- 0:35Speaker 1: I t E dot com. All rightybody, welcome to the
- 0:40Speaker 1: white Tail Week episode. It's like Shark Week, but better,
- 0:45Speaker 1: even more dangerous. Uh and they see you. I think
- 0:50Speaker 1: I'm throwing out stray superlatives here, but this is the
- 0:52Speaker 1: honest truth. The best archer in the whole wide world
- 0:58Speaker 1: is here, not like not like when you have a
- 1:01Speaker 1: guy on he got like the biggest buck, but in America,
- 1:05Speaker 1: not like that. It's like the best archers here, Levi Morgan.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I guess so well.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It's not even a debatable point right now.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I mean, it depends on who you ask. If you
- 1:18Speaker 2: ask some of my competitors, they'd probably argue that, but
- 1:21Speaker 2: but you beat them sometimes.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Listen. It's just we're just gonna run with this. It's
- 1:26Speaker 1: the best impounding the table, the best archer in the
- 1:30Speaker 1: world is here. Who I just found out I don't
- 1:34Speaker 1: know till this morning that Levi Morgan's wife is a
- 1:37Speaker 1: competitive archer and they shot. They played against each other
- 1:40Speaker 1: at when they were nine. Yeah, she wouldn't give them
- 1:43Speaker 1: the time of day.
- 1:44Speaker 2: No, she wouldn't. I even called one of the organizations
- 1:46Speaker 2: and like tried to get her number, and they wouldn't
- 1:48Speaker 2: give it to me. So then, uh, but when I
- 1:52Speaker 2: when I I quit in high school and when I
- 1:54Speaker 2: came back in two thousand and six, she was the
- 1:57Speaker 2: reigning women's pro World champion at the time. What mm hmm.
- 2:02Speaker 2: So then we started dating after that, But then you
- 2:05Speaker 2: finally won her heart finally. Uh, she's still in it now.
- 2:10Speaker 2: She was we started. She competed until about four years
- 2:14Speaker 2: ago when we had our five years ago we had
- 2:17Speaker 2: our second child.
- 2:19Speaker 1: God, and then she just kind of things got a
- 2:20Speaker 1: little tough.
- 2:21Speaker 2: She just wanted to be mom.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So you guys got four kids, four Yeah, we're gonna
- 2:26Speaker 1: dig it into all that. We're gonna dig into what
- 2:27Speaker 1: it takes to be the best archer in the world.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And also the thing I'm interested is how that translates
- 2:34Speaker 1: to hitting white tails.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Okay, it's probably a big difference. There's a big, big difference.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I've heard you talk about. We're gonna talk
- 2:41Speaker 1: about that also, Nick Pinazota, am I saying this right? Penizada?
- 2:46Speaker 1: That's Italian? Italian? Yes, good, we're brothers from the National
- 2:50Speaker 1: Deer Association, who you guys have heard us talk about
- 2:52Speaker 1: handful of times. He's also here. He's gonna talk about
- 2:54Speaker 1: an upcoming film that his organization did with various state
- 3:00Speaker 1: wildlife agencies about white tail deer. White tail deer Management
- 3:04Speaker 1: hit us with a couple points about that film.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's nothing like this has ever really been done.
- 3:09Speaker 3: A lot of people take whitetail deer and deer hunting
- 3:13Speaker 3: for granted, and the reality is there are a lot
- 3:15Speaker 3: of challenges and when you look at the amount of
- 3:18Speaker 3: money that deer generate for all species conservation, even threatening
- 3:21Speaker 3: endangered species, it's huge. The eight out of ten people
- 3:25Speaker 3: that buy a hunting license hunt deer. The next closest
- 3:28Speaker 3: is turkey, like three out of ten.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so when you add turkey, elk, you know, another species,
- 3:35Speaker 3: it's still not half a white tail. So yeah, the
- 3:38Speaker 3: film seeks to get this in front of people. Deer hunters,
- 3:41Speaker 3: first of all, who have most of them have no
- 3:42Speaker 3: idea about that. But you know, suburbanites too, people that
- 3:46Speaker 3: care about any wildlife need to understand that if it
- 3:48Speaker 3: weren't for deer, the management of those species would be
- 3:52Speaker 3: in trouble.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Now, you know Jim half a Finger.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Oh, we just spend some time with him in Calgary
- 3:57Speaker 3: this week.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yep, he's going to write a thing about him. I'm in.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Uh Dirk and Pat Dirk and the white Tail writer
- 4:03Speaker 1: are insistent that you now and then at least nod
- 4:07Speaker 1: towards saying white tailed deer not white tails. White tails
- 4:14Speaker 1: is a colloquialism. It's the it's the white tailed deer.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Do you really sound like you know what you're talking
- 4:22Speaker 1: about when you run around saying I like to hunt
- 4:26Speaker 1: white tailed deer.
- 4:28Speaker 3: My wife just that's how he likes it A hard
- 4:30Speaker 3: time about that exact thing before I left.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So yes, and you got to put the hyphen in there.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I do it with a pause. The White Tailed Deer
- 4:42Speaker 1: Live Tour, I'm pitching. I'll just pitching uh Levitt Morgan
- 4:46Speaker 1: on our live tour date that we have coming up
- 4:50Speaker 1: in Uh, you're closer to Pittsburgh, right, Yeah, in Pittsburgh
- 4:54Speaker 1: and Chester. If I'm understanding right, you're in for all shows.
- 4:57Speaker 4: I just uh, just as of this morning, chatted with Katie.
- 5:01Speaker 4: You confirmed and I confirmed.
- 5:03Speaker 1: So our live tour has mainly become a Chester concert.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I already the minute Chester when I found out that
- 5:09Speaker 1: you were gonna be able to open at all the
- 5:11Speaker 1: shows and play music at all the live shows. My
- 5:14Speaker 1: first call he didn't pick up the phone, was the
- 5:17Speaker 1: Hunter Spencer, because I want him to make a Chester
- 5:19Speaker 1: concert t shirt like the old style that has the
- 5:23Speaker 1: dates listed on the back.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Wow, that's big, So.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You gotta get we need it. Can you take a
- 5:28Speaker 1: picture of him with his glasses on? Something with his
- 5:31Speaker 1: lave glasses. This can be the this is gonna be
- 5:33Speaker 1: your concert shirt.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Badass, be emblazoned on the side of the tour bus.
- 5:41Speaker 1: If he can have do you have your guitar? If
- 5:43Speaker 1: you can hold your guitar and have those those rubber
- 5:45Speaker 1: goggles on, it'd be a great concert.
- 5:47Speaker 4: T shirt standing next to this thing.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Chester. So December sixth to seventeen is the live show
- 5:55Speaker 1: we're doing. This is the order of dates. Now we
- 5:57Speaker 1: take a day off here and there. I wish I
- 5:59Speaker 1: had it all lined up up. Denver is December sixth,
- 6:04Speaker 1: Kansas City is December seven, Pearl Harbor Anniversary, but that's
- 6:12Speaker 1: nothing to do with the show. Davenport, Iowa. Then we
- 6:16Speaker 1: go on to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Oh, this is in order.
- 6:23Speaker 1: This is the most messed up list I've ever seen
- 6:24Speaker 1: in my life. Where's Detroit?
- 6:28Speaker 5: I put et cetera?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Come on, this is like I supposed to announce a
- 6:35Speaker 1: tour with et cetera. This is only eight. You quit
- 6:39Speaker 1: at like one. There's there's five six. Et Cetera is
- 6:43Speaker 1: too the crin shows not to include.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Okay, what what are we missing there? There's the Pittsburgh there's.
- 6:50Speaker 1: No there's no show in Illinois.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I can name it.
- 6:55Speaker 6: You can find all of these on the me dot com.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Right now, we've got Denver in the Mission ball room.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Great, this is what I'm talking Gotchester.
- 7:05Speaker 4: We got Kansas City at the Folly Theater December.
- 7:10Speaker 1: That's December seventh, December.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Sixth, December ninth at the Capitol Theater in Davenport. Okay,
- 7:20Speaker 4: we've got them.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Great job.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Then Kalamazoo December tenth State Theater at the Kalamazoo State Theater.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We did State Theater before, and I've been there and
- 7:30Speaker 1: as I told the story many times, I've been there
- 7:32Speaker 1: before and I saw I think he's passed away. This
- 7:37Speaker 1: would be a good person for dead or Alive. Dylan
- 7:40Speaker 1: died or is he not dead, Bob Dylton, he's alive,
- 7:44Speaker 1: that'd be a great person for the game Dead or Alive.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I saw Bob Dylan there at the State Theater WOW
- 7:50Speaker 1: a long time ago, and then we did a we
- 7:53Speaker 1: did a live show there years ago. In twenty nineteen.
- 7:55Speaker 1: We did a live show there.
- 7:56Speaker 4: It's a I think it's a pretty interesting great theater.
- 8:00Speaker 4: It was kind of like, I don't know, it's all
- 8:03Speaker 4: decorated up. It's the one that I'm thinking.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Of if I had more time, I tell you a
- 8:06Speaker 1: good story about something to happen at that theater with
- 8:09Speaker 1: my late friend Eric Kern.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Go on December eleventh, Detroit at the Royal Oak Music
- 8:15Speaker 4: Theater in Michigan. There and then we've got Cleveland on
- 8:21Speaker 4: December thirteenth.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You know who's going to join us for the Cleveland show.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I'm lining up like local guests. That's why I'm pitching
- 8:28Speaker 1: Levi Morgan on it for the ones you haven't got
- 8:30Speaker 1: to yet. Yeah, you know who we got for who
- 8:32Speaker 1: I was just talking to for the to see if
- 8:35Speaker 1: he'll come to the Cleveland show.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I think I've got a guess, A good guess who
- 8:39Speaker 4: we got weights and fish the Walleye got.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah, ye, I'm gonna I might bring him his own
- 8:44Speaker 1: jersey and he can put his own jersey on. Jason Fisher.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I was pitching it. I was pitching him on this
- 8:50Speaker 1: idea of the other day. So I think hopefully we
- 8:52Speaker 1: get him at the Cleveland show.
- 8:54Speaker 4: That'd be awesome.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Kevin Murphy, World's greatest small game hunter. He wants he
- 8:58Speaker 1: wants to throw in on Cleveland, so he'll be on
- 9:00Speaker 1: stage at Cleveland.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Ok.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Great, Yeah, are we going to get an extra day
- 9:05Speaker 4: in there to actually fish.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Or I have to look at the layout. Then keep
- 9:08Speaker 1: going on?
- 9:09Speaker 4: All right, Pittsburgh. That is December.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Fourteenth, what's Cleveland? What day is Cleveland? Chess has got
- 9:19Speaker 1: those cheap rubber for you people listening. Chess has got
- 9:21Speaker 1: those cheap rubber safety glasses because he's gonna tell us,
- 9:25Speaker 1: He's gonna tell us just how tender a white tail
- 9:27Speaker 1: fawn is everybody knows they're tender, but how tender.
- 9:31Speaker 4: We're going to tell you that's Cleveland is December thirteenth
- 9:36Speaker 4: at the Agora Theater. And then what's the next day,
- 9:40Speaker 4: December fourteenth.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And that is there's no there's no day to walleye
- 9:44Speaker 1: fish gotcha. We'd have to get up early in the
- 9:47Speaker 1: morning and fish Walleyes. We'll figure it out.
- 9:53Speaker 4: December fourteenth, we're in one Hall, Pennsylvania.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's the Greater Philadelphia area. No, the Greater Pittsburgh are
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's the Greater Pittsburgh area. Mess that up every time,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and that's when I'm trying to That's when we're trying
- 10:08Speaker 1: to get Levi Morgan to come on stage and shoot
- 10:09Speaker 1: his bow. You know, Nugent got in trouble for that.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Did he really in Ohio not Pennsylvania? Because he used
- 10:17Speaker 1: to do the Whiplash Bash and we used to like
- 10:20Speaker 1: I well, I went to the Whiplash Bash one time
- 10:23Speaker 1: with my late friend Eric Kern, and Uncle Ted threw
- 10:27Speaker 1: a bunch of jerky out into the crowd and I
- 10:29Speaker 1: picked a piece of that jerky yup off the floor
- 10:31Speaker 1: and me and Eric shared it, and uh, he would
- 10:34Speaker 1: shoot his bow. He would shoot his bow on stage,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and then he goes into Ohio and gets discharging a
- 10:40Speaker 1: weapon within city limits.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You're kidding me, No, but we'll see you.
- 10:43Speaker 1: But well, we'll talk about whether or not. We'll have
- 10:46Speaker 1: various audience members hold up little targets and LEVI I'll
- 10:50Speaker 1: shoot those targets. So we have to check insurance adjusters.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Or maybe Chester could do like an apple on his head.
- 10:58Speaker 1: We'll figure it out.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Keep going December fifteenth in Philadelphia at the Kenswick Theater
- 11:07Speaker 4: that's in Glenn'side, Pennsylvania, December fifteenth.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And when the show opens, everybody will come in. The
- 11:14Speaker 1: show's gonna open. The show's gonna with some music by Chester,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and then we'll get the show started.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what kind of music
- 11:19Speaker 4: I should play.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna be very heavily involved in that decision. Speaking
- 11:25Speaker 1: of live shows, this is the most important one I want,
- 11:28Speaker 1: like at least like consulting on it.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Sure, I've got I've got some good ideas for specific cities.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's is Clay going to join on stage?
- 11:37Speaker 5: Because after that thing you posted it on instag?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, do you think you can maybe play with Clay
- 11:41Speaker 1: a little bit, because Clay's coming to show will be
- 11:45Speaker 1: there forever like like, uh, Chester will be there for
- 11:47Speaker 1: every show. Yannis is there for every show. We're lining
- 11:50Speaker 1: up Gas. We got Jordan Budd coming to a show.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna start working phones. Kevin Murphy's throwing down
- 11:56Speaker 1: on two shows he's coming to, so he'll be on
- 11:57Speaker 1: stage for a couple of shows. The shows occur in sections.
- 12:01Speaker 1: All shows will have a trivia component for audience, give
- 12:05Speaker 1: audience chances to win stuff. All shows will have a
- 12:08Speaker 1: Chester component. But the most important thing, this is the
- 12:11Speaker 1: most important live thing. Phil, Yes, tell him about your
- 12:17Speaker 1: song and dance routine. Well, no, he's in a fills in.
- 12:21Speaker 7: So Phil's a thespian, incredibly amateur. Hey, I just do
- 12:26Speaker 7: it for fun.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Well no I did, But I learned the other day
- 12:29Speaker 1: that Phil makes a little jingle on this stuff occasionally. Yeah. Yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 1: he's a he's a he's a like a what's what's
- 12:35Speaker 1: what sits between amateur and pro semi pro or semi amateur.
- 12:45Speaker 1: He's a semi pro thespian. Yeah, yeah, that's right. I'm
- 12:49Speaker 1: doing a little the little play. This just in three weeks.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Three weeks.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, uh, so you guys are doing Phil's doing a comedy.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Phil's always involved in some in community theater of some sort.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Is it fair to call it community theater.
- 13:05Speaker 7: I'd say, like local, yeah, community. Yeah, there's a bunch
- 13:08Speaker 7: of different things. I mean I just started doing it
- 13:10Speaker 7: last year just for fun, because my kid's getting into theater.
- 13:12Speaker 7: So I auditioned with him kind of to make him
- 13:14Speaker 7: feel comfortable. That wasn't the first thing you did well
- 13:16Speaker 7: since college? Yeah, first thing in like ten years.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm talking about the casts over. You buy
- 13:20Speaker 1: a ticket and go down. I mean it's a professional production.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yeah sure, yeah, Yeah, I buy a ticket. They're going
- 13:24Speaker 1: to see your kids.
- 13:25Speaker 7: Like, there are ushers, you can buy some play, you
- 13:28Speaker 7: can buy some house wine in the lobby.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Drake wine. You gotta buy. You gotta pay to see him.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So Phil's doing this, Yeah, and he's doing that right now.
- 13:35Speaker 1: He's doing a comedy. Yeahs Ellen Theater. And we did
- 13:37Speaker 1: a live show at the Ellen Theater before.
- 13:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I was not there. I think I was before
- 13:41Speaker 7: I started working here.
- 13:42Speaker 1: But so Phil's doing this. If you're a team, I
- 13:44Speaker 1: get a nineteen thirty slapstick comedy.
- 13:46Speaker 7: Yeah, it's called you Can't Take It with You. It's
- 13:47Speaker 7: a great cast. Yeah, I mean, And then also met
- 13:52Speaker 7: our tickets on sale? Yeah, tickets are on sale.
- 13:55Speaker 5: And when when are the shows? It's the end of October.
- 13:57Speaker 7: Starts October twentieth and runs for two weekends. This information
- 14:01Speaker 7: applies for people who live in Bozeman and are into
- 14:04Speaker 7: community theater. So no, I'm not sure the percentage of
- 14:06Speaker 7: your audience.
- 14:07Speaker 1: What I like about is this is that time of
- 14:09Speaker 1: year and when you got like a lot of rotten
- 14:11Speaker 1: tomatoes in your garden, you know, Oh that seasons winding down.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I got one on, I got one, I got setting
- 14:17Speaker 1: off to the side for Phil. I didn't bring down
- 14:21Speaker 1: down on the show. No, it'd be good. How much
- 14:23Speaker 1: are there still tickets left? How much our tickets? Phil?
- 14:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I think tickets started around either like upper twenties,
- 14:30Speaker 7: early thirties. That's not how you talk about prices, low thirties,
- 14:33Speaker 7: not talking about the year.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You know, I'm talking about Chester. Now you're talking about
- 14:37Speaker 1: the Uh yeah, so go go down in support Phil.
- 14:40Speaker 1: When Phil steps out, it's a comedy, so I think
- 14:42Speaker 1: you could probably applaud and Phil steps out.
- 14:44Speaker 7: No, yeah, please please do. I desperately need it because
- 14:47Speaker 7: I definitely don't get that attention around this office.
- 14:49Speaker 1: What were you? What were you? What's your costume?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Oh?
- 14:52Speaker 7: I took a buttoned up suit. I think my character
- 14:54Speaker 7: comes home from like a ballet. So we're all we're
- 14:56Speaker 7: dressed up to the nines.
- 14:58Speaker 1: And people will recognize you. I think so you will.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I'm not wearing a masker deformed like I'm not playing
- 15:03Speaker 7: John Merrick or anything.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Got it? So go support Phil? Uh here's a topic
- 15:09Speaker 1: meet either podcast saves lives. Now, this is incredible.
- 15:12Speaker 5: We haven't hit this in a while. We haven't saved
- 15:14Speaker 5: a life in a while.
- 15:15Speaker 1: But no, but we don't know. We should have like
- 15:17Speaker 1: a thing where we track how many lives we saved,
- 15:20Speaker 1: because what was another life? We saved tourniquets, multiple tournique
- 15:23Speaker 1: because we had we had an emergency room doctor on
- 15:27Speaker 1: just imploring people to carry tourniquets. And then we did
- 15:32Speaker 1: the Campfire Story's close calls about tourniquets and and a
- 15:36Speaker 1: number of people wrote in either that they it informed
- 15:42Speaker 1: how they applied tourniquets or at least they got a tourniquet.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Now we did what was that episode we did about
- 15:47Speaker 1: the guy that got stuck in the toilet vault? An
- 15:50Speaker 1: American hero and a stuck man. Yep, what was this show?
- 15:54Speaker 5: Was the Great Toilet Rescue, an American Hero, a stuck man,
- 16:00Speaker 5: and something something I forgot the rest of that.
- 16:04Speaker 1: We had some folks on the show who had rescued
- 16:07Speaker 1: a man from a toilet vault where he climbed down
- 16:11Speaker 1: there to get his phone out and got stuck. This
- 16:14Speaker 1: led to a lot of people writing in about other
- 16:17Speaker 1: situations where people have gone into toilet vaults at boat
- 16:21Speaker 1: launches and got stuck in the vault. A state trooper
- 16:25Speaker 1: from Michigan wrote.
- 16:27Speaker 5: In, No, but this was recent because that episode was like.
- 16:31Speaker 1: No, no, this is fresh news. This is like hot news.
- 16:33Speaker 1: This is hot news.
- 16:36Speaker 4: It's so baffling to me.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Well, okay, I am a trooper with Michigan State Police.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Here's so if you get pulled over Michigan for speed,
- 16:43Speaker 1: and it's probably this guy. Uh, he says. Today a
- 16:46Speaker 1: d NR officer, my sergeant, and I were dispatched to
- 16:49Speaker 1: a boat launch within my post area. So they get
- 16:53Speaker 1: an emergency call from a boat launch. He his sergeant
- 16:56Speaker 1: and a d NR officer aka game Ward and get dispass.
- 17:01Speaker 1: It was reported. This is him telling the story. It
- 17:03Speaker 1: was reported that someone was yelling for help one of
- 17:07Speaker 1: the post detective sergeants. He's getting mighty technically, I don't
- 17:11Speaker 1: know what that. I guess that's a cop. One of
- 17:13Speaker 1: the post detextans sergeants was in the area. He responded
- 17:17Speaker 1: and located a woman who was stuck in the septic
- 17:20Speaker 1: pit of the outhouse at the boat launch boat. It
- 17:24Speaker 1: turns out people are gonna be laughing. It turns out
- 17:26Speaker 1: that the boat launch septic pits eat people at an
- 17:30Speaker 1: alarming rate. What was she trying to fetch her Apple Watch?
- 17:35Speaker 1: And it's like there should be a there could be
- 17:38Speaker 1: a class action suit against Apple because it's iPhones and
- 17:42Speaker 1: now at Apple watch that these people are trying to
- 17:44Speaker 1: dig out of there. She had dropped her Apple Watch
- 17:49Speaker 1: into the septic pit. Now she was able to enter.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Here's where the life saving comes in. She entered through
- 17:57Speaker 1: the toilet seat down in there. Okay, got her watch,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but couldn't get back out. Start screaming for helping a neighbor.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Hears her cries. Now the first responders. This is back
- 18:13Speaker 1: to the narration from the state trooper. The first responders
- 18:16Speaker 1: on scene were trying to figure out how they could
- 18:18Speaker 1: get her back out of the septic pit through the
- 18:20Speaker 1: toilet seat. Now listen careful now. Then he goes on
- 18:25Speaker 1: to say this quote. Thankfully, I had listened to the
- 18:29Speaker 1: episode of the podcast when you talked about a similar situation.
- 18:33Speaker 1: To everyone's surprise, I was able to remove the toilet.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And this is an important part. When you're stuck in
- 18:41Speaker 1: a vault, a toilet vault, go down in there and
- 18:44Speaker 1: get your stuff, and when it's time to come out,
- 18:47Speaker 1: that whole pedestal. As we learned on that episode, that
- 18:51Speaker 1: pedestal is removable. So all these people stuck in all
- 18:55Speaker 1: these toilets, it's unnecessary. If you realize that the pedestal
- 18:59Speaker 1: is removable, you do not try to need to fit
- 19:02Speaker 1: up out through the seat. I'm just trying to He
- 19:05Speaker 1: astonishes his colleagues by removing the pedestal, She's able to
- 19:10Speaker 1: hop right out of there.
- 19:11Speaker 6: So I just googled.
- 19:12Speaker 8: An Apple watch cost between like three hundred and six
- 19:15Speaker 8: hundred dollars, Like, you could not pay me that much
- 19:19Speaker 8: to touch that blue goo?
- 19:22Speaker 1: No, I would, It's not just blue goop.
- 19:25Speaker 6: Well, you know that's what everything's swimming in. Like there.
- 19:30Speaker 2: You don't have.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Children, no, your your relationship with your relationship with fecal
- 19:35Speaker 1: matter changes so much kids, And.
- 19:37Speaker 6: I've never changed a diaper. I have a niece.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It goes from like it just it goes from something
- 19:42Speaker 1: that's just a no go to being like it's not pleasant.
- 19:45Speaker 1: But I mean it's not the end of the world.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It's kind of the attitude you get. I would.
- 19:49Speaker 7: I think it's different with your own kids, though, you
- 19:52Speaker 7: learn how.
- 19:52Speaker 2: To walk through your house like this to the bathroom, Yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 2: don't touch anything.
- 19:56Speaker 8: I feel like adult fecal matter has to be different
- 20:00Speaker 8: then like children it's different.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 1: But when I hear someone getting mauled, or when I
- 20:05Speaker 1: hear someone getting gored by a buffalo in the park,
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, I see that. When I hear someone
- 20:11Speaker 1: get stuck in the toilet vaul because their phone, I'm like, yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I can see that. But could just be it's not
- 20:16Speaker 1: It's not the cost, it's the inconvenience.
- 20:20Speaker 8: If you're on the road, what does your Apple watch
- 20:23Speaker 8: even do that you need to survive?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Like, but I think of it as her phone.
- 20:30Speaker 5: I think I think we should also just point out
- 20:33Speaker 5: that the Michigan State Police put out a news release.
- 20:36Speaker 5: M hm, you know, so, I guess this gets This
- 20:39Speaker 5: goes out to all uh to all state police and
- 20:45Speaker 5: detailing the situation. But then just at the end, there's
- 20:48Speaker 5: another public service announce announcement. If you lose an item
- 20:52Speaker 5: in an outhouse toilet, do not attempt to venture inside
- 20:55Speaker 5: the containment area. Serious injury may occur. So for people
- 21:00Speaker 5: who didn't watch the listen to the first episode of
- 21:02Speaker 5: this podcast, we are spreading the message yet again.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's a there's a public safety element to
- 21:08Speaker 1: this too, because the guy that got rescued from the
- 21:10Speaker 1: one here in Montana right into the river. First stop, she.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Went right into the river too. Oh this this news
- 21:18Speaker 5: release says that she was when she was lifted out
- 21:22Speaker 5: with a strap, she went right into the river to
- 21:25Speaker 5: wash herself off.
- 21:26Speaker 1: That's right, head.
- 21:27Speaker 8: And if you're on a boat, you maybe have a
- 21:29Speaker 8: fishing pole, Like, could you get a little more inventive
- 21:31Speaker 8: than just sticking your body down?
- 21:34Speaker 1: I think, well, the guy that did it, the guy
- 21:36Speaker 1: that got stuck here, was just traveling and just pulled
- 21:40Speaker 1: into the you know, wasn't fishing Okay, Ready, Chester. Ready, Okay,
- 21:48Speaker 1: Chester is going to so this is the thing we've
- 21:51Speaker 1: been messing with for a long time. Karin and I
- 21:53Speaker 1: actually feel bad. Box. We wasted. Now let's just say wasted.
- 21:57Speaker 1: There's a machine called the war and her Bratsler. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: had had an interaction with one of these years ago
- 22:07Speaker 1: where some meat scientists were testing how tender beef was
- 22:14Speaker 1: and I was shocked to learn that there's a machine
- 22:17Speaker 1: that applies a number to meat tenderness. So Chester and
- 22:21Speaker 1: I have done a lot of different meats in the
- 22:23Speaker 1: meat tenderness tester, and Chester is going to demonstrate, Uh,
- 22:28Speaker 1: walk us through at Chester, what you have.
- 22:29Speaker 4: We've got a yearling white tail, right Karinn yep, and
- 22:35Speaker 4: Karinn seared this up last night, just got the pan
- 22:40Speaker 4: real hot, seared it on each side evenly, and we're
- 22:44Speaker 4: looking at it. About a rare cut, you know, hold
- 22:48Speaker 4: it up, yep. It's about rare and the way you
- 22:53Speaker 4: do it is you take We're going to take four
- 22:56Speaker 4: core samples here that I board out with this here
- 23:00Speaker 4: a little contraption so.
- 23:02Speaker 1: If you're watching online you'll be able to see the
- 23:03Speaker 1: core amply. If not, it's like like a core exactly.
- 23:07Speaker 1: It's like a little stainless steel hole cutter.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Yep, and I cut the meat. I cut an inch
- 23:14Speaker 4: off of this little piece here, and I made these
- 23:19Speaker 4: core samples, and I went with the grain. I cut
- 23:22Speaker 4: with the grains. They're all consistent and that's.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So it goes into the shear. To measure its tenderness,
- 23:28Speaker 1: it'll be cutting.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Cross grain against the grain, which is important. And this
- 23:34Speaker 4: thing measures in kilograms of force, which is an international
- 23:40Speaker 4: standard for tests and how tender meat is. So we're
- 23:44Speaker 4: gonna throw it in there and we're gonna do four
- 23:48Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe three. There's three good cores here.
- 23:52Speaker 4: We'll do three tests forced tests, and then we'll get
- 23:59Speaker 4: you know, will average these out and we'll get how
- 24:03Speaker 4: actual tender this meat is.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Got it. What's interesting about this is one of the
- 24:07Speaker 1: things we're going to cover today is a letter just
- 24:09Speaker 1: went out from the Michigan DNR basically begging deer hunters
- 24:16Speaker 1: to kill dose the dough. I can't believe this. The
- 24:20Speaker 1: dough harvest in Michigan is actually down the dough. When
- 24:25Speaker 1: I was a kid growing up Michigan, if you drew
- 24:27Speaker 1: a dough tag, you were so you would like apply
- 24:30Speaker 1: for dough tags and wait in the like licking your
- 24:33Speaker 1: lips hoping to get a dope tag. You know, Jeer
- 24:37Speaker 1: Bob got a dough tag and everybody really excited about it.
- 24:42Speaker 1: They cannot get so agricultural damage. You have issues of
- 24:47Speaker 1: disease transmission, you have issues of highway safety, you have
- 24:51Speaker 1: herd health issues, just general herd stress issues. And they man,
- 24:58Speaker 1: people are not shooting and they're being begged to shoot those.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I don't live there anymore, but it's like they're writing
- 25:04Speaker 1: letters being like, please, please, not that you can't shoot
- 25:07Speaker 1: a buck. Get some does too, and just I don't
- 25:10Speaker 1: know what the hell's everybody eating.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It's a national problem. Yeah, we put an article just
- 25:16Speaker 3: yesterday talking nationally about that issue, people not shooting enough dose.
- 25:22Speaker 3: We're both Levi I and both from Pennsylvania. We had
- 25:24Speaker 3: the same system you put in for a dough tag.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Maybe you got one, maybe you didn't. Now you can
- 25:28Speaker 3: get six, and we know that most hunters won't even
- 25:32Speaker 3: shoot one. And so we're seeing that trend nationally where
- 25:36Speaker 3: the buck harvest is actually equal to or even higher
- 25:38Speaker 3: than the alis harvest.
- 25:40Speaker 1: YEP.
- 25:40Speaker 3: And it's a problem.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I don't I don't what do you what do you
- 25:43Speaker 1: think it is.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I think it's a lot of things. I think you
- 25:46Speaker 3: have more people really prioritizing mature bucks, which is, you know,
- 25:51Speaker 3: good from the recreational end of things. But what happens
- 25:53Speaker 3: is they're they're sitting there making a judgment, Well, I'd
- 25:56Speaker 3: really like to fill this dough tag. But if I
- 25:58Speaker 3: shoot that dough is Buckham after right behind her? Am
- 26:01Speaker 3: I going to ruin that?
- 26:02Speaker 1: Ye?
- 26:03Speaker 3: And then they say things like, well, I'm gonna do
- 26:04Speaker 3: it in the late season. Well, then the late season
- 26:07Speaker 3: comes and everybody's burned out and nobody does it.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But my friends are serious about Like friends of mine
- 26:11Speaker 1: that are serious about land management on their properties, they
- 26:15Speaker 1: hunt during the rut, they hunt bucks. Later, they get
- 26:18Speaker 1: serious about dough killing. You know, my buddy Doug Dirnell,
- 26:21Speaker 1: they kill thirty dolls a year. I got another friend
- 26:24Speaker 1: they kill twenty plus dos a year off their property.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I got a friend in Texas they kill hundreds of
- 26:29Speaker 1: dolls a year off their property. But they make a
- 26:31Speaker 1: time and make it an effort, and like after the
- 26:34Speaker 1: regular hunting's done, they get busy.
- 26:36Speaker 3: They're educated managers, and I think it's the difference uneducated
- 26:39Speaker 3: managers prioritize that buck so much that they don't understand
- 26:43Speaker 3: that they're actually hurting their chances at a mature buck
- 26:46Speaker 3: by not shooting dose.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You know that's funny. Like this friend of mine in Texas,
- 26:51Speaker 1: he's in an area there's no egg Okay, so it's
- 26:54Speaker 1: not it's not like a egg issue. It's not protecting
- 26:57Speaker 1: alfalf on corn. He's in a non egg air are
- 27:00Speaker 1: very rural. There's not like a highway collision issue. You
- 27:03Speaker 1: asked those guys while they killed those they killed dose.
- 27:05Speaker 1: They like big bucks, and he's like, they try and
- 27:08Speaker 1: lower stress. They're like lowering stress, lowering over population, and
- 27:13Speaker 1: it's all about buck managing.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I think PA has just they made it so hard
- 27:18Speaker 2: to get dough tagged forever. You had to go to
- 27:20Speaker 2: the courthouse and get them and then like buy.
- 27:25Speaker 3: It just went away this year.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, now we can finally buy dough tags over the counter.
- 27:29Speaker 2: So mm hmm. I got my whole, my son's whole
- 27:32Speaker 2: baseball team buying dough tags for the unit my farm's in.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I'm don't really take all the kids and just turn them.
- 27:39Speaker 4: That sounds like a blast, Yeah, a.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Good way to introduce kids donting.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Oh for sure, man, kids, it's so excited about doos.
- 27:48Speaker 1: All right, Chester tell kay walkers through. That was an interlude.
- 27:52Speaker 4: So we're looking at a scale from like two to six.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Here on my guess on what this is gonna be five?
- 28:03Speaker 8: Meat?
- 28:04Speaker 4: Starting at five it's it's like kind of unacceptable that
- 28:08Speaker 4: meaning it's gonna be tough.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Well, we had that meat scientist from Purdue on Nebraska,
- 28:14Speaker 1: just from University of Nebraska. Okay, what did I say, Perdue?
- 28:18Speaker 1: What the hell's that? Sounds like that's a big egg
- 28:20Speaker 1: school University of Nebraska. That's what he was talking about.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Is when you when a customer goes and buys a
- 28:26Speaker 1: steak and they're dissatisfied with their steak because it was
- 28:29Speaker 1: too tough.
- 28:30Speaker 4: It's a what now, like a five meaning I think
- 28:34Speaker 4: what what that means in the kilograms of force? It's
- 28:38Speaker 4: like unacceptable, got it to a to a paying customer
- 28:41Speaker 4: or whatever.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Unacceptable beef.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Like A two is like holy cow, that's a that's
- 28:46Speaker 4: a tender piece of meat.
- 28:47Speaker 8: Uh.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Three is like you know, that's still pretty good. Four
- 28:51Speaker 4: is like it's starting to get tough.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Five is like god, now, so two if you're in
- 28:58Speaker 1: a place and you get a steak and you're like,
- 28:59Speaker 1: my good, that steaks tender. Could be in the two,
- 29:01Speaker 1: right if you're like, holy cola, steaks unpalatable, it's a
- 29:05Speaker 1: five where you're like getting little bits of a steak
- 29:07Speaker 1: out and put it in your napkin because you can
- 29:09Speaker 1: never get it chewed through.
- 29:10Speaker 4: It's like you're chewing a piece of gum. Might be
- 29:12Speaker 4: a five.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Okay, So Chester cut the core out and he loaded
- 29:16Speaker 1: it into the sheer force machine. Yep, and not what
- 29:20Speaker 1: happens right now?
- 29:20Speaker 5: It's not zeroed out.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Well, I've been trying to zero that thing the whole time.
- 29:26Speaker 9: We're going.
- 29:28Speaker 1: You can't get it zero. There's no tear button on there.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Ter A, it's like French for zero.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It's not.
- 29:35Speaker 1: But my my scale has like, is that really French
- 29:38Speaker 1: for zero? What does that mean?
- 29:44Speaker 4: Yea, from this.
- 29:48Speaker 2: That's how you zero out, both on that math or well.
- 29:53Speaker 1: The fact that we can't get zero is distressing. Is
- 29:59Speaker 1: it the weight of the sheer.
- 30:02Speaker 2: It could be.
- 30:03Speaker 4: It could be, but they're all pretty consistent, so I
- 30:05Speaker 4: feel like we.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Could That's okay, we'll just try subtractil.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Maybe don't see me because then people won't know that
- 30:12Speaker 1: the scales that that it's off.
- 30:14Speaker 5: We see your labs. We're like in a very professional
- 30:19Speaker 5: lab set up here. Everything is accurate.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Chest got our lab. I'm sweating because I got my
- 30:23Speaker 1: lab coat down.
- 30:24Speaker 4: I got Krin's lab coat to the way we could
- 30:26Speaker 4: do this, Krinn is just write both numbers down, the
- 30:29Speaker 4: actual number and then subtract.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Yep, that sounds good.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Okay, So just so this year, when you're out there
- 30:37Speaker 1: sitting there in a in a white tail, a youngster
- 30:42Speaker 1: white tail fawn comes by and you're like, wow, if
- 30:45Speaker 1: I shoot that, I might not have a buck. Keep
- 30:46Speaker 1: this in mind, how tender is that thing that just
- 30:49Speaker 1: you let us walk past?
- 30:50Speaker 4: And just by cutting into this, I think it's going
- 30:53Speaker 4: to be acceptable, acceptable, exceptional.
- 30:58Speaker 1: He hit the button. Now it's shearing the meat.
- 31:06Speaker 8: Huh.
- 31:08Speaker 6: I've been very intrigued about this show that.
- 31:17Speaker 4: I think if I feel like we don't subtract it,
- 31:24Speaker 4: I don't know, because it's like, I don't know, what
- 31:27Speaker 4: do you guys think? It's like taking that measurement at
- 31:30Speaker 4: this Chris, We'll just do both.
- 31:36Speaker 1: What are you doing both of?
- 31:38Speaker 4: And we're gonna do that number and we're gonna still
- 31:41Speaker 4: record that, and then we're also going to subtract that
- 31:45Speaker 4: point three.
- 31:46Speaker 5: And just just for consistency's sake, maybe we do like
- 31:49Speaker 5: another one, Yeah, do one more.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Next time we do this, we're gonna get the meanest
- 31:53Speaker 1: old bok you've ever seen. Man run them through there, well,
- 31:57Speaker 1: like the kind of balk like eats rabbits.
- 31:59Speaker 5: We we have a little mini series called Test my Meat.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Throughout the next couple of weeks, we'll have some videos
- 32:08Speaker 5: on social media, on Instagram, maybe on TikTok where we
- 32:12Speaker 5: test what did we test gator.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Old elk old elk meat, this bend in a freezer
- 32:18Speaker 1: for a decade. Yep, we had people just sent us
- 32:21Speaker 1: all people send us all kinds of stuff to test
- 32:26Speaker 1: old bear meat, not old bear meat, tough bear meat.
- 32:28Speaker 1: We had a guy sending a bear. He's like, you
- 32:30Speaker 1: can't eat this bear, it's so tough, and we put
- 32:33Speaker 1: re ran that through the Warner Braxler.
- 32:35Speaker 8: I like this idea of getting like baselines of meats
- 32:38Speaker 8: because then I think we need to do like meat
- 32:40Speaker 8: eater test kitchen and be like, how can we take
- 32:43Speaker 8: this gnarly old meat and make it more tender?
- 32:46Speaker 1: Exactly? You hitting it Chester. Yeah, if you it'd be
- 32:50Speaker 1: interesting to take a piece of shoulder meat, run it
- 32:52Speaker 1: through the tender in this tester, and then slow cook
- 32:55Speaker 1: one and run it through the tech.
- 32:56Speaker 8: Do you like a brine, do like a marinade, do
- 32:58Speaker 8: like a slow smoke idea, That is some tender. This
- 33:03Speaker 8: is what I do in my kitchen all the time.
- 33:05Speaker 8: I just don't have a cool machine to test.
- 33:06Speaker 4: So that come out to one point seven seven of
- 33:12Speaker 4: force two is tender. Two is tender like real tender.
- 33:17Speaker 1: So when you're looking at that white tail fall and
- 33:20Speaker 1: walk by, he's more tender than tender.
- 33:24Speaker 4: He's more tender than tender or she or she based
- 33:28Speaker 4: on we were just talking about, so Corin hopefully.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, button box, that's frowned.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Upon, Corin. This is a just so everyone knows. This
- 33:40Speaker 4: is a backstrap, right? And when did you shoot this deer?
- 33:45Speaker 4: And do you know how long? It's like ben in
- 33:47Speaker 4: your freezer?
- 33:49Speaker 5: I shot this deer. Uh last Let's see, it was
- 33:54Speaker 5: like Cole at the end of the season. I think
- 33:59Speaker 5: it was December.
- 34:02Speaker 4: December.
- 34:03Speaker 5: I think it was December, so it was last year.
- 34:05Speaker 4: It's been sitting in there not quite a year.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Good job, Chrin. Yeah, thanks for Sharon. All right, Maggie
- 34:13Speaker 1: Huddle is going to come in and since it is
- 34:15Speaker 1: Whitetail Week, Maggie Huddle is going to come in and
- 34:17Speaker 1: tell us about some highlights from whitetail content.
- 34:20Speaker 8: Yeah. So one of our most exciting things we've got
- 34:22Speaker 8: going on is from our firearms expert, Jordan Sillers. Because
- 34:28Speaker 8: we know how much everyone loves to complain about caliber battles.
- 34:33Speaker 8: So now we are letting all of you listeners readers interact.
- 34:38Speaker 6: We are doing a.
- 34:41Speaker 8: White Tail Week caliber battle bracket March Madness style. It
- 34:47Speaker 8: is October Madness, so you know, Shark Week, March Madness.
- 34:51Speaker 8: We're ripping everybody off here. It's gonna be great. So
- 34:57Speaker 8: we have a few rounds. You get to cast your
- 35:02Speaker 8: vote on the meat eater dot Com in the comment
- 35:05Speaker 8: section below the articles of what caliber you think is
- 35:09Speaker 8: the best whitetail cartridge and whatever caliber wins that one
- 35:14Speaker 8: goes onto the next round. And kind of another interesting
- 35:19Speaker 8: twist to this is everybody is picked around, so Clay
- 35:24Speaker 8: scott one, Spencer's got one, Garrett scott one, Mark scott one,
- 35:28Speaker 8: so we'll see who picked the best cart and the.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Best, the listener's choice, audience choice favorite will emerge.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yes, And what's the criteria for the best. It's just
- 35:41Speaker 4: your personal opinion.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Rublic, but the highest public support.
- 35:44Speaker 6: Yeah, got you?
- 35:45Speaker 8: Like?
- 35:46Speaker 4: Meaning like what takes a deer down really well without
- 35:52Speaker 4: ruining the meat? Ruin as much meat? Like you know
- 35:55Speaker 4: what I'm saying.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Well, yeah, it's it's a measurement of public opinion. Correct.
- 35:59Speaker 8: It's also like the article itself is structured like Jordan's
- 36:03Speaker 8: other caliber battles, so he takes into account like the
- 36:07Speaker 8: availability of it, the shoot ability. I forget, there's one
- 36:12Speaker 8: more category in there. Gosh, I read so many of
- 36:14Speaker 8: these things, you think I know it by heart. So
- 36:17Speaker 8: people can read these things and kind of make up
- 36:19Speaker 8: their own mind if they don't already have an opinion.
- 36:23Speaker 8: And when you do go on these and comment, you
- 36:25Speaker 8: can just say like, oh, I think it's the three
- 36:28Speaker 8: eight Winchester or I think it's a six ' five
- 36:30Speaker 8: creed More. And you can also say why so if
- 36:33Speaker 8: you are very opinionated on this thing, like you can
- 36:36Speaker 8: let everybody know, or you can just say like, oh,
- 36:39Speaker 8: it's this one. So that's how you can cast your vote.
- 36:42Speaker 1: What do you predict will when Oh, it's.
- 36:48Speaker 8: People really like the six ' five creed More and
- 36:51Speaker 8: they really like to talk about it. And I feel
- 36:53Speaker 8: like people who like the six or five creed More
- 36:55Speaker 8: are very opinionated. So that's kind of where I'm leaning
- 37:01Speaker 8: towards because I feel like that's the most vocal gun support.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Group and it's pretty trendy round It's it's very trendy.
- 37:08Speaker 8: Does shoot Yeah, Oh it's great. My boyfriend's got one
- 37:11Speaker 8: and I shot it the other day. I was like,
- 37:12Speaker 8: did that shoot? I Like, I didn't feel it. That's
- 37:15Speaker 8: are you sure you want to shoot that gun?
- 37:17Speaker 5: Honey?
- 37:17Speaker 1: No? I have my kids shoot uh sig crosses with suppressors,
- 37:24Speaker 1: and my ten year old daughter is like she's like
- 37:27Speaker 1: made out of cables. She's just very thin and like tough,
- 37:33Speaker 1: but like thin, and she shoots that and just you
- 37:37Speaker 1: can just shoot, shoot and shoot shoot not getting kicked.
- 37:41Speaker 1: You know. She kind of laughs after she shoots because
- 37:44Speaker 1: she's like so amped up that it's going to do
- 37:46Speaker 1: something bad to her. And then just and then kids
- 37:48Speaker 1: confuse too, They confuse the they confuse the noise with kick.
- 37:54Speaker 1: So once you really mitigate. I also put headphones on
- 37:57Speaker 1: her and it's suppressed. And just because it's not so
- 38:01Speaker 1: overpowering the loudness, she feels like she translates that to
- 38:05Speaker 1: a lack of kick. You know, it's super helpful.
- 38:09Speaker 6: Man, that's awesome.
- 38:10Speaker 1: I just dread shooting my gun. Yeah, to not kid,
- 38:13Speaker 1: I dreaded pulling the trick.
- 38:14Speaker 6: Yeah, learn to flinch like that, young sure.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Well my kids, I'm like baby, and I'm putting head
- 38:21Speaker 2: like all the noise protections he's got to. My son's
- 38:24Speaker 2: got a six five creed More two and my dad
- 38:26Speaker 2: was like leaning me up against a tractor tire with
- 38:28Speaker 2: a thirty six and.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It's good luck, you know. It's like, okay, that's why
- 38:34Speaker 1: I can't hear anything either.
- 38:35Speaker 4: So I think my first rifle was like a seven
- 38:38Speaker 4: mage with like no ear protection and like here you go.
- 38:42Speaker 1: You know, yeah, I remember the first time. I remember
- 38:46Speaker 1: the first time I shot, first time I shot a shotgun.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Of course, it was like a sowd Off twelve gage
- 38:52Speaker 1: knocked me out of my ass and I was like, okay,
- 38:54Speaker 1: ready to go and to deer hunting. Like my old
- 38:58Speaker 1: man is Buddy Eugene or whatever, I'm remember them. I
- 39:00Speaker 1: got to be old enough to hunt with a gun.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I remember they filled a gallon milk jug full of water,
- 39:06Speaker 1: marched across Eugene's yard, set it on a fence post,
- 39:09Speaker 1: probably sixty yards out. If you hit that, Milt joggers like,
- 39:13Speaker 1: all right, let's go. Good enough, like ears are ringing
- 39:20Speaker 1: for three. Oh yeah, all right, we're gonna get into
- 39:33Speaker 1: We're gonna get into a film. You really gotta check
- 39:35Speaker 1: out wild Tail America's Wildest wild wild Tail America's wildest
- 39:42Speaker 1: conservation success story, Nick laid out.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's we're very proud of this. It's a
- 39:48Speaker 3: great film. It's one aspect of a larger initiative called
- 39:51Speaker 3: the Southeast Deer Partnership, which is made up the fifteen
- 39:55Speaker 3: southeastern US states as part of the Association for Fish
- 39:59Speaker 3: and Wildlife Agents. So we have a lot of partners
- 40:01Speaker 3: on this. The company that we worked with to do
- 40:04Speaker 3: this is called Strategic Strategic Digital Services. Joe Clemens is
- 40:07Speaker 3: the executive producer. They just did not standing job. We
- 40:11Speaker 3: couldn't be happier about it. And the reason we did
- 40:14Speaker 3: this number one because it's never been done before. But
- 40:17Speaker 3: number two is we talked about at the beginning there
- 40:18Speaker 3: are so many critical things that people don't know about
- 40:22Speaker 3: deer other than don't hit one with my car or
- 40:24Speaker 3: where can I go shoot one? They don't think about
- 40:26Speaker 3: them a whole lot. And so a documentary of this
- 40:30Speaker 3: type we thought would be a really good vehicle to
- 40:32Speaker 3: get this in front of folks to watch it, and
- 40:33Speaker 3: not just hunters, like I said, but anybody that cares
- 40:37Speaker 3: about wildlife at all. So it's been producing this thing
- 40:43Speaker 3: has been fun. But now that it went from research
- 40:45Speaker 3: on the front end where we had to go and
- 40:47Speaker 3: look at the numbers, because that's something else that was
- 40:49Speaker 3: never done. We would talk all the time about how
- 40:51Speaker 3: important deer are, but we couldn't really put numbers to it,
- 40:54Speaker 3: and so we worked with Responsive Management to do some
- 40:56Speaker 3: survey work and this is again dialed in onto Southeast States.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Now we do have plans and have just talked about
- 41:03Speaker 3: broadening this out nationwide. But we found some critical things,
- 41:06Speaker 3: I mean, just in the Southeast, two hundred and nine
- 41:11Speaker 3: thousand jobs because of deer hunting, five point five billion
- 41:15Speaker 3: dollars in salaries because of deer hunting, not in the Southeast,
- 41:19Speaker 3: just in the Southeast, and so we want to figure
- 41:21Speaker 3: out what this is nationally because it's huge and as
- 41:23Speaker 3: I said at the outset, eight out of ten people
- 41:25Speaker 3: to buy a hunting license or hunting deer. Every time
- 41:28Speaker 3: somebody hangs up the rifle or the bow and doesn't
- 41:30Speaker 3: do that anymore has an impact on these numbers. Pittman
- 41:34Speaker 3: Robertson dollars is something that you've talked a lot about
- 41:37Speaker 3: on the show. So in two thousand and one, there
- 41:39Speaker 3: were six hundred and seventy nine million dollars that came
- 41:42Speaker 3: out of that fund. Through the analysis, we found out
- 41:47Speaker 3: about two hundred and ninety four of that is just
- 41:49Speaker 3: from deer hunting. Now that's nationally, so it's a huge number.
- 41:54Speaker 3: And so this project originally was y'all give Larry Williams
- 41:58Speaker 3: from the Fish and Wildlife Service credit it for this.
- 42:00Speaker 3: We had a conversation about five years ago saying, hey,
- 42:03Speaker 3: this is a critical issue. Nobody's talking about it. We
- 42:05Speaker 3: need to shed some light on this. And so he
- 42:07Speaker 3: went and found the resources and helped pull this together
- 42:10Speaker 3: and to do the research, which I said is phase one,
- 42:14Speaker 3: and now do the documentary wild Tale and blast this
- 42:18Speaker 3: out to a whole bunch of people so that they
- 42:20Speaker 3: can see it and get the word out about this
- 42:23Speaker 3: issue because again, if you're a bird watcher living in Iowa,
- 42:26Speaker 3: you should care about deer, and we think people don't
- 42:29Speaker 3: for the most part, so it's important.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I sat for interviews in the film, But then now
- 42:35Speaker 1: I haven't had a chance. I'm a little backed up
- 42:36Speaker 1: on film watching. I sat for interviews in the film.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I haven't watched the film yet, which I'm excited to
- 42:40Speaker 1: do and I'm gonna do it this weekend. Clay Newcombe
- 42:43Speaker 1: sits for interviews. Yep. Who else you got? I mean
- 42:45Speaker 1: you got tons of biologists.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Yeah, we got funds from the states that the Southeastern
- 42:51Speaker 3: states for sure, folks from my organization. Dustin Lynch, very
- 42:55Speaker 3: popular country music artist, is the narrator. As you said,
- 42:59Speaker 3: you and Clay are in it as well, and so
- 43:01Speaker 3: really went out and got, you know, all the top people,
- 43:04Speaker 3: the top voices to talk about this issue from all
- 43:07Speaker 3: the different aspects. I mean, you cover a lot of
- 43:08Speaker 3: very interesting aspects that I know people don't think about.
- 43:11Speaker 3: In the film, Clay does the same thing. We have
- 43:14Speaker 3: the state wildlife biologist on there talking about what it
- 43:17Speaker 3: means to their state.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You know, it's funny about Clay. He's uh, he said,
- 43:23Speaker 1: he goes, I don't want to take this wrong way,
- 43:25Speaker 1: but I didn't expect it to be so good.
- 43:29Speaker 3: He loved it, Yeah, he told us. Yeah, he was
- 43:32Speaker 3: at one of the premiers. So we've been premiering this
- 43:34Speaker 3: thing in different places in the country. Actually be in
- 43:36Speaker 3: Virginia next week.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Yeah, so we're doing premiers. You know, love to do
- 43:40Speaker 3: one out here. Sometimes there's a possibility to do that. Yeah,
- 43:44Speaker 3: so we'd love to do that. But you know, when
- 43:47Speaker 3: as part of the research, state biologists were poled about
- 43:50Speaker 3: what do you feel the importance is of deer to
- 43:53Speaker 3: your the funding of your agency? And out of ten
- 43:56Speaker 3: it was eight point four. And so even though you know,
- 44:00Speaker 3: especially a deer biologist, I'll tell a lot of them
- 44:02Speaker 3: don't like the public because there's very there's no more
- 44:04Speaker 3: polarizing animal than deer, but they recognize that they really
- 44:09Speaker 3: are buttering the bread of the conservation of all species.
- 44:12Speaker 3: So the most of a state wildlife's budget is funded
- 44:15Speaker 3: through things that trace all the way back to deer
- 44:18Speaker 3: and deer hunting.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Yeah, So, I mean that's the critical thing we have
- 44:22Speaker 3: to have to get out there.
- 44:24Speaker 1: The film.
- 44:24Speaker 3: As I said, right now we're premiering, so doing that
- 44:27Speaker 3: across the country. But it's going to be available for
- 44:30Speaker 3: rent or purchase on Amazon and iTunes and Google Play
- 44:33Speaker 3: on October twenty seventh, so that's coming up very soon.
- 44:37Speaker 3: But the main goal of this, it's not to sell
- 44:39Speaker 3: the movie as much as it is to get this
- 44:41Speaker 3: in front of as many eyeballs as possible so that
- 44:44Speaker 3: you know, I tell people in our organization, I have
- 44:47Speaker 3: a dream someday that somebody will join the National Deer Association.
- 44:51Speaker 3: It has no intention of shooting a deer yep. And
- 44:53Speaker 3: that may sound crazy, but if you look at Ducks Unlimited,
- 44:55Speaker 3: one of the things I'm that's very impressive about them
- 44:58Speaker 3: as people buy duck stamps and they don't even care
- 45:01Speaker 3: to shoot a duc, but they care about conservation. We
- 45:03Speaker 3: need to make that happen with deer. And you know,
- 45:07Speaker 3: Kip Adams is our chief conservation officer. He leads this
- 45:10Speaker 3: project for us, and that is we were texting about
- 45:13Speaker 3: this before I come out here. That's the chief concern deer,
- 45:17Speaker 3: our conservation, whether it be threatening endangered species all the
- 45:21Speaker 3: way through songbirds.
- 45:22Speaker 2: They matter.
- 45:23Speaker 1: It's important when Phil's done down there at yell, and
- 45:26Speaker 1: we should do maybe we could do like a screen
- 45:28Speaker 1: down there or something like that. I think about that, Phil.
- 45:30Speaker 1: How how many seats are in that place?
- 45:33Speaker 7: I honestly don't know. It's a couple hundred though, Oh yeah, yeah, but.
- 45:40Speaker 1: See if you guys could bring your film to this town.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll do it.
- 45:43Speaker 3: Absolutely, We'll love to devote it. That's what we want
- 45:45Speaker 3: to hear.
- 45:46Speaker 1: A song even better?
- 45:48Speaker 3: Yet, were you wear the goggles.
- 45:50Speaker 4: And all these things. People are gonna they're gonna show
- 45:53Speaker 4: up expecting to watch, you know, be there for conservation,
- 45:59Speaker 4: and then I'm to get up there and sing a
- 46:01Speaker 4: song to be like, who the hell is this guy?
- 46:03Speaker 1: You need to get like a pyrotechnics package and stuff. Yeah,
- 46:06Speaker 1: I need to do something, just really get and sparks
- 46:10Speaker 1: and stuff shooting everywhere.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Yeah, to Clay's point real quick that I understand why
- 46:14Speaker 3: he would say that, because it's even better than I thought.
- 46:16Speaker 1: It would be. Really, you you're guilty team, absolutely.
- 46:18Speaker 3: I mean it's a you know, it's a bunch of
- 46:20Speaker 3: redneck deer hunters and biologist putting the film together. What
- 46:22Speaker 3: could get wrong? LEVI, you know, but no, I mean
- 46:25Speaker 3: that's again where I thought Strategic Digital Services really brought
- 46:28Speaker 3: that professional. I mean, you watch the thing, It's as
- 46:31Speaker 3: good as any documentary you'll watching anything.
- 46:33Speaker 1: So I can't wait it. So, so layout again for
- 46:36Speaker 1: folks how to check it out, and so it's you
- 46:40Speaker 1: tour it. You got tour dates coming.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Up right now. The last one we have a scheduled
- 46:44Speaker 3: for the October fourth in Richmond, Virginia. Okay, We've already
- 46:47Speaker 3: been in Kentucky, Arkansas and Nashville, And.
- 46:51Speaker 1: So that's what you thought, is it is it, you know,
- 46:54Speaker 1: relevant to northern audiences?
- 46:56Speaker 3: And I think it is. We want to we want
- 46:59Speaker 3: to take it there. We've just had conversations in Calgary
- 47:02Speaker 3: about how do we now to make this the national.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I like northern US, right, yeah, yeah, yeah, but
- 47:06Speaker 1: it is.
- 47:07Speaker 3: It absolutely is relevant because the numbers, you know, they're
- 47:09Speaker 3: going to be a little bit different for each region.
- 47:11Speaker 3: But I think the main point is driven home that
- 47:13Speaker 3: deer really matter beyond just something you shoot or avoid
- 47:16Speaker 3: with your car.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah. And then and then tell people again how
- 47:19Speaker 1: to go. So if they want to go see it
- 47:20Speaker 1: and not catch it live, how do they go see it? Yep?
- 47:22Speaker 3: So on October twenty seventh will be available on Amazon,
- 47:26Speaker 3: iTunes and Google Play. And if you want to see
- 47:28Speaker 3: information on the film, you just go to wildtalemovie dot
- 47:32Speaker 3: com and it'll, uh, it'll show you everything you need
- 47:34Speaker 3: to know to find it great.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And then tell us a little bit about National Deer
- 47:38Speaker 1: Association too, because I think that like people know, and
- 47:45Speaker 1: I'm a support I'm a lifetime member and supportive Rocky
- 47:48Speaker 1: Mountain Out Foundation. So a lot of times hunters will
- 47:51Speaker 1: have you know, hunters want to do habitat work and
- 47:54Speaker 1: benefit of the things they love to hunt. So Ducks
- 47:57Speaker 1: Unlimited is primarily, you know, very hunting friendly, hunter focused organization,
- 48:02Speaker 1: focus on ducks. Yeah, Quail Forever, Pheasant Forever, where people
- 48:06Speaker 1: that love to hunt quail, love to hunt pheasants, Rocky
- 48:09Speaker 1: Mountain Out Foundation, people that love to hunt elk. I
- 48:13Speaker 1: think it's maybe less widely known that there is an
- 48:18Speaker 1: organization that works on behalf of deer specifically, So plug
- 48:22Speaker 1: that out for folks.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Yeah, So we've been terrible at promoting ourselves. Imagine that.
- 48:25Speaker 3: You know, we're so focused on deer and the habitat
- 48:28Speaker 3: part of it. We've been around for thirty five years.
- 48:30Speaker 3: We were originally known as the Quality Deer Management Association
- 48:34Speaker 3: until about three years ago when we merged with the
- 48:36Speaker 3: National Deer Alliance to create the National Deer Association. So yeah,
- 48:41Speaker 3: our mission is to ensure the future of wild deer,
- 48:44Speaker 3: wildlife habitat, and hunting, which should be you know, core
- 48:47Speaker 3: to a that was said eight out of ten people
- 48:48Speaker 3: by a hunting license, so a lot of people ought
- 48:50Speaker 3: to care about that, and we really are the only
- 48:54Speaker 3: organization that from a deer perspective that digs into the science.
- 48:58Speaker 3: So we do a lot of interpretation of the science,
- 49:00Speaker 3: everything from deer diseases all the way through how to
- 49:02Speaker 3: grow a great food plot, how to kill something, all
- 49:06Speaker 3: of those things. As I said yesterday, we just had
- 49:08Speaker 3: the article talking about doe harvest from Lindsay Thomas, Junior,
- 49:11Speaker 3: our chief communications officers. So it's educational, it's also entertaining.
- 49:16Speaker 3: But we also do a lot of policy work as well.
- 49:18Speaker 3: I tell people that any day of the week there's
- 49:20Speaker 3: probably one hundred different bills across the country that have
- 49:23Speaker 3: some impact on deer and deer hunting. And so we
- 49:25Speaker 3: have Miller, a policy guy out there doing policy work
- 49:29Speaker 3: in the states, in the federal governments of spending time
- 49:32Speaker 3: in d C. So we're a white collar or blue collar.
- 49:35Speaker 3: We're biologists, and you know, I'm really proud of what
- 49:38Speaker 3: we've done. What I'm not proud of is we haven't
- 49:41Speaker 3: done the best job of telling people about what we've done.
- 49:43Speaker 3: So Wildtail will help us do that. Being on shows
- 49:47Speaker 3: like this, our relationship with you all, doing the tour
- 49:50Speaker 3: right now with Mark Kenyon and going around and looking
- 49:52Speaker 3: at all the conservation projects that we're working on together.
- 49:55Speaker 3: I think three of those projects are ours. The back
- 49:58Speaker 3: forty that we got through you all, we've had how's back?
- 50:04Speaker 1: I was asking Mark about that recently.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we can't get rid of Mark. But other than that,
- 50:08Speaker 3: it's going great. He seems always show up there. But
- 50:11Speaker 3: just this year, I think we had six, six or
- 50:14Speaker 3: seven hunters on the first Field to Fork event that
- 50:16Speaker 3: we had out there this year. We're successful. Was killing deer. Yeah,
- 50:20Speaker 3: and we'll get back and well and we'll make six
- 50:22Speaker 3: or seven more people successful. So we're taking a lot
- 50:24Speaker 3: of deer there. We've now developed relationships with neighbors out
- 50:28Speaker 3: there who are letting us come on their property.
- 50:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Because when it started, and you know, this is Michigan
- 50:33Speaker 3: and you've been on the property. Uh not everyone is
- 50:35Speaker 3: excited about this idea We're going to bring people in
- 50:37Speaker 3: and shoot all these deer in their neighborhood, right, But
- 50:40Speaker 3: it's coming around and people were kind of embracing it.
- 50:42Speaker 3: So we have used the back forty as a model
- 50:45Speaker 3: for I think. I think we're doing with it what
- 50:48Speaker 3: you all had hoped we would do with it. We're
- 50:50Speaker 3: very proud of that.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I always felt that the scrorel numbers are disappointing to
- 50:56Speaker 1: me out there.
- 50:57Speaker 3: I saw that episode.
- 50:58Speaker 1: How's that coming along, you guys, Squirrel improvements? I was like,
- 51:01Speaker 1: bringing in one hundred year old oak trees and planting them.
- 51:05Speaker 3: We have to add that to the list. We do
- 51:07Speaker 3: have a local branch out there, which is very helpful.
- 51:09Speaker 3: So it's local volunteers that are managing that land. We
- 51:12Speaker 3: pick on Mark, but you know, he's part of that
- 51:15Speaker 3: effort that helps do that, and so we we can't
- 51:18Speaker 3: you know, it's hard for us to do it from
- 51:19Speaker 3: the national organization, but our branch does it, and I
- 51:22Speaker 3: will put on the list Squirrel habitat great.
- 51:24Speaker 1: So you had six people get their first year, Yeah.
- 51:25Speaker 3: It might have been seven. Yeah, just our first time
- 51:27Speaker 3: of the year out there.
- 51:28Speaker 1: It's fun man. Yeah, alrighty this year, this.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Year, yeah, this season, early season.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Yep, it's great and getting along with the neighbors good.
- 51:35Speaker 1: It seems to be excellent, man, excellent. All right. But
- 51:39Speaker 1: check out wild Tail, America's wildest conservation success story, set
- 51:45Speaker 1: for release on October twenty seven on Amazon, iTunes and
- 51:48Speaker 1: Google Play. So you'll go see Phil cheerm On Noah, thanks,
- 51:54Speaker 1: and then and then race home and watch Wildtail. Do
- 51:58Speaker 1: the dates line up for that plan that evening? That's
- 52:00Speaker 1: a hell of a date night. Yeah.
- 52:02Speaker 7: I think you can make it work. Have some coffee beforehand,
- 52:04Speaker 7: it'll be fine, all.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Right, Levi Morgan, I want to dig back into oh man, Megiere,
- 52:11Speaker 1: we gooder, we got we got more.
- 52:12Speaker 8: We want to talk about oh for Whitetail Week.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Yeah, did that skip anything?
- 52:17Speaker 8: I mean, We've we got a whole lot that we're
- 52:20Speaker 8: going to be putting out on white Tail Week. It's
- 52:22Speaker 8: worth taking a look at the meat Eater site. We've
- 52:25Speaker 8: got articles from Tony Peterson and Mark Kenyon. We've got
- 52:28Speaker 8: a video from Levi. We've got lots of video content. Uh.
- 52:33Speaker 8: Check out the meat Eater site. Check out wired to hunt.
- 52:36Speaker 8: We'll be putting out fresh white tail content more then
- 52:39Speaker 8: you can consume every day.
- 52:41Speaker 1: All right, perfect now, Levi Morgan, sixteen times world champion.
- 52:46Speaker 1: But here's the thing I'm important is let's pick it
- 52:48Speaker 1: back up with you and your wife. You competed against
- 52:53Speaker 1: each other at nine years of age.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Yeah. In the IBO, there's a class called the cub class,
- 52:59Speaker 2: and so when you're really you just all shoot kids,
- 53:02Speaker 2: shoot against kids. And so probably till I was is
- 53:06Speaker 2: she older than you? A year older?
- 53:07Speaker 1: Okay?
- 53:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and Samantha Kleine was her name back then, and
- 53:11Speaker 2: it was like, man, I had a huge crush on
- 53:15Speaker 2: her there, but I dominated the cup class. That was
- 53:20Speaker 2: my glory days.
- 53:21Speaker 4: But I was just that part of that sixteen time.
- 53:24Speaker 2: No, that's all professional since I turned professional.
- 53:27Speaker 1: But uh huh.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I was a little kid in jeans shorts
- 53:31Speaker 2: and knee socks and hiking boots and a polo shirt
- 53:33Speaker 2: tucked in it. So she didn't like, she wasn't impressed.
- 53:37Speaker 1: Did you say you quit for a while, Yeah, in
- 53:39Speaker 1: high school? So what happened there? Yeah, I know you
- 53:41Speaker 1: got into other baseball and basketball.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Yeah. So when I was I think the last tournament
- 53:45Speaker 2: I shot was the IBO World Championship when I was
- 53:48Speaker 2: fourteen as an amateur and won that set a world
- 53:52Speaker 2: record and walked away from the sport.
- 53:53Speaker 1: What was the world record?
- 53:54Speaker 2: It was the first time that ever been cleaned, No eights,
- 53:58Speaker 2: all tens through fifty air. So I never missed a
- 54:01Speaker 2: ten through fifty ears, but walked away.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I would just walked away like dramatically.
- 54:07Speaker 5: No.
- 54:07Speaker 2: No, you know, my dad was always my coach, and
- 54:10Speaker 2: it was just one of those things where he always
- 54:12Speaker 2: demanded if I was he was going to take me
- 54:13Speaker 2: around to compete nationally, that I was going to put
- 54:17Speaker 2: in the work. And it was just one of those
- 54:20Speaker 2: things where I knew with high school I was starting
- 54:23Speaker 2: high school, I wanted to play sports. Girls were coming
- 54:25Speaker 2: into the equation.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Ohl, Amanda, Yeah, she's out of the picture though, Samanthama.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Let's talk about Amanda. Amanda, Samantha Cline, Samantha A man
- 54:36Speaker 1: is out of the picture at this point.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Yes, And so I just knew I wasn't gonna be
- 54:41Speaker 2: able to put into the sport what I needed to
- 54:43Speaker 2: compete at a high level. So I just decided, Hey,
- 54:45Speaker 2: if I want to come back to it later, I
- 54:47Speaker 2: will and I just focused on school and sports, and
- 54:50Speaker 2: just so when I graduated, I knew like I had
- 54:53Speaker 2: this desire to go back and and dig back in
- 54:58Speaker 2: what was the age?
- 55:00Speaker 1: I got two things I want to know now before
- 55:02Speaker 1: just set this up. First off, at what age did
- 55:05Speaker 1: you shoot your first arrow at a deer?
- 55:08Speaker 2: At a deer? Would have been.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Probably like just I guess, different than hitting one.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I would have been probably eight or nine, okay, Yeah.
- 55:17Speaker 2: And where I grew up family, Oh yeah, that's that's
- 55:20Speaker 2: the whole way I got into it. My dad was
- 55:21Speaker 2: a big, big hunter, so he just started going to
- 55:25Speaker 2: local tournaments and took me along just to get better
- 55:27Speaker 2: at shooting. And we grew up in the Carolina's hunting
- 55:30Speaker 2: all game lands there. So he used to tell me,
- 55:33Speaker 2: you're gonna get one opportunity a year, so make it count.
- 55:36Speaker 2: And it was that was the truth back then, Like
- 55:38Speaker 2: we didn't see a lot. We would go two weeks
- 55:40Speaker 2: and maybe see one or two deer.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Just hunting public ground.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, got it.
- 55:43Speaker 1: And so that was his thing, was like don't let
- 55:46Speaker 1: the shoot and be delimiting exactly.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Yeah, when you get an opportunity, to make it count.
- 55:50Speaker 2: And I did not the first few years I bow hunted.
- 55:53Speaker 2: But I think I killed my first deer with a
- 55:56Speaker 2: bow when I was twelve on that game land, South Carolina,
- 55:59Speaker 2: and it was a ten point and it.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Was a nice buck.
- 56:02Speaker 2: It was nice. Yeah, I mean for then, it couldn't
- 56:04Speaker 2: have been any bigger than me.
- 56:05Speaker 1: You know, But so were you at were you sitting
- 56:08Speaker 1: to stand by yourself at nine years of age?
- 56:09Speaker 5: Oh?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Yeah, So I shot with my first year with a
- 56:12Speaker 2: rifle at ten and an old summit climber with a
- 56:15Speaker 2: two seventy by myself.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Caliber battle that down for caliber battle.
- 56:20Speaker 2: I can't imagine turning point for.
- 56:22Speaker 1: The two seventy. But it was just would you get
- 56:25Speaker 1: scared being up there?
- 56:26Speaker 8: No?
- 56:27Speaker 1: When I at dark, That's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 1: when I had when I was always murder this when
- 56:31Speaker 1: I was a little kid, and I didn't start sitting
- 56:33Speaker 1: a tree by myself in Michigan had be twelve to
- 56:35Speaker 1: hunt with a bow. I can't remember if I started,
- 56:37Speaker 1: like I started gun hunting a little bit earlier than
- 56:39Speaker 1: you were supposed to. Like you're supposed to be at
- 56:41Speaker 1: that time, you had to be fourteen to hunt with
- 56:43Speaker 1: a gun. But we'd usually get started a little earlier.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty sure this was against the rules.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just like a guess. My man just
- 56:52Speaker 1: looked at it like, well, he was ahead of the
- 56:54Speaker 1: he was ahead of the curve because in the end,
- 56:57Speaker 1: the states did decide. Most states decide it's a family decision, right, Yeah,
- 57:02Speaker 1: and he just made it a family decision before it
- 57:04Speaker 1: was a family decision. But I remember man being in
- 57:07Speaker 1: that tree, staying at twelve and just being fine. Yeah,
- 57:10Speaker 1: And it'd get dark and you had to wait for
- 57:11Speaker 1: the old man to come around and you'd be like,
- 57:13Speaker 1: what is that guy doing left rating to see that
- 57:18Speaker 1: splash like coming through the trees.
- 57:20Speaker 8: Man.
- 57:21Speaker 1: You know, Oh, you used to scare me because I
- 57:23Speaker 1: used to go. We had this big ravine on this farm.
- 57:25Speaker 1: We'd hunt and you'd go down to the bottom of
- 57:26Speaker 1: this ravine. Dude, it seemed like you were like in
- 57:28Speaker 1: like you're like in Lewis and Clark Country you're talking about.
- 57:33Speaker 2: We had two way radios, but he did. My dad
- 57:35Speaker 2: wouldn't let me talk on it. It was we had
- 57:39Speaker 2: this More's code thing where I had to you had
- 57:42Speaker 2: to click it because he was like, you're gonna spook.
- 57:44Speaker 1: All the deer.
- 57:44Speaker 2: So I was like, okay, I just randomly start clicking
- 57:47Speaker 2: it and hoping. He answered, but yeah, so he'd come
- 57:50Speaker 2: pick you up. Yeah, but like you said, some nights
- 57:53Speaker 2: it's an hour after dark. I'm up there in tears
- 57:55Speaker 2: like something happened. And the rule was I couldn't get
- 57:58Speaker 2: down until he got there.
- 58:00Speaker 1: And every stump takes its turn looking like a bear exactly. Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so you tough en up quick, I think.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Oh, I think so, man, Yeah, how does the tournament work,
- 58:10Speaker 1: like like lay out the yardages and target size and stuffing.
- 58:12Speaker 1: It's it's consistent, right, I mean, like every tournament you
- 58:16Speaker 1: go to, is the what do you call it the course?
- 58:19Speaker 1: I mean right, yeah, of course the course is the same, right.
- 58:23Speaker 2: No, it's totally different.
- 58:24Speaker 1: So they so like indoors it changes.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Oh no, indoor archery is would be called feed to
- 58:30Speaker 2: archery or n FAA. So that's all just the same yardage,
- 58:34Speaker 2: the same face, doing the same thing every shot. It's
- 58:36Speaker 2: more like turn your brain off and just repeat, okay.
- 58:40Speaker 1: And that's like that's because that's that's what I'm trying
- 58:43Speaker 1: to think of as differentiate what people might be familiar
- 58:46Speaker 1: with with watching the Olympics for instance.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Right to what you're doing. Yeah, and the Olympics is
- 58:51Speaker 2: the same. But outdoors it's you know, fifty meters or
- 58:54Speaker 2: seventy meters whatever it is now and they just stand
- 58:57Speaker 2: there and just shoot the same yardage. So what And
- 58:59Speaker 2: I shoot those organizations as well, the n FAA, and
- 59:03Speaker 2: I've had success there. But what I really love is
- 59:06Speaker 2: is three D and so that's the course. It's like
- 59:08Speaker 2: a trail shoot almost where there's no rangefinders. Every target's
- 59:11Speaker 2: a different distance. It's like hunting simulation type and.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Get what do the yardages want up be? In a
- 59:16Speaker 1: net case?
- 59:17Speaker 2: So it's zero to fifty approximately, and so you know,
- 59:22Speaker 2: it's just one. You might go to a blackbird targets
- 59:25Speaker 2: it's thirty eight and then you shoot that one score,
- 59:27Speaker 2: go to the next one and it's a coyoto target
- 59:29Speaker 2: at fifty one down a good canyon, you know. So
- 59:32Speaker 2: it's just every shot it's different.
- 59:33Speaker 1: And then is a ten. Uh, how's it scored out?
- 59:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so you have in the ASA, it's a little
- 59:42Speaker 2: different than the IBO. The ASA, the ten is always
- 59:45Speaker 2: kind of par and like if you're a golfer, like
- 59:47Speaker 2: that would be they say a ten's your friend, and
- 59:50Speaker 2: I agree in a way, but if you want to win,
- 59:52Speaker 2: it's kind of not your friend. I mean, then you
- 59:55Speaker 2: have a twelve, which is a pretty risky shot. If
- 59:59Speaker 2: you miss the ten, you're an eight. We miss that,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: you're a five, and then if you miss the whole target,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: it's a zero. So the rings just get bigger. And
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: what is the twelve one of being So the twelve
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: sits down like the ten is like a five inch circle,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: and then the twelve is in the lower back corner
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: of the ten ring, So it's kind of risky.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Like if you shooting, you're flirting with the eight.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Yes, you're flirting with If you hit low, you flirt
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: with the eight. And then in the in the finals,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: we have what's called a fourteen, so it's a bonus
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: and it's up by itself in the corner of the
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: eight ring, so you're flirting with the five. It's like
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: if you go for that, you and you miss, there's
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: no par like you're dropping, you know. So it's uh
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: so I know I've.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: Shot in the past, and there's like I think how
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: it works is five and then uh eight, ten and ten.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: X okay, yep, So that was the old IBO rules,
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: so it was a center X in the ten ring.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: And that was when Cabelas had the Nabh and the
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: tour and they broke ties with the xes. And that
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: when I said, when I was fourteen and shot a
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: five hundred. So the five hundred was fifty out of
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: fifty targets, that's all tens, and they did it was
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: an X at that point. But they don't do the
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: X anymore. So the IBO that's in eleven now the
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: center ring is an eleven and asa the lower ring
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: is the twelve. So now it's all bonus rings. There's
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: no X or it's tie breakers are own bonus rings.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: But so five hundred was the highest score I could
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: shoot at that time because there was no bonus rings.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: And so walk folks through the what the range is like,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: like number of targets, how long it takes to shoot
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: the course, how many arrows are gonna shoot?
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so for qualifying and you know, like a major
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: three D event, we'll shoot twenty targets on a Friday,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: twenty targets on Saturday, so forty total. You'll have four
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: to five man groups. Takes about three and a half
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: to four hours to shoot the course and then at
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: the end of that forty targets they take the top
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: five and then we go into the final on Saturday
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: night and then shooting for the wind and shooting so
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: they'll be five in the open pro five and the
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: women pro so down the line.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: Yep. And uh, when you're doing that, is there the
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: no rangefinder thing surprises me, Like that's are you commiserating
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: with other shooters?
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: No?
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: No, no, so you keep what's in your head in
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: your head.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't talk about it, you can't hint about it,
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: you can't do any of that.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: So are you able to observe them closely the targets? No? No,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: are you with the other shooters? Are you standing right
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: next to them?
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Yeah, like we're standing next to each other judge and
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: these yardages and it's just an educated guess. So I'm
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: you keep your judgment to yourself. Oh yeah, for sure,
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: got it. And then you know, it's like you're using everything.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Everybody thinks that they call me a walking rangefinder and
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: I'm not at all, you know, I'm not. I'm like,
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: if you only knew like the numbers that went through
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: my head before I shot that it's it's just a
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: good decision. Like you're listening to how long it takes
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: your competitors era to get there. You're listening and you're
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: using everything around you to like fine tune that window
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: of yardages that it could be. Then you have say,
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: after everybody and after like it's my turn to shoot,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: And I'm like, it could be forty two, it could
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: be forty five. Now I have just to make a
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: smart play with that window of yardages that I think
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: it could be, to definitely stay in the ten and
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: give myself a chance to hit a bonus ring.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I was curious.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: What.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Uh So let's say you're talking in the forty to
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: fifty yard range. Obviously the exact number is helpful. Yeah,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: what what's just like, what's what's a good guess? Let's Lookay,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: the known distance is fifty one yards?
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: Right?
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: What is too far off? With your guests?
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: It depends on where you're aiming if and me personally,
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: I aim at every twelve. I can't help it, like
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: you're shooting for twelve. Yeah, so I have to play
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: my safety with my numbers. So if it's fifty one yards,
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: the perfect play would have been fifty one and a
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: half for me, gives you a little bit of room
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: to make a week shot and still hit a twelve.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: And if I make a perfect shot, I might clip
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: the top of the twelve too, but it definitely keeps
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: me in the tenering.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: And then what what talk about the gear, you guys
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: using what the regulations on gear is?
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: H Yeah, we were allowed you know, buyos, and we're shooting.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Everybody for the most part is shooting a lens in
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: our scopes three to five powers probably the most common.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Back when I was younger, in my early twenties, I
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: won everything with no lens. I just shot an uppen,
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: no lens. But everybody shooting thirty five to forty inch axle, daxelbows,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: long stabilizer deals, you know, very stable platforms for that.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: But no range finders, no electronics, and our buyos, none
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: of that stuff.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: So back tension release shoot.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: I go back and forth between a back tension and
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: a thumb button because target panic still rears its head
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: every once in a while. Dealt with them a whole life,
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: and so I'll shoot a thumb button really light because
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: I shoot that the best. And then when I feel
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: those demons coming on, I switch to a Hinge release
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: and shoot that for a year and then go back
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: and just kind of back and forth.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Uh, talk about what you use for a site.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: So for tournaments, I'm using what's called an excel Achieve
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: and so it's one pin on a mover pretty much
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: for people to hunt.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: And you got to you got to calibrated tape obviously.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Down to the I mean you can set it to
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: the tenth of a yard kid. Yeah, And so like
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: one click is just like so minute. And so it's
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: just a very microadjustable tunable sight and shooting like a
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: ten thous blue fiber so it doesn't starburst. So you
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: can really pinpoint aiming and running a light kit to that,
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: like an LP light that you can dim down so
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: you can have a battery device on there on your bow. Yeah,
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: so you can nothing that projects No, it can't project light.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: It can only be to light your pin.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: And so you know, now these the bows, now we're
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: literally shooting them. I'm shooting pretty much out of the box.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: When I was twenty, you took them apart and rebuilt them.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: You know, you had to know how to pretty much
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: build a bow back then. Limb pockets were sloppy. You
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: were shim and cam shim and Lamb's.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: I should have had a sponsor from JB. Weld when
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I was twenty because that's how I built stuff. So yeah,
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: it's changed for me.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: At what age were you messing with your own bow?
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: I was really lucky to grow up in an area
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: had a ton of really good talent in that western
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: North Carolina circuit. Some of the first guys that won
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: a ton took me under their wings. My dad was
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: really my only coach on the mental and shooting side
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: of things. But I had some really good mentors like
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Scott Cope and an older guy named Dave that that
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: took me under and just showed me how to work
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: on bow and showed me why when things would go wrong, why,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: how to build arrows, how to tune. I would say
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: probably fifteen to twenty. Even though I wasn't competing, I
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: was learning a lot from like the Scott Cope. So
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: eighteen was my rookie year. When I graduated in Scott Cope.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: That year I learned more about bows than I'd ever
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: learned in my entire life from hardships because my rookie
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: year I shot as good as I do now, but
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: it was the little things that I wasn't doing that
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: kept me from winning.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: And little things from a gear standpoint.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Gear standpoint meant, you know, just the way I was
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: attacking the range everything, but yeah, mostly just my setup
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: type stuff.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: What what percent do you think when it comes to
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: success in a tournament? It so it'd be hard to
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: answer what percent is equipment and what percent's mental because
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: everybody's probably got good.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: Gear, right, Yeah, it's it's ninety nine percent mental.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Because because everybody's got to access to the same stuff,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: there's no secrets.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Yeah no, And then you stand on the practice range
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: of the bags, he'll be three hundred shooters and if
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: you said pick, if you can't see the faces just
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: off the groups in the bag, who's going to win?
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: They all look the same. Everybody shoots just as good
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: pretty much even through the amateur ranks at these competitions.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: There's incredible shooters. But it's the little things. And you're
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: plans to.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Back that up for me, tell me that again. So
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: if you walk up and you got three hundred shooters.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: On the back like practice bags, so like there's a
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: bag line.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Like pre tournament practice bags.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and everybody's out there just checking tapes, checking their equipment,
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: and like the top amateurs are shooting groups like gotcha fifty.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: You would be able to stroll down groups and see like, oh,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: this guy's all over play. It's this guy's time.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: I mean occasionally, but for the most part, the people
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: that show up to these tournaments are very top level archers.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Like in a controlled situation, they're gonna all shoot good.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: But it's when you get when that horn sounds and
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: it's for score, you know, that's when everybody starts going away.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: And it's just like the pressure and knowing you can't
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: make a mistake and people's mental approach.
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: It's just those little mental game man, it's gotta be.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: It's insane because you know most sports you have that
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: that adrenaline and spike. Can you use that, like football
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: or baseball or basketball to run faster or hit harder, throw.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Further, crushing gear against your head.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Exactly, and archerie, that's your enemy, Like you got to
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: keep that suppressed, right and.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I got down.
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: So with that being like such a huge factor, like
- 1:09:19Speaker 8: being able to control your stress, how does that translate.
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: Into the deer woods.
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: Do you think it's like, are you more relaxed there
- 1:09:26Speaker 8: than in the tournaments?
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: No, worse, way worse in the deer woods. Yeah, because
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: it's such an uncontrolled environment, you know, and like you
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: don't know how long that deer is going to stand there.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: And I've seen some of the best shooters in the
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: world that couldn't hit a live deer to save their life.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Because of what They just freak out and really freaking out.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: They like I think most I think it's most people's
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: mistake deer hunting is that you feel like it's constantly
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: about to run, you know, and so like I really
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: when we started filming our hunts is when I learned
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: the most about myself and hunting is because I would
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: feel fuels so rushed and make mistakes rushing and then
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: go back and wash it. I'm like, there was so calm, Oh,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: there's nothing to rush for. It was why was I
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: in such a hurry? So I really started to slow
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: myself down. But competitions has made me do that as well,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: just how I mentally approach those big moments and when
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: my bodies tell me to like hurry, hurry, hurry, and
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: how to turn that and just really slow down and
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: hyper focus.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: Do you think doing both helps?
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, for sure, for sure. I Mean I've coming
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: out of my highest stress tournament season in August and
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: right into hunting season in September. And so I think
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: most people bow hunting picked their bow up maybe a
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: month before season, and they haven't felt any pressure, any stress.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: They shoot by themselves in the backyard, and then the
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: first time they're under that is when that deer of
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: a lifetime or big buck or elk is standing in
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: front of them and they just crumble that.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: That stuff about a month before in your yard by
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: yourself really resonated.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: That's just the way it is.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Or I have the high I stressing my kids. I
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: stressed my kids kind of paying at tation.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Yeah. So I'm like, I've had my my eleven year old.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Now I'm trying to like prepare him for hunting season
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: because this is kind of his first full season hunting
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: tree stands with a bow. Yeah, And so I'm out
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: there just putting the pressure on, like he's walking, I'm
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: gonna stop him. I'm like, man like, I'm like make
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: the shot, you know, and then he's failing. And we're
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: learning through that. And because I'm trying to duplicate that
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: feeling for him so that when that happens, he can
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: have success and not be bummed out, because he's very
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: hard on himself anyway.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: So what what what are the gear differences? So shooting tournaments?
- 1:11:40Speaker 8: Is it?
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I used a totally different arrow set up.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, arrows and tournaments are a lot bigger, so
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: we can shoot up to like a twenty seven diameter
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: shaft to cut lines. And that's kind of the purpose.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Oh really yeah, that little yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Because so many days shooting like a even a smaller
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: diameter because I was an interesting point, missed rings by
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: just and you're like.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: So like a thicker arrow just blows a better hole. Yeah,
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: just cuts lines better. And so I mean by thirty
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: seconds of inch minute.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: But I so many tournaments I.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Get sitting right here, man. That's why those are some
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: winners right there.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Well, one of my buddies actually, because there used to
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: be no rule indoors for arrow size, and he took
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: stabilizer bars and made arrows out of him.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: You're kidding, no, I swear.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: And because back then there was a million dollar prize
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: if you didn't miss between three tournaments. You won a
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: million dollars, and that you didn't miss the first two tournaments,
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: and then after that third one you think he missed
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: one or two for the million dollars, and they stable
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: arrow over like the next year you couldn't shoot over
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: a certain size.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: Wow, I didn't.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Oh man, that's a that's a really interesting point. It's
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: like that little bit of diameter.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but the bigger they are, the harder it is
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: to get him to tune. Sometimes.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Sure they get paid for a stiffer Yeah, there's a
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: point at which doesn't help anymore for sure. So what
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: what do you like? What do you like to use
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: to hunt?
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: I use a micro diameter smallest, like a one to
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: sixty six. We actually just finished building a whole platform
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: out of that system because I love the system. I
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: hated all the components that went with them in the past,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: but that's there. I like the really small for penetration
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: cutting the wind.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: What do you like for broadheads?
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: So I shoot? I've shot swackers a two inch expandable
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: for twelve years. Really, yeah, use for everything everything from
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: moose to elk, grizzly bear. I've shot everything with them.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: So Buffalo, the mechanical. But I got a thirty one
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: inch draw shooting seventy eight pounds, and so I'm pushing
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: a lot of energy.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: Oh, with seventy eight pounds hunting with your with your
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: tournament bows, I'd imagine you're pulling less.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: A little seventy two to seventy four pounds tournaments. If
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: you shoot FETA, it's a max of sixty, which is
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: why I don't shoot that a lot. It's just I can't.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: I don't hold sixty pounds well because I never shoot
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: sixty pounds.
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: Is it the same amount of leadoff as you're hunting
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: bow then your tournament bow?
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Yeah, eighty out all the way down to seventy percent tournaments.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: But depending on the way the cams built, Like there's
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: seventy v's or's, you know, just regular seventies, which way
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: the way it falls into that that valley, everybody wants
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: a different feel, and I've just got to wear I
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: like eighty for everything anymore.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: So why do you crank up from going from tournaments
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: to hunting? Why are you cranking up six.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: Pounds because I'm only shooting one arrow hunting, so tall
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: you know, I'm shooting a lot of arrows a day.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I played a long game a little bit.
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: So do you train higher?
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Not really, I mean for tournament season. I'll start like
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: indoor season. I'll be shooting seventy seventy two and then
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: just kind of and that's a lot of arrows at
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: the beginning of the year January February, so by three
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: D season or outdoor season, I'm in great shooting shape.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: And then going into hunting, going up to seventy eight
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: pounds is not a huge huge deal, especially we don't
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: shoot nearly as many arrows, but I like to have
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: that little extra if I can't. This year, I actually
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: had to back off. I couldn't get narrow to tune
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: for the first time. It's that high poundage. A two
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: fifty spine was two weak. So I had to back
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: off my poundage to about seventy five is what I'm
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: hunting with.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: I think, what, what's some of the biggest mistakes you
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: think people make hunting white tails? Shoot? Hitting white tails?
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Now them hitting them? They aim where they want to hit,
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: and you're aiming low. H Hell depends on the distance.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I've heard you talk I've heard you talk about this
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: in the past.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, you know, I think forty yards is
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: the worst. Forty to fifty yards is probably the worst
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: distance to shoot a white tail in my opinion, because
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: they they can hear everything. They can hear the bow,
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: they hear the arrow, but they still have time to react. Yep,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: once you get further than that, they can't hear the
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: bow go off as well. They don't react that jumpy movement.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: And then thirty on under if you're shooting a pretty
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: spast bow, yeah, thirty they can react a little, But
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: at twenty you can pretty much aim where you want
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: to hit for the most part, unless you're hunting like
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: really keyed up South Texas or Texas stuff. You have
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: to know where you're at, you have to know your
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: deer herd, you have to read their language. But normally
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: a good rule is to aim lower third of a
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: white tail, I think, because if you hit, if they
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: don't move, you still shoot them in the heart. And
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: if they drop ten inches, you're gonna hit him in
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: the lungs.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: What's a big drop for a deer loading up to
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: jump and talk about that too, is like the idea
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: of that he like jumped the string. Yeah, like talk
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: about what he's doing.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: They're just crouching to run, you know, but they have
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: to flex their legs to run, and so it looks
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: like they're duck in your arrow, but they're just they're
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: like they're just just getting out of there, you know. Yeah,
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: he's loading up to spring run. Yeah, and so it's
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: just I take all that into consideration. But if they're
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: forty yards, it's dead quiet and they're keyed up. I'm
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: aiming like belly line. Really yeah, they're they're gonna.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: So you're aiming that if he didn't do anything, you're.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: You're in trouble.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: He's gonna do something, But I know you're gonna do something.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: We filmed them on where they will. They not only
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: do they drop, but they also load away from you.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: So there it almost if you're like the other direction. Yeah,
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: so the era, we have video of the arrow just climbing.
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: Literally just as he's falling, the arrow goes almost like
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: a special effect, which is crazy.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: Which kind of makes sense. If they're getting predator's coming,
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: they're gonna want to.
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: White Tail especially doesn't need a reason. I mean, they
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: we hunt other mule deer. I feel a little differently
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: about they always want to check and see what's going on.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: White tail doesn't need a reason and it's just that
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: immediate reaction boom. Yeah, it's insane.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll wheel away and turn like there's so much
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: to take in consideration. And I think people just shoot
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: a deer target a ton, you know, practicing, and they
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: just the tin ring and everything's where they want to
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: hit to double long and then so when that deer
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: comes out, they just put their thirty yard pin right
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: the lungs and shoot and backstrap them or shoot over
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: them or you know. I just think that's the probably
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: the biggest mistake I see people make as far as
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: the shooting aspect of it.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: I'm sure you hot to ask this, take a stab
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: at it? If at what distance? And I know there's
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: all these variables like speed of arrow and all that,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: but let's say it's totally still call them out. At
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: what distance is a deer that's just like because of
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: the noise aspect, at what distance is it just too
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: far to know where it's going to be when the
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: arrow gets there.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: I've seen deer completely move out of the way at forty,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: you know, and then I've seen deer at eighty stand
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: there and never move at all. So it's very hard
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: to say.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: So forty one can be out of the way for sure.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: I mean, depending on the speed of the bow. I mean,
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: I'm talking about three feet from where you were aiming.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: You know, you might hit him in the hip type stuff.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Just a very you know, bow hunting and hunting in
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: general is just very uncontroled, and so you just have
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: to take high percentage shots and then understand that bad
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: things are going to happen every once in a while
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: and you have to deal with it and do your best.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: And so I mean for somebody to say, I've both
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: hunted my whole life, never made a bad shot, never
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: called Yeah, I'm saying like that doesn't happen. You know,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: I called every you know, situation exactly as it was
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: going to happen. It's just doesn't It's not the way
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: it is.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: If somebody tells you that, they're probably they're probably full
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: of it.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, But I feel really comfortable shooting a white till,
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Like I love that sixty to eighty range because they
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: don't move a lot, got it, And I still feel
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: very comfortable shooting. But I mean, I've dedicated my life
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: to that I.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Think that's your businessman.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and so that forty to fifty makes me most
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: nervous shoot because they're never where they were when I
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: the release fires.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Huh. So it's like, where's he going to go talk
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: about your aiming proce? You're not aiming at brown? No, no, no.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: My dad taught me, like, so I missed a lot
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: of deer when I was hunting those game lands from
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: that when I said I started hunting it like started
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: shooting at him at like eight, and then I killed
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: my first one at twelve. Well, that four year span
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: was not pretty, and so my dad really started that's
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: what I was doing, like just put pins on it
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: and shoot. And so he really like drove it into
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: my head that I got to pick a hair. He's like,
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: you have to pick a hair on that deer that
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: you want to hit. You know, it's old saying aim small,
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: miss small, but that was his way of telling me, like,
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: don't just aim at the deer. It's a good way
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: to miss. And it's still true to this day. In tournaments,
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: I take that aiming at the ten is a good
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: way to shoot an eight, you know, aiming at the
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: twelve is a good way to shoot a ten You
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: got to aim at something way smaller than that. So
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: if you miss, you're still good. And so that's the
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: way I still approach that is like I want to
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: pick the ventricle of the heart. I want to aim
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: at you know that type of guy.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: So that's how you're thinking about it.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I think about it.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: And that's an interesting deal. You can see people might
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: people that don't shoot bows, uh, might get this from
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: just shut sighting your rifle at a range. Like if
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: you're just trying to zero you gun in to one
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: hundred yards, shoot a bullet hole and then use that. Yeah,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and you'll watch your group shrink down for sure. Like
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: if you if you got a one circle on a
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: target and you're trying to see what your group is, like,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: just never mind that, aim at a bullet hole. Yeah,
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: and you'd be like, oh, because you know, I don't
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: know what is going on. It's just like that that
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: level of precision, you know, Or shoot an arrow and
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: aim at the nock. That's your focus, yeah, and give
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: it like try to find something. But the hard part,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you know, I could do that all day long, or
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I'll go and take whatever you know, take a little
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: bit of blue masking tape and kind of tucking in something.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: But deer running around the woods they don't have that.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: They don't have blue masking tape. So how are you like? Look,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: what do you think? What do you like? Actually, if
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: you if you had to analyze what's probably occurring in
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: your head in a very quick sense, like what are
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: you actually looking at? You know, I mean when you're
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: looking at that deer's by what are your eyes going to?
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: So I think this is where three D tournaments has
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: helped me so much, because we're aiming at a target
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: and you can't see the rings. There are no dots,
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: there's no it's a blank deer target. You just have
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: to know, like you find the rings with bios and
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: then you get very good at aiming off of shadows
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: and just little detailed differences. And so for me on
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: a deer, like, I think first and foremost you have
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: to know the anatomy of a deer and an animal really.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Well, let's do it. Then it's a forty yard shot.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Okay, forty yard shot perfectly broadside. I am going to
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: give myself and it's all just for me. It's giving
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: myself the most room for error, human error, the deer
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: moving everything, so forty yards perfectly broadside. I'm gonna pick
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: that spot just behind the elbow, about two inches an
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: inch and a half two inches up in the deer maybe,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: and I'm going to burn my forty yard pin about
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: an inch or two behind that crease, and knowing that
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: deer is gonna move.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Yeah. See that's the thing there, man, it's like not
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: that like I wonder if it will, but you just
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: like it will. It's gonna be. Yeah.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Now, if the wind's blowing forty it's raining, he's looking
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: the other way. He's chasing a dough. Everything changes that.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: I almost messed up last year in Mississippi. The buck
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: was chasing a dough out of a cane. Thinket it's quiet,
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: So in my mind I'm thinking he's gonna he's gonna drop.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: But when they're that keyed up and run it up
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: on a dough, they don't hear anything.
- 1:23:20Speaker 8: You can.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: You could scream at him. They ain't paying attention. And
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: I hit him in that inch above, right behind the
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: crease and hit the heart, bottom of the heart. But
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: it's he didn't move, and it scared me to death.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: You know, when I shot and he just stood there
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: and took it, I was like, oh man, but in
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: a normal scenario, they're gonna duck five to ten inches
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: at forty yards?
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Are there shots? And let's keep it like, let's let's
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: keep it forty or you know, forty or so Let's
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: say you got a buck and he comes in, he
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: gets like semi down when and he just knows something
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: isn't right, you know, works as are you thinking, like,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: no way, he's too keyed up? Are you just playing
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you just playing on you just plan on that? Then yeah,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: like this dude is a flight risk at when the
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: string board for sure?
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: For sure? Then then I think I think there is
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: a time where you just have to say it's not
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: it's not going to work. You know, if he's that
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: keyed up looking at you at sixty, it's probably not
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: a good you'll make.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: You might make the call not to do it.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but forty I think you can still make
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: the play. He can duck, but he you know, it's
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: it's just such a situational thing.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I'm.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: Thinking of the average hunter here. Yeah, you're you're the
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: best in the world. Okay, we've established with much Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: I pounded the table, that's right.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: But you were able to take.
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: Your mind through a thought process and a very intense situation. Yeah,
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: the average guy realistically like twenty five yards maybe thirty.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: Right, I think, you know, the high percentage stuff. Yeah,
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: I think the average guy can get efficient enough to
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: shoot fifty sixty yards and be very good. The problem
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: is you in the white too, which you have to
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: be able to process and take in so much information
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: and then make a good decision with it like that,
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: And that's the hard part, is making good decisions in
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: those moments. And it's like, I think it's why so
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: many people just make bad shots, or if they would
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: have just been able to process that a little quicker,
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: you know. So I think, yeah, I think most guys,
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: you know, bow hunting was growing up, was always a
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: forty and under game, you know, And that's the way
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: it just was. And it's just this unspoken rule. It
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: was like nope, no, it's like can't I don't have
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: a pin over fifty yards? And I never did growing
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: up because I was on the East Coast. We couldn't
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: shoot further in that anyway. Yeah, But when I started hunting,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: out west. It's when I really it opened my eyes
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: up to this long range bow hunting stuff. I showed
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: up an Analop camp with Tim Gillingham, who's another one
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: of the best in the world shooters, and I had
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: a fifty yard pen and that was it. And he
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: laughed at me, like out loud, good luck, Like yeah,
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: good luck, You're not going to kill an aneloe. He
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: told me that straight to my face, and so I
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: proved him wrong. Made it a point that I will
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: get to within fifty yards in one of these things.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: But I realized really quickly, like Okay, if I'm going
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: to be successful out west consistently, I've got to learn
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: to shoot further for the white tail stuff. You do
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: not have to shoot past fifty yards to be successful.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Maybe that's why I've had such a hard time out here.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: It's hard, man.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: It is just shoots homemade bows.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: Oh really, yeah, I used to a lot more. I
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: haven't had a lot of time, but I used to
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: build bows.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: But you might know about Chess. He has a bowl company,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: not anymore more, he did.
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: I wanted to tell you a story about Aim Small.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: That I can't argue with that he's got an arrow
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: tattooed on his arm.
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: One day. This is just a real quick story out
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: in the elkwoods. I get out there and I always
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: shoot in a couple of arrows with I have a
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: judo point. So I'm at about fifteen yards and I
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: pick out a little rock and I shoot. I just
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: miss it. I'm like, all right, that's pretty good, you know,
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: I'm happy with that. I walk down the trail a
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: little bit. I see a grouse about fifteen yards. I
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: aim at it, shoot at it, just miss it.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Then a little while later that day have a bull
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: come in about twenty yards, perfectly broadside shot, all nervous,
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: aim at it, just miss it. But it just goes
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: to show you. It's like, come on, man, I can
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: hit my target.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: At twenty yards, focus gets bigger, everything exactly.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's set. That's this weird thing, man. I like
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: there's so many, God, there's so many like failure stores.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: There's so many failure stories that when I'm trying to
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: explain this to people, like the sort of you know,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: like the egg and you of trying to learn how
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: to kill elk with a bow, Like we started hunting.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: I started hunting deer with the bow when I was little,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: and it was just different because you know, during bow season,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: be like we did shoot any deer you could possibly
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: get a chance at, you know, But how hard it
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: was to learn how to kill elk with a bow.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I remember when I finally killed a bowl, I killed
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: a couple of coles, and I finally killed a bull
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: in my bow and hit it through the heart and
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: it didn't even really move and died. I thought I
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: was hallucinating. I was like, it's it's easier to imagine
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: that I'm in a hallucinatory state than it is to
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: imagine that that just fell over it. I'll buy that, Like,
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: that's that's more. That makes more sense that I better
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: to hallucinatory state. But I think that that's like if
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: you review all the bad like when you review the
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: bad shots, you know, and I review the bad shots
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: I made on my bow, and when I review the
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: good ones and I review the bad ones, the bad ones,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: you recognize that you don't know what But there was
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: a lack of certainty. There was a there was a
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: a flash of like, let's see what happens, or a
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: flash of I hope this works out, or you better
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: do this, they're right yep. And when it's not, it's
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: that you review and your how do you like no, no, no,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: that's right. Like I went like no, no, no, calm down, yeah,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and I placed the arrow there was no who knows, no,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: that's the.
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: One hundred percent. I mean, it's so funny because I
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: try to tell people all the time. They're like, how
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: do you in those moments where even tournaments where everything
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: is on the line, Like, how do you not let
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: like all the negative like what could go wrong? Stuff in?
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: Because that's what happens. It's like like the skier analogies
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: like don't hit the tree. Don't hit the tree, you
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: hit the tree. You know, what you're focused on is
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: is very important?
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: You know, you have a There's so many different things
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: and ways and that people teach. Do you do you
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: have a process?
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: I you know, I won a lot of tournaments before
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: I really really realize what I had a process and
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: those those and I've watched a lot of people and
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: I think I just got a little bit lucky too
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: as far as having that. My dad was a really
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: good mental coach, tough tough love type mental coach, but
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: he was very invested in me being able to perform
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: in high pressure. And so it's like I never really
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: had a way to word it until recently. And I
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: don't know if you guys have heard of Joel Turner
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: with the shot I Q to keep it, yeah, like,
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: but it was the way he explained it to me
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: over the phone that really made it make sense what
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: I did, Like what I was talking about slowing down
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: those those big moments, because when you get in that moment,
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: even in tournaments, you just want the result now, like
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: or when that big bull Elk steps up, like I
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: want it now. I want to I want to see
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: my arrow hit it now instead of just letting your
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: process just just you know, organically happen. So I was
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: always able to slow down in those moments, but I
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: didn't know why. And I always saw people that performed
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: better in high pressure and I didn't know why. But
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: when Joel explained to me like this, He's like, leave,
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: how much determination would it take for you to walk
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: through a house that was on fire, like slowly walk
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: through it? I said, it was a lot of determination
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: for me to do that, you know, And you said, well,
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: that's what your mind's going through in those moments, and
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: he's right. And so once you start looking at it
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: like that, because everything feels like it's on fire and
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: you just want to run through that moment, you have
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: to learn how to do.
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: Like you said, like you want it so bad, yes,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: like this what you worked.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: For, this opportunity right now, this arrow, whether like this
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: year's shooting for Worlds, Like my whole season came down
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: to that arrow, and everything in me wanted to just
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: get to the result now. But I literally that was
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: probably the slowest arrow I shot all year because I was.
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: Like, this double this is the last era of Worlds, Yes.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: The final ara. I put up on my Instagram a
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: video of me shooting that, and I didn't like in
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: the moment, I look so calm, but inside I was
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: on fire, you know, because everybody's always like, dude, you
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: are just made of ice, You like ice water in
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: your veins. I'm like, no, I am freaking out inside.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: I just looked that way. And so it was really
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: really a slow, methodical process. And if you'd have looked
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: at me at nineteen twenty, I was still winning a lot.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: But the more nervous I got, the faster I shot,
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: And so the older I've gotten, I've realized really important
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: it is for me to slow down the more nervous
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: I get.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: And what does that look like? Walk walk through what
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: looks like to slow yourself down? Now what it looks like?
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: But I mean, are you are you literally talking to yourself? Yes? Okay,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: you're lecturing yourself?
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Yes, on where I want to hit I'm gonna hit here,
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: I'm gonna aim here. This is what's gonna happen. I'm
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: gonna shoot it for this, I'm double checking my site tape.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: I'm gonna execute slowly and steady and just really affirming
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: every positive thing that I'm going to do, not like
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: what could happen if I don't do this, Because I've
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: had tournaments where I let those thoughts in and it's
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: you just collapse and it's over what thoughts? So like
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: everybody's everybody's looking like this is your whole season comes
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: down to this. You know there's one hundred thousand dollars
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: on the line. You know you haven't won in three tournaments.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: Those thoughts, you know, after the phone call from some
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: of your biggest endorsements of like, hey, what's your practice
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: routine looking like lately? Looks like everybody's doubting you, I think,
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: and you're washed up. Oh I've heard it all.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: It's like, oh man, I'll be like, yeah, I gotta run.
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: It's like it's I've been like those stretches in your
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: career where it's like you just can't get it. You
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: just right there and just like five in a row
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: where you don't you don't win, and it's just like
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: everybody's like, oh he lost it. You hear the buzz
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: and it's like, Okay, I gotta shut all that up
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: and figure it out. And I think just and then
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: I think that's why you see in a lot of
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: sports the guys that dominate and then they just go
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: away because it's that expectation that of other people and
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: then you put on yourself. That cloud just follows you everywhere.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: And it's a very uncomfortable feeling.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: What's old for a tournament shooter.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: Some of the guys that are in their fifties still
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: shooting incredibly. You play a long time, Yeah, so I could.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: I don't know that I will hold you. I'm thirty six,
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: But do you know a decade if you felt like right, yeah,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: I mean, if my eyes the main thing is your eyes.
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: Is that?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Is that what the limiting factor is.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so a lot of the guys have had you know,
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: different surgeries and kept their eyes really good. My eyes
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: are still great. They change every year, but I can
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: still see very well.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: What's you deal with stuff like coffee?
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I drink coffee every morning, so I tournament shooting,
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: I just could try to limit it until after, but
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: I am like addicted to caffeine badly, So.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: That's just factored in. Oh yeah, it's gonna be coffee.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: Well, the first thing I think of whenever I shoot
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: that final arrow that day is like I'm getting an
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: energy drink from the closest gas station I come to
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: after this. Yeah, but I keep it to a minimum
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: and try to eat easy digestible foods. Yeah, give me
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: an example, like now through something like that for breathers.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: I don't want like steak and eggs, you know, just
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: because literally you can see when your body's working that
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: hard to digest food. You can see your pin moving,
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: your heartbeat.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: It's like, you know, man, it wasn't until I never
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: got it from Archie. It wasn't until I got into
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: free diving Spirit official and free diving. Like my friend
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Greg fonce, He's like, if something's wrong with you, this
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: is where you find out right and noticing the effects
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: of because you're just trying to do breath holds and
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: become conscious of your heart, noticing the effects of what
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: you've eaten, what you drank, the hydration stress. I never
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: applied and I should. I never applied that type of
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: thinking to marksmanship, right, like shooting my rifle, shooting my bow.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: I'll be like laying on the surface right for a dive,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: and once I close my eyes, I'm like, you're not
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: ready to go. You're not ready, Like I could, you know,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: I can like hear my heart beating in my ear, yeah,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: which you shouldn't, right, you know, And I'll be like chill.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: But I never you know, I would never think to
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: be sitting in the tree stand and be like, all right, uh,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: you better tone it down, right, Yeah, you know that's that,
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Like you better like just take a second, tone it down,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: you know, let's check in. Let's check in a little
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: bit on what we're doing.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: Definitely, there's a lot of things you can do to
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: slow your heart rate. You know, I've learned all that
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: shooting in the World Cup because I've never been under
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: that much pressure, like shooting for the US in England
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: and against other countries and stuff like that. It was
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: like this immense pressure and for I was like this
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: total redneck that went over there because everybody like you
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: should go shoot in the World Cup. And then I
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: was like, I guess, you know. So I flew to
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: England and pretty soon I was the last standing American
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: and I was like, oh my god, my whole country's counting.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: On the lee Greenwood yelling.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Just rolled through through all my buddies and now it's
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: me and some guy from the Netherlands and they're like
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: blowing air horns in my ear, and I'm like, Jesus
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: is wild over here.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: So when you see a buck coming, let's say, like
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: a buck you've really been after, Yeah, and he's coming.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: He's still way out, but he's coming, he's lined out.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Do you are you conscious about what?
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: Like?
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: Are you practicing the same mental discipline like this is gonna.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: Happen right right?
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: So are you go like okay, I'm gonna know, yeah,
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: getting my headspace. Are you just in the hunting game and.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: You're not playing like I'm not nearly as good in
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: that moment as I am at a tournament, just because
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: in a tournament, I know exactly what's gonna take place
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: for the most part, like I got twenty targets to shoot,
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: and then once I'm in the finals, I can make
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: a plan like this is my strategy.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Target's not gonna with you, no, I.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Mean hunting, you might hunt for two weeks and you
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: get lulled asleep and all of a sudden, boom, there
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: he is. He's coming, and so you don't have that.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: I mean, ideally you stay sharp and if he comes
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: on this trail, like that's what I try to do.
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: If he comes from here, this will be my plan.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: If he comes from here, this is what I'm gonna do.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: But I mean, you get caught off guard all the time,
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: and so it's for me, it's just focusing again on
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: what I want to happen, how I want to execute,
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: and not focusing on all the negative that can go wrong.
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: But hunting, I my heart rate, everything is so elevated
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: from tournaments. It's just I love it, and I like,
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: you work so hard for that opportunity and you don't
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: know what's coming.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: When because you're a walking range finder. Do you uh,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: what do you what are you doing with deer?
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: Oh? I range everything? Yeah, that thing's in my hand constantly.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Got it? So what do you get up the tree?
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: You start ranging trees and yeah, and when you visualize
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: all your shot, like are you like, okay, I a
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: picture shooting through that gap?
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: I pick?
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: Are you doing all that kind of stuff?
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: If he comes on that trail, I hit that limb
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: over like everything, I'm trying to pick it apart when
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: I get in a tree.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: But even then could be this way, it could be
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: that way.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: But like used to, I'd range a tree like that
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: one's forty, that one's fifty one. So if he's between it,
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: all kind of try to gauge it. But I learned myself,
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: and like you black out a lot in those moments,
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: right yep, and it's right there and then you're like, wait,
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: what was that trig?
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: So now I'm I'm constantly got my rangefinder, and so
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: like I want to click it and like when I
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: until he breaks under thirty, then I'll put it up.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: You know, how do you hang your rangefinder?
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: I've got the you know, the chest binos and then
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: the rangefinder holds yeah, pouch, And so like, if he's
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: walking broadside, I'm going to click him, click and click
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: him because I want to I need that exact for
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: me to aim that small and focus that small in
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: my head. I need to know exactly how far he is. Right,
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: If you're like he's forty between forty and forty six,
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: it's very hard to aim an inch up in him.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like, you're kind of pretending, right, you're aiming,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: So for me, I mentally, I need to know, like
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: he's forty two point three. So I'm like, okay, I'm gonna.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: But are you shooting set pins?
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: Then when you're hunting, you know, I got twenty thirty, forty,
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: fifty sixty and then it's on a mover and I
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: use my bottom pin as the gotcha.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: So a lot of your shots you're shooting off pins?
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: And are you are you splitting gaps or yeah?
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: You do? Yeah, yeah, And it's just a practice thing.
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: And explain gapping real quick for people who are listening.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: So like, if you if he's fifty four yards and
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: you got a fifty and a sixty, you're splitting that
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: where an imaginary fifty four yard panalby. So you put
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: your fifty high or sixty low and try to gap
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: that where exactly where it needs to be. And that's
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: an art and that takes a lot of practice.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: This is it's another thing to think about, man, it is.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: So that's like one thing that you got to be
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: really in tune with your stuff.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: I was trying to get my kid a shot at
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: a deer to syear at his bow this his first year,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: you know, And and I was just like a guy where, Okay,
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: we're not gonna shoot more than twenty, you know, and
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: if you get a shot, like just that's the that's
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: the thing, you know. And I feel like I was
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: limiting and I was just trying to simplify it. Yeah, right,
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: I was trying to simplify it. I'm like, it doesn't
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: matter if I say, go, that's the green thing. Put
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: it there. Don't worry about all this other because he
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: likes to shoot the league. And I'm like, I just
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: want you to put a lot of that out of
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: your head. Let's just try to practice on close shot,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: good shot, you know.
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a good thing. That's the same
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: way I'm doing with mine. We practiced out the thirty
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: and I've got him like putting him in situations. But
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: I already told him. I said, if it's over twenty,
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: it's no go.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Yeah. We sat down and I showed him, you know,
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: I was showing him like that that tree, if it's
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: coming on that trail, that tree, not before that tree.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: But that treat is time and it's the green bear
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: or whatever. The just keep it simple.
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: I grew up with the compound, Yeah, real cheap one
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: started hunting with traditional bows. It's like so difficult. Recently
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: I had a I was given a compound and got
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: it all set up. Holy cow.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: Cow work. Did they work real good?
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: You know, especially having like it's a little definitely little
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: different mechanics, but having like good good mechanics and understanding
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: back tension and things like that. Grabbing a compound and
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: then being able to wrap relax a little bit at
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: full draw was a big thing for me because I
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: was wanting to like rip it apart, rip it apart.
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: But like after that, like I was just like, you've
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: got to be kidding.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I have a long bow, dude, and and I haven't
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: ruled out that someday. I'm like I put in a
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: PVC too with a cap on it and put it
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: deliberately like in like mental storage. And I've so many
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: times almost taken some of that stuff and put it
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: on the free table here at work because someday you
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: might return to it. But right now I just don't
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: have the time, discipline, or dedication to do it. But someday,
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: I'm like, I could picture someday in my old man
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: era picking that out and being like, all right, man,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: now we're gonna do it. I've been asked that a lot,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: like when are you gonna Didn't it too easy?
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: I'm like, nope, Like I do. I respect people to
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: do that because I'm like, I would be scared to
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: death to take a long bow out for fun.
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: I have.
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: I'm not very good to be, to be honest with you,
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: I've done it a long time, and the more I
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: do it, the more scared I get. Yeah with it,
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: which sucks, But I've just seen a lot happen.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's how that won a tournament with my longbow. No,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: but in my age class it was only me and
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: one other kid gotcha.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Well, win's a win.
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: Yeah, It's just it was just like my brother, he
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: was the best in his in his uh sixth grade class.
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: I beat this one boy, only one in his class.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: They're fun to shoot, Yeah, I just man, And.
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: There's a time and place.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Like, so what would happen to you if you went in?
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: What would have happened to you if you, knowing what
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: you knew, went and shot?
- 1:44:06Speaker 9: Uh?
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Like Olympic style? Gosh, have you ever messled it?
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: No?
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Never.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: Some of my good friends Brady Ellison probably the best
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: American Olympic shooter there there ever was. I've hunted with him.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: He's a great guy, but I'd have no idea where
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: to start.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: Recurve.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Yeah, just a recurve with pins and fingers and clickers,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: and I just I got I got nothing. But he's unbelievable.
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: Like he shoots as good as a lot of the
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: compound professionals with his recurve.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Is he a hunter?
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: What's he hunt with?
- 1:44:39Speaker 9: Uh?
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: He hunts with a compound, does he? Yeah? Yeah? And
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: he can shoot with a compound like very well. Yeah,
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: but he has to shoot like forty percent let off
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: because he's so used to that. Oh the wall, the
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: tension just building, is that right? Yeah? Whenever it like
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: breaks over, it freaks him out.
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: You can't jump from the one to the other.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: Huh Yeah, I mean maybe now time I shot with
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: him is when I.
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: Shot that bowl, that compound, I couldn't let it down.
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you had that much tension built.
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, it was like he's like let it down.
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, like.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: Like it's like suspenseful.
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: Have you ever had Do you ever get jumpy from
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: like gear malfunctions? No, like you have you have like
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: the string junk the cam or like a problem with
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: the release or whatever, then all of a sudden it's
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: like some kind of like demon enters your head.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: I have with mostly with release malfunction, you know, stuff
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: that's really big because it just takes you so much
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: out of your shot process, and then every time you're
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: drawing the bow back for like the next hundred draws,
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: you're thinking about it.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Yeah. I've had I've had that where I've had I've
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: been rattled by it and a lot of self afflicted.
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: Like I had a bowl one time. I flew with
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: it in a hard case, but I didn't even think
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: to check it out. Yeah, and I had no idea,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: But I don't know what someone jumped up down on
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: and drove a plane over it. I don't know, right, Yeah,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: just bent the hell out of the top the upper cam. Yeah,
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: pulled it back flop. Oh yeah, dude. It's just then
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: you're like, well, I'll be living with that for a
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: long time. Like it's just so hard to like it
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: is something in the back of your head doesn't trust
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: the bow. Yeah, and you got to shoot through that.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: You know that stuff is that derails you?
- 1:46:19Speaker 8: Man.
- 1:46:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: I've been very lucky in tournaments to not or hunting, uh,
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: to not have too much of that stuff going. I
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: did a major event one time have a release miss
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: malfunction and sent one down through the woods on the
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: second target of the final day, and that was tough
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: to recover from, was it? Yeah? I almost won the tournament,
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: but it was It was just a tough mental obstacle
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: That aarrow cost you.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it cost me.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: You'll get a mulligan.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: No, you move on, and I would. The funny thing
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: was I was shooting with a so at the time,
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: I was in a peer group, the top pier group,
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: with the pro staff coordinator for that release company. When
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: it shot, I couldn't even yell at the release or
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: do anything. I just had to shove it down in
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: my palch and get a new one and go to
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: the next one.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: So yeah, that's good.
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: It's really the only time that's happened to me. Cost
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: me big time.
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: Anyway, You got any uh, you got any tournament shooters
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: coming up next generation?
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, a ton of them, keeping those young guys
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: beat down the hardest parts, putting doubts in their mind,
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: messing with.
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: What I was referring to. It might be the same
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: answer I was referring to your kids.
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: Oh no, I don't think so. My kid he literally
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: looked me right in the eye and said, I'm never
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: gonna shoot tournaments. So like, okay, that's as clear as
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: I needed, you know.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: But he HeLEX me outdoors the competitive fishing.
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: He's he's the most competitive. My oldest is the most
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: competitive human being. It's like I'm trying to work with
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: him because it's like, if like I beat him. There's
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: some videos that I should post of him at like
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: five where I was like beat him at air hockey
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: and he would lose his mind and I'd make him
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: shake my hand and tell me good job, and he
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: did not want to do it, Like really.
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: He was like, like, you're gonna shake my hand and
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: look me in the eyes, you know that kind of stuff.
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: But he's a baseball kid right now. Loves it and
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: he loves the bass fish so bess fish. Yeah, loves it.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: So he'll get up at four am every day to
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: go bass fish.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: So that's cool. Yeah, art now, or what do you
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: try your kids?
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: I got eleven, one's about to turn six. Then I've
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: got eighteen month old little girl and then a four
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: month old little boy, So I don't know with my
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: My six year old is just wild. He says he
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: wants to hunt, but he won't practice. He's just that kid.
- 1:48:40Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Man, Yeah, it's hard. It's hard to picture what in practice.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: And it's so funny how different they are. But he's
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: he's my comedian for sure.
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:48:50Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: Well, tell people how to find you, how to check
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: out your stuff, how to find you on social media whatever.
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I am on Instagram mostly bow Life, Underscore Levi.
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: We have a showing the outdoor channel bow Life, and
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: then we're doing a lot of stuff on YouTube now
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: on Levi on Morgan YouTube and the Levi on Morgan
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: dot Com. Uh and that's pretty much all the places.
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: I will be and you can shoot tournaments next year.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: That's the plan. I haven't quit yet, No, not yet,
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: not yet. I'm gonna I still don't feel finished quite yet.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: How many, like, at what point? At what year mark
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: are you undecided? You know what I'm saying? Five forty years?
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: You know, I wanted to be done by forty, okay,
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: just because the age of my kids will be and
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: I've just been gone a lot and I just want
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: to be there with my kids. Yeah, during that span
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: because I shoot like seventeen major events a year, so
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: it's a lot. And this last trip that I left
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: just gets harder every time. You know, my eleven year
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: old ball and his eyes out and it was just tough.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't do that stuff, man, It's hard. It
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: takes a toll on you, man.
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: Yeah. And I sat in the driveway crying myself for
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: like an hour, like what am I doing? So I
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: don't know how much? Literally, you know, I love the
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: competitiveness of it, but at some points, like how many
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: you need to win? And before you know, I just
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: want to I don't want to be that dad that's gone.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Being gone's tough. Man, if you have, like, we run
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: like a tight program at my house, and so I
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: like when I'm gone, I'm not worried. Yeah you know
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: what I mean, Like I'm not worried about what's going on.
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I said, it's a tight show. Yeah, like very
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: controlled program. But it's just nice to be home.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: It is nice. Yeah, it's nice.
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: I'm just starting to get a taste of that.
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's not like you're worried. I'm not like worried.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: It's just like I want, like I just want to
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: be Yeah, exactly, face you want to be part of
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: the mix.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: Man you have how old?
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: Just got a brand new one.
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: He's going to be a year October nineteenth. He looks
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: he's a tiny little bugger. Yeah, he's actually here in
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: the office right now. We got to make things work.
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: I just left him in my office.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: There.
- 1:50:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: I remember like when when Landa was a baby, I
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: was like, this isn't too bad. It's hurt, but when
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: they start crying when you leave, that's the heart that's
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: the hardest.
- 1:51:02Speaker 4: Where he doesn't quite Yeah, you're almost there.
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: Yeah, let's not stand on the sad.
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, for sure, I do get to go
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: home today. So that's that's a good note.
