- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Thursday, it is the 2nd of
- 0:18May and I'm so delighted that you have invited me into
- 0:22whatever your day is looking like.
- 0:25It can be such a challenge right in the business of our lives to
- 0:29work out how do we fit in the important stuff, how do we do
- 0:32the things that we know are really good for us.
- 0:34And this this is a great way we get to do it right.
- 0:37We get to come together, we get to be part of this community, we
- 0:40get to hear God's Word and we get to realign ourselves with
- 0:45the rhythm of Scripture. And I know that some of you had
- 0:48said to me that you have found it so hard over the years to try
- 0:51and get into a consistent habit of Bible reading, but that this
- 0:55has been a way that has really worked for you.
- 0:57And if that is you, friend, I am just so delighted because I
- 1:01would have gifted is to be able to do this each day reading guys
- 1:05word. And if your life is just so
- 1:07hectic that you find it hard to do this every day, but you're
- 1:09kind of dip in and out from time to time or you kind of binge a
- 1:13number of days together, that doesn't matter.
- 1:16I'm just so delighted that you are opening up God's Word with
- 1:20myself and with all of us, because in each time that we do
- 1:23this, God promises that His Word will not return empty.
- 1:27So we do not just read a book, but we hear the words of a
- 1:31living God. Words that are alive and true
- 1:36and will teach us something today of who God is and what God
- 1:40has for us. Joy.
- 1:42What a privilege. What a blessed, blessed people
- 1:46we are. So let's do it, shall we?
- 1:48Let us continue reading through the story of Second Samuel,
- 1:52Chapter 19. Word soon reach Joab that the
- 2:05king was weeping and mourning for Absalom.
- 2:08As all the people heard of the King's deep grief for his son.
- 2:12The joy of that day's victory was turned into deep sadness.
- 2:16They crept back into the town that day as though they were
- 2:18ashamed and had deserted in battle.
- 2:21The king covered his face with his hands and kept on crying.
- 2:25Oh my son. Absalom.
- 2:28Oh, Absalom, my son. My son.
- 2:32Then Joab went to the King's room and said to him, we've
- 2:35saved your life today and the lives of your sons, your
- 2:38daughters and your wives and concubines.
- 2:41Yet you act like this, making us feel ashamed of ourselves.
- 2:45You seem to love those who hate you and hate those who love you.
- 2:49You have made it clear today that your commanders and trips
- 2:52mean nothing to you, and it seems that if Absalom had lived
- 2:56and all of us had died, you would be pleased.
- 2:59Now go out there and congratulate your troops, For I
- 3:03swear by the Lord that if you don't go out, not a single one
- 3:07of them will remain here tonight.
- 3:09Then you'll be worse off than ever before, said the king went
- 3:14out and took his seat at the town gate, and as the news
- 3:18spread throughout the town that he was there, everyone went to
- 3:21him. Meanwhile, the Israelites who
- 3:24had supported Absalom fled to their homes and throughout all
- 3:27the tribes of Israel. There was much discussion and
- 3:30argument going on. The people were saying the king
- 3:34rescued us from our enemies and saved us from the Philistines,
- 3:38but Absalom chased him out of the country.
- 3:41Now Absalom, who we anointed to rule over us, is dead.
- 3:45Why not ask David to come back and be our king again?
- 3:49Then King David sent Zadok and Abiathar the priests, to say to
- 3:53the elders of Judah, why are you the last ones to welcome back
- 3:57the king into his palace? For I have heard that all Israel
- 4:01is ready. You are my relatives, my own
- 4:04tribe, my own flesh and blood. So why are you the last ones to
- 4:09welcome back? The King and David told them to
- 4:13tell Amassa. Since you are my own flesh and
- 4:16blood, like Joab, May God strike me and even kill me if I do not
- 4:21appoint you as commander of my army in his place.
- 4:25Then Amassa convinced all the men of Judah and they responded
- 4:30unanimously. They sent word to the King.
- 4:33Return to us and bring back all who are with you.
- 4:38So the king started back to Jerusalem, and when he arrived
- 4:41at the Jordan River, the people of Judah came to Gilgal to meet
- 4:45him and escort him across the river.
- 4:48Shimei, son of Guerra, the man from Bahram in Benjamin, hurried
- 4:52across with the men of Judah to welcome King David. 1000 Other
- 4:57men from the tribe of Benjamin were with him, including Ziba,
- 5:00the chief servant of the House of Saul, and Zippy's 15 sons and
- 5:0420 servants. They rushed down to the Jordan
- 5:07to meet the king. They crossed the shallows of the
- 5:10Jordan to bring the King's household across the river,
- 5:12helping him in every way they could.
- 5:16As the king was about to cross the river, Shemale fell down
- 5:19before him. My Lord the king, please forgive
- 5:24me, he pleaded. Forget the terrible thing your
- 5:27servant did when you left Jerusalem.
- 5:29May the king put it out of his mind.
- 5:32I know how much I've sinned. That is why I've come here
- 5:35today, the very first person in all Israel to greet my Lord, the
- 5:40king. Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said
- 5:44Shimi should die, but he cursed the Lords anointed king who
- 5:49asked your opinion? You sons of Zeruiah?
- 5:52David exclaimed. Why have you become my adversary
- 5:55today? This is not a day for execution,
- 5:58for today I am once again the king of Israel.
- 6:02Then turning to Shimei, David vowed.
- 6:05Your life will be spared. Now.
- 6:09Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, came down from Jerusalem to meet
- 6:13the king. He had not cared for his feet,
- 6:16trimmed his beard, or washed his clothes since the day the king
- 6:19left Jerusalem. Why didn't you come with me,
- 6:22Mephibosheth? The king asked him.
- 6:24My fitchett replied. My Lord the king, my servant
- 6:29Ziba deceived me. I told him, saddle my donkey so
- 6:33I can go with the king. For as you know, I'm crippled.
- 6:37Siba has slandered me by saying that I refuse to come.
- 6:41But I know that my Lord the king is like an Angel of God.
- 6:44So do what you think is best. All my relatives and I could
- 6:48expect only death from you, my Lord.
- 6:50But instead you have honoured me by allowing me to eat at your
- 6:54own table. What more can I ask?
- 6:57You've said enough, David replied.
- 7:00I've decided that you and Zebo will divide your land equally
- 7:04between you. Give him all of it, Mephibosheth
- 7:07said. I'm content just to have you
- 7:10safely back again, my Lord. The King Barzilai of Gilead had
- 7:15come down from Magellan to escort the king across the
- 7:17Jordan. He was very old, 80 years of age
- 7:21and very wealthy. He was the one who had provided
- 7:25food for the king during his stay in Maha name.
- 7:28Come across with me and live in Jerusalem, the king said to
- 7:32Barzilai. I will take care of you there.
- 7:35No, he replied. I am far too old to go with the
- 7:40king to Jerusalem. I'm 80 years old today and I can
- 7:44no longer enjoy anything. Food and wine are no longer
- 7:48tasty, and I cannot hear the singers as they sing.
- 7:52I would only be a burden to my Lord the King.
- 7:56Just to go across the Jordan River with the king is all the
- 7:59honour I need. Then let me return again to die
- 8:03in my own town where my father and mother are buried.
- 8:07But here is your servant, my son, Kim Ham.
- 8:11Let him go with my Lord, the King, and receive whatever you
- 8:14want to give him. Good.
- 8:17The King agreed. Kim Ham will go with me and I
- 8:21will help him in any way you would like, and I will do for
- 8:24you anything you want. So all the people crossed the
- 8:28Jordan with the king. After David had blessed Barzilai
- 8:32and kissed him, Barzilai returned to his own home.
- 8:36The king then crossed over to Gilgal, taking Kim Ham with him.
- 8:41All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel escorted
- 8:45the king on his way, but all the men of Israel complained to the
- 8:49king. The men of Judah stole the king
- 8:53and didn't give us the honour of helping.
- 8:54Take you, your household and all your men across the Jordan.
- 8:58The men of Judah replied. The King is one of our own
- 9:02kingsmen. Why should this make you angry?
- 9:05We haven't eaten any of the King's food or received any
- 9:08special favours, but there are 10 tribes of Israel, the others
- 9:12replied. So we have 10 times as much
- 9:15right to the king as you do. What right do you have to treat
- 9:19us with such contempt? Weren't we the 1st to speak of
- 9:22bringing him back to be our king?
- 9:24Again, the argument continued back and forth, and the men of
- 9:29Judah spoke even more harshly than the men of Israel our Lord,
- 9:43as we read this chapter. It's just so full of arguments
- 9:48and betrayal and lies and untruths being wrapped up as
- 9:54truth. How on earth do we navigate our
- 9:57way through this life, Lord, when the politics around us can
- 10:02just become overwhelming and just so disheartening, Lord?
- 10:08You show us a better way. You show us a way of love, of
- 10:15uncomplicated, unconditional love, of saying the dignity of
- 10:22each person, seeing them as created children, children of
- 10:28the Most High God who loves them.
- 10:31Well, Lord, I just thank you for showing us a better way.
- 10:36I thank you for the lens that you give us to see our lives
- 10:40through and the way that that shines.
- 10:42Your character, your uncomplicated character.
- 10:47You're a good, good father, and so worthy of our adoration and
- 10:54our trust and our praise. For you are good all the way to
- 10:59your core and back out again. So we submit to you our good
- 11:04God. We love you and we praise you,
- 11:08and we want to be more like you, so we pray all these things in
- 11:12the name of your Son. I'm in.
