- 0:00What's up everybody? It's your boy, Kefi of.
- 0:02Ghostcultmag.com and I am here today to bring you the review of
- 0:06the new deluxe reissue of Descendants, Milo.
- 0:09Goes to college. This is one of my favorite
- 0:18albums of all time. Descendants got to reclaim back
- 0:21their masters and they are on a huge re release campaign
- 0:25starting with the classic. First full.
- 0:28Length debut album by the band. They had an EP before this, The
- 0:31Fat EPA. Little history.
- 0:32About Descendants First and foremost, one of my favorite
- 0:34bands of all time, one of my favorite punk bands of all time,
- 0:37and easily a top ten album in the punk realm.
- 0:40So if you didn't know why you need to have this one, You see
- 0:43this guy's face everywhere, you see this logo everywhere.
- 0:45But why do you need to support this band is why the sentence
- 0:50were formed in 1977. They were a peer of Black.
- 0:53Flag. And the Minutemen, and they
- 0:55signed out of high school and recorded their first EP, the Fat
- 1:00EP with Michael Lockett, AKA Spot, one of the greatest early
- 1:04punk producers and mixers of the punk genre.
- 1:08Even though all these records probably sounded bad at the
- 1:11time, they were in, you know, just formative for hardcore and
- 1:15pop punk, and Descendants kind of straddled that line.
- 1:18Their first EP was very hardcore punk, and then they got Milo
- 1:22Akerman Milo in the band and Milo was going to biology
- 1:26school. Basically, they took their
- 1:28hardcore punk leanings, which kind of took away any of their
- 1:32sappy pop sensibility and just went full out hardcore on their
- 1:36first EP. And then they did this, which
- 1:39blends kind of back in the power pop and pop punk that they
- 1:44really helped form. They were really one of the
- 1:47first bands beside Bad Religion to really make pop punk on the
- 1:51West Coast, you know, akin to the remote in New York.
- 1:55So this album is super important.
- 1:58It's full of bankers. It's only it's less than 23
- 2:00minutes long. It's amazingly produced again by
- 2:04Spot. Milo kind of takes the band in a
- 2:06new direction. The entire album is about him
- 2:08leaving the music world to go to college to become a biologist.
- 2:13And it's very self aware. And it's very, you know, self
- 2:18depreciating humor. Which is a.
- 2:20You know, a forefront of punk rock like Vandals and other
- 2:24bands like that. And of course many, many bands
- 2:27took influence from them. But we'll talk about that in a
- 2:28second. Let's take a look at this new
- 2:30Descendants vinyl. So I got the hype sticker here.
- 2:32I've been spinning this bad boy Masters reclaimed and reissued.
- 2:35This is a rough trade exclusive indie store smoke show color
- 2:41vinyl. So this was sent to me.
- 2:42This is amazing. Wait till you see this y'all.
- 2:44And you know, this album was repressed a ton of times and
- 2:47bootleg then. Even though the band is well
- 2:49known for making their great sounding records.
- 2:51Bill Stevenson is their drummer also the drummer of all produced
- 2:54every great pop punk band. But, and he didn't produce this
- 2:57one. But you know, I'm sure it pained
- 2:58him and the rest of the band to know that for years and years
- 3:01this thing was bootlegged and burned off the tapes and CDs and
- 3:05probably not top quality. Here's your front cover with the
- 3:08type sticker sticking to it. Thank you, static claim.
- 3:10Here's the back cover. As you know, dedicated to Milo
- 3:13from the other members of the band because they thought he was
- 3:15quitting the band to go on to college and not come back.
- 3:19But he came back. This is a actual faithful
- 3:22reproduction of the lyric sheet inside.
- 3:24This thing looks like it's written on old 84 type, you
- 3:28know, like typing paper like 8 1/2 by 10.
- 3:32Super fun and unique and all handwritten lyrics by Milo.
- 3:35Which is. Incredible and I'm a huge fan of
- 3:39it. Don't need a download card.
- 3:40This thing is streaming anywhere and why would you download it
- 3:42when you could play this beast on your turntable?
- 3:45This came in the mylar. I'm deeply.
- 3:47Appreciative of. You record labels putting stuff
- 3:50out on the mylar. So here is side one and two.
- 3:53You can kind of see in the room here this really beautiful
- 3:56smoke, actual looking smoke vinyl, not quite translucent
- 4:01here. That's a good way to start
- 4:02showing the color, right? Kind of looks like cigarette
- 4:05yellow cigarette smoke or yellow cigarette teeth.
- 4:08Perfect the way it is. I love this thing.
- 4:11You know, this record is incredible.
- 4:13It has been, you know. Covered.
- 4:15And lauded by everybody. Fat Mike.
- 4:18Said this is his. Favorite record of all time?
- 4:19You can check out our Fight Fat Mike of No Effects farewell
- 4:23interview on the channel. And you know, it's been covered
- 4:26basically by every great punk band.
- 4:30Originally released on the new Alliance record label, which was
- 4:33owned by D Boone and Mike Watt from the Minutemen from San.
- 4:36Pedro just. Like no effects.
- 4:39Just like Circle Jerks. That whole region of.
- 4:43Socal. Really.
- 4:44Put Socal punk on the map. You're, you know, also at the
- 4:49same time Suicidal Tendencies getting kicked out of out of LA
- 4:52for their hardcore punk, and certainly they're very violent.
- 4:55Shows but you know. Milo coming into the band
- 4:59stepped up the whole band from Milo Goes to College, and
- 5:02obviously later on the band would go on hiatus and spin off
- 5:05to all and then come back again many times as Descendants.
- 5:09They're about as good now as I've ever seen them, and I love
- 5:11hearing these songs still to this day.
- 5:13Let's just go through the track listing, but it's all bangers.
- 5:16This is again out now on Org Recordings.
- 5:19Your information If you're going to go pick this up, there'll be
- 5:21a link in the description where you can buy it.
- 5:27My age I want to be a bear. I'm not a loser classic.
- 5:30All these are classics. Parents Tony Age M16 I'm not a
- 5:34punk. Catalina.
- 5:35Incredible song. Suburban home.
- 5:37Statue of Liberty. Kabuki girl marriage hope.
- 5:40Maybe the best fucked up love song of all time.
- 5:43Bike Edge. And Gene is dead and you know,
- 5:45the band kind of had their own language, which is like similar
- 5:48to. Suicidal.
- 5:49In a way and and similar to Ramones that they had and and
- 5:52other punk bands, they had their own language.
- 5:55Right the. All mentality becomes all the
- 5:57band and the the my edge, you know, marriage.
- 6:02Bike Edge. These things become a lexicon
- 6:05for punks in in the Southern California scene.
- 6:08I deeply suggest you go to Las Vegas to Fat Mike's Punk Rock
- 6:13Museum. There's a lot of Descendants
- 6:14love there. There's a lot of.
- 6:15Love for this record there, you know, it's just an absolute
- 6:19classic and I'm really glad the is so high quality now
- 6:23remastered for vinyl finally in the correct form.
- 6:26And maybe it was before, but yeah, I've never heard it sound
- 6:29this good on this record and. I'm just absolutely stoked.
- 6:33I'm very grateful to get. This Shout out to the publicist.
- 6:36Shout out to shout out to the label.
- 6:37For sending this along to me. And yeah, I'm going to be loving
- 6:41this one for a long time. I absolutely love this band.
- 6:43This is an essential record for your punk collection, especially
- 6:47for you American pop punks and all the bands I love.
- 6:51The the quote from Fat Mike. If this album had come out in
- 6:541999, they'd be millionaires. Maybe billionaires, but you know
- 6:59everybody else. Kind of.
- 7:00Took their format and and did it and did it and did it again.
- 7:03But you can't, you can't fight the funk on the original.
- 7:06This is amazing. Huge fan here.
- 7:08Milo goes to college. You've seen the Milo graphic
- 7:13everywhere. Now you know why you need to
- 7:15know about this band and why you need to get this record,
- 7:17especially this reissue, one of the top reissues of the year.
- 7:20This year I'm Kefi a ghost called Keep it Here for news,
- 7:23interviews and product. Reviews.
- 7:26And more coming soon. Peace.
- 7:28I suppose I'm a poser. I'll pose with the record.
- 7:39Dirk Manning. No, I think it worked.
- 7:46What if I? What if I do that?
- 7:49Milo has a hat on. Milo has a hat on over here on
- 7:53the back door. But again, I like that first
- 7:59surprise face.
