Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Cycle of Development in Nature and the Focus of Attention
Transcript
- 0:01We observe everywhere that nature has a development cycle,
- 0:05with focus of attention on what needs to take place at each
- 0:08stage of that cycle, rather than simply jumping ahead to an end
- 0:13result of the development. Thus we see that plants undergo
- 0:18a stage of sprouting from seed, and the first focus is on
- 0:22putting out a root system in leaves, then stems and trunks
- 0:26more leaves and eventually they come to a stage of flowering and
- 0:31bearing a fruit, which then leads to a new seed generation
- 0:36and repeat of the cycle. In human beings we can observe
- 0:42that after the child is born, nature puts the initial primary
- 0:47attention on the growth of the physical body.
- 0:50As the child grows, there comes about development of the vital
- 0:54powers of the being, and eventually a stage is reached
- 0:58where primary attention is placed on the mental
- 1:02development. Some educators indeed have
- 1:05posited that there are specific time frames in the development
- 1:09cycle within which each of these levels obtains the primary
- 1:14focus. Rudolf Steiner and Maria
- 1:17Montessori created plans of education around these stages.
- 1:22Ancient Indian teachings held that there were specific time
- 1:26frames within the scope of human life within which the being
- 1:31should focus on various aspects of development.
- 1:35These stages, known as ashramas, counseled the individual to
- 1:41attend to the major aspects of human development within an
- 1:45orderly sequence. We can consider that a
- 1:49Caterpillar focuses its attention almost entirely on
- 1:53eating leaves of plants. At a certain stage, it spins A
- 1:58cocoon and embeds itself therein.
- 2:02Eventually it emerges as a butterfly.
- 2:06Just as the Caterpillar cannot focus its attention on flying as
- 2:11a butterfly, so the child, the young adult, the individual in
- 2:16the prime of life, cannot be expected to focus on or even
- 2:21conceive of in most cases, a further stage that involves new
- 2:26spiritual understanding and expression of powers and modes
- 2:30of being that represent the development of the flower of
- 2:34human existence, the emergence of the soul.
- 2:39When the time comes, the mature individual naturally turns his
- 2:44attention to the soul and the significance of his life.
- 2:48This is a natural cycle of development.
- 2:51Until that time, the existence of the soul is considered to be
- 2:55a mystery, and its influence is primarily a pressure of ongoing
- 3:00development of the physical, vital, emotional and mental
- 3:05aspects of the life to prepare for the ultimate emergence of
- 3:10the soul in a fully awake, prepared and competent human
- 3:15existence, Sri Aurobindo observes, Quote.
- 3:22If the psychic entity had been from the beginning unveiled and
- 3:26known to its ministers, not a secluded king in a screened
- 3:30chamber, the human evolution would have been a rapid soul,
- 3:34outflowering not the difficult, checkered and disfigured
- 3:38development it now is. But the veil is thick, and we
- 3:43know not the secret light within us, the light in the hidden
- 3:47crypt of the heart's innermost sanctuary.
- 3:51Intimations rise to our surface from the psyche, but our mind
- 3:55does not detect their source. It takes them for its own
- 4:00activities, because before even they come to the surface, they
- 4:05are clothed in mental substance, thus ignorant of their
- 4:09authority. It follows or does not follow
- 4:12them according to its bent or turn at the moment.
- 4:16If the mind obeys the urge of the vital ego, then there is
- 4:20little chance of the psyche at all controlling the nature or
- 4:25manifesting in it something of its secret spiritual stuff and
- 4:28native movement. Or if the mind is overconfident
- 4:33to act in its own smaller light, attached to its own judgement,
- 4:37will, and action of knowledge, then also the soul will remain
- 4:42veiled and quiescent and wait for the mind's farther
- 4:46evolution. For the psychic part within is
- 4:50there to support the natural evolution.
- 4:53And the first natural evolution must be the development of body,
- 4:57life, and mind successively. And these must act each in its
- 5:02own kind, or together in their I'll assorted partnership, in
- 5:07order to grow and have experience and evolve.
- 5:13The soul gathers the essence of all our mental vital and bodily
- 5:17experience, and assimilates it for the farther evolution of our
- 5:21existence in nature. But this action is a cult, and
- 5:26not obtruded on the surface. In the early material and vital
- 5:31stages of the evolution of being, there is indeed no
- 5:35consciousness of soul. There are psychic activities,
- 5:40but the instrumentation, the form of these activities, are
- 5:45vital and physical or mental. When the mind is active, for
- 5:50even the mind, so long as it is primitive or is developed but
- 5:55still too external, does not recognize their deeper
- 5:59character. It is easy to regard ourselves
- 6:03as physical beings or beings of life, or mental beings using
- 6:08life and body, and to ignore the existence of the soul
- 6:12altogether. For the only definite idea that
- 6:16we have of the soul is of something that survives death of
- 6:20our bodies. But what this is, we do not
- 6:24know, because even if we are conscious sometimes of its
- 6:28presence, we are not normally conscious of its distinct
- 6:32reality, nor do we feel clearly it's direct action in our
- 6:37nature. End Quote Reference Sri
