- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Monday, it's the start of
- 0:15a new week. It's the 5th of January and I
- 0:18don't know whether you are back into the swing of things from
- 0:21today, or whether you have got another week of basking in the
- 0:25glory of holidays, whichever of those you are.
- 0:28Or whether you are past all of that and you are now retired and
- 0:32every day is a holiday slash busy period and you wonder how
- 0:35that happened. But wherever you are, no matter
- 0:37what's going on in your life, you have taken a moment this
- 0:40week to join me. As the two of us are going to
- 0:43travel back in time and walk those Palestinian streets.
- 0:48We are going to breathe in that dust in our nostrils.
- 0:51We are going to feel the the heat on our shoulders and see
- 0:55the intrigue unfolding around us as the Saviour of the world, the
- 1:00God of the universe in flesh form, walks the streets and
- 1:05interacts and heals and teaches and loves.
- 1:08What a privilege to get to see this happening first hand
- 1:13through the eyes of our old mate Luke.
- 1:15Our Holy Spirit open our hearts that we would see and experience
- 1:21Jesus afresh as we hear the words of the Gospel.
- 1:25You ready friends? Yeah, me too.
- 1:27Let us read together Luke Chapter 7.
- 1:40When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he
- 1:43returned to Capernaum. At that time, the highly valued
- 1:47slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.
- 1:50When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected
- 1:54Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.
- 1:57So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man.
- 2:00If anyone deserves your help, he does, they said, for he loves
- 2:05the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.
- 2:08So Jesus went to them. But just before they arrived at
- 2:11the house, the officer sent some friends to say, Lord, don't
- 2:16trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of
- 2:19such an honour. I am not even worthy to come and
- 2:21meet you. Just say the word from where you
- 2:24are and my servant will be healed.
- 2:26I know this because I am under the authority of my superior
- 2:30officers and I have authority over my soldiers.
- 2:33I only need to say go and they go, or come and they come.
- 2:38And if I say to my slaves do this, they do it.
- 2:43When Jesus heard this, he was amazed.
- 2:46Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, I tell
- 2:50you, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel.
- 2:54And when the officer's friends returned to his house, they
- 2:57found the slave completely healed.
- 3:01Soon afterward, Jesus went with his disciples to the village of
- 3:05Nain, and a large crowd followed him.
- 3:08A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village
- 3:11gate. The young man who had died was a
- 3:14widow's only son, and a large crowd from the village was with
- 3:18her. When the Lord saw her, his heart
- 3:22overflowed with compassion. Don't cry, he said.
- 3:26Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the
- 3:29bearers stopped. Young man, he said, I tell you,
- 3:34get up. Then the dead boy sat up and
- 3:38began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
- 3:42Great fear swept the crowd and they praised God, saying, a
- 3:46mighty prophet has risen among us and God has visited his
- 3:51people today. And the news about Jesus spread
- 3:55throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.
- 3:59The disciples of John the Baptist told John about
- 4:02everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his
- 4:06disciples, and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, Are you the
- 4:10Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for
- 4:13someone else? John's two disciples found Jesus
- 4:16and said to him. John the Baptist sent us to ask,
- 4:20Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep
- 4:23looking for someone else? At that very time, Jesus cured
- 4:28many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and
- 4:32he restored sight to many who are blind.
- 4:35Then he told John's disciples, Go back to John and tell him
- 4:39what you have seen and heard. The blind see the lame walk,
- 4:44those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are
- 4:48raised to life, and the good news is being preached to the
- 4:52poor. And he added, God blesses those
- 4:56who do not fall away because of me.
- 4:59After John's disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to
- 5:03the crowds. What kind of man did you go into
- 5:06the wilderness to see? Was he a weak Reed, swayed by
- 5:10every breath of wind? Or were you expecting to see a
- 5:13man dressed in expensive clothes?
- 5:16No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are
- 5:20found in palaces. Are you looking for a prophet?
- 5:24Yes, and he is more than a prophet.
- 5:27John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say,
- 5:30look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will
- 5:34prepare your way before you. I tell you, of all who have ever
- 5:39lived, none is greater than John.
- 5:42Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than
- 5:46he is. When they heard this, all the
- 5:49people, even the tax collectors, agree that God's way was right,
- 5:54for they had been baptised by John.
- 5:56But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God's
- 6:00plan for them, for they had refused John's baptism.
- 6:04To what can I compare the people of this generation?
- 6:08Jesus asked. How can I describe them?
- 6:11They are like children playing a game in the public square.
- 6:15They complain to their friends. We played wedding songs and you
- 6:18didn't dance, so we played funeral songs and you didn't
- 6:22weep. For John the Baptist didn't
- 6:25spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say he's
- 6:29possessed by a demon. The Son of Man, on the other
- 6:32hand, feasts and drinks, and you say he's a glutton and a
- 6:36drunkard and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners.
- 6:40But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow
- 6:44it. One of the Pharisees asked Jesus
- 6:48to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to his home and
- 6:51sat down to eat, when a certain immoral woman from the city
- 6:55heard he was eating there. She brought a beautiful
- 6:58alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.
- 7:02Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping.
- 7:06Her tears fell on his feet and she wiped them off with her
- 7:09hair. Then she kept kissing his feet
- 7:12and putting perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had
- 7:15invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a
- 7:19prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him.
- 7:23She's a Sinner. Then Jesus answered his
- 7:26thoughts. Simon, he said to the Pharisee,
- 7:30I have something to say to you. Go ahead, teacher, Simon
- 7:33replied. Then Jesus told him this story.
- 7:37A man loaned money to two people, 500 pieces of silver to
- 7:411 and 50 pieces to the other, but neither of them could repay
- 7:45him. So he kindly forgave them both,
- 7:48cancelling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him
- 7:51more after that? Simon answered.
- 7:54I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the larger debt.
- 7:57That's right, Jesus said. Then he turned to the woman and
- 8:01said to Simon, Look at this woman kneeling here.
- 8:05When I entered your home, you didn't offer me water to wash
- 8:08the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears
- 8:12and wiped them with her hair. You didn't greet me with a kiss,
- 8:16but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing
- 8:20my feet. You neglected the courtesy of
- 8:23olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with
- 8:27rare perfume. I tell you her sins, and they
- 8:31are many, have been forgiven. So she has shown me much love.
- 8:37But a person who is forgiven little shows only a little love.
- 8:41Then Jesus said to the woman, Your sins are forgiven.
- 8:46The men at the table said amongst themselves, who is this
- 8:49man that he goes around forgiving sins?
- 8:53And Jesus said to the woman, your faith has saved you go in
- 8:57peace. Ah, Jesus, we like that woman
- 9:11come to you broken and just so aware that we need your saving.
- 9:17We need your grace in our lives to bring us not as broken and
- 9:23sinful people, but as beloved children before the throne of
- 9:28the Father. And it's only through you and
- 9:30your gift that we do that. And so we come, knowing how much
- 9:35we need your saving grace and our hearts equally grateful
- 9:41because we know that you give us this gift.
- 9:44Oh, you are the most wonderful, kind, compassionate, and
- 9:48forgiving God, Jesus, and we love you and we're so grateful
- 9:53for all that you do for us. Help us always maintain this
- 9:57posture of gratitude in every day, in every moment, so that it
- 10:02shapes us and the way that we move in this world with grateful
- 10:06hearts. So with praise and Thanksgiving
- 10:09overflowing from our hearts, we pray all of this in your name,
- 10:13Jesus, Amen.
