- 1:18now it's time for today's episode of The Saint. The original Airnate August six
- 1:23of nineteen fifty. In the title the Corpse set out and after the show
- 1:27we'll talk a little bit about when I recorded the commentary and listen to the
- 1:32show. But let's go ahead and get into The Saint. Now. The
- 1:55Adventures of the Saint, starring Vincent Price the same. It's based on characters
- 2:10created by Leslie Charteris and non divisions from books, magazines, and motion pictures.
- 2:15The robin Hood of modern crime now comes transcribed to radios Darling Hollywood's brilliants
- 2:20and talented actor Vincent Price. Let's sink. I'm not home. It's the
- 2:30middle of the night and I'm asleep. I'm in Schenectady, sitting up with
- 2:35a sick ant. Hello. Hello, are you Simon Templar? Come in
- 2:46and we'll compare social security guind Thank you. I thought you were in Schenectady.
- 2:52Never heard of the place. Sitting up with a sick ad is she
- 2:53recovered? Suddenly, Simon, I need help desperately? Why because I'm dead?
- 3:00You're what dead? Oh? Well, of course some of my best
- 3:05friends, Simon. My name is Francis Blake. Here. Read this that
- 3:08little item down in the corner under obituaries. Obituaries says here that the body
- 3:17of Francis Blake is at the rest Well Chapel Burial at noon tomorrow. You
- 3:23see the newspapers say that I'm dead. Yeah, but I don't know whether
- 3:28to believe them or not. You are Francis Blair, of course I am.
- 3:32Come here a moment, all right, Thank you now, Simon,
- 3:38what are you? I thank your pardon. You pinched me? Yeah,
- 3:43well, I had to make sure I wasn't dreaming. But you're supposed to
- 3:46pinch yourself if you think you're dreaming. I know, but this way was
- 3:50more fun. Although I never heard a corpse say ouch before, therefore you're
- 3:53not dead, I already knew that I didn't. Now that that's settled,
- 3:58I think perhaps we ought to go it. Who your corpse? Taxi?
- 4:16Taxi? Hey, your night rain up right? Never mind, Louis,
- 4:26mister Temple. Had I have normal was you, I wouldn't have bothered with
- 4:29the whims. Had I known it was you, I just wouldn't have bothered.
- 4:31However, friends, thank you. Louis should perhaps be explained. He's
- 4:39a cab driver. I try to avoid. I rarely succeed, which proves
- 4:43to me that my life isn't all that it should be. Keep it clean?
- 4:46And where at this hour of the night are you gone? The rest?
- 4:48Will chapel? Get another cat, Louie? Okay, okay. Some
- 4:55sport takes a girl to see a funeral follower in the middle of the night.
- 4:59I met it taking her home. She lives in a funeral pollom,
- 5:01she's dead in a funeral parlor, displayed a me. Excuse me, but
- 5:08Louis, I don't take your hands, will I already did so, she
- 5:13said out personally. I would have like to find out for myself, but
- 5:16if you say so, I do. I'll take your word for it.
- 5:19Only. How are you gonna explain to the funeral palla, how riding around
- 5:23in cabs? Would you? Simple? I am apparently the kind of a
- 5:25man a girl wouldn't mind being seen dead with the rest while chapel at your
- 5:46surface. Louis, I know, wait, but I'm telling you one thing,
- 5:51considering the type of company you're keeping, I ain't waiting until nobody plays
- 5:56no hot licks in a trumpet. I don't think you'll have to come along,
- 6:00Francis. I've been trying to pretend to myself that it's all some kind
- 6:06of a joke, but that funeral parlor looks too real. We'll find out
- 6:13soon enough. One nice thing about funeral pilors. They're always open that you
- 6:17call nice. She have a point there. Listen to that doorbell chopin.
- 6:24At least, oh, I beg your pardon, I said, oh ah,
- 6:32come in, Francis, this is an hour that comes to all except
- 6:40in states that don't have daylight saving. I sure was referring to your bereavement.
- 6:46Whom are you mourning? We would like to look at Francis Blake The
- 6:50hour is late, but grief knows no clock. Good Heaven's an epigram.
- 6:56Who we try, sir? If you'll follow me, thank you? Ay,
- 7:05we are and there she is beautiful, isn't she very? Simon?
- 7:15She does look like me a little bit, but hardly enough to explain.
- 7:19How did she get here, miss blakeman? The police brought her. Oh,
- 7:25I see who identified her? That was highly necessary. Her coat over
- 7:29there in the corner sign. Wait a minute, Francis, what about her
- 7:32coat? It had her name on the label. Now I shall withdraw.
- 7:36You will want to be alone with your grief, all right, But make
- 7:40a sound withdrawing, please, so we'll know you're withdrawn, really, sir,
- 7:45it's no use jesting. The dead never laugh. Well he's withdrawn,
- 7:54Simon. That's my code. It is mine, Simon. But look,
- 8:00yes, two holes in the front of it. Bullet holes. Bullet holes.
- 8:03The girl here, whoever she is, was, was murdered. Come
- 8:07on, we better get out all right, but I'm taking my coat.
- 8:09I don't think it's mine, not hers. It belongs to me, even
- 8:13though she was murdered in it, Simon, What was that girl doing with
- 8:31Michael wearing it when she was shot? Presumably there's another question, perhaps a
- 8:35more important one. Why was she shot in the first place? I suppose
- 8:39she had enemies? Have you? Yeah, we're back again, Francis.
- 8:45Oh, thank you. The little lady lost the place, Francis, where
- 8:48do you live the Thornton town? Simon? Back there? Why did you
- 8:56ask if I had any enemies? The coat's a distinctive one, very colorful
- 9:01plan. Yes, the girl back at the funeral parlor was murdered while wearing
- 9:03it. The question comes to was her wearing the coat when she was killed
- 9:07merely a coincidence or was she killed because her murderer thought she was you?
- 9:31And here you are, Louis, And I know, don't wait on the
- 9:35kind of you're shitting up with a dead friend. Good night, Louis,
- 9:39good night, good night folks. Oh, Simon, it's so good to
- 9:46be back home my apartments down the corridor. Simon, I feel terrible.
- 9:56No, you needn't. But what you said in the cab. She she
- 10:00was wearing my coat, a very distinctive one, and then she was shot
- 10:03to death. That girl is dead because of me. Oh, we don't
- 10:05really know that. It must be so somebody thought she was me and kill
- 10:09them. That's possible. Then that means that somebody wants to kill me.
- 10:18Is this your door? Oh? Yes, of course. It's also possible
- 10:24that someone didn't like the coat. And hey, did you leave your lights
- 10:28on when you left? No, there's a light in the room ahead.
- 10:31Well, that's the living room. Used to hear in the hall. I'll
- 10:33go ahead and see who it is. I just want to make sure they're
- 10:35neutral on the subject of plaid coats or you. Oh hello, hello,
- 10:46ah, how she was beautiful? Your wife? What? Your wife?
- 10:52It's her picture on the desk. There no man, that does seem to
- 10:56be a picture of Francis. And your name? She my name is Simon.
- 11:01It is a name that fills herself with the soul. No, No,
- 11:07I knew that tonight, of all nights, you would be lonely.
- 11:11Believe me, I am here. Or your wife, she must have been
- 11:16a wonderful woman. Your life with her was the magnificent symphony. No chamber
- 11:24music would probably be more accurate. And now that she is the last gone,
- 11:30I am here without even a pause for station identification. Look who are
- 11:35you? I am, Olga? Who is she? Who is she?
- 11:43Francis? And now that you two have met, waiting a moment, huh
- 11:46aha, I look on the picture. I look on the flash, the
- 11:52flash of which I might adding, your wife is perhaps carrying a little too
- 11:58much here and there, especially there now just a minute, whatsn't point?
- 12:03Allga? Bad man is? But I am seeing your wife. She is
- 12:07not dead. She isn't That is Francis, isn't If you like, you
- 12:09could try pinching her. I never pinch except boys, simon, you are
- 12:16disappointing me. Goodbye. Well that was quite a performance personally. I didn't
- 12:22care for her cadenza. Oh I don't know. It was a nice cadenza,
- 12:26and the two D was definitely really that is, Francis. The whole
- 12:31thing was camouflaged for what. Take a look at the room. The room,
- 12:35Oh yes, it looks as if a junior hurricane had visited it.
- 12:39You mean somebody of all go search the room? Uh huh? This one,
- 12:43and yeah, the bedroom as well. But Simon, what was she
- 12:48looking for? I don't know whatever it was, she didn't find it.
- 12:52Our entrance stopped her search. Well, i'd better start straightening things up a
- 12:56bit, good idea, I'll help you. Well. Shouldn't you be going
- 12:58home? Oh? I don't think so. You may get some more visitors
- 13:01later on, and rougher ones than Allga. Why, maybe they'll tell us
- 13:05if we ask them prettily. In the meanwhile, Yes, Simon, we
- 13:09can practice the overture to that symphony Alga mentioned, Simon. Yes, it's
- 13:28getting awfully late. Yes, I know. We really can't sit up all
- 13:33night waiting for someone to come. We don't even know for sure that someone
- 13:37will. I'll go got into this apartment, and someone else did before her,
- 13:41someone else. Of course, your coat was stolen, wasn't it?
- 13:45Well, I suppose, but not from the apartment, signe not from where
- 13:48was it stolen from? I can't be sure, of course, but I
- 13:52gave that coat to the cleaning shop down the block about a week ago.
- 13:56Cleaning shop, what's the name of it? The car to cleaners? Why
- 14:00because evidently it started out from there to wind up on a murdered girl's body.
- 14:05Therefore, come on, we got them. Yes, believe it or
- 14:07not, I'm taking you to the gleaners. What oh LOI I thought I
- 14:26told you not to wait. This is a free country. There's a parking
- 14:28limited this maybe no, but I waited. But we're only going down the
- 14:33block a little bit. You can't afford a quarter. I like to walk.
- 14:39What do you get from walk? Exercise and from exercise an enlarged hot?
- 14:43From an enlarged hot, you know how many people each year dropped it?
- 14:46Add them up? We're walking. Come on, Francis Simon, you'll
- 14:52worry moderately about all those people with enlarged hearts. And this is the place.
- 14:58Yes, yes, front door, shepherd. There's a light inside.
- 15:03Let's tried. It's locked. However, I think someone's coming recognizing him.
- 15:13Yes, yes, that's mister Max and the manager. Oh what do you
- 15:16want? Do you mind if we come in? Look? It may have
- 15:20escaped your attention. But it happens to be after two o'clock in the morning.
- 15:24Why do you want to come out to the rain. It's not raining,
- 15:26but suppose it's starting. I happened to be a very tired ma'am.
- 15:28You should go home early. I shouldn't be bothered by drunks. I'm not
- 15:31drunk. We've stopped by for miss Blake's coat, the plaid. As I
- 15:37may have mentioned before, we are not open for business. And then what
- 15:41are you doing here? I am crazy about carbon tech mcloride fumes. I'd
- 15:45still like the coat. Oh, then please do stop buy in the morning?
- 15:52Simon, why did you I wanted to find out at the cleaning store.
- 15:54Knew the plaid coat was gone, but we didn't find out, did
- 15:58we. No. Nevertheless, we've read mister Maxim, Thank Heaven, Louise
- 16:02handy, Hey, Louis Louie, you give up? Uh into the cabs
- 16:11right well? Name your destination, mister templar a very long trip. Yeah,
- 16:18drive to the back of the cleaning store. You'll probably have to go
- 16:22around the block that Ali must lead there. Okay, but Simon, why
- 16:27are we going to the back of the store because we're going in? No,
- 16:32because I suspect mister Maxim is going out. All this here is maybe
- 16:47none of my business. It isn't. Oh you know, remark like that
- 16:49could easy hide a fella's feeling. I'm sorry, No, it didn't.
- 16:52I hit mine. I'm sorry still, but you're not spending this PM in
- 16:56the way a PM should be spent. Nonsense. So far, it's all
- 17:00been good cleaning fun, That's what I mean, Simon. Mister Maxon hasn't
- 17:03come out of the store yet. No, he may be coy. However,
- 17:07why should he have anything to do with anything? He shouldn't. But
- 17:11it's very possible that, Simon. Yeah, yeah, mister Maxon is shutting
- 17:15up shop, coming down the back alley, which confirmed something or else?
- 17:18You mean, if he weren't hiding something, he wouldn't use the back way.
- 17:22Perhaps we're far enough away from the alley for him not to notice,
- 17:26like he's turning the corner. Louis, I am alert, not for nothing?
- 17:29Was I a boy scout, although actually what I was a boy scout
- 17:34for was a certain girl scout. Hold it a minute. He's getting into
- 17:37that he's a villain. That's a convitible. Everybody knows only villain's right around
- 17:41in convitibles. He started, Louis we go, look Maxon stopping? Yeah,
- 18:03I better stop right here, Simon. He's going into that nightclub.
- 18:11Interesting place for a store manager to finish his evening's work. Let's go Francis.
- 18:15Leave me know how the floor show is. I'll be sure to Barker's
- 18:21bandbox. I've heard of the club, Yeah, and I've heard of Barker.
- 18:23Nothing complimentary either. Well, here it is, and then we go
- 18:30dark, crowded and needs ventilation. The floor show emphasis on shows over there?
- 18:37Yeah, ducking out a door near the piano. Let's follow in these
- 18:41shifty footsteps. Yeah. I hope nobody notices what's going on, or rather
- 18:45coming off. I don't think so. Oh it's so dark in this whole
- 18:53way. Yeah, I can't hear what it is. We can get a
- 18:56little closer. Wait a minute, I'll get me. Wait long enough.
- 19:00Wear the stone. I told you the girl, just know what you told
- 19:03me. Don't give me the stones. And I suppose you tell me where
- 19:07the stones are. I don't know where they are. Stones. Barker has
- 19:11got quite a reputation as a crook of various kinds. Stones are jewelry and
- 19:15unquestionably stolen jewelry. Having fun fellas well. I hope I didn't frighten you.
- 19:21Lady coming up behind you still knows people like this thatens here asthma.
- 19:25Yeah, this here's a rot. How cute. Could I see it?
- 19:32Yeah, I've got a fi How gratifying you? I mean he fell down?
- 19:38Come on? How it could happen to us in here? It would
- 19:42be fatal what they find. I know it's always a little nervous making well
- 20:00here we are, not yet I'm going in with you. No for safety?
- 20:06Oh you you think? Maybe just not taking any chances? Four year
- 20:15is all right? Living room, Francis, don't look across the room.
- 20:22I'll go Is back, But this time she's staying. What do you mean?
- 20:26I hope she wouldn't see her? She isn't beautiful anymore. No,
- 20:32just dead. I better phone the police. Wait, Simon, you know
- 20:37this thing started with Francis Blake being dead, but it wasn't Francis Blake.
- 20:41It was another thing. And then someone else got killed, Olga. Still
- 20:44not Francis Blake. But Simon, the next time, do you do you
- 20:48think maybe it will be? Come on, boys, let's get out of
- 21:06here. Good night, lieutenant, thanks for dropping on and exit except police
- 21:12Francis. Yes, Simon, you better go to bed. I'll stay on.
- 21:15It's almost morning anyway. Oh, I couldn't sleep. Would you like
- 21:19me to fix her some breakfast. I want to say, that's not a
- 21:22bad idea. If you feel up to I don't know how I feel.
- 21:26You stay right where you are. Don't take me more than a few minutes.
- 21:27All right, Okay, that's all that sound. You're gonna make,
- 21:37sister. The guns loaded. If you've got ideas about yelling for help,
- 21:40remember this. Bullets get to you quick. Goodn't help. Let's get out
- 21:44of here by the service door like I come in. But simon, boyfriend,
- 21:48you'll write them a letter from where you're going. If you're lucky,
- 21:52sister, and I hope you're lucky. You're too pretty to enjoy dying so
- 21:56quick. Francis, what are you cooking? Steak? Fred Fis? I
- 22:11don't intend to oversee you're cooking, Francis Francis. Oh here here's mister Barker.
- 22:32Yeah, nice work. Check Hi. I want to know what this
- 22:36is all about? Yeah? I bet you do? You want me both,
- 22:38buddy? What do you do with the stones? Stone? Yeah?
- 22:42Yeah, the chorus, Girl's Delight, the old Man's charm, the stones.
- 22:47Oh you mean jewels? I don't have any, maybe not on you,
- 22:49but you're gonna tell us where they are? Want you bubby suppose I
- 22:53don't know. I wouldn't care to believe that. Well, you'd better start
- 22:59because I don't know, all right, I'll start not believing you, Jake.
- 23:04Yeah, I don't believe her. I don't think she's behaving right,
- 23:10you don't, Uh, I don't. Okay, mister Barker, what what
- 23:18are you gonna do? I'm gonna slap you around a bit. It's gonna
- 23:21hurt you more than it hurts me too. Oh No, you can't want
- 23:25to bet all it? Ah in a minute, Jake, I'll get it.
- 23:30Yeah, Barker, who are you? Simon Templar? You've got Friendcis
- 23:34Blake. They haven't you. It's your phone girl. You must have listen.
- 23:37If you don't hurt her in any way, I'll get you the stones
- 23:41you're looking for. She doesn't know where they are. Matter fact, where
- 23:45are the stones the Carter cleaner shop? Look, don't have me that.
- 23:48We already been through the joint. You didn't know where to look. That
- 23:53could be a deal. Okay, your girlfriend will be under a gun all
- 23:59the time. First funny move and she gets it. Okay, Jake,
- 24:06we'll go and visiting. Maybe we'll trade in a bay for the stones.
- 24:10If the stones are headed over. If they ain't, we'll just trade around.
- 24:23Good morning, And oh you were here last night. That's right,
- 24:29mister Maxon. I was looking for a plaid coat. Plaid. Yes,
- 24:32maybe it would be here on this rack. Oh, it wouldn't be there.
- 24:33You'll see. This rack is for dressing, and this is for last
- 24:37night. Sorry to have upset you, mister Maxon. But company is coming
- 24:44and I've got to set the table for them. Joe looks clean. No
- 24:57blue uniforms around, Parker, Jake. Okay, here we go, Baby,
- 25:06I can walk. Yeah, I know, I know, but I
- 25:08enjoy your company. Simon, you know, Francis you Tempa. That's right.
- 25:18I stay next to me, sister. I better just locked the door.
- 25:23We won't be interrupted. All right. Where the stones they're in the
- 25:26place here, they must be. I don't like the sound of that.
- 25:30It could be a stall. What's that? And mister max And he fell
- 25:33down while he was pressing some suits or something. Yeah, get up,
- 25:37Mexican. Well yeah, oh oh hello, mister Barker. Oll right,
- 25:42Oh you don't have to talk that way, mister Barker. I can't help
- 25:45it. If the stones were stolen from me. If the woman double crossed
- 25:48me, this baby here, yeah, why don't you work her over mister
- 25:52Barker and her boyfriend. After all, they're the ones who killed og,
- 25:55aren't they. It was a narrow part of mine out. I like the
- 25:57kid. I sent her out the job. She got business. You got
- 26:00to cut your losses when you have to. I still want the stones,
- 26:04are you They are here, they have to be and find them. I've
- 26:07looked, but they're hidden cleverly. You sound like a guy up a tree.
- 26:11Mister in In just a couple of seconds, I'm gonna cut that tree
- 26:15down. Tree you wave in a tree. Suppose you wanted to hide a
- 26:18tree so you couldn't find it, where would you hide it? I ain't
- 26:22interested in hiding trees. You'd hide it in the forest, of course.
- 26:25Therefore, going through the place, I noticed Francis go through that dress rack,
- 26:30dress rack. Find a dress, any dress that doesn't seem to belong
- 26:34well, I I don't get it. Bosh, who wants to hide a
- 26:38tree? They just said something. I'm not sure what you mean, but
- 26:44this shop is in a pretty expensive neighborhood. All the dresses here are very
- 26:48good ones. Except this one. It's quite cheap, covered with cheap rhinestone.
- 26:52Let me have it. Yes, of course it doesn't belong here.
- 26:56Why is it here? Because it's a forest looks like a rag to me
- 27:00afore? And I suppose you take another look at some of the rhinestones on
- 27:04Hey. Most of the things sewing on that dress are cheap rhinestones, but
- 27:08among them are the genuine stones, the ones we've been looking for. What
- 27:14nice work, Max, I, I didn't know anything about it. Somebody
- 27:18else must have done the frame here? No, no, kid, Wait
- 27:22a minute, wait, wait, oh, what I'm gonna tell you something,
- 27:26Max? Noboy? You sure toning never did like a double crosser?
- 27:33Hey? Where you going? It occurred to me you mightn't like witnesses.
- 27:37I Frank just came behind me. Wait. Putting machines build up, quite
- 27:44a lot of them. Pressure. I kicked the outlet pipe off and it
- 27:47baged the jew and his tramp barker. Lets you want to get my boy?
- 27:53You're leaving its gosh, yes, Francis, but not for long.
- 28:03The police won't have much trouble picking them up. With them all, forgive
- 28:07me, but I can't resist us with them all steamed up. Simon,
- 28:23I'm terribly grateful, but I can't resist Francis asking you what it was all
- 28:30about. Oh, oh, an intellectual When you see, Francis, Maxan
- 28:36and Baker were partners in the jewelry business, illegitimate. They worked out a
- 28:40nice idea. They'd used very distinctive clothes left with the cleaning shop as disguises
- 28:45for themselves and their confederates. Oh and disguises which couldn't be traced because they'd
- 28:49lead back only to perfectly innocent people who had alibis and everything right. And
- 28:55the last job they did involved a girl who wore your plaid coat while stealing
- 28:57the jewels, and however, decided he wanted all the jewels for himself,

- 31:19Well a cute title that they managed to justify within the story. The
- 31:25solution to the case as to how the original murders were solved seemed a little
- 31:30bit simple, but in the writer's defense, they did build a lot of
- 31:34levels of complexity into the episode itself, b Rhamps. All they had left
- 31:40was just a pretty simple solution to tie in all the action and comedy and
- 31:45such they had in the course of the show. All right, Well,
- 31:48briefly onto listener comments and feedback, and just a brief comment from Kathy Are
- 31:56expressing appreciation for episode fourteen forty nine. Santa Claus is no Saint, as
- 32:01she just says, simply a great episode. Well, thanks so much,
- 32:05Kathy, do appreciate your comment. Now. I did mention I would get
- 32:08into when the shows are recorded, just you know, people are curious if,
- 32:14for example, it seems like it's taking a while for a comment to
- 32:17appear. I generally record shows between eight and ten days before the actual release
- 32:27date when I do the commentary. For example, I'm recording this on December
- 32:31the twenty seventh, release on January sixth, and I also do a Crime
- 32:37in Peter Chambers the same day, and then I don't usually have another recording
- 32:42day until Tuesday, and I record what Marlow and Nick Carter. Then on
- 32:47Wednesday, I record yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and on Thursday, I
- 32:52record right now. And generally, like specials that we do on Sunday,
- 32:59those get recorded on Mondays. So in case you were wondering, there you
- 33:02go. We addressed it all right. Well, we'll be back tomorrow with
- 33:06Crime and Peter Chambers. In the meantime, sender comments to Box thirteen at
