Doctor Alford was born in Mobile Alabama of a military family. His father was a career soldier and aviator in the United States Air Force and was also a decorated war hero in WWII and unfortunately a prisoner of war in Germany. Dr. Alford received his undergraduate degree in 1969 with majors in Mathematics, Physics, Aerodynamics, Biology and Chemistry. He entered the USAF like his father and was trained to be a Jet Pilot, Aircraft Commander and Flight Instructor. He saw service in Viet Nam and was decorated twice with the Distinguished Air Medal.
