- 1:01Speaker 1: the date of the second annual Jack Hobson Memorial Golf Classic,
- 1:05Speaker 1: which is informally known as the Jack. Bengals dot Com
- 1:09Speaker 1: editor Jeff Hobson will join me later on this podcast,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and Jack was his first grandson. Sadly, he passed away
- 1:17Speaker 1: from a heart defect when he was twenty nine days old.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The tournament pays tribute to Jack's memory, and one hundred
- 1:24Speaker 1: percent of the proceeds go to the Children's Heart Foundation,
- 1:28Speaker 1: which funds research to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
- 1:33Speaker 1: of congenital heart defects. So far, the Jack has raised
- 1:38Speaker 1: roughly thirty thousand dollars for a great cause, and it's
- 1:41Speaker 1: not too late to help. If you search for Jack
- 1:45Speaker 1: Hobson Memorial, you'll find a link where you can donate,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and any amount is greatly appreciated to honor the life
- 1:52Speaker 1: of Jack Robert Hobson. Now, let's get to the Bengals schedule.
- 1:58Speaker 1: One of the NFL executives most responsible for putting together
- 2:01Speaker 1: the league's two hundred and seventy two game puzzle is
- 2:04Speaker 1: a Cincinnati guy, Hans Schroeder, the NFL's executive vice president
- 2:09Speaker 1: of media Distribution. Hans grew up in Cincinnati, was an
- 2:14Speaker 1: All state football player at Cincinnati Country Day before going
- 2:18Speaker 1: on to Princeton, and his dad played football at UC.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Here's my conversation with Hans Schroeder. Hans, you will hear
- 2:27Speaker 1: no complaints this year from Bengals fans about Cincinnati having
- 2:31Speaker 1: to play a primetime road game in Baltimore. In fact,
- 2:35Speaker 1: it is the other way around. The Ravens come to
- 2:37Speaker 1: Cincinnati on a Thursday night happens to be New Year's Eve.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Was there an effort to not only avoid Cincinnati having
- 2:45Speaker 1: to play in primetime in Baltimore for the fifth year
- 2:48Speaker 1: in a row, but to turn it around and to
- 2:50Speaker 1: give the Bengals a primetime home game against the Ravens.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yes, for sure, it was one look and not just
- 2:58Speaker 2: something specific to Cincinnat But we look at those trends
- 3:01Speaker 2: dan year to year for all teams, and you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: quite frankly, we went deep into the schedule process last year,
- 3:08Speaker 2: probably in the last twenty four hours where we were
- 3:11Speaker 2: seeing that Thanksgiving night game last year in Cincinnati, and
- 3:16Speaker 2: just something flipped at the very end and when it
- 3:18Speaker 2: was one of those things that just the best ultimate
- 3:21Speaker 2: schedule for all thirty two And I think there were
- 3:23Speaker 2: some things in that schedule last year, even for the Bengals,
- 3:26Speaker 2: were a little bit better meant going back to Baltimore,
- 3:30Speaker 2: but you know, we thought overall the schedule was better.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So going into this year. It was something that we
- 3:35Speaker 2: felt there was a run of being on the road
- 3:37Speaker 2: at Baltimore, trying to balance that up, trying to balance
- 3:41Speaker 2: in the division. And the other thing is we looked
- 3:43Speaker 2: at last year and got a huge number on Thanksgiving
- 3:47Speaker 2: Night for that game, almost twenty eight million viewers, which is,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know, at the top end of the list for
- 3:52Speaker 2: Sunday Night Football and NBC on Thursday that night. So
- 3:55Speaker 2: we loved it. When we started seeing the schedule and
- 3:58Speaker 2: finally seeing it come back where it was going to
- 3:59Speaker 2: be New Year's even Cincinnati in the jungle, we thought
- 4:02Speaker 2: that would be a great, great way to return it
- 4:05Speaker 2: to Cincinnati and have a great way to to to
- 4:09Speaker 2: sort of deepen the year, celebrate New Year's Eve in
- 4:12Speaker 2: the Queen City.
- 4:13Speaker 1: We discussed that Thanksgiving Night game last year. You were
- 4:17Speaker 1: well aware of the fact that Bengals fans were grumbling
- 4:20Speaker 1: a little bit about having to play on a Thursday
- 4:22Speaker 1: night in Baltimore for the third year in a row.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Did you chuckle a little bit when Cincinnati went in
- 4:28Speaker 1: there and won.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Look, in my job now, it's just about rooting for
- 4:33Speaker 2: good games. So we were the thing we were We
- 4:36Speaker 2: were very happy with excited about. Although Flacco played great,
- 4:39Speaker 2: there was a real story with how Flacco was playing
- 4:41Speaker 2: in the interim, but it was fun. I think that
- 4:43Speaker 2: was Burrow's first game back, right, There was questions whether
- 4:46Speaker 2: he's going to play the week before and ended up
- 4:48Speaker 2: being Burrow's week, but you know, first game back, so
- 4:52Speaker 2: we were excited about that. Maybe a little bit of
- 4:54Speaker 2: a chuckle, but we knew, you know, we knew coming
- 4:57Speaker 2: through that you know, there was a time to balance
- 4:59Speaker 2: things up, and it was great that it worked out
- 5:01Speaker 2: this year like it did.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I have a similar question about primetime road games in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the AFC North for the Bengals, because there was a
- 5:09Speaker 1: stretch where they played far more road games than home
- 5:13Speaker 1: games in primetime against their divisional rivals. This year, they've
- 5:16Speaker 1: got two primetime home games against Pittsburgh and Baltimore. They
- 5:20Speaker 1: do not play a primetime road game in the AFC North.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Was that deliberate or is that just evidence of how
- 5:28Speaker 1: these things ultimately even out in the end.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Look, I think we saw that had been on the
- 5:38Speaker 2: road a lot, so it was one of those things,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, I wouldn't say it was quite as strong
- 5:43Speaker 2: as just making sure that Baltimore on a Thursday night.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Too many years in a row, the same game, same
- 5:48Speaker 2: window on a Thursday night, felt like something that was
- 5:51Speaker 2: a little bit more well, let's put our thumb on
- 5:53Speaker 2: the scale and even things up a little bit. But
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know, look they had played more away, so certainly
- 5:59Speaker 2: we liked the idea in big stage with Pittsburgh and
- 6:03Speaker 2: host in Pittsburgh. I'm sure Chris Collinsworth will be excited
- 6:05Speaker 2: that week with a very short commute to work in
- 6:08Speaker 2: his hometown. But look, we think it's a great Monday.
- 6:11Speaker 2: We were really excited about where that Cincinnati Washington game
- 6:15Speaker 2: ended up two years ago. I think when they played
- 6:18Speaker 2: on Monday night too, it was a shootout, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 2: in Cincinnati, so fun game. So look, we definitely thought
- 6:25Speaker 2: it was, you know, a few more divisionals coming back
- 6:28Speaker 2: the other way over time we thought would happen, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 2: But really the Baltimore one is the one that we felt, hey,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, that's really something we need to competitively make
- 6:37Speaker 2: sure flips the other way.
- 6:39Speaker 1: NFL Executive vice president and former Cincinnati and Hans Schroeder
- 6:43Speaker 1: is our guest. The Bengals are heading to Spain to
- 6:46Speaker 1: take on the Atlanta Falcons it'll be their first international
- 6:49Speaker 1: trip since twenty nineteen. Was Cincinnati more or less do
- 6:53Speaker 1: to play an international game or where the Bengals chosen
- 6:56Speaker 1: because of the star power of Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase
- 7:00Speaker 1: right on a.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Stanswor a little bit of both. Right, And you've seen
- 7:04Speaker 2: this year as a new record for US with nine
- 7:08Speaker 2: games internationally. Overall, you know we are as a league
- 7:11Speaker 2: or are spending a lot of time. We have flag
- 7:14Speaker 2: football growing around the world. Flag football is and the
- 7:16Speaker 2: Olympics in twenty eight in La the games growing everywhere.
- 7:20Speaker 2: We're playing in Australia this year for the first time, Paris, Rio,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and so the second year in Madrid. We had a
- 7:26Speaker 2: great first year last year in Madrid and a really
- 7:29Speaker 2: cool real Madrid's home stadium and iconic stadium in Europe,
- 7:33Speaker 2: and so we're trying to elevate the games and we're
- 7:36Speaker 2: trying to build those games. We've seen the viewership grow
- 7:39Speaker 2: last year is up significantly on NFL Network across those
- 7:42Speaker 2: nine thirty windows. So we looked at the falcons and
- 7:45Speaker 2: looked and it's always a puzzle down because you know
- 7:48Speaker 2: there's a certain number of opponents, but some are playing
- 7:51Speaker 2: elsewhere internationally already, so they're not available. You look at
- 7:54Speaker 2: sort of who's in the clubs, can you know, look
- 7:57Speaker 2: at keeping a couple of the teams back as home
- 7:59Speaker 2: games in the States, and so Cincinnati was one of
- 8:01Speaker 2: the clubs that we were really excited about as an
- 8:04Speaker 2: option you know in Atlanta, as we're looking to make
- 8:07Speaker 2: those games bigger, and they hadn't played since nineteen. Those
- 8:10Speaker 2: two things said, you know what, this could be a
- 8:13Speaker 2: really fun way to go to Madrid for the second time.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And it worked out. And certainly, you know, Joe is
- 8:20Speaker 2: one of the you know, more iconic players in the
- 8:23Speaker 2: league right now, both on the field and off quite frankly,
- 8:26Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot that Joe does. It gets
- 8:28Speaker 2: a lot of followings. So we thought the Bengals, but
- 8:31Speaker 2: also with the Falcons, is going to be a great matchup.
- 8:34Speaker 1: In early November, hans I was surprised that the Bengals
- 8:38Speaker 1: don't have a bye after the trip to Madrid. Teams
- 8:42Speaker 1: used to have the option to choose to have a
- 8:45Speaker 1: buy after traveling internationally. Why is that no longer the case?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, I think over time, it's just you know,
- 8:52Speaker 2: our first game in Europe was in London and seven
- 8:55Speaker 2: and we got fifteen plus years into that or roughly
- 8:59Speaker 2: or so. Just the learnings of even with some of
- 9:02Speaker 2: the different cities, there's much more of a routine. We're
- 9:05Speaker 2: much smarter as a league about the accommodations, the practice facilities,
- 9:09Speaker 2: everything that goes into playing in Europe, and then looking
- 9:12Speaker 2: at the practical element. If you're an East Coast team,
- 9:15Speaker 2: it's not that different than going west or certainly Miami
- 9:18Speaker 2: to a Seattle is probably as long as a trip
- 9:20Speaker 2: as you get going to Europe. So you know, as
- 9:24Speaker 2: we looked more into it and thought about it, you know,
- 9:28Speaker 2: more flexibility in the schedule, but then balancing as we're
- 9:31Speaker 2: playing other things, more games and places Thursday nights otherwise,
- 9:34Speaker 2: more flexibility and when that buy hits. I think the
- 9:37Speaker 2: Bengals is in week six if I remember right right,
- 9:41Speaker 2: and then they'll have that mini buy coming off Thursday
- 9:43Speaker 2: going into week eighteen, so you know, coaches look at
- 9:46Speaker 2: that and spaced out. We actually think they'll get a
- 9:48Speaker 2: little bit of the benefit of an earlier by plus
- 9:52Speaker 2: a late Thursday. That's sort of one of the things
- 9:54Speaker 2: we liked about their specific schedule and how that balances out.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But the short answer, we've just seen teams get a
- 10:01Speaker 2: lot smarter we as a league, or a lot better
- 10:03Speaker 2: at planning, and just didn't think we need to force
- 10:06Speaker 2: that buy in either. And we're playing earlier games, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 2: so like if a team's playing in week four this year,
- 10:12Speaker 2: you know, you don't want to have to force them
- 10:13Speaker 2: to their week by and week five either. So just
- 10:16Speaker 2: a lot more flexibility for us to get to the
- 10:18Speaker 2: best schedule, and also knowing that it's it's less of
- 10:21Speaker 2: a you know, we're just better and more efficient about
- 10:23Speaker 2: how we play those games.
- 10:25Speaker 1: The Bengals will be the road team quote unquote road
- 10:28Speaker 1: team for that game against the Falcons. They expect to
- 10:31Speaker 1: host an international game next year. They haven't had to
- 10:34Speaker 1: give up a home game since twenty sixteen. They've got
- 10:36Speaker 1: the extra home game next year. As I noted, you
- 10:40Speaker 1: grew up in Cincinnati, you are very familiar with Cincinnati's
- 10:43Speaker 1: German heritage. It seems to me that Munich would be
- 10:47Speaker 1: a natural. Would that be a consideration for when the
- 10:52Speaker 1: Bengals are hosting an international game?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Look at and certainly you know there's a number of
- 10:59Speaker 2: factors that obviously there's a huge German heritage. I think
- 11:02Speaker 2: at one point there was a data point that the
- 11:05Speaker 2: the Octoberfest in Cincinnati was one of the biggest outside
- 11:08Speaker 2: of the world and outside of Germany or otherwise. But look,
- 11:12Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of considerations. Peter O'Reilly, who
- 11:14Speaker 2: runs our international area, you know, they factor a lot
- 11:19Speaker 2: of those things. Certainly, as you pointed, you know, without
- 11:22Speaker 2: knowing anything as we get deeper into from the you know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: the cycle, and what we did Dan ultimately was when
- 11:30Speaker 2: we went to seventeen games, what we said is a
- 11:33Speaker 2: team has to give up, you know, that seventeenth game
- 11:36Speaker 2: once in the eight years that they'll have it rotating
- 11:39Speaker 2: back and forth between the two conferences. So Cincinnati having
- 11:42Speaker 2: not played it certainly makes it more likely their next
- 11:45Speaker 2: year or in a couple of years. But you know,
- 11:47Speaker 2: that's something Peter will work through with all the teams
- 11:50Speaker 2: when it comes up, what teams are available, what markets,
- 11:53Speaker 2: what markets were going to be in. Certainly, Germany is
- 11:56Speaker 2: a great growth area for US. We had a league
- 11:58Speaker 2: there for a long time, so it'd be fun to
- 12:01Speaker 2: see Cincinnati and Germany. But obviously they need to do
- 12:04Speaker 2: the work to figure out how to sort that out.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And get to that final international schedule next year.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I think the Cincinnati October Fest is the second largest there.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You go, yeah, so yeah, so you're right about that.
- 12:17Speaker 1: The NFL is expanding into Australia and France this year.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Should we expect new international markets next year?
- 12:26Speaker 2: Look at the game's growing, it's going on crazy, you know.
- 12:29Speaker 2: And we talked a little bit earlier just about the
- 12:31Speaker 2: impact of flag. That makes the sport now what we
- 12:34Speaker 2: all played up in our front yards just a ball sport.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So look, we're going to continue to look globally. We
- 12:39Speaker 2: think we're in a great set of markets today with
- 12:42Speaker 2: the UK and Germany and France and Spain, Brazil, Australia.
- 12:46Speaker 2: We're going back to Mexico this year, you know, for
- 12:50Speaker 2: the first time in a while. So look, there's a
- 12:53Speaker 2: lot of interest. Again I'm not as close to exactly
- 12:56Speaker 2: where we are for next year, but I know there's
- 12:58Speaker 2: a lot more interest than even the countries we're in today.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But when we go and Australia is going to be
- 13:03Speaker 2: a great example. Having lived in Sydney for a couple
- 13:05Speaker 2: of years, that MCG the Melbourne Cricket Grounds is an
- 13:09Speaker 2: iconic stadium. I think going back to the fifty six Olympics.
- 13:12Speaker 2: There one hundred thousand people, you know, fills the building.
- 13:16Speaker 2: It's going to be great to see that Rams Niners game,
- 13:19Speaker 2: you know, the second night of the opening weekend. So
- 13:22Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll be in more markets where and how
- 13:24Speaker 2: and if Cincinnati's gone, we'll know a lot more a
- 13:27Speaker 2: year from now.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Certainly, NFL Executive Vice President Hans Schroeder is our guest.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He is a Cincinnati Country Day grad, a member of
- 13:36Speaker 1: the school's athletic Hall of Fame. As a matter of fact,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you referred to Joe Burrow a little bit earlier and
- 13:41Speaker 1: mentioned some of the things that he's done on and
- 13:44Speaker 1: off the field. Took part in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic,
- 13:47Speaker 1: he was in the met Gala for the second year
- 13:49Speaker 1: in a row. He was among the celebs at the
- 13:51Speaker 1: Kentucky Derby. Is there a more marketable player right now
- 13:55Speaker 1: in the NFL than Joe Burrow?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Well, in the Fanatics? I just you know, speaking to
- 14:02Speaker 2: I'm sure Cincinnati held their breath on that long run
- 14:05Speaker 2: he had when he's diving and trying to get into
- 14:07Speaker 2: the end zone, was probably a little bit moment of
- 14:09Speaker 2: pause and and back back in Cincinnati. But look, Joe's
- 14:15Speaker 2: one of our biggest stars. You know, we're lucky. We
- 14:17Speaker 2: have a lot of stars. There's a lot of great quarterbacks,
- 14:20Speaker 2: there's a lot of great players, but certainly Joe's up
- 14:23Speaker 2: there amongst the top of that list. And you know,
- 14:28Speaker 2: I actually got the pleasure to meet him briefly at
- 14:31Speaker 2: Super Bowl this year at a at a lunch out
- 14:33Speaker 2: in the Bay Area, just briefly. And wonderful guy. But
- 14:37Speaker 2: what an ambassador for the sport. I mean, somebody that
- 14:39Speaker 2: lives and breathes it by all accounts, seems like a
- 14:42Speaker 2: leader in all the right ways. And just his passion
- 14:45Speaker 2: for the sport and what you read and hear about
- 14:48Speaker 2: with his dedication, and it's remarkable. So you know, yes,
- 14:53Speaker 2: he's one of our biggest stars. And I couldn't think
- 14:55Speaker 2: of a you know, better star as far as just
- 14:58Speaker 2: all the role modeling he does for kids and future
- 15:01Speaker 2: fans and international fans and otherwise, just a real credit
- 15:05Speaker 2: to Joe and what the type of person he is.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Sports Business Journal recently reported that Cincinnati holds the inside
- 15:15Speaker 1: track to host the twenty twenty nine NFL Draft. What
- 15:20Speaker 1: does a city have to demonstrate to earn that opportunity.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You know, the Draft's an incredible thing and it's been
- 15:28Speaker 2: a joy. You know, one of the fun parts of
- 15:30Speaker 2: my career was got to you know, ask by the
- 15:34Speaker 2: commissioner back in twenty fourteen or so, I think roughly
- 15:38Speaker 2: to sort of we couldn't go back to Radio City
- 15:40Speaker 2: Music Hall where we had had the draft here, and
- 15:43Speaker 2: should we think about it going on the road, And
- 15:45Speaker 2: worked all across the building and came up with this
- 15:47Speaker 2: idea to go to Chicago, and all of a sudden
- 15:50Speaker 2: to see all the fans turn out in the Midwest
- 15:53Speaker 2: for Chicago, and then to see now fast forward a
- 15:56Speaker 2: decade plus later to see that visual up in Pittsburgh River.
- 16:00Speaker 2: You know, it's just incredible. And so what I love
- 16:04Speaker 2: about it is, you know, the Super Bowls tend to
- 16:06Speaker 2: have a rotation more to a limited set of places
- 16:08Speaker 2: than otherwise, but the Draft has been something we've been
- 16:11Speaker 2: able to take to Cleveland or at Green Bay or
- 16:13Speaker 2: Kansas City, and so to me, it's it's the tempole
- 16:18Speaker 2: of the off season. Certainly, it's become an event in
- 16:21Speaker 2: and of itself, almost like anything else in sports, with
- 16:24Speaker 2: the number of people that turn out over multiple days. So, Look,
- 16:28Speaker 2: I I'm not close to that process, but certainly haven't
- 16:32Speaker 2: been from the city and grown up in the city.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I think it would be an incredible host for the
- 16:36Speaker 2: event when and if that happens, and you know, to
- 16:39Speaker 2: see the visuals of what that would look like down
- 16:41Speaker 2: there on the banks, in and around the stadium and
- 16:44Speaker 2: what Cincinnati's like in late April, would would be just
- 16:48Speaker 2: a rival Pittsburgh and the other places we've been recently.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I think they would. They would put on a phenomenal draft,
- 16:54Speaker 2: But there's a lot of competition out, a lot of
- 16:56Speaker 2: interest in different cities. You want it so but I
- 16:59Speaker 2: think they'd be a great host win and if.
- 17:01Speaker 1: It happens, only the visuals of this year's Super Bowl
- 17:04Speaker 1: parade will be better. That's all I have to say.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I've asked you a bunch of Cincinnati related questions so far,
- 17:11Speaker 1: But big picture, what were the biggest challenges that you
- 17:14Speaker 1: faced in putting together this incredible two hundred and seventy
- 17:17Speaker 1: two game puzzle this year for the NFL schedule.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Look, there's always some things that are new. The international
- 17:25Speaker 2: aspects were one of them. Were playing on some fun
- 17:27Speaker 2: new windows like Thanksgiving Eve. Those were fun ways to
- 17:31Speaker 2: tackle and try to solve it. But you know, one
- 17:33Speaker 2: of the things that was unique. Everybody thinks a lot
- 17:37Speaker 2: of fans think that we make up the matchups or
- 17:39Speaker 2: who plays who. It's all formulaic. You know, our scheduling process,
- 17:42Speaker 2: which is really year round but kicks off the minute
- 17:45Speaker 2: Sunday Night football ends on week eighteen. We know every
- 17:49Speaker 2: team that's playing, every team. And this year what's really
- 17:52Speaker 2: interesting is the Western divisions are so good, the NFC
- 17:56Speaker 2: West and the AFC West. He got Vegas and Arizona
- 18:00Speaker 2: building back up, but you've got three really strong teams
- 18:03Speaker 2: on top of that in each division with the Broncos, Chargers,
- 18:07Speaker 2: Chiefs and then the Seattle Rams Diners, with great rivalries
- 18:11Speaker 2: amongst those teams. But then those two divisions actually play
- 18:14Speaker 2: each other this year, so you got all these other
- 18:16Speaker 2: you got San Francisco Chargers, you got Denver San Francisco
- 18:19Speaker 2: in a double header. You've got Kansas City playing Seattle.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So because of how strong all those West Coast teams are,
- 18:27Speaker 2: and you know the great rivalries that trying to figure
- 18:30Speaker 2: out how to get a home for all those games,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and you'll see a couple of weeks when you look
- 18:34Speaker 2: at the schedule and you'll see some great double header
- 18:36Speaker 2: games at four to twenty five, but then see a
- 18:39Speaker 2: great West Coast game behind it. There are just so
- 18:41Speaker 2: many good games that I think this year they'll even
- 18:43Speaker 2: be maybe a stronger set of games at four o'clock
- 18:46Speaker 2: than we've had in a while, just because the depth
- 18:49Speaker 2: of those great matchups with West Coast teams. It's a
- 18:51Speaker 2: challenge but also a fun, fun one to tackle.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Ans I mentioned your Cincinnati roots. You've got a picture
- 18:58Speaker 1: of your dad over your shoulders in your office. He
- 19:01Speaker 1: is a former Bearcat. Do you still have family in
- 19:03Speaker 1: Cincinnati and do you get back to town.
- 19:07Speaker 2: We get back a couple of times. Yes. My nephew,
- 19:09Speaker 2: also Hans Schroeder, lives in Cincinnati, has been there for
- 19:14Speaker 2: a few years. And then my aunt and uncle who
- 19:17Speaker 2: are also Cincinnati. My uncle's a Cincinnati native, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 2: both live still in town and my cousins are spread out.
- 19:25Speaker 2: But we get back and try to get back out
- 19:28Speaker 2: a couple of times a year still to get some
- 19:32Speaker 2: skyline and some greaters, maybe a Reds game and a
- 19:35Speaker 2: Bengals game if possible too. So we love going home.
- 19:39Speaker 2: It's still you know where I grew up and spent
- 19:41Speaker 2: you know, most of my early early life in a
- 19:44Speaker 2: special place to me, and it's always really special going
- 19:47Speaker 2: back and going home.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Hins. I appreciate your time. This is always a lot
- 19:51Speaker 1: of fun for me. Thanks so much, and I look
- 19:53Speaker 1: forward to visiting again down the road.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Thanks Dan, anytime.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Up next my chat with Bengals dot Com editor Jeff Hobson.
- 20:01Speaker 1: But first a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast

- 20:19Speaker 1: best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is the
- 20:22Speaker 1: official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time to swap
- 20:26Speaker 1: opinions about this year's schedule with Jeff Hobson, which when
- 20:30Speaker 1: I took my first look at the schedule, two things
- 20:33Speaker 1: immediately stood out. Number one, a primetime home game on
- 20:37Speaker 1: a Thursday night against Baltimore at last, which I fully expected,
- 20:42Speaker 1: quite honestly after four straight primetime road games against the Ravens.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And then number two, No bye week after traveling to Madrid.
- 20:50Speaker 1: It's going to be about an eight hour flight, so
- 20:52Speaker 1: that'll be interesting the next week. But let's start with
- 20:55Speaker 1: the Baltimore primetime game at home on New Year's Eve
- 20:58Speaker 1: where you, like me, did you did you expect almost
- 21:01Speaker 1: to make good and the Bengals to get a primetime
- 21:04Speaker 1: home game against Baltimore?
- 21:06Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:06Speaker 4: I did, but now they got to go four more
- 21:08Speaker 4: straight years there to make to make good on.
- 21:10Speaker 3: What they did before.
- 21:12Speaker 4: But I guess I didn't expect it to be in December,
- 21:16Speaker 4: which is good. That's a good thing. And you know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: the next to last game of the year. I mean,
- 21:21Speaker 4: that's that's huge. I mean, so I think they did
- 21:24Speaker 4: get a break there because you know, they're not Thursday
- 21:27Speaker 4: night at home in October. You know, I mean this game.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I know they say every game, you know, means the same.
- 21:34Speaker 4: The game in September means as much as December. But
- 21:37Speaker 4: not when you're eight and six and fighting for the flag.
- 21:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:42Speaker 1: As for the lack of a bye after traveling to Madrid,
- 21:46Speaker 1: is that this year's big complaint from the Bengals perspective.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Well, I talked to one, you know, talk to a
- 21:53Speaker 4: couple of guys and you know, I mean Orlando Brown
- 21:57Speaker 4: felt that he liked nearly buy in the sense because
- 22:02Speaker 4: he thinks they're a good team this year and that
- 22:04Speaker 4: they're going to be rolling. And if you roll, and
- 22:07Speaker 4: if you're on a roll and you get stopped in November,
- 22:10Speaker 4: you know, now you got to get.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Back into the now.
- 22:12Speaker 4: You get to get get to get back into the
- 22:15Speaker 4: get back into the swing.
- 22:16Speaker 3: You know. So I think they're in what week six
- 22:20Speaker 3: hoardy to buy. I think it's an early buy.
- 22:22Speaker 1: It's after the fifth game, correct.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Right, and it's uh, you know, I think uh, Orlando's
- 22:28Speaker 4: point is that by then you got an identity.
- 22:32Speaker 3: You know, you take you take a break, and then
- 22:35Speaker 3: you make you.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Make your let you know, you make your last push
- 22:37Speaker 4: there and you're really you know, and at that point
- 22:40Speaker 4: you're gelling and you don't you know, you don't hit Thanksgiving.
- 22:43Speaker 4: I think what they did last year, right, they they
- 22:45Speaker 4: kind of hit they hit the bye at Thanksgiving. I'm
- 22:48Speaker 4: not sure, you know, I think they I think it
- 22:50Speaker 4: was after the Thursday night game, right, and I think
- 22:52Speaker 4: they felt a little I think anyway thereby I think
- 22:57Speaker 4: some of the guys thought, you know, they had tried
- 22:59Speaker 4: to get something together and you know, late in November,
- 23:03Speaker 4: that's tough to do.
- 23:05Speaker 1: So I gave you the two things that really caught
- 23:07Speaker 1: my eye, the primetime home game against Baltimore the lack
- 23:10Speaker 1: of a bye after traveling to Madrid. What if anything
- 23:13Speaker 1: caught your eye as soon as you've scanned this year's schedule.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Seven straight one pm games, I think the stat the
- 23:21Speaker 4: season that was something you haven't We haven't seen in
- 23:26Speaker 4: the burrough Ara that much except in twenty twenty, I
- 23:28Speaker 4: think probably, And which is interesting. You know, it's the
- 23:36Speaker 4: people around the team.
- 23:38Speaker 3: I'm talking about the players and the coaches. They love that.
- 23:41Speaker 4: I mean that that gets them into a groove. And
- 23:43Speaker 4: you know, I think they're kind of going back to
- 23:45Speaker 4: what Orlando was talking about.
- 23:47Speaker 3: So that hit my eye too.
- 23:49Speaker 4: And also, you know, that's a December, that's a that's
- 23:54Speaker 4: a tough gig. I know some people having various opinions
- 23:58Speaker 4: about what their toughest stretches. I just think that's a
- 24:02Speaker 4: that that that last month of the season, you know,
- 24:05Speaker 4: that's no matter whether it's home or away. You know, uh,
- 24:10Speaker 4: you got you got, you got my homes, you got
- 24:12Speaker 4: Lamia Jackson, you know Uh, I just I just think
- 24:17Speaker 4: that's uh, you know, you get Caroline as a division winner.
- 24:21Speaker 4: You know, that's a tough place. You know, that's a
- 24:22Speaker 4: tough plate in the last month of the season.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You mentioned the seventh straight one o'clock games to begin
- 24:28Speaker 1: the schedule. That takes them up to the Madrid game
- 24:32Speaker 1: that's November eighth. So they do not play a game,
- 24:35Speaker 1: assuming they don't get flexed. Uh, they do not play
- 24:39Speaker 1: a game later than one o'clock until the eighth of November.
- 24:43Speaker 1: That's crazy to me.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that, Uh, you know, it's it's I
- 24:49Speaker 4: think it also shows too.
- 24:50Speaker 3: It's the byproduct of you.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Know, if you have a losing season, you know that,
- 24:54Speaker 4: you know, the national windows kind of tighten up on
- 24:56Speaker 4: you a little bit.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Now they still get pretty good.
- 24:58Speaker 4: They still got they still you know, they're with Burrow,
- 25:01Speaker 4: They're always going to have exposure, you know.
- 25:03Speaker 3: And I don't know how you count that. That Madrid game.
- 25:05Speaker 4: To me, that's a national game, because that's a that's
- 25:08Speaker 4: a I mean, I don't know who's up to watch it,
- 25:10Speaker 4: but who's but whose ever's up is going to be
- 25:12Speaker 4: watching it, you know, And so to me, that's a
- 25:15Speaker 4: that's a even though it's far from prime time, it
- 25:19Speaker 4: certainly feels like a national window game.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. That's a high profile game, even though
- 25:24Speaker 1: it starts at nine thirty in the morning Eastern time.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 4: And do we always have to play Kansas City at
- 25:30Speaker 4: fourth twenty five? So I guess that must mean it's
- 25:32Speaker 4: going to end.
- 25:32Speaker 3: On a field goal.
- 25:34Speaker 4: It's going to be a walk off the field goal
- 25:36Speaker 4: that starts at four twenty five.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Hopefully it ends with a game winning walk off field
- 25:41Speaker 1: goal as opposed to a fourth and sixteen penalty late
- 25:44Speaker 1: in the game that leads to a Kansas City game
- 25:47Speaker 1: winning walkoff field goal.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Yeah, especially at that at that time of the year,
- 25:52Speaker 4: you know that that conjures up memories. It's almost the
- 25:54Speaker 4: same week that of the Travis Kelcey game when the
- 25:58Speaker 4: Chiefs are going down to put the game away and
- 26:01Speaker 4: Jermaine Pratton had that great strip and fumble recovery at midfield.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Chris Evans was the hero of the game. Chris Chris Evans,
- 26:09Speaker 3: who was.
- 26:12Speaker 4: You know, coming off the bench put him ahead, and
- 26:16Speaker 4: you know Joseph O'sai got the sack. Harrison Bucker was
- 26:20Speaker 4: back father than he wanted to be and missed the
- 26:23Speaker 4: field goal and.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Debate. The thing I remember about that game.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Sorry to digress, but that was they didn't need a
- 26:29Speaker 4: field goal to win it, but a great third and
- 26:31Speaker 4: eleven play by t Higgins to salt it away with
- 26:34Speaker 4: seventy two seconds left. So you know, it's probably going
- 26:38Speaker 4: to come down to that something like that. And I
- 26:42Speaker 4: guess what will I guess Taylor Swift.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Might be here, right, so possible? Sure, right right?
- 26:50Speaker 4: The two He's just saying, you know, Travis is a
- 26:53Speaker 4: Ohio guy, went to school here.
- 26:56Speaker 1: It's then speculated that the Skyline Chili Crosstown shootout could
- 27:01Speaker 1: be the day before. I have not seen a date
- 27:05Speaker 1: for that. I don't know if that's the case, but
- 27:08Speaker 1: if that's the case, that might increase the likelihood or
- 27:12Speaker 1: possibility that the world's biggest pop star would be here.
- 27:16Speaker 1: She could conceivably take in the shootout with her future
- 27:19Speaker 1: hobby and then watch the Bengals in Chiefs the next day.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Whatdy, what are you going to do for your What
- 27:26Speaker 3: about your vocal cords?
- 27:27Speaker 1: There's gonna be some My vocal cords are much more
- 27:30Speaker 1: resilient than my right shoulder as it turns out, my
- 27:33Speaker 1: voice will be fine.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess, hey, you don't want your voice and
- 27:38Speaker 3: swing nets.
- 27:38Speaker 1: For sure, my voice will be fine. I will hydrate,
- 27:41Speaker 1: that's for sure. It's been such a big theme but
- 27:44Speaker 1: in recent years about the Bengals trying to get off
- 27:47Speaker 1: to a fast start, and they managed to do it
- 27:49Speaker 1: last year before Joe got hurt. A couple of years ago,
- 27:53Speaker 1: we looked at the schedule on release day and three
- 27:56Speaker 1: of the first four games were against teams that were
- 27:59Speaker 1: coming up terrible seasons. We all said, well, the worst
- 28:02Speaker 1: the Bengals will be after four weeks is three and one.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Turned out they were one in three last year. The
- 28:07Speaker 1: first two games of the year were against teams coming
- 28:10Speaker 1: off terrible years, Cleveland and Jacksonville. They won those two games,
- 28:13Speaker 1: then Joe got hurt. They wound up being two and
- 28:16Speaker 1: two after four. I look at the first four games
- 28:18Speaker 1: this year. The Bengals only have four games all year
- 28:22Speaker 1: against teams that won ten or more games last year.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Three of those four games are in the first four
- 28:27Speaker 1: weeks Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, and Houston. The other games the opener
- 28:31Speaker 1: against Tampa Bay. That's certainly not easy. That was an
- 28:33Speaker 1: eight to nine team a year ago. What do you
- 28:36Speaker 1: think of that first four to begin this season in
- 28:40Speaker 1: light of the ongoing Bengals theme of trying to get
- 28:43Speaker 1: off to a fast start.
- 28:45Speaker 4: It's always tough when you face Houston. Okay, I kind
- 28:48Speaker 4: of trying to look up my matchups. You know, Houston
- 28:50Speaker 4: is a nightmare defensively. But this is the best Bengals
- 28:55Speaker 4: offensive line they've had under Zach. It's the most consistent
- 28:59Speaker 4: offensive line they've had under Zach. So second game of
- 29:02Speaker 4: the year, these guys are, you know, they're intact. They're
- 29:05Speaker 4: ready to go Pittsburgh. I think is uh. I think
- 29:10Speaker 4: they catch Pittsburgh at a good time. I think the
- 29:13Speaker 4: Steelers offensive line is UH is being revamped. The left
- 29:18Speaker 4: tackle UH, Roderick Jones is coming off as surgery. The
- 29:22Speaker 4: left guard went left via free agency. They're talking about
- 29:27Speaker 4: maybe putting the right tackle in there, the rookie, the
- 29:29Speaker 4: rookie they have no shot to get his name right,
- 29:32Speaker 4: but the rookie right right.
- 29:35Speaker 5: Tack back with a long last name, right Max, not
- 29:39Speaker 5: Max Stacks, but another new guy, Max with long name
- 29:43Speaker 5: and UH, to talk about putting him in, you know,
- 29:46Speaker 5: plugging in the right tackle.
- 29:47Speaker 4: You know, so hopefully they're not going to have this
- 29:49Speaker 4: figured out. It's good time to catch them and Dexter
- 29:51Speaker 4: and his guys can put the feet in the ground
- 29:53Speaker 4: right away, you know. So I mean those two matchups,
- 29:57Speaker 4: if I had seen him before, Dexter, before this offensive
- 30:00Speaker 4: line had been you know, had come coming back off
- 30:03Speaker 4: such a good year, you know, I feel I feel
- 30:07Speaker 4: better about it, you know, those those two matches, and
- 30:10Speaker 4: I think they you know, uh, the opener, nobody knows
- 30:13Speaker 4: what you know, know, nobody knows what's going to happen
- 30:16Speaker 4: in an opener, so that you just kind of you
- 30:18Speaker 4: have to look at the next couple. I think, and
- 30:21Speaker 4: I think Houston and Pittsburgh those are you know, those
- 30:23Speaker 4: are tough gigs. But I think with the way the
- 30:25Speaker 4: Bengals are built, you know, I think, you know, I
- 30:28Speaker 4: think they I think they have good shots in both games.
- 30:30Speaker 1: The toughest three game stretch for me begins with the
- 30:33Speaker 1: Madrid game against Atlanta. So you've got that, you fly
- 30:38Speaker 1: home eight or more hours, then you play on Sunday
- 30:41Speaker 1: Night football it isn't home against the Steelers. Then the
- 30:44Speaker 1: next week Monday Night Football against Washington. Is that the
- 30:49Speaker 1: toughest three game stretch in your view, or is something
- 30:52Speaker 1: else even more difficult than that?
- 30:55Speaker 3: I think the last two games at home.
- 30:57Speaker 4: I mean, I think the last three games of a schedule,
- 31:00Speaker 4: I I are.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Tough to me that is they're at Indy. I think
- 31:04Speaker 3: I think the last.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Four games at Carolina at Indy and Baltimore and Cleveland.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Now to me, not at day, to me, not at
- 31:12Speaker 4: day at the beach. You have an interesting I mean,
- 31:14Speaker 4: I think that's it. That's also difficult stretch. That's why
- 31:17Speaker 4: when you say, well it's the third easiest schedule, well,
- 31:21Speaker 4: how do you shuffle the deck or whatever?
- 31:22Speaker 3: You know? So, uh, they do get a bread, they
- 31:25Speaker 3: do get a break.
- 31:26Speaker 4: They don't get it by they get you know, they
- 31:28Speaker 4: don't get a Monday night game after Madrid. They get
- 31:31Speaker 4: I guess a Sunday night game. So that's a little
- 31:33Speaker 4: bit of a break. They've had a pretty good success
- 31:35Speaker 4: against Pittsburgh in prime time here you know flac oh,
- 31:40Speaker 4: we all remember that. I guess that's the one that's
- 31:42Speaker 4: sticking in our brains. The that's the thank you, thank
- 31:45Speaker 4: you Cleveland game. And I you know, I the thing
- 31:49Speaker 4: about uh, you know Washington there. I mean, I'm not
- 31:54Speaker 4: sure Washington is the Washington two years ago either, you know,
- 31:58Speaker 4: I think they're different, but.
- 32:00Speaker 1: They're probably not the Washington of last year either, at
- 32:03Speaker 1: won five games. It's probably somewhere in between.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Yeah, you know right, And that that's why I think,
- 32:09Speaker 4: to me, the uh, I'm gonna stick with my I'm
- 32:13Speaker 4: gonna stick with December being the toughest because you know,
- 32:19Speaker 4: really Madrid, you know, going to Madrid and then going
- 32:22Speaker 4: to Washington such question marks.
- 32:25Speaker 3: You know, I think that's you know, how are they
- 32:27Speaker 3: going to react going over there? They have?
- 32:30Speaker 4: None of these guys have but really I don't think
- 32:31Speaker 4: any of the I mean not even Orlando Brown has
- 32:34Speaker 4: played an international game. To me, that's interesting to me
- 32:36Speaker 4: is how these guys are going to bounce back from that,
- 32:39Speaker 4: because you know, the last time they played over there,
- 32:42Speaker 4: nobody's left from that team.
- 32:44Speaker 3: That was twenty nineteen. You know, Jacks been there.
- 32:47Speaker 4: This is Zak's fourth international trip. He knows how to
- 32:49Speaker 4: handle it. But like they were even talking about it
- 32:52Speaker 4: today a little bit in the locker room, like you know,
- 32:55Speaker 4: it's that's it's pretty much spam. You know, they you know,
- 32:59Speaker 4: they're gonna have to take crash course a little bit
- 33:01Speaker 4: in Spanish, because that's you know, that's what they're that's
- 33:05Speaker 4: I guess. You know they've talked to some of the
- 33:06Speaker 4: guys have gone over to Spain. Great trip, great city,
- 33:10Speaker 4: and uh just you know, I guess bone up on
- 33:15Speaker 4: your Spanish, which which would which would make sense?
- 33:20Speaker 1: Let me end with this thought. You reference the Bengals
- 33:22Speaker 1: having the third easiest schedule on paper that is based
- 33:26Speaker 1: on Vegas preseason win loss projections. But no matter what
- 33:32Speaker 1: metric you use, no matter what chart you use, the
- 33:35Speaker 1: Bengals come up as one of the easiest schedules in
- 33:37Speaker 1: the NFL going into the season. Then I look at
- 33:40Speaker 1: this schedule and to me, it looks difficult. And I
- 33:44Speaker 1: say it for this reason. I don't see any stretches,
- 33:48Speaker 1: Like even the teams that you expect to be weak
- 33:51Speaker 1: seem to be sandwiched between tough games. So for example,
- 33:55Speaker 1: Tennessee had the worst record last year of anybody. They
- 33:59Speaker 1: play three fourteen. It's a home game. So if there's
- 34:02Speaker 1: a game on the schedule that you say, well that's
- 34:04Speaker 1: a win, that would be it, Well, it comes in
- 34:08Speaker 1: between a road game at Baltimore and the Madrid game.
- 34:12Speaker 1: So I don't really see a stretch on this schedule
- 34:16Speaker 1: where I'm like, Okay, they're going to run together four
- 34:19Speaker 1: Street wins during that period. It seems like the NFL
- 34:22Speaker 1: has done a good job of kind of sticking the
- 34:25Speaker 1: easiest looking games in the middle of some hard ones.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but that road game in Baltimore's in the day,
- 34:32Speaker 4: so they can win down there in the day.
- 34:34Speaker 3: So right when it's someone when the sunshine. The last
- 34:37Speaker 3: time they were there in the sunshine, they put up
- 34:41Speaker 3: forty one on them, I think so. But no, really,
- 34:44Speaker 3: I mean I I that's right.
- 34:46Speaker 4: That's why I look to me when I looked at
- 34:48Speaker 4: the first thing that because usually I've looked at him
- 34:51Speaker 4: the last couple of years and I've said, you know,
- 34:53Speaker 4: they got a pretty good December, you know, a lot
- 34:56Speaker 4: of you know, you got usually three home games, you know,
- 35:00Speaker 4: And but I looked at it this trip and I'm thinking, wow,
- 35:02Speaker 4: you know that India at Carolina, Kansas City at home,
- 35:06Speaker 4: you know, and it's uh, you know, it's you know,
- 35:11Speaker 4: and both you know, Baltimore and Cleveland and whatever easy
- 35:13Speaker 4: no matter where you play, you know, I mean, you
- 35:14Speaker 4: can never you know, everybody says.
- 35:16Speaker 3: We're in Cleveland this Cleveland.
- 35:17Speaker 4: That yeah, but they're in the you know, I hate
- 35:19Speaker 4: to use a cliche, but you know every division game
- 35:22Speaker 4: is is tight because they know each other so well.
- 35:25Speaker 3: So you get you know, two of those thrown in.
- 35:27Speaker 4: There with you know, Carolina or in Indian Uh, I
- 35:31Speaker 4: don't know, you know, I mean, you know, it's it's
- 35:34Speaker 4: to me, it's the most daunting December I've seen. I
- 35:37Speaker 4: mean a couple you know, I think maybe, uh maybe
- 35:40Speaker 4: in this decade, maybe.
- 35:42Speaker 1: We shall see. It's certainly fun when we have it
- 35:45Speaker 1: on paper and begin trying to figure out, all right,
- 35:48Speaker 1: what's that going to look like. We've got that now
