1:09
Speaker 1: Kochanovsky fifteen thirty to fifteen eighty four was the greatest
1:14
Speaker 1: poet of Poland during its existence as an independent kingdom.
1:18
Speaker 1: His Laments are his masterpiece, the choicest work of Polish
1:22
Speaker 1: lyric poetry before the time of Mitskyevitch. Kochanovsky was a
1:28
Speaker 1: learned poet of the Renaissance, drawing his inspiration from the
1:32
Speaker 1: literatures of Greece and Rome. He was also a man
1:35
Speaker 1: of sincere piety, famous for his translation of the psalms
1:39
Speaker 1: into his native language. In his Laments, written in memory
1:43
Speaker 1: of his little daughter Ursula, who died in fifteen seventy
1:47
Speaker 1: nine at the age of thirty months, he expresses the
1:51
Speaker 1: deepest personal emotion through the medium of a literary style
1:55
Speaker 1: that had been developed by long years of study. The Laments,
2:00
Speaker 1: to be sure, are not based on any classic model,
2:03
Speaker 1: and they contain few direct imitations of the classical poets,
2:07
Speaker 1: though it may be noted that the concluding couplet of
2:10
Speaker 1: Lament fifteen is translated from the Greek Anthology. On the
2:14
Speaker 1: other hand, they are interspersed with continual references to classic story,
2:19
Speaker 1: and more important, are filled with the atmosphere of the
2:22
Speaker 1: Stoic philosophy derived from Cicero and Seneca, and along with
2:27
Speaker 1: this austere teaching, there runs through them a warmer tone
2:31
Speaker 1: of Christian hope and trust. Lament eighteen is, in spirit
2:36
Speaker 1: a psalm to us of today. However, these poems appeal
2:41
Speaker 1: less by their formal perfection, by their learning, or by
2:45
Speaker 1: their religious tone than by their exquisite humanity, Kochanovsky's sincerity
2:50
Speaker 1: of grief, his fatherly love for his baby girl after
2:54
Speaker 1: more than three centuries, have not lost their power to
2:57
Speaker 1: touch our hearts. In the Laments, Kochanovsky embodied a wholesome
3:03
Speaker 1: ideal of life, such as animated the finest spirits of
3:06
Speaker 1: Poland in the years of its greatest glory, a spirit
3:10
Speaker 1: both humanistic and universally human. G r nois to Ursula Kochanovsky,
3:21
Speaker 1: a charming, merry gifted child who, after showing great promise
3:26
Speaker 1: of all maidenly virtues and talents, suddenly prematurely in her
3:31
Speaker 1: unripe years, to the great and unbearable grief of her
3:35
Speaker 1: parents departed. Hence written with tears for his beloved little
3:40
Speaker 1: girl by Jan Kochanovsky, her hapless father, Thou art no

Speaker 1: Lament too. If I had ever thought to write in
8:21
Speaker 1: praise of little children and their simple ways, far rather
8:24
Speaker 1: had I fashioned a cradle verse to rock, to slumber,
8:28
Speaker 1: or the songs a nurse might croon above the baby
8:32
Speaker 1: on her breast, setting her charger's short lived woes at rest.
8:37
Speaker 1: For much more useful are such trifling tasks than that
8:41
Speaker 1: would sad misfortune this day asks to weep all thy
8:46
Speaker 1: deaf grave, dear maiden mine, and wail the harshness of
8:51
Speaker 1: grim proserpine. But now I have no choice of subject.
8:56
Speaker 1: Then I shunned a theme scarce fitting riper men, And
9:01
Speaker 1: now disaster drives me on by force to songs unheeded
9:06
Speaker 1: by the great concourse of mortals, verses that I would
9:10
Speaker 1: not sing the living to the dead. Our needs must bring. Yet,
9:16
Speaker 1: though I dry the marrow from my bones, weeping in
9:19
Speaker 1: other's death, my grief a tones no wit. All forms

9:50
Speaker 1: the halls of night. How would thou hadst not lived
9:53
Speaker 1: that little breath? What didst thou know? But only birth?

13:29
Speaker 1: could her death have brought more cruel ache than now,
13:33

15:17

15:22
Speaker 1: So was it with my ursula, my dear, A little
15:26

17:08
Speaker 1: thy songs so sweetly deftly wrought, that thou wouldst have
17:12
Speaker 1: an heritage one day beyond thy father's lands, his lute
17:17
Speaker 1: to play, and not an hour of daylight's joyous round.
17:21
Speaker 1: But thou didst fee it full of lovely sound, just
17:24
Speaker 1: as the nightingale doth scatter pleasure upon the dark in
17:29
Speaker 1: glad unstinted measure. Then death came stalking near thee timid thing,
17:36
Speaker 1: and thou, in sudden terror, tookst wing ah that delight.
17:42
Speaker 1: It was not over long, And I pay dear with
17:45
Speaker 1: sorrow for brief song thou still word singing. When thou
17:49
Speaker 1: camest to die, kissing thy mother, doth thou saidst good bye,
17:55
Speaker 1: my mother. I shall serve thee now no more, nor
17:59
Speaker 1: sit about thy table boll's charming store. I must lay
18:02

18:05

21:21
Speaker 1: so great a space for thou didst sing thy joyousness
21:25
Speaker 1: to all, running through every nook of house and hall.
21:30
Speaker 1: Thou wouldst not have thy mother grieve, nor let thy father,
21:33
Speaker 1: with too solemn thinking, fret his head. But thou must
21:37
Speaker 1: kiss them daughter mine, and all with that entruncing laugh

Speaker 1: Thus spoke my mother, sighing bitterly. I woke, or seemed
1:00:36
Speaker 1: to wake, and heard her say once more, and is
1:00:40
Speaker 1: thy weeping brings me to this shore. Thy lamentations, long uncomforted,
1:00:45
Speaker 1: have reached the hidden chambers of the dead, till I
1:00:48
Speaker 1: have come to grant thee some small grace. And let
1:00:52
Speaker 1: THEE gaze upon thy daughter's face, that it may harm
1:00:55
Speaker 1: thy heart in some degree, and checked the grief that
1:00:59
Speaker 1: imperceptible doth gnaw away thy health, And leave thee sick
1:01:04
Speaker 1: like fire that turns to ashes a dry wick. Dost
1:01:07
Speaker 1: thou believe the dead have perish'd quite the sun gone
1:01:11
Speaker 1: down in an eternal night. Ah No, we have a
1:01:16
Speaker 1: being farn more splendid, now that our body's coarser claims
1:01:20
Speaker 1: are ended. Though dust returns to dust, the spirit given
1:01:25
Speaker 1: a life eternal must go back to heaven. A little
1:01:29
Speaker 1: ursula hath not gone out forever like a torch. Nay,
1:01:34
Speaker 1: cease thy doubt, for I have brought her hither in
1:01:37
Speaker 1: the guise she used to wear before thy mortal eyes.
1:01:41
Speaker 1: Though mid the deathless angels bright afar, she shineth as
1:01:45
Speaker 1: the lovely morning star. And still she offers up her
1:01:49
Speaker 1: prayers for you as here on earth, When yet no
1:01:52
Speaker 1: words she knew if herefrom springs thy sorrow, that her
1:01:57
Speaker 1: years were broken off before all that endears a lie
1:02:00
Speaker 1: life on earth to mortals, she might prove. Yet, think
1:02:03
Speaker 1: how empty the delights that move the minds of men,
1:02:07
Speaker 1: delights that must give place at last to sorrow, As
1:02:10
Speaker 1: in thine own case did then thy little girl such
1:02:14
Speaker 1: joy confer that all a comfort thou didst find in
1:02:17
Speaker 1: her could parallel thine anguish of to day? Thou canst
1:02:22
Speaker 1: not answer otherwise than nay, then fret not that so
1:02:27
Speaker 1: early death has come to what was dearest thee in Christendom.
1:02:32
Speaker 1: She did not leave a land of much delight, but
1:02:34
Speaker 1: one of toil and grief and evil, blight so plenteous
1:02:39
Speaker 1: that all which men can hold of their so transitory
1:02:42
Speaker 1: blessings gold must lose its value through this base alloy,
1:02:48
Speaker 1: this knowledge of the grief that follows joy. Why do
1:02:52
Speaker 1: we weep, Great God, that with her dower she brought
1:02:56
Speaker 1: herself no lord, that she might cower before upbreadth from
1:03:00
Speaker 1: her husband's kin, That she knew not the pangs that
1:03:04
Speaker 1: usher in the new born child, and that she could
1:03:08
Speaker 1: not know, like her poor mother, if more racking woe
1:03:11
Speaker 1: it were to bear or bury them, Ah, meet o
1:03:15
Speaker 1: such delights to make the world more sweet, but heaven
1:03:20
Speaker 1: hath purer, surer happiness, free from all intermingling of distress.
1:03:25
Speaker 1: Care rules not here, and here we know not toil.
1:03:29
Speaker 1: Misfortune and disaster do not spoil here. Sickness cannot enter,
1:03:35
Speaker 1: nor old age and death tear nourished. Hath no pasturage.
1:03:41
Speaker 1: We live a life of endless joy that brings good thoughts.
1:03:45
Speaker 1: We know the causes of all things. The sun shines
1:03:48
Speaker 1: on forever here, its light unconquer'd by impenetrable night, and
1:03:53
Speaker 1: the Creator, in his majesty, invisible to mortals we may see.
1:03:58
Speaker 1: Then turn I meditations hither towards this changeless gladness and
1:04:03
Speaker 1: these rich rewards. Thou know'st the world what love of
1:04:08
Speaker 1: it can do found Thou thine efforts on a base
1:04:11
Speaker 1: more true. Thy little girl hath chosen well her part.
1:04:15
Speaker 1: Thou mayst believe as one about to start for the
1:04:18
Speaker 1: first time upon the stormy sea beholding their great flux,
1:04:23
Speaker 1: and jeopardy returneth to the shore, While those that raise
1:04:28
Speaker 1: their sails the wind or some blind crag betrays, and
1:04:33
Speaker 1: this one dies from hunger, that from cold scarce. One
1:04:37
Speaker 1: escapes the perils manifold so she who, though her years
1:04:42
Speaker 1: should have surpassed that ancient Sybyl, must have died at last,
1:04:47
Speaker 1: preferred that ending to anticipate before she knew the ills
1:04:51
Speaker 1: of man's estate. For some are left without their parents
1:04:55
Speaker 1: care to know how sore an orphan's lot to bear,
1:04:59
Speaker 1: one girl must marry headlong, and then rue her dow
1:05:02
Speaker 1: given up to God knows who. Some maids are seized
1:05:06
Speaker 1: by their own countrymen, others made captive by the Tartar
1:05:10
Speaker 1: clan and held thus in a pagan shameful Thrall must
1:05:15
Speaker 1: drink their tears till death comes, ending all but this,
1:05:19
Speaker 1: thy little child need fear no more, who taken early
1:05:23
Speaker 1: up to Heaven's door, could walk all glad and shining
1:05:27
Speaker 1: pure within her soul, still innocent of earthly sin. Doubt not,
1:05:33
Speaker 1: my son, that all is well with her, And let
1:05:36
Speaker 1: not sorrow be thy conqueror, reason and self command, a
1:05:40
Speaker 1: precious still and yielding all to blighted hope is ill
1:05:45
Speaker 1: be in this matter, Thine own Lord. Although thy long
1:05:49
Speaker 1: for happiness, thou must forego. For man is born exposed
1:05:53
Speaker 1: to circumstance, to be the target of all evil chance,
1:05:58
Speaker 1: And if we like it or we like it not,
1:06:01
Speaker 1: we still cannot escape our destined lot. Nor hath misfortune
1:06:05
Speaker 1: singled thee my son, it lays its burdens upon every one.
1:06:10
Speaker 1: Thy little child was mortal as thou art. She ran
1:06:14
Speaker 1: her given course and did depart. And if that course
1:06:18
Speaker 1: was brief, yet who can say that she would have
1:06:21
Speaker 1: been happier to stay? The ways of God are past
1:06:25
Speaker 1: our finding out. Yet what he holds as good shall
1:06:28
Speaker 1: we misdoubt. And when the spirit leaves us, it is
1:06:32
Speaker 1: vain to weep so long it will not come again.
1:06:35
Speaker 1: And herein man is hardly just to fate, to bear
1:06:39
Speaker 1: in mind what is unfortunate in life, and to forget
1:06:43
Speaker 1: all that transpires in full accordance with his own desires.
1:06:48
Speaker 1: And such is fortune's power, dearest son, that we should
1:06:52
Speaker 1: not lament when she hath done a bitter turn, but
1:06:55
Speaker 1: thank her in that she hath held her hand from
1:06:58
Speaker 1: greater injury. So yielding to the common order, bar thy
1:07:03
Speaker 1: heart to more disasters than thou are. Gaze at the
1:07:07
Speaker 1: happiness thou dost retain. What is not loss that must
1:07:11
Speaker 1: be rated again? And finally, what profits the expense of
1:07:16
Speaker 1: thy long labor and the years gone? Hence while thou
1:07:20
Speaker 1: didst spend thyself upon thy books, a newest scarce, how
1:07:24
Speaker 1: lightsome pleasure looks now from thy grafting, Pluck the fruit
1:07:29
Speaker 1: and save something of value from frail nature's grave. To
1:07:34
Speaker 1: other men in sorrow, thou hast shown the comfort left
1:07:37
Speaker 1: them hast none for thine own Now master, heal thyself.
1:07:43
Speaker 1: Time is the cure for all, but he whose wisdom
1:07:47
Speaker 1: doth obdure the common ways he should anticipate the healing
1:07:51
Speaker 1: for which other men must wait. What is time's cunning
1:07:56
Speaker 1: that it drives away our former HAPs with new all
1:08:00
Speaker 1: one's more gay or like the old. So man, by
1:08:04
Speaker 1: taking thought, perceives them ere their accidents are wrought, and
1:08:09
Speaker 1: by such thinking banishes the past and views the future
1:08:13
Speaker 1: quiet and steadfast. Then bear man's portion like a man,
1:08:18
Speaker 1: my son. The lord of grief and comfort is but one.
1:08:23
Speaker 1: Then I awoke, and know not if to deem this
1:08:26
Speaker 1: truth itself or but a passing dream.
