, what
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: is the counter, how are we going to adapt? So
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: I'm excited to see that. And really just to continue
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: our style of football and really clean, penalty-free, exciting, physical,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: smash-mouth football that we're known for, but also innovative and
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: explosive football and continue to progress with being a championship team.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: What do you think of the white-out uniforms, the icy helmets?
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: I know that a fashion show is not your favorite thing,
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: but it's a big deal for the fans.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm actually surprised.
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: That we're doing it for a home game because it's white,
- 1:07:14Speaker 8: so we usually don't... I don't know if we've ever wore.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: White unis at home. I don't know if you'd be
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: able to answer that for me but i think it's
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: cool like the guys like it the players love it
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: switching it up like i leave it up for our
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: leadership committee to figure out what we're wearing every week
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: and the accessories to because it's what the players want
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: right and if they're excited and they're juiced up geeked
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: up to go wear these white unis and the helmet
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: like it's awesome and if you're I don't know. It's
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: hard for me to have a negative thing to say
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: about it. So I'm excited to see it. I'm excited
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: to see the stadium on TV. I don't have nothing
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: going on Friday night or Saturday night, so I'm going
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: to be sitting in my theater watching the game, primed
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: maybe with a root beer zero, and watch us smash
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: the jig on it.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Is that the dad beverage of choice now for the
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Utah football legend, root beer zero?
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Well, if I have any energy drink left from the day,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: I'm allotted one energy drink usually a day. And in
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: most cases, that carries over to the next day. I
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: usually sip on it throughout the day, and then I
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: usually have it the next day because I don't really
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: drink a full one because it's a lot. But, yeah,
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: I mean, anything like, you know, cherry Coke, zero. I
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: like to, you know, if I could get a soda
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: a day, that's, I think that's okay. It's not too
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: over the top. Watch us do work. Pretty simple life
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: for me.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: I'm not judging. I'm not judging. I'm a chocolate milk guy.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: That's my beverage of choice. Just a gourmet chocolate milk.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: There you go. Do you add extra chocolate or do
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: you just buy it already made? What's the go-to for you?
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Putting chocolate syrup into regular milk, that's what we did
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: when we were kids before we had our own money.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: Now Now I'm willing to spend some premium. I'll go
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: to Whole Foods even to get my chocolate milk. That's
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: the gourmet thing I'll.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: Put in the fridge.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: Wow, that's on another level, man. I don't know. Can
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: we still hang out?
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: Next time I come over, we'll sit by the pool.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: We'll sip some chocolate milk. It's a weird combination, but
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: it's good stuff.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: Hey, I'm totally down. I'm totally down.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Have you talked to anyone in Michigan, Eric Weddle?
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Uh, you know, I, I texted coach with the, I
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: think the night before, two days before I was the
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: weekend of my, when I was going in the ring on,
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: and I just told him how much I loved him,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: appreciated him. And this never would have happened without him.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: And he shot me a quick text back as coach
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: with fashion would do. And, uh, just saying, you know, whatever,
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I can't remember. You're welcome. Whatever. And so honestly, uh,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: and we've talked about this, I have not spoken to
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: one coach or anyone from Michigan since that whole fiasco
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: of my comments about Underwood and the lack of QB play,
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: which we're all seeing. And so it's really interesting and
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: unfortunate because actually the only coach that I've had talk
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: to is Coach Powell, and he's texted me randomly, and
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: we've stayed in touch because of the Ring of Honor
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: and just the College Football Hall of Fame and You know,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: it's bigger, I think, with him and some other guys,
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: so I appreciate that. But the other guys, unfortunately, I
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: haven't talked to, and it's all good, I get it,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: but it's really unfortunate that you're going to lose out.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: I don't think Michigan really, in the grand scheme of things,
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: had a chance with Gage. He really liked it when
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: he went out there, but From what I did or
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: said to have an impact on myself when there's a
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: lot of other bigger issues with other kids and their parents,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: that that's the stance you take is unfortunate. But, hey, again,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: I don't lose sleep over Michigan. I really could care
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: less if they win or lose. And, you know, I'm
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: youth through and through. Like, I've been my whole life
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: and always will be. But, really, it's unfortunate. on that
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: sense because I think my relationship with those guys are
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: bigger than anything else. And if they had an issue
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: or problem, they should have just called or texted me,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: but they never did. So in my mind, it's not
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: an issue and we're moving forward.
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: It's honestly, I didn't know that there was like a
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: silent treatment thing going on that that's crazy to me,
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: but I don't want to get further into it because
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I'm sure it'll resolve itself at some point. You are
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: a football coach now and we all, we all see
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: what's going on there. And whether it's a love or
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: a hate reason that you're watching Michigan football, there's at
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: least a curiosity with this Utah fan base about what's
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: going to happen there. If you're a coach, don't you
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: have to make a change at the quarterback position based
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: on what we've seen?
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there's so much more involved with that situation, right?
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: Like, how much.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: We're not in those meetings. We're not in the game plan.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: We don't know exactly what is being taught. For the
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: most part, we can... we can guess. And as in,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: in my opinion, in my mind, like I can kind
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: of tell what is being asked or where I should
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: be and this and that, but, uh, you can't, uh,
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: if you have an opinion, then you'll get killed for it.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: So it's just, you kind of just go with the
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: flow in that instance. But I don't know, like the
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: money involved could put a roadblock on making a change
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: right now. If I, if I were them and, to
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: jolt this team in offense, you need to make a change.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: And I know you're not going to relieve play calling
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: duty from coach back. He's historically been a really good
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: play caller. And at times like, yeah, like you're, you're
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: figuring it out. So are they still going to figure
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: it out the next seven games with the quarterback and
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: the situation that you've already seen through spring, summer training
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: camp and five games in, or do you make a change?
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: And whatever that is, whether it's quarterback change, whether it's
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: play calling change, You need to make a change for
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: the team and the team dynamics because it sounds like
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: there is definitely some friction and or the team is
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: breaking up. And as a head coach... You have to
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: always make decisions on what's best for the program and
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: what's best for the team and keeping the team together
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: and competing and fighting every single Friday or Saturday night.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: So I believe that as a head coach, a change
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: needs to happen. Now, is it warranted for the quarterback?
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: There's a lot of other issues with that team and offensively.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: From what I've read and seen from the limited time
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: I've watched them, so that's ultimately up to Coach Witt,
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: and they've got to figure that out But at the
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: end of the day, they're just not very good. And
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: we'll see if they can rebound.
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: I'd expect them to rebound with Coach Witt and just
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: the lead leadership of that.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: But he's only been there six months. He's trying to
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: turn around a culture that we built and he built
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: and had a standing for 20-plus years at Utah.
- 1:14:49Speaker 8: People don't understand to build a culture and to– to
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: instill those characteristics, it takes time.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: And now you're struggling, having some adversity. Who's going to
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: be the expense of the head coach and to have
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: his back, right? Like, I don't know.
- 1:15:05Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: It would be interesting to see. So I think changes
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: need to happen. Long story short, any changes need to happen.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: What those changes are, we're going to eventually find out.
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: Eric Weddle for another minute or two. You want to
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: talk about how the San Francisco 49ers are 4-0 right now?
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Hey, let's tip our hat to the Niners. Every week
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: or every other day, I see another guy going down, though.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: So is that ultimately going to be the story of
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: the Niners?
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: Don't do that. Don't bring that up. Let me just
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: enjoy this for now.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Niners, hold on. Do I need to call Lynch and
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: be like, hey, to save the season and move forward
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: to maybe make this more than just a second-round exit?
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: Do you need to come get my boy Steve and
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: to change the way you guys are working out so
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: you guys are healthy like the Utes did. So I
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: don't know. Is that something I need to do for
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: your Niners, or do we need to keep Steve worried that?
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: You tell me.
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: I was hoping you were going to say, do I
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: need to call John Lynch and say I'll come out
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: of retirement again? You know how many Eric Weddle 49ers
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: jerseys I would buy if you ever signed?
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Hey, I look good in red. I'm not denying that, but.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: They're, hey, party's MVP level, even though he struggled for
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: a lot of that game against the Broncos. And I'm
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: just waiting for a team, you know, to make the
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Niners do something that they're not good at. But, man, Shanahan,
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: not a better play caller in the NFL than him.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: It's just when big games come around, then he tends
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: to forget how to play call or time management and
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: those types of issues. But that's a Niner thing. That's
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: not an Eric Lowe thing.
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: You Niner fans have to answer those questions and those
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: types of things.
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: Will they win in Seattle this weekend?
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Do I think they'll win in Seattle this week? I
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: don't think so. But I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: I think, honestly, I think Mike McDonald in Seattle, even
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: though the Chargers ended up scoring a bunch of points
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: in the third quarter. I think they'll force Purdy.
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: To do things that he's not very well equipped to do,
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: and that's throw outside the numbers, throw past 15, 20 yards.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: I think that's what he'll do. He'll pack the paint.
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: He'll get them off the spot. But Purdy's playing– Purdy's
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: always played good. So the only time he struggles is
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: if he gets pressure and he has to move off
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: the spot and has to throw outside the numbers.
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Can he do that? And then can Seattle score on
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: the Niners? The Niners have got one of the best
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: teams in the league, I think, for the most part.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: And so I think it's going to be a close game, toss-up,
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: rivalry game. And I can say going both ways, obviously
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: I'll take the home team because I think they're very
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: similar in defending champs.
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: The Vikings are also 4-0, which I think, at least
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: for me, was a decent surprise. The Kansas City Chiefs
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: are 4-0. And with that, it's Niners, Vikings, Chiefs that
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: are still undefeated teams right now in the NFL. Are
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: all three of those teams for real as at least,
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: you know, legit playoff teams? Or are the Vikings going
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: to come back to earth?
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Oh, I think they're playoff teams. I don't necessarily think
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: the Vikings at this point, seeing Kyler Murray play quarterback,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: I don't think that's a Super Bowl team as of
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: right now. Kansas City, obviously, because of the experience and
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: the history. And the Niners, so that's three. Who was
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: the fourth one? Was there four?
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: No, there's three. It's Chiefs, Niners, Vikings.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, those threes. Yeah, I think the Chiefs and Niners
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: are legit Super Bowl contenders. I'm not sold yet on
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: the Vikings until I see better quarterback play and offense play.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: They're winning because of their defense right now.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: The Is it time for the Chargers to reconsider the
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: whole Jim Harbaugh thing?
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: I don't think they will because they're notorious of hanging
- 1:19:21Speaker 8: on head coaches for a long time. I don't know
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: if it's because continuity or they would rather not pay
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: two coaches at once.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: But from everything I'm hearing and reading, it's how it's
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: been the last two years as Harbaugh has run that ship.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: I don't know, man.
- 1:19:45Speaker 8: You look at their schedule and how are they not 0-9?
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: And then you're looking at Holy's most total rebuild, burn
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: it up, you got the number one overall pick, potentially
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: their top three pick, then how do you rebuild this
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: roster around Herbert?
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: And then is Herbert the guy going forward? Maybe you
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: trade him and get a bunch of first-round picks and
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: going a different direction?
- 1:20:10Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Those are the questions that are going to happen because
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: I don't see it turning around, and it's unfortunate.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: What would you do with that Herbert situation? Because it's
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: kind of a love-hate with the fan base. Even some
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: analysts are like he's not the problem, and some are
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: like he is the problem. What would you do with Herbert?
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Well, I already know that he is. he's a franchise quarterback. Now,
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: to what level that is, that's to be determined, right? Like,
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: he's had a struggle in the playoffs, but he's shown
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: that he can lead a franchise. So you don't want to, like,
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: bank on some young kid. Like, I wouldn't do that.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: So I would continue, like, I know they drafted the
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: tackles over the last, like, five years. They drafted some
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: top talent on the offensive line, and they've just been hurt.
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: So.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: you've just got to remind yourself, like, hey, I'm trying
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: to build around him. They don't have any weapons on
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: the perimeter. So if I have an overall pick, I'm
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: drafting Jeremiah Smith, or I'm trading back to get a
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: second first-round pick or third, like three first-round picks, and
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: I'm getting, like, multiple receiver running back types to give
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: Herbert and have them grow together, right? So if there's
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the depth at that receiver position or maybe tight ends–
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: For running backs, if there's enough talent, high-end talent, I
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: would– because I think they're still a couple years away,
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: so really is Jeremiah Sons going to make that big difference?
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: If you feel that way, then you take them. If
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: you think the depth is there, trade back, get a
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: couple of other picks, and then build your roster out
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: around Herbert. So I'm keeping them, and I'm building around them.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: All right. Final prediction for Utah-Kansas before I let you go.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Uh, we're playing at home. What's the spread?
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: I haven't even looked. I think it's eight and a
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: half for Utah.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:12Speaker 7: Honestly, I think it's.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: Going to be like a 34, 10 type game. Maybe
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: like a, maybe, maybe like a 28, 31, seven, uh,
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: I think they win by double digits. I don't think
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: it's going to be a 40, 50-point output from what
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: I've read on their defense. And then depending on the rain,
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: who knows on that. I think it's a 17 to
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: 20-point victory, 30 to 10 around that area.
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: I lied to you. It's 15 and a half for
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: the Utes.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Okay. I still stick with what I'm predicting.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: 68 and wet is the forecast, but they never get
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: it right in Utah. We got crazy weather.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: All right. Appreciate you, dude. Have a great weekend. Good
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: luck to you and your Broncos, your Rancho Bernardo Broncos.
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: Tell the family we said hi.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: You got it, brother. Love you.
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: Love you, dude.
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: That's Eric Weddle, the Utah football legend, all things college football,
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: high school football, NFL football. You could pick his brain up.
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: on all of it. And yes, Morgan Scali, remember last
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: week in our conversation, Eric anticipated that, you know, during
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: the recruit or during the bi-week, there would be someone
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: down there to have a little visit with Gage Weddle.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: It ended up being RSNB Utes on Twitter, the head coach,
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: Morgan Scali, and Gage went off for 110 snaps, 300
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: plus yards on offense, three touchdowns. And a big defensive
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: day as well. So it's not like you didn't know
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: you wanted him. It's not like Morgan Scali didn't already
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: know that that's like the potential jewel of a recruiting class,
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: but hopefully it goes a long way with the Weddle family.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: And how about that? When I asked him the Michigan thing,
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: he had not revealed that publicly, as far as I'm
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: aware that Michigan basically stopped recruiting gauge Weddle after he
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: Eric made those comments about Bryce Underwood, which again, he
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: is fully correct and vindicated on, but you're gonna compromise
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: your ability to further add talent to your roster based
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: on some pettiness or a fear of how the local
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: fan base is going to react. Makes very little sense
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: to me.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: That that's wild. Also breaking news. Weddle says, I don't
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: think Michigan really had a chance at gauge. Well, it
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: had past tense. So, uh, I think we can rule
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: out Michigan for both of those things. We just said
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: as a landing spot for gauge, which may, which you
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: got to feel really good about a Utah fan. You
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: cross off a blue blood that might've been in the
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: way of landing gauge. Weddle the, I'm not going to
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: cross off any blue bloods on any player. Now gauge
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: is going to be less than, influenced by a big
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: fat check than other student athletes, than other recruits for
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: obvious reasons. But in the era that we're living in
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: with modern recruiting and modern college football, because of the
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: ability for teams like Michigan, if they want to, or Oregon,
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: if they want to, or Texas, if they want to,
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: to roll in and just say, Hey, you want, you
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: want your whole entire future set for you, whether you
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: play a snap for us or not, whether you make
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: it to the NFL or not, here's some NIL funds
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: because of that. I hesitate to completely write anyone off, but, uh,
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: that is encouraging news to be able to eliminate at
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: least one big time program with obvious ties. I mean,
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Lewis Powell is a great recruiter. Kyle Whittingham mentored Eric
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: to a certain extent. Um, Jay Hill, same thing. So
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: those guys may be out on the recruiting trail, which is,
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: if you're a Ute fan, doesn't guarantee that you're going
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: to get the guy because Georgia and Texas and BYU
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: are after him in a big way. But it's not
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: a bad thing to eliminate one suitor, so to speak.
- 1:26:43Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: We got to do the Daily Dump. We've got another
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: assortment of stories that you're going to want to hear, including... Kalshi,
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: the predictions market, which I think most of you listening
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: now can't use anymore, if I'm not correct. If I'm
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: not mistaken, I'm always not correct. Shout out to Shreyas
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: Lada and Salt Lake Tribune telling us, according to the
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: attorney general, even these daily fantasy games that have been
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: operating in Utah, technically illegal, but they're not prosecuting them.
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: So there's, I mean, you're still, That was an interesting
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: article by Shreyas the other day. It's supposed to be illegal,
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: but it's not. Anyway, Kalshi has new odds on the
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: Big 12 championship in football. I'll tell you where Utah
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: sits during the Daily Dump next. It's the Sean O'Connell

- 1:28:19Speaker 3: taken care of, that is not a DIY thing. Call
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Valley plumbing, heating and cooling. All right. Um, updated big
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: 12 championship odds here in the football season, according to
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: Cal she, one of the top predictive markets out there
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: right now, Georgia 38% chance to win the sec followed
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: by Alabama and Texas tied at 23% LSU given a
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: 9% chance Ole miss in Florida, both with a 2% chance.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: All right. Big 10. Ohio State, 45% chance to win.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Indiana's down to 22%. Oregon at 19%. UCLA at 4%.
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: Cal State does not mention Michigan. Going to have to
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: be less than one there. ACC seems to be the
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: league with the least parity in the mind of this
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: predictive market. 74% chance given to Miami to win the ACC.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: SMU is next with 6%. Wake Forest sitting third with 5%.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: And here we are in the Big 12 Conference. According
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: to Kalshi, as we head into another week of college football,
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: Friday night game for BYU against Iowa State. BYU, 16%
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: chance to win the league. Texas Tech, 29% chance to
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: win the league. James Peterson, what do you think Utah's
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: percentage assigned by cal she is byu 16 texas tech
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: is 29 where do you think utah's at they in
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: between are they behind texas tech i'm going to say
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: hopefully somewhere in between i'm going to say 18 they're
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: tied with texas tech for 29 most likely this is
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: right now so this is taking into account lj martin's
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: month plus absence yes this is like if you if
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: you're into this which you're not allowed you drive to
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: wendover to do it or if you're in saint george
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: right or southern utah drive to mesquite to do it
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: of course you drive to mesquite you put it in
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: on your phone on the calci app i mean that's
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: that's what they tell you that's what these companies tell
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: you you have to do casinos and whatnot they tell
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: you You've got to be present in the state where
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: it's legal.
- 1:30:46Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: So if you're going to bet at a sports book,
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: for example, old school, you've got to drive to– Wendover.
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: You drive across the border to another state drive to Wyoming.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: At one point draft Kings, it really worked that way
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: because I have the draft Kings app on my phone
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: and I tried to place a bet when I was
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: in like Florida or something. And I was like, yeah, Florida,
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: everything's allowed here. You can have pet alligators. You can
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: have a tiger.
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: It wasn't.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: And it was like, sorry, you can't do this. I
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: was like, what the heck? So you you close enough
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: to Georgia or something? You drove? No, I was just,
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: you just didn't. I just button mashed on my phone angrily.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: What did I do?
- 1:31:24Speaker 8: Wrong.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: Walking around to people. Hey, do you have any one
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: of those VPNs? I could, I could hide the presence
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: of my, my internet geo tag or whatever. So yeah, Utah,
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: 29% chance, according to Cal she tied with Texas tech.
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: So up there and look, it's the big three right
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: now on On the Calci odds, just like in the rankings,
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: I'm sure this is a tweet that compiled the top
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: teams in each league. But I'm sure you can find
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Houston odds and Oklahoma State odds and stuff like that
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: as well. But Utah, the predictive markets are saying you've
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: got just as likely a chance to win the conference
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: as anybody else in the conference. This is... something I
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: alluded to when we were talking with Gordy Chiesa, Euro
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: league and Euro league members and owners have rejected an
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: offer to join NBA Europe or to collaborate with the
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: NBA on a European basketball league. They want to be,
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: they want to say their own separate league. They don't
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: want to merge into this new NBA year. Now this
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: is really interesting to me. This feels like a major
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: inflection point for European basketball because the NBA Europe would not,
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: there would be zero chance that it could fail. If
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: the Euro league owners were like, yes, okay, fine. We
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: will collaborate with you and maybe negotiations can continue and
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: maybe future collaboration is a possibility. Realistically, like Gordy Chiesa said,
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: the NBA probably wants to control everything. They would probably
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: want to come in and change the way that Euro
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: basket does a lot of things. And for that reason,
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: these owners, especially owners of already profitable franchises over there,
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: were probably like, no, we're not going to accept that.
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: This is now a test of just how powerful the
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: basketball brand in the world is. The American basketball brand
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: in the world is. Because the NBA should be too
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: big to fail any of their ventures. They should be
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: so dominant, so established now that everything they do should work, right?
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: The G League works. I don't know how profitable it
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: is for the owners there, but it works because of
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: its association with the NBA. The WNBA worked because of
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: its association and its supplementation by the NBA for decades
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: until finally in the last couple of years, really, it's
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: taken on a life of its own and a profitability
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: of its own. And they're experiencing their own growing pains
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: and having to manage their own stuff and poor leadership.
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: And what do we do with these Sophie Cunninghams and
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: Caitlin Clark's and Asia Wilson's? And like, how do you,
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: how do you deal with stars? Because guess what? They
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: have them now. And for a long time, all respect
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: to the great players in the WNBA that preceded the
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: current crop, they weren't for the most part, stars on
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: the same level as the group that that is playing
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: right now. So the NBA has been this powerful entity
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: that either props up or keeps alive or launches all
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: these different franchises that end up working out. Okay. At least,
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: I mean, I'd have to do a deeper dive into
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: the G league to, to really get to know just
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: how bulletproof the NBA's business ventures are. But your old
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: basket saying no, instead of looking at the landscape and
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: saying like, if you can't beat them, join them. Your
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: league is saying, no, we're going to beat you. We
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: are already established here. We already have fan bases. We
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: already are signing the best talent that was either in
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: your league or wanted to be in your league. And
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: they came over here instead. This is going to be
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: a fascinating thing to watch because if your league has
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: decided to I want to compete against the NBA. And
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: the NBA says, well, we're still going to come into
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: Europe and we're going to compete against you. There will
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: be an eventual winner there. Or maybe the NBA will
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: never concede defeat, even if they're trailing behind and they
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: just keep dumping money into Eurobask into their NBA Europe.
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: How do you set the player market? How does Eurobasket survive?
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: How does Euroleague survive the If the NBA just offers
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: more money to players, because you would, of course, if
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: you're a basketball player, the ultimate goal is not to
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: play in Euro league, unless you're someone who just refuses
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: to live in the United States of America. Every one
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: of these guys wants to be an NBA player. Would
- 1:36:18Speaker 3: you rather, if the money's even similar, would you rather
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: stay and play for Barcelona? And they, they play, they
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: wear the same colors and do the same vibe as
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: the football team, the soccer team. Would you rather play
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: for that well-established longstanding? They pay well, or if the
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: money's similar, would you rather play for an official NBA affiliate?
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: The answer is probably you'd rather play for the NBA
- 1:36:43Speaker 3: affiliate because you would hope that it leads to an
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: opportunity in the NBA. Some kind of pipeline to the
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: NBA for sure. It's interesting in the original ESPN.com article,
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: it cites that, EuroLeague was created after FIBA and a
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: league called the ULEB, which is mostly the Italian and
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: Spanish leagues, but they added more as time went on.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: They were rival basketball leagues for the European continent, right?
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: And so they've already had... this in their history. This
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: was early 2000s. They've had this in their history where
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: they tried to have two big super leagues, if you will,
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: in European basketball exist, and they couldn't really coexist. So
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: you would think that the brand power and the money
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: that NBA owners have, and thus the league has, that
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: they would be able to figure out a way to
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: coexist if no merger could come out. But It's not
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: a guarantee that NBA Europe is the one that's the
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: last one standing if they can't figure out a merger,
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: because EuroLeague's been around way longer, and on that continent,
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: that is the standard for basketball. You would think that
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: the NBA would win out, though, but NFL Europe never...
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: That fizzled out. They didn't have a rival league, but still,
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: big brands don't always succeed when they try to expand. Ultimately,
- 1:38:16Speaker 3: this becomes... It's kind of like... I am really fascinated
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: by things like this. Like, you know what Jollibee's is?
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: No.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: It's a fast food franchise that's, like, ubiquitous. It's huge
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: in the Philippines. Oh, okay.
- 1:38:29Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: Jollibee's is their thing. Shout out to Jordan Clarkson, Filipino.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: They have like fried chicken and spaghetti and it's just,
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: it's kind of a weird menu, but it's their thing.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: And there's a couple in the United States. They've expanded internationally,
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: but in the Philippines, Jollibee's is so big that and
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: so good. And so firmly entrenched as a brand that
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: it has kept burger King subway McDonald's and some of these,
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: you know, we think unbeatable brands from really having a
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: major foothold in a, in a ton of success dominating.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: And they're still there in the Philippines. They're still there,
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: but they don't have the market cap and the market
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: share in the Philippines that that they do, that they
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: do it anywhere else. And it's like crown burger versus
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: McDonald's here. Like he just can't compete against crown burger here. Well,
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: here's another thing, right? Have you ever watched that documentary?
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: The donut King? No, I haven't seen it. Okay. You
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: should watch it. It's really fascinating. It's about a Cambodian
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: guy who has made it so that like Dunkin donuts
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: doesn't have any traction in the greater Los Angeles area.
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: I thought you were going to say in Cambodia, the
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: greater Cambodian era. No, this guy was a Cambodian immigrant.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: But from L.A., yeah. He was a Cambodian refugee, ended
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: up in L.A., and basically learned how... Wow. He fell
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: in love with donuts, and then he started franchising all
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: these other donut places. To this day, if you go
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: and you buy donuts in Southern California, the likelihood that
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: it's a Cambodian family behind the business is incredibly, incredibly high.
- 1:40:08Speaker 8: And.
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: the mom and pop shops there are so successful and
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: so entrenched that even like Dunkin' Donuts has had a
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: hard time. So that's what we're talking about here. We're
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: talking about this brand, the NBA, that is supposed to
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: be too big to fail, going in and taking on
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: an already established local competitor. And that local competitor, rather
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: than rolling over or selling out, is saying, no, we're
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: going to go ahead and fight you on this. which
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: is a crazy bold move. Can you imagine being a basketball, anything?
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: And then the NBA comes along and says, Hey, we
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: want to buy you. We want to partner with you.
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: And you say, no, I'd rather compete with you. I
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: applaud it. I love it. It's nuts. Like if the
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: NFL decides that it wants to roll into Canada, right?
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: We want to expand. We want a Toronto franchise. We
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: want a Vancouver franchise. We want a Saskatchewan franchise, the NFL.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: We're going to roll NFL football. You guys already like
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: tackle football, Manitoban franchise. Shout out to all the provinces.
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: Shut up, Winnipeg. You don't get one. Imagine though the
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: NFL comes rolling up North of the border. And it's
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: just like, Hey, Ottawa red blacks. We like this Bryson
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: Barnes kid that you guys signed. We really want to
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: collaborate here. Of course they like Bryson. Who doesn't like
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: to pick farmer? We want, we want to make, you know,
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: we want to make our franchise and your franchise. Like
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: we want to partner. We want to figure something. How
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: about we make the Ottawa red blacks? They're an NFL
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: Canada franchise.
- 1:41:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: And imagine the CFL just being like, nope. cups bigger
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: than the super bowl anyway. I mean, imagine. Yeah, no,
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: we we're, we're firmly established here. We have brand loyalty here.
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: The Argonauts will never be an NFL team. Can you
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: imagine this? That's what the NBA is facing now. And
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: I know it's never going to be like the number
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: one sports story. I promise you this will be whether
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: it's five years from now, 10 years from now, 50
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: years from now, this will be a very fascinating untold
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: or 30 for 30. I, I, I desperate James, let's
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: find a Euroleague franchise owner and get them on the show. Yeah.
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: .
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: .
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: has said, no, NBA, if you're going to
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: come into the European continent, we're going to compete with
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: you instead of collaborate with you. Yeah. Come to think
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: of it, too, there's been plenty of in-state college basketball
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: stars who had most of their pro careers overseas in Europe.
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: We might be able to use those guys, too, to
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: get in with the ownership to compete. comment on this situation. We'll, we'll,
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: we'll effort it. And we're going to give James some homework.
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: He's got to watch the donut King. Yeah, I do.
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: By the way, I think he ended up getting himself
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: like in crippling debt because of sports gambling, if I'm
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: not mistaken. So it's a, you know, the Venn diagram
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: crosses over full circle. It all comes back. Can we
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: do it? Let's fit in a quick injury report and
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: then maybe we can double up. Get the edition with Devin.
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: What do you think? This year with Deb next, we're
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: going to debut the edition with Dev YouTube at two
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: o'clock and injury report update brought to you by the advocates,
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: injury attorneys. If you've been injured in an accident, maybe
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: an auto accident, maybe any kind of accident. Maybe you're
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: just curious. If you have a personal injury case, call
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: the advocates.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: 801-355-5550.
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: You deserve an advocate. The Utah football injury report is,
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: Thankfully is not all that daunting for Morgan Scali and
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: his crew as they head into a weekend where they
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: will host Kansas whiteout night game. Can I Lopez is out.
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: I Garcia is out. Unfortunately, that is becoming the story
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: of Ike's Utah football career. You hate to hear that.
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: Can I, by the way, is that not the guy
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: that people identify as a, of it? hasn't been played
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: as a special kind of person. Hasn't been, you didn't
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: let me finish my sentence.
- 1:44:54Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: Hasn't been played yet. Can I Lopez gets a shout out.
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: We already recorded edition with dev, right? Can I Lopez
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: gets a shout out from dev? Not, not for being injured. Okay. No, no,
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: he doesn't. So listen to dishing with dev and see
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: what he says about, can I Lopez the, the Hawaiian
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: tight end who unfortunately has not been impactful this year
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: because he's been banged up questionable. And this makes me
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: a little nervous. Questionable against a really good run team
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: in Kansas, Carson Kalfusi and also Semitel Longa, but Carson
- 1:45:26Speaker 3: Kalfusi being questionable. This is, he keeps appearing on the
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: injury report. Good for him playing through some of this stuff,
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: but questionable to probable to hopefully available in initial injury
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: report has Carson Kalfusi is questionable. Semitel Longa is questionable.
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: Can I Lopez and Ike Garcia are out? Kansas has
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: got a pretty long list of guys who are out.
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: Nobody that jumps out immediately as like huge contributors. Brian
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: Haney did tell us yesterday that it's the number two
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: running back is out. And that that's a pretty big
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: loss for any program to have your, your change of
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: pace back out, especially team that runs as well as
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: they do. So we'll see how that impacts them. Trevon McAlpine,
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: by the way, is a great name. Absolutely. Just the
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: all-name team. Defensive tackle, Trevon McAlpine. Wonder if he has
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: any roots in Utah County. Get it?
- 1:46:26Speaker 8: McAlpine?
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: Yeah, McUtah County, maybe. See what you're doing with your
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: negative influence? All right. Dish it with Dev next. It's
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. That's
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: me in the corner.
- 1:46:42Speaker 9: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:46:45Speaker 9: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 1:46:48Speaker 9: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: Time for a PGA Tour leaderboard update from the Bay
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: Current Championship brought to you by Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf.
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: Many locations all up and down the Wasatch Front. Great
- 1:47:11Speaker 3: deals going on right now. Head over there. 50% off
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: the Ben Hogan apparel line. Tell them OC sent you.
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: Freshen up the fits for your golf outings. All right, James,
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: what's going on at the Bay Current Championship? I guess
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: what went on in round one of the Bay Current Championship? Yeah,
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: so they're playing in Japan. So, you know, that's what.
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: That's like almost like Australia. It's 15, 16 hours away.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: So they're playing. They played yesterday. Round two is going
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: to start tonight, Friday in Japan. So that's the situation there.
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: Jacob Bridgman is your leader in the clubhouse. He's at
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: eight under. One shot behind him is Jordan Smith at
- 1:47:55Speaker 3: seven under and alone in second. A handful of guys
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: tied for third at six under. Pearson Cody, Ricky Castillo
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: in that group, Mack Meisner. As well, Max Homa. And
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: then to round out the top ten, tied for seventh
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: at five under, two shots off the lead, Michael Theobaldson.
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: excuse me. Let's see. Christopher Ventura and Andrew Putnam, David
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: Lipski in that group. Tony Finau competing. He was even
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: after one round of play. He's tied for 46th. Probably
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: going to be around that cut line again, hopefully. Our
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: guy Tony plays the weekend out in Japan. That's your
- 1:48:41Speaker 3: PGA Tour leaderboard update brought to you by Uintah Golf.
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: Drivers starting at $ 299. 99 right now.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: Woo!
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: Great deals going on at Uintah Golf. All right, we've
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: got tickets to give away in about 10 minutes here
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: on the show before we wrap things up. Thursday night football.
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: Not the most stellar of matchups. Tampa Bay is the
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: only winless team left in the NFC. There are four
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: in the AFC that have yet to win a game.
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: Tampa is the only 0-4 team on the NFC side
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: of things. They take on the Dallas Cowboys. That is
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: a road game for the Buccaneers, who have lost 33-27
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: to the Bengals, 23-19 to the Browns, 23-16 to the Vikings, 17-14...
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: to the Packers. The, the, the Cowboys are not great.
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: They're having pass rushing problems, but the Cowboys are two
- 1:49:48Speaker 3: and two. And this is one of those Thursday night
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: football games, nine and a half point favorites, by the way,
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: are the Dallas Cowboys. This is one of those Thursday
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: night football games that if you have, I don't know,
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: Halloween costume shopping, you want to do tonight. If maybe
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: you want to carve the pumpkins and leave this on
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: in the background and kind of semi pay attention. I
- 1:50:13Speaker 3: don't anticipate that this is going to be your best
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: game of the year in the National Football League. Two
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: and two Dallas Cowboys lost to the Giants beat the
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: commanders lost to the Ravens beat the Texans 3430 which
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: might be a more impressive impressive win if preseason expectations
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: for the Houston Texans actually held true. But the Texans
- 1:50:37Speaker 3: are 0 and 4 one of those Oh, and four
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: teams in the ACC that we just mentioned.
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: Hey, AFC.
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: The AFC.
- 1:50:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: We're talking a lot of college football, right? Now it's
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: interesting just how close the games, the bucks had played,
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: like all those scores you rattled off one score games,
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: a couple of them, one of the, a field goal game,
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: another one, four point game. So one of those own
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: four teams that's had terrible luck in one score games,
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: or maybe just that's indicative of like coaching or, Players
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: not being able to execute well down the stretch for
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: whatever reason. Baker Mayfield's still out, right? That's part of things. But, like, man,
- 1:51:18Speaker 3: you expect at least one of those close games to
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: go your way. So just a tough start to the
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: season for the Bucs, obviously. But it feels closer to
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: being right for them than your typical 0-14 based on
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: those scores, don't you think? Well, yes. And when you
- 1:51:33Speaker 3: talk about them being close games, the– It's just not
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: turning into points for the Buccaneers. They're not able to
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: get it in the end zone. They've got more first downs,
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: total first downs than their opponents through those four games.
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: They're out gaining people on the ground, 24 rushing first
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: downs to 21. They're just not, you know, we've seen this. Honestly,
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: Utah plays a team like this. Kansas, their numbers and
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: their points don't match up, right? Yards on the ground, especially,
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: they just aren't, they're stalling out in the red zone.
- 1:52:12Speaker 3: They're having to settle for field goals. They're missing some
- 1:52:15Speaker 3: of these field goals. And the Tampa Bay Buccaneers need
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: their quarterback back. It's just, right, they've three passing touchdowns
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: on the year in four games. They've thrown more interceptions
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: as a team than they have passing touchdowns on the year.
- 1:52:36Speaker 5: Yikes.
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: They've, they've given up 16 sacks. The average right now
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: in the NFL through four games is like seven and
- 1:52:43Speaker 3: a half sacks. And they've given up 16 so far
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: this year through four games. That's those are college football numbers.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: That is not good. And you know, good luck to
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: Tampa Bay trying to get into wind column tonight on
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: the road. Oh, you're not pulling for the Cowboys. No,
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: I never do. I never will. And, and this seems
- 1:53:04Speaker 3: like a winnable game for as winnable as an Owen
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: 14 can have at this point in the season, because
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: it's not like Dallas has been spectacular either, but you know, the,
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: the betting odds have this being probably a comfortable win
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: for Dallas at home. So we'll hopefully it's a better
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: game than it looks like on paper, by the way,
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: if you don't want to, if you get bored of
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: that game, we've got, we've got the only MLB game
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: on the station tonight. The last, maybe the closeout game
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: for the Chicago White Sox over the Cleveland Guardians, the
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: last division series, still undecided. So that's 5.30 pregame coverage here,
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: 6 o'clock first pitch. So you got at least one
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: other option if you get bored of that prime video game.

- 1:53:58Speaker 3: pair if you could answer a trivia question. That's next

- 1:54:40Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put together this year? They're one
- 1:54:45Speaker 3: half of the Thursday night football game this year. 877-353-0700.
- 1:54:50Speaker 3: Touchdown passes for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so far in
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: the 2026 season. For a pair of tickets to Skillet
- 1:54:58Speaker 3: at the Union Event Center on October 23rd. The Drive
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: with Spence Checketts is next. He is here in our
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: Broadway studios. Crosstalk brought to you by our friends at
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: Advanced Window Products, 801-850-9100. $ 2, 500 off, 10 windows or more,
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: and a lifetime warranty on those windows. Hi, Spence.
- 1:55:16Speaker 5: Went down a deep local MMA rabbit hole last night.
- 1:55:22Speaker 3: And sent me a grainy video. I appreciate it.
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: Watching my Yanks just... trip over their own. You know what?
- 1:55:31Speaker 5: The bats weren't quiet. I'm like, you know what? I
- 1:55:32Speaker 5: want to see if this Berkman, uh, you know, video
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: deal is real. If it's out there, it's out there.
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: Jeremy Horn, Josh Berkman, you described it exactly. I went
- 1:55:42Speaker 5: down and then there are actually like Reddit threads about
- 1:55:47Speaker 5: how this beef came to be.
- 1:55:48Speaker 8: Really?
- 1:55:49Speaker 5: And I saw Josh this morning. Didn't have time to,
- 1:55:52Speaker 5: didn't have a chance to bring it up with him.
- 1:55:55Speaker 3: It's like 20 something years old.
- 1:55:56Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: But here's what I'm thinking. Rematch. rematch yeah josh is
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: 45 and jeremy is 52 jeremy's 52 now 51 51
- 1:56:10Speaker 3: he's eight years older than me.
- 1:56:11Speaker 5: What do you what do you think would happen if
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: those two fought right.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: Now uh probably kind of the same thing.
- 1:56:20Speaker 5: Josh claims jeremy took the coward's way out what's the
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: coward's way out he wanted to stand up and strike
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: And Jeremy.
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: Didn't watch the fight. Look, man, took Jeremy down three times.
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: I wasn't there.
- 1:56:32Speaker 5: I'm just telling you what my friends on Reddit said.
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: It makes no sense. Josh, Josh picked Jeremy up and
- 1:56:40Speaker 3: slammed him like twice and then took him down another time.
- 1:56:43Speaker 5: So maybe he was just mad that he lost.
- 1:56:45Speaker 3: Probably.
- 1:56:45Speaker 5: Do you know the origin of the beef?
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: I don't.
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: You have to know.
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: I really don't. You're, you're part of the deal. You're
- 1:56:53Speaker 3: a local MMA celeb. It's preceded my, uh, My training
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: at Jeremy Horn.
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: Well, my understanding after reading the Reddit threads is that
- 1:57:02Speaker 5: was very unlike Jeremy to do.
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: It is very unlike Jeremy.
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: And the funny thing is there, there's like a MMA
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: blog that interviewed Jeremy after and Jeremy basically, he apologized,
- 1:57:18Speaker 5: but he's still, he's like, I still hate him, but
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: I shouldn't have done that. Essentially.
- 1:57:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:57:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:57:22Speaker 5: The origin of the beef is allegedly it's online. So
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: it must be true. Josh said some untoward things about
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: Jeremy's significant other. And that made Jeremy upset.
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: That would make sense.
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: I feel like you don't want to talk about this.
- 1:57:38Speaker 9: I don't.
- 1:57:39Speaker 3: I wasn't training at Jeremy's gym yet. You're the one
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: that told me about it. How am I the expert?
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: And you're over there, duh. I didn't even know it
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: was a thing until you told me yesterday.
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: And then you spent an hour on Reddit?
- 1:57:49Speaker 5: More than that. The baseball game was boring, dude.
- 1:57:53Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:57:54Speaker 5: You know, it's funny watching... I've been watching the Yankees
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: since 1990, and I badly miss the old Yankee Stadium.
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: The new Yankee Stadium is basically a glorified mall. I
- 1:58:06Speaker 5: don't want the option of buying sushi when I'm at
- 1:58:08Speaker 5: a baseball game. The energy in that building was dead
- 1:58:11Speaker 5: right away. So, like, they're not getting done. So, just
- 1:58:15Speaker 5: decided to learn more about our local MMA scene. Okay.
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: I appreciate you.
- 1:58:20Speaker 5: Are you a Halloween guy? Are you a let's get
- 1:58:21Speaker 5: dressed up and get crazy for Halloween?
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: No.
- 1:58:25Speaker 3: Have you ever been?
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: No.
- 1:58:26Speaker 5: Not even, like, in college?
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: No.
- 1:58:28Speaker 4: What?
- 1:58:28Speaker 8: What?
- 1:58:30Speaker 3: I'll tell you why. Because I was working in bars
- 1:58:34Speaker 3: and clubs on Halloween in college. And when you talk
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: about the worst night of the year to be working,
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: it is Halloween.
- 1:58:43Speaker 5: That makes sense.
- 1:58:45Speaker 3: Because everybody is scantily clad. All the dudes are fired
- 1:58:52Speaker 3: up and ridiculous over the whole thing. They're all still
- 1:58:55Speaker 3: going home alone like they would any other night. I'll
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: push back on that.
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: And then.
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: They get extra froggy on Halloween. Full moon. They're dressed
- 1:59:07Speaker 3: as somebody else, so they think there's a subconscious, I
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: can do what I want now. It's not good.
- 1:59:13Speaker 5: Speaking of which, Venus is currently in retrograde.
- 1:59:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: Went to yoga this morning.
- 1:59:18Speaker 3: Okay, great. Can we talk about something that's actually salient?
- 1:59:22Speaker 5: Well, I was just going to let you know you
- 1:59:23Speaker 5: have until October 18th to process the last 18 years
- 1:59:27Speaker 5: of your life.
- 1:59:27Speaker 7: Okay, wow.
- 1:59:28Speaker 5: And then Mercury will move into retrograde. And then apparently
- 1:59:31Speaker 5: that's when all the manifestation, all the 25-year-old white women
- 1:59:35Speaker 5: do comes to fruition.
- 1:59:37Speaker 3: Makes perfect sense. They're all thriving.
- 1:59:39Speaker 5: Just warning you.
- 1:59:40Speaker 3: They're all doing great.
- 1:59:41Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 1:59:43Speaker 3: Hurricane Rachel is... Going to actually hit Salt Lake City,
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: according to multiple weather reports.
- 1:59:51Speaker 5: Is this what we're dealing with this weekend?
- 1:59:52Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:59:53Speaker 3: The tropical depression will not reach its full strength until Monday.
- 1:59:57Speaker 3: But moisture, wind, rain, et cetera, expected for Saturday night,
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: potentially because of a hurricane here in Utah. Isn't that funny?
- 2:00:05Speaker 5: It seems odd to me.
- 2:00:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Of course, we have to call it Hurricane Rachel.
- 2:00:11Speaker 5: Good call.
- 2:00:12Speaker 3: Come on. I got you.
- 2:00:13Speaker 5: No, that was good. That was good.
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: Come on.
- 2:00:15Speaker 5: The Utah accent is undefeated.
- 2:00:17Speaker 4: Milk.
- 2:00:18Speaker 5: Mountain.
- 2:00:19Speaker 3: Layton. That's not even an accent. It's just a mispronunciation
- 2:00:23Speaker 3: that is endearing.
- 2:00:25Speaker 5: Hurricane. Sure, sure. Will you be attending the football match
- 2:00:31Speaker 5: on Saturday?
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:00:32Speaker 5: You will?
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: I will.
- 2:00:35Speaker 5: Will you be on the sideline?
- 2:00:38Speaker 8: Uh.
- 2:00:38Speaker 5: Depends on how wet it is, I guess. They have
- 2:00:40Speaker 5: kind of changed the guidelines.
- 2:00:42Speaker 3: Also, they're putting in those northern end zone boxes. I
- 2:00:48Speaker 3: spend a good half of every game standing there on
- 2:00:52Speaker 3: that wall, my back to that wall. So now I can't.
- 2:00:55Speaker 5: Well, maybe as a former player, you will be afforded
- 2:00:58Speaker 5: grace that someone who didn't play there was not afforded.
- 2:01:02Speaker 5: Because I was standing where you're describing. chatting up with
- 2:01:07Speaker 5: the guys that do the nets when the field goal
- 2:01:09Speaker 5: thing happens.
- 2:01:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:01:11Speaker 5: And I don't know who did this, but they sent
- 2:01:15Speaker 5: this poor 18 year old intern over to the sideline
- 2:01:19Speaker 5: where I was standing. And he said, can I see
- 2:01:21Speaker 5: your credential? I said, sure. He said, you got to
- 2:01:23Speaker 5: go to the press box.
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: It's probably because you were like sitting on the bench
- 2:01:28Speaker 3: and stealing helmets from kids.
- 2:01:30Speaker 5: Hold on. We'll get there. We'll get there.
- 2:01:32Speaker 3: Like, Hey dev, Hey dev, grabbing a ball, throwing it
- 2:01:35Speaker 3: to him.
- 2:01:36Speaker 5: I didn't quite do that.
- 2:01:38Speaker 3: Morgan! Hey, buddy. Happy birthday.
- 2:01:42Speaker 5: Slipped the grip. You don't know what that means. So
- 2:01:44Speaker 5: then the gentleman who does the net, very nice guy,
- 2:01:50Speaker 5: turns to the intern and says, do you know who
- 2:01:52Speaker 5: that is? And I said, please don't do that. And
- 2:01:55Speaker 5: then as I was walking to go up to the
- 2:01:58Speaker 5: press box, several... It's like, dude, that's Ryan Seacrest. You
- 2:02:02Speaker 5: can't send him up to several... Is that Brad Pitt?
- 2:02:05Speaker 5: several enthusiastic north end zone fans start yelling get out
- 2:02:08Speaker 5: of here spence they were celebrating that i was asked
- 2:02:12Speaker 5: really yes so that's number one maybe they'll afford you
- 2:02:15Speaker 5: grace okay and i want to be clear because paul
- 2:02:17Speaker 5: if you're listening and we know that you are hi
- 2:02:19Speaker 5: paul i'm happy to i don't want to cause any
- 2:02:22Speaker 5: trouble i belong in the press box that's fine i
- 2:02:26Speaker 5: mean local celebrity whatever it's not a big deal okay
- 2:02:28Speaker 5: um so utah state game okay on the sideline walking
- 2:02:34Speaker 5: around Go on the other end to watch Utah State
- 2:02:37Speaker 5: warm up.
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: It's hot.
- 2:02:40Speaker 5: Had a long night the night before. Like, I'm going
- 2:02:43Speaker 5: to have a seat on the bench all the way
- 2:02:46Speaker 5: down at the end.
- 2:02:47Speaker 7: Okay?
- 2:02:48Speaker 5: So it's Utah State's bench, adjacent to where they're warming up.
- 2:02:51Speaker 5: Sat down for five minutes. Walked around the field. Went
- 2:02:55Speaker 5: up to the press box.
- 2:02:56Speaker 3: Did the thing.
- 2:02:57Speaker 5: Get the call. Can't sit on the bench.
- 2:03:01Speaker 8: So.
- 2:03:01Speaker 3: Maybe you Bronco got mad because you're sitting on his bench.
- 2:03:04Speaker 5: I don't know who got mad, but somebody, I think
- 2:03:07Speaker 5: I do know, but somebody escalated the message. Like, Hey,
- 2:03:10Speaker 5: Spencer's sitting on the bench. It was 45 minutes for
- 2:03:13Speaker 5: the game. Let's be clear. But the point of the
- 2:03:17Speaker 5: message is I would like you to now test these
- 2:03:19Speaker 5: boundaries because I've been scolded and I need to make
- 2:03:22Speaker 5: sure that I'm not causing trouble.
- 2:03:23Speaker 3: So you want me to walk around on the sideline
- 2:03:26Speaker 3: during the game? Don't you know? I am.
- 2:03:28Speaker 5: You can say that if you'd like. I just, being
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: a former player, And maybe you have former player vibes,
- 2:03:35Speaker 5: you know, I mean, you look at me and you're
- 2:03:37Speaker 5: kind of like, is that guy like a male model?
- 2:03:38Speaker 5: You don't, you're not like a football player.
- 2:03:40Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 2:03:41Speaker 5: Like, yeah, it's awkward and embarrassing at times.
- 2:03:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:03:44Speaker 5: But you look at you and you're like, that guy
- 2:03:46Speaker 5: must've played here at one point.
- 2:03:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:03:47Speaker 3: I don't think so. I don't think that that's the
- 2:03:49Speaker 3: reaction from either of us, honestly, but it's fine.
- 2:03:51Speaker 5: You, you give off football player vibes.
- 2:03:54Speaker 3: Okay. That's good.
- 2:03:55Speaker 5: It's all right.
- 2:03:55Speaker 3: Especially when I played basketball.
- 2:03:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:03:57Speaker 5: No, I don't ever want to play basketball.
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: That's what I guess. That's what I give off football
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: player vibes. Uh, okay. Before I get out of here,
- 2:04:05Speaker 3: how many wins is LJ Martin worth on the, on
- 2:04:10Speaker 3: the BYU football roster?
- 2:04:11Speaker 5: It's a great question. Um, well, you know, when, when, when,
- 2:04:17Speaker 5: when we had a ride on the show, he actually
- 2:04:20Speaker 5: talked a lot about Sione mall also unavailable this week.
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: Correct.
- 2:04:25Speaker 5: Um, it makes it really hard to believe that they
- 2:04:30Speaker 5: can be Notre Dame. I think they're going to be
- 2:04:32Speaker 5: fine this weekend against Iowa state, but I wouldn't be surprised, Sean,
- 2:04:36Speaker 5: if that game in the second half is a little
- 2:04:38Speaker 5: bit dicey, you know, I didn't, I was stayed hung
- 2:04:41Speaker 5: 45 on West Virginia, maybe West Virginia is atrocious defensively,
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: but I didn't think they could win a game like that.
- 2:04:47Speaker 5: I thought all year long, Iowa state was, is going
- 2:04:49Speaker 5: to be 2017, 17, 14, you know, whatever. Um, I
- 2:04:54Speaker 5: have not checked the line this morning. I would imagine
- 2:04:56Speaker 5: it has moved because they're without Isaiah Glasker. They're without
- 2:05:00Speaker 5: Andrew Gentry. They're without Raider to Mooney. They're down to
- 2:05:04Speaker 5: like their fifth string running back. They did not go
- 2:05:07Speaker 5: solidify that position in the portal when a lot of
- 2:05:09Speaker 5: BYU people felt they needed to because of LJ's history.
- 2:05:12Speaker 5: And the other thing is LJ Martin is a legitimate
- 2:05:15Speaker 5: NFL running back. So you got to make sure that
- 2:05:19Speaker 5: you're keeping them on ice and for the next phase
- 2:05:22Speaker 5: of his life. But I mean, at this point, is
- 2:05:24Speaker 5: he even back for the Utah game?
- 2:05:26Speaker 3: Six weeks?
- 2:05:27Speaker 2: No.
- 2:05:28Speaker 3: If he's out four to, it says four to six weeks,
- 2:05:31Speaker 3: the fifth week is Utah. Yeah. So if he's out
- 2:05:35Speaker 3: six weeks, he misses Notre Dame, Utah, Baylor, in addition
- 2:05:39Speaker 3: to you, Iowa state and some other stuff going on.
- 2:05:42Speaker 5: And Baylor just went down to BDSU by a million.
- 2:05:44Speaker 3: Right. So Baylor's four one. It looks really good.
- 2:05:46Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:05:48Speaker 5: Like, defensively, even with some of the injury issues they have,
- 2:05:52Speaker 5: it feels like BYU, like you can't run the ball
- 2:05:54Speaker 5: on them, right? So that's what Iowa State wants to do.
- 2:05:57Speaker 5: I'm not worried about them on Friday. It makes, it
- 2:06:01Speaker 5: was going to be a tough task versus Notre Dame anyway.
- 2:06:04Speaker 5: You know, the ESPN future progression, you know, prediction models
- 2:06:08Speaker 5: has Notre Dame as like a 12, 13 point favorite
- 2:06:11Speaker 5: in that game and without LJ. And then the Andrew
- 2:06:15Speaker 5: Gentry has 43 starts. What's the most on that offensive line?
- 2:06:18Speaker 5: The bottom of the tallow kid, the freshman who was
- 2:06:20Speaker 5: really highly recruited and is highly thought of stepped in
- 2:06:24Speaker 5: and had two false penalties in the first series against TCU.
- 2:06:27Speaker 5: Like BYU is in danger of experiencing what we experienced
- 2:06:31Speaker 5: here like three years ago.
- 2:06:33Speaker 3: Correct.
- 2:06:33Speaker 5: You know, so you got to imagine they're going to
- 2:06:37Speaker 5: be super cautious and hold everyone out that they can
- 2:06:40Speaker 5: this weekend with an eye on Notre Dame. But I
- 2:06:43Speaker 5: heard you earlier talk about the prediction models to win
- 2:06:46Speaker 5: the league now, and most data points right now today,
- 2:06:52Speaker 5: most data points do favor Utah to win the Big 12,
- 2:06:54Speaker 5: and BYU feels like they might be third at this point.
- 2:06:57Speaker 3: Ten-and-a-half-point favorite still, BYU against Iowa State.
- 2:07:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think Friday night's going to be that
- 2:07:02Speaker 5: big of a deal for them.
- 2:07:03Speaker 3: I think it's a little scary, but they have the
- 2:07:04Speaker 3: second-best rush defense in the conference, and that's where Iowa
- 2:07:08Speaker 3: State's going to have to make their hay. Unless Aiden
- 2:07:11Speaker 3: Floor is just going to throw two more touchdown passes
- 2:07:13Speaker 3: from the running back. He's good, man.
- 2:07:14Speaker 5: He's fun.
- 2:07:15Speaker 3: He's a good player. Stay tuned for The Drive with
- 2:07:18Speaker 3: Spence Checketts. Thanks for listening to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:07:20Speaker 3: We'll do it again tomorrow on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
