1:35
[SPEAKER_03]: He's the guy you call when your project needs a little more chaos, a little more weird.
1:40
[SPEAKER_03]: Someone to blow up stuff without checking if the insurance even covers it.
1:44
[SPEAKER_03]: He's one of the co-creators of Workaholics, the Stonerbroke Comedy Central hit that managed to be both
1:51
[SPEAKER_03]: juvenile and incredibly self-aware.
1:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Kyle also directed over half the episode, which means he's responsible for a lot of these shows most loriously unhinged moments.
2:03
[SPEAKER_03]: And since then, he's kept busy behind the camera directing everything from episodes of what we do in the shadows and murdervill to the Netflix action comedy Game Over Man, which is exactly what you'd expect if you handed a die hard blueprint to three guys raised on Mountain Dew and Jack S.
2:21
[SPEAKER_03]: He also directed Murder Mystery in twenty nineteen that's Adam Sandler in Jennifer Aniston and it's because of that movie a lot of the reason why now he's back directing and working with Adam Sandler once again and talking today about taking on the legacy of Happy Gilmore two the long-awaited sequel thirty years in the works actually
2:47
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to unpack the challenge of balancing throwback nostalgia with a more modern comedic style.
2:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Also explaining why pure comedy is so rare these days.
2:56
[SPEAKER_03]: We hear about working with Adam Sandler, how golf became his newfound obsession and the joy of directing original happy Gilmore Helmer, Dennis Dugan.
3:06
[SPEAKER_03]: Plus, surprise MVP turns from Jason Kelsey, Bad Bunny, and Post-Arest, Scotty Sheffler.
3:13
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's get into this.
3:14
[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking happy Gilmore II.
3:16
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Kyle Nuichek.
3:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Kyle.
3:20
[SPEAKER_03]: How you doing, man?
3:22
[SPEAKER_03]: Is it weird to address somebody with your same name?
3:25
[SPEAKER_03]: Because it's not like the most popular name, but it's like a tinge of weirdness to it or something.
3:30
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
3:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, it's like, ah, you too, huh?
3:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because it is, it's not, it's semi rare.
3:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I would say it's, it's like, um, yeah, that's a little rare.
3:40
[SPEAKER_01]: But no, I just, I just, I just, good name, buddy.
3:43
[SPEAKER_03]: Good, Nate, welcome to the club.
3:45
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome.
3:45
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you've been here for a while.
3:50
[SPEAKER_03]: There's, there's what, uh, one time a year where it's like a dozen of my friends will send me an old link of when a bunch of kiles met down in Texas and Kyle Texas.
3:58
[SPEAKER_01]: We gotta do it.
3:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we gotta have next time.
4:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm supposed to go.
4:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta go try that.
4:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta do it.
4:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I'll see you there.
4:06
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you don't even have to have your membership parties here ID.
4:09
[SPEAKER_03]: You're in.
4:10
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
4:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, man, happy Gilmore too.
4:13
[SPEAKER_03]: You did it.
4:16
[SPEAKER_03]: It works.
4:17
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, somewhat, thirty years later, there's no guarantees, right?
4:21
[SPEAKER_03]: I was so happy to watch this and go, well, they did it.
4:25
[SPEAKER_03]: It is as funny as the first one, and it really mean that.
4:28
[SPEAKER_01]: That means a lot.
4:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that.
4:30
[SPEAKER_01]: That's good because we're, that's what we're going for.
4:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
4:34
[SPEAKER_03]: So what, I mean, you had done what murder mystery, right?
4:39
[SPEAKER_03]: We did that first one.
4:41
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
4:42
[SPEAKER_03]: And so this is like you're in the family now.
4:45
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, it's not the same thing.
4:47
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's got to be extra weight to this.
4:50
[SPEAKER_01]: This was different than murder mystery.
4:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like murder mystery was a new project, you know, forging something new.
5:00
[SPEAKER_01]: There was nothing, you know, out of nothing, right?
5:02
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a brand new piece of property.
5:05
[SPEAKER_01]: This one is like, you've already built a fantastic building.
5:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Now go build another one right next to it.
5:13
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, what the, that one is so good though, like,
5:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
5:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
5:18
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, cool.
5:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Let me, you know, like I'm, if everybody thinks that this is supposed to be good, like it's supposed to happen, then let's, let's talk about it.
5:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And then screenplay comes in and immediately I'm like, oh, I'm in.
5:31
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is, we can do this.
5:33
[SPEAKER_01]: I can do this.
5:34
[SPEAKER_03]: So screenplay takes all the word.
5:35
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, the heavy lifting, I guess is what I mean.
5:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Screenplay is key.
5:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
5:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Screenplay is absolutely key.
5:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's,
5:43
[SPEAKER_01]: You can, I have a career that's based in improv, improv comedy in the digital era just went off.
5:55
[SPEAKER_01]: But you can't improv a good story.
5:58
[SPEAKER_01]: You just cannot.
6:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And if your story is not good and it's not hooking you, it's not doing the right things with the character, then it can be really hard to
6:09
[SPEAKER_01]: to achieve, you know, what we did.
6:12
[SPEAKER_01]: This screenplay was great from jump.
6:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, this is, this is gonna be good.
6:18
[SPEAKER_01]: This is gonna be really good.
6:20
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that instinctive?
6:21
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, Ken, Ken, you know, is it automatic that you can look and go, this isn't gonna work?
6:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Because comedy, it's so tricky, right?
6:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Because sure, we know how that works.
6:31
[SPEAKER_03]: I laugh at something I read, that's obvious, but to make that jump off of the page,
6:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that one of the biggest things is doesn't have the hooks that's going to get you emotionally without being super sappy, right?
6:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's super sappy is not great for comedy, but you absolutely have to be emotionally invested in order to really feel all of the jokes and stay with it.
6:56
[SPEAKER_01]: until the end and I know that this movie keeps you until the end and at the end of it you're feeling good despite the heavy themes that are in the film you know you're feeling good you're feeling really good so I think I mean I can tell I read a lot of screenplays this one had it this one had it majorly and we'll be right back right after this
7:18
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
7:19
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Kyle Newcheck.
7:22
[SPEAKER_03]: So then here you go.
7:24
[SPEAKER_03]: You walk through the doors of this.
7:27
[SPEAKER_03]: What comes next?
7:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Because do you try to recapture like that ninety's field?
7:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you make it something else?
7:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that part of the conversation?
7:36
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big part of the conversation.
7:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Like how you're going to do it thirty years later?
7:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a certain way to make a contemporary comedy.
7:44
[SPEAKER_01]: You know nowadays like with
7:47
[SPEAKER_01]: everything that we've got, all the new materials, all the new tools, all the new everything.
7:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's very different than the comedies of the nineties.
7:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very different than how they were making comedies in the nineties.
8:03
[SPEAKER_01]: They were still shooting on film and having to truck big pieces of camera equipment out on the golf course and use wires to get the shots, whereas
8:16
[SPEAKER_01]: I can send a drone out and get that shot.
8:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think inherently, it tries to take pieces from the first and just plug them in in a more sleek way, I guess, because we're smoother at filmmaking nowadays.
8:32
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's the mechanical elements that change the way it's being filmed, but the comedic elements, I think we're more hard to deal with because we have
8:45
[SPEAKER_01]: We have, like comedy nowadays has gotten to a place where it's kind of a lot, and it's a lot rooted in genre.
8:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's a, what type of comedy is it?
8:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's an action comedy.
8:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
8:57
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a, it's like a weird dark comedy.
9:01
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like this, but there's not a ton of like, it all has like this edge, I think, and the edge sometimes takes over.
9:09
[SPEAKER_01]: the comedy, like there's not a ton of comedy first movies right now.
9:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And so when we were making this, it became very clear that like this is a comedy first movie.
9:26
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we're doing.
9:28
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no genre to lay out.
9:29
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a
9:31
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a family fun, heartfelt comedy.
9:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think what was weird making it is I'm like, do they make these anymore?
9:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Where are they?
9:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just, so every choice to go there and not go super edgy
9:51
[SPEAKER_01]: which I'm very used to, every choice to go like more in the center and try and get as many people as possible laughing and not just the niche.
10:03
[SPEAKER_03]: felt bold in that crazy though because we grew up like that was everything, right?
10:09
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, she's Lord Michael produced every movie there, you know, throughout most of the nineties at least and through, you know, before and after too.
10:18
[SPEAKER_03]: But, but it's right because comedy changes and we have been in this sort of cerebral
10:24
[SPEAKER_03]: mean to write there's a lot of genres but there's a lot I'd said make farland on here the other day and that's what he said he said he said he said most comedies these days of the ones you looking up yeah that's funny right but yeah I am literally and I'm not trying to do the cliche but literally laughing out loud as I'm watching this thinking I haven't done that in a long time right like can we can we get out of our head when we're talking about comedy like that's like I think
10:49
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a big thing.
10:51
[SPEAKER_01]: You're not just judging it and saying like, yeah, that's funny.
10:53
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, actually let go of what's going on in your life and use this as a tool to release.
11:01
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we used to have this comedic form of release.
11:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we'd all have these jokes.
11:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we all got so annoyed with how many times you'd hear somebody quote anchor man.
11:12
[SPEAKER_01]: But now
11:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I want that.
11:16
[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
11:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I miss it.
11:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I miss that whole, that, that main job of comedy.
11:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I missed that, you know?
11:25
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this.
11:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
11:30
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Kyle Newcheck.
11:33
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a golf movie, too.
11:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you know about golf?
11:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that important, you know, even?
11:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
11:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I think golf is important.
11:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I think, I think you'll pick up on it.
11:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I am not a golfer.
11:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I learned most of what I know about golf on this movie from some of the best golfers in the world.
11:56
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
11:57
[SPEAKER_03]: That's not bad.
11:58
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it was a great way to be introduced to it.
12:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I just never picked it up.
12:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I never did.
12:05
[SPEAKER_01]: It was something that my grandfather did.
12:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And then happy Gilmore did it.
12:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I thought it was cool.
12:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, oh, I'm going to be a great golfer, just like happy Gilmore.
12:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember going to the
12:18
[SPEAKER_01]: to the driving range and trying it and just thinking like, man, I'm the worst.
12:23
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't send that experience.
12:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I think what I did connect was happy Gilmore is a golf superhero and we need to
12:33
[SPEAKER_01]: We need to be showing that.
12:35
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's part of the fun.
12:37
[SPEAKER_01]: The wish fulfillment of like, man, if I could just hit the ball, that's straight and that hard crush would be the best.
12:44
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so I knew that that element was very important to have you go more.
12:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And we need to just do some of the crazy shots out there.
12:53
[SPEAKER_03]: But that's it.
12:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Like you, you still, you still shot it as it would have, as it should have been shot, I guess.
12:59
[SPEAKER_03]: You shot it as if you knew how to shoot a golf movie.
13:02
[SPEAKER_01]: like that I understood how golf works and I understood how to shoot golf and you know and yeah I had fun with a lot of the shots I had fun with a lot of the
13:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I had fun with it.
13:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Once I cracked it open, I was like, oh, this is an amazing sport.
13:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I remember standing on the green with Ben stiller.
13:23
[SPEAKER_01]: He was just hanging out one day and we were looking at this putting green and we're both like, he's not really a golfer either.
13:29
[SPEAKER_01]: We're just tripping on how like, wave it is and like, how crazy like the lines of golf actually are.
13:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know,
13:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I like it now.
13:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
13:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I got myself a happy Gilmore Potter.
13:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm taking it out there.
13:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take it with me for the rest of my life.
13:48
[SPEAKER_03]: That's awesome.
13:50
[SPEAKER_03]: It's funny too.
13:50
[SPEAKER_03]: The unintentional tie because you got to Scotty Schepler in here doing some great jokes.
13:57
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm in Louisville.
13:58
[SPEAKER_03]: That's where I'm based.
13:59
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm in Louisville.
13:59
[SPEAKER_03]: This is where you got arrested.
14:00
[SPEAKER_03]: About a half mile from Tom talking from right now.
14:03
[SPEAKER_03]: So the fact that that's even mentioned in there.
14:07
[SPEAKER_03]: That's that's yeah.
14:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But we were hyped on that.
14:11
[SPEAKER_01]: We were really hyped.
14:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's great.
14:13
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a moment of pop culture that we got to, you know, mirror.
14:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So that'll be in there forever.
14:18
[SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
14:18
[SPEAKER_03]: Proud moment for this dumb city of ours.
14:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Good.
14:23
[SPEAKER_01]: They're good.
14:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Scotty Rocks, man.
14:25
[SPEAKER_01]: He's funny.
14:26
[SPEAKER_01]: He was really funny.
14:27
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
14:27
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, Andy, you just got so many.
14:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm sure everybody wanted to cameo in this.
14:32
[SPEAKER_03]: And I wanted to bring up, though, was Dennis Duke and of course, Dennis directed the original one.
14:41
[SPEAKER_03]: And here you have him in your directing him.
14:43
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, what's that like?
14:47
[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
14:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm not, I'm not just saying that.
14:51
[SPEAKER_01]: I really mean that.
14:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm one to like kind of try and leave my ego aside and just, you know, like learn as much as I can.
15:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And Dennis was so loving and cool and willing to sit there and
15:07
[SPEAKER_01]: and tell me all the stories of the past, and what was funny is when he was on set a lot, and he would sit there and he'd talk about the movies he's directed, and I'd be like, you directed saving Silverman?
15:19
[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of my favorite movies of all time.
15:22
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, oh yeah, and then he'd go into this long thing about it, and it was just cool, because you do, making a sequel, thirty years later, there's a lot of people standing around you that have been in the game for a long time.
15:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So for me, I've been in it since work of hollocks and kind of, you know, I'm probably fifteen years deep, but to have some of these people that have been in it now for forty-five years sitting around you or fifty years.
15:49
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just so cool for me to hear that, eh, it's always been chaotic.
15:57
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this has always been a crazy job.
16:03
[SPEAKER_01]: and and be just get some of the tricks some old tricks you know like yeah all listen I'll try it we got take two and three let's see all learn something I feel like I'm always a student and I do like pride myself on that yeah and luckily no ego I mean when you got you know the guy who's done the original around like I feel like that would be just a little bit like a little bit nerve-wracking
16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes.
16:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it is, it is, but at the same time, it's like, we all got to work together to make sure it's a team sport.
16:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Kelsey, bed bunny.
16:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Kelsey, Kelsey came out.
16:41
[SPEAKER_01]: He was awesome to hang with.
16:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Did some cool stuff on the day we had him.
16:48
[SPEAKER_01]: He really came out and crushed, like a bad bunny, Benito.
16:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, I think this might be his best work and it really mean that.
16:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, first time he rolled on a set, I didn't really get, I got to meet him a little bit before like the day before for a costume and something fitting.
17:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And then when he rolled on a set and costume, uh, take one, I lined it up and I was just like, are you kidding me?
17:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, wait, I'm really feeling, I'm really feeling on take one.
17:17
[SPEAKER_01]: What's going on?
17:18
[SPEAKER_01]: How come I totally believe this guy?
17:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like his, his bad buddy that good, bad buddies that good.
17:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Bad Bunny is great.
17:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And we've seen him do that a little bit.
17:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I started thinking about when I really started noticing John Tuturo, you know, like, in, I mean, I'd seen him in the other stuff, but within the Adam Sandler world, and you talk about quoting things like, was it, um, was it Mr. Deeds?
17:44
[SPEAKER_03]: That was it's, you know, in the elevator.
17:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, that's what I started associating this bad bunny thing.
17:48
[SPEAKER_03]: What I was like, man, he is.
17:51
[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I've always been entertained, but I think I was surprised still.
17:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
17:57
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I had, I mean, I didn't really have many expectations, but I was pleasantly like, not surprised, but I was just like, oh, this guy is, he's going places.
18:07
[SPEAKER_01]: This is, we're catching, I think this is like his second or third role in this movie.
18:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's like, okay, well, he's not gonna stop.
18:14
[SPEAKER_01]: He's gonna keep going.
18:15
[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't wait to see where he goes.
18:17
[SPEAKER_03]: No, good.
18:18
