- 0:18Speaker 1: Hello, Hello, Emily, abouty here, coming at you for five
- 0:22Speaker 1: minute Friday. I'm Hurtle, and today I am doing things
- 0:25Speaker 1: a little bit differently because I.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Am calling in reinforcements.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm sitting in a Paris hotel room with my dear
- 0:34Speaker 1: friend Ashley, and we decided that what better way to
- 0:40Speaker 1: celebrate a fun week than with a little five minute
- 0:43Speaker 1: flash Q and a for five minute Friday. I know,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I know you're excited. Ash is a career journalist. We
- 0:52Speaker 1: have been friends for some time now. We met god
- 0:55Speaker 1: like maybe eight years ago or so doing CrossFit. We
- 0:58Speaker 1: traveled over here, you're together for the marathon, are now
- 1:02Speaker 1: adventuring in Paris, and thought this would be a fun
- 1:06Speaker 1: thing to do before heading out to watch some burlesque tonight.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So without further ado, I think we're ready. I think
- 1:15Speaker 1: we're ready. Here are you ready? See we are in France.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When you're ready, you say we we we Okay, she's ready.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Here we go ready. First question croissant or macaroon? Croissant?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Go to karaoke?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Song man, I'm gonna say we didn't start the fire
- 1:33Speaker 1: by Billy Joel. Favorite city in the US, it's got
- 1:37Speaker 1: to be New York. I would say a second close
- 1:39Speaker 1: is probably Washington, DC.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Favorite city in Europe definitely Florence North or South uh North.
- 1:48Speaker 4: If you got the last slice of the night at
- 1:51Speaker 4: your favorite spot and accidentally dropped it down on the floor,
- 1:55Speaker 4: top down, would.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You delete it?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Are we on in New York City street? Yes? Am
- 2:01Speaker 2: I inebriated?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yes?
- 2:06Speaker 4: What is eight plus five nine Totaline?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I went to journalism schools. Sometimes I need to I need.
- 2:16Speaker 3: To add, would you ever run a marathon barefoot?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Hell?
- 2:20Speaker 5: No?
- 2:21Speaker 3: What is your dream meal?
- 2:23Speaker 1: I would say I always think about if I would
- 2:25Speaker 1: have one more meal for the rest of my life,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it would be the bucatini at our premium.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'm sitting at the bar in my favorite corner.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Best place to find race day throwaways.
- 2:36Speaker 1: When you're traveling abroad, you could probably go to some
- 2:38Speaker 1: sort of their version of Goodwill, which is a great
- 2:40Speaker 1: place where race day throwaways. But I went to H
- 2:44Speaker 1: and M. But we also found what was the name
- 2:46Speaker 1: of that other place that we went to?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Prime Mark?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Primark? We found Primark. I think our race day throwaways
- 2:52Speaker 2: cost fourteen dollars total.
- 2:55Speaker 3: What's worse a chipped nail or a broken nail?
- 2:57Speaker 2: A broken nail. What is my cat's name, Hadley? I
- 3:03Speaker 2: need it? I needed a minute.
- 3:05Speaker 3: What do you despise the most A pigeon, a rat.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Or a cockroach? Oh?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Probably a cockroach. I feel like I've dealt well. A
- 3:12Speaker 1: rat is very different than a mouse. Let's just disclaim that.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So like I've dealt with many mice in my New
- 3:17Speaker 1: York apartment, but in New York apartment, it's not the
- 3:19Speaker 1: one that I have now, thankfully, But if I was
- 3:22Speaker 1: to have an actual rat in my apartment, I would
- 3:24Speaker 1: lose my shit.
- 3:26Speaker 3: What's your go to race song?
- 3:28Speaker 1: My favorite song to run to is Nice for What
- 3:32Speaker 1: by Drake. It is on my marathon playlist at least
- 3:35Speaker 1: five or six times, and I use it as like
- 3:37Speaker 1: my like Super Mario style power up.
- 3:41Speaker 3: What do you look for in the right pair of jeans?
- 3:44Speaker 1: I need a gene that has stretch because I feel
- 3:47Speaker 1: as though otherwise my waist is typically a little bit
- 3:50Speaker 1: smaller than my thighs, so I need a nice stretch.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'm a big fan of Revtown denim because I feel
- 3:56Speaker 1: like it's got that stretch. And I also love a
- 3:58Speaker 1: pair of ripe jeans, but the rips need to not
- 4:01Speaker 1: like have my legs protruding out of them.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I don't know if you know this, but like, what
- 4:06Speaker 3: was Marilyn Monroe's real name?
- 4:07Speaker 2: Oh my god, Norma Jean.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Can I just tell you that we spent the last
- 4:12Speaker 1: three nights watching part of the movie Blonde and it
- 4:15Speaker 1: was bizarre.
- 4:16Speaker 2: It was bizarre. That's all I got for you.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Can you say one word in French that you learned
- 4:22Speaker 3: this week?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Bo means beautiful?
- 4:26Speaker 3: What's one motto you've taken away this week as well?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Besides yes more bread please?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, more bread please and pon pawn is bread.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I would say that, I'll say the marathon thoughts that
- 4:38Speaker 1: I kept coming back to were come back to calm
- 4:41Speaker 1: and then literally one step, one breath, one thing at
- 4:44Speaker 1: a time. What are you doing after this trip? I'm
- 4:47Speaker 1: flying back to New York on Thursday. I am going
- 4:50Speaker 1: to fly to Chicago on Friday, the day that this
- 4:52Speaker 1: episode comes out, and then I will be popping up
- 4:55Speaker 1: with Tracksmith on Friday night and enjoying a weekend in
- 4:59Speaker 1: Chicago about cheering on all the runners that will be
- 5:02Speaker 1: running the Chicago Marathon.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I need to get deep dish.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I didn't get deep dish the last time I was there,
- 5:07Speaker 1: so that's a high priority.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Last question, how many shoes did you bring on this trip?
- 5:12Speaker 3: And how many were you bring on the next trip?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Wow, okay, I need to bring less shoes on the
- 5:16Speaker 2: next trip.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I brought five pairs of sneakers on this trip, and
- 5:21Speaker 1: one of the pairs of sneakers. I'm embarrassed to say this.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The new Balance ten eighty comes in a lace style
- 5:27Speaker 1: and a slip on style, and I brought both. Cannot
- 5:31Speaker 1: recommend the laceless ten eighty enough. I just wear it
- 5:34Speaker 1: to kick around, but I have been so comfy in it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Five pairs of sneakers. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I also brought boots and brought I brought a pair
- 5:42Speaker 1: of mules and a pair of birkenstops stocks, birkenstocks, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: a pair of slides. I checked my suitcase. I never
- 5:51Speaker 1: checked my suitcase. Who five minutes is up?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Wow? That was like that was a lot. How do you, Ashley?
- 5:57Speaker 2: How do you feel?
- 5:59Speaker 1: I'm very hot right now, I'm sweating. We have burlesque
- 6:04Speaker 1: to go watch. That's five minute Friday for this week.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I hope you guys enjoyed the segment. Maybe we'll have
- 6:09Speaker 1: to have Ash back for a round two. We do
- 6:11Speaker 1: live very close to each other back at home. A
- 6:14Speaker 1: huge thank you to all of you for participating by listening.
- 6:18Speaker 1: It's time for us to get out of here. But
- 6:21Speaker 1: first a listener question.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Hamley, congratulations on London. My question is how do you
- 6:29Speaker 5: stay motivated in between races. I sign up for a race,
- 6:34Speaker 5: I train, I run it, I love it. I tell
- 6:36Speaker 5: myself I'm just going to take a week off, and
- 6:39Speaker 5: that week extends two months and I stop running all together.
- 6:42Speaker 5: And then I say, okay, it's time for my next race,
- 6:45Speaker 5: and it's like starting all over again. So how do
- 6:48Speaker 5: you stay motivated to continue to run in between races?
- 6:53Speaker 5: Thanks so much?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Hello, Hello.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So the first thing that I want to say here
- 6:58Speaker 1: is it's okay to chill for a second, take a beat,
- 7:02Speaker 1: have some downtime. If you are working toward a big goal,
- 7:07Speaker 1: then that is a major commitment and sometimes your body
- 7:12Speaker 1: just needs a minute to have.
- 7:14Speaker 2: That downbeat, have that down time.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Having grace with yourself is extremely important now. Personally, I
- 7:24Speaker 1: am looking forward to setting some goals right now that
- 7:27Speaker 1: have absolutely nothing to do with running. There are some
- 7:31Speaker 1: other areas of my overall wellness snapshot, I will call
- 7:36Speaker 1: it that I have been neglecting. I'm thinking about the
- 7:41Speaker 1: foods that I'm putting into my body. I'm thinking about
- 7:43Speaker 1: the time that I spend doing breathwork, meditating, journaling. And
- 7:47Speaker 1: I'm also really excited to start thinking about strength training
- 7:53Speaker 1: in a reinvigorated light. You'll be hearing more about this
- 7:57Speaker 1: on the show very soon, but I'm about to kick
- 8:01Speaker 1: off once again working with a trainer one on one
- 8:06Speaker 1: using the Future app and so that is something I
- 8:10Speaker 1: am really excited about. When it comes to that waning motivation,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I have been there. I get it, and I know
- 8:17Speaker 1: that frustration point when it feels like you're starting from
- 8:20Speaker 1: square one. I will reiterate the importance of having grace
- 8:24Speaker 1: with yourself. However, my biggest piece of advice to avoid
- 8:29Speaker 1: that post big goal slump is ultimately to set another one.
- 8:35Speaker 2: So do an honest audit.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Sit down and ask yourself, what is it that I
- 8:42Speaker 1: want to focus on right now?
- 8:43Speaker 2: What is something that excites me?
- 8:46Speaker 1: And bonus points if you're shifting the training stimulus. So
- 8:50Speaker 1: if we're going to bring it into the running side
- 8:52Speaker 1: of things, say you just trained for a marathon.
- 8:55Speaker 2: How could it feel for you to.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Instead train to run a fast mile, or perhaps shift
- 9:04Speaker 1: your focus to another area of fitness all together, another modality,
- 9:08Speaker 1: whether that is yoga or string training, working with kettlebells.
- 9:12Speaker 1: The world is your oyster. And then share that goal
- 9:18Speaker 1: with someone. Talk to a friend about it, talk to
- 9:20Speaker 1: a mentor about it. Be open about the things that
- 9:23Speaker 1: excite you, and embrace the opportunity to bring people along
- 9:28Speaker 1: with you on your journey. Who all right, Well, that's
- 9:33Speaker 1: it for now. I hope to see some of you
- 9:36Speaker 1: who may be listening to this this evening in Chicago
- 9:41Speaker 1: and make sure you're falling along with Hurdle on the socials.
- 9:44Speaker 1: That's over at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily Abadi.
- 9:47Speaker 1: A huge resounding thank you again to my friend Ashley.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna hyper up for a second. She just qualified
- 9:55Speaker 1: for the Boston Marathon in her run in London last week.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you, ash and I'm so so
- 10:03Speaker 1: grateful for you. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
