Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So Haling Clark heading back this morning as the government
- 0:03Speaker 1: goes after Eden Park's restrictions. Only six artists are allowed
- 0:06Speaker 1: to play a total of twelve shows a year there,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and only on certain days. You've got a curfew on weeknights.
- 0:13Speaker 1: These are two thousand. I didn't realize this until yesterday.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Two thousand max capacity for conferences there. Consultation on changes
- 0:20Speaker 1: getting underway. Vivbek, Heart of the City CEO with us
- 0:23Speaker 1: this morning. Viv, good morning, Good morning. How ridiculous are
- 0:27Speaker 1: these rules?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Well, what I can say is that this is all
- 0:31Speaker 2: about driving economic growth and I think the idea of
- 0:35Speaker 2: actually testing this to enable more concerts wherever they might be.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But it's about the size and the scale. If we're
- 0:43Speaker 2: going to benchmark ourselves with Brisbane they had forty five,
- 0:47Speaker 2: I think as I understand that their Economic Development Agency
- 0:50Speaker 2: supported more than forty five events, I think it might
- 0:54Speaker 2: have been twenty four that generated two hundred million economic
- 0:58Speaker 2: activity and bought two hundred thousand people to the city.
- 1:01Speaker 2: So you know, we're talking about unlocking the ability to
- 1:04Speaker 2: really utilize major events as a big economic driver.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Do we have the same infrastructure and capacity though as Brisbane.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Has well you know, Eden Park is clearly the largest
- 1:16Speaker 2: stadium in the country, and we've got others coming on
- 1:18Speaker 2: stream but not as big. So it's you know, we're
- 1:21Speaker 2: going to have to do something that's fit for purpose here.
- 1:24Speaker 2: But I think the idea of having a look at
- 1:26Speaker 2: these rules to see what's possible is important. And you know,
- 1:31Speaker 2: the factor is that these are the opportunities we've been
- 1:34Speaker 2: asking for. We're looking for a long term, sustainable pipeline
- 1:38Speaker 2: of events with sustainable funding. Now that's not what's here.
- 1:42Speaker 2: We've got some immediate money, which is terrific to drive things.
- 1:47Speaker 2: From our perspective, coming out of a decade of major
- 1:50Speaker 2: construction and disruption, this is the sort of thing that
- 1:53Speaker 2: can actually start to get things moving.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you think they're going to do because
- 1:57Speaker 1: they've announced this one off money for the major events?
- 1:59Speaker 1: What are you think they're going to do it because
- 2:01Speaker 1: they're talking or they want a pipeline that they need
- 2:03Speaker 1: to stuff going forward? Is that? Do you reckon that
- 2:06Speaker 1: they're going to I reckon the nets are going to
- 2:08Speaker 1: go to the election with a bed tax. What do
- 2:09Speaker 1: you reckon?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Well, there's going to have to be something, and they've
- 2:13Speaker 2: pushed back I understand if they pushed back on it
- 2:15Speaker 2: because there was well, they're not going to do it
- 2:17Speaker 2: this term. There's quite a lot of support for it
- 2:21Speaker 2: to be national rather than regional. Obviously there's a big
- 2:24Speaker 2: push here to get something locally to get things moving,
- 2:28Speaker 2: but I think what we do need is to see
- 2:30Speaker 2: what's going to come beyond that. There has to be
- 2:32Speaker 2: something If we're going to be in this space, we're
- 2:35Speaker 2: going to have to have a sustainable funding model. So
- 2:38Speaker 2: this is really an interim step. I think it's been
- 2:40Speaker 2: really well received from our perspective. If you look at
- 2:42Speaker 2: something like a Pink you know, we had a day
- 2:45Speaker 2: of six and a half million dollars of spend. You know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: those sort of concerts make a massive difference, and that's
- 2:51Speaker 2: really what we want to unlock here. And I think,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, having a lock at these rules to see
- 2:55Speaker 2: what is possible to really start to grow and make
- 2:58Speaker 2: sure we're in it for the long time, that's going
- 3:01Speaker 2: to be key because we have to have the artists
- 3:03Speaker 2: wanting to come here. It has to be, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: something that's viable. But there's certainly a big opportunity from
- 3:09Speaker 2: an economic perspective.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Everyone talks about Pink. I mean it was a great concert,
- 3:13Speaker 1: wasn't that. There's no doubt, no denying that.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I appreciate your time this morning, vivid Heart of the
