Robert Falcon Scott - Part 5: The aftermath of a heroic journey
Months after the march, the search for Scott and his party began in earnest. In mid-November of nineteen twelve, a search party found the last camp, locating the final instruments and the men who had been left to the ice. The scene at the point of discovery was spare and exacting: a tent, partially collapsed under the weight of wind-packed snow, its canvas hammered and ridged by drifting crystals; instruments encrusted in rime, their brass fittings dulled by months of frost; scattered scientific notes, ragged edges softened and stiffened by damp and cold.
