- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Not Another Football Podcast with myself,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Simon Dnley and Jackie Muck Tomara, and we're delighted to
- 0:10Speaker 1: have another brilliant guest. Was in a cab how you
- 0:13Speaker 1: do comedian?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Let me tell you nineteen ninety six, sixteen year old
- 0:18Speaker 2: me would never believe that this was happening. I mean,
- 0:21Speaker 2: I never had a crush in any of you. I
- 0:22Speaker 2: think that's quite completely obvious, right, but I can't believe
- 0:26Speaker 2: it nineteen ninety six. I started going to the football
- 0:29Speaker 2: in nineteen nine, nineteen eight eight, and then seriously season
- 0:36Speaker 2: last season either won the game in the first twenty
- 0:40Speaker 2: or won it in the last minutes. Incredible and I
- 0:43Speaker 2: and then I had the early part of the nineties,
- 0:46Speaker 2: I actually had a signed picture of you in my room,
- 0:49Speaker 2: a wee picture of you and John Collins, and it
- 0:51Speaker 2: was from a guy called Eric Dawes who used to
- 0:56Speaker 2: coach at Celtic, and it goes through your two favorite
- 1:00Speaker 2: players that I went Simondley joined Collins and he got
- 1:02Speaker 2: me two same pictures. Eyes met never met, never ever
- 1:06Speaker 2: met up. And then I mean just lived through that
- 1:10Speaker 2: whole nineties. But then obviously that team I seen Jackie
- 1:14Speaker 2: play every position that he ever played, playing goalkeeper. You
- 1:20Speaker 2: know because you did, didn't you?
- 1:23Speaker 1: It was everything barble keeper?
- 1:25Speaker 2: You right back, right midfield? Did you play? You played center?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Mud because I remember thinking when we won the league
- 1:32Speaker 2: in ninety eight and our last World Cup, it was
- 1:34Speaker 2: a travesty that that midfield was broken up because it
- 1:39Speaker 2: was you, Burnley and Lambert and he broke it up
- 1:42Speaker 2: and he dropped you and put McAllister in that.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I mean that ninety eight was the only season that
- 1:50Speaker 3: I played. I wouldn't play the year that year. Never
- 1:52Speaker 3: played it again rightfield under we m I ten years
- 1:57Speaker 3: my whole career, never played that position again.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Is that right? Because I I remember it vividly because
- 2:04Speaker 2: you'd move you being a right back, didn't you? And
- 2:06Speaker 2: he moved you further up the pitch.
- 2:08Speaker 1: He didn't like.
- 2:08Speaker 3: He didn't like his fullbacks getting forward. So like I
- 2:12Speaker 3: lost my place after the second game, may it be
- 2:15Speaker 3: off and flaming home. First game I lost to Hibs,
- 2:17Speaker 3: I used to.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Points after two demanded to the sack.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Then you would would have been getting his head hunted
- 2:27Speaker 1: after again. But I wanted to see him.
- 2:28Speaker 3: He's like, I don't he didn't want his fullbacks and
- 2:31Speaker 3: that was my whole game. Everybody, So if you're not
- 2:35Speaker 3: doing it, everybody thinks you're holding back your energy and
- 2:39Speaker 3: then fortunately get an opportunity.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Was similar to your game.
- 2:44Speaker 3: F C. Trolla came on in the European game and
- 2:47Speaker 3: I started against Liverpool.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Right remember that that was. Remember what an absolute heartbreaker.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I remember. I used to sit behind the goals and
- 2:59Speaker 2: then I've aventually moved round to the north stand. But
- 3:02Speaker 2: I'll never forget just shouting just take the booking stops you.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And it was. It was Big Alan when I was fixed.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Big Martin at the half way line. And then as
- 3:16Speaker 1: it closes in, you're looking for anybody to get a bit.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I talk about that. See that night. But two to one,
- 3:22Speaker 1: we were pushing for three one and their move actually
- 3:25Speaker 1: starts was coming down on our right hand side and
- 3:28Speaker 1: it gets flashed across the box. Nobody's there and that's
- 3:31Speaker 1: when that starts to catch us in the counter. It's
- 3:33Speaker 1: all I finish. Its ultimately the goal that puts it.
- 3:37Speaker 2: If you're if you're going to get put it by
- 3:40Speaker 2: a goal, get put it because he he whipped his
- 3:44Speaker 2: I'll never forget it at the back of the neck
- 3:46Speaker 2: and just being like, how could we have played this well?
- 3:49Speaker 1: And then galvanized us that that kind of got us
- 3:52Speaker 1: because there was a lot there was about eight nine
- 3:54Speaker 1: new players, and that was the moment I thought, you
- 3:57Speaker 1: know what, but actually on something, here was no bad team.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That was a decent Liverpool.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It was a good Liverpool team. I and then and
- 4:04Speaker 2: then obviously that was the the New Year game went
- 4:07Speaker 2: at the Burley Lambert goals when picked them up, you
- 4:10Speaker 2: get that, I don't care how good you go them get.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Don't believe will save that night?
- 4:16Speaker 2: And all I did the first half we Harald.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Remember even before after you said two brilliant goals to but.
- 4:27Speaker 4: It kind of that's what you had to do as well,
- 4:29Speaker 4: because you look back now, I think if we had
- 4:32Speaker 4: to get the result, Rangers were moving, yeah in the
- 4:35Speaker 4: distance there a bit points wise, you had had to
- 4:37Speaker 4: win that game, yea.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And I wonder what the psychological damage would have been
- 4:42Speaker 2: if Rangers had won the ten, like we've lost a ten, right,
- 4:48Speaker 2: but we won a nine and then we won another
- 4:50Speaker 2: nine and in that thus quadruple trebles and all this
- 4:53Speaker 2: kind of stuff. I wonder what the psychological damage would
- 4:57Speaker 2: have been to the club if we hadn't stole. Because
- 5:01Speaker 2: watching the game the other day with the Hearts and
- 5:05Speaker 2: Rangers and looking at the Hearts fans, I was going
- 5:08Speaker 2: kind of reminds me that stop the ten season. But
- 5:11Speaker 2: all you could do was thinking about it was all encompassing,
- 5:15Speaker 2: like you could beat her. What they were like, I wonder,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I wonder who we're going to play this week, and
- 5:20Speaker 2: I don't know if I would. I don't know if
- 5:22Speaker 2: I go up against him. And I remember they've done
- 5:24Speaker 2: Fermline game and I was working and I was working
- 5:27Speaker 2: in a pub at the time, and do you remember
- 5:31Speaker 2: say it was a Sunday game. Remember the kind of
- 5:33Speaker 2: sauce pots you used to get. It was on a
- 5:35Speaker 2: kind of handle and it was a faultner folcon Bridge,
- 5:40Speaker 2: falcon Bridge, Scottish heather.
- 5:44Speaker 1: No.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I was watching the teley and just loved it. And
- 5:47Speaker 2: it was a gay bar I worked, and so everybody's
- 5:49Speaker 2: that a lesbian. They were like that you're getting all
- 5:54Speaker 2: next weekend off. And I made it to the game.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Because if i'd want at that day was my goal,
- 6:00Speaker 1: that's right. So I would have been throwing sauce about it.
- 6:02Speaker 1: As well, but it was all of it because you
- 6:07Speaker 1: missed it, nyfing.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And that that game it's selty, but I remember George A.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Boyle hitting the bar after we I mean, they rattled
- 6:13Speaker 2: it in that game. And I try and describe this
- 6:17Speaker 2: and they go. There was like a moment when the
- 6:19Speaker 2: final whistle went, but it was silent because it was
- 6:23Speaker 2: all like we couldn't quite believe that we could let
- 6:26Speaker 2: go of that emotion that because that season was excruciating
- 6:31Speaker 2: but amazed, you know. So it was and I think
- 6:35Speaker 2: this season may or may well not go with that.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Well, it's going that way and it's got that feel
- 6:40Speaker 1: about it. Will when this comes out, I think the
- 6:44Speaker 1: title will be decided, so we can embarrass ourselves here,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but great predictions. At the moment, it's going that way, and.
- 6:49Speaker 2: It's that feeling of utter. The only thing I would
- 6:54Speaker 2: say about ninety seven was the whole club was together.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Everybody was moving is one. And I know that we're
- 6:58Speaker 2: kind of truce and everybody's kind of all in it together,
- 7:05Speaker 2: but it is get that feeling about it that you're going,
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean, does Martin get a helicopter moment? You know
- 7:12Speaker 2: what I mean? The irony of that going full circle
- 7:15Speaker 2: for Martin from being that helicopter Sunday and you wave
- 7:19Speaker 2: a cup defeating all that to Martin coming back and
- 7:23Speaker 2: literally saving a season, saving a club, taking the heat
- 7:27Speaker 2: off the board for a bit and getting us to
- 7:31Speaker 2: a point where Calum is standing with that league trophy.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I mean that would be.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It would be his best achievement if if he gets it.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Out with wanning a European Cup or two European Cups as.
- 7:42Speaker 5: A player, and I think it would be I think,
- 7:52Speaker 5: I mean the run was amazing, it was.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You wouldn't swapped that even though you get nothing. You
- 7:57Speaker 2: wouldn't swapped that season from anything.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Do you to like Liverpool Black One? You were at
- 8:02Speaker 3: Black One.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Every Celtic Farmers in the Celtic d.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Itself was was special.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I mean it was.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It was maybe as well, like we need to remember
- 8:12Speaker 2: and this is a thing, this is a pure Celtic
- 8:15Speaker 2: moth thing right, but there is a bit where you
- 8:17Speaker 2: got yourself. That treble was the first treble since Jock Staying.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Now you try and explain that to twenty five up year. No,
- 8:32Speaker 2: this was this. My brother and his best mate who
- 8:36Speaker 2: used to go to the football used to work at
- 8:38Speaker 2: Celtic Park. That came up the road for that final
- 8:42Speaker 2: game that season and it was just like such. It
- 8:45Speaker 2: was like people came home because it was a treble.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It was it was Martin and it was the treble
- 8:50Speaker 2: and he I mean, honestly, for half a Glasgow they
- 8:53Speaker 2: would have carried him out and his shoulders because we
- 8:56Speaker 2: grew up watching those Orangers get a double treble. Never
- 9:01Speaker 2: done right, But it's that kind of thing where you
- 9:04Speaker 2: go is that that's how special that was. And now
- 9:08Speaker 2: you're going four trebles back to back and none of
- 9:10Speaker 2: them were one with Rangers not being in the league,
- 9:14Speaker 2: which I feel gives it more gravitas when you look
- 9:17Speaker 2: back there, you could argue that, I we should have
- 9:21Speaker 2: won more troubles, but all those troubles were running with
- 9:25Speaker 2: Rangers back in the top league. So you can't really
- 9:29Speaker 2: dismiss that, do you know what I mean? Because that's
- 9:31Speaker 2: a very easy They are hard to win.
- 9:34Speaker 3: It is hard to win it, especially if you're competing
- 9:36Speaker 3: in Europe as well. You know what the rest players
- 9:39Speaker 3: and you get a league cup game or a Scottish
- 9:41Speaker 3: Cup game and other players in the squad league games
- 9:44Speaker 3: because even in today's football, there's no reserves. So these
- 9:49Speaker 3: guys are coming back and they had a lot of injuries.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Where do they play?
- 9:54Speaker 2: They take a couple of bound schemes.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Again, a bound scheme, Disney, prepare you to go onto
- 10:01Speaker 3: a high pressure game. You're leaving the kids. Do you
- 10:04Speaker 3: see it last year and the Champions League? Young kid
- 10:07Speaker 3: comes on. I think it's caught, who's maybe had a
- 10:10Speaker 3: four or five i Ason Villa from Dan Murdy, but
- 10:14Speaker 3: he's never been prepared for that level.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Thanks to all the members that joined last month, we've
- 10:20Speaker 1: got some goodie bags from luck here that will be
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the post. What else we've got.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Jack some nice mugs if you want to be in
- 10:28Speaker 3: to get something next morth make sure you subscribe and
- 10:33Speaker 3: join and the linksin description mugs from Mugs.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And actually think that's a really good point because when
- 10:41Speaker 2: you look at Dane Murdy right, who I think was
- 10:43Speaker 2: quite unfortunate because all the games he was pitched in
- 10:45Speaker 2: he have been massive, and it's like this boy is
- 10:48Speaker 2: not actually getting a chance to make a mistake with
- 10:52Speaker 2: a consequence like it's all right to make a mistake,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you know what I mean? I remember was it Ross
- 10:58Speaker 2: Wallace in a europe game. He was having that like
- 11:01Speaker 2: did they matter what he'd done, and Bob, there's no
- 11:03Speaker 2: lawful be got and whatever and something cut across the
- 11:07Speaker 2: park and put his arm around them and like clearly
- 11:09Speaker 2: had a word in easy and it was obviously like
- 11:11Speaker 2: it just do it, just stop it, just to the basic.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And after that conversational the first ten twelve minutes he
- 11:20Speaker 2: camed down and you go, that's young boys are allowed
- 11:24Speaker 2: to make a mistake. You know, they're they're just out
- 11:26Speaker 2: there trying to learn the game.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It was probably a settled Celtics side at the time.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Is well successful for this year that's been all over
- 11:34Speaker 1: the place at times, the four managers. You know, it's
- 11:38Speaker 1: difficult for the likes of young Laves to come in there.
- 11:40Speaker 1: As you say, any mistake is magnified and it will
- 11:44Speaker 1: be for the next four games. That's they'll make them
- 11:47Speaker 1: better for it.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Though, and Donovan as well, or they I had experience
- 11:51Speaker 3: experienced that pressure.
- 11:53Speaker 2: We I thought we don't have been done all right.
- 11:55Speaker 2: You know again, I think that's the kind of thing
- 11:58Speaker 2: that Martin brings, where he was say, now, listen, this
- 12:01Speaker 2: is all you have to do. This is you when
- 12:04Speaker 2: when the ball's here, you make sure you're there. And
- 12:06Speaker 2: when it's there, you make sure you're there. And that's
- 12:08Speaker 2: that's all I care about. And that's all that Lad
- 12:11Speaker 2: needs to think about, because he's got fans shouting it,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and he's got other players shouting at and he's he's
- 12:17Speaker 2: maybe made a bit of a rash challenge. And the
- 12:19Speaker 2: ref I mean, Scottish referees never looked to me like
- 12:22Speaker 2: they're reasonable guys on a football pitch. They're like kids,
- 12:26Speaker 2: do you know what I mean? Whereas I just like
- 12:28Speaker 2: whereas sometimes you look at European refs and such like
- 12:31Speaker 2: and they're like, right, I appreciate your a young player.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Give went in there headstrong. If you do it again,
- 12:37Speaker 2: you're in the book. But just relax. Whereas you just
- 12:40Speaker 2: see John beating and I'll giving that, do you know
- 12:48Speaker 2: what I mean? Imagine like Douglas Ross, you just feel
- 12:52Speaker 2: like that, Yeah, yeah, total, do you know what I mean?
- 12:55Speaker 2: You just get ripped right, And even we dis like that.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Too quick for him? He is too quick forever it
- 13:01Speaker 1: was too quick for him at easter Road at the weekend.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Douglas Ross's positioning, That's.
- 13:06Speaker 1: What I'm saying. He's too.
- 13:09Speaker 2: This might be too fat, That's what it might be.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I think Douglas is too fat to get back.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Then you could have a and he would swear back
- 13:20Speaker 3: at Yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Did you just play in the shame game? Stephan? Mahey
- 13:25Speaker 2: the coin?
- 13:26Speaker 1: No, you were injured when I was on the bench,
- 13:30Speaker 1: the one where on the bench that was my last
- 13:34Speaker 1: game against Renders. What are you going on? It was crazy.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I was telling my boys about it recently, actually, because
- 13:44Speaker 1: the penalty gets given right after the incident.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Do you know the thing as well? That night walking
- 13:51Speaker 2: up to the stadium, it was a summer's night and
- 13:53Speaker 2: it was a Scotch and red sky and it just
- 13:56Speaker 2: felt very volatile because it had been really warm that day.
- 14:00Speaker 2: The sun was I think it was it was a
- 14:02Speaker 2: six o'clock kickoff, it was something like that and five o'clock,
- 14:05Speaker 2: and because it was it was early evening and a
- 14:08Speaker 2: summer so everybody's been in tank top. And then they
- 14:12Speaker 2: go again the I can't believe somebody through something. That
- 14:14Speaker 2: referee really.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Guy, it was the guy that night It fell off
- 14:20Speaker 1: and away but still singing.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Somebody though, didn't they but nobody was seriously injured, but
- 14:28Speaker 2: they know everybody was kind of all right, but.
- 14:31Speaker 1: She was talking here about hitting somebody throwing the sauce
- 14:35Speaker 1: on that. Where did you, comedian, were doing your accommodate
- 14:39Speaker 1: at that point?
- 14:40Speaker 2: No, noo, so Adam et Maz and she was away
- 14:45Speaker 2: traveling the world know that, And we used to work
- 14:47Speaker 2: together and they she came back and she'd been diagnosed
- 14:53Speaker 2: with stage four terminal cancer, right a varying. So me
- 14:57Speaker 2: and my mate Paul had went up to see her
- 14:58Speaker 2: and a couple of weeks later sitting and a sadiny
- 15:02Speaker 2: was like three in the morning, and it makes you
- 15:04Speaker 2: kind of think you should scare yourselfie. So this is
- 15:07Speaker 2: twenty ten, right, and I'm like that should they be
- 15:10Speaker 2: jumping out a plane? And then we were speaking about
- 15:12Speaker 2: how do you remember from like nineteen ninety seventy twenty
- 15:16Speaker 2: ten the world, I mean, there was an Iraq War
- 15:18Speaker 2: and all that, but the economies that people just went
- 15:21Speaker 2: about their business and it was fine and the world
- 15:25Speaker 2: seemed quite ordinary, right, We just went about our business
- 15:30Speaker 2: and compared to growing up in the nineteen eighties and nineties,
- 15:33Speaker 2: which was quite volatile, like politically and a lot of
- 15:37Speaker 2: industrial action stuff were going. I I call miners Ravens Craig,
- 15:42Speaker 2: you know what I mean, all of that or that
- 15:43Speaker 2: kind of under that kind of Thatcherism and even it's
- 15:47Speaker 2: quite boring new life, and I mean we're pretty sauted.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And I said, as we should do something, you went, oh,
- 15:53Speaker 2: you can do this stand up comedy costs. It was
- 15:56Speaker 2: that because you're going to learn how to write and
- 16:00Speaker 2: then you do a five minute gig at the in there, right, okay.
- 16:03Speaker 2: So we went away and the next morning he said,
- 16:07Speaker 2: do you remember what you'd agreed to sign up? Tore?
- 16:09Speaker 2: And I was like, sign the check because you have
- 16:12Speaker 2: not loose a bet. Do you know what I mean?
- 16:13Speaker 2: You know what it's like, right, you both signed up
- 16:17Speaker 2: for both signed up for it, right the ties So
- 16:19Speaker 2: if he co was hinted the course on the first
- 16:20Speaker 2: night and it was like the strad Clyde Center, a
- 16:23Speaker 2: Lifelong Learning. It was so funny. So the teacher is
- 16:28Speaker 2: a woman called Viv g Viv Graham, and she was
- 16:31Speaker 2: going in the room and we make sure wanted to
- 16:32Speaker 2: stand up comedy and on that right, and people, oh yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 2: my amateur dramatic small's the funny one. Another funny you
- 16:38Speaker 2: know that kind of person, right, And it comes to Paul.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Paul goes, I've wanted to do this course for about
- 16:44Speaker 2: five years and I'm like that, what are you John?
- 16:48Speaker 2: And he's like, I know, I've kind of never told
- 16:49Speaker 2: you that, right, And I was like, no way. She
- 16:53Speaker 2: mean what brings you here? And I was like, well,
- 16:56Speaker 2: I'm high there if you ever done it. So they've
- 17:00Speaker 2: all done like singing and amateur dramatics for that, I'm like,
- 17:04Speaker 2: never stood on a stage. She's like, what I said,
- 17:07Speaker 2: never spoken in a microphone? She like, must have done
- 17:10Speaker 2: like the Nativity at school. And I was like She's like, right, okay,
- 17:14Speaker 2: the bother. And then we've done the course and it
- 17:17Speaker 2: was like teaching you things to look at things in
- 17:19Speaker 2: the papers and all that and how you would extract
- 17:21Speaker 2: stuff and you kind of find it what kind of
- 17:24Speaker 2: comedy you really like? And it was great. It was
- 17:27Speaker 2: dead interesting. But she says, you need to be funny.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I can't even make you funny. It's up to you.
- 17:32Speaker 2: You kind of learn the kind of scaffolding of it
- 17:36Speaker 2: if you like, and then put it together. And then
- 17:39Speaker 2: I've done the gig, and I swear to god, it
- 17:41Speaker 2: was like see the moment, I still still not so
- 17:46Speaker 2: much like a gig just because but I love the
- 17:50Speaker 2: butterflies and you go out and I went up and
- 17:53Speaker 2: I've done it, and I was like, oh my god,
- 17:55Speaker 2: this is the best thing I've ever done in my
- 17:58Speaker 2: entire life. Like you know, like it's probably a kin't
- 18:01Speaker 2: like you scoring your first go do you know, especially
- 18:05Speaker 2: if it's Celtic, do you know what I mean? And
- 18:07Speaker 2: it's like that thire going, this is what I was
- 18:10Speaker 2: just meant to do. And you know when people go, oh,
- 18:13Speaker 2: you never work a day in your life and all that,
- 18:15Speaker 2: well that's how I felt. So I just stuck at
- 18:18Speaker 2: it and I kept getting gigs and for eight and
- 18:20Speaker 2: a half years, I try to build up my reputation
- 18:24Speaker 2: and stuff. And then I got to a point where
- 18:26Speaker 2: I thought, right, I need to take the jump to
- 18:27Speaker 2: go full time. And I had a good job. I
- 18:30Speaker 2: was an electrical estimator, so I would price buildings like
- 18:33Speaker 2: this for all the electrical work and stuff in it.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And I was like, no, I'm going to I'm going
- 18:38Speaker 2: to jack this in. I'm going to go full time.
- 18:40Speaker 2: It's like the best thing I've ever done. I just
- 18:42Speaker 2: love it. It's just the best job in the world.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Paul still a lawyer. He's still a lawyer. And you know,
- 18:48Speaker 2: I think he was really good. He was brilliant, but
- 18:51Speaker 2: he didn't really that effort that you need to put
- 18:54Speaker 2: in when you first start is so intense and you
- 18:58Speaker 2: get very little rewall that you just need to keep going.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And I think he was just like, I don't have
- 19:04Speaker 2: the time for that, because this is the job that
- 19:06Speaker 2: I do, Whereas I was like, your passion one hundred percent,
- 19:10Speaker 2: and then you have then had to subsequently go, this
- 19:12Speaker 2: is now my job. And that's a great position to
- 19:14Speaker 2: bear intity love something so much it's your job. You
- 19:18Speaker 2: probably get that, like I do, you know, I mean,
- 19:21Speaker 2: or even just being in the around football obviously now
- 19:23Speaker 2: that you've retired, just still in and around it and
- 19:26Speaker 2: you still get to enjoy it and just sitting talking
- 19:28Speaker 2: about football stuffing. He's just sitting talking about comedy comedians.
- 19:33Speaker 1: You're writing, so see you're going to do a dig?
- 19:36Speaker 1: Is everything strategically written? You can you go off in tangents,
- 19:40Speaker 1: Oh you've got I.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Drop kick them in the face. No. I'm very much
- 19:48Speaker 2: of the opinion of like you have a set, you
- 19:51Speaker 2: maybe move your set about. You might want to try
- 19:53Speaker 2: out some new stuff that you've written. Right, you might
- 19:56Speaker 2: want to try that in the middle of a set.
- 19:58Speaker 2: You know, if you're out, when is there a Thursday night,
- 20:01Speaker 2: you're probably going to have to try that. But but
- 20:04Speaker 2: I like to be quite loose so that you can
- 20:09Speaker 2: just Dey'll be what's going on in the room, Maybe
- 20:12Speaker 2: do a callback like in your joke referring in one
- 20:14Speaker 2: of the other comedians sets on that kind of stuff.
- 20:18Speaker 2: And then if you if you're doing a solo show,
- 20:21Speaker 2: you'll have your show and you'll have your structure and
- 20:23Speaker 2: you'll know that you're what you're talking about with your
- 20:25Speaker 2: jokes and everyth and now. But you want you to
- 20:27Speaker 2: know it's so well that again that you're so loose
- 20:30Speaker 2: in the room, because you'll never get the same audience
- 20:33Speaker 2: in the same room ever again, you know what I mean.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So you need to you need to be able to
- 20:39Speaker 2: make it special for that thing. So like the fringe,
- 20:42Speaker 2: you go to the fringe, you do whatever you've got
- 20:43Speaker 2: your other show, But there are certain things that could
- 20:46Speaker 2: happen lake comers, do you know what I mean? Just
- 20:49Speaker 2: like a Lake coming, I'll go did you got a
- 20:52Speaker 2: George Street? And they'll go yeah, I'll say that's George
- 20:54Speaker 2: Streek be two squares in the end of it that
- 20:56Speaker 2: none of them are called George Square because that's a
- 20:59Speaker 2: town planner for do you know what I mean? And
- 21:01Speaker 2: going no becaus jehge Square's other part of the town
- 21:03Speaker 2: and kind of have a laugh with them. Don't so
- 21:06Speaker 2: much pick on them, but have a laugh with them.
- 21:08Speaker 2: So you need to just kind of I think you
- 21:11Speaker 2: need to be quite relaxed.
- 21:13Speaker 1: It comes to experience as well from.
- 21:15Speaker 2: And the more material you build up, it's a big toolbox,
- 21:19Speaker 2: you know what I mean. They're certain tools that if
- 21:21Speaker 2: you're in a building site, you might not use for
- 21:22Speaker 2: two years, but one day I am using that day.
- 21:26Speaker 2: So it's just sometimes you'll you'll throw it.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Where's the best kind of places? Are the favorite places
- 21:32Speaker 1: to play? In the fringe? Something with the big kind
- 21:35Speaker 1: of festival you do? Festivals? Is it more?
- 21:38Speaker 2: I Every year I do the Glasgow Comedy Festival and
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'll do three shows over two gigs, over two nights.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I'll do a Friday, a Saturday time, a Saturday night
- 21:49Speaker 2: and that's always kind of wear a debut and new show,
- 21:52Speaker 2: which is quite a bold move, but I enjoy it
- 21:55Speaker 2: because it's the Kings and then the Fringe. I'll take
- 21:59Speaker 2: that show to the fringe. That show get cut down
- 22:01Speaker 2: to an hour and I'll go to Edinburgh. And I'm
- 22:04Speaker 2: really lucky. I get to play a five hundred seater
- 22:06Speaker 2: in Edinburgh, so you only you go at the fringe
- 22:08Speaker 2: and it's like a broom, couple. This is a nice
- 22:12Speaker 2: air conditioned, comfortable room, do you know what I mean?
- 22:15Speaker 2: And it's a bit like playing a provincial theater. But
- 22:17Speaker 2: then now I'm on tour just now, so you're getting
- 22:20Speaker 2: to play beautiful rooms like Eden Court, Na Tivoly, the Alham, Brandon, Femlin.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It's a beautiful room, you know. So you get to
- 22:30Speaker 2: you get to really go and enjoy the rooms per
- 22:34Speaker 2: theater or stuff like that, and then you can really
- 22:37Speaker 2: go into it then because that's an audience. It's key
- 22:40Speaker 2: to see you and you can have a really good
- 22:43Speaker 2: time whetting a good but of fun with it and
- 22:46Speaker 2: it's lovely, do you know what I mean. It's you're
- 22:47Speaker 2: just so privileged, do you know what I mean? It's
- 22:49Speaker 2: not you're in such a privileged position to get to
- 22:52Speaker 2: do this as a job. It's ridiculous, you know, what
- 22:54Speaker 2: I mean, But I just.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Love it a long time, and we've got the pubs
- 23:00Speaker 3: in the fringe. The stand up comedians were brilliant in
- 23:03Speaker 3: one year and I tried to get Jimmy Carr tickets
- 23:09Speaker 3: the fringe so I couldn't get them, but Jim Bowing,
- 23:14Speaker 3: Jim Boone Francis, I remember I used to do. I
- 23:18Speaker 3: used to do stand up or I used to do
- 23:20Speaker 3: like Opportunity in Oxford it was Bills, Bills was Bulls.
- 23:25Speaker 3: So I had got the six tickets and they were
- 23:28Speaker 3: they working through for Glasgow because I will stayed in Edinburgh.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I was like, well, I've got Jim Boone, He'll be
- 23:32Speaker 3: good funny and I've seen them in Phoenix nights. So
- 23:36Speaker 3: We're in the conference center and was sitting down at
- 23:38Speaker 3: the back or his seats there and I never told
- 23:42Speaker 3: a fucking joke. He talked about was Billseye, about the
- 23:46Speaker 3: caravan and this Bully Special prize and they're all, hammer me,
- 23:50Speaker 3: you told me, I just gonna be funny.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You know the funniest part of the night. It was
- 23:55Speaker 1: a wee guy at the front row. He just kept
- 23:58Speaker 1: going in.
- 24:03Speaker 3: The first time Jim is that, yeah, well don't mean
- 24:05Speaker 3: he was I don't know. We can see his head
- 24:09Speaker 3: going on that too. It was the funniest part of
- 24:13Speaker 3: the whole night. I was that I'd apologized for the
- 24:17Speaker 3: first experiences.
- 24:19Speaker 1: First and last, I've been back in person. So we
- 24:24Speaker 1: did an episode with the boy Scott Kyle Brilliant and
- 24:28Speaker 1: we're in it. So I was at the Friends last year.
- 24:30Speaker 1: That was my second experience, right, But as you're talking about,
- 24:34Speaker 1: we were at the conference center, yep. So we did
- 24:37Speaker 1: the pavilion.
- 24:41Speaker 2: The pavilion I suppose to.
- 24:42Speaker 1: The conference center's a lovely place as well, but the
- 24:45Speaker 1: audience is right there, right there in front of you.
- 24:48Speaker 1: It's quite dawning.
- 24:49Speaker 2: So I don't think the Ralph Little and Will Meller
- 24:54Speaker 2: and it was called the Will and Ralph should know better,
- 24:58Speaker 2: so they can. They don't really dare each other. They
- 25:00Speaker 2: come up the ideas of things to do, and they'd
- 25:03Speaker 2: always wanted to do stand up. So I get the
- 25:05Speaker 2: phone call to say, could you come and meet them,
- 25:07Speaker 2: have a wee meeting with them and then they'll go
- 25:09Speaker 2: away do their other stuff. So they were doing like
- 25:11Speaker 2: trapeze work and all that, and Paisley. Then the next
- 25:16Speaker 2: day we're going to come and film them. So I
- 25:18Speaker 2: was like, right, okay. So it was in the Glasgow stand,
- 25:21Speaker 2: so I had WoT down had a meeting with them
- 25:23Speaker 2: and the Argon and Great Western Road O Byers Roads
- 25:28Speaker 2: and they'd be chat with them and I was like, right,
- 25:31Speaker 2: this and that blah blah blah, right okay. So they went, oyess,
- 25:34Speaker 2: write your stuff, there's my number if you need it
- 25:36Speaker 2: and drop me a text. Blah blah blah. Right, okay,
- 25:38Speaker 2: we'll go into the stand. So they weren't allowed to
- 25:40Speaker 2: see each other sets right, so that was fine. So
- 25:45Speaker 2: they told them we're in the club and we I
- 25:47Speaker 2: was like, and where are the audience where you're standing?
- 25:52Speaker 2: And then it's like, oh shit, and I went on,
- 25:55Speaker 2: they're there round here and I went the tables will
- 25:58Speaker 2: be bodied up, pick it and he was like, are
- 26:00Speaker 2: you joking. I'm just the audience has been there because
- 26:03Speaker 2: he's obviously just to their camera or it is a
- 26:07Speaker 2: bit of thunder back, and I was like, when you're
- 26:09Speaker 2: in a club. But I had to came down and
- 26:11Speaker 2: kind of be like, but see when you hear this laugh,
- 26:14Speaker 2: it will just right off the ceiling and right back.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And he was like really, And I went I. He
- 26:20Speaker 2: was like, right, right, right. So there was a couple
- 26:23Speaker 2: of jokes and I went, oh, I would change that.
- 26:25Speaker 2: You need to punch that up as supposed to punching
- 26:27Speaker 2: down that kind of thing. It's like, right, okay, And
- 26:31Speaker 2: he came back and Ralph set with so much that
- 26:35Speaker 2: it was so darker. Will Will kind of brought up
- 26:38Speaker 2: a thing where he went when I grew up very blindly,
- 26:41Speaker 2: what happened is that were naked attraction.
- 26:46Speaker 6: It's a great point, and it's like, how did we
- 26:49Speaker 6: go from here's here's my balls.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Before your face?
- 27:02Speaker 2: Just standing what a really good observe. And he was
- 27:07Speaker 2: just kind of talking about that and getting old and
- 27:09Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, and then Wills was really like dark.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It was really dark, right, but it was funny, but
- 27:16Speaker 2: you're like, oh, And I had said he'd done like jokes,
- 27:21Speaker 2: and I went, I dropped them because I don't think that's.
- 27:23Speaker 1: It's not.
- 27:26Speaker 2: It's not tangible enough historically for the audience to get
- 27:29Speaker 2: it right. And he was like, right, okay, and I went,
- 27:32Speaker 2: you don't have to, I'm just gidding you advice. So
- 27:33Speaker 2: the bit I had said drop done it died in
- 27:36Speaker 2: its whole right, died just drop it. He'd never done it,
- 27:39Speaker 2: he'd done it, and then he done this other bit
- 27:42Speaker 2: and he talks about his sister died and he'd done
- 27:44Speaker 2: an amazing punch line at the end, right, and it
- 27:47Speaker 2: raised the roof and it was brilliant. And honestly, those
- 27:50Speaker 2: two guys were this is guys that've been in TV
- 27:54Speaker 2: since that, you know what, being done theater all that, right,
- 27:57Speaker 2: like proper Shakespeare and stuff. They were like kids and
- 28:02Speaker 2: Christmas moment they were flying high and I was like,
- 28:06Speaker 2: that's that's the beauty stand up. That's the beauty of
- 28:09Speaker 2: live entertainment in your audience being there, because it really
- 28:12Speaker 2: is magical, do you know what I mean? It really is.
- 28:15Speaker 2: It's a beautiful thing. And it's when you have that
- 28:18Speaker 2: kind of connection, it's just great fun, just great fun.
- 28:22Speaker 2: So you should always enjoy it.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm not putting ourselves to comedy. I've
- 28:26Speaker 1: committed to the London Marathon on the show what was
- 28:29Speaker 1: the ice hockey or something? I don't think comedies.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Ice hockey my big thing.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I love I like watching it watching it stand up.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Over the years, he's your favorite stand ups.
- 28:44Speaker 3: The old ones obviously, Billy Connley, all the old stuff,
- 28:48Speaker 3: you know, the one with the audience with the or
- 28:50Speaker 3: the celebrities an audience.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I I I that was just so funny. Man. You
- 28:56Speaker 2: know that comes on the TV about once every sixth
- 28:59Speaker 2: week late at night, and I will still watch that
- 29:02Speaker 2: tears from Dinner Face. Do you know the thing with
- 29:10Speaker 2: Conley as well, all these stuff still stands. It's not sexist,
- 29:14Speaker 2: the racist stuff talking about hitting the wife and all
- 29:17Speaker 2: that stuff that he could have done because it was
- 29:19Speaker 2: that generation. But he knew he was just a big,
- 29:23Speaker 2: silly looking clown and he really played into that. And
- 29:27Speaker 2: I often wonder if Billy Conley done in continence pants?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Now people be up, well, that's not actually how in
- 29:32Speaker 2: continence pants? I don't think the truth A fixtion was
- 29:37Speaker 2: in the Galley gate. Oh the galley This is not
- 29:44Speaker 2: believable because the Bible is do you know what I mean?
- 29:47Speaker 2: It's like that kind of thing, isn't it when you're going,
- 29:51Speaker 2: oh you know, but eyes.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Have you found a big difference when you started to
- 29:55Speaker 3: know what you can and what's right.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I mean I never say anything that was of a
- 30:02Speaker 2: controversial though it was funny in the new show I
- 30:06Speaker 2: had done twenty minutes right in organizing my dad's funeral,
- 30:11Speaker 2: because a funeral is a thing that everybody goes through, right,
- 30:16Speaker 2: but there's a certain element of like a Catholic funeral
- 30:20Speaker 2: that my nuche involved in the Catholic funeral, right, and
- 30:24Speaker 2: me going to see the priest, and the priest kind
- 30:26Speaker 2: of going your hands are no bad and I'm like,
- 30:28Speaker 2: they're bang else And he's like, oh, we don't know
- 30:31Speaker 2: about that one. And I'm like, I think you'll find
- 30:33Speaker 2: even the ranger supports will be crying at this father writing.
- 30:36Speaker 2: And that the kind of my nuiche of it and
- 30:39Speaker 2: the and all the stuff that goes on in the
- 30:41Speaker 2: carrying of the coffin and everything, right, and it was
- 30:44Speaker 2: there about my dad dying. It was just the observations
- 30:48Speaker 2: of a funeral, right, and it's something that everybody goes
- 30:51Speaker 2: through and blah blah blah, and I'd done this, and
- 30:53Speaker 2: I kind of slid the priest off for just being
- 30:56Speaker 2: so blunt, because for us it's one of the worst
- 30:59Speaker 2: things we can but for him it's just every day life, right,
- 31:03Speaker 2: And the kind of bluntness of the priests really funny,
- 31:08Speaker 2: and my kind of resistance to him so I've done
- 31:10Speaker 2: twenty minutes in this and this guy bood because I
- 31:15Speaker 2: said the world Celtic, right, I've just slated the Catholic
- 31:20Speaker 2: Church for twenty minutes, and you bud that we'd put
- 31:23Speaker 2: on your Spider Man mask, peel peel peel, right, And
- 31:26Speaker 2: I've done this and the Kings and it was just
- 31:28Speaker 2: off the cuff. Do you know that guy? Get out
- 31:30Speaker 2: and left, and you're like, you can shout out, then
- 31:34Speaker 2: get something back and go that's that. I'm away. Oh
- 31:38Speaker 2: and you should have came to see a Fenian lesbian, right,
- 31:40Speaker 2: do you know what I mean? You're like me? And
- 31:43Speaker 2: I never even said anything controversial. I just bound I've
- 31:48Speaker 2: done twenty minutes. Then it was like he was so
- 31:51Speaker 2: disgusted that I'd even said the name. It It was again,
- 31:55Speaker 2: it was another joke about my dad. It was about
- 31:58Speaker 2: I basically said, my dad's very much like asko Catholic
- 32:00Speaker 2: fish up on a Friday, calling the referee a Mason
- 32:04Speaker 2: the Saturday lie in a Sunday. Do you know what
- 32:06Speaker 2: I mean? That's just a sociological observation about Glasgow. And
- 32:13Speaker 2: and it gets booed and you're calm down, man, Do
- 32:17Speaker 2: you know what I mean like relax. So there is
- 32:20Speaker 2: an element of people need and I don't mean people
- 32:27Speaker 2: should let things go. You shouldn't let racism go and
- 32:29Speaker 2: sexism going, all those things, but just they get upset.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It's like that, you know, I don't think that's how
- 32:36Speaker 2: in continence pants work a billy you can almost heal
- 32:39Speaker 2: them in your head. It's like I don't know a
- 32:41Speaker 2: pint about a half pint sketch in Scotland, and seeing
- 32:45Speaker 2: when you're other half pint in Scotland you get offered
- 32:47Speaker 2: the color and booking crayons. It's just funny, right, it's
- 32:55Speaker 2: just a daft I think you'll find a half pints
- 32:58Speaker 2: are perfectly acceptable drink at mind. Father used to drink
- 33:01Speaker 2: a half and a hoof in your life. It's a
- 33:04Speaker 2: fucking joke. Just it's totally do you know what I mean?
- 33:10Speaker 2: And you go shot. It's just always old guys just moaning,
- 33:14Speaker 2: not old pensioner guys just wanting our Karens, you know
- 33:18Speaker 2: the Karens. Well, actually I think this promotes alcoholic drinking
- 33:22Speaker 2: their wine. You know, I mean a big straw, so
- 33:27Speaker 2: I crack.
- 33:29Speaker 1: It takes all sorts seeing your comedy then so the
- 33:33Speaker 1: festivals and stuff. So we like to talk about a
- 33:35Speaker 1: bit of music on this is that tied in a
- 33:40Speaker 1: do you know? It's the likes a transmit obviously around
- 33:43Speaker 1: the corner different festivals. Is a little comedy tense done
- 33:48Speaker 1: that before.
- 33:48Speaker 2: People used to do rock nests. I never done it
- 33:51Speaker 2: because it fell around about the fringe. There was the
- 33:54Speaker 2: odd one at Tee in the Park is Tee in
- 33:56Speaker 2: the Park was slowly dying and then you had the
- 34:00Speaker 2: There was a comedy tended transmit last year which was
- 34:02Speaker 2: lovely but a fun and it was kind of lunch timey.
- 34:05Speaker 2: And the thing we transmit is it's not as intense
- 34:08Speaker 2: to stee in the Park is because everyone be afraid
- 34:11Speaker 2: at lunchtime at Tea in the Park was gobbed. So
- 34:14Speaker 2: it was people who are still eating a roll or
- 34:16Speaker 2: eating a hot dog and coming in with their pint
- 34:18Speaker 2: and having a wee chunckol and then going about and
- 34:20Speaker 2: doing their thing, and it's i mean, their music.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Big time in the side of the comedy.
- 34:27Speaker 2: What they so my right, I've got an older brother
- 34:32Speaker 2: eight years older than me, so I grew up at
- 34:36Speaker 2: a time when it was like Jaran Jurann and Spandu
- 34:39Speaker 2: Ballely and he literally went and like just put me
- 34:42Speaker 2: through a wee chi cane and gave me you to
- 34:46Speaker 2: the Smith's the House Martins, simple minds to a degree,
- 34:51Speaker 2: Jesus and Mary Chain, the Stone, the Rosies, like this
- 34:54Speaker 2: could literally be his bedroom, right, I all of that really,
- 34:59Speaker 2: So he was born and seventy two, so two eighty three,
- 35:02Speaker 2: he's ten eleven years old. He's really finding his musical taste.
- 35:06Speaker 2: So you're looking at like you two wore under a
- 35:10Speaker 2: bloodred sky, all of that, and I was obviously this
- 35:13Speaker 2: was kind of just always in the house. This was
- 35:17Speaker 2: just always the music. My dad worked to be from home,
- 35:20Speaker 2: so Mark was eight years older than me and my
- 35:21Speaker 2: mom kind of listened to like Motown and stuff like that,
- 35:24Speaker 2: but he also listened to like the Specials in SKA,
- 35:28Speaker 2: which is quite funny because he never really get into
- 35:31Speaker 2: Motown until he was later, but he kind of went
- 35:35Speaker 2: in at his generation and worked his way back as
- 35:38Speaker 2: opposed to get in the house. The influence for the house,
- 35:41Speaker 2: and then that kind of led me down a path
- 35:44Speaker 2: of the Stone, Rosie's, the Happy Monday's James, which then
- 35:48Speaker 2: takes inty Brick Pop did and then that whole explosion
- 35:53Speaker 2: of that and it was almost like that was all
- 35:55Speaker 2: just gearing up to get there. But I think, I mean,
- 36:00Speaker 2: I would probably take at Kung Babies maybe my cut
- 36:04Speaker 2: off their album, brilliant album. I mean, so it's the
- 36:07Speaker 2: Joshua Tree. So it's rattling hum which is almost overlooked
- 36:11Speaker 2: because they brought rattling hums about their journey through America
- 36:16Speaker 2: after making a wild making the Joshua Tree, you know,
- 36:19Speaker 2: and you go, what I mean, it's great and act
- 36:22Speaker 2: Hung Baby's brilliant, I mean, zoopa, but Stone Roses last.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Just when you're saying that, I'm just remembering my influencing
- 36:32Speaker 1: music was from a mate's older brother and it was
- 36:36Speaker 1: just stuff that was put on too. You remember Stone Roses.
- 36:39Speaker 1: At the first time I thought Guns and Roses, I'm like,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'm not really in but it was a Stone Roses
- 36:44Speaker 1: and they're my favorite band.
- 36:45Speaker 2: But.
- 36:47Speaker 1: From an older a MAT's older brother. So it's similar
- 36:50Speaker 1: to that how things.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Just stick with you. And it was that kind of
- 36:54Speaker 2: Jackson Pollock like it really like it was really bright
- 36:58Speaker 2: and it was colorful, and you know the majority of
- 37:01Speaker 2: these was not bright and colorful. With that type of music.
- 37:04Speaker 2: It was quite grim and I think, I mean, I
- 37:09Speaker 2: still say, like, if you go wish her top three albums,
- 37:11Speaker 2: I'm like the Stone Rosy Stone Noses definitely maybe, and
- 37:15Speaker 2: then my third will just rotation. I like, I was
- 37:21Speaker 2: going to an oasis called something. My girlfriend was on
- 37:23Speaker 2: the phoneyir palishment. Oh no, no, I'm not going to
- 37:25Speaker 2: the concert sous. He's going to a powerful school. You
- 37:27Speaker 2: know me clear. I was a bigger Bluff fan, and
- 37:30Speaker 2: I swear to god.
- 37:31Speaker 6: I was like, wow, wow, wait, this is eight months
- 37:35Speaker 6: we've been seeing each other, and this is when how
- 37:38Speaker 6: I find it a bit And she's like no, no,
- 37:41Speaker 6: and then like Pulp, like I loved, and I got
- 37:44Speaker 6: to introduce Pulp.
- 37:48Speaker 2: The gardens called Someting the Gardens for hug Maney and
- 37:51Speaker 2: I met Jarvis Cocker and I genuinely was like, my
- 37:55Speaker 2: head's going to explode. What a sound guy. He's so sound.
- 37:59Speaker 2: And Richard Holly was there and he came on and
- 38:02Speaker 2: barred out a few songs to them, and I was like,
- 38:04Speaker 2: it's rich Richard Holly's there drinking a wee glass of
- 38:07Speaker 2: wine and getting his guitar ready, and.
- 38:10Speaker 1: We've had opportunities like that through your comedy to do.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Stuff like that. Yeah, and just just meet those people
- 38:17Speaker 2: that like it's funny because he signed my album and
- 38:20Speaker 2: I've got it framed and I've got to jump.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Remember Cocker jumped on the stage.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Was at the Brits in TV The Brits, the Britts
- 38:28Speaker 2: Eye the Brits. It was Michael Jackson.
- 38:31Speaker 6: That was it.
- 38:32Speaker 2: And ah because all the kids and all that were
- 38:35Speaker 2: on the stage and Cockers not having it. No, that's
- 38:38Speaker 2: when they were allowed to drink it the Brits. They're
- 38:40Speaker 2: not allowed to do that anymore. But it was like
- 38:43Speaker 2: in that like Radiohead the Benz, like everyone goes okay,
- 38:46Speaker 2: computer and I'm like, oh for me, I love the
- 38:49Speaker 2: Bens and I would kind of but I that was
- 38:53Speaker 2: that was my influence. And it's funny because of so
- 38:55Speaker 2: much of that music, I would say, from nineteen eighty two,
- 39:00Speaker 2: seen ninety two, that's so very specific to that time
- 39:05Speaker 2: time and it's a certain sound and even just things
- 39:08Speaker 2: like the Pete Mode Teenage Fang Clock Brilliant Album, Brown
- 39:13Speaker 2: Bandwagon S Kneel and Pink for the Dollar the Dollar Bag.
- 39:19Speaker 2: So there's there's I mean, but equally, I love a
- 39:22Speaker 2: bit of disco, old school seventy studio fifty four disco.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Do you what mean you go? That's a buyer, that's
- 39:28Speaker 2: a great what's.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Your favorite games you've been at?
- 39:30Speaker 2: Then?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Did you manage to see the store? Noes?
- 39:33Speaker 2: I when you see them with my brother at the
- 39:35Speaker 2: Ettie Had.
- 39:36Speaker 1: This is a story is that when they can they
- 39:38Speaker 1: can background the saying.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I I when they came background, So I I seen
- 39:43Speaker 2: them at the Ettie Had. Then the year later I
- 39:45Speaker 2: seen them at handing for the last gig. So me
- 39:48Speaker 2: and my brother meeting Manchester. Can you get a hotel
- 39:51Speaker 2: in Manchester? So the night before I stay in Liverpool,
- 39:54Speaker 2: he drives up. He stays down there. Children, So he
- 39:57Speaker 2: drives up. We're meeting Manchester. We stayed at My girlfriend
- 40:02Speaker 2: at the time dropped us off. And you know how
- 40:04Speaker 2: there's that kind of house and estate next to the
- 40:06Speaker 2: Ettie Had. Right, there's a chippy, then there's a massive
- 40:09Speaker 2: house in estate. My brother went right. One of the
- 40:12Speaker 2: lads at my work said there's a boozer in here,
- 40:14Speaker 2: and I was that right, Oh jeez. England won the
- 40:17Speaker 2: Euros so it was awesome. George's flags right, and we
- 40:20Speaker 2: walked in. Everyone had a Paul Whaler hair cut and
- 40:24Speaker 2: a jacket and I was like, we are wearing a
- 40:27Speaker 2: pub fishameless. We are the only people not on gear.
- 40:32Speaker 2: I said, you know why you went? Why do you
- 40:33Speaker 2: think I went? Because we probably looked like police like
- 40:37Speaker 2: compared to the rest of them. The two so we
- 40:39Speaker 2: went into this pub and then we went to the
- 40:41Speaker 2: Etty Hard and it was a public Enemy, and then
- 40:44Speaker 2: it was the Stone Roses and it was genuinely just
- 40:46Speaker 2: one of the best moments in my life. And then
- 40:49Speaker 2: Hammding the following year was meant to be my brother,
- 40:52Speaker 2: but he became a dad for the first time. So
- 40:54Speaker 2: I went with my mate who missed waterfall because she
- 40:57Speaker 2: went to the toilet and I was like, why what
- 41:00Speaker 2: you daily? What you Dane? There was a week guy
- 41:04Speaker 2: next day who was about fifteen when he's died, and
- 41:06Speaker 2: I was like, I love them and he's dad clearly
- 41:11Speaker 2: curated his music and I was like, have you seen
- 41:14Speaker 2: Taxi Driver? He went, no, w have you seen good Fellas?
- 41:17Speaker 2: He had no. I was like Blest and the Happy
- 41:20Speaker 2: Mondays he went, just getting into them. I was like,
- 41:22Speaker 2: what be the grateful dead? He's like no, the good.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I was like, you're a bet your day like so,
- 41:27Speaker 2: and I was looking at this week, I going, I
- 41:29Speaker 2: am so jealous, like you get to see this for
- 41:32Speaker 2: the first time, which I would have done anything to
- 41:34Speaker 2: see this when I was your reach, do you know
- 41:36Speaker 2: what I mean? And you've got so much life of
- 41:41Speaker 2: culture to come at you that's been before, and you're
- 41:46Speaker 2: going to relive it. You're going to pass it on
- 41:48Speaker 2: to your kids, because this stuff's timeless and it won't age.
- 41:52Speaker 2: And I was like, oh man, you've got so much,
- 41:54Speaker 2: Like I know, the world's terrible, but you've got so
- 41:57Speaker 2: much to look forward to in that learning cover that
- 42:00Speaker 2: kind of popular culture from a different time because you
- 42:04Speaker 2: can really tap int.
- 42:05Speaker 1: He definitely can, because I mean that Stone knows his
- 42:07Speaker 1: album's twenty seven years twenty seven eight nine. I think
- 42:13Speaker 1: twitters is that right? But you see a lot of young,
- 42:18Speaker 1: even young bands now doing all the covers of the
- 42:20Speaker 1: stuff because on social media, trying to get themselves out there. Yeah,
- 42:23Speaker 1: and it's coming right background and.
- 42:25Speaker 2: It's it's incredible though, that isn't it that generational.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Massive compliment to them? All these bands are taking their songs,
- 42:32Speaker 1: aren't they.
- 42:33Speaker 2: I mean John Squire or Johnny Mah, you know what
- 42:36Speaker 2: I mean. I mean, imagine having then you've got Paul
- 42:38Speaker 2: Weller no talking about the style count so never talk
- 42:43Speaker 2: about the Style Couds. So I remember naing Frankie having
- 42:45Speaker 2: this discussion and Frankie was that the stip don't be
- 42:48Speaker 2: I said, they're pish, And then about a month later
- 42:50Speaker 2: they said, I went back listening to the Stylecouds rights,
- 42:54Speaker 2: I was like, they're terrible. They are terrible. But that
- 42:58Speaker 2: kind of thing of like just passing that stuff down,
- 43:02Speaker 2: like I've never really been into rapp or anything like that.
- 43:05Speaker 2: And I couldn't remember my brother being all the words
- 43:07Speaker 2: to put like all the public Enemy songs. So that
- 43:10Speaker 2: was obviously something that had got into him, which probably
- 43:14Speaker 2: equally came from the scan the Specials and fed into that.
- 43:18Speaker 2: And there's a real kind of what's the word that
- 43:21Speaker 2: you're looking for there, there's a real kind of thing
- 43:23Speaker 2: where everything just leans into everything. Every week bit of
- 43:26Speaker 2: popular culture will take in another way. But I do
- 43:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean, It's like it's magical, and
- 43:32Speaker 2: I think I think we were very lucky when when
- 43:36Speaker 2: we grew up with that kind of stuff. I mean
- 43:38Speaker 2: even art like Damien Hurst and Tracey Emmen and do
- 43:42Speaker 2: you know what I mean, that's all really important stuff.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Even if you don't go it, even if you don't
- 43:46Speaker 2: get it, it's all right for it to be out
- 43:49Speaker 2: there because you need it to be out there, and
- 43:51Speaker 2: kids need to see ay, because we're living in a
- 43:57Speaker 2: world where it's four cord songs and it's very beige
- 44:03Speaker 2: and it's really nice middle class boys and girls that
- 44:05Speaker 2: are doing it and there's no grit. There's no grit there.
- 44:08Speaker 2: The Julie Walters, the Arctic Monkeys, they all come from
- 44:12Speaker 2: a place of real kind of working class grit and
- 44:16Speaker 2: they get there through scholarships if it's acting or whatever.
- 44:19Speaker 2: And we really, we really need that because that's what
- 44:23Speaker 2: you know. De Niro would never been de Niro if
- 44:26Speaker 2: he'd been a nice lad for Cambridge, you know, or
- 44:28Speaker 2: if he grew up on a farm in Ipswich. You
- 44:30Speaker 2: know what I mean. It's that kind of thing that
- 44:33Speaker 2: you see. We actually need to find a path for
- 44:36Speaker 2: these kids to get through because it used to be
- 44:40Speaker 2: football or music and that's kind of been taken away
- 44:43Speaker 2: because to be a good footballer, you down you go
- 44:45Speaker 2: to one of these kind of academy farms.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Even the music is totally different everywhere practice.
- 44:52Speaker 2: I mean I had a joke like, and what's on
- 44:55Speaker 2: the show that I'm touring. They can serve We're going
- 45:00Speaker 2: to bring back conscription and national service. Now, now you're not.
- 45:04Speaker 2: That's a generation that I've never had to walk to school.
- 45:07Speaker 2: You're not sending them to war. This is they've never
- 45:11Speaker 2: felt the way of a sot wet the whole coat,
- 45:13Speaker 2: never find a back back, do you know what I mean? So,
- 45:17Speaker 2: and but there is that, and we do need those kids.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Like the Arctic Monkeys, you can draw it an absolute
- 45:24Speaker 2: thrilling two oasis into the stone rosies. It just goes.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean? I don't. I don't
- 45:30Speaker 2: think they're bad. I really enjoy their music. But they're no,
- 45:33Speaker 2: They're no my generation, do you know what I mean?
- 45:35Speaker 2: I was the generation before.
- 45:37Speaker 1: For so, as you've been a great guest, we are
- 45:40Speaker 1: going to wrap it up with we get a recommendation
- 45:44Speaker 1: from a previous guest, which in this case was Scott Keyle,
- 45:48Speaker 1: and we do a film an album in a song right,
- 45:51Speaker 1: so is recommended the film The Rock.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Oh great fellow, good film. But I've not seen it
- 45:59Speaker 2: and you need to work again. I've not seen it
- 46:01Speaker 2: in years.
- 46:01Speaker 1: So album David Gray, White Ladder.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Brilliant album. Went to see the anniversary tour of that album.
- 46:09Speaker 2: It was quite funny. Look, we're very young David Gray
- 46:11Speaker 2: against modern David Green. But what a brilliant album.
- 46:17Speaker 1: The song is from the Manic State Preachers and it's
- 46:20Speaker 1: if you tolerate this nib and I just get it wrong.
- 46:24Speaker 2: They I've anything new there, but that's it's always nice
- 46:29Speaker 2: to leave us it. That's a great tin in motorcycle emptiness.
- 46:35Speaker 1: So can they get a film, an album and a
- 46:36Speaker 1: song of yourself for a mixed guest?
- 46:38Speaker 2: So my film, I was really torn here right between
- 46:43Speaker 2: Godfather Too and Goodfellas. But I love Goodfellas. I think
- 46:49Speaker 2: Godfather Too is a very special film, especially within the trilogy,
- 46:53Speaker 2: especially after one. But Goodfellas is a stand alone example
- 46:57Speaker 2: of wonderful cinematography and that acted. And I only found
- 47:01Speaker 2: out reasonably recently that the bit with Joe Pesky going
- 47:05Speaker 2: funny funny how was off script? Scarcese just filled it
- 47:10Speaker 2: and let him go in that. That's great acting, great
- 47:13Speaker 2: directing drills. I mean, but he is everyone's favorite social path,
- 47:19Speaker 2: isn't he because he's sitting like see when you see
- 47:22Speaker 2: him going into the underground car park and you go
- 47:25Speaker 2: on and I've sat with people who have never seen
- 47:28Speaker 2: it and they got heat is mental and then they go, oh, no,
- 47:32Speaker 2: he goes everyone's favorite social path. So that's that's that
- 47:37Speaker 2: My natural album. My album is a London Nill Hell
- 47:42Speaker 2: four or Hell for London Noill. But the House mouns right,
- 47:46Speaker 2: this is a great album. This was nineteen eighty six.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Paul Heaton. I think Paul Heaton's probably one of the
- 47:53Speaker 2: greatest songwriters that this country's ever produced. Who doesn't get
- 47:56Speaker 2: the recognition and to have done that The House Martins
- 48:01Speaker 2: and then you go into the Beautiful South, which I
- 48:04Speaker 2: mean for a man to write the lyrics for a
- 48:07Speaker 2: woman and the way that he does is incredible. But
- 48:12Speaker 2: I mean there's the kind of love songs in the Heartbreak.
- 48:15Speaker 2: We're not talking about Adele or Seline de On here,
- 48:17Speaker 2: We're talking about basically a Northern couple in various situations
- 48:23Speaker 2: carry on up the charts as a phenomenal album. And
- 48:25Speaker 2: I nearly put that in, but I've went for this
- 48:28Speaker 2: because it speaks to what Britain was then and it
- 48:33Speaker 2: actually now speaks to his now, that whole thing, that
- 48:36Speaker 2: kind of flag day and think for a minute, and
- 48:41Speaker 2: it's just an incredible album. Norman Cook, fat Boy Slimt
- 48:45Speaker 2: is of course in that band, and just the story
- 48:49Speaker 2: of Paul Heaton's life in Journey is such a lefty.
- 48:53Speaker 2: He's a socialist. He is a principal man who writes
- 48:58Speaker 2: amazing songs and has never been given the credit. Because
- 49:02Speaker 2: a cool guy as well.
- 49:03Speaker 1: He'll put money behind the bars a different things for
- 49:06Speaker 1: these fans coming.
- 49:08Speaker 2: If it was for his birthday. I think it was
- 49:10Speaker 2: his fifth day, thirty sixtieth birthday, and he put one
- 49:12Speaker 2: in behind bars all over the UK and his favorite
- 49:16Speaker 2: pubs and his favorite cities, and he put it behind him.
- 49:19Speaker 2: People keep going and get a drink on him. He's
- 49:21Speaker 2: just he's an incredible man. I went to see him
- 49:24Speaker 2: at the Hydro and he's just an incredible artist and
- 49:28Speaker 2: just he just gets music and he manages to look
- 49:32Speaker 2: at the world and turn it into something that's not
- 49:37Speaker 2: fucking head cheering, do you know what I mean. I'm
- 49:42Speaker 2: doing a collab with helping Great. That's what I need.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Two multi millionaires tell me about the state of the world,
- 49:48Speaker 2: you know what happen. And my song, my song is
- 49:56Speaker 2: actually from that album and it's called get Up off
- 50:00Speaker 2: of Our Knees and there are It's an amazing it's
- 50:04Speaker 2: a very simple song, but there's an amazing song. There's
- 50:07Speaker 2: certain certain lyrics and it's like, hey, some spend winter
- 50:10Speaker 2: in a palace, some spend it in blankets. You know,
- 50:13Speaker 2: Banquets will be banquets, famines will be farmines, and so
- 50:16Speaker 2: on and so forth. Some people lose a son at war,
- 50:20Speaker 2: some people give it orders, you know, and it's really
- 50:23Speaker 2: kind of class division, but without it's kind of saying, look,
- 50:27Speaker 2: this is this system doesn't work, and this system has
- 50:32Speaker 2: stopped working and we're being exploited. That was released in
- 50:36Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six. It's twenty twenty six and it's brilliant.
- 50:43Speaker 2: So everybody should actually listen to that album. Let's get
- 50:46Speaker 2: a revolution. So it you've been great, very much.
