- 1:27The program aired four weeks after the prior episode, so from May twenty
- 1:34first, nineteen forty six. Here now is the case of the Poker Murders.
- 1:52What's the matter? What is It's a case for Nick Carter, my
- 1:53study tetch you. Yes, it's the case of the Poker Murders. Another
- 2:05case for that most famous of all man hunters, a detective whose ability at
- 2:07solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter, Master
- 2:13Detective. Even the waterfront section of the city there lies a condemned slum area.
- 2:29The streets dark and deserted, lined with empty, crumbling tenements. Deep
- 2:34in a grimy tenement, deep within, a masked man sits in a hidden
- 2:38room and plays solitaire. This is the sinister master of crime known as the
- 2:44Ace of State. Yes, A, six and seven are close to see
- 2:53Ace. Send the man now you yi? Yeah, you're five minutes late.
- 3:00I'm sorry he used the cups in watching this area. We have trouble
- 3:04slipping in since when of I accepted excuses? Yeh, we know? What
- 3:07about the other three? Are they waiting at the rendezvous? Yes, you
- 3:12both memorized my instructions. We got it down cold, Chief. But suppose
- 3:15it's a hitch. There won't be a hitch. The Ace of Spades doesn't
- 3:20make mistakes. Of course, if you make one, oh we won't.
- 3:27All right, are you too? It? Better get going? One thing?
- 3:31What is it? Chief? Don't forget to leave your calling cards.
- 3:36I don't want to disappoint my dear friend, Sergeant Mathison. The Spade SUT's
- 3:50a game. First story to our house quarter hundred dollars and first loaded.
- 3:54Good kill. This pocket gang makes clean get away. Hey is it mister
- 4:06Ralph Williams? Here? See you? Ralph Williams, special investigator for ask
- 4:11me underwriters. Oh show him in Patsy by the retainer they're paying me.
- 4:15I see him. That's why mister Williams was the card of my company's in
- 4:17trouble. Yes, sit down, mister Williams, tell me about it,
- 4:20as you'll know where the biggest underwriters in the business. With this fur storage
- 4:25robbery yesterday, we can't take any more of those. Oh the Ace of
- 4:30Spades, Uh, yes, whoever he is, He's hit us five times
- 4:33in the last two weeks. We're paying out a fortune and claims you're working
- 4:36with the police on this. The police, they're helpless. The Ace of
- 4:42Spades has been too smart for them. Take that fur warehouse job last night,
- 4:46for instance. Yes, every burglar alarm was cut, disconnected, The
- 4:49vault combinations were known beforehand, and the locations of the most valuable furs.
- 4:55What about the guard. Is he one of your own operators? Yes,
- 4:58one of our best men too. They locked him into one of the refrigerated
- 5:01vaults. The Ace of Spades men leave the usual calling cards. Yes,
- 5:06it was a five man job. Apparently they left the six, seven,
- 5:11eight, nine, and ten of clubs a straight flush. It's a pretty
- 5:15high Programand while those other accomplishments, our friend seems to have a perverted sense
- 5:18of humor. What's a brand of humor? I can't say, I relish
- 5:23it's a color. Will you help us with the case. I will carling
- 5:27the truth, mister Williams. I was just about to drop down and discuss
- 5:30it with my old friend, Sergeant Matheson in the homicide division. You see,
- 5:32the gentleman who calls himself the Ace of Spades interests me and I'm looking
- 5:36forward to meeting him personally. A black Yes, put her on eight.
- 6:02I got to see you. I thought I told you don't never to come
- 6:05down here. I've just heard some news. Car I know he's been called
- 6:10in by actme underwriters. How did you know? I make it my business
- 6:14to know everything, my dear, But a CK card is clever, dangerous.
- 6:17Yes, I know it will be intriguing to match wits within now than
- 6:23my day. You'd better run along. You work to do tonight. Aren't
- 6:27you going to see me. I'm sorry, but I'm busy. I know
- 6:30you're playing Solitaire. Sometimes I think you love that game more than you love
- 6:34me. Come come, my dear, there's no basis for comparison. Solitaire,
- 6:39like every other card game, is relaxing women when they're as lovely as
- 6:45you are, exciting as Please good night, my dear Nick. You will
- 6:59be Paroda Stanley's birthday party, were you? Oh, Patsy, you drop
- 7:02me to headquarters and go right out. I'll join you later. Uh huh.
- 7:05It's funny the way I bumped into Oda after all these years, hadn't
- 7:09seen her since college, and then all of a sudden I was standing in
- 7:12a nylonline of trembles, and there she was. Yes, so now we're
- 7:15going to a birthday party? Uh huh. The minute she found out I
- 7:18worked with you, she insisted on our coming. She's dying to meet you,
- 7:23and well, I promise to produce you. Sure you don't mind me?
- 7:27No, no, of course not, Patsy. Oh, it ought
- 7:30to be something. She's married to John Stanley the banker. Ah, that's
- 7:33right, which is the same thing as saying she's married to ten million dollars.
- 7:39And I was the girl in my graduating class voted most likely to succeed.
- 7:44Oh, Patsy's a funny thing. What's funny? Fanley's bank? The
- 7:47Marine Trust is putting up the capital to ted down that slum area where the
- 7:50Ace of Spage is supposed to be hiding. Oh do you really think that's
- 7:54where the Ace of Stages hidhout is could be. There are more than two
- 7:57hundred abandon tenements now there. Patrolman murdered in that section seemed to point to
- 8:01it. I won't forget those two homicides in a hurry. Each of them
- 8:05had a playing card pinned right over the bullet holes. It's a pair of
- 8:09jacks. Fair sample of the Ace's grizzly humor. What kind of a man
- 8:15can he be? Anyway? Infernally clever, Betsy, we know that much.
- 8:18A brilliant planner with a mind that doesn't overlook the minutest details might trap
- 8:22him. Why are those poker hands? Whenever he's pulled a job? He's
- 8:24an egotist. Have a criminal glorifies and his crimes and enjoys leaving his signatures
- 8:28and each one of them? Oh this close enough, Nick, Yes,
- 8:33I can work together halfclock to headquarters. Nick, I, please be careful,
- 8:37don't take any chances. Oh, don't worry. The Ace of Spades
- 8:41may play his cards according to Hoyle, but I'll play him any way I
- 8:46can to win. Hi, Mandy, Eh, Nick, I tell you
- 9:00the truth for once. I'm glad to see you. This Aces Spades has
- 9:03really got me on the Murray ground. First he knocks over two of our
- 9:07best cops. Then he kills this watchman on that warehouse job last night,
- 9:11and he leaves nothing, no evidence except those blasted playing cards. Yes I
- 9:16know, Nick, I tell you this Aces Spades is like a ghost.
- 9:18This whole case like a nightmare. Mad either got the cards as men left.
- 9:24Yeah, get a common pattern. I selve hundreds of dicks like this
- 9:30all over town. What about the fingerprints? Yeah no none. We powdered
- 9:35every card, even used the iodine test. Nothing doing. I suppose you
- 9:37searched that abandoned slum area. Look are you kidding? Nick? Of course
- 9:41we did the night Berk and Fittigan were killed. We went through it with
- 9:45a fine tooth comb, a devil of a job. It was too as
- 9:48I can imagine, and as much that place has been blacked out ever since
- 9:52the city decided to dismantle their street labs in the area, had to save
- 9:54electricity. Yeah, with all these hundreds of empty tenements, these could change
- 9:58his head as it will. You could drive a car through the da where
- 10:01the head lights turned off, never be seen. Yeah. No, that's
- 10:05what makes it tough. The places as black as well, the Asius spades.
- 10:11I got a couple of men down there now nosing around, Not that
- 10:13I expect to find anything. Homicide. Sergeant Madison caught it from a car
- 10:20box. Done. Yeah, yeah, I'll talk to him. Oh hello,
- 10:28is that you, Sage? Yeah? What is it? Nolan O'Connor's
- 10:31and myself saw a light in one of these aier tenements. Are you sure?
- 10:35Yeah? Positive? The light's pawn now, but we've got the glace
- 10:37spotted. Shall we go in and investigation? No? No, now,
- 10:39now listen, Knowlan, you and Connors stay there and keep your eyes peel
- 10:43on that tenement. I'll be right down with a squad. Okay, s
- 10:46They'll be on the corner. Know it, know it? You say that
- 11:01call box is located at the corner of sixteenth Street and Avenue ap Many.
- 11:05Yeah, that's right, Nick. A couple more blocks and we'll be there.
- 11:07And the looks of things, you must have every cruise car on the
- 11:09force in this area now, But judging by what's going before, I don't
- 11:13think it's gonna do us any good. Maddy. Just look at this area,
- 11:16not of it. Rows and rows of dark tenements and boarded up store.
- 11:20Yeah, there isn't a whole pane of glass in the place. The
- 11:22streets and the sidewalks are certainly littered with this point. Hey, Nick,
- 11:26I heard one of your boys up here, just blue a tire picked up
- 11:31a piece of broken glass. Partly oh oh yeah, yeah, Oh,
- 11:35this place gives me the creeps, I guess. Oh, there's the call
- 11:39box that Nolan called from. I don't see anything you many, No,
- 11:46Nolan and Connors must be somewhere around one way or the other. They have
- 11:56the walls. Many. Now we're out in the open like a couple of
- 12:01sitting pigeons. Theys Maddie. Here in this doorway. Nolan and Connor's dead,
- 12:11Yes, riddled by bullets. Look, Mattie. The Ace left his
- 12:16usual calling cards, a Jack of Hearts and Nolan and the Jack of Diamonds
- 12:20on Connor's and Burke and Finnegan drew a pair of jacks two when they were
- 12:24murdered down here, or jacks or of a kind. Well, whatever,
- 12:31the ace of spades is matting, he's consistent. He's still killing. And
- 12:35according to Hoyle Bethy, what's happened to the matter is detective, you promise
- 12:50to produce tonight. Well, I can't understand what's keeping nekrota. He was
- 12:52supposed to be here long ago. Well, we won't worry about it.
- 12:56Let's just have another cocktail. Huh. After all, it is my birthday,
- 13:01as you know, Patsy, I'm lucky woman to be missus John Stanley.
- 13:03Look at the birthday present. John gave me this necklace. Oh I've
- 13:07been noticing that road match diamonds. It's a magnificent thing. Oh that must
- 13:13be Nick. Now I'll get it. What's the devil? All right?
- 13:18Stanley? Get those hands up? Yeah fast? You know what a minute?
- 13:20What does this mean? We're playing cops and robbers. That's why we're
- 13:22wearing these masks? Shut up, Stanley? How do well? They're talking
- 13:26around here? All right, Joe, you get to work on that wall.
- 13:28Save it's behind that picture. You know the combination, right, John,
- 13:31know my jewelry is in there. No, my dear, I'm afraid
- 13:35there's nothing we can do now or any other time. Pretty sure of yourself,
- 13:39aren't you? Yeah, lady, I sure am. How you doing,
- 13:43Joe? Okay, just got the safe bolk? Swell now, missus
- 13:46Stanley. I'll take that necklace, oh John, my birthday president. You
- 13:50give it to me, and do I have to tear it off your neck?
- 13:52Rude? I'm afraid you don't have to do as he says. No,
- 13:54No, I won't roa to your husband's right. We're helpless now.
- 13:58They're not going to take my neck, right, lady, looks like I'll
- 14:01have to rip it off that pretty white neck. Take your hand off,
- 14:05my wife? How up? Fairly say what you are along here? Take
- 14:07your hand job? Job. Yeah, they had a chance to use that
- 14:13black jack in a long time. You'll kill him. He is a breezing
- 14:18naturally, Lady. There was no love tap I gave him. You got
- 14:22all that stuff out of save Joe. Everything's worked like clockwork, as the
- 14:26chief would say, according to plans. You'll pay for this, both of
- 14:30you. That's what you think, lady. Oh, here's a couple of
- 14:35calling colls just to remember us by, So they left the Ace of Hearts
- 14:52and the Ace of Clubs Y, Yes, Nick, and both of them
- 14:54then were masked. We couldn't tell who they were they John killed him.
- 15:00Did you try to predict him? Now, Rhoda, don't try to talk.
- 15:03You've had a terrible shock. Just lie back on the couch and try
- 15:07to rest. The doctor will be here soon, John, John, I'm
- 15:11sorry, missus Stanley, but someday you'll have the satisfaction of seeing those killers
- 15:16go to the chair. Nick, one of those crooks said, everything went
- 15:18according to plan. Do you think the Ace of Spades planning John's murder?
- 15:22Yes, Patsy, I do, but it was so wanton. Whenever the
- 15:26Ace of Spades kills, he kills for a reason. He isn't the type
- 15:28to kill just for the pleasure of it. Now, Patsy, did you
- 15:31notice anything about these stubs, anything unusual that might give us a clue.
- 15:35No, they were both masked about medium hike wore black gloves. Wait a
- 15:41minute, Nte, Yes, I do remember something now. When the man
- 15:43who hit John with the black jack raised his arm, I saw his cufflinks,
- 15:46and what about them? They were little black aces of clubs. Unusual?
- 15:52Did they look expensive? Oh? Yes, very and not the usual
- 15:56kind of thing you pick up in a Jebbilry store. Probably made to order.
- 16:00That's your magnificence, I am nick. You are. You've stumbled on
- 16:03something we've badly needed on this case. A good lead. Now we're going
- 16:07to play a little game, a little game, a little game of poker.
- 16:21Mind if I use your phone, Sergeant Mathieson, I know, mister
- 16:23will sergeants my company is demanding action from you. Went mister Carter here,
- 16:29Yes, now wait a minute, mister william Ley. We can't wait for
- 16:32anything much longer. You realize the loss attack me and the writers are taking.
- 16:36Oh well, Bulevard Garage. This is mister Williams. It's my car.
- 16:40Ready? What two new tires? I see? The old ones are
- 16:45pretty badly cut up? Eh, but that makes three new tires and all
- 16:51mm hmm, all right, go ahead. I suppose it can't be helped
- 16:56car traveler. Yes, but that's the least of my worries. Mid My
- 17:00firms ensured the Stanley jewels along with that diamond necklace for almost one hundred thousand
- 17:04dollars. Unless you nail down the Ace of Spades pretty quickly. Well,
- 17:08might as well try to nail down a ghost. Well, do what we
- 17:11can, mister Williams. I've got a lead on them now, I think
- 17:14not lead. Well, I'd rather not say until I am sure to be
- 17:17of value. Very well. I don't care how you get the Ace of
- 17:21Spades, as long as you get him and soon. Good day, gentlemen.
- 17:26Hey, Nick, what's this lead you're talking about. I'll let you
- 17:29know marry when and if it pays dividends. Oh, by the way,
- 17:33I wint homicide sjan mathieson there. Oh yeah, sure, Patsy, heh.
- 17:40Nicke's for you, Patsy. Do you find anything? Planny? I
- 17:44can miss the big jewelry store, just as you told me to do.
- 17:45And after walking my feet off and talking to about one hundred supercilious jewelry clerks,
- 17:49I finally made a strike at relatives. They make up those couplnks.
- 17:52Yes, did have a carbon of the sailes slip, Yes, Nick,
- 17:56they did. The man who wandered those couplints was Frankie Morella. Ah real
- 18:00well, good work, Patsy. Go home now, so get eating hot
- 18:03water. I'll let you know what I need you again? Yes, a
- 18:19club says here to see you? Send him in? Hello, Chief?
- 18:25You sent for me? Yes, Frankie, sit down, gay well Chief?
- 18:30How'd you like the way Joe and me pulled off at stanleych other?
- 18:33That's an interesting pair of conflicts. You're wearing, Frankie, little aces of
- 18:38clubs? Eh? Pretty neat if I do say so? Had him made
- 18:42daughter? That was very careless of you, Frankie. Hey, what do
- 18:48you mean by that? You wore them on a Stanley job? You gave
- 18:49Nick Cotter a clue. You'll find out who you are sooner or later.
- 18:52Have a chief as a dangerous man with a clue, Frankie. Now he
- 18:56hopes to get at me through you. It's going to be embarrassing to have
- 19:03you around the chief, for I didn't wear these couplings at the Stanleys that
- 19:06square. I didn't, didn't you, Frankie? No, No, you're
- 19:07gonna believe me. Yesh, send in the Queen of hearts? Right?
- 19:12What meets the Queen of hearts? Frankie? You? Yes, Frankie,
- 19:19it's I sorry, Thanky Chief? No nostra stra funny of Frankie Morrell found
- 19:37on Molly Country Roads, the Spray Thinker, Copter Caangster, Extra Red Fine
- 19:53Stated Affairs, Nick, Frankie Morella. Our only clue wiped out. So
- 19:59you and I you about that couplings clue? Nick, what is this Ace
- 20:02of Spades a mind reader? Let's see you forget? When you and I
- 20:04were discussing it at John Stanley's house, someone else was there who could have
- 20:08overhurt us. Oh, Nick, you're not suggesting that. Rhoda. She
- 20:11was in the room with us when we talked it over. Well, I
- 20:14know, but she was in a severe state of shock. Why she,
- 20:17Nick, you don't mean, I mean that things are beginning to add a
- 20:18look, Betsy, as Crooks knew where the wall safe was even at the
- 20:22combination. Yes, that's right. The Ace of Spades could have received that
- 20:26valuable information direct from Rhodo. Yes, but we can't be sure of that,
- 20:30Nick. But there's one thing we can be sure of. Neither you
- 20:33nor I tipped off the Ace of Spades about that Coupling's clue. And somebody
- 20:37did, and the Ace Fella was important enough to force him to destroy the
- 20:40evidence his own henchman. It must have been Rhoda who tipped him off,
- 20:44she was the only other person who knew about the couplings exactly what. I
- 20:48can't believe it? What well I Nen wrote to Stanley, Well, of
- 20:53course I haven't seen him for oh, Nick conquered Rhoda being accomplice of the
- 20:59murder of a husband before her own eyes. At say, those jewels and
- 21:02the safe were insured for one hundred thousand dollars. That's a lot of money,
- 21:06not to mention the millions that John Stanley probably left her in his will.
- 21:08But if Road is mixed up in this, then who is the ace
- 21:12of spades? Well hunts, but I'm not positive yet whoever he is,
- 21:15he has an intimate knowledge of the jobs he tackles, and all these jobs
- 21:19have been pulled off against ACNE underwriters. Has he supposed someone had easy access
- 21:25to the files of the company files? Yes, on banks, burds,
- 21:29first storage vaults and other properties giving their floor layouts, burglar alarm set ups,
- 21:33and so forth. A clever crook could pull off a nice clean job
- 21:36with his information, couldn't he? Yes, But there might be any number
- 21:40of men who'd have access to this information. Adjusters, executives, insurance actuaries,
- 21:45any number of people on the inside. True, But we can now
- 21:48are down further. This man, this ace of spades, would not only
- 21:52have to be an inside man. You'd have to be someone who got a
- 21:53round on the outside. Tool knew all these places by actual experience, because
- 21:57he'd visited them. You want to wake or operate the wa he's doing.
- 22:00Wait a minute, Nick, you mean I'm not sure, Betsy, and
- 22:04I hope to know within an hour. Come on, get you out.
- 22:07Let's go go go where for the bull of our garage? That's where Ralph
- 22:11Williams keeps his car. Nick, that garage attendant looked a little suspicious when
- 22:27you told him you were a dealer and that mister Williams sent you down to
- 22:30make an estimate on his car. I'm gonna make an estimate, all right.
- 22:33Anyway, Nick, you still haven't told me why you're interested in mister
- 22:37William's car. Not interested in the car itself. Because the tires. The
- 22:41tires, Yes, I understand, three of the tires were cut up so
- 22:47badly. I had to have new ones. I think I know what cut
- 22:49his tires. By the way, I want to be sure I hurry up
- 22:53that I had attendant is keeping his eye on us, Betsy have found I've
- 23:00been looking for. Nick. I just don't get it. Here. Take
- 23:02a good look at all four of these tires. See the glass particles in
- 23:04the treads. There's old tires, two of them. Yes, but what
- 23:08do they mean? I mean that mister Williams has been driving this car over
- 23:11roads littered with broken glass. And the only place in town whether a roads
- 23:15like that, is in the abandoned slum section. And Nick, what you're
- 23:18saying is that Ralph Williams is the Ace of Spades. Yes, and I
- 23:25bet every poker chip in the part of it investigation william speaking, Oh Claims
- 23:41Department. Oh yes, mister Redden funny, I was just talking to missus
- 23:45Stanley. She's right here in my office now. No, we haven't been
- 23:51able to break that Stanley case. The Ace of Spades got clean away with
- 23:53those jewels. Huh. I know it's a lot of money, but we'll
- 24:00lad and we'll have to pay the claim. Yes, I know, and
- 24:03you're perfectly right. But even Nick Carter's falling down on this one, alright,
- 24:08mister Rudden, goodbye, Well, my dear, it looks as though
- 24:15you're in They're going to okay, the claim. When what does it come
- 24:18through the cash? I mean sometime next week. And after that, my
- 24:22dear, I suggest you go away for a long vacation trip. In fact,
- 24:27I think i'll join you myself. It's uh getting pretty warm in town.
- 24:33Yes, come in and that thing your brother is lady for you,
- 24:37mister Williams. Oh, thank you, Miss Hamilton. MM from Nick Carter,
- 24:44Nick Carter, I wonder what he wants, No, my dear,
- 24:47nothing to be nervous about it. Let's see there there's nothing in it but
- 24:53a plane card. Yes, but look at that card. It's the joker.
- 25:11Nick. The messenger left William's office five minutes ago. I know it's
- 25:15almost dark. He'll be off soon. What he does, Patsy, we'll
- 25:19tail him, Nick, Why did you just send him that joker? Just
- 25:22having a little fun in the ace's own way? Isn't it dangerous? Shouldn't
- 25:26we have just gone up and got him? But if he gets away,
- 25:30he won't You forget one thing, Patsy, what the loot? The ace
- 25:33is almost half a million dollars sell other ways away him, and he's certainly
- 25:37not gonna be a town without picking it up. That's the big reason why
- 25:41he send him the joker? You know he's around with him now. It'll
- 25:44flush him out, of course, and he'll lead us right to the hideaway
- 25:48if everything goes according to Hoyle, Nick, do you think it's one of
- 25:51those slum tenements somewhere? I better' can't think of a better place to hide
- 25:55anything. Get way? Yes, here comes to Williams out of his building.
- 26:00Now he isn't rude. Stanley's with him. They're getting into a taxi.
- 26:07All right, Bessy, here we go, Nick. Look they've stopped
- 26:22at the Riverview boat house. Yes, they're getting into a launch. But
- 26:25I don't understand this means they're not going to the tenement area. In the
- 26:29contrary, Betsy, you forgot one thing. The river fronts that area,
- 26:33and the boat running quietly with its lights out might get in a lot easier
- 26:37than a car, especially when all the streets are being watched. We can't
- 26:41let them get away, Nick, What now I'm going on to the tenement
- 26:44area? You get married in the phone? Uh huh? I have him
- 26:47throw a cordon around this entire area and tell him to notify the Harbor police.
- 26:49Tool All right, Nick, I fancy make it plain to Marry that
- 26:52the harbor police are not to stop the boat. I just keep them on
- 26:55a civilians. We want the ace to pick up that money before he tries
- 26:59a final get away. Well, Nick, it worked out just as you
- 27:10figured. Asius Spades came off that boat went into that five story tenement right
- 27:14across the street. Then, yes, lucky young men were posted under those
- 27:17docks, Marry, otherwise we might have missed him. Oh, a Stanley
- 27:21woman's waiting in the boat. We can pick her up later. Just as
- 27:22soon as we, Nick, the Asius Spades is coming out. Get back
- 27:27in the doorway. He went in empty handed and came out with a suitcase.
- 27:33Yeah, that's the swag, all right. Up he goes gust them
- 27:37in a d ice. What no got that gun? Go my sight?
- 27:42Nice shut Mary wing them in the arm. Yes, sir, you trumped
- 27:47the as of Spades, and neatly I'll nick this to tear down these tenements
- 28:00today. Oh at a place, even in daylight, it gives me the
- 28:04creeps. Yes, for some day they tell me this is going to be
- 28:07a beautiful housing development with parks and playgrounds for the kids. Maybe, but
- 28:11right now it looks like a kind of Dead House. And speaking of the
- 28:17Dead House, I wonder what the Ace of Spades is thinking about now about
- 28:22black on red or red on black. Look, what on earth do you
- 28:26mean? I just spoked to Mattie on the phone a few moments ago.
- 28:29He tells me the Ace of Spade sits in the death cell all day and
- 28:32all night, playing solitad. Say, Nick, how about giving us a
- 28:45few of the ingredients that make up your story for next week? Why sure?
- 28:48You take a beautiful young girl who's positive she's going crazy, just as
- 28:52her mother did before her. Then add her boyfriend who refused to believe she
- 28:56was losing her mind in spite of the evidence of the contrary, make them
- 29:00together, and had a country doctor who alone knew the secret behind it all.
- 29:03And you have the tense and unbelievable situation with which Nick was faced.
- 29:07And what do you call this witches brew? Nick? I call it the
- 29:11Case of the Demented Daughter Nick Carter, Master Detective, which is produced and
- 29:32directed by Jock McGregor, is copyrighted by Street and Smith's Publications Incorporated. Pictured
- 29:37stories of Nick Carter appear in every issue of the Shadow Comics. In the
- 29:41broadcast of Nick Carter Master Detective. Long Clark has starred as Nick. Charlotte
- 29:47Manson has featured as Petty. Matthew is played by a Latimer. Original music
- 29:51is played by George Wright. Script is by Max Earlick. Any resemblance in
- 29:56these programs to actual persons living or dead, or to actual places as hilly
- 30:00Coincidental. Nick Carter Master Detective is presented over most of these Mutual stations each
- 30:04week at the same time. This is you Sanders saying so long until next
- 30:10week. This program was heard in Canada through the facilities of the Canadian Broadcasting
- 30:27Corporation. This is the Mutual Broadcasting System Welcome back. While this once again
- 30:45does capture a lot of the early pulp fiction style of early Nick Carter's opposed
- 30:52to the more traditional detective stories that we heard with Edith Miser for the show,
- 31:00and it was definitely this is one that really does go by the concept
- 31:07and really it's a great concept and I think it made for a solid adventure.
- 31:14Well, now we turn to some listener comments and feedback and we start
- 31:18with Wes who said Nick Carter was among the first radio detectives to have a
- 31:23catchphrase, quiet Patsy that I've heard every episode. I don't enjoy them nearly
- 31:30as much as Philip Warlow and Johnny Dowler. The character of Nick Carter is
- 31:34just written to be too perfectly competent to be believed, and the synophatic way
- 31:40that Passy and others regard him as nauseating. Well, I can appreciate your
- 31:45opinion, and I will say that I don't really like the way that latter
- 31:51scripts have treated Patsy. I think that the early scripts from nineteen forty three
- 31:57really presented her as a much more appealing character who you know, obviously wasn't
- 32:04Nick Carter, but was brave and generally the person to ham on an adventure.
- 32:09And some ways it feels like in these more recent versions that Patsy kind
- 32:15of furs to try and get the audience as scared as she is. Regarding
- 32:22the general attitude to Nick Carter, it's something really that does come from the
- 32:27pulse, and it comes from the fact that in terms of overall fictional stories
- 32:35told, there were nine hundred print stories about Nick Carter told before the radio
- 32:40show ever started. I mean, this is a guy who, working through
- 32:45all the criminals he caught, takes him a whole day to update his files,
- 32:52and I'll only get from A to C. Still, that can be
- 32:54a challenge for listeners who like a little bit of humility and the fact that
- 33:01most of us just did not grow up on Nick Carter stories. Some listeners
- 33:07had some comments regarding episode thirteen sixty two, The Eight Records of Death.
- 33:13Michael says, this is an interesting glance at technologies of those days. I
- 33:17had no realized you could cut records in the privacy of your own home.
- 33:22Well, not everybody could. The first really big product that you could do
- 33:31that with was an RCA Radiola, which retailed for two hundred and eighty five
- 33:37dollars, which was around four thousand dollars today. The RECORDO was a lot
- 33:45from will Cox Gray in the nineteen forties. That kind of improved that it
- 33:52was believable with eight Records of Death, because we were dealing with a fairly
- 33:55wealthy woman for home. Two hundred and eighty five dollars for radio, I
- 34:01wouldn't be a big deal. An amateur recording has been dealt with with the
- 34:05Golden Age of radio. Usually it's dealing not with people recording in their homes,
- 34:12but recording at another location like a penny arcade and there actually have been
- 34:16at the very least episodes of Pat Novak for hire. And also I was
- 34:22a communist for the FBI that used that arcade recording method. And then there's
- 34:30a comment Joel says, the eight Records of Death is a fantastic program.
- 34:35It would make a fantastic movie. Thank you for your great podcast. Well,
- 34:38thanks so much. I don't know how it would work in the visual
- 34:43medium. You really need some good face actors to sell it. Of course,
- 34:49you might cut the length of the records in some way, add a
- 34:52little bit of parallel. I don't know. Maybe you'd be a modern one.
- 34:57You could modernize too, the eight MP freeze of Death. That doesn't
- 35:01sound quite right. And finally, the way they'll have an email for from
- 35:07Cameron who says, Hi, Adam, maybe you're already aware of it.
- 35:12By the name Nick Carter was also the name of a famous bloodhound dog born
- 35:17in nineteen hundred in Kentucky who tranks fugitives and apparently is credited with over six
- 35:24hundred fines leading to arrest. Just thought you'd find that interesting, and he
- 35:30did link to the article on dog names. Woof dot com blog from two
- 35:37thousand and seven and yeah, a Kentucky bloodhound named Nick Carter. And again
- 35:45this does go back to the earlier comment about the way that Nick Carter is
- 35:51treated, probably around the turn of the century when this dog was named Nick
- 35:55Carter been out less than twenty years and was huge and really was probably the
- 36:02first of the popular great American fictional detective, even though he's not as well
- 36:10remembered as Sherlock Holmes. And the fact that he's not somebody who is remembered
- 36:16and as he was back then, I think is part of the problem when
- 36:22it comes to the to the constant praise of Nick Carter, because you know,
- 36:30back in nineteen hundred they think they have a pretty good bloodhound and what
- 36:37better name for it than Nick Carter. Though, to be fair, even
- 36:40if you were taking Sherlock Holmes and Neal Wolf went out a problem if the
- 36:49police were universally revering them to the level that Nick Carter is. But it
- 36:54mostly just comes back to the books, without which when't have the radio series
- 37:00to start with. Well, that will do it for today. Join us
- 37:02back here next Friday for Friday for your Sholey Johnny Dollar. Next Thursday,
- 37:07We'll be back with Next Carter and coming next Tuesday, Easy Money. We
- 37:14don't want to miss that one. In the meantime. Sendor comments to Box
